Dang It, I Caved

The power coming through the scratchy cell-phone recordings and hand-held video rigs is simply too indelible to ignore. If the experience of watching a five-inch square recording is as soul-stirring as this, I would be an intolerant old idiot not to avail myself of the opportunity to be in the same place at the same time as when this cosmic alchemy occurs. Life is too unpredictable. Waiting for the perfect context, the ideal venue, is a fool’s errand.
So, after many entreaties to join her for the New Hampshire show, I have taken up Mamma Josie’s offer. Being a New York City boy, I could have more easily gotten to the Long Island or even the Newark show, but if I’m going for the proverbial Full Monty of Archupreciation, it might as well be with another ODD Archie–and not just any ODD Archie, mind you, but one of the true originals. She who coined one of the earliest most-popular terms of endearment for David, the oft-used, occasionally maligned (by yours truly), “Love Nugget.”
Dang it, do I have to carry a sign?

Well, I’ll be danged. Rascal NUGGET you Nugget you! Oh yes, you do have to carry a sign -- get thinking now buster!
Happy!
Moma Josie You Rock!
I’m so happy that you are back rascal! I really missed you. No one know how to put in words what we all feel like you do, no o-n-e!
And you carring a sign would be a pic that I would pay a LOT to see! hahahaha
Ohh and yes, Moma Josie is a TRUE Archie, just like you rascal.
Ohh dang it! I miss the old good Nugget generation!
Don’t feel alone, many of us are rethinking this and are braving the hordes of tweens and teens……enjoy!
Rascal, I am so happy that you are back… I was (we all were) sooo disappointed when you left. Please don’t go away again! I am really glad that you have decided to go see David live! I can’t wait to read your review! I really didn’t think you would make it to the end of the concert without caving in! Going with Josie will be perfect! Perhaps she will talk you into joining the FanBlast party in DC!! You are loved and respected for your insight on David as much as we love and respect David for his singing! Please consider coming!
Good for you -- feels good doesn’t it! I too caved a few weeks ago and will be going to Detroit on 7/24. This 46 year old womanfan will be driving 5 hours to see and hear this precious young man. I am taking time off work (didn’t even tell anyone where I will be that day -- just out of town) and will haul my ODD from northern Michgian to the big city of Detroit to wait in line with the young cuties to get an autograph. I will probably be like the little girl in the “crying video” and won’t even get his autograph. I am prepared to laugh, cry and be so nervous and excited to see that piano come up out of that stage. Since I am alone in a city I don’t live in I can feel free to “act the fool” and let my feelings fly. I feel like I am being drawn there to see this concert by an unknown force. How crazy that would seem to anyone other than your faithful followers Rascal. I am also thinking of going to the concert in Grand Rapids which is near the end of their tour. So -- here’s to you my dear Rascal, partner in David A. Enjoy your concert and I know I will. You will never forgive yourself if you do not take part in all this mayham.
The screaming tweens and teens are loud, but David’s incredible voice soars over all and you will be transported. I went to the SJ concert last night and he was amazing.
Thank you for coming back Rascal. This is my favorite site, one where I feel in the company of intelligent adults who marvel over this phenomenon that is David Archuleta. I don’t feel ridiculous here!
P.S.
Rascal -- I am making you a sign to take with you. lol!!!
Great news, Rascal. Wow. I’m sure it will be worth it.
Well, the plot thickens considering my live blogging of Saturday’s events. Now the press folks are telling me I’ll have access to interview only five of the 10 idols -- and they won’t tell me which five until tomorrow! I’ll throw a fit if David A. is not one of them. Arrrggghhh! The suspense!
Meantime, turns out that for the show itself, instead of being up in the rafters as originally thought, I may be down in the ‘photo pit’ in front of the stage. Oh. My. God. You can count on some spectacular photos if that’s the case … Let’s see what tomorrow brings in the next edition of “As the Idol Press Agent Turns.”
Yay, Rascal, I knew you’d cave, also bet you’ll be so glad you did. “Full Monty of Archupreciation” … love it!
Experiencing David’s artistry live at this incredibly exciting launching point of his career is not to be missed if you can help it. After reading about fans flying in from England, Puerto Rico, and beyond, I feel so fortunate to be able to go in my home town.
Can’t wait for July 26 (Toronto concert), and to read your review of the New Hampshire show. Welcome to the club!
Hola everyone!!!
Long time lurker coming out finally!!! Rascal I’m glad you decided to experience the Archuleta effect in his full glory live in concert. I’m traveling from Puerto Rico just to see him in the DC concert and meet other ODDiers too… I’m really exited for ther show. After watching the videos of Archie’s performances I know the experience in the stadium will be like no other. Josie, you are the best!!!!
I’m so excited to have two of the David Archuleta fans who have helped me sort out my feelings over the last few months at the same concert as me and my husband! Like you Rascal, he loves David. But he is (understandably) worried about being one of the only men among thousands of screaming tweens. His only request was to be up on the side, but I got tickets on the floor. From what I’m hearing, he may be surprised at the diverse group.
David’s music brings serenity and inspiration to my crazy life. Sometimes, when I am uptight and rushing, I can’t wait to get in my car or go for a walk and listen to my ipod. It was necessary for me to go to my first American Idol concert.
I’ve been meaning to say thank you for sharing with all of us -- I always love running across your comments here and at article comment boards.
I feel certain you and Josie will have a truly wonderful time.
Yeeeaaaaaah! Now we can get a real up-close and personal documentation of that ‘cosmic alchemy’ from the master writer himself! I am really looking forward to that one!! Somebody better arrange a meeting between David and Rascal, I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
Still hoping to get into a concert myself. Wish there was a section for those of us who want to sit DOWN, and listen! You’re a good man Rascal, hope you guys have a wonderful time!!
And Caseydog, can’t wait to see & hear what you can capture on Saturday!! What an assignment! I liked the questions you spoke of earlier especially about taking care of his voice, and how/if he was spiritually fortifying himself & other idols. Here’s ‘crossies’ for you too, hoping you can interview our David!
Thanks Rascal for caving. I went to Glendale and now have to go to another and maybe even a third. I think it was Janey on another thread that says you are simply ravenous for more once you hear David sing and when you hear him sing live your hunger increases exponentially. So your caving is balm to my pragmatic side that keeps telling me I am freakin’ over the top.
As far as the screaming goes, it dissolves into the background as you are ushered into the magic of David’s voice and performance.
ROFL! Too funny. I can almost see the expression on your face with that last line, rascal. A sign?
Naturgirl I posted on to your response on the other thread, but I have 2 tickets call me -- 801-224-9893.
Rascal, since I am going to SLC concert with Josie as well, I am completely ON topic! We will think of a great sign for you, maybe even a t-shirt.
You go, boy!
archu_adorable -- Glad to see you’re staying on-topic, because I’ve got my eye on you!
I knew full-well that after Josie came back from SLC there would be no way she would allow me to remain on the sidelines, so I headed her off at the pass. Hey, wait a minute--this is YOUR fault!
How about a t-shirt with “When you’re screaming, you can’t hear him.” on it? Think that’ll work?
Rascal -- DONE! What size do you need?
Way to go Rascal!!! You have finally yielded to the overwhelming sensation known as David Archuleta!!!! You can now admit your ODD to your fans…ha ha…!! We love ya Rascal!!! You know you truly have ODD if you are willing to go thru the multitudes of cell phone crazed teenagers to see the unfolding phenomenom of David Archuleta!!!
Love the idea of that tee shirt. Can it be mass produced, and can someone make everyone read it?
I’m so glad you are going, Rascal! I could have seen David in Michigan in early September, but I just couldn’t wait that long and will make a four-hour trip to Indianapolis in a couple weeks. I can hardly wait. I even confess that I am going to hang out near the busses with the another fan and try to meet David in person. I’m hardly a teen — I’m a 36-year-old college professor! I think the chance to see him sing live is too good to pass up and I believe he could be a music legend in coming years.
I didn’t spend big money on floor seats or anything like that. I figured that I could see the screen and hear his voice fill the arena, and I’d be happy. I will splurge good money on his first tour for better seats.
You caved; I caved. And we’ll all be glad we did. I saw David LIVE last night in San Jose. The world stopped when his set began. I didn’t ‘wake up’ until he was introducing Cook’s. Only then did I remember that I was supposed to phone my sister so she could hear.
My only complaint is that he leaves the stage far too quickly. After WYS the audience delivers a thunderous approval and we wanted to continue giving kudos & bravos to David for all four songs. But, he is already moving back and telling us how special the next performer is — and poof! He is gone!
I wanted him to bow center, stage right, stage left, and back to center. Smiling and bowing. And allow the audience to thank HIM. Throw flowers on the stage, for gosh sakes!
We have this saying around our house (maybe others have it too)
It’s not necessarily about the places you go, it’s about the stories you get to tell.
I hope you come back with some good ones and write about them as only you know how.
omg!!!! I am so excited for you Rascal and Josie too. I’m SO glad you caved. Now, we’re gonna be treated to more beautiful writings….TAKE A CAMERA dude! TEN MORE DAYS until I am in heaven listening to our luv nugget! OMG….I’m seriously going to throw up from the excitement.
hugs,
Fe
Not just listen, it’s, TEN MORE DAYS till I SEE our luv nugget, hee hee!
Who didn’t see this coming a mile away? LOL Good for you, Rascal. Now that I know you’re going, I’ll know there’s one tour review that’s going to be worth more than others.
Can’t wait! (Sadly I will be out of the country by the time David gets to my city in August
It’s a trip I’ve planned since last year so there’s no way to postpone. Who knew that a phenomenon called David Archuleta was going to happen between then and now?)
How exciting that you’re both going to the concert together!
I still remember all the fun we had months ago discussing David…I’ve missed you Rascal, but I love your blog! Have a fantastic time!
Now archu_adorable and Josie, you make double sure and report back to us if he even squeaks the tiniest of screams, if his voice even lifts the slightest above normal, okay?
Good for you, Rascal! And good for us! I can’t wait to read how you describe the roof being blown off that place! Sounds like there will be quite a few of your readers at one of the SLC concerts. I know daisychain will be at one as well.
Someone definitely get a picture of Rascal in the T-shirt and holding a sign, please! I do believe we could hold an auction for it.
If David’s amazing talent and career develop the way we hope and believe it will, I think we’ll all be glad that we got to see David live at this early point in his career. You may remember the band Air Supply from the early 1980s. One of the band’s leads, Graham Russell, is from northern England. One night when he was just a teen, he happened upon a young unknown band playing at a local pub. Years later, he says how grateful he was to take the time to stop and listen.
That band’s leads were two boys barely out of their teens themselves, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and you know the band’s name.
Oh My Gosh! Of course you have to bring a sign!!! Paint it with glow in the dark paint so that he can see it really well from the stage! Make sure you paint your full name in HUMONGOUS letters so that he and everybody else recognizes who you are!! And definitely wear that shirt you thought up! If you get a tatoo of David before you go, make sure it’s in a really visible spot so everyone can see it! Show it to security. If it is really, really BIG, maybe they will give you a backstage pass!
It makes total sense to not wait til later to see and hear David, Rascal. Go while you can! I was in San Jose last night. Yes, the screaming is loud but astonishingly, David’s voice does cut through all of that. It’s only when he talks that you can’t really hear him too well. Fortunately for my husband and me last night, there were no screamers and screechers too close to us. That helps.
I decided to go to SJ early for the possible chance of seeing David by the busses. It was blazing hot outside (heat wave in California) with no shade at all. David did come out for maybe 10 minutes and everyone was disappointed when he left. This venue didn’t allow for a place for fans to gather; instead we were jockeying for a position in front of a not so big closed gate. So even though I was only behind a mere two rows of squished (sweaty) bodies and a gate, I really barely could see David, much less interact with him. Once all idols were gone, some fans walked away and some stayed in the off chance some might come back. I stayed thinking of the odds that David could come back since he didn’t stay for very long. Some minutes later word came that the idols were eating lunch until 3 pm (it was 2:10), then it would be sound check time and they may or may not come out again.
I am glad I stayed because to my huge shock, only around 2:20 we saw David coming out the door from down the ramp and walking back up towards us. I know I made a calculated guess that he might actually be considerate of his fans, it’s hard to describe the feeling of seeing him come back (alone too) which was confirmation of his thoughtfulness and kindness. He must have eaten his lunch very quickly. He was sweating the first time he was out and I wouldn’t have blamed him at all for not wanting to do it again. He really, truly, 100% lives up to his reputation of being a nicest sweetest person, or to quote David Cook, “an amazing human being.”
BTW, I was struck by how good he looks (he was only 5 feet away) and his hazel eyes rimmed by dark lashes were simply amazing! Yes, I am a gushing fan. He is that gorgeous.
Darn you Rascal It is your fault completly. But I am glad. I caved to and now I have tickets purchased at this late date for July 14th at the Ecenter in WestValley Utah. My tickets says FBB row 12 seat 8.
This is the first time I have attended a concert alone. I am 52. This is right in the epic of the center of David fandom. The noise will be (well I am at a loss for words at what the noise will be like) OH OH OH and like you I have gone ALL FANGIRL on David. O will not be in the so called nose bleed section I will be in the nose hair section meaning I’ll be able to look up at the singer and see their nose hair. In Cooks case there will be plenty of nose hair in Archies case well that’s one of the strange and wonderful places the mentioned on the last night of the Idol season by Mike Meyers.
Anyhoo: It is your fault and I am glad.
Yes you do have (GET) to make a poster, you know you want to!!!
I plan on making a sign that will go on a (behemoth) white queen size bed sheet. Should be a Gas!!
Dorothy (I’m new here but you will hear from me.
Rascal,
So, finally you caved in. Have a memorable time there with Josie. Look forward to your articles on your encounters.
I would not be surprised to hear that you did things you would not in your wildest dreams thought you would do.
Since spotted David when he sang “Heaven” at AI, I have doubt on my ability to control myself doing things that I previously frown on.
So go, Rascal, just do it! Loosen and enjoy, to heck with inhibition, do it once just for David!
Ah, vermeer: if only I had had your fortitude to wait. My husband & I were there at the loading dock yesterday in the sweltering heat for nearly two hours. We stayed till around 2. I was in the back of the pack, wearing a blue & white straw hat. I saw only glimpses of David. His face is radiant. I could only pass my photos up to the front and he signed them. Also, I made sure he kept a little “Top 10″ item I wrote commemorating his tenth concert which will be a homecoming for him in SLC this Monday. I wish the HP Paviliion had at least tried to organize the fans. There were fewer than 100 of us — it wouldn’t have been so difficult.
Cheers Rascal! Glad to see you’ve done the right thing for yourself. There’s a lot of caving going on around here… After watching the latest videos, I’m inching closer. Today I was moved to the point of being temporarily non functioning- I literally got up from my desk this morning and went outside to pull myself away. The chills and feelings brought on by these performances are overwhelming, I simply couldn’t stop watching and get down to work.
I have to ask myself if I really want to miss this opportunity based on what amounts to flimsy excuses.
Pictures of Rascal????!!!!! I cant wait!!! Or is there any picture of Rascal floating in the net already?
I’m on the 14th, Section 101, Row 12, seat 12, Portal A.
We’re on the right side as you face the stage.
Can’t wait!
*chuckles* -- it’s fun to watch you guys cave one at a time.
Rascal, Rascal, Rascal. Welcome to the ranks. For a sign, how about simply, “David Archuleta’s Rascal.” Those who matter would know how appropriate, and heartfelt, such a statement would be.
You might want to rethink this (kidding). Sacramento’s crowd tonight was unreal. FOUR minutes of absolute pandemonium between SBM and WYSYLM. Gah!
musicao, why won’t you let David sing for you?
Oh scriptype, you were there too! I’ve seen your name before and you are from the bay area (not just visiting)? Only Chikieze said bay area versus the typical “hello San Jose!”
I thought it was pretty crazy of me to even try doing what all these young fans were doing trying to get autographs etc. considering how uncomfortable it was. Didn’t Michael Johns say it was 104 degrees? I was close to the gate but I’m short (dressed in green, in a totally wrong attire for the heat; I forget it’s much warmer in the south bay) so it was hard to see anyone but did get my autograph with the help of another fan in front. Very nice of you to give David something special.
o my gosh, rascal is back!!! i think i speak for everyone when i say we really missed you. please don’t ever leave again, please, please please!
k, i need to catch up on all your posts.
Hi Rascal- I can empathize with your feelings of caving in. I too, have caved into forces that I could not comprehend for the longest time. I contracted a severe case of ODD when I first heard David sing “Another day in paradise”. And I was driven to search for anything and everything about David Archuleta. Being a 45 yr old, single, female, who works in the television news industry. There was no way I was going to admit to my ODD. That is, until I stumbled upon your website. Your articles were so inspiring and the comments from your readers made me realize that this was not a bad thing, and I have come to embrace my ODD gladly & fully. I was not planning on going to the AI concert, but after reading how one must hear David’s singing in person, I marched down to the arena and bought myself a ticket. Sorry this post is so long. Being a long time lurker I finally “CAVED” in to write how muchI enjoy this site. Thank you.
LOL, rascal, get ready to wear a training bar, you have officially become a fangirl. AHHHHHHHHH!!!!
I meant “training bra” haha, whoops.
juliebug-REALLY? 4 minutes of ovation? Now that makes my morning.
rascal-just so you know, caving in had less to do with me and everything to do with David. I’ll let you know for sure on Tuesday, but I’m thinking it will be worth every scream, every song, every note, every smile.
Rascal I have lurked for months and it is only recently that I have been logging in. And I felt bad that you suddenly went off — glad your back!
When I read last night that you were holding off watching DA live I decided to register to give you a piece of my mind — whatta???!!! Are you nuts!?!! I am halfway around the globe so I do not have the luxury of postponing watching this amazing talent in the flesh. Been living vicariously through all the other arch angels who have been generous in sharing their experiences with DA. Otherwise? Frustration all the way…
So am doubly glad to see a change in perspective Haha. There is no way out but to submit to the sublime David James M. Archuleta
This is another step in your journey on notingDavid. I can’t wait to read how it goes for you
Gosh!
Rascal, I wouldn’t presume to say that I *know* you — but I think I have a sense of you from your writing. I believe you are a very strong individual. And I believe that only a star on the level of David James Archuleta, 17, could cause such a change of heart.
You and Josie are going to have a blast.
(And today I work up the guts to tell my husband that I NEED to get to another show, alone, so that I can truly release my not-so-inner fangirl.)
randyisgreat -- no, I think you had it right the first time, I am going to need a BAR to set me up for the pandemonium!
Kait -- It wasn’t weakness that made me “cave” but strength. Despite the fact that I consider myself a die-hard individualist, a true iconoclast, I know there have been times, mostly in my early life, when I didn’t do something or pursue an interest to the degree that I might have because it wasn’t “cool.” There are issues of personal tolerance here to be sure, but I wasn’t about to let anything other than my own internal guidance make this decision for me.
I have alluded to my view of David as a cultural rebel a few times, but I have yet to post a full exploration of it. I will at some point, but part of it has to do with the fact that David is not--and perhaps will never be--conventionally “cool.” However, I have an emerging hypothesis that we may be on the brink of the demise of cool itself. Or at least a redefinition of it. This has to do with everything from climate change to capitalism, and how the demands of the modern world are changing our values. David Archuleta may well be on the vanguard of this evolution.
Thanks for all the comments and encouragement, everyone--David’s true fans are a generous and compassionate bunch. If any of you remember Todd Rundgren, it reminds me a lot of his fan base (it occurs to me that covering a few Rundren tunes would be a great idea for David at some point). No doubt David would be very happy to know the character of his followers.
If only I was anywhere in the USA this summer…I’d make sure I’d make it to at least one concert. Alas, I am half way around the world…and made the unlucky choice to vacation in New Zealand for 2.5 weeks in July. My son was begging to go to grandma’s farm in the Albany, NY area. I guess it was not meant to be that I would see David live….YET.
Rascal, you will not regret your decision….just a random thought, since I have practically no hearing in one ear and most arenas have provisions for the hearing-impaired…I wonder what tech get-up would be needed to tap in the the mic feed. I believe they broadcast the mic feed (hope I’m using the correct words) over some frequency and hearing impaired ppl have some hearing device (self provided?)…or something like that (I think I’m thinking Bway theatre)….anyone? If I were to go, I’d certainly try for something like that (BTW, my right ear hears perfectly)….I have been unable to hear DA talking on the most of the utubes. Anything to be able to hear better, above the screaming fangirls/guys. I am only half joking about passing off as a hearing imparied person….
To those who have gone to the concert — can you recommend a list of “stuff” to bring with us? I’m buying some binoculars (ha)… got my camera… but are souvenirs expensive? Do they take cash only, or will they take debit cards, etc etc? Should we consider ear plugs?? (NOT for David, of course, but for the noise in general.. LOL) Are we allowed to have backpacks with us, or would that just be a pain in the hiney to be hauling around?
Does the “cast” sleep in their buses, or do they stay in a hotel for the night? Or do they leave for their next destination immediately after the show?
I just read that they sleep in a hotel for 4 hours (at least at this stop) before packing up and getting on the buses. If they finish the concert at 10-ish? there are meet & greets afterwards and then the idols meet the fans outside, right before getting on the buses. They finished in LA and had to be in San Jose (6hrs drive?) by about 1pm the next day. I’m sure they making use of the bunks beds on the buses.
Rascal. so glad you caved. Can’t wait for your response to actually hearing that voice. I am closer each day to also caving, but family obligations (holiday) are concerning me. I understand randyisgreat comment about not pursuing things that moved me when I was younger and having regrets, so I am getting close… But screaming girls?? I really don’t know if I can handle it!!
Rascal, dang it! You CAVED! I’m smiling so hard my face hurts! And you’re going with Josie! Oh, you two will have a blast, that’s fer sher, and I cannot WAIT for your write ups!
I just watched some fuzzy Sacramento video and it seems like David is really getting used to the wild crowd thing and becoming more and more comfortable with all the craziness and talking to the audience. What a DOLL! You’re gonna have a great time, and we’ll all be THRILLED to read what you have to say about it.
Ah, Rascal, yes. I do see that it would be strength that would get you to ‘cave’ and it is strength that will help you see (hear?) past the screams. I’m so glad that you are going. I hope that you and Josie get a chance to meet David. If he knew all that you’ve done for him — and of your faith in him talent — he’d want to thank you.
“Cool” — I’m just a quiet Kansas girl, but I have always been independent in thought, and my view of coolness has never meshed with that of the world around me. To my mind, David is way cool — LOL — also an independent thinker, and willing to look uncool for the sake of his art. I can’t wait to read your thoughts about this — and about everything Archuleta.
I know the topic here has been David’s artistry in performance but just wanted to share this article from the Salt Lake Tribune in which David talks about his songwriting (sorry if you’ve all seen it already!).
I’ve noticed there are a lot of writers on this blog (me included, a freelancer) and I know you’ll recognize the heart of a true scribe when you read it (to paraphrase: “learn by doing… writing, writing and more writing”):
http://www.sltrib.com/outdoors/ci_9831538
TOfan -- the blog tag-line is “the artistry of David Archuleta.” That is not restricted by any means to just performance.
Yes, the degree of wisdom and self-awareness is particularly evident in this article. Thanks for the link!
Hey, Rascal, count your blessings that you can even go. I will more than likely be out of town when the tour comes to Charlotte (I live in Raleigh, 3 hours away) & even if I could go I couldn’t afford to go alone, I’d need someone to help split the cost of gas & a hotel room & I can’t find anyone. I would never have paid to see an Idol tour but I would pay to see this one. I never evenwatched Idol before, couldn’t care less, but I got hooked on David this season & you can best believe I’m not watching Idol again--TPTB really blew it this year. The more David stood out because of his talent & humility, the more frustrated TPTB became. David drew viewers into the show that had never watched before & what does FOX do? Panic because they had lost about 3 million viewers compared to previous seasons. It didn’t matter to them that AI was still #1 every week & had been for the last 6 years. How ungrateful can you get??? Their ratings would have been lower if it hadn’t been for David & they know it! There was no excuse for the shabby treatment he received at the hands of Idol but I’m sure he learned something from it & the adulation he’s now receiving from the audiences lets him know that winning the show was unnecessary. Most of us “Archies” are upset on principle--yes, he should have won, he was the best singer. But in a way AI complimented him because they knew he would be successful without winning--no way they’re letting go of the golden goose! I was reading a review of the LA concert online (in the LA times) and some poster made a comment on how much he (or she) couldn’t stand David, that they’d love to slap his face a million times & would feel no regret. That kind of remark just makes my blood boil. Why would anyone even think something like that, let alone say it? That’s why I love this site (also Fanblast and MCLady). There’s so much crap out there, it’s nice to say what we want to say about anyone we want--mostly David--but are polite, civilized & openminded. I am so glad I discovered this site, I just wish I had done it sooner, there are so many wonderful insights from David-lovers (I love Hello Gorgeous, Bookaholic, Musicao(?), too many others to list). Didn’t know you had shut down, Rascal! I was wondering why everyone was complaining! No wonder! Once again, if you are able to see the tour, be grateful! Some of us just cannot make it for one reason or another. THANK YOU FOR THIS WEBSITE, I can “love” David all I want & not be embarrassed--I have to let these feelings out! I know he’s from Utah but sometimes I feel he’s an angel sent from heaven to sing for us. What a voice, what a boy, what an angel!
Rascal, I always thought “real” cool was the opposite of conventionally cool. Those are the early ones, the ones that set the trend, often forgotten by the time others join the pack. Having been always late in the game, I’ve often wondered what characteristics people possessed who were able to discover artists or trends long before they became household names. What foresight did they have? Now I know, it’s not foresight at all, but the ability to go with what they love and let the pieces fall where they may. It’s something our later years allow, wisdom?, perhaps?
bigsky, My recommendations for you, earplugs ( save your ears for David), camera with video capability, no backpacks, t shirts can be ordered on line, generally speaking the buses come in about 1:00, FanBlast shout outs start at 12:30, and within an hour or so after the show the idols come out to meet with fans.
While the lazy media portrays the fans as high pitched teeny boppers I didn’t find that to be the case at all. I think it was scriptype who said it best “the roar fades into the background…” it really does. To witness the thunderous roar of appreciation was an unforgettable part of the concert. You can hear the love.
Rascal, let me add my name to the long list of folks welcoming you back. I have been a lurker on this site almost since the beginning and many times have wanted to comment only to find that someone else beat me to it, and far more eloquently than I could have written. Today you had me smiling then laughing out loud. I would gladly meet you and Josie at that bar for fortification before or after the NH concert! I’ll look for your sign and special tshirt… I caved many weeks ago after it became clear that I could not pass up the opportunity to hear David in person. Now I am working on wrestling away the shared family vehicle on that day in August. I will be the grey haired woman in the back with a huge grin on her face, sharing in the outpouring of love and admiration for this remarkable young man.
Thanks archu-dorable for getting me moving, I caved just moments ago and spent most of my paycheck on tickets for MONDAY- OHMYGOSH!!!
Daisychain, my daughter and I will be a couple rows behind you in section 101…there are still tickets available people!
And thanks, bigsky for asking for suggestions on what to bring, I’ll be checking back and making a list! The last really memorable concert I went to was John Denver!!
Maybe we ‘Rascalites’ should meet for a pre-concert dinner somewhere…
Rascal- when you get your tatoo, will you post a picture of it here? I can’t wait to see it!
Well, we ought to meet somehow! I don’t know the e-center very well and am kind of more Utah-valleyish in the restaurants I know. We ought to have someone of you who knows the place designate a meeting time and place.
My 25 year old daughter just said that she and another daughter think they have to find a new hobby for me.
So, I was just over at dafanblast and watched a bad recording of Sacramento, but the hilarious part was when David was trying to talk between SBM and WYSYLM. He couldn’t talk for a full 1 1/2 minutes. Then it was choppy. He’d say something and there would be an eruption of screams and he had to put his other ear monitor back in. Ha ha. So, that’s the strategy, folks. If he doesn’t stay on stage long enough AFTER the set, then you have to give him all your appreciation when he usually talks. He was pretty much floored by Sacramento.
I’m thinking Monday is going to be NUTS. How can we get him to stay on stage after the full set so we can really let him have it? I hope someone -- stage manager or someone -- has the sense to tell him to take some extra time here at home for full bows to the right and left and front and back and repeat it 10 times at the end of his four songs.
#63 elannbo-what are you talking about? what tat? perhaps you’re just being facetious?
Thank you, Janey, for the concert tips!
I was wondering … is anyone else sort of feeling….. well…..SORRY… for the other A.I. cast? I can’t imagine they are anything BUT happy for David… but I wonder if it gets to them just a teenie bit to hear all the screaming for David?
\
I think it’s safe to say that David’s present stage success is making folks wonder who “really” won A.I. (meaning no disrespect to David Cook, I think he’s a great entertainer — just vocally inferior to David)…
Just figured out today that you were back Rascal and I’m delighted! I have always enjoyed your articles on David and am thrilled you are going to the concert with Josie. I too “caved” this week and spent WAY TOO MUCH MONEY on a ticket for the Rosemont, IL show, but what the heck, you only go around once, right? Besides, I’m getting older now….I’m lucky to be able to just make it around once!
Have fun and I look forward to your recap!!
(My heart is racing just writing about seeing him in concert….GEEZ!)
Guh…..I love this kid!!!
Hi Everyone.
I am so excited that I must share with you. Last night I stepped out of my comfort zone and posted on this site. My very first time, ever, posting anywhere. It was an awesome experience for me!
Anyway, I must share with you my excitement that I was able to get tickets for the Tuesday show in SLC. Here I am living only about 20 minutes away from David Archuleta, and I have been just dying to go to the concert but I just couldn’t afford it. Well…a miracle happened and some money arrived from my dear mother to spend on anything just for helping her! It was exactly enough for two tickets on the floor, 10th row. I am ecstatic! I can hardly contain my joy at being able to actually see experience hearing David in person! My 13 year old son is going with me, and we are so excited. (He thinks Kristy Lee Cook is pretty hot!)
On a side note, regarding Rascal’s comments about cool. This is the first year I have really watched AI faithfully, and it is all because of David Archuleta. I remember talking with my sister about him during the season. Her family lives just a few miles from Murray, and she has teenage children. They were not really fans of David, and I just couldn’t understand it. He is our local home town boy, we should be voting for him like crazy and supporting everything he does!! When I told her how something reached out and just grabbed a hold of my soul the first time I heard him sing, she looked at me like I was nuts! Her comment was that her kids know a lot of kids from Murray and that David just wasn’t that “cool” in school. He didn’t hang out with the “cool” crowd. I asked her what constituted the “cool” crowd… the jocks, cheerleaders, etc? I already knew what her answer would be. I told her this boy is a force to be reckoned with. He will be somebody huge in this world, and that he is here for a reason and that reason is to help us (those of us who are lucky to enough to be receptive to him). He is already “cool” beyond what anyone could ever imagine. He is a special angel and a gift to us. Maybe some day she will get it….it is a beautiful thing when you do.
Have a great day everyone!
“Cool” that we’ll be seeing a Rascal piece on the possible death of cool.
The common use of the word implies a dispassionate stance and outward image.
When David describes something as cool I believe he uses the word interchangeably for “neat” or “awesome” the way that I think most of us do. He uses that term for things that he finds emotionally moving as well. (check the interviews) That would be the antithesis of common usage.
When I think “truly cool’ I think of something or someone that stirs me up or hits me deep. I don’t think of a model scowling at me from a magazine ad. I also definitely don’t think of someone who is disinclined to engage any range of emotion in social interaction; that I would deem decidedly “un-cool”.
Look forward to your post Rascal.
I’m curious Lucky Angel, what do your sister’s kids think of him now? And I don’t say that facetiously…I have a teenaged daughter who did not think it was cool to like David Archuleta until she went to the concert with a bunch of her friends. Afterwards, she stayed to get David’s autograph and she came home with a completely different mindset. She’s still not o.d.d. like her mother, but, she does have a new respect for him that she didn’t have when she walked into the HP Pavilion!
I’m so envious that you will be able to experience his hometown concert!
I too am thrilled to hear that Rascal is attending the concert in NH. I can’t wait to read his thoughts after that experience!
Lucky Angel, I read that David was teased in school (at least at the time it happened) about winning Star Search. Kids can be so cruel to their gifted peers. I bet that David is compassionate toward kids who follow their own beat.
Good for you Rascal! I as well can’t wait to see and hear David at Carnegie Hall -- considering the perfect acoustics there, it would be pure heaven at its best. However, I could not pass up this tour, even if I have to deal with all the screaming kids. I’m actually going twice -- once at the Prudential Center in Newark with my 17-year-old daughter, (who likes David but does not have an obsessive personality and is not a screamer), I’m also seeing the show in Long Island with my sister, who is also a huge David fan. I don’t think I have been this excited to see a concert since I was 16 years old, (quite a long time ago), and had tickets to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young -- can’t wait!!
By the way, nothing makes me happier then seeing that your blog is back. It was something I looked forward to and religiously read every day. Thanks again.
OMG Rascal -- I am a long, long time lurker here and when you disappeared it felt like I lost a limb. I love your writing so much. I am so glad that you are back. I am so excited!!! You are fabulous!!!!!! I’m stoked and pumped that you caved ROTFL!!!!!!
#42 Vermeer: Yes, I was sweltering in the 100+ heat last Tuesday. I’m from Marin County; it took nearly two hours for my husband & me to drive down there. We were in SJ all day. Even had an early pizza lunch (and later I read David’s blog in which he said he, Brooke, & Kristy also had an early pizza lunch)! Too bad it wasn’t at the same restaurant.
I’ve posted a blog about the day in San Jose. http://www.myspace.com/minjab
I couldn’t get close to the gate either and my photos weren’t great, although my husband stood on a tall trash container and took a good one of Carly when she jumped up on the gate and another of David. Both are posted on My Space.
I was elated this afternoon when a Fan Blast member Ida posted great photos. And to my complete and utter delight, there was a great photo of David at the metal gate with my LARGE WHITE ENVELOPE under his right arm!!! I can see the address label I used. So I KNOW he did receive the little Top 10 item I wrote for him. Go David!
josie- read comment #31 and you will understand about the tatoo. I think he should get a full sized portrait of David, w/rainbows and maybe even the lyrics to Imagine or Angels. What do you think?
Rascal and Everybody on this blog ETAL
I just enjoy the unabashed discussion of the passion we feel about David and his passion. For those who ever teased David for winning Star Search. I bet there going DOH!!! now. I love how you describe the rebel that David is. It takes being comfortable at being true to ones self despite the run of the mill FOLLOWER mentality of a lot of society. David is not a FOLLOWER and yes that makes him a rebel.
Well all of us male and female older Archie fans who are in this and other David Blogs. WE ARE REBELS. A rebel has courage despite the odds not to have courage. My friends and neighbors think I am odd because of the way I feel about David.
Well I have been known as a Rebel in the past and I see no reason to change my Rebel ways.
I am going to have to change my handle to DAFFE DOT
David Archuleta Fan ForEver
TTFN
OH MY GOSH!!!!! I just got my tickets for the Tulsa show. Second row up, two back from the stage!!!
I need to read back on what to bring, when to show up, etc. etc., etc.
O M G.
I can hardly wait!
Can’t believe I just did that. Me 55 and going to see a 17 year old singer
Of course he isn’t just a singer!
Heavy sigh…..
AND I NEED A T SHIRT!!!
Rascal, since you have caved in and will be…
….planting yourself in the midst of screaming fans (note: I did not say tweens and teens or females),
….wearing a David T-shirt
….carrying the most HUMONGUOS (and self-promoting)
….getting a David tat
….the only thing you now need to get yourself pysched up to do is:
SCREAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!
Lots of Rascal pictures please, and one of Rascal and David together!
Oh, I think the Sacramento 4 minute ovation and screaming were heavenly!! Utah, you better top that
Rascal,
I too, am going to the concert and somebody suggested that I bring ear plugs for when the noise becomes unbearable. But no, I am not bringing any. I will welcome all the screams for David. It would make me feel so proud of him. Although like you, I can’t wait for his solo concert when I can hear just him in a setting more like at the Carnegie Hall. By then he’ll probably grow a lot taller, more handsome, and totally amazing and incredible. I wonder how his voice would soung like 2 years from now? “I’m shaky just thinking about it.” LOL.
kccy… I agree. Just watched the Sacramento concert and again was blown away by David. No earplugs for me. Want to experience the whole thing. Screams and all…I think I will be screaming too
They better have security somewhere close to Rascal. Now that he’s gone all in, I wouldn’t be suprised to see him screaming AND charging the stage!
Earplugs are for the 2 1/2 hours before David comes on. Save your hearing and your head for him. Remove them after Syesha’s third song as she is introducing her “little brother”.
Janey, I am going to have to make a list and check it twice. Sure glad all you early concert goers can give us such great tips! Although, I don’t see any tips for survival AFTER the concert!! …..will be looking for those…………
musicao -- you have 2 IMs awaiting you.
Post concert tips: Prepare to wait a hour or more by the buses or designated fan area with 8x10 glossy or t shirt for David to sign, take more pictures or videos to post here or at FB, have downloaded cds to play on the way home, once home write review and post, next day search FB, notingDavid and rickey’s continually to relive the previous day, put life on hold until cd is released 11/04.
Thank you so much Janey, I will certainly do all of that, I’m sure……someone on the other thread mentioned something about starting an ODD Anonymous. We seriously might have to look into that after the tour is over and we have to WAIT for the CD. I can see us going completely stir-crazy.
Debra! You’re going to the Tulsa show? I’m in Topeka KS and am going to the KCMO show, but I want to go to the Tulsa show, too. Mind if I ask if you are doing any of the pre-show activities like meeting the bus or trying to get to a meet-and-greet? I think I’ll wind up going regardless, but at least I’ll know there’s another David A. fan in the Tulsa crowd.
Thx
Kait… Yes I am planning to leave Fort Smith (Arkansas) early enough to get there by noon if that is early enough. I would dearly love to get his autograph (on my T-shirt) and meet David. What is a meet-and-greet?
Debra,
Great! If you are going early enough to meet the buses, maybe I’ll see you there as that is also my ‘plan.’
A meet-and-greet is a special pass. If you are lucky enough to get one, you can go to a special room before or after the show to talk to the Idols. I have heard that it is hard to get the passes this year… but worth checking out.
I’m not sure if you are going to Tulsa alone, but if you are and want to ‘band together’ for anything, my email is hgnhouse@aol.com.
Kait
Kait,
Thanks, I am bringing a friend, she does not have ODD and I actually had to buy her a ticket. She may yet not go. I have told her that I wanted to go early to do the fangirl stuff and would stay later if I was unsuccessful in getting an autograph early. That would make her cranky I think, so mayhap we will get together there.
Debra
Dang, I caved too, First I signed up for Notingdavid, now I have tickets for Newark. Its a slippery slope to know where this will lead a few months from now when DJ truly emerges. Maybe if I get a pink sparkle phone the tweens wont notice the middle aged guy in the mix…..
AHAHAHA
dcny2 pink sparkle phone, yeah!!! Thats how I’ll fit in. Great idea!
Rascal,
Don’t know if you will see this before you go to the AI show because I am commenting so long after your post, but I have some advice from a middle-aged music teacher: surrender completely to the experience. I went to two shows, one in San Jose and one in Sacramento. I was totally out of my element at the first show. I don’t go to arena shows, and the atmosphere was like a sports game, loud with lots of distractions. I loved seeing David, but I found myself being judgmental about the crazy circus atmosphere. The intimacy of the 3″ youtube performance just wasn’t there and although I enjoyed David’s singing, it didn’t capture me.
For the second show, I decided to completely surrender to the experience. I focused on each performer and was captivated by each, in their own way. When it finally came time for David, my heart was open and ready to enjoy his magic. It was an ecstatic experience.
So go, surrender, and enjoy!
