Starchild, Lightworker, Artist

Profound experience is a communion with the divine. Those who have been led to this place by way of David’s music, his character, and his journey may seek to explain this experience in many ways, and I think it is helpful to both respect these different modes of expression and also to recognize their limitations.
First and foremost, it is important to recognize that David is not and should not be construed as the source of divination nor even the portal to it, but merely a rare conduit or mechanism by which our own inherent connection to the divine is activated. In other words, David is for all intents and purposes a naive outside agent by which our own pre-existing heart connections are opened.
I don’t mean to in any way diminish this extraordinary gift of David’s, but we must be aware that both the connection and the divine itself reside in us, not in David himself (not, of course, that it doesn’t also reside in David, but no more so than it does in us). It is useful to maintain a recognition of this not only for our own perspective but also for David’s well being–it would be unfair to levy onto him the magnitude of expectation that would accompany such prophetic appointments.
Secondly, it would be helpful in the course of discussion to confine the scope of our language to personal experience. To some, a profound connection with the source of all things has an obvious religious connotation; it is, in effect, a “religious experience.” But there are many others, myself among them, for whom there is a distinction between spirituality, which has a personal experience dimension, and religion, which has an organized institutional dimension. Because personal experience is not limited by institutional self-perpetuation, it is often easier to share a spiritual experience than it is to share a religious one, even if they may be two sides of the same coin.
Finally, I think it is appropriate to comment here on the essential illusion. The success–or at least the nature–of the physical world is dualism, or the appearance of separateness. Up and down, black and white, past and future, good and evil are all necessary aspects of the physical construct, and so we must acknowledge and respect them, but we needn’t be ruled by them. We have the capacity to transcend the petty constructs of the world and see that all–all, mind you–is the essential One. Art has the power to break this illusion and bring us to this transcendence in a blistering, blinding moment. David is such an artist.
Rascal, seriously, thank you for voicing what I have been feeling for some time now. In your words:
“…David is not and should not be construed as the source of divination nor even the portal to it…”
“…it would be unfair to levy onto him the magnitude of expectation that would accompany such prophetic appointments.”
“…we must be aware that both the connection and the divine itself resides in us, not in David himself (not, of course, that it doesn’t also reside in David, but no more so that it does in us)”
To heap that kind of expectation on him almost seems, I don’t know, self-indulgent? I’m not sure that’s the correct assignation, but words fail me. All I know is David Archuleta, the BOY, (he is a boy, a wonderful boy, but a boy nonetheless) the exquisite artist, the dear sweet person, is enough for me.
OK, that said, I am beside myself in anticipation of the fruits of his unfolding musical career. And, since likely I will be unable to attend concerts, I ask myself will I ever be satisfied with cd’s and possibly over-produced (yet nary enough!) music videos after seeing the breathtaking live performances on AI? :::shoulder shrug::: Guess I’ll just have to adjust. (Sigh)
(For the record, whereas David makes me want to be a better person, I would have to say that Rascal makes me want to be a better writer. :p)
Just in the nick of time Rascal. Thanks! I feel bad about my comment boy now man. I meant no disrespect. I should have said young man. (I wish I could get my other login back, thatboycansing) I was having those same concerns, it is unfair to David. You may not believe this, but I was going to post that I was a little worried on the previous thread. I would love to see him on Oprah, only for the sole purpose of promoting his new album. I only wish to hear that great voice in a smaller venue, with less screaming, not to have huge philosophical discussions and put any undo pressure on David. Thanks again Rascal.
I got kicked of the computer – I wanted to say, I really don’t want to put any prophetic implications on David, and I am sorry if I did, I do feel really bad. He is so young and it’s not fair. I get the source thing, that’s all I meant to say, but that’s all about me. I’ll be happy if he sings about bubble gum and soda. That’s how much I love, love, love this young man’s voice.
As for the other stuff you said Rascal, I’ll have to read and ponder more to fully understand what it is you are saying. I won’t be able to write anything near as well you have in response to your above post.
ONWARD -
Will he make music videos? I guess so. They all seem so cheesy (I guess, over produced is the right word) to me. I guess that’s how it works, though. I am going to a concert soon, where the band hasn’t made a music video in years, I think there is only a handful of videos early in their career, crazy huh and they are awesome, no one of the best, live performers, and not pop, gospel or r&b! What band doesn’t make videos now a days, well not this one. Another amazing voice, really shy, but on stage he’s crazy wild. I am so excited! I’ll follow a good voice just about anywhere, even GRUNGE! My husband thinks I’m insane, so I’m going with a friend.
Did I mention I miss seeing David’s love for music every week. Can I make a request, if anyone videos the AI concerts, post it. I would love to see a live performance with no judging. I bet he will really gain a lot from this experience, like you Rascal, he is a fast study!! Are we all okay here? I hope so!!!
“like you said Rascal” – is what i meant to write. That picture is weird Rascal, but I think it goes well with your post. I am stopping now! Thank you again!!!
#4 – Rascal, the weird thing, I mean no offense it’s all in fun, so you can ignore my comment! Thanks for this blog!! I am really stopping now. I’m talking to myself online because my family thinks my ODD is out of hand. I’m for sure done now!! Good night!
David Archuleta isn’t just a teen sensation. He is a spiritual heartthrob. His music — that voice! — has the power to light up our souls and inspire us to seek our own connection to the Universal Truth, whatever we may call it. Music has always been a human activity of the highest order. Archuleta’s humanity resonates in a simple, clear, undeniable harmony, and many who hear his voice feel the connection to it.
Thank you, Rascal, for your thoughts about spirituality and religion. I don’t have a religious affiliation, but I recognize and admire David for both his spirituality and the commitment he makes to his religion. While I don’t need to know anything about his religion in order to feel the spiritual power in his voice, I have been curious about his Church and what specific teachings have inspired him. He seems to have the power to be free of the usual human constraints and open his heart fully to compassion.
The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein, 1954)
Thanks Rascal! What I appreciate about your note is that I don’t sense any judgment in what you share – just a nudge to keep our observations grounded in personal experience. One of the things I have liked about this forum is that I have seen people respectfully disagree with each other without becoming antagonistic. I admire the sense of honor that imbues these sharings.
I have been recognizing the potential pressure on David to live up to all of our expectations. As a human being, he will have opportunities to make mistakes – and learn from them. I, for one, will strive to love him unconditionally, in much the same way that he strives to do so with others. He is a young man of immense integrity. I hope not to add the burden of expected perfection to the “ministry” his spirit has embarked upon. I feel he is a healer, in his own way, but let’s not canonize this young man.
I totally agree that he is activating a recognition within us of our own spark of divinity – of our own innate goodness. And yes, I see him as a light worker. His appeal is universal – transcending nationality, religion, and political affiliation. He is also a prime example of someone “following his bliss” – a beacon for those of us who may be living “lives of quite desperation.” However, I need to guard against projecting all of my hopes, wishes, and ideals onto him.
I appreciate his talent. And, I admire the way he seems to really work at honing his instrument – his voice – by learning, practicing, and doing vocal exercises. His dedication to his craft is wonderful. And we are the grateful beneficiaries of his hard work and natural gift. I am both entertained and uplifted. What a joy!
I continue to send good thoughts/send light/pray for him and his family as he launches his career. May blessings abound for the highest good of all.
I couldn’t agree mor, Rascal! I have worriied that my comments about how David has moved me spiritually could be construed as something that he does to me, rather than him triggering a spiritual response in me. I see David as a very open conduit. When he sings, it is like the energy of the infinite is flowing freely through him. We all have that ability, to be open to the life force of which everything is a part. We all channel or express it in our own unique ways. I don’t want David to feel that he now has the weight of all these souls to bear along his path! That is not his responsibility. He just needs to be David, and do whatever it is that David wants to do with his life. We are all just very lucky to be able to hear his voice, feel his songs, and enjoy the trip with him! David is just one of the infinite number of ways that the universe is expressing itself. It’s a beautiful world!
Rascal -
Very, very well written. In my writings previously, I have said that David is light in the darkness but he is merely a reflection of the Light. We shouldn’t let ourselves, as profound as our experience may be, become overly fanatical.
There is no sense in arguing over one’s experience as they are personal experiences. If someone can relate their experience to their religion, so be it. If one is a spiritual person and they relate on a purely spiritual level, so be it. Each person’s experience is their own. Each person should respect each other’s experience, even if it doesn’t necessarily fit into their beliefs. We can learn a lot from each other even if we don’t subscribe to the same religion or one at all.
Politics has no place here. It distracts from the purpose of the site and is destructive rather than constructive.
Let us not become unfocused on why we are here. To hear David sing. To feel his voice touch us. He is also a unwitting role model as well to young and old alike. A lot has been put on him and he seems to be rolling with the punches and doing what he has to do… for us. All of us; no matter what our religion, or politic, or social status.
David Archuleta is an awesome young man; very talented, humble and genuine. Let’s keep rooting for him, keep ourselves focused and know that he is a just a person who happens to have touched us all.
PS- My only real hope for David and Oprah, by the way, is that David gets the chance to do an interview that has nothing to do w/his dad, and all the other typical media hype he has endured. Oprah has a much broader perspective, and freedom to ask whatever questions she likes. I think she would be very capable of giving David an interview that would allow him to really speak about himself, his goals and whatever else he might want to say.
elannbo – thanks! I still want to be on that Oprah train. I would love, love, love to hear that voice in a smaller setting. I would still go to great, no amazing lengths to get there!! That is just an easier location for me than say, MTV or something.
Didn’t I say I was done? Sorry!
Thanks, Rascal, well said, as usual. And thanks to abcidol, on the previous thread, for posting the link to the radio interview with Jeff Archuleta, who sounds like such a nice guy. He talks about the power of music to move people deeply, but reminds listeners that David, although thankful that his music has meant so much to so many, is “not trying to be anything more than a kid who loves to sing.”
Hi Rascal! I submitted a post earlier but don’t know if I submitted it correctly since this was my first time responding to your blog, having lurked on here for some time.
I don’t have the energy to rewrite what I tried sending earlier, and who knows, maybe it will show up eventually. But, I do want to say that it’s quite possible a higher divine source saw that someone like David Archuleta was the perfect instrument to use to inspire us and to believe in goodness, and excellence, and in divinity. How amazing, when you think about it, to use a gorgeous looking, super talented yet humble kid to spread light into a world darkened by a neverending war, economic crises, impending food shortages, increasing global warming, and other potentially apocalyptic disasters. How downright ingenuous of the spirits when you think that, in a culture like ours that values mediocrity, rampant consumerism, and overly sexed and unimaginative banalities passing themselves off as “art” or “entertainment,” in comes this unique and soaring voice (deceptively emanating from an unassuming yet adorable and awkward teenager) and from a cheesy yet most watched reality show no less to remind us of the divine. Archie is humble enough (and what insight at such a young age) to know that this is not really about him, just about his being willing to be an instrument of a higher power to give testimony to its existence. His “whole package” deal with his looks and personality got our attention. Now, his voice will do the rest.
And that is why David Archuleta will always be a shining testimony to the light and to the spirit. He is humble enough to surrender to that power, and we all witnessed that on May 20, 2008. Now those of us who recognized this sign are already committed to do better, to EXPECT better, and with the darker days ahead (think economic recession, even depression, and a destabilized world) we are more and more going to need a beautiful human being who raises his amazing voice in song, and – more importantly – who understands that it is through song that we will all feel the spirit that lifts us up to higher ground.
What a blessing!
Very well said, Rascal. I really enjoy reading your thoughtful, well-written opinions. Thank you for the effort you put into everything.
For me David has that mystical aura that is infinitely divine. I remembered reading the Linked Hearts: “Hearts linked by Jesus create a chain of love that can encourage the most grieving heart.” – D. Branon. What a simile how our hearts are linked through the love of David. Thanks Rascal for an eloquent thoughts, And-Thank You David, the Starchild, Lightworker, and Power.
Rascal great post it is also very inspiring and you did a great job with wording it and it is an awesome post. As for David you are just WONDERFUL and GREAT,INSPIRING and you honestly have this magical Aura about you that just makes you stand out in a crowd. You are truly An ANGEL in disguise sent from GOD himself to inspire us and to bless us with your gift and your talent. YOU ARE JUST AMAZING DAVID and i will stand by you forever and ever and i will be the first one in line to get your new 8x double platnium CD. I will support you through everything because you are GREAT and AMAZING and you have done and blessed and inspired us sooo much and thats the least we can dooo!!!! David we your fans Love ya!!!!!
I was thinking of the same quote at TOFan #12 – which made me check myself when I heard it.
David has said himself that he wants people to feel what he feels in music and be effected by it like he does.
I’d say he’s a master communicator. That’s the magic in his singing.
The reason I like David so much is that he represents what I wish that all teenagers were like(and of course his amazing voice). Having a good head on their shoulders and knowing right from wrong, not doing drugs, drinking, being respectful to parents, not jumping the bandwagon and dressing wild like other teenagers. He is a good role model for all kids and adults. I am not trying to put him up on a pedastal or say he is better than others, but in a world so full of more bad than good he is a breath of fresh air. Although he does have the power to move people and every time I watched him on AI my stomach would do flip flops!!!!! I would get so excited to hear him sing!!! Ha ha…severe case of ODD I guess!!
Thanks Rascal for responding to my email today!!
Well said, hello gorgeous #13 ! I couldn’t have said it any better. Thanks!
#13 – Hello Gorgeous – also loved your thoughts. Thanks.
Rascal -
One word. YES. To all you said. Just yes.
Rascal thanks for this.
David may just want to sing but also stated clearly on several occasions that he wants to help people with music in the way that other artist’s music had helped him. He was deeply touched to realize that he had already accomplished this for many people.
One of the wonderful things about David’s power over so many of us here is that there’s no agenda behind it other than his desire to reach us through the music. What he doesn’t realize is the profound effect a person of his quality has on people. By simply being himself and thereby displaying all his fine and rare qualities he has helped so many more get in touch with their deeper selves. Whatever the cause, be it good parenting, his faith, or simply his being one of those rare people made of a special fibre, the effect on others is undeniable. I think he’d be happy to know that by simply beng a sweet and good natured person he’s inspired others to be better people.
When I look back over our many posts I’m confident that, while there’s an over-the-top quality to our gushing and speculating, none here seem inclined to expect anything other than what we’re already getting. I believe our “fanaticism” is limited to just being fans. Fans who have also had their perspectives widened by minimal contact with a young man who inspires, by being the best person he can be.
David Archuleta, a stunningly powerful vocalist, and an awesome kid. Role models wouldn’t usually think of themselves that way, which is one of the reasons that we think of them as role models. As a parent and as a person who just wants to see our world become a better place I say, all the power to David. On a personal level with all the best intentions (none of them stalking ha ha) David’s still my hero.
PS Unrelated but wanted to get back to Tinuviel on a more current post. Thanks for the tip about Lara Fabian and “Te voglio..” I had never heard any woman perform it before. A beautiful and unique rendition very intense and passionate.
Elannbo while I don’t believe anyone here wants to lay that burden on David’s shoulders you point at the possibility of our words being misconstrued. I think we give ourselves license to run wild with the possibilities because Rascal’s blog has become our fan site in a way.
So if David, his family or friends ever read these posts, I’d want them to rest easy. This is all about cheering on the talented singer who has stolen our hearts and fired our imagination. It’s all good.
#18 – Well said!
I think it is so rare nowadays to find someone as you described. Not to mention the connection that people have with David is rare; so rare that some people may get carried away having experienced this connection for the first time. It just proves what a sad state of affairs our world is in and how I wish our world had more people like David in it.
Huge HUGE thanks, Rascal. Wow, you outdid yourself with THAT post—can’t thank you enough! Respectful observations, brilliantly written. Thank you for bringing us back to earth—the beautiful round glorious earth whereon David stands and performs his stunning artistry.
And speaking of artistry, please tell us who the artist of that marvelous painting is? (I guess it’s a painting?) Who is “R4D”? I think David has inspired so much art in so many forms, I’m enjoying seeing and learning and expanding my own artistic horizons in all of these forms, including….
…(more) thanks to the various commenters here who have brought new musical awareness to me… like Lara Fabian? Never heard of her, but thank you! And chasing down David’s faves has kept me up for many a happy YouTube evening. (Sara Bareilles?!) I could go on, but you’d probably wonder what rock I just crawled out from under!
And back to Rascal and his verbal artistry, providing us with a creative expansion in literary form… I absolutely MUST pass another heaping portion of praise down to the head of the table!
Exquisite.
Well said, another brilliant piece! I look forward to more, more, more, just like I look forward to more video and audio treats from David.
Inspired by David #18 – I would go further than that: he isn’t just a role model for teenagers. He’s a role model for every man and woman! The first time I saw David was when he sang “Heaven” (I was aimlessly flipping through the channels and came upon him – and even though I had sworn not to watch American Idol this season, because I was sorely disappointed in Melinda Doolittle’s loss last year, which had confirmed for me that the show was no longer about finding the best undiscovered talent and instead about finding the most marketable record-sales pusher – I was captivated enough to tune in every week just to catch a glimpse of David Archuleta.)
At the time, I was busy blogging daily about Black History Month and actually interrupted a series I was working on to gush to the world that I had a crush on a 17-year-old. I risked my edgy, political and academic credibility – which was obvious from my regular readers, who made fun of me for falling in love with a guy half my age (and some Mormon boy from Utah on a cheesy reality TV show no less) – to give testimony to what I immediately saw as a wondrous and beautiful human being. He was so genuine and moving when he sang “Heaven.” In all the seasons that I’ve watched this show, I’ve never witnessed anyone be so genuine and sincere in his delivery of music, and what a voice to boot!
Other unscripted moments (which is what I really really love about David – he is not someone you can script without making him come off as some Disney bubble gum pop precociousness) just sealed the deal. Like when he’s interviewed with his friend Alexandrea Lushington and blurts out that he doesn’t have the “black skills” to do a Randy impersonation. I mean, you just cannot script those kinds of lines! And it was all good because 1)Alexandrea’s impulse (like mine, since I’m also African American) was to laugh at the outrageous sincerity (which Archie added to when he justified this by saying that he’s “from Utah”, which made this even funnier) and 2)Alexandrea’s second impulse was to gently take his hand and “instruct” him on the “black skills” he needed to impersonate Randy. That she didn’t shake her head (as if to say, “this ignorant white boy, I cannot believe he just said that”) and, instead, wanted to guide him and teach him spoke volumes about who he was as a person and how he would be in his relationships with women (I too think of the way he was so openly receptive to taking the instructions from his admiring fangirls in the mosh pit to sit down on stage rather than choose the top 3 group during the Top 7 results show).
David’s good-natured receptiveness won him mega-cool points for me (especially since the cool factor for me lay precisely in his awkward dorkiness that any trained teenage performer on TV would have consciously tried to cover up). Of course, it was the week of Top 20, when he delivered the much celebrated performance of “Imagine,” and when he became emotionally unglued the following night when Alexandrea was voted off that made me a devoted and loyal fan the whole season (and here too, again, Alexandrea’s impulse, after singing her last song on the show, was to rush over and give him a hug). Only the warmest and kindest human being can elicit these kinds of responses, whether it’s singing a simple John Lennon song and adding your own inflections (even inspiring Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, to publicly acknowledge its genius) or being the kind of person who everyone wants to give a hug.
And it didn’t matter for me, after Top 20, how the others performed (and others did come close to giving me goosebumps – think Brooke White’s “Let It Be,” Jason Castro’s “Hallelujah,” David Cook’s “Always Be My Baby,” and Syesha Mercado’s “A Change is Gonna Come”), I remained loyal to David Archuleta and knew that, if he made the finale, he would deliver in spades. And boy, did he ever!
So, now that we all know that such a person exists, that it wasn’t artifice that a reality TV show as mean-spirited and manipulative as American Idol scripted for the general audience, that David Archuleta is the real deal, my faith in humanity has been rekindled. As a single thirtysomething woman, I now know that good men really do exist. And he may be only 17, but David Archuleta will be the measuring stick, from now on, on how I will evaluate any man who comes into my life. I’m sorry that I myself am not 17, but Archie doesn’t have to be a role model just for teenagers. He’s a role model for everyone. When he made his homecoming visit to Utah, he visited a radio station in which the boisterous DJs all said that he inspired them to want to do better and expect better from their partners and their friends.
Over on Idol forums, someone said that, after watching Archie, he now has gotten rid of the fake friends in his life to find genuine ones and that, he couldn’t believe it took a 17 year old to make him realize this.
There’s a great gospel song in black churches that goes, “Look at me! I’m a testimony!” And that’s really what David Archuleta is for me.
My only hope is that Jive will be true to who he is and capture his true essence while making him pop music marketable.
I posted this on another forum but thought it was appropriate here as well.
My friend’s mother (who I am very close to) is 87 y.o. and legally blind…voted every week for 2 hrs for David…I ahd to teach her how to use redial!
She constantly listens to a CD of David’s music that I made for her.
She said to me the other day..’A singer like David Archuleta comes along once in a generation…and sometimes not even that often.’
Coming from a lifelong Sinatra fan..I’d say that’s high praise!
I thank the Archuleta family for all the sacrifices they have made to share David with us…and thanks to David for brightening the life of a frail, elderly woman!
#12 or anyone else-
Can you please post the link to ‘hear’ Jeff Archuleta? I do not have an mp3 player.
Thanks
hello gorgeous -beautiful comment! I was always moved by the sincerity of that moment, and at first was afraid that there might be a backlash from those who may not have taken it that way. The fact that i never saw a negative reaction told me that David’s innocent sincerity made it through to everyone else too.
What you describe is David’s real power to effect positive change by just being himself – he doesn’t need to assume any title or actively set out to lead anyone. David simply emanates that power from the core of his being. Repeating myself but, I’m sure that David would be happy to learn of the positive results you’ve related here.
Thanks for saying it so well.
For me my interest in David the singer was piqued the day I accidentally switched onto AI and heard this sublime voice belting out “Heaven” -one of my favorite songs. Then “Imagine” came along and I was truly hooked.
I fell in love with David the person as the season went along when this shy, assuming young man delivered one heartwarming performance after another. His bashful and humble demeanor totally won me over. Who says he has no charisma and personality? It is precisely an abundance of these qualities that draws so many fans to this young man, especially after the pressure of the competition was lifted from his shoulders. In all the post idol interviews his sheer delight in live itself and in the unfolding musical career that lay ahead was an absolute joy to watch. He was animated, funny, gracious, unpretentious, knowledgable about his music and at all times flashing that endearing smile of his.
I still feel an injustice was done by that certain someone who was on all the talk shows the day of the finale deriding David as a “bad interview” and therefore undeserving of the title ( I thought this was a singing competition not a talking one ). To me that was appalling behavior and highly unprofessional for a judge ( who is supposed to be impartial ) to so openly be rooting for the other guy. Bad interview ( an opinion he has emphatically disproved since idol ) or not, David didn’t need the title to prove what his fans have known and continue to know all season long; that David Archuleta is a lovely, lovable, humble, well brought up young man who sings like an angel.
I don’t profess to any spiritual or religious moments when I hear him sing. To me he’s just David who touches my heart in such unexpected ways whenever that sublime voice soars through the air. That he is the amazing young man that he is character wise is just icing on the cake. The only strong urge that I do feel about David is the urge to protect him from the wolves out there who perhaps seeing how huge is his following will callously mold him into a money making machine just to milk every dollar out of him. I really hope the people around him will treat this young man with the utmost dignity and integrity and let him express his musical soul in the best possible way. It will be an absolute tragedy if David ever becomes so disillusioned that he withdraws into himself never to sing again.
hello gorgeous adn musicao, you both really summed up alow of my own feelings about David and our passionate feelings for him. I have to admit, I felt a little ‘disciplined’, Rascal, by this post!! We have all just gone so mad for this kid!! It is really wonderful to see how deeply he has moved so many, and how he has inspired us all to want to express those feelings. Using poetry, Scripture, dharma etc. gives is the words we may not be able to formulate on our own. (well, Rascal can put thoughts and feelings into words quite well all on his own…)! I thank all of you for being open and sharing so much! I don’t think anybody is trying to make David into our ‘prophet’, it is just so hard to put into words how deeply he moves us. At times, I guess we tend to go over the top just trying to express this depth of feeling.
In light of that, i have wondered, what exactly would I say to David if I ever got the chance to meet him? I realized, that I would have a very difficult time expressing to him anything that would describe the depth of feeling I have for him. It would be really creepy to have some middle aged woman gushing and crying because she is meeting you, wouldn’t it? I probably wouldn’t be able to get much past a sincere thank you, you have an amazing talent, I have been so moved by your singing…I mean, what else could one say in 30 secs.? I think it would be an odd encounter, somewhat surreal. I decided that, being an artist, if I ever did have a chance to meet him, I would create a piece for him, and give it to him. It would be the only way I could share how much he has inspired me without coming across as a ‘freaky old lady’. I’m sure he encounters enough of them.
So, David, if you ever read these posts, we mean you no harm! You’ve just got us all worked up, and we can’t talk to any of our friends and family about it because they will have us institutionalized! So we come here, to our family of kindred spirits, to Rascal’s blog, to share and feel at home with our mutual love and respect for you. You’re da bomb, baby!
elannbo and all: Yes, it is difficult to find the words to expess how we feel about David. But it’s sure fun to try! I think that is what we are all doing – trying – and why we sometimes turn to other sources to express what we feel.
So far, Lightworker and Spiritual Heartthrob (thanks scriptype!) are my favorite. And I don’t think David would be put off by either of those designations.
#28 Hello Gorgeous,
Thank you– very well written! Those were some of my favorite moments too. I came into the season a little later, so I’m jealous of all of you who were there from the beginning. I had to go back to youtube and catch up, but the magic of “Heaven” and “Imagine” shine through even there.
Rascal, thank you for the reality check. I was getting a little uncomfortable at all the expectations being placed on this kid, but as one person said, as long as we’re not expecting anything more than what he’s already been doing, it will be okay. I think part of the problem is that we haven’t had those weekly performances we’ve gotten used to, so we’re like addicts suffering from withdrawl. I wish he could put out some small fan “thank you” video or something, just to tide us over (maybe every Tues. and Wed. night?). Ha!
David Archuleta just makes me happy.
Hello gorgeous-I am glad to see that there are African Americans who like David. I have to admit after his performance of “With You” I didn’t think he had any support from African Americans. On youtube there was so many negative comments about him doing that song. I didn’t think he did bad on the song but I thought he was a little behind the music when he started and then worked it out towards the end. I beleive if he had of had more time to practice it he would have nailed it. I was like Paula on this one(a total shocker for me) he should be singing this type of music to he has the voice to do it, he just needed more practice. We were all use to him singing such slow songs that it seemed strange. He had 3 songs to learn that week and With You was a lot faster and harder to learn I guess. Oh and I saw that interview with Alexandrea it was so hilarious when he said that about Randy!! He said the first thing that popped into his head.
Reading all the comments on this site, gives you hope, love, faith, joy, peace, and inspiration. What a blessing to have David in our lives! Thank You, Archie.
I think everyone here is so great. I have never, ever written anything online ever about anything. But this ability David has to lose himself to his art form is amazing and is worth contemplation. When he sings I don’t really see him, I hear what music IS. Fun, laughable, happy, serious, altering, exciting, fluid, healing, sad, connecting, ever changing and so much more. I don’t think this is something he does on purpose, but is at the core of who he is. It is a very rare find, especially for someone his age. It was foreign to me at first, those types of singers are few and far between. Upon further reflection I realize what an amazing talent this young man has, to let me not necessarily see him the artist, but his artistry. Whether it’s bubble gum or brotherhood, I hope to admire it and marvel at it for a long time.
Thanks Rascal – north star that you are
EVERYONE PLEASE GO TO http://WWW.BUDDYTV.COM AND LEAVE AND COMMENT TO THE WRITER OF THAT ARTICLE. HE IS BRAGGING ABOUT DAVID COOK SINGING THE ANTHEM AND HOW DAVID A IF HE SANG IT WOULD ADD UNNESSARY RUNS AND MAKE IT CHEESEY. HE NEEDS TO DO IS RESEARCH BEFORE HE BASHES SOMEONE. DAVID ALREADY SANG THE AMERICAN ANTHEM AT HIS HOMECOMING. IT MUST BE EMBARASSING WRITING AN ARTICLE AND NOT EVEN HAVE YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. PLEASE GO AND WRITE YOUR OPINION. COOK WON THEY NEED TO LAY OFF ARCHIE! DAVID SANG IT HIS WAY AND STAYED RESPECTFUL AND SHOWED TASTE WHILE PERFORMING THE ANTHEM. THIS WRITER SAID COOK WOULD CHANGE IT UP AND MAKE IT DIFFERENT. I’M SORRY BUT THEIR ARE SOME SONGS THAT SHOULD NOT BE MADE INTO A ROCK SONG. I PREFER MY ANTHEM DONE WITH RESPECT AND NOT SCREAMED AT ME.
To Joymus, #30, here’s the link. I should have included it before, sorry. It was recorded before they got word of the “Thank You” concert’s cancellation, so it’s a little sad to hear of such good intentions that didn’t work out as planned. Great posts here, people. Love this blog!
http://www.sendspace.com/file/u1icoi
The exact link is http://www.buddytv.com/articles/american-idol/david-cook-to-sing-national-an-20296.aspx if anyone wants to read it.
It is ok that Cook is going to sing it he was the winner after all, but why does the media continue to rub it in and bash David? He performed it beautiful.
Inspired by David, am I really in the minority here, in terms of representing the African American fanbase for Archie? I hope not. At least publicly, Jennifer Hudson rooted for him, Randy always seemed behind him, and on Ellen’s show, the comedian Wanda Sykes called him “magical.” Obviously, some of us get it!
I thought he was super cute in his awkward hip-shaking (hee hee) trying to channel Chris Brown on “With You.” I have not looked at the youtube comments about this performance, but from what it sounds like, they were probably just comparing David to Chris Brown, who is two years older and a hot young cool dancer. Of course, Archie would not measure up to that. And since I heard white people making similar negative comments, I doubt it was mostly African Americans panning him on youtube.
Anyway, I learned from a fanblast chat with David’s cousin Vanessa last night, that our little Archie has been holding back on us this season (due to his shy personality). She swears up and down that David can do the harlem shake dance – that’s a specific hip-hop dance (heh – I would give my eye tooth to see that some day), once he really opens up. So, I imagine, after getting really comfortable on stage (which I’m sure the upcoming Idol tour will help) and performing before millions on a regular basis, David in time will get there and give the Chris Browns and Justin Timberlakes of the world a run for their money. Not that he needs to dance since singing is what he’s about, but I’m sure this is something he can nail with practice.
Besides, just so you know, those of us who are African American and who like David often tend to claim him as a person of color (since his mother is Latina) so I don’t see him having a problem appealing to different groups across the board.
Thanks to the person who directed us to check out the “Jazzman Chat” link on the Fanblast site (where David’s dad aka Jazzman participated in their live chat)–some cool background on some of the AI song choices. He asked if David’s version of “Nature Boy” was on youtube (as it’s one of his favourites of David’s). It is (here’s the link below), and all I can say is “Wow!” Previous to AI this year, I listened almost exclusively to jazz (my faves are Stacey Kent and Karrin Allyson) and I could always hear hints of both jazz & soul in David’s songs. I always loved Nat King Cole’s rendition of Nature Boy, but David’s (at age 12!) is so mature and soulful, it gives me chills. Check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYMKcyJcISE
hey guys, just roll the tape, there’s no question David’s got rythym. As you say, hello gorgeous, it’s just the shyness at times that undermines his confidence.
Race has nothing to do with anyone’s appreciation of David’s amazing talent. This is a truth about music in general; the universal language for our brotherhood of man.
inspired by David- I don’t even want to read that article. I read alot of the stuff on sirlinksalot during the season, and was appalled by the manhandling David suffered at the hands of those insipid people. That guy on Buddy TV went on and on all season about David doing too many runs, and what a horrible singer he is, blah, blah, blah… I can’t change their view, and David will always have his detractors. I decided that it was just too painful for me to keep immersing myself in their garbage! So I don’t go there anymore. In fact, if I begin reading an article about David, and it takes a turn toward bashing, I just stop reading and move on. I come over here, or to fanblast and dive into the positive! Life is too short to give those snarky folk any of my time or attention, anyway. I’d rather spend my time giving positive energy to David, and remaining joyful by surrounding myself with the wonderful energy of this site and the people here. It seems to me, that what we choose to focus our energy on becomes most powerful in our lives. Look at what David has started, just by focusing on what he loves, and sharing it with others! What we resist, persists…let that Buddy TV guy wallow in his negativity, but you don’t have to go there with him! Peace is precious.
I just thought of something else- Whatever or however David Cook does w/his career has nothing to do w/Archie. They were involved in a competition that is over now. I was thinking yesterday just how long ago it seems that AI happened! I was so wrapped up in wanting David to win, voting, etc.. Rascal had it right to begin with! It doesn’t matter a whit that he didn’t win. Obviously, David got that a long time ago! He and Cook have separate lives and careers that will never be related to each other outside of the AI bubble. Let Cook’s fans have him and bask in hiw title all they want! Who cares? I’m only interested in what David does from here on out, anyway. I doubt I’ll think about Cook unless I hear him on the radio or something. He doesn’t have to do poorly in order for our David to succeed. David will succeed on his own terms, and all the Cookies in the world are powerless to stop him!
musicao, I think that’s really the point I’m making about race – if people want to “claim” David, as white or Latino or whatever, it’s because he has already transcended race and is so universally appealing, people want to readily identify with him.
As for media bashing, some people are just incapable of recognizing greatness or looking past the facade. Too many people don’t want to look past the cute adorable face to see a genuinely sweet, real, and passionate individual who sings marvellously. Their resistance to the sweet seduction David’s voice offers speaks more about their level of cynicism than it does about David’s appeal.
Ok, one more thought, then I really do have to get to work!
Mother Theresa said, when asked to join an anti-war movement, that she would not. She said ask me to join a pro-peace movement, and I’m with you!
Energy flows where attention goes. Be careful what you think about.
Ooh, nice quote from Mother Theresa, elannbo!
Rascal, have I told you lately that I think you’re terrific?
David seems to inspire passion and joy in us — for whatever the reasons.
You inspire thoughtful discussion from us — for whatever the reasons.
Rascal, thank you so very much. What a talent you have to observe and interpret those observations into definitive, unbiased descriptions.
What you wrote above was absolutely perfect.
Thank you again.
Love all the comments, thanks again to all who share so many insights and experiences. And WOW doesn’t begin to express my (continued) amazement over that voice–special thanks for the “Nature Boy” tip, I just had a listen and **OMG**. David, David, David, you are just inexpressibly divine!! I’m sure that, in time, you’ll get used to our preposterous boundless unending gushing. And in the meantime, forgive us!!!
I’ve always been fascinated by young musical talents and when I chanced upon AI’s run of the audition, Hollywood week, and the performance night of the top 24, I just can’t help noticing David standing out among them, making me think that there is something special about this kid that sets him apart and makes him sing the way he does. The thrill of discovering for myself who this kid is, his music, kept me glued to AI week after week. What I came to discover was an appreciation, not only for his immense musical talent (his beautiful, pure voice and his meaningful, heartfelt rendition of each song) but equally of his beautiful character which proved consistently strong, authentic, and resilient in the midst of the unrelenting pressure of the competition as well as the unkind reviews thrown his way by the media. And to think he is only 17.
Thank you, Rascal, for this interesting and insightful blog. This indeed is worthwhile reading. You put into words what someone like me can’t seem to articulate about David and his music. I also enjoy reading the comments posted here, so I thought of posting mine, too. Your site has been a regular online destination for me since I stumbled upon it a week to the run-up to the AI finale. Please keep this up!
Thank you, David, for touching us with your music! Thank you, Mr and Mrs Archuleta, for raising a young man like David and for allowing him to generously share his heart and his musical gift to us. More power!
I’m enjoying this post, putting our appreciation of David in perspective. Touching the intangible is only possible with the heart, not the hands. It’s impossible for another person to feel the same thing. Our bodies are like prisons which keep us apart. Until we hear a bird sing, a baby babble, or a voice in song….
Let me put the idea of ‘fanaticism’ in its place. Archuleta’s fans are not fanatics who blindly follow an idol; we are all very keenly aware of who inspires us and why we are his fans. The fanatics are those who created a singing contest with a format & rules designed to find only the most popular, not the best, singer. Fanatics are “judges” and producers who turned themselves so easily into advocates for a contestant and were willing and able to use the media and corporate power to sway public opinion. Fanatics are media personalities, like “he who shall not be named”, who exploit others for their own ego. Fanatics are the corporate interests who feast on power and profit.
Our joyful enthusiasm for David and his voice is strong enough to subdue these fanatics. Though we may sometimes feel apprehension for young David as he faces these ‘Goliaths’, let’s remember who won in that Biblical contest. From that David’s perspective, Goliath was no giant but a mere miserable mortal trapped in his thought of himself as a giant.
Thank you so much Rascal again, for putting in words just how we feel about David. That picture is just beautiful of him. He truly shows his light all around him and it’s just amazing how God is using him to inspire people through David’s beautiful voice. When David sings, all of us feel something very deeply. I truly believe it’s because David’s spirit is so close to God and his purity and angelic nature just shows when he sings. He just melts the worlds problems away for me. I really believe that we are witnessing an amazing happening right before our eyes. I am blessed because of him.
Thank you David!!!
Rascal, thank you for bringing up this topic and addressing it as you did. I second your sentiments. I’ve been a bit bothered of late by the overly-fulsome remarks made about our dear David. He is a remarkable young man with unbelievable talent and a strong, inspiring spirit, but he is not perfect. No one is in this life.
We all have clay feet, and I think it’s wise to remember that fact. David will make mistakes as we all do in the course of this life. If we try to place a mantle of perfection on his shoulders, he will of necessity disappoint us. If we look to him for inspiration, if we try to model the outstanding qualities that he possesses which motivate and encourage us to up our game, then all will end well for everyone concerned.
David has been a blessing to me in regards to the issues discussed here. He has been such an outstanding example of integrity, kindness and goodwill that when I’ve been inclined to slip myself and be less than I should be, I’ve found myself stepping back, reevaluating and taking the higher road. God bless young David for what he’s shown me and others. Let’s look to him for inspiration, not perfection.
#28 ~ Hello Gorgeous ~ You don’t know me, but, um, may I hug you? That was food for my soul– the whole thing! Thank you so much for that! Delicious!
I believe if we took a poll that there would not be one of us who believes David is perfect or that he IS the supreme source rather than just someone who can channel it consistently. In fact, Jeff told us all this just the other night.
The reason I like this blog, is that despite our dramatic gushing over David, I don’t feel that anyone here thinks David is more than just a young man with a stellar character and a huge gift to inspire and touch us with his music and his remarkable talent. All of us at times have the ability to channel the divine; David is no exception. But he is first and foremost a 17 year old teenager.
In the course of his career, I am sure that David will make mistakes. Just to go way out on a limb, what if his first CD is bland and he starts dating Miley Cyrus? Scriptype, in your analysis of ‘fanatics’ you forgot that there are some fans who feel they own a bit of David who would abandon him at the first disappointment of not doing something the way they think he should. Remember prom-gate?
We do invest a lot of energy and hope in David and what he has to offer. I think he is up to the challenge in this particular arena. If it seems over the top, so be it. But the way he makes us feel when he sings is over the top, too. Such emotions deserve a little gushing.
Awwww, beebee. Thanks! And right back at you. (((Hugs)))
Those of you who have raised the issue of media bashing and, in particular, Simon Cowell’s mean-spirited comments about David right before the finale, it dawned on me that David really is a genuine source of light. Because only such “starchild/lightworker/artists” would be so threatening to the forces of darkness that American Idol’s corporate adventure represents.
By “forces of darkness,” I’m not referring to Satan’s demonic minions of course. I am, however, referring to everything the franchise represents – mediocrity, flash-in-the-pan sensationalism, superficiality – which gets undermined by artists like David Archuleta. I get the overwhelming impression that, had Archie simply managed to be a cute, adorable Jonas-Brothers-clone that later morphed into a Justin Timberlake-type hearthrob later in the season, the producers would have rallied behind him and pushed him for the win. He didn’t play his prescribed role the way they wanted, so Cook – being clever and entertaining – provided them with an alternative.
That’s what they’re all about: artifice. They honestly don’t care about talent unless they can see how clearly it will make them quick cash. Dark Forces, I tell you!
And they have no real investment in nurturing their contestants either – during or after the show. Not that they have the intellligence or the musical savvy to do this anyway but I’m just saying. That both Simon and Nigel remain convinced that David has no “charisma” or “personality” clearly shows what incompetents they are when it comes to scouting new talent. Surely 97 millions votes on finale night indicate that members of the viewing public recognized personalities to even be bothered.
Oh, oh, oh. and wow, wow, wow….. okay somebody must have been praying or something for me when I made a comment about going to find a life…well I found it so much that I missed all of this.
musicao – are we channeling each other or what?….your comments on #23 and #24, oh well all of your comments on this thread.. right on, as I was reading the thread from the previous post (122, wow, rascal, wondering if we are taking over your blog? not to worry, none of us can say anything half as well as you, you keep us all on track), and then I got to Rascals answer to elannbo’s question to #113 and I was going to try to write those same things you have said, and there I saw you had beat me to it (I guess it wasn’t hard to, life was doing the same thing to me). Anyway, I just have to say some things to some comments, whew, I got my work cut out for me, here goes:
sharonbryan, welcome and thank you for sharing your personal experiences about dealing with ODD in your life, I can relate and feel so much more at home everytime I read an experience like yours.
elannbo – I’m in, anytime, you just tell me when and I’ll be on that train, or pogosticks, or whatevaah, oh and I love, love your comment at #121 ‘jousting at windmills’, the picture that brings to mind……..
janey – your comment at #109 about our respect for one another transcending our differences should speak volumes to all of us here gathered because of our mutual sharing of our love for one awesome young man. your labeling us “brotherhood of fans” is so very accurate, and thank you archu adorable for first suggesting us as a ‘brotherhood’, as gracie said at #67 ‘were dreamers, but were not the only ones….’
daisychain – ‘be not afraid of their faces’, ROTFL, that is all I have to say about that, as Forrest would say, it took me two hours to read through all the comments I missed and yours took the longest because I couldn’t read through my tears of laughter. – thanks : ))). oh, by the way, in case you didn’t know, Tinuviel is for Luthien Tinuviel from LOTR. Your son probably knows all about her and how she sang a song of enchantment over Morgoth that allowed her and Beren to steal back the silmaril and earned Beren her hand in marriage. Also, I loved your comment at #114 ‘be a light and not just another shadow’ – I think that is all the ‘burden’, if you call it that, any of us here have placed on David – I really don’t think any other was anyone’s intention. We have seen his light and we want to believe that it is for real and not just another shadow – at least that is what I meant when I said “David show us it is possible”.
collegemom – I haven’t seen your comments before, so I say hello and welcome, thank you, thank you, thank you, for sharing that about the SonicEther remix, as I suggested before I think this would be a definite include on David’s CD.
bigsky – I bet that Tedder news had you smiling all weekend! I didn’t know that about Ryan Tedder, thank you for sharing, it certainly gives me a new perspective on him. I had made a comment about Tedder hogging to much of the song, I have listened to it many times since then and have to admit my ODD was speaking when I made that comment. The way they both sang the song together was perfect harmony. On that note, I have to say, I listened to the Hero song that both Davids sang on the results night, and I read a comment by someone that I completely agreed with after I listened to it again, (and again, and again, you get the picture) which said that the producers would be smart to include that on Cook’s CD, because Cook had the edginess to do the lead, and little David’s harmonizing vocals added so much to the song, it was much better than the Nickelback version and this person thought it would be a sure hit.
I love this place, I love sharing with all of you in, as musicao so eloquently said, ‘this universal language for our brotherhood of man’
Thank you Rascal for providing your thoughts and this place for us to “come together” (another song David could cover, musicao?)
#57 archu_adorable: What was prom-gate?
Archu-adorable, we might as well brace ourselves for anything since our young people who achieve success early get carried away all too easily. Not to mention that Miley Cyrus has already verbally expressed interest in dating David, so, all I have to say to our boy is…
Watch out, David! Or, as Britney would say, everyone’s going to want a piece of you.
But, at least it would be better to be with Miley than, say, Lindsay Lohan, or even one of the Olsen twins.
Let’s keep the faith, all the same, as we’ve seen Archie has real strength of character that doesn’t easily crumble, even in the face of corruption that is Hollywood.
okay, hello gorgeous, so very well said too, you were writing while I was….. : ). we really are of all the same mind when it comes to David. We are all adults fully aware of what exactly draws us all together, not what pulls us apart as humans elsewhere. As David pointed out “we’re the voice, try and understand now.” He may be just a boy who loves to sing, but he is a boy who loves to sing a song with a message for all who are listening to respond to. and we are all trying to do that.
I do believe that David will continue to make the same quality personal decisions as he has been making. He chose Eva Cassidy as would be mentor and as the person he would most like to duet with. Those kinds of choices say a lot about him and hint at the future choices he will make for himself in his personal and his professional life. I don’t think we need be worried about him choosing Miley, Lindsey, or the Olsen twins, none of which share his level of talent or personality. much less his obvious faith and morality.
True, Tinuviel. David goes deep and I don’t see him getting serious with anyone who’s superficial – personally or professionally.
#46ellanbo, definitely I’m with you, my interest is all about David. Since day 1 i met David I have no concern with the other AI finalists. David will succeed on his own terms and so with the other finalists. They can say what they want, but one thing for their awareness David made history on AI, that none of the other finalists achieved. Indeed, no other fans and/or detractors can stop our David. His gift is unreacheable, as the song goes…”The unreacheable STAR.” O’-)
hello gorgeous – I totally agree with all of your comments (too many to list haha).Another great entry from Rascal and great comments from everyone! You know, you guys are starting to make me feel guilty that I can’t write so vividly. It’s almost poetic haha. What never ceases to amaze me about David is how much he’s like me – humble, sincere, conscientious, giddy. Man, he could be my brother! Okay, so there’s like 14 years difference. It could happen! haha I really don’t want to put him on a pedistal. I’d never do that to a brother or really anyone. I think I said enough before I start to embarass myself. I need to watch my ODD!
Over the past couple of weeks I keep mentally comparing David’s mass appeal to the iconic “Everyman” performers of the 20th century. They were amazing artists in their mediums, loveable yet awkward, naive yet strong, able to reveal their vulnerabilities through an egoless personality, and lived their life with the courage of their convictions. So, for me, some insight into my ODD for a 17 year old kid who loves to sing songs with a message, I realized that it was the “Everyman” quality that I am admiring. My ODD has been a puzzle for me to solve and I am finding more and more answers as I read through everyone’s comments. Thanks!
Rascal,
Thank you for the picture you chose for this comment thread. It reminds me of the power of spirit (and possibly a good name for David’s first CD – The Power of Spirit.)
You stated in your commentary that it “would be helpful in the course of discussion to confine the scope of our language to personal experience.” You also started the piece with a powerful statement – “Profound experience is a communion with the divine.” I have discovered through reading the writings of Dean Kaelin (David’s voice coach) and my own personal experience how truly accurate these statements are.
Mr. Kaelin, who is no stranger to the world of music and the voice, constantly comments on how amazed he was coaching David through his Idol experience. I assume that this is also the same kind of impact that you often comment on. What I take away from David’s singing, as so many people have said, is how emotional it make me, which I attribute to my connection to things spiritual. Emotion is a direct connection to the heart and to the spirit. No matter how many times I have heard a particular song he has sung, and I have my favorites, I am surprised how some still take my breath away and bring unexpected tears to my eyes (and I am 53 years old, not prone to being an emotional person.)
Many may not see or agree with me about my last comment, but I would like to draw attention to what I see as a fundamental change in the psyche of the world we live in. There is so much interest in finding something positive in a world that has become so negative. From the different fan sites that support David, I notice a real desire for a community of like-minded (possibly very spiritually connected) people that are willing to share a common experience; in this case, their love for David. It is astonishing how powerful the connection has grown around the talents and abilities this young man (angel). In a strange twist of contemplation, it reminds me of the change that is occuring with the American political scene these days. In both politics and music, it is the connectivity of the internet that allows perfect strangers to experience a change in the world, and hopefully of the spirit.
I really eagerly await the music that David will offer the world, hopefully later this year.
Ok guys, I wrote to Oprah, again! Today, I told her about this group of old farts suffering from O.D.D., who were overjoyed to find Rascal’s pad, a hip, soulful kind of place where they finally felt safe enough to come out of the closet and cop to their addiction! It’s a wonderful, heartfelt and spiritual place, Oprah! Join is anytime, and we’ll tell you everything you didn’t know that you needed to know about the Starchild, Lightworker and Artist that brought us all together here! His name is David Archuleta, and boy oh boy, do you ever need to get him on your stage!
Or something to that effect. I do try to be persuasive, at least. Oh yeah. This time I told her that we would explore a swimmable route to Chicago, just to have the opportunity to meet and thank David, and of course, give him a spectacular gift
You know what they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I plan to keep on squeakin’!
#69 ellanbo – thank you thank you, a little mini concert. I am imaging in my head. Please include me. And you know what I would say to David if I ever got the chance? It would be just THANK YOU but with tears in my eyes.
I find this the only website that’s worth risking getting spam and viruses for. Does that make sense? It’s a joke, I like to laugh a lot.
#28 hello-gorgeous: I LOVED your post… I, too, laughed my hiney off when David said he didn’t have the “black skills”, and then topped that with the “Utah” comment. How much more genuine could he have been.. and without one person in that room feeling that he was being derogatory. But the ULTIMATE hilarity to come from David was when he was talking about how Amanda was “scary” and that she could “kill you”.. LOL! I didn’t care much for David Cook until I watched the interview with the two of them, and I’m sure Amanda didn’t feel insulted when David told her she was scary….
#29 – Tell Grandma she’s spot on — people like David only come around once in a generation. I bet if we all stop and think about singers who made an extraordinary impact on people, we’d have just a handful — who are all completely unforgettable.
Would be fun to try to list those “once in a generation” singers here… Frank Sinatra’s been mentioned… I have one: Judy Garland. I also think Eva Cassidy has become a legend now as well.
inspired by david- I hope I didn’t seemuncaring when I commented on your plea to write to the Buddy TV guy re. his usual Archie bash. I totally understand how frustrated and even hurt you may feel when reading something like that, and want to say something to shut the guy up!! I really get it, because I spent a lot of energy getting upset by that stuff during AI. I’m just choosing to not react now. If that changes, I will help you by writing to these tasteless idiots…I just don’t know what good it will serve though. Thanks for letting us know that they still haven’t let go!
HI EVERYONE!!!!! Hugs and kisses to all. I have much to say but havent enough time before the new posts are up for reading. You guys truly ROCK! we are such a mixed bag of people with a strong common interest – David James Archuleta. Lets keep with the positive and open-mindedness about the negative stuff.
Rascal, you are fast becoming a celebrity blogger. The number of posts has been growing for each thread. Thanks for maintaining this site for us. But I gotta say this, once the tour comes and the album drops, you are gonna be busy – we depend on you!
Okay, I have to go for now. But I’ll be back and hopefully post some thoughts….not that they matter because you guys have already said so much.
hello gorgeous- Thanks for responding to my comment. I don’t know as far as the comments on YouTube what type of people that left the bad comments. I am just glad that he is liked by many different people. I didn’t know either about some of the other stars that liked him, thanks for filling me in on that. The Chris Brown song “With You” I was glad when I heard he was going to sing it. Something young and a song everyone knows. At the start of the song he was a little behind the music and then worked it out towards the end. I really believe if he had of had more time to practice that song that he would have nailed it. Paula said she thought he should sing that type of music( and for once I agreed with her) we were just not use to seeing him sing faster songs so it seemed strange. He does have the voice to do it though. He just needed more practice time. They had to learn 3 songs that week and I believe that was the week he said he already knew what he was going to sing and then when he found out about him having to sing 2 slow songs he wanted to sing something faster. I watched him every week and I could tell by looking on his face if he was nervous or not and it would be tough to go out and sing a different type of song than people are use to you doing, and knowing probably from the start that the judges would not like it. He said they never liked it when he did faster songs. It took a lot of nerve to go on stage and sing anyway.
I really like reading your comments. You seem like such a sweet person. Thanks.
hey bigsky, you could probably add Perry Como and Bing Crosby to the Sinatra list as far as i’m concerned. Wounderful post ass always Rascal thank you, Articulate as ever as is most everyone with there comments here.
Hey Gang,
If you stay off this site for more than a few hours you’re ancient history, left behind in the dust. Today in a meeting, rocking my knees impatiently, I nearly smacked my fist on the table and blurted out, “Don’t you understand that I have to get back to “Noting David”?! Hmm maybe I should get a leave of absence for stress so I can respond all day …but then my wife would want me to rebuild the deck and how would I type with a hammer in my hand?….Hmm life’s little challenges.
Hello gorgeous 47 I definitely felt you on that point in 42 but I have this little tendency to blurt things out when others spur my thoughts as you did. I think sometimes I come out as brash,…Of course if I hadn’t sounded a little bit the lecturer we may not have gotten your succinct comment on David’s appeal transcending race – that was the bow on the package!
Hey all – just want to say there’s so much good accomplished here by everyone! Elannbo keep up the Oprah campaign- it will happen!. Tofan thanks loads for the “Nature Boy” link – killer at that age! Of course I know you’re just hearing him do so many standards in your head –and may I say also as any Torontonian would, “it’s not the heat it’s the humidity” (to others: we’ve had 100% humidity here which sort of means you bring two extra shirts to work each day)
Tinuviel our common thought patterns must be the result of having spent so much time among the good folk of Lorien and Mirkwood. Either that or long hours spent in the counsel of Gandalf over many bowls of Long Bottom Leaf. (LOTR stuff to you non -ringers.) Yes! “Come Together” and too many other Beatles songs but I gotta hold myself back, the poor kid wants to do contemporary music. But speaking of LOTR I never thought I’d say this but I I’ve been imagining David reworking Zeppelin’s “Over the Hills and Far Away” Now hold on, consider that beautiful tune and consider that beautiful voice finding other notes within the notes and you’ll find what I’m hearing. David’s higher range (but not falsetto) would lend something totally magical to this tune.(
I’m happy to say this is one of the oldies that never got old.) I know, let him be, he wants to sing contemporary music…
One last LOTR ref for Tinuviel In 73 on “..the Archulator” thread, I confessed to my LOTR obsession and it’s link to ODD (personally) It was sort of directed at you and anyone else who felt any kind of connection there.
I should probably add 2 others to the list as well Fred Astaire and the one that is said to have influenced everyone listed Sinatra, Crosby, Garland, none other then Al Jolson
Rascal, thinking about my own experience and “our own pre-existing heart conditions being opened” got me to thinking about my son. I always thought of him as a “tin bum”. That’s an Australian term for someone born under a lucky star. He’s generally a nice guy and people respond to him in a positive way. Within the first few minutes of his birth he looked up at me as if to say, “I’m complete. Don’t ever try to tell me what to do. Stay back and watch”. That was 29 years ago. I never forgot that “conversation” and in spite of my young age I was confident enough to follow his request. The only other time I’ve felt this message, this strongly, was meeting DJ on AI. So Rascal, you got me to thinking, maybe some of this has something to do with me. I feel honored to be able to “see” this phenomenon in others. I hope others on this site give themselves credit as well.
Regarding DJ’s dancing capabilities, remember “Shop Around”? I thought he moved beautifully during that performance. On FanBlast the other night Jazzman spoke about David needing to feel the music, how that changed from the taped performances, top 24 through top 12. He specifically chose songs without a strong beat when they took away the in ear monitors because he couldn’t hear or feel what he needed to. I can’t help but think that’s why he was behind the music in “With You”. Knowing he had to overcome these issues makes his performances all the more spectacular. Makes me wonder what could have been.
Welcome new posters and welcome back to those that have been away. There’s always something to learn from everyone here. I enjoy you all so much.
janey I’m with you on this, I shake my head in wonder at the sheer number of obstacles he faced and surmounted. When David speaks of how hard he worked I believe he surprised himself; that he was able to live up to such a huge challenge.
Little errors aside, David’s performances are all keepers. (personally I think he should stay away fom Neil Diamond material but that’s because I’m not a fan) There’s always something to draw you in, including the ones that people knock. “With you” was so cool to see – David really should do more like it.
Must say that “And so it goes” has really grown on me. Moments of intense chills.
Here’s a challenge for David -please take a long look at Bob Marley – the challenge being to work the lyric back into American English – but I’m certain that the incredibly rich catalogue of that great master’s work holds some David Archuleta re-workings that will melt us like butter and send the chill factor off the scale
1 more post for this west coast boy before I head off into the night. I love this insigtful site for us all to come and commune. I’ve noticed Eva Cassidy brought up numerous times. There is one song Eva did that I thought was absolutely, breathtakingly amazing, and that was her rendetion of Cyndi Lauper’s Time after Time. I would love to hear Davids take on that song, of the thousand of songs I could name that would have to be at the top right above Bob Seger’s Like a Rock.
Wow. Bravo to all these amazingly insightful posts. rascal certainly knows how to light up our emotions doesn’t he?
rascal’s words -David’s voice = food for my soul.
elannbo – email ms. winfrey this am. the more squeaky wheels the more oil, right?
I am in love with Eva Cassidy’s music because of David.
Rascal, thank you so much! It’s really an honor!
Inspired by David, I like how you can “read” my sweet personality on here (smile). Tell me this isn’t a clear indication that most of us here can penetrate through all our mediated screens and sense the real picture (as we all have with David Archuleta).
I love this site, actually! Rascal always gives me something new to think about, and the commenters here take it to the next level.
This whole conversation about Archie’s throwback potential to the 20th century masters (Sinatra, Garland, Barbra Streisand, Bob Marley – and let me add some more late 20th C. examples, like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Elton John) is a reminder of what has been so sorely lacking among today’s artists (and let us hope that David can bring back this quality! Let’s hope Jive is savvy enough to bring out this quality!).
The masters of old had individuality; they had definable character. They were allowed to be themselves. They were allowed to be “eccentric.” Today’s “masters” are so generic and such obvious carbon copies of 20th c. originals, that they don’t inspire. It is no wonder then that paparazzi has decided to focus instead on the behind-the-scenes dirt of so many celebrities, to expose the “man behind the curtain” as it were, since we are less than awed by the big wizardry production itself.
Something else about David Archuleta being a reminder of the old masters. He, like they, were truly organic, and in an era when everything is so elaborately manufactured and engineered (INCLUDING OUR FOOD AND WATER!!) no wonder the general American public would resist the real thing for some artificial construction since our very diets have been developed to reject what’s natural.
How many times have I heard Archie critics get on him for not being a “performer,” or for appearing vulnerable rather than be a poser? How many times have I heard AI watchers argue the merits of a contestant based on whether or not they can produce a record that goes “platinum” rather than whether or not they recognize the greatness of the contestant’s talent? These are the same watchers who have let Simon Cowell (who, if you listen closely, is truly clueless about musical talent but very sharp about what drives the music market) influence their views that anyone who winds up on “Broadway” is a musical failure?
And it’s for these very reasons why, despite the show allowing me to discover the David Archuletas and Melinda Doolittles of the world, I think the show does more damage than good since they have shaped the way Americans in general define talent and greatness.
That more people voted for David Cook over David Archuleta, that more people last year chose Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks over Melinda Doolittle is a continuous reminder that, yes, we as a nation, will choose the Big Mac over the steak vignon. And not simply because we don’t have higly developed taste but because it’s a constant diet that has been fed to us.
The more record labels push out real eccentric and unique talents for the flashier acts, the more this poor diet will be fed to us. Had David not had the good looks and the youth, he himself may not have made it to the finale.
I really hope Jive sees the potential for greatness in David and not just a “he’s the next Justin Timberlake or Josh Groban” or what have you. He’s none of those people. He’s David Archuleta! I’ve been disgusted with the music industry for their downright laziness in thinking out the box when it comes to creating a superstar from scratch who is like no other.
I would like Jive to recognize that they have nobody else to compare David to, so they might as well work with what they have and craft him into the bonafide success he will surely be. Their task is simple: how to make David’s vocals shine and make his genuine sweet personality something that is cool. Which, in all honesty, with all the shameful and pathetic acts of the various pop stars of late, is not that hard to do.
hello gorgeous, beautifully said. David himself would agree. As he said on Larry King when asked, “who are you most like?”. He responded “no one”.
One of the many reasons I chose this site over the multitude of others geared for fans of the rising, shining star that is David Archuleta is the insightful, introspective, and articulate post of everyone here.
Another reason I’ve chosen this site, is it seems to consist of the older fans amoungst ourselves. Heck im a 45 year old Miltary Veteran with a minor degree in Electronic Engineering Technology, and I still feel half the time I need to brush up on my spelling, grammer, and punctuation, pull out the old dictionary just to keep up with everyone posting here.
It’s almost as if everyone here is a elder statesman/stateswoman.
#84 – gorgeous: Excellent points in everything you said and I dearly hope Jive records can understand them. I’m also going to post 2 verses out of Bob Seger’s Like a Rock hoping to all thats dear David uses them as his motto for his career.
My hands were steady,
my eyes were clear and bright
my walk had purpose,
my steps were quick and light
And I held firm,
to what I felt was right
Like a rock
And I stood arrow straight
unencumbered by the weight
of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud I stood tall
high above it all
I still believed in my dreams
Hello gorgeous! Double WOW!! I was asking my son and his friends the other dy why there hasn’t been very much good music for their generation? I mean, they listen to the music I grew up w/pretty much! You are absolutely right about packaging pop stars for platinums! I haven’t listened to much music in the last 10 yrs., frankly because there hasn’t been much worth the bother. My son has turned me on to some artists recently, so I guess there is hope. I agree, Jive has a ‘dandy’ in David Archuleta, let’s hope they don’t screw it up!
I have never been a big pop fan, listening to blues, jazz, mostly. I was commenting about David’s rare gifts on Chancelucky’s blog, and he wouldn’t believe me when I said I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and I love David Archuleta! I told him that talent is talent. David’s ability to move people w/his music is unprecedented, his voice is the most beautiful I have ever heard, and that one can appreciate all kinds of music, thank you very much! I told him that David is the first artist since my days spent following the Grateful Dead around in my VW bus, that I would fly, drive catch a bus, whatever it took, and travel far, far away, just to see him perform live! He thought I was making it up. I was ready to pack up my car and drive through the night if I could have gotten tickets to his benefit in Salt Lake. My son thought I had lost my mind!
This is another problem David faced on AI- the non-hip factor. Many people won’t really listen to him or give him a chance because of his ‘dork’ factor. It is not cool to like DA unless you are a tween or a grandma. I hope Jive doesn’t allow this narrow and unrealistic view dictate the type of music David records. To let this once in a lifetime singer slip through our fingers because of the ignorant culture we live in, (so well described by hello gorgeous!), would be, gosh! Are there words to describe how awful that would be?!
It astounds me that people don’t get it, him…I am going to look up and listen to his favorite artists, like many of you. I have probably missed out on a lot of good music because I hven’t known where to find it…Might as well let David be my guide.
Thanks for all of your thoughts! Thanks Rascal for doing this- I just love coming here!
#87 I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Eric Clapton, U2, now Eva Cassidy AND David Archuleta!!! You are not insane!! Great artists are great artists!
I love the comment when he said “No one” – so true!!!
Did anyone see the video of him behind the scene at Extra after the results? Totally getting his dance moves going (not overtly) but moving non the less in the make up chair. He can move!!
I can’t keep up with the conversation here, but I do read all of it and enjoy everyone’s perspective.
hello gorgeous, you remind me so much of ITTO, another lovely poster.
Gosh, I feel like a midget among the giants in here
. But I’ll try to crystalise my thoughts in writing so I hope I do alright.
Rascal, sometimes your deep thinking and writings stump me but thank you for this topic. I know my place. Because of my faith, I cannot “worship” David – it’s such a blurred line. If David has taken over God’s place in my heart and life, I’m guilty of it. It’s frightening to admit, at times, I was! I have to keeping checking myself……
As for David, he seems to know his calling – to be God’s instrument to reach out to people via his God-given voice and power of music. He has a mission to ministers hope, joy and faith. He feels embarassed and awkward at the level of “idol worshipping” thrown at him – as it should be for a person who is strongly grounded in God. For the moment, David knows his place too. But we are not perfect, neither is David. Being constantly “worshipped” and “idolised” by the public puts David in a fragile and vulnerable position. Temptations abound. Its not something we can brush aside since many established and strong Christian speakers and ministers have fallen prey to various types of temptations. So I sincerely pray for David to be strong at all times.
musicao, love your post! I laughed at the recognition of myself. I find that I work my schedule around to have time for this site and get extremely irritated when someone or something messes it up. I didn’t have time this morning to get on and what do I find when I do get on, tons of great posts from you, Janey, elannbo, milvet, hellogorgeous…..you guys are killing me trying to keep up, but that is why I love this site and also why we are all striving to make time for it. It has become essential to our ODD.
musicao – I missed your post on the Archulator thread about LOTR, I will definitely have to make time to go back and read it, maybe tonight about midnight, since I can’t get enough time just to keep up with the current thread! all things LOTR are the only thing that comes close to my ODD. When the movies came out, my nephews and my sons realized how much I knew about it and they would question me incessantly about this and that, but I loved that they were as caught up in the story as I was. Kind of like sharing on this site, we are all as caught up in DJA as each other. : ) Our little (not so little) Brotherhood of Fans!
Talk about diversity in each other and in our tastes in music! For myself, there is not any kind of music I do not like and listen to, with the exception of gansta rap. My favorites include BB King, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Nat King Cole, Billie Holliday, Simon & Garfunkel, Guns n Roses, Celine Dion, Luciano Pavarotti, a Christian rock band called Kutless, oh the list goes on and on. Hmmmm, looking at this list you might think I should have been a cookie fan, but one would have to know that I appreciate these artists for their passion and innovation they brought to the world of music and not neccessarily for their STYLE of music, which is exactly why I love DJA so much.
At first listen With You seemed awkward, probably for the very reasons stated in this thread, but it has become one of my favorites from him, I love the runs he does at the end ‘with you, with you, with you.’ I def see what you are talking about in Over the Hills and Far Away, musicao. I do believe, as I am sure everyone else here does, that is the nature of our ODD, that DJA could sing most standards and even most obscures and make them even better. As pointed out so well by Rascal, David has an inate sense of a song, picking out it’s tender moments and exposing them for all to see and understand. Where a song existed on one plane, David has the ability to elevate it to another. We could go on and on about which songs David should cover, but having listened to the songs David has written or co-written, we may find that David is far more interested in creating his own music that comes from his own heart than from someone else’s. David’s biggest contribution to music just might be the music that he writes.
Okay, it has taken me over an hour to write this, (since I keep getting interrupted, Grrrrr!), so I need to catch up on what others have posted since I started and according to musicao, that would mean I am ancient already……..
kccy, I am praying for him as well, because I not only want him to succeed in music, I want him to succeed in life. In fact, it is probably more important to me that he succeed in life than for him to succeed in music. For him to display his faith and remain faithful to it’s teachings and his own beliefs is paramount. Of course, I want the absolute best of both worlds for him, and I really believe that if anyone can do it, he can. If it came down to it and he had to choose between success in the music world or staying true to himself, I hope and pray he would choose the latter. Some have thought about what they would say to David if they had a chance. This is what I would tell him.
Hey everyone! I must admit that I was getting a little freaked out in the middle of that last thread, thanks tons for leaving out the politics!! LOVE the “tin bum” story…I think that is one of the things that has drawn me to admire David too. I am also a mother of remarkable kids. It is comforting to me to see there ARE wonderful young people out there.
I am purely a recreational music lover, but I really enjoy all your suggestions and musings! I am looking forward to researching these artists mentioned here & giving them another ‘listen’. RASCAL, you draw a great crowd! To quote someone ‘up the line’– Rascals’ writing+ David’s music= Happy Me!
Wow! I stayed away from the internet yesterday and look how much I’ve missed. I had to stay away since I spent 3 hours the day before reading the Jazzman (Jeff) chat posted in Fanblast.
I have to admit also that, like another poster, I also felt a little bit ‘disciplined’ and had to think twice about posting. Like someone before me said, a poll among us will reveal that we are not attempting to put David on a pedestal. He is David Archuleta and he inspired many to do better. Just for that, he is a champion.
Hellogorgeous, elannbo, and many others, I second your words. Beautifully said. Thank you.
And finally, I copied all of Jazzman’s posts from Fanblast just to give others the chance to read them. I feel many have already read them, but just in case, here they go: (wait, I had to delete a couple, since Rascal would probably ban me for posting such a long ´comment´LOL, but it’s too late to apologize):
Jazzman: Plz, I’ve become quite the softy over the past several months and it’s mostly because of you fans who just make me tear up!! THank you all SO much for all the support and for finding the essence of what D is all about!!
I wish you all could have been here today to hear him as he recorded a bunch of music as he prepares for the upcoming events, tour, CD”s” and all…. He sounded absolutely amazing and he is singing with pure inspiration!! I can say that the wait will be well worth it.
David has been extremely happy these past several days, has been out with his friends and just chilling. He was a great sport about the recordings today and was in great spirits this whole week. Also, thank you all for the love and support!! And yes, I am a Packer FANATIC!!!!
SS, you are EVERYWHERE!!! How do you keep up with it all?? As for D, he isn’t allowed to be on chats at this time, he is the ultimate rule keeper so unfortunately, he likely won’t be on here. However, his myspace is going to have a video up within a few days and he will be making regular updates during the rehearsal weeks and during the tour. They will have a lot more time to do that than during the show…
David is NOT perfect!!! But, I can’t tell you the details.
My favorite David performance ever was joyful joyful at Symphony Hall when he was 13 and still had the vocal cord issues…I’ll tell you why you can’t see the whole performance of JJ. The sound person messed up and turned off the mic when the whole choir came in and you couldn’t hear him sing until the end. It was very frustrating because he really sounded soulful all through that song..
1. David dealt with the vocal cord problem very well. He just had to rest more than usual and not sing as long each time he sang. He usually could only sing 1 or 2 songs, maybe 3 at the most. When he sang at Symphony Hall, he sang 4 songs, but it was VERY hard for him to do that many and he struggled but still sounded great.
EVERYTHING you guys have sent and given us. The hat, books, cookies, thai food, shirts, stuffed animals, letters, poems, and many more, but mostly we just appreciate all the love we feel behind all the things. The feelings we get are what seem to tie us all together, and that is what David is all about. Spreading good feelings!!!
The growl was just something he did without even thinking about it. I think it was just something he heard other people do and he developed it as a habit subconsciously. It didn’t have anything to do with the cord problem.
I will say that David has been writing, although it is hard to do it when you only have a week off and want to chill out for a bit before hitting the rehearsals and preparing for the tour. The decisions of his songs making the album will be determined once we have selected the best songs. If David’s songs are some of the best, they will be on the album, and I would predict that the odds are quite high that you will hear something original on David’s CD. No promises, but I do think his writing is quite good and possibly amazing…
OK, here is something that is very important for people to understand. After Shop Around, David said he couldn’t “feel” himself sing. He could hear, but not feel himself which affected how aggressively he felt he could go after his notes. That is the big reason we decided to pick songs most of the time that did not use electric bass or too much drums as it affected the way David sang those songs. i.e, You’re the Voice, Neil Diamond Night, and Shop Around. He just doesn’t sound as confident with the notes on those songs compared to When you Believe, Long and Winding Road, and especially the last night. The exception to this was when he was able to wear the in ear monitors. He always sang with complete confidence when he used the inear monitors.
I’m not sure of my favorite song he did. I really liked When you Believe because it is such a difficult song to pull off, but I also liked the original versions he did of And So it Goes, Love me Tender and THink of Me. My favorite was likely the rendition of “Think of Me” that he never got to perform. What is meant by a Senator by the way??
I don’t know if he has a fanmail specific email yet, but will likely have one this week. I can say that there will be a lot of new stuff coming out this next week digitally related..
BTW, did David’s version of Nature Boy ever make it up on the net? I don’t remember if anyone posted it but it is one of my favs of him. I also really like You’re all I Need to Get By when he did it on SS as it had some amazing licks and ideas and David totally went for it and did some amazing things with that song. On Idol, I really liked the way he finished off and so it goes as well as the subtleties in DLTSGDOM. I liked the add of the repeated phrase of “seemed to fade to black and white” as well as the other note choices and the soulfulness and unexpectedness of the ending ideas.
We have discussed his mission a few times. The question to ask is: What can David do that can best allow people to feel the spirit?? If it is best for him to go on a 2 year mission, he well. If it is best that he use his ability to touch people by performing and via a music career, he may do that also. It is still too early to detemrine.
OK, I don’t think we are related to any other Archuletas outside of just a few aunts, uncles and cousins, no relation to any in Clinton that I know of or Adam Archuleta (we get asked all the time), as to why he doesn’t like to hear himself or see himself, I think it is just his sense of humility. He just isn’t vain or self-indulgent.
YTV was a song that I first heard from Guy Sebastian who also did Climb Every Mountain and was where we got the idea to have David do CEM on Star Search. When I had David listen to YTV, he instantly loved the song. However, one interesting tidbit is that when Simon made his comment that the tabloids ran with and thought they meant “someone else” might have helped David choose that song, he may have been referring to the producers who were totally behind David singing that song as they knew it when it was a hit in the UK. I don’t think Simon was referring to me, but to the producers who were singing the song for a few days backstage and all over the place. The chorus is so hooky once you hear it a few times. It may be one of those songs that requires a few times rather than just one time to really understand it. David LOVES the song!! I forgot about SMM as one of my favorite songs also. It was one of the easiest for David to connect with once he studied it and listened to the various renditions Dolly did with it. Also, it was one that allowed him to really identify with, being homesick and missing people you care about, it made a lot of sense to him. Also, the studio recording literally was one take, a 2nd one for good measure, and because it only took 10 minutes, a third one just for the heck of it. 3 takes in 15 minutes and he was done. Most of the song was one take.
No, he is not up and near the computer, he is still over with some friends. I will say that he was definitely wanting to sing one song a capella. He did half of it that way although he wanted to do the whole thing a capella. You can read between the lines.
I will say that of the several songs David recorded today for demo purposes, more than half were Christmas songs. Also, they were original arrangements by someone who you may have met on this board before.
I need to make sure I send out a special Thank you to Eric, Richard, Brett, Rochelle, Maria, Dr. ODD and I’m sure so many others who have given of your time, means, and love and support to help David along his journey through Idol and beyond. I am confident that David will continue to merit your support as he is definitely committed to creating the best music possible and he showed some incredible skills today in the studio!!!! I wish I could share it with you!!!!!
I like that ancient comment, you really can miss a lot if you step away, which I have to do a lot.
The comment about David’s ability to find the tender moment in songs, was sooo evident to me during In This Moment, he was singing full blast and then just quietly sang the word I (but with 3 or 4 different notes) with his eyes closed mind you. It was so moving, I was thinking how could he be just 17, his skills for interepation or “feeling” a song are so far beyond, it boogles my mind.
So many great postings and updates. Thank you everyone. It is great that this sight has brought us all together. Great victories are won when ordinary people execute their assigned task and our task is celebrating David A. Thank you Rascal for your perspective on this matter. I feel so many of us where inspired by David’s signing, that it brought us healing and a light which directed us to our higher power to search our souls for a new Trust in humanity and life. David is the “witness” for us to watch of a rightious young man, walking in his integrity for all of us to witness.
The word amateur has been redefined over the years and has lost the luster of its original meaning. The English word comes from the Latin word amore, which means “to love.” An amateur is someone who does something simply for the love of it. We all know David sings for the “love of it” and we as amateurs in most anything we really love to do, should be insipired to venture out and make a difference with our passions, whatever they may be. And to do it like David would, with acceptance, no grumbling or whining and with a huge smiles on our faces.
Thank for this ODD stop to visit frequently! Smile!!!
naturgirl – There are many remarkable young people in our communities and I, too, am reminded of this through David–these are the people who will be running our world when we are in our golden years – very comforting
panamom – great list of Jazzman’s comments from fanblast chatbox – thanks for taking the time to condense those comments
I, too, liked “With You” and enjoyed David enjoying his performance. What a risk taker he is. I am looking forward to more like that from him along with all the types of music he can and will perform!
Wow, such great postings. I have so much to do but am drawn to read what everyone is thinking. I had to read Rascal’s comments 3 times to “get it.” Good brain exercises….
Thank you, Tinuvial, for “getting” the Jeremiah reference. I wasn’t trying to suggest David was called to be a prophet, but was “likening the scriptures” to him in the comments there that he was “young” (made me cry) and that mentioned that he was “scared of their faces.” Which had me rotfl as well. There’s a lot of humor in the scriptures if you look at them the right way and that one just floored me. I have others, but I will refrain. I’ve tried them on my family and they look at me weird.
So, a lot of us try to figure out why we have ODD and I’ve given ideas in other posts and I keep coming back to the fact that David is the whole picture. I watched “Nashville Star” last night, watching our Utah guy on there get popped off the first show (though I disagreed that he was the worst, but then who am I?). He’s of the same religion as David, a father, returned missionary, has self-confidence… but I don’t think his song choice was good for connecting and I didn’t get the same feeling as I do with David. Good guy, has the Spirit, but it didn’t transfer. I went to a benefit concert Saturday at our High School with some well known artists – great music, two I know of are of the same religion and religious oriented content was sung very well…. very good. But I don’t feel like I HAVE to get their CD’s and listen to them sing over and over again. That’s the thing. I want to listen to David sing often. Very often. His singing is NOT forgettable. He is really something special and I think it’s the whole package. It’s probably more things than we can even perceive. It’s very exciting! To watch him grow over the years will be very exciting.
I too pray for him, because I know that success can be a trial as well as a blessing. It really is a jungle out there.
Hello Gorgeous, your comments are really resonating with me. Thank you so much for sharing.
I’ve been rewatching performances this morning and will do some more while I iron and I keep thinking about everything he overcame. He dealt with everything they threw at him with such grace – just set his shoulders and did the best he could. That’s why the finale was such a triumphal moment. Nobody can take that night away. The more I watch it, the more I appreciate the fact that he gave it all he had. What a triumphant night!
Thanks for posting “Jazzman’s” comments – I read them a couple of times yesterday. I think they give some added insight. I love that David was able to just be David last week, and hang out with his friends. I’m sure he’s really missed that and that it was very good for him. In the middle of Idol I was thinking how much he needed association with kids his own age and his family. He must have really missed them. Then his Mom was down that week and Dean Kaelin mentioned that he felt that having his Mom with him for a week really helped him too. Boys needs their moms, whether they know it or not. I love my boys and I can’t imagine being away from a 17 year old son for so long. I savor when my college boy comes home. Gosh I miss him. He’s my David. I can’t imagine how hard it is for his family to be doing this with him at this time and I just want to stand up and applaud them.
Some have expressed to know more about David’s religion. You can go to http://www.mormon.org to find basic beliefs listed there. What isn’t mentioned are the programs and guidelines we do for our youth, and if you want to know more about that, you can email me and I will share – no strings attached. I will share, because I feel that some wonder at why he isn’t interested in dating or having a girlfriend, that we advice our youth to not date until they are 16, and then go in groups. we suggest they not focus solely on one person until they are older and more mature. There’s a whole pamphlet of suggestions that will help a young person avoid pitfalls in today’s world and help them keep strong values. That’s all I’ll say about that – but obviously David has chosen to follow many of those suggestions.
Okay – got to go iron. I’m determined to make some progress on my “to do” list today, but mostly wanted to reiterate that I think that David is unique and special and it’s because of everything he is, not just one thing. Once again, I love watching the miracle in progress and don’t want to miss a minute of it, so appreciate all the updates that help us stay current.

Thanks, panamom for posting Jeff’s comments. This is the real Jeff Archuleta, loving, caring and so proud of his son. It’s so nice to hear that David was having fun just being David. David is who he is because of the wonderful loving upbring of his parents. They deserve alot of credit. My brother speaks to Jeff often and has told me over the years what a wonderful caring father he is. I hope everyone can see this now.
daisychain – try them on me, I promise I won’t look at you weird : )
panamom – thank you so much for going through all that trouble, I haven’t had time to go and read it, so it was really nice to get a condensed version.
okay musicao, you got me thinking about all kinds of songs with your suggestions, they kept popping in my head, so I finally succumbed and hopped on here to post them real quick, I have a 3 oclock deadline and I am going to be hitting the wire. Two really have stood out, the first one because the lyrics fit DJ as well as musically, Steve Winwood’s Higher Love Think about it, there must be higher love
Down in the heart or hidden in the stars above
Without it, life is a wasted time
Look inside your heart, I’ll look inside mine
Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be
Bring me a higher love (3x)
Where’s that higher love I keep thinkin of?
I would want him to redo the song in his style, because I don’t particularly care for the way SW did the song.
and the second one is I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly. The lyrics are pretty general and most everyone knows them, so I won’t post, the magic in that song is in the way the lyrics are sung, and in this respect I really think DJ could fly. : )
and I forgot (how could I?) to include two other of my favs on my list earlier, and felt it was too much of a shame to not list them, so I do so now, Bob Dylan and Miles Davis. Bob, certainly not because of his singing, rather because IMO he is the world’s best lyricist, and Miles Davis more for his composing rather than lyrics. Oh, what could have been if the both of them had collaborated on a song and had DJ sing it?
I thought of other lyrics that apply to my ODD and DJ himself while I was at it and couldn’t resist posting them too!
Killing Me Softly With His Song – Roberta Flack
I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him, to listen for a while
And there he was, this young boy, a stranger to my eyes
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
He sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me as if I wasn’t there
But he was there, this stranger, singing clear and loud
…and Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You
Pardon the way that I stare.
There’s nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak,
But if you feel like I feel,
Please let me know that it’s real.
You’re just too good to be true.
Can’t take my eyes off you.
(of course most of the rest of lyrics don’t apply, for obvious reasons : )
okay, deadline…….later Brotherhood of Fans
OK Daisychain, I was at the same concert you were at on Saturday I’m sure of it!!! Are you a band mom? Half way through I whispered to my husband “We are soooo spoiled by listening to David.” Before David, I would have thought – Cool, good. But after, we couldn’t wait to get back to listening to D fast enough. And I won’t even go into new age piano music – except to say that the artist in question would do well to collaborate with D don’t you think?
Did you know Richard was there?
Sorry, I’m just reading backwards. I have to be mentally alert to appreciate all this great commentary. I just laugh however at everyone suggesting songs. It doesn’t matter what I hear, I know David would sing it better and wish he would!!
Since I haven’t been here in 24 hours I see some questions back at #60 or so! And Hello gorgeous, I don’t by any stretch of the imagination think that David will ever date Miley or any other Hollywood type. It’s just not going to happen, but something might, who knows!
Scriptype, do you remember when Ryan asked David about prom and implied that the girl in the audience might be his date? A lot of the young girls were freaked out by this and didn’t vote that night. I was just using that as an example of how fickle some fans can be – no one here I’m sure. Lots of damage control had to be done by cooler heads to get them all calmed down. It was actually hilarious.
Good work on the Jazzman posts! Jeff and Richard were actually completely BLOWN AWAY by what they heard David do in the studio that day. It makes it hard to be patient!!
Remember in one of the interviews when David said he didn’t want to sing a song just because it would be a hit? That is had to mean something? That is the essential difference between David and lots of other artists. I hope that Jive will let him sing songs that both have meaning and that will be hits.
When I heard some of the songs on Jordin’s CD (not that Jordin has anywhere near the voice David does) my first thought was that they have just made her into a clone pop star. All of a sudden she sounded just like everyone else. Not many songs there that showcased her vocals at all, just the Big Mac, not even any special sauce on it. While I can’t believe that David has come this far just to be turned into everyone else, it does cause a bit of anxiety, simply because I don’t understand how much control or say David will have with his music. If he has control, it will be breathtaking.
I can’t wait to be blown away too! (oh, already have been….)
Happy to see him say that about David’s songwriting, as I feel that way about it as well.
and DLTSGDOM – this was my favorite of all the songs I have heard David sing so far. I would love for him to do the full song, really peeved they didn’t do studio versions of the finale songs because I don’t think DJ will include it on his CD and might not ever do it again, at least as a recording, but I can hope anyway.
….since I have already been blown away, maybe I can use a more powerful analogy and say David’s CD will be like a hurricane, Hurricane David, …..Rock me like a hurricane, okay maybe not those lyrics are coming back to my mind and uhm, don’t think I want to be saying that……but thinking about the Scorpions, what about “Winds of Change” musicao?
I agree archu adorable, it does cause a bit of anxiety….I think that is why some of us are thinking about songs for him. I’m not sure how much control he will have, but the things Jeff said concerning having at least one song written by David gives me hope. He might have to compromise on the inclusion of at least one industry stylized pop song, but it will be the songs that David is inspired by that are going to sizzle and pop and eventually have the longevity to effect music on a whole, and be remembered. In a succession of CD releases we should see more and more of the songs that are, in the words of Randy, ‘dope’ songs for David and less of the others. Like the winnowing fork separating the wheat from the chaff. I really feel like our favorite CD and the one with David’s best work probably will not be his first one, but rather his second or third, or even his 20th!!!!
Tinuviel, after seeing your hurricane analogy, I couldn’t resist posting one of my most favorite articles ever written-as a matter of fact, I was talking about it just yesterday: Favorite paragraph first, link to the article second:
Archuleta Time. They say that when you are near the center of a hurricane it sounds like a locomotive roaring straight toward you. Well, when you are in the mosh pit during a David Archuleta performance it sounds like a hurricane about to level you to your foundations, break through your levee, flood your basements and render your neighborhood uninhabitable for generations. The shrieking starts at the first mention of his name. It increases when his face appears projected on the screen and explodes when The Chosen One steps onto the stage. Girls jump up and down, bubble over in tears and scream, “I love you!” throughout his time on stage. At the breaks, he waves to the screamers with his trademark “Aww, cut it out, you guys!” impossible-not-to-love embarrassed grin. Being in the center of this whirlwind of ecstasy is not an experience a grownup should dive into unprepared, although many ladies of a certain age in the pit seemed to get pretty well carried away by it

thanks, archu_adorable, for the explanation about “prom-gate”. I didn’t know that the young girls didn’t vote because of that. It’s weird.
I read a live blog on Fan Blast in which Richard hinted that the first word in one of David’s tour songs is the word ‘like’. Richard was coy and wouldn’t say whether the word is in the title or the first word of the song. Could it be “Like a Rock” by Bob Seger, as someone mentioned above? Or, could it be “Like a Rolling Stone” by Dylan?
Lyrics:
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you?
People’d call, say, “Beware doll, you’re bound to fall”
You thought they were all kiddin’ you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin’ out
Now you don’t talk so loud
Now you don’t seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You’ve gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you’re gonna have to get used to it
You said you’d never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He’s not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain’t no good
You shouldn’t let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain’t it hard when you discover that
He really wasn’t where it’s at
After he took from you everything he could steal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They’re drinkin’, thinkin’ that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you’d better lift your diamond ring, you’d better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can’t refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You’re invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
thanks, Josie, that is exactly what I was thinking of. I had read that article actually, maybe that is what prompted me to think of a hurricane, ‘leveled to my foundations’ – perfect.
scriptype – now you got me thinking of all the possibles…..my editor is starting to give me ‘the eye’, so stop it, all of you, I can’t think…….uuggh, why can’t I just write about David, my ODD, the Brotherhood of Fans?????? I could make that deadline, I really could, Mr. Editor, so how about it?
oh, alright, later guys…..
Thanks for sharing those lyrics, scriptype #106. I didn’t get a chance to come back here after this morning, so I’m pleased to see so many more additions to this conversation.
archu_adorable #102, I completely agree about Jordin’s CD. And it isn’t so much that the pop tracks sound like everything else but that these songs needed the incredible craft of a different kind of vocal artist – say Melinda Doolittle (yeah, I’m still bitter she didn’t win last year) – to elevate the music to the level of art. No offense to Jordin, who is quite vocally talented but very rough around the edges in her singing, but she’s not an artist. She’s simply a singer.
Here’s the thing about the art of brilliant vocal styling. They can sing the most mournful dirge or the most feel-good ditty, it doesn’t matter the song. It’s all about the delivery.
Think Billie Holiday, who could turn any sentimental love song into a soul-crushing, heartrending blues lament. Think Ella Fitzgerald, who once turned a nursery rhyme into a jazz standard. Here is the proof on You Tube if you need convincing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUYpUogn91U
A brilliant vocal artist can turn ANY SONG into a work of genius. In that regard, I have every faith David Archuleta has what it takes to transform any bubblegum pop into art. Who was it who said he’s The Alchemist?
And haven’t we seen David do exactly what you are talking about, HG, to a degree on some of the cheesy songs he’s had to release on AI? I think “Sweet Caroline” is the best cheesy song ever with the worst arrangement ever. I keep listening to it just to hear David’s voice, along with “Longer” and WCWIO, songs I normally wouldn’t care to hear again.
Earlier there were a few posts about “With You.” Do you remember how awkward it was for him to get to his mark that night before he sang? He didn’t quite know what to do? I think that distracted him and got him off on the wrong foot. There were many nights when I wished Ryan would just disappear, no more so on that night, so we could have seen him get going on that song with out the unnecessary distraction.
As has been pointed out, vocally, he outsings Chris Brown in the 2nd half of that song and as soon as he stopped the hip-swishing and started with the up and down bobbing at the end, I knew it could have been brilliant.
My own 17 year old son has given me a lot of insight into David this season. When that happened, he said “I know just how he feels!” Being 17, not knowing for sure what you are doing, being afraid you were doing it wrong – AWKWARD but typical 17. He said the same thing a couple of times when David was asked ridiculous questions on the show by Ryan or in the call-in segment, and didn’t know what to say. That’s the mystery of David – at times being so completely 17 and at others being so completely fully formed.
Yes! Archu_adorable! I was thinking when the country style artist was singing the second song that it was the closest we got to David that night. I thought that one was pretty good. And I like HW – but I love David! Just something special. So, my 15 year old just doesn’t have the music soul to keep going with the band, which makes me sad. I’ve had others stay in longer and love our High School Band, but thought I’d help contribute for others. We spent $300 on his instrument this year to get it to work…. another contribution.
Sorry, folks, a little personal there. We’re trying to raise money for new band instruments at our high school by having benefit concerts…. all in the name of helping those future DA’s. And we have some talented kids at our school. I’m one of those band moms who is brought to tears by the marching band. Terrible.
I really wish I’d known Richard was there. I didn’t look around a lot – but I don’t know if I would have recognized him. Shoot! I would have talked to him.
Okay, so just love all your comments. It’s so fun to come here.
My sons (both in early 20′s) said same thing archu_adorable about some of the questions put to David – they said they were “dumb” questions.
I am struck with how David keeps saying in many interviews that he is “just 17.” He wants to do music that 17 year olds appreciate while he is 17, he wants to be 17. For just 17, he is wise in many ways.
Hello Rascal,
I like much of what you’ve written, especially the caution concerning our divination of David. I think that personal spiritual experiences and one’s adherence to a religious institution’s principles are complimentary and provide for a fuller overall “spiritual” experience. One advantage of a religious institution is not it’s “self-perpetuation”, but rather an objective external reference point by which we can evaluate our profound personal experiences. I love my personal spiritual experiences, yet I also know that they can be misguided, sometimes self-serving, and even sometimes at the expense of others.
Without adherence to some external reference point, religious or otherwise, it seems we may easily believe and equate our personal experiences with the divine. That’s sure seems like a formula for disaster, for if one begins to equate their personal experiences with the divine, without subjecting them to an external objective religious or otherwise standard for evaluation, then we are in essence making ourselves divine. That’s would be just as bad as looking to David Archuleta as being somehow divine.
Contrary to instinct, it is only by our adherence to an objective, external reference point that we have any chance of verifying if our personal spiritual experiences are reasonable, if they should be accepted or rejected, or if they should be acted upon as truth.
Take Care,
Gallie
I agree, Gaillie. My religion helps me remember the difference between the source of light and being an instrument in the hands of the lightsource. Good thought.
Like others, I often look to my own teenager and remember my raised children as teenagers to keep me grounded in this one. I was rewatching “David’s Day” for a while today (ironing did get done) and I loved how they devoted an entire hour to talking with David with minimal news and weather updates. He was so talkative and animated and himself. Part of it was because he was talking with people who were sincerely friendly, his fans, and people who knew kids. While he has an old soul, he’s definitely 17 and it’s nice when people respect his age. I do get tired of the same old questions. Thoughtful and sincere questions bring great responses.
Back to reality………
#112 Gallie, I agree with the need for an objective way of evaluating our spiritual and religious experiences. And I think the need is the same for our politics. We are often too emotional, and not rational about these two important subjects. How many of us have been told that politics and religion are not ‘polite’ subjects for the dinner table? We need a new language that takes the i’s out of those words. If we must say that they are forever out of bounds, then how will we move forward in our collective consciousness? Are we doomed always to see politics and religion as divisive? A language of respect and compassion would be a great place to start a dialogue.
To Hello Gorgeous (#108) once again, may I? {{{{huggg}}}} (GOSH, I think I love you!
lol )
Your words re: “the thing about the art of brilliant vocal styling….it’s all about the delivery…[and I've been meaning to bring up Ella—both a brilliant stylist and an unparalleled voice] … a brilliant vocal artist can turn ANY SONG into a work of genius. … I have every faith David Archuleta has what it takes to transform any bubblegum pop into art.”
Yes. Yes. A thousand times,YES. My feelings to a perfect tee.
A thought about “With You” (over which I am bonkers): In light of both what his dad said about earpieces (not being able to feel the music without them, particularly with songs having more percussion and bass) and what David himself said about the occasional “mind cramp” (just loved that and his river/raft analogy!), as well as many insights from Dean Kaelin’s reflections, I suspect he had that song all wrapped up and in his pocket perfectly and entirely in spite of how full his plate was at that time, and was “pumped” “stoked” to do it—didn’t need more time to practice or anything. (I swear I remember him even saying “Man, I had a blast up there” in reference to that performance, but I can’t find the vid to back that up.) Anyway, I think he just needed earpieces, dang it! (grrr… give the guy some earpieces, for pete’s sake!)
Daisy (#113) — re: “He was so talkative and animated and himself. Part of it was because he was talking with people who were sincerely friendly, his fans, and people who knew kids.”
I would only add that he also did absolutely brilliantly in interviews with some who were not sincerely friendly, not fans, nor knew children — i refer specifically in the EW interview. (I am so proud of him I can hardly stand it!)
Holy Nutter Butters, I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Seriously gettin’ shakey just thinkin’ about it.
archu adorable – I had thought the same thing about the intro getting ready for the song – it was awkward, Ryan tells David that he can just go on over there now, and David kind of seems suprised and not sure what to do and then he oh okay and goes, then Ryan says something about that all being choreographed for David to go get into position, but if it was choreographed then something didn’t go right or David would have known exactly what to do. I wondered if that is why David starts out slightly behind the music on that song.
you are right hello, point well taken.
I am digging through my brain on the possibles for the song that starts with ‘like’ either at the first of the song or the title, and although I love LARS by Bob, it seems a bit jaded for David, and therefore not really his style. I came across a possibility that had me echoing Sam in LOTR, “Now that’s an eye-opener, and no mistake!” – what if it is ‘Like A Prayer’ !, now, I can see all of you now, saying, no, no, not Madonna!, but hear me out. Like hello gorgeous said, David can take bubble gum pop and make it art. Richard would not have said that about the word ‘like’ if it was a song we weren’t familiar with, that wouldn’t make sense, so it would have to be a song that David is covering. Also, look at the lyrics:
I hear your voice, its like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, oh God I think Im falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me
Just like a prayer, your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery
Just like a dream, you are not what you seem
Just like a prayer, no choice your voice can take me there
Just like Angels, this song has an overtly spiritual theme and it is in a key and rhythm that David leans toward. Out of all of Madonna’s songs, this is the only one I ever liked even a little, and I can tell you it wasn’t because of the singer or the way it was sung, but because of the lyrical melody and content. David could easily take this bubble gum pop and turn it into art with an original David James Archuleta signature.
This is fun, I am going to dig up some more……you know feeding that ODD, it is voracious…..
Everyone to get your ODD fix head over to fan blast they just posted Davids first video blog for his fans.
Arhu_Adorable – I agree with you about the With You song. I was glad he was going to do that song. I thought he would do great on it. The thing I have noticed about him is that if he is unsure about the song choice or something else distracts him (like Ryan) that is where his downfall is. He started off a bit behind the music and then worked it out towards the end. He needs more confidence in himself and I wish he could see what we see in him. I so totally wanted him to nail that song because I know he can. It is all about the command and control that Rascal has mentioned. When he is comfortable with a song and feels it there is no one that can beat him. I think he was probably nervous about it because Simon never liked it when he sang any fast song and he went out there knowing they would not like it. That is not the attitude to have. I believe he just needed more practice time that week because they had 3 songs to do. I still say he can sing that type of music. He does have the voice and just needs practice. What was it he said after it”funny seeing a white guy singing it” or something like that he said. I just love his personality.
#108 Hello gorgeous- My father-in-law was also so upset last year that Melinda did not win. He was a big fan of hers. You have said some things I think are true and have already said to others. It takes a truely amazing artist to take a terrible song and sing it with so much feeling that it makes people want to listen to it anyway. David has the ability to do that. Clay Aiken was one of the best vocalists on the show but after David sang “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”, I remembered that Clay sang it also and thought no one could sing it better than Clay. So I went back to YouTube and watched one of the earlier performances he did with that song. Clay has one of the best voices and vocal range I have ever heard, but there was something missing after I listened to it again. No doubt the man can sing great, but there was a lack of emotion and feeling to me. After listening and watching both David and Clays version I have to say to me…David had him beat. David does not have the range that Clay has but David just sang it so amazing. It was like he wanted us to know what he was feeling and he made us feel what he was feeling. There are many artists I’m sure who try to show true emotion in a song, but not all can do it. David has the power to do that. He not only sings the music he feels it.
I just love reading all the comments on here. I need a dictionary to understand some of them. You people are so smart. I love this website!!!
Gosh, beebee, you’re making me blush.
Tinuviel, I agree that Ryan had tripped him up just before he got started with his “With You” performance. Dang those silly “chats.”
Now, about Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” I really hope this isn’t the song David is going to sing. Yeah, the lyrics seem to connote a spiritual/religious experience, but this is Madonna! Many others have said the lyrics are really an ode to oral sex:
“I’m down on my knees/You know I’ll take you there.”
So, um, no. Just..No! I do not want David singing that song. He’s not yet of legal age, and I don’t want him entering my fantasies, singing a song about the exultations of you know what – especially with Archie’s trademark lip-licking – because I don’t want to go there!
Sorry, but Nooooo!
BeeBee I am with you, give him his ear mic back this young man is amazing!!!!
I liked how David pulled it together on “With You”, but I too hated the way Ryan introduced it. He didn’t give David time to get setup on stage. Also, David didn’t have an in-ear monitor and couldn’t hear the music well. One would think a top show like Idol would have the sound controls working and always in place.
We were, of course, seeing the live version. It’s also possible that David knew the judges’ opinions from the dress rehearsal and that made him uneasy about performing it. Even if no one said anything, he might have felt the vibe. He is very intuitive.
Later, when Ryan had Cook sitting there just before his performance, Ryan cut to a commercial, giving Cook plenty of time to setup.
Well I finally found someone that could beat Roseane Barr singing the Star Bangled Banner….David Cook!!! It was a close call but he pulled it off over her!! Sorry Archie fans I could not resist it. Please forgive me???
Musicao – I loved your comment about wanting to tell people at work you wanted to get back to notingdavid.org that was ROTFL!!!! I had to call my father-in-law and read him that one. I love reading all these comments on here. It’s almost addictive just like David is.
Inspired by David – thanks! i was trying to hide my laughter in theoffice while writing it.
Good Gosh! I posted this AM, finally got back here after my day, and dang it! If there were’nt lik 60 comments to catch up on! And now I have to go to fanblast to ck. out that video blog! Oh my gosh! I am just so excited! The line between my “real” life and this life has completely blurred now. And I have to write to Oprah! I’ve had all day to consider my O letter of the day. At least I can get something important done while I’m at work!
I am going to tell Oprah what strength of character and determination David possesses. When he forgot the lyrics on WCWIO, and just stood ther w/his ever present smile, took his licks from the judges, and left the stage, I was just heartbroken for him! I was anxious all week about his next performance, esp. since it was another Beatles week, and he wasn’t familiar w/their music. When Tue. arrived, I seriously had sweaty palms and feet, my heart was racing…and when he laughed about his mistake in the pre-performance interview, and went on to say that you always have to look on the positive side of things…I knew he was A-OK! Of course, he killed the song, and showed all of us that he is truley a champion!
I spent many years competing as an elite runner, and have also coached my share of fine athletes. While preparing for the Olympic Trials Marathon, I definitely had my share of ups and downs….I was knocked down and trampled at the start of one marathon, had to drop out of another due to heat problems, etc. I kept at it, and did run in the Trials, and had a lot of success as a runner. I have seen many of my athletes overcome obstacles w/great courage to reach their goals. We call it the Champion Attitude. Always be positive, never lose sight of your goal, and keep working every day to achieve it. Take everything in stride, and don’t let adversity get the best of you.
Do these qualities remind you of anyone we know? David showed poise, character, discipline, grit and determination beyond his years during AI. He did everything all the other Idols had to do, plus 15 hrs. a week for school! That’s like losing an entire day! He had to do it all w/1 less day than they had every week! He never complained or made it an issue. He never mentioned it if he was sick. He didn’t let the snarky media get to him! And he outperformed them, week after week after week.
That’s what I’m going to tell Oprah today. Give this incredible boy the power of your stage, the intelligent questions he deserves, and the chance to share his gifts with even more people around the world!
Plus, What do you think, maybe we could unicycle to Chicago? We have to come up w/a spectacular gift guys!
I love all of your posts! Thanks Rascal!
Eleannbo: Tell Oprah I would unicycle from Panama too.
Sorry don’t have time to post much. Got to check that video in Fanblast, and got to find that David’s Day somewhere. Life is just so busy. Love you all.
I know that life won’t break me…
I have bad days and I have really bad days. Yesterday could have been a really bad day. Six months ago it would have been but yesterday was different. I didn’t have to go it alone.
and through it all, she offers me protection, a lot of love and affection…
I chose to tough it out. I didn’t want to leave work. That could be a slippery slope, a new low. It’s a threshold I never want to cross, leaving work because of my chronic pain.
she won’t forsake me, I’m lovin angels instead.
Thank you DJ. Thank you for Angels.
janey- I have a friend w/chronic pain, and I know how devastatingly difficult it can be, and how nobody believes you. I really get it, and I am so sorry you are going through it. Keep the faith, and hang in there. I’m sure David would be glad to know he could be of help!
elannbo, thank you for caring.
I know how crazy this would sound to anyone else, but DJ has made all the difference. Because of him, I’m OK with it. Really. Sometimes it’s a matter of distraction and we know how good DJ is at that. But mostly it was a fundamental change in perspective. DJ (btw your post was the perfect segway, thanks) is a living/breathing example of the Champion Attitude. Add to that his sweet and compassionate personality and you can’t help but feel better.
Wrote to “O” today. Suggested she visit this site and recommended she have a cross section of fans represented in the audience.
