What a Rush: The Archuletor in Late Night
Okay, he was nervous, which makes his lower register a little tremulous, but he did great, he looked great, and it was a thrill to see him in his rightful place in front of a cool band performing before an appreciative audience. I’m totally diggin’ the more rocked-out feel of Crush as performed live, which has very exciting implications for what the album will sound like on tour — that is, better: more stripped-down, less over-produced. David did some really terrific studio work on his first time out (reviews are coming, people; you couldn’t possibly think I have nothing to say about the album, now, could you?) but David has always gotten to another dimension live in concert. That, of course, is the mark of a true talent, a real musician, a bona-fide performer. No studio concoction he.
It’s a pretty daunting proposition to put your first band together, rehearse for a week, and have your premiere gig be on The Tonight Show, gosh dang it. Oh my heck, considering that, the kid nailed it.

I was so proud of him last night! He was nervous, particularly in the beginning half of the song, but who wouldn’t be? I would have been a total wreck! Cook said that he was almost throwing up backstage before SNL. These are big shows!
But he got stronger during the performance and he’ll only get better and better with more live experience as a solo artist on bigger shows. He looked great in front of the band and loved his outfit. He sounds great live!
Good morning all! David was awesome last night! And, yeah, I expect nervousness. The Tonight Show is a very big deal. This is how an artist (musician, comedian, actor, etc.) knows that they have arrived, and yes, our David has arrived.
And, he’s looking fierce and fabulous up there on stage – Wowee! David is the hotness! I’m so proud as an Original Archie. *sniff.*
I love every word, Rascal. I was really nervous for him last night-not sure why. My palms were sweating. But he just worked it through. It looked like he was trying to shake it off with his feet and pump up the adrenalin and then he got there. On tour he started with piano (a familar place) then went to stairs, then interacted with the fans before he stood in front of the mike and poured it all out. I am so proud of this young man. He is the best. I am curious about his band. It will be great when we find out who they are.
Yes Rascal we are excited about what you are going to say about the album. But take your time. The words will reasonate around the world.
Leave it to me not to tell that dang DVR to go an extra 5 minutes. It cut off as he started his second verse…*lies down on the floor kicking and pounding fists on floor*
Hopefully I can catch the end of it on the tube which won’t be optimal, but hey, it’s better than nuttin’. I hear the ending was pretty cool too – he put a little new Archu-spin on it.
Just a quick recap before I head of to a busy day at work. I pobably won’t be able to check back here for a couple of hours. But just wanted to revel in the joy of seeing David on Jay Leno.
I was so fortunate to be in the audience on this momentous occasion. I happened to check the Snarkies site from work about 10:30 am yesterday, and someone was offering a ticket for the Jay Leno taping. I snapped it up in no time, took the rest of the day off, and drove up with a complete stranger. (She sounded great over the phone and we really hit it off. We went to dinner after and met some other fans in the restaurant across the street from NBC studios. We had a great time sharing our love-o-David. I am soooo grateful.)
During the commercial break, right before David’s performance, we could see the cameras being relocated and pointed at a wall to the left of the stage. I thought David was going to come out and sing in front of the wall.
Also, during this set up time, Jeff Archuleta, accompanied by 2 women and a young man showed up – standing at the back of the audience.
When the time came for the performance, the wall was raised (like a curtain) and revealed David and the band.
David looked great – thinner in person. He actually sounded better live – the music balance seemed better to me. The crowd response was very good. After he was finished and they went to commercial, Jay was still standing with him and talking to him. It was at that time that David was shaking his hands and it appeared he was saying ‘whew’. He looked relieved.
After the show, as David was leaving the stage, people were calling out to him and he was waving to various sections of the audience.
We weren’t able to get autographs before or after, and the ticket information said ‘no cameras’. Plus, before entering the studio, we had to go through a metal detector and someone was lookikng though handbags. So, no photos or videos, but a great memory and some new-found friends. All-in-all a fabulous experience!
I so admire David’s dedication, talent, artistry, and incredible courage. Well done!
So true RASCAL. I was typing this when I saw the new thread coming up — good thing I did a copy-select-all! Otherwise I would have to retype everything, as in previous occasions
I said in my last post in the previous thread that I find the different reactions from across the fan boards at best, quite amusing. Cos I dunno what the heck others were expecting. Like this is not the 1st time that any singer had performed live on a late show. And as you pointed out, putting up a band and rehearsing with them under a week – and we all know that wasn’t full time, even — and putting yourself out there in your 1st major prime time gig would really be daunting. Cook himself said “I remember just being really nauseous and dry heaving, I was so scared…it’s a different vibe from Idol for sure…”
To those who found David hoarse, esp in the beginning — it wasn’t that. It was his new low registers cos his voice is still in changing — and it will still be in flux till his early 20s, as with all other boys growing into young men. Couple that with his tentative nervousness at the start, those used to to the AI mode would understandably be disappointed. I have to admit he was pitchy – no, let me be specific – he was a half-note flat in the 1st chorus – that yeah-yehey-yehey part… but he picked it up from then on.
To those who found him over powered by the band, I have several things on that:
(1) At Leno’s, the echo is not set up as high as with AI. In fact, in other more discriminating outings, there would be no echo at all. That is a test of how good sounding a singer’s voice is. If it has body. In David’s case tonight, it wasn’t bad. In fact I should say, he was good.
(2) It was a LIVE performance with a LIVE band — so I don’t understand why others expect the studio feel or version of Crush.
To those who couldn’t understand why David or the band was trying a rock vibe to the song — it wasn’t rock! That was the original beat of Crush except that because it was live, you get the organic feel of it. And for me, am lovin’ it!
To those who would have preferred an acoustic rather than the “rock” version — well, David is still introducing Crush. Am one who would looooove to hear Crush unplugged cos am sure it will be fantastic but definitely not on its inaugural. A stripped down version is introduced if the wider market is already familiar with the original arrangement. That song is known by heart in Planet Archuleta alone.So it is obligatory to perform it closest to the record version.
To those who loved every bit of it — who can argue with love or those in love, right angels?? haha
David was poised and matured in this performance. The way he looked at the camera – full of confidence. With more practices, we have sooo much to look forward to on his solo tour

jackryan4DA — Due to your comment I went back and watched the performance again because I didn’t recall any flat notes, and I am extremely sensitive to that. There weren’t any. He was pitch perfect throughout. His lower register was simply not as smooth and rich as it usually is, which is a direct result of a lack of relaxation. It was due entirely to nervousness. But he overcame it quite successfully. In fact, if you listen to the performance without watching it (because we all know him so well that we can see his anxiousness as well as hear it, which only accentuates it), the performance is really quite good. David has the ability to take things to a truly magical place, something few performers can ever do, so that when he only does really well instead of exceptionally well, we tend to count it as a miss. I think, as I said, considering the circumstances, this was a hit.
Rascal I totally agree with you. I have listened to it over and over and if I close my eyes he sounds amazing. If I watch him I can see how nervous he is and I notice a difference. I think he was a ROCK STAR last night,

I’m with you, Rascal. WOW, just, WOW. I watched it again this morning cause I think I was more nervous than David last night and it was even better than I remembered. I think I caught one partial semi-crack (nothing flat though) in the aye-aye-ayes but considering how jittery he must have been, an incredible delivery live and with a new band. That’s true about no echo needed for David, JR4D!
LOVED how mature and “in the zone” he looked despite the nerves. My husband noticed the sound guys cranking up the band in the middle and David right at the end. LOVED the ending. BRAVO, David!!!!!!!!

about the sound- most of the musical acts on Leno sound maybe… “tinny?”, maybe too unfinished, maybe “underprocessed” for some, I don’t know, it must be the studio, most acts just sound a little off. David and “his band” did not sound off-they sounded good.
I thought the band looked right with him and added a lot to his look, great vibe, youthful but not young, and they all looked hip, “it was a thrill to see him in his rightful place in front of a cool band.”

I thought it was a wonderful performance. Sweetie pie sang his little a$$ off. Or was it sang his face off, lol. Anyway, I love his lower register, delightfully seductive. He’s a baby faced killer, that is what he is. Disarm you, then steal your heart. I enjoyed it. I too curse the DVR gremlin who stole the last two minutes of his performance. Gee whiz, anyway, i watch the two that I had, and have watched it from every forum I’ve visited. He’s just grown so much as a performer.
Or course he was nervous, he hit the big time last night. His first national performance of Crush. Our little boy, all grown up. Incredible.

Ohmigosh, that was so much fun last night. He looked so cool in front of his own band, a bunch of hip-looking guys. Love the stripped-down, rock sound of Crush. Finally – no more piped in sound tracks to back him up. I’m loving it!

yep, I stayed up late to watch it too, even though I’d already seen it half a dozen times on youtube… I thought he did GREAT! Honestly, so many Archies are so funny… over protective and over critical at the same time… (not here, on some of the other boards). And, I have to say, youtube really doesn’t do his performance justice… on my HD reasonably big TV, he looked incredible and sounded fabulous… not completely without flaws, but that’s live tv… the beauty of David shone through… man, he looked hot! I love the band too… they lend a more “serious artist” vibe… definitely not a boyband kind of presentation…

Congratulations to David and the Band for a worthy performance. I watched the performance on my Mitsubishi big screen in vivid color with surround sound stereo (next best thing to being there – and as some of you know firsthand, “there aint nothin’ like the real thing baby!!!”). As usual, David added a few nuanced elements to make this performance unique.
Very nice indeed – visually, vocally and instrumentally. For obvious reasons, youtube videos fall a good measure short of my viewing and listening experience – and of course kindredspirit’s (#5) live experience.
Very proud of David and the Band’s inaugural performance. They seem like a good fit – David (and no doubt the Band) must be Sky High!!!

David said he loves that song, More than a Feeling….and then started singing it….THUD!!! Some of the band members were around and started talking about Led Zepplin, David says he loves Led Zepplin and that if you like Led Zepplin you’re cool…..ha, ha… I said we’re all cool then.

I love how new avatars are showing up with screen caps from Leno… he just looked so fab last night! I keep thinking about the first time I saw him, just nine months ago, when he sang Shop Around… I’ll never forget that moment… I was just passing by the TV …my family was watching AI, but I was busy and generally a very casual AI watcher… anyway, I was carrying a basket of laundry into the next room, and he just grabbed me. He looked so young and so happy… and his voice… so much more mature than his appearance. And then, he sealed the deal with his hilarious exchange with Ryan… amazing what he’s done since then!
djb, you crack me up…I think the growl just comes naturally especially when he’s really getting into the song. that would be really cute if he gave us a warning….
Listening without looking, as rascal suggested, I hear what is arguably one **slightly** flat note, like maybe a 1/32 off, in the beginning, on the 2nd syllable, the 2nd time he says “ruh-ush”. On the “ush” part. Maybe. Would not have thought to mention, but that was the discussion here, so there’s my 2 cents. Otherwise, I agree, voice change and nervousness account for what is heard in the lower register. David was TERRIFIC, circumstances or not, and–geesh, * * * 17 yo and on Jay Leno! ! ! * * * * Stunning, really. OK, going away now to invent a better word for “GAH”!!!!

“What a Rush” sums it up for me too. Our precious lil’ nugget just blew us away last night. David delivered like a pro. I love everything and everytime he sings, but nothing will ever beat when he sings live! David always delivers – it is who he is and another reason to embrace him. What a treasure we have found in this incredible young man. Thank you to all of you who share your experiences of David in person and those of you who share the links to pictures, articles and sites about David, as I would never – ever find them on my own. And thanks to you Rascal for this wonderful place you have created “Archieland” for us to come and live our love for David freely.

can he be more polished? performance-wise and vocally? of course! but he came off very professional and i really like the rocking sound of the song.
besides, his apparent nervousness makes him seem endearing, especially when he still sounds very good in spite of it.

Last night, David and his band members looked on the young side to me. As I think about it, Leno’s band was playing during the commercial breaks and they are more seasoned-looking. So, I think the comparison was fairly dramatic between the 2 musical groups.
David and his band sounded great. And they all seem to ‘match’ in a way. Didn’t Springsteen’s band members stay with him for a long time? Wouldn’t that be great for them to develop their sound together.
As for the rocked-out rendition, it will probably fit in perfectly with the other acts on the bill at the upcoming Jingle Balls. This launch is really exciting.
Here’s a question I have: Wasn’t David auditioning Utah musicians a while back? I thought the idea was to have a band based in Utah so David could spend more time at home. Is this new band only for the Jingle shows, or for the rumored solo show also? Any insight here, anyone?

Especially in David’s case cos that boy can sure make you throw out logic to the wind as soon as you lay eyes on him! And he looked miiiiiighty fine that night.
That’s why I still maintain that he was off for the ff parts of the 1st chorus: “go, trying, know, goin’ away (1st one)” then picked up from the yeah-yeah-yeah part.
But he was fantastic. 17yo at Leno and with a crazily difficult song to perform live, wow! (me doing woooh, we’re not worthy…)(1s
As an aside, I love his drummer! The minute he pounded on that 5-beat drum-cymbal combo – do-do-do-do-do — that set up the groove – woo!! I still snicker at Julia’s reaction to David… haha

I was fortunate enough to be there too, and echo kindredspirit’s account, with one thing to add: When I played it back on TV, the band seemed to overpower David in parts; but live was just about perfect. He sounded clear and strong, his voice filled the entire room (as usual), and blended with the band beautifully. It’s almost as if they turned him down for the broadcast.
I found this when googling about Leno’s broadcast quality regarding audio:
“Rather than go all-out with 5.1 surround sound, The Tonight Show is broadcast in standard Dolby 2.0. Realistically, there would be little to no benefit of employing more complex sound for a program like this. The vast majority of the show is comprised of Leno talking with his guests. The short band segments before and after the commercials and the musical guests, who usually have five minutes or less to perform, do not warrant or require better audio.”
I couldn’t find anything more current than this 2004 excerpt, so I would think they’ve upgraded since then. I’d always heard about Leno’s sound quality not being the greatest, and was admittedly a bit nervous for him and what people would think of the broadcast. But he did GREAT, to which you can all attest. So proud of him. He rocked it!

You know what? Listening to Radio Disney and all these pop songs..I’m just amazed at the difference in these songs and the songs on David’s Album!! There is just no comparison..David’s songs are on a very different level..very, very high different level.
David is sooo relaxed and talking so easily! Woo-hoo! He did a RRRRRR-RRRRRR, imitating a phone ring!! WOW! He sounded GREAT even doing that! haha!

Listening to David just now, I can’t get over how he is so surprised that CRUSH is #1 on radio Disney, or on top of any chart. He says it’s CRA-ZEH! He’s so humble and there’s absolutely no pretense whatsoever! Is it any wonder we love him? But I still don’t like it when he says THE VOICE is weird!! I’ll have to ask Erin to speak to him about that!
anyone know why when I go to youtube to play some of the new songs from dolcedor I get the message “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Sony/BMG” on some and not others- says this for YC and Barriers but not YEDL or Running?

betsy! I just love hearing you say that about “My Hands”! I always come back to that song. Over and Over and Over. Those opening vocal “oooooo-uh’s” are to DIE FOR. Guh! Imagine hearing it on pop radio … and those oooo-uh’s… rising up out of the mostly festering swampland that is pop radio… Can you not envision it becoming people’s pop music crack? And I adore the quirky lyrics. I’ve been afraid there were only, meh, maybe three other people in the archu_universe who love it like I do. I hope it grows (like kudzu in the south…lol) on others like it’s creeping up on you!
Any other (closet?) MH’ers out there who care to step up and brang on some MH love? (I think it would be a strong radio hit.)

beebee..YES I really love MH and I really would like that one or Desperate, Barriers (the snippet I liked least, go figure), or ALTNOY to be the next single. I guess it’s pretty much the majority that wants TMH. I love all the songs actually and everytime I listen to them all, I change my preference for the next single..Like right this moment, I’m listening to Your Eyes Don’t Lie..so now I think THAT one should be the next single..SEE, I dunno!! rascal, (hi!) I kinda think almost everything on the album except David’s voice pretty much comes out of a synthesizer– drums fer sher. (Am I crazy?) A real live band can only bring the “organics” back. (thank gawd)
Other song comments: both “Running” and “Don’t Let Go” have this kind of…. um… like jazzy (?) undertone that I find just…gah.. sooooo cooool. When I play these two together, I really get lost in that vibe. I’m guessing those two songs would hold stronger appeal for “adult contemporary” market– and not so much for under, say, age 25 (?) I’m still processing these songs, too. (The more I process, the more I LOVE)
Any golden, platinum archies here… please be still your hearts ok? Remember, you HAVE to reach 11/11 at the very least???

beebee, I agree with you. Running and Don’t Let Go are definitely a cut above, but I think the latter is one of the ones that I don’t love the percussion on. Don’t make me give away all of my opinions before I get a chance to put them all together!

Beebee #82 – Infrequent poster but constant lurker. Just waiting for something to respond to. I’ve been listening to all of his songs on FOD and just love MH. When the snippet came out, it was on the bottom of favs but after hearing the entire song – WOW! It’s everything I love about his music. I’m also loving To Be With You. The lyrics remind me of “I could not ask for more”. Got two grandkids that I want to make a tribute using that song – TBWY. It’s all so exciting.
