Becoming a Star

I was struck by this image from MJ’s Blog of David arriving at radio station MIx 98.5 in Boston this week.
Although we all know that David is the least likely artist in history to allow success and fame to go to his head, it is nevertheless natural to expect that he will become accustomed to it, and even come to appreciate the experience. His comfort in his new role as a public figure has certainly been evolving since the summer tour, when his generosity of spirit was so much in evidence by the dedication he showed to his fans. But until this image, I had never seen any glimpse of what might be characterized as David the star.
I don’t mean to suggest that there is a self aggrandizing aspect to this. David would no more think of himself as a star than he would the president of the United States. But there is a dimension of confidence in this image of him that is unmistakable. And new. And very exciting. To think of what he would have looked like less than a year ago arriving at an event full of strangers with expectations–adorable but a little tentative, happy but a bit bemused–the level of poise and self-posession in evidence here is quite remarkable. He even appears to be the calm strength in the middle of the chaos.
Folks, David the star is emerging.
I’m loving this pic! And, yes, David is very much emerging with a newfound confidence we haven’t seen during the tour. More power to him!
Now, you know David Archuleta is a star and the real success of American Idol when he gets mentioned in the “top gag lines of 2008″ (see below):
http://www.examiner.com/x-1527-New-York-Government-Examiner~y2008m10d30-Top-five-political-gag-lines-of-2008
Anyway, sorry I haven’t posted much in the previous thread. I wasn’t feeling too good yesterday, and this morning, I’m still under the weather. Obviously, not enough to avoid my online ritual.
But, it will probably be a while before I post again today, since I want to take advantage of my day off from work to rest up and get better.
Oh yeah, Happy Halloween everyone! No sweets for me.
Oh how I love this pix! He is glowing in this one. He’s becoming comfortable in his journey of becoming a star.
DMA-to quote you from the previous thread: “His voice just reaches inside and unlocks pain and heartache.” Simply perfect. YES, YES, YES. Thanks!
HG-perhaps no sweets, but listen to David, that should be sweetness enough for your ears
(at least one of your senses will be very happy).
Rascal,
I think it’s because…FINALLY….he can no longer deny to himself that they are there for HIM, to see HIM, and not some other idol. haha!
In his Kiss Cleveland interview he talked about how this time last year if he had been interviewed he would have been saying “eh,eh, um, eh, eh, um….” and that he is getting better at interviewing. He said during several radio interviews these past weeks that he is “rambling” which I love because it is just an unedited stream of his thoughts which as one DJ said was “bubbles” of happiness coming out of him.
I remind myself to savor this time because as he matures (which is happening now in quantum leaps) he will retain his genuineness and authenticity but the rambling will become sentences and the questions will become routine for him.
Then, I will have another phase of his journey to enjoy.
I am just checking in quickly so I am not sure if this has been posted already – sorry if it has, but it is so good – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaZfpXKiGZM
HG – hope this helps you feel better today.
Snippets have emerged….snarkies has the link..
I’ve listened to 2 songs – be very prepared to be very happy.
OMGGGGGGGGGGG run!!
http://www.7digital.com/artists/david-archuleta/david-archuleta/
the songs are amazing!! you can hear them all!
Chills. Seriously!
His head is up, he is walking with confidence, and he is glowing.
With his musical knowledge, kind soul, and good aura he has won over all of the DJ’s who have interviewed him. Next to be bowled over are all of the talk show hosts. And they will fall in love.
Desperate is in the process of slaying me.
Josie… what about YOU CAN…?? he is playing guitar… and he says if anyone can make me fall in love YOU CAN…
omgggg I am DEAD!
I was also struck by this very image when it emerged a couple days ago. He appears calm amidst an absolute whirlwind, and there is a sense of confidence and purpose on his face.
snippets… thudding continues…
http://www.7digital.com/artists/david-archuleta/david-archuleta/
TO BE WITH YOU…
have died and gone to heaven…
E – haven’t heard it yet…*runs to listen* (and trips and falls along the way!)
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jackryan – I posted the same link in post # 8
OK. I SERIOUSLY MUST CALM DOWN HERE. I’m all over the map – must listen in proper order as of right this minute.
GAH! *THUD* is an understatement.
Love “You Can!!!!” Maybe this is the organic direction he may end up going?
I’m curious; if these are the final mixes, does his voice sound as overpowered in “Angels?”
ALTNOY is the second verse
Check out EW online for info on his liner notes. This line from the article is hilarious!
…extensive liner notes, which clock in at just over 3,500 words (2,000 of which are his Thank You’s) and include 6 lol’s, 8 haha’s, and 16 exclamation points….Not to harsh on Archie, but we’re barely skimming the surface here. He goes on (and on…and on…)
Josie and archiesfan4life, thank you for the well wishes. Evey, ((((HUGS))) and numerous XXXKISSESSXXX – thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! for that fabulous Halloween treat! What a pleasant (and, yes, very SWEET) surprise! I’m starting to feel better already.
What’s that SF said? David The Healer? *swoons.*
That said, I love, LOVE the ballad “To Be With You” (but I’m a bit miffed that we didn’t get another ballad, and no, as far as I’m concerned, “Angels” doesn’t count since we’ve heard that one before).
I’m also loving “Running,” “Desperate,” and “Your Eyes Don’t Lie.” Of course, I already liked “ALTNOY” and “Touch My Hand.”
I now want either “Running” or “Desperate” to be the second single.
But I guess with all albums, there has to be one lemon, and that has to be “Barriers.” What an unbelievably over-processed HOT MESS! Jesus!
Good news: most of the tracks are awesome!
Desperate is amazing – who knew he’d be such a great popROCK balladeer? (besides us)
I can’t pick which one I would want as another single…I love them all for different reasons…
Your Eyes Don’t Lie has a great beat and makes you move
You Can makes me cry it is so beautiful with the guitar and just his voice
Desperate is haunting! ALTNOY is catchy..ahhhhh
and wait till we hear the other 4 songs from Itunes/Walmart…. OMG.. we may not make it!
Guh….Seriously, I couldn’t be happier. Love how eclectic it is!
Rock out Big D!!!
How on earth is the label gonna pick the next single from all those hits! LOL It’s not gonna be Angels because that’s a cover and it was released on Itunes as a teaser so hmmmmmm? which one?
To Be With You is the one with Kara from Idol.. She sounds fantastic..and that song gives me chills!
As I was listening to the snippets a little while ago, I kept thinking this is his “Breakaway”. That cd was a monster. Hit after hit, and some that weren’t radio hits should have been. This cd has that air. It’s cohesive, the vocals are amazing, and it doesn’t pigeonhole him as solely a balladeer. I believe that some of the bonus tracks will be the ballad some crave. I don’t have a favorite, although I think You Can is certainly a seductive song.
David has really come into his own during this radio tour. I think he was beginning to hit his stride at the meet n greets, and fan meetings during the tour. The way he worked the crowd with so much charm and sweetness was so fun to watch. I think that he is beginning to understand his power, and that some of the things he thought were weaknesses have been working to his advantage. I hope he never becomes so practiced and studied in his interactions as it is one of the things that is endearing about him.
I think he is feeling a sense of accomplishment and that is giving him that extra aura of power. The cool thing with David is that the power is based on a solid work ethic and not some sense that he is entitled to something because of his innate awesomeness. He knows he is where he is at this moment because of his hard work, and the sacrifices of others (his family).
His liner notes are totally David (quintessentially David), I wrote @ mj’s earlier today
His notes to his Mom and Dad are so sweet and loving. I adore this kid.
HG, feel better!
Love the more mature lyrical themes on these songs. He may not have experienced some of the emotions but he makes you believe he has.
Oh David, you are such a shining star!
Oh you guys…..I’ve melted all over the floor.
And that picture – David growing into this new life of his…. It puts me in mind of the recent Q & A with Seton High, when he says he will be searching for the perfect girl for him, then looks pointedly into the audience and says that maybe she is, “here…somewhere.” I laughed, and then i didn’t. Who is this boy?? And then the moment in the radio station when he surprised the girl and she jumped away from him and he went after her, “C’mere!” to hug her and then once he got ahold of her he cuddled her so sweetly. So self-possesed. So sweet. Still David but growing into himself, growing into being a man. It’s like those time-lapse photographs of flowers unfolding before your eyes.
ugh. I’m rambling. I’m so emotional! These songs are pushing me over the edge. I’m almost relieved that I’m not crazy about Barriers because I love the others so completely. Will I ever be able to listen to anyone else again??
I forgot I wanted to add this – his note to his mom:
Mom: You raised me to be who I am and have taught me so many things. When things get frustrating, you’re there to try and lighten things up. I’ve looked up to you for being very understanding, and trying to keep things peaceful. Even though I’m pretty sure I get my communication skills from you and we’re both bad with words (haha), you’re sensitive to people’s emotions. Thanks for letting me do this.
tears, tears, tears…..
smanda: “…like those time-lapse photographs…unfolding before your eyes.”
Yes, Oh, Yes and how lucky are we to behold such beauty!
AHHHHHHHHHH! Just listened to the snippets. Tried to write down my faves based on first impressions… too many possible hits here to narrow it down!!!!!!!!! So much for “working” at home today…
Rascal, we need you!
smanda #33: just ditto *wiping eyes while goes off to sob*
from your post smanda on #34
“… thank you for letting me do this…”
as Randy J would say — THAT’S the David that we love… This boy’s the one to beat!
is there a thing as a sniff of joy?
Can’t even process this… it’s just too much. This journey he has taken us on is sooo exciting. World Archu-domination is just about here…
I am sure I will not be able to choose a favorite. Right now, Desperate and Running stand out for me, but, after I listen to these snippets a couple of hundred times it will be mood driven… I will love all of his songs, and it will depend on the mood I’m in as to which one I have to hear.
Excuse me while I go off now to immerse myself some more.
As with the birth of my 2 children…I feel like I am finally holding something very precious in my arms that I’ve been waiting for…longing for. Finally. Sweetly.
I have no idea which will be my favorites, but there is not one I dislike. And that would still be one I would love, because it’s David. I could care less about production and all that technical stuff…I care about David’s voice and his perception of a song and my interpretation of the song.
I’m very happy today.
….and these ARE just snippets! You can just sense there are some “blow you away” moments coming in each of these songs beyond these snippets! These are just priming the pump!
I’m feeling like a gagillion emotions right now and they are all good!
I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE A HALLOWEEN “DRESS UP PARTY” FOR OUR AVATARS TODAY!
Brooklyndawn, I am feeling better!
It’s amazing what a bunch a snippets of songs will do for your soul. Whatever will the complete versions do to me? Or to any of us?
smanda and Kizzi: *wiping eyes while goes off to sob*
Awwwww. I’m feeling you!
OK, I vote for “Desperate” to be the second single. It’s got that edgy, angsty feel to it, which would be a nice contrast to the feel-good pop of “Crush.”
His third single should then be a ballad (my vote goes to “To Be With You.”)
The good thing is, regardless, a number of these songs are potential hits.
Way to go, David!
Hi
he’s sooo confident now…god bless him..Brooklyndawn #(30) are you from Brookllyn if so nice to know someone from Brooklyn love David..email me ffrancisny@hotmail.com
TOfan – Thanks for your interest in my thoughts, but I won’t be rendering any opinions until the entire tracks are available.
fay — don’t know if you realize, but this a Brooklyn-based blog!
Brooklyndawn what notes to his mom and dad where can I read it…please let me know
oh sorry Rascal I did’nt know oh wow even better thanks for letting me know……..awesome
Josie……….I absolutely totally agree with you…well said
rascal- LOVE the pic at top..when I fist saw it a fewdays ago on another site my first reaction was..The KING has just entered the building…But after hearing the new snippets of his songs and reading his liner notes..especially to Mom and Dad.(OMG.sob..sob.!) my reaction is a more mature WOW..just LOOK at the guy!!!..You nailed it with “there is a dimension of confidence in this image of him that is unmistakable.” it brought tears to my eyes..”He even appears to be the calm strength in the middle of the chaos.” is so very David and is exactly what draws us to him…All my excitement about what his CD will bring to ME has turned in the last few days(since hearing the full ANGELS) to just how proud and excited I am for DAVID and what dreams are coming true for this amazing young man…He is truly a gift to all of us and I would like to thank Jeff and Lupe for sharing him with the world.
There are sure to be many “hits” on this CD for so many reasons and this is just another example of how David has the ability to reach out and touch so many hearts of all ages…way to go David.!!..you give new meaning to the word SOAR!!! ….Hold on and enjoy the ride, it is sure to be a long beautiful ride into the stratosphere…God Bless You!!!
and”
sorry -omit the…. and” ..???
And to think – 17 songs await us – granted, we’ve heard 2 in their entirety, but still – that leave 15 to hear. My heart’s so full I can’t explain.
Josie… my sentiments exactly… what a happy day. I am so glad for the snippets, otherwise I really think 11/11 would be a little too much for me!
I’ll be listening to these allll day
So far I’m loving Desparate>>>You can….
Rascal, bet you’re dying to though….
You know what’s killing me now laughing… can u imagine the looooonnngg & numerous thread this CD will spawn all across ArchuPlanet?
I mean we analyze to death even the lightest of subjects about this man-child, now we have 17 songs to consider, cross-reference, go cra-zeh & thud over & over again…
Snippets of observations: Taken as a medley & taking out Crush & Angels from the selection), TMH suddenly stands out… Barriers – very interesting; To be With You is hands down a knock-out; Desperate could be a good follow-up single to further expand his base.. You Can will melt all those Seton ladies all over again, oh boy
10 more days before we can savor the full tracks – gaaaahhhhh!.
“if anyone can make me fall in love…YOU CAN”….OMG David..I.can hardly handle it….does he not know by now when he sings these things what is does to us!!!….Oh Boy..11/11 should be the next National Holiday..not too much work will be done that day …all David all day !!!!
PEOPLE IN ARCHULETALAND…JUST LISTEN TO “YOU CAN” THIS IS GOING TO BE A MEGA HIT………omg I HAVE A MILLION EMOTIONS…………RIGHT NOW OMG THIS BOY IS OH LORD I DO NOT KNOW WHAT WORDS TO DISCRIBE HOW I FEEL RIGHT NOW
fay #56…..hear you loud and clear!!!! you are not alone..You Can is something special…Can’t wait to hear the full version…Truly..there are no words that can fully describe this young man…
TOfan – #53 – I’m dying to hear the entire tracks.
So, for the moment David is just a track tease
“muttering puddle of goo” *goes off to mutter some more
As if I couldn’t love David Archuleta any more … those liner notes?!!!!! I’m such a geek for liner notes and his are just so… David. Gah. Cannot type right now, sorry.
..a track tease…..haha ..how true…very funny rascal !!
“Track tease” – Rascal, you slay me.
just realized..11/11 is a National Holiday…Veterans Day….nice choice for a release day…JIVE knew that no work would be done on the day of David’s CD release..
AHHHHHHHH, do we have a new KING today or what??? so far, for me, it’s Barriers………………going back for tons more listens.
Too much to process, and I gotta run!
Just want to say that there’s reason to rejoice because it sounds like they don’t mess with David’s voice on the acoustic songs. Yay for pure, organic David Voice!
This is so diverse. I can’t really process it all.
How’s that for prolific?
Guys, I need some help coming up with an excuse as to why I’m missing my deadline today:
I’m Desperate-ly sick?
My computer isn’t Running?
The dog ate My Hands?
you are missing it because….YOU CAN !!
ronaldsf..betta stock up on the paddles….
OMG!! This is killing me – I’m at work and really can’t listen to these snippets. HELP!! I’m not going to make it till later – plus I’m going somewhere after work today. I may have to cancel..LOL!
TOfan ROTFL… I’ m still sitting here Archustupified!
rascal #58 I’m with you. I too will wait for the full length versions.
“track tease” ? lol
ninaf, right there with you. I’m at work and I can’t listen to the songs….help! Most of the day I just have to be a lurker, ugh…and live through everyone else on this site. It’s okay, I have my American Idol CD on my desk so I can listen to our boys beautiful voice!!!
Helloooo everyone..
A HA! Just as I thought..I TRIED to WARN you all…
David is taking us to a place we’ve NEVER been before!
I haven’t heard any of the songs yet cuz I’m at work, but
I’m very apprehensive about listening..I don’t if my heart can take it just from all your comments. I’m going to have to PREPARE myself, BUT HOW..how do you prepare for a trip to the outer limits of space & beyond?? And this is JUST his music.when he begins ACTING, which is surely in his future, how will we ever survive?
TOfan #67 LOL
Silverfoxe #74–consider yourself warned….settle in for a glorious ride and gorious it is…a seatbelt might be in order for this ride..make that mandatory…
I’ll take this treat on Halloween or Chocolate any day!!!
Silverfoxe–when it comes to that seatbelet–you better “JUST HOLD ON”
Silverfoxe, you knew this day would come. Well, we’re halfway there! (These snippets are more like launching you to the moon – I’m sure the full album will rocket us “beyond the infinite”).
GAH! I’m listening to the snippets on a loop! And I keep changing my mind about which should be the next single – “Desperate,” “Running,” “ALTNOY,” “Your Eyes Don’t Lie,” “You Can,” “To Be With You,” any of these are worthy candidates. Any of these singles would launch David into the stratosphere.
I absolutely cannot wait to hear the full versions! Sigh.
rascal, the photo you chose does depict a more confident David..but to me it looks as if he’s telling us
we ain’t seen nothin’ yet!! And yes..he actually “shines” in that photo! Beautiful!
OKAAAY! I am like, so excited. Here’s my take on the album snippets.
In order from best to worst.
The FANTABULOUS (single material)
1. To Be With You- I LOVE the harmony- this song is LOVE
2. ALTNOY- it MUST be the 2nd single!
3. Crush- i love my chris brown lite
4. Desperate- whiny power ballad- i love those!
The GREAT
5. You Can- great vocal song
6. My Hands- catchy melody
7. Running- rhythmic and head-boppy
The GOOD
8. Touch My Hands- nice album fodder
9. Your Eyes Don’t Lie- very cute and bubblegum
10. Don’t Let Go- I wanna love it, but i just like it
The OK
11. Angels- the chorus is grating, but the vocal is pretty.
12. Barriers- it’s cute, but the yelling parts are… not.
Of course, my opinions will probably change when I hear the full songs. I like what I’m hearing- the album is proving to not be happy and bubblegumish (which I really don’t mind), but the whiny, heavy-hearted kind of thing- kind of like the Backstreet Boys (Best. Boyband. Ever). And i LOVE whiny albums. I eat that stuff up, so… I can’t wait!
geez ….I cannot function while listening to the snippets…
I will take this treat on Halloween OVER chocolate anyday…
…and if you knew me.. that is quite a statement…!!!.
OK,.. That does it!! I’m going home..I can’t wait any longer..
But djasgirl..eek! I wouldn’t compare anything David does to the BSB’s..they drive him NUTS! haha!
If ya’ll don’t hear from me in a couple of hours..watch the obits in the Ky newspapers!!
Later!
djasgirl, there may be consensus here (except I would rank “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” a little higher).
Here’s my own ranking of the snippets (excluding “Crush”), from Best to Worst (or in this case, as djasgirl wrote, “The OK”):
1. Desperate (I love me some whining too!).
2. To Be With You (I equally love me some begging, especially in a love ballad).
3. Running (I love the R&B/soul bass on this).
4. A Little Too Not Over You (I love the opening and the chorus).
5. Angels (because this has a special place in my heart).
6. You Can (David’s most organic sound here! Yay!).
7. Your Eyes Don’t Lie (this has a definite Stevie Wonder vibe to me).
8. Touch My Hand (loving the melody and the chorus in this, especially his lovely falsetto here).
9. My Hands (too generic sounding, but it’s got an interesting melody in the verse).
10. Don’t Let Go (too generic pop rockish for my taste).
11. Barriers (I’m just not feeling the over-processed sound on this: David’s voice really sounds drowned out – and I especially cannot stand that echo thing going on in the chorus. Strangely, alot of people on other forums seem to like this, so this of course is JMHO).
I’m pretty sure the ranking will change once I hear the full songs.
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=372079673&blogID=445281269
David’s new blog at his myspace page. He is sooo happy! And in keeping with rascal’s observation above, he is blogging with much more confidence.
Its amazing that the fans are all over the place on their favorite. Someone’s most favorite is another fan’s least liked. Wonder which one Jive has targeted as the next single? Wonder if we will agree?
Thanks for that link, Kizzi! Cool album snippets and cool blog all in one day! I wasn’t lying when I said this boy is “killing me softly.”
So good to hear he has kept in touch with Alexandrea (that’s the contestant he cried over during Top 20 week).
David is so real, he’s not the type o forget anybody on his journey up.
HG- It’s funny but I initially didn’t like “Barriers” and so I made myself listen to it repeatedly because that has been my experience with another of his songs. Well, there must be some subliminal messages going on in that echo that say “don’t worry, it’s going to be alright” because I like it now. ??Scratching head??
Subliminal messages? Now, you like it, ram? Are you telling me to get pass my “Barriers” and give it another chance? I think I’ll wait until I hear the full version.
Gosh, looking at the Atlanta photos David shared, it looks like he’s just as tall as Alexandrea now, if not a little taller (during Top 20 week, when they were hugging their goodbyes, I could’ve sworn Alex towered over him – maybe she was wearing heels?).
Or maybe, *sniff*, our boy is growing up!
#6 – archiesfan4life – GREAT fan vid, thanks for posting! HG – “the Archustrut” at :41 ! ! ! !
iTunes, grrrrr, I got charged for the automatic Angels download (from album pre-order). If it was ANY other artist, I would complain. I just hope it counts (again) toward his singles #s!
rascal, re: your post today, you never cease to amaze me for seeing and saying out loud things that I only dimly notice—like this—that’s exactly what I saw when I looked through the station’s pics, but it didn’t register in any part of my brain that could have commented on it!
Thanks, and ever more thanks for these rascalicious chronicles.
“the Archustrut” at :41 ! ! ! !”
Highervibe, is that what we’re calling it?
To Die For!!!!!!!!!!!
THUD.
guh
Hey beebs you ok? I’ve never seen post a one word comment!!
I think upon hearing the full versions, my feelings will probably change. His voice is mesmerizing and hypnotising me – going back to listen some more.
define “ok” :p (this is blowing me away. I fear for myself come 11/11)
did I say *THUD!* ?
It’s pretty powerful isn’t it Beebs? I think this album will be amazing…
*thud* rightbackatcha.
♥
I listened to the snippets on very low volume, but I’m stuck at work for a few more hours. Can’t wait to cut out of there and really listen.
does anyone know if David is aware that all these snippets have leaked?? would he be ok with it??
Processing all this is dang near impossible. Each one is killing me (softly… HG
) It… it… it…hurtssogood
#97 beebee – best comment yet “It hurts so good.”
Another one that I loved: “the ones I liked the least, I loved; the ones I like the most, I need an analyst.”
Ah, life is so very gooooooddd!
To Be With You is now tied with Barriers, it’s a really pretty song. Hi Josie! it’s so good to see you back here and hope you’re feeling better today. How could you not be with all this gloriousness!!! What a day!!
Hi Erin, so sorry you can’t listen yet. Counting down the hours with you!!
Chickee-I got my Archu-shot and feel sooo much better.
And I really believed that having these snippets would satiate my Archu-tite, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I am quenching for the whole kitandkaboodle. Gosh, I am so needy.
I’m listening in album order (i.e., iTunes list order). I’m tellin’ y’all… imo… as a body… as an album… (debut album, people!) this baby is frickin’ frackin’ smokin’. Suh..M..O..K..I..N’!! What will become of me with the bonuses? :::quaking in “lil booties”:::: )
And I try to put myself in the shoes of those who, to date, are/were still clueless… how pleasantly
surprisedblown away they’ll be.*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*thud*
picture this….David in LA doin his thang with his Band..in his own “heaven”…totally unaware of the pandomonium that is going on around the country with all these snippets!!!!..our “heaven”
first 108 seconds of Archufun..great video..sooo David -the kid..
and now all these “tease tracks” …soo David the STAR….what an effect he has!!!!
djb-I must say I really love the David 108. Never have I enjoyed watching someone try to formulate words before
Josie/#103—his hand motions are.well..priceless!!!
Oh my, I am so excited with all the news here today, but before I catch up I want to let you know what I found out when I went to the Walmart Supercenter store regarding whether the CD in the stores would have the Bonus Track like the one online does.
I made a trip there so I could speak with a human being since I had no luck with their email Help Dept. – I received an email back saying they had to “research the matter”!!!
I spoke with the Dept. Manager of Electronics and I am so very puzzled by what he told me. He first looked in a booklet he had and David’s CD wasn’t listed??? THEN he checked on the computer and he informed me that it was only available as an online promotion and would NOT be sold in any of their stores??????? At first, he told me I could order it online and have it shipped to the store and it would be there for me to pick up on Nov. 11th, but after checking his computer, he said I couldn’t even do that with this CD!!!!
I am not very trusting of Walmart in general, but I probably annoyed this fellow because I kept asking him to be certain since I was going to be letting all my online friends know about this and he said he was sure his information was correct.
Why would David’s CD not be stocked in the Walmart stores? Maybe he is wrong, but he was pretty adamant about what he told me.
Now – I am off to catch up – and order my CDs online:)
lol… Josie, I know… the 108 is such a wonderful little “show”. I still dream of the “Let’s Just Follow David Archuleta Around With A Video Camera” Show. (Which we’ve practically HAD with this promo tour…)
djb Ever since I heard he got a band together… and then that they’re smokin’ and David is STOKED… all I can do is *swoon* at the very thought of it. And nevermind how excited I am… David just must be beside himself to have a band that fits him like a glove… and it HIS… ALL HIS!!
Dang it, I have work to do. I am in such big trouble.
Beebeecava – do your work. Don’t worry-David and his music will most def be around for a very, very long time.
♥
He’s got a solid album!
I love Barriers.
I’m intrigued by To Be With You.
Still love Crush.
Still dying to listen to the full My Hands.
*goes back to listening mode*
dang… archiesfan4life that’s confusing and discouraging. :/ I guess I’ll hold off ordering until something more reassuring surfaces about what’s what with Walmart.
lol…good point, mama Josie. (and I could literally see your finger waggin’ there… what with you calling me by my full name…lmao!) {{hug}}
And on that note…I have GOT to scram! *poof*
Oh MY… “Desperate” I am unable to breathe………
they are all so good, different… wow…
the texture of his voice… I am stunned it is so beautiful….his voice can do anything !!!!!!!
did I say “Desperate”…..I can’t think straight…and it was just 15 seconds ? !
I need to listen again to them all… they are so good… but I think I stopped processing things after “Desperate”… rock ballad… David .. you are too much !..
Hi Chickee, just waiting to get off work, another 1 1/2 hours..EEEKKK….I can’t wait, those trick or treat r’s are going to have to hear David’s music tonight!
ojs-HI! I’m with you on Desperate…cannot wait to hear the full version of that one. It’s hauntingly gorgeous.
beebs-good girl
you get an extra bazillion listens of the snippets…xo ♥
Hi Josie— yes I too am very excited for the whole “Desperate” …. I am hoping my heart can take it !! LOL !
I am going to have to wait to re-listen. ( DANG!)….. I must now get busy dressing of my trick or treaters !!!
whoops no OF….
Josie-!!-hauntingly gorgeous.!!!….that’s our David…haha
Rascal, your posting is perfect. He stands out-there is a glow about him and all else fades away. I love watching him grow and mature right in front of our eyes.
Its been a busy day so had little chance to listen to the snippets. What I did realize though was how smart Jive was to “leak” songs to us earlier. As I was listening to the songs I was almost overwhelmed-too much to take in-so much talent. Then I heard a familiar song and it was oh I know that one. It was almost comforting which I guess is a strange way of putting it but how I felt. Other than Angels and Crush I have not even heard all of the other songs. I want to hear them all and savor them but maybe I had better just adjust to the snippets so I can actually survive 11/11.
I just found this on one of the comments at FOD – all the snippets together.
http://archieangels.blogspot.com/2008/10/prvia-do-cd-de-david-archuleta.html
highervibe #88 – I spoke with an iTunes customer service rep and was told that the charge we were billed for Angels will be deducted from the cost of the album when we receive it on Nov. 11th.
If not yet posted, this may interest you…
McCain to play David on SNL?
“John McCain will appear on SNL tomorrow, playing what we hear is his uncannily dead-on impression of David Archuleta in a planned sketch with musical guest David Cook.”
(Source: Snarky)
archiesfan4life..that link was from Brazil’s Archangels. He has Angels all around the world!
jackryan..THAT should be interesting if true!! We should be able to “read” between the comedy lines. I don’t think I like the premise of David maybe being made fun of…especially since even to this day, David still thinks the world of Cook. I know SNL is all in fun, but all I gotta say is they better not DISS’ our David!
Now my take on the song snippets…
I’m loving DESPERATE, RUNNING, & ATNOY and are my pick for David’s next single, however, I also love YOUR EYES DON’T LIE and TO BE WITH YOU..And I love YOU CAN, HANDS, TOUCH MY HANDS,and DON’T LET GO too! Dang! It’s really hard to figure out which one will be the next single! The only one I didn’t like too much
was BARRIERS which would be so much better without the yells, so I agree with djasgirl, but maybe the complete track will surprise. The Songs I’m really anxious to hear is FALLING cuz it’s all by David, music & lyrics, and WORKS FOR ME cuz David said it was the “heaviest” song on the album! Now gotta go back & listen some more..What a DAY!! David just keeps GIVING & GIVING! This album will be the start of David getting some PAYBACK!
His eyes tell a story and he IS ALWAYS HAPPY! I LOVE this picture, and agree with you rascal, David the Star is emerging. *sighs* and just think it will soon be A WHOLE YEAR when we all first laid eyes on him during Idol auditions. Speaking of Idol….is anybody planning to watch? I will bet the two Davids will make an appearance together later during the season. I don’t want to miss that.
Oh speaking of those leaks…I’m planning to WAIT for the official release. It’s only 11 days.
silverfoxe– Me too, Me too…Desperate and Running—- I just LOVE them—
I can not wait for the full versions ! I really am enjoying all the snippets …
FE you are strong- good for you!!! It will definitely be worth the wait !!!
oh, doorbell…must run…candy seekers!
silver may i have your email addy? email it to me at ditasy@gmail.com
just reading over the thread waiting for the kids and my hubby to arrive home from trick or treating
smanda— I LOVE your post #32. I just love every word…
jackryan, It’s on it’s way.
#88 highervibe – The Angels that downloaded when you ordered the album ONLY counts towards the individual sale of Angels until you pay for the rest of the album. When you complete the album that particular download of Angels will revert to an album sale and take away a sale from the individual sales. You have to download the song as a single song for it to count permanently towards the song only sales.
Cook’s single song sales last week (when the album went on preorder and the single downloaded) were around 33,000. That figure is probably close to the total of preorders for the album for that week.
What bothers me is that Cook’s album went to #1 pop, #2 overall in 1 day and stayed there for 5 days, did not go to # 9 until the 7th day. David’s album went to #6 for a short time and has mostly been at 7-8 and now 9 on it’s 4th day. And, according to some other post, Cook’s album has outsold David’s album on Amazon by quite a bit.
AM I THE ONLY ONE WORRIED?
I realize that the competition is over and I don’t want to compare, BUT, everyone in the business will be comparing.
I notice that some are canceling pre-orders – I say think about stocking stuffers, office presents, and any gift giving occasion to buy an extra copy.
Remember, David did not pack a coat so as to avoid the $50 dollar fee for extra luggage.
Finally, I got to listen! Wow, he’s such a track teaser! I can’t wait for the full songs
rena – In this game, it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish. These are only pre-sales. No one in the industry puts any stock in pre-sales of a new artist. It will be months before total sales shake out, and before any kind of assessment can be made. But more important, it matters very little where DA winds up against DC. DC is no more consequential from a comparison standpoint than any other artist with an album release in the market during the same time period.
Jackryan, that McCain/SNL story was supposed to be a complete fabrication. I think it was one of those “spoof” stories.
SF, looks like we had the same reaction to the same songs! There looks to be consensus, at least on Noting David.
Rena, I’m going to agree with Rascal here. We really shouldn’t be that caught up in sales comparisons. And, honestly, now that I’ve gotten a taste of the song snippets, my main questions are less about how commercially viable David will be and more curious about the critical acclaim.
I’m more inclined to ask if, next year, at this point, will any of his songs be nominated for a Grammy? Which song will he get nominated for Best Male Vocalist? Will he get a Best New Artist nomination? That sort of thing. As someone who has already said he’s “in it for the music, not the money,” David has put things in perspective for me, as I realize I have stopped stressing over how well David will sell.
Granted, I’m pretty confident he will sell just fine. If he doesn’t sell as much as Cook, I doubt Jive is going to be wringing their hands over this. The way they’ve set David up (bonus tracks, his own band, possible solo tour), this album is not a one-time deal. They’ve got a long-term contract in place, I’m sure of it.
Cook is a totally different artist than our David. Archuleta is at a whole other level.
I like to hear these reassuring words but if they are true, then why does David keep saying “If” there is second album. I tend to think that Jive has funded the album, the promotions and I assume all expenses because they are expecting the album to sell well. As others have posted, David does not see a penny until Jive has recovered their expenses out of David’s 15% of the total sales income.
I guess I am also concerned since I have read a number of former idols had contracts cancelled after only 1 album. I would feel lighter if I knew why 19 opted to not sign David. I am also puzzled that David and his father thought there weren’t enough good songs 2 weeks before album deadline. Did Jive drop the ball there?
By the way – my favs are Barriers #1 – To Be With You #2 – Desperate #3
HG..I gotta go back and read everone’s posts to see how my picks compare to everyone else’s.
I didn’t know, nor did I WANT to know how Cook’s album & singles have done..I just don’t care..All I care about is David and doing what I can to do my part as a fan. OK, an extreme, supremely silly, sometimes freaky fan, but we all are, aren’t we? It made me very sad that David didn’t pack a coat due to the extra cost?? Is that true?..It couldn’t be true, could it? I think most of us realize the $ isn’t rolling in for David yet, and even though he’s not in it for $, I hope he starts reaping the monetary rewards as well as the critical aclaim for all his hard work very soon. I just appreciate him so much!
Oh Rena..Not a happy poster, you are!! Holloween is not a good nite to be so GLOOMY with a GLOOMY forecast! David says things like that cuz he’s humble and doesn’t take anything for granted!
Rena,
We all know David is uber-humble and THAT is why he says IF there is another album. Please stop fretting and sit back and enjoy the ride that is David Archuleta. It’s more than obvious that this album, although hurried, is remarkable. It will gain him new fans and we will be happy.
Try to appreciate David for David. Not in correlation to any other artist, especially Cook. AI is over and David’s beginning his next journey. He’s going to be fine, in fact, I’ll bet he’s going to be more than fine.
Peace.
Josie/135–I agree 100%–AI is over and David’s amazing journey-a dream come true for him- has just begun!
Ditto what SF and Josie said. David never ever takes things for granted. But it’s just not the way Jive works; they’re not like RCA and other labels that do drop runner-ups at the drop of a hat.
As for 19 not signing him, that’s a good thing.
Jive signed David quickly, but they play the game “slow and steady.”
As we always say here: Trust the Archulator!
silverfoxe/134-the coat issue-can’t possible be true..
I know from experience most teenagers(especially 17 yr.old boys) these days just don’t wear coats…in fact alot wear shorts and sweatshirts all winter..it is a guy thing…David is in and out of limo’s/auto’s and into bldgs all day and probably does not feel the need for one…I can’t believe it is a $ /airline issue….It is just one less thing to keep track of…again teenager thing..
I guess I am a bit gloomy especially today.
Over the span of several years several things happened that I began to suspect that the numbers 1 and 11 would somehow be very eventful in my life. I did not know if it would be a happy or horrible event. Halloween night, 2 years ago, was the last time I saw my mom alive. The morning of 11/1 turned out to be horrible – I found her in bed.
The album comes out 11/11.
One more thing I would like to say (so as to ease Rena’s anxieties, I hope). I honestly don’t think David should be compared to other runner-ups, especially since the track record shows that they are not usually successful.
Season 1 runner-up: Justin Guarini. He was never taken seriously as an Idol contestant talent-wise, let alone as a music artist. David does not have that problem since even his haters acknowledge his talent.
Season 2 runner-up: Clay Aiken. He has been the most successful runner-up to date, but that’s due to the rabid fanbase that was the Claymates, and they had something to prove (that he really did win his year since many wanted to dispute the votes). However, I think a key difference between Claymates and ArchAngels is that we are no longer invested in the show and in proving that David was the rightful winner (not when the show insists he lost by 12 million votes). And, although some Archies are still invested in the competition, it does seem that the majority have moved on, and, better yet, David has impacted on non-Idol watchers since “Crush” has done tremendously well beyond the Idol bubble and beyond his Original Archies fanbase.
Season 3 runner-up: Diana DeGarmo. There was a concerted effort to not support Diana, precisely because, the year before, the runner-up had outsold the winner. It was very clear that 19 heavily promoted Fantasia while downplaying Diana, hence why the runner-up flopped (not to mention her album was mediocre). Just from the snippets we’ve heard, I think we can safely predict that David’s album won’t be viewed as mediocre. As long as the music is good, it will sell and it will impact.
Season 4 and 5 runner-ups: Bo Bice and Katherine McPhee had a lot of potential, but they had tremendous conflict with their labels, not to mention their albums just weren’t very good. Again, David won’t have this problem, and whatever conflicts he may have had, I think David is more than capable of compromising. Plus, he’s young enough to learn and grow.
Season 6 runner-up: Blake Lewis – sold pretty decently for a new artist, IMO, but his label Arista was not impressed, and his “diva” attitude so early on in his career led to a lot of bridges being burned down very quickly. David clearly does not have an attitude problem to be burning any bridges.
All this is to say: I think David is positioned very well to be extremely successful. He’s got the talent, he’s got the looks, the youth, the energy, he’s got the right attitude, and he’s signed to a label and management that, so far, are not using his Idol beginnings as some sort of crutch to promote him.
I think he’ll be fine. And he’s with a label that has the experience and savvy to market and help “grow” their young talents into serious artists by the time they reach adulthood. I do believe Jive sees David as a long-term investment and not some quick buck to cash in on while he’s in the public limelight.
Rena, I’m sorry to hear about these horrible events, but keep the hope!
Dear silverfoxe and djb -
you can find the coat $50 dollar story on Fansofdavid.com under Carla’s story write up about meeting David at the Boo Bash. It is under the Can’t Let the Music Stop video. I tend to not repeat things that I feel are not from a reliable source, since I am not only gloomy but also skeptical.
Erin4David!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, and OH MY, you got a new avatar! This is the one you sent me! Love it Love it!! Well……….you might still be busy with trick or treaters…………but did you get a chance to get a good listen yet? Dying to know which ones you like the most!! Hope you are well…….
Hey I’m just arriving and boy have I missed a ton!! Brought the paddles for all of you…I can see you need them. CLEAR!!
Thought at first no one was here but then noticed you all on the floor! CLEAR!!
Haven’t even gotten to hear the snippets- can’t wait…
Before I went off to listen, I first wanted to thank everyone for their kind words of support. You all touched me in a genuine way. It is yet another example of the uniqueness that is rascals’s “little corner of Archuworld”. I love it here.
Hey Happy and any other New Yorkers here. I just read at FOD that David will be at the Tower Records in Times Square at 7:00PM on 11/11 to personally sign his CD. I believe you need to get there at 8:00AM to purchase a CD and pick up a wristband. Everyone who has a wristband can get their CD signed at 7:00PM. I’m sure it’s necessary to get there early. Is anyone else planning on going to this?
I won’t be able too! Even though New York City is about 3 hours away from me!
That’s a shame HG, I would have loved to meet you there. Well, I’m going to go, even if I have to go alone.
Let me add, before signing off for the night, that all this promotion is fierce! Radio interviews, meet-and-greets, upcoming TV, in-store signings, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, various Jingle Balls, etc etc.
Say it with me now: DAVID WILL BE FINE! MORE THAN FINE!
G’nite all!
loved the song snippets- some more than others…
ninaf- would love to meet you at TS but can’t take off work for the am wristband thing….
goodnight all, I’m sooooo tired……TGIF
rena- I will say a prayer for you.
hello gorgeous
I’m impressed with your knowledge. This was my first season watching idol so I appreciate the update.
rena (((Hugs)))
Rena you are right about the coat story..poor David was so cold, but he was happy. I guess he couldn’t see paying the money on every flight and there were a lot of them on that stretch of promotions. Hope he brings a coat for the PARADE though!! We don’t want him getting sick just before all the Jingle concerts!
Also, (((hugs))) to you! I’m so very sorry about the tragic loss of your Mom. I hope you are finding a measure of peace through David’s music.
It’s time for me to g’nites as well
And as usual to David
Have the sweetest dreams, be safe & secure in our love for you always! CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!
I would truly, dearly love to engage in this delirium of joy, but am busy ‘cus of work so forgive my out of synch responses, ya’ll are riding on a VERY fast train here!! The big picture of what’s going on right now is just a LOT of puzzle pieces on my table right now.
89 – HG, haha, that’s what I’m calling it, and I remember you lovin’ on that, many threads ago!
David’s liner notes “break the word count bank”… ?!! They “…include 6 lol’s, 8 haha’s, and 16 exclamation points…” I am so ROTFL, I just have to excuse myself for a while…. I’ll be baaaaack…………
still catchin’ up….
archiesfan4life – thanks for the info about the angels charge!
jackryan4DA – 119 – oh no, puh-leeese tell me it ain’t so. Major frown mouth on that idea, I am so not likin’ that. You’re kidding, right? I don’t even care if the skit is funny (how could it be? no freakin’ possible way) OMG, nooooooooooo. McCain doing David?—that is the WORST halloween scare I’ve had yet. Maybe ever.
Sorry, gotta go now, I’m ill. I’ll be baaaaaaack…..
Well, I see I’m pulling the night shift here by myself!
OH! I do so hope you are right HG, about that mccain fandango, yeah, that’s gotta be total nonsense. Whew! Spoofed me pretty good!!! OK, I’d better read further before posting….

better? hello? anyone out there?
According to snarkies, teenmag Celebrity Yearbook has David as the centerfold — his 1st megaposter
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-OGkf-zUZYE/SQvpqeDw2SI/AAAAAAAAB2A/oD22ayJHrRU/s800/Photo%209.jpg
rena- 132 – that struck me as odd too, about “not enough good songs” for the album. But when I thought about it further, I figured it’s a matter of not enough good songs *for David*. He is one very unique artist–high ethics would eliminate a *LOT* of songs that most of today’s artists would be just fine putting on the airwaves. I can totally see him not clicking with a LOT of songs which TPTB would have presented to him. But a “high tide lifts all boats”, and he’ll be lifting the music industry up, I’m certain of that. I guess Azoff thinks so too!
OK, goodnight highervibe… oh WAIT! that’s me, uh-oh, talkin’ to myself. Not a good sign. I’ve gotten a bit puddle-headed, listening to those snippets. LOVE. IT. ALL.
Haha, thanks jackryan, that was a very sweet cookie!!! I think I have to give up on trying to catch up with comments, I’m faaaaaaaaaaaadingggg….
nighty-night!
Rena – if I wasn’t so ADD with my ODD, I’d read the comments through in order. What?—you lost your mom? I am so sorry, I almost missed that—and wanted to offer a big ((((hug)))) to you before I totter off to bed. (Still haven’t read your post, but saw that referenced in another.)
Rena am sorry to hear about your mom… big hugs to you; Here you will find other like-minded and similarly-situated archies — you will feel at home (and cra-zeh at times) in a jiffy.

DJ was so impressed with our David that he had to blog on him, too. And he called him a star! Would be nice for archies to drop by and leave some good words for him, waddyathink?
Rascal you have it right. DC is no more consequential than any other artist with an album release. David is now in a much larger arena. For him it is about the music and I rather glad he is not terribly competitive. As long as he sells enough music to be able to afford to make more music-I’m happy.
HG, I too am curious about critical acclaim. I think David is the best thing since mashed potatoes but I want to hear how the music world will embrace him. As I am not a big A1 fan I enjoyed the information about past runnerups.
Silverfoxe, we are on the same page about DC. Because I like him as a person I occasionally think I should check out how he is doing but never enough to actually take the time to do it. I do wish him well.
Highervibe, ” a high tide lifts all boats” What a lovely way to express what David is going to do to the music industry.
Rena, our mothers are so dear to us and although time does help heal the pain, there are times I do so miss my own. Bless you!!!
Good Mornin All! The snippets are pretty good. Cannot wait for the album to drop. Have to say My Hands is my fav for now.
Is it just me but I think our David has put on a little weight since the tour ended?
Jackryan # 158 Looks like someone else thinks my avatar is to die for. That was a difficult article to read (haha) but I managed.
What a face (sigh). And McCain as David would be a major lapse in judgement, look how many people would be ticked off!
Jackryan#157, thanks heaps for the article ~ what magazine is that ~ Popstar?
Adn #158, that’s great! I can’t wait to see him in every magazine! Not my favorite picture (the teen awards), but I’ll take it ~ whatever is David is fine with me! I wish they’d use some of the other great photos and put him in GQ ~ but that’s down the road!
Good Morning Debra! Just want to make it clear I was talking about the yellow plaid shirt picture, not yours! Ha! I LOVE the one in your avatar! And I too have been stressing about the McCain/Archuleta scenario tonight ~ let’s hope it’s not so!
Happy Saturday to all! My hubby is finally home after 2 months in the hospital & Rehab!
happy Saturday all!!
I just happen to run across this new video..It’s sooo good. You have to watch it…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9QwowDKxTg
It’s all about ARCHURAP!!
thank you silverfoxe… I loved the vid. LOL! Great just great!
Good morning…
JAckryan4DA #159—…“has David as the centerfold — his 1st megaposter”????
…What!!?? ….Thud!! ….Quick- get the paddles!!!
I hope he looks better than Burt Reynolds!!! Good thing it’s a “mega poster.”
SF- recite rascal’s rules before you look-“Okay, feast. And behave.” ……..Dang it! ….it’s a teenmag….oh well! ….just trying to get your heart pumping…..
ojs, Yeah..that vid explains David & his beliefs better than anything I’ve read or seen so far and in a very creative way. I hope David sees it, I think he’d really like it cuz it’s so honest. I hope everyone who doesn’t understand where David is coming from sees it too.
Silverfoxe – what a cool video. I am not usually a fan of rap due to the lyrics that seem to accompany most of the rap songs I’ve heard. HOWEVER, I do love the beat and this vid is awesome!
I wonder what David would think of it?
I have some more to say about the album.
From the snippets, the album is not really proving to be a good one. I mean, for a pop album, it would probably get a C- from me- an unbiased review. So we shouldn’t count on this being critically acclaimed. In fact, I think it will be panned- because of the bias against David during the show, and because it’s a pop album. If you go and listen to other pop/R&B albums- notably Chris Brown”s Exclusive and Backstreet Boy’s Unbreakable- this album doesn’t even come close in terms of music and production. All but four of the songs are disposable in my eyes. I don’t expect this album to be nominated for any album awards at the 2010 grammys, simply because i don’t think it’s good enough. He only has a shot at “best male pop vocal performance.”
I mean, I think the album will definitely go gold. That’s all that I think he can accomplish at this point. Maybe he’ll go platinum in a year, but it’s not a sure thing. I think for him to archive this success that everyone here seems to think he’ll achieve, he’s going to need a VERY strong second single. I still believe ALTNOY would be the best choice. Maybe Desperate. To me, none of the others have the potential to be as big as Crush.
That being said, I do like the snippets alot- they’re pretty and catchy. But it doesn’t mean that the general public, the critics, or the academy will like it. I don’t want to seem gloomy or pessimistic, I’m just trying to look at things from an outside perspective. Besides, David didn’t really write the album, so this isn’t really about David. It’s just about what the album is. And to me- that is, a bunch of less than average pop songs being sung by a cutie who can sing. When you look at it that way, the album isn’t really this amazing thing that’s going to blow everyone away.
But what do I know? Maybe we’re looking at the 2nd coming of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
OOPs silverfoxe you answered my question as I was typing. Do you know if the song is an old one or one that was composed for this purpose?
happy…haha! yeah I already saw it and it was close and it took a while but I recovered..I keep smelling salts close by in case I feel a major “THUD” coming on!
Heart..Good news about your hubby..so happy for you!
djasgirl – I appreciate your perspective! Time will tell
David the Diva has a nice ring to it.
djasgirl, how would you know the album will be panned by listening to 30s snippets?
jordin’s album (which i feel is more generic) was not panned (lukewarm review).
awestruck..the rap video is new. You can tell from the photos used to make it. I don’t think it was made to “explain” David..but I think the genius in it is that it answers questions about David and why he is who he is.
djasgirl..what’s great about this blog is that we can agree to disagree…And no, the DAVID ARCHULETA album is certainly NOT the second coming of “Thiller” hahaha! What album comes close to THAT album anyway?
I know David will have his “Thriller” too. No, not this album but I think we can’t get the full impact since the snippets are just that, snippets, so how can we make a final judgement based on listening to a total of what..maybe 8-10 mins worth. And oh my gosh..I wouldn’t WANT DAVID to have a “Thriller” now!! What would we have to look forward to if he were to reach his peak at 18?? No, I look forward to seeing him grow and mature into one of the GREATS! I always look forward to your posts cuz you’re so honest, sometime brutally like rascal..but honestly, we, I, anyway need that honesty even when it stings, to bring us down from the “high” we’re on about David.
djasgirl, I appreciate your honest thoughts! From the brief snippets, I don’t care much for some of the songs, but their style is just not my taste. I adore “You Can” and a few of the others sound promising to me. I have always just loved David’s voice and his interpretation of songs.
I hope for David’s sake that it gets some good reviews from critics. EW is apparently going to review the album in its coming issue and/or online. No matter what happens, we know that David will be able to look back and know that he did everything he could within the limitations of time/label/using others’ materials/production to do his best. My main hope, too, is that the album sells well enough that he can get a second album deal, which he has mentioned, too.
djasgirl-I respectfully disagree about the quality of this album. And isn’t it awesome that everyone has varying opinions, but we still all respect one another?
I’m not really sure how one can determine what is good or not with only 30 seconds of a song to listen to, but it’s a personal opinion and I would never try to change anyone’s mind if they don’t care for it. I only know how I feel about the songs and from what I’ve heard I am coming outta my skin with anticipation for the thing to drop! On me, on my head, in my ears…Just drop already!
My pride for David and what he has accomplished thus far is ginormous and still growing. His ability to weave his vocals into every song’s individuality amazes me. I appreciate each song for what it is and what it brings to me.
I really appreciate being able to voice one’s opinion without getting slammed. That’s just not the way we do it around here.
Peace.
Josie, I agree! I’ve seen on other sites that if a fan raises a criticism of David’s music, or mentions a value that others don’t agree with, they are slammed. It’s great that we can share a diversity of opinions amongst ourselves. Others’ opinions help me to stand back and think about the songs or other topics related to David in a new way.
Oh and one more thought-I am very aware that there are many fans who won’t appreciate the diversity of this album, but for me, it’s most welcome. Since I listen to everything from The Rolling Stones, to Vittorio Grigolo, to Justin Timberlake, to Bob Marley, (I’ll stop here, because the list could go on, but you all get the idea) different genres within an album makes it fun for me to listen to.
The sheer fact that he can pull off this diversity is striking, because as well all know, he is only 17.
djasgirl: I enjoyed reading your comments. Your caution regarding the reception of the album and the rest of the songs compared to Crush is an excellent point. I am very grateful for your objectivity as it allows me to view this experience from another perspective. I have been out of the Pop music world for decades so my perception is based purely on my enjoyment of David’s voice and artistry.
One question: I have been reading in the fan forums and it appear that the pop song snippets are being rated better than the ballads. Can one really get the sense of the whole song from a 30 second snippet (that is less than 1/10th of the total song)?
Hi Kizzi-how are you today? I have stopped reading some of those forums because they seem to be fighting over favorite songs etc…and no, I don’t see how 30 seconds of a song can reach inside your soul and take hold.
In my opinion, there are so many parts to a song from instrumentation, to interpretation, to production (and yes, over production) that in order to “feel” it, you need all the aspects of it.
SF and awestruck, I saw the “Mormon rap” video last night too. The video is new of course, but the song is a few years old and was used in a movie called “Sons of Provo.” It is Mormons making fun of themselves, and there are plenty of inside jokes in the lyrics. I think David would laugh, and laugh a lot.
Can you all tell I have the house to myself today? I’m blah, blah, blahing here all over the place.
Maybe I should be banned… tee hee
djasgirl..another thing..knowing David as we do about his perfectionism..I think he is satisfied with the final result..He is upbeat when he talks about it, no sign of doubt. And Jeff said we would be “blown away” with it..yes he’s his dad, but Jeff is very honest and I think he would have said maybe something more like..”it’s very good”, or “I think you will like it”..something kinda generic like that, but he said we would be “BLOWN AWAY”.. and so far I was blown away by at least 3-4 of the snippets and really loved the others with the exception of only one. So we shall see on the ARCHUWORLD HOLIDAY 11/11!! I hope you keep an open mind and you CHANGE your mind then!
Thanks for the link to the video Silverfoxe. One of the last scenes was “David is greater than all boy bands” which is a SnarkyArchie saying. Did that come from Snarky’s?
SF-I am going to be wearing a tee shirt that says, I am BLOWN AWAY” on 11/11…but that’s just me…crazy ole Josie.
Kizzi – Snarky’s coined the phrase but the music is from a movie about a fictional Mormon boy band called “Everclean”
Hi Josie: Glad you have the day to yourself. I love seeing your avatar and reading your comments when you get the time to post.
When I hear the snippets, I hear parts that I like but it leaves me with wanting to hear the whole song. I agree with the diversity being startling.
As to over production, I am thinking that is part of the pop music production today. I have always loved the voice as the first and foremost instrument and the other instruments in the background. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get David’s voice track and lay in the other instruments as loudly or as softly as we wanted? Too bad there isn’t a video game like that—ahahahaha
Thanks sondra. Loved the song.
Gee, djasgirl, I like your optimism, but I think the expectation that this will be the second coming of “Thriller” is a tad too high. I myself am expecting David’s Thriller album when he’s Michael Jackson’s age (age 25) at the time of that mega-success, or perhaps his album #3 (whichever comes first). I doubt debut albums, especially ones that were done at such a rushed job, will emerge with automatic brilliance.
But, just from the snippets, David seems to be off to a good start.
josie..I LOVE THAT!! Yeah!
I’m sooo OTT and desperate for DESPERATE!! I hope it the next single, but RUNNING is great and of course ALTNOY is awesome!
CRUSH #1..NUMERO UNO!..4th week!! on VH1.. Woo-hoo!!
I agree Kizzi – you know what? In listening to the snippets, I realized I had no clue what the background music sounded like because I was hearing was David’s voice. Someone said there was whistling on one of the songs and I laughed, because I never even heard it.
That confirms that I am clearly having issues….I really need the album today. Now. Right now.
heavyblow/#178——–
“David the Diva” is sooo NOT David….
….he is the REAL DEAL.To me there is no DIVA in David…just my opinion..I..’m thinking(hoping) you meant it in a good way??
And I’m not fixing any of my typos…just sayin’
Oh, Josie, Your Eyes Don’t Lie has the whistling and I missed it too.
IDF has a thread on that song and the comments about the whistling are hiLARious. Some even say it is some type of a musical instrument.
Oh?? Are we supposed to fix typos?? UH-OH!!
GranFan #187 thanks for that info
djasgirl: while i appreciate your opinion, it is just that…yours. point to consider, you ranking the BSB and Chris Brown’s albums as better. That’s really a matter of personal taste. And, I love Chris Brown. But, I don’t know that I would rank his album as so spectacular. I wouldn’t call David’s album (based on the small song snippets) a pop/R&B album. To me it’s straight pop. And so, I wouldn’t even compare it to Chris Brown’s. However as I said, this is all opinion. In my opinion David’s album is pretty good. And much better than a lot of pop albums out now. But really, we have only heard 30 sec of most of the songs, and that’s what 10% of the song? So, I will wait to grade the album until I can listen to it in it’s entirety. Hopefully you will like it better at that time. If not, hopefully you will continue to support David for the incredible singer that he is; that voice is amazing! On that, i’m sure we can agree….
djasgirl – #174 – I am inclined to defer to you on this, even if the consensus may be that your analysis is a little blunt. The fact is, that is how most of the the critics and the market will be — blunt. I am not nearly as aware of the landscape of contemporary music production from a comparative standpoint, but I suspect you are right about putting this up against the likes of Chris Brown or Timberlake or BBB.
However, I also think it is important to recognize that an album made under the ridiculously constrained circumstances that the AI alums are subjected to could never be expected to compare favorably to those benchmark recordings. Will critics take this into account? Maybe a few. Will audiences? No. But David doesn’t need to hit those benchmarks right out of the gate. He just needs to prove his commercial and artistic viability.
Will this album do that? Almost certainly.
David’s fans range in age from 6 to 60 and beyond. We all love David for different reasons and that’s a good thing. He appeals to such a vast fanbase that he will be a very successful artist. One album does NOT make an artist. This is just the tip of the iceberg and I, for one, can’t wait to thoroughly enjoy each and every one of his songs and his albums.
djasgirl-I do hope once all is said and done, that you can actually enjoy David’s album…after all, that’s what it’s all about. Not whether he makes it to #1 or sells a zillion cd’s, but taking in all of his hard work and efforts to make his fans happy and proud.
I’m gonna get in soooo much trouble here but I just HAVE to ask…
rascal are you and djasgirl …ONE and THE SAME person???
Sorry..jus’ askin’ ..cuz, you know???
silverfoxe – #207 – LOL. All I can say is that if I were an 18 year-old girl David wouldn’t have a chance.
rascal-Did you mention earlier that this is a Brooklyn-based blog??..If so you must be aware of the beautiful waters of LI and the Point??..nice to know a neighbor is nearby if this is the case..in any case thanks for creating a site for us all to gather and discuss and enjoy David’s talent..
I guess I should clarify…it’s just that I don’t think you rascal ever really disagree with djasgirl..
I mean “djasgirl” COULD be another alter-ego, kinda like
“rascal” ???
Please don’t ban me from your lovely home or ground me from posting!!
rascal..hon, I buh-lieve you!! hahaha!
silverfoxe- Now that you have heard the snippets..are the paddles nearby or are you going to be OK…??
Hang on until 11/11…YOU CAN do it!!
Thanks for the link to the ARCHURAP…very cute
i think it’s interesting how the critics are being mentioned so much. do any of us really believe that pop music today is great stuff? and that only the critically respected/ praised albums are successful? case in point, jordin’s album received mostly lukewarm reviews while blake lewis got pretty good ones across the board. the critics response was harldy indicative of the end sales results. while i would love David to receive glowing reviews, i am more concerned with his cumulative sales. and public reception. As most of us agree, the album does not need to change the face of music, but rather SELL! and that is what i think it will do.
on that note…..go order your walmart copy!
SF-I think I love you. You had me laughing out loud on that post up there – you’re quite a nugget.
I agree with rascal’s comment. I will be thrilled if David gets a second album deal, because many Idol alums never get that. He has said that he has a strong goal to get a second album in many interviews.
I read that the rumor about McCain imitating David was from a satire website, so likely not true.
djb..this morning, I’ve been looking and swooning over all the latest pics of David..see my avatar?? Isn’t he just getting tooo good-looking for his own good!!
rascal..i’m sure all the girls who THINK they have a chance with David will be forever grateful you AREN’T an 18 year old girl!! hahaha..but I bet you WISH you were, sometimes!! UH-OH..I betta shut my mouth!
Josie, obviously, you & I have the same weird sense of humor! hahaha!
Hm…just my opinion, but the only way David would NOT get another “deal” is if something very drastic ocurred. This kid is tearing up the airwaves and he’s only gotten started.
I should stop eating the leftover halloween candy-feeling a little hyper today.
silverfoxe..swoon indeed..glorious glorious david..beautiful inside and out…heaven sent..thats why he sings of ANGELS so beautifully..it is no coincidence..what a journey he is taking us on..His simply makes my heart swell..It is all good……………
silverfoxe, josie and others, thanks for starting off my day with a laugh!! I love you all!
We are in this wonderful holding pattern – album cover revealed…snippets of songs heard…we are ready…we are ready…we are ready!!!
(I am using dots this morning to honor Brett. He is the ultimate dotdotdot writer. I love that guy.)
And as Brett would say, “Go big D!”
I really can’t even get why there’s even a question about whether David will do another album with or without Jive? That’s cra-zeh! That is unless David himself decides he doesn’t want to pursue a singing career after this album..like he’s gonna become a monk or something…can an LDS become a monk?? And that’s really so cra-zeh, I’m ROTFLMAO at my own statement!!
David will be making album after album..music is in his blood..he has no choice, it’s like breathing to him. So as I said, with or without Jive, he will make a 2nd album and many more!
silverfoxe-
much caffeine this morning?? or is it the pic’s..You are going to hurt yourself and..aahh.. might miss 11/11 !!
you are cra-zeh !! this morning…
I just want to make one thing clear. When I get this album, I’m going to spazz out just like everyone else, and it’ll probably be the soundtrack of my life for a month, just like all the albums by my most beloved artists. And i AM enjoying the songs- they’re very cute, and nice, and all that good stuff.
I’m kind of just trying to be the devil’s advocate. If there were a bunch of comments saying that “this was a good effort considering the circumstances,” then I wouldn’t have made that post. But seeing 80 comments of “sqeeeee!” made me think, “do they really think it’s THAT good?”
But of course, as I said- I could be completely wrong- I’ve only listened to the snippets and demos. Maybe the album will be grammy nominated and lots of people will like it and the critics will receive it well. I want the best for David- I hope you guys don’t think I WANT him to tank or anything. And I realize there was a short time frame, but as I said, I’m just trying to offer a different perspective.
I’m just pointing out that anything is possible. As David Cook says, “Hope for the best, expect for the worst.”
djb..I don’t do caffeine like coffee or soft drinks..can you buh-lieve that?? oh my heck..I would be all over the place if I did!! But I do love CHOCOLATE every now & then..I am into this health thing cuz of David! The HIGH I’m on is totally about David! BUT if you have a little bit of chocolate..I’ll take it!! The pics of David on the web are to die for..***sigh***, then the snippets..we are slowly & softly being killed by David!
11/11 is gonna be like Christmas, New Year’s Eve, The 4th of July all put together..for me!
Hi there Liz.! BTW..where does Brett usually post besides FOD..I haven’t seen a post by him in quite a while.
djasgirl..( and/or rascal? I can’t resist )
It’s ok, really..I am pretty amazed at your insights actually..but “Hope for the best, expect the worst”..I just can’t and won’t ever expect the worst when it comes to David, sorry.
djasgirl – It’s refreshing to hear a non-devotional take on the song leaks. But just from a logical point of view, the only fair comparison would be if you measured Chris Brown/BSB leaked snippets (not the finished albums) against David’s.
You’re probably right about the music critics, but the fact of the matter is, professional reviewers just aren’t as influential as they once were. Why? You’re lookin’ at it. The Internet.
There’s a lot of nonsense online, obviously, but in terms of supporting creativity in a worldwide way, its power is unparalleled. That could work for or against David, of course. I’m trying to keep the faith that it’ll be “for.” Cool discussion here, lovin’ it!
Playing the Devil’s advocate are you djasgirl? Hmm….rather jaded for one so young isn’t it? So what if most of us are all a twitter with anticipation? Gee must just be my age, but at this stage in the game I see the glass as half full. It’s more than probable this album will be very good and the ones to follow (duh) to be even better.
If he is a passing phase for you then enjoy it while it lasts. I have 2 daughters your age so I understand changing tastes. But really don’t worry so! David will be fine. He’s got SF and me.
Count me in, SF, as someone who doesn’t get the doubt about David making album#2. I can’t imagine Jive would be so non-forward-thinking as to let someone like David slip through their fingers, regardless of how this debut album turns out.
Surely, they have not forgotten the “Archumania” that started off the AI7 season. That is sooo not going away anytime soon. And I haven’t even gotten to David’s incredible musical talent.
Say it with me now (and again and again): DAVID WILL BE FINE! MORE THAN FINE!
Silverfoxe/224- I have lots of chocolate left over from Halloween.no need for it here…I LOVE chocolate but lately, especially yesterday..David’s stuff WAS my chocolate.HAHA
no need for anything else..in fact I do buh-lieve he was my lunch and dinner too…
Afternoon ALL!!!
Haven’t posted in forever as I seem to have lost my log-in details. LOVE the comments though and I come here every day to bask in the glow of the Archulove!!!
I guess we as fans will never know how our fav artist will do in the mainstream music world. All we can do is hope and pray that the rest of the world will fall in love with David the way that we all have:):):):) And…we MUST support him…even if this first album is not the exact one that we wanted. Remember…it is his first and he had TONS of time constraints. That being said…I am LOVING most if not all of the clips so far. I am SO VERY PROUD of David and what he has accomplished and how he pours himself into all that he does. I think I agree with Brooke’s assessment that there may not be a harder working 17 year old on the planet. Let’s remember too that he is 17 and hopefully has years to bless us with his music. I for one CAN NOT WAIT to see how his musical career plays out.
Awestruck…are you on? Are you the one who is in Western Canada? Me too…where are you from? It feels really lonely being an Archuleta fan up here….where the radio stations for some reason won’t play him…yet?!?!?
Anyways…I am a David fan for life and I truly believe that it is going to be an incredible journey:):):) And one that we all get to share together:):):)
I LOVE DAVID ARCHULETA!!!
HG and SF. Count me in. I may not be the sharper tool in the shed but I know music abd especially vocal talent. David WILL BE FINE. Sheesh the album isn’t even out and some have doomed the poor boy.
OMG! silverfoxe! You think I’m rascal? Wow! Thats sooooo cool! I’m so honored. Gee- I wish I’d prepared an acceptance speech!
Oh, and believe me! I’m no good for David- I have a bit of a potty mouth. But I mean… holding hands would be a nice change of pace, right?
I am busy preparing for a week’s vacation starting tomorrow but have enjoyed popping in to see what you all have been discussing…
I was thinking to myself -what standards does one use to “judge” pop music? I would sort of “define” pop music as- easy to listen to, entertaining, current, popular with the masses of the time period, and commercially successful. Also, usually more targeted to the young. David himself said this would be more of a pop record. He even said there’d be something for everyone- he wants this record to be popular with audiences- preferably a wider audience. Pretty obvious Jive wants the same thing.
I think this is different than when an artist produces a record with the intention of a real expression of the artist within. In that case the artist is less concerned with the audience and more concerned with the artistic expression- not that the audience is ever unimportant, just sometimes more and sometimes less. This has been true of all art throughout all of history. Sometimes the artist is commissioned to produce and sometimes they are free to create as they please.
So what are we “judging?” For pop music, I just react simply, “Do I like the way it sounds today?” Any thoughts….?
So who wants the songs leaked early…besides me and rascal?
#222 djasgirl… lol. It’s natural fans praise their Idol. I will in love with the phone book if David sang it… Yes, I am very subjective, when talking about him…
Of course, his album might have bad critics… and I am OK (no disappointment here) if it is a fair/sensible review, I think David also… coz we have to take critics for longer road…
At the same time, praises from fans are also very important to David, he need to build up his confidence and recognise himself as a talented singer.
So I think it subjected to David, could he well balance the praises and the crities (it’s hard, I know), if yes, that will be fine.
Awww, djasgirl / rascal…you can’t fool me!! I know a scam when I see one! haha! Besides, who wouldn’t want to BE rascal??
Seriously, I’m listening, as we speak, to the snippets on my very excellent BOSE headphones in surround sound and I have to tell you, all the snippetts sound really great! I’m still leaning towards DESPERATE but oh my gosh..the others are soooo sublime too!! And YOUR EYES DON’T LIE has me dancing like the Latina in me! What a beat! That one could really be a good choice for the next single?
Oh my heck…too many good choices!
djasgirl- listen, if all you’d have to do is clean up the potty mouth–DO IT!….. I’d have to go through some sort of time machine, …….that’s it!!… a time machine.. …where is HG Wells when you need him?
Happy!!! Your avatar is priceless! We will all (well most of us) need those once those full versions hit our ears!
Desperate has left me desperate …
jackryan – Oh my, thanks! Only one msg with one link was showing up last night, so apologies for not responding to all the others. THANK YOU!!
happy!!!! – hahaha, love your new avatar this morning!
SF – what a score, great vid, thanks!
djasgirl – 174 – I’m mulling your take on this album. It’s not easy to look at it from the outside, but I can see some validity to what your saying, from the stance of those who don’t “get” David, or perhaps haven’t even heard of him yet. (Hard for me to believe, but there probably are plenty still.) I still haven’t heard Crush on our local all-full-of-itself-cool station where I would think it would be played. It’s conceivable that he won’t hit the stratosphere with *this* album. I think that when he invents his own music genre (as he invents his own language!!)—or, in other words, moves more fully into who *he* is rather than tries to fit a prescribed music genre—then we will see his helium balloon lift up into the sky, slowly and beautifully, and glow like a 2nd moon.
On AT 40 with Ryan Seacrest, David jumped from #16 to #11-Ryan referred to him as “Archie”….tee hee hee
Josie #230 ~ I’m with you! I’m already blown away, and it’s not even 11/11.
SF ~ thanks for your response about my hubby. I seldom get a response, so it’s a rare treat. I did enjoy the rap video you posted! Funny that David’s values are the same as my own, and I’m not even Mormon!
Does anyone else play the “What would I love to hear David Sing?” game…? I just stumbled into one, and oh my heck! wouldn’t you just love this? Ben Folds’s “The Luckiest”, with David at the piano. Major thud. (Haha, THAT’s the key in which David plays… the Major Thud !)
I can’t for the life of me understand why there are still areas NOT playing CRUSH?? What the heck??
Who are the “parent” companies of the stations in the areas not playing it?? Is there a conspiracy goin’ on? I
mean come on..Crush is #1 on VH1, and ranked high on all the other important charts..so what’s the DANG problem??
I hear CRUSH on two radio stations here in my city. CRUSH is hit and it should be playing everywhere!! What’s wrong with this picture??
Happy…you betta have those pads hany for me cuz I’m really hyperventilating in ANGER that some Archangels are not hearing our beloved David on the radio! I may need your help!
Heart…you are in my thoughts..what you have & are going through is not easy and I am in awe of you!
The snippets of David’s song selections provide, at best, a glimpse into the “promise” of an aspiring artist.
For me, the snippets of David’s initial compilation of songs demonstrates “promise”, and that fully meets my expectations. For me to expect more would be both unreasonable and unfair, and to claim more would be likewise.
Consequently, when other aficionados’ greater expectations are not met (e.g. he will not receive “critical acclaim”, or he “only” has a shot at “best male pop vocal performance”, or the album will “only” go “gold”) I don’t quite know what to make of it. I do want to thank djasgirl (#174) for adding (accidentally on purpose) a new word to the David Archuleta lexicon: “archi[e]ve” (I inserted the e). What did I archieve today…not much.
David’s artistic “promise”, innate and inherent personal qualities and characteristics, passion, will and determination seem to assure the archievement of some level of success and excellence – as he travels down his long and winding road. We all wish him well. David seems to be at the appropriate place at the appropriate time. Good for him.
First impression of the snippets:
Overall pop feel with degrees of r&b, soul, jazz, funk, that would entice/tease a “casual” listener enough to seriously consider buying the CD. For David’s fans…slam dunk! (DUH)
For me, several songs are promising enough to outshine Crush…you remember…the smash hit…you know…way back like in like September.
Oh, for what it’s worth, this CD will go gold in the twinkling of an eye…and then beyond.
Interesting stuff on Wikipedia about another hastily thrown together album from 1963:
“Please Please Me is the first album recorded by The Beatles, rush-released on March 22, 1963, in the U.K. to capitalize on the success of singles “Please Please Me” and “Love Me Do.” Of the album’s 14 songs, eight were written by Lennon/McCartney.
Interestingly, only “Love Me Do” went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Singles chart. And yet I hear they did okay ….
#244 TOfan: LOL – Jinx – I was thinking that very same thing. In fact, there were a lot of songs on that album, I didn’t like – (what did I know) – my older sister LOVED the album.
HG: You posted some questions a few threads back. David’s alloy blog is asking for questions and some will be selected for David to answer. Here is our chance to ask GOOD questions.
http://www.alloy.com/entertainment/dailygossip/8340/1/
SF – yeah, it’s weird, Crush may be playing on some other station here in Portland, but I expect it to be on KINK, along with John Mayer and Jason Mraz and Death Cab for Cutie and Duffy and Edwin McCain and Ingrid Michelsen and all the others I hear on that station that fall into the Pop category, they play plenty of it, so I don’t get it. And it’s not like I haven’t tried, but I’ve quit requesting now, I don’t want to p**s them off.
TOfan! You rock – fun statistic.
Yea, they did kinda sorta ok. What was the name of that group? Ha ha-Archumania/Beatlemania – call it whatever you like. It’s all good.
Heart – or as I will refer to you from now on “♥” – sending good thoughts to your hubby in his recovery. But he’s got you to take care of him, so hope all will be well.
So, nobody answered my question…anyone looking forward to song leaks before 11/11?
Josie – I am looking forward to song leaks, more snippets, more CD liner, CD pics, anything…it is a long way to 11/11.
Do you know if songs typically leak? I read somewhere that they do just not good quality recordings.
When I said “song” I meant the full song, not the teasers.
Kizzi-hm…being the Libran that I am, I seem to weigh things carefully, so here goes: on the one hand, full versions of David’s songs – low quality; other hand SNIPPETS THAT ARE LEAVING ME BEGGING FOR MORE. Ok, decision made. NEED THE SONGS NOW.
It’s just a thought.
josie..you mean a WHOLE song?? like which one? Do I get a choice?? Aw, any complete song leak would be so sweet! But only if it wouldn’t make David unhappy. I have an idea though..maybe they could leak the songs they think may be the next single…uh, ok then they would have to leak almost all of them..decisions, decisions…oh, I’m so “Desperate”!
Kizzi#245, oh wow! Thanks for the link.
…Okay, pensive- whatever floats your boat. Just remember that success is never guaranteed- no mater how much you love David or how much you believe in him. And having a gold is never a piece of cake- many artists would give their right arm to accomplish such a feat.
And as for “only” getting a vocal performance grammy- that is referring to the fact that the album as a whole, in my opinion, is not strong enough to garner such recognition. But because David is a great singer, if he releases something like Desperate or TBWY, then he definitely has a chance at getting nominated for his vocal performance.
I personally will be happy as long as David continues to make music, and continues to love doing so. Commercial and critical success would be nice, but it isn’t a necessity. Besides- if I really had such high expectations, and cared so much about his public perception, why would I be so calm about pointing out the true quality of the album? Wouldn’t I be freaking out about it?
silverfoxe- it’s so funny that you think i’m rascal. that’s cute!
Josie- *sigh* I don’t think you really get what I’m saying. I haven’t doomed him- I’m just saying success is never a sure thing. Just because you think David is the best thing ever doesn’t mean everyone will.
Hm. If David’s next single doesn’t match the success of crush, I have a this funny feeling that everyone here (except rascal and I of course) is going to freak out. You’ll blame promotion, say it was the wrong single, blame the anti-david bias, blame Cook’s fans, say jive is throwing him under the bus… everything. It’ll be interesting.
Sorry about the last paragraph- that was a random thought.
I crack myself up. Earlier I said I didn’t notice that “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” had any whistling in the background and just now, I found myself whistling the tune. I’m a piece of work.
djasgirl-no need to sigh-I wasn’t implying you were dooming him and I don’t give a hoot if others don’t care for his music. I do. I have many e-family and friends who do that I can chat with. I’ve been blogging about David since the early days and I find myself just trying to help us all keep this thing called ODD in perspective, even if, at times, it appears that I am not in control myself. It’s very apparent to me that you are wise beyond your years, as your words prove. I’m just trying to keep it fun and loving here…after all, I am Momma Josie. And please, ask rascal if I ever “freaked” out during the silly AI show. Never, not once. I’m a realist, but one who likes to see the glass as half full…always, bar none. No worries k?
I’m luvin this discussion – Honestly, I am the worst critic when it comes to David’s music, because, not to use a Randy phrase, yeah…he could sing the phonebook. It’s all about the voice – he can sing anything and I would enjoy it.
I actually don’t like pop music – in fact I never listened to it except when I was maybe 10 or 11. I was a big folk rock lover along with old standards, Broadway, jazz, etc. Now, I listen to it all the time because i can’t seem to stay away from THE VOICE OF DAVID. Yes, I know, I’m completely ODD and I’m a prisoner of the mostly horrible music that comes off the Z100 radio waves just to hear David sing.
The only reason I want this album to be commercially successful is because I want David to continue making music. For him it’s all about the music, and that’s what I love about him but he won’t be able to continue to do what he does best if his music doesn’t produce the dollars. However, I’m optimistic – I think it’s going to be a big money maker for Jive.!
Kizzi..I wanted to ask David what happened to THE SUIT and could I have it please..bust someone else already asked..DANG IT!!
djasgirl…you know what? you can’t be rascal, cuz I don’t think he has RANDOM thoughts. Sorry I misjudged you rascal..And djasgirl, I’m sorry for you that you’re not rascal.
And if the next single isn’t a smash..I’ll chock it up to picking the wrong song as the single…But that will not happen.
ooo, I meant BUT someone else asked, but it was a “bust” for me???
djasgirl – I don’t think many of us will freak out if our individual fondest dreams aren’t achieved.
We have a lot of wishful thinking and act as if….., and a ton of fun fan girl-ly dialogue going on.
I don’t describe my self as an “Archie” or “Archangel.” Not sure how to categorize myself because I think David is doing great, building his fan base outside of AI and doesn’t need anything from me but my appreciation of his music and his artistry. So, for me, what ever he achieves is meant to be and the future is yet his to write.
ninaf- would you like to go see Dylan at the Palace Theater on 11/21? I want to go, but don’t know if enough to go alone. We could meet for dinner and meet at dinner, haha!!
ninaf- Thank you I could not have stated it more perfectly. I will add that from a purely selfish point of view the thought of not getting to hear THAT VOICE sends jolts of pure terror down my spine. That is the one thing that I would find hard to bear. So David has to be successful enough to continue singing however that might be.
Josie- I would love a whole song to be leaked but if of good quality and only if it wouldn’t cause David sadness or anxiety. Otherwise, I would steel myself to wait. GRRRRR!!!
Silverfoxe – I think there are more silver pajama suit appreciators out there than I imagined. You were soooo right!
kizzi258-ram260-ninaf255— right on sisters!!!!!
am I an adult or a kid?….
I call this “dreamy eyes” and this is one of my favorite pics recently. Go to FOD scroll down to bottom of first page, click on “previous entries” on bottom left, on this next page scroll down to Radio Station Fun-Q 100 in Atlanta. Oh and if you click on it, the pic gets a little bigger. Ohh gossh!!
ram-agreed. 150%. Leaked only if it wasn’t going to be a detriment to David. But considering the number of physical CD’s I’m buying for friends, family and gifting to sweet kids around the globe, he’ll be gettin’ my money.
djasgirl, would I be surprised if David’s album doesn’t sell well? Yes, I would. I think he’s got the potential and from the snippets, the songs are solid enough as far as pop music is concerned. Not the greatest pop out there, but there are enough songs that have potential to be hits (I came up with at least 5 songs from this album that could be hit singles).
Would I “freak out” if he didn’t sell well or if he got panned? Well, no, I wouldn’t. That’s a possibility too. And, if you honestly ask me to judge David against his contemporaries, I’m sorry, but I got’s to be honest. Generation Y’s music is a whole lot of blah. Hip-Hop, or rather, “Hip Pop,” has lost its raison d’etre, and if we have to compare the pop sounds coming from the Chris Browns, Justin Timberlakes, Ushers, Rihannas, et al, to earlier generations, puh-lease! No comparison. The current pop scene falls incredibly short.
David is like a breath of fresh air, as far as I’m concerned. And the freshness is all in his voice. The only downside to this album, just from what I can tell with the snippets, is the production doesn’t put enough faith in his vocal instrument to let him lead.
Unfortunately, here, the production wasn’t done intelligently because no intelligent musician would purposely downplay such vocal mastery, unless such musicians have become too used to working with thin-voiced vocalists in the current market and were not prepared for what David had to offer. In this rushed job to get the album out, I’m sure such mistakes were made. But we’ve got future albums to rectify the situation (and, yes, I’ll say it again, there will be more albums).
That David’s voice is unique and compelling enough (plus his entire persona has me devoted) for me to want to even put down enough $$ on possibly two different CDs (in this present economic crisis) just to support him, when, if it were anybody else, they’d be lucky if I bought one single from them, is reason enough to believe he’s got tons of people like me (representing different age groups, races, ethnicities, and genders) who are willing to do the same come 11/11.
And that’s just it in a nutshell, djasgirl. There are folks here on this blog who have not listened to contemporary pop in DECADES because there hasn’t been anyone compelling enough to draw us into the music scene. David has gotten me to listen again, and I’m a big fan of vocal music period – from Bessie Smith to Billie Holiday to Ella Fitzgerald to Barbara Streisand to Nina Simone to Eva Cassidy(thanks to David’s introduction) to Adele. That’s who I admire, and I’m including David on the list. The teens and the tweens are going to help David sell well, but it’s his mature audience that’s going to keep him around. And I think that’s a pretty solid fanbase to have, and to definitely keep him in business.
heart #168- just wanted to say hi…..and welcome home to your husband
Ditto what Happy #262 said!
Josie #247, I’m kind of torn about whether or not I’d like to hear more song leaks. Full song leaks might help prevent me from spontaneously combusting from excitement on 11/11 however! (Seriously…)
Happy – that sounds good – it would be nice to actually meet someone in person that “gets David.” Besides, I’ve always loved Dylan. E-mail me at ninaffalk@gmail.com and we can talk more.
HG#265: “…musicians have become too used to working with thin-voiced vocalists in the current market and were not prepared for what David had to offer.” I think you nailed it, girl.
Kizzi…I know!! And go on, keep dissing THE SUIT, someday we’ll all go to the R&R Hall of Fame and see it encased behind glass as the First Suit worn in concert by the one & only DAVID ARCHULETA, winner of every conceivable award for music until finally, conducted into the Hall where they had to build a whole new wing just for David, The Voice, as he will become known, we won’t even have to call him by name, just THE VOICE! Whew! I am out of breath..but do you get my drift about THE SUIT??
I know, josie hated it too..I’m in the minority..but that’s cool, cuz I’m right!
#262 Happy: When I am visiting NotingDavid I am definitely in touch with my inner child. “Not a bad place to be, is it?”
dang..NOT conducted..INDUCTED!! geesh..I’m done for a while!
#270 – silverfoxe – I have a strong feeling that over time you will be proved right about many things! Ahem….except about rascal=djasgirl, *cough*
You have great intuition–sometimes I think you are “channeling” a higher power.
Just getting my davatar ready for nov. 11, when–just a hunch–I’ll be finding that I like the songs David wrote the best. I read quickly and incompletely, but my impression is the bonus tracks are all David’s own. Right? For me, so far, (co-authored) ALTNOY is the pick for 2nd single.
If there’s one thing I’m always and forever sayin’ it’s… “That crazy ole Josie. . .” … lol “piece’o'work” And I have NO PROB with early leakage of entire songs. It certainly wouldn’t stop me from multiple purchases (a number of which I’ve already made!) But entire song leakage could hurt David, so… meh… I can wait. (If I must.)
djasgirl, right on girl. Call it like you see it. (And I do appreciate a good devil’s advocate!) Pop music success (or failure) is pretty much always biased in some way. My impression is that this one is solid (and deliciously diverse) at the very least and I can’t really tell yet whether there are any “disposable” songs on the list, but to my ear, no there aren’t. I do find it fun to listen in the track order as listed on iTunes, and just letting it play while you do stuff. I find it to be mighty fine. Mighty. The potential of what lies just beyond what we’ve heard in the snippets is hugely exciting, and I doubt it will disappoint. (I love getting a new album “in my ear,” which for me takes at least a half dozen full playings. For me, this can only happen after the real thing is available.)
Freo, I think Jive and Azoff are hunkering down for David—I have little doubt he’ll have future album deals, almost regardless of how the debut performs. (I could be wrong, of course, because I am no “industry” expert, but that’s my distinct impression.)
HAPPY!! LMAO! love the avatar… lord knows, SOMEbody hadda do it. lolol
SF: Ask David not only if he HAS “The Suit” but if he would consider auctioning it off for a good cause.
(I have confessed to you a strange affection for the suit inspite of IT-(and MY) self, haven’t I? I’d let you win any bid…lol… jez sayin’)
HG: bravo! re: “no intelligent musician would purposely downplay such vocal mastery…” All I can say…and lord knows I say it and I say it (to the jive production engineers)… when it comes to David Archuleta, puhleeze More Baby, Less Bathwater!
random questions: does cookie have leaks? why is cookie’s stuff listed under “pop” at iTunes and not “rock?” (enquiring peabrains want to know…)
random beebee thought– contrary to popular sentiment, even tho I do love ALTNOY, I also have become addicted to My Hands, and I *think* it might be “hotter” for radio release. Funky lyrics and all… I hope both (and more) are released as singles. (I’m so greedy sometimes…)
(dang, we live too far away from trick or treaters… we got NO CANDY. :/ What was I THINKING?)
Oh beebee I just adore you – you come zooming in and sprinkle your infectious wonderfulness all over the place. And that is one of the many reasons I adore you
♥♥
And oh you…playing the devil’s advocate too?? Well I love you anyway. But no harm done…right djasgirl? I respect everyone’s opinion and have no problem with what people feel. If you all know me, you know that I don’t get involved with drama. No matter how it gets started…Happy Saturday night angels…♥♥
beebee, I was wondering the same thing..I was just over at iTunes ( bought some wonderful chills down my spine music by Selena Cross ) and too noticed that Cook’s album is listed as POP, not rock..didn’t he say over & over it would definitely be a rock album? Very strange…
Be ready for ANOTHER competition to see which POP album is better and does better!!
Oh and BTW..CRUSH is at #20, ANGELS #48, and THE DAVID ARCHULETA ALBUM is at #15.
I second HG’s comments above. Before David, I had not even listened to commercial radio in at least 18 years, instead listening to local independent rock/world/bluegrass/ folk stations and National Public Radio or its equivalent (BBC, Australian ABC) in other countries in which I’ve lived. I’ve been totally out of the loop as far as popular commercial artists.
To all my friends up there….David has sucked us in hasn’t he? I have over 3000 songs on my iPod which prior to David Archuleta, I listened to on random. Now I listen to the radio, (which truly I abhor) just long enough to scan the stations and see if Crush is playing, then BAM! back to the iPod and DA. I can’t really tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
I had a laugh today thinking that if David decides to leave the music industry after this first album, I will personally fly out to Murray and kick his a$#. Just kidding — I’d never do anything so crazy, but I’d seriously go through withdrawal.
Freo-I’m so visual; I envisioned that and it made me LOL.
Imagine all of us pulling into town to give that boy a talkin’ to? But we’re all in control of our ODD…right.
Josie, a fellow fan and I joked the other day that we’d both end up in therapy if he quits the music business! haha
Freo..#281…well maybe you wouldn’t really go to Murray to kick his a$$, But I WOULD!! After all he’s put us through?? Having to listen to POP radio, surfing the net almost 24/7, sitting through one or more AI concerts just to see & hear him sing 4, count ‘em 4 songs! Having to hide how we feel for fear of being arrested for having these uh, innocent but to some people, inappropriate thoughts, wishing we were 16 again and cursing heaven for being born to early or David too late, wanting to know every little thing about him, gushing & carrying on over every thing he does & says, talking like him, changing our lives because of him, waiting with breathless anticipation for the next song, the next concert, the next anything having to do with David..and I pro-buh-blee missed a hundred other reasons I would kick his cute little A$$ if he ever quit! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!
Freo-have you ever that way about any other artist?? LOL
SF you are awesome and I mean AWESOME! I yhink you summed it up.
David’s reply to is desire to sing – at 30 seconds into the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8wtTU8Gkko
I was really into Air Supply in the early 1980s, but it was dramatically different without the Internet, as many of you know. Other than that, I haven’t really followed an artist as rabidly. Something about David is captivating!
SF284- ROTFL, that’s why we bow before you…..you are the best!
Happy-although I love the paddles, I do miss those brownies of yours
Happy-although I love the paddles, I do miss those brownies of yours
josie, happy…I take no pleasure in wanting to get physical with David…wait that didn’t come out right..cuz I would get pleasure…no, I mean …uh never mind! You know what I mean..i wouldn’t want to beat him..but I WOULD by golly if he ever leaves us!!
Kizzie, then you have to post that link showing an innocent child with the BIG voice and I melt..how could I ever think of abusing him in any way!! NEVER as long as he keeps singing he’s safe from me!
Dang, nothing I say is coming out right….
Freo..Air Supply…Lost in Love..one of my favorite songs, kinda like how we’re all LOST in LOVE with DAVID, eh josie??
Seriously, I don’t know how y’all keep up here! So many great things said up above that I agree with wholeheartedly, but I can only reply to a few and still get anything done around here!
Pensive #243 ~ BRAVO! Couldn’t agree with you more!
Highervibe #246 ~ I waited & waited & waited for my Orlando station to play Crush, and I finally quit emailing them or calling them, and went back to the other “Pop” station that Kizzi had told me about. Well, lo & behold, I just happened to be channel-surfing last week (as I do every day since Crush first played in NYC way back when) ~ and there it was! I quickly checked to make sure it was actually the radio ~ and I’ve never been so excited over a song playing on the radio in my life! So eventually, it’ll come ~ just hang in there!
Josie #247, yes, I’m taking care of my hubby and my Mom and working full-time, Am I stressed 24/7? Sometimes ~ and today was one of those days!
Happy #266 ~ Hi! And thanks!
SF #277 ~ I just have to comment that my good friend (who is primarily a Cookie fan, and loves DA too) & I were discussing the same thing this past week. She didn’t realize that Cook was listed under “Pop” until I told her. I definitely don’t think he WANTS to be under Pop, but TPTB have put him there. I was worried that it will only cause “competition” to begin again. I wish they’d keep these genres straight!
Off to check out when SNL comes on. I hope I don’t end up sorry I watched! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!
Freo…SF… aww… you’ll kick that lil archu_bootie over my daid beebee BODY! LOL!
Josie, (#280) my beloved fellow suckee… re: “I can’t really tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing.” —you are asking the wrong group, dahlink. Why there’s absolutely nothing bad atallllll about … O.D.D. It’s the disease that just keeps on giving. (er, wait, Freo, SF, maybe you’re right…lol)
Oh, and Freo, is it you who longs for some pure Archu R’n'B ? (I can’t remember) I crave that, too. I don’t mean what they seem to call r’n'b here lately. I mean the real *thang*.
His styling and backbone-disintegrating delivery for “Crazy” and “WOTWTC” positively send me over the edge… e..v..e.r..y…. s..i..n..g..l..e…. t..i..m..e. David is so freaking soulful it drives me out of MAH MIND. Those dudes at Jive had better appreciate that. (What does it take to “make them understand” it? They must understand it…now if we can only get them to respect it.) I realize they may not pull that entire rabbit out of the hat any time soon. I mean, I detect a piece of that soulfulness in every single thing David touches, actually, but I’m talking about some upfront out’n'out *in yo face* soul/soulful, blues, RHYTHM. Now, I completely understand that David in fact does have something to prove to certain key sectors about market viability and pop stuff, and hey, he LOVES good pop, so I’m ULTRA excited FOR him (and us!) just to have the creative thrill and fun of playing in that sandbox, and running with the big pop dogs… but I hope that whole “100% Organic, Free Range, Archuleta Soulful Musicality” thing he has scratches HIS musical itch as much as it does MINE because, MAN when he does THAT… it’s hard to believe he isn’t madly loving what he’s doing with every fiber of his being. I can only hope and PRAY he wants to lay more of that on us on a regular basis (and that the frackin’ jive engineers will at least eventually keep their synthesized paws off). Because that-there, imo, is some pure unadulterated love in action, baby. And EVERYBODY understands and loves THAT. I can’t imagine ANY demographic not THUDDING (Thunderously!) across the board with material like that — digital or LIVE.
SO… I figure David will continue writing, and over time will add to the good pop stuff out there in a way that will (along with others, some whom David himself respects and admires) help redefine/raise standards and expectations for pop by what he/they throw into the pop cauldron. You know… change up and influence the recipe. Maybe in the course of that he’ll write his VERY OWN bare bones, rhythmic [ORGANIC] soul music
. He has time, I do believe. I have no doubt that over time he’ll do his part on that score in the natural course of growing and evolving— and of course I believe he has already begun. BUT… he’s busy “becoming a star” right now. Yay! I like that, too….lol (alrighty… I’m done now…)
and Kizzi I LOOOOOOVE that vid.
You guys crack me up! Thanks for the video Kizzi . . I never tire of watching David’s audition. Randy: “I see no sign of vocal whatever poral-i-sisim” lol
Back to lurk-ville.
SF #284 – I agree with Josie – you summed it for me too.
I want to say that I think you are all terrific and I love being part of rascal’s online family even if I don’t post often. I am working on overcoming my fear of expressing my feelings in a group. I need to follow David’s example – I guess we are never too old to learn:)
Thanks for the all happiness you bring into my life!
If I gave a darn about how critics felt about David I would probably not be a fan because I remember the bludgeoning he took from several critics during the season. Being a fan hasn’t been an easy ride. I am a frequent poster at Mj’s big blog (under another pseudonym of course) and I had to wear a hard hat and steel toe boots to navigate the negativity, especially during the season. I had to wade through the gaspy comments, the ArchuD2 comments, the questioning whether he was autistic comments!!!! Like I said it wasn’t an easy ride.
I have no doubts that David will make another cd. I don’t think this one will have across the board critical acclaim, but I am sure his vocal ability will be praised. How can it not.
Not all cds that sell tons are great cds. I still think Clay Aiken’s first cd sold almost three million because of his bitter fans (sorry to step on the toes of any claymates, but just pretty much calling it as I see it). Measure of a Man was mostly pure dreck. He’s made better cds sense then that have sold only a fraction of that, I am not talking about his xmas cd, because they tend to be a different animal entirely), and that leads me to believe that instead of gaining fans after such a ‘stellar’ cd, he actually lost fans, his last cd sold horribly even though it was considered his best by many. His first cd was not a critical success even though it sold well.
I bought Clay up, not to bash him but to talk about the first runner up who outsold the winner. There were so many variables as to why that happened that had nothing to do with the actually singers i.e. Ruben and Clay.
I don’t think David has a bunch of vengeful fans trying to prove that he actually won. I also think that David has converted alot of people who actually hated him on the show. (just read mj’s blog sometimes) David has proven himself as a unique performer, who has shown growth in just the past 10 months of being under the microscope. He knows how to play the game without becoming such a polarizing force.
I don’t know how well he will sell. Only a handful of cds sell platinum these days. That is a reflection not of David’s talent, but the failure of the record companies to keep up with tecnology that allowed for music to be stolen instead of purchased, and other factors. Some of my favorite artists will never or barely sell platinum, Ray LaMontagne, Marc Brussard, Lizz Wright, etc, but they are still my favorites and they have deals that allow them to continue to record. That is the kind of career that I hope David has, that he is allowed to grow and produce, and that he has a solid group of realistic fans that will allow him the room to do just that.
For the record, I am enjoying the snippets and can’t wait for the whole cd. I have preordered from itunes and am planning on going to Times Square and getting the wrist band at 8am so that my daugthers can get their cds signed. Will this be his Thriller? I certainly hope not. What is sadder than someone who peaked at 18? No his Thriller will be somewhere down the line, when he holds the reins of his career.
Sorry for the long post, but I had to absorb an entire day of posts before I could comment.
Hi everyone! Coming in late – about a hundred posts from where I left off last night
djasgirl on #175 – Thanks for your candor re the album’s snippets and your projected take on how David’ maiden effort may unfold. It always helps to keep us all grounded.
What is so nice about this board is that we are allowed to be as we see/feel fit – realistic, supremely silly, “vent-y” (for lack of a better term, haha), dreamy, swoony and rah-rah-rah! No matter what, rascal has made a very accepting house here.
Re the fans reactions: I’d rather have David’s loyal Archies squee-ing over his debut album – at least that would assure the viability of his maiden effort — which in today’s pop landscape is the be-all and end-all, unfortunately. This is doubly so for The Archuleta because of the initial and persistent impression that he is only a balladeer, that his voice would not fit a mainstream tune, that therefore he is not commercially viable.
His first single “Crush” proved otherwise. David is easily up to the task of finessing a mainstream pop tune. And HGyou are right in pointing out that his voice is the best instrument in this undertaking (hence my initial frustration with Angels). David has that warm, inviting vocals to pull the listeners in.
Consider this: how many times have we been glued to our seats, after intending to do something else, and end up hours still listening to him & forgetting what we initially planned to do? Not content, we scour cyberspace for anything David. Riiighhght?? That VOICE has that power.
Kizzi Am not surprised that fans across the fansites are preferring the “pop” snippets over the ballad. For the so called “pop” snippets, all it takes is a hook, a couple of catchy verses — and that is what is captured in the snippets. Ballads usually need a build-up that no 30-second snippet could capture with justice.
Funny thing is “To Be With You” may end up as the most requested theme song for weddings – haha!
In fact I can hear a number of tracks to be movie soundtracks
JosieSince am far away and will take time for my CD to be on my hands, of course I am for some leaks. Selfish of me, I know! And don’t get me started on those dang bonus tracks — boy what would I give to have even just the snippets of those goldies! OMGosh, what I’d give to duet with David – gaaaahh!!!
Silver just to follow-through what Kizzi & Beebee said about the suit, yeah I can imagine the SUIT being part of the R&R Hall of Fame
BUT it must be annotated as follows: “Here lies ‘The Suit’, infamous during the AI S7 Tour and which nobody liked except for SF, donore and original owner, to whom we are most thankful for its preservation.”
On the general discussion of the album’s future, here’s my 2 cents worth: The thing with pop music today is that they are not written – they are manufactured. And this is true in David’s case if we are to based it on the harried & hurried pace it was produced.
Today’s pop music is a product engineered by people in suits who sit around & discuss the best way to get money out of our pockets and into theirs. They don’t give half a *&^% about the musical integrity of the “art” they commission. When they find a trend that sticks, they milk it until there isn’t a cent left in it. One music critic was on-point when he asked “…Don’t you think it’s weird that any %$#hole with a raggaeton beat can get on the radio now? Why does every wannabe teen celebrity princess can come out with an album? …. You are being sold a culture that you have absolutely no input in creating….”
IMHO, the importance of David’s debut album is the proof of his viability as a commercial musician — that’s why he had to go pop and that’s why it needs to sell. (Read: buy the physical album)
What differentiates him — with Crush and the snippets of the album — they do prove that The Archuleta easily has the sound and chops to be a mainstream pop singer of significance.
Am looking forward to his next album (I have no doubt about that) in which his impressive pipes will be used for truly worthy songs.
Silverfoxe#284, ROFLMAO!!!!
If David kills me softly, you kill me HARD! Seriously, I was drinking tea and spewed it all over my screen laughing so hard.
Having said that, my sentiments exactly!
beebee, me too! me too! I want some real soul, some of that deep, loving R&B vibe David is beyond capable of delivering. One of these days, we will get it – straight no chaser!
Thank you, thank you, Brooklyndawn, for pointing out the obvious – “what is sadder than someone who peaked at 18?” Surely, we must view this upcoming CD as the beginning and certainly not the peak. Let’s all give him enough room to grow (I’m not just talking to his devoted angels – Jive and Azoff, I’m looking at you!).
fascinating discussion!
I too am anxiously awaiting “critical” feedback on David’s first effort, but I also keep telling myself that critics are a subjective breed… obviously, what they say will have no effect on me, I’ve already pre-ordered several versions of his album… for me, it’s as someone else said on this post… I love just about anything David sings, because I’m so addicted to his voice. However, it would be nice if he got decent reviews, because it would help draw in the non AI listeners.
One question I have though…I am completely puzzled by Britney Spears’ continued popularity… I recall reading positive reviews on at least one of her albums, and I just can’t imagine how David could not also receive acclaim… he at least, can sing! (To say nothing of all of the other characteristics that I so admire about him…) Maybe it’s just not a good comparison, and I’m showing my complete lack of understanding of the pop scene… but still…
Jackryan, as always, the voice of reason and expertise. You’re right: the SUITS who drive the industry don’t care one way or another about David’s impact as an “artist,” only as a “product.”
I will say, however, that, just as SF is prepared to kick David’s cute little archubootie if he ever quits the music scene, I would most definitely kick some serious A$$ up at Jive if they should ever cut him loose (should he fail to sell whatever quota they expect with this album). Of course, I will need some Arch Angel help there.
momofteens, to be fear to Britney, as awful as her singing voice is, the girl knows how to put on a show. She’s a pop act extraordinaire, so I’ll give her props for that.
Beebee294- “I hope that …thing he has scratches HIS musical itch as much as it does MINE because, MAN when he does THAT…Because that-there, imo, is some pure unadulterated love in action, baby. And EVERYBODY understands and loves THAT. I can’t imagine ANY demographic not THUDDING (Thunderously!) across the board with material like that — digital or LIVE.”
HG299-“One of these days, we will get it – straight no chaser!”
OMG ladies, I need to change my avatar when you talk like that!!!!!!!!!!
HG, I guess you’re right, I’ve heard she puts on quite a show, but is that what sells her songs? What is it about her that is so fascinating to the media and to the public… and really, is that why people buy her so called music? I know I’m being mean, but I really just don’t get it?!
momofteens#300/304– what sells her songs? ….SEX!!
after I posted to momofteens I looked at my avatar and had to laugh….
momofteens- In keeping with the topic of this thread, let’s be honest, Brittany is more in your face, but David’s “charisma” (as we call it until Dec 19) IS part of his star power.
Funny, momofteens, I had written “to be fear to Britney,” instead of “to be fair.” Freudian slip much?
The thing with Britney is I think people enjoy her trainwrecky persona, which adds to the on-stage appeal. She’s a consummate performer. Of course, we’ve also witnessed her grow up (or descend) from a teenage Lolita (replete with her virginity pledge) to this Hollywood bad girl. The kind of stuff I hope David can avoid (which I believe he will) cause nothing feeds the hungry wolf that is the media like an innocent teen gone wild in adult years.
305… Happy, I love your avatar by the way… so appropriate for this crazy Noting David family!
I guess I’m just being dense… of course, you’re right, but it is just not where my mind goes. I do know that one of the reasons I love David is that he doesn’t go there, and won’t go there, and of course, would never have to resort to anything besides his incredible voice and musicality to sell his music.
How fortunate that David is such a shining example of positivity and purity in this cynical world we live in!
HG, I did have to laugh when I saw the fear instead of the fair… but I didn’t think I should tease you about it!
Anyway, yes, you and Happy are both right, I guess Britney does give people entertainment because of the way she has been living her life. I just didn’t get it, but you have helped clarify it for me.
And yeah, David is becoming a star, and I think, accepting it. Watching his confidence grow during the last round of interviews has just been delightful. Just love listening to him ramble…
Hello everyone! You are not going to believe this! I just got off of the phone with David!! I’m so excited right now I can barely type. First, my brother called me and said you won’t believe this, but I’m on my way to the Greek for a concert with Jeff Archuleta, Laurie, his sister and of course DAVID!!! He said Jason Castro is coming too! He met up with them and they all hopped in a van to go to the concert. I’m so jealous! Jeff called my brother last minute and asked him if he could go. I got a call from my brother and then he passed the phone to DAVID!!! Fangirl scream!!! I told him I was listening to his tracks on his new CD and loved Barriers and can’t get enough of I’m just too little not over you. Laurie said he wrote that one, and of course that’s why I just love it. I told him how much he means to all of us and how I could have the worst day and just listen to one of his songs and the whole world is different. WOW!!! I also told him I can’t wait till I can see him again and just hang out with him. He said that would be cool with you and your brother. WOW!!! I’m in heaven right now….melt…melt… melt.
momofteens Why Britney? I invite you to read this..
An Economy Grows Around Britney Spears
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/01/28/an-economy-grows-around-b_n_83673.html
There is one more article – a very telling tale of Britney’s value to the tabloid industry, but I can’t locate it at the moment.
In fairness to BS (tee-hee), we have to recognize that more than any other single artist, she was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late ’90s. Not only did she sell millions of records, she was a media fixture regardless of what she was (or wasn’t) doing; among female singers of the era (many of whom followed in her footsteps).
It is so hard for me to be objective when it comes to David. Somewhere along the way I have become very invested in his success. I want so much for him to do well and to be appreciated. It’s weird because I have NEVER had this experience. There is just such goodness in him, I want the world to be changed by him in a good way. He makes me want to be a better person.
When I first heard him sing Crush I wanted so bad for it to be good that I was overly protective and listened for anything that people might not like. I have to admit at first I did not know what to think of Crush. In hindsight I realized I just could not be objective. Now with some time to calm down I listen to Crush in a much calmer and rational state and I wonder why I doubted. It is a great song!
Sometimes I wish I was not quite so invested. I think I would enjoy him more right off the bat. My goal it to get rid of the baggage, not be so defensive and simply enjoy his music. Right! Goodluck with that!
just coming back from YouTube..I just LOVE re-viewing all the vids of David! Especially the AI tour performances! Every one is different, even though the songs were the same..does that not say so much about David? He improved his delivery with every performance..so I IMAGINE that will be the norm for him in concert..when he sings HIS songs it may not sound like the recorded version, but so much better. I think we will love the songs on his album more when we hear him sing them live. My gosh..the anticipation for his solo concert is so exciting,,when & where will they be..will I be one of the lucky ones to get tickets close up?? See I don’t care if you all do, as long as I do..I love ya’ll now but when it comes to getting the best tickets..I will fight for them! No kidding!! It won’t be pretty!! David has no idea the chaos he’s going to create when tickets go on sale for his solo concerts…not pretty at all!
I wonder what he’ll wear, will he have background singers, will he play guitar as well as piano? Oh the
anticipation!!
beebee #294, I am seriously in LOVE with your post about David’s R&B roots and how that doesn’t show on the debut album. I’m loving the album, but your post totally excites me as to what we can look forward to in the future if David is successful with this debut.
I’m reposting it in the Artist thread.
jackryan4DA #298, I had the same exact thought as to why the ballads are not getting as much love over at IDF as the “hooky” pop songs.
momofteens #300, I remember reading reviews for Britney’s previous outing, “Blackout.” I remember critics’ praise being pretty exclusively focused on what the producers had done in creating catchy dance tracks and creating material that was suited to the limits of Britney’s voice. I listened to the album and I actually really liked it for the same reasons.
The critics’ approach fascinated me, because, at least for some genres of music like pop and dance music, they evaluated artists’ albums primarily in terms of their viability as commercial products. They focused on aspects of the music related to its commercial viability and only secondarily focused on aspects of musical artistry. (It reminds me of how TV “political commentators” talk about campaign tactics so much as if we were discussing a sport and who has the “best election strategy,” as opposed to the debating the underlying substantive issues themselves.)
It is likely that David’s debut will get some of that approach. I personally expect that a lot of critics will praise David’s voice and direct much of their criticism at the production and arrangement of the album, and whether certain songs have commercial potential.
erin4david311- that’s crazy..I guess David got to hid Jason Mraz concert after all!!!
erin4david #311, lucky you!! That’s amazing!! How does your brother know Jeff?????
silverfoxe #314, I personally will be jonesing for tickets for David’s finale night, because we know how David is with finales!!
Hi all!
I have listened to the snippets and have some thoughts, would love your opinion:
*I think the strongest tracks overall are Crush, ALTNOY, and Running. If I were in charge, these would be the singles, in that order
. I think the album could sell very well on the strength of three successful singles alone. 4th single IMO – “My Hands”. My personal favorite? Touch My Hand. Strongest song on the entire album? Crush
*We need to remember that not every song on a pop album needs to be good for it to be a success. Nelly Furtado’s first album (Woah, Nelly!) was a huge success and only had 2 hit singles (I’m Like a Bird and Turn out the Light).
*I think the album is good overall, but that there are a couple of songs in particular that will be called out by the critics. Barriers for the shouting and Your Eyes Don’t Lie for the thunder bolt sound effects and whistling. I would not be surprised if these two were David’s least favorite. They sound the most manufactured, boy-bandy to me. Interestingly, I feel if these two songs had been replaced with more thoughtful/adult songs, it would change the whole feel of the album, as most of the other songs are more mature/sophisticated sounding.
*I really like Don’t Let Go – to me it sounds like a Ferras or David Gray song, and I always have felt this would be a good vibe for David
*I think it’s too bad there really aren’t any “message” songs on the album, aside from Angels. David loves these and they are his signature! I have a feeling this may have been due to David’s battles with Jive that Rascal alluded to. Listening to the songs, I feel like you can guess the ones that Jive wanted and the ones that David wanted. I think they did want to make him bubblegum and that he resisted as much as he could while compromising where he had to.
*I’d be surprised if David likes the arrangement of “Desperate” – sounds the least like him to me.
I’m excited to hear Crush live and for it to finally crack the Top 10!!!! Go LittleCrusher go!!!
He was so sweet and he laughed a couple times at me. I’m so happy for all of them, he has so little time. I don’t think he knew about the tracks. I told him that he’s being called a track teaser. He said you can’t hear the whole song right? He’s so adorable!
Erin, wow, that’s crazy that you just talked to David! I’d probably tell him that I already love “You Can” and a few others are growing on me. Thanks for sharing. It sounds weird, but I take comfort in knowing where he is.
Glad he is able to see his aunt and Jason, too.
I’m working on a freelance article (due Monday morning — eek!) right now. David is a nice diversion.
ronaldsf, my brother and Jeff went to college together and played trumpet together. We’ve been following David since Star Search days!
Laurie, his aunt is so sweet. She and Jeff were the one that got me an autograph picture of David for my birthday in June. Then I had it put on a teeshirt and wore it to the concert in July at Staples. That’s what I’m wearing in the picture. I’m crazy!
erin4david, that’s amazing! Wow, after following David all these years, it must be so amazing to see him living his dream! And I’m so glad you got to express what he means to you! Let me join you in your squeeing!
erin4david…Hello, I’m Silverfoxe..And I want to be your BESTEST friend…or housekeeper ( I’ll do windows ) or
cook ( I can learn Pad Thai ) or baby sitter ( if no kids, how ’bout dogs? ) or any little ole thang you need!!
Where do you live?? I’m packing my bags and can move there in a heartbeat! Just say the word!!
I was a voice for all of us! He means so much to all of us. I get very emotional just talking about him. He was brilliant at 11 years old. I just couldn’t believe how he could sing then. Now, he has moved people across the world. I told him he inspires all of us to be better people.
erin gaaaaaahhhhhh! omgosh you are so lucky!
that would drive me loopy to hear david live talking at the other end of the line — THAT VOICE.
Good, great for you!
ronaldsf#315- Love, the post! “The critics’ approach fascinated me, because, at least for some genres of music like pop and dance music, they evaluated artists’ albums primarily in terms of their viability as commercial products. They focused on aspects of the music related to its commercial viability and only secondarily focused on aspects of musical artistry.”
I brought up a similar concept way up at#232 but not nearly as articulately. I don’t really object to this with regard to pop music though, because commercial viability is the nature of the pop-beast, isn’t it?
Jackryan, thanks for the article… I think I actually might have read it before I got infected with ODD… fascinating, but a sad commentary on factors that can drive an industry.
Ronaldsf, thanks for the insight on what critics look at when reviewing pop music… I’ve learned a lot since the night I saw David singing Shop Around!
Erin, you are so lucky to have the inside scoop on David! What many of us would give to have a chance to just “hang out” with that boy!
