An Open Letter to David
Dear David,
I realize that you were never–or at least almost never–in it for the win. But it may still take some time for you to realize how fortunate you are to have avoided the heavy mantle of “American Idol.” You’ll understand someday that your potential for legitimacy on your own terms is vastly improved without it.
Because your opportunity to work and create in the music industry is for all intents and purposes identical to what it would have been had you in fact won the dubious distinction of a title, it is just as important for you to assess this inevitability with care and measure. I offer the following to you for whatever worth, if any, it may have.
1. Don’t Rush
In regards to the first music you select as your calling card to world, your producers and sponsors will tell you that the most important thing to them is quality, as well as your own satisfaction. Don’t believe them. What they really want is speed. They will want to capitalize on your current success and visibility. Many of them will cynically believe that your teen girl fan base will buy anything you release at this point, and they fear losing the momentum and attention you’ve gained. Don’t be pressured. Stand your ground. Learn to say “no” until you feel something is absolutely right. Your youth gives you an enormous advantage in this respect: You’ve got all the time in the world. Everyone else needs to rush. You don’t.
2. Beware The Sycophant
This is going to be difficult for you, David, because your compassionate nature inclines you toward giving people the benefit of the doubt. You see the good in others and want to trust them. You’ll need to temper this inclination. The entertainment industry is full of great actors, most of whom are not on a stage or in front of a camera. And it’s not even so much that they don’t mean what they say when they say it, as much as that they are capable of saying just the opposite ten minutes later and meaning that, too. Integrity is in short supply in this industry. It doesn’t mean that they are bad people. They just do questionable and selfish things. There’s a Buddhist saying: “Love the bee but beware the sting.”
3. Avoid Categorization
In the course of your discussions with producers, agents, and publicists, you will hear time and time again (so often, in fact, that it will sound like a skipping CD) who or what you should be “like.” Understand that the one thing the entertainment industry is designed to avoid at all possible costs is originality. They can’t explain it, they can’t package it, they can’t promote it. You need to trust your audience more than you trust the industry. Your audience will get it. They will understand you. Don’t let anyone put you in any labeled buckets other than one labeled “David Archuleta.”
4. Play
Successful creative people know that art comes from a sense of play. Your most treasured skills and techniques were probably developed not in practice sessions with Dean or in contests or performances, but in your own room, listening to recordings and experimenting with your voice, or noodling around on the piano. It is sometimes very hard to remember to bring that sense of play into a studio when a lot of highly-paid people are standing around. Don’t let it throw you. If you’re not having fun, call a break. Go play a video game. They will wait for you. Artists are not considered Divas because they require certain ways of working but because of how they treat people. That will never be an issue for you, so don’t shy away from having everyone work the way you want to work. They will respect and appreciate you for it, because they’ll know that it means getting a better result.
5. Live and Write
One of your biggest challenges may be in finding the courage to live who you are more than what you feel is expected of you. And that has everything to do with who you are as an artist as much as it does who you are as a person. If the proposed idea is to trust the God in your heart more than the one on the page or in the pulpit, it is not intended to contradict spiritual teaching but to emphasize the power of a personal connection to the source of all things. Spiritual work involves cultivating an awareness of that connection. If you are here, you were meant to be here just as you are. Don’t let anyone tell you that you need to change. Your contributions to music might well involve writing. Maybe not now, or even in the near future, but someday, and possibly in a big way. Great writing flows from a deep immersion in life and in being human, with all its messy contradictions, its bliss and its terrors, from the sublime to the ridiculous.
Godspeed, David. You’ll never know the depths to which you have touched and connected so many lives.

Thank you so much, rascal, for posting this. Especially for those of us who were not just disappointed tonight but who felt that they were reliving high school all over again … where the popular guy wins despite not having the most talent. Simon Cowell obviously knew that Cook had won and made that silly apology. It was reported at 10 am this morning that Cook had won. Cowell knew so he backtracked.
But he was right last night. Archie scored a knockout. I know he must be disappointed. But he will be a huge success if he follows rascal’s advice which is the best thing he could do.
Thank you to rascal for expressing our feelings in words we could never come up with and thank you to David for giving us so much and for what he has yet to give all of us.
We love you both!
A truly wise and touching letter. All the right advice. I am so emotional, not like me at all.
This young man’s voice and humble attitude has captivated my heart and soul for the last 5 months and I have an amazingly busy life. I am choosing to let go a little bit now and allow time for this growth and experience you so eloquently write about. I hope he takes his own sweet time. There are many, many, many, many, many who will wait.
You are right, he will never know the depths to which his signing has touched so many people. Mine included.
Rascal — I don’t know who you are or what you do in life, but I am consoled again by your words and greatful for them.
Clearly I’m too emotional to spell anything correctly in my comment #2. UGGH! That’s all.
Hi Rascal,
what I find truly cool is this: I’m quite sure that David will eventually read your letter. It’s also possible that he’ll read about just how he has affected so many adults. I can’t help but think that this will only boost his confidence in realizing just how many people he has made “feel what he feels”
Thanks for getting this out -- as usual, you pare it all back to what needs to be said.
PS David was a shining light tonight, In a generally mediocre variety show, our boy was truly radiant. What little he sang stood out like little nuggets of gold in the grey sand. I’m confident that you’re correct. This “loss” is really a blessing.
Rascal, without your article ,’Rebel Without A Crown’, chances are I would have been crushed tonight. It was a real disappointment, because I know how much David must have wanted to win. His impassioned, emotional and unbelievable performance last night is a testament to that. I realize that it really doesn’t matter. He has an incredible journey ahead. American Idol has been such an amazing experience for him! He has nothing to regret, and obviously has appreciated how lucky he has been to have such an opportunity. What a blast for anyone, much less a 17 yr. old!!
Considering the real uncertainty of the vote count, fixing by producers, sandbagging, etc., I don’t think we can be absolutely certain who ‘really’ won anyway. If the Supreme Court can appoint our President, well….AI is just a TV show!
I just hope David is ok. I know we will all go on, and so will he. I am sure going to miss him showing up in my living room on Tue. and Wed. nights though. Please keep the website up! Your site and Fan Blast are the only sites I visit anymore to read about David. All the horrible press comments are just too painful to plow through. I stopped putting myself through all of that a couple of weeks ago. I know that I am not the only one who wants to keep up with David and his life and career.
I really have fallen in love with that beautiful boy.
What a gem.
Elise
Thank you Rascal for bringing out the words that are difficult for me to express at this moment. I agree with muscao as well that “this loss is really a blessing”. We are now ready to venture with David as he walk his new journey. Two words for David, “THANK YOU” you continue to amaze and inspire me. I thank JESUS for sharing you into my life. You gave me the connection of an everlasting JOY. These are enough reasons for me to Celebrate! And, Cheers to YOU and the ANGELS, who did an amazing job. Agree with Rascal “don’t rush”, One day at a time. God Bless us all.
Oh Rascal! Thank you so much for this great advice to David. I was at peace with tonight’s outcome and David seemed okay too, so I didn’t cry but…. After reading your letter the tears started coming and coming. I’ve never cared so much about a complete stranger, never prayed so hard for someone I don’t know as I do and have for this young man.
Last night was absolutely magical-- nothing can take it away and I’ll never forget seeing someone BECOME what they were meant to be. I’m shaking just thinking about it. David, we will wait. Do it right. After watching you these past few months, I know that your singing will change people and they, in turn, will change the world. I think you may just have your generation’s “Imagine” in you. Don’t let anyone talk you into doing anything you don’t want to do-- in music, or more importantly, in life. God has the plan. You have the voice. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing it with us.
Oh Rascal, thank you once again. So much truth in all that you’ve said in the Open Letter. American Idol is so over for me that I fast forward practically everything that is not related to David James.
Sometimes I feel very protective over David James but at times, as with being a mother, I need to let him go and experience life for himself but remaining alongside to guide and chide when needed. I have much faith in your wisdom. After all it is you who said you will never be lonely if you befriend yourself. Please remain to the character traits that made you so endearing. David James, it is your time to soar!
Rascal, I do hope you continue with this blog….I have learnt much from your writings too.
I have to prepare my dictionary here in order to understand what you wrote Rascal lol
Reading all the comments from others, everything they said is what exactly what I want to say and try to say. Now we seem to share the same thought, thank you Archey, you and Angels out there!
Wow, Rascal, you have given him all the advise I would have. It’s sad he has to harden himself to the horrors of the business he is about to delve into. I believe his father has been the firewall for that during his journey through AI. My hope is he will not let Hollywood/The Media get to him.
As for AI, I am not surprised by the outcome. I figured that there maybe one last twist in this before the day was over and I was prepared for the eventuality that DC would win. I was very happy to see the two at the end of the show together.
I watched the local news report where they interviewed DA after it was all over and he seemed in great spirits, even a little relieved by it all. I don’t blame him. It has been practically 6 months of non-stop work.
However, what I wasn’t prepared for is the void this all leaves. Again, I have never watched AI before and everything I feel tells me I won’t but for an episode to see who next seasons contestants are. To be honest, I am not really even the TV watching type.
Me, however, being the slightly creative type, I whipped together something on my computer as an outlet to this… loss? Strange. I hope you will indulge me and I hope you enjoy this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDomPVYgb4I
I have another one in mind, as two songs came to mind today for some movie/slideshow. I don’t have the video/movie software that some have, but I tried my best. Again I hope you enjoy.
God Bless David and his Family.
I do hope he gets to read all this. Such thoughtful guidance would be the strongest nourishment he needs to meet the real world.
Ah Rascal,
I was keeping it together — at peace with the thought that a person of David’s quality is probably better off not winning a show which has lost its innocence. (I still feel that way.) You brought me to tears with your #5. I hope you will maintain this blog, and I will continue to read you. I believe that many of us fell in love with David this season — and to a degree with each other. I can’t imagine that this is something common to the Idol experience.
To other who are heartbroken, remember that David’s favorite past Idols weren’t the ‘winners’ of their seasons. He mentioned Tamyra Gray and Elliott Yamin as favorites, remember? He knew going in that the superior musicians weren’t necessarily the ones who found show success. And we wouldn’t have seen David on our TV screens regardless of the outcome. The show is over. We will move on, as will David. And we’ll support him in his choices.
Thank you, Rascal. I am also a devoted fan of YOURS, and I hope he somehow does see your letter.
(He’ll get to have a website! Maybe he’ll link to Rascal’s blog!!)
Reading all this comments showed how much LOVE David gets from his Angels. My thought, I am sure David will be overwhelmed reading all these comments. It includes the affection and consolation of one another’s heart. How Amazing what David did to all of us. He connected himself first to us, then he linked all our hearts and souls. Isn’t that the true WINNER! Two words AMAZING DAVID! Keep that loving spirit everyone and let the world know David was the cause. Cheers!
“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love HIM.” Romans 8:28
SMILE
I never followed pop music before this or AI and I won’t again. It seems to be all about popularity and not quality. Like so much of life. But that’s why I avoid the mass media and TV. It’s all so banal.
But David was a shining light amid all that banality and so, of course, he had to be destroyed by the cynical and the negative which is even continuing this morning. But you know what? They didn’t destroy him at all. They freed him now to be himself and whatever he wants to be without the albatross of the AI title.
Which, for me, I have accepted as the best outcome for all of us. But I think David really wanted this and, for him, I cry. I feel so bad for him because they let him believe the night before that he was it and then they snatched it away. That’s the cruelest thing of all. But it’s also what life is like and he has now learned that early.
I have no doubt that he will soar. As he sang “no one can take it from me … in this moment.” The right choice and the right message.
I’m sure he knows how many of us he has touched and will always touched. I do think it’s a good thing as one poster said to “let this go a bit now.” I’ve listened to my CD compilations of his performances once this morning but I’m going to put it away for while, get back to life, gain some perspective , and then come back to it.
And I look forward to whatever it is he does next … because I will be there to support him as an artist in whatever he chooses!
Imagine, David. It’s all out there waiting for you.
Thank you Rascal for all the time you have spent writing about David. The judges finally got the outcome they wanted. Between the rumors the press started about David from the beginning to Simon’s negative comments, Paula predicting the winner, and so on I do not know how our “lil” David make it this far. The press could not believe in the beginning what they were seeing a true genuine talented young man. The media wants drama and have ripped this boy and his family to shreds for weeks. Bad press can ruin a potential artist and if David just wasn’t so talented he would have been gone a long time ago. I knew something was up with Simon after the good comments were made because he had been pushing DC to win. He knew by bragging on David Archuleta he would make David Cook fans mad and they would vote like there was no tomorrow for him. That is just what happened. I had said all along to my family that David was holding back for some reason. I saw the potential in him and thought he could do better. Tuesdays nights performance proved that. He layed out his heart and soul on that stage and was so amazing. His vocals were great and he showed why he should win. David is an amazing young man and I stopped watching this silly show after another deserving past contestant did not take the crown. I just could not help it when I first saw David sing. I knew there was something special about him and even if American Idol does not see it. I am like you I do believe Archie is the real rebel. I believe that AI saw from the start how David held true to his beliefs and would not be an idol puppet. They now have what they wanted in a winnner. Someone who will fit right into to idol position of doing whatever they want and all that goes with that genre of music. With Cook they know what they are getting…another rocker. I just can not put into words by how saddened I am over this whole thing. AI can bend and twist a contestant how they want and put restrictions on him/her that do not apply to others as in David’s case. They praised Cook along for changing songs to show originality but yet would not give David the freedom to do the same. The producers can help or hurt a contestant by giving unpopular songs to one and popular songs to another. Even if you are the better singer and have the bad song people will not like it because they just do not like the song. I am sure you already know about the unfair things they have done to David. He said he was having a hard time getting finale songs approved so the producers told him to do a song he had already done. Cook got to sing whatever he wanted. I think David made a wise choice by singing “Imagine” it reminded me of why so many people including me first fell in love him. American Idol wanted a shocker this year and it was no shocker to me last night who won. The judges have been so biased toward Cook for a long time. They think people do not realize whats going on. Simon winking at Cook and throwing off on him ?? I was glad he finally gave credit where credit was due but I questioned his motives. He knew to get the votes for DC if the bashed him people would not assume he was safe and vote. Same goes for Archuleta if he praised him people would think he was safe and not vote. Simon is a smart man he knows how to get the votes in the end.
I am just so glad this is over with and David can be David again. He is an amazing singer with a personality that cannot be matched. He is what a true American Idol should be all wrapped up into one beautiful soul of a 17 yr old boy. I know and expect him to do great things.
rascal-thanks for helping to ease the grieving process, not only for those that feel he is the only American Idol not to win the crown, but also for the abrupt halt of Tuesday and Wednesday night David Archuleta fix.
I’m actually very happy he’s not going to be in the clutches of American Idol. He is so much bigger than AI. Please don’t worry angels-I know we’ll have him with us for a very long time to come.
Be at peace with this -- David surely is.
Rascal -- You wrote when you first started this site in one of your commentaries that you surmised, although shy, David was resolute and determined. I agree completely. He is passing through a door and AI was the experience he needed at his young age to get to the door he has now opened. His performances at the Finale were breath taking and soul piercing.
I have been continually iimpressed with and in awe of his focus despite his treatment in the media. He appears to ignore his detractors, however, vitrolic, rancourous and intentionally destructive -- adversity builds strength and, although young, he walked that path of burrning coals with courage, valor and grace.
When I think of the laughter and cheerfulness that he has demonstrated as core to his character, I simply know that he will continue to grow through joy recognizing the worth of lessons from adversity for what they are.
He obvioulsly has a high degree internal fortitude and good external support systems in place. As we saw during the course of AI, being 17, he was developing emotionally, mentailly, socially, physically and, of course, his performance abilities in quantum leaps. What a privilege to be an observer of that journey. His vulnerability and honesty throughout was stunning and awe inspiring--something I have never witnessed before.
Not spending any time in the entertainment media until now, I never realized the imaginary world, the lack of integrity and the ultimate allegience to sensationalism that entertainment media, in general, creates for self-gain. That is the world our David has to navigate at some level as he develops his artistry and delivers to us, his fans. Although daunting to me, I have confidence that he will succeed!
We are a society that perceives not winning as failure. So we grieve because of our ingrained societal values. You have been a beacon of light to help us see our way through to the other side of AI. David is fortunate to have you as a visible, knowledgeable, and insightful champion. I believe he has many champions who will be available to him as he grows his artistry and determines his path.
I look forward to returning to your site periodically as you track and define David’s career. I have complete certainty that David will achieve his potential and I look forward to witnessing his journey with mega anticipation and soulful gleel
Thank you.
Thanks rascal, I was an emotional mess yesterday but today I’m calm and I’ve had time to think. I agree with what you’ve said earlier. This is a blessing in disguise. If he had won the title, American Idol would take credit for any success he would have in his bright, bright future, the way they do for Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood’s career, and, frankly, American Idol doesn’t deserve that type of recognition. Seeing the AI people push David left and right like a puppet during homecoming weekend, exercising their full ownership of David, I should be more happy that David doesn’t have the AI title polluting his music, but I’m not because, I guess, to me, a part of it is about winning. That was all I could think of yesterday, but today I have grown up a little bit more. At the end of the day, this isn’t about winning at all nor is it about me. It’s about David and music, one an animate angel and the other an artistic expression of the soul. Over the past few months, I’ve fallen in love with both entities, but what has left me speechless is the relationship between the two that I have witnessed. Both embrace each other nakedly and what happens is magic. I love when you, rascal, make those Buddha references because the way of Buddha may be the only way I can describe the relationship between David and music. It’s so simple yet so profound and when you start believing in its actual existence, there is an inexplicable hope that lifts you, higher than any American Idol title can reach.
Thank you rascal. After crying my eyes out yesterday I realized what is meant to be is meant to be. Today after seeing David so happy and relaxed in his interviews I know this is best for him. I will always follow David Archuleta and support him in everything. I hope to also follow your writings rascal so please don’t leave us.
Love ya!!
Dear RascaL: I am the mom in Panama who couldn’t watch the show live, who managed to watch it live at a friend’s house thanks to some internet site. who even voted and was as happy as ever, who heard his three songs over and over all throughout the night and the day, during every spare minute I had, while studying with my kids, checking my email, waiting for something.
I was very anxious yesterday, and managed to watch the show live again. I have to admit how nervous I was as I was reading that the polls revealed Cook as the winner, how disappointed I felt when his name was read and not our David’s. I checked your website again and again, looking for some words of comfort, and it is the first thing I did this morning as soon as I had some time.
You made me cry with your letter. I did not cry last night, but I cannot help it now as I write.
Thank you for your words, your site has been a safe harbor amidst all the criticism. Thank you. Thank you. Like someone else writing before me, I do not know who you are, but I thank you for your words. Please keep the sit up.
To David: you have said time again and again how you love the way music makes people feel, and how you wanted to touch people’s hearts through your music. You may never know how much you have done that in the past 5 months. You may never know how many of us thrive on your pure voice. You are a winner. Titles do not define us. We don’t take them along with us. When we leave this mortal existence, what stays with us is the kind of life we lived and how it changed this world for the better.
You are 17, and you have already touched so many people. Be true to yourself, choose what’s right, continue on your path of humility, gratitude, honesty and integrity that has characterized you all this time.
We admire your talent, your voice, your music, but most of all, we admire YOU.
Thank you, thank you, thank you
In David’s first post result show interview he spoke about how he knew Cook was going to take the title. He had known for weeks. Consider those remarks in regards to Tuesday night’s performances.
He could have resigned himself to the inevitable, he could have phoned it in. But not David.
.
In less than 6 minutes he impacted 7,000 people at the Nokia, hundreds in the media and millions across the country. No one who witnessed that evening was untouched. He once again gave us the Voice, the Heart, the Soul, the man who is David Archuleta. What a way to leave your mark. It was an evening to go down in Idol history.
I can’t thank you enough David. In the last few weeks you have given me more joy and hope than I ever thought possible. You have changed my life.
Thank you too, Rascal for giving words to my innermost thoughts and for this place.
FFL,
J.
Rascal, thank you so much for this site. I hope you keep it running, it’s been a port of sanity in a sea of media nuttiness. And thank you to David Archuleta — just typing those words brings tears to my eyes because his music has (and will continue to) mean so much to me and so many others — pure soul food, man! And David, your personal integrity, ability to stay true to who you are and pure, brave heart are an inspiration to us all. Bravo from Canada!
THANK YOU RASCAL for this forum and your time and devotion. I have appreciated reading adult (I a mean that in the correct way) commentary. This young man has touched so many, it feels good to know that am among friends!
Being a newcomer to this ‘e’-world I have taken your advice Rascal and stayed away from the sites critical of this remarkable new talent. I had to force myself to watch that mostly stupid 2 hour show last night, just for the chance that to see ‘our’ David a few more times on screen. He’s a treasure isn’t he? Not really part of that garish world at all, thank goodness. I’m sure that his faith has a lot to do with it. I hope he is able to read your great letter, seems like wonderful advice.
I too am hoping that you keep this site up, though I will visit less often in the future, maybe… we’ll see how long I can go without a David fix! (my family thinks I’m weird)
After such impassioned and inspiring performances in the finale, I really wanted David to win. Not because he needs it, but because I could feel how much he wanted it and how hard he was fighting. I am still disappointed about his loss and even more so that the show is over now which means no more weekly doses of David. However, I am glad he’s now free of Idol (and me too!) and can pursue the career he wants. My only hope is that he stays true to himself and becomes the brilliant artist we can already see glimmering in him.
I hope you keep writing! and next time we’ll all be discussing his glorious new album. Question is….can I last that long???
Wow, what a night. As, I’ve said before. It wasn’t important that David won the title of American Idol. This was a stage for him to show the world his beautiful gift. God has used him in a way to show us that isn’t not about winning, it’s about getting your message to people and touch their hearts. David has done that. This is just the beginning for him. He was soaring and his angel wings were wide open. I feel blessed to have seen grow and touch so many lives. He is the world idol in our hearts!
David, you will know that God has planned this all out for you. And as you take those first steps into the big stardom that you have already developed, just know he is right there by your side cheering you on! We love you David!

Sorry for the misspellings, just writing from the heart.

just wanted to share this interview with the davids after the tues night.
i feel like you get to see david’s personality so much better. he seems like a confident, funny guy…not at all like how he’s on stage…
anyways hope u guys enjoy
he also just seems more intelligent and strong while still being his humble self. sorry i think i’m gushing…haha oh david…what are you doing to me…
i’m so much more confident that he will have a great post-idol career. as much more than a teeny bopper disney channel star (i’ve been reading this in the press a lot and it’s so annoying)
As I said a couple of days ago the really important night was Tuesday night when David sang those three performances. A mark of a great artist is the ability to take something trite or banal or even unworthy and turn it into gold. David did that with the “in the Moment” song. In anyone else’s hands it would have been revealed for what it is but David made it magical with his voice and presence.
I think of wonderful actors like Judi Dench, James Mason, Barbara Stanwyck, and others. All appeared in many awful movies but their performances always shown through because they were incapable of giving a bad performance. They enhance the material they are givein.
Anyone can take a great song and sing it well. The trick is to take a mediocre song and make gold and magic out of it. David has done that time and time again.
Will you ever heard “Imagine” and again and think of John Lennon? Nope. Will you ever heard “Smokey Mountain Memories” again and think of Dolly Parton? Nope.
That’s the mark of an artist. He makes something his own. David has made songs I would never otherwise have listened to and infused them with love, heart, soul, and gravity and made me want to hear them again and again.
That’s art. That’s David. I don’t care if I’m the only 45 year old man at his first concert. I will go. And I will sway along with everyone else. I will buy his records.
Because I believe. I believe in David. I believe in his promise. I believe in his goodness. I simply believe.
God smiled upon David when he was born and this world is a better place for his being in it.
Thank you, David. You’ve erased the cynicism from this old fart’s cynical heart. That is more than I could have ever asked of such a young man.
I just want to share this interview I just found.
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1587895/20080522/id_0.jhtml
I will forever be his fan.
Rascal, I hope you will keep this site up. I know as AI has ended, people’s interests turn to other things, but please always remember what made you create this site. You insight and eloquent wording have brought David’s fans together and has been a safe harbor in a storm of media madness. If you need an extra hand, I am there.
I wanted to share these two videos off of Rickey’s site. I feel better after seeing them and I hope they help those of us who feel a little down by the outcome, even though we know its for the best:
Good Day New York -- David Archuleta:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5iicl_archgoodday_shortfilms
And -- believe it or not -- David C’s continuous praise for Archie has helped as well:
Good Day New York -- David Cook:

Out of all the blogspots that are available to share a commentary, Rascal’s notingDavid was the only one I received approval for; for this I am eternally grateful. (And for a Buddhist that is a really long time.)
Some final thoughts that haunt me and if you will permit me to lter them out by sharing, I will finally be able to let them go. As I have previously stated, we all know who really won the singing contest this season. What bothers me is that for weeks now, both Davids have been separated by only a million votes, each taking first place depending on the week. After the results were revealed, 12 million votes separated the two. What happened? My thought is that when the judges disrespected David Cook (or seemed to), Cookeys fans sought to retaliate. They knew that they could outlast Archeys fanbase as they could stay up later to vote. A popularity contest usually always depends on the fanbases. It may have not been forseen, but the judges I think turned the tide in Cooks favor.
What astonishes and pleases me so profoundly is how gracious David Archuleta has been in the interviews after this weeks events. He truly thinks of his relationship with Cook as his “big brother” and the same in return from Cook to Archey. They both seem to be releived that the competition is over and now the fun can begin. Be honest, can any of you think of one of the Davids without thinking of the other? Season 7 of American Idol will always be different in that respect. How many previous season finalist can you say that about? I for one rejoice in the fact that the only season I have given this much time to will have these two permanently connected.
Now I get the pleasure of seeing David come back to Utah and begin the rest of his life. I have really enjoyed the comments here on notingDavid as they seemed to me to have a more mature appreciation for David’s talents. Little did we know that from here in Salt Lake City that one of the 103,000 contestants to try out for Idol this season would give the world so much. And having David be able to carry the pressure that he did not ask for and do it so admirably is a testament to him. He is surrounded by good people, regardless of what you read in the press, but it was David in the spotlight singing and no one else. It was his soul that we witnessed. I will enjoy many hours to come reliving his performances through the gift of his videos. I look forward to the day I can buy his first CD (I am of the generation that does not download easily), go to his first sold out solo concert, and buy a 2X sized concert t-shirt with his face on it.
Finally, for one who believes in reincarnation as a Buddhist, I truly believe I have witnessed the coming of age of a truly spiritually advanced being (Bodhisattva). From some previous lifetime, David did something so good as to have his karma provide him this great opportunity in this life. The Dalai Lama has stated that if you want to know how you got to where you are in this life, look to your past as the road map to the here and now. David’s past life must have been really special.
I also have to agree totally with another notingDavid commentor, ariadne 1880. He (I think) offered this and said it better that I ever could:
“God smiled upon David when he was born and the world is a better place for his being in it.
Thank you, David. You’ve erased the cynicism from this old fart’s cynical heart. That is more that I (or anyone) could have ever asked from such a young man.”
I met him this morning at the Nokia theatre and i have got to tell you he is not any different on tv than he is in person, he is THE MOST appreciative and AMAZING person a very genuine and down to earth kid he let me get pictures and signed 2 things for me. HE actaully had tears in his eyes when i told him how much i paid for those tickets to see him and there was this blind kid there because he is ARCHIES fan and david had tears in his eyes when he asked to hug him it was amazing and David is probably the most WONDERFUL person i have ever met in my entire life and i mean that from the bottom of my heart, He is really truly an ANGEL sent from heaven for us to witness. I cannot believe anybody can be that nice and genuine and apologetic about nothing. He made sure that he stopped an interview to come over and talk to me and sign and get pictures.. Bottom line is he is just WONDERFUL and his parents are just amazing also
My Top 10 Archie Moments of Idol Season 7:
10. His killer smile at the end of “Long and Winding Road.”
9. Saying “Dang It!” about screwing up the words on “We Can Work it Out.”
8. In “Stand by Me,” after he sings the words “Whenever you need a friend,” he turns to his right with a fantastic sh-t-eating grin on his face. (Of course, his line in the intro this song about singing to his dog is priceless too.)
7. His confident walk toward the audience as the crescendo rises during “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” bringing the audience to its feet.
6. Describing how Amanda “could kill you if she wanted too. But she’s a really nice girl.”
5. His elbow jabs at Ryan while joking around after “Shop Around.”
4. “Where did they all park?”
3. The look on his face when Paula tells him to scoot to the middle of the floor when Ryan tells him to choose sides on top 7 elimination night.
2. The slight growl while singing the words “You know, you know” during the live performance of “When you Believe.” It’s by far his most underrated performance.
1. Him singing the words “A brotherrrrr hoooooood of Maaaaa…nnnnn” in the original performance of “Imagine.”
Thank you, David James Archuleta, for allowing me to enjoy your bright shining light. I’ll be with you always.
caseydog -- wow, you really nailed it. I would add only one: The first heart sign to his fans after “Angels.”
David Archuleta won. He did exactly what he went to San Diego last summer to do. He did his best. He worked his guts out and he courageously put his heart and soul on the line week after grueling week. He handled the crticism with grace just as he handled the praise with grace. And in the process he won our hearts. He won our respect and our admiration and our undying loyalty both, for his music and for his humanity. Winning a spot in the finals was almost irrelavent, but he won that too.
Did you have this sent to David? Or do you plan on somehow sending it to David? It might be something he needs to read. Maybe try sending it to Fanblast (davidarchuletafanblast.com) so they can get it to David. I think this is something he most definitely should hear.

I have a clip of the interview they did with David locally about an hour and half after the conclusion of the show and thought you might find your words answered, if not all of ours:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XaOdz86buQ
Though looking a little worn, you can see the relief and his amazing nature shine through. His genuineness is so refreshing.
caseydog -
One of David’s moments that stands out in my mind is his breakdown when Alexandrea Lushington left the show. It was really the first moment that I began realizing David’s character.
casydog, I am also adding another moment…………
When he sang the national anthem at the Utah Jazz Game:
1) he sang it so so so well, after a long & tiring but awesome day;
2) his countenance when he looked up and scanned the crowd, my pride swelling for him;
3) his dream of singing at the Olympics, this “gig” is a glimpse into the future
Rascal,
Sorry if this question is rather insignificant, but what were your Top 3 favorite performances of David in the show? We’ve been doing this sort of thing in the IDF, and I’m very much interested with your input here. Haha
I watched him last night on Fox’s American Idol Extra. He reaction to not wanting to see his own performances — a mark of a true artist. He was so genuine and so humble and that smile never leaves his face.
I think one of the things about him that so many of connect to or find attractive is that he’s exactly what we would like in a son, brother, godson, nephew, grandson. I’m sure he has his flaws but no one has seen them yet. He seems the embodiment of youthful perfection. True, unspoiled, a little naive, but somehow sure of what he wants, with talent on loan from God.
I’ve been listening to his recordings this morning again even though I said I wouldn’t but I wanted to put together a good compilation CD while it was all fresh in my mind.
Does anyone know if there will be any studio recordings from Tuesday’s songs? I haven’t seen anything.
I do find, once again, that the live stuff is so much better than the studio stuff. He really comes “alive” in those performances. Especially on that last night when he just made such magic.
Here’s looking forward to more magic in the future!
I look forward to experiencing that magic in person soon!
watchtower -- If pressed, I would probably have to say that the studio recording of “Think of Me” (miraculous), the first version of “Imagine” (I like the simpler approach), and the live performance of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” (jaw dropper) would be the three performances that the world would be a decidedly dimmer place without. I agree with caseydog that the live version of “Believe” is underrated, and I also happen to think the live version of “The Long and Winding Road” is also underrated, but I would probably have to go with either “Angels” (live version) or “Smoky Mountain Memories” (either version) as my alternates.
Rascal -- “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” was a Jaw Dropper indeed I was really caught by surpise. And talk about bringing out the heavy artillery in the finale.
Masterclasslady also had this to say about it:
“Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me was a brilliant performance, overflowing with style and substance. I have heard this song performed many times and performed well, I might add! However, your interpretation was, for me, the pinnacle of all past performances of this number. It left me in tears – first time all season!”
Talk about goosebumps!
And yes, i also preferred his first version of Imagine (but his second one remains stellar nonetheless). Its really hard to capture the same moment as he did the first time he performed the song. It will pretty much be one the “untouchable” songs in AI in the future (though I definitely will not watch the show as intently)
And with all the sappy and syrupy background of the studio recording, “Think of Me” was indeed a vocal masterpiece. Would love to hear the acoustic version of it.
Thank you so much for your thoughts. Hope you can keep this blog going.
I love this blog.
I have come to a realization of why this amazing voice has cut so deeply to my soul. Being a person of faith, in my heart I realize this amazing gift is truly only from the creator of all things. It has brought me to my knees, in gratitude, amazement, humility and adoration of the God I know. It is inspiring to see a young person use those given gifts to uplift and give back to others.
Smokey Mountain Memories -- so personal
All three of the songs on the finale were undeniable the most commanding of his performances for me and I hope a slight glimpse into the future career of this great artist.
I loved at the One Republic song he laid back and was “behind the scenes” on that song. I loved that he seemed to be sooo into the vocal jamming.
I have to mention something about his “Apologize” performance. It was as if I was watching a duet at the Grammy’s, and David seemed like he was already an established artist. He looked so comfortable and in control, but not within the context of the competition. It was really such a pleasure to watch.
Ah watchtower-great observation. I’m sure you’ll all agree that we will most likely see him at the Grammy’s someday very soon. It’s inevitable -- it’s his destiny.
Thank you Rascal for your coverage and insightful writings!. Thank you to all the other fans who love David as much as I do. I am as proud of him as if he were my own son!! I appreciate the links added to messages about David so I can see and hear how he is doing and where his life journey is taking him. Our precious David will continue to amaze us with his incredible talent and personality. In his interviews he will say that he is “so strange” or “so weird” and I hope he knows that “that is why we LOVE him so much”. He is so unique and he will continue to own a piece of my soul for all time. I will follow all he does and will rejoice with him along the way! I look foward to all of it! I know he will continue to shine!!
To kccy: I so agree with you about David’s performance of the national anthem at the Utah Jazz Game. I only got to see it on YouTube but was so moved I felt like pledging allegiance — and I’m Canadian!!
Just wanted to share my favourite interview so far (David with Justin Guarini):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxFc0RWKzN0
(Hope link works, might need to copy & paste.)
I agree, TOfan, David does really well in this one. Guarini has always been a big admirer of David’s (like most people who know music) and the vibe here is really swell. A keeper!
When I heard that David and the others were going to be on Larry King last night, I cringed a little. I find Larry’s style brash. Especially in the sense that he rarely gives people a chance to elaborate on their answers. At times he loses patience and it’s off to another unrelated question. I didn’t think David would have an easy time of it. But I was wrong. David handled it all with that serene grace. Inevitably Larry cut him off a couple of times, even rudely switching to ask a question of another guest in the middle of David’s answer. David just kept on smiling, enjoying the time there with his friends.
Someone should advise interviewers including Larry, to stop asking questions that would lead the contestants to make negative comments about the others. Really now, what are they expecting them to say? Would any of the contestants have the heart to criticize one of the less talented in the group? Or is the intention to trip them up into saying something they don’t want to? Probably. Pretty mean spirited, if true.
DomenicA//4Archuleta- thanks so much for your post. It confirms in a wonderful way what we all knew about David.
Last week I started referring to David as our “hero”. Then I dropped the parentheses as I realized, that I meant it without any qualification. RIKA you said in the “He Who Shall not be Denied” thread, that, first he connected to us and then linked us through our hearts and souls. I’ve felt from that first moment back in February, seeing “Imagine” that something else besides a great singer was happening here. There’s a spiritual aspect to David that has emanated out to all of us who have been touched. From all that I’ve read and felt, I definitely feel that we’re part of something much larger. People talk of trying to emulate his positive behaviour. I’ve felt this: I try to be more patient with my kids and with my clients at work. When my thought process is turning negative, I hear David’s comments in my head and I switch gears. This seventeen-year old with a heart- of-gold, is leading us towards becoming better people. And it’s like a wave, that’s catching on. I don’t speak of God easily, but this all somehow feels like God’s plan.
Let me go overboard for a minute: It feels that all that David represents, and all that we’ve been feeling, is out of synch and at odds with the cynical and de-moralized aspects of our society. Our “civilization” needs a good ass-kicking. We need to re-discover the decency and virtue that we’re all capable of. It’s only through love, common decency and mutual respect that we’ll ever be able to enjoy the world as it should be. If we could take the power out of the hands of the greedy and instead of helping the bottom lines of corporations, start to concentrate on helping each other, we’d be on our way to that wonderful world.
Just what level of greatness David is headed for, I don’t know. But if it’s to continue to inspire us with his singing and to spread goodwill with the sheer luminosity of his shining character, he’ll have accomplished his goal many times over. That goodwill can continue to spread having a profound effect on the world. (Wow!)
Sorry to rant but I just had to get it out.
Hey TOfan thanks for the link. This is so good. Justin gets David to really express himself because David can feel the admiration. So cool! Thanks again from a fellow Toronto fan.
Well said musicao. David showed the world his humility and purity of his heart during his Larry King Live interview. He was real and having fun and that is what we love about our David. What the world needs now is DAVID. Bottom line, he is the “MUST STAR” to look upon to.
Another great interview post results finale at http://video.accesshollywood.com/player/?i…#videoid=254493
Musicao,
Thanks for the comment about Justin’s inteview with David — that he relaxed because he felt the admiration. For a long time, I’ve felt as if David sort of ‘tensed up’ during judges because they were, well, judging him.
Toward the end of the competition, it seemed that he was even more tense and I wondered if it was because they were judging him UNFAIRLY — trying to push more votes toward Cook. This kid has been singing all of his life. He is hard on himself, but he’s probably heard a lot of praise from others. It must have been hard. On the final two night, he seemed defiant in his performance and defiant as he stood before the judges. Sort of a “take that, judges. Now tell me I wasn’t good.” Gah, I love this kid.
I can’t wait to see how he soars when he is able to just perform for his audience. I think it’s going to be great, folks. Really great.
Here’s another really sweet one. Boddhisattva Archuleta on “…if it’s your moment, it’s your moment…” and “…there’s always something to like about someone…”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSw8tUSoN5g&feature=related
highervibe- this interview was the one that really got in to me. I couldn’t believe how genuine and decent he showed himself to be. Thanks for bringing it back -haven’t checked it out in a while.
Rascal: Thank you for your excellent advice to David and sharing so elequently how we all feel about David and his extraordinary Gift. I sincerely hope that he gets to read this along with everyone’s heartfelt comments. I have never been so touched by an artist before. I’m not quite understanding the powerful affect that David’s music and spirit has had on me. I knew I wasn’t alone and that he was touching many other souls. I’ve just been beside myself with grief and reading all your comments has made me feel so much better. Seeing David’s interviews and seeing how gracious, loving and joyous he remains is helpful too. Thank you alll.
David: Thank you for sharing your angelic voice and extraordinary gift. I think you have a brave heart. God’s light shines through you and out to the world. Randy once told you something like on stage singing was what you were born to do and that is simply the truth. You’ve given so much to all of us in such a short period. We love you and your beautiful music. Stay close to God and let him lead you down the path he has already laid out for you. You will alway be our American Idol Forever.
After reading this Open Letter to David and all of the comments that have been posted, it makes me feel better about the emotions I have been feeling over the last few days. When they announced David Cook as the winner the other night, it felt as if the wind had been knocked out of me. I literally could not breathe. I did everything I could not to cry but, I couldn’t keep from it. I can’t even begin to explain how I feel at this point. All I know is that my life is forever changed because of a young man named David Archuleta from Murray, Utah.
Because I am 36, it almost seems weird to have such admiration and respect for a 17 year old boy. But, I don’t mind what others say. I absolutely adore David Archuleta. From the first note he belted out in his audition, I knew he was “different”. David was so full of life; you could just see the light around him! I fell in love with his beautiful smile, his adorable laugh, and his overall innocence. He reminded me a lot of Elliott Yamin from American Idol season 5. Elliott possessed many of the same beautiful qualities. But, even though I liked Elliott, I was mesmerized by David. I don’t know how to explain it, really.
Granted, I have liked other musicians and have even become teary on occasion. But, I have never been so captivated or touched as deeply as I have been by David. Although he possesses so many extraordinary qualities, it’s his voice that gets to me. It’s like Heaven. He truly touches me deep within my soul.
I’m really sad that the season is over. I’m going to miss turning on my television each week to see him standing there with that amazing spirit and humbleness. I’m going to miss seeing him walk across the stage with that nervous look on his face like it’s going to be his last night there. I’m going to miss him stumbling over his words when he is answering Ryan’s questions and I’ll miss the infectious smile he was never without. I’m going to miss his famous “lip licking” habit and his inability to hold back tears when his friends are sent home. But, most of all, I’m going to miss David Archuleta.
I try to think happy thoughts about what the future holds for David. I know that he is going to be very successful and that we have only just begun to see what he is capable of. I know that we will be writing about how proud we are of him when he receives his first Grammy and how we knew he could do it all along. I know that he is going to be okay. I really do. But, why is it that I feel such a loss right now? Why do I continue to have this huge lump in my throat?
I’m glad that I have this forum to come to, at least; to be among other loyal, devoted fans that love and appreciate David as much as I do.
Thank you!
I am much more senior than ladyvette826 and I share the same sentiments. Up to now I still feel a huge lump in my throat. I can’t explain why a 17 year old boy can affect me so much with his interpretations of songs that have been sung by others before him. He is really talented and he is so wholesome. He is a model for the young generation of today. I am sure he will be very successful and will be surrounded by good people who give him sincere guidance.
My children think I am nuts listening to his songs whenever I can and sourcing for information on him on the webs. All the people I talked to in SINGAPORE think he should have won.
We all hope to have the good fortune to see him perform life in Singapore in the near future and we are already looking forward eagerly to his first album release post AI7.
We adore you David James Archuleta!
