I recall an interview recently, and it was the only one of its kind I saw, where David was talking away, and the interviewer said “let’s ask your Dad Jeff what he thinks about this” and David let his father start talking. Well, it wasn’t long before David decided his dad had said enough, and David, very assertively yet gentlemanly, took back control of the interview and was back on point without anyone really ever knowing what just happened. It was quite remarkable.

or how about the one with the young gal interviewing David outside the Arch building, and evidently he wasn’t liking the direction it was going, and he decided to interrupt her and said, pointing to the building across the street, “Look, Arch.” Little David, as Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber referred to him, ain’t so little anymore.

Well, I touched his skin, not once, but twice. and didn’t want to let go, until my daughter dragged me away and said “ok Mom” it’s getting late and Dad is tired.

I had Meet ‘n Greet passes. there were only 50 people there, so I shook hands with David and grabbed his forearm with my other hand, and Lord he’s got soft skin. and all my e-family friends at the time (Aug. 8th, Hartford) told me to make sure I looked out for the nutmeg/cinammon David aroma that everyone heard he had. so when we were leaving I put my hand sort of on his neck, and said bye David, take good care of yourself, and he smiled and said “aww thanks, you too.” Then I walked out of the room, went off to a corner, and started crying huge sobs cause I was so overcome at being with him, and knew I’d never get the chance to see him again in such an intimate setting. it’s a day I’ll never forget if I live to be 100.

Great thread !!! I could not love this video more ! Kathy Griffen is just completely great— I am a huge fan !!! Yes… she is nasty and irreverent but that is what makes her so … FUNNY as heck in my opinion.( watched the funniest concert of hers a few weeks ago … she is so evil–in a great way– it is amazing!) David was jaw dropping great with her.. I was watching this over and over at snarky’s, then decided to check in here to see if anything new was up. I LOOOVE this video. David is like a cork. Despite his natural shyness and the insanity of what he’s been thrown into in the last six months or so, he always floats. He always finds a way to ride high. He truly amazes me.

I didn’t chip in on the last thread about Cook coz it was such a long thread, I didn’t think anyone would read my input. I did have a personal experience with Cook that I’m ready to share. I’ve kept it to myself since the Pittsburgh concert, but the way Cook’s been talking, I don’t see any need to keep my conversation with him under wraps any longer.

Just coz I am terribly long-winded I’m going to preface my story with my take on Cook. I think that he’s a basically decent, regular, down-to-earth guy. He may have gotten off track for a bit or bought into the idea that in order to be a successful rocker, he had to project a edgy image. That may be why he appeared so arrogant and crusty at the beginning of Idol. He was wearing a rocker facade that he felt was necessary for success. The more time he spent with David, however, the more he seemed to change. Not that I’m a good judge of that coz I wasn’t paying any attention. I’m just looking at it after the fact. From Shop Around when David caught my eye, I literally could not see another contestant. Brooke a little bit out of the corner of my eye maybe; the rest were just irritating filler, I confess, until David would be on camera. I would typically leave the room and go work in the kitchen until I thought David would be shown.

Looking back, there really does seem to be a huge difference in how Cook presented himself between the beginning and the end of Idol. I attribute the majority of Cook’s transformation to David, a smidge to Brooke perhaps. I really cannot comprehend someone spending a lot of time around a person so genuine, endearing, likable, and unapologetically himself as David is and remain unaffected. I think Cook realized through watching and interacting with David that despite what any really “hip/cool” detractors may say, being sincere and genuine is endearing. It’s a comfortable fit on a body and soul. It sells. I see him being touched by David’s wisdom and heart, shedding the facade, and embracing who he really is. Of course, Cook’s not as consistently wonderful as David, but who is now that Mother Teresa has passed away? haha Let’s face it. Very few people in the world are like David! Cook, though, is a good guy in my estimation. I’m taking David’s word for it.

I do believe Cook loves David very much. He’s probably a teeny bit conflicted coz he won Idol but recognizes that it’s unlikely he’ll be anywhere near as successful as David will be. I do think he wishes David well, while hoping he, himself, doesn’t totally fall on his face. He’s carting the Idol crown around as he feels himself sinking a bit in the mud. I don’t think he wants to undermine David or that he wishes him ill, or that he secretly harbors bad feelings toward David. I don’t. Anytime Cook is around David, he’s got his hand on his shoulder or around his neck, looks and smiles at him with affection that just glows. I don’t think he could be so consistently positive if the basic feelings weren’t there.

That’s my take on the situation. A good part of why I feel that way besides what I’ve witnessed in their interactions, the look on Cook’s face when David is near, the ArchuCook moments on the catwalk, etc. is my conversation with Cook in Pittsburgh which I am FINALLLLLY getting to.

Here’s what happened. When I watched the Larry King interview after Idol when he had all the Idols on, he asked his little high school yearbook category questions–who is the ‘class clown’ (Michael Johns), ‘most beautiful couple (Brooke and Dave White), etc. I was suddenly JACKED up just waiting on pins and needles for another category that is ALWAYS asked…but it never came! Letdown! When I got to the Pittsburgh after concert party, despite being one of the first few through the door, I found David thickly surrounded by a crowd of adoring fans. Cook was across from him and had three people near him who quickly left. I decided to take the opportunity to ask Cook what he would have answered had the King question been asked that I had anticipated. I went up and explained what I was thinking. “I’m really curious what everyone–PARTICULARLY you–would have answered if Larry King had asked you to name someone in your AI class who was ‘MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED’. Without hesitation, Cook answered. He said, “I’d like to think me. I’d like to think all of us. But, if I had to pick one, I’d have to say Archie”. There wasn’t a soul near us. No one to impress. Just an honest response. Of course, I agreed. I did tell Cook that I’d been impressed with how well he did in concert, and that I thought he had a good shot at success. I wished him well and left. I’ve rarely if ever repeated our exchange because I thought it was very open-hearted and honest of him to admit that David is the truly outstandingly talented one in the bunch. I thought it would be tacky of me to undermine Cook by spreading our conversation all over the internet. I don’t think there is any reason to hold back now, because Cook’s saying it himself on the net. Like: “I think David A. is destined for great things – he has the talent to pull it off,” 25-year-old David C. tells In Touch. “If my record flops, maybe he’ll need a guitar player!” and the EW interview when the guy asks if he thinks he and David will still be compared by fans 20 years from now and he says, “If you put me in the same sentence with David Archuleta, I’ll be fine.”

I feel good toward Cook. I think he’s in a kind of embarrassing position coz he won Idol and is expected to do exceptionally well, and yet he and we know David will be the big star, not him. I am sure he doesn’t want to fall on his face, but I don’t think he wants to hurt David or see anything bad happen to him, either. If you really distrust Cook, my thoughts probably won’t convince you otherwise, but I really do think Cook loves David and is a true friend to him.

So, there’s my two cents.

I saw the one she did in Concord Pavilion last July were she dissed a number of Idols. I won’t post it anymore cos am sure some of you will react negatively. Kathy’s thing is irreverence so she should not be taken seriously, otherwise you will have a meltdown. Like in this vid, see how DA just laughed at her & turned on that Archugaze & ArchuStance – was that a thud from Kath? Haha.

That is sad about those e-mails. When there comes a time when David makes some decisions that they may not agree with, these are the fans that may make it difficult for him. David is going to have to be very strong and have a sure sense of self.

You are right Freofan. 17 year olds, going on 18 have many decisions in front of them no matter who they are. It is my belief that David either knows what he wants or has the where-with-all to figure it out. He is definitely balancing his many diverse and at times opposing interests and admits he is still deciding who he is as an artist. And the albatross around his neck of being “perfect” is HUGE and HEAVY!

I often think of the concept of “unconditional love” and how hard that is to actually live especially with my own children–it definitely taught me many of my own failings and illusions. Frequently, I would overlay my desires on my children. When I finally let go of the cherished notion that my children were here to fulfill my dreams, and fully embraced and practiced in word and deed that I was here to help my children fulfill their dreams, it suddenly got so simple and our relationship became more than I ever dreamed it could be!

So, too, with David. There are fans who practice “unconditional love” and want what he wants and will support him as he grows as an artist; and, then, there are fans who think he should be “this” or “that” and fulfill their dreams, their illusions.

A favorite saying of mine is “The WORK is easy, the PEOPLE are hard!”

Oh, how I love that ‘moment’ when David took control of the conversation with Kathy. I’m one who really feared what would happen in any interactions between the two of them. Kathy’s humor is just too wicked for me (I’m way too sensitive. Didn’t ever like Don Rickles, either.) But I underestimated David. Which means that once again, he has impressed me. Never seems to stop.

About the discussion of the e-mails. While I am very sorry, Rascal, that you have to deal with such things, I think it’s just a matter of them landing in the wrong blog. They have a right to feel what they feel about David and who THEY believe he is. He’s quite an enigma, isn’t he? Super-talented/inexperienced, sexy/inexperienced (LOL), religious/open-hearted, deeply connected with his audience/somewhat protected from the world. Kathy Griffin is caustic and mean at times but can be hysterically funny. But someone who I think is even funnier is Bonnie Hunt, she’s an improv genius. Because she’s sweet and nice she tends to get underestimated … hmmm.

i think that 1:22 moment is a survival moment. david was feeling very uncomfortable at kathy’s bombardment.

we’ve seen this before from david. sometimes when he feels too focused on and not being at ease about it, he’d turn the question to the interviewer. ppl do that. it’s normal.

i don’t see this as power, or turning the table… it feels a bit creepy to microscopically look at david’s every gesture and interpret it in this manner.

Brooklyndawn, I hear what you are saying. I hope that someday David can put them all to rest. It is going to take a lot of strength on his part.

MYYK and Evey, thanks for explaining those numbers! And, TOfan, that’s wonderful news about his debuting at #2 (keep in mind he was up against a country CD, and country will always sell more than pop – it is what it is).

These are respectable numbers, and I’m so proud of our David!

Earlier this morning, itunes showed Cook at #1, so even though I had said something about wanting David to “crush” this competition, I realize that RCA/AI/19E (and Cookie) are just too invested in making sure this doesn’t happen. So, I will follow David’s lead and not get caught up in who sells more. David, obviously, is so excited about his big debut, he had to post twice on his myspace blog, telling us fans how awesome we are!

But, I’m still happy to rip into Cook whenever I get the urge. Especially if I’m speaking on behalf of some of you (thanks, ojs759).

Heavyblow, I think we’re all aware what David did at that 1:22 mark was a survival strategy. We’re just saying that we find it sexy!

Joner#188, David is going to be a fantastic lover. Uh-oh, I hope Rascal doesn’t get bombarded with nasty emails because I’m projecting into his future relationship(s).

1. He pays attention to details.
2. He makes eye contact.
3. He doesn’t do “aloof”.
4. He’s a “perfect gentleman” (I think that’s what Kristy Lee Cook said about him).
5. He’s a “Good Man” (you know, the kind blues singers say is hard to find – he’s the one who’s hard to find).
6. His hands are BIG.

Whoever the girl is who catches his eye, will not only be lucky but worthy (I think we’ve seen that David is also a good judge of character and music).

OJs, well I’d guess that the overwhelming majority of notingdavid posters find you quite worthy of being called a David fan. You’re one of the best in my book.

I was very emotional yesterday — partly due to the incorrect projections from HDD (and my need to find a comfortable place between expectation and an actually-terrific reality) and partly because I can’t get to a Jingle Ball concert and am faced with a likely withdrawal from daily David observances. (Got the music, though!) I wonder if perhaps Isabella is also feeling emotional?

slvrfox – A little perspective and a little patience, please. This is only the beginning. David is doing exceedingly well. It will take time, perhaps years, for the “the rest of the world” to catch up to the depth of understanding we have for him. Personally, I would be much more concerned if the world really did stop on its axis for him right now, at such an early point in what is sure to be a very long career. He is very young. He has had very little life experience. Spectacular success should not be piled on him so soon. There is plenty of time for that. Besides, commercial success is not the measure of achievement for David himself, and neither should it be for his truest fans. The measure of success should be that he remains true to himself and to his work, and that he is allowed to continue to pursue it. Although I think its fine to follow charts and sales numbers as a kind of sporting interest, that is by no means where the joy of being a David Archuleta fan lies. The joy of being a David Archuleta fan lies in the heart connection he creates in his song.

slvrfox: i’m not qualified to answer all your questions completely. i can tell you what i’ve learned thru other AAs/ Archies & thru perusing industry publications. David sold very well for his 1st week debut album. Current music sales climate is much lowers in album sales then it used to be. particularly pop music & a label like JIVE. Look at 2 of David’s labelmates, Chris Brown & Pink. Both very popular with very high selling singles that have topped the charts. Both very well known & considered sucessful. Their last albums, on the 1st week, sold at $150k & 180k respecctively. so, david has done very well. also, on jordin’s debut last year, she sold $115 her 1st week and is just now nearing platinum at apprx 949,000. that’s one year total album sales. so, you can see that David is right on track & doing well.
as for #2, that’s great! there’s no way he could have outsold taylor and no one expected that.

as to what happens now….well, fanblast is not really an issue. We can get all info from FOD & snarkies as to Davids appearances, etc. The next single, Touch My Hand is rumoured to be released on 12/9, only a few weeks away. We will need to support David with that just as we did with CRUSH. Request, request, request! David is performing at the Macys Parade this month & will be performing at many concerts thru December (The Jingle Ball series). He has mentioned a tour early next year. i’m sure he will be promoting & performing TMH. hopefully, we’ll see him on Idol to sing that or his next release…..

so, there’s going to still be a lot going on. as i said, FOD is great for that info. and now even davidarchuleta.com is listing his appearances. david still needs our support – now more than ever.

heavyblow – #193 – I think you’re getting at two different issues here. Yeah, survival moment, sure, but there are innumerable ways to manage such a thing, and not everyone has the wherewithal to do it so capably and and so effectively. The point is that I think most people would have expected David to geek his way through it with nervous laughter, but he chose a much more assertive tactic instead.

The issue of over-analyzing every gesture is a separate one. I’ve only watched the video twice, and I formed my opinion about it on the first pass. No microscope needed.

JR..haha! That’s pretty much what I thought about David’s look..He was enraptured by rascal..and I told rascal just that..more than once in fact. That photo appears in hundreds of videos on YouTube..

yes, 2 issues i made. idk. what i’ve noticed in a lot of david’s interviews that he tends to divert attention away from himself when he’s nervous or even when he’s not that nervous. once an interviewer asked what kind of food he likes, he answered “thai food. it’s amazing. have you ever had thai food?” after feeling that he reacted overtly enthusiastic. in recent interviews, whenever he finds a chance he would divert attention away from his own album and talk about cook’s upcoming release.

so i don’t see the “power” thing in this griffin’s exchange. it’s his longstanding m.o. yes, in this exchange, he does straighten up his body and puts one hand on his hip to appear more maturely/manly b/c how cornered he was.

maybe it’s just me, but i never see david as a weakling who would cower in all difficult situations. at “worst”, he babbles a lot and gets inarticulate. he has a nervous energy, but that doesn’t mean he’s intimidated.

so that moment doesn’t seem all that revelatory to me, like OMG our boy has gained strength!

as for david being sexy. well, he’s a sensitive, very good-looking, awfully talented 17 y.o. who’s about to turn 18. of course, that reeks sexiness in all sorts of fashion.

2nd issue. i just find it uncomfortable that we would jump up and down whenever he exhibits that quality in an unconscious behavior. (on idf, some are saying that he was hitting on griffin. yeah. right.)

i would create a whole blog had he *consciously* injected a sexy element into a performance of his. i feel here he was trying to stay alive under the wrath of griffin, and ppl are salivating at it. this is an uninvited reaction from a 17 y.o., especially one as goodie-two-shoe as daivd.

it feels like we are objectifying him.

Speaking for myself, I am not objectifying David’s interaction with Kathy; rather, I am rejoicing that he stepped into his power–did he do it knowingly, IDK–often we step into our power intuitively until we learn to turn that power on and off; and, I speculate that David is a high intuitive in terms of his bursts of behavior and activities in high stress situations.

And, Kathy, during AI, called him autistic and a half-tard, and the video remains on WFTW with the nastiest comments (only time I was there cause I had never heard of VFTW before.) So, for me, this is sweet jubilation for David!

slvrfox, David’s career as a “new artist” has just begun! We’ve only discovered him this year! A #2 debut, with $180,000 sales, is a wonderful place to be! Trust me: David is fine, and I’m sure Jive is happy with these numbers. As Rascal said, we can’t expect him to launch that fast. He’d crash and burn, for sure. “Slow and steady wins the race.”

We’re at such a wonderful place, to witness David growing up and maturing musically and physically. I only see good things coming!

One more thing about the David and Kathy video. I emailed it to a friend of mine, who’s worried sick about an upcoming job interview. For whatever reason, she does horribly at these things, which is why she’s working at a gig where she’s not happy. Her last job interview was disastrous, and it was because the interviewers were absolutely atrocious, petty, and lacking in social skills. She’s not disappointed she didn’t get the job, but the experience was so bad, it has traumatized her by undermining her confidence.

Believe it or not, I sent her this video of David as interview prep because, as I told her, “watch and learn.” I told her what was so effective about David, and what she needs to keep in mind when she’s on her interview, is
1. Be yourself.
2. Even under intense interrogation, answer truthfully and listen for opportunities to win over and influence people.
3. This is key: find an “in” in the conversation where you get to capitalize on your strengths (singing in David’s case) and engage the other person (the smile, the eye contact, the shift in body language).

So, yeah, I think there is tons of learning experience here. Of course, my friend (who has not caught the Archubug) thinks my ODD is embarrassing (like I care), but she does appreciate Kathy’s wicked sense of humor. And, yes, she was impressed that David held his own (I believe she took notes to prepare for her upcoming interview).

HEAVYBLOW on #218 – Objectifying? Nope. Am celebrating his use of resources innate in him, when called for. Take note that at 1.22, the minute he turned on that “charm” — what was the topic he called for? His arsenal – music!

It may be Kathy’s myspace and her interview but as far as music is concerned — its his domain and his whole being stepped up. Once there, he exudes confidence and nobody can deny that confidence is quite sexy. Is that such a bad thing?

I’ve been saying that all along, but have been afraid to voice my opinion for fear of hurting other writers. I think David has been riding on the coat tales of our David from the very beginning of AI. What a great place for him to hide. Your right about David hanging out with Brooke and Jason, their kind,sweet caring and eay going like David. All David wants to do is SING..Bless him.. People can say what they want but he’ll remain the same and true to himself.
It’s very hard for me to express the admiration I have for this young man innocence and decency is above reproach. The kindness he shares for all those soul who are lost, well it’s just so inspiring to watch him, I mean I only want the very best for him. What happens next? Concerts, more singles topping the charts, more great articles, and photo spreads, more fun, more David!

I am so not worried about David, neither do I worry about his future. I am not worried about the naysayers, they will always be with us, but David continues to give them less and less material.

The Kathy encounter was pure genius. Of course he was in survival mode, but how he survived was what was incredible for me. This is one tough chick. He caught her flatfooted, and she, nor I was expecting it. That was a revelation to me.

I have never thought that David was naive, or needed protection, he is a very bright young man. I am not making this occurance any more important that it was, but I have seen Kathy eat far more savvy persons up alive, with relish. That he turned the tables on her, in a very potent manner was sexy.

I know folk have issue with labeling him as such, but they seem to put a bad lable on that word. Actually it’s a good word. It’s just another weapon in the human arsenal, some have it, some don’t. Some get it, some won’t.

Now I am really not worried about David. He was the question on Jeopardy! I didn’t hear it all, but the person got the answer correct! David is slowly seeping into pop culture. It’s all good!

I’m already anticipating that, at the end of the year, when we get our Top 10, Top 20, etc. lists for 2008, his name will be counted along with:

Usain Bolt

Hillary Clinton

Now, whether he’s counted as No. 2 (his magic number, for surely he won’t top Obama) or No. 10, who knows, but he will be on many of these lists, I’m sure of it!

THE ALBUM is so diverse, it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, that David can sing anything, pop, r&b, ballads and rock too. His next album, “THE ALBUM 2″ is going to be fantabulous!! I just know he’s writing songs for it all the time..as I’ve said, he finds lyrics all around him. I’m anxious to experience “his life” this last year through the music he will creat for THE ALBUM 2!! We got a taste of it with “WORKS FOR ME”!

Bonnie Hunt told David that she had talked to many people that had meet him and they had only really great things to say about him.

Has anybody that has meet David not come away with a confirmation of how truly full of goodness he is, or surprised by experiencing a change of heart after meeting him.

How does that happen? Obviously there many reasons but to me I think the thing that comes through is this, It is alot easier to like someone who likes you. People love David, because David loves people. Of course the voice is important, but even without the music he is a beautiful person on the inside and the outside.

I think that if part of why I love him so much. It might sound corny, but I really feel his love and it warms my soul.

tessie269- I agree totally. In one of the posted interviews above David is asked how he remembers fans he met once when he sees them again weeks/months later at a different event. He said something like, “..just try to remember the memory you had with someone…build a relationship- start a friendship from the very first moment…” People can feel his desire to connect with them and they respond to it.

HV – the most interesting to me were Jason Mraz’s and Beyonce’s…. specifically the comments me makes about the vids. With the Mraz vid he reveals how he feels about his critics. With Beyonce’s he reveals how he views women. The boy likes strong women, don’t you think? haha!

Well, SF, you know, I didn’t exactly want to rub it in his face.

Aw man, just the thought of a SOLO venue (Sigh). Especially since this upcoming concert means I still have to wait through two acts before I get to HIM. So I called up and found out tickets won’t go on sale until this weekend, which means this just got announced last night.

And, of course, David is performing last! Don’t you just love how the “new artist” is already being treated like a veteran?

Wish me luck, SF! Tickets don’t go on sale until the weekend, but I will do my best to get a few. Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me!

I loved the Bonnie Hunt interview, sliding down the pole and performance. I think it was one of David’s best and Bonnie was certainly taken by him. The Kathy clip was awesome. I love this video so much for all the reasons you all posted already. and you’re all right it was masculine and sexy. I caught that moment right away when I saw it and rejoiced. David actually, consiously, took over. David has a great sense of humor and handled himself great. I love to hear him laugh. I also loved the way, at the end, that he did take control. He must have melted Kathy’s heart when he gave her “the look” because at the end she said to him “You are adorable” when she hugged him. I don’t think she could have continued with him looking at her like that. Those of you who have met David and got that “look” can imagine what it did to her. .

Evey, if it makes you feel better, I went to MY Walmart today and they had restocked David’s CD. They had 20, I think, on that first day, and the next time I went they had 3 left. Today the rack was full. They also had plenty of Cook’s CDs available, and the two stacks were placed side-by-side.

I went to the Target and found David not on the new releases but in with the other CDs in pop, and they had a pretty full display right at eye-level.
