The Album Cover

The Album Cover
Um. Wow.
Update #1: While I’m gathering my thoughts (and picking my jaw up off the floor), I give you the following as a soundtrack for your comments on this topic. In honor of the new album cover, the following has been selected as the notingDavid Executive Steering Committee Theme Song.
Those of you on the Steering Committee, you know who you are.
Update #2: Wherein Rascal redeems himself from his initial, slightly less-than articulate, “Um. Wow.”
Okay, so, I’ve given this a lot of thought and I’ve made my decision. I don’t like it. I love it. This image telegraphs something very specific to the market. Not just from David but from his producers, from his label, from the very people who are tasked with the rather significant responsibility of saying–especially the first time out– “here’s how we think you should consider this artist.”
And the overall message? Serious.
Yes, gosh-dang-it, yes!
It would be easy to talk about things like street cred, or thug rep (if David could look like this in certain areas of my beloved Brooklyn, he’d do just fine), and that’s all well and good, but I don’t think that’s the prevailing message. Seriousness is the message the market should be getting from David’s label on his first time out, even if some of the music is light and fun. This man, despite–and in addition to–his young looks, his tween appeal, his boyish charm, his wholesome lifestyle, and his initial pop-music leanings, is an artist to be taken seriously.
I know all you Mrs. Robinsons out there (God love you) are seeing smolderosity in this picture. And goodness knows (as do most others) that I can see smolderosity in David, too. But I’m not seeing that here. Not nearly as much, anyway, as I am seeing a combination of maturity, sense-of-purpose, real depth, and a degree of certainty that just isn’t possible from lightweights. No, in fact, I suspect that Jive was probably somewhat surprised when the proofs from this photo session arrived; they very likely wanted, and got, a wide range of attitudes and expressions in a variety of outfits. But if this is indeed the official cover shot, then I suspect Jive saw something in this image that they might not have expected to see.
In fact, their surprise may have been perfectly consistent with their experience with David in the production of his music. It’s hard for me to believe (despite the desire that Jive reportedly had for him, and the allegedly good deal he got) that they really and truly had any idea what they were getting. Not, in any case, to the degree that his more serious fans had an idea. I think one of the reasons the Jive marriage has been rocky (and it has), is because Jive had expectations of David that were easily exceeded at every juncture. I can imagine a scene where an underling goes running to management to report, “he’s not doing what we’ve asked for,” and management, after listening to the product of what’s been going on, replies, “You idiot! He’s doing ten-times more than we asked for! Get a better producer!” Of course, that’s just my imagination. But I wouldn’t be surprised.
The release of this image–whether or not it’s the official cover image–is to my mind yet another indication of Jive’s acknowledgment of David as a serious musical artist. It plays against type, but it’s not a misrepresentation. We’ve always all been so amazed at how David can be such a sweet, genial, compassionate, lovely person when he is with fans, or in any situation when he is not singing, and then suddenly, in performance, he turns into this powerhouse of emotion and strength and hunger and pain and resolve and integrity and intelligence. This remarkably serious, intense picture is perhaps the only picture we’ve seen so far that actually captures the David who sings.
And, okay, yeah, he’s hot. Coo coo cachoo.
OK….Yowzer!!
*OMG*
Not only does this give me the distinct feeling I’m being cruised
, but I think it’s a smart move by Jive.
I think they’re consciously transitioning from his “tween heartthrob” image into his “young artist” image with this cover. I’m sure they’re aware a number of people dismiss him simply on the basis of his young good looks and will not give him a chance when it comes to appreciating his music. This will broaden his appeal.
(To be clear, I meant merely that the cover is definitely attention grabbing! Many a soul will turn around in a music store and see those eyes! And remember: life-size cardboard cutouts! Squee!)
Wow, really amazing. Is this really the cover (or a wishful facsimile?) Either way it’s wonderful.
I came back to this site to get some ‘good’ vibes because I’d been to other parts of the internet and read some ugly things about David that made me sad. I’m thankful for this safe place to come and renew my feelings about David Archuleta. I guess some people are just not able to abide his goodness, otherwise I don’t know what their problem is.
Rascal, thanks for be such a wonderful support for all things David Archuleta.
Oh-oh…he doesn’t look like jail bait anymore! This could be T-R-O-U-B-L-E!
>>the distinct feeling I’m being cruised<< BWAAAH HA HA HA HA!!
Classic and priceless. ronaldsf FTW.
Joner — I said to Josie: “Well if we thought THIGHS as a topic was edgy, all bets are off after this.”
I don’t even care that he can sing…I’m buying the CD just for this cover!
*THUD* Oh My Goodness.
coo coo cachoo, Joner
Rascal – LMAO!!!!
Yeah rascal #7, I think you should have saved your previous headline for today’s new, ahem, development.
Or maybe “Burning Through the Plastic”? LOL
Amazing.
When did those pecs happen?!
Great color for him as well.
Now my daughter will understand my obsession.
Oh drats, I actually scrolled back and looked after reading the pecs comment. I’m gone!
Okay, were they going with serious, tortured artiste, or, parents, lock up your daughters?
All three, with an emphasis on the latter!
I think I need to go to confession.
Is this for REAL as the album cover?!?!?!
oh my
Ah keep it stupid, simple… I mean keep it simple, stupid – less is more?
The eyes definitely have it.
Rascal, that theme music for this thread is PRICELESS!!
Well now, I don’t know what to say… LOL
One word comes to mind.
Fierce.
Wow, holy sh*t! Great photo! I love his eyes and I’ve always had a soft spot for his serious look.
lol… what a hoot…GAWD, rascal… the Exec. Steering Cmte. Theme song. Um, that particular rendition pretty much sucks the “hot” out of anything that encounters it. LOL. If the mission was to cool us down…um… mission accomplished. (Have any Simon & Garfunkel?)
Hilarious theme song!
Allow me to just say the following:
Look at the planes of his face, the green of his eyes, the tone of his skin, the broad shoulders.
Oh, beautiful boy.
the green in his eyes… and the “make my day” in his eyes
I don’t know what to say…I’m speechless! Does’t happen often..only when I can’t close my mouth!!
Actually, the vertical lines made me think of two things immediately:
- jail bars (what a bad boy!)
- and the Streets of San Francisco opening credits.
Don’t know what that all means.
If that is in fact the final album cover, then clearly it’s a calculated move to completely remove him from the AI image of giggly kid. COMPLETELY.
Oh my. Look out world.
beebee — #22 — LOL, you don’t think there’s a method to my madness? LOL.
never underestimate the rasculator
first reaction: OMFG… and I don’t use that language anymore (DA’s influence on me)!
second reaction: ROTFL (after listening to the theme song!)
Thanks for making my day!
Rascal,
Would you be able to tell me where I can get MP3 downloads of david singing at the Ford Center?
I just want to share my comment on the “album cover” I posted on other blogs:
Ok so here’s my take of the “album cover”: David here looks just like a teenager – fresh and young, yet his eyes exude deep mystery and utmost elegance and the contour of his face and lips are simply classy and bold. The maroon background and red shirt just brings out that impeccably perfect marble texture of his skin and may I also say, the shoulders and the chest express that Armani physique enough to launch a million women to space and make the men cower in envy saying “wish I was him.”
Ever notice that his look on the “album cover” is so similar to David’s picture (the one with the tan coat and the red bricks background) that appears on Rascal’s “Gallery Show” on the left.
street cred factor: tilt
ha ha..my son & his girlfriend are watching TV in the livingroom and he wanted to know WHAT IN THE HECK I was doing and why I was listening to a “BROADWAY” version of “HELLO MRS. ROBINSON”? Don’t tell me, he said…it has to do with David…again..right? I just said weakly…uh huh…
SGI-
I read your comments on another blog and I totally agree. The majority of people commenting on that site don’t like this. They all want David to look younger – smiley little boy David. This scares them a bit. He’s not a baby anymore. I was suprised at the venom over this photo.
This picture(if it were to be the one used) is NOT a representation of David at his best. He looks sick with flu. I can’t believe all they have done in photo shoots and come up with this! UGH Poor David. I am sure David and Jeff will get final approval, but PLEASE not this! He has Thousands of pictures shot of him that are way better. PLEASE! I am a huge David fan , this is a shock. Sorry for the rant.
Please someone EXPLAIN this to me. Is this a joke? Or am I out of the loop. I would have liked him in a full body pose in casual jeans/tee/Jacket with some reference to some of the actual songs portrayed in the scene. Maybe I am stuck in the ’70′s………
Rascal please make some sense of this? I trust your judgment. ok I will stop for now.
Um, Rascal…Mel’s really ticked.
Honestly, he has no sense of humor whatsoever.
Oh my, those eyes will hypnotize and mesmerize all — how can anyone not buy the CD? hey, hey, hey
Betsy #35, yep there’s some division in the fanbase over this photo, and you hit the nail on the head as to why.
But HELLO, he’s still David! And this will definitely broaden his appeal.
I have to agree with you Betsy. This is just one of David’s many forms of expressing himself. Actually, if your familiar with the Twilight saga books by Stephanie Mayer, with this expression David is showing in this picture, he easily fits the description of one of the main characters (Edward Cullen). And I’d like David to play that role in the Twilight movie coming this November. Oh well, there’s always the part 2 of the movie to look forward to. =)
Another way to describe the cover in the words of Heidi Klum: “This is so high fashion looking!”
I think this picture represents David well!!
Many wants to see the smiley David, but that is only one side of him!!! When he is around people, he is kind, friendly, gentle
BUT, David is more than I happy boy!!! He is a teenager!!! and when he is singing, he is confident, sexy, mature, sigh!
Music brings his inner HOTNESS!!! This album cover shows the mature, confident, and hot side of DAVID!!! AND I LOVE IT!!!!!
We need to let David grow!!!! it pains, but I can’t wait to see what else is out there, he is full of surprises!!! and he never fails to impress me!!!!
And another thing! David is allowed to look sexy! This is him! How could someone NOT like it?
sgi – Not homesewn at all! LOL
I just got home from work. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!!!!
I haven’t read the comments yet…but I can probably guess.
and ROFL Rascal at your theme song!!!!! ahahahahahahahah!
Oh Rascal!! This is priceless – along with the music, I feel transported. I wonder what Simon and Garfunkel would think!! Anyway, the photo is beyond amazing – and I do think would appeal to a wider fan base!! I don’t know….it certainly caught my attention, (but of course, with David, anything does LOL).
i HATE it! i cant believe all of u like it! ugh! now, understand- i love david’s non-smiley pics- they’re my fave. BUT my problem w/ this picture is that it makes david look kinda bloated- i dont like the effect. plus, didnt he wear that shirt in the video? i mean, seriously- cant they provide clothes? the main problem for me is that he just doesnt look that good. i mean, he looks good, but he doesnt look as hot or sexy or cute as he COULD look. david is incredibly good looking to me- but in this pic, in my eyes, he just looks like the cute guy in my class. but david can look handsome in an EPIC way- like outta this world! i mean, jesse mccartney and chris brown look 10X better on their album covers than in real life. david’s album picture doesnt look as good as david himself does. i really wish they woulda used that single cd cover picture. i thought that one was hot.
sorry- i just had to rant- i cant belive u all like it so much! hes taken better pics with digital cameras under the hot sun! that aside, the cd cover doesnt even matter. i just want that album already!
Sick with the flu??? not representative of David? Come on Abrra, lighten up! This is most definately at least one side of David…he’s a chameleon..he changes acording to the situation but it’s all HIM! In this photo, I see a mature, ” know who I am, know what I want, are you with me? then come on!” kind of pose.
I’m wondering why it was released..could it be to get feedback on what fans really want to see?..remember, David does know what he’s doing. So whether you agree or not, just support his decisions..can’t say that enough!
Don’t post much but I wanted to chime in to say that I love that picture for his first album cover. He looks like a serious musician and it’s not as if everyone who has ever seen David doesn’t know his great smile. I think this totally separates him from the “just a teen” thing.
#34 silverfoxe, you mentioned your son, and that reminds me that I saw those David in Evansville videos that were posted on YouTube last night (by your son?) – complete with the “shoutout” to Dee. It was fun. Thanks!
Poor David. His first album cover and I can’t believe there is even one person who doesn’t like this. I never would have guessed it.
I can’t wait until my new gravatar kicks in!
One guess!
djasgirl, OK you are right about one thing…there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of photos out there of David..beautiful, sexy, funny, serious…but maybe David wants to seperate himself from all the photos that were taken up until the Ford Event..Maybe he doesn’t want to be just a beautiful kid anymore…He wants to taken seriously as collegemom said..
Fortunately a few “ughs” won’t deter David from doing what he wants to do. As he has said, everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to their opinion.
djasgirl and silverfoxe — I was actually going to make that point in my update. Read the update! But in any case, I agree. The number of sweet photos of David out there will be enough to last a lifetime–he will undoubtedly be providing them for a lifetime. An album cover needs to convey something that perhaps everyone doesn’t already know. Ideally, it needs to be art.
This is.
<—betsy-this one
hmpft thats my old one Ok you can be first
…(gasp!!!)…
I was totally taken aback when I opened this site early this morning. Then, OMG! Is this David? Just like you, Rascal. I needed some time to think about how I really feel about the album cover. At first, and I agree with some of you, this is not how we know the ever smiling David. I also had the thought that he might still have that cold during the photo shoot. Then, that scary feeling that he is capable of thinking dangerous coz it sure came out thru his face. Some more staring and I melted in his gaze. The softness in hs eyes are still there despite the somber lines of his lovely mouth. I was looking for that joy he brings to me whenever he sings. It’s somewhere locked deep in his eyes and you’ll only be able to fathom it if you know how he performs. The photo is seemingly so un-David, but he is there – in performance mode. He is a great performance artist and can bring out so many varied emotions and reactions from his audience, and it is caught so well in his photo stills and music video. This is no exception. The photographer who took this is far better than the one who took the previous so-talked about photos. Kudos to the art director as well.
And then, Rascal, you came out with your analysis. Total agreement! David’s stare will grab you even if you don’t know who he is. It’ll make you wonder what he is about, and it is surely a surprise for the non-fans who shrug him off for being young and inexperienced.
David is definitely one artist to ba taken oh so serously We’ve known that all along and this cover speaks tons of it. No doubt about that.
olemr2001..yeah, the video..I actually had to use my son’s acct cause youtube wouldn’t let me use mine! I downloaded two, one for jackryan4DA and the longer one, but it’s not a clear picture so I’m redownloading smaller snippets which should be clearer. I could kick myself for not keeping the camera right on him the whole time cause I missed some good shots, especially when I said “Hi David” after his “Hi Dee”. Oh well live & learn..maybe some fine day, I’ll be able to take more videos/pictures of David. Ah, keep on dreaming!!
rascal, Thanks for the more articulate update haha. I’m still thinking about this one. Yes… it’s David, the serious artist, but there’s a poutiness about it that just doesn’t work for me.
I have always loved David’s performance face, the intense, serious, piercing eyes.
Yup. This one’s a keeper.
I am glad to see I am not alone in my dislike of the photo. I don’t look too deep into all the ramifications of what and why Jive showed it to us. David looks sick. Simply said. Beyond that, I know there were other choices that could have been made in the same genre of”Hot. Cool.etc” In the long run , what I think matters not. I will buy the record.I will support David’s career always.
Good luck , David !
davidfanLIZ – I know what you’re seeing. Believe me, I know. One might almost go so far as to characterize it as a sadness. It may well be. Great photographers are not great because they know how to light and expose correctly but because of how well they engage with a subject about things that make them think and convey those thoughts.
I said to Josie that I thought this was possibly a very revealing image.
I’m all for revelation in art.
Remember how everyone was complaining about the fake smile in the picture on his official site:
http://www.davidarchuleta.com/
Ha! Well you got your wish. No corny pose here!
(Dang I hope they change that picture soon.)
rascal…your update, exactly the point I was trying to make but as always you knew just what to say…Thank you!!
I’ll be saying g’nite now all!
And to David.. Sweet dreams, be safe & secure in our love..forevermore! Siempre contigo!!
rascal, I agree with you that good photographers will engage their subjects, and I’m all for the revelations of art. This pix does reveal a soulful side of David that is very appealing. But…the poutiness remains an issue for me, and there is something unbalanced about the body and head proportions that just seems clunky to me, to put it poetically haha.
I love obsessing about this!
Yep, still loving it – for the simple reason I wasn’t expecting it! If I, a true, die-hard fan, didn’t expect it, then the naysayers who think he’s just a flash in the pan just might be inclined to buy the CD because OF THIS photo, if in fact this is the cover. It’s deep.
Yep, still really loving it. He had me at first glance on this one folks. Really.
“… it need to be art. This is.”
Rascal, thanks for writing stuff that I can’t put into words!!! I have to totally agree with you on this one.
sorry wrong grammar, should be “needs”
Oh, and one more thing – don’t think David didn’t have a hand in picking this or any picture for the cover – this young man is quietly assertive, of that I am sure.
mmmm “quietly assertive” — lovely! true!
I just got in from work after a long day, and I’m still recovering from the shock.
This cover photo is going to have to grow on me. Yeah, I know, some of you are going to be surprised that I’m not over the moon about this since I’m a nitpicky kind of person.
So, here’s the thing:
1. I’ve always preferred David’s “serious” poses; he’s definitely at his sexiest when he’s not smiling for the camera. However, this image doesn’t capture the real sexy serious look I’ve come to drool over.
2. Rabid has spoiled me something fierce because I expected more from Jive; this label had a chance to create something larger-than-life (just as djasgirl said) and this, to me, just seems like they’re not trying hard enough. Keep in mind that I thought their other photos that were pre-released looked like a bunch of amateurs had done them, so you know, JMHO. As Simon would say: “Sorry, not good enough.”
3. If they were going to use this particular photo, what about a real close-up, so instead of the head-and-shoulders shot, give us just the face, with a focus on his gorgeous eyes? (Something similar to what Elliott Yamin’s new CD cover looks like.)
What I’m grateful for:
1. They are taking David Archuleta seriously as an artist (they could have easily given us some Disneyesque cheesy cover of a young, smiley lil’ Davey type image). In this, I agree with you, rascal.
2. David is growing up! (Check out those pecs! Yikes!)
3. Jive is moving quickly to release info. on the album, so this is a good thing.
What I’m uncertain about:
1. Why in the heck is Jive reducing the airplay of Crush? That makes no sense to me, when this single could easily pass the gold mark in sales.
2. Does Jive still not recognize the precious jewel in their hands? David Archuleta may have emerged from Idol, but he’s bigger than that. Or, don’t they know that? The jury is still out for me on whether or not they recognize the diamond that they’ve got in the palm of their hands. Sure, I have no worries that they will treat him well and promote him towards success, but they don’t always behave like they recognize the legend-in-the-making that’s dropped in their laps.
Oh well. David still has time to wow the world. He doesn’t need to do it all with this debut album.
Final verdict: The album cover is cool enough, but it could have been so much better.
This picture just reminds me that there are many sides to David’s personality that we have yet to see.
In a way, it’s almost feels like a privilege that he has shared yet another dimension of himself with us.
hello gorgeous — Much as I love — love — Rabid’s work, for the purposes of an album cover–especially a first album cover– his work is too… I just have to say it (no disrespect, Rabid, you know that)… too gay.
What I love about this image is that David looks like a freaking boxer. A street guy. No makeup. No concealer. No airbrushing (well, that we can plainly see). No pretense.
The sheer nakedness of it is what captivates me. Plus the fact that it is so utterly different than every other image that has ever been out there on David Archuleta from Day One.
The more I think about it the more brilliant I think it is.
I just got in, too, and just about fell off my chair.
To me, David’s eyes are saying, “Think you know me? Think again.”
Months ago, I speculated that David could singlehandedly get people buying CDs again. … Silly me thought it would be because of what’s INSIDE the jacket. lol
May I also add that David is a natural actor. How else can you give smoldering looks like the one in his music video, then this? It is a pose so remote from the friendly, innocently humble and blissful aura he exudes during his time with his fans. I guess that’s why he performs his songs so well coz he can really get into the message of the song. I could just imagine that the photographer or art director was telling him to pose in varying moods, and they captured this precious no-nonsense, full-of-depth stare that gets you off-guard. Just like his signature smile. Gosh, David never fails to astound me.
#73 It IS because of what’s inside the jacket….
Oh, THAT jacket. Never mind.
Rascal, can you please post the picture of David with the red bricks background in your “Gallery Show” below the “album cover” so that the fans can see how good David really looks in a serious mood? =)
You know what? The concept of nakedness just occurred to me as a rather smart metaphor for David’s music. We’ve always all been so amazed at how David can be this sweet, genial, compassionate, lovely person when he is with fans, or in any situation when he is not singing, but then, suddenly, he turns into this powerhouse of emotion and strength and hunger and pain and resolve and integrity and intelligence….
Is this the only picture we’ve seen so far that actually captures the David who sings?
Ok I have to be honest at first I didn’t like it at all. BUT now I love it. I have to agree that it makes David look a lot older. I showed it to some of my clients and they all said that he looked like he was 22 to 25. They all loved it to. But how can anyone not love David.
I’m not totally loving the picture either. This one looks more like a rap album cover rather than a pop cover. It has that gangsta feel to it. I’ll work if they are going for a harder edge but it just doesn’t feel right with pop songs like “Crush”.
bakyspritz – the only reason that “serious” has evolved to mean “gangsta” is because of temporal cultural trends. It would be wrong to play against “serious,” if that’s what is called for, simply because it can be interpreted in that context.
“Is this the only picture we’ve seen so far that actually captures the David who sings?”
Yes
and I can’t wait to hear what the music will be inside that cover!
Okay, you’re right, rascal, Rabid’s artwork has that “gay” over-the-top ethereal quality to it. But what I was suggesting, using those images of David in comparison to Jive, is that, at least you get a sense that Rabid worked hard on those creations. This album cover? Not so much.
But, for me, a close-up on David’s face would do the trick, and then it’s all good from there.
Like I said, this cover shot is going to have to grow on me. I like it, but I don’t love it.
Technical question, rascal: how do you embed audio in a blog post, the way you did in this one? Thanks in advance!
Do I like it? Absolutely!!! I saw tons and tons of shots of David and I don’t know if this was one of them, but I can tell you that I saw some similar with this “look” and I really really liked them…When we were looking at them…I really couldn’t put my finger on it, but just knew that this “look” was my pick…this may not even be official, but personally our family likes this cover! We give the Archuleta’s our full support…like I know all of you do!!!
Go Big “D”…
Awesome, Brett, so delighted to hear it. I just wrote to Dean Kaelin and asked him to deliver the same message to “the Team.” The image is fantastic. I’m thrilled that you agree!!
I’m actually even more delighted to hear that Team David — and most assuredly David himself — like this picture. It’s thrilling to see that David is willing to branch out and challenge himself.
This album will have diverse musical styles on it, and his public image will showcase all the different sides of David. Classic R&B, modern R&B, pop, ballad, Latin, and then you get his serious side, playful side, romantic side, socially-aware side, musical side, goofy side, etc., etc.
The more David reveals of himself, the more he is an enigma. The world will be intrigued. I’m so excited for what’s to come!
Ok before I have a chance to read all of the comments and even before I can say rascal great write up, I have to say Holy moly, I am melting!! I love this!! With the previous photoshoot I was in the same camp as hello gorgeous, I was not as enthused with the look and feel of the photos and I hope this is from the shoot he had in NYC that David talked about in one of his blogs. He said the photographer had really good taste in music and he had great fun. So if good music was being played during the shoot, I was imagining that some great stuff was happening and if this is from that, I am sooo not disappointed. So on this one, HG, I am feeling differently. This is sophisticated.
I understand stuff like this is at least 50% subjective, so I can see the different reactions. But still, he looks sick? Not to me, oh no! This is David. But that’s ok, there were photos I wasn’t crazy about that others have loved. So it goes!
Ok, now about Jive doing right by David. I couldn’t agree more. This sends the message about what his record label regards him as, if they really go with this image or something similar. A serious artist. Which makes me so happy all around!
Sondra # 81
My thoughts exactly!
This photo reminds of the ‘Love me Tender’ David. He looks intense, serious, like he means it. That’s the singing David, not the giggly, bubbly one that put some people off. I mean, we all love his smile and positive outlook on life but that’s not the artist. JMHO! Some of his younger fans seem to hate this photo, though. Oh, boy!
I LOVE it!
Let’s be honest, the reason so many of the fans don’t like it, is because it’s not what you are used to seeing in David….it goes against type. Got news for ya….we haven’t SEEN even close to all that David is or will be. For all David’s openness….he’s very private. He reveals what he want’s to reveal and in his own time and way. I’m pretty sure his middle name is “Stubborn.”
We, as his fans, will buy any danged thing he puts out, regardless of cover. What David needs is to grab the non-fans or those who…. perish the thought…haven’t a frickin’ clue who David is. If I didn’t know who he was and was browsing in my music store or online and saw this pic….I’d do a double take and give it another look…pick it up in my hands….look at the song titles….maybe give it a listen. That’s what David needs the cover to do….not please his fans…but entice the impulse buyer… or those who think they don’t like him to give him another chance…to think of him in a different way.
Besides….you KNOW there will be smiley pictures on the INSIDE of the CD. LOL! Maybe on the back, so the buyer can go….. WHOA! Is that the same guy?!
Holy Smoldericious, Good Lord, this picture is SMOKIN!! David when did you get that neck? I noticed you were getting barrel chested, but Lord Have Mercy, you are growin’ up fast…………..I am surprised by yet another “dimension” to our beautiful boy. boy??? hmmmmm…
My “teenage” daughters love it…
Hello:
I haven’t commented in a long time but I have been staring at this pic and I decided that I love it, love it, love it! Contrary to some comments here, I think this is SO David. This is David the Performer.
Brett, so happy your daughters love this picture. Please give David a thumbs up from us.
What a day to rejoice! My Boston Red Sox just clinched a playoff spot in the American League! Hey Fe, maybe we will meet your Cubbies yet in the World Series!! Yea, what a great day!!!
I LOVE this pic of David for the fact that we’ve all seen TONS of cute, smiley David. To the buyer of his CD it suggests an invitation to experience a more mature side of David. To his fanbase it speaks to multiple transitions – end of AI to solo endeavors, teen to legal adult, and sweet, safe singing to raw and edgy. Also consider that from all the performance pics from the AI tour, while we all swooned over blatantly gorgeous ones, the really outstanding pictures were of him singing intensely – the outstretched arms for the ending of Angels, the hunkerdowns for Apologize & SBM, and the “FLYYY” from WYSYLM. As Silverfoxe suggested – let us all support David’s instincts in the decision-making aspects of his album. I am POSITIVE he would have the last word in selecting the cover art of a secret dream he has harbored in his heart all these years in spite of personal and physical setbacks.
BTW Juliebug – fell out laughing over your post – sooo true!
I love this pic…I love the comment he looks like a boxer….HE does!
This was very unexpected ..this pic is just so ..wow..what? !
I am crazy about how vulnerable David looks. He is just looks so different but in a good way.I really am glad that Jive is changing things up a bit taking a different direction– to me this is all very positive. Not that I want David to change but expanding his appeal is a good thing. I love the happy, giggly side of David but I like that this picture says .” I am ready…here I come” …I am loving it ! OMG— the red shirt and those green eyes…..too much!
hello goregous…sorry but Jive is decreasing the air play of Crush? What? Why?
What I like most is that this picture pleases the older fans. When I saw it I immediately knew some of the younger ones would not be too happy. But as much as his smile is to die for and I can’t go very long without seeing it again, this does send a statement that I’m glad they are sending. “I am a teen pop star, but I’m also so much more.” The dichotomy of David.
I’m looking up ‘smolderosity’ in the dictionary. I do believe it should be on David’s wikipedia page if it isn’t already
I haven’t read the commentary and may well be in the minority, but not only don’t I not love it, I don’t like it. Shocking, since I love pretty much everything David. To me, it says Jive is trying to manipulate David to fit some mold they’ve devised. I love David, and this isn’t David. When was the last time you saw David with an expression like this on his face? Never? Yeah, never.
I’m okay with a serious vibe, but I want a David-like serious vibe. And, from what I’ve seen of my guy, this ain’t it. Also, David is gorgeous. They must have had to take a thousand pictures to find one that wasn’t breathtaking. This one is okay, and David is anything but ‘okay’.
I really hope they don’t use this picture on his album. It isn’t flattering, and it isn’t David. Just my two cents…
I agree that there is something about this picture that I have not seen before … maybe it is so raw… stripped down…I am not sure but I couldn’t be happier !!
Forgot – sound track! Who knew such cheese exists? On par with “Crush” played by digital violins.
I love this photo! The colors are great for him, and the lettering across his chest makes his shoulders look very broad.
His eyes are stunning. They remind me of those photos where no matter where you view them from, the eyes look like they are following you.
In this photo, his eyes are like tractor beams – drawing you to him. As someone else has stated ‘resistance is futile.’
love the theme somg…LOL!!!
song…dang…song !
“powerhouse of emotion and strength and hunger and pain and resolve and integrity and intelligence….”
Just pondering. Just . . Wow.
I love this cover; it is organic; it invites one to discover what is within, to dig deep and understand. A message cover.
Josie #68 – I completely agree with “quietly assertive.”
valbraz #88 – My 12 yo granddaughter says that is the look he “gets when he goes to that place where he sings.”
kizzi—organic— I like that !
You guys are hilarious:
archu_adorable #100 — “Crush played by digital violins” and “smolderosity,” ??!! and
kindredspirit #101 — “his eyes are like tractor beams” ROTFL to infinity.
ojs759 — LOVE your avatar pic.
Seriously though, with this image, David challenges you to look past his cute, wholesome image to the depths of feeling and intensity that lie within. (And then go back and giggle at his cute wholesomeness … lol.)
This photo says a lot to me. It says “take my work seriously”… it says “I have grown up”… it says “I chose this”. David said he really liked the shoot, the photog and the music they played there. He is such a talented actor and the camera simply adores him. I find it a quietly assertive photo and I love that about it. And besides, it takes my breath away.
thanks TOfan…good to “see” you!
One other observation, if you will. John Mayer is the one artist that David mentions constantly. This cover looks exactly like something he would have put out. Just sort of figures to me.
David is very passionate about music. There is alot of that in this photo. I wonder what song was playing at this moment of the shoot.
Well, lots of different opinions, but overwhelmingly positive.
My initial response when I saw it was “OH MY, THE EYES”
Fabulous expression, but it the entire photo does give the impression that he is bigger than he really is physically. But thats just because WE know what he looks like down to the last detail. If you did not know him, yes you would think he was older and bigger than he really his. I know its David and he’s beautiful no matter what and I understand they are making a statement and I understand this is “art”, but I have seen better photos of him. Just look at Bookaholic’s gravitar. I’m on the fence with this.
Rascal, that theme song had me actually burst out laughing.
))
Thanks, I needed that today.
I haven’t posted here in quite a while, but I have to say WOW. I applaud Jive and David for the risky photo. My feelings about change every minute. One minute I find it mature and powerful, the next minute I find it a little too intense, then I’m digging the smolder, then I’m thinking he looks sad and tired. I think there’s no way they would’ve picked a photo that would’ve satisfied everyone. I totally agree about avoiding a smiley picture. Part of me wishes that maybe the corners of his mouth were up a little bit, but would he then look like he was sneering? Ahhhh…This is what I get for putting Archie on a pedastal. He just has to perfectly live up to every vision I’ve had for him: album cover, songs, performances. haha. It gets tiring actually.
ONE thing I hope Jive does do: lighten up the coloring maybe or saturate it more, I dunno. I just wonder if it looks too dark around his eyes. Someone “saturated” it on IDF and it looked better. You could see things clearer, like the background texture.
Those eyes…
When I dropped in here tonight I had no idea this pic would be here and was so taken in… I could only stare and say wow … If this is his album cover, someone is doing something right.
I love the raw, edgy, deep. smoldering look. This is no Disney boy>
Brett – I just wanted to let you know how touched I was by your comment (#84) to my post in the “Album to Include David’s Writing” article. Thank you so very much!
BTW – I love the picture!
Despite the fact the I, and my two 20-something daughters LOVE the photo, I appreciate how you say he’s conveying “seriousness” as an artist. In my humble opinion, I think this is EXACTLY what a lover of “songs with a message” should look like. Love it, LoVe it, LOVE it!
It’s a beautiful photograph. He looks great as always.
But as an image for his first CD, i do think it’s a bit of a leap. I like that he looks serious and not smiley. But this thuggish, smoldering stare is unconvincing contrasting with his oh-so recent “aw shucks”, cheerful, “never been kissed”, “i want to make the world a better place” persona.
i’m all for showing different, surprising sides of David. But this is just not convincing to me. That’s my initial reaction. The photo doesn’t inspire me to look any further b/c it’s existence (as an album cover) feels forced. There’s no mystery, other than an initial shock of “oh gosh he can be so serious’.
Now that many hours have passed since I first saw the picture, I’m still in agreement with my first reaction – I love it. I know that it will never please everybody, but it certainly does me. The photo is much more along the lines of a CD I would buy, than any of his other photos. It’s mysterious and alluring and makes you want to know what’s inside. If I didn’t know him or his music, I would certainly be intrigued.
On another note, I showed the picture to my 17 year old son, (unfortunately, doesn’t get David). He said to me, “Wow, he looks totally different then he looked on AI and so much older.” I said, “He’s exactly your age.” He replied, “Well, he looks a lot older then me and on AI I thought he looked 12.”
Upon hearing that, it made me think that a lot of 17 year old boys, and maybe even girls, may have not wanted to be listening to music from someone who looked 12 years old – no matter how great they sounded. I think that Jive must have had that in mind with this picture.
The difference of opinions from regular posters here has me on the edge of my seat! I truly respect and enjoy the banter. Always enlightening and always full of love for David. My initial reaction was similar to my 25 year old son’s…”he kinda looks tough”! That’s what took me by surprise. It’s such a change from what we’ve seen. I consider THAT another BRILLIANT move on David’s part! This look will sell CD’s.
At first glance, I thought mug shot. But then I really looked at it and I love it. I like how they played with his name and his eyes really look at you. He has something to say. Those shoulders—eeeh!
David is a serious artist and he looks it. He was “little brother ” to Cook and the young one to all the others but he is ageless when he performs and this cover brings that out. This is not cute pinch his cheeks Archie-this is David Archuleta the brooding heartthrob.
1. First impression: Yeah, he looks like a vampire. I get tired of images that depict young people as though they were on drugs.
2. Second thoughts: Yeah, I do recall that he said he liked the photo shoot. No problem with the very serious look, I just don’t like the colors and the washed out skin.
3. Third time: Well, if he is tired of being mistaken as the ‘younger brother’ this should fix that.
I will totally trust him. ^_^
My 18 year old son just remarked, “Oh..he’s goin’ for the Gangsta’ look” when he saw this photo of David. I asked him what he meant and he said that he didn’t mean it in a bad way…just that the picture was so serious. He also said that he liked it, and he’s not even a fan of David’s.
As for me, I don’t really have an opinion yet. Guess I’ll just have to stare at the photo for awhile longer…like maybe an hour or two.
What are you thinking David?
“Come, listen and I’ll tell you.”
If this picture was done in bad taste…I will still pick it over Cook’s TOML cover.
I think this is a pretty amazing picture of David. For some reason though I don’t like him in the t-shirt here. I wish he was wearing something a bit more sophisticated but in reality it probably is a good balance considering the various audiences they’re trying to appeal too. As much as many people probably consider David a teen star his single Crush is also a top 20 hit on adult contemporary charts.
I wonder if anyone here has noticed the similarities between the look of our David in this cover with the look of Michelangelo’s David? Here is the link:http://vlsi.colorado.edu/~rbloem/david.html. I see the same raw youthful power, the determination, the promise, the beginning of a new journey on both of them. To me, this is a perfect cover for David. Whoever is doing the marketing for David knows David and knows how to sell David. David is in good hands.
Oh My Anne Bancroft! Not exactly sure where to start but I had to jump in at some point. After “careful analysis” I’m officially diggin’ the cover! I hate when I miss a couple of days here and things get all unruly without me. Rascal-Couldn’t get to a computer fast enough after your message (hours ago), and i just finally did. Now I get what you were sayin! btw Vampires definitely evoke that whole mysterious/sexy/dangerous vibe, so the couple comments I have read referencing the a fore mentioned I can only see as positive.
Wow, so many great comments and lots of laughs.
Rascal, do you really think it hasn’t been enhanced in some way– is that really his neck? Shoulders? I thought he was slightly more slight that that. Not that I’m complaining.
And, I for one, would buy his album if it were wrapped in butcher paper with “David Archuleta’s First Album” scrawled in pencil on it and a barcode stamped on top. However, as mentioned by others, it needs to capture the attention of others who don’t know who he is and I think this will get him taken seriously. It’s grown on me. It’s a MILLION times better than the “Crush” single picture on itunes.
Has anybody listened to Cook’s new song? You can here: http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00018544.html
A not-so-positive review:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/extendedplay/2008/09/david-cooks-rev.html
“It begins with a slow-dance piano, but Cook soon obliterates it, over-singing as if he’s bearing the weight of every bad love letter written in the past eight years upon his back. Or like an “American Idol” winner trying to prove he’s rock ‘n’ roll, if your first point of reference is Nickelback. … it’s easily ignorable.”
I like Cook as a person because he’s always been brotherly for David, but man, I just don’t … see it. But for Archie’s sake, I’ll be a gentleman and just keep it to myself. Best of luck to Cookie.
I don’t know why people think this picture is saying take me seriously. To me it gives off a I’m tough vibe. Perhaps Jive does want to take David away from his giggly AI persona which majority of people have of him. For that reason, the picture makes sense. I’m just looking forward to his singing
‘My 12 yo granddaughter says that is the look he “gets when he goes to that place where he sings.”
Kizzi # 105
Awww…Your granddaughter is wiser than many of David’s fans. She gets him! Some comments at another fansite got on my nerves! They seem to think they have David all figured out – like he’s some freaky sunshine boy! My last post there was not very friendly.
I was just telling somebody . . . the more I gaze at this album art, the more “painterly” it becomes. It definitely is reminding me of a particular artist (painter) and I can’t think who. (dang, it’s killing me…) I really love this album art.
caseydog I have only listened once to DC’s single. *sigh* I wish I liked it more.
A couple people are not sure this pic is natural for David, and I disagree. The thing is, he can be so darn sexy without intending it.
I’ve always gotten the sense that out of the public eye, when it’s just David alone in his room in his music, listening to Eva Cassidy and other artists, he IS very serious, quiet, contemplative. Some of his earlier teen pictures come to mind.
This strikes me as a very natural pose. It’s another dimension of David.
it’s really a classical posture, actually
I just LOVE being away from the blogs then to be greeted by something as … i still don’t have the word for it. But I have looked at the album cover for 5 minutes, studied it and here is my take on the matter:
My vote:
I liiike it! In fact, I was hoping that something like this would be used for his packaging. I will explain in the end.
Let me just share how the cover grabbed me after studying its visual elements & contents: the word INTENSE comes to mind at once.
BODY LANGUAGE:
Look at those eyes! They have that cool, steely gaze that lets you know he means business. Definitely not blank. There is something behind those eyes inviting us to discover! His shoulders are relaxed while his chest is open-forward which indicates cool confidence. A tilted head is a sign of interest or a subtle signal for flirtation like saying “I am interested in you”.
COLORS:
Red, brown and gray (2 shades) — all warm colors. Red connotes energy, confidence, passion, joy & luck. It draws attention and stimulates action, increases heart rate, respiration & pulse rate.
Brown represents stability and reliability. It is the color of Mother Earth and all things organic, natural. Used as the background supports the intention of drawing the attention to the bearer of the red element
Grayis the color of intellect, wisdom. It is perceived to be classic, long lasting, refined & dignified. So I find it particularly interesting that we see gray used on his neck that props his head and on his name (lighter shade – sort of marbled effect).
TREATMENT OF ELEMENTS:
Using the lighter shade of gray on his name with the special effects of extending the “i” upwards & and “t” downwards, to connect to the squared border or frame of the whole pic with the same color is simply poetry in motion. A square symbolizes stability, justice & honesty. It also represents such “quaternary concepts like (1) the elements—air, fire, water, and earth; (2) the seasons—spring, summer, winter, fall; (3) the motions—linear, vibratory, rotary, mixed; (4) four-letter names of God; (5) the archangels—Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Auriel; & (6) the directions—north, south, east, west…”
So I interpret the upward & downward lines connecting his name to the square as the heights & depths that his artistry can & will scale however, whenever, wherever and whichever way.
In the beginning I mentioned that I was hoping for something like this from Jive. So let me end with David as the last element of the cover. Now I have read that a lot if fans are disappointed with the cover design and would prefer the angelic, pretty boy David on the cover. But that is in the league of Disney, of he Jonases and Miley’s of this time.
David declined the Disney offer already. He would like to be taken as a serious artist. In his own words, Crush “is a sophisticated and mature take on a very simple subject”. And may I add that the arrangement of that song is no way simple! It is a difficult piece esp if done live.
Jive’s packaging here has that total pendulum effect! If the AI days of sparkling suits, blazers, make-up and scripted lines sway to the right, David in a simple red shirt & natural looking shot has finally swayed to the left.
Is it any coincidence then that the design of the shirt is mass of people? (hope am not wrong in what I see) After all, title or no title, isn’t David Archuleta the Idol of the People?
Thank you Jive for treating David with the same high regard us fans have given him.
And Rascal, thanks for highlighting this subject. And sorry for the long post. It seems I got carried away again haha!
Sorry, I have to vote – Strongly do not like! It just does not represent his spirit to me. He seems distant, and there is no “David” vibe present. It could be anyone. Rather than portraying who they want him to be, I just want to see him as he is – Smiling with that light coming from his eyes that inspires people. It just it not special enough for him. There is also a bit of a negative vibe to it, rather than a positive one. I really don’t want to envision what his mug shot would look like, but that is what this picture reminds me of. There is a guardedness there that is between him and the audience. Sorry, but I really really hope that this is not the album cover or I will be very disappointed.
Woahhhh. Wow. Woah.
I love it. Regarding the composition itself, I think it’s the absolute right move. jackryan #135, I love your review. The vertical lines in the title treatment of his name to suggest the heights and depths of his artistry…you read my mind. At first glance, I saw the lines bleeding off the page to suggest that there is a “to be continued” beyond what we can visually see.
The red shirt…the same one from the Crush video. A thoughtful touch, if intentional (I hope).
ascphil #56: “The photo is seemingly so un-David, but he is there – in performance mode.”
I completely agree. I’m reminded of the interview when David remarked about how people presume all the different directions he should go. Just like that interview, his expression here shows a gentle rebellion, yet definite conviction, saying “No, I’m going to do THIS.” Just when we thought we knew what to expect for a cover — signature smile, laughing eyes — he continues to peel the multiple layers that is David Archuleta, the artist and in turn, the image. Always keeping us on our toes, that boy.
I’m more anxious than ever for his CD. Rascal, any chance you can make that countdown clock go faster? Please?
And of course all of you are asleep! Oh well, as a rejoinder to Rascal’s theme song of this thread (LOL), I will do a David!
Hold on tight
Oh he’s a little bit dangerous
He’s got what it takes to make ends meet
The eyes of a lover that hit like heat.
YOU KNOW he’s a little bit dangerous….
(from Roxette’s Dangerous)
This picture really caught me off guard. And I love it. This may not be what David’s fans expected or wanted to see, but I think the album cover needs to speak to the audience out there that hasn’t discovered David yet. And this, to agree with Rascal, definitely says “I’m here and I’m serious about my music”.
I can imagine those who saw David on AI but didn’t connect with him looking at this picture and thinking, “wow is that the same kid?” and hopefully they’ll give his music a listen at the same time. I disagree with the sentiments of those who don’t like the picture because they feel that it’s not David and it’s something artificial that Jive wants to put out there. I’m inclined to think that this is actually another facet of his personality that David wants to show us. I can easily believe that this is the expression he has when he’s sitting down to write and work on his music.
What’s really great about this picture is that it represents to me what David wants his music to be, which is real. There’s no mannered posturing, no forced smile, no ‘beauty’ lighting or spiffy model clothes. It’s just the man in a simple t-shirt and he’s looking right at you with that intense gaze of his. It’s pretty cool.
And if this is the final cover, or the direction for it then it makes me very optimistic that no Disney-esque pop tracks will be part this album. This album will be full of quality stuff…seriously.
First impression: sadness.
Doubletake: SADness??? From David?
Second take: injured. Like, from an insult or something. (Like, from not being taken seriously?)
Third take: toughness. Whoa, never would have expected an intense “don’t mess with me” look for this. Definitely a different side being portrayed here.
Fourth take: Geez, no more beautiful being on the planet today. Or before or since either. WHO CARES what expression is on that face?!!
Fifth take: …swimming around in those EYES! those. eyes. those. eyes. those. eyes. Somebody, please come fish me out!!! glub, glub glub….
At this point, I’m with Joner… “there are many sides to David’s personality that we have yet to see”, but with one tweak–we’re seeing a LOT of them, suddenly, in this one photo.
ronaldsf #133, I agree with you in that I also feel this is the David out of the public eye, when he is alone in his private world (of music of course!) and also I do think back to some of his earlier teen pictures.
Brett #84, Howdy BTW! You know David very well and if you say “I really couldn’t put my finger on it, but just knew that this “look” was my pick”, that’s big and I have to trust that you see in this something that IS indeed David even though us fans may be surprised by this “new” look, with some reacting positively, and some not so positively.
After looking at it again and again, I understand, intellectually that is, what others (the ones who are perturbed by it) are seeing and feeling, but I honestly still don’t find anything objectionable seen through these eyes of mine.
Design being what I do for a living, I do get picky about design. The single on iTunes has an image I do not love and the type treatment is just awful (sorry, don’t mean to be harsh but it’s true!) and most likely someone just threw something up there with very little to no thought. That is my strong guess. This cover design by contrast was not thoughtlessly thrown together. While I’m not crazy with the bad letter spacing in some parts, overall it’s nicely done.
So hello gorgeous #82, I have to disagree with you. While I don’t know if there were a lot of hard work that went into it or not, this was created with a fair amount of thought and effort on the part of the designer/art director and photographer, IMHO. And no offense to Rabid, much as I like the choice of David’s images that are chosen as starting points, I prefer David’s image to remain more or less untouched (i.e. not doctored), but I understand it is the look, that hyper real quality the artist is after which in turn becomes somewhat surreal and dream like.
Anyway, all the differing points of view are very interesting considering they all come from David’s fans. Different strokes for different folks!!
addendum – in case it wasn’t clear – I like it! There is so much depth to it, which is just as it should be.
Thanks for popping in Brett! I knew, JUST KNEW, David had a hand in picking this pic.
I just wish some of his fans would open their mind to see deeper into the soul of this picture. Its simplicity is its brilliance. It is serious not sickly. But I’m still of the ilk that people who assume David is “aw-shucks” sweetness and such, will be stopped DEAD IN THEIR TRACKS and not only take a second look, but just might pick up that CD and buy it – because this picture says: I’m not who thought I was – I’m so much more-check it out if you dare
Jackryan-loved your analysis post. It goes great with a cup of coffee
“um, wow” RASCAL ROTFL!!!!! This is too much fun, really. Talk about eye candy. How am I supposed to go on livin’ after seein’ them lips? Sweet Creator of compact enchilada torsos!!!!!
I love love love this picture as the album cover. I think it is brilliant. It conveys the opposite of “little”, “sweet,” “adorable” etc — adjectives tthat always appear in the same sentence with his name. If he had something to do with picking this picture, now we know what he feels about it. Who is going to look at him in this picture, if they have not seen him before, and think I want to pinch your cheek? lol This is the look of David singing. I love your take on it Rascal.
I’m a frequent lurker, but first-time poster to this site. I was surprised to read the mixed reviews of the cover art. I love it, and I think it’s the right direction to go for David. Some of his die-hard fans may not want to see him without a huge smile on his face, but the cover art isn’t going to dissuade them from buying his music. As some of the previous comments mentioned, this image will broaden David’s audience and appeal.
When I look at the image, I think he looks self-assured (but not cocky), strong (but not thug-like) and intense (ohmygod, those eyes). His expression is nuanced…subtle. I think that’s why so many people see different emotions in it.
Did I mention that I love it?
Autum and her cousins (ages 7-12) were all full of ooohs and aaahhs with loud squeals of delight that brought me to the computer to see what it was all about. “David Archuleta is “hot” in this picture ” they all chimed and giggles persued! There’s a new kid in town!
#135 jackryan4da – I loved your analysis and soaked up every idea and then went back and re-examined David’s cover. I loved it when I first saw it–it completing intrigued me–so multi dimensional, simple yet highly complex–I after looking at it through your eyes, I love it even more.
#141 vermeer – I agree with you about the iTunes cover for Crush. In fact when looking at them side by side, are we even talking about the same person?
#131 valbraz – i think for some, a certain look is critical; my 10 yo granddaughter said that he looked older and definitely not like the Jo Bros who are one of her and her firends favorite singers. Then she printed out this picture (enlarged) on the color printer and placed it smack dab in the middle of her magnetic board in her room
#139 lotus_b – My sons, 21 and 24, both like this cover and asked that very question–”that’s David Archuleta?”
I’d buy his CD for the music no matter the cover. I certainly play with the smolderosity element and appreciate beauty; Haven’t had the parental reaction to David. This cover’s beauty is elemental and raw and, for me, a mystery to unravel through the songs on the CDs. My oh my, my christmas gift receipients are not going to know what hit them this year when they get the CD.
just saw your previous thread!!!!! Rascal – “No, I’m not talking about thighs.” I could write a whole blog about those babies!!!! (notingdavidsthighs?) LOL! “And, okay, yeah, he’s hot. Coo coo cachoo.” I love it when you go all fanboy!!!!! ROTFL!!!!!
By the way, has anyone commented on the elongated I and T – hmmmm….”IT” – brilliant
OooooooooooHHHH!!!
Well, let me collect my thoughts which are struggling with my gut. My mind is saying one thing and my gut is reacting in a totally different way. But I will leave some of that aside for now. As is possible to look at this somewhat dispassionately, I will say
Ummm, I played with the picture. I pulled up the picture with only the neck and head showing and then when I pulled up the rest – BAMMM!!
World- This is DAVID ARCHULETA . I think maybe some of us will be uncomfortable with the picture because he doesn’t look like our sweetie and some will like it because we see what we think is another side of him. I am in the second camp.
I think it works on the level that it will definitely get the people who have never heard of David or who saw him in American Idol to consider this new artist. Which I think is what David wants. He needs to broaden his base because ultimately he wants to keep doing what he loves and to reach out to so many more people with his music. He has to sell his music to do that. And I do not believe he is doing anything that he, David, does not want to do. And I do not believe he is pretending to be something that he is not. I have watched David and in some unguarded moments and not so unguarded moments there is steel and resolve and passion in those eyes. Remember finale night. I somehow also see vulnerability. How does he do this? What a very complex young man he is.
It’s time to cut loose from the apron strings and make it out there in the world.
I am admiring him NOW MORE THAN EVER.
P. S. I am crying, yes, because I not too long ago was able to let my youngest fledgling venture out on his own. But that is what we raised our children to be able to do someday. Sob…
#135 jackryan – thank you for the detailed analysis, loved it.
#141 vermeer – thanks for your comments as well
#133 ronaldsf – “It’s another dimension of David” Many others have also commented on this. This album cover picture has evoked a mydrid assortment of comments and if and when David were to read them all it might, just might ,be making him smile and say ‘Look what I just made you all do!
He is making us feel all sorts of things just by looking at his album cover picture. What is in store for us when we will actually be able to listen to what is inside this album?
I can’t wait!
#151 ram – “there is steel and resolve and passion in those eyes.” I completely agree, always has had the fire and steel in his eyes.
I think we have seen his velvet exterior for the most part and now we see his backbone of titanium forged in fire and ice.
P.S. Sent my last baby off 4 years ago; there is an empty space that we then have to fill and as much as we are overjoyed to see them confident and strong in this rite of passage, it is also sad. Funny thing is, for me, that I seem to have a stronger bond with them as adults and as I let go of the primary parent role and become the sage advisor and accepting unconditionally of all that is happening in their lives, we are closer than I could have ever dreamed. Warm thoughts to you!
“…and now we see his backbone of titanium forged in fire and ice.”
Wow, Kizzi, you’re a roll, today! Can I get a witness?!
I’m squarely in the “lovin’ it” camp. To me, he looks serious rather than tough and confident rather than provocative.
I understand that we fans adore David’s happy nature, but I agree with those who believe this is the image he should project to the world who doesn’t already know and love him. He is much more than a giggly kid. He is a superb artist. I believe this message is conveyed by this cover (and those eyes on this cover.)
I know some have mentioned ‘sickliness’ and I’m wondering if the coloring might play into this perception. I’ve seen the photo on different sites, and on some, his skin tone is slightly green. Our computer monitors might increase or decrease the green cast. This problem shouldn’t exist on the actual CD.
Wanted to add: if I had to use one adjective to describe David in this picture, I’d say “soulful.” He looks soulful, and good Lord, if Jive sees David in this way, I am even more eager to get my hands on that album.
Bring it on, Jive and David. I’m ready.
I think.
I think it’s a nice photo. If it’s *a part* of a bunch of photos of David, I’d say it’s a nice inclusion.
I just don’t care for it as an album cover for his first CD. I know many people here interpret a lot into the picture, but I just see it as rather one-dimensional. It might be a dimension that we’re not used to seeing him, but that doesn’t make it complex.
His eyes *are* soulful. But they would be soulful in any pose.
Who knows. Maybe that was the best pic in the photo shoot that they could come up with. So we might have just got stuck with it. But I just see the cover (not necessarily the photo) as trying a bit too hard.
hey rascal – I think this photo is somewhat of an acid test for the fan base.
It has sparked lots of dialogue and pushes us fans to examine our perspective. Yummy food for my ever hungry mind!
For me, this pic is the David I saw in my head during AI and the aftermath. When I saw the pic for the first tiime, I thought: “there he is.”
Heavyblow — Are you sure it’s not just the “rawness” you’re uncertain about? You’re saying you’re not getting depth (I certainly do), but can you honestly say that you find this superficial in some way? I really like the rawness aspect a lot. There have been plenty of highly-polished approaches to his image (virtually all of that water-marked shoot from a couple of months ago was full-up glam to one degree or another), and while I think some of that is beautiful, I find those images far more superficial than this.
Kizzi — RE “acid test” — I agree. They are definitely interested in what the uber-fans have to say. But as many have commented on already, this image is less for the fans than it is for the wider public. I suspect they want to see if they get core fan-base support for the strategy. I think they’ve got it!
Interesting article referencing “Crush”:
http://www.biconews.com/?p=9586
If college journalism students are digging it, David’s doing alright.
Wow! I’m speakless. This picture shows how absolutly handsome David is. His skin is just perfect and it says alot that he’s wearing red! Red is a very powerful color and he wears it well! Oh, and I can go on and on about the eyes!!! Fangirl scream!
heavyblow, kizzi
I see your point. Try as I might, I don’t think I am being very dispassionate after all. I think all of us bring our own perspective to what we see. And none of us truly knows David. So maybe this is all a lot of speculation.
That’s why I post the word “think” alot. Cuz I really don’t “know” for sure.
Kizzi-
Your PS is right on the money. I experienced the “new” connection and role with my daughter when she left many years ago. There is an eight year spread between my 2 children. I am now starting to experience the new role with my son and I never believed that my children could continue to enrich my life anymore than they already had. I am blessed. Still it’s hard, cuz I miss some of those things being a Mom of younger kids.
Rascal,
again, i should make it clear that i’m judging this as a cover for his inaugural CD, not the photograph itself.
yes, one can go on and on and interpret his eyes and what have you…
but what i mean is that as a CD cover, it’s one-dimensional in that it just presents ONE side of David, a side that we’re not used to seeing, a side, for me, that seems too fractional of David.
i’d rather see a cover that when looking at it, you can interpret SEVERAL sides of David. I was hoping for a pic that is sexy (like David can be), but joyful (like David often is), contemplative, light, pure etc.
At first quick glance for me, the cover is a bit of “surprise/shocker” (though I have seen him with that look before during one of the photo shoots on AI). It’s an image that would create a lot of talk b/c it’s so contrary to his pervasive image. But to me, shock (or even rawness) is not always encompassing and inspiring.
He looks great. But 99% of the time he looks amazing in photos. I think this would have been a better cover for a second CD, when he is more genuinely ready to cruise and make love to his fans.
Can we take a break to celebrate Crush sales numbers?
10 22 David Archuleta, “Crush” 90,005 75% 51,400 494,998.
Only 5 k shy of a gold status! Great news.
Oh…and VH1 needs to replace the dorky photo of David with the new red hot cover art right now!
On second thought, now that it’s a new day, I’m loving the album cover! (I told you I needed it to grow on me, and it didn’t take long!)
What had kept me from praising it yesterday was the t-shirt. I thought it was too casual a look, and considering the “serious” look he was going for, I thought the wardrobe people should have brought it up a notch. Not that I’m looking for ultra-formal or anything, but that sexy black shirt he wore for the concert brochure photo would have done wonders (with a lighter backdrop so David doesn’t look too goth in all black). It’s why I was willing to compromise and have the photo just be a close-up of his beautiful face.
But, I’m loving it right now, and David does look magnificent in red. It’s all good!
Oh, how I wish I have more time to write and write and write about David. I thought of writing a long analysis of his Imagine perfection and why it’s a masterpiece, but just didn’t have the time.
So, just a few quick comments before I dash off again.
1) great fan site, Rascal!!!
2) I have always loved David best when he DOESN’T smile, as I find his “serious” look is always more interesting and intriguing to me. I am guessing that his frequent smiles/laughs are a way of hiding his “insecurities” in social situations, not to say I don’t like his laughter either.
3) His style, from what he wears, how he looks, and his music has always been very intuitive and natural and he’s very secure about it. I love this album cover because it simply is just SO HIM: hip, confident, unique, and possessing an awesome knowledge and understanding of colours (for photos). To say he is photogenic is simply an understatement. He takes you in at a first glance of his pic and you’re hooked, and once the singing begins, well, you know what happens when the singing begins……
Why am I so late for this party? ggrrrr. Rascal: how about sending an instant message to all of us every time you post a new one?
Okay, I only have 30minutes, but I have to say that my initial reaction was different than Rascal’s. I thought it was too serious, tired looking but after giving it some consideration, I am liking it more and more and I have come to agree with you Rascal.
I also think that it appeals to a mature audience as well, and, as you can see, gives everybody something to say. People ARE going to be talking about it over and over again.
To me:
I mean it attitude,
I’m going to make sure you all get it.
I know you, but you really don’t know me,
I’m in this to stay,
I can see right through you,
I know what I am doing, trust me
highvervibe 140: glub glub I can’t save you, I am still laughing.
jackryan4DA 138: I’m singing it with you; and can we hire you to be David’s next album cover image consultant. Wow for your interpretation and wow for you analysis and wow…
np1107 ” Just when we thought we knew what to expect for a cover — signature smile, laughing eyes — he continues to peel the multiple layers that is David Archuleta’ That sums it all.
Yay! HG is on board! Start the engines!
panamom — That’s what the RSS feed is for. Subscribe to the main RSS feed in the sidebar to be alerted to when there are new articles.
#166/daisawesome – I am agreeing with you 100%. I am much more attracted to the non-smiling David too. Plus David has a certain smile I find a little of uncomfortable to look at. The smile on his old Crush cover is a very good example of that. It is not fake, it is just an uneasy, promotional, ok-I-have-to-smile-now kind of smile, a smile with no essence of David. I am so happy Jives knows better and drops that hideous cover.
The more I look at this picture, the more I think it’s the perfect cover for David’s first album. There are so many layers of expression and meaning in his face and eyes. I love the way the people are spread across his heart. It’s as if he’s looking out a window in that upper quadrant of the pic and seeing the world. This IS his look when he sings, when he lets us know how deeply he feels things and considers the world around him. I’ve always sensed enormous depth in him. I believe he has a capacity for great joy and great sorrow.
The pic seems to say both “Here I am” and “There you are.” I think it’s “We are here together” that matters most to him.
He is so rare in the world of entertainment. I wish he could remove himself from the entertainment industry altogether. But he needs it right now, if only as a launching pad, and he may even succeed in raising the bar a few thousand notches in the future.
Viva bello!
I found this site few days ago and have been lurking. Love the site, the layout, and mostly Rascal’s writing.
Popping in to say that I love this DC cover image. I think it represents David’s musical personality very truthfully with depth, maturity and wisdom. To me, David’s exterior (youthful, sweet, wholesome look etc) often seems to be a barrier preventing public who don’t know or follow him to see his true musical maturity. Jive knows that his faithful fans love his good look. But the good look, sweet boyish smile won’t help him gain new listeners/fans.
David wants his music, not his look, tell the story about his music. Through this cover, I am getting “I have something to say” “I am serious about my music” “give it a listen” message from this signer. This CD cover does its job perfectly.
rascal #154, #159, #168, your comments are expressing everything I wanted to say!
• Kizzi #153 – “backbone of titanium forged in fire and ice”, WOW!! Phew! What a visual you are giving! Love it!!
• Again Kizzi #158 – re: acid test, I am thinking the same thing. Jive should now know this image is pleasing the majority of his fan base (see poll at FOD) and if it is causing some discomfort in some others, that could be read as a positive because it could mean it will appeal to those who didn’t like David during the AI season for the very reasons why we love him so much – his sunshiny awshucks cheek pinching cute adorableness. Lastly, this HAS TO attract the attention of those who didn’t even watch AI.
• hello gorgeous #165 it’s a great new day!! I’m glad you are warmed up to it! I am loving the double t-shirt look myself, it actually adds to the broadening of the shoulders I think and there is enough “serious” coming from David’s look, the casual t-shirt is a good complement. He is a young serious artist, or a serious artist, but very young. I like the contrast.
In the words of David, “oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” How could I have missed this most magnificent piece of art?
Rascal, as much as I feel uncomfortable admitting to feeling a bit Mrs. Robinsonesque when I spend much too much time staring at this picture–I must thank you for putting this here! It adds some much needed spice when the day seems rather dreary!!!
Interesting picture. The “MonaLisa” came to mind.
Here is an excerpt on the aestetics of da Vinci’s painting:
“…The woman sits [David stands] markedly upright with her arms folded…a sign of her [his] reserved posture. Only her [his] gaze is fixed on the observer and seems to welcome him to this silent communication. Since the brightly lit face is practically framed with various much darker elements (hair, veil, shadows) [David's hair, shirt, background], the observer’s attraction to Mona Lisa’s [David's] face is brought to even greater extent. Thus, the composition of the figure evokes an ambiguous effect: we are attracted to this mysterious woman [man] but have to stay at a distance as if she [he] were a divine creature. There is no indication of an intimate dialogue between the woman [David] and the observer as is the case in the Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione (Louvre) painted by Raphael about ten years after Mona Lisa, and undoubtedly influenced by Leonardo’s portrait.”
So close…yet so far. Perhaps a lightening of the background to reveal the full silhouette of David’s head and a slight hint of a smile to evoke the familiar yet project the edginess. Help me out here Rascal – until then it;s back into the ether.
Peace
I am no wardrobe or image consultant, but I would like to go on the record formally:
1) No more necklaces. He’s too gorgeous, doesn’t need them, distracts from him. Like the ring.
2) Don’t overdo working out the upper torso, neck is beautiful as is. More is not always better. Pecs and upper back, yes. Clothes lay better when not too built up though.
3) Definitely like the layering especially in strong colors. Dark brows, lashes, hair, green eyes and glorious skin showcased in stark black and white. Will always look superb in tuxedo and suit (with white shirt, of course). Remember those Beatle era shots.
Just my opinion but People Magazine would be lucky to have David grace their pages.
Heavyblow on #163
“…It’s an image that would create a lot of talk b/c it’s so contrary to his pervasive image. But to me, shock (or even rawness) is not always encompassing and inspiring.”
Perhaps that is exactly the plan? What better way to broaden David’s market reach than to present something that is unexpected? in a way that would “jar the senses”? I believe this packaging is catering to a different target market, without necessarily alienating his already captured market. After all, us fans are already sold on The Archuleta, are we not?
Someone once said that “pictures, like words, are abstractions of reality; just as we must bring meaning to words, so we also bring meaning to pictures”. As such,
pictures are not substitutes for reality, but rather are mediators between the perceiver and reality, and as to be expected, are open to multiple interpretations based on the prior experiences of an individual. So it could never be one-dimensional.
The inspiring and encompassing experience am sure will be taken care of by the music in the CD.
np1107, josie, kizzi, awestruck, panamom hey am glad you liked my inputs tho a bit winding. Haha
And Kizzi – yup the “IT” brilliant indeed!
This cover took a lot of brainstroming…
Just saw this at FOD:
Cover Art for David’s Debut Album Confirmed
This article from AceShowbiz seems to confirm the cover-art we were all discussing yesterday, as does this article from Idollive.net. Our poll, which yielded 1,252 responses in a just a few hours, indicates that the vast majority of you (69%) love the cover: an edgy, buff, older-looking David will attract new fans (particularly male fans) while maintaining and gaining new female fans with his striking features. Others were less impressed, hoping for at least a hint of a grin: as we know from the thousands of fan pictures we post here, David is rarely without his signature smile. Nonetheless, I believe this is a smart move on the part of Jive, and although I agree that even just the slightest shadow of a smile would have added to his appeal, I am relieved that the cover art is simple, casual, and presents a mature-looking (*thud*) David to the world. And I love the fact that the “I” and the “T” are drawn out, proving once and for all that David Archuleta is, indeed, “IT.”
Meant to say “I LIKE him wearing a ring.”
Jackryan
I’m not arguing about the marketing effect of the CD cover. How much the cover will move CD sales is remained to be seen and studied.
I just reacted to it on a personal level. I don’t feel the pose, or rather the choice of the photo for a cover, feels all that authentic. Even the “thug/smoldering” effect, David still looks like a little boy.
I accept it (it could be so much worse and there are many good things with the cover… colors, simple graphics, plain photo), but I feel that they could come up with something better and still move CD sales. But my friends always say that I’m a hard-a$$ at everything.
I love this pic of David. He looks like he is in deep thought about something. Intelligence way beyond his years is communicated through his eyes. Very intriguing gaze – I’d like to know what’s on his mind.
“I’m tired. Hope this shoot is over soon so I can take a nap”.
heavyblow #181 – That sounds whiny and immature. David is neither.
Okay, HB, we’re upping your meds.
#174 pensive – love the comparison. I have a life long passion and devotion to Renaissance art. I can see the Renaissance comparison with David’s music – an awakening or a re-awakening. Thank you for your comment; it gave me a broader perspective of David’s artistry.
Rascal: thanks for the rss update. Now I won’t be late for the fiestas.
Ok, I’m coming out of lurking to chime in here. I’ve been reading your blogs, Rascal, and find them very interesting, colorful and intuitive….I LOVE the album cover, it’s a different Archu-dimension, and agree that Jive certainly knows what it’s doing – trying to appeal to a
the twenty-something crowd, the guys, the college crowd. You can’t do that with a Disney-esque cover. The message is simple – take this guy seriously, you won’t be sorry. And I agree with all the other commenters who believe that David certainly had a hand in this selection. Someone in a previous comment juliebug #89) wrote, “I’ll bet his middle name is Stubborn.” At the very least, he’s determined. How else could he have survived the intensity of the AI experience? I have no doubt David knows what he wants and will continue to amaze us with his limitless talent.
I just had to add my two cents… the cover seems to have already stirred the pot.. and is going to boil right soon. I believe that if David did indeed have a hand in the photo choosing, it’s as if he himself drew a line in the sand and said..”Now, you think you know me… think again” type of thing. Not only will it melt hearts (mine is as I type) but it will peak the interest of non fans alike. We already know the happy, smiling, sweet side of David, this cover will prove that there is indeed more than meets the eye. Good choice Jive & David… your well on your way!
#171 – bike2tilden!!!!! Gosh have I missed seeing your screen name! I hope you’re well…
Oh darn, that’ll teach me for reading backwards – DAISAWESOME!!! Oh hello friend! Nice to “see” you.
#186 MsLemonade08 – ” ‘I’ll bet his middle name is Stubborn.’ At the very least, he’s determined. How else could he have survived the intensity of the AI experience? I have no doubt David knows what he wants and will continue to amaze us with his limitless talent.”
I have the absolute same take.
Please comment more often.
#187 Wallsberne – “it’s as if he himself drew a line in the sand and said..”Now, you think you know me… think again” type of thing.” Yes, yes, yes – spot on! There is indeed more than meets the eye.
Thought I’d heard my song
Hello Rascal, new here but I’ve been power lurking for a long time now. This is where I get my daily dose of ODD medication, 3-4 times a day, with or without food. XD
ETs are sending signal out across the universe with this picture of David…see link
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/ap/20080924/img/pot-archuleta-corn-maze-939-811e8b31c4dd.html
I think E.T. has ODD too.
Wow, I’ve tried really hard to control myself here at the new site, mostly lurking, rarely posting. But this one, yikes! He is definitely “telling it to us” just like he was to the judges the night he auditioned with Heaven. Seriously.
Rascal, at the risk of being beyond the boundaries, could we someday get an analysis of the boy’s mouth? I know the eyes, the skin, the shoulders, the pecs, the artistry, the smolderosity, etc., etc. But could those lips be any more perfect?
Note To Jive Execs:
You MUST NOT allow yourselves to be convinced to change this album cover photo! Do not be discouraged by a vocal minority of Archies who profess their dislike of this photo! For they are emotionally invested in a soon-to-be outdated image of David: the image of a Teen Idol sweetheart as seen on TV. Accordingly, they cannot possibly be objective here. This photo should be shopped mainly to non-AI fans (potential new fans) who fit the target demo.
In my humble opinion, this cover is a stroke of pure marketing genius. Yes, THIS sells. And, yes, THIS is also the true David. An emerging side of David. An adult David who will be a sex symbol for other adults.
Folks, the genie is already out of the bottle. Strap on your seatbelts and get ready for the ride of your lives. There’s just no stopping him now.
Hey Mrs. Robinson (#191), I love your avatar. That picture of David brought an instant smile to my face. May I ask where this was taken at?
I’m really enjoying the wonderful dialogue about the album cover. Yes, David is certainly a force in motion now…strapping in a ready for more great things to come!
heavyblow
I did not take that you were arguing either. In this space, differing views are always welcome and I don’t think we are ever inclined to convince people around here. That’s one of the things we enjoy in Rascal’s place (aside from being free to be supremely silly – right silverfoxe?
However, I am confused as to how you are relating the cover to the CD sales which is akin to your earlier sentiment that “shock is not always encompassing & inspiring”
My personal take is that the cover will only attract, tease… but what will move sales and may I re-state be inspiring & encompassing will be what’s inside the album.
And as for being a hard a$$ – you should have been around when I reviewed the video! I was so anal (excuse the pun) about 2 items in it, haha! Peace!
lotus_b (#195), thank you. My avatar was made from a picture taken at the after party in Evansville, IN. I’m in that picture but I decided to crop my silly self out of it.
Although I have enjoyed the musings here for some time, I’ve not been compelled to post until now. Hello to all!
I’ve done my best to take in the myriad of opinions already posted on this topic and hope I’m not repeating thoughts already expressed by someone else.
This announced album cover did not surprise me at all. It hit me with the same power as some of the very first words I ever heard David utter……during Hollywood week on Idol just before performing “Heaven” when he looked directly at the interviewer and stated, abiet with a smile, “I’m going to make them understand.” To hear someone speak with that much confidence and determination was breathtaking and this cover, to me, illustrates that perfectly. Cudos to the photographer who was able to capture that on camera!
And, yes, I’ve seen this side of David on many occasions……every time he sings.
Jackryan
“Arguing” i meant “making a case”, not like fighting.
anyway… i was responding to your statement:
“Perhaps that is exactly the plan? What better way to broaden David’s market reach than to present something that is unexpected? ”
which i thought was about the cover effecting increase in CD sales. i don’t know if this cover will broaden the base (which means more ppl will buy his CDs) and that wasn’t my concern.
it might very well be an excellent strategy and will attract more fans, but that doesn’t automatically mean that another type of cover *won’t*, or that another more nuanced cover won’t even sell more CDs. i’d vote for this cover over his “crush” single cover for sure. But there are many different possibilities in between and beyond.
I was simply looking at this cover as a work of art and as a representational photo for David’s inaugural CD. While the cover has many good things going for it, the pose (and the choice of having that pose for the cover) feels limited and a little contrived.
There have been a lot of talks about the cover, but I feel it’s b/c the pose is a surprise. OMG David looks so serious and “mature”, and, gasp, “sexy”. (I for one was not surprise that David can look this way, I’ve seen him in glimpses looking like that )
But brushing all that initial surprise aside, the pic is not all that convincing in trying to sell whatever the image that it’s trying to sell of David. I just simply don’t buy it. Also, as I said before, by choosing this image, Jive seems to try a bit too hard.
I know that it’s hard to pin down a specific image of David, him being 17 and a genius, to present to the world(because he is so many different things). This is why I was hoping for a more mysterious and encompassing photo for David’s first CD.
Not this overtly pointed, rather one-dimensional, picture.
Fans of David has posted a picture of Elvis beside this one. The article is very interesting. I have been reluctant to compare Elvis and David because Elvis did his slippery slope. But David has a great family and a brother and sisters to keep him on keel.
Personally I would rather compare David to King David who slew wild animals while young (Star Search) and auditioned for and was chosen by King Saul (American Idol). Then he wrote songs(Psalms) we still find tremendous comfort and inspiration in reading and singing. Go David! We are eagerly awaiting your album.
I agree as usual with heavyblow, but I am not drawing the same conclusions. I rather think there is plenty of time for David’s image–not to mention his music and his public persona–to become more multidimensional, more nuanced. This “overtly pointed, rather one-dimensional picture” is precisely the blunt instrument needed to counter the images, impressions, and assumptions perpetuated by that show. Are the shadows and highlights here too intense? Probably. Is the mug-shot stare lacking in subtlety? Perhaps. But this first foray into the marketplace without the mantle of that franchise needs to be a response. I think it needs to sort of knock people over the head; to shock them into a question or a new way of thinking about David Archuleta.
The problem is that some people are superimposing their own emotions and feelings for David–and more importantly, how David MAKES THEM FEEL–onto this simple promotional photo. It’s not about us, it’s about David’s commercial success! Let me repeat: it is NOT about us! Indeed, David MUST achieve the commercial success BEFORE he can gain any clout to convince Jive to do anything. That’s how it works! David must build up the street cred first, and then the flexibility and authority/control will naturally follow.
I won’t argue the point that none of us really know David (not because it isn’t true but because it isn’t worth the risk of hurting anyone’s feelings), but I do feel confident that David will stay true to himself.
But you have to understand that he is growing up before our eyes! He is becoming a man! This is natural, we cannot hope to stop it, and we should not want to try.
Indeed, it may be hard for some to accept but change is a given in life. The cover pic captures the emerging maturity in David most brilliantly and will likely appeal to BOTH men and women. And that’s an important point! Most potential (new) male fans would never, ever even touch (much less examine) a CD in sitting in a music rack, the cover of which consisted of another man goofily smiling back at him whilst sporting a crazy kiddie t-shirt and reclining in a most uncomfortable position!! Ahem. Women, on the other hand (especially those 18-30) will likely find this pic mysterious, penetrating and…um…rather alluring. Most women like strong, confident men, and David appears to possess both of those qualities in spades here.
Finally, David is producing some contemporary, hip music, so his album cover should reflect the same vibe. And it does!
EUREKA!
There were some portraits of musicians done for the Vanguard Press (Burlington, VT) in the… sheeze… ’70s I think . . . but I can’t find any trace of them online. (Apparently the Vanguard went *poof* not that long ago). I thought the photographer’s name was Marion (or Marriette or something like that) Etlinger — but google is giving me nuthin’. Anyway, some of them were really OTT and others less “out there”, but I always loved them. David’s cover gives me the same kinda thrill. I really just love the whole “album art” vibe I get from this cd cover. Gives me chills. Artist/Musician/Album fine art photography is a long tradition and genre in its own right.
I have not been able to get out of my head this sense that David’s album art reminds me of an artist (a painter) — and still I can’t pinpoint what artist I’m thinking of. Thus far I suspect (oddly enough) that it’s Picasso. This may seem a tad sacrilege to some (even me, frankly, or at least surprising.) It could be my Picasso rush comes from a combination of the whole thing about David’s “thick” features — and Picasso himself has (had) the same kind of “thickness” going on, so maybe I’m thinking of the artist himsel. BUT — if only I could find what I’m looking for — there are some paintings or studies where the male subjects are rendered so solidly and “thick”, and firmly planted on the ground. An their presence is so immediate and arresting. There are two in particular that I swear exist that I’m thinking of but I canNOT find them. They may exist soley in my own mind (such as it is) lol… Phew, so glad I got that off my chest, because it has been rattling around in my head since I encountered the cover art. To add to the heresy, I did this to the album art. I just had to do it. . . because… I could (?) lol (there really oughta be laws associated with the use of photoshop filters) ::::ducking from flying rotten vegetable matter::::
http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l347/beebeepix/David%20Archuleta/tript2.jpg
Btw, I’m not thinking this liberty I took with the image conveys the “Picasso” thing I’m stuck on. But kinda cool anyway. The original is an arresting and telling portrait that I have to believe does exactly what David and Jive were aiming to do. IMO, It is brillilant (of course.)
ok, I’m outa here… )
rascal, it is OK to do this? i know this is not exactly up to the writing standards of this post but if it’s not OK let me know i won’t do it again. thanks.
Well, the following little tidbit is not Disney (well I don’t think it is) nor is it Gone With the Wind but it is precious. Oh, to be young again. And ladies and gentlemen, I will confess to imagine that David will make somebody very happy one day.

Beebee you are so expressive. I cannot match your words but I definitely get a feeling.
Is it Picasso or is it Diego Rivera? That bounty, that luscious curve, abundance in features. Is that organic? Those full lips, thick, dark hair and eyebrows. I don’t know if that is what I see?
Wooh, but he is beautiful! Just to die for.
Rascal..your words here..
The more I think about it the more brilliant I think it is.

is what I was feeling but could not put in writing. Thank you. I love the pic exactly as is… I am so happy this pic was chosen if indeed it is the cover.
ram — #205 — yeah, I have to say, I’m not a big proponent of fanfic. I’ve put a pretty strict moratorium in here on discussion or speculation about any aspect of David’s personal life that he hasn’t made expressly public, and fantasy of this sort falls pretty squarely into that category for me.
Very good point. Thanks will definitely keep that in mind for next time. Sorry.
Rascal on #201 – YUP — the pendulum effect!
Rascal, you’ve taken the words out of my mouth…though, you’ve made them much more articulate, haha. I completely agree. David’s a true star! This is a cover of a true star. Can’t wait. LOVE your writing.
Ok rascal, I am one of the “Mrs. Robinsons” who is smoldering over the supposed photo cover of David, but I can get a little hot and still appreciate it’s seriousness too. You are just killing me with all the right words here on your post. I am glad I read this to night because it felt right what you said and I am very fascinated at the thought of how Jive and David are working together and the whole pregression here. I guess we can only speculate and then get little hints here and there, like with this photo op and the video of his photo shoot for his cover which is now released. Thanks for your choice of words and thoughtful consideration of David.
very smart move of jive! about time the kid is taken seriously and given the utmost respect this incredible talent deserves and needs guidance in. more balls jive! go go sky rocket launch david james!
On the lighter side, I took the link to the photo shopped version of gangsta David, complete with bling, shades and do rag and made it my wallpaper today. On a dismal rainy day in New England, just strolling by my computer gave me a chuckle. I love the original shot but the alteration gives me the giggles. Bottom line is .. I love David in any manner presented.
I loved that you summed it up so skillfully as the only picture we’ve seen that captures the David that sings.
That’s it!!! I’ve studied it an studied it and I knew that I loved it and agreed it was great that his album is going to show a older looking more serious artist but I knew there was something more and couldn’t put my finger on it and that’s it. It captures the David that sings. Thrilling.
When I saw this album cover for David earlier this week, I was awestruck by just how provocative it appeared! I LOVED IT. . .immediately! And, not because it made me “hot,” but there’s something so vulnerable about it that makes it real–so David. Thanks for putting to paper what I could never have said better. I respect the artistry of David, the humility and strength he exudes, and the “powerhouse of emotion” he delivers in his music. I can’t wait to hear the album.
By the way, I’ve skimmed the comments above and was thrilled to see how many agreed with your expressive assessment of what this kind of album cover means for David and his career. I’ve been lurking here off and on and have to say there’s a lot more depth to what is expressed here. Nice!
Just weighing in on this thread, several days after the album cover got released so I have the benefit of a few days of “wisdom”.
Getting some other things out of the way: You made me laugh nervously at the Mrs. Robinson theme (guilty as charged but not every day!) and Bookaholic, love your avatar.
In my usual decision making style, I got some others to weigh in….my son and a number of my 15 year old son’s friends. This is the “I’m-too-cool-for-anything-my-mom-likes” kid. My son’s comment was “THAT is David Archuleta?” The rest had the same thoughts – they are certainly not DA fans and what I took as a neutral to guarded positive reaction, was interesting. This is a demographic that David will also need to make an impact on. If an album cover helps, Jive will have done it’s job.
Conclusion: The visual is not at all what people expect from DA.
This album has to open David up to others who don’t know about AI, have certain misconceptions or impressions of AI and of David. I think it’s perfect from that perspective. David is 360 degrees handsome; no doubt about it. Rather than looking like a thug, this portrays his handsomeness in a more visceral way.
Rascal, question for you…why do you think the Jive/DA marriage is rocky?
Rascal, I have to say, when I clicked to listen to the song, it was completely unexpected … and absolutely hilarious!
Thanks for this wonderful site, and the insightful commentary. BTW, it took me awhile to get over the initial shock of this different look for David, but I’ve come around and now think the selection of this pic for his first album cover was brilliant.
