No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

Update: Jeff Archuleta had indeed received pre-authorization from someone at 19 Entertainment before he put everything in motion, and was reportedly very surprised when they changed their tune and pulled the plug. The producers apparently felt that a David concert would dilute interest in the Idol tour. There are two dates in Salt Lake, the first is sold out and the second is close to being sold out.
Well, I can’t say I’m surprised.
In yet another exertion of their iron-fisted power, 19 Entertainment has seen fit to crush the good intentions of David Archuleta by prohibiting his effort to selflessly express his gratitude to the people of Salt Lake City for their extraordinary support of him–and 19 Entertainment’s programming–during this year’s season of American Idol. This after allegedly giving Team David an initial thumbs-up for the event.
According to several Utah news outlets, the family thought they had a verbal agreement, but 19 Entertainment said late yesterday that “no one on the American Idol tour is allowed to make a public appearance until after the concert has passed through the town.” The tour dates in the SLC region are already sold out.
For good or ill, I have acclimated to the necessity of considering anything Idol-related with suspicion and skepticism. It immediately occurred to me upon learning of this concert that it was decidedly uncharacteristic of the ferociously controlling organization. Because there are nine other tour talents who could also conceivably fill venues on their own, the reluctance to license a potential chain reaction is perhaps understandable.
OH Man Rascal – I can’t believe your title. I am serious, that was my FIRST thought about this whole thing!! I swear you have ESP or some super psychic abilities and you read people minds!!! Do you have surveillance set up on my MAC? TOTALLY FREAKY BUT STILL AMAZING!
I just saw a Fox Utah story on this, and they said that AI higher-ups gave them the OK for the concert. The booking agency (CAA) apparently was the entity that said, “No way.” Something about he couldn’t perform in the same venue and city before the tour. They said the legal conflict came about because “the concert at the E center is NOT sold out.”
My question is: Why was this announced at all? Who is doing the PR work for David? Is it supposed to be 19 Entertainment or are the Archuletas responsible for their own management? Brett Hales was the spokesperson in the interview. He admitted that “the right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing.” I am a bit concerned about whether or not David has professional management in place dealing with these issues–or is 19E responsible and not doing their job? Does anyone know the answers to these questions?
Hmmm….I wonder if AI/19 had thought it was okay to do the concert at first, you know, like “why not let the boy have his little concert and thank his hometown.” and then it sold out, and there were contests to get tickets, it began to get too big? It was bigger than what the winner was doing and they maybe didn’t think that was appropriate? and then they have the thought like you said Rascal, if he can do this, how can we stop the other 9 from doing it as well, and then WHAT do we have on our hands, but a lot of smaller concert being given individually by AI contestants and taking away from the Tour? That is how I think the process must have went. Maybe I am not as acclimated as you are Rascal to the suspicion and skepticism. I think they would have said no from the beginning if they really had not wanted him to do his ‘good deed’. I just think it became more than what they thought when they initially said yes. well, what are we going to do for the month of June while he is sequestered into tour rehearsals? I really can’t even imagine not having any new news, hearing or seeing him doing this or that. At least when he was in the AI bubble we got to see him twice a week. But this time we won’t even get that. I hope they let them out once and a while for some appearances.
oh, just saw your post steve b. It wasn’t sold out? I heard it was. Do we know for sure it wasn’t, or were they just using that as a made up excuse? I really cannot see a concert in his own hometown, (murray is a suburb), NOT selling out, can anyone else?
Hey, Tinuviel– I heard it was sold out also. But the reporter said in the Fox Utah story that (at least one) of the concerts was not sold out. So I don’t know what the true story is to be honest with you.
Bumps in the road are to be expected.
Isn’t it said “To err is human, to forgive divine”
Everyone is learning as they go.
Good questions, steveb! It makes on wonder. I read Dean Kaelin’s journal, and wondered if it would in any way get David into trouble w/the AI folks? He didn’t say anything outright about the show being fixed or manipulated, but I think he certainly raised questions in a ‘read between the lines’ sort of way. I would really hate for David to be tripped up in his career because of shortsightedness and lack of proper planning by his ‘management’ team. His friends and family have his best interests in mind, no doubt. But he needs to be handled by pros at this point, I think.
This whole thing is just one more reason I am ecstatic that he didn’t win the title! Is he only under contract w/the show through the tour, or do they have rights beyond that?I don’t know how the Archuleta’s and David feel about his treatment while he was competing. My perception is that the producers did whatever necessary to ensure Cook won. My perceptions may indeed be colored by my own biases and by the constant barrage of negative media directed at David and his family.
Still, cutting any ties to 19E and AI asap seems like an intelligent goal!
I guess power, greed and ego abound in this industry. Let’s hope David gets all the support he needs to navigate his course among the sharks!
One last thing and my day really has to begin
I doubt this kind of set back will happen again.
It makes me wonder if they really understand how HUGE
young David is. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE!
And PR firms and lawyers are super expensive!!!
But, I’m sure it will be right the next time!! He’ll have more material and the concert will be longer!
Got to Run! Good day all! Love this blog!
thatmancansing-LOL about rascal having ESP – he does have an uncanny knack for writing what’s in my head on occasion.
I think the biggest blunder in this situation has to be the “announcement” from DA’s PR people before everything was solidified. Much of this could have been avoided.
IF I UNDERSTAND THE ARTICLES THAT I HAVE READ REGARDING THE CANCELLATION OF THE SHOW, IT IS NOT THE AMERICAN IDOL REPRESENTATIVES THAT DENIED DAVID THE OPPORTUNITY OF PERFORMING PRIOR TO THE TOUR. IT IS THE BOOKING AGENCY THAT STATED HE COULD NOT PERFORM AT THE SAME VENUE UNTIL AFTER THE TOUR COMES THROUGH THERE BECAUSE THE TOUR DATE IS NOT SOLD OUT YET. EVERYONE SHOULD TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE REASON FOR THE RESTRICTIVE RULE, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW HOW DISAPPOINTED HIS FANS MUST BE! I KNOW THAT DAVID IS SO APPRECIATIVE TO HIS FANS AND JUST WANTED TO THANK THEM BEFORE HE STARTED OFF ON HIS TOUR, SO HE MUST BE JUST AS DISAPPOINTED AS ARE HIS FANS.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, LET’S NOT GET ANYTHING NEGATIVE STIRRED UP AT THIS POINT. WHAT WE ALL WANT FOR DAVID (PRIOR TO STARTING HIS TOUR) IS THE CONTENTMENT OF KNOWING THAT HE UNDENIABLY HAD A “PERSONAL BEST” ON THE NIGHT OF THE FINALE AND HE WILL, NO DOUBT, HAVE A SUCCESSFUL CAREER BECAUSE THERE IS NO HOLDING HIM BACK WHEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY! TO DAVID, i SAY YOU HAVE EARNED THE RIGHT TO RELAX, ENJOY THE TOUR AND THE COMPANY OF YOUR FRIENDS AND LET US HEAR FROM YOU AT THE EARLIEST OPPORTUNITY. WE WILL ALL BE THINKING OF YOU AND LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR FIRST OF MANY ALBUMS. GOD BLESS YOU, DAVID.
Mary Lee — PLEASE no shouting here!
I think this is actually perfectly understandable from a contractural standpoint. I do think the “thank you” concert can wait. To me, this is no big deal. They could have let it happen but they would have opened up the floodgates and I can understand wanting to prevent that.
Hopefully, the DA camp can chalk this up to a lesson learned and move on quickly. I’ve been irked at the AI machine all season for trying to keep DA in their pre-determined mold. I get the game, but I think it would have been amazing to see him soar without restrictions.
But in this case, from purely a business standpoint, I think the restrictions make sense – whether it comes from AI or the venue. Businesses have rights as well as those they represent, and in the ideal world, there is a mutual integrity, one for the other. But I’m not sure it does DA much good to paint him as a victim each time there is a snafu. I agree he could use good management, a good attorney, good PR people who can help him avoid them. With so many players now in the mix and complicated contractual obligations up the wazoo, these “misunderstandings” are inevitable if they’re not approached with much wisdom and due diligence. Everyone’s learning.
Richard on FB mentioned how impressed he was with DA’s unwaivering commitment to doing the right thing (I’m paraphrasing) – even in this instance. In the longrun it will serve him well. After all, it’s what admire so much about him (as you all have expressed so eloquently) and what comes through so beautifully in his music. In my opinion, what you do in life is important, but perhaps more important is HOW you do them. And DA continues to do what he does so well with the upmost class and grace.
Rascal,
Remember the old adage: A oral agreement is not worth the paper it’s not written on.
abcidol – agree with you on all of what you wrote. He’ll have the best rep’s and attorney’s money can buy when this is all over. A class act. It’s like welcome to the real world, nothing is good until it’s signed on the bottom line – and even sometimes that is not good enough.
But anyways, I am dropping this subject. Too many cooks in the kitchen, I’ll be sitting at the table waiting for the meal.
Finally, I’m done now.
I checked and indeed, the concerts are NOT sold out as was reported (why is it that you rarely hear the truth about anything in the media?) Granted, the tickets were behind the stage, but still . . .
However, the e-center is certainly NOT the only venue in Utah! If it were only the ‘booking agency’ not wanted to lose money, then let’s find another spot. I can think of 5 or 6 off the top of my head that would fill – and have more seats available.
So as usual, it’s probably a combination of AI and the e-center nixing it. Or something else entirely. (See how cynical I’m becoming about the media?)
My first question was also your first question steveb: Please, can we have some professionals handling this precious gifted individual? It worries me a bit. As we’ve seen, if you only have good-hearted intentions (and I know the people surrounding David do) you will get crushed at times by the industry. Good-hearted intentions plus industry savvy is what is needed.
Rascal, thanks for the new colors in the comment box! My eyes don’t feel so old anymore!
Yes, thank you for the new colors in the comment box. I can see!
Since the benefit concert tickets weren’t even to go on sale until 10 today, I say no harm done. Live and learn.
Meanwhile, it’s a drizzly day in Utah (really rainy in parts) and a perfect day for David to hang out with friends or play on the piano and just rest and relax and refuel. It’s just fun to know that he loves performing for us as much as we love to hear him perform. I’m excited for him to be able to perform all summer long and I think he’s really looking forward to that as well. What a great summer job!
I’ll just have to replay all the old clips to get my David fix this week…..
…So sorry to anyone offended by my “CAPS”….I really did not intend it to be “shouting”…just wanted my message to be seen among all the concerned messages pouring in for David, God bless him!
Thanks Marylee for the clarification on the Tour date not being sold out. That is standard for them not to hold a similar event before another that has not sold all of it’s tickets yet. It is the same reason we have ‘blackouts’ for sporting events when tickets aren’t all sold. Thanks, Rascal for creating this wonderful spot where we can all log in and get a little David fix and get the latest news from everyone. This is about the only site I check anymore. Fanblast and rickey.org some, but I check this one first thing every morning. It is very USER FRIENDLY, as I feel more and more that all of the users are my friends!
And so it goes. Business is business and AI is a business. I, too, was initially surprised that he was allowed to have a concert prior to the tour and was assuaged by the thought that the two that were scheduled at SLC were sold out.
So, just a hiccup. “David Archuleta” is now a business, one is a fish bowl, for all the world to see. I have complete certainty that the business of “David Archuleta” will do just fine as it learns the ropes of capitalism at a whirlwind pace.
It is too bad about the concert. I was so looking forward to seeing the new Youtube performances. It does seem understandable though. I was thinking of your title “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished” regarding some of Finland’s reaction to David’s singing “Be Still My Soul”…. LOL!!! Oh Well, he sang it beautifully anyway! Cheers!
Estel4D – do you mind expanding on Finland’s reaction. As stated, some of us here, mainly check this website and don’t always have time to make it out to others and we rely on the members here to keep us up to date. Or anyone else that knows this story?
If it was the venue, they were concerned about, how about Edwards Stadium in Provo (not technically David’s home town) which seats 64,000? I’m sure it would sell out easily.
I don’t think people quite realize how epically huge David Archuleta is in Utah. There, he is bigger than the Beatles. Alas, I think a lid is being firmly clamped down on David, and they won’t let him do anything that hints of his Mega-Rock Star status among fans.
I doubt it is just the venue, I imagine that they wouldn’t allow the DA concert within a certain distance from the Tour concert. Naturally they want to sell out the Tour concert and probably feel like this other DA concert might keep people from buying a ticket to the Tour if they already got to see DA in a previous concert. Probably if the Tour concert had already sold out, they wouldn’t have had a problem with the DA concert being there.
Here you go: http://www.myfoxutah.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail;jsessionid=3B4AD25E22F2CA20FC453622B044726A?contentId=6689779&version=4&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=1.1.1&sflg=1
Makes sense. Sounds like (seemingly) peripheral parties with an interest and a stake in all this, who weren’t sufficiently kept in the loop. I’m sure this kind of thing happens all the time. The only difference is that we’re all SOOO invested in DA’s interest that we can’t help but feel protective of him.
Feelin the love!
Tinuviel – The melody to “Be Still My Soul” was originally “Finlandia” the unofficial national anthem of Finland composed by Jean Sibelius. The Christian lyrics to the song were written back in 1752 but have been sung to the Finlandia melody for years.
When David sang for those kids in church – Someone recorded it and now it is everywhere! The Finnish media is all over this story: American Idol contestant David Archuleta is singing their national anthem…
I was just reading some of the comments from Finland on YouTube. Many are really positive – But many were “outraged” that an American would change the lyrics to their beloved song. To me the whole thing is kind of hilarious. For such a sweet drama free kid – drama seems to follow him everywhere. LOL! Bless him…
And here is just one more take on the saga….
http://idolator.com/394941/american-idol-producers-to-david-archuleta-youll-play-for-your-hometown-fans-when-we-tell-you-to-little-boy
It seems as though we’ve heard much more about DJ in the news than any of the other idols…my but he is soooo popular!
I would go see him more than once – especially if I knew my $1 was going towards charity….sheesh AI – fun suckers.
Thanks Josie for the clip. It is so nice of you to share.
Eunice- I love to share and I’m a good finder
Josie, you sure are a great finder. I am so glad that I can actually chat with DA’s fans here. Wow, what a relief! I now know I am not the only one who has been touched by DA’s voice. Please find more informations on DA and share them with us. Thanks again.
To brighten the rest of your Wednesday… and put things back into perspective:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKy06NFX-mU&feature=related
**and also to remind all of us that anyone who can sing like this will be fine. Carrie Underwood had to live under the same rules and regs of 19 and AI, and she’s come out all right. Mix-ups and miscommunications happen all the time… David needs a break anyway. Have you looked at the concert schedule? Inhuman! LOL
That’s funny about the Finnish.
So in the LDS Hymnbook it indicates that the hymnbook arrangement was copyrighted originally in 1933 by the Presbyterian Church. If the Finnish had had a problem with it, wouldn’t they have done something about it back then? This is an old hymn. The words were written by Katharina von Schlegel who was born in 1697. It’s not unusual to have hymns use old folk tunes for the music.
What an uptight world we live in.
Thanks Estel and daisychain – yes, folk tunes are often used. Our own Star Spangled Banner is sung today to a tune written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreonic Society titled ‘To Anacreon in Heaven’. It was an English drinking song, very popular. LOL, so I guess maybe our world isn’t as uptight as it might seem sometimes. Ha ha.
Still, a pretty laughable explanation since they actually had to ADD the second tour date when the first sold out in about 15 minutes. Diluted interest? I think not. Since AI is on my blacklist right now I’m in favor of thinking that they can’t bear everyone knowing they actually got it wrong. David is so popular right now – he’s too HOT to handle! Cookie is boring. Thanks bigsky for the reminder of his awesomeness – as if we needed it!
I hope you set them straight on YouTube, Estel.
I’m not feeling like YouTube today.
So this is what I’m doing for my ODD today. I require myself to do a chore before I can check the websites. Actually, I paid the bills while I watched AI reruns. I fast forward through everyone but DA. It’s great. Just took out the trash – it’s garbage day tomorrow. Next I have to run to the store, but I’ll listen to him while I go.
Not gettin’ any better………
I don’t understand, Jason Castro had his homecoming concert last Friday over here in Dallas. Why can’t David has his?
#35 daisychain: You might be doing better than me. I actually FORGOT to pay a bill during the Idol show. When that happened, I had to give myself a little talk!
I wanted to tell you how deeply touched I was by your comment yesterday on the previous posting.
“I have room for one more child in my heart and I probably won’t ever meet him. I find myself praying for him and worrying about him and feeling true love for this young man who has the courage to be a voice for good in this jungle of a world – and not just in his little circle of friends and neighbors, but on stage in front of millions of people. I want goodness to win. I want right to prevail. I want the world to change. And here comes a young man of 17 reaching into our hearts with his songs and spirit and filling us with the desire to be better. It’s truly a miracle and he is a gift from God.”
That was so beautifully written, it made me cry. Thank you.
I truly feel that way and am glad I hit a common chord with someone. I think that’s part of the fascination – watching a miracle in progress and not wanting to miss a moment of it.
Rascal, i totally agree with you. although I would love to see David A. ALONE in a concert, we also have to consider that he put himself into this business and there are a lot of things going on behind the camera that we know nothing of. There are certain protoclos to follow and although I trully believe that David’s team went ahead with this concert with pure intentions in their mind and hear, we cannot just disregard the business aspect of this endeavour. For me, it was a matter of miscalculation and miscommunication. someone mentioned here that they should have looked for another venue, but we also have to remember that David just went home last week and will be back this saturday to LA. from what I understood, this concert was not planned a long time ago. It was an idea that they have recently primarily to thank the utah supporters. Maybe since the first tour was sold out in 15 minutes, they thought that by the time the concert will be on its way, the second date whould be okay as well. As I’ve said, It also might have been micalculation on both parts. There are a lot of possibilities. I hope everyone will look at the situation with an open mind and maybe learn something from it. Afterall, everyone in their own way, would want David to succeed, for fans its because of a more personal reason, for others, because of the business aspect of it. either way, it’s all for David Archuleta
Daisychain – are my twin? Were we separated at birth?
I love what daisychain wrote, BEAUTIFUL and Thank You. We all have to put aside all the negativity and live in a positive thoughts, words, and actions. Life is too short to worry all these confusions. I don’t want to miss the moment of miracle with David as daisychain put into words from the heart. I wanted to share a verse from the bible 2John 1:6 “This is LOVE, that we walk according to HIS commandments.”
And I want to continue this walk with David. God Bless US all. I love U David!
daisychain – wow “watching a miracle in progress and not wanting to miss a moment of it.”
I love, love, love that!!! That vision will be in my head forever.
And if we need any more positive thoughts read the more than 700 poems at fanblast. All awesome.
Josie – also, love the idolator – when David’s gets the power to make decisions on his own “WATCH OUT”
Sometimes, less is more. I am patiently waiting for this miracle to arrive!!!!!
the concert itself just to show how DA and his team appreciates the people around them. what a gesture! since it’s not going to happen as they wanted it to be, one can then say it’s the thought that counts.
Why is there so much controversary over David?? The more the media gives him attention the bigger he will be…so I am all for the attention. Though I wish it were all good. I do want right to prevail and goodness to win and the world to change….”waiting on the world to change” as David sang. Any my friends here on fanblast David is the one to do that!!!!!!!!
The poems over at Fan Blast are great. I wrote one myself but, I didn’t enter it to win the tickets. I just wanted to show my love for David. I hope that they will print them out or something and give them to him. It would be such an inspiration for him when he starts to feel as if things are just too much to handle.
I also liked what daisychain said: “watching a miracle in progress and not wanting to miss a moment of it”. That is exactly how I feel. I want to witness every dream come true, I want to see him win all of those awards, and I want to see him sing at the Olympics someday. I will be cheering him on through it all.
Totally off topic — but I’m curious if anyone else here agrees that David might have a chance at cross-over success if he sang “his rendition/remix” of Smokey Mountain Memories.
If Kelly Clarkson can sing a duet with Reba McIntyre, then I suspect we might see David on a CMT or ACM awards show sometime in the future… especially if Dolly Parton has any say in it. Am I nuts? I’m a country fan — so maybe this is just hopeful thinking.
First of all, bigsky, you are not nuts. Well, if you are then I am too. I totally agree that David could sing and quite successfully, SMM. We ain’t seen nothin’ yet from this amazing young man.
thatmancansing: “watch out” might actually be an understatement. I believe David is just bubbling on the surface right now and break away from the AI Tour and AI itself, and he will unleash music that reaches far deeper into our souls than he already has…oh, and he’s only 17.
David is such a non-conformist and in a really good way- he stands by his convictions of what is good and true and he believes and makes us believe. I would admire that in an adult, and yet he is only 17, so I admire it much more.
I’m voting for Daisychain’s post from yesterday, but quoted here today (#37) as the brilliant post of the day. What beautiful words daisychain. You rocked my world with those!
bigsky ~ I was sort of thinking the same thing. Even though I love Pop and most rock, I have been a country girl my whole life. I absolutely LOVED David’s take on Smoky Mountain Memories and I wondered the same thing about him doing a duet or something with one of the female singers. My choice: Martina McBride or LeeAnn Rimes. Maybe even Trisha Yearwood. I don’t think I would want him to do it often…but, at least once for sure!
Also, for anyone interested in reading a wonderful review about David…a friend over at Fan Blast posted a link to a site that you might like to visit. The address is http://www.MasterClassLady.com and she wrote a review of David’s finale performance. If you look to the left of the page, the link is called something like David Archuleta Runner-Up. It will make you smile to know that he did get some good reviews after his knockout performances!
Woah! You guys have to be my parenting mentors! I’m not that young but a young parent nevertheless – my boy is almost 4 and my daughter is 18 months old. I love for my kids to emulate David’s characters. I hope both my husband and I do as well as Jeff & Lupe has done with their 5 kids.
Regarding the cancelled concert, most of you have already voiced out so I have nothing new to add except wishing for the 100th time for the Jive record to be confirmed. Cook, please hurry up with yours so we can get with it! And also an official DJA website maintained by Jive themselves.
It’s an AI-news drought month yet David is very much in the media and both the concert & BSMS stories are made bigger than they were. LOL news do follow him, oh well negative publicity is still publicity, however much we dislike it happening to David. Besides Cook, I dont think anyone will really give it another day had it been KLC, RM, SM, JC (contentious considering his popularity), Chi…gosh, who else were in the Top 10?
David, I love your voice and your personality so much and I’m following your journey closely, enjoying every ODD moment. So good or bad, we are “WITH YOU”!
Pardon my off-topic-comment, but I can’t help it. It is Wednesday night, the day when I would religiously watch AI (remember they show it here, in Panama, a week and one day late), and I miss hearing DJ sing. I sat in front of the TV hoping for some miracle. I also have to confess I was feeling pretty miserable that I was going to miss the Friday concert, buying the tickets from a Tuesday to a Friday means paying a lot more, and I was going to suffer all Friday long. I hope I will find out when HIS own concert will be well in advance next time.
I went to the links posted before me, and I was so happy to find David singing in the link provided by #31bigsky. It made me cry. Sorry, I’m having an ODD moment, and I need it to share with others who would understand. I better leave this computer now (alright, just for a couple of hours).
kccy – Re: The Jive deal…Trust me when I say just be patient. Take it as a very good sign that we haven’t heard of a deal yet because that means that all of the details are being reviewed and re-reviewed by David and his lawyers. I would rather have to wait a little longer for David’s album if it means David’s contract is one that he is comfortable with. Remember that ultimately there are several record companies waiting in the wings if the Jive contract somehow doesn’t come to fruition. Personally, I think 19E and Sony BMG are not that stupid. They know how in-demand/popular David is and I think they will be willing to follow David’s wishes because of that very fact, but again, working out these details takes a lot of time. As rascal has so astutely pointed out on several prior occasions, trust the Archuleta. David is a lot smarter than you think.
I am so glad to be back here tonight!! I had another rough experience w/friends today. I don’t know if this type of thing has happened to any of you or not! I am so excited about David that I know I talk about him to those who could care less, too often. Well, today, at breakfast, I brought up the poetry competition so I could share my favorite poem w/my friends, and one of them put his hands over his face and moaned. I just felt so embarassed and humiliated! How can you care so much about someone you don’t even know? He probably isn’t like he shows himself to be on TV anyway. All those ‘gosh’s’ are just acting…blah, blah, blah…Have any of you heard this stuff before? So, all day I have been feeling really hurt, and misunderstood. Why is it not “normal” to feel love for another human being? To deeply appreciate and treasure a person who you’ve never met? I appreciate daisychain’s comments so much!! I’m afraid to talk about him anymore, because everyone I know just doesn’t get it AT ALL! Maybe this really is weird. David has become this huge part of my life! I genuinely care about him and love him! I’ve never been obsessed with or so ‘fangirl’ about anyone in my life, and I am 46 now. Am I the only one feelilng some really nasty backlash from others about David? Everything that happened today has just left me feeling so ‘abnormal’ or weird or maybe just isolated…I don’t know. Is it weird to care about another human being and be excited for them? Can anybody help me?
Elannbo – I think that some of us non-teenager types have found that the goodness that shines out of David and the very specific sound of his voice brings out that same nurturing thing we might get for a niece or nephew who we really connect with. Seeing David develop week after week forms a kind of bond and it is hard to explain to those who either don’t feel it or were not following the show to the same extent. And watching things like his EW interviews makes us love him more. Just tell them that he brings out that strong nurturing feeling in you because that is really what it is. It is true, though, that just with my own kids, you have to make sure that it doesn’t become your whole life but let yourself enjoy the journey of this wonderful person. I feel the same way about some of the kids I tutor – they just strike a wonderful cord in me. David’s voice, too is one of the few voices that I want to hear over and over and over for the feeliing that it evokes. Many, many people feel this way about David’s voice – it is unusually powerful and spiritual even if the person listening is not spiritual. I would say to low-key it around people who don’t understand and enjoy it for what it is to you.
Elannbo- The most I’ve let people know of my fascination with David is to tell my wife and kids that I think he’s a great kid and amazing singer who is going places. My wife can tell when I think really highly of someone and is a little puzzled by my being so impressed with a young singer who drives the teen girls crazy. (very untypical for me) To some others I’ve made a few brief remarks. Once, when someone was wisecracking on DJ, I came forward and matter of -factly shot the joke down, stating with authority that DJ is an incredibly talented kid who’s got a big heart & routinely helps people. ”He’s a great kid” (feel like a broken record but it sort of sums him up in a simple way)
I wouldn’t feel comfortable declaring the extent of my fascination with David to anyone save my fellow ODD’s here. It’s like many have said here, you either get it or you don’t. I feel that those of us who get David are privileged, a little obsessed, but privileged. I’m not about to try to explain it to anyone, as it would be futile. In the end it will all pay off; it does now. Most of us believe that David is headed for true greatness. How could we feel otherwise after all that we’ve seen?
My advice to you, if you’ll have it, is to guard yourself. Test the waters lightly with people. Eventually you are going to come face to face with other ODD’s and when you do, have a field day! I don’t mean to bottle yourself up, just protect yourself from the negativity. They don’t get it, they won’t get it. Why bother? We’ve discovered someone truly unique who inspires us. Personally I don’t want that little piece of me open to criticism or worse, ridicule.
Elannbo ~ I am 36, married, and a mom to three children. My oldest will be 15 soon. You’re not crazy and you are not alone in the way you feel about David. As for your friends giving you a hard time…I think we all get it in some way or another. People have a hard time expressing their emotions these days. They think that showing affection or being sensitive is a sign of weakness. At least that’s how I see it with most of my friends and family. Most often than none, the people who don’t understand are the ones who have never been attached to anything. You know, a teddybear, a piece of clothing, a family heirloom, etc. If you don’t have it in you, you just don’t understand when others do. I don’t discuss my O.D.D. with my family and friends. Instead, I come here and to Fan Blast and I talk to those of you who understand. If people don’t want to take a minute of their time to listen to what we have to say, then that’s just being selfish. Don’t worry though…we are all here any time you want to talk!
ITTO, thanks for the re-assurance about the Jive deal. I am hoping that David’s contract will be way more attractive than you know who….in every sense, a WIN-WIN situation for David and the future TPTB. Lets drink to that!
elannbo-I know how you feel-completely. But I experienced it more during the AI season, right here with my own family! I got to the point where I would record the show and wait until everyone had gone to bed before I’d watch, so I could enjoy it without snarky remarks from my husband and daughter. Well, something must have clicked towards the end because both of them wanted to watch with me (they secretly liked (not loved) David) and we sort of settled on a happy medium. Now, I don’t really care what anyone thinks and I listen to David when I want and talk about him when I want. I tend to let people know that for a 17 year old, David Archuleta is more humble and genuine than even them. That really ticks them off – and I just smile.
Because afterall, I AM THE LUCKY ONE.
kccy-enjoy your munchkins each and every day-before you know it, they’ll be 18 and 20! It seems like just yesterday, my girls were little and I woke up one day and they were all grown up. Parenting is the hardest job I’ve ever had, while at the same time, the most rewarding one.
Hi rascal
elannbo- I can relate to what you are feeling. I keep my ODD mostly to myself, quickly looging off when any one comes near the computer (husband, 4 kids) People who don’t “get” David can be extremely harsh… even suggesting a sexual attraction. For me the Connection to David is aspiritual one. His voice is a gift that touches hearts and souls and I believe he will use it to touch millions.I am thankful that we can come here and express this “stuff”
bigsky I agree with your theory!!
keep shining David!
josie-the “watch out” comment is soooooo an understatement. I agree.
josie – agree the watch out part totally an understatement
Can I just say that in the song When You Believe there is this lyric
my heart so full I can’t explain
When I listen to his voice I swear my heart swells two sizes, it is so strange.
This is how I feel about Archie, it is unbelievable, I NEVER EVER would think I could feel this about someone I don’t know.
I feel like he is about to explode with music. I think is like a steamroller of song going along a path and I am just waiting in that path to get smashed by this amazing voice.
P S. The lyric also goes on to say – seeking faith and speaking words I never thought I’d say – all true for me
And I can’t get my head around how he sings the word say. Just amazingly incredible.
Thanks for the contract info., ITTO. Is this ‘inside’ info?
(Just asking.)
I have learned to contain my ODD symptoms while in mixed company. But I set aside an hour a day (at least) to blog fanatically for my favorite singer-slash-17-year-old-boy in the world. Sometimes I slip up with the family. My husband reacts with a stone-face and cool responses (jealousy-he admits it) and my kids still think it’s cute. They like Arch, but they don’t get him completely. They didn’t watch Idol but heard snippets via the ‘net.
Wait until after the tour concert. Ha-ha-ha!
I was going to fly out for the concert and am disappointed they didn’t let David give back out of that massive heart of his. Oh, well. He’ll do it in time. I want him out of AI’s clutches and hope that David and his family are taking their time to make certain that the contract with Jive Records is exactly what David wants.
This is off-topic, but I check out each and every single solitary David Archuleta anything, and I did not hear the radio interview when David was told of Constantine’s tasteless remarks. Can anyone provide the link for me, pretty please? Thank you so much!
Bookaholic – you might check rickey’s, like the threads after threads after the finale. If I find it I will link it.
Ditto on the thanks ITTO -
I have witnessed contract negotiations of some magnitude, not at David’s level, which sounds overwhelming, but big enough, and they do take a lot of time. ALOT of time!!!! I don’t think David is soooo greedy, but greedy for more creative freedom would be a must. (Just a guess) So I have faith this all will work out, like I said before, whoever it is would be NUTS not to make it work. Let’s hope he finds exceptional material and producers to help him reach his highest potential, but I think he already sets that bar really high for himself anyways.
It’s all good, good, good!! I am so excited for him, his family and for his fans!!
PS – Already have been steamrolled by his voice – case in point – Apologize – rolled smooth, smooth, smooth, When You Believe – rolled flatter than a pancake.
Oh my Gosh!!! I can’t believe how many of you responded to mywittle melt down! I can’t thank you all enough for your wonderful comments. It is really meaningful to know that you are not alone, not crazy or weird or whatever….
I have always been one of those people who is probably too open w/their thoughts and feelings. I will really have to be more guraded, musicao, totally agree. This has hurt me more than once.
I am a Buddhist, and like refnaf, my attraction to David is a spiritual one in part as well. When I heard him sing ‘Imagine”, my thought was, “OH!! The light of the universe is just channeling right through this kid!! WOW!! He’s SO OPEN!!” I was hooked, floored, awed….WOW.
Thank you all so much!! Maybe I was just having a little ‘menopause moment’, but it really does hurt me when others ridicule David, or ridicule me for being passionate about him.
Thank you all!!! I will reserve my ODD for you guys from now on!
O.k. fellow ODD’s… I have taken the leap, and have begun making requests to the TOP COUNTRY RADIO STATIONS for David’s version of Dolly’s “Smokey Mountain Memories”.
I have NO huge desire to see him take on country music — I think he’ll find his OWN niche – and it will be PERFECT for him. HOWEVER, this is a true country song, and his rendition is breathtaking. So – I sent my first request this morning to Nashville’s “The Big 98 – WSIX FM” – (via their contact form: http://www.wsix.com/pages/contactus.html)
Phone Number to the WSIX studio: 615-737-9800 – I plan to call them this morning as well.
What would A.I. do if David took off on this unexpected route? Hmmmm.
PS: I’m late getting started on my day — complications of my ODD!! So PLEASE — if you belong to other message boards, could you please cross post my message above (at #64), and encourage others to do the same OR contact their own favorite country radio music stations? THANKS!
Not sure if the link below is truly David’s official MySpace page or not, but when you open the page, it is definitely David singing a song I hadn’t heard before (“Angels in the Alleyway”) — beautifully, of course! — enjoy!
http://www.myspace.com/davidjarchuleta
The song on the myspace page has been available on iTunes and amazon… not sure if it’s from a previous CD he’s made, or something that was released as a single… It’s called Angels in the Alleyway – Fear vs. Faith Album.
Bookaholic the links are on kccy’s #54 post on the “No Lights No Camera..” thread. Sorry wasn’t able to paste the link.
bigsky and all-David recorded these with Merrick Christensen – here is a link to his website: http://www.merrickchristensen.com/music.php
David sat down with Merrick and recorded Angels in the Alleyway and The Most Beautiful Part Is in about 2 hours.
Enjoy!
Bigsky and all – Can I just tell you – I totally cried when I heard those Merrick songs. I think he was 14? Worth every $2 for them. Again steamrolled!
Booaholic, found the interview, my favorite ever.

If that doesn’t work go to Rickey.org, “We miss you already thread”, post 114.
You can feel the happiness in his voice.
TOfan, bigsky, thank you so much for providing these links. Recorded in 2 hours ?!!! Talk about natural talent. Have a great day!
Check this out! David has officially been signed to Jive!

DAVID ARCHULETA SIGNS TO JIVE RECORDS
(New York, NY) – It was announced today that American Idol sensation David Archuleta has signed to 19 Recordings/Jive Records. Archuleta is currently gearing up for the upcoming American Idol tour which kicks off on July 1st in Glendale, AZ. The 17-year old is expected to release his debut album later this year.
“Signing a record contract with 19 Recordings/Jive Records is truly a dream come true,” states Archuleta. “Being a fan of American Idol since season one and admiring the alumni, I am honored and humbled to be a part of that group. I’m really excited to start working on everything.”
David Archuleta, the runner-up on the current season of “American Idol,” has three songs entering the Hot 100 this week, starting with his stunning remake of John Lennon’s “Imagine” at No. 36, along with his highly-praised rendition of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,”and his finale song, “In This Moment.”
Simon Fuller, creator of the popular TV series and chief executive and founder of 19 Entertainment Label Group, states, “It was fascinating to watch David’s journey through Idol. He is a genuine pop star, and is a gifted singer who instantly won over a huge audience when he first appeared on the show. Since then, he has dealt with the pressure and the high level of expectation with real fortitude; he’s given us some of the best performances of the season. Without question David Archuleta has a great future ahead of him”.
Tom Carrabba, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Jive/Zomba Label Group comments, “David Archuleta has already shown the world that he is a star. He’s a young, talented singer with wide appeal and we’re thrilled to have him join our roster.”
David Archuleta is from Murray, Utah, a town outside Salt Lake City. He recently came to national attention and captured the hearts and imagination of a nation with several show-stopping performances on “American Idol.”
YAY!!!!!! Watchtower, I just found out about the Jive record deal at Fanblast! I mean we all know its in the working, but it is just so awesome to know it is finally confirmed. YAY!!!! So overjoyed to hear this news. I still hope that the contract put both David & TPTB in a Win-Win situation, in every aspect.
David, CONGRATULATIONS on your signing! We love you very much! LOL even though you dont know us
BTW, OMG Smokey Mountains Memories is my absolute favourite live performance from David, No:1! And I dont even know the song before David sang it on AI. Amazing vocals IMHO, so much emotions going through that song, I was convinced I saw Smokey Mountains as I look out of the window. I truly understand why Dolly got teary eyed during the rehearsal.
Ellanbo, I can relate to your experienced. I was branded CRAZY and NO LIFE at work when they found out how much I adore and voted crazy during the AI, and how much humiliation I received when David did not get the crown. But, I don’t mind and care what they say, I remain vocal and showed to them my passion to David more after AI. I even get all their e-mail address and to their surprise they receive the youtube video of “Be Still My Soul”, wohla! most was emotionally touched and thanked me for sending that video. Some still tease me but in a humorous way, but I let them know my true feeling about David. I will never be silent about my passion for David, how can you not boast what David gave into my life, and how can you not blow one’s trumpet with his amazing gift, can someone tell me please! Bottom line, “i don’t give a damn”, it hurt but the David’s joy is worth fighting for. You are not alone ellannbo. Keep that David spirit alive. We are all chained and linked with his passion. So, let the world know we deeply love and passionate with our STAR David.
Wow! that’s awesome news aboue Jive!! No more speculation.
I have to say, this is all so suspenseful – what his first single willl sound like, what his first VIDEO will be like, how he’ll be marketed. It’s like we’ve seen just a glimpse of his potential for the past 6 months and are waiting to see it all unfold and take flight.
I think similar sentiments have been discussed recently on this board, but as someone who looks forward to having children in the near future, I imagine this is what it must feel like to discover your child’s special gifts, and then want to nuture that precious gift, share it with world and crave success through it, but then having to remind youself that in the end, your child’s own joy with that gift is paramount above any “wordly success” that gift can achieve.
Here’s to praying that he owns this opportunity and is able to stay true to his artistry. And that through it, he’ll have endless opportunities to share his gift in a way that will bring him and the rest of us pure joy.
Congratulations David on your recording contract. GOSH!!! soooo excited…the journey and passion continues…Thank you JESUS! I love you David, so happy 4U. I can hear you saying, “WHAT A FEELING”. Rock on David!
abcidol, there goes our ODD to the max!!!
.. the only better news I could hear today is that David will be paired up with Ryan Tedder..
That is great news! It has been a blessing and just sheer joy to watch him as he blossomed on AI and then even more on his post AI media blitz. It is exciting to watch him living out his destiny. He is truly a gift to this world.
David Archuleta Superstardom coming up. I’m all for lobbying Jive that the first release must be a double album immediately followed by an EP loaded with dream duets and early rarities. (Ha Ha ha)
great news!
Yay David! I’m so proud of him right now that I could literally burst. I loved what Simon Fuller said in the press release. David is going to be huge and no one on Earth deserves it more than this awesome guy!
I read a book before I went to sleep last night…trying to think of other things.
I woke up with “Think of Me” playing in my head. That happens all the time.
I’m so excited for David’s record contract. I’m sure he’s so happy. I think the timing will work out really well for him, and hope he find some fun songs to sing that he really loves the artistry of and the message of. I can pray for that for him.
Meanwhile, I’m getting my son ready for youth conference – three days of inspirational teaching, activities, food, fun, dance, and service. And cold. It’s a bit chilly for June here. 57 was the high yesterday in Salt Lake and the snow came down to 8,500 ft. so the mountains all have new snow on them. We’re still cloudy and a little drizzly today, so can’t see the tops yet, but this afternoon the sun will come out and it will be gorgeous. I’d take a picture and share the view that David looks at in Utah, but my view isn’t the same – I live 30 miles south and see different mountains and a different valley. When my children are on missions, I like them to send me pictures of their areas so I can visualize where they are in general, though my last one’s been home a year and I haven’t seen a picture yet! So thinking about David A for me is a lot like thinking about my children when they are away. I check for mail often and news and wonder what they are doing at a particular moment. I check the weather in their area (I have one in a tornado prone area) and I pray for them through their trials and struggles. In my ideal world, everyone would email me every day because I am an email queen, but alas, they don’t. This site helps fill my email void. Thanks, everyone, for your insiteful comments.
wor daisychain – 57 ARE YOU KIDDING ME? We have had 100+ here in Texas for a week now, and just praying and hoping for a little breather of 90 to give us a break and it is only June, usually those temps don’t come until July and August. Do me a favor and blow really hard down our way and maybe, just maybe we will feel it. As for mountains…..I don’t suppose David can move those kinds of mountains yet, huh? Guess I will have to be content to watch him move other kinds. It’s so flat here, you would think I could see all the way to Utah! I can’t relate to SMM, you would have to have memories for that. but I guess I can relate to longing for home. No, haven’t ever been gone long enough for that. furthest I have been is five days in NYC, and I sure didn’t want to leave……..
okay, I meant wow! oh who cares, David’s been signed!!!! whoo hoooooooooooooooooo!
