On to other matters….for the next single, I think it should be one of the more unique songs on the album, which for me, are now “Barriers” and “Your Eyes Don’t Lie”, either of which could be big hits if given enough exposure. It’s funny because after hearing the snippets I was nervous about these two, but now I love them! They are kinda weird and quirky, but that’s what could make them stand out on pop radio. David needs a bigger hit than Crush for the album to take off.

Also TMH seems to be too much for girls…I think Barriers or YEDL could be appealing to guys as well. YEDL would also be a great concert song.

LittleMushroom#21, I agree, YEDL will be HOT live. I hear so much hit-potential on this CD it’s hard to choose. But I’ve already told one friend that if My Hands doesn’t become a huge hit, I’ll put my CD in the microwave and eat it for dinner.

In picture #6, he was singing You Can….I melted into a puddle. He has guitar players and keyboard player and drums. The band is really good, I think all of you are going to be really pleased. They sound just beautiful together. I did tell him to stand next to me to see if he grew. I told him, I think he did. He’s the same as me 5’6″. He actually looks taller than Jeff now and a little more muscle on him too.

Wow! I am speechless. I just finished listening ‘to be with you’ for the second time and I eer….I’m in tears. I have chills all over. Beeeautiful. Heartfelt, I can see him playing the piano and everybody holding candles or cellphones or whatever lights up. I can just see it. So emotional, his voice so penetrating, so..so…
I think I need the paddles. Juliebug, you are the only one here tonight. A hug at least!!

I am listening to You Can again for the umpteenth time. His timing in singing is impeccable. I like all his songs but my crooner roots are kicking in big here. To Be With You just slays me. He is so smooth. “Here I am looking at the moon tonight” It just slides. Of course my favorite instrument (piano) just puts it over the top for me. He sings harmony so beautifully. It soothes my soul. My daughter is getting married in the spring. She will receive this album. I am curious what she will have to say about this song. It certainly mirrors her relationship.

Everytime Your Eyes Don’t Lie begins I just break into a big smile. I first think of the Andy Griffith show which brings back warm fuzzies. Then he takes it beyond-really like it. The beat is infectious.

By the way, djb, I cleared my cache as I wanted to see the sculpture. Ah yes indeed.!!! I have to be honest and admit the biceps of my husband caught my eye before I began to appreciate his brillant mind.

Ok, after listening to the tracks for the nth time , here’s my review of the album as a whole:

1st off congratulations to David & Jive. Given the hurried & harried pace this album was produced, this debut album is quite remarkable. Throw all the bubblegum pop scenarios out of the window – this album means business!

In terms of musicality, there is honestly nothing to dislike about the album, except for the fact that there is only 12 tracks in it

As a whole, the album represents a diverse 44 minutes & 41 seconds (that is, if you can help yourself backtrack or rewind certain parts of the songs!) of auditory pleasure, emotional
connection and at several points, melodic surprise. Yet it is a solid and cohesive undertaking, especially for a freshman outing. It has been said that David recorded 25 songs altogether, eight (8) of which he had to write about two (2) weeks before the production deadline, when some of the tracks were not at par with his standard or expectation. If this is not an exaggeration, then the fans can fully rejoice with their “Angel’s” artistic integrity.

Individually, I didn’t find any track boring. I can hazard that a number of tracks are hit candidates which may come at par, if not surpass the records already achieved by the album’s carrier single, Crush. David lived up to his word when he said that there would be something for all fans in this album. Indeed there is variety, yet this is a solid and cohesive maiden offering. That only a quarter of the album belongs to the ballad category flies in the face of naysayers during Idol that Archuleta is boring and is simply a crooner. And if the 2 tracks David co-wrote in the main album are any indication of the surprise that awaits us, the bonus tracks penned by Archuleta himself would indeed be something to look forward to. Here’s hoping some more soul-groovin’ sounds in them bonus tracks.

Technically, I am hoping that the finals cut of the album (since the Nov5 version are low-quality, promotional webrips only) would clearly bring out David’s voice. I find that certain portions of certain tracks are over-produced or over-mixed. I will go to an extreme example — take a listen to any Linkin’ Park song. The music and instruments never overpower the vocals. And to think that Linkin’ Park is a heavy rock band. This is probably what Jive should be careful about. Perhaps given more time, this technical aspect would have been better handled.

Which brings me to the most important ingredient in this album — THE VOICE. The song selection displays his wide range and versatility. Am glad to note of his judicious use of licks and stylizing. Am doubly glad that he has become comfortable with his falsettos and his head tones are fantastic. I find this simply amazing because his chest tone is too die for. Most singers would have a fully developed falsetto and/or head tone but would have trouble with controlling his chest tone. The reverse is also true. Almost 18, his voice is still changing. So his new-found low registers are heavenly.

But if there is ever a voice that would soothe the savage beast, it is Archuleta’s. It glides; it grooves; it soars; it growls. The voice teases; yearns; caresses. It fills up the cavernous places in one’s mind & heart. One minute, you find your soul pierced, the next, your spirit, tickled. It is a voice that makes you cry, smile and giddy all at the same time. It is a voice that compels us to get in touch with our inner selves, that beautiful, hopeful part. A voice that makes one a believer — for some, once again.

Plainly, what this album has achieved is demonstrate that what was showcased in AI S7 was simply the teaser — the tip of the iceberg. And given that this is just the debut offering, we can say that that iceberg is submerged more deeply than anticipated.

Now, something should be said about how this album was promoted. When David said there will be variety and different styles — he was not kidding cos that’s exactly what we get. Again, David lived up to his word. But that the album was never oversold, displays the kind of artist we are privileged to witness. Very Archuleta.

Self-titled, the album lives up to its eponym, who, in all probability will be the most beloved yet misunderstood, if not underestimated Idol alumnus, yet.

Take a bow, David Archuleta. Bravo!

The opening scene of an old time spaghetti western with Clint Eastwood riding his horse down the empty main street of an old prairie town in a dust storm…

I will have to reserve judgement on the rest of the songs for a later date.
