Widening the Circle
Watching the always impressive Frontline program on PBS this evening, about our presidential candidates (it can be seen in its entirety here), I was struck by a comment made by one of Barack Obama’s early campaign managers. As he and a friend were watching Obama’s historic address to the 2004 Democratic Convention on television, they laughed as they recited the speech along with Obama nearly word-for-word. “This was the same speech that he used to give to, like, ten people,” he said, referring to their early days in the churches and meeting halls on the south side of Chicago. Only now, it was galvanizing thousands in the convention hall and millions across the nation. People were weeping, cheering, and predicting the rise of a new American leader.
I couldn’t help but think of those early videos of David singing at weddings, school assemblies, and parties… And even of cozy Tuesday nights on the couch… Those of us in the “base” will undoubtedly watch with similar recognition as the weeping and cheering spreads far beyond our corner community. This may well be the last few moments in time when we are able to claim David as our very own. His circle of devotion is about to widen.

Kindredspirit: those photos are phenomenal. Thanks for posting them. I just finished reading all the entries about the stampede and the high school visits, but have not been able to watch the videos (youtube not working for me tonight).
It feels good to be an original fan. It gives you a sense of duty and ownership. A sort of duty to protect him from stampedes and bad weather, defend him from marketing schemes and dumb radio interviewers, promote him among our friends and relatives even strangers, and spread the word for him to achieve all the success he rightfully deserves, even if that implies to vote on line in every single poll that mentions his name.
And yet, a sense of ownership, like we saw him first, we got it from the beginning, we love him more, we are the true ones, he belongs to us and WE are the ones sharing him with YOU.
It’s kind of backwards. We want the world to embrace him, while having a post-it in our foreheads saying ‘I told you so’.
David is a champion. He has won many hearts and in many different ways, not just musically. He inspires, he motivates, he exemplifies, he leads, he is a true champion.
And for that he has my vote.

I can see how the fervor with which we embrace David resembles how some of Barak’s fans are nuts about him, but that’s where the resemblance ends in my opinion.
David is sensitive; he has a huge heart. I don’t think he’d be okay with the offing of MILLIONS of inconvenient babies, much less letting babies born alive after an abortion be killed or left to die on a table like Obama who voted against the “Born Alive Act”.
Bookaholic, I know you’re a passionate David fan, so I’ll temper my words.
The post is comparing two phenomena, not two people. Sure, there is an implication of a political position, but that isn’t really the topic of this post.
Folks have talked about not having political debate in this forum. My own personal view is that debating politics in any forum is fine if it’s not off-topic, but this does more than that. You are using an assumption of what David’s political views are to promote a political position and to argue against a political candidate. David has chosen not to make public his views on either, for his own reasons.
Okay, back to the topic: we should come up with a name for us “originals,” shouldn’t we?
I’ve been thinking the “Original Arch Angels,” but it’s not very interesting. But it’s straight to the point. Any other ideas?

A little bittersweet, I suppose. But we would not have it any other way, right? 
Kizzi & I have this ongoing exchanges re David’s inevitable rise to fame in the sociological context, based on Gladwell’s Tipping Point. As I am a social marketing practitioner, I have a keen interest in studying David’s journey and when would his journey tip the market and if possible ID what would tip the market.
I remember the 1st day Crush hit cyberspace and it went #1 in iTunes in less than 19 hours…Rascalyou created a new thread just for that. The lovely Josie recounted her experience with David & she mentioned a card w/ a message about a leaf, the ripple it creates as a metaphor to how many lives David has touched.
See Josie, even if I have my “senior moments” already (read: forgetfulness), your gift is still etched in my mind 
And that’s because the imagery I use personally when it comes to marketing’s diffusion model involves “a pebble thrown in the middle of the pond and watching the ripples it creates”
The pebble represents David initially and then later on the “push” strategies – the promotions that fans and David’s team & management have been throwing in the pond (the market)… the ripples represent the market’s response.
More pebbles, more ripples and the wider the reach of the ripples — widened circles, as your editorial indicates, Rascal..
Kizzi I don’t know if you will agree, but to me, the 1st tipping point was the Gifting Campaign that was such a brilliant move amidst a market awash with technology that can easily download Crush anywhere w/o cost. It required a change in behavior of Angels everywhere. A streak of selflessness & open mindedness from the fans of the host market matched by patience, discipline + humility especially from international fans. Together, it required from both parties that determination, that single-mindedness about making sure that the downloads count in David’s favor. In effect, we said NO to illegal downloads. And I checked the downloads on torrent files of Crush vs David’s torrents on Idol & Pre-Idol performances — and I can say with ease and pride that in that sense, the Gifting Campaign succeeded in minimizing illegal downloads..
Last week, we witnessed the Seton & Columbus Escapades. Many fans found the “Pennies for Charity” Project funny cos it targeted HS – the tweenies. Was it serendipity that the winning school was an all-girl school?! So the “awkward” Archuleta can be clearly seen getting mad love from PYTs. Tell me, is there any kid/boy/guy out there who wouldn’t want to be in his shoes in that moment?! Haha. And to end that day, we get witnessed the Columbus Stampede which involved both HS girls and boys! Beatlemania all over again.
I believe that those 2 events were the 2nd twin-tipping point. If that Columbus escapade is leveraged in this week’s radio tour, then the wider majority of the market can’t help but take notice.

HG you mentioned in the previous thread, while we were waiting for the stampede video to come out, that we could come up with a viral marketing scheme based on that material — am interested to hear more of your thoughts on this.

Rascal, a new post! Sweet (if a little bittersweet – I detect some hesitancy in letting our David fly out of the nest, here in our little cozy corner of the world).
Bookaholic, in the name of all that is holy, please don’t go there. David certainly never does (and he gets goaded all the time to share his political views, but he never does – learn from his example).
Ronaldsf, you suggest we come up with a name for the “Original Arch Angels.” What about The Gabriels – ha ha! (he’s the arch angel who announced the immaculate conception). If David’s star is being born, we can say we were there from the moment of conception (whether it was witnessing WOTWTC or “Heaven”)! Then again, do we really want to set up hierarchies in his fanbase? The only way for David to conquer the world is to have *legions* of angels, and isn’t that what we want? (Hmmm, this is starting to sound almost Apocalyptic – maybe we should be The Michaels instead.)
JR, I did mention the Archumania viral marketing campaign (which was based on Ronald’s satirical post, which isn’t a bad idea, you know!). If we can find a way to cleverly post clips featuring stampedes, screaming girls, limo chasing scenes, etc., this might be something we can market – “join the mania” sort of thing. Let’s think this through!
I know, I know! Since Rascal mentioned the Obama parallel, we can do what his campaign people did! (One of Obama’s major supporters was the founder of Facebook, which is why their campaign has been very successful with the New Media viral video stuff).
Remember how Will.I.Am. did that cool viral video based on Obama’s “Yes, We Can!” speech? What if we did something similar, using one of David’s key songs (not necessarily “Crush”)? Which of his most inspiring and signature songs has the most meaningful message? “Angels”? “Imagine”?
Kindred spirit, the pictures of those fans spark memories of expressions (back then in black and white)of the mania that surrounded Elvis and the Beatles. His total joy in this appearance is so heartwarming. For an “innocent” young man he probably has the world record for the number of women and girls he has hugged. Oh David the world needs you and don’t let us suck you dry.
Panamon, you have expressed my feelings although I am very excited watching the world getting on board. I have watched Jeff’s expressions at some of those radio interviews. He is just so proud of his son. He has known for years how special David is and it must be so affirming to see one after another recognize that spark and embrace it.
Jackyran, you could write a novel about this whole phenomena that is David. David is light, joy and compassion. His fans have mirrored that and their generosity with Stand Up for Cancer, gifting and support for each other has been a true inspiration. I scour the art section of the New York Times every Sunday waiting for David to jump out at me. I have had to let my children go as they moved onto their own lives but I love to peek in every once in awhile. The media is going to make it easier for us to peek into David’s success.
I don’t know what to call us Original Archies other than The Lucky Ones. We have been able to follow each performance, picture, remark, and appearance and get it from day one. What a rush!!!!!

I agree with Ronaldsf, that it’s best that we avoid politics. David has a very diverse fanbase largely because he has qualities that reach out to different types of people. His fan base, from what I can see, has rabid fans who are straight, single, married, gay, religious, non-religious, international, liberal, conservative, and probably lots of combinations of those qualities. It’s inevitable that we won’t all agree, and there will be fans who find it hard to reconcile that he has equally strong fans from other backgrounds. But that diversity is what makes his fanbase so incredible. I’ve met some fans in person already and it’s a blast talking to people from different backgrounds!
So, I read in the previous post and elsewhere that David recently got locked out of his own house AND had to spend the night at a friend’s house sleeping on the floor?
What in the world? ha ha!
He may be on the cusp of conquering the music world, but he’s still a teenager from Utah! It never ceases to amaze me how he waivers back and forth between being a musical and cultural phenomenon … and being an adorkable, spacey 17 year old.

I had an interesting David dream last night. I dreamt that I was at a yard sale held inside someone’s home. The woman was selling trinkets and books. Some of the books were scripture and I noticed a couple books of Mormon on her shelves.
I noticed this one trinket and inquired about it. It was a rather gaudy little china plate that had a cheap imprint of a garden on one side. The woman turned it over and said that the plate actually held oil, and that there was a wick on the other side to burn a small flame. She said that David had just been at the sale and was also interested in purchasing it, but evidently he had changed his mind.
I purchased the trinket, slightly excited that it had also caught his eye, too.
Not sure what the dream means, but would welcome interpretations!
As for the viral marketing idea, I’ve been thinking that some talented person out there should grab some of the recent footage and do a montage set to the Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love”.
I’m about to write to Michelina (the video master) LOL.
oh Rascal, I guess I’ll start my week in a melancholy mood. Yes, as we said before, it is bittersweet witnessing David’s FAST rise to superstardom. After the Meet ‘n Greet with David, I remember walking out with my family and veering off to a corner and just exploding with sobs. They looked at me with a perplexed look on their faces wondering why I would be weeping so badly. I guess it was a mix of things, the anticipation of being with our “divine one”, the fact that it was over, and thirdly the realization that never again would I have the chance to be with David in such an intimate setting. There were only about 50 people in there (Hartford); and David gave you all the time you wanted. Someone on FOD recently said they had never met anyone who touched them so deeply. I would have to think about that one, but I’d say that is pretty close to the truth for me also. I’ve been in the presence of Bishops, Archbishops, friends with many priests (can u tell I’m Catholic, haha?), met with celebrities, politicians, but then there is David. I wish there was a word to describe this, maybe it will come to me in the future, but there isn’t a word to give this “feeling” justice.
Ronaldsf/well I guess I’m just as creative as you this morning. I came up with Archie’s Originals. oh well, we’ll keep on thinkin’ about this one!!

Chickee I think I will cry too after seeing him but I have not been blessed with that opportunity.
So perhaps, it may help that when you feel down while the circle of devotion further widens — which we are now equating with David being farther from our reach — to Think Of Me (Ha-ha!), who like many more fans out there never had the chance to see him and interact with him, at a time when the circle was cozy, warm & almost like an exclusive club.
Hence my mantra: “I need not see or hear him in person… I need not see or hear him in person….”

Since I am essentially an often-lurker here I just wanted to thank you Rascal again for this wonderful blog and for all the insightful and interesting comments that everyone posts here. David has seemed almost like my third child from the beginning and I think that he is going to need our support for life and how great will it be to watch him and his music continue to evolve. The more successful he gets the more he needs his fans/those who love who he is to watch his back! It is fun to watch him convert one dj at a time – they just can’t help but like him when they meet him and we get to see some of their cynicism disappear.
On some of the videos I could swear David took a couple of very QUICK archuglances at some of the girl’s legs..really quick, but no doubt he did..he would have to be dead not to..dang, hundreds of girls with the short skirts everywhere. Poor David, all that temptation and he’s trying so hard distance himself from temptation, ie..drawing shorts on the scantily clad girl on the bag..which some people thought was strange, but I knew betta!
Dang, Freo, I love dream interpretation even tho’ I have no business trying. I will anyway! My take is that he is looking at the option of spreading his messages via the mormon church, thinks about it a moment, and then decides against it. Truly, he can touch more souls with just the music so while he admires the plate, he decides against it. And as for you buying the plate–you’d have that deep connection with him no matter what form his “message” came in, so what the heck, buy the souvenir!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see David as some kind of messiah or anything, just one blessed with enourmous heart and soul who will accomplish great things in his life without even trying.

I am a hard nut to crack, and I have been resistant to share this as I feel that I am a doubting Thomas (I am not the most religious person). This experience has definitely left me quite moved and I am still trying to understand it all.
I had a dream during a midday nap. I don’t do naps but I had not been able to sleep well for some time because of what is happening in my personal life. Here it is in abbreviated form:
The dream took place at David’s home. I was taken there by an agency so that Claudia, David and Daniel would not be by themselves. They were not their current ages but much younger, maybe 5 or 6 years younger. In one instance in the dream David whispers something and I look over and there are little kitties coming into the room and we are oohing and ahhing over them. I find bowls to give them food and water. Another instance he and Daniel get into a tussle and I put my finger on a french window to get their attention and disrupt the quarrel. Several other random things occur.
In another situation, Lupe and some other people are there now and a person that looks like a much older ronaldsf is there singing in some language I don’t identify maybe Spanish. I am sitting crosslegged on the floor because there are no chairs left to sit in listening to ronaldsf sing. It is beautiful singing and it brings David into the room. He sits down next to me on the floor shoulder touching my arm, and then he nestles his head into the crook of my neck and shoulder, nuzzling in trying to get comfortable. I’m surprised by this but feel happy he feels comfortable enough to do that- because I love him and maybe he feels that.
The peace, the trusting physical contact, sweetness of this boy and the soft singing. I am in heaven and then I wake up. I begin to remember back to the beginning of the dream, wanting to remember details, even as they are already slipping away, and as I remember the feeling sitting there next to him, the peace, the absolute bliss in that moment and it’s gone now. And so now I am crying. My soul is bereft. The light and warmth is gone now. ( I cry now as I write this.)
Oh, my heart felt so heavy. I went to the computer to see what new things were going on here at NotingDavid. This is Oct. 21st. It’s David with angel wings on the Banner and then I hear his “Angels” song. Round two of tears. I felt I was getting a message with all of this. And cried some more.
Then I went to my e-mails and there was an e-mail from my cousin, my genealogy buddy, who lives in Clearfield, Utah. She incidentally knows nothing of what is going on with my current situation. She had sent me a prayer (same time as I am having my dream). For those who are not Christian, please do not be offended as this is not to disrespect anyone but to present what transpired. The prayer:
Father, I ask You to bless my friends, relatives and those that I care deeply for, who are reading this right now. Show them a new revelation of your love and power. Holy Spirit, I ask You to minister to their spirit at this very moment. Where there is pain, give them your peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubt, release a renewed confidence through your grace. Where there is need, I ask you to fulfill their needs. Bless their homes, families, finances, their goings and their comings. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
I don’t know anything for sure anymore in this life that I am now living. It is definitely a time for introspection for myself; all the while on this journey with David in his new career. I am still feeling so many things in my “gut” when I go back and revisit what happened on that day. I recognize that it is a very crude way of saying it but it is for me IMMENSE.
I hope that I have not offended anyone. I just wanted to share this with a group who I feel would understand and I don’t know if David is the connection in all of this.
Ram #33, thank you for sharing your story! It is amazing how David gets us in touch with our deepest, happiest feelings of solace and joy.

On a tragic note, the news is now saying that Jennifer Hudson’s nephew was also murdered. I feel so terrible for her right now.
SF and Ronaldsf, our David is growing up and learning fast that he’s got major sex appeal.
Wonder how long it will be before he “finds the right girl”? Hope he’s successful at it, outside of the public view.
Highervibe, your dream interpretation of Freo’s sounds spot on. I was still mulling over it, so glad you took a stab at it first!
Off topic, I just read that a young boy’s body was found, and it may in fact be Jennifer Hudson’s nephew. So, I’m just feeling so sad for her right now. Today is also the day of the funeral of my student, who died last week. So much violence in this world, which is why I’m grateful for David’s light, which I hope expands wider with his rising success.
As much as I’ve been hating on American Idol, I’m very grateful that the show has created a public interest in contestants, so that we feel excited for their successes (like when J-Hud won her Oscar last year) and their tragedies (the outpouring of sympathy and concern for what has happened to her family in Chicago is very touching).
Had Jennifer Hudson not been a celebrity, this family tragedy would have gone unnoticed and registered as just another statistic in the brutally violent streets of Chicago’s South Side.
Anyway, glad to have these new videos and updates of David to lighten the mood.

ram – I’ll contemplate that one further, but in general, here is what I feel is happening. Underneath everything that happens in our lives–from the sublime to the tragic–is an enormous love energy. It is our “home”. Even those who do despicable things are offering those involved a lesson. I don’t know why it comes in such tragic form sometimes, but no matter the form, the effect is that it snaps us back to that underlying love because that is the source of our “juice”, our power in the world. David embodies this love energy in a palpable but mysterious way, even if we don’t think we get it (the “why?”), we GET IT. Our spirit has to “step down” the energy to interpret this underlying reality however it can… so David nuzzling you is the physical representation of his loving spirit comforting you. Spirit is love is David. I hope your dreams continue to comfort you.
ram # 33, thanks so much for sharing your dream. Could it be that those of us who consider ourselves ‘tough nuts to crack’ experience openings in the dream state because our waking defenses are down? It sounds like your subconscious was ready to receive a blessing and also to release some pain. I loved hearing about your dream experience and all of the ‘coincidences’ surrounding it. higherbvibe- yes, I can see all of that. My kiddoes would nuzzle my neck when they were little and there was never a more wonderful, unconditional expression of love than this. Yes, I believe David is love.

Highervibe, that was a thoughtful interpretation to my dream. That angle had not occurred to me, but it makes sense.
Another possible interpretation I’ve thought about today: The gaudy plate represents American Idol, a show that many people see as not high quality and pop-culture-ish, but yet from this show emerged a diamond such as David (represented by the flame somewhat hidden at first, but then revealed). So the show actually was an initial cradle for the flame, which was ultimately revealed. However, in deciding not to buy the plate, he realizes that ultimately the show was a launching pad but that he will be able to make it on his own. I purchased the plate because I avidly watched him on the show, but it was really the flame (David) that I followed.
jackryan..I remember when the Beatles came to the states for the first time..I was JUST a teen myself and into Elvis..not as much the Beatles. There were huge crowds greeting them at the airports. It was really
cra-zeh! Soon I was also caught up in Beatlemania as It was called. It was a wonderful time too, cuz the music scene was in for a shock..They totally changed the world of music. First with the “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s” Then with the more serious, very brilliant lyrics that came later..after the were “enlightened” hahaha!
When David starts his WORLD tour he will be greeted the same way, I think. His music & lyrics will also be brilliant but he won’t have to be “enlightened” cuz he was born that way! He’s going to love going around the world and the world is gonna fall in love with him!
Rascal, you’re so right, THIS is the moment. And LOVE those B&W shots from Seton. They really capture David as a legend-in-the-making.

It’s so strange that this pic makes me giggle and think, “Don’t faint girls, it’s ONLY David” – like we’re pals or something! Floors me, this guy.

I sent in an entry today for Providence’s WPRO-FM contest for a meet and greet party after David’s in studio interview. SQUEEE!
I spent all weekend on the fence on whether I should go and take a spot that maybe would be best used by a teenager.
I don’t know if I have won a spot yet, but I did decide I had as much right to try to meet David in person and anyone. To have him 5 min away, in my small part of the world is too good to pass up.

The 3 wishes part was something different I have not heard anyone ask before. #1 Most important thing in life is to be happy and wishes that his family is happy too…#2 Future is important…one of the most important things is finding the right girl (girls scream). It sounds to me like I-tunes and Walmart have different versions, both with bonus tracks but the actually CD puts more money in David’s pocket than a download I believe. I’ll just buy both if it means getting ALL his songs!
TOfan. I also pre-ordered David’s album from Amazon. But you MUST buy a physical CD at a store So David can profit. Walmart (ugh) will have the bonus track..and pro-buh-blee the Deluxe CD as well, But I have a feeling there will be other stores that will also carry the DELUXE

Well if the rumor is true about the CD being available for preorder on Itunes..why not..so is Cooks. The problem I have with that is the profit margin FOR David is minimal in compared to buying the cd in a store. I don’t understand why the DELUXE wouldn’t be available in stores as well on 11/11? Everyone, of course will want the DELUXE..so I just don’t get why it would only be on iTunes.??

It is a folder that comes with the album you purchase on itunes with some photos. its like the digital version of the physical booklet you get when you buy the album at a record store. Insted of paper it will be on a file for your computer.

I agree with your assesment. I LOVE this version. Once again David does not disappoint and renewed the song yet again. I just feel that the background music at the end covered up his soaring voice a bit too much. I’ll trade the bridge for that anyway – so I’m happy.

I am listening to David’s interview on a NY station this morning. It’s a nice, long interview. I am soooo beyond tired of the dad and girls questions, though! They also asked him if the winner of the contest (a girl) could kiss him on the cheek, but that didn’t fly.

I guess there’s no point in pleading that politics and religion be excluded from this discussion. I know certain people here are dying to equate David and Obama and/or to attribute some kinds of supernatural qualities to David.
In addition, I find terms like the “ORIGINAL ARCHIE’S COALITION” to be so exclusionary that I’m surprised that people who are always supposedly wanting to act “like David” (and reminding others to do so) would use them. It reminds me of the poster a few weeks back who posted and included the name of her/his blog and then said, “but we don’t want any new members because we’re such a tight little group”, thus stating that new members would be unwelcome. I thought that was the most offensive thing I’d heard from one of David’s fans.
Is that how David’s fan base is developing; as an exclusionary set of “cliques” who don’t welcome new fans? I’ve seen the same said on FOD and on other blogs. I don’t care how jokingly it may be said here or there, I think it’s a bad message to send to people who didn’t know of or take notice of David until now and are now searching the internet for a place to discuss David and to “belong”. Might they subconsciously feel rejected by him and so reject him? What about the lonely, vulnerable high school kid who needs a place to belong in spite of not being an “original” fan?
How much of this exclusionary talk is based in real desire to exclude? Will everyone now registered receive her/his own number based on order of registration (or will there be additional qualifications?) until some arbitrary limit is reached? What then for that lonely teenager who just discovered David on YouTube?
