Angels: The Full Track

First, the good news: In contrast to his earlier AI studio performances, David has evolved considerably in his ability to reproduce in-studio the dimensions of power and urgency he locates so naturally in live settings. If only the producers hadn’t done everything in their power to undermine this accomplishment.
The production is shamefully overdone. After a stunning opening, one that holds the promise of sublime nuance and incredible consequence, the vocal is swallowed into the mix like powdered sugar in batter. I feel like a want to throw poor David a life-raft to keep him from drowning. The arrangement itself is tight, if a little thick; the tempo is spot-on. And then comes the chorus… The harmonies are positively ridiculous. And not in the good way. Pure, unadulterated bubble gum.
The travesty of it all is that they’ve taken a magnificent, dynamic, heart-wrenching performance and all but neutralized it with layers of nonsense. Someone needs to clue them into the concept of “less is more.”
If this is a harbinger of things to come, we’ll have to prepare ourselves for some disappointments.
Hey Rascal! I was just checking back on your site one last time before signing off for the night.
Usually, I’m in agreement with you on many things, but this is not one of those times.
First, I’m pleased the bridge is included (though, but for one annoying electric guitar sound that’s a little out of place, I’m loving David’s new rearrangement here – especially that lovely, gracious “Ohhhhh” note he delivers: simply beautiful). Second, perhaps because of the early leaks, I’ve gotten used to the many layers of instrumentals added. I will always prefer the simple and barebones presentation of the song as he performed it during the AI tour, but this recording is still well done.
Finally, I must acknowledge that today was pretty much a rough day: doing dental surgery, the funeral of one of our students, and the unfolding tragedy in Jennifer Hudson’s family that I’ve been following in the news. Trust me when I tell ya that hearing David deliver the full studio version of “Angels” was a welcome sound.
So, thanks for featuring it here, as I can now go to sleep with David’s voice dancing around in my head.
Sorry Rascal, I too must say I find this rendition powerful and incredibly effective.
I simply love this song, in all of it’s different dressing, it’s still spot on.
Oh and let me add that not everyone believes less is more. Those of us who have followed from the beginning know how wonderful he is at his understated best, but there are some that just want to hear him blow, and this rendition is for them. And blow he does.
If it’s bubble gum them it’s probably a pack of eclipse instead of bubblelicious.
rascal, I’m more in your camp than not. Where the heck is the bridge – the voice is completely covered? Yes, less is more! My favorite moments of David’s singing are with his voice and a guitar or his voice and piano. Then you have the luxury of hearing every nuance. This is an opportunity lost.
I meant to say: Where the heck is the bridge? The voice is completely covered!
One thing you could try in iTunes is open up the equalizer and play around with those setting some. I put mine on base reducer and I can hear his voice better now.
OK. I agree and I disagree… and decisive. ha ha!
Repeat after me…
We are not his core demographic.
This is what sells to his core demographic.
In order to change the tastes of the core demographic,
One must first get their attention.
He will lead them…. in time.
tee hee!
And as I’ve said many times before, that even though I may not thoroughly (and by that I mean, would I change something) enjoy one or more of his songs on this album or on future albums…there would always be a nugget of gold for me to love and appreciate in each of the songs….to make it worth listening to.
New Angels = Mother Lode! Minus a few nuggets here and there that those pesky claim jumpers carted off. But I’m still rich, I tell you. RICH! ha ha!
Lise, I adjusted my iTunes to reduce the bass as well, and it does help. I have to disagree with Rascal here and say that I love this version of Angels. There’s a lot in this track…I hear the purity of his lower register sultry vocals in the verses while the harmonies in the chorus with the soft bass really lets the song take off and soar. ‘Angels’ now actually kind of rocks out. And I love the falsetto in the bridge with the guitar riff…adding to the slight rock vibe. David’s vocals are still really strong to my ears and not ‘processed’.
The Tulsa performance of Angels will always be special, and I don’t think anything will ever compare to the emotion and impact of David singing that song live for his last tour performance, so I’m glad that this version has a slightly different drive from the way he sang it on tour. It’s also a change in vibe from how he sang it on the show during the Top8 week, which is also a plus in my books. If the hints we’ve been given about some of ballads on the album turn out to be accurate, then I think there will be some beautiful vocal tracks on it that will satisfy our desire to hear David’s voice singing out pure and simple.
As it’s arranged now, I think Angels has huge potential to be another hit single and in all likelihood, surely at least one of the ballads will be too. So it might be a good thing that the ballads type songs also have some variety to them. At any rate, this version passed my litmus test…I used at least three tissues while listening to it the first time…
I’m not sure where I stand on the new Angels yet (and YES I am so happy that there’s a bridge and a 3rd chorus! My prediction/hope was right! Woohoo!!!!!!), but I really appreciate Rascal using his verbal swords on this one.
I don’t want to promote unrealistic, god-like expectations for David. Still, it’s good to have high expectations and lay out some criticisms of what we don’t like (of course while mindful that we know David is capable of greatness). It shakes things up. It raises the bar higher. Keeps his team on edge.
Of course, none of this is exclusive to gushing over David and loving what he gives us at the same time. That’s a given, after all.
I love the placement of Angels at the end of the album. After an impressive and diverse set of tracks comes this soulful cry.
And the casual buyer shall listen and say to himself:
“DAYUM.”
Fansite lovingarchie.com held a t-shirt design contest to help celebrate David’s new album. With everyone being so excited here I thought some of you might want the information. The winning design unfortunately could not be made due to its use of David’s image, but they have created the t-shirt design that took 2nd.

Also, may I ask a favor of everyone? I’m one of those extremely rabid fans that vote on almost every poll that I find. There is one poll that that I am rather saddened by how its turning out. David is currently in third place behind Clay Aiken and David Cook. Usually I don’t go pleading for votes, but its a MTV poll and I would love David to have a good showing. The link is

It seems that you are only able to vote once. Dang It!
Rascal, I may not have your discerning ear but I love this version of Angels. I will listen to it all day. Juliebug, you have it right on. David must play the game until he is so big that he can make the game.
He amazes me with his talent. He put together an album in a few short months. It has been ablast waiting for this album. Fan sites have kept it interesting and this blog is always tops. I especially enjoyed the Seton trip. It was so much fun watching him have fun. He is working so hard and surrounded by adults too much. He needs to be able to have fun with his peers. Those girls squeals and screams just make me grin ear to ear. What a charmer he is!
What is going on!! I must have an ANGEL letting me know when somthing BIg is happening regarding David!
I normally wait up at 5:10 each morning..but my alarm went off at 4:10!! Didn’t even look at the time, just got up, did my usual AM routine, then logged on before heading off to work..saw that the news about THE album and thought, DANG! I don’t have time to do anything now..I glance at the clock and I could not buh-lieve it! I had a whole hour to spare!! So of course I preorded the album AND downloaded ANGELS and I LOVE this version! It would have been a LOOONNNGGG day if I would have had to wait til after work..so thank you “Angels” for waking me up!!?? Veryyyyy strange!!!
Have A SUPER DAY everyone!!
Sorry Rascal but I disagree – there is nothing ridulous or bubble gum about this version of Angels. I think it is beautiful. A little more positivity would be nice.
I was a little apprehensive when I first saw Rascals comments, but after listening to David’s new rendition of Angels, to say I am very pleased would be an understatement! I absolutely LOVE it! What a beautiful ending to a wonderful album this will be! RIGHT ON!
Usually, I have no time to post after catching up here, but just couldn’t resist this morning ~ and now I’m really running late! So y’all have a great day! I certainly will, with much relief to hear that beautiful bridge still inserted ~ YAY, YAY, YAY!
Album is #17 at 7:26 am on iTunes!
And David, if you ever catch a sneak peak here ~ I LOVE YOU and EVERYTHING YOU SING!!! If it’s YOU, I love it ~ that voice ~ THAT VOICE! BRAVO! Can’t wait for the rest! Nov. 11, come quickly!!!
Good morning! Oh yeah..I was already here this morning..just wanted to say that as I’m driving in to work every morning, I listen to our POP stations til they play Crush..so anyway I’m listening to all these popular song that are out now by all the popular singers, I can’t call them “artists”, and I tried not to compare them to David or be biased..but MY GOSH, there is NOT ONE who I heard this morning that can even come close to David’s VOICE and song delivery. NOT ONE! I was sitting here trying to come up with a singer who has a song or album on the charts and sorry, but I can’t come up with anyone who can compare with David, not even HIS favorites! I mean, is there must be a couple of singers who can at least come close? I really like Josh Groben’s and Clay Aiken’s voices but now even they are second to David. How can he NOT be THE VOICE, the ONLY VOICE! I know we all LOVE David, but I am trying to be open-minded here. Trying not to let my bias cloud my judgement, trying to follow rascal’s lead..and I can’t come up with anyone who compares. This ANGELS is suberb, but I KNOW when he sings it in concert, and I hope he does at every concert, it will be POWERFUL every time. It just MAY become his “Signature” song, like in my dream, but then again I can only dream.
Now I gotta get some work done!
Lise – Thanks for the base reducer information. I am enjoying the new Angels tremendously with the base reduced.
Listening to it the 20th time “lying in bed, thoughts running through my head” – LOL. Woke up to this wonderful surprise! Different version, different sound, very poppy. I am thinking it will play well on the radio.
Granddaughter (age 12) texted me and she LOVES it.
rascal..the final mix of ANGELS, with all the instrumentals “drowning out” David’s voice was beyond David’s control..remember him saying just that? I do buh-lieve with the success of this album, he WILL have more control on the next album, then finally he will have FULL control..so I’m not worried..just terribly anxious for that day when he produces his own music..**sigh**
FunnyGirl — Nice to see you! — I didn’t say this version was “bubble gum.” I said the harmonies in the chorus are. In fact, I said I liked the arrangement overall, just not the mix.
Look folks, it goes without saying that listening to almost anything by David is a wonderful experience. I hope I don’t have to preface every review that might not amount to a homerun with that disclaimer.
If I’m setting a high bar it’s because David deserves it. At this point in his career, and especially with this album, any issues will invariably be due to aspects out of his control. But I am determined to call it as I see it. It doesn’t mean I don’t love the fact that we have it.
Look..I have to get some work done! But I just had to say I have my headphones on listening to my downloaded cd of ANGELS and I get CHILLS when David does his oooooo at the end if the bridge. I don’t think he’s done that before, has he?? Did I say CHILLS?
It’s like WARM CHILLS ( is that possible? ) flowing through my entire body! Oh my heck..how can I get any work done??
SF – Yes, about 3:05 he lets loose with a ….hmmm….Yowl? The bridge is so different, and it hits me with a sense of surprise even on the 30th listen.
My yoga instructor tells me to image a golden breeze flowing up my spine and out the top of my head (something to do with chakras) as I breath and go through the movements—I am thinking that may be comprable to your “WARM CHILLS.”
Good morning everyone! I had a peaceful night (yes, “Angels” was my lullaby just before I drifted off to sleep). I now understand why David, I once read, used to be the “healer” in his family (I once read that, whenever anyone in his family was sick and lying in hospital, he would go visit and sing them to sleep – can you imagine? My heart melts thinking about this).
Rascal, I think we should all set the bar high when it comes to David’s music. Not only does he deserve it, he’s beyond capable of reaching it.
And while I love this version, I can understand the criticism you have about the arrangement here. I also understand why David’s producers created this mix – they made it out to be a “pop” song (which it is – as a matter of fact, it’s very similar to the original Robbie Williams version). We’ve just been spoiled because we’ve heard it in its organic phase, and the organic will always be superior to the artificial mixing that occurred here.
I also understand your concerns that Jive is reducing (yes, I said it) they are REDUCING his musical vision to the commercial world of pop. Unfortunately, while he’s 17/18, David will not be taken more seriously beyond being a “pop star.” He’s going to have to get to Cookie’s age (and by then, let’s hope AI is but a distant memory and that David will be in an independent position to hook up with some really visionary producers and make the album he is destined to make, the kind that lands him immediately in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame).
So, I’m predicting, around age 25, when he’s surpassed Enrique Iglesias and Gabriel Garcia Bernal in the hot Latin looks department, we’ll get David at his prime – looks wise, music wise, etc. Age 25, the same age Michael Jackson was when he put out his monster album, Thriller.
Let’s be patient. David’s Archudomination is imminent. We can’t assume he’ll do it all with a debut album.
Furthermore, let me just add another point about David currently functioning as a “pop teen star.” As I had already pointed out in a previous discussion, this label eventually cost him the AI title this year.
Curiously enough, while reading through many of the Jennifer Hudson forums last night – while following the tragic news involving her family – I was reminded more and more about the season when she was voted off amidst controversy. One of the reasons why people were so outraged and willing to use the R-word is because Jennifer got booted while a weaker contestant, the cute little 16-year-old redhead, John Stevens, lasted longer. In fact, I’ve always believed the popular belief that Jennifer Hudson was voted off too early is what galvanized her Dreamgirls success and her eventual Oscar win (think about it: Academy members watch Idol too – her role as Effie White was a manifestation of all that had happened to her on AI: it resonated, and people were all too eager to reward her and promote the belief that, in the face of injustice, “true talent” will prevail).
The fallout of all this is poor John Stevens immediately became the focus of some really ugly media stories that season (and subsequently labeled all cute teenagers, most notoriously Sanjaya Malakar during Season 6, as popular but untalented contestants), so it wasn’t a surprise that the following week, he was voted off.
So, when I say AI carried a lot of baggage into Season 7, this is part of it. The previous season, a 17-year-old Jordin Sparks won the AI title, amidst more outrage that the stronger singer, 29-year-old Melinda Doolittle, was voted off during Top 3 week.
The bottom line is: many of the cute teenaged contestants, with competent yet weak voices, would have fit right into today’s market – all they need are auto-tuners to get their voices sounding decent on over-processed music.
Because of this prevailing representation of the “teen pop star,” it’s going to take a while for David’s organic “true talent” to really shine through. People have to discard the superficial trappings – the teen pop star image, the cute-as-a-button persona – to dig through and discover the true gem that his amazing voice represents.
I’m at least grateful that there’s a dedicated segment of his fanbase that already knows this (not necessarily the tween branch, and even then, their overwhelmed screaming is a manifestation of the knowledge that David surpasses).
But, this does mean that we’ll have to wait out the commercial pop teen years that mark David’s debut before we get to the real core of who he will be musically.
rascal – 21 – we know
Just one more two cents from me..Even though I should be working..well who can work while listening to David anyway? Anyway, I just listened to MY HANDS, TOUCH MY HANDS, A LITTLE TOO NOT OVER YOU and the final ANGELS..and just as I thought, and it may just be me..but ANGELS wins “hands” down…so how do you think the writers & producers of the other songs would have felt if David had “been allowed” to record the “TULSA” rendition w/o all the instrumentals, just the piano and his amazing voice like at Seton? I dunno, I’m jus’ sayin’ cuz as it is, ANGELS is my fav so far…JMO though, so don’t go throwing anything at me!!
SF, “Angels” will always have a special place in the hearts of his Arch Angels. But, I’m reserving judgment until I get full versions of the other songs.
#21 rascal – thanks for the welcome – I do get the point you are making but the tone of the post is negative to me which gets me on the defensive cuz I am like a momma bear protecting her baby cub ya know? I try to be objective about David but it is hard. We all won’t like every note, track, mix, song on the CD, but I think as fanbase we need to be as positive as possible. I prefer the live, soulful version of Angels from the tour, but I’ll take this version too, and I’ll marvel at his voice everytime I hear it. I know nothing about marketing, mixing, or the music biz, I just know that I love David Archuleta, and I will buy anything he does, until the day that I die. I do wish him the commercial successes – #1 hits, #1 Albums, Grammies, etc, but that stuff doesn’t determine success to me, even though I know it does in the industry, and David will make more money that way, etc. I just know that my heart tells me that David will be a megastar, a few pop songs notwithstanding. I love you David!
a few things ras:
you need to relax.
stay positive buddy.
all is good. cheer up, count david james’ blessings.
I am quite comfortable loving all things David, but having a critical ear for the musical arrangements. I see no loss of love for David when it is pointed out that the mix is not ideal.
rascal, thanks for setting the bar high.
I’m going to try out that idea of reducing the bass – thanks for that.
Give it a listen with high grade speakers, surround sound, reduced bass. Lots of SF’s WARM CHILLS going up my spine and out the top of my head!!!
Rascal
I agree with you on this one…sometimes “less is more”.
We all know and believe in David’s potential. We have the bar set so high and expect better from him than most artists out there. With all of the intrumentations, it does cover up his voice more than I would like for it to. You just can’t capure the essesce of David in a “sterile” recording environment. He feeds off the audience and is better live than in a studio with the slower meaningful songs. You loose the emotion he puts into the song when you do not see and hear him live. I also realize that he said he had no control over the final production of the songs…so…with that being said…we know its not his fault, but Jives. I do like the falsetto he puts into Angels with this version…something different than on the tour. He still amazes me at how he changes songs all the time…the sign of a true artist. Please don’t ban me for agreeing with Rascal LOL!!!
cutter12 #11: DA is now in 2nd place. Your marketing efforts are paying off. You are a good archangel.
Hi everyone! Since my last post, I was suddenly overcome with agonizing pain – residual effects from my tooth extraction yesterday.
Thank Goodness “Angels” was released when it was. I quickly went back to bed, dosed up on some Ibuprofen, antibiotics, and David’s “Angels,” and that seemed to do the trick!
I’m feeling much better now (and just in time to get ready to go teach this afternoon).
I can’t say it enough: David’s voice is magical, and no amount of over-processed music would ever be able to cover up that simple and glorious fact.
I’ve already placed “Angels” on a nice, soothing playlist I call “Soul Balm.” He’s nicely nestled between Peter Gabriel and Enya, with Sade and Zap Mama providing the heavy-bassed bookends. I know, I’m eclectically “weird” like that (I hope David would be proud).
Until next time!
gerryhansolo — #29 — relax?!? What fun is there in that?!
So… The mix does sound different on different systems and when played on one where the vocal is not as buried it is much more successful and enjoyable. I still abhor the harmonies. So cheesy.
David’s work is magnificent, but I have to confess to a sense that it is just the slightest bit studied. There’s a constructivist aspect to it (as opposed to organic), one which may also be a result of the production process (editing ‘the best’ of different takes).
I think this is a beautiful studio version of Angels. Yeah, it’s got a different vibe and sound to it, but I think it’s really good.
Let’s face it, if we all had our druthers, we would prefer David in a dark room (…….wait for it……) with nothing but a piano and “the voice”.
I’m absolutely “squeeeeing” after he said in this morning’s radio show that his dream is to play in smaller more intimate settings.
When I think of that….I….I….I………oh boy, I need to go lay down. *sigh*
Rascal, I won’t get a chance to listen to Angels till tonight but just wanted to say how much I love your writing.
Your phrase “the vocal is swallowed into the mix like powdered sugar in batter” describes so many of today’s overproduced pop songs (which can be a blessing, depending on the singer).
It’s funny — how many concertgoers are disappointed when they hear their superstar sing live because it doesn’t sound “like it did on the record.” As we all know, David will get the opposite reaction!
And how rare it is to get MORE than you bargained for. (It’s only happened to me a few times – Aretha Franklin, Elton John and Linda Ronstadt, in my limited experience.) And thanks for the tip about iTunes, everyone, my order is in! (With all these different CD permutations, it’ll be tough to know which ones to gift!)
Rascal, I agree with you. I adore David’s voice on the song, but I agree with you about production.
Also, David’s album is now #14 on iTunes!
Joner, haha…when you said “prefer David in a dark room…” I have to confess that my mind went to other places!
Talk with you soon about C-town!
AAAAAHADFHAHSDFSDFHHSDFHASDFHAHDFAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
David’s album just jumped up to No. 9 on iTunes!!!!!!!!!!!
Can he do like Crush and be No. 1 by nightfall? I think he can! And I’m gonna help!
That’s weird – He’s number 9 on iTunes homepage but No. 14 when you click through.
Oh and I think No. 1 might be tough with HSM3 at No. 1.
But he ain’t called the Crusher for nothing!
Love the new version of Angels,-very current- just enough pop edge– but still enough warmth to melt your heart, just what David needs to have that connection with a wide range of listeners. This absolutely would be a long lasting hit …Smart choice.
I am in need of help in lowering the base on iTunes.Any Hints?? Cannot seem to locate the controls for this.
So nice to see him moving up! Would love to see him at #1 within a day.
did I mention –the soulful cry– that seems to be showing up in Davids new songs.Very Mature and Very COOL…..
Joner..David said that? Really? He said he wants to perform in smaller more intimate settings??? Oh my gosh! With all his Original Angels there?? Like in my dream!! But dang, where would we park if its too small?
Did he really sing CRUSH a capella?? I can’t access anything here (blocked). oh my heck!!
I have listened to ANGELS over & over, and I just can’t see why this is considered a “pop” song..It’s sooo much more than that. The way David sings it, it just doesn’t sound like pop to me, not at all like the other pop songs on the radio now, but more like “easy listening” even with what everyone thinks is an over-produced mix. I really think it will be played on the adult contemporary stations who don’t play pop at all. Am I CRA-ZEH??
Oh, and, um, the person knocked out of top 10 albums list to make room for David? Yup, David Cook, who was at No. 9. Pretty dang funny.
SF – Yes, he sang a bit of Crush after much prodding! He said “I have morning voice… I never sing in the morning”. He proceeded to blow the roof off the studio. The winner of the apple bobbing contest (dumb idea) was personally seranaded to by David. He commented that it was the first time he ever sang that song to a girl, or words to that effect.
He also very quietly asked that we keep jennifer hudson in our prayers.
I love his quiet caring ways.
After listening to the complete Angels numerous times, I think that they produced the song to have more of a pop feel and to appeal to a mainstream audience. Maybe on a future album he will perform a more organic, stripped version.
The fact that he refused to give out any personal info from his I-phone about his celebrity friends after being asked a few times by the dj’s tells me he is pretty loyal.
Bravo to sticking to your convictions, David.
I wish “Angels” sounded a bit less produced, but I bet so does David. He likes that organic feel. So do I.
That said, I still love it. I cannot help it. His voice soothes my soul.
Hmmm…Rascal…after thinking about the last post…I did notice the changes in his voice and the sounds. I do believe they did edit his voice picking out different parts thru previous recordings. I think a straight run thru and lower the music a bit would be the best version…alahhh…Tulsa version!! Just let him be David…no editing necessary!! Just catch him in his moments!!
My favorite tour versions was when he picked up the beat on the song and just went with it…however he was feeling at the time. There were certain times when he went higher and then naturally knew when to lower his voice to get the effect of the song. I love his phrasing of words during the tour…more emphasis on certain words make a stronger impact of the song. I like the tour version of the bridge…there was more of the yeah…yeaaahhhh…ohhhhhhh…than on the album version, but do enjoy the falsetto…so haunting!
jeez, Rascal, I listened once and I don’t know……..
I’ve NEVER said once before that I was disappointed in anything done by David, but…………the bridge, the bridge, people are going to slap me up side the head for this one……but……..I actually don’t care for the falsetto note at the end of the bridge. I appreciate the effort of trying out different things, I KNOW it’s been sung so many times, but I just appreciate the middle range power notes nailed by David the most.
as far as being overdone with the harmonies, etc. I really love all the orchestral elements here, but do agree with you that his vocals are drowned out somewhat, at times. The organic tone we’ve all been used to all these months is something we will miss perhaps for a while, with his freshman album, which as we all have said has to open the door to appeal to the masses at this point. Patience is the key. We’ll have to wait and see what the remaining ballads are like on the CD. Maybe there will be less “electronic mixing” on those. In David’s defense I am sure Jive had much to do with whatever “overprocessing” we observe here.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still beautiful and soul piercing.
#52/Inspired, yes the bridge during tour was longer. I miss that longer version too.
chickee…That’s the part of the bridge I LOVE!! The falsetto, the “ooooo”! Oh my gosh. Gives me “warm chills”..
And I still think it’ll be played on adult contemporary stations, the ones that play Elton, Celine, Josh, as well as Sara_Bareilles, John Mayer, etc..And the pop stations will also play it. Very cool!!
This is an example of “a little bit of this, a little bit of that, something for everyone” like David said. I just can’t wait to hear the rest..I hope I live through it!!
Guh! Every time I refresh this page it brings me up to that ADORABLE picture of David. He looks like a little elf in that pic. Could he get ANY CUTER????
We need to clone this kid. Can you imagine the duets we could have?
Gosh, everyone, more national appearances are being announced today. TRL, Regis and Kelly, an L.A. Fox show, etc. He’s everywhere!
Speaking of pictures of David..I have to say I DO NOT like the photo of David sitting on the grass. I just don’t think it captures his beauty like the other photos that were taken that day..again, JMO. And of course everyone knows I love the stylish jeans & buckle on one of the photos..that’s the one they should be using on iTunes…becuz of his beautiful face!
KUDOS & CHEERS TO AZOFF!!
That’s the way to take care of our baby..you do your job, we’ll do ours!!
#55/silverfoxe, do you really? maybe if i listen a few more times, I will like it too. the only prob. I had was that it didn’t seem to FLOW with the other notes. It just sort of happened, the high falsetto. cause, I’m with you. this is my favorite David song and it’s always been soo perfect to me. change never did come easy to me!
Rascal
Unfortunately I have to agree with You in every point You make.
I listened Angels 3 times; then I listened Robbie William`s rendition as well.
What have they done. Angels is very much loved here in Europe. It was very familiar to me long before AI. It`s like not a song ; it`s more like poetry. And this version (trying to find a right word) is too “selling”.It`s been made too easy , too light to listen. Sensibility is missing. (David spoiled us during AI-tour)
Perhaps Jive thinks this version goes better to bigger audiences.
I don`t say it`s bad. It is good . But the soul of the song is suffering
And so is mine
Stella
Everyone, help! where is the interview of David kind of brushing off the interviewer with some of his questions. i thought i saw a link here earlier, but can’t find it now. and thanks…………
#58/silverfoxe, i LOVED a video of yours recently of all the head shots of David. EVERY single one of them was gorgeous. the hair, the smile, just everything. don’t remember which video it was though. they were all sort of an older more mature looking David.
#45djb/thank you for putting a label to the new “sound” I heard for the first time when David sang “God Bless America” at the playoff game in Tampa Bay. It is a soulful cry. I wish I knew the proper term for this sound. You hear it alot of times in country singers. I LOVE IT on David. Has anyone else noticed this?
Oh Stella, Stella…What? What is it then that I am hearing that you are not, or vice-versa? It’s not TULSA, no..but it could not be. This is a cover song on the album, not an original, even though to US, David completely owns it. A cover song, no matter how good it is, shouldn’t over-power the other original songs on a first album. But even so..this rendition sung by David would be hard to beat any anyone..David still owns it.
Chickee..I was pleasantly surprised at the falsetto..very much so! Like at the end of ALTNOY! be still my heart!!And I hope he uses it often!
Sorry..would be hard to beat BY anyone..
chickee..the video is called..THE MANY BEAUTIFUL FACES OF DAVID..and thank you!
I’m working on another one with more current Faces of David…
Uh-oh, I’m not likin’ this dream, especially in light of rascal’s morning post. In this dream….
I had a large gym-like room in my home, and an acrobat friend had been there practicing the night before. David came over the next morning to visit. He wanted to to try out his gymnastic skills. He put a huge basket in the middle of the floor, and was going to do a running flip, putting his hands down in the basket and continue the flip out of the basket, landing on his feet on the other side of it. But when he put his hands down in the basket, his whole body was engulfed in it and he did not reappear for a minute. Then he stood up–he’d slipped and landed on his right shoulder and he was in pain. I ran and got a towel and ice and made an ice pack, ran back, leaned around his poor hurting body in order to reach his shoulder blade, and held the ice pack on it. It seemed to comfort him.
I had no clue what that meant when I woke up. But on reading of rascal’s impression of Angels (which I’d listened to last night before going to bed), and his fears about the production, well, I can see a clear interpretation. (Getting engulfed in the huge basket! Not able to lift himself out of it in the way he had intended?) Oddly, I had gone to sleep having thrilled to hearing Angels–but apparently my subconscious agrees with rascal!
Oh, Lise, thanks–I’ll check out the iTunes equalizer.
(continuing to read comments) …BTW, the disappointment expressed is in the **production**, which David has no control over, not in David himself. I totally get that rascal – no need to defend. Our protectiveness takes many forms, and it’s all about loving David!
I am continually in awe of how David is able to bring a newness to a song he has sang over and over… this version indeed has a different flavour. I like the pop feel…. it kind of reminds me of Robbie Williams original and yes, it is different from what we have heard from David. Perhaps more radio friendly… I know what David can do with this song (oh my Tulsa and Ford Day….wow) But that being said I am cool with a bit of a change up.
I have been trying to listen to the song like someone who has never heard David sing this before and I think new fans will be really impressed. He sounds great… the song is catchy, it can be played on the radio……..
Now just think once David gets these new fans to a concert he can BLOW the roof off singing “Angels” (a la Tulsa) and the new fans will be picking themselves off the floor and saying ” what the heck?! We liked the radio version but this live version is AWESOME…INCREDIBLE.. this boy can siiiiiing!”
BIg smiles….Don’t we know it!!! Aaaaaaaah David you sly dog !
djb – Good point, the mix is probably intended to give it more of a pop edge—Jive didn’t get where they are for nuthin’ so hopefully they know what they are doing as far as the “big picture”– I’ll give them the bene of the doubt for now, and if it’s the right move to get more of his albums sold, it’s all good. But yes, Joner, the dark room (ha!) with just a piano and the Voice, ahhhhh…. Yes please.
This new version is not Tulsa, and it is not Seton. At first I think I was just tolerating it. But now I’ve replayed it about 20 times, so I must be falling in love with it. How else could I have tolerated so many replays in such a short period of time?
This morning when I looked at my digital clock and saw 11:01, I thought to myself, “It’s November already!” Oops! Maybe I’m getting a little too eager.
djb 43- Top Tool Bar – View – Show Equalizer – click on the bar under the word Equalizer – Bass Reducer
#63/chickee—it gets me everytime.(his soulful cry)
His God Bless America and StarSpangled Banner
are absolutley Beautiful and full of pure magic and class..all froim a 17 yr old…puts many others to shame..Can only pray we hear David at the SuperBowl singing SSB…He is truly magical …
I love everything about this version and it’s the first listen. I’m sure I’ll be loving it even more tomorrow. Do Archie’s angels always get what they want? This angel’s answer is: yes! At least, as far it concerns David’s singing.
Cool, THANKS for the equalizer tip! Treble Reducer helps on my system. OH! **Vocal Booster**, YES!!!
#65/silverfoxe, well………….i can’t wait for another one, more beautiful mature faces of David. THUD…….
i just downloaded Angels to my IPod. a bazillion times better sound than my computer gave me. percussion, strings, are just perfect. still wishin’ the bridge was a bit longer……….
awestruck/#71–thanks,it worked– sounds great either way david could sing under water and it would sound magical!!! I am starting to believe I will not listen to anyone but David sing aything…Is that wrong??
#72/djb – OH MY! David at the Super Bowl singing the SSB. OMG, I’m gettin’ shakey just thinkin’ about it.
oops–typo–I will not listen to anyone but David sing ANYTHING..but I am sure you knew that!!
that bridge in ANGELS makes me weak in the knees!!
I wish it was longer but I am afraid any more and I might need CPR….Oh Boy!!!
So many thoughts…where to begin. I prefer the raw (live!) version of the song, however I am surprised that it wasn’t dressed up MORE than it was. All things considered–we know who they are marketing to, we know how much his career hinges on the success of this album and with that in mind–I am extremely pleased with what I’m hearing. I am thrilled that David has gone from amazing to MORE amazing. How is that possible? I think the whole “Less is More” concept is legit in most cases but I feel like we should feel lucky for what Jive has given us. Hey, I’m just glad it made it to the album. Now THAT many more people can be exposed to his unparalleled talent in a song that before David, was relatively unknown in the United States.
#79/djb, yeah, I usually check my b/p before I listen to it too. Oh Boy, indeed……..
#80/—David going from amazing to MORE amazing-How is that possible??? Well…that is what makes david David-
He does it everytime he opens his mouth and his amazing beautiful music comes out!! It is just what he does and exactly what makes david David..Gotta love him..a natural beautiful soul……at 17 …THUD ! ! A gift to humanity…..
BTW…David has now moved up to #8 on I-tunes “top Albums”!
djb–that’s true! What was I thinking? Obviously I wasn’t!
Not to be disrespectful here…but Robbie who and Williams what? Other artists should be hoping that David doesn’t start singing one of THEIR songs. He has special powers–this David.
The Fly 92.3 radio show this a.m. (about 50 mins) is a great interview and wonderful to listen to. Interviewers (DJ’s) asked excellent questions so new info from David we haven’t heard before.
Special Powers indeed!!! I would love to hear Davids reaction to that!!
I can honestly say I have never heard a better original version of any song David has sung…and I used to like the original of some of the songs but nothing compares to HIS versions!! I am sure more than a few artists are on the alert—watch out for this kid!!! hey- he silenced an entire stadium in Tampa with GBA and their fans say that has never happened before!!
I’ve been wondering how many songs David actually recorded before picking them out for the CD.
The fact that they have 17 (maybe 18 with Wal-mart bonus track) songs seems like alot. Even Cook only has 14 on his.
Maybe they were all so good they couldn’t choose! Awww.., poor Jive….decisions, decisions…
David should release a CD of his “did not make it to CD” songs.. It would be a best seller for sure..
My Christmas wish is for david to release his version of —hold on ………………………..
LIL DRUMMER BOY
There Goes My Heart Again..Breath In Breath Out..haha
Angels is now #67 on the iTunes Top 100 and is #22 on the iTunes Pop Chart.
djb…Have you ever heard David sing “Nature Boy” when he was young? His father said this is his favorite, I can see why…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ7tdmQWcus
I can not imagine Angels not soaring to the top very quickly….I wonder what Simon Cowell would think of this version..He had mentioned on AI that he wondered why it was never a hit in this country…Well I think it will be one very soon..Would love to hear his opinion..
Well I am pretty much done in… I really need the album now….
It’s not just when he sings… it’ s for also how grounded he is. He knows so well at just 17, what music is and what it can do for people. That’s the gift he gives to the world and we are so blessed to have gotten “It” first… we can enjoy every part of this trip as it unfolds…
Well, as long as we can keep breathing… I think I need the defibralator again
Awestruck- thanks for the equalizer tips…
A complete Christmas album may not be possible due again to the time constraints..He has all the Jingle concerts in December..but what a Gift it would be if he could put one out..especially if it has “Mary, Did You Know?” my fav Christmas song..oh and O Holy Night, too.
**sigh**
Not sure if the news has made it here yet, but David will be on Ellen on the day his album drops.
Sorry–on 11/14 (source: IDF)
Hope she apologizes and has a big slice of humble pie for the unkind words she said about him right before the finale. I believe that Simon’s interviews those crucial days partially led to David’s AI loss.
Joner/#90-Thanks but how can this be!!
First-A david song I have never heard(now on my Ipod under Young David songs)thank you
and second….How does this sound come out of a child..
oh thats right –it is DAVID
Lil Drummer Boy –the single –would be fine for now to go along with my O Holy Night…A girl can only hope…All I want for Christmas is My Lil Drummer Boy….
Ellen will either pretend it never happened, or confess that he liked David Cook more during AI but now loves loves Archie.
Fact is, Archie’s got a hit song and his star is undeniable. David’s in the driver’s seat now.
David may have songs that are almost all his “organic” voice on this album, if it’s true that one or two of the songs are mainly acoustic guitar and/or piano. I’d imagine it’s hard to get away with adding “pop layers” to his voice, when there’s a subdued, acoustic instrumentation behind him. Here’s hoping.
Also, after his debut album establishes him as a STAR and Jive doesn’t feel it has to go with the old production formulas, I very much see David doing an awesome CHRISTMAS album next year.
A disc of heart-rending classics!!?! Can our poor little hearts take it?
Oh sorry, forgot to add that the more “organic” David voice will probably front and center of a Christmas album if and when he does one. Jive will not feel as confined to the “pop sound” once his debut album establishes his success.
And the Christmas classics are not to be toyed with, either.
I… don’t like it. The chorus is a hot freakin mess. It makes me angry that I would rather hear a live version with tons of screaming girls than this version. Especially with all the rave reviews this recording was getting, I was expecting something epic.Well, I do think the vocals are better than the AI version, but I would rather listen to that than this. At least on that one, I can actually hear his voice!
What they did to the song is not “modernization.” It’s called overproduction on a song that should allow vocals to shine. This seems like a treatment for Chris Brown singing “Home” by Michael Buble. Pretty weird.
I’m listening to Elliott Yamin’s “Wait For You” right now- THAT is a modern ballad. No strange sheen or anything like that. His vocals are very much up front and center. Nobody accused the song of being “dated” because of the clarity of his voice. There are just certain songs you just don’t wrap in a sheen. Angels is one of them.
To me, this is a disappointment. And it’s not even David’s fault. But if he’s happy with it, then I guess it’s fine.
Has anyone seen the video of the song “Desperate”? David chose this song from an European group (Stanfour) for its deep content and changed a few words to fit his style. So Rascal…our shining star is still staying true to himself as much as he can, even in the poppy music industry. Trust the Archulater as we say!! He has still managed to sneak a few tidbits of himself in the album ha ha!!
#97 djb….”How does this sound come out of a child…”
I always loved this statement from American Idol’s music director…
“This show was not easy for him, he just made it look easy,” says Michael Orland, pianist and musical director for American Idol, about Archuleta, who will graduate from high school next year. “He came as a genius and left as a genius. All the participants aspired to reach his level.”
AMEN TO THAT!
ronaldsf#99-I don’t think I can handle an entire Xmas album right now…not to be demanding…but all I NEED ok .WANT..there I said it..haha..is my LiL Drummer Boy.
I promise not to beg anymore…
I love your tour vidios/audio by the way if you are the same ronaldsf..I have may downloads..many thanks
Joner- Did the AI producer really say that about David?
I feel better knowing I am not crazy…My jaw just drops when I see and hear him sing…I completely GET David and at the same time just do not understand such amazing talent and being such an amazing young man at the same time.So Humble but not to a fault..go figure .
I had the honor to meet him on tour and he is the REAL DEAL…
P.S. people–he is 18 now!
18 ?? Angels??
djasgirl – #101 — For as much as it is possible to get information on what David doesn’t like (as we all know, he tends to be very circumspect about negativity), there have been intimations that he does not, in fact, like some of the album production. No certainty on which songs or what aspects, but I for one have no doubt that David’s ear is far superior to the majority of producers and engineers he was assigned, and I would be very surprised if her were truly happy with this production.
rukiddingme47 – December 28th.
Oh wow–they said he was 18 on one of their interviews and he agreed–he was probably just playing along b/c he wouldn’t want to rock the boat. I should have known to ask the almighty rascal before just posting that!
Sorry djb I was referring to his age–not the charts. So sorry to cause confusion!
I am sure David is taking this first CD as part of the learning process of this journey -he has mentioned this many times before .
He has said he is a perfectionist which is fine but I truly belive he does not fully understand how good he really is.His concern is making the connection with the song and his fans..Well David -Connection Made.
WELL DONE ..you should be very proud of yourself…
IT OK.. Angels will be at and pass 18 before David will ..
Could use a hint as how to get a pic by my user name?
I like it here..
If you look at your profile, you can add a profile picture. It took me a bit to figure it out.
djab- 88 Little Drummer Boy is one of if not my favorite Christmas song. O Holy Night is right up there as well.
djasgirl..I am so disappointed that you’re disappointed with ANGELS. Your input about the songs on the album means a lot to me because you represent the group that David specifically wants to reach with this album, his own age group. So, it makes me a little sad. I am happy that you liked the demos, though. I’m sure the rest of the album will surpass our expectations. As for whether David was happy with the final mix..who knows, but he apparently wanted it on the album and knew his fans also wanted ANGELS on the album. So there you are. I
of course LOVE it very much! And besides, in concert, he will sing it the Tulsa way!!
Sooo, David will be on Ellen? hmmmmm, I don’t know how I feel about that…Does she still come out dancing at the beginning of her show? I haven’t watched her since she dissed David..I thought she was NUTS!
refnaf – 92 – that tip initially came from… I think Lise???, but it works. hibervibe said that the Treble Reducer worked best for her system.
ronaldsf 98-101 I agree! Oh my heart for a Christmas album like that.
djb..to get a pic over your blog name, go to Gravatar.com, follow the instructions. It’s easy!
I go a little cra-zeh with it..but it’s David’s fault..If he would stop taking all the amazing photos…except for the one iTunes is using, him sitting on the grass..I just don’t like that one. maybe cuz I like another one betta..
SF….I agree with you on that “sitting” picture of David…doesn’t it look like someone photo-shopped his head onto someone elses body???? It looks out of proportion or something. Dang it, they had so many good ones to pick from too!
Joner…Finally..someone who agrees with me about that photo..It’s just not one of my favorites, especially when there were so many others they could have used..why that one? David is a gorgeous specimen..I know cuz I work with “specimens” all day! haha! never mind, don’t ask..
Did you see this one? WTH???
http://www.snarkyarchies.com/2008/10/latham-pizza-party-pictures.html
It was a stunning opening, as noted by Rascal.
For me, it perfectly established a “meditative” mood intended by David to reflect (onto us) his “spiritual awareness” and to guide us to a similar understanding (i.e. “I’m going to make them understand what this song means”).
The opening arrangement allows us to utterly focus our attention on David’s voice…his expressing of the story…a deep understanding of that story.
The chorus provides the “mantra” that is repeated for the purpose of reaching that heightened level of “spiritual awareness”.
Throughout this song, the arrangement and David’s vocals flow in almost perfect synchronicity (for me, the bridge merges the vocals in a way that is ONE with the arrangement – in a manner that does not take away from the other, but sublimates each other) and guides the listener to an almost magical sense of being in the apprpriate place at the appropriate time – and it’s not Tulsa.
So, for me, the first verse is beautifully meditative and establishes the first facet of spiritual awareness – flow, the first chorus, the second facet – unconditional love (whether I’m right or wrong), the balance of the story fulfills the remaining facets of spiritual awareness – abundance, intuitive insight, creativity, wisdom, and raising spiritual consciousness.

Back to the ether…
hahahahaha! I would have carried him away and kept him! That’s funny!
I’m listening to “young David”, one of my very favorite songs “Don’t Tell Me”…very appropo to what’s being said about ANGELS…I think I heard Jeff say that David didn’t write the lyrics but he did write the music. The lyrics go “I don’t need you to tell me how to sing my song”, hahaha! David sounds like a little rebel! I LOVE this song..David should sing it to JIVE!! and maybe to some of his fans too, but he’s too sweet!
pensive..that was bee-u-tee-ful!
Rascal- I also think David Isn’t completely satisfied. I’m no pro, but this production is so freakin wack. If David isn’t happy with it, then poor baby. Most artists are very precise about their visions and will accept nothing less (see Prince). I mean, I know David isn’t in that position, but being the perfectionist that he is, this type of thing could really be upsetting him. Dissatisfaction with one’s work is a horrible feeling that refuses to go away, especially for an artist. Of course, since he’s David, we’ll probably never know about any of that.
silverfoxe- Please dont remain angry at Ellen. I mean, I love Ellen. She’s WAAAY better than Oprah, Tyra or those battling b*$#es (especially Hasslebeck) on the view. So she prefferred Cook over our David, and said he should win. She never actually directly critisized David. She’s allowed to have an opinion too. Her opinion doesn’t really matter more than any of ours. So I disagree with her about the Davids. So what? I still love her show and watch it everyday. Just try to forgive and forget, okay? Hopefully, she’ll warm up to David when she meets him.
I liked the idea of trying to listen to this as though it were the first time. This was hard since I’ve listened to a number of different versions dozens and dozens of times. BUT, when I put on fresh ears, I found that I actually liked this version. If I wasn’t expecting the strong vocals on the bridge, then I didn’t miss them. It doesn’t have the spiritual power of the version from the Regis and Kelly show ages ago, or the over-the-top magic of the Tulsa version, but I can live with it.
Also, my two cents for a Xmas single (I think a Xmas album is not in the cards) is “Mary did you know?” I love that song!
And that sweet face at the top of the page! Ohmigosh!
that sweet face at the top is thinking..
Yupp …life is good…….
Life is good with David!!!!
Would love to know the story behind the pic at Latham on SnarkiyArchie site…It is very un-David-like..hopefully he did not need saving..The people up in Latham are actually very nice folks…
Ronaldsf: I agree with your comment: “Ellen will either pretend it never happened, or confess that he liked David Cook more during AI but now loves loves Archie.”
She will probably really play down or ignore what happened before the finale. David is much more polite than I would be toward her. I would probably ask her: “So tell me about why you said what you said before the finale.”
Perpetual lurker here, just checking in to catch up and very late to the discussion. Gosh, it’s feeling like a bit of a downer. Just what was the expectation for “Angels” anyway? How spoiled are we? David has been telling us for weeks that his CD:
• has a little something for everyone (not everything for everyone)
• will definitely have a pop feel to it
• does not limit him to a particular flavor of music because he is just 17 and intends to “shop around”
• contains some things over which he had no control
I’m a Platinum Plus Archie, meaning older than any of you who were willing to disclose your age in a previous discussion, so old my ODD requires medication. I have seen/heard David’s every public move/sound since I discovered him in January. It has been 40+ years since I listened to pop radio, but I do now, partly to hear “Crush” and partly out of curiosity. Thank goodness rascal issued a warning about the state of pop music these days. The electronically layered noise that serves to accompany the vocals drives me cra-zeh, as SF would say. David’s voice, which is simultaneously warm and soaring to me, is so much better than what I hear from other artists; and “Angels” is so much better than similarly produced songs because of David’s voice. Maybe some of the disappointment that has been expressed here today is really impatience. We know what David can do and will do, but that will be a process, not a single song, or even a single CD. I know that critical feedback has its place and I am probably too protective—it’s a grandma thing—but I guess I just want all of David’s fans to joyfully bask in one more milestone moment of his unstoppable success.
silverfoxe/–thanks for the gravatar info..easy enough..can you feel him looking at you in this Pic…should have been there when I took the pic..Holy Cow….When he looks at you …you FEEL IT!!!!.. I can still feel it all these months later….
……”.WHAAT A FEEELING!!!.”…just to quote David
ok- I must be technologically challenged..did the avatar work?
pensive #124 – thanks for sharing those links – I will definitely be going back to check them out more carefully.
GranFan #134 – loved your post!
GranFan- I’m with you…his voice is “simultaneously warm and soaring to me”…but I might up the temperature from warm to molton, hotttt, laaavvvvaaaa
GranFan–I also loved your post! Please lurk no longer…and join us!
Yipee! Deluxe ed already in iTunes for pre-ordering — gaaah!!!!!
With 1.5 threads to catch up, so of course the 1st thing any true-blue archie would do is hit the player. listening now
Done listening.
m.a.d. n.o.w.
I better hit the bike to let off steam.
Well guess what? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It’s going to be a hit on the radio. This is beautiful, and so NOT bumblegum.
Granfan, welcome!! Please keep posting!!
Also, about the Christmas album idea, I said right off the bat that I see him doing it NEXT year, not this year. Just clearing things up…
Hi GranFan – “Maybe some of the disappointment that has been expressed here today is really impatience. We know what David can do and will do, but that will be a process, not a single song, or even a single CD. I know that critical feedback has its place and I am probably too protective—it’s a grandma thing—but I guess I just want all of David’s fans to joyfully bask in one more milestone moment of his unstoppable success.”
I am going to wait until I hear the entire album, along with bonus tracks to have a final say though. I do like this version of Angels, though in a couple of place his voice is somewhat taken over by the instrumentals. Having said this I prefer to hear David’s voice and little else, but acknowledge that it must be this way for now.
You are also correct in that we have to remember to celebrate this milestone of David’s! First album that will be the beginning of many firsts to come for him. What a rush!
djasgirl..OK..for you I will start watching Ellen again..and I’ll tell you a secret..I missed her, I was just really upset at her. I’m really looking forward to see David draw her in..she gonna say..”WHAT JUST HAPPENED??” WHAT WAS I THINKING?” hahaha! She’s not gonna know what hit her!
GranFan…Welcome..please stay! We’re a friendly bunch.. CRA-ZEH, but friendly! I used to be “freaky” too but I’ve been really well behaved lately and I am so proud of myself! I know I should be a better example for these young fellow ODD’ers, but you obviously KNOW me, so you know we need you here!
djb…veryyyy CUTE!!
happy…HOT!!
jackryan..please don’t tell me you don’t like ANGELS!! cuz I love it..not as much as the tour version, but still…
Now I have to go lurk around & see what David was up to today..
silverfoxe- I picked out an avatar “to wear” on special occasions, like say when David is wearing the stylish belt and jeans, would you like to see it?
djb #82: ‘David has gone from amazing to MORE amazing – How is that possible??’
Leave it up to David to do just that again and again and again, and oh! again.
Loving Angels, love the Tulsa version, love the AI version, love the album version, love them all.
Yeap ODD in overdrive.
djb: if you need the defib, I think happy had it last.
you are too funny: did not make it to cd album. I like that one too.
Wow! So many different reactions! What’s going on? And why are some of you disappointed? And, djasgirl, I’m soooo going to pretend that you did not call this production “freakin whack.”
NO, YOU DIDN’T!
But, obviously, we’re entitled to our opinions, and I’ll pretend that we are all in love with this version of “Angels.”
This version that lulled me to a peaceful sleep after an unrestful day. This version that took the pain away from a toothache I had this morning. THIS VERSION that had me falling in love all over again with David’s velvet voice! Sigh.
You called it *whack.*
Dayum!
I’ve never rushed home so fast in my life. And maybe because I was expecting to be disappointed, when I finally got to play Angels, I LOVED it.
The texture, the subtle vibrato of David’s voice came through beautifully on my stereo. The way he caresses certain phrases (“Let their wings unfold” in particular) gave me chills.
This version passed the litmus test for me – tears, and lots of them. But not only tears, I found myself bopping around my living room when it started to rock out, pumping my fist in the air. It’s an anthem, folks, Archie’s anthem –maybe an ArchAngel anthem. Gotta go play it again!
panamom: David’s performances of “Angels” come in all shapes and sizes. I was trying to think the last time I heard an artist sing a song with variations as many times as David sang “Angels.” Couldn’t come up with one–the best thing is we have such a menu of “Angels” to select from that one of his performances is bound to be our personal favorite. How lucky can we be?
Did anyone listen to the 92.3 Fly interview David did this morning? He elaborates more on AI, closing his eyes, says “abusive father” is an oxymoron and more. One of my favorite interviews to date. SnarkyArchies has the video and FOD has the audio.
I just love David’s voice. I have given this a lot of thought and it is absolutely the sound of his voice that I am drawn to. I feel this way about Van Morrison as well. While his voice is the opposite of David’s in some ways (ie: not soaring,) I can listen to Van Morrison sing all day. I get lost in the sound of the voice more than the song. But then…. when he sings a song that touches me either through the lyrics or the music- there I behold…. a life-giving pleasure.
djb- here it is…don’t forget to yell “clear”….
granfan, #134: as a loooong time lurker myself, i was glad to see your post. Particularly ”I know that critical feedback has its place and I am probably too protective—it’s a grandma thing—but I guess I just want all of David’s fans to joyfully bask in one more milestone moment of his unstoppable success.”
that struck me as i feel that sometimes david’s fans are espicially critical. sometimes the line between opinion and feedback carries over to just plain negative and unecessary.
i’m with you in that i want to bask in in each milestone….let the basking begin!
****silverfoxe & hello gorgeous: you two have made me LOL on many days when i needed a lift – thank you
Tofan/# 149
–you cannot use phrases like “The way he caresses ” certain phrases or anything for that matter when it comes to david with only one defib going around..we will not make it to 11/11 for sure…..from what I hear-happy/#145– had it last..haha thanks silverfoxe
panamom- i am right there with ya-LOVE em all !!
Have you listened to “Nature Boy”
betta sit down for that one….
If he ever sang Nature Boy now- with his mature voice- it surely be the end to at least a few of us..
I’m with TOfan on this one. But I first made up my mind to leave all expectations and comparisons aside. I was rocking to the music and I think that is what David might have been wanting to do with this variation. I am wondering what is it that we are struggling with. Then I thought is there a disconnect with the message in the song? Does it feel kind of sacrilegious because of the history we all have with this song and David? And he didn’t rock it out with any of the other times he performed it. Just thinking out loud. Am going to go listen again.
djb #153, oh you mean “the way he caresses” those velvety notes in Angels? Yes, mm…
I can’t wait for David to “caress” the notes on a Spanish song. I wrote this over on IDF:
He got us with his lip-licking. Then he killed us with chapstick. Can you imagine what will happen to us when he puts that tongue on some soft Spanish consonants?
I know, I know… I’m cruel!
tawnilady..Why thank you..but really, there were many times when I was being serious..it just came out funny! I hate when that happens..and it happens all the time..can’t figure it out! I think it must be the Miracle of David! He’s infected me with happiness!!
Bulletin, Bulletin…we interupt this thread to bring you the following update..
Current standings on ITunes as of 8:pm EST:
Top 100:
CRUSH #15
ANGELS #47
Top Albums:
DAVID ARCHULETA #8
WE LOVE YOU MADLY, DAVID!!
THUD…………………………………..
ronaldsf – LOL–a Spanish song will send us into a complete meltdown.
David is going to be on Bonnie Hunt on 11/18. Oh my gosh, can you see David and Bonnie talking together. It will be “Cute” meets “The Ultimate Cutie.”
Rascal, I really do agree with what you have said about the over kill on this . I’ve listened to it over and over and now, it’s really growing on me. I think because we’ve all heard David sing Angels just simply, and of course beautifuly. Wow, he’s sure come a long way from when he first sang this on AI.
I love the arrangement, I ust don’t like the chrous… it will be much better if the harmony is not that loud…
I doubt I will love (love, but not crazy) any studio version if David sang that song LIVE, I believe “Crush” will be the same case. Because everytime he sang, he improved!!! However the studio version might just record the best version at a certain point.
It’s so much fun to watch his LIVE performances, because I am so excited about every “what’s going on” version… I am looking forward his “Crush” performances.
First, I LOVE the new version of Angels. I see David’s soulful vocal and interpretive artistry as separate from the mix and arrangement.
As for the arrangement, I am also a big fan of the first verse. It seems like there was an effort to have a bigger contrast between sections – a softer, more meditative start that leads to a harder, rockier conclusion. Only thing is, once it hit the 2nd chorus the arrangement doesn’t “build up” much higher. Instead, the instruments get louder starting in the bridge, and his voice gets drowned out a bit. Still, David manages to create an emotional peak for the song with his vocal choices in the bridge and 3rd chorus.
I’ll try to write something in the Artist thread later and on SnarkyArchies (I got invited to be a blogger there! Yay!), but I just want to say for now that I LOVE the note at around 3:04 during the bridge. He hit this same note in Tulsa and in some other performances: it is the 4th note on the scale. Why I like it so much, and why I find it so interesting, is that is dissonant in that it doesn’t fit the harmonic structure (the chord) in the backing instruments. But here he isolates it and makes it stand out even more.
Eva Cassidy “found” notes like these a lot and this made for some interesting melodic choices. David likes to do this, too. Musical yumminess!
Kizzi #150 – I loved the 92.3 Fly interview. I downloaded the interview and wiled away almost an entire plane trip listening. The time whizzed by. There are some great video clips of the interview on FOD if you haven’t seen them yet.
djb…are you ok? Dayum!! (I LOVE THAT..ronaldsf!) You are sooo creative with the quirky words..you & David! Got any more?
Kizzi..Hi! i just came back from listening to the 92.3 interview. Very enjoyable..David is getting to be a real PRO! He talks with his HANDS! They were going a mile a minute! haha! And he again mentioned HIS OWN TOUR is being planned for early next year!! woo-hoo!! Not only are his dreams coming true, but ours too!
ronaldsf – Love your comments! “Musical yumminess” indeed. I too love that dissonant note – really a brave and unusual choice. Let us know when you post on SnarkyArchies so we can visit.
I reread my comment above and didn’t say clearly enough that I do NOT like how the arrangement worked out in the 2nd half of the song. LOL
Also, I find that there is a real difference depending on how you listen to it. When I listen to it on my headphones, it sounds pretty good. But when I play it out of my laptop’s speaker, I really do see Rascal’s image of poor David getting stirred up and lost in a bowl of pancake batter. LOL
OK- I am up off the floor -thanks alot ronaldsf/#156
speaking of david’s spanish tongue rolls –have you ever heard him say “Merengue” when talking about his Mom’s musical influence on him….yummy yummy….
djb!?!
Everyone, everybody step aside!
CLEAR!!
lol
ronaldsf #156- maybe I can be a “soft Spanish consonant” for Halloween….
davidfanLIZ and SF: That is my absolute favorite interview to date. Love how he talks about his Dad. And a band, OMGosh, can you imagine! His first tour–I am there–I will have to retire and just follow the tour. Want to join me? I can’t wait to see him interview on The Bonnie (freakin’) Hunt Show; I’ll have to take that day off just to savor and enjoy.
ronaldsf – this version doesn’t do well on laptop speakers–however, if you boost the vocals on iTunes it is clearer and his voice isn’t lost; best is out of Bose speakers/surround sound–you are immersed in the vocals and the music fades.
ronaldsf next time a warning is def needed..so I can hold onto my chair…Now I can’t go to the 3:04 note till I am fully recovered…..I am sure it is the one that makes me weak in the knees…
happy #169-very funny–
djb #167, yes… the way his mouth makes out “merengue” is mucho yummy.
This is my favorite Spanish video of David to date. His accent is really good! And WARNING towards the end when he says “Puerto Rico”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QTf1vrzvkQ
MWAHAHAHAH!
And yes, I love LOVE 3:04…
3:04!! 3:04!! 3:04!! LOL
happy #169, You should wear a soft, velvety “th” for Halloween! LOL
Oh, sorry: *muy yummy in #173
I know, the Spanish teacher in me…
every time I submit a comment ..the photo at the top of this page appears and the look on davids face is as if he can hear everything we say and is thinking…..hhmmm…really guys…
I know I am crah-zee…oh well
djb #153: hahaha, glad I didn’t add “at the crescendo, he embraces each note with a fierce passion” lol
Kizzi: Thanks for the info about the Latham, N.Y., interview, just watched it. What lovely people!!! They really “got” David and it showed. Sweet how shy he was about singing Crush but what a good sport he was/is. That girl will be in a daze for days!!
ronaldsf: dang it, gotta go replay and listen for that note!
djb – “Merengue” is lethal. If he sings a Spanish song and it has the cadence and tone of “merengue”, well, just forget defibrillators, I will just have to go on life support!
ronaldsf – he hits a fascinating dissonant note when he did SBM on “The View” during a run. I have found it riveting and I loved the look the pianist gave him after that run.
brb… off to Puerto Rico er..youtube for a quick spanish lesson from Mr Hotchuleta himself…..
TOfan: I really enjoyed that interview. He was relaxed and happy. He enjoys being around people his age and he seems to be embracing this radio interviews with glee. Isn’t it a joy to see him happy and doing what he dreamt of doing?
Love all the food analogies! Yummy is right!
Wow, so much to try and catch up on… but the most important thing is the release of Angels… I LOVE IT! It is so interesting to read all of the contrasting responses, but I have to say, aside from a couple of his standout tour performances, this is my favorite version. Maybe I’m not critical enough… I have a music background as do many of you, but I’ve never really been one to analyze the music I listen to. I just know what gives me pleasure and this does. I am particularly in love with the way he used his falsetto… to me, this is just another sign of his growing confidence… and, I love the passion and his spirit in this performance.
Loved the Fly interview today. He is so adorkable, and clearly, getting more and more comfortable with these interviews and all of the fan stuff. Yet, he is so grounded and humble… he’s cutting such a swath as he visits these radio stations… DJs are marveling over his incredible personality… so much love and joy from this kid!
How can we wait until the 11th? It still feels so far away! My daughter was giving me a hard time today because she happened to notice on my itunes account that I’ve listened to Touch My Hands over 400 times, Crush over 350 times (and she doesn’t know how often I stream it from various internet sources!) I just can’t seem to listen to anyone but David sing anymore. And I used to have such eclectic and varied tastes! Argh!
ronaldsf..on that video David also says “que queres”
translation..”what do you want?” or “what would you like?” I would have told him exactly what!! Then I would have been arrested!
David always pronounces Spanish words correctly..he can really RRROOOLLLL his R’s..Very sensuous, and he doesn’t even know how it comes across! haha! WHEW!
Silverfoxe, you are so right… he has no idea how he comes across… or, maybe he does, but just doesn’t go there… it would be “weird” as he would say! How can he be so unaffected by everything that’s happening to him right now?!
que queres..!!…viva Puerto Rico….happy happy…where are you when I need you.!!……THUD………….
BULLETIN…Itunes update…TOP ALBUMS,
DAVID ARCHULETA #7
and climbing!!
GO BIG D!!
#7 and it hasn’t even been 24 hours!
the problem here is that there is no adult supervision…..
where is rascal?- he goes out lurking and leaves us unsupervised and without the proper resuscitation equipment…very irresponsible…
momofteens/silverfoxe-
David is a real natural “people person “and it shows in these candid moments and I think he is starting to GET how he comes across but does think it is wierd that the fans eat up every moment they can get of him..that is the 17 year old in him…he does not GET just how SPECIAL he is…and that is just david being david….
happy..umm I think we are the adults-sorry- and rascal went off to confession for all the damage he has done her tonight!!! haha
djb #79 “Mr Hotchuleta” ROTFL (yet not)
Kizzi #80: You’re right, JOY is definitely the word. Sometimes I smile at random times during the day just thinking about that. Strange, huh?
Can’t quite picture David signing a petition, but when it comes to music, I guess. Check this out (his name’s at the end):
http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6609220.html
happy #187: Rascal’s probably ordering extra paddles right about now…
oopps..I meant ” here ” not “her” tonight…what a slip
ronaldsf started it…what with the Spanish and all…, me? I’m just trying to keep SF out of jail and the rest of the gang healthy while sewing my Halloween costume…now where can I get some velvet…?
Who is SF ? and oh stay by my side when ronaldsf is around…I think we are all going to jail ..hahaha
silverfoxe —#7 and climbing in less than 24 hours…and it has not even been released yet!!!!YYEEAAHH
no kidding..GO BIG D!!!!!!!
happy..what happened to your defib??
hmmmmm …I’m loving David instead..ooooo,hmmmm
Sorry, I meant Angels instead..just singing along with David!
momofteens… I think when that particular video was made when he was speaking Spanish, he may not have realized how sensual he can be..but these last several weeks.and maybe even from the time of the chapstick vid, I think he started “getting it”..and I don’t think he minds it..how the women swoon over him. He’s actually become quite a teaser. I do think, however that he will not put himself seriously in a position to be tempted to go beyond his moral boundries. That’s why he doesn’t “go” there..he has other priorities. But I’ll bet he would LOVE to go there, ( after all, he a normal hot blooded Latino male ) just not now…
djb – SF is silverfoxe
Hello fellow Archappreciators !
I’m Platinum too and I call myself his Baltimore “grandmother”.
Today’s story: My own mother passed away at 93 on Sunday morning peacefully in her sleep as she had wished. I really had not begun to process her homegoing until today because I had gone to Boston Sunday afternoon and Monday to train librarians to do a wonderful program called Mother Goose on the Loose — a music and movement and early literacy program for families with children from birth to 3 years old. The singing and sharing the workshop was joyful and loving . Today I began to feel my Mom’s passing and at lunch I felt a powerful longing to just hear David’s voice.
I wanted to hear the sweetness, the strength, the love which he sends forth in his singing. this longing to hear him sing kept recurring as I sat by myself reflecting on my Mom and my siblings and the closing of another chapter of our lives.
So I just told myself I would have to wait until I got home and would log on to noting David and uTube and read and listen.
I went out to the car and started the engine and … you guessed didn’t you … there was Crush playing ! And even just hearing David sing Crush, about a first Crush, …not Angels, not Imagine, not Nature Boy …Just david’s voice singing anything would have been the same for me …tears of healing and joy … JOY flooded me !
thank you all for understanding and for being there once again today. Thank you Rascal for this place where we can
share our most wonderful David.
Is there anyone in the Baltimore/DC area who wants to get together on or around NOv. 11th to listen and talk about the album with me, a 65 year old grandma and music teacher ?
I try to communicate my love of David with my family and friends, but the sharing is inadequate. I would love to just sit…even in silence…and listen to the album..with someone who “gets it”.
Is anyone in Baltimore or Columbia, MD who loves David as much as I do ?
Thanks, Regina, a platinum Archaprreciator
happy #192..uummm..Puerto Rico??
silverfoxe/#195—so when the “Normal Hot Blooded Latino male” comes to visit us in jail he would not mind singing “Jail House Rock” — just to tease us???
No. 6!
David’s glow really is spreading worldwide. Check out this vid from a fan in Japan, titled “David Archureta” – kinda dreamy actually (Thanks, Rascal, your “pad” is so cool. Night all!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv2x57cHELU
Thanks for the update caseydog
All I can say is WOW
rrbwade-Our thoughts and prayers are with you for your loss..David’s music does have a way of soothing the soul and appearing at just the right moments…
93 yrs.Gold Bless her…glad to hear it was peaceful for her and your family..much love
rrbwade- Sorry -meant ..God Bless Her
Regina, love the idea of sitting and listening to the album with others who “get” David. Unfortunately, I live in San Francisco, but maybe we can all do an online thing together. I’m still puzzled by the fact that there are people who don’t “get” David. I know we’ve discussed that before, but a lot of people just don’t understand why I love this kid… they think it’s weird, or worse, creepy… I don’t love him for his physical beauty, though I certainly appreciate it! I love him for his incredible spirit and character, which only enhances the amazing tone and quality of his voice.
And, my prayers are with you in your loss. My mom passed away earlier this year, and I am still processing it. David’s voice does provide healing, doesn’t it?
djb…WHO IS SF?? haha! That’s funny! no one else knows either! ha!

SF- someone was having an attack and I had to pass the defib on…don’t know who has it now, we’ve got people dropping like flies though…weak, we are weak!!!
May I suggest that we all get in shape for 11/11? I think we need a little training to strengthen the heart, improve the lung capacity, and ready ourselves for the endurance that will be required. No one can be expected to run such a marathon of love without training. We must build our stamina. Prepare, prepare- only 2 weeks remain and then…..you take your life in your hands.
Let’s make emergency plans, shall we?
#6????
I think I might need a xanax to get to sleep tonight. WOW.

To each his own I guess……….for me this version of Angels is the best among those I heard…from the show…from the studio version…and from the tour except for Tulsa….but I like this more than the Tulsa version..its more “radio friendly”…I actually am liking this song again because of the so called “layers”………….i didnt like the song originally………………….but this is tons better than Robbie Williams’

Soooo..ronaldsf /#217
Suddenly jail sound appealing..Could it be the “Jail House Rock” serenade we have coming when IT becomes legal……hmmmm.sure now you come back..sans paddles I assume..hahaha
Good Night silverfoxe..sweet dreams!
#223 your scenario got me thinking wow wouldn’t it be great if, through some great sacrificial act, I got arrested to save David from something. Let’s say from some cuh-razed fan, what have you. (As in someone else.)
And then he would come to thank me by singing for me in jail (“Stand By Me”!) and all the Angels would come and capture it and put it up on YouTube, and wouldn’t that be awesome!
And I would wear a shirt saying “I would go to jail for Archie…” and suddenly the scenario starts to look really WRONG lol
Sorry, I don’t remember my dreams much (I don’t sleep enough), so I guess I have to compensate lol.
about Angles- I love the note at 3:30…
Goodnight all, thanks for the fun.
gnite happy
#225
now you go to the top of this page and look david in that sweet face and read #225 to him and look at his reaction….ROTFL…really
typo- Angels…still love the note at 3:30…
BTW- I have a hairpin to pick the lock…
“SF murphy played the tenor saxophone,
Little HG was blowin on the slide trombone.
The rascal boy from brooklyn went crash, boom, bang,
The whole rhythm section was the ODD gang….
Let’s rock, everybody let’s rock…”
goodnight again, thanks for the fun…
i do think wierd might come to mind..however you spell it..
ODD never rang truer!!!
OK gnite all…..it was fun..
#228 djb, I would totally love to say it to that face! I’m sure he would get a kick out of it!
I wish I could find out what he thought of the ballad. That wasn’t all rainbows and puppies either lol.
Well I have to go now – have to study for my legal ethics exam. (And say a prayer before bedtime lol)
Good night!
Legal ethics……..kind of late for that but tomorrow is a new day……gnite
happy #229, Awesome lyrics! LOL
Archupoetry is addicting, isn’t it!? I love Archupoetry!!
Well, it looks like it comes down to my 3:04 going head-to-head against your 3:30. We’ll play clean and fair – but just so you know your 3:30 is going DOWN!!
Okay, now I REALLY have to go. G’nite y’all!
Hi all, This is a first for me. I just could not resist. When I first read your post Rascal I kind of held my breath not wanting to be disappointed. Not that I believe that was your intent, but still that was my honest reaction, I actually went to his concert in DC with alot of friends. Angels hands down was my favorite. I loved how he sang it! It was amazing!
Isn’t it amazing how we all hear music and react to it uniquely. As I have listened to this new versian my first thought was what a genious David is. David has so many layers. This to me was another David layer. I totally felt him feeling it. To me it was another way to express what I think to him he could express many ways. I was feeling it and I don’t want to make the mistake of boxing him in to fit my personal expectations which in the end would probably be very limiting. Yes it was a liittle different, but I have to say I loved them both for different reasons and I am totally ok with that. One does not have to be better than the other. I love that I have been able to hear his interpretation in a dffierent way. It’s all good.
Angel is at #28 right now and Crush is at #15 the Album is at #6
DAVID JAMES ARCHULETA ROCKS!!!
Rascal,
I too normally would agree with everything that you say, but this time not so much. We all know that the experience of hearing David in person and listening to a recording is different. A recording can be tweaked so that everything sounds perfect, but maybe not as pure as you might like. Yes and sometimes it can seem as though the instruments are overpowering the voice. I think that we are just so use to the AI sound that now as we are getting a taste of what the pros have done, some of us are not quite ready for it all and it’s a little hard to absorb it. I love it and I think that it will appeal to all that hears it! I can’t wait to hear the rest of how the album turned out…also keep in mind David is still 17 and so he is going to gear his sound to the younger generation.
Watching some of David’s interviews again tonight. Was reminded of these lyrics. tee hee!
You’ve got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mister In-Between
You’ve got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene
haha!
grammytara – On the contrary, I pretty much despised the AI studio recordings as well, but for different reasons.
Look, I’ve said from the very beginning that I am, at the end of the day, much more interested in what David will be doing five years or so from now than what he is likely to do today. Because he is so young (in so many ways), it will take time for him to evolve into an artist who is truly at one with his instrument and his work. There will be a great deal of experimentation until then. Some of it will be magnificent. Some of it will misfire. A lot of it will be just fine, but perhaps unremarkable (for him).
This first album has already been characterized by David himself as something of an experiment. It is not intended to be cohesive or even necessarily consistent. I have a great affection and appreciation for David’s talents, but, as I have said quite often, I would be doing him a disservice if I wasn’t completely honest in my criticism.
I will leave it to others to gush and coo over every morsel. I happen to think I have an idea of what Mr. Archuleta is capable of, and no one will be happier than I to fetter the man with rapturous exaltation when he achieves it.
Momofteens, I am having the same problem. I too don’t want to listen to anyone else sing but David. I do try but I come right back to him. I guess I will just have to play out this obsession although it seems to be getting worse not better.
Juliebug, I remember the tune-how fitting for David. I have throughly enjoyed the interviews. He gets tossed into situations and rises to the occasion. How many 17-year-old-young men do you know who could do this so well? I work with college age guys who can barely put two words together much less answer all kinds of extemporaneous questions.
I love the updates on the rising of David’s songs and album. You guys are great sleuths. Silverfoxe I so have enjoyed your avatars as well as comments. I think you are head cheerleader here. Hello Gorgeous I spent some time at your great site today. I have a question. Are you Hello Gorgeous as a way of saying hello to yourself in the mirror everyday or is it the way you greet everyone you meet? Just curious!!!
Wow – I love that phrase “rapturous exaltation”!! I just smiled reading it in anticipation of that time and I am not kidding.
“I have a question. Are you Hello Gorgeous as a way of saying hello to yourself in the mirror everyday or is it the way you greet everyone you meet?”
Neither! It’s all about David!
I told this story so many times in previous posts, I’m going to see if one of my fellow NotingDaviders can tell it for me (if any of you remember).
Check out this video. David is the cutest ever. They said he didn’t know he was being taped.

RE: Hello Gorgeous -
Barbra, Funny Girl, David, Hollywood Week – Helllllooooo Gorgeous!!!!!…..
Do I have that right? haha!
Ha! All the talk of soft consonants inspired me to download “Contigo En La Distencia” finally (what took me so long?) so I can play it anytime, anywhere now. OMGosh, the rolls and riffs and runs and….. and he’s a KID!!!… oh geesh. The wonder that is David. Sorry I digress, I know the topic is David’s CURRENT music!
And now, pretty much totally off-topic—on the iTunes banner at the top, right there next to David’s CD advert (#6!! GO DAVID ! ! mmwahhh!!), is an ad for a free Sheryl Crow vid that is a ROCKIN’ **great** poster-child-of-a-song for peace, you might want to check it out. I’m off to leave David a message on his myspace phone#—I bet he’d love it too!
David Archuleta: on iTunes at 5::30 am on East Coast:
#2 Top Pop Albums ( imagine that & it isn’t even released yet!)
#6 Top Albums
#15 Crush Top Songs
#35 Angels Top Songs
Crush is #7 in Top Pop Songs
Angels is # #11 in Top Pop Songs
Thank you Juliebug! It seems I missed an obvious explanation. Thanks Lise I was curious what the morning would bring.
I popped awake this morning hoping to remember a dream but no. I do envy the lovely dreams you all are having. Dreaming used to be one of my favorite things to do but try as I might I just cannot remember my dreams anymore. A dream analyst said I just have to set my mind to it and it would happen again. Maybe these advancing years are making setting my mind a bit more difficult. I had the greatest technicolor dreams and visions-sometimes almost predicted the future. I learned in psych that if you don’t dream you will go over the edge so I know I still do but seem not to be able to remember them-unless maybe I am bonkers. Naah! Only if I didn’t “get” David would I be crazy. Oh dear, I’m talking to myself!!
to our dear, wise granfan (who admits to lurkin’),
please, lurk no more. i just love love love your post and sharings! you simply got it!
big cheers to our granfan!
Happy..hon, how in the heck did you get MY leg on your avatar?? And I deny, deny, deny everything!
Oh..It’s NOT my leg..it’s YOURS! Whew! that was close!

Juliebug#245, yep! That pretty much sums it all up! Great job! Thanks!
Oh goodie! More radio interviews. Thanks for that info, SF.
I had the pleasure of drifting off to sleep last night, just listening to David’s speaking voice. It’s getting deeper while maintaining such a distinct sound. I’d recognize him anywhere.
Now, those new numbers on itunes say it all! We are a devout fanbase, who are helping to launch our boy out into the world.
Great job, everyone!
Here’s one of his early morning radio interviews from Boston:

HG..David’s original fanbase may be the reason for the iTune #’s initially, however, because of AZOFF’s brilliant promo schedule, David is gaining new fans everywhere!
We MUST remember that NOVEMBER 11 will be THE most important day in David’s career. The physical sales of David’s CD in the stores will be the determining factor for David to shoot up the BILLBOARD Chart..The iTunes #’s are very important too, but we HAVE to buy the CD in the stores..I hope Everyone who preordered the album from iTunes will also purchase at least one in a store! I
can’t stress that enough! To have David go to #1 on BILLBOARD with the album will propel him to Superstardom..not just in OUR Archuworld..But throughout the music world..He’ll be that much closer to fulfilling OUR dreams for him to create the MUSIC we
know he is capable of..the stories he has to tell, the musical messages he has for the world, the lyrics and music he sees everywhere, he needs to put it all down to music! My dream for David is that he won’t have to wait til he’s 25..He’s a prodigy..he can DO IT NOW! We all know it! He doesn’t need anyone telling him “how to sing his songs” as the lyrics go on one of his first recordings “Don’t Tell Me”.. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have control now..so WE have to make it happen…BUY the CD in the stores on 11/11, An ARCHUWORLD HOLIDAY..the day we celebrate DAVID ARCHULETA, WORLD REKNOWNED SUPERSTAR!
David..we love you madly!!
FROM MJ Blog this morning (had breakfast with David)
Holy Cr*ap!!!
So, here is what we know from MJ’s talk with David and Jeff this morning:
** Co-wrote “Don’t Let Go” with JC from NSYNC
** Co-wrote “A Little Too Not Over You” with Matt Girard and Robie Neville
** Co-wrote the WalMart bonus track with Daniel Bedingfield (it is acoustic and the heaviest song on the album)
** Wrote “Falling” when he was just 14 years old (music and lyrics)
** Wrote 8 songs in the last two weeks of the deadline and 4 are on the albums
14 years old – music and lyrics??
Wha?????
Am I the only one who is a walking goosebump right now??? My goosebumps have goosebumps!
OMG!!!
Joner..Everyone…HELLOOOOO! What Have I been saying!! David SEES music & Lyrics everywhere! This is why he starts singing at random, out of nowhere..He thinks & breaths MUSIC & LYRICS!
David is a musical GENIUS of the highest order..WE AIN”T SEEN NOTHIN’ YET!
Joner #258, That list is buttercuppin’ incredible! (thanks, snarkies) Wow, what … are … we … in … for?!? (Sorry Rascal, but a definite coo & gush moment!)
SF – #257 I appreciate your explanation, but I have a question.
I pre-ordered David’s album from iTunes and I’ll be at Walmart on Nov. 11th; however, I also pre-ordered from Amazon. How does that fit into this?
Thanks so much!
SF – I know, but it’s sooooo cool to see it in black and white isn’t it?
And, 8 songs in 2 weeks – 4 of which made the cut on his CD???
OMG!!! It’s always shocking because David is not a self promoter (just ANOTHER thing I ADORE about him) so it always takes me a little off-guard when I see the magnitude of this kid’s talent!
Wow…
As far as Amazon..I’m cancelling my orders from them..BUT that’s just me! Instead I’m going to BUY the
CDs at stores on 11/11..Walmart, Target, Circuit City, etc. And I also preordered the DELUXE CD! If you can’t buy the CD on 11/11, that’s ok..as long as you DO BUY IT AT A STORE! We want David to hit the BILLBOARD
CHARTS! YEAH!
I love the falsetto on Angels.. and the ending gives me chills everytime
archiesfan4life..I want to clarify again that I am NOT saying you should Cancel your order from Amazon. I am only because buying it from a store is better for David.
If you all think we’ve been on a great ride with so far!
Well.. HOLD ON! he’s gettin ready to BLAST us to OUTER SPACE to a place where no one’s been before!
And I’m on board and READY TO GO!!
oops! a great ride with DAVID so far..
omgosh! david wrote ‘falling”!!!!!
coo & gush……coo & gush ………coo & gush
that will be the 1st song i listen to, can’t wait.
did you hear about the solo tour ? it’s on snarkies. OMDA! i’m there – wherever THERE is!
SF good morning.
..just had my morning(??) coffee with a constant loop of 2:59 -3:03 of Angels –the ooohhhhaaohhh part- and have decided it sends HIM to another stratosphere and takes us with him …who needs a vitamin or caffeine when we can have a shot of this …haha
get ready to Power Shop Davids CD in stores…the best stocking stuffer..Secret Santa….etc out there!!!
He needs those numbers and he has it in US!!!!
.Spread the word….
….
!!!!!!Go LittleCrusher Go!!!!!!
Angels # 23 and Soaring!!!
And there will be a SOLO tour. SOLO. As in alone, by oneself, nobody else, SOLO! Coo, gush, goo, mush, thud.
LOVING THIS VERSION OF ANGELS – SIMPLY ARCHUGORGELICIOUS.
Loved the Tulsa angels but I love this too! I mean, come on, it’s David Archuleta! How can we go wrong??!!
#244/alicia – that is the cutest ever! just love those famous David head movements when he’s dancin’!
another cool video i watched last night on FOD, David singing acapella (“Crush”), he struggled a bit on whether to sing a verse or go to chorus, it was fascinating to watch his genius in action.
Hey Josie, how are you? adjusting to the empty nest syndrome ok?
SF: Okay, now I’m confused. How does buying the physical CD from a store help David more than ordering it from Amazon (or, for that matter, downloading it from iTunes)?
And rascal, I appreciate your steady hand and your clear eye. Otherwise we would all float away on a cloud of gushing and cooing.
Josie, everyone!! just saying the words..David’s SOLO tour..it’s just TOO much to bear! I want to dance in the streets like the cra-zeh nut I am!! I am sooo spaced out right now..and I don’t even do caffeine !! David is my drug of choice..I’ve been on a HIGH since “Heaven” can’t come down, don’t wanna come down! What a feelin’ this is..almost too much for words..
Ya’ll think the stampede the other nite was somthin’, wait til the tickets go on sale for David’s SOLO tour!. We’re gonna CRASH the net tryin’ to get tickets online! It’s gonna be a cyberspace STAMPEDE! hahaha!
Still waiting for the gift card from Team Archies to make the pre-order… and I just check my mail box every 30 mins to see if I’ve got mail… almost crazy!!!
My fd will go to US in Dec, probably I will ask her to buy me one from Walmark…
I read on FOD that there are four songs on the album that he wrote and had done a lot of writing in the last two weeks before the deadline…because there was not enough good songs on the album…OMG…Jive is a major label!! You would think they could find great songs for David…they do for other artists! Why have they not made other good songs available to him?
davidfanLiz..David profits more from the physical CD in the hand sales. ALL sales are counted and are important, but from what I understood from FOD..the physical purchase in a store is much more beneficial for David and so I would rather BUY from a store on 11/11, than wait for Amazon to ship the CD’s. So even though I will have the DELUXE CD on 11/11, I will still buy from stores. That’s ME..everyone should do what they want, but I hope everyone buys at least one from a store. It’ll make a great gift and whoever you give it to will LOVE it and YOU too!
Hi Chickee and SF! David’s interview with Kiss 108 was pretty darn awesome. I’m really happy that Matty was so good to him. Chickee – did you hear it?
guys, I hope i’m not beating a dead horse here, but I feel awful about something yesterday, and I have to get it out. I did not express a point properly that I tried to make, (adrenaline rush hearing Angels), so I’ll try and do better now. Regarding the bridge, chorus, runs in the middle of Angel, whatever we’re calling it……
This little bit of heaven in Angels, was to me, some of the best, if not THE best, part of any song I have ever heard. and believe me, I’ve heard alot. I’ve loved Sinatra, Streisand, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Elton John, on and on forever. I should not have said I didn’t like the falsetto note. I could listen to David’s falsetto all day long. Point I was trying to make is that after listening to the runs all summer long, which sounded magical to me, I just hoped and prayed they would be included in the album version. and I guess I was just thrown off listening the first time and hearing a falsetto note in there instead of the notes we heard and so loved for so long. There are so many family members I have that just don’t “get David” like we do, and I wanted them to listen to Angels so I could say to them “now do you “get” him? do you??????? Sometimes they look at me with this weird look on their faces, I just don’t understand why they aren’t fascinated with that voice, as I am. This is a voice for the ages, as we all know. But that’s another story, right? To each his own, and all that.
thanks for listening guys, that was cathartic for me.
Rascal, rapturous exhaltation. love it love it.
silverfoxe- you are 100% correct and in case anyone did not notice 11/11 is Veterans Day and there is no mail delivery. So anyone waiting for the CD to be delivered on 11/11 ..it is not coming on that day…and I am sure it won’t come earlier…
Josie, no I haven’t heard it, but I will now. I still haven’t heard the ones from yesterday. I need about 4 hours! Are you reeling over our Red Sox season over “already.” wow, I miss the games!!
#281/chickee-
I know what you mean- we were so used to the magnificant yeah yeah yeahs all summer long that not hearing it is well..different …but 2:59-3;04 is simply outstanding for me and just imagine what he will do with it on his SOLO tour…Can’t wait
SF/I’ll dance in the streets right along with you! Now that would be quite the sight! What song should we pick to dance to? hmmmm. I’ll let you pick one ok? hahaha.
Cyberspace Stampede on 11/11, so funny. Can you imagine what this site will be like when we have ALL the album songs to talk about? HOLY COW!!
djb/solo tour. oh boy, get your medications up to date, oxygen tanks, paramedics……………
rascal’s got a new thread goin’….NEXT!
and add the helmut to prevent any further cranial damage from all the THUD’S
I have decided it would be best to be lying down when I hear the album for the first time..haha
i’m a occaisonal lurker & sometimes poster. Had to add my feelings about DA. Love this version of Angels the more I listen to it. Coming up on 30 consecutive plays on iTunes. Also chickee #281 – I am you! My family thinks I’m stalking DA. No one (except a 36yo neice & 3yo grandaughter) understands. Love that grandaughter. She’s me all over again. Sometimes I’m not sure why I’m so captivated by DA – his voice, music, his beautiful soul or what. And I am ODD.
I love it! Hey Rascal, run around the block then give it another listen! I know you’ll change your mind….you’ve done it before!!!!!
Rascal: I agree with you about it being overdone, in spades, but I also have to agree with Juliebug #7 that we are not his core demographic, and this song is designed for them, not us older fans. Nuance, which we mature folk appreciate more than we are likely to ever admit, is lost on the young, as well you know. For the bubblegum set more is simply, more, and they love it. I personally prefer the AI Studio version, despite its shortcomings. It still makes sense to me that he has to nail down his age groupies before he can bring them along with songs that he truly enjoys singing, songs with the sophistication and meaningfulness that we know he is capable of. I’m willing to wait for that time which will certainly come. In the meantime, lets hope that there will be a gem or two in his new album that we can truly treasure.
Hi
I have been a lurker here since about AI Top 6 when I discovered this site (and what a refreshing change it was to read well thought out posts that I almost always find myself going YES!)
As someone from about as far away as you can get (try New Zealand) I was truly in awe of David when he sung this on idol. To me it showed he sings songs he loves and what GUTS to sing a song that a good 90% of viewers had never heard of (OK maybe I’m being a little harsh on the music loving population of the States – but you get my drift) But Angels was HUGE over here for Robbie Williams and so I was like WOW!
Then came the tour and rendition after rendition came out on youtube and I was WOWing even more – this guy is simply astounding
Now we have the album version and I have just heard it for the first time. As others have stated we/I am not the target demographic so while I prefer David’s natural arrangements I still find myself speechless (although not by the look of this post) at the skill and style that still finds its way through this over produced version
Now when I hear the original version I WISH it was David
BTW Great site Rascal

Rascal,
I usually agree with you, but this is not one of those times. I really love this new arrangement and how it showcased David’s singing ability (well, I didn’t like the electric guitar part and there’s this part with too much harmony). I love how he recorded the ending that he does live instead of the one from the American Idol recording, which makes it a lot better. I really love his arrangement and have loved it since the Idol recording. But, what do I know, I’m just a kid who loves music…
Masterclass Lady’s review of new Angels after a fan (Janey79) sent it to her:
“………………. absolutely exquisite. The arrangement of this song is extremely well-formulated. The orchestration is luxurious and evokes all the passion and fervor that is at the core of this beautiful song.
However, never is David’s stellar voice obliterated by the lush score. His voice is truly transcendent and he adds some new and exciting vocal flourishes to this version of this song classic. I particularly loved the head voice component during the orchestral interlude, followed by the vocal gymnastics he displayed during his final take of the refrain.
And, yet, the expressive element in his voice is ubiquitous -he truly communicates the emotional core of this song with authenticity and sensitivity.”
The word that comes to mind to describe this version of “Angels” is FRESH. It is a relief not to hear the same version from the AI competition or the tour. I love it, especially for it’s uniqueness. It also had to be different enough from the UK version to justify it’s place on another album. It hits just the right note, IMHO.
