Prince Hot Shot

From the very beginning of this journey, those who responded to David’s unique talents have been rewarded time and time again–and it hasn’t even been a year. I dare say David is probably as happy to be able to deliver the shared excitement to his fans as he is for his own accomplishments. With many artists of David’s caliber, we see them rise to heights of achievement and acknowledge their success because, well, of course they are where they are because look at what they can do; it makes perfect sense, it doesn’t register as a surprise. But even though we recognize a distinct and captivating power in David’s artistry–from the nuances of his voice to his impeccable musicality to his shrewd song selections–his successes will, I predict, continue to feel like those of an underdog.
Several factors contribute to this fortunate state of affairs, including that he did not win the dubious American Idol crown–a fact I continue to characterize as a major blessing. One of the consequences of David’s meteoric rise to prominence on the the nation’s popular music charts is that those in the public and in the music industry who may have written him off will undoubtedly believe that they now need to take a second look. Had he been the king instead of the prince, the expectation would have been greater and the reaction to success diminished.
But much of why we feel such a kinship with David, why it seems as though we are celebrating the astounding success of someone from our own home and hearth, is due not only to the fact that we have been accompanying him since the start but to the nature of David himself; in particular the remarkable combination of emotional proximity in his music and his grateful, humble nature. It makes for a heart connection between him and his fans that is unlike anything else (the fact that David has the most fanatical fans has very little to do with the fans). Through his work and with his character, David creates a sense of union among the human family that is both wondrously familiar and all-too rare.
Let’s all celebrate.
Oh Rascal, your eloquence is only matched by David’s talent. Thank you for that wonderful description of David’s character, and our reactions to it. I hope that David, one day, is able to understand how truly remarkable he is. This journey we have been on with him is such a blessing. One of the best things I love about when people finally “get” David, is how that moment demonstrates that age, sex, race, etc. does not matter. When it comes to learning something from another person, setting an example, feeling your soul stir for the first time, and making a difference on this planet, we are all the same.
Rascal, you have outdone yourself. Beautifully said. It is beyond wonderful to see David have this day. He has earned it. If I were any more proud, I would turn to vapor and disappear. Well done, D, well done. Here is to the first of many, many achievements.
To witness David’s journey has, is and will continue to be a joy and a rare treasure in life’s journey. I am doing the happy dance today for David–dancing to his music!!
Billboard Hot 100 #2… I am kind of feeling a dream (I had when I first heard “Heaven”) has come true… Now… I think, I have to dream BIG, for David.
i’d love to see David’s reaction. So happy for him, and Rascal , well said as always. You are a treasure as well.
Wonderful summation Rascal! I too believe that David will always view his achievements with a hint of disbelief. This is what makes him humble. And, YES, combined with his innate musicality the combination has stirred something deep inside me and made me re-evaluate and make changes in my life. Thank you for this site, Rascal, for so eloquently bringing us all together to share in all that David is.
FunnyGirl, we will indeed learn from David by his example and he will make a difference in this world. I also believe that he will continue to inspire many others as well to do the same.
So many “firsts” for David, it is a wonder that he is not completely overwhelmed. Just another element to his character, aided, no doubt, by all the support he is receiving from his family and his faith.
Congrats David, well done!
Beautifully put rascal…as always my friend. I have said this many times (and I told this to David when I was lucky enough to meet him in SLC) David has created a heart connection amongst many of us, which in turn has thus created a LIFE connection-friends forever.
See rascal – you’re stuck with me/us.
Rascal, you have this wonderful ability to surprise me in your commentary while simultaneously hitting upon such profound truths that I can only smile and nod.
I love what you said about us David’s fanatical fans having more to do with him than with us. Hadn’t made that connection before but I’m feeling the truth of it.
Some may never ‘get’ David. Some who enjoy his voice may never topple comletely over the edge into ODD. And then there’s us. We have rearranged our lives so that we might congregate, share and enjoy as often as we can. David has caused an embarrassingly large disruption to my life, yet I consider myself very fortunate to be among those who ‘get’ him.
Thank you, Rascal, for being a David Archuleta enabler.
I am deeply moved.Beautyfully said, Rascal !
ha! Kait – David Archuleta ENABLER. Brilliant.
And that’s a good thing – a very, good thing!
Thank-you, Rascal. My appreciation for your insight into David and his future goes way beyond thank-you. Just know that I am truly happy for this site, and everyone who visits here!
The “heart” connection, rascal, as you and others have said: that’s really it, isn’t it? I remember when you wrote that thought-provoking post about his “heart” sign. The boy digs deep!
Just reading through the comments on the last thread, when I offered an explanation for my screen name, it struck me how so many of us zeroed in on David from the first time we saw him on screen.
It was truly a collective “love at first sight,” and that he would return that love in response (i.e. – responding to the requests and demands of his fanbase, truly taking care of us), is why so many of us are willing to take this journey with him and propel him to the top.
I agree too that his coming in as runner-up is truly a blessing. In fact, I’m now thinking that part of the reason he was subjected to so many criticisms (many of which were fabricated) was to offer a “level playing field” for the other contestants. He already, as Simon said, “checked all the right boxes,” he was force to be reckoned with on the show. Off the show, he still is. And he’s such a tour de force just by being himself.
I think of how he said that his performances of “Imagine” (first version) and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” were the main performances when he was just “being himself.” And when he’s doing that, he blows us away! Without even trying.
Can’t wait for the maturity and the fuller self-confidence to set in; then is when he will blow us away on purpose. And he does this without glory-noting or mugging or gliding out fancy footwork. He just smiles that beautiful, sincere smile, opens his gorgeously formed mouth, and hits us with out-of-the-world musical notes.
And to think he hasn’t even begun to peak. I feel very fortunate to have found a community that can boast that “we were there at the beginning,” because I still contend that Jive, the entertainment media, and the as-yet-to-discover David public have no clue what is yet to come.
It’s great to be an Archie/Arch Angel prophet.
Hello Gorgeous – ah the heart connection or as Rascal said he is part of our home and hearth. Can you feel the shift in the energy in David, in the media, in cyberspace since Crush debuted? Such an amazing adventure from all perspectives.
My intensity as a fan has shifted from anxiety to certainty which in no way has diminished my support but mobilized the energy spent on anxiety–much more fun place to be. Being a fan is a strange new experience and I am loving it!
From Billboard – love this:
Rihanna begins a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Disturbia,” but barely fended off the best chart debut in more than 18 months, in the form of David Archuleta’s “Crush.” The track sold 166,000 downloads in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and opens at No. 2.
The last song to open so high was Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” in late January 2007. “Crush” also scores the best opening by an “American Idol” finalist with a song not performed on the show.

Josie, that’s an awesome bit of official news, and so thrilling for us on behalf of David. I still say this is nothing compared to what’s ahead.
rascal – if your last sentence is true, I will be dead long before “what’s ahead” begins.
Congratulations David!! I love the idea someone had on another site about having David sign the Billboard charts at one of his meet and greets instead of a picture of himself (or in addition to a picture). Since he studies those charts, that would be so cool to see his own name up there near the very top.
ps. In answer to Silverfox’s question from the last thread, no, we mormons do not wear crucifixes.
Rascal, your commentary touches me. I feel so honoured to be a fan of David right from the start. I am thankful for this site and to be a part of this great family. Yes, let’s celebrate each and every day.
Rascal there is no doubt that you have the most wonderful command of the english language. You never cease to bring me to tears. Kudos kudos kudos. Your awesome. I finally got the opportunity to see our david in concert when he was here in georgia on the 18th of this month . Omg…………..his whole family was with him and that obviously made him quite happy because he took special care with every song. Angels was so awesome it gave you chills. Tears were streaming down my cheek with “when you say you love me”. Dear lord, this boy truly has a gift. The meet and greet was xld during the day because of larry king, but the idols did come out after the show around 11:30pm. I wasn’t able to talk to david or even get close to him, but a young girl who was in the front of the line handed my shirt i made for the concert and asked him to please sign it for me. I was however, able to see him and everything you guys have said is true. He really is an adorable little guy.what a handsome young man, how i wish i was his age once again. I must say he was the only one that really took time with his fans, he signed everything and anything , high fived all the kids and as always thanked everyone for all their support. Instead of being in a state of euphoria after seeing david in concert i honestly found myself wanting more.david really does have some strange effect on me. The funny thing about this concert was that 85% of the fans were 35yrs and up, even 70yrs. Yes there was the youth of georgia that didn’t stop screaming for the entire 3 hours. Thinking that i was going to be the only old maid in a folding bed turned out to be a big surprise. Everyday, i hit your blog and have never been disappointed. Thanks once again your are awesome
oh lordy, lordy…my heart is so full after reading these posts! I just can’t describe the joy I feel for David and his family. To some who may think this is an overnight success story..that he just appeared at the AI auditions out of the blue one day just to see if he was good enough, nothing could be further from the truth…he has worked so hard at perfecting his talent, his family has made many sacrifices so that David could do what he has done. His siblings love him so much that they have been willing to stay in the background, and I am so happy for that family. I want to thank all of them so much for the sacrifices they have made for David and for allowing us the priviledge of coming into their lives and sharing David with us. I don’t even want to remember my life BD. I am just in awe of his whole family!
The latest news from Fanblast is that they made a last-minute switch in “Crush love interest” for David in his video! Looks like they chose a very beautiful blonde with huge eyes like David’s! The girl who was to play opposite David in the video (Abbey) is now seen in his group of friends. I’ve tried to attach the picture of the new girl here, but I don’t think it’s working. Such an amazingly gorgeous girl though! Wonder what David thinks! Wow! Can’t wait to see this video! Also can’t wait to see David in concert tonight in Tampa!
“The very latest word is that a 15 year old actress named Hagood Coxe, played David’s lead girl in CRUSH in the filming that already took place:
Hagood Coxe is apparently… “THE” girl?!”
I’m out of time and must get ready to leave Orlando for Tampa in just a little while. The weather here in Florida is ATROCIOUS, and I’m hoping there are no accidents enroute. Very slippery roads and high winds!
Kizzi, hope to meet you there!

lovedavid…thanks for that info, I was just curious. I am very interested in LDS now because of David…that was so not like me even six months ago..What’s strange to me is that David really says very little about his Mormon faith that I’ve heard anyway, but he sets such a wonderful example for both young & old, so many of his fans want to know more about his religion.
From Fred Bronson at Billboard:
“So it’s nice to report that the artist who earns Hot Shot Debut honors on this week’s Hot 100 has an obsession with the charts. More accurately, and at the risk of self-aggrandizing, he is obsessed with my Billboard chart books. With his new single entering at No. 2, he has assured himself a place in the next edition of “Billboard’s Hottest Hot 100 Hits,” even if he has to wait a few years to see his current single listed among the top 5000 songs of the rock era.”

Have to agree with Houston Rufus, you have outdone yourself Rascal, what a perfect post. Would still another “Thank You” from one of your loyal readers mean anything? If so ‘Thank you!’ for helping me enjoy & examine Davids’ celebrity!
You pegged my feelings with “why it seems as thought we are celebrating…someone from our own home & hearth…is due to the nature of David himself…” (Or sumpthin’ like that)
Yes, your words are a feast, and I LOVE all the additional comments from the “dishwashing crew”!
David123, thanks so much for that link!! I’ve watched it before, but the lyrics means so much more now after all he’s done, beautiful! This kids’ a gem.
“Through his work and with his character, David creates a sense of union among the human family that is both wondrously familiar and all-too rare.”
I think it was on this blog a while back that we talked about “the brotherhood of man” phenomena. I was thinking about that yesterday as I traveled home from a business trip and received regular text message updates from my wonderful new friends about David’s Billboard status. Standing in the bathroom in the Atlanta airport I really started crying, as much for the good news that I had just received as from the fact that I was sharing it with others around the world who I knew loved David as much as I did and that I didn’t even know a few months ago. Each time I turned on my phone after landing, another message! And when I finally got home and checked up on all things David, more messages in email from people all over the world.
Not only do I personally have a heart and soul connection with David, but also with each of his fans, including those on this blog. There are people I communicate with regularly and have shared things with that I have never met, but I know that when I do, as rascal said, I will be in a familiar place.
So I’m celebrating for David’s deserved and wonderful success and for the love and connections he engenders in people everywhere.
Kisses, hugs and love to all of you! Better yet, I’ll share:

Josie: Thanks for the Billboard post–incredible!
Archu_adorable: I have spent plenty of time checking on all things David on my Blackberry at ATL airport btwn flights–crying, laughing out loud,or smiling like crazy are the usual results. I even met ppl I would never had b/c of my reactions in the airport. My heart had to grow x2 with your post to contain all the love and joy it generated. Hugs, Love and Kisses back (this is how we sign off email to each other in our family–a tradition)
Rascal, “Heart Connection” says it all. I really felt just that the first time I saw David on Idol. That connection grew deeper week after week after week. Now that his journey has finally begun, we are all drawn to cyberspace day after day to watch him grow and blossom and be an amazing success. Kudos David, God Bless!
wow..just came back here after scanning some of the other David fansites…and I’m dizzy from all the buzz & excitement!! It’s hard not to get caught up in it. It’s even harder to sit at my desk without letting out a great big WHOOPEEE!!! without anybody asking, “what’s wrong with her NOW??” It’s hard not to sit here just daydreaming about how David and his family must be feeling and what they’re doing right at this moment. It’s hard not to be sitting here with a big goofy grin like I just won the lottery and am keeping it a secret! I am just sooo happy for David!
Josie – your wish comes true. He is soooo hot !!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG7wVE93CB0
Beautifully said Rascal… you are so right, this “sense of union” is wondrous indeed. Congratulations to David, and to all of us, for being on this journey with him!
The ‘fanatic fans” have been so supportive of David and he truly appreciates them. They also seem very concerned about every poll out there which is fine as it stokes the ODD that has hit us all. However this is just the beginning for David. Crush has just begun its meteor rise and will go beyond all the fans fanatic efforts because it is a solid pop song. David has been underestimated because of his aw shucks and lack of repartee (Cook’s specialty). David is smart-he studied A1 and that’s why he ticked the boxes. He has studied Billboard and knows what makes songs good and why they are good. Trust the Archuletor who does wants to have his fans like what he does but will do what he thinks is right for him at this stage in his life. I am hoping we will have an album a year from him for years and his songs will top the charts many times because he simply is very, very good.
From MTV- (clearly I am not working very effectively today…this week…this month?……OK, this year!):
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1593274/20080821/id_0.jhtml
#32 – thanks for the video clip. I noticed he ditched the suit jacket. I wonder how he managed that. Great video. Thanks for sharing everyone!
silverfoxe – you mentioned that you wanted to more about David’s faith. I am sure there are many mormons who would love to share what we believe with you or anyone else who is interested . . but probably the best place to start is at lds.org.
I am a daily lurker and love this site!
Rascal, I just now noticed Prince Hot Shot! You sure make every one of your words count.
Rascal, so true so true, CHAR-OO!! I got a deadline and shouldn’t even be reading and writing but I am just so happy, proud, and was thinking this morning if David could feel this humongous, I mean huge (see, could never be as eloquent as you, no way) ginormous energy of love coming from all of his fans because we are sharing this incredible feeling of jubilation. That’s all I’m going to say for now.
Hello gorgeous, from the last thread, I like your “following the sun like a helpless little sunflower”, a bit more poetic than my heat seeking missile (ha!) but the intensity is the same.
thanks mamasaun for the info…I’ll check it out. I guess the reason I’m so interested is because all I have read about what others who know David say the same thing…that David has always been the same, always had the special aura, and his faith is one of the main reasons for that. I am not a particularly religious person, but something in David has touched me….like he said when he first saw Tamyra Grey on AI the first season…”WHAT JUST HAPPENED??” I said the same thing when I heard “HEAVEN” and I continue to be amazed.
silverfoxe – I have felt all along that the “aura” that Paula mentioned and the “light” everyone sees in his eyes is because of his faith in Jesus Christ and his desire to be a righteous young man. You mentioned his family . . one of the core beliefs and teachings of our church is to strengthen the family. We have many programs and teachings we follow that are designed to keep the family unit strong, close to each other, and close to the Lord.
I love reading your comments, silverfoxe, I can tell they come from your heart. The people on this sight are amazing and uplifting . . and very insightful. Thanks for all you do!
mamasaun — I too appreciate your comments, particularly about the site and about the nature of its support for David. At times when there has been controversy here around discussions of David’s physical presence, I have received many more private communications from LDS persons in support of my views than in opposition to them, and for that I am grateful.
Although I like to keep things on a decidedly secular track, I recognize that David’s indoctrinated faith is an important part of who he is, and I respect that immensely. As I have said before, I prefer to encourage discussion about spirituality (i.e. personal experience) rather than religion (i.e. institutional experience), and about God rather than, say, Christ (the former is inclusive while the latter may to some seem exclusive).
Genuine compassion at the level David expresses it can feel so much like an elevated plane of spirituality because compassion itself is a dimension of human experience that is almost antithetical to our natural state of self preservation and perpetuation. Compassion tends to be a cultivated trait rather than an organic one. This leads to the natural assumption that David is blessed as a kind of an emotional prophet and I, for one, believe he is. That does not, however, mitigate his status as a human, nor does it absolve him of any of the perceived imperfections that characterize existence in this world. I hope that David’s natural compassion leads him to be highly inclusive in his embrace of his fans and of the world at large. What little universal insight I think I have leads me to believe that he will.
Rascal,
I want to start by saying this whole phenomenon of David Archuleta within myself is something I can not explain. It started when I first laid eyes on him back at the beginning of AI. I am a 48 year old mother and wife, totally busy and fulfilled with my family and work and still CANNOT stop myself from checking in DAILY (OK three to four times daily) to see what our young man is up to today. I have never been this drawn to an artist, ever. He brings me joy and always makes me smile…as simple as that. I HAD to go see him at the concert held near my home in Atlantic City. It was fabulous, as is he…and I know he will continue to bring us all joy for a very long time. Anyone reading this feels the same way, so enough said on the Wonderboy.
As for you, I have to tell you some things…..you are the most exceptional, perceptive writer I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Once I realized I could not live without having David in my life, I began frantically searching for a blog about him with a more, shall we say, mature vibe. It took a little time , but then I found it…Ladies and gentleman…Mr. David Archuleta…from then on you have had me. I want to thank you for describing so eloquently EXACTLY what I feel. What a gift you have.
My friends and family think it is very humorous this fascination I have with David, and for that matter this blog, but for them I can only feel sorry, for Oh what they are missing.
I’m loving life and the fact that I have such glorious music to listen to and such fabulous words to read. Keep up the good work!!!! Thank you! Thank you!
Rascal
Sorry if I said anything I should not have said on your blog. I always worry about doing that because I “wear my heart on my sleeve”. I respect you so much and appreciate reading all that you write about David. I also want to apologize if I offended anyone else out there. I had no intention AT ALL to be exclusive . . I respect people of other faiths and know we can all learn from each other. Love is the universal language and I feel that here as I read everyone’s comments about David. I believe he is a beautiful human being who is exceptional at the art of loving and appreciating all that he has been blessed with. And I too believe that his “reach” is, and will be universal and long-lasting.
rascal, thank you for your reply to mamasaun, as always you expressed what all of us feel about David. I would not have been able to find the right words.
question for you rascal, since it was unfortunate you caught David on a off night when he was obviously not feeling well, are you planning to attend another concert? I would love for you to experience David in all his glory…I would love to see the words you would use to describe that experience. No doubt, you would use words of praise some of us have never heard!
I notice new names every day to your wonderful site. How great is that!
mamasaun — quite the contrary! I thought what you said was wonderful. I only wanted to take the opportunity to re-state my position about how I would prefer discussions to proceed — I did not mean to imply that you had in any way stepped out of bounds, I do not feel that you did.
if you haven’t read this, you should. It’s very touching. http://archuletafanscene.com/
Rascal – Oh Good! I’m so glad you didn’t feel I had offended anyone! I’m an extra sensitive grandma who loves to read what everyone says on this site. My kids tell me that is called “lurking” . . and so I guess that’s what I’m doing . . and they also think I’ve “lost it” because I’ve never been so “obsessed” with a performer before. (I mostly listen to broadway and religious music). Anyway . . thanks for listening to me and letting me mostly “lurk”. If I knew how to make one of those smiley faces like everyone does, I’d do that right now. . . so smiles to everyone!
mamasaun….and smiles to you as well. Again, thank you for the lds.org info.
vermeer#39, yes, intensity is what this fanbase is about!
I was reading this LA Times interview with David, who “shuddered” at such intensity when some of his fans recently targeted one of his female friends with a “deluge of hate mail” because they thought she was dating him:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2008/08/exclusive-inter.html
Oi! To all the younger Archies (and some older ones – let me not stereotype a certain segment), three words: DIAL IT DOWN!
I love how our “most fanatical” fanaticism catapulted David to the top of itunes and the top of the Hot 100 charts, but targeting the people in his life? NOT cool!
On a lighter note, in the same interview, David said his friends think he should hook up with Shawn Johnson (ha ha! They’d make a cute couple – definitely cuter than him and Miley!)
Just got this memo: Larry King is featuring the Idols tonight!
Is Larry King Idoling tonight or tomorrow night. I thought it was Friday
Idols supposedly on Larry King tonight @ 9:00. Apparently they will be on the second segment of the show (?).
Thank you for the link archftw… Wow! what a powerful & moving story.
ah…watching LARRY KING and I kinda don’t think the idols will be on..they are scheduled to be on tomorrow night @ 9-10 then repeat @ 12-1am. Previous info via FOD site…who knows? I’m going to keep watching just in case…
Actually, silverfoxe, they’re on the second segment of the show tonight. They’re spending the first segment discussing the VP choices of Obama and McCain.
Kizzi – thanks for your response to my post back at #32. I did get some interested looks in the airport. If I had been as brave as silverfoxe I would have just played CRUSH loud on my computer while waiting for the next flight!
mamasaun – to make a smiley face – a colon then a right side paragraph line. It will show up as a smiley face when you submit.
Also, for those of other faiths and belief systems, know that David is exceptional even for an LDS young person. While many of the things we love and admire about him are a direct result of his faith and that faith informs all he that he is, he does have an extraordinary gift for ‘loving’ and ‘compassion’ and gratitude, as has been mentioned. This encompasses his amazing ability to be non-judgmental, which is what I personally admire most about him. I believe these qualities would be apparent no matter what religion he embraced, but are perhaps magnified because of his faith.
Yikes…you are right, hellogorgeous!
American Idols are on Larry King Now everyone!
Rascal,
good points. I always emphasize to people that David has a diverse fan base. I am glad that he is personally not preachy about his religion, at least from what I could tell. He does have natural gifts at compassion.
# 47 archftw… that was so powerfull, i cried during the whole reading of it. Just displays the affect David has on us all but to go 10,000 miles and take family members with you!! Oh My. Bless her heart. And I love that David did what we would expect.. What a wonderful story. Definitely a memory she will ahve forever… and hopefully she will see David in Singapore.
sorry, HAVE forever, (hate typos)
Rascal, as always I enjoyed your comments about David’s latest triumph. It has brought me great pleasure to read what you and the other ardent friends of David who post on this site have to say. I consider it an honor and a privilege to find myself in company with such as these. To me David is a very special person and this is only the very beginning of the wonderful things in store for us on David’s journey toward fulfillment of our hopes and dreams for him. For as humble as David is, he would never express a desire for all the wonderful things we wish for him. May his cup run over!
Wow, that Larry King interview was all sorts of awkward and quite hiliarious!
It was great to see David on my TV screen again (even though poor baby got all confused with a question about Ryan Seacrest – seriously, Larry, you can’t interview to save your life!).
If you missed the show, it usually repeats again at midnight EST. I’m sure somebody will you tube it eventually.
Larry King is over…it was ok, but not enough about David. Of course, I’m never satisfied…
I don’t know if it’s just my imagination, but David seems to kind of go “inward” when he’s with the group? I know he gets uncomfortable when talking about himself when the group is being interviewed…is that it?
archu_adorable..bravery is not the ticket when playing CRUSH in public Very loudly…it’s knowing that nobody knows who you are anyway, unless someone videotapes you!
I was thinking too of another change in my life…I now listen to the “pop” radio stations….eek! JB’s, Chris Brown, Miley,….oh my gosh! The things I DO FOR LOVE (OF DAVID).
I’m an “oldies”, jazz, or easy listening kind of person. But if David is doing “pop” and if CRUSH is just the first taste, then by golly, I will listen to the “pop’ stations just to get that thrill every time I hear David on the radio….I LOVE THAT SONG! Hearing it on the radio is a thrill…so after I get my first thrill for the day, I can go back to my ipod.
No, it’s not your imagination, silverfoxe. David does go “inward” because he’s so not self-centered, so he’ll never jockey for position and try to seek out attention in the group. He’ll stay there, be real quiet, and let others do the talking. You did notice he didn’t say a thing until he was asked a direct question. He doesn’t volunteer any information or make any quick remarks to get a soundbite (most of the others, like Carly, Chikize, and Michael Johns did).
I’ve seen him remain quiet just when he’s with one other person (like being real quiet and letting Alexandria Lushington talk since the top 24 week, or when he’s being interviewed alongside Cook when the show was over, so obviously that’s just an expression of David’s natural shyness and selflessness). And if he’s willing to take a backseat with just one other person present, imagine a larger group?
I can imagine him being the kind of student that I would always have to call on to participate in discussions (which I would only do precisely because I would trust that he’d have something intelligent to say).
It was good seeing him tonight though (LOVED that blue t-shirt he was wearing). Can’t wait till he gets to do more solo interviews.
Silverfoxe and Hello Gorgeous…
He does go inward and quiie in a group. I’ve noticed it many times before and mentioned it a couple of times on other sites.
I remember fairly early on in the competition someone on FanBlast asked one of David’s friends in a chat about David’s shyness.
He said he really WASN’T shy at all in small groups of people he knows. He said, however, that when David got in large groups or around people he doesn’t know he got, “really, really quiet and really, really POLITE”. Even his friends know this of him and it was pre-Idol.
Having to deal with fans and press, etc., I think he’s overcome some of that…but he still has a problem “stealing the limelight” from the others, I think. Once the tour is over and he goes out to promote his album I don’t think we’ll see much of that. Look how animated and downright “chatty” he’s been in one-on-one interviews!
This is why I love this site…I always, or almost always ( rascal?) get an answer to my questions and with an interesting observation added. You are right, now that I think back to those instances you mention, hello gorgeous. Thanks.
I understand “the suit” is back and intact..anybody else hear or see anything about that?
I’m just so dang proud of David, I’ve no words to describe it adequately. But…I don’t have to. Rascal takes care of that for me, thank you very much.
Rascal it seems that I thank you everytime I write something on this thread. You always write with so much passion and understanding of David that I am moved almost as much by you as I am David. David truley is an example of who we all should be. I am so excited to be a part of his journey even if it is only in cyber space. I will follow his career forever.
Also I found this on another site. Didn’t know if you would be interested but “Crush” is #16 on the Global Track Chart I think that is pretty cool. Here is the link:
http://www.mediatraffic.de/tracks.htm
Shucks gemzone01, I was just going to tell everyone the great news about David at #16 in the world! I noticed how many weeks it took the other songs to climb into their position. Hopefully David will keep going up and staying at #1 for a very long time.
Thanks arhu_adorable, I always wondered how to make smileys too.
oh yeah, I was going to mention that David’s friend Jon “Do-knock” Cruz (David sang Happy Birthday to his mother on the youtube video)
and his team “Super Cr3w” just won MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew”. congratulations to them. Ok, sorry, now back to your regularly scheduled program……
Congratulations to David on another success! Thanks Rascal for an eloquent article. I agree that the heart connection between David and his fans is a rare and precious thing. I am grateful to be part of that circle. He is, as his dad said, “just a kid who likes to sing,” but his beaming, joyful presence lifts my spirits daily. As I told him at the barricades, “Whatever you choose to do, you’ll make us proud!”
If I had the chance to speak with David quietly, I would tell him that as a musician and as a teacher, I live for the moments of “connection.” I would tell him that I am grateful for his ability to go to the core of music and connect hearts and connect souls. It is amazing to me that people who mostly listen to classical music (myself) or mostly listen to jazz or country or whatever, can experience that transcendent moment through his artistry. Thank you David.
Wow, Rascal, what beautiful words. Here it is nearly 2 a.m., and I am up catching up on all the wonderful things happening to David and now reading this blog! When I read your comments about how David has brought us all together and caused a heart connection, I was moved to tears. I cannot believe that a boy of 17 has changed my life so drastically.
One part of my life is in such turmoil right now that it is more than I can bear. It involves one of my children, and the pain and grief that our family is suffering right now seems so overwhelming that some days it is all I can do to even try to get through the day. Yet, I have David and his beautiful voice and his most precious soul to help me get through each day. I have mentioned before that I was touched by David’s magnificent spirit when he sang The Long and Winding Road. I still get tingling up my arms and down my spine when I remember that experience. I will never, ever get over that day when David reawakened my spirit.
I truly have made heart connections with people I don’t even know, and this is all because of David Archuleta. I care deeply about my new found “David family,” and I cannot imagine a day going by without these wonderful people. It really brings me to tears to think about how this has all come about. We live in a world where people don’t really connect with one another anymore. I look at my neighborhood, and I feel sad that I don’t even know so many of my neighbors. I feel sorrow for my children that the world has come to this. The neighborhood I grew up in was so very close. I remember an episode from The Wonder Years (a wonderful show by the way), where the narrator is talking at the beginning of the show about his neighborhood and how everyone knew everyone, you knew your friend’s home as well as your own, you felt as loved and welcomed at a neighbor’s home as you did your own—because these were the wonder years! That profoundly affected me then and still does to this day. David has caused so many people to come together in a common bond, because we are all drawn to him. He emits such a powerful, magnetic force that when caught up in it you really can do nothing more than just go with it. I honestly to this day feel that David is something special and has been put here in our lives for a reason. I know for my own self, it has been my only salvation to listen to his beautiful voice and look at that most precious face. I feel like I am gushing about one of my own children, and in a way I do feel some sort of maternal pride towards him.
I know I am rambling on and on, and you are all probably thinking I am some crazy person here. I really am not. I am just going through something in my life with my son right now that I am just not equipped to deal with. I feel so all alone at times and unsure of what I should do. Now, however, I have some new friends that I can laugh with, cry with, and talk with every single day to help me get through my struggles. It is amazing to me that I feel such love and devotion to total strangers, but it is that heart connection and loyalty brought about because of our love of David.
Thank you, David, for sharing your gift with all of us. If not for you and that magical night back in February when I randomly saw you singing Shop Around, I don’t know where I would be today. I was hooked the first time I saw you and heard you sing! I adore you, and even more I adore the wonderful, special friends you have brought into my life. I will be eternally grateful to you, and you will never even know it!
Lucky Angel – I’m sorry for your pain. I pray that you receive the strength and guidence to help you and your family through this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Dear Rascal,
Thank you for lyrically expressing what David’s fans round the feel. If that is not a prime sample of heart connection, I do not know what else is!
Dear FunnyGirl,
When you wrote, “One of the best things I love about when people finally “get” David, is how that moment demonstrates that age, sex, race, etc. does not matter…., I just finished reading this entry from Marc from one of fanblast thread and it touched me to the core:
I was lucky enough to score floor seats only a few rows from the stage last night for the Sunrise Fl. Concert.
I am tearing up right now; very objectively David Archuleta is the most brilliant artist of this generation and who knows of how many. There is no other voice like our David’s, God has blessed him with something beyond a gift, I don’t know if there is even a word for it. I will tell you from the first note to the last the audience was spellbound.
First up, Angels- as soon as the piano came up in a cloud of fog, I noticed…the suit was gone! I had to do a double take. Remember I am about 10 feet from the stage and…David was breathtaking, captivating, spellbinding, mesmerizing. Honestly there are no words. He puts his whole being into every performance, there has never been anything like it. He is a gift a true gift that God has given us, I could not control myself, a woman was sitting right in front of me who was there for Cook. We spoke about the idols before the concert began and I told her I was there for our David. After David sang Angels she turned to me and with tears in her eyes she said, I see what you were saying.
You can read the rest of his sharing at #156: http://davidarchuletafanblast.com/2008/08/21/fans-celebrate-number-2-chart/#comments
It is a glorious day!!!
jackryan4DA,
Look’s like marc had a “WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!? night in Sunrise, and he will never be the same!
Hey how cool is this – “Crush” is #16 on the Global Track Chart, sandwitched between two of David’s favorite artists (Jason Mraz and Sara Bareilles).:]
this is really great! i cant believe it! i seriously thought the best it was going to get was like #20. i had NO IDEA it would do this well. when the archies were like “straight to #1!” i was thinking “they need to shut up- thats impossible!” i guess i prepared for the worst. but WOW!
on the other hand, rascal, i really wanna express my frustrations at the ppl who keep saying “he trumped cook” or “we know who the real winner is” i wish archie could have success without us referring to cook. besides, didnt cook have like 14 songs on billboard? just sayin. i just dont want us to be bragging (and yes, alot of archies on the net are bragging, not celebrating- big difference). because for all we know, cook will have even greater success and break more records.
personally, my loyalties lie w/ archie (LOVEHIM, LOVEHIM, LOVEHIM!). but in all honesty, i think david accomplishing this is only gonna fuel all the david cook fans (and archuhaters) to get david cook’s single to be #1- and i think they will succeed. plus, especially since cook is the winner he HAS to outsell archie. his fans are gonna pull out all the stops- i heard rumours about them buying disturbia to stop crush from being #1. thank goodness our david doesnt have to worry about outselling anyone (thats why i, like u, was relieved when he didnt win)
i dont wanna rain on the parade or anything- because i am so happy about this, but i just dont want us to get carried away. he has accomplished a very big thing, but it was really just his fanbase from idol that got him there. what he needs now, is fans outside the idol bubble to start liking him and enjoying his music. thats whats really gonna take him to the top.
thanks for the article rascal. always nice to hear what u have to say. and THANK YOU for not being over the top. i liked how u see how great this is, but u didnt make it out like hes the king of the world. its like u say what i wanna say, but i, unlike u, am a horrible writer. so thanks.
djasgirl — Thanks for the kind comments and, on the contrary, I don’t think you are a horrible writer at all. Not everyone is able to convey personality in writing and you certainly do–that’s a gift. Despite the abominations of texting shortcuts (easily rectified), I think your communication skills show promise.
I’m not sure how to evaluate the claim that it is primarily the core fan base that has catapulted Archie to the top of the charts. Certainly other artists, Idols in particular, have had fan bases that are just as large if not larger (if perhaps not quite as rabid), and their efforts were not enough to get their guys to anywhere near the same place. I would also suggest that the multiple purchasers and repeat song-requesters represent a considerably smaller sub-set of the core fan base, and would be unlikely to ‘move the needle’ to any significant degree.
Where I do think the core fan base may play a significant role is in their influence on the wider market. Few core Archies are inclined to keep their obsession private, and so their proselytizing on Archie’s behalf–in school, at work, among family and friends–could very likely cause a bump in interest and in sales.
A core fan base is like an extension of the PR machine. It is not directly responsible for moving product, but can have a very powerful indirect effect. At the end of the day, it is the product that counts. The most rabid fan base is only going to be able to get the wider market’s attention–it won’t be able to make them buy if the product doesn’t pay off.
Why David could climb up to #2, the credit goes to his rabid friends. It’s impossible for him to go this far if they were not there. There are always pros and cons, I would concentrate on their pros. And some of them might be too frustrated of the whole AI competition, and just can’t let go, please forgive them.
MYYK — I think the point that djasgirl was making is that if David’s chart success is based to a significant degree on the core fan base, then it ultimately doesn’t mean as much, and presents more challenges for David in the future. In other words, David’s success in the market, especially going forward, will depend on his ability to reach audiences beyond the core fan base.
My argument is not that the core fan base has not been incredibly effective, but that I believe David is already reaching wider audiences because the impact of the core fan base has probably been more indirect. That’s better news for David than if his entire success so far is based only on the rabid fans alone.
I’ll buy that the core fan base got him to the top spot that first day or two….but NO WAY they kept him there for a full week. That has to be new fans or casual fans and buyers that saw him at the top of the iTunes chart and decided to give it a try.
What the core fans did was help the airplay numbers in the areas that were playing the song so there was more exposure and voting in polls to keep his name there for everyone to see. If you keep seeing a persons name over and over again, especially in the top spot…you ARE going to click on it…no doubt….just out of curiosity. I can’t tell you how many artists I’ve discovered that way….or by word of mouth.
And, once they give him a listen….then that’s all David’s doing….because if they click on his name and give a listen and he “sucks” then NO fanbase will get you to buy no matter what they do or say Just think of the core fan base as Evangilists….they just get your attention and are “bringers of good news”. LOL!
I agree, Rascal, and juliebug. I’ve always felt that David’s power is such that, once a listener “really listens” to him singing a song he believes in, BAM, he’s got ‘em.
And thousands of people who may have attended the A.I. tour to see one of the 9 others, undoubtedly were blown away (and “converted”) by seeing and hearing David live and, as juliebug points out, that word of mouth is priceless.
World domination is imminent, and I hope our David is ready for it!
Lucky Angel – I am also going through some challenges in my life that are close to breaking me, but when I too saw David for the first time when he sang Shop Around all I could say to my husband was WOW. Then he sang Imagine. His first comments about wanting to communicate to his audience via his songs is what made me do an internal switch. He made me want to reach out to others as opposed to looking inwards. In the case of my son, I started to try to understand how he was thinking and feeling as opposed to just concentrating on my reactions to what he is doing with his life. I hope this example makes some kind of sense.
One of the things that David has said more than once in interviews, and has really helped me is “if something has happened or is happening – it is meant to”. Also growing up my parents often said that God does not ever give us anything to deal with that we cannot handle.
jachryan4DA/Marc – David is changing our world isn’t he; one song at a time, one soul at a time.
juliebug – I definitely agree!
Rascal – thanks AGAIN for this site which provides us the opportunity to provide love and support to fellow e-David family memebers. I take strength from you all.
Lucky Angel and Awestruck, we share a common worry about our sons… interesting. I sometimes think that is one of the factors that draws me to David, that he too is a teenaged boy…and, when he isn’t singing, is just that. He isn’t like one of those teen celebs who has had to grow up too fast…he is, at least so far, staying very true to himself and his family. I think his strong faith, and, at least to me even more importantly, strong character, holds him in good stead. I just pray that my son will find the same strength in himself to stay on a healthy path going forward. David’s example gives me hope.
#79 “…the abominations of texting shortcuts…” I’m all lol & even rotfl @ that 1. (Or as David would say,”ha ha.”)
Was at St Pete Forum last night. Got to meet Jeff briefly–what a great guy. David’s set as always was powerful–he has a new awareness in his eyes (I was 2 rows from stage) and this is my 4th and final AI concert (yes I have ODD bad). Jacket was back on (drat!). Crowd was fun and interactive. Very loud for David. Syesha had her Dad there and the crowd was very interactive and appreciative during her set. PDSTM was so fun and all the idols played around. When Cook went to one knee for David, he tried to raise Cook up by the arm – very funn and it cracked Cook up.
Watched the crowd more (since my 4th show) to see how they intereacted with each set. And, yes, they did show David the love and there were so many ppl (not just the young ones) screaming “David I love you.”
Had my granddaughter next to me and oh my, the shrieking tween she turned into and she yelled over and over “David I love you.” It was a blast to have someone as over the top as I next to me during David’s set–haha. My other granddaughter had another Idol favorite but once she attended the concert she and her best friend who came with us are now David fans–woohoo! Of course, their reasons had to do with looks (he so cute) and they too were screaming “David I love you” during his set. I was surrounded by screaming tweens and I was truly in my element–lol.
Heart, sorry we didn’t meet up.
Sorry if this has already been posted, but just wanted to share — somehow “Master and Commander” comes to mind — dare you not to smile!

The kingdom is at hand:

#87 – “He has a new awareness in his eyes” – Yep!
89# oh my gosh! That has to be THE BEST photo of David performing I have ever seen….absolutely breathtaking cause I’m sitting here breathless! Just gorgeous!
Are we sure this is the same DAVID ARCHULETA who was on Larry King on TV last night?
UNBELIEVABLE! Somebody explain how he can change from a shy young boy to this confident
performer just by stepping on a stage…..wonder what surprises we have in store on his video..can
he act as well as sing. I’m betting Yes!
#89 In regards to that picture, I’m going to amend the title of a previous post to read “ODD Causes Smoking.”
#89 archftw: Lordy loo, David looks fabulous in that photo. Thanks for sharing. This is a young man in charge of the stage. Love it!
#91 silverfoxe: As to David’s different personality on the the Larry King interview: I have chosen to not even watch the interview, even though I have watched and read every possible interview that involves David. King is an airhead who doesn’t respect his guests enough to even do any preparation or research for his interviews. (By the way – Hi!!!)
Djasgirl on #76 – I am with you feeling iffy about Archies “bragging instead of celebrating” David’s current triumph. I do not mind if the critics or media compare his outstanding showing with Cook’s. But when rejoinders come from Archies, I think that can be counter productive. I hope we keep in mind that a lot of Arch Angels are Cookies, too. What’s more, it is not uncommon to find die-hard Cookies going out of their way to support David either by coming to David sites to congratulate him. I would even venture that they bouught Crush, too. We do not want to alienate them at this point, do we? Can we not be magnanimous in victory? Surely this is a trait modeled by our idol, right?
That photo is hot. I wonder if it is residual from his “Crush” video although I have seen that intense look before. I watched the Larry King interview and thought he did not put much thought into the same tired old questions. I of course was primarily interested in David and love anytime I can hear anything from him. I thought he did well. He does not have the gift of quick wit like some of the others but what he says is always so sincere. He does not work to be the center of attention although that blue shirt did catch my eye. One thing did come through for all of them. The Idols show itself was hard on them but they all are enjoying the tour.
I am happy to see David on TV anytime so it’s great the idols were on Larry King show, but because it wasn’t a great interview (tired old questions and questions asked randomly, questions that do not necessarily pertain to the idol he is asking for the most part and virtually no feedback to the answers given) I kind of feel bad for the fans who missed out on meeting them before the show. If LK was going to take their time with the fans away from them, you would think he could make a better job of making a much more interesting and worthwhile show. Too bad.
#76 & 94..very valid points. I just read an article on New York Entertainment I found a little troubling. I’m shaking my head as I’m reading all the accolades for David which are deserved & I love that, but at the same time the article really puts down Cook and how America admits ‘mistake’. The article goes on to say David’s album will easily outsell Cook’s. Even though I agree David should have won based on talent alone, and yes he is breaking records now and he will continue his meteoric rise, I don’t understand why they ( writers) can’t praise David or Cook without tearing down the other. The competition is over. These types of articles are keeping the competition alive & well. I personally may purchase Cook’s album too if I like it. I believe it will do very well. My hope of course, is that David WILL OUTSELL all the other artists out there, not just Cook’s. I guess I may be thinking back to the night before the AI finale…David scored a KNOCKOUT per Simon, and there were just no words to describe how GOOD David was that night…..and look what happened. Whether it was a ”blessing” he didn’t win is a matter of opinion, because David wanted to win, he gave it his all and all the predictions fell flat. We, his fans were devastated, some of us are still not over it…but David is. David really likes and admires Cook and Cook likes David too. It would be a shame if their friendship suffers because of rabid fans on both sides…Cook has them too…and articles like that just fan the flames.
Sorry.. I just had to vent.
And hi back to ya davidfanLIZ
Folks, Vulture at NYMag is not entirely what it seems. My understanding is that their entire season’s worth of Archie devotion and Cook castration was all done with tongue planted firmly in cheek.
I just noticed a few minutes ago that Crush came in at #16 on the Global Music Chart. Isn’t that the greatest? And Silverfoxe, it would be a crying shame if the Davids’ friendship was harmed by rabid fans. Some very hurtful, hateful things have been said about Archie by Cook’s fans and it cut me to the quick to read them. And now it seems that Archie has rabid fans too. These 2 young men have formed a very special friendship and it would be horrid if rude fans do manage to mar it.
Tongue in cheek or not…..it wasn’t necessary. Just my opinion.
Folks, Vulture’s over-the-top pro-David/anti-Cook column from NY Magazine is not to be taken seriously at all. I think you’d have to understand the nuances, subtleties, and biting wit to get why the David vs. David comparison is hilarious (and something I think even Cook would burst out laughing at himself).
Silverfoxe, I invite you to go through the Vulture archives when he was writing about David the whole AI season (his “pie charts” alone are comedy gold!).
hello gorgeous & rascal….went back & read the Vulture archives and ok, you are correct and I smacked myself over the head….The pie charts were funny, yes. Thanks. But…..
I was not the only one who took that particular article seriously, so I don’t feel so stupid…maybe just supremely silly. Hey, but that’s ok, like Cook, I can & do laugh at myself often!
HAVE A GOOD NIGHT ALL, SWEET DREAMS!
And here is his reaction to finding out he was #2 on billboard. THanks to Fran for getting this on video and posting it at fansofdavid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHHNcDDzwto
Silverfoxe – though this is history already, I’d like to share my take on David’s performance finale night which differs from what you stated. Yes DA wanted to win but my interpretation was that, on finale night, he was not fighting for a title. He was fighting for his reputation as an artist. That despite all the shenanigans and manipulations done, he would come out as a worthy opponent, not some immature, near-breaking-point, stuttering kid totally unprepared for the demands of being an Idol champ.
He saw the writings on the wall early on. Made peace with it. I noticed a major shift in his demeanor with the judges sometime around Top3 week.
IMO, at finale night, he wasn’t killing it for the votes but for the respect which he should not have been and which he can no longer be denied – he made sure of that. And boy did he claim it and more!
Gifted and with character to boot, he is even wise beyond his years. Idol personified.
Unfortunately, the competition between him and Cook will be forced upon us again come November if the simultaneous launching of the albums of the 2 Davids pushes through. Am afraid the producers are salivating on doing another 50cents-Kanye album showdown (Fall 2007) to hike sales.
Sorry – that should have been 50cent — not cents. Haha
This is just too much. I was one of the probably hundreds of older women who had the pleasure of telling David that I loved “Crush.” Now David is crediting us with helping him get to the Hot 100. From an Access Hollywood interview, August 22: “Moms [are] saying, ‘I love your song!’” David revealed to Access Hollywood‘s Billy Bush in an interview for “The Billy Bush Show.”
Too cool!
I just heard the interview on the Bill Bush Show. I was getting an MRI done and I told them to turn that up, it’s DAVID! How cool is that. That was the first time I heard Crush on the radio! I’m so excited for David!
Here’s the link….
http://www.billybushshow.com/interviews?pid=6483
He was hoping for a top 30????
#93 davidfanLIZ, couldn’t agree with you more on Larry King. My feeling is he is self-centred and I don’t like to watch his show, because I never feel comfortable watching him interviewing his guests. Its like, he is the STAR himself and he really don’t care about the answers to his questions, it is very robotic. I am surprised that a host of his standing is so amateurish in his interaction with his guests. I watched this time because David James was there.
#108 juliebug, thank you for the link to Billy Bush interview with David. David was mature and self-assured in this conversation. I was floored when he intercepted and said “He couldn’t really be thrown out since I needed a guardian” when Jeff was asked about the controversy during AI and became too emotional to give a quick answer. I could feel this strong love David has for his father just by listening to David’s giggles after he had said those words.
David, you touch my heart with every word delivered whether through singing or speech. Your bring joy to me with your smile and humbled me with your humility. You never take credit for yourself. Knowing you and feeling you is such a blessing.
jackryan4DA – #104 – I like this analysis. I believe David’s honor is indeed extremely important to him and it’s exciting to think that part of what he wanted to deliver as a final salvo in that competition was an unambiguous defense of that honor.
Re: LKL – I didn’t think David did badly in the interview at all. I thought he answered the questions thoughtfully. King is not a warm fuzzy–haha. Regarding the Ryan Secrest question, I did’t even think of the PopTart/Guitar Hero guys as the hosts so I followed David’s answer perfectly and had to stretch to think of the PopTart/Guitar Hero guys as “hosts.” One question I did have was when Cook referred to the reason he got his eye tatoo at first he said it was b/c of Archie then he said personal reasons. I know he was teasing David but I WANT to conclude he was giving David some type of compliment.
jackryan4DA – I had similar thoughts once I recovered from the fact that he didn’t win. He was so content in interviews post Finale. Additionally, I thought his Final 2 performances were for his fans as he said in subsequent interviews about those performances that he felt he owed it to his fans to give it his all as they got him there. Again, the heart connection.
Kizzi,
Maybe the tattoo of the eye is to remind him to keep an eye on David because if he’s not watchful David could and is stealing his thunder -lol!
I agree with everyone’s comments that David’s perfromance on Finale Night was a redemption of his reputation and an audition of sorts for the world beyond American Idol. I’m sure he knew that the odds were stacked against him because two of the judges as well as the producers seemed to be openly supporting Cook. The end result – Cook won BUT so did David because everyone now knew that he is a force to be reckoned with when given an opportunity to perform without restrictions.
joymus – like your speculation about the eye tatoo – haha
Jack Ryan, you said it all.
On another note, I can certainly see why David loves Sara Bareilles ~ this is fast becoming one of my favorite songs, and I can only thank David for encouraging me to listen to her music!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_U6iSAn_fY
Sorry if I’m interrupting here, but I’ve just listened to this song 3 times because it reminds me of David in part.
Definitely agree with jack ryan, joymus, and others about David’s finale performances. Still get choked up with pride every time I watch them. If he did all that just to make his fans proud, boy did he ever!
Speaking of getting choked up, was Jeff on the verge of tears in that Billy Bush radio interview? (thanks for the link juliebug #108)
What a sensitive man (who obviously raised a sensitive boy). And how sad that this is still such a sore spot (grrr, this is yet another reason I can’t watch Idol next year – this “scandal” was their creation, and Jeff and David did not deserve that!).
I will never understand why Jeff and David were targeted in such a negative way (or why the show’s producers allowed the negative publicity to escalate without once – not once! – addressing it on the show to clear the air). Many people do believe that Jeff cost David the AI win, which is truly unfair.
I mean, don’t get me wrong: I’m definitely agreeing with everyone else here that David’s runner-up standing is a blessing in disguise. But what happened to his dad was completely unnecessary.
davidfanLIZ#106 – okay, all you “Moms,” you might want to keep your David “crush” a secret from your kids. The last thing David’s peers want to hear is that their parents like the same music that they do! ha ha
#107 ErinH0611: How cool to hear the Billy Bush interview in such a random way. Hope all is well with you! I send you all my best wishes!
#114 Heart: I just bought “Little Voices” by Sara Bareilles. I had to see why David loves her so much.
#116 hello gorgeous: My issue is not my kids, they are grown and out of the house. My issue is whether or not to put my signed picture of David Archuleta in my music classroom at school. Would my 5th graders think it was cool, or would they hate it that “their” idol was also loved by their teacher????
Good question, davidfanLIZ; what are 5th graders, “tweens”? I haven’t yet figured out how tweens operate (compared to teens).
See, if you were teaching high schoolers, I would definitely say that your students would decide your signed picture of David was totally “uncool.” I don’t know about 10 and 11 year olds, though. Are they at that age already where they don’t want to be associated things their parents and teachers like?
#117, Erin ~ I’m having fun investigating Sara (space) Bareilles, and more & more, I’m seeing why David loves her! I can see him loving the fun she has in her videos ~ first Love Song, now this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cGQoPmefyA
But my favorite is still Gravity!
#119 Heart: Thanks for the video links!
#118 hello gorgeous: 5th graders are just beginning to differentiate themselves from their parents. Remember the David interview where he says that when he was 10, 11, he just listened to the music that his mom and dad listened to, before he got obsessed by Tamyra Gray? That’s mostly where my students are. I love the image of an 11 year old David suddenly getting chills from listening to that music.
“What… just…. happened?”
There are millions of kids that branch out to new kinds of music at that age, but for David, this was an event that changed his life. It’s like he had a huge resonating chamber inside of him and this music set off a rippling vibration. His huge soul vibrated with the profound connection of the music.
I love this kid!
#121, DavidfanLiz ~ You’re welcome. I just find myself wanting to listen to eveything with David’s ear these days! Yes, I love this kid too ~ so much ~ tho I can’t express it as well as many do here ~ but it’s there, in my heart and on my sleeve for all the world to see ~ it’s over the top, and there’s no escaping it ~ so I’m enjoying every minute!
Here’s yet another touching comment from David, this time in the Chicago Tribune:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-archuletaaug23,0,1844545.story
To #116 Hello Gorgeous. I see what you mean. I know in my family my kids really were put off by my obsession with all things David. But that stopped the day I bought my daughter her own copy of Crush. As I watched AI 7 this year, my interest in David AND my interest in all music increased. I bought an ipod and loaded it with David’s songs and youtube videos but I also loaded with lots of other music, mostly given to me by my daughter (Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Daughtry, dance stuff). When my 19 year old heard Crush, she nodded in concurrence. It’s like… she got it. And I acknowledge the music she gives me (or suggests that I buy) that I like. Pretty cool what can happen.
Heart,
Thanks for the link to “Gravity.” Wow, that is really powerful. I think I’m going to have to buy her album too. The lyrics to “Fairytale” are genius and after listening to “Love Song” more carefully in the car the other day and knowing it’s a message to her record label– can our boy pick ‘em or can our boy pick ‘em? I can’t count on two hands all the new music he, and AI have introduced me to this year. It’s just really cool.
I was wondering if Lupe is in fact going to accompany David for the rest of the tour. I know she was at the video shoot and the Sunrise and Tampa concerts but obviously Jeff is still with him too. I was looking forward to seeing her (in videotapes) and her reaction to the effect David has on his fans. So many people have so many nice things to say about Jeff and I’m sure many of people want to know more about David’s mom, who he specifically said was one of his “American Idols” in the tour program book. David is who he is because of both parents. She is a very beautiful, loving mom and if I had the choice of meeting Jeff or Lupe, I would want to meet Lupe. I would love to have a conversation in Spanish with her. That would be awesome. Anyway, I was hoping someone knew or heard something.
I don’t think she is joining him for the rest of the tour, just for the stops where she had family. At least that’s what I gathered from reading various sources.
Aw, that’s too bad, but I can understand mom Lupe is needed at home with the rest of the kids. And wow, brother Daniel can play the guitar really well. Sings too although not like Big Brother.
I hope S a r a space B a r e i l l e s knows that because of David, she has alot of new fans who may never have even listened to her if not for David. David just has to mention a someone’s name and suddenly everyone wants to know more about that person, ie…the late Eva Cassidy. who is now one of my favorites. CRAZY, isn’t it?
silverfoxe, the CHA-RUTH of the matter is, it’s CRA-ZEH!
archu_adorable…..yeah, yeah…AIN’T IT THE CHA-RUTH! ha ha ha ha!
OUR PRINCE EVEN HAS SOME OF US GOING SO CRA-ZEH!
NOW WE HAVE A NEW LANGUAGE COURTESY OF DAVID!
64. silverfoxe – where do you live, that you are so lucky to hear David’s song on the radio? I have been requesting it ever since it came out on the 12th, here in Portland OR, and it has not been played once yet. Today I called the dj and asked why they weren’t playing it. He hadn’t heard of a “David Archuleta”–I had to spell it for him. GAH!!!!!!!!! (Now I have also written to their music director, to see what’s up with THAT.)
I am curious, because I’ve heard intimations that his single is not yet “fully released”, so that AI and DC won’t be further embarassed by being left in the dust of DA’s rocket ship to the stars. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least. I’ll let you know what the station’s music director has to say, if I hear from him. In the meantime, whoa!!! GO DAVID!, #2 on the Hot 100, and that’s without airplay on all the stations where it should be!! OMG, gonna be so huge!
But curious, here, would like to know if there are any other markets in which David’s song is not being played?
Won’t be practical for gorgeous mommy Lupe to join the tour cos she would have to “park” with the girls’ bus. Me thinks the guardian’s duty is more needed when all the boys are “parked” inside the bus, if you get what I mean hehe. Not that David will allow it given his strong character, but at his age, he is still corruptible. Hence the guardianship.
I also think it is simply genius for Lupe to be there during the shoot. After all, it is about a “crush”. It will be David’s 1st time to be exposed in a more intimate and focused setting on girls his age. I can imagine he may need Lupe’s guidance more in this regard. Also, having the boy’s mother around is a pretty good foil for any girl thinking of sumthin’ sumthin’. Haha, simply genius!
Rascal/Kizzi/Heart/Joymus/HelloGrogeous – am glad you like my take on the finale thank you! The other side of my speculation is that Cook of course knew what was happening. And having his own pride, he delivered a lackluster performance – the only way at that point to express his displeasure on how the title was being served to him. And that was why Simon was so pissed. That was why he had to call a knockout – a reliable trick to rally the public for Cook. And the wink? It was Simon’s signal that he will make up for crucifying Cook that night. We all know how he made up for it.
But David James wrapped it up beautifully for us: “things happen… they are supposed to happen that way…” Sigh… wisdom beyond his years. Thank you Jeff and Lupe for DJMA!
Not that I really want to be negative, but I want to register my agreement with hello gorgeous’ #115 comment in that I, too, had made the decision, sometime during the final weeks of this past AI season, to give it a miss next year, except for when they feature David as a guest, which is likely to happen. I will count on David’s fan sites to keep me posted on when he will appear. I have very little interest in ever hearing what Simon has to say either after his back tracking on the final night of AI. I was shocked to see the lack of integrity in this supposed “most honest” judge. I will try to remember though that AI did bring David to us, but that’s all.
#132..I have a story about the first time I heard “CRUSH” on the radio here in LOUISVILLE KY. The day after the TCA aired on tv, the radio station 99.7 had “guess who this celebrity is” and they played a snippet of CRUSH”. I was putting on makeup, getting ready for work and as soon as I heard it, dove across my bed for the phone and kept dialing til I got through. I was so dang excited that I could barely speak! I told them it was DAVID ARCHULETA singing his new single CRUSH! The 2 dj’s were laughing at me cause I kept saying play it, play it, play it…keep the prize I won…I just want to hear it,that’s prize enough! They thought I was so “cute”. Anyway, they played it and I stood there crying like a fool. My son came running into my room wanting to know what the heck happened…when I told him he looked at me,shook his head and laughed. I was ecstatic, and acted SUPREMELY SILLY to my grown son! When I requested the song again, I was told they would start playing it when it was officially released or when it “charted”. Another station kiss98.9 has it On-Demand. Those are the two stations who play top 40 & pop. I have “on-demand” bookmarked on my computer so that’s how I listen to it when I want and of course I have the iTunes copy on cd and ipod. The beauty of having CRUSH at #2 on Billboard and #1 on iTune is that it had virtually little air play nationwide. That’s amazing! Don’t fret…you will be hearing it everywhere very soon!
PS…I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’m going to call 99.7 to see if they by some chance have a tape in their archives of me on the phone acting like I had won a million bucks instead of the chance to hear David on the radio…The dj’s thought I was a little, no alot CRA-ZEH!
#130 HigherVibe – I’m in Portland, OR, too (though I have been in Utah most of the summer -now I’m home). Which station did you call? I will call, too and back you up! I listened to pop all day today in hopes of hearing Crush but didn’t. This needs to change asap.
highervibe…I forgot also to add that the dj’s who say the don’t know who DAVID are not being honest. ANY dj who knows his business MAKES it his business to know what’s happening in music…and DAVID is a HUGE
HAPPENING right now.
#124, LoveDavid ~ I’ve been listening to Gravity and Crush all afternoon. Have you watched the Love Song video? Very interesting. I really do love her videos (including Fairytale) ~ that girl really has fun! I can see why maybe David said he’d like to BE her ~ ha! He loves having fun too! Typical 17-yr-old!
#127, Silverfoxe ~ yes, Sara (space) Bareilles should offer David commission for all the fans he’s bringing her ~ but I imagine he’d settle for an audience with her! I’d love to see that happen!
#130, HigherVibe ~ I’ve heard it said on other sites that you have to contact the Program Director (or Program Manager?) and not the DJ. The DJ has no authority ~ he just plays what he’s told to play. Don’t feel bad though, I live in Orlando and I still haven’t heard Crush on the radio, though I “demand” it on my station all the time. I contacted the Program Manager also, and he said they’re “considering” Crush, but there are many factors that go into that decision. So I’m still patiently waiting!
#131, JackRyan ~ you’re right about Lupe being forced to ride the girls’ bus, and that would defeat the purpose of David having a guardian for the duration of the tour. I think he’s probably a lot better off with Jeff, since I’d hate to see Lupe involved in all the media criticism that Jeff had to endure. I also think you’re “right on” about Simon. He probably thinks no one saw through that “wink.”
#133, Silverfoxe ~ very cute story about the first time you heard “Crush” on the radio! I can’t wait ’til that happens to me! *Sigh* I keep waiting and requesting!
#133 silverfoxe: I love your complete surrender to all things David. Love your craziness!! Great story! Speaking of all things David, right now I’m listening to Sara space Bareilles. I bought her CD, Little Voice. I especially love “Love Song” and “Gravity.” I also bought a couple of Jason Mraz songs: “I’m Yours” and “Lucky.” Our David has great taste, these songs are great.
OKAY…..EVERYBODY!!!!!!
PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I CAN GET A T SHIRT WITH DAVID’S FACE ON IT LIKE I HAVE SEEN IN PAST POSTS. I AM GOING TO THE TULSA CONCERT AND WANT TO GET A T SHIRT FOR DAVID TO SIGN
HELP PLEASE
I actually never saw AI before, hello gorgeous and vermeer, so not watching next season isn’t really a loss for me (or them) but I too made the decision not to watch except if David makes an appearance. I actually extended it to the Fox channel period – a one women boycott and with all the TV selections out there, its actually been very easy to not watch anything on Fox (exception is for David).
I have been reading on other blogs the same comment from AI watchers who are David fans to not watch AI next season. It will be interesting to see what the ratings are next season–my daughters are diehard watchers and during each season AI is a hot topic of weekly conversations with their friends.
I find the exit of Nigel fascinating and Cowelll taking a more active role an interesting turn of events. And as far as being a “honest” judge, I would have to say Cowell is the judge with the $ sign as his perceptual filter. I do realize the contestants sign up for his criticisms but I cringed at some of his utterances as they were not constructive but cruel. Now, since Crush’s debut, Cowell is saying David is a popstar and will sell alot of records–go figure.
Kizzi #139, I read the same article as you about Nigel leaving and Simon taking on a bigger role in shaping the show. His complaint about the “lack of personality” this past season can only be understood as he equates being a good person with lacking personality. I think season 7 had a lot of very nice people, namely the top 10 idols. That’s why they all get along so well and are giving fans such a good feeling. He asserts that things will be different and I take that to mean during auditions, he will make sure to select people with problem personalities to create more drama. One of the things I liked about AI was the lack of drama. Of course I’m speculating so I’ll stop. Oh who cares what he does.
Oh silverfoxe – have i told you i love you!!! I know how “supremely silly” you feel!
I have been all over radio land here in Manila, emailing program directors and DJs to play crush; leaving messages & Crush updates on their blogs so other fans could get reliable info and we Pinoy Archies are making dent despite of a couple of DJs who actually “hate” our boy! Hah!
Right now Crush is #1 in RX 83.1 (from #12 when it debut), finally unseating Broken by Lifehouse who has been #1 for 4 weeks. And it is #2 in Magic 89.9, after Disturbia. I have yet to check on the Campus Radio who is responsible for bringing Cook to Manila come Jan 27.
Anw, I always miss it when they play Crush but I persevere in requesting.
So a week ago, finally heard crush on the radio and you should have seen me!!! I was actually in my HS alma mater where I just finished interviewing the soon-to-retire vocal coach of our HS choir. When I started my car and the radio came on and heard the DJ introducing Crush, I started screaming and jumping on my seat! Mind you I was parked in front of the hallway where all the kids pass by and they were all looking at me probably thinking this lady in the car have gone cra-zeh!!! I had to stop when I saw their faces… then continued screaming because what the heck?! I was in my car! my personal space! so i didn’t care`what they think. My kids think am loco but have calmly accepted that they have a 3rd sibling now. Haha!
Are we not all “supremely silly” some times? Fun!
Again… where can I obtain a t shirt whith David’s face on it ……..anyone???? thanks
jackryan4DA..YOU BET IT’S FUN TO BE SUPREMELY SILLY OVER DAVID! I BUH-LIEVE LISTENING TO DAVID MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I CAN FLY AND MAKES ME FEEL ALIVE!
To all who have decided never to watch AI again…I don’t blame you. I don’t think there will ever be another like David on AI…..besides if by some miracle there is another that could pull me in like David did, I don’t think I could go through that experience again, and I was relieved when it was over…heartbroken, but relieved. IMAGINE my surprise when I found out there were thousands and thousands of fans, millions now, of all ages so I wasn’t the only one obsessed and there was even a name for it…ODD!
GOSH..That was also a relief! (That I was not CRA-ZEH!)
On a serious side, yes there are some dj’s who “hate’” David….isn’t that weird? I can understand hating someone’s music, but there are some people who are actually fearful of the impact that one young man can have on so many. They just don’t get it…why David has not just fanatic, but devoted fans who love him unconditionally. They don’t GET HIM…AND IT’S THEIR LOSS.
debra 5354, there are many DAVID FANSITES on the internet that have David merchandise for sale. You would have to order a t-shirt online but you can also make your own. Here in my city, we have many “flea-markets” and “peddlers malls” where you can find everything and anything…antiques as well as new items..and there are booths where you can buy a custom made t-shirt. you just tell them what you want on it, a photo, drawing or writing and they do it right there while you wait….I know that’s how alot of fans have their own custom-made t-shirts.
Silverfoxe, the fact that there’ll probably not be another David on AI is my other reason for not bothering with it anymore. Like you and so many out there, I am crazy about David, and this is the absolute first time in my entire life that I’ve felt this kind of a pull towards someone I haven’t even met (I saw him up close though but didn’t get to speak to him). BTW, you crack me up! I would go nuts too if I heard Crush on my local radio. It has not happened yet. I am not listening to pop radio stations enough. It’s bad enough I have to suffer through so many bad songs, I am refraining from subjecting my husband to them while commuting to work, but it won’t be long… It drives me bonkers I keep hearing all these other songs that are so inferior and but no Crush still! What is wrong with this picture??! Arrggh… I’ve written to a few program managers and told them about iTunes and Billboard Hot 100. Soon, very soon…
debra, I make t-shirts all the time – just find a pic of David you like on the web and save it on your computer. Put it on a flash drive and take it to Kinko’s – they will heat press it for you. Some Kinko’s have their own shirts or you can take one in. E-Z!
Too bad you all don’t live in Utah! Yesterday I heard Crush twice on two different radio stations in a 10 minute errand!! YES! I can usually hear him at least once when I’m in the car. I still clap and grin like an idiot each time, though. I don’t suppose it will ever get old.
vermeer, I also saw David up close with just a barricade between us in LEXINGTON. I could’t even say hi.. I devoured his face with my eyes…good thing I had on dark sunglasses. I will be attending another concert in Evansville on 9/11 ( feel kinda funny about having fun on that date ) and you can bet your bootie I say something…a real word, not just ahhhhh or ooooh, if he comes out to the barricades. And maybe, just maybe, if it’s feasable, I may cruise and blast CRUSH again.
Anyone else out there in rascal notingdavid land going to SEE DAVID in Evansville IN?
archu_adorable…I’ll have to try KInkos..thanks. And they better play “CRUSH” in UTAH…his home state!
silverfoxe, I really hope you get to speak to him, shake his hand and/or hug him!! I did manage to say “David, thank you for coming back out” and he looked up to see who said that, but at the same time I was realizing I had a clear shot of taking a possibly decent picture. I was only one row behind the gate; so close and yet so far and it was a closed gate instead of barricades so it was really awkward. People were really going nuts pushing, and hands, cameras, cell phones, T-shirts, and big signs were all being shoved in-between people’s heads for autographs. In that split second, I went for taking the picture when I had a chance instead of saying “I really appreciate it” so that he could’ve seen who said that. I’ve regretted my decision since. No matter how small, an exchange with him would have been far more precious than a photograph taken by me. I’ve posted here about my experience and I mentioned his eyes. I was struck by how … it’s hard to find the right adjective… deep, gorgeous, mesmerizing they were and how I wish now that his eyes could have met mine. Silverfoxe, do take full advantage of your second chance at meeting him!! You lucky gal!
Kizzi #139 I too, am boycotting everything the creators of AI are working on. So, no “You think you can dance” or “America’s got talent”. And I agree, the last thing Simon is, is honest. I found him very manipulative and calculating. In fact, the thing that bothered me the most, is not his treatment of David, which I think was not right, but his treatment of Syesha. I was never really a fan of Syesha, but the way he dismissed her during the final three performances was uncalled for. After Syesha performed “Hit me up” his comments were not about her performance, but, is the song about penguins or not?
David kept emphasizing about how much work went into each performance and how much it meant to the contestants that the fans appreciated it, I don’t feel American Idol respects or appreciates the contestants or the viewers. Sorry, I’m feeling negative too… Let’s talk about something more positive…hmm, so how about those Mets? lol
And, when Ryan asked the judges to comment on the final 3, both Paula and Randy were congratulatory, all Simon came up with was if they get the final he’s hoping for, it should be a real “humdinger”.
I must confess, there is a little hurt feelings on my part too, about Simon derogatorily saying David A fans being ONLY tweens & grandmas, & totally dismissing us in-between. So, I felt, in the grand scheme of Simon, I was not worthy of consideration. (I know, but i’m in the media, we pretty much all have big egos. )
Hello all, I’m a day late in commenting here. Long story: my laptop, which I was hoping to work on this weekend, came down with a pernicious virus (I’m talking electronic version of HIV, in which it wiped out my computer’s “immune system” – the anti-virus program, my systems restore, my uninstall program, and the files associated with the virus just would not delete! I’m going to have to find a good computer geek this week to help salvage my notebook, which I can only hope will be saved – I have some valuable documents on there, and personal info!!!).
That said, I’m on my regular desk computer, needing to get a positive fix (which usually means, all things David!
). Not to dwell on the negatives here, but just wanted to concur with Kizzi#139 and vermeer#140. I’m glad I’ve already committed to not watching next season because, from what Simon has recently described in interviews, it sounds like the show’s going down, way down, DEEP into the abyss of cruelty.
Simon, who’s a first-class jerk, is going to have more decision-making power? That can’t be a good thing! Ugh! Can’t you just imagine it? For someone who found Season 7 contestants to be “lacking in personality” (read: they were too nice and too genuine to “mug” and “perform” for the camera), I can only imagine the attention whores and whack jobs they’ll be recruiting. Unfortunately, there is a fallacy in the entertainment industry that such “personalities” make for good reality TV (read: more drama).
He basically said that next season will have “more controversy” (which I guess is his way of saying the whole Jeff “stage dad” controversy this year was too mild – probably because it wasn’t true!). And, when he promises that contestants in the “bottom two” will be in “more jeopardy”, I can honestly tell you all that, no way, no how, am I going to watch someone go through emotional trauma for entertainment (as if being in the bottom two isn’t already painful enough – ask Syesha! and, yes, vermeer, she suffered unnecessarily this season too).
Plans for next year already sound trainwrecky, so I’m glad I tuned into the show when I did (to discover David and Melinda Doolitte and Elliot Yamin – all genuinely nice and talented people) because, after this season, it’s all downhill from here. (Because, as others have said, lightening only strikes once, and there won’t be another David Archuleta).
American Idol, your days are numbered!
hello gorgeous, I totally agree with your comments re AI. But don’t you find it ironic that David continues and will continue to praise and thank AI for “everything” they “did’ for him. David was meant to do what he is doing, this was/is his destiny. I really buh-lieve David would have been “discovered” one way or another. It was inevitable. But it may have taken longer..can you imagine? What would we all be doing right now? Life BD….what and when was that? What kind of person was I BD? I think about that alot, how he changed so many people’s hearts and minds….it’s like we are interconnected with him. I wake up hoping he had a good and restful night, hoping he has a good day, that he and his family are well and happy. I worry about him like I worry about my own family. And it’s not just his voice or great looks…it’s something more. It’ mind boggling that so many people feel exactly the same way. People who may never see or talk or touch him, just want to know him even if it’s through cyberspace, tv, radio, whatever. Are we all CRA-ZEH ? How can so many people be SO HYPNOTIZED, MESMERIZED…I JUST GOT TO KNOW???? SORRY, I was getting too deep for myself. ha ha. Thank you AI, at least you did one thing right…you gave us DAVID and hopefully after this next year it will goodbye to AI FA-EVERRRR!
Cutter12 & Hello Gorgeous – Oh am sorry that I stirred up old wounds; Didn’t mean to do that. But don’t you get a kick now that we can look back at what those nasty people said/do and match them with the real things? Haha.. That would be a nifty youtube!
On to more creative pursuits!
1st scene Simon says “after the gosh & the gee, there’s not much… Next scene shows DA in the Sleazak interview or any of the numerous interviews where he talks like there is no tomorrow (haha); Nxt Simon says…. am sure u know what I mean here
Cutter12 & Hello Gorgeous – Oh am sorry that I stirred up old wounds; Didn’t mean to do that. But don’t you get a kick now that we can look back at what those nasty people said/did and match them with the real things? Haha.. That would be a nifty youtube!
on to more creative pursuits right?
1st scene Simon says “after the gosh & the gee, there’s not much… Next scene shows DA in the Sleazak interview or any of the numerous interviews where he talks like there is no tomorrow (haha); Nxt somebody said he can’t be pop, then next scene plays Crush debuting at #2 at Billboard Hot100; etc…
Hello Gorgeous… will AI become like Canadian Idol? You probably don’t watch it, but this year it is all about the performance and that does NOT mean you have to be able to sing. At least the AI contestants had talent this year (it is my first year watching either show).
Let’s try to keep perspective here. I believe that David and probably most all contestants who try out for AI do it for the exposure. They all know what to expect from the judges and still do it anyways. Perhaps all the negative comments are meant to prepare singers for the really cruel world out there that awaits them.
silverfoxe, David is such a better person than all of us because he will be eternally grateful to AI (even though, they’re just part of the deal – they gave him an outlet, he used it to his best, and we, the fans, kept him in the competition until finale night).
I’ve got mixed feelings about just how “grateful” I myself should be for that mean-spirited show that pretends it “gives us so much” (from great undiscovered talent to Idol Gives Back).
jackryan4DA, now that you’ve mentioned the concept, you so have to do that you tube video – make Simon eat his words!
jackryan4DA… that was…gosh…good!
awestruck…that may be, about the exposure factor, however, I really don’t think, given David’s level of compassion and ability to see the good in people, that he was fully aware that it would be so cutthroat.
But it’s over now…he keeps me comin’ back for more…I’m in heaven!…..oh sorry, I have my earphones
and ipod going…guess what I’m listening to…ha ha!
What I’m objecting to, awestruck#154, is the obvious way that the show has derailed from its early beginnings when things were a bit more organic and less scripted. It just sounds like “shock” and “controversy” is going to be deliberately planned just for high ratings. The show (and its producers) has become too self-important to see that what kept people tuning in is the discovery of new people trying to make it in a competition.
Their format was really annoying this year (extending results shows to an hour, when they needed to be only 30 minutes – especially when people only care about who got voted off, not which new music artist just released a new single!, coming up with that asinine Q&A session when the only questions contestants had to answer were superficial nonsense, like what was their most embarrassing moment, etc.)
How about changing up some of these things rather than blame the contestants? Or, here’s a better idea, work with the contestants you have!
Why is it that the most fun videos I saw from AI this year were all behind-the-scenes footage from AI EXTRA (which I found online) – had these clips been featured in the show, the audience would have already discovered that David is really hilarious (and seen the other contestants goofing off – talk about seeing their personalities shine!) long before the show was over. The show itself was lame (and it had NOTHING to do with the contestants – in fact, the only reason I tuned in was for the contestants: one to be exact
So, you know, feature them better when they’re not singing!)
The fact that Fox hasn’t a clue how to create really good “reality” drama only proves to me that they need to learn from the MTV masters who started it all (shows like Real World and Road Rules were really sharp, until they eventually went downhill, but they understood that what entertained audiences was the connection with certain featured contestants – something the AI Extra behind-the-scenes features manage to convey).
All this is to say, it sounds like next season is going down a slippery slope because they still haven’t figured out their raison d’etre. At least So You Think You Can Dance feels fresh and cool, precisely because that show continues to focus on the contestants, and on dancing in particular.
Had these self-absorbed producers actually looked at what’s really worked and what doesn’t, they would realize that, rather than just have music stars mentor their contestants, they can also feature them as guest judges – like back during seasons 2 and 3. SYTYCD features renowned choreographers as guest judges, and they actually introduce audiences, who are unfamiliar with dancing styles, to the whole choreography behind the dance. Do you know how many non-dancing Americans now know what a pas de deux is, thanks to SYTYCD? How many AI audiences can boast the same knowledge about different vocal styles?
Imagine if AI featured more of these kinds of “in-session” rehearsals! Imagine how much more we would have appreciated David’s talent.
I mean, there’s just a whole new range of different ways this show could remain fresh and reenergize itself without stooping to lame gimmicks like creating “controversy” or creating new and cruel ways to put bottom two contestants in “more jeopardy.”
I had already said I wouldn’t watch next year, just based on what I saw as unfair treatment of contestants I’ve grown to care for, but on the level of a regular TV viewer, I’ll have to pass since their plans merely prove that they don’t have a clue.
I don’t know Silverfoxe, David has said that he has watched AI since season 1 and he is smart, so… it’s interesting to speculate if he did indeed realize how bad it could be. I certainly don’t agree with Simon and his comments, but I do know that I can’t change them, so I try not to waste any energy worrying about how it might affect David and the other contestants.
Forgot… I am sure David put it all behind him immediately after the finale!
awestruck…well, yes David did watch AI from the first season on, but as hello gorgeous said ( boy, is she intense), AI was different and has been going down hill since. How could David really know what he was in for…there is no way. Yes, David is very smart, knew what he wanted, set a goal back when he first saw AI and achieved that goal. He used AI for the exposure, yes…but I still don’t think he realized he and his family would be targeted by rumors, or that he would be made fun of. He knew he may be criticized harshly by the judges and he was ready that I’m sure. We all know at the beginning he was the “golden” boy, the one to beat, etc. Simon saw $ signs over David’s head. But it was too early in the season…they couldn’t have a “Front Runner” that was as Good as David, that early so I wonder what exactly happened after “Imagine” because David was not the same, he was still brilliant, but something was missing. He didn’t look happy…and that was before the rumors about his dad, etc. So what was it? Then like a miracle, in the finale, David seemed more relaxed. It was as if a weight was lifted from his shouldres. I don’t think it was my imagination.
hello gorgeous…thank you. like rascal, you know how to put into words what some of us wish we could.
Actually, silverfoxe (didn’t realize I was coming off as intense, oops!), in a recent interview David did say that, after performing “Imagine,” he wasn’t able to “be himself,” until the finale night, when he decided to just let loose and put everything on the line, since that would be the last time he performed on the show. So, your observations that he “didn’t look happy” are spot on!
(Just can’t remember which interview he said all that.)
hello gorgeous….when you are as passionate as you are about your views, INTENSE is good, and that’s how I meant it..good “intense”. so keep being intense. I LIKE IT!
Can you imagine if TPTB had not pulled in the reins on David or whatever they did, and he could have continued “being himself”…oh my gosh! They would have had to change the name to THE DAVID ARCHULETA SHOW formerly known as AI….and that just wouldn’t do. That would have defeated the whole purpose of the competition…. there would have been No competition for David, hands down.
Don’t misunderstand, there were many good talents on the show but starting with the auditions on to IMAGINE, NOT ONE of the contestants could touch David, in talent & personality. And even after that, his singing was sublime, but something happened and a light went out in his eyes.
You know Simon likes to take credit for “discovering” talent…ie..Il Divo, Leona Lewis…I’ll bet he would love to take credit for “discovering” David too and could probably kick himself for not continuing to champion David like he did in the beginning.
Silverfoxe, isn’t is it obvious Simon is already rewriting recent history by calling David a “genuine pop star who will sell lots of records” when just months earlier, he was complaining how he “lacked personality” and would be horrible in interviews? *rolls eyes.*
To be fair to Simon, though, he never pretended to be anything but a superficial businessman who is only about the bottom line.
And yes, I often wonder how David would have been if he didn’t “hold back” in the duration of the show. Maybe that’s a good thing because we might not have been able to handle it. We’re already so intense now, as it is!
David is certainly NOT the first Idol who has suffered injustice by the hand of Simon and the AI machine. Believe me, I have been on the fan sites and heard (and seen with my own eyes) all the insults and put-downs and ridicule that almost every Idol who has made it into the Top 2 or 3 has suffered. This is nothing new, and what has been said here is like deja vu to me, seriously.
As has been said, David is so intelligent for his young age. I remember one of the first interviews he gave after his audition before Simon, and he said the judges would be like ~ “that’s ok… or that’s terrible, from Simon” ~ so yes, David had watched AI from the beginning, and he knew how Simon could be ~ in fact, all of the Top 10 knew how Simon was. This latest Larry King interview brings that out again. The interviews are on YouTube and Fanblast for all to see ~ nothing new, but interesting to hear the comments from the Idols about Simon.
I started watching Idol from Season 2, and felt so sorry for Clay Aiken and all he endured. David has been compared to Clay because Clay was so very talented, didn’t win, but has far surpassed Reuben, the winner of Season 2. I have a feeling our David will do the same, and hopefully more. I’m so happy that AI brought us David Archuleta, and they can’t take that away from me!
Silverfoxe, I know we are only speculating about what might have happened that changed David, but I am 100% in agreement with you in your observation of the changes in David; I believe others have commented on that before , myself included. It was very puzzling to say the least. And we also all know that had David been able to continue to “be himself”, the contest would have been over. After Imagine, the top 12 were chosen and during the interviews of the contestants on E, Brooke, Jason, and I can’t remember who else, had all said, in a nice way and not out of jealousy, that it was pretty much a “David Archuleta Show!” And they were right and would have been right, if nothing changed.
Whenever David did particularly well, he got praises that others typically would not get and certainly not multiple times as he did, such as “By a comfortable mile, it was the best performance, you are the one to beat, and there are 19 miserable contestants, you did not beat the competition, you crushed the competition, it was a knock out!” I know, it’s funny they all came from Simon himself, but how many contestants can claim to crush the competition so many times in one season?
So David was always brilliant; it’s just that I and many of you really missed the David that we saw in Top 24 and 20, and poof that happy go lucky giddy self went away. Partially I thought that was explained by what Rascal had written about awhile back about how this whole competitive part of what the show was supposed to be was so not him (of course Rascal said it much more eloquently and hopefully I didn’t misunderstand him!). Yes, David is smart and knows what the show is all about. Silverfoxe, I think you said it very well. It’s another thing to actually be dragged into this ridiculous “controversy” that involved his own parent. We all know, post show he was mighty “annoyed” by what had happened, having to keep talking about something that wasn’t part of reality, or something to that effect. He wants to talk about music and he was finally expressing his anger (he uses a millder word in public like annoyance) at being forced to deal with ridiculous rumors started by TMZ and/or the AI producers.
Yes, he is grateful. Nothing is all black and white. He could never ignore the fact that AI planted the seeds of his dream way back when he was 11 watching Season 1. It is tremendous exposure, and in the end, I’m sure the producers (speculating here) let him know they knew all along he was the winner meaning the record contract was his regardless of how America voted. They just needed a rocker to win in order to win back some credibility after what happened to Chris Daughtry. Exposure and a chance to make an album is all that David was dreaming about, not coming out as #1 at all cost. So it all worked out for him. He said he was already talking to Jive that very night of the finale. It was all a done deal instantly. I bet you that didn’t happen with runner up Clay Aiken (though I wouldn’t know for certain).
Since he’s watched the show from the beginning, he knew cruel comments were part of the show and he knew the truly talented people do get tossed out. He is very realistic and sensible, especially for someone his age. But even then, having gone through it, I sense that he was disturbed by the amount of cruelty that befell some of the contestants such as Syesha by the comments he’s made on the first Larry King Live. He really did not appreciate the causal dismissal by Simon and the complete lack of acknowledgment or appreciation for a person’s effort and extreme hard work, talking about Syesha, Cook, and himself included, and really everybody.
I watch So You Think You Can Dance because I love dancing, but this season (my second one to watch), I could not watch or listen to Nigel. Yes, I was bitter, very bitter. But at least that show, the judging is thoughtful, and is about dancing for the most part and it is done by dancers and choreographers! It is real critiques! What a difference. The lame so-called judging on AI has always been somewhat of a puzzle to me, but whatever, if that’s how that show is, then that’s that. However, for me, long before the end, I was telling myself I could not watch this again next year because I do not enjoy seeing a young person who is earnestly trying his or her best get kicked in the teeth by Simon. I am thinking in the very beginning before top 12, Simon literally told a contestant who just got eliminated and is in tears (a guy) that he is useless.
I’ve always had a problem with people categorizing AI as “reality show” because to me, it is just a singing competition. There was no behind the scenes cat fighting of any sort, etc. except I guess during audition week with the group performances. If good TV entertainment is being exposed to ugly drama, I’ll read a good book, anything but.
hello gorgeous, like silverfoxe said it is good intense but first I thought your computer woes (and really sorry to hear about that, seriously, yikes!!) really must have put you in a feisty mood. But it’s all good. : )
Did y’all know about this happening tomorrow?
http://radio.disney.go.com/music/davidarchuletatakeover.html
All I know is, I love and want to celebrate David Archuleta. He is still on tour, and he is still under contract to American Idol. I wouldn’t want to jeopardize that in any way, or even let David know that I am unhappy about that.
We can choose to watch, or not watch, American Idol ~ it’s as simple as that.
I LOVE DAVID ARCHULETA! If I hadn’t watched Idol, I never would have been on this journey. I may have heard of David on down the road, but not during these very EXCITING TIMES in his life! For that I am SO THANKFUL, and thankful to Idol that they let him on the show! Hallelujah! I rest my case.
Oh My gosh…Hello Gorgeous, Heart. and Vermeer – great, GREAT comments.
Just to add my little two cents – All I can say is that there is some higher spiritual force that drives David. His vocal coach and many others have said publicly that they were hoping he would try out next year instead. Thank God David without his knowing auditioned for Season 7 despite his personal views on the limitations of his voice and talent, and the rest is history. This new format that Simon intends to premiere next year might have been the last straw to break David’s brand of decency and get him turned off from the show he had admired for so long. He may have then resorted to trying to break into the business the old-fashioned way and then where would we be? Perhaps living our day to day mundane lives without the joy of knowing David. Simon seemingly wants to peddle a “Amy Winehouse” type of person instead of a talented one. I got the sense that Randy Jackson were it his show alone would have championed David even more than he tried to do on the show because he recognized what the purpose of the show was really about – finding the most talented singer and not personality of Season 7.
I meant to say David’s own view of his voice at the time and not his coach.
Thanks!
Great discussion, guys, really enjoying it. I agree with hello gorgeous and others about being done with A.I. cause it’s served its purpose. Now I look at the show merely as the vehicle that helped drive David’s musical development toward the mainstream then delivered him to the world stage.
The first seasons (and live shows) of A.I. clearly inspired David at a young age to broaden his musical horizons and explore his soulful side while introducing him to a pop repertoire and a range of singing styles he hadn’t experienced before.
Then, watching someone his own age win last year likely inspired him to go for it and audition last year. Fast forward to this season, which exposed his talent, charisma and intestinal fortitude to record companies and fans worldwide. Without this show, he may have remained undiscovered for who knows how long or, worse, his talent may have been straitjacketed in a niche genre.
It’s not that I give A.I. any credit for helping David, it’s the other way around — I’m crazy enough to think that in the grand scheme of things the purpose of A.I.’s very existence from Day One has been to bring the world the marvel that is David Archuleta.
(Whew, my longest post ever. Must rest now, lol.)
hello gorgeous, vermeer, joymus, heart, silverfoxe, awestruck, jackryan, cutter – great discussion. I love looking at this from your perspectives.
hello gorgeous – I look forward to your comments and perspective – you have a propensity to get to the core of an issue and I am in awe of that gift
vemeer – I love your balanced perspective – I think I may be your e-twin when I read your viewpoint though I am not as expressive or eloquent as you
joymus – you look to what is and I embrace the “glass half full” mindset I agree about Randy. I think he recognizes musicality and talent first and foremost. Paula to me was “heart” and I think she is really brilliant in seeing the core of the performer. I already commented on Simon (the $$$ man).
heart – your online name says it all. You have such “heart.”
silverfoxe – you are the “joie des esprit” in all things David and I truly am enamored to what you share here at notingdavid.
awestruck – you have much AI experience and “savoir faire.” I have always speculated as to how knowing David and his family were to the AI experience. It is interesting to hear from you that those “cruelties and controversies” of Season 7 were apparent prior to Season 7.
cutter – great comments and perspective. You look at the facts from all perspectives
jackryan – I enjoy the way you analyzed AI and David. Great insights.
I did meet David at my 2nd of 4 AI concert tours. I spent about 60 seconds with him, shook his hand, thanked him for his music and gave him a gift. He made steady eye contact and had such presence for 17 (I have two sons 21 & 24 who are in the performance arts as a hobby and have devoted an intensive amount of time with teens in performance arts so I have basis for comparison.) He certainly had a heightened sense of awareness about him at the 4th concert I attended than the first. I had this incredible compulsion to attend these concerts coupled with the ability to do so due to my travel schedule. I have this certainty of his success and future, no doubts. In life, we have few things that we achieve such certainty, but at this point, although quite personal to me, I have such.
#170 TOfan – “the purpose of A.I.’s very existence from Day One has been to bring the world the marvel that is David Archuleta.”
Amen!
wowzeee! I leave for a while, come back and I find all these great comments, hello gorgeous, vermeer, heart, joymus…How intense! we do love our David…
heart…yes you are right, about not wanting to jeopardize David in any way, but I don’t think our comments here will do that. I don’t think Simon or any other AI producer gives a dang what we may or may not think or say. What will jeopardize David is sales or lack thereof. AI is in business to make $ off their contestants FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE….BUT A STAR WAS BORN on AI…DAVID, who will have lasting power. I have no worries about David as far as recording contracts are concerned. To be perfectly honest, I can see David having his OWN recording company someday, his own clothing & shoe line, I can see him produce other up & coming artists. And he will do it all with integrity & honesty.
The thing we, his fans have to be careful in our zeal for David that we don’t alienate the radio stations when requesting CRUSH. We have to be patient if certain areas haven’t played it yet. And
speaking of AI, you’d be surprised how many dj’s hate AI…some dj’s think the contestants haven’t “paid their dues” and are nothing more than kareoke singers. You mention AMERICAN IDOL singer and it’s a turnoff right away to some dj’s. Fortunately, they have to play what the program director lists on the playlists and that will happen with CRUSH nationwide when it’s officially released, if it hasn’t already started with the Billboard news.
sorry if my spelling is atrocious!
TOfan….wow! love that quote about AI’s purpose…that very well could be the cha-ruth!
but if so, then their purpose is complete and I no longer need AI…thank you very much! I had my ” WHAT…JUST…HAPPENED” moment when David had me at “HEAVEN” & I get that same moment every time I see a video of David…it’s the best feeling in the world.
Thanks for all the kind replies to my comments!
TOfan – All I can say to the end of your last comment is – chills, Chills, CHILLS!!!
It just floored me – because David honed much of his singing and performing from watching, imitating and internalizing those who had blazed a trail before him. It prepared him but not us for his entry to the entertainment world. He dropped an “Archu” Bomb on us the likes of which we may NEVER fully recover.
134-smanda – Yes, this needs to change here in PDX! I called KINK, Scott Alexander was dj yesterday so that’s who I talked to, he said he’d “talk to his music director”. So I emailed the guy too (Dean Kattari, according to their web site), no word yet but it is weekend, so maybe tomorrow. Thanks, let’s get the song on the air, it’s “crazy” that it’s not!!
133,135 – silverfoxe – great story!! I would so LOVE to hear it on the radio! If you get that air clip, you should post it! Sounds like the vid of David hearing it for the first time!!
136 – Heart – not playing in Orlando? Now THAT is really crazy! David’s from FL! Thanks for the info re: the music director, that’s who I’m trying to get through to, and am hopeful…..
Yikes, more comments to respond to, not enough time, I’m moving and so is a friend. Not enough hours in the day. So happy to be able to duck into the site here whenever I can. Love you all!
Tofan, great post.
“I’m crazy enough to think that in the grand scheme of things the purpose of A.I.’s very existence from Day One has been to bring the world the marvel that is David Archuleta.” I wanna say maybe, maybe not, but I know for DANG sure that in the grand scheme of things, the purpose of MY watching AI from Day One has been to discover and be involved in the marvel that is David Archuleta! And so now I’m through.
thanks highervibe…I will be calling the the radio station tomorrow. I hope they still have it. To be honest, thinking back on it, I can’t buh-lieve I got so hysterical….it was a “pop” station and I’m ah..
mature & my blog name says it all! ha ha!
Folks — If I don’t engage in discussion it’s not because I am not interested, but because I feel the participants here have things well in hand.
I just want to thank you all for engaging in such heartfelt, articulate, intelligent discussion and debate. I feel like it took some time to get the tenor of these blog comments to a point where I wasn’t either appalled or creeped out by them, but somehow it has happened. A least for the time being. I cherish all of you for that.
Those of us who decide to erect something of a virtual soapbox invariably open ourselves up to all manner of ridicule, regardless of how genuine, heartfelt, and even wholesome our intent. I suppose that’s the price one pays for giving up complete privacy… Maybe I am experiencing just a tiny taste of what David will have to contend with for perhaps the rest of his life. It isn’t easy. The fact that one’s detractors may be an insignificant minority, plainly troubled by their own demons, doesn’t seem to lessen the sting–if you cut me, do I not bleed?
I have today renewed admiration for our hero (our human, angelic, fallible, brilliant hero), who has already processed with utmost grace more wrongful intent than many people will suffer in a lifetime. Yet he needs neither our pity nor our praise. Only our undying love. The same love he compels us to feel when he opens his soul in song.
kizzi, “e-twin”! that’s cute. Me expressive? um maybe. Eloquent? No!
Joymus, I enjoyed reading your experience that you posted at Fans of David, assuming there is only one joymus?!
Oh kizzi, you say 4th(!!) concert? Holy cow! I am VERY envious.
As far as AI, it is wonderful that David did go to the audition even though during the season I too questioned (in agreement with his voice coach, Dean) his having gone for it this year while his voice was still changing, mostly because I felt bad for him for the challenges that went with that. But like him, and this is even more reasons why I find him so great, I believe in things happening for a reason, that if something happened, it was supposed to have happened, so, much as I may spew out some critical opinions concerning this season (this is the only season I really cared about), I am not saying things should have, could have, would have etc. Everything in life leads to the next thing and are necessary, or at least that’s how I understand life. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing to review and learn from. Since David did choose to audition for Season 7, we all know what the result of that was, besides the obvious, a bunch of happy people like us who can’t stop grinning every time we see David’s most gorgeous smile, hear him laugh and of course sing.
I didn’t mean to knock Randy and Paula along with Simon. I think it’s true that Randy seems genuinely interested in talent in the contestants, for the most part anyway, and as ditzy as Paula can be, she calls some things right – “David, you are destined for super stardom!”. But it is odd how little time is allotted for review/critique for a competition show, compared to So You Think You Can Dance.
Rascal, I’m glad to see you are not unhappy with us carrying on (an on and on) for a few days now. I was about to and should anyway, say sorry for taking up SO much space here with a few of my comments. I felt compelled. Thank you for this blog if I have not said that before.
Ah, Rascal, I never think of you with detractors but as a champion of David. I have to think on this.
If you have given up privacy for your unwavering support of David, all I can say is THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I am convinced, his success, in cyberspace and in the real world, is in part, due to your early, vigorous, cogent and eloquent support.
And, your words, “Yet he needs neither our pity nor our praise. Only our undying love. The same love he compels us to feel when he opens his soul in song” summarizes these past six month for me. I was actually attempting to put into words the love that I feel and researching how to say what I felt. Then, presto, you post the above. Bravo!
Thank you Rascal.
rascal…I thought you took the day off…but there is no day off from David. He is our addiction and this site is the best place I have found to get a fix. Try as I might to stay off, I am compelled to get on the computer to see what’s going on with David every day! I look at the clock and try to figure out where he is and what he may be doing, ie…now he’s on the road, now he’s at the barricades, now he’s performing, now he’s at the meet & greet after the concert, now he’s…well you get my drift. Isn’t is just the nuttiest thing?
David will forever have my undying love, that is for dang sure. He’s done so much for me and he doesn’t even know it….
Just had to share this. I have Crush on my cute little pink Venus cell phone as a ring tone. One day last week, I decided I was going to play this for a co-worker at the risk of getting in big trouble (cell phones are forbidden to be on our desks, let alone ‘on’ in our purses). This co-worker thought David was ‘good’ but ‘too young’ to win the contest all through the AI season. She also thought all he could sing were the old slow songs he performed on AI. So I played the chorus to Crush and blew her away. She couldn’t believe that was David Archuleta…and just how good the song was, so contemporary and up to date. As I watched her eyes get really big, I was loving the VALIDATION I felt. She loved it, and I’m quite sure she is going to tell all her family and friends about it, especially her daughter who voted heavily for Cook after the final two show was over. I kept telling everybody who would listen that David is NOT boring (this was the main complaint I got about him during the contest) and that he could indeed sing up to date, hip and contemporary tunes. BTW, the same thing happened to my son and soon to be be daughter in in law (two more Cook fans). They both love CRUSH and were also amongst those who felt Archie was going nowhere but straight to a choir to sing. Bwhahahahaha, fools they are. V-A-L-I-D-A-T-I-O-N is sweet.
vermeer — as with most things, it is not quantity but quality.
Kizzi — Just understand that people with power become targets for the disenfranchised, regardless of how much light is involved in their power. It’s silly, to me, to think of myself as someone with power, but I guess in the DA fan community, people do acknowledge what I have to say, to at least some extent. If you look back over the posts of the past month or so, you will see comments that indicate a fundamental dissatisfaction with my perspective on things like David’s physical beauty. To the mind of a philistine, the appreciation of beauty can only equate to base, simplistic lust. This narrow and and childish view can give rise to all manner of vulgar and disgusting accusations, all of which–I kid you not–have been levied against yours truly.
Why, you may ask, do I even offer countenance to these clowns of conscience? Because in my own humble and compassionate way, I try to acknowledge the value of every sentient being. It is foolish of me, I know (pearls before swine and all that), but I happen to believe that ignorance is the cause of most of the ills of the world, and that knowledge may be its salvation. Do I have all knowledge? I would claim only to have the least. But I know my own heart. And true knowledge of the heart can only be the knowledge of good.
silverfoxe — please accept the following in the sprit that it’s meant: You are a complete freak, and I love you for it.
Fe….ha ha ha, that is so good! That’s what is going to happen when radio stations start playing CRUSH nationwide…listeners will say “WHAT? WHO WAS THAT? DAVID ARCHULETA FROM AI? WOW! WHAT…JUST….HAPPENED!?! ha ha ha!
Why rascal…I’m touched! Just call me a David Freak….kinda like a “religious freak” only without the AMEN’S!
silverfoxe…absolutely!! I can’t wait for CRUSH to hit the main vein nationwide! I’m so ready for it, and I know the rest of the angels are too. We are going to eat it all up and yes, we should all say ‘tolja so’. Hee hee. Oh, I LOVED rascal freak comment about. Gave me the giggles, and we know he meant that in the ‘bestest’ way possible. Also, someone up there mentioned that rascal is a David Archuleta enabler That is priceless, pure genius.
Rascal – I just read your post at today at another blog and I “think” I understand what you are saying. I think that blog is about validating a particular point of view. So, you are right in thinking that you have lost privacy. I, for one, truly appreciate your blog, your strength, your appreciation of all things David.
Gah, Rascal, I can’t begin to imagine the narrow minded state that would give rise to accusations against you. I spend my life staying away from such toxic individuals and I can only reiterate my appreciation of your championing David. Words just can’t express my regard for what you have done.
oops, I left out part of my sentence in 188…it should say rascal’s freak comment about you’. (left out ‘you’)…aaaarrrghhh…need to slow down and proofread better.
Fe, yeah that was sweet of rascal calling me a “freak”, ha ha ha. I’ve been called worse in my life BUH-LIEVE me! But for some reason, I took rascal’s comment as a compliment….after all, it’s partially his fault. He is definately an ENABLER FOR EVERYTHING DAVID and my freakiness just got worse when I found this site….and I LOVE HIM for it…are you there rascal?
yes, silverfoxe, it was a backhanded compliment. Considering some of the freaks I’ve been dealing with recently, your brand is entirely delightful.
I step away from my computer and come back to such a lively discussion! Thanks, everyone, for such a lively. Vermeer#165, I’m sure the rage that I was expressing yesterday when my laptop came down with that virus was still lingering through this “feisty mood” of mine..
Wow, rascal, I’m sorry to hear that the comments you’ve made here on your own blog have been misconstrued in a mean-spirited way. Oh well. It happens, and we’re all lucky to have you keep doing what you’re doing.
Well, everyone, I’m off to watch the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Until next time!
uh, rascal, do I detect some sadness in your posts? I hope not . What is sad is when the Holier than Thou’s think they are God’s messengers of everything holy.
Look, I may not be the smartest or most prolific blogger on your site, but I know LOVE when I “read” about it, I know RESPECT when I “read” about it. THIS SITE IS ABOUT NOTHING BUT LOVE & RESPECT FOR DAVID. I’m assuming you took some heat about the “Crush is Sexy” and maybe the “SMOKING” articles. I can tell you, rascal, that those articles allowed us “grown ups” to release pent up feelings that some of us may have been uncomfortable with, ie…maybe I shouldn’t be feeling like this about a young boy..swooning over a man/child. You allowed us to say what we felt, you helped us see we were not alone in those feelings. Your insight about how we, his middle-age and older fans feel is right on, and you don’t judge us. You have the insight as well to know when to, as you put it, rein us in if it gets too weird. David happens to be a great singer who has a very sensual way about him on stage and in photos and you just said in those articles what we all were thinking. So thank you again, rascal.
And if I’m way off base…please forgive me, I just wanted you to know I appreciate you. ( even if you think I’m freaky!) hahaha
Thank You Rascal for popping in and checking on your students – hope we’re doing you proud!
Thank You Vermeer – Yes it is one and the same Joymus with the fan experience story on FOD. Glad you enjoyed it so much!
Silverfoxe – Rascal’s calling it as he sees it but where would we be without your enthusiasm for David? lol!
“if you cut me, do I not bleed?” Ouch rascal. I feel very bad to think how it must have made you feel, though I know you can handle it the same as David can and does handle adversity. Even if you were a blameless saint, there is always going to be someone who will condemn you for something, real or imagined.
silverfoxe, it’s kind of neat to get to know someone better and better reading posted comments over time and you are such an enthusiastic David fan, ok, a freak (blame rascal!). You have life experience as an older fan would (I don’t mean to imply you are the oldest by any means! he he. I am no spring chick myself) and I mean to say you are not all “freaky”. I’ve enjoyed your more dee-freaked
comments too!
Rascal,
I am very distressed to hear that your posts have sometimes been misconstrued and criticized. What I love about this blog is the open-minded, adult discussion that takes for granted that we are all decent human beings with respect for each other. I hope that you can let the negative comments slide off into the gutter where they belong.
Rascal is very much beloved by David’s fans, and we’re dang lucky to have him. If he has detractors, then he must be doing sumthin’ right!
Hang in there, rascal. We all appreciate the risk you took in mounting this brave site dedicated to David’s artistry — don’t let the sun go down on it!
Rascal, just popping in to say I love and respect you although I have never met you. Your articles have never offended me. I love “smokeboy” lol just as you do, and apprecitate everything you write about David. I love reading your opinions about him and hope to continue to see them. BOY I have said love alot!! David brings out the lLOVE in people doesn’t he? HA HA!! You are so awesome Rascal!!
Thank you Rascal for your lovely and stirring way with words .I look so forward to reading your poetic descriptions of all things David. I so enjoy the discussion on this site …I am not an avid poster here…I tried before and made a mess of it. But please know Rascal that your outlook and overviews are most appreciated …this is definitely the champagne of David blogs. Cheers !
ojs759, love your champagne analogy…I totally agree. I lurk often and post rarely. Mostly, I love coming to this site for Rascal’s beautifully articulated, spot-on observations of David and the analytical insights and often hilarious responses from David’s diverse and yes, rabid, fan base. I always leave with confirmation that I am not alone in my fascination with this talented and charming boy, and with a better understanding of my own responses to his artistry. Thanks Rascal, for putting yourself out on cyberspace… I’m sorry that you’re experiencing negativity from folks who don’t get you, but I hope you know how much the rest of us appreciate and love what you do!
rascal, when ODD struck me earlier this year, I hit all the sites I could find about David. (I actually still remember the day you first agreed with a comment of mine on another site! For some reason I felt so proud!) As the season wound down and as I had personal experiences helping David and with fans and friends of his, my perspective changed and the funnel of my searching became narrower and narrower until now this is the only site I come to. Your eloquent words and the caliber of the discussion spawned by them in general make me proud to be a fan rather than embarrassed or annoyed at myself.
You are to be commended for creating this community, which I have come to believe is a large part of what blogging is all about. The community that David has created here, facilitated (or enabled!) by you is one that I hope I can be a part of far into the future when other sites have moved on to other things of the moment.
Because of the nature of online communications, people make a choice to represent themselves truthfully or in a way that does not reflect who they really are. I don’t think you have ever misrepresented who you are and I am sorry that some have been offended when you have stood firm.
As for the people who respond here – Silverfoxe’s now-famous video of drive-by CRUSH blaring validates that she has not misrepresented her ‘freak’ side one bit and I tend to believe that it would be the same with everyone else if we had a video of each of us in our unabashed ODD moments! Priceless!
Much love and heartfelt thanks.
So many comments on this particular thread, it’s taken me all evening to catch up! Nice to be able to enjoy the luxury again.
119, I had never heard of Sara B before DJA, and just love her–I’ve been learning to play Gravity on the guitar, it’s one of my faves too. (Don’t look for me on AI 8, though haha!!) So much new music I’ve learned about. I have tix to both Edwin McCain (David doesn’t mention him, but has sung his songs in earlier youtube vids) and to Sara space B… concerts coming up.
Rascal, I totally got what you were saying, you really got your head stuck on a pole there for a while, and unjustified criticism leaves such a bitter taste. So glad you clarified and forged ahead, opening the cyber door for business again! (belated thanks, btw) It reminds me of Jeff’s experience with the mud-slinging he experienced, and how hurtful it is. Toxic words live on and color subsequent experience—I note in that Bush interview that Jeff is still smarting from the unfair treatment he got.
And explosive laughter on your comment to silverfoxe, she is a freak of the highest order (read: most wonderful)! Thanks too for your effervescence!
As I’m watching the closing ceremonies, I’m thinking—can’t wait to hear David singing at the London games in 2012. Oh my, I think I’m going to book my tickets right now, because David has an uncanny knack for having his dreams come true! This is off-topic, but can’t you just hear him singing “When you Believe” instead of the song in this promo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Crxms85wnkg
(the promo’s not that great, don’t feel obliged to watch all, I’m just sayin’…..)
#205 archu_adorable – I always like what you say and yet again, agree with you about Rascal and this site. So glad it is here and so much appreciate reading other’s comments.
Oh rascal I can fully empathize with you on how certain dispositions and disclosures could be misconstrued. It would seem that if in real life this is de rigueur, how much more in the written word where we are, virtually and actually, among strangers w/o faces, eyes, hands, body languages. So much is absorbed, yet so much is also assumed.
But I agree, even if you can rationalize things thrown your way, it doesn’t mean you don’t hurt… The price you have to pay for opening up your lovely soul for every discourse you post which are only always full of admiration, respect and hope for our phenom.
This venue, thanks to you, have attracted all sorts who love David but more importantly, at least to me, it is where you have welcomed participants – not conformists. That love for David binds us definitely. But perhaps it is that same love that compels us to be brave enough to step into the morass of exchanges here because we feel open, at home. Even if it means, at times, stepping out of bounds or assuming where there in none to assume.
But I digress… I better go back to my cacciotore before it burns! CYL guys!
Highervibe- you talking about the Olympics reminded me of a story that aired on my TV station the other night, that compared the Olympics to David. The script read
” According to our Utah Nielson ratings.. during the last five nights.. nearly -50 percent of all televisions turned on during prime time were tuned in to the Olympics.
That’s about the same as having David Archuleta on American Idol final, five nights in a row.
Not quite as popular as the Olympics here in Salt Lake in 2002.. but, slightly -more popular than the Athens Games. ”
I just love how David seems to pop up everywhere! And, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he will be able to perform in the Vancouver Winter Olympic games, as well as the Summer games.
Rascal, It saddens me that when a person speaks about another with such love and respect, there are some, yes, philistines, that enjoy twisting those wonderful feelings and putting their own disguting views on them. But, it gladdens me immensely to read your efforts to see them as valuable, sentient beings. With so much Darkness encroaching the Earth, It is people like David, his family, you and the people who contribute to this blog, that I believe help the Light stave off the Dark. Through your and others writings, I have found such genuine care and affection towards David and to each other. I’m in total agreement with ojs759, notingDavid is the champagne of all blogs. So, I raise my glass to you all. Cheers !
I dunno if you have seen this cos am getting cra-zeh trying to play catch-up with all the other blogs… darn real life getting in the way of my archulife!
Anw, is it just me who find this pic sexy… of him….boy oh boy, our boy IS growing up!

I asked the girls at the other blogs not to shoot me, haha!
#211 – why is he touching her back???? OMG
Wow such an interesting discussion going on here! I missed it all LOL!
Rascal – I too have been on the receiving end of negative comments about my ODD (to a lesser degree than you to be sure) but it is hurtful, condescending, and saddening to say the least. I’ve been told that I must have OCD, I must need medication, or therapy, I must be insane, I must be a pervert, etc., etc…..yes, I am obsessed to be sure, but I am none of the above things, I am addicted to the feelings I get when I hear his voice, and see his smile, and feel his kind-heartedness. He brings joy to me. Joy has no age, no judgement, no barriers. Why is this so misunderstood?
Ah! I knew you would be one of the 1st to react FG!!! I wonder what Kristi and Xeno will say.
I repeat, don’t shoot the messenger ok? But i really find it sexy and sweet, right?
I know I’m late to the party, but I did want to thank you, Rascal, for another great article. I appreciate your helping me to understand the intense feelings that David generates in me. I have some ideas of my own, as well, that I’ll share.
In large measure, I feel just gobsmacked when it comes to my obsession with David. It is so completely out of character for me, it’s not even funny. I didn’t even listen to music period for more than 20 years other than an occasional trip to the symphony. No exaggeration. That is, until I heard David sing on his original 27 old YouTube videos, and that was all she wrote. I was down for the count. I was completely and utterly besotted on the spot.
His music evokes such a strong reaction in me. There are a number of his songs that I get weepy every single solitary time I hear them, even after months of listening to him 24/7. Often, I’ll feel just gut-punched my reaction is so intense. I have a genuine, strong, physical reaction to hearing him sing. It’s bizarre to me because I’ve never experienced anything remotely like it in my life.
My son harrassed me a few months ago because he thought my avid interest in David was the heighth of idiocy. Of course, it was all to no avail. There was no way I was going to stop listening to and following David. But, it was odd. I could not stop the tears from trickling down all day long as I did my housework. Finally, my son apologized profusely and I got beyond it, but who is this person? Oh, it’s ME.
Here’s my opinion on what hit me. I think the explanation for the strong reaction that David provokes in people is basically three-fold. First, is his exquisite, soaring, emotive voice. He sings from such a deep part of himself that if you are open to him, it hits you in a similarly deep place. A lot of people respond like I do to his songs. That type of reaction is beyond rare, to put it mildly. Second, is that he exudes the Spirit. He’s living right; he’s close to God. You can feel it. Third, is that he is a just plain, flat-out wonderful human being. He’s so kind, sweet and endearing, charismatic, full of integrity, funny, a complete delight. He’s pretty inside and out. If you have a heart and an open mind, it is impossible not to love this kid.
Someone on this site stated that she loved David “like he was my own”. That definitely fits for me. Right on the money. I truly love him like he was my own. He and his music bring me great joy. I’ll be a huge fan well past forever and a day.
#200 vermeer…uh..thanks…I do have my lucid moments occasionally.
And at 61 yrs old, the fangirl/freaky feelings I have for David take me back to my teen years when I obsessed over the teen idols of the day, Fabian, Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vee, Frankie Avalon an of course my fantasy…Elvis. It was a happy, glorius time. But I KNOW I AM NOT 16 YEARS OLD

Well said everyone!
FunnyGirl I so agree with you especially with”I am addicted to the feelings I get when I hear his voice, and see his smile, and feel his kind-heartedness”. David’s singing grabs me to my very soul, but it his nature that inspires me.
Rascal be strong, we all support you!
#200 vermeer…uh..thanks…I do have my lucid moments occasionally.
well…that lucid moment didn’t last long….thanks, jackryan4DA!!!
Everyone…please disregard #217 & 218…I’m at work and I was interupted by a coworker and lost my train of thought….didn’t mean to double post. That does happen to me when I’m having an ODD moment! so sorry!
What I meant to say is that I know I’m not 16, but it’s fun to act like it in MY HEAD. We here are not hurting anyone and I won’t apologize to anyone for the way we feel about David. So there!
#213..why is he touching her back???? hahaha. I keep thinking about that! And how we all want to say…stop that right this minute!! That’s the green monster in us! hahaha! I’ll bet that girl is still feeling the heat! hahaha! sorry, it’s just so funny…our reactions.
A funny review by Blender Mag – I don’t think I have seen this posted. Just like Simon, it is truly fun to see others eat … crow! (is that the correct way of saying it?)
David Archuleta
“Crush”
Few people hated American Idol cherub David Archuleta more than us over the course of last season. Steam would burst out of our ears as the potato-headed crooner let loose treacly ballad after treacly ballad, pandering to teenage girls not cool enough to like the Jonas Brothers. But still, Archie’s first dalliance into non-Idol pop is a welcomed surprise.
It gets funnier, read on…haha
http://www.blender.com/Listen-We-Really-Want-to-Hate-David-Archuletas-New-Single/Blender-Blog/blogs/1168/39631.aspx
This one’s a very touching letter to David from Chad of Canada… speaks volume of why we are what we are when it comes to David…
http://alwaysarchuleta.blogspot.com/
#219 – I have the same energy as when I was 16; however, when I look in the mirror, I don’t see a 16 yo – haha. Like you, I don’t apologize for my ODD; everyone who loves me comes along for the ride–if they love me they have to love David (j/k–but they have to respect my love of David).
#214 Bookaholic – beautifully said – “If you have a heart and an open mind, it is impossible not to love this kid.”
#211 jackryan – David is having such a unique experience in terms of meeting people and relationships this year at age 17 and has grown so much in 6 months. To me the photo is sweet and supportive–don’t see sexy though but I’ll keep looking–haha.
kizzi, it’s not so much that the pic is “sexy” it’s just that David is not afraid to touch anymore…he is no longer the shy, kind of timid boy we saw on AI (after “IMAGINE”). The way his hand is holding her back with his hand opened in a protective way just looks intimate to me and intimacy is “sexy” sometimes. I’m sure he didn’t mean it to look that way. ( or did he?)
#214 Bookaholic: Thanks for an eloquent description of connecting with David. I was similarly besotted, but I came from a slightly different direction. I am surrounded by music. I listen to music constantly: classical, world music, bluegrass, jazz. I teach music in an elementary school, I compose music for my student chorus. But when I stumbled upon David by accident last May I was thunderstruck. I remember thinking – this is what music is all about, that deep, transcendent connection. I too see his gift as a combination of a physical voice, a deep connection to the universe, and the sweetest, most joyful face any human being could have. He is just “a kid who loves to sing,” but he has the power to grab your heart with the unconditional love that permeates his music.
On a lighter note: my daughter and her husband dropped in unexpectedly the other night. I was home alone cooking for a party the next day. I had David Archuleta blasting full-bore through the house. They walked in with an expression of “Who are you, and what have you done with our mother?” When my daughter asked who I was listening to, I had to confess the whole thing: that I had actually watched AI (no one in my family has ever watched the show), that I loved the music of DA, and that I had traveled on my own to three AI shows. My daughter, bless her heart, was sympathetic and was enthusiastic about the David videos that I later sent her.
This blog has been a wonderful refuge for me to listen and to post and to process all these strong feelings about David’s music. I raise my glass (of champagne of course) to Rascal for letting us safely gather here to share and discuss all things David. Rascal, please don’t let the crazies get you down.
You got that right silverfoxe! The David that is awkward, giggly, shy, dorky and ticklish-to-the-touch is the David who we all find cute. But when he is confident, sure, accepting, with palms open as shown, now that’s hot! Nothing malicious about it. In fact I find it sweet cos he is being protective. Sweet… and sexy, at least to me.
# 221 It is good to read that people are saying good things about David’s music, we all KNEW that day would come. But the snarky comments are almost painful for me to read. Why do they have to say cruel things even now? Is it jealousy? Or that they were wrong in the first place. I just don’t get it!!!
silverfoxe: I saw the vidoe of you in the parking lot with CRUSH blaring from the speakers. AHAHAHAHAHA. That was TOO FUNNY. I DO THE SAME THING DRIVING AROUND TOWN. If I pull up to a stop sign or people are diving next to me I turn the volume up and roll the windows down. I am so glad to know I am not the only one. As I see veryone here feels the same way I do about David. Thanks All.
How I feel and what I wanted to say and find it difficult to put into words has been so eloquently expressed by all of you here and all I can say is thank you all.
It is very gratifying to know that there is a champion for David in Canada. Chad Hunt’s letter to David is very touching and speaks for most, if not all, of us.
As for that picture, I think David was trying to support her back. She had both her arms behind the barricade, and would have her head on his shoulder without that prop. Our boy sure know how to act gentlemanly without embarrassing her !
Rascal, I love your site, it is airy and bright as opposed to that which is eerie and dark.
debra 5354…yeah it does hurt…but you know it’s kinda hard for some to eat crow so even when praising David, they have to say nasty things too. They do it so they don’t choke on the crow they’re eating!
Yes, I am the “CRUSH CRUISER”, and proud of it! My 15 mins of fame!
ok, rascal. this is gonna be kinda long (and yes, i’m gonna use “texting abominations”- sorry!)
i am SO ANGRY that supposed fans of david have been attacking u. i mean, ur like my favorite article writer, because on some of the other sites, the articles kinda creep me out. i mean, i love david, but some 50 year old chick kissed his neck. veeeery inappropriate. i know that would scare me. and some articles on other fan sites make me roll my eyes, because people can get carried away and over the top. they’re like, “go buy 50 copies of crush!” i mean, i think its irresponsible for the fan sites to be telling ppl to do that kinda stuff.
but u rascal, ur like my safe haven. i LOOOOVE u, even though i dont know u! i mean, i even emailed my sister about u, just to see how great ur articles are for herself! i’m a HUGE fan. anyway, ur site, to me, was a place where the crazy or over religious or overprotective fans of david would NOT hang out. basically, i THOUGHT it was free of closed minded folks that flock to all the other sites.
i mean, i get really disturbed when i see people drone on about how david’s faith is such a huge part of his appeal, and how they’re so gl;ad hes a mormon. sorry- but david’s faith is probably my LEAST favorite thing about him. to me, it causes all these over conservative fans to flock to david- not a good look. those kind of fans wont tolerate anything non cookie cutter from david. plus, i feel like it wont allow david to be free in his artistic expression. i have nothing against religion- i just dont think its gonna help david at all- its only holding him back.
i strayed from my point. sorry. but u and i both know why they get mad at u. and that, is unacceptable. i always try to stay away from those kind of closed minded people who discriminate against people for things that they dont even understand. unfortunately, david has fans like this. i just wish they would STAY AWAY from ur site and give u, and the rest of some peace. this site isnt for ppl like them. i would probably be cussin them out right now if i could.
sorry for my babbling rascal. i’m just SO ANGRY that ppl dare pick on u on ur own site. dont worry rascal- i’ve got ur back. love ya!
There’s an interesting article written from the perspective of David’s paternal grandfather:
http://blog.archuletafans.com/david-archul…huleta/#more-21
It contains information I did not know about, a little more about his background and how his singing came to be.
djagirls,
I hear you, totally. I am also not crazy about the religion aspect to David, mostly because I do not support many of the beliefs officially espoused by his church. I’ll be honest that I am a very liberal Christian.
I personally have no idea where David stands on issues important to me, and he did once tell someone that he was accepting of gay people, which I found encouraging. I think that the religious aspect may hurt David as well….being that if he makes life choices that some of those audience members don’t agree with. I’m not saying that he will, but he’s human and he’ll be making his way through life that is sometimes messy, so he’ll learn through experience like everyone else.
I will go out on a limb to say that I am actually glad that David is traveling and meeting all types of people after being raised in a rather closed environment. David performed once for Republican Orin Hatch….but honestly I don’t have an idea where he himself stands politically. And looking back on that age, my beliefs changed rapidly between age 18-21. David may not go to a residential college, but he will be traveling and it will be good time for him to just experience the wider world and figure out himself. If he is a strong person, he will stay true to himself despite what pressure he gets otherwise.
I can say, though, that I have been most impressed by the LDS people that I’ve met on a more casual basis. I have a friend now who is LDS and I admire so many of her values and her decency. Just when you get into the political and social issues that I feel …eeek because I am so passionate about certain issues. And I know just like any other church, there are Mormons across the political spectrum.
I’m sorry to hear, Rascal, if youv’e gotten some flak. I like how you just say what’s on your mind, and there needs to be space fo all types of voices, just like David has all types of fans.
#231 djasgirl: I love your fiercely protective comments about Rascal. I have very similar feelings, but you have expressed them better than I could.
#233…calm down girl! hahaha…and just so you know, there are lots of cra-zeh people on this blog…and I’m a FREAK! Just ask rascal…he’ll vouch for me! hahaha! And if you’re going to be a Regular, good, cause I want to learn your “texting abominations” so I can be HIP and freaky.
ps…I personally don’t think David’s religion is “holding” him back. He does not talk about it…the most he’s ever said is that he has a strong faith. Other people bring up his religion and I am guilty of it too. I just wanted to more about it, what they can & can’t do. It didn’t mean I wanted to convert. I was curious. But you have to understand that
his religion is a very important part of David, and like you, it worried me when too much was written about it…it would have been the same even if he was Catholic, Baptist or whatever. And that’s the cha-ruth, as we say here…
silverfoxe, you’re right that David rarely talks about his religion. I’ve noticed that, too.
That article about his grandfather is interesting. Apparently Jeff was set to make a full-time career of touring and performing, but his dad (david’s grandfather) sat him down and talked him out of it!
Freo, I can’t access the article link. I get an error. Could you repost it please?
Hi, people. I assume it’s okay to leave this link from Fans of David–http://fansofdavid.com/?p=1660#comments. Mary from that site wrote a thank you to David and invited others to post theirs as well. She is going to print them out and personally take them to David on 9/11 when she attends the Evansville, IN concert.
I haven’t written my post yet, but I will for sure. I thought that maybe others from here might want to take the opportunity to say something to David. You know he’ll read and treasure every post. Some of them that I’ve read thus far are really sweet and tender. So, if you’d like to get anything off your chest (haha), here’s your chance! Rascal?
)
You can the article text posted on:

This is the article with an interview with David’s paternal grandfather. I’ve also never seen his paternal grandmother shown and the explain mentions what happened to her.
my post did not make sense! The article mentions what happens to his paternal grandmother. I did not realize that his father (Jeff) had not only a music background, but also theatre, too!
Bookaholic..I’m going to the Evansville concert myself and I hope this time I can at least say something to David without choking..and give him the gift I had for him in Lex but was too hypnotized and mesmerized to do anything but stare at him, but I promise, he couldn’t tell I was staring…but that’s old news. That’s if he comes out to the barricades….you never know. Anyway, I’ll post something for Mary to give to David. Thanks.
I’m listening to Radio Disney.
Voluntarily.
No further proof is needed that this kid has ruined my life.
Oy.
“Ruined” as in, made me very happy…
that music just now…awful! But great to hear David. He is so thoughtful and insightful, a well-spoken young man.
MCL, I hope you’ll be ok with me posting this. During the LKL interview last week, it was revealed that the idols would be participating in the Stand Up 2 Cancer (SU2C) program on Sept 5. The show will be televised on CBS, NBC, & ABC. The challenge is to raise at least $2100. The team has raised $1100 so far.
An Angel by the name of Pecan Pie started a team (CRUSH KIDS’ CANCER – ARCHIE’S ANGELS) on the website http://www.standup2cancer.org/. If anyone would like to donate to a charity in David’s name, please consider this one. The site states that the team with the highest donation will get their team announced on the show. There are a few ways to donate (phone, online or mail).

link for Radio Disney 8/25/08-edited-includes David’s comments and the song Crush. His comments about his fans and why he sings is heart-warming. He is getting savvy and polished in his interviews without dimishing his authenticity.
Kizzi, Thanks so much for the link to the Radio Disney interview. David is an articulate, charming young man. I love how he talks about his fans at the end! I love this boy!
Just downloaded David’s gig on Radio Disney….he was fabulous! He’s just getting better & better, and he’s loving every minute of his life. There are no words to describe how I felt listening to him. He is so real, so honest, so generous in his praise for everyone else, for us, his fans. I know he reads his fan letters, hears fans tell him how much they love him and his music, but I wonder if he really knows the depth of our love for him as an amazing human being apart from his music. I’m listening to him just talk, no singing, no music, and I still get chills. Maybe it’s because we’re hearing him express himself like never before in these interviews. There’s no pretense, there’s just David. I could listen to him for hours.
I also saw a video from Houston and he was clearly not feeling well. The humidity must have been stifling cause he was sweating quite a bit, You could tell he feeling miserable…and I know he doesn’t want to disappoint his fans, but he really must take care of himself. I understand there have been a few times when he couldn’t come out to greet his fans due to PRESS and the fans, while disappointed, didn’t riot or burn any buildings, so I think if he doesn’t feel well, he shouldn’t force himself to go out…and the fans should understand. I know I’m sounding like a mom here, but i felt bad for him. I know Jeff may have tried to talk him out of going out to greet the fans and David being David didn’t want to disappoint his fans. Of course, his performance was superb per the videos, so he felt better by then. But as a mom, I know of what I speak…he should listen to me!
I want to begin with a sincere and heartfelt “Thank You” to rascal and everyone on this site. I have been lurking in the shadows since the very beginning, but visit here throughout the day – every day – not wanting to miss a word.
I was apprehensive about posting because I do not possess your ability to so clearly articulate what I feel; however, what I have learned over all these months is that I do share your ODD. I promised myself I would follow David’s example and leave my comfort zone and join in by yesterday, my 60th birthday. Well, I missed it by a day but only because I am blessed beyond measure with friends and a family who kept me busy the entire week, especially yesterday.
I am at a loss for words in expressing how much joy (and validation for my ODD) you have all brought into my life. My experience is rather limited in participating in discussions in cyberspace, but I truly feel like you are family to me – a very special family. Feeling accepted – and safe – among a group of highly intelligent and fun loving people whom I have never met is very rare indeed.
My admiration for David has triggered behavior that has caused all who know me to just give me a bewildered little smile that says, “Who is this woman and what happened to our typically reserved friend?” …..but I have yet to follow the example of silverfoxe, but who knows the effect all of you will eventually have on me!!!
Yaaaayeee! We got another one to admit her addiction….that she suffers from ODD! and we are here to help in any and every way we can…unfortunately there is no 12-step program devised yet for this glorius addiction but even if there were, no one would want it cause ODD JUST FEELS SO GOOD! And, don’t you worry archiesfan4life,(love the name), you came to the right place! If you aren’t yet hypnotized, mesmerized and cra-zeh, buh-lieve, me you soon will be. hahaha!
This Disney interview seems like a bit of a turning point for me; David is articulate and poised, on point and totally in control of the interview. He was polished, but maintained his youthful authenticity. And if you had any doubt of David’s devotion to his fans, he dispels them in spades. I felt like he was “growing up” in the 18 short minutes of the interview, and it made me really proud.
archisfan4life, I am so glad you have decided to add your comments to this wonderful website. In so many of other people responses, I have found feelings and experiences that mirror my own. I swear it took over 20 minutes to organize my thoughts into words, the first time I posted here. Double checking spelling and grammer and did I use that word properly? lol. I am so glad that I did. I’ve enjoyed the discussions that have taken place on these boards and the feeling of camaraderie
that I feel we all share.
Forgot to say buenas noches, hasta maniana , translation: good night, until tomorrow or morning. ( the correct spelling of tomorrow or morning in Spanish is actually m a n a n a with a squiggle over the first n but I don’t know how to put a squiggle there so I spelled it the way it sounds) That explanation is for all you teachers out there before you notice my error. The reason for this little Spanish lesson is because DAVID said Spanish was his favorite subject, well his second favorite…so you know we all have to learn SPANISH……JUST KIDDING! And anyway, I already know it. ha ha ha!
HAVE A GOOD NIGHT ALL!
My goodness… just listened to the Disney interview. I was grinning ear to ear the whooole time! He sounded so good, so alive, so animated and so having much fun! Am also glad he has licked the cold – heard he wasn’t feeling well during the Houston concert & people couldn’t confirm what was it – I was SO worried.
About the interview, it is all about the music and the fans. THUD.
Goner… am totally a goner for this kid. Sigh.
rascal,
Can we get a new post? Anything (David’s immaculate fingernails, David’s nose, David’s diet…) just so we can get a new picture and article from you!
From the Disney interview: “I can thank the fans forever and it still wouldn’t be enough.” BACK AT YA’ DAVID!! It’s exactly what I told him in one of those message books that are going around to get to him. That was a wonderful interview.
Perhaps this new glimpse at a fun loving David on stage in Dallas will inspire Rascal to post a new blog. Here’s PTSTM…watch for it at the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6B7JYqS9aU
Oops, that’s PDSTM (Please Don’t Stop the Music) folks.
I loved hearing David on Radio Disney. He is definitely getting so much more talkative, as if he is bursting with so many things he wants to express. He is experiencing so much, has been going through so many different new experiences, the tour, the album, the new single, #1 on iTunes, #2 on Billboard Hot 100, his fans, life is so full, his dream becoming reality. It is so cool. I am so touched by the degree to which he acknowledges his fans. I really feel like we are going through this journey together, not just him over there and us over here. He is one special person and I am a fan for as long as he continues to make music, and really beyond.
lotus_b – Great video. Loved the ending.
Is that the ArchuCookie dance? J-14, September issue, does a small piece on David and Cook called “Bro-mances.”
OK, I have to hear David music now–my genes are ravenous–lol.
That ArchuCookie dance – haha! But wait! I know that step!! Isn’t that the jason yaeger stance that Simon found horrendous?
Jackryan – I just read where all 10 did the move. Jason Yaeger apparently was in the audience. What fun!
Haha… Should have known.. should have known… I bet that was Cook’s idea haha… am just glad to see Archie having more fun.
Wow, I met Jason Yeager this past summer in his hometown. Where did you hear that he was in the audience? I bet he had fun catching up with everyone again. He and Michael Johns were roommates and he had nothing but good things to say about Michael and our David.
Freo–I think it was in the youtube comments or maybe at Rickeys.
Morning! For all who haven’t yet heard CRUSH on your local radio stations….it has begun! YES, CRUSH is being added to the playlists and regular rotations in stations across this land of ours! And for those who will be hearing it for the first time…take a deep breath, have a paper bag handy in case you hyperventilate, close your eyes, picture David singing and ENJOY! It will be one of the most exciting experiences you will ever have…You will laugh, cry, scream…but be careful if there are other people around cause they may panic thinking you’re having some kind of “fit” ( yeah…fit of pure ecstacy!!!). Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Aaww..I can’t see the “David’s” dance moves til I get home after work. Video access is blocked at my place of emp. Good thing cause I would spend the day watching David all dang day! I would get fired for sure!
Maybe I’ll get “sick” & go home…actually I probably WILL get sick…sick of waiting to see the “David’s Dance”. What am I thinking????
Just to reiterate what everyone else has said, THANK-YOU RASCAL! You have always been “spot-on” when referring to anything David. I look forward to your posts the most. Reading responses to your posts, has sometimes caused me to want to respond with all kinds of expletives! Needless to say, swearing has gone to just about nil in my vocabulary!
#268, silverfoxe, give me your shoulder so I can cry on it. I have been anxiously waiting for that moment I too can hyperventilate into a paper bag upon hearing David’s sweet voice singing Crush on my local radio station (in SF). I just got a reply from the program director “Hi,We are aware of the song but generic emails from marketing and promotions firms make little impact.” I wrote back explaining I am a big fan writing from work which is design firm, not a marketing or promotions firm and asked if fan requests do not make an “impact”, but nicely so I don’t piss him off, though I wanted to. I also wrote one of the DJs knowing full well a DJ can not make song decisions. She was nice and replied almost simultaneously as the PD with “I keep forwarding the requests to the Program Director. UnfortunatelyI’m just a DJ and can’t make any of the song decisions for on-air. I hope we’ll play it soon. I like it!” So can I please cry on your shoulders for now?! waaah! This is only one of the stations I wrote to and I don’t get any replies.
vermeer: I’m going out-of-bounds here a bit, but if you were curious to actually meet another David fan who lives in SF, send me an email. We could get together for coffee. LzKeefe@aol.com
davidfanLIZ, not out of bounds at all! I would love to, honestly! I’ll send you an email. BTW, the program director wrote back apologizing that he mistook my email for “emails from firms hired by the labels. I also get cut and paste type emails from the fan clubs, Clay Aiken started it. When they all are so similar and stations in other markets are named it is suspicious…” Now I know how to better craft my message.
vermeer…I feel your pain…but never fear, it will happen, I promise. I made a call to the radio station 99.7 here to find out if they keep audio clips from previous shows and to see how I could get the clip of me almost hyperventilating. He said they probably don’t have it anymore..boo-hoo! but the good news is that they have added CRUSH to their playlist & rotation. Most of the POP stations are actually part of a huge conglomerate which owns stations nationwide, so CRUSH will soon be heard in all markets…per the DJ I talked to..And he laughed at me again…but that’s ok, cause he said he liked the song, so I forgive him. I think the best thing is to request the song AFTER they add it to their playlists during their “request line” time. Some may disagree with me, but we’ll just annoy them if they don’t have it on their playlist. We don’t want to have another Clay Aiken situation in our zeal for David and that’s the CHA-RUTH!
rascal….where, oh where art thou??? We, your ( and David’s ) loyal subjects are missing you terribly! Just as we hunger for any and all news about David, so do we hunger for your wise and prolific words. Please…SHOW YOURSELF, please! Even though this is coming from me…I’m sure I speak for all….
Sincerely, Me ( aka Freaky Dee, thanks to you ).
