Market Positioning

The album description in the Wal-Mart catalog gives us a unique insight into the marketing strategy in place for David. It was in all likelihood not intended to be published as-is, but rather the result of a lazy or overworked Wal-Mart publishing arm that didn’t bother to re-write the distributor release from the label. Here’s an excerpt:
A series of multi-layered marketing and media campaigns will be implemented in the coming months to assure a chart topping album release. The primary target demographic of teen and tween girls will be reached through a series of high school and cultural initiatives the brand Archuleta as every girl’s “best friend,” “all-American crush” and “future heartthrob.” A secondary demographic of parents will be reached by emphasizing Archuleta’s natural talent as “inspirational,” “genuine” and “refreshing.” The week of release media campaign will include a series of live performances and appearances on morning and late night television programs, and Archuleta will perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, post-release.
Although the copy might be tailored specifically to Wal-Mart and similar retailers who expect to be selling to particular demographics, the positioning seems nevertheless to be quite narrow, and makes me wonder if Jive really does understand what they have in David. Perhaps his producers know, but one wonders if that knowledge has been translated to Marketing.
On the one hand, David has plenty of time to evolve his positioning to reflect the true depth and breadth of his work and the nature of his diversified appeal; on the other hand, there’s a risk in getting pigeon-holed as a teen heartthrob (even if it’s distinguished as a “future” heartthrob–that modifier sounds suspiciously like the result of a David-driven negotiation to me…!). Such narrow-casting may well make it tougher to transition to broader, more “serious” markets down the line.
In the language of the current political climate, appealing to the base has limited value. Those constituents will show up anyway. Jive would be better advised to establish a broad base of appeal for David–one that indeed reflects current reality more accurately–right from the get-go.
Rascal: I think Jive should hire a team of notingdavid as the marketing force behind David. You already have a group of experts: wise writers, graphic designers, journalists, ArchuFBI, even a now famous Dr. Silverfox.
Let’s go for it!
At appearances this week, 95 percent of the attendees are female, ages 10-22. That’s all the marketers see -- Who could blame them for trying to position David in the places where that group will see him?
There are only two ways that Jive would could know that a broader appeal for David could exist:
1. Based strictly on the broad nature of the material on his album.
2. From surfing fan sites like this one.
The fact they mentioned the “secondary demographic” at all — that’s us, BTW — is a little encouraging.
This part is funny: A secondary demographic of parents will be reached by emphasizing Archuleta’s natural talent as “inspirational,” “genuine” and “refreshing.” -- How about adding “exceptional” and “sophisticated”? Anybody got some other more fitting adjectives?
sorry, meant to say notingdaviders.
On a more serious note, David is a natural star. His fanbase is not driven by trends, looks (well, maybe some are, haha), or marketing campaigns.
He does need good managers, producers, marketers, etc., to make himself known to the poor souls oblivious to the DA wonder. Better said, they, the poor souls, need those experts but he does not need them to become a star.
Walmart and others alike will quickly find out that he is clearly not just another heartthrob. The Archuleta will prove it, and we will be there to tell a ‘told you so’ story, and it will be fun. And maybe, Rascal, your dream will come true and all the original fans will get a solo concert, and I will fly down too. You betcha!
On Caseydog’s question, I think that they should not be only using the word “parents,” as I know many singles and non-parent couples (like me!) who are fans.
I find the marketing strategy to be quite interesting. It doesn’t surprise me; I’m sure that marketing departments develop strategies for every new star, or any star trying to recreate or transform their image.
I’m listening to the first Pittsburgh interview; interesting! I wish that the DJ’s would let him finish his question responses, though.
Freo, the interview in Pittsburgh is pretty good. The radio crew obviously loves David. Folks, go listen to it here:
http://fansofdavid.com/
The Pittsburgh interview is amazing — the DJs are obviously enthralled with David. Yes, it would be nice if they would just let him give his usual rambling (and so endearing) responses to their questions. Just love what the lady DJ had to say “David you are the youngest person in this room and the biggest gentleman”.
How interesting that he loves to play lacrosse. Does everyone know this is the official national sport of Canada, eh? (no, not hockey). Then again, David loves street hockey too.
All these interviews are being done so well by David. Go Big D!
Has anybody else noticed that, when asked how he’s doing, David’s standard response seems to be, “Doin’ pretty well.” I love it! He manages to be quite positive, but in a reserved and credible way.
When I saw that posted at the Walmart site, I was LOL cosI agree Rascal — somebody was probably too sleepy to see that that should have been for internal consumption only or just didn’t know any better. I actually feel that it should be taken down.
Normally,I would agree with you that the positioning, as indicated, looks narrow. However, am reminded that you once dubbed our David as the rebel during the Idol journey. Given this, I take Jive’s leaked positioning (Haha, not only songs are leaked eh?) to be aiming for the early wins. This concept is very important if one is introducing something different or effecting changes.
David as the true rebel requires a paradigm shift with a market steeped in materialism, opts or is conditioned to choose form over substance and that thrives on shock-factor. This ties in nicely with what Kizzi shared in the previous thread re the insights & principles of Tipping Point by Gladwell. (Am glad you got interested to re-visit Gladwell Kizzi!)
Change takes us out of our comfort zone. That’s why it is difficult to sell. But not impossible. So the traditional marketing approach which targets the mainstream majority (64% of the market -- remember the bell curve?) won’t work. We need the Mavens, the Connectors & the Salesmen — the Early Adopters (13.5% of market) to establish the early wins. And if sustained enough, will TIP the market to accept the change being introduced. That’s the Law of the Few at work.
In the entertainment industry, the young ones are the Early Adopters. Meanwhile, the young once in us serve as the Innovators (2.5% of market) -- haha! Bet you guys like that eh?:) And just to tie this in with the discussion on DJs & radio stations — they are both Innovators & Early Adopters -- so their role in marketing The Archuleta is significant.
I hope I didn’t bore you with this academic-sounding post.
Now I know where AI got the swaybot idea!

This is a closer shot of DA’s high school performance of “I’ll Be”. According to Snarkies, this was David’s 1st song during the San Diego audition. That was never talked about before, right?
Who’s really surprised by this marketing plan? I’m just grateful they even recognize a “secondary” demographic, even if narrowly construed as “parents” -- and even though many of us aren’t “parents” (myself included), we are that particular group that does describe David as “inspirational,” “genuine” and “refreshing,” so it’s not too far off.
Yay! David is going to be singing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade! Will it be “Crush” or a second single, sure to be released the day his album drops?
Rascal, you’re the marketing guru, but isn’t it true that marketing campaigns usually follow established trends rather than setting new ones? So the narrow positioning you rightly point out doesn’t surprise me.
As you’ve mentioned before, David is such an unprecedented talent that they’re probably going to have to invent new marketing models to be able to keep pace with his exploding popularity. Let’s hope they at least try.
I remember seeing a comment over at EW (in those sad days before I discovered ND and kept beating my head against the wall trying to defend David over there) from a recording industry marketing pro who said something like “David Archuleta is not marketable in today’s music industry.” What’s the emoticon for a big fat raspberry?
LOL --another vintage-David reaction:
“I’m just going to draw some shorts on her.”
(credit to Shabee of Snarkies)
Someone gave David a gift in a bag from some store. The girl in a pic on the bag had a really short skirt on. He looked at it…kind of did a double take and said:
“I’m just going to draw some shorts on her… I’m weird, I know.

Gotta love David! Substance over form, always
The label marketing info is all over the fan sites now. If it was not intended to be public, I wouldn’t want to be the person who released it. I will be using the writing in my class later this semester. It’s a good behind-the-scenes peak at marketing.
A longer version of Angels has leaked:
http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=581678
I don’t know anything about marketing strategies, all I know is David’s album will do very well. Then when he performs at all the Jingle Balls he will most assuredly gain many more fans…reason? Do you all know who David will be appearing with? Natasha Bedingfield, Ne Yo, Jesse Mccartney, Gavin Degraw, Colbie Caillet, to name a few. You can bet the ones who are going to the concerts to see one of the other acts will come out with a huge appreciation for David..They will see for themselves that he is the REAL DEAL! And that will generate more album sales. I see the album selling almost as well as CRUSH in the first couple of weeks, will peak, then will have a surge in sales after each Jingle concert. After listening to the clips of those few songs AND Angels, I see this album going GOLD for sure. I’m no expert in marketing, I just know good music..This album has ” a little bit of this and a little bit of that” something for everyone with love! Is our David a MAGIC MAN, or what?? JIVE struck gold with our Golden Boy!
The new “Angels” leak is the 2nd half of the song.
I combined them together, but there’s still a little gap in the middle where there’s a little music missing:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/rmnilwldowk/David Archuleta -- Angels EXTENDED ALBUM PREVIEW.mp3
Oh my heck… being posted at fansites is inevitable… but to remain in that WalMart site is another matter. Even if belatedly, it should be taken down.
meantime, get ready with more tissues please-- ANGELS longer version. No longer a snippet
http://www.mediafire.com/?mtdmyrj0tzq
I think Wal-Mart should take it down, too. Someone should tell the label’s marketing people or his manager.
This ia a converstion David had with fans about the demos we heard
From Mari: she captured it at the Milwaukee pizza party. David discusses “My Hands” and “Touch My Hand” (I’m not sure “ALTNOY” was in the conversation here), and the issue of overproduction:
“I like My Hands how…it was better than the rest. [I think this is what he says here; thanks, barbs!] But I like the demo for “Touch My Hand” better actually. It’s more simplified. You could just hear it. It was mainly just the beat and the voice, and so it was kinda cool.”
And about the subject of the music overpowering his voice…being overproduced: he agrees and says “I don’t have control over that.”
Interesting! So David thinks “My Hands” is better, but prefers the “Touch My Hand” demo version over the other demo versions. This accentuates how different the final cut can sound from the demo cuts that we’ve heard so far.
It concerns me that David doesn’t have much control over the final (at least vocal) mix. But still, Jive isn’t exactly murdering his voice, and I give them the benefit of the doubt as to what holds over better on radio. The songs overall sound great so far.
Here’s the 3-minute “Angels” on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3dur6g-wog
Ronaldsf, you rock, thanks! I thought the same thing about his comment about the final mix, but here, that voice, that VOICE! (I’m so glad I’m “working” from home today, no mascara to worry about!!)
I don’t think it’s unusual for a young artist like David to not have control over the final project. Another young artist I listen to is Butterfly Boucher, and she working to get released from her contract because of lack of control. But it sounds like Jive has given David more control that usual in some aspects.
jackryan… thanks for the “I’ll be” link…I’d not watched that clip in awhile, and the drawing shorts on the gift bag, just precious!
thanks ronaldsf for the longer “angels”. “sob”
TOfan…put it on repeat and cry all day… it’s ok, that’s what I keep telling myself.
Wow, his vocal is really buried in that Angels mix. Not likin’ it.
So the owner of my agency comes in to my office at the end of the song with a grim look on his face and shaking his head. I’m like, “What?” He’s says, “If you wanna rock out you’ll have to put on headphones.”
Rock out?! Ha ha!! Go David!
Rascal, since you mentioned about his voice being buried…I have noticed myself many times…well every time LOL…how when I listen to Crush I turn it up very loud, something I normally do not do, just to be able to hear that smooth sexy voice of his. He does not need all the loud music to cover up flaws in his voice…cause he has no flaws!!!
rascal..In my office, I DO wear headphones and I’m told to stop with the foot tapping and chair sqeaking when I’m “swaying” to David’s voice & music & I don’t even realize I’m doing it! Haha!
As for David not having “control” over the final mixes now..This is just his first album!! Patience is the key..for he will have all the control when he becomes the PRODUCER of his own music and it’ll be sooner than we think..I have a VERY GOOD feeling about this album..a very calm, good feeling…
At 1:02 in longer version Angels has David harmonizing with David — more of that would be sweet. And his voice could definitely come further forward--a little more of the strings (are they electronic?) and less crashing and crescendo-ing on top of The Voice. I wonder if they’re done mixing. Hm, we’ll see in 18 days, 12 hours……
That’s funny about the marketing strategy OOps! Wal-Mart, gag. I’m so conflicted--I *do not support* that store in any way, so how am I going to get the bonus track. It’s a dilemma.
ronaldsf -- I just headed over to idolforums to see what you had to say about this longer cut (love the musical analysis on that thread), and your wrapup is a stunner:
“If the first verse is David sitting alone in the stained-glass church, then the second verse is the angels (perhaps a choir?) joining him. The bridge is when they lift him above the clouds. The final chorus is when he is in heaven, soaring through the air.”
GAH! You nailed it! Beautiful.
hey highervibe … I don’t do Walmart either,, but I understand that the bonus track is a must have that David co-wrote…. Dilemma indeed.
I would love something on the Album accapella , how sweet that would be? Like SF said we need to be patient… I guess
David himself that none of the leaks right now are the final mix. Chenson has expressed confidence that some of the more glaring problems will be corrected before the album is released. However, like folks have said his voice is somewhat buried, too, even in the final mix of Crush.
My previous MP3 donwload doesn’t work anymore, in my effort to substitute it with a new version LOL. I’m a perfectionist, so I tried to eliminate the gap in the middle. There’s actual no missing music I think -- it’s just that it fades out. Here’s a working link:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/dinjmzztdai/David_Archuleta_Angels_EXTENDED_ALBUM_PREVIEW.mp3
Highervibe #29, yeah as you can see was super-anticipating the final cut of “Angels.” As for the mix, I have mixed feelings about it -- I think there’s a certain pop appeal to the way they added an effect to his voice, and I think in a way the song DOES need to “rock out” a bit. But I don’t see why his voice can’t soar clearly AND have the above be true. Maybe I’m too hard to please? LOL
I am not happy that the bridge is not in this version. I stated over at IDF that this is the first time I clearly disagree with a choice on the album. However, I don’t know if this is David’s doing -- if he didn’t want to include the bridge then why did he perform it 53 times during the tour?
Or maybe this is an early edit -- the instruments DO seem to be building up toward the bridge at the end of the 2nd chorus.
But bridge or no bridge, this is still a stunning performance on a stunning song, and for the newbies it will be a standout on the album.
We are secondary, people. Secondary.
Ok, I’ll shake that off. {{{{{{{{}}}}}}}
I love the teaser from RateTheMusic but am not as thrilled with the 2nd half. Reminded me a little of the studio cuts from AI -- still beautiful and all but there is more, there is just more so probably we didn’t hear all yet as you suggest ronaldsf. I guess am waiting for him to “whip out the Tulsa.”
Thanks for pointing out ronaldsf that there is still work to be done -- I heard David call it a Master Mix (?) I think on one of his interviews.
Mostly lurking but with regard to this “Angels”, although it is beautiful, I love so much certain powerful parts from the tour (and even the Idol stage performance version -- the way he sings “let’s their WINGS UNFOLD”) and I really miss the bridge part. I want the powerful Tulsa Angels with all those wonderful runs and nuances and the haunting feeling that I hear in those versions. I can not, however, ever get enough of David singing this song any way he chooses to sing it.
Doesn’t my IDOL look scrumpcious in MOVIE STAR sunglasses!! hahaha!
Omgosh, he is so cute in the knit cap! Go to FOD and see! So adorable and cool at the same time! And the MOVIE STAR sunglasses too! Yes, scrumptious!
Before I forget, beebee, thank you for the HUG (I can’t do the brackets the way you do! No one can!) from the last thread. Things are a bit better and I’m going on vacation tomorrow! But definitely taking my laptop with me. 9-10 days without David news would not be advisable for anyone with severe ODD. That’s all I gotta say.
I’m not sure if this strategy represents their long term plans for David or just this album. They may indeed have a concept of David’s potential but may view this album as simply the american Idol payoff. In other words this will be a very radio friendly album geared towards David’s prmary audience. I think they realize that true fans of David’s from American Idol (of any age or gender) will probably buy the album. The strategy for this particular album may be geared towards new fans gained through the single and various TV apperances. It stands to reason that Jive would market this album toawards young people. David himself has expressed his desire to record music that would appeal to his age group.
vermeer..have a great time on vacation..and DO take your laptop..or you’ll be PAYING people for use of theirs! And you can stay in touch, too. Vacation or not, David will still be the focus of your life, won’t he? David, look what you dun did to us poor souls!!
silverfoxe, thanks! David is embedded in my heart so wherever I go, he’s going with me!! My husband has accepted that!! haha!
Just listened to the radio interview on 106.1 KISS FM and I feel so happy hearing his voice, his laugh and that picture of him laughing is so perfect. He is just SO ADORABLE!! I almost want to cry I’m so happy!!
OK, maybe I’ve been spoiled by all of David’s Angels renditions on tour, but after listening to the extended version, all I can say is:
WHERE IS THE BRIDGE?! WHERE IS THE BRIIIIDDDGGGEEE?!
I love the bridge. That whole “yeah yeah yeah” breakdown? Argh!
That better be included in the final version. That’s all I’m saying.
DABeliever My take is that it is a short-term strategy-- to establish an early win.
Kizzi Secondary, yes but Innovators must be more to your liking- yes?
Silver on #27 “… control when he becomes the PRODUCER of his own music…” LOOOOOVE how you think! Didn’t I say you were brilliant!!!
ronaldsf MUWAH!!! for all the things you do for David
And hey! Look what I found! The 2nd ballad listed in David’s album! I have a veddy good feeling about this:) veddy, veddy good

Collegemom, #34, I’m with you on “let their wings UNFOLD,” especially on the Ford Day Angels. Chills and tears every time. Also, with just David’s voice and the piano on that version, it’s tough to beat the pure beauty there.
In this leaked clip, I did love the way, even with the overproduction, he changed things up, so subtly yet powerfully.
And WalMart terrifies me. I end up walking in and walking out it’s so chaotic and huge and… WalMart. But for you David, I will face my fear, heck, I would walk over flaming coals at the gates of WM!!
Looks like they are working on his website. Perhaps a sneak peak?

Pittsburgh interview!
He’s as cute as ever trying out some local “Pittsburghese.” ha ha

I’m starting to believe that this marketing plan was intended specifically for Wal-Mart execs to convince them to carry the CD.
Excerpt from the Wall Street Journal (4/27/07, pg B1).
“Today, many music industry execs agree, the big boxes (e.g, walmart) have become the new tastemakers. Even as CD sales fall, their choices dictate which CDs are widely available on store shelves across the U.S.” The article goes on to state how Wal-Mart has reduced its space devoted to music by 20%, they will not carry albums bearing “parental advisory”, and “up-and-coming pop, rock or hip hop acts are unlikely to be welcome until they’re proven sellers”.
In Advertising Age, May 19, 2008, vol. 79, pg. S2,
Azoff’s relationship with Wal-Mart is discussed. In brief, Azoff has paid Wal-Mart for placement of CDs in “strategic locations at checkout counters in the chain’s 6,500 stores for impulse buys.”
I’m so far behind on this blog but I thank several of you for providing more info on the song “Running” in the previous discussion.
Freo Finally! Some movement on his official site!
are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet?
Very funny, JR. Ebonyangel, thanks for the new info. It definitely puts the marketing language in larger perspective.
jackryan..OF COURSE, PRODUCER!! Look, David LIVES for his music..it’s his passion. how did someone phrase it..”music is his lover”. The name of the game now is money. Lots of money for Jive, Azoff and David. It may take a first & second album to get there but I just can’t see David being satisfied until he can produce his own music. It will be the culmination of all his hard work, and his family’s sacrifices. It will happen.Every step David takes now brings him closer to that reality. He’s not in it for fame & fortune, or material possessions, he’s in it for LOVE & PASSION, so there is no way he will be denied!
SF- love and passion…that’s what i’m in it for….
OK, new video everyone! David is busy checking out a scrapbook of magazine clippings of himself. Get ready to die laughing!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcS3TnAnd-g
Some highlights:
1. Someone off camera tells him to get moving, he apologizes and keeps on doing what he’s doing.
2. See what he says about the Miley Cyrus rumors.
3. His random ramblings.
It’s classic David stuff. Enjoy!
OK. I was beginning to think I was alone in what I thought of the 2nd part of Angels.
I absolutely LOVE the 1st part, I was so emotional and I couldn’t get enough of it. This 2nd part (and I’m really loath to say it) reminds me of a mix AI/Jessica Simpson from DWTS. **Ducking for cover*** I don’t like it at all. There’s no drama to it, feels very restrained, It doesn’t fly, very little runs.
What I loved about the tour version most was the 2nd verse, it soared without restraint, and the bridge. OMGosh. They were my favorite parts. I could not get enough of it. I had hoped the tour version would be on the album not AI and definately NOT Simpson. It was a crime what she did to the song.
That magazine clipping video is the funniest thing!! It is hilarious. Check it out. He even takes a little quiz about himself. He comments about the one that said he didn’t have any friends in school (I remember reading that one actually). About Miley: “She sat by me and I didn’t do anything.”
“She sat by me!”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Thanks for posting this HG!
“She sat by me!” is probably the best part! But there are so many moments in this one.
Seriously, my cheeks hurt from grinning/laughing so hard.
Probably his funniest video ever!
pouncer84, if Angels was leaked now, I hope it’s to get some feedback. Is there a way to insist that they put the bridge back?
Because that needs to be put back in, period. David soars on this song, and we don’t need a restrained version for the album. He needs to unleash himself!
HG- thanks for the little present tonight…loved the video, thanks for finding it…
HG -- what was leaked is not the whole song, so I am praying the bridge is in. I have a feeling though that what will be in the album is the restrained version. That’s how he did it at Ford.
Goodness, when I close my eyes I can hear/see David going full force, letting it fly. Its just glorious what he did in Tulsa (my personal fave) and even in parts of LA.
We’ll know for sure in less than 3 weeks. I also hope they tone down the music a bit so we can hear DJA better. I buy an album to hear the artist not the music.
HAHA..David doesn’t see himself in all the teen mags! Doesn’t even know he’s in them!
About ANGELS..If he had unleashed all the power & glory of the “Tulsa” version, It would over-power all the other songs on the album, don’t cha think? As much as I loved the other demos and CRUSH..there is almost no way to describe the way David sang ANGELS on tour. It
would, in my humble opinion be the best song on the album if he sang it just like Tulsa, i wonder who’s decision it was to even have ANGELS on the album. It was a pretty bold decision because of exactly what we are not liking about it. Look at all the people who contributed to the album, song writers & producers. I don’t think they want a “cover’ song, however great, to out-do their own work. They saw this brilliant singer who can & will make their songs & music come alive with his VOICE. So maybe ANGELS was OK”d by the PTB only if he toned it down a bit..I know that sounds cra-zeh, but why else would David have recorded it without the bridge we got chills over and loved so much? Maybe that’s why the second part was “leaked”. maybe if they get negative feedback, he’ll do it over if?? I dunno..I’m just askin’ ?
jackryan4da: Yes, I love innovators. I am not too good at following.
Thanks for the link HG: The video is a treasure trove. David is so happy and he does LOVE his FANS!
yeap! I too miss that bridge. Like HG said, I want to hear him ‘unleashed’, soaring, unrestrained.
But I must have patience. If it’s not in this cd it will be in the next. I am willing to wait.
And I agree with SF, his ultimate music goal must be to PRODUCE his own music, and even help other young artists too.
patience patience patience…..only 18 days more …patience……patience… patience…………………………..
I can’t take it any longer….are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? jackryan please heeeelp!
Silverfoxe, when I saw that shopping pic, I immediately changed my Facebook avatar to that very image. I see you are doing the same for here. I love that pic — it’s a gem!
about Angels, all the restraint, and all of the overprocessing….we’re spoiled already (yay for us) but this way the albums entitled: “David Archuleta-Live” and “David Archuleta-Unplugged” will really be a treat, pass the defib…
happy..David Archuleta-Live..performances from his solo concerts…what dreams are made of!! Soon..soon…soon!!
…then we’ll have:
David Archuleta: Burning Love
David Archuleta: Christmas classics
David Archuleta: Golden records volume 4
David Archuleta: Heart and soul album
David Archuleta: Live at Madison Square Garden
David Archuleta: Live at Carnegie Hall
David Archuleta: Number One hits
David Archuleta: One Stage
and
David Archuleta: A touch of Platinum
SF: maybe he’ll be wearing stylish belts on many of these album covers….
typo:
David Archuleta: On Stage
After seeing/hearing/melting over so many incredible live versions of Angels, I think any studio recording is bound to disappoint.
David gets supercharged with joyful electrons when he performs in front of an audience and I know it’s too soon to hope for a live album next … but aw, wouldn’t it be pure bliss?
Greetings! fellow partakers of all that is David.
I am just in and out today. BUT for all of us who like to indulge from time to time, I present you with this little morsel: didn’t know if you’d seen it?
(just a little clue, how about those ** hands** in his songs!!)
BABY HOLD ON!!! Try to sleep after this if you can. Sweet DREAMS!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ngbo_xgp7o
Silverfoxe and happy — must have been on the same wavelength!
happy! “David Archuleta Live”?! “David Archuleta Unplugged”?! Pass the defribillator and the respirator! Just bring the gurney!! I’m gonna need to lie down…
ram- more than a morsel, thanks.
ronaldsf: thank you for putting the leaks together
HG: thank you for the clip
Loved the ‘…she sat by me!’
So David. That was so funny
happy, vemeer: I think I was the last one with the defib. There and it comes with brownies, and a soft blanket for vemeer (that is if you’re still lying down)
SF -- I totally see your point and agree with it. Angels is in a league of its own, also because we’ve heard it so many times. I wonder what Imagine would’ve been like on tour. What about this line-up of Angels, Imagine, and WYSYLM together on tour. Oh lordy, the venues would need EMS at each stop.
I believe David wanted Angels on the album and I have a feeling the bridge will be held for the tour. I also believe that there will be a big difference between him performing the tour songs and the album.
I think it was Dean that said something like David comes alive in front of an audience and that its hard to capture that feeling in a recording.
panamom- vermeer needed the oxygen too, please have the necessary resuscitation equipment at the ready…who among us is the nurse? I forget. Is there a doctor in Rascal’s house? Let’s put him/her in charge…any delay may kill us
happy: I see you are back. I thought I was too late.
Hope vermeer got the oxygen on time. Are you there?!!!
Well, it’s good night from me.
happy #64, I LOVE your post!! And don’t forget these:
David Archuleta: Jazz classics (jazz standards, and songs like “What a Wonderful World”)
David Archuleta: Contigo en la DIstancia (Spanish album)
David Archuleta: Remixed (dance mixes!)
David Archuleta: Unplugged
David Archuleta: Christmas Album #2 (there’s so many he would knock out of the park!)
Revisiting David Archuleta (remakes of modern and classic pop songs, including “Crazy” and “Imagine”)
I see what people are saying about saving “the Tulsa” for his live performances, but I think that’s a different question from including the bridge.
This is what I wrote on IDF about why I think the bridge will actually be in the final cut. (I hope I’m not wrong!)
—-
I think it WAS edited out. I think the second-to-last “I’m loving angels instead” (that starts high and goes down kind of bluesy) I think is the vocal at the actual end of the THIRD chorus. Then you hear the “bum bum bum bum” of the instruments, which would be like the transition from the SECOND chorus to the bridge.
And when, since when, have you heard David hold back in the final chorus on the line “wherever it may take me?”. He has ALWAYS done something interesting there by raising a note higher, since he was FIFTEEN! He doesn’t do that in the 2nd chorus in this version.
And as someone pointed out, almost every song has 3 choruses nowadays. This only has two.
(The consensus over on IDF is that they want the bridge too! I really hope Jive takes fan opinions into account, and that this is a reason why they leaked it.)
The hands, the hands, the hands, the hands, the hands, the hands, the hands the ha…Sorry..I was stuck thinking about David’s HANDS..no not the song. his hands on the video!!
happy…stylish belts?? And jeans? What about a SHINY SUIT…just kidding!! he can wear anything his little ole heart desires..But can you picture david when he does his “Unplugged Live” on TV in a few years wearing a black outfit, (not leather) or all white that would contrast with his black hair that he wears longer & spikey!! We have sooo much to look forward to!! That’s if he doesn’t kill us softly one by one…HERE LIES DEE, SHE LOVED DAVID DEEPLY..THE DEFIB GOT TO HER TOO LATE, but she went with a smile on her face! RIP DEE!
ronaldsf: now this is a thread I could run with all night…., what joy!, what possibilities!….but alas, gotta work tomorrow, goodnight all, thanks for the fun.
Hey all!
About Rascal’s post -- while the positioning may seem narrow, it is in line with what we have heard so far from the album. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the songs, but there hasn’t been a “message” song leak, or one with David and a simple acoustic background (piano or guitar) and a haunting melody or lyric (like “Crazy” or the Merrick Christensen songs). While these are my favorite styes for him personally, I love his pop songs too and am OK with him/his label trying to reinforce his popularity among tweens/teens. Really, this is the surest route at this point for David’s album to do as well as it needs to for him to have more artistic control on his second. The other interesting development I’ve noticed -- David and his music being described by many (a recent blogger, Blender mag, MTV) as a “guilty pleasure”. I feel this is a way for too-cool people to admit liking his music. This has been happening a lot lately…another sign that no matter how they want to target his album, he really does have mass appeal and will in the end transcend narrow marketing strategies. All signs indicate David’s album is going to do very, very well!!!
SF, you’re so funny!! I love your new avi by the way!
I want David in FORMAL WEAR! He’s so sex-ay!
LittleMushroom #80, I share Rascal’s concerns while I am also VERY optimistic about his commercial success. Recognition will come! David has too much talent for it not to!!
and never ever forget:
David Archuleta: The Best Of — triple platinum, anyone?
panamon The only help I can offer is the mantra I picked up a number of threads ago: “I need not see or hear David in person. I need not see or hear David in person. I need not see or hear David in person. need not see or hear David in person. I need not see or hear David in person.”
SF- going to bed, saw your last post…can’t let the black leather suit go unmentioned- there may be only one man to EVER LOOK THAT HOT IN A BLACK LEATHER SUIT…..
How about:
David Archuleta: Palm to Heart — all his original compositions and plays on the Arch Angels’ signal!
In terms of cover design, there could be a mirroring effect cos it should actually be From Heart to Palm when referring to his compositions. Haha
am liking this thread!
well there was one other, but it may have been before your time..Elvis in his “comeback special” looked mighty fine all in black leather..HOWEVER, David looks mighty fine in everything including the “the suit” and especially the formal attire he wore on AI..gorgeous! He will nevah hav ta resort ta wearin’ them sequined thangs Elvis wore! No, no nevah! Just a pair of uh..snug jeans & belt will do jus’ fine! Oh and a shirt too.
ronaldsf/thanks for giving us Angels and working so hard to do so. I’ve really enjoyed listening to it and reading everyone’s comments. At first I was thrilled at hearing this “electronic” version, all the strings/percussion, etc., but noticed something was missing. What I was missing was the powerful, pure tone of David’s voice. While I’m the first to admit that I love harmony and lots of the orchestral element to a song (i.e. Elton John), all I really need when listening to David perform is HIS voice. It’s like his voice IS the instrument. The other thing I wanted to ask you is -- when you refer to the “bridge” in “Angels”, is it the yeah, yeah, yeah, etc. etc. that he performed during the tour? (I’m not a musician, just a rabid music fan, so I don’t know alot of the buzz words, bear with me!!) Thanks Ron, and again for working so hard for all of us………..
Ronald, forgot to say how the yeah yeah runs in the middle of Angels were to die for, and I’d be disappointed if they weren’t in the final version. Do you agree?
panamon thank yoooou for the soft blanket and the defib and the brownie. This is heaven… where is our angel David?… Oh yes I need the respirator too… I hope you and happy will find me tomorrow morning rescusitated and good to go again. Great conversation going here tonight but I’m so tired, I was taking short breaks peaking in but now I can finally go home (past 9 pm PT). Haven’t even had dinner yet so that brownie sounds sooo goood….
Ronald..formal wear it IS!! I hope as David gets older, he will havehis own signature style. He always looked very
“casually classy” on AI. Now while he’s still a teen, he may wear jeans & a nice graphic T when he performs on the Jingle Balls..but who knows? At least I hope he can wear whatever he’s comforatble with. For sure, he may never have to buy another graphic T in his life…he must have been given a thousand T’s over the course og the AI tour! Ah well, we all have our hopes & dreams for David but those lists of albums and appearances aren’t really a stretch or far fetched. Our David is a rising Star!!
sorry ’bout the typos..I’m bushed! gotta say g’nite all, and of course..
David..Buenas noches, sweet dreams, be safe & secure in our love for you always! CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!
Loved the new video of David checking out his photos in the scrapbook. Taking the quiz to see if “I get to me!”!
He gave that girl a memory to hold onto for life. Just talking to her like a friend.
Also Ronaldsf: I have never said this but always thought it- thanks for the Angels Tulsa remix. It is by far my favorite performance and what an amazing job you did editing the best parts.
Hopefully my new avatar shows up. New grandson Adam!
Re the missing bridge of Angels — if we go by the clocking of the Tulsa ver minus all the extraneous factors, the whole song is 4 minutes long. The much beloved bridge is a full 20 secs
So if we compare that with ronaldsf’s extended version, and assuming that the leaked version is still not the whole enchilada and would include the bridge, the final album cut should be not be less than 3:26 long.
Let’s hope for the best.
#87 chickee, there may be a more “scientific” definition for bridge out there, but I usually think of a unique section in the middle of a song that precedes the final chorus. Most pop songs are a variation on the following structure: verse 1 -- chorus -- verse 2 -- chorus -- bridge -- chorus. Some songs don’t have a bridge.
You’re right -- the bridge in Angels is the “yeah yeah yeaahhh” part in the middle. There are new lyrics in the original Robbie Williams, and it’s David adding his own vocals to it. Jackryan, If the bridge is added, there would be a repeat of the chorus, so the song would clock in at around 4 min.
Betsy #92, I’ve gotten thanks from so many people for the Tulsa video! It was a labor of love. congratulations on your new grandson!
Silverfoxe #90, I would love seeing David dress more like he’s in GQ.
And why should we wait before doing that?!
#94 thanks Ronald, ok then, let’s bring on the bridge, please, please, the powers that be, bring it on!!!!
Oh whoops in #93 I meant to say “There are *no lyrics in the Robbie Williams version”
And actually, there aren’t any lyrics per se in David’s version either! Robbie just doesn’t SING in his version.
Yes, chickee! Bring it on!!!
Hey everyone! OMG, I had another nightmare! Hope you don’t mind my sharing, because, again, it was with David Archuleta.
See, I found myself falling asleep early, especially because earlier tonight, my cable server was down (no TV, no internet). So I was dreaming I was on a Caribbean island staying in a really nice pleasant room, perhaps in a hotel, instead of visiting relatives like I usually do. I decided to take a nap, and next thing you know, I see David Archuleta in my room. He’s all pleasant, then all of a sudden, he starts seducing me, climbing onto my bed and trying to get on top of me.
Immediately, I knew this couldn’t be David because he just wouldn’t behave like that. And in an instant, I felt it was an evil spirit trying to get into me. (Yes, this is part of my spiritual belief). I tried to scream but I couldn’t make any sound, so I started praying, and after praying, my scream came out, and a bunch of elderly women and one young woman burst into my room. David was no longer there, and I was suddenly free. They were all comforting me, and I told them how this evil spirit tried to make me believe he was David Archuleta so he could seduce me.
And then I woke up.
Good Lord! I am still shaking. It’s the wee hours of the morning, but I’m afraid to go back to sleep. So, I’ve got my TV on and I’m online. I need to find more of my innocent David clips to wipe out that nightmare from my mind.
I just knew that wasn’t my David. Have mercy!
HG, yikes!
Maybe this video will help you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rU2B_oMJtQ
Evil spirit be gone!
Thanks, Ronald. That video had some of my favorite funny moments -- “Ohmigosh, Ashley” and all that! ha ha
Actually, catching up on this post ws helpful too. The server must have already gone down by the time you all played the “name that future album” game. No one has mentioned a “Be Still My Soul: David Archuleta with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir” album (because he does need to make an album with sacred songs, and with that other famous Utah musical icon at some point).
Betsy, congratulations on your grandson! What a cutie!
Love and comfort is this place. I’ve calmed down quite a bit, especially since it’s already past the witching hour (anyone ever saw The Exorcism of Emily Rose? Yikes!).
Yeah, I know -- I’m this huge contradiction of intellect and old-wives superstitious belief in the supernatural, but it’s what Walt Whitman would say: “Do I contradict myself? Very well that I contradict myself. I am multitudinous and contain volumes.”
Anyway, hope you give me some credit. After all, some David Archuleta impersonator tried to rape me in a dream. Nuff said!
Oh HG, that was awful! Am glad that you have calmed down and that your connection is back. But you know, for some angels -- and am NOT naming names, ok! — being seduced by our man-child would be the uber dream!
I for one do not question superstitious beliefs. There are simply some things that are beyond our grasp. Things that don’t happen to me do not invalidate the experience of others. Of course, this, after exhausting all possible explanations. Am not the scary type but am not inclined to watch serious scary movies. I just don’t see the point.
However, I am almost tempted to tease you, you know! Boy,if I ever hear another reason to for any archie to get up in the middle of the night just to see David! Haha… I kid…. I kid only HG, ok?
Very funny, Jackryan! Like I need an excuse to wake up in the middle of the night for David (yep, I’m still up! Told ya, afraid to fall asleep -- at least, not until the daylight gets here, and I don’t have to work in the morning).
Anyway, I must explain something, my friend. I’d be lying if I didn’t think a seduction by our favorite man-child wouldn’t be an “uber dream” fantasy. Why else would some dark entity even try by taking on David’s likeness? But, here’s the thing.
I just got done watching his adorable “She sat by me!” video. Not gazing on his latest photo shoot, where he’s just rocking the jeans and piercing your soul with his gorgeous eyes. I was definitely in the “aww, he’s so adorable” phase of my O.D.D.
Not the stuff of seduction fantasy! So, when David appears in my hotel room, with his killer smile and his pleasantries, I was completely thrown off guard when he started the seduction routine. It just didn’t work with the child-like side of him that I had just witnessed before falling asleep.
That’s why it immediately tipped me off that it wasn’t David. And no sooner did I have that, “this is not David,” that I started thinking this person was something more sinister. Being in the Caribbean probably pushed me in that direction too.
I don’t know if any of you ever had that sensation, when sleeping, of feeling something on top of you that’s crushing the living daylights out of you, but that’s what it felt like with this David impersonator on top of me, squeezing the breath out of me. That’s why I tried to scream, couldn’t, then started praying.
I’ve had those kinds of sensations before, but this is the first time such a “thing” (entity, spirit, or I’m sure there’s a scientific term for that feeling even) took on a persona that I would have completely trusted.
I’m actually kind of angry with the impersonation, to be honest. In a previous post, I once said that, in my David dreams, David started becoming my symbol of comfort and safety, especially during a crisis mode.
Now, some entity subverted my symbol of safety through deception. What the heck? I really don’t appreciate this violation (on so many levels).
But, yeah, go ahead and tease. I can take it.
Congratulations Betsy. You’re grandson is adorable!
I’m not a fan of Walmart either. So I’m rather miffed that they were given the extra song. Hmm, looks like I may have to pre-order from their website, unless some other Archie comes up with a solution to this dilemma. Oh well.
Hello Gorgeous #97 Wow, what a scary situation. I too have had a similar dream. It was a couple of years ago, but I remember the sensations quite vividly. A very heavy presence and I just felt weighted down and helpless. Then an image of an angel appeared in my mind and I started thinking several times- if you are not of God then go away. And then the sensations ceased and I woke up. Funny how certain dreams stay with you. This one had a real creepy feel about it. (shudder- as I’m now winding down to go to bed. lol)
I’ve been really enjoying all these new interviews. Yeah, David has been so animated in them.
Vermeer- have a safe and fun holiday!
and Tofan #12 here’s your symbol for raspberry.
Good night everybody, or I should say- good morning! I’m always one step behind everyone else. haha -- Pax
You know I read many moons ago that evil spirits take the form of those you tend to trust. There is even a theory that the ghosts that we see of our loved ones are not actually them… but those of the evil spirits… make sense at some level, right?
And yeah, I am with you with indignation of such violation!
BTW, when the bunch of elderly women came into ur room, the “David” with you -- did he say: “But she sat by me!” Hah! if he didn’t that’s your final test that he is an impostor!
Oh yeah, one more thing I wanted to mention. It seems like there was a contest in Cincinnati, that whichever school gathered the most pennies would win a visit from David. The winning school is Seton High School which collected more than $3.000. What’s so funny is its an all girls school. I can imagine what that scene is going to look like.
David better be quick on his feet, have earplugs and bring extra bodyguards.
Lovely thread. So much to think about. Love girls school story. They chose the best young man to collect pennies for. I am thrilled he is a teen heart throb. What they just don’t realize he is a heart throb for everyone. Talent is talent.
I have listened to this “new” Angels so often it is seared into my brain. I love the “Tulsa Angels” also and wouldn’t change a note but I like when he changes things up. This one he uses his lower range more and each word just pops out at you. I wanted to read the words as he sang so went to a site and found a surprise. Look at the sidebar. David and Crush are number 9 in top artist and lyrics. Woooooo!!!! That probably mirrors his ratings elsewhere but how cool.
http://www.elyrics.net/read/r/robbie-williams-lyrics/angels-lyrics.html
My favorite phrase in this version that gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes is:
And as the feeling grows
She breathes flesh to my bones
I love when he harmonizes with anyone but especially with himself. I have total trust in David to make music I want to listen too. When he has total control of the final product it will be even greater. Jive will learn like we have to trust David.
His interviews have been such classics. David is a total package and a promoters dream. His parents and friends know how well they have been blessed, we fans certainly do also, now the rest just have to get on the roller coaster and we are off for a thrilling ride.
cutter12 -- An ALL GIRLS school?!! haha
I read that the area schools collected over $6k in milk jugs; this school collected almost half -- WOW, talk about a motivated student body. Anything for the chance of an ArchuGaze. LOL
I like all the grassroots activities David is engaging in. Probably the norm.
In the B96 Chicago radio interview I really was intrigued by David’s answer to the question about Imagine in Top 20.
He said he didn’t know how long he would be in the competition, he didn’t look at it as a competition song and he sang it to show why he loves music and that the song was just a good example of why he loves to sing and he guesses that people felt that.
Oh, yeah, David, we felt that!
Best comment yet by a DJ in a radio interview (B96):
“You are happy! I can feel the bubbles coming out of your body, man!”
The…”Lets their wings unfold” part…I LOVE in the Tulsa concert. I wish the music had of stopped at the end of the song when he repeats..”I’m loving Angles instead”, like in the AI tour and just let him soar at the end. I think they should put David in front of an audience when he recorded Angels…he thrives in front of people. It is like he feeds off their excitement and HIS wings unfold….GAHHH!!! Love this guy!!! LOL!! Having an ODD moment…forgive me haha!!
Good morning, everyone! I finally fell asleep around 5:32 am. Not quite daylight but it was close enough.
Jackryan wrote:
“BTW, when the bunch of elderly women came into ur room, the “David” with you -- did he say: “But she sat by me!” Hah! if he didn’t that’s your final test that he is an impostor!”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
Actually, no, he didn’t say that. He simply disappeared. See, an impostor!
Cutter12, that’s a great story about the ALL GIRLS high school. I can already hear the piercing screams. Hopefully, we’ll get some good footage on You Tube.
Opps I meant “I’m loving angels instead”, NOT angles!! HAHA!
Kizzi -- same interview. The Dj said “you really are an old soul, I feel like you sang to me in the womb or something”.
The dj feels it too, that comfort and goodness. Maybe he secretly lurks here!

Link to Cinci paper article about David’s performance at Seton. today
Betsy -- that is a great one too--I think it bets the bubbles comment. Thanks
Vermeer: just dropping by, but I am glad you are back. I was worried
Betsy: congrats on your the addition to your family
Jackryan4DA: I like your mantra.
HG: sorry you had that dream. I have had similar experiences in the past, and have my own ways of dealing with them. If you ever want to talk about that, let me know and we’ll email each other.
dma: loved all your comments. I love the part where the music stops and he sings ‘I’m loving angeeels insteaaaad’
That one has to be my absolutely favorite. Really makes me feel like I can sing, actually, it makes me wish that I could sing like him and sound as great. But no musical genes here.
Who thought October was going to be a long and boring month? school drives, name the next album game, come up with the better radio interview answers game, oh well, I could go on and on. Still, are we there yet?
Re his future release albums, I have to add that Latins are deeply romantic. Love songs will migrate and transcend borders.
I think once David starts singing in Spanish there is going to be a new dimension opening up for him.
He will definitely release more than one album in Spanish, and he will have to tour the biggest markets like Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and his mother’s country Honduras (of course), and Panama (just because I am here, of course hahaha), and from there Spain. And then Brasil would want him, and he will also have to visit all his fans in Asia (Malasia has some great teamarchie going on there), and then the rest of Europe would want a piece of our David.
Even if he is not singing in their native languages he will be big. Just look at one example Shakira, she is from Colombia, sings in Spanish love and dance songs, cracked into the US market and she is all over Europe now, like in Germany singing in Spanish and English. She is not my favorite singer, but her experience is just a sample of what could happen.
David will be around for a loooong time. Go Big D!
Okay!! Am I the only one here? Hello Hello Hello…Fine! I’ll be quite now.
Morning all!
HG..methinks you have to meet David..you, like me have way too many dreams of him and now you had a nightmare? Yup, he’s on your mind, concious and sub-concious 24/7..your mind will not rest til you come face to face. You are a very intelligent, educated woman who HAS been seduced by a young man whom you have never met, he’s taken over your heart & soul. That kind of seduction is very hard to control. I’m in no way talking about sexual seduction, even though it is very sensual due to the nature of his voice and beauty. Sounds to me like you don’t know, at times why you are so invested in time and thoughts to David. That he is so young and you watch the videos who brings that fact to you seems to comfort you in a way, but subconciously, at the same time you wonder, why then do I feel this way?
I see all the grown women with severe ODD who HAVE met David and have spent time, however short, with him and they come away still with ODD, but seem to be at peace with their ODD. Until you meet David, touch him, talk to him, he doesn’t seem REAL and you stay in this perpetual dream-state where David is the main character. You have to meet him. I did meet him, talked to him,, laughed with him..but I could not touch him, even though all around me, women were hugging him & touching him..I couldn’t..I was afraid I would be the one to disappear completely. To me he looked so familiar, like I already knew him sometime, somewhere. I felt at ease with him, but could not touch him. Weird, huh?
Anyway, that’s my take on your problema. Just call me Dr Silverfoxe..no charge. BTW, I had a totally different dream about David (and ALL of US here) last night. It was a good dream. I’ll post it later. I want to savor it myself for a while.
Panamom, I’d love to share! Email me: hobsjayceeh@yahoo.com.
Dr. Silverfoxe, thank you for the diagnosis. One day, I will get to meet him. The one time he came to my city on tour was the same time I was overseas on vacation, so maybe there’s that residual effect of missing him -- coming so close but the timing didn’t work out? But, yes, I agree -- he’s infiltrated my heart and soul, and I will have to meet him to make it real.
Of course, I have my own hypothesis as to why I had that awful dream last night. That was the first night I didn’t read your usual sign-off, wishing everyone (and David) sweet dreams. See what happens when I don’t get that wish?
Anyway, looking forward to your dream! Do share!
If you want a really good feeling this morning you need to check out fans of david’s halloween montage. It is fantastic. What a great start to my Friday.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAvCDnpAQc0
Panamom: I count Argentina as another of my obsessions. I have spent time there the past two winters (summers down there!) and absolutely love the people and culture. I will probably be going again in February.
Anyway, I could see David being very successful there. Idol is shown there, of course, so he is already somewhat known. In my observations, good looks are paramount for Argentines (high rate of plastic surgery), so we know David will grab the public’s attention that way. And the release of a song in spanish? That will give them all ODD!
dma #105, I LOVE that part too!
And as the feeling grows
She breathes flesh to my bones
Also, although I they think they usually use too many studio effects on his voice, I LOVE the placement of an effect on that line “And as the feeling grows” One of my favorite parts
And David harmonizes to himself A LOT in this album, doesn’t he? Like I said over in the artist thread, “What’s better than David? MANY, MANY Davids!” lol
ronald..glad you’re here this AM cuz I had a dream last night as a direct result of what we were discussing before I said my g’nites..HG, here goes as best as I can recollect..
We, all of us from notingdavid, and all the ther OCD’s were at one of David’s concerts..must have been an invitation only concert. It was in kinda like a huge theater, but still with an intimate feel. we were all there so excited, you could feel it, there was like electricity in the air. I was seated front & center ( it was MY dream after all). Then the Emcee, don’t know who it was, started doing a “roll-call” of all things, of the thousands of people there, but it took a just a couple of minutes?!
The emcee asked that we refrain from talking, screaming, applauding and any other behavior that would take away from the enjoyment of those around us, or something stupid like that. We all said in unison..yeah, yeah ok..,where the heck is David? Then the house lights went out and it was total darkness..the orchestra ( yes a BIG one too ) started playing and a spotlight shown at the end of the stage and David comes out..the spotlight on his FEET only..he glides onto the stage..doing the MOONWALK!! haha! He was singing “SHOP AROUND” !! Then the lights slowly came on and he was wearing THE SUIT!! YES HE WAS!! haha!
I started laughing like a cra-zeh loon! And everyone was like “WHAT THE HECK”?? Then after he finished the song, he waited til the thunderous applause died down..no body cared about the rules set by the emcee!
David, looking so handsome laughed, welcomed his very loyal & loving fans..said there is one though that he wants to see..He asked if SILVERFOXE aka DEE is here? Well I looked around to see if anyone by THAT name was there..then I realized..IT WAS ME!! I stood up & David said “YOU, come here!” I walked up the stairs to the stage and David said “So you’re the one who causes all the commotion about this suit?” I said “I don’t know what you mean?” He looked right at me and said “Oh my gosh! I’ve seen you before..you’re that
cra-zeh lady!” I said “no you have me confused with some other cra-zeh!! Then he took off the jacket, asked me to hold it..I was shaking so badly, THEN he started taking OFF the pants..I said..no, no, David, you don’t have to do that..but he did anyway..Dang! he had on a pair of pants underneath. He said “Here ya go, my Lady. This is yours to keep now & forever!! I almost fainted! Then I guess he sang some cuz suddenly it was time for the last song..the song that became HIS SIGNATURE song that he sings at the end of his many, many concerts around the world according to the Emcee..The house lights dimmed, no orchestra this time. A baby Grand is brought out, David comes out dressed in a tux, and looks sooo, well hard to describe..elegant & beautiful. He sits at the piano and sings ANGELS. We are enraptured..never have we heard David sing like this..It was our reward for being there at the beginning, and when it was over, he was trying to speak but we could’t stop applauding. Finally with tears in his eyes, he said he had something important to tell us which was why we were invited here tonight..he said…
Then I WOKE UP!!! Dang it!! But if I could have gone back to sleep & continued the dream, I would have!! Now I’ll never know what he was about to say. Anyway, to me it was a very good dream…and I got THE SUIT, finally!!
I meant to say OAC’s ( ORINGINAL ARCHIES COALITION) not OCD’S…SORRY!
Silverfoxe,
Not sure why, but your dream brought tears to my eyes. I think it is because the love was so apparent.
Now that you are a YouTube video wiz, maybe you would consider creating a video using your dream as a script. You could even use the song “I’ll See You In My Dreams” (Joe Brown version). Thanks for sharing something so personal. It was very uplifting!
Oh, and I have a request -- would you please go back to sleep so we can hear what David has to say!
Talk about a cliff-hanger.
Thanks again.
Silverfoxe -- Oh My GOSH! What a beautiful dream…I was there, I swear, I was there! It Will happen one day, I am absolutely certain and, I have to say this, I BELIEVE you will get that dang silver pajama suit.
Thanks so much for sharing your dream. It was a thing of beauty…..I am officially putting in my order for part II tonight.
Love,, Hugs and Kisses -- Kizzi
Guilty pleasure: I’ve watched that dang scrapbook video three times.
SF -- sorry to burst that bubble, but I’ve met David and it does nothing to quell the 24/7 consciousness of him. In fact…..
HG -- I can’t help but wonder if the nightmare is an expression of the fear that surely must result from the trauma of your student’s tragic shooting. That kind of experience would make me feel very vulnerable, not knowing when some evil-misguided-wrongdoing might occur next--perhaps in my own life? That close a brush with mal intent would make me wonder who I could trust, really? It is said that dream characters represent some aspect of one’s own personality. The “shadow” side of our personalities is given short shrift in our culture, but is well worth befriending. I’m not discounting the sense of an evil spirit/possession that you had--I would never discount anyone’s personal experience, period--but I hope to alleviate your concern by suggesting there might be other dimensions to it. And hey—all us old ladies showed up for you when you needed us!!!!
oh -- silverfoxe -- I hadn’t read that you had a dream too when I posted my comment just then… I’m still catching up this “morning” (morning for me)….
Silverfoxe, your dream makes me so excited for the solo tour! It really will be an out-of-body experience, a real lovefest, won’t it!? WYSYLM times one thousand?? I don’t know if my heart can take it!
Your dream had me cracking up, too! David STRIPPING and giving you the suit?! LOL And he has another pair of pants underneath?! Priceless!
Hahahaha -- SF -- I love that he wore *the suit* just for you--and GAVE it to you!!! Whooo-boy, I’m hoping that one’s not a dream, but REALITY… sometime in the not-too-distant-future!! Sweet!!
Regarding dream life, vis-a-vis David, I keep hearing Dylan’s song “something’s really happening but you don’t know what it is, do you, Mrs. Jones?”
Nope, I sure don’t! But it sure is fun to speculate!!
Dr. Silvefoxe, can I come to work for you? I could answer phones, make appointments and such. I like the bene’s at your office… spanish lessons!!! And I especially like your clients (lol)
kizzi — hahaha, “silver pajama suit” --that’s it!! awww that’s good! Oh, and BTW, so glad you enjoyed “The Alchemist” at the end of the string, a few threads ago!
I just want to know..what was he going to say…anyone have any ideas?? In my dream, he was not sad, he had tears and was smiling..what could it have been he was trying to say??
I have no earthly idea what the dream meant other than maybe that’s it…David is not from this earth (world)??
Ah, now I’m going to watch the scrapbook video with rascal for the tenth time..I LOVE IT! I love when he sees if can “get to me” then says “I got to me”..I love his laugh!!
I really enjoying you insights on the marketing of David Archuleta but very troubled on your prop 8 article by painting a target on David’s back because of his religion.
When he goes to radio stations is already getting ask questions on politics and does not want to involve this in his career.
I love David and resent you bring this even though indirecttly to your blog. I deeply resent it has an LDS person who reads and loves your articles on David.
This blog is my refuge from politics.
vickilori, the content of that post was not included on the main page and it was every person’s choice to click to read further.
If you disagree with it, that’s fine, and you have stated your own views. However, perhaps let’s leave it at that and keep political debate out of this forum.
ON DREAMS:
Silver OCD is meant for you — Original Cra-zeh Dee! One & only. You know what I find so funny in your dream — it is so David-consistent — that part he was taking off the pants! Perhaps when you continue your dream, come dec 28 and rewind to that part — you could now see him in shorts!
HigherVibe You may have hit something there re HG’s nightmare… A traumatic experience can unbalance, unsettle us. Considering that the unfortunate incident happened to a student -- a young person -- is it possible HG that you were projecting your own fears? As Highervibe said “…not knowing when some evil-misguided-wrongdoing might occur next–perhaps in my own life?” Allow me to add a twist? Perhaps in another young person’s life? Specifically the one in the room with HG?
Dreams are symbolic manifestations of our subconsciousness. They also reflect our waking state twenty four to forty eight hours before the dream occurs. So we need to look where, who and what happened in your dream. Since David played a major part pf your dream what you need to look into is what he represents in your life, HG. And this is where I hazard an interpretation:
- The HG in your dream was actually David.
- The elderly women & young woman represent you.
- David acting seductive in your dream, after just watching his “adorkable” interviews may represent some conflicting issues within you or how he is regarded.
- The rescue bid by the elderly women & young woman (another sign of conflicting issue) is a manifestation of your protectiveness towards David, esp in the light of what happened to your dear student.
Does it make sense? Or do I sound spacey? Ha-ha. In any case, I just want you to know that though I tease you a lot HG (and most angels in this thread), I always reserve some serious thoughts for disclosures shared in rascal’s wonderful place.
silverfoxe -- Ohmigosh, what a dream. “YOU, come here!” Oh my… I would love to hear David say that to me. And I am overjoyed that you got THE SUIT.
In a way, it might be a blessing that it ended before he could tell you why we were all there. This gives you the opportunity to reflect and daydream and create some lovely endings. It reminds me of the story of Garrison Keillor and the lost short story. He was upset that he had left a new short story on a bus, but then found that a whole new avenue of creativity was opened up as he tried and tried again to recreate that original story.
vickilori, I think that rascal respectfully requested us to use the contact form (rather than the comments section here) if we had thoughts about the Prop 8 article. This is his house and I encourage us to follow his house rules.

Silver Chance to ask about the suit?
GO! GO! GO! Angels!
David Archuleta Seton High School Q102 FM Pennies Fundraiser
Sooo cute!

rascal #128 -- you made me go and watch it. SWEET!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJV0WExNQS4
I love this--warning screams are deafening. A video of David doing a cheer and little dance at Seton.
Hey everyone! I’m back after going out for an obligatory event. Now to catch up.
Silverfoxe#124, what a trippy dream! ha ha! Glad one of us had “sweet dreams” last night (and you got THE SUIT!!! Go SF!).
Does it matter why he wanted us there? At least we were there at his request! Cool!
Rascal#128, only three times? Step it up, my friend!
Highervibe#129 and Jackryan#138, thanks for taking a stab at interpreting my dream. Now that I have some distance from it (and it’s really good to process it by writing it up here), I completely agree that the nightmare was tied to some of the real-life violence I’ve been concerned with. There’s definitely a “loss of innocence” theme that my dream touched on, and David was a manifestation of that. Yes, in the context of spiritual and cultural beliefs, the “evil spirit” felt very real to me. But, I also recognize that these manifestations are also symbolic. As I’ve said, David has come to represent safety and comfort in my dreams. In my previous dreams, he shows up at a moment of crisis or conflict, and he’s definitely the calm in the storm, so to speak. Last night’s dream (or nightmare) was a perversion of what he represented. So, I totally can see how this reflects my overall anxiety about the negative forces in this world and how David-as-safety completely becomes someone I cannot trust. Hmmmm, so much to unpack! Thanks for helping out!
Yay! More videos! Now to catch up on more “adorkable” David.
vickilori . . will you please e-mail me at theringlady@gmail.com
hello all and TGIF….Omgosh! if the clip of David singing angels at the girls highschool is any indication, you really can’t blame walmart/jive et al. for marketing to teenage girls…you really would think that “Elvis was in the building” if you didn’t know better….
http://www.snarkyarchies.com/
Warning to turn down your speakers at about 2:45 on the Seton vid — my ears are still ringing!
I read a comment on David’s mySpace from one of the Seton students that said he didn’t realize it was an all-girls school till he got there. HAHAHAHA.
http://wkrq.zipscene.com/photos/browse/partnerphotos/-2
Photos of David at Seton (well some of the audience) -- 150 of them. Priceless! And, SF, a ton of him at a baby grand singing “Angels.”
Kizzi#144, just when you think David can’t get any cuter, he breaks out with a brand new dance. ha ha!
The things we do for David? How about the things he does for us?
Those black & white photos are absolutely gorgeous! It felt as if I was looking back on David’s career from a distant point in the future. And the video is something else too!
I’m strangely touched by the whole thing at Seton High. I must confess I felt weird about it at first. Our precious David showing up at a school for some obscure fund-raising event was nothing like the things I regarded as promotion worthy of his artistic value. Now it feels like genius! And Angels, well…What a rush!
HG: The dance is ArchuDorable. He does so much for me, that’s for dang sure.
I have to laugh bigtime at myself because every time he answers that he has never had a celebrity crush because it would be weird to crush on someone he didn’t know, I am nodding my head and thinking “oh, how very wise is he,” then, WAM, I realize I have a celebrity crush for the first time and it is the guy who is saying how “WEIRD” celebrity crushes are. So I agree with him and then do a 180 ’cause I am crushin’. LOL. Ain’t being a human a scream!
valbraz -- The black and whites are killer. Imagine them in sepia--then call 911! haha
BREAKING NEWS:
David’s new voice message says there will be a “deluxe version” of his debut album available, that will have “a few more” bonus tracks, which are different from the bonus track in the Walmart version!
http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=581792
People are speculating that the deluxe version will be on iTunes.
Does this mean we’ll have SIXTEEN songs of Archuness to savor?! Yummy yum yummy!
OMG, that Seton Hall video is precious!
ronaldsf -- THANKS!!
I was listening to the Star 102.7 interview and he alluded to more bonus tracks that he wrote. He said he didn’t have a favorite song on the album because “they are all kinda like your babies.” Then he said he co-wrote two on the main album and that the songs were just so much a part of him, and that is was just really cool to like watch a song have a life.
I LOVE this young man!
I’m thinking I-tunes smells a WINNER on this one!!!
I just found this video of David at Seton -- you can really see him dancing -- it is so cute! You can tell he is enjoying being with people his own age -- just acting 17 -- so precious! Here is the link -- click on the second video.
http://www.wkrq.com/?sid=5953
Valbraz,#151, I admit I thought the same thing — I mean, a penny drive for the Archulator? But the whole thing warms my heart and THAT DANCE! Sooo fun to see him goofing around with kids his own age.
Thanks Ronaldsf for that fantastic news about the deluxe version. (This is now officially TOO much excitement!)
Looks like the “Angels” video of the Seton Hall visit has been taken down. Anyone find a different one?
Ronald, thanks for the udpate! I need to check my messages, I guess. ha ha
Kizzi, valibraz, SF et al, I’ve stopped trying to rationalize this “Celebrity Crush,” which ain’t going away-ye-ya-ye-yay-yea-yaaay….
Off topic, and sorry to get a bit negative here, but this is in regard to vickilori#136 and mamsaun#146 (although less so, though there is an implication there that makes me question some comments). Will you please recognize that there is a huge difference between participating on a blog, authored by a blog owner, who can say whatever he pleases, and a public forum, where a moderator sets rules and standards for others to participate?
I just don’t get where people get off telling somebody what topics a blog owner wants to explore on his/her own blog. That’s not up to you to dictate, OK? Furthermore, Rascal went above and beyond being respectful to his regular commenters and lurkers, precisely because he has been sensitive to the diverse range of David fans, some of whom hold certain beliefs about religion and sexuality that may conflict with other fans. Keep in mind that he didn’t have to be courteous. He could have posted on whatever issue he wants, and let the chips fall where they may.
But, anyway, just wanted to express that sentiment. As someone who keeps my own blog, where I discuss all manner of controversial topics (politics, race, gender, etc.), I defy anybody to tell me what I can or can’t post on my own blog, and if I ever had a reader/commenter who tried to silence me, I’d rip that person apart like nobody’s business (and I am not above shaming somebody so badly that they’d be afraid to return to my blog -- yes, I have pulled out my rhetorical weapons on a few occasions).
Some of you are very lucky Rascal has been patient and courteous, because he certainly doesn’t have to be.
OK, enough of that. Now, onto more adorkable David!
Thanks ArchiesFan4Life for the link. Great videos. I am in ArchuOverLoad!
Joner -- Hi! I missed you!
Freo -- This one is working:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycgxJHQTZko
On the Q102 video he talks about how much he loves to write songs. When they tell him that Seton raised over 64 jugs of pennies (over $3k) he says “Where’d they get all the pennies?”
Reminiscent of “Gosh, Where do they park?”
Thanks for the simple truth, David: The world is an amazing place; you just have to appreciate the amazing things right in front of your eyes.
OMG!! I love the video at Seton!! So much fun to see David having fun with people his own age. I would take others advice about turning down the sound on the video…OR YOU WILL HAVE TO WEAR A HEARING AID AFTER IT…CAUSE YOU WILL CERTAINLY BE DEAF LOL!!! Way to go big D on Angels again. He is so amazing!!!
Hello Gorgeous…don’t ya just love the dance???
Hi Kizzi It’s nice to have been missed! I’m recovering from my “brief” encounter with David in Chicago! It was just a “fly by” but still awesome!
Wow, Joner. Where did you see him?
Joner, would love to get your full report!
Inspired by David, that dance is priceless!
My sister and I were downtown to spend the day and see the play WICKED and decided to take a chance and go to the radio station. While standing by myself looking out the window to a courtyard below (thinking he’d be coming in that entrance) all of a sudden i heard “THE VOICE” laughing and talking behind me. I spun around and saw a group of people with this short “kid” in the midst of them and thought “Nah….that can’t be him, he’s too young” and then he turned to say something to the guy next to him and I realized it was DAVID. Surreal!!! They were running late and trying to get him up to the radio station. I waited with a bunch of other fans, but we never saw him again because he had to catch his flight to Pittsburgh
I was happy to see him though. He looked really happy and really COLD. Welcome to Chi-town David! LOL
Joner, I got an e-mail that tickets are available for Chi-Town Jingle Jam. I am still waiting for them to announce David hopefully as a performer!
Wow, Joner. Even a glimpse is something! How cool!
OK, I just read on another site that Jennifer Hudson’s mother and brother were both shot and killed! Gosh, how horrible!
FREO! Are you serious???? I didn’t know!!! Leave me the scoop at Arch. Ave. OMG!!!
joner…. isn’t seeing him unreal…?
oh my gosh!! so many photos (150) and videos of David at the Seton school, and best of all..ANGELS! I can absolutely see ANGELS being his “Signature” song, especially when he sings it THAT WAY! Who would not want to hear him sing ANGELS live!! Those girls had a once in a lifetime experience today..they will remember this day when David is a renowned superstar. Lucky, lucky girls!
Joner..Saw a video of David in Chicago..poor baby, he was FREEZING!! It’s funny how to some people, David seems short, but I had to look “up” at him..maybe it’s cuz I’m 5’1″..hahaha!
kizzi..are you going to the Atlanta Jingle Jam?
HG . . . ouch . . I thought I was being very respectful . . sorry if I offended.
Refnaf….Yes it is! I actually met him when the tour came to Chicago. I have videos and pictures and stuff. I get shaky just thinking about it
Did I ever share with you guys the poster David signed for me? I got “the laugh” for it! AWESOME!
http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m335/Jonerz/Rosemont%202/Hunkerdown/hunkerdownsigned.jpg
Sorry, mamasaun, I get a little testy when I detect any kind of censorship. If I went overboard in implicating you, I apologize.
Joner, loving that “Archuleta Hunker down.” ha ha!
I think that the most surreal thing about seeing David is person is that he’s in 3-D! Seriously! I am so used to seeing him on a screen that it’s quite surreal, and even more surreal to see him respond to something I saw. As someone said, seeing in person is like seeing Youtube in 3-D!
That is horrible about Jennifer Hudson’s mother and brother! I’m thankful that they got to see her achieve success. That is so tragic.
First, my prayers to Jennifer Hudson and her family. How absolutely horrible.
Second, I’m in love with the photographer who took the black and whites of David. OMG!
Third, the Navy should start using the recorded voices of teenage girls screaming for David Archuleta as their new sonar device. Except they might stun the dolphins, whales and fish…they’d all float to the top.
First, and most importantly, Jennifer Hudson, my ♥ goes out to you! How terribly sad!
I’ve been thinking (ALWAYS DANGEROUS!)…
The (adorable) Archu-awkward-dorkiness we’ve seen in some of David’s interviews has put me in a contemplative mood and triggered some lingering curiosities I’ve had about what goes on in the psyche of some artist/performers.
Let me start out by stating that I am by no means a shy person. Anyone that meets me can tell you that I’m a very animated talker complete with hand gestures. I’m quite sure there are many people who, at times, need to stomp down their urge to slap a piece of duct tape over my mouth and tie my hands behind my back, but even though I’m outgoing by nature and “quick on my feet” so to speak, I am completely terrified of getting up and speaking in public. I know that this is a very common fear.
Now, I understand that David was painfully shy when he was young(er) and yet he somehow managed to conquer this fear and is able to get up in front of crowds of people and perform which is something that would absolutely petrify a lot of people, so it’s hard for me to fathom how someone who can comfortably deliver mind-blowing performances in front of a large audience can be so uncomfortable when speaking in public. I’ve noticed this with other stellar performers (Michael Jackson and Elvis to name a few).
They seem to “transform” when they’re on stage. We’ve seen this hundreds of times with David. His entire demeanor changes when he starts to sing. It’s like he’s in a completely different state of consciousness when he’s performing and I’ve always wondered…Where is this place? What is this place?
David has stated many times that his musical epiphany occurred while watching Tamyra Gray perform and has described the profound impression it made on him about the connection of music, lyrics and emotion to deliver a message in the song.
The only explanation I’ve come up with is that his desire to deliver this message to us is so strong and compelling that it somehow makes him overcome his shyness and fear. How else can you explain it? It boggles my mind and intrigues the heck out of me!
Oh boy…now I’m posting like I talk. Feel free to duct tape my keyboard and tie my hands behind my back.
Joner, the latest videos of David make me forget that he used to be “excruciatingly shy,” that’s how his parents used to describe him.
But, when you think he has alot in common with other shy yet incredible performers (Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley), I think this just goes to show that introspective people have a different way of expressing themselves (musically in this case).
Funny, you mention Tamyra Gray’s influence on David. Didn’t David also say he admired Jennifer Hudson? I know J-Hud was a fan of his. Gosh, my prayers are with her tonight. What a violent week this has been. No wonder my dreams have gotten so dark.
Thank goodness for the light that is David! So good to know he’s still so happy when you saw him in Chicago, Joner.
Got this from Snarky Archies: Columbus, OH is out of control -- it seems like a stampede erupted at a high school stadium after David sang the national anthem.
Beatlesmania is an understatement (isn’t this the same city where some fans got out of control at a hotel where the idols were staying during the AI tour?):
http://www.snarkyarchies.com/2008/10/ohio-national-anthem.html
I don’t know if you guys have been checking Snarkies tonight, but accounts of the “stampede” where David appeared tonight are frightening, and might signal the end of the accessible David we’ve been used to.
BTW, Juliebug, I’m totally with you on those B&W photos from today. There are very few B&W shots of him, and I’ve patiently waiting for this day. This shot is just paralyzing:
http://static0.zipscene.com/data/album_data//BUS_lg/BUS_00003802_52r2huci_lg.jpg
caseydog — I think it’s entirely possible that David’s rise to mass-audience stardom will be even faster than anyone currently imagines. I hope he’s ready for it. I hope we are.
#181 joner -- this conundrum keeps coming up doesn’t it. If I can relate something from my own experience… it might help make sense how David transforms from the prodigal musician and singer to the shy awkward presence off stage.
In grade 3 my son was becoming the class clown in school, disregarding instruction from the teachers and disrupting the entire class. As suggested by the school counselor we had our son “tested” by a psychologist to determine whether or not he was gifted -- to define -- “to be endowed with talent”. It was determined that his is gifted and this allowed him access to enhanced curriculum offered within our school system. As a result of this evaluation I did quite a bit of research, at the time, in the library (16 years ago). From this research I came across an author whose books helped me to better understand the concept of giftedness, so that, in turn, I could better understand my sons behavior, thought processes, etc. (Teaching Gifted Kids in the Regular Classroom by Susan Winebrenner, 1992)
There are many characteristics of people who are gifted and I do not want to make this post any longer than necessary, so I will only name a few -- Taken from http://www.gifteddevelopment.com.
· Learns rapidly
· Has an excellent memory
· Has a long attention span (if interested)
· Sensitive (feelings hurt easily)
· Shows compassion
· Perfectionistic
· Intense
· Morally sensitive
· Has strong curiosity
· Has a wide range of interests
· Has a great sense of humor
· Concerned with justice, fairness
· Judgment mature for age (at times)
· Is a keen observer
· Has a vivid imagination
· Is highly creative
· Shy
Also taken from http://www.gifteddevelopment.com
“Gifted children and adults see the world differently because of the complexity of their thought processes and their emotional intensity. People often say to them, “Why do you make everything so complicated?” “Why do you take everything so seriously?” “Why is everything so important to you?” The gifted are “too” everything: too sensitive, too intense, too driven, too honest, too idealistic, too moral, too perfectionistic, too much for other people! Even if they try their entire lives to fit in, they still feel like misfits.
It must be understood that giftedness many be prevalent in certain areas, and absent in others. So, for David I see his giftedness – prodigy – in his music and his “normalness” in his teenage awkwardness outside of the musical realm.
awestruck — Wow. Terrific sourcing.
joner #181: about the transformation—at the risk of sounding too over the top: David is an artist and artists are inspired, that’s part of what makes art “art” and not a “craft”. (David is actually both an artisan and a craftsman.) But back to the over the top- just for fun I looked up the definition of inspiration and what do I find but a verbal description of David- all of the definitions, down to the “act of drawing in; specifically air into the lungs”- we know we can hear literally hear that when he sings…just fun…
in·spi·ra·tion
Pronunciation: \ˌin(t)-spə-ˈrā-shən, -(ˌ)spi-\
Function: noun
Date: 14th century
1 a: a divine influence or action on a person believed to qualify him or her to receive and communicate sacred revelation b: the action or power of moving the intellect or emotions c: the act of influencing 2: the act of drawing in ; specifically : the drawing of air into the lungs
I think you’re right Rascal, and it’s bittersweet.
I selfishly want to be vindicated for fighting for him from the minute I first heard him sing, and I want him to be successful. But at the same time, as much as I believe David has exceptional character for a person of any age, it pains me to thing about the possible shocks he’ll experience along the way in this kind of trajectory. I want to tuck him away for the enjoyment of the original Archies, and give him a chance to enjoy a normal life. But that will never happen now.
Rascal, I hope his “people” are ready for it! Sheesh! Sounds like his security wasn’t prepared. Goodness! (Yes, I know, my protectiveness is already in gear).
Get with the program, folks! David is HUGE!
Just read about the stampede at the football stadium. If things continue like this (and they will), the media will be talking about “Archiemania” everywhere he goes.
Regarding the insanity in Columbus, I am SAD, sad for David since he obviously enjoys interacting with his fans, and I am sad for us fans, at the upcoming loss of interaction with David.
#188 happy -- love your “inspiration” post
That is insane about the game! The first reports said that they were grabbing his clothes and were right on his heels as he ran into the car. Jeff was probably thinking, “What the h*** did I get myself in to?” haha
DELUXE EDITION! possibly up to 16 songs, possibly from iTunes (per IDF thread) Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
OK, now things are making more sense. You see, while compiling the ASCAP reference of of the leaked album tracklist (that’s me being OC! Haha), am coming up with 14 songs already. But 5 of them are not yet registered (highlighted in yellow). And then, 1 that is registered is NOT listed in the leaked tracks — Ruined Me.
For those interested, here is my monitoring list:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/irngnw
That leaves 2 songs that are perhaps penned by David
ronaldsf Back to Angels: You are right, it should reach 4min too. But something was nagging me about the note in the leaked tracklist — it said new version, right? So I went back to my Angel collection — it suddenly hit me. The FORD Angel didn’t have the bridge! Taking out the intro and his spiel, the FORD vers is longer than what you have pieced together but only because in that version, he repeated the chorus 2x towards the end.
So don’t throw tomatoes at me Angels ok? But I think the album version won’t have the bridge. Just my guess and my way of moving into the next stage — acceptance — cos dang it! I also loooove that yeah-yeah-yeah as he bops in his chair! But hey, we will always have Tulsa, right?
What a contrast from the more “civilized” Seton High School. Public schools might be different…especially at a football game.
I’m really scared for David now (my suffocating dream from last night is starting to make more sense).
We all wished success for him and now look. You know the old saying …
The football stadium story is so scary!! I hate the thought of David running away from crazy fans. I’m appalled that security was so lax.
So many great posts! Awestruck, #186, thanks for connecting the dots!
And Caseydog: “I want to tuck him away for the enjoyment of the original Archies, and give him a chance to enjoy a normal life.” I know the feeling!
JackRyan4DA -- I noticed at Ford Day the absence of the bridge but David’s performance was so moving and exquisite, it’s now my fave version.
HG, spooky about that dream. This stampede thing is really freaking me out but I’m trying to remind myself that big high school football games also freak me out. You never know what kind of craziness will happen. Attention, Archie handlers, safety first!!
Listening live and “Crush” has just knocked Britney out of No. 1 spot on KISS 106.1 Seattle top 7 at 7. In only fourth day on their playlist. Go Crusher!
The fan reports say that the crowd reached his limo and rushed it, and they could see David inside:
….Dana could see him through the limo and apparently he was just sitting there in the corner, waving randomly, even though no one could see him through the windows.
another report…sounds like there were lots of guys rushing him, too, from other reports:
Ya it was intense and a disaster. It was raining and the girls were CRAZY!!! Like when I went to the fence before the Idol tour the people weren’t even this bad. Like it was ridiculous. There was no security and I am just unimpressed with the way the whole visit to Columbus was handled. I have a video of David singing, but you can’t really see him … someone’s umbrella’s in the way
Jackryan4DA #194, I also considered that theorum over at the IDF thread. (See how academic I sound? Kewl!)
When I first saw the Ford Day performance, I was also like “Where’s the bridge?” And I thought the reason for that was that he only had the piano -- I mean, it’s hard to “take the song higher” when all you have is the piano. Also, can you imagine “breaking it down” with those runs in the bridge, with only the piano behind you? I don’t think it works.
Today at the high school he reduced it to one verse and one chorus. So he varies it wherever he goes.
So as you can see, I’m still carving out a piece of land for my hope that the bridge is on the album!!
And no, I wouldn’t throw tomatoes at you -- only at Jive.
A verrrrry interesting read on RCA’s (counter)promotion:
Oh RCA
The highlight for me in the article
“5 months after the cheesy show I love called American Idol ended, here’s how the winner’s label promotes his album. Fueling fan wars, rekindling a painful loss, and shamelessly trashing a previous opponent, 17-year old kid (who by the way worships the ground Cooks walks on) who’s doing well on his own -- without a need for desperate promotion, much less any promotion at all.”
But what sickened me is this part:
“…If by any chance, you didn’t get an EMAIL from iTunes, and you’re a supporter of the younger David, thank the good Lord for it….”
You mean, this wasn’t just a passive promo scheme. That they have to “push” that crap to the market?!!! Initially I just found it hilarious -- I believe I posted that I think some franchise is shaking on their boot -- but now am getting mad. Why do they insist on being so stooopid (am sorry, can I say that here?)
Am already agitated last night, with one of the programs of ETC channel -- you know that Daily eNews and Top 10 Daily or something? They had this segment featuring upcoming albums this Fall and they did chronologically. So they started with Oct releases & I was of course getting excited when they were getting closer to Nov 11. What do you know?! They skipped to Nov 18! ARGHHHHH! How come they can include Jen Hudson’s album in previous features but not Archie’s? *&^%$#@!!!

I’ve been out all evening and am just catching up..
Regarding the mess in Columbus..I went to FOD, no info there, went to FanBlast, no info there either..kinda strange neither of those sites would have anything about a stampede putting David in danger…
If there was a stampede as described by snarkys, I am not surprised. He’s all over the radio, he’s #1 on VH1, CRUSH is being played everywhere. it was just a matter of time when he would no longer be able to walk around unnoticed..He needs security..big bruisers to protect David from his adoring fans. I have posted about the inevitability of this very thing happening several times previously. it was just a matter of time. David’s safety is at stake here! Not to mention him needing warmer clothing! He’s not in CA, dang it! Jeff, get him a dang warm jacket and an umbrella couldn’t hurt! GEESH!
#199 caseydog, that’s AMAZING! And Britney’s song is a monster! If anyone can crush a womanizer, it’s David!
Amazing post from SuzziQ at IDF (she was at the football game):
I was so excited to see guys just as excited to see David as the girls. I kept telling Amy and Dana from Snarkie Archies to tape it so everyone can see that David’s fanbase doesn’t just consist of tween girls. I overheard one guy telling his friend, “You cried after every episode of AI when David sang.” I was surprised. Go David go!!!
It was a crazy, crazy night. The rain, the cold, the screaming girls and GUYS- and lots of them. They were pushing up against the railing trying to get a glimpse of him. The guys were chanting David.. David.. David!!!! It was epic!!!!
Then he sang. There was not a sound on the field. He’s so soothing I wanted to float away from the cold rain drizzling on my head.
—
So great to see how winning over the guys! David’s power is much greater than some “silly little TV show.”
And here’s a funny moment from the day, given how scary the mob rush was (from Amy from SnarkyArchies):
Dana could see him through the limo and apparently he was just sitting there in the corner, waving randomly, even though no one could see him through the windows.
Well, Jackryan, I’m still waiting for the stampede videos to surface so we can do some viral marketing of our own with the latest “Archumania” to make all those other marketing schemes null and void.
SF, now that you mention neither FOD or Fanblast has this report, it feels strange only getting hearsay about this stampede. Where is the video, not only the candid videos from those who were present, but from local news? I can’t imagine there was no local media covering David at this event. Very odd.
Until I get some photos and videos, I’m treating this report as hearsay.
here’s the link of David singing the Anthem in Columbus IN THE DANG RAIN!!
here it is

I guess I’m a little upset!
Here’s the NA. Laughed out loud when the guy introduced him as “the new American Idol” and you can see David correct him. The girl that posted this at FOD says…
“Luckily my boss let me have the day off with short notice. I arrived at the high school about 6:15. I talked to a couple of Snarky people and some others but didn’t find anyone from FOD. I went to get my ticket and dang it. David arrived when I was gone. I went back and the guys from WNCI talked about a short meet and greet if we did it in groups. The girls were screaming without even seeing him. I guess due to tight time schedule and I think the way the girls were acting they didn’t do the meet and greet. They guys came out and said David was already on his way to the field.
I went to the field to find a place to take my video. There was a spot by the rail in the corner that looked pretty good for a good shot of David on the Field. I had an older woman on one side and an older gentleman on the other side. They soon left and 2 girls from Indianapolis took their place. [Note from Jenny: this was Chelsy and Alli from FOD!] They stated they left as soon as school let out to come to see David. From what I gathered, there were people from New York and Michigan. I am sure other states too.
I knew exactly when David could be seen because of the screams. He was still against the wall so that I couldn’t see him. As soon as he started walking on the field a bunch of screaming girls were behind me. I was smashed against the rail. But I was on a mission to video tape David singing the National Anthem for FOD. I tried to hold the camera as still as I could with all the pushing. I lost sight of David for a bit but recovered. The camera didn’t like the rain or umbrellas. The focus would go in and out.
As soon as David started walking to leave the fans started running after him. I turned to go down the ramp and it was insanity. I had people pushing from behind and trying to get by me. I literally thought I was going to be trampled. It was crazy. I lost sight of David because of the mob. I did make my way to the limo. Security was all over the place. Lucily they had parked the limo along a barrier to block the fans. The limo pulled away but stopped about 50ft away. Fans were flocking around the limo. Dave from WNCI got out an a bunch of girls stuck their cameras through the doorway to get photos. I have seen stuff like this on TV but have never been in the middle of it. ARCHUMANIA is here! It is only going to get stronger.”

Thanks HG for feeling my pain. But hey, on you post at #195 — seems like my amateur interpretation is not that amateurish after all eh?
Re: Ohio event — Oh I know that the stampede can be scary, esp with the rain and all the confusion… but am not worried. Wanna bet that David would be more worried about the safety of his fans over his own? He has Jeff to do the worrying for his safety -- tee-hee.
Am sure he is having a blast -- though must be surreal for him. And he is a runner! Haha -- he was even waving randomly inside the car despite all the commotion! OMDavid…
Re the Seton event “Where’d they get all the pennies?” At 17, David’s random comments can still fit “Kids Say the Darnest Things!”. Oh my!
Hudson? Mother & brother? Watta? Gotta go to check the news now…
Perfect timing! I ask for video footage, and they start coming in!
SF, I know what you mean about being upset.
Rascal, I’m starting to see why you were very concerned with their tween/teen marketing plans.
Wow the last 10 seconds of the first clips look kind of scary. All you see is a screaming mob and no David…
David singing the anthem @ ohio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdxpVBZ-qOk
no stampede video yet….
I’m speechless about this over the top Ohio fandom. We are much more subdued in Chicago, We are obviously a more sophisticated group of fans…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKIXXiTatig
#213, kindredspirit..yeah a better link, thanks…
Come to think about it, it may have been a blessing in disguise that it WAS raining cuz if it had been a clear night, it could have been worse..the rain may have kept most of the cattle..uh..fans at bay!
And poor David was freezing AGAIN! Hope he doesn’t get sick! Dang, I sound like his grandma!!
RonaldSF over at IDF noted in the first version “it looks like he’s correcting the announcer when he says ‘Your American Idol’! He’s like, ‘No, I’m the runner-up.’”
In the second version you can see the girls start to run down the stadium steps around 3:20
Yeah, his handlers are so lucky David’s not a “diva” … yet (not that he’d ever be, but, you know, things like staying out of the freezing rain and heavier coats are stuff someone like him should be able to request and have his wish granted).
On the other hand, even if David’s too nice to bother with such accommodations, you would think Jive/Azoff would treat their golden boy with more reverence. I mean, he’s the real “irreplaceable” star. He’s so not a dime a dozen. They need to start caring for him better and treating him with velvet gloves.
At least, you know I or any other Archangel on this blog would. Can we replace his handlers? SF will take care of the wardrobe, I’ll book his events, Jackryan will be the researcher, Rascal will take care of marketing, etc.
OK, did Archie sneak a kiss in at the 1:02 mark of this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYWAXHYMXRw
Kinda looks to me like the Crusher liked his dance partner …
HG -- Can I tuck him in bed?
Juliebug, knock yourself out! Every star needs a personal assistant. ha ha!
Joner -- 169 -- It *is* shocking to see him in person, yes? You know he’s young but you can’t quite be prepared for just how very very when you see him off stage (not in stage persona)! It was a shock for me too--totally surreal.
awestruck -- 186 -- wow, so THAT is why David is just too TOO !! !
Re: 222. Nope, just the camera angle. Looking at this clip shows he really didn’t get that close to her:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaGQ3SXNT2s
False alarm! LOL!
While still on the subject of singing the nat’l anthem, look at what I stumbled upon:
How to sing the National Anthem at an NBA game
Lessons from singing my first public National Anthem: Tom Nufer sang the Anthem at an NBA Utah Jazz v. Sonics game March 22, 2008
This homemade video shows some behind the scenes shots.
I answered an open audition advertised in the paper. Check the team website for anthem auditions. Here’s what I focused on to pass the audition and sing at the arena:
1) Respect. It’s not about you. It’s about the song and bringing some patriotism to the event. Respect the difficulty of the song and prepare well. Dress like you mean it.
2) Straight up. Unless you’re American Idol star David Archuleta, Marvin Gaye, or Whitney Houston, sing it straight
3) Don’t be long. Should be comfortably around 1:20. Everyone wants the game to start.
4) No fear. It’s a tough song and a big audience. Just go for it. It’s unlikely it’ll be perfect (mine wasn’t by any means). Don’t let the audition scare you from what will be a great experience.

What illustrious company!
Caseydog, I was going to ask you, but glad you caught it yourself.
One question that I have about Dublin Coffman High School is what did they do to be rewarded with David’s presence and his incredibly stunning rendition of the national anthem?
Because their bad behavior indicates that they were unworthy. Sorry, but that’s the schoolteacher within me disapproving of students not doing anything to deserve such a gift. At least Seton High School raised the most money and collected the most pennies for Breast Cancer. And they were very appreciative, and David had fun and was accommodating with them.
What, pray tell, did the hooligans (I know I’m being harsh, but still) at the other high school do to deserve David? Because, if they didn’t do anything special to get David to their school, I see no reason why other fans should be punished by having less access and increased security as a result of the bad behavior of others.
See why I’m ready to replace his handlers? I at least would have been screening schools that were worthy of his visit.
Just wondering, is all, since it’s quite possible the pandemonium could have been avoided.
HG: Come to think of it, if it had been a kiss, she probably would crumpled right down on the floor!
HG -- the way I understand it, per radio station arrangements David was supposed to perform at the House of Blues, or something like that, tonight. But it’s a bar, and he’s underage. So David and Jeff and Jive, I think, nixed it. It was cancelled. As a replacement event, the radio station arranged for him to sing the NA at this football game. Why THIS football game…I haven’t a clue.
Oh, I see. Too bad they didn’t stick to the original plan. Underage or not, a bar/club like House of Blues would have been screening the audience (and you always have bouncers around).
I mean, I get the whole idea around promotion, but they should seriously consider doing something like this again (or at least have better screening or selection of events).
Ha! David would pro-buh-blee have been safer at the bar with a few drunks! Just kidding..or not!
Well, caseydog, her not fainting was the obvious sign that no kiss had transpired.
I just saw this posted by ronaldsf over at IDF (cool idea!):
PROJECT ARCHUMANIA
Memo to marketing executives
A series of multi-layered marketing and media campaigns will be implemented in the coming months to assure a chart topping album release
. The primary target demographic of teen and tween girls will be reached through a series of high school and cultural initiatives that brand Archuleta as every girl’s “best friend,” “all-American crush” and “future heartthrob.” Enhanced strategic initiatives will be deployed, such as minimal security at teen and tween sporting events to provoke media interest and comparisons to Beatlemania. A secondary demographic of sports fans and those fascinated by outbreaks of mass violence will be reached by aforesaid news coverage. A third demographic of parents will be reached by emphasizing Archuleta’s natural talent as “inspirational,” “genuine” and “refreshing,” and triggering paternal and maternal instincts by subjecting him to adverse weather conditions and massive tearing at his clothes. The week of release media campaign will include a series of live performances and appearances on morning and late night television programs, and Archuleta will perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, post-release. If hospital treatment is still needed for his injuries, a secondary strategy of market saturation will be employed in time for the holiday shopping season.
P.S. We love you, Azoff and Jive! Now keep David safe! thumbsup.gif
SF, have you already signed off! I’m waiting for your *sweet dreams* message! Lord knows I need that tonight!
Oh! I posted before I read your most recent comment, SF!
Well, I’m getting tired, so it’s time for me to sign off. I guess I’ll be the one to wish everyone (and David) sweet dreams. Good night, and Be SAFE!
Yes..time to say G’nite all.. and to our baby…
David, please take care! Sweet dreams, be safe & secure in our love for you always! CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!! Hope you’re tucked in bed under a warm blanket!! We love you madly!!

You have a sharp eye! If she had been kissed, I think we’d have seen a reaction. Something like putting her hand to her cheek and fainting.
Abrra
Well, it *is* a start, but good grief, are they understaffed or what? Look at this…
http://www.davidarchuleta.com/
…at the bottom… “greek” text as a place saver at the bottom of “News”?!?! I think there are a few more openings for ND folks to fill! Copywriter. Webmaster. And click on “Photos”… “Photos coming soon” ! ! ! Hey, have we got PHOTOS or what?! Heck, I alone have 375 and counting. Oh, if you click on “here” they have ONE (count ‘em… one!!) article to read:
(oops, URL too long to include, just go to David’s site.)
Included in that interview is David’s comment about Clay Aiken’s decision to come out: ” …Whatever, it’s his life. You have to respect … how he lives.”
He is just unerring in his open-minded acceptance of--and respect for--others.
Love love love you David!!
OK, nighty-night, may all in the land of David James sleep well and peacefully.
SF#119 You wrote; “I see all the grown women with severe ODD who HAVE met David and have spent time, however short, with him and they come away still with ODD, but seem to be at peace with their ODD. Weird, huh?”
Gosh. You are brilliant. That was my experience, too. And so beautifully said.
I went home after I met him with a feeling of complete and utter peace. I can’t say anything more than that.
Mayhem in Columbus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTpbhboroUo
Wow, and I thought the all girls school was going to be chaotic!
Who would of thought it would be at a football game where Archumania would reign supreme.
Though on a more serious note. I hope this is not the end of David being so available to his fans. From watching so many videos I have come to the belief that being with his fans is something that David really wants to do.
And Jeff- make sure David wears his coat! Its cold out there!
When you guys wake up, you will like this:
David is the featured artist of Arthouse Entertainment
Arhouse is the music publisher of writers & producers mostly involved with David’s album.
In the spotlight is DioGuardi, the new 4th judge of AI S8 and who co-wrote the 11th cut in David’s album — TO BE WITH YOU — described as a pretty love ballad on piano. Can’t wait to hear this one!
http://www.arthouseent.com/
jackryan4DA- it looks like you and I get the nightwatch. Searching around for any late night breaking news…Like this one: Guess who has the #1 video on VH1′s countdown? Drum roll please…..
DAVID ARCHULETA!!!
I loved the VJ’s comment ” You must really love this guy”
Yep we do.
thank goodness CUTTER12 that the voting paid off. It is a tough week with Britney’s album out already.
Yup true love in the 1st order -- that’s what we have for DA
It’s another week gone by… there should be another leak from the album, right? Or are we getting spoiled?
Hope David wasn’t hurt during the Columbus mayhem…
QUESTION: If given free rein, I wonder which group would be more rabid? the young ones like those in columbus or the young once but certified ODD archie? hmmmnn…
Hmmm, I think that may be too tough to call. But then again, the young once have experience and knowledge on our side.
Just as I was ready to shut the computer down and go to bed happy. (Crush is #1- VH1 and I’ll go ahead and claim Musiqtone also) I ran across a couple more comments on the CHAOS in COLUMBUS that I wanted to share. First hand account by imabird from lovingarchie.com “There was security. But trust me, there was noooo stopping these girls. Girls ages 7-17, and boys, were freaking out and running. You know when you see paparazzi videos of celebrites with like a million photographers chasing them? Yeah, that’s what it was like. Scary, scary, scary. ”
But this comment from Snarkyarchies.com may put everyone’s fears to rest. “I made it to the front by the limo and David was already in it when I got there. I have no idea how I managed to not get stuck in the throng of it all. Anyway, people kept opening the limo doors and I could sneak a peek at David. He looked so little and cold in the big hummer limo. Of course I loved seeing him in there, but I wanted them to stop opening that dang door! David needed to stay warmmmm. But he would wave to people when the door was open. It was cute. I saw him laughing in there, too. So hopefully that means he wasn’t too freaked out by the chaotic scene surrounding him.”
With that, I’m now off to bed. Pax
NYT cutter! So am I all alone now here?
More than the stampede, I was worried about him being so cold… There was this video showing him walking along the streets earlier and a couple of fans were tailing them and offering their coat for him…
All throughout the day, he was chilling — couldn’t anyone get him warmer clothing???
Anyone missing RAY? I say bring him back!
My question got answered by a Dana herself — the girl in one of the stampede videos who tried real hard to hand over a gift to Jeff.
“… David NEEDED the gift. It was a warm and cozy knitted scarf and some hot cocoa! Just what the doctor ordered.
I hope David is snuggled up in bed all warm and cozy. He needs that after this cold, rainy, spooky night.
Thank goodness for thoughtful archies
Meanwhile, David has more radio visits to do next week!:
Oct 27 -- 08:30an -- Q100 station visit -- Atlanta, Georgia
Oct 27 -- 10:30am -- Star 94 station visit -- Atlanta, Georgia
Oct 28 -- 07:30am -- WFLY station visit -- Latham, New York

Oct 29 -- 01:30pm -- WPRO station visit -- Providence, Rhode Is
Oct 29 -- 07:45pm -- Announcer at WKSS Boo Bash -- Hartford, CT
Looks like the tour, doesn’t it? Then it is off to TV promo, YIPEE!
Cutter12 and Jackryan, thank you so much for keeping the all night vigil.
I actually had a restful night (no dreams or any that I remember) so sorry I couldn’t join you.
Good morning everyone! Yay! Crush is #1 on VH1! David is featured on Arthouse Entertainment! Eyewitness accounts that he was more amused, than scared, by the Columbus stampede!
Yes, Jackryan, I will join you with the chorus: Bring Ray back!
Archu World Domination begins!
Nice to hear that David is #1 on VH1 Hopefully we can keep him there until he makes his appearance on the show!
Hooray for #1 on VH1!!
Another fun night--I love reading “all ya’alls” posts. It has replaced the newspaper and morning news. This is REAL too; and with David’s “Where do they park?” and “Where’d they get all the pennies?” observations, I am thrilled that I can follow suit and find the amazing things right in front of me!
#174 Silverfoxe: Yes, my granddaughter and I are going to the Atlanta Jingle Jam. Lets meet up. We will be staying in downtown Buckhead. Email me at kizzix2008@gmail.com.
#134 Highervibe: Yes, your poem, The Alchemist, is stunning and beautiful. HG, hope you have higervibe’s poem for your ATD site. She posted on the ALTNOY thread near the end. I am sketching out some scenes to go with it and my friend will write in the poem in calligraphy on the canvas once I finish the scenes.
#180 juliebug: ROTFing, sonar indeed. hahaha
#186 awestruck: The gifted information was riveting and the connectedness to what is going on with David huge. Thanks!
Columbus Football Game:
So how many parents on this thread have successfully MADE their 17 year old wear a jacket or carry an umbrella if they didn’t want too? Just sayin’--LOL. But the need to keep him warm and safe is HUGE!
The crowd, the screaming, the “stampeding” -- the videos are incredible. Wow! With daughters as HS cheerleaders, I always found night time at high school football games a little more edgy, more of a free for all, and behaviors a little more over the top. Glad he has a hummer limo--he will need the extra armor as he progresses through his promotional tour of his album.
From yesterday’s videos, I perceive he is totally enjoying being with people his age; it was something he commented on during AI and after--the fact that he was the only one under 21. In a radio interview he talked about not limiting his songs on the album to a particularly type, that many songs did appeal to his age group and that they could grow with him as he grew in his music (I am paraphrasing).
I am sooooo HAPPY for him right now. This attention and promotion is aWEsoME.
LOL over a comment by Lisa, aka “soundscene,” over at IDF, who imagined this was what the calm, cool and collected David was thinking as he waved from the safety of his limo at the crazy fans creating a stampede over him:
Lalalala… oh, look… screaming girls. They look like they’re excited. Wonder what they’re excited about. Must be the football game. Lalalalalala…
ROTFL!!!!
good morning HG and YES I am LOL at “Lalalala… oh, look… screaming girls. They look like they’re excited. Wonder what they’re excited about. Must be the football game. Lalalalalala…”
morning…sooo, who won the game??
What game? Hahaha!
OMG I just got a look at those Columbus videos. WTF??!!?? That was some frightening s#!t goin’ down. It’s the freaking Beatles. And the album isn’t even out yet.
Hoo, boy. As caseydog suggested: Be careful what you wish for…
Mornin’ All! Sheesh, what a night!
I’m glad nobody got hurt in the “stampede”.
Although I’m happy everbody is so enthusiastic about David, I hope the fans don’t make his public appearances and concerts so intolerable that he becomes known more for being an “entertainment” than an “entertainer”.
Isn’t it amazing, Rascal et al? SF, I really was a bit lost when you asked “so who won?” I was like, “Who won? A game? Oh yeah, there was a game!” ha ha
Poor football jocks got upstaged by the softer, adorkable, lovable, smooth crooner. It happens EVERY TIME! Learn, dear boys, learn! This is what women want!
Never underestimate the Archulator (which is what AI did -- and, yeah, I’ll admit it: I get a serious kick out of them missing out, literally MISSING OUT on this soon to be megastar phenomenon! Was getting a “rocker” idol really worth it?).
I hope Jive seriously recognizes what they’ve got in their lap. They struck on a diamond mine -- and their rollout plan to market him the way they did with Jordin Sparks indicates that they need to go back to the drawing board and rethink their strategy. David is NOT THE SAME THING!
Still waiting on to see if they announce Chicago Jingle Jam. If David does not perform there, I may head down to Atlanta. Would love to meet up with some others at either concert location, depending on which one works out.
Crush is on VH1 right now (Eastern Standard Time)!
HG..speaking of a diamond mine..I said this on a previous post..JIVE may be used to working with young diamonds in the rough, needing to be cut & polished. In David, the already have a FLAWLESS, PRISTINE, BRILLIANT PRICELESS DIAMOND, no further cutting or polishing needed..Do they know what they have? If they are not yet convinced..wait til the album drops.
David’s career life just went though another phase which we witnessed last night..we must face the fact that as his STAR continues to rise higher & higher, for his safety, he’ll need to distance himself from adoring fans, maybe not quite yet, but at some point, even JIVE will have to insist on it. They can’t risk having their STAR get hurt. I hate that…but we all wanted & predicted Superstardom for David..you can’t have one without the other.
Freo..My sis & I will be at the Atlanta concert.
And, as Rascal already pointed out, the album hasn’t even dropped yet! ha ha!
OK, I’m gonna sound like a real b#t&h here, but do I care? NAH!
We need to make SURE David keeps the #1 spot on VH1..Leona Lewis..Simon’s protegee’, his star, is #2..we
CAN”T let her overtake David at #1..so we have to VOTE all week to keep David at his rightful #1 place and stick it to Simon ( sorry Leona ) at the same time!!
I was tossing and turning all night worrying about dear David and that stampede then I watch the vids this morning, YIKES! jackryanRDA, I was thinking the same thing – Ray, somebody call Ray!!
And what were they thinking letting an artist with an instrument like David’s sing in the cold and the rain with not so much as a scarf? Sheesh.
But that anthem… oh my.
Hi Everyone!
HG and TOfan,
Truer words were never expressed by the both of you.
HG, I sure hope this gets rubbed in the face of AI over and over for every accolade and award David receives from here on out. It’s WAR baby! Also what was JIVE thinking that they could even fathom to market David in the same way as Jordin. DUH?
Tofan, what were the event organizers thinking to have David exposed to the elements and rowdy fans like that for the sake of promotiom? He could have been seriously injured or traumatized. Apart from that, David has a series of live televised performances in the coming week(s) and dOES NOT need a sore throat or cold right now. His management team needs to go back to the drawing board for plans C -- Z. LOL!
BTW everyone,
Like others have mentioned I was a bit disappointed with the newest version of ANGELS. However with repeated listenings it has grown on me at a tremendous rate. I decided to block out of my mind how I wanted David to sing it and just listen to how he CHOSE to interpret it this time around. Here was Davey waving his brand, spanking new, rich lower register -- literally showing off for us and all we could think about was how it was in the past.
Davey’s newly developed lower register has become the latest weapon in his vocal arsenal and I believe with this album he’s experimenting with it in new and evolved ways. An example is when he sings “unfold” and “I look above and I know i’ll always be blessed with love” -- the notes in his runs are similiar but now an octave lower that’s all. Despite my newly found appreciation of this gem I sure hope what we heard was an edited version because I’m still missing that Oh Oh bridge --
Thank you Hello Goregous—- love this quote you brought over from IDF—
Lalalala… oh, look… screaming girls. They look like they’re excited. Wonder what they’re excited about. Must be the football game. Lalalalalala…
I am choking THAT is soooo funny— so David !!!!!
silverfoxe—- LOVE your avatar !!!!!!!
Love that pic and the one with the toque over his eye….hello there handsome!
I agree David is SO very comfortable with teens his age… I LOVE LOVE the “Wigelow” !!! Too adorable !
He is MEGA super star… wow and the album is not even out yet (i think someone said that) … what is to come??….. holy smokes !
BTW… he sounded great singing the National Anthem …cold and wet he still rocks!
Hi TOfan — are you going to Buffalo to see David?
Oh my heck!! Did anyone notice what the woman on vh1 said…said his fans are archies and archangels…then said he had a CULT like following. Now the Archie or Archangel reference I do not like much anyway. Don’t like being tagged with a certain name just because I am a fan. Afterall, I am an adult not a teen or tween. I consider myself just a little bit of an obsessed fan haha!! What got me going was the CULT reference. I can just see TMZ or someone else from the media getting a hold of this one. Now they think David is in a cult and we are his followers…GEEEEZZZZ…get a clue people! Some still have not experienced the phenom of David and they do not understand and the only rationalzation they can come up with is that he has a CULT!! Oh my, you poor clueless people. I hope will see the light soon. I think David should have sang Cooks song, “LIGHT ON”, cause some of them need to turn their light on LOL!! ….The lights are on but nobodys home…LOL!!!
joymus -- I have the same reaction as I listen to the newest Angel snippets repeatedly. It is sophisticated and the nuances sneak up on you almost unseen and then, WHAM, the beauty hits you.
Your phrases “new and evolved ways” and “latest weapon in his vocal arsenal” are perfectly descriptive. I was actually thinking yesterday that new listeners will be enchanted with this sophisticated rendition--it builds and swells gloriously without the glory notes.
Inspired by David: I, too, winced a little at the “cult” comment. And, yeah, Vh1 is struggling to explain what they can’t yet understand. When you view the top 20 videos, David’s does stand out as DIffeREnt.
I agree, neither ArchAngel or Archie describes the segment of fans I occupy. I guess right now I occupy the category of “secondary” according to the Walmart marketing description of David’s upcoming albums’ target buyers.
Hmmmm…..secondary. as in second—hmmmm…ok, so I am his “second” as perhaps in a duel; I would stand with him as his trusted representative (second)….ok, I am in…I am a “second.”
I am wondering how Jive, iTunes, etc. determine the target age groups of buyers?
Thank You Kizzi,
When it comes to David’s music I’ve put a new twist on the old adage -- If at first you don’t succeed -- try, and try again to If at first listen you don’t get it -- repeat, repeat, REPEAT. Unfortunately we have the soundtrack of David’s music thus far stuck in our head because of repeated listenings. We feel we can categorize him and sometimes it can blind us to whan he tries something new. I include myself in the group as well because all the leaked music took some getting used to. We were spoiled rotten by the AI Tour and Ford Day performances, so when he does unfamiliar or edgy music we are taken out of our comfort zone. Thank You David for stretching wide our appetites for new musical adventures with you.
Hey Rascal, how are things? I hope you’re doing well with your book venture.
Yeah, I was pretty shocked last night at the videos of the football game. But we all knew this was coming, the price of fame, and all that jazz. But I pray that David is coping well with the incredibly rapid rise to it that he’s experiencing as we speak. It kind of reminds me of Jennifer Hudson when she was on Oprah, talking of her rapid rise within the span of just one year. From American Idol star to Oscar winner. It can be overwhelming to some, but as you always said Trust the Archulator. and I do have all the faith in the world in David.
#266/Joymus, I’m with you, still hung up on the bridge in Angels. While it’s still my favorite David song, I sooo looked forward to listening to the “bridge” every morning after the previous night’s tour stop. How many times have I heard Angels? OMG tons, and still get goose bumps EVERY time. And holy cow, are we loving these new lower register notes? This is so new! My husband always said that was one thing missing in David’s voice, and I would tell him “he’s just 17, wait, it will come.” and wow, it’s comin’ fast!!
ojs759 — nice to “see” you! Yes, going to Buffalo (Refnaf too). Email me if you’re going (Deb416@gmail.com), would be great to meet up again!
Methinks now might be a good time for Archie to get back into cross-country training….
Good afternoon on this fine Saturday to everyone! I check this site every day, but haven’t posted for quite awhile. I’ve been crazy busy at work!
I’m going to the Jingle Jam in Atlanta with a friend I met on FOD & we’re wondering if anyone’s interested in meeting for a meal to share our love of David!
I’m not too worried about the “cult” reference. If anything, it expresses the intense adoration of his fans, as we saw last night. The problem comes when people perceive the “cult” as being a small minority of the population (something I’ve experienced being a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan LOL). But when that “cult” clearly is more than a small minority and represents a cultural phenomenon, which will happen once David’s on TV and his amazing album drops and gets some critical acclaim (sure there’ll be some stupidity but I can’t imagine it NOT getting some real praise), the media will be talking “Archumania.”
Trust the Archulator! His power his bigger than any stupid little box the media may try to put him in. If anything, it just shows they don’t quite understand what’s going on in front of them, because something like this hasn’t happened in such a long time.
Some people thought the so-called “marketing plan” I posted on IDF, reposted here at #233, was real! Now THAT made me laugh LOL.
Did people not catch the joke?
chickee, joymus..after reading your posts I went back & listened to both demos of ANGELS..even without the bridge, it’s fantastic. Of course, the bridge may still be in there on the final mix. I still think though that David may have recorded this “toned down”, if you will, version so as not to over-power the other songs on the album. Maybe in deference to the writers & producers of those songs. I know if I were one of those writers and heard the Tulsa ANGELS, I would not be happy having to compete with that powerful arrangement on the same album. I may be way off base..but, whatever..I’m just happy ANGELS is on the album. I also think David will continue to sing his Tulsa ANGELS version in concert. He knows it’s the one his fans LOVE and he aims to please. JMO..
And If David has a cult following..so be it, I’ll follow him til I
die of natural causes or he kills me with his glorius voice and sublime music whichever comes first, and so far the latter seems to be happening… “SOFTLY” of course! haha!
Personally, I think that Angels being on his new album may have something to do with his international fanbase who could not attend his concerts. The song is obviously a favorite of theirs too. I wonder what the original performer (and Simon who produced him) is thinking about David’s popularity with his version of this song.
If I were an artist that made a song popular, the kiss of death would be David Archuleta doing a cover of it.
I’m sorry… IMHO he is a musical genius that has the ability to make any song sound better than the original version.
Joner, Robbie Williams wrote & recorded ANGELS. It was hugely popular in England & Europe, not as much here, until David sang it..I think Robbie is very happy cause David brought the song back to the forefront and even though David’s rendition is superior to Robbie’s, Robbie will make lots of royalty money. But more important to Robbie is that HE is listed as the writer of this amazing song. Think about it..before David sang it, would you have paid any more attention to it other than to say..that’s a beautiful song? That is the genius of David’s voice..He makes you really listen and fall in love with the melody & lyrics of a song.
Closeup (!!!) of Angels at Seton High yesterday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PptcTukY2wI
Silvefoxe….I did not know Robbie also wrote the song! Kudos to him for a beautiful tune (that will always be connected to David Archuleta in the music history books.)
It’s weird how sometimes the writer of the song is not the best “messenger” of the song.
Like Dolly Parton writing “I Will Always Love You” but having Whitney Houston “OWN” the song.
I can’t wait to see all the directions David will be taking in his musical future.
Gah!!…..This is so exciting isn’t it???? It’s like watching your children succeed and I don’t even have children!!
I feel like I just bought a new puppy! LOL
Sounds like everything is A-OK after the stampede
FOD has received a text from Jeff Archuleta that should make everyone rest easy:
The Coffman High School appearance “went great! The people at the high school were great fans. FOD would’ve been proud.”
olemr2001..you beat me to it! I was just about to post that link…It’s sooo much better than the first video. David is FANTASTIC!!
Joner..I wouldn’t be surprised if David get’s requests from singer/songwriters for him to re-record their songs, especially if the song wasn’t quite a “hit” or a “hit” of very short duration..what better way to give their song new LIFE..Just asking David to put his special touch on their songs is the way! Unfortunately, all the writers out there who will want to work with David will be out of luck cuz David will be writing all his own music at some point…sooner than we think.
SF…I totally agree! David is so multi-dimensional! The world is his oyster!
What a FANTASTIC time to be a DAVID ARCHULETA fan!!
I am bursting with pride, I really am!
olemr2001 #280, that video is stunning!!
You can see David being a little emotional at the beginning too, and MUCH better audio. It’s great to hear the audience reacting to him too, without getting too much in the way of the audio.
Hey all -- just checked iTunes, Crush is back up to #15 -- looks like these promos are having an impact!
Surprisingly, Cook’s “Light On” is at #24, even with the big ads on the iTunes store homepage and the sneaky strategy they’ve been using to bump up the single (counting it as a single sale from album pre-orders). You know, at the end of Idol so many people in the media were gloating about how much more popular Cook had become than Archuleta. Cook received so much more support in the media from former idols (at the time Jordin said he was her favorite, Blake Lewis had “COOK” written across his fingers on the finale results show). Idol made such a big deal about Cook winning by 12 million votes (uuugh). SO, if Cook is so much better and was so much more worthy to win, what accounts for David’s soaring popularity, which is currently surpassing the “obvious” winner?
I’m not trying to start trouble here, just a thoughtful discussion on the topic. We all know how much negativity David endured from Simon and the media throughout the show….so it’s really surprising (and encouraging) to see his surge in popularity now considering how many naysayers he had…
I am a true lover of music. ALL kinds of music. I am very eclectic (I love ALL genres) and open minded when it comes to music, I am however, troubled by a dimension of today’s music, and this is NOT an attack specifically at David Cook although he is a participant.
What is it with rock songs nowadays? Is there some undisclosed competition going on to see who can build to the most ear piercing, shrieking power note within a song? You know the one… singer standing with head tilted back, mouth wide open, tonsils exposed while screaming a long screeching “glory” (?) note at the top of their lungs. I realize that lyrically some songs depend on the expression of a certain amount of angst, but the only thing that’s in anguish are my ears.
Could this be the making of some new reality competition? “So You Think You Can Shriek?” or “America’s Got Anguish”. I personally won’t be tuning in.
I hate to say it, I think I’m too old to “get it”.
Little Mushroom…IT”S CALLED KARMA!! There’s good & bad Karma. David has LOADS of GOOD karma all around him…not so for the other one, but it may not be entirely his fault. Or I would like to think so, if only cuz David really cares about him.
Or… it could be “what goes around comes around!!
silverfoxe -- why did I not think of that? I am a big believer in Karma myself -- and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there!!
Hey Little Mushroom (GREAT screen name BTW) i think you and me (and a WHOLE LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE) are still rather upset that David did not win American Idol. I personally could not re-watch his final performances because they “upset” me for a long time.
Thanks to my brethren here at NotingDavid, I have come to embrace the belief that the BEST thing that could have happened for David personally and professionally, is that he LOST this competition.
He has been provided with the opportunity to watch, observe and learn without being under the spotlight and pressure of being the WINNER. He’s also had alot more freedom outside of Idol’s grasp.
You know as we all know that this kid is a superstar. I think what we need to do right now is let this classy kid continue to share his multi-faceted talent while we sit on the sidelines and high five each other for being so intelligent that we “got it” before the rest of the pack!
Deb, #274, if David isn’t playing Jingle Jam Chicago, I may be looking Atlanta way. I’ll be sure to let you know!
If you all have not seen the video of David singing at Seton..not the first one, but the one olemr2001 posted..I have to keep watching it..I can’t buh-lieve he can sound THAT good with just a school mic and piano. No special sound equipment like in a concert. His voice is truly a special instrument. I am again just BLOWN AWAY at the magnitude of David’s talent! WOW!
Joner -- all very good points! It’s just funny to me that despite being a huge David fan, even after the competition was over I was certain he would always be surpassed by the winner in terms of general-market sales and popularity. Now looking back I believe my thinking was influenced by media hype. Ugh the power of the media!
On another note, I am excited for the Leno appearance that is coming up (11/7 I believe?) Wonder how he will perform Crush….I vote for standing with a mikestand
Freo, Deb..my sis & I will be at the Atlanta Jingle Jam. Kizzi will be there and Maia from FOD Will also be there.
So let’s all try to get together if possible! I’m sure there will be many more ODD sufferers there!
SQUEEEEEEEEE!! David and a mikestand!!! MAJOR thumbs up!!
David and “his band” and a mikestand!!! Oh boy…I think I need to go sit down….
Joner…Who are you and what did you do with the COUNTess?
Here is an interesting article about music sales in the NY Daily News. Shows a downward trend in sales b/c of digital age plus commenters’ discuss what they hear on radio and quality of songs and albums.
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/2008/10/23/2008-10-23_in_a_lowsales_era_whats_a_hit_in_music_.html
SF…I updated my avatar but it doesn’t seem to want to show up. All I see is the “generic” one. Is that what you see?
Joner, yeah..but did you delete all your temp files? If not, you need to do that.
Kizzi..that article is discouraging, however if anyone can sell albums based on voice & talent, it’s David. He doesn’t need gimmicks, doesn’t even need quirky lyrics like “My Hands” ( and I love that demo). His album will be a top seller, I’m sure of it.
I agree Silverfoxe. Kinda why i liked it because it points to good sales for Crush!
Ronaldsf#276, I got the joke!
Wanna love JIVE more? Check this out! Banner ad for David in Britney’s youtube channel
http://www.youtube.com/user/BritneyTV?ob=1
What’s more -- they appear in other big-time Jive artists youtube channel! — Justin Timberlake’s, Pink’s, Jordin’s KEWL JIVE!
Now that’s how to do a promo!
jr…yeah, great..but GOSH, why did I have to see Britney’s video, even for a few seconds…UGH!!
I’ll check out Justin’s..I like him, & Jordin’s channel, not cra-zeh about Pink.
But yes, you’re right..great promos.
Silver Clearly you’re not the primary target market (PTM) of some of those sites. But consider this:
1. Those youtube channels have tons of views daily -- esp Britney’s cos this is her comeback album. (I wonder what dress David will draw over Britney’s -- hahahahaha)
2. The banner ads are not random, cos they can be changed by the account owner at any given time
3. David’s message when you call the number is discussing the tracks on the album -- great timing eh?
4. When you click on it, it leads to his own youtube channel (that doesn’t have the banner for his own album! — oh Jive how could you miss on that one!)
Joner Yes, Robbie Williams co-wrote ANGELS as Silver. If you’re interested, I have a list of writers/composers for David’s album — here is my ascap monitoring list
http://www.sendspace.com/file/irngnw
I meant to say “as Silver commented.”
jr..Now THAT was FUNNY!! about David drwing a dress over Brit!! Hahaha! Her “comback” song is so bad! And I mean BAD, bad, not GOOD bad..I dunno, I hear kids say “BAD” when they mean good??? Do they still??
How much longer before we get some great music from a great singer?? Oh YEAH..NOV 11..David’s album is gonna be BBBAAAADDDD!!
Little Mushroom#286 and others, these are my thoughts on why David lost and why, eventually, he seems to be doing better (at least in terms of single sales and popularity) than the winner.
Let’s not ever forget: Very early in the competition, David stood out (and this was even before he knocked “Imagine” right out of the park). All anybody was talking about for season 7 was David Archuleta, David Archuleta, so much so that the media started saying the competition was a BATTLE FOR SECOND PLACE! Remember that?
American Idol is first and foremost a reality TV competition -- they are not about scouting new talent. I mean, finding untapped talent is a byproduct, but they care about TV ratings, which is dependent on tensions like creating competition.
On the TV show, Cook seemed like such a “unique” contestant, because he was doing the rock thing, the guitar thing, he’s a consummate entertainer (in many ways, like Fantasia but more mainstream), which helps a contestant stand out from other karaoke singers. He was the most likely person to take out David Archuleta, the undeclared winner of Season 7 since Top 24 week. That’s why, when David became known as “ballad boy,” Cook seemed like a “cooler” alternative, and, besides, TV voters hate a foregone conclusion. Cook helped TV viewers feel like they were subverting the powers that be by choosing someone who wasn’t obviously the most marketable talent on the show (Cook was the anti-David Archuleta -- that’s why he won and that’s why Vulture can mockingly state that he won “ironically”).
Why the show decided to go with Cook over David, hence their manipulation of this TV spin, may have something to do with what happened since Season 5.
You see, Seasons 1 through 4, few people would debate that the rightful person won their season (there was some controversy during Season 1, but only because Tamyra Gray, whom everyone expected to be in the finale with Kelly Clarkson, was booted off early; during Season 2, there was some dispute but only because Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken had very few votes between them; and during Season 3, Jennifer Hudson and the other two “divas” were all in the bottom three during Top 7 week -- thus leading to charges, including from Elton John himself, that racism was involved). Despite these issues, most accept that the eventual winners of their season- Kelly, Ruben, and Fantasia -- were the rightful ones. During Season 4, when Carrie Underwood won, she was the declared winner since THE AUDITION!
So, up until that point, I believe the show allowed the process to play out -- even while viewers could tell that there were favorites who were being pushed toward the very end (Ruben, Fantasia, and Carrie, for example).
Enter Season 5, and it’s still so obvious the show’s producers (especially Simon) are bitter that Chris Daughtry did not win that season. Taylor Hicks happened, because he was so entertaining, and his fanbase Soul Patrol voted him to victory. However, RCA did very little to support him and instead threw their support behind Chris that year. I don’t know if you noticed, but during the finale this year, AI had the audacity to rewrite their history by pretending Chris Daughtry was the American Idol winner his year (yeah, they suck like that).
After the Taylor Hicks fiasco (Taylor was the oldest winner they ever had), especially when he failed to sell platinum, they got really scared when Melinda Doolittle, during Season 6, was the frontrunner (presenting them with the challenge of having to market a 29-year-old, just like Taylor, who is super talented but not very pretty). On the opposite spectrum was Sanjaya Malakar, the boy wonder of a different stripe, who -- had he won -- would have made a laughing stock of the Idol brand.
Once Sanjaya was voted off, the show’s producers started heavily promoting Jordin Sparks as an alternative to both Melinda Doolittle (considered too old) and Sanjaya (who was age appropriate and popular but not all that talented). However, that season, because of the belief that true talent (Melinda) lost out to popularity (Blake Lewis and to a lesser extent Jordin Sparks), especially with a sulking Simon Cowell, who didn’t hide his feelings that Melinda was robbed (and I shared the same feeling) complaining, the show has been plagued with the problem of how to “get back on track” to when the most talented won their season.
Enter Season 7, with the instant popularity of David Archuleta. Once Cook showed that he was a viable contender and competitor, the show concocted a script that pitted the “true talent” (who Cook supposedly represented) against the “popular contestant” (David, who got branded as the “popular” vs. “talented” one, thanks to previous Idol seasons that have featured very popular yet thin-voiced teen contestants, from Sanjaya to John Stevens). Except David was the real deal.
I believe that the show would have been fine with either David winning, but they severely underestimated David. They forgot about his instant popularity from the word go. They saw him as this vulnerable, tongue-tied kid, who was letting the competition get to him (not to mention the fabricated “Stage Dad” stories), and so they thought the finale would make for great drama but that Cook would sail on to an easy victory.
But, Oh!, we remember that finale. David came back strong and reminded us why he was the real deal, and why he was so appealing and so amazing and so magical. But, they had already done the damage, and those who wanted to cast an anti-David Archuleta vote did.
So, this is a long explanation, but I wanted to at least share why I think David lost the season but won for life. And his loss is complicated, and is influenced not just by this season but by other seasons as well.
What was considered “unique” in the context of a reality competition is not all that different in the music industry, so Cook -- once considered unique -- is just another generic performer. What other teen star out there is on David’s level? His voice is phenomenal, and this, combined with his killer looks AND his amazing personality, makes him one in a million!
Too many got distracted by Idol’s manipulations to remember this fact. But, the competition is over, and Archumania, which opened season 7, is back with a vengeance (and it’s not even in full force yet -- wait until the album drops!).
Hello Gorgeous—- standing ovation !!!!
You said it…just the way it IS and WAS.. thank you.. I wish I could give you a big HUG!!! That is just so …IT !!! I am not even sure I understood it so completely until right now… I have always felt all that, but you said it …you said it just SO right !!!
Thank you…
Going back to Jive’s marketing campaign, I see this as an opportunity to strike while the iron is hot from Idol and the tour, further solidifying David’s appeal to the teen and tween fans, who are often ADD-ish regarding their music preferences, and whose opinion is sometimes based upon the appeal of the last music video (aren’t I awful for generalizing?). David is good looking, wildly likeable, sings like an angel, making him perfectly poised to make a huge dent in the buying habits of this group. And of course, Jive is also are appealing to the parents who pay the CD/concert bills. David possesses just too many of the essential ingredients to appeal to these groups to not carve out a marketing strategy around them.
I’m betting that Jive KNOWS that many of the more mature fans will stick with David through this this CD and beyond (they are right) and to keep us happy, there are some ballads and Angels cover. And yes, we are underestimated! I am actually more interested in his R&B stuff than the ballads. I guess we don’t need to be advertised to (is that a phrase?). We already get it. The pre-orders are already in; gifts recipients already identified. Are we that predictable?
HG..you amazed me AGAIN! Everything you said makes absolute sense..I do have a question though and it kinda bothers me because I usually follow David’s lead, if you know what I mean..from listening to his song & artist choices to trying pad thai food, so I gave Cook the benefit of a doubt cuz David likes him. My question is, do you feel ( your gut feeling )that Cook is sincere about what he says about David..his praise for David? I remember one scene on AI right after Cook sang, David was up next waiting to come on and Ryan said, next up, David Archuleta, and the audience just screamed and Cook looked up at David on the balcony and if looks could kill!!! I have never forgotten that look from Cook..it was not pretty! From then on, I never, ever saw another performance by Cook, until the finale..I could not forget that look he gave David. Then the Finale and Cook is loving on David and during the tour, he was gushing over David like he had ODD! Then David showed that he really admired and liked Cook, so I thought maybe I was wrong…then he made that snide remark about David being uncomfortable around a lot of women, which some people took differently..but I did not, so again I am back to my distrust of Cook? Do you think I’m justified or just overprotective of David?
Oh my gosh Hello Gorgeous. That was very well said! I hadn’t watched AI until this year, so your history lesson was very insightful.
The other factor that tipped the balance was the blatant Archie-bashing/promotion of Cook on Ellen and Jay Leno days before the final vote. I actually think some of the over the top comments towards our David by Simon during the finale served as a pre-emptive strike in case Simon was accusing of skewing the vote. Damage control was already in the works.
I agree that David is well poised to accomplish what he was born to do. And AI7 season will be the one where folks who didn’t follow the show, but hear David Archuleta at some point say “This guy DIDN’T win American Idol???”
Good grief HG,
Your analysis is so good it’s frightening. You together with Rascal can write and publish a dissertation about the most popular and tatented performer who didn’t win idol because of machinations beyond his control. I can only hope they will eat their hearts out with salt and pepper for good measure, by such uncharitable actions towards David. I only give kudos to Randy who IMO tried to right the wrong but it was two against one. As they say -- Don’t mess with Karma!
Ojs: you’re welcome!
Silverfoxe, I did not notice Cook shooting daggers at David -- I’m very tempted to go through his You Tube videos to catch this. Do you remember which week this was? Top 24? Top 20? I do remember, early in the competition, that TMZ had a story about contestants being jealous of David. On another site, they had turned this into an anti-Latino thing because, on the boys’ side, David was the target, and on the girls’ side, Syesha was the target. But, TMZ definitely made it sound like the guys were totally jealous of David because of his frontrunner status. Granted, David has since dismissed these rumors in his recent interviews, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some envy going on.
Now, is it possible Cook was part of this? I don’t know. I mean, during Top 20 week, when David was busy crying because his friend Alexandrea got voted off, I remember seeing Cook trying to comfort him by rubbing his back, so I don’t know. I think there is genuine brotherly feelings between them, but Cook is a natural competitor, so I don’t think he’s above engaging in “sibling rivalry.” I’ll always remember how he tried to make himself look good for choosing a new song to sing during the finale, rather than reprise an older performance (a clear dig against David’s reprisal of “Imagine” -- I don’t care what anyone else says about that).
Pastel: that was the first time Simon had ever gone off the show to trash an idol contestant -- and on Jay Leno and Ellen no less. I haven’t forgiven him for this because that was just wrong IMO.
Joymus, funny you should mention this. In two weeks, I’m delivering another guest lecture, this time I’m doing an analysis of the “popular vote” and comparisons between American Idol and the Presidential Elections (and, since that lecture is a few days after Election Day, I’m waiting to put together my conclusion, based on who wins. Not to get into politics, but back in May, I made a prediction on my blog that, if David won AI, Obama’s chances were good, but if not, then Obama could lose too. God, I hope my prediction is wrong! But that’s all I’ll say because I don’t want to make others queasy referencing the elections).
Anyway, thanks for weighing in.
HG,
Just as SF has intuitive feelings regarding David, I too just had a feeling that you had researched and analyzed this AI7 debacle to the point where it has become personal to you. We all feel similarly but you have the gift of rationalizing David’s second place within a cultural context. After next week, could you consider “leaking” the talking points of your lecture for us?
pastel Cook is complicated and was at the center of a complicated situation. I am an Archie through and through but would not ignore that Cook has talent. BUT do I trust him when it comes to our David? Do I believe that his concern and affection for David is real? I may never know.
So I will take my cue then from our David. DA has always maintained that Cook’s like a big brother to him and is thankful for it. They have shown a healthy respect for their artistry and personhood.
DA may be young & still innocent in some areas but he is insightful Yes, he always has nice things to say about others, but you can see in his actions with whom he has more inclination.
Like water seeking its own level, towards the end of the tour, we can see to whom DA has gravitated among the guys -- towards Jason. DC has so much more in common with Michael. Their chemistry was evident even during the audition days.
In one of the recent interviews, a DJ joked that DC could be run by a bus or something… and David’s reply? “I’d be sad.”
Bottomline: whether Cook is real or not towards our David, the latter for sure, is. So I’ll take DA’s cue.
HG..the AI episode I’m talking about I think was either the one when he “talked back” to Simon aand Simon got really pi$$ed at him. I think that was the last performance I saw by Cook but not sure. It I never saw the “Hello”, or “Billy Jean” performaces..heard they were really good, but I didn’t care. I just changed the channel when he came on. I just did not like him, mostly because of the way he looked at David, and cuz he was cocky and I couldn’t stand his hair which is neither here nor there..jus’ sayin’. Anyway, if you have access, look up the top 20 to the top 14..was “look” my imagination?
Joymus, after the Elections, I’d be happy to wax poetic on the subject! Talking points is a start.
Wow, that’s all I can say!! You guys are amazing. I can’t keep up. ( I’m am busy being political and that’s all I should say. Rascal, I was inspired.)
The analysis that goes on here is well, I can’t even find the words. Please don’t stop. David needs you guys. Jive, powers that be, are you listening?
Joner, please bring back the Count (ess) sometime. It brought such a smile to my face. Just adorable.
Awesome stuff. Will be lurking.
And just because I re-visited that particular interview, am LMAO again
DJ: You were the youngest on the tour bus. Did you get somewhat of an education as well?
DA: Well, it was summer.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! How can you not love David to bits?!
OK, silverfoxe, I found the video (it was Top 20, when Cook performed just before David delivered his famous “Imagine”):

I caught the “look.” Hmmmm…you may be onto something.
Kizzi Continuing with our discussion on Galdwell’s “Tipping Point”, i think we may have found it!
If my guess it right, that Columbus stampede story will be repeatedly referred to all over David’s radio tour next week. If that happens, more people will take notice, will see his national anthem rendition, the Seton event and go back to other previous performances…
When that happens, market would be ripe for TIPPING.
The other timely development would be the People’s Choice Final Selection which will be posted on Nov 10, a day shy of D-day! I hope manhy Angels joined the panel and patiently filled out the survey — it was such a looooong nomination process -- gah!
But it would be uber kewl if David is able to penetrate even just 1 category. It is such a high profile event that would definitely tip the market.
HG…SEE I told ya! It was NOT my IMAGINE-atiion! Cook did give David the evil eye!! I never again watch a Cook performance on AI until the Finale, and actually only when he had the duet with David. There was something about him…creepy kinda.
SF, another thought about that video and Cook’s “look” that he gives David. In all fairness, I can’t say that I blame Cook at all. I mean, he just came out on stage, did his best to give a performance that best reflects what he’s all about (doing his rocker thing), and after all that, Simon basically tells you that you don’t have any charisma. Ouch!
Yeah, he got a little attitude, but I can understand why he’d be defensive. Then, on top of that, he gets into an argument with Simon, in which Simon was like, “Don’t get an attitude with me because, believe it or not, I know what I’m talking about, and I’m trying to help you improve.”
So, Ryan tries to deflect the situation, and then introduces the “charismatic” David Archuleta. I’d be shooting our David daggers too! Seriously!
That had to hurt, for real! And, obviously, Cook took Simon’s comments to heart, because what did he do the following week? His own famous “Hello.” So, I’m not sure I see the “look” as evidence that Cook was out to get David, but it did speak volumes that he had his eye on David real early because he rightly understood that he was the only competition he had if he was going to win the whole thing.
HG..I figured you would give Cook the benefit of the doubt because of the harsh critique he got from Simon. And maybe you are right cuz I thought of that too, but something about him right then just turned me off. And I did get over it for a while..I have “BillyJean”, “Always Be My Baby” and “Little Sparrow”
