Archie II

The strength and speed with which David is establishing his own brand–his Archieness, if you will–is nothing short of head-spinning, especially considering where he was in this evolution just a few months ago. The teenage years are emblematic for their breakneck transformations, but if you had told me in August that David would be commanding crowds of 15,000 with ease, strutting around stage like mini-Mick, tossing in new performances at every other show, and coming up with his own signature look, I would have said you were suffering from ODD fever hallucinations.
One of the advantages of of über-fandom is that we can observe with considerably more acuity than the New York Times how much more dimension has been added to the Aw Shucks brand attribute (someone ought to make a tee-shirt for him that says that–how cooly self-referential would that be?). I do agree to a great extent with some of the comments here recently about how the Archie brand is redefining everything from rebellion to masculinity (and, one of these days I’ll get around to writing about that), but I also want to caution that we run the risk of veering into pedestal territory there, too.
David is unusually wise is certain ways and unusually young is others. He’ll be the first to tell you that he doesn’t feel like what he considers being an adult is supposed to be. Perhaps he will redefine adulthood, too. But the undeniable fact is that there are numerous transformations yet ahead, and not all of them are likely to be seraphic…or, at least, not what each and every one of his fans might consider so. Even if David maintains his status as a Bodhisattva, being in the world but not of it, he will be subject to the passions and limitations of being human.
It is hard not to draw conclusions when the sum and substance of an individual’s artistic output seems so rich and fully-realized, but we do need to maintain a certain perspective, and give the guy some rope. In the grand scheme of things, David only just got married to his audience moments ago; it is still the honeymoon. And like all young marriages, the continued growth of the participants will influence the direction of the relationship. As it is, we are already seeing some pretty exciting stuff from our betrothed. Archie is becoming a very generous lover indeed.

rascal, perhaps that tee shirt should say, “Aw, thanks!”
“David only just got married to his audience moments ago, it is still the honeymoon.”
Considering that we, his audience, just got introduced to David just this year, a marriage feels very rushed. We haven’t gotten David all to ourself yet (Solo Tour, anyone?).
Can’t we see this as an engagement for now?
*Says the single gal who obviously has commitment issues -- ha ha!*
Great post rascal.
I think what I love most is that David is human and because of his humaness his transformations have been mind-boggling and as TOfan said so very well a few threads back both “awwww” and “awe” inspiring. I have no way of asking but I am speculating that these changes we’ve seen on the Jingle Tour are his own decisions.
He does have many decisions ahead and that is part of the fascination of being a David fan for me--to see what he decides and how he carries it out and what he learns from making those decisions.
He is an “old soul” in so many ways for sure and enjoys his boyhood unashamedly--that is one of the many enigmas that continues to keep my ODD racing at hyper speed.
He seems so savvy about the vastly differing segments of his fan base; or maybe he is just being himself. Any way the future is unwritten and it will be a great ,albeit vicarious, learning experience for me to see the trajectory he takes in the coming years.
Thank you Rascal. You have once again very adroitly given life with your observations to thoughts I was having about our view of David. I find myself so enchanted with David that I forget he is human. Keeping that in mind does not in any way diminish the incredible accomplishments he has attainted to this date.
And back in awe I sit and think, this is after all just the beginning of this ride. And I’m sure there will be some bumps along the way. Do we trust the Archulator? Well, for me so far he has proven to be quite capable of leading us on to bigger and greater things. Apart from the amazing experience of hearing the VOICE reach new levels of perfection, some of thos e things we might experience COULD BE a better way of looking at ourselves and the world.
Hope that what I wrote makes sense. Haven’t had any coffee yet this morning. Good Morning! NDers of the world.
Late to the party re the Lowell concert (boy that trip was memorable weatherwise) but worth all the white knuckle driving because I was able to say a few words to David at the CD signing. I wished him the best at the Garden and told him he would LOVE it. I got the Archugaze and megawatt smile that will last me forever. BTW the scarf thing was evident on most of the performers that nite, including sidemen, except Jesse who was in a suit. It seems to be part of the current performance costume and David fits right in. He was more than magnificent… flawless comes to mind. Best of all was the total love and appreciation he shows to his audience. It radiates outward and is returned thousands-fold. This is my 4th time seeing David and the quantum leaps he makes as an artist each time have me so jazzed for the future that I can hardly wait. The 1000 Miles vid from the Garden is my favorite moment to date… it says it all. Sometimes my heart can barely stand it.
I like the way he weaves the “Sunday white shirt” into his signature look. Respectful but über cool.
To be truly “David” maybe that shirt should say
“Oh my heck..”
I often worry about the pedestal territory as well. I worry about us having expectations for him that he just can’t meet. I am not just talking about the performance expectations, but expectations for acceptable behavior and such.
I know that David is human, and I certainly steer away from those Angelic David discussions. I know that he will do something that may raise an eye at some point but I hope that those policing his behavior will cut him some slack and let him develop. I know I will.
Speaking of this stage in our fandom as a honeymoon. I’m enjoying this one far more than the original, lol. And if this is a marriage, I am like Will and Jada, divorce is not an option!
My shirt would say ‘hijole’!
I am going to try to get thought of David being a ‘generous lover’ out of my head. Don’t want nobody rapping my hands with a ruler.
One more thing I’ll say before heading out for the day (I hope you guys realize I’m joking about the marriage/engagement thing -- I am David’s ardent and lifelong fan; I have no problems taking my marital vows as an Archie right now! We should draw some up BTW).
I see hints of Elvis, Mick Jagger, and Michael Jackson, all men who challenged standard masculinity (I don’t know where the Pat Boone and Osmonds comparisons are coming from -- obviously people are paying attention to geography and not the soul-singer). His fashion is so bold (for such a bashful guy), and his manner and singing are so wide open and sincere. This, this is the sign of a star. No artifice, no pretense. Other performers have merely been imitators. David is the real thing, and it will always remain a complete enigma to me how someone from Generation Y (many of whom I teach on a regular basis) can rise above their high-tech digital culture, where everything creative is a remix, and find his own voice and style. David is a THROWBACK in every sense of the word. He’s like the one organic ingredient you find in a sea of genetically altered products. And when you come upon him, it’s like: “Woah, YOU still exist!” And you can’t help but feel jubilant that someone who is so natural can survive and thrive in the midst of superficialities.
I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the phenomenon that is David Archuleta.
River992 -- how about hijole! haha!
Good morning everyone!
Not to rain on anyone’s tee-shirt parade, but the self-referential cool factor is to wear what others are inclined to say about you, not what you are prone to say.
brooklyndawn #8 -- Well said and may it so unfold. *cheering and applauding loudly*
HG #10 -- You are so freakin’ aWEsoME!
jr$da -- Good morning to you!
I do not have a problem with expectations of David as a person, a teen behaving like one. As I’ve mentioned before, I work in a wonderful high school near NYC and I see “Davids” everywhere. All manner of personalities and behaviors and he’s so typical of these guys I see. In particular the “hand talking” gestures everyone seems to notice. Hey it’s just typical when they’re searching for words. We notice a disctinct difficulty that many of the kids are having in fluently expressing themselves because they do so much communicating via text and vocal shorthand. What amazes me is that he handles both of his lives, artist and kid, with such aplomb… and he’s totally true to both. What a gift, for him and for us.
River992 -- “handles both of his lives, artist and kid, with such aplomb” -- yes!
HG10 -- yes and yes!
rascal -- thanks for the grounding.
well Rascal, then I guess his shirt has to say ” OMG”
“Mini-Mick”? “Scarf-strewn rocker boy”? Rascal, I’m loving your way with words!
“Perhaps he will redefine adulthood, too.” I REALLY like this one. I myself and someone who clings to and never wants to let go my inner child, my excitability, my silliness. When I encounter old friends around my age (I’m 31), so many of them seem so dang BORED, routine, not feeling they have much to be excited about or look forward to. Some people “put childish things away” and think this substitutes for genuine maturity and adulthood. Hm.
Okay, over at IDF I posted my dream Christmas album for Archie. What do people think?
Okay, here’s my Dream Track List. It’s a combination of my favorite Christmas songs and songs that I think would show off his voice and allow him to “soul” it up:
1. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town (Jackson 5 version!)
2. What Child Is This?
3. O Holy Night
4. O Come All Ye Faithful
5. Do You Hear What I Hear?
6. I’ll Be Home for Christmas
7. O Christmas Tree
8. The Christmas Song
9. White Christmas
10. Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
11. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
12. Ave Maria (Schubert)
13. Joyful, Joyful
14. Silent Night (acappella)
must agree raz.
and oh yeah, is it just me or david james actually has the european fashion mode. he is reminds me of the new fab four duran duran fashion sense. ah yes, the kid has good taste!
Brooklyndawn -- I see that we have the same sign in mind
It may interest you to know that the scarves David is wearing are gifts from his fans. So a number of angels are in heaven every time they see him nowadays!
HG once again, so well put. A THROWBACK — that’s exactly how I find him and yet in the many discourses we have shared here in ND, he is regarded as a new direction of the industry’s future, if it to rise from its manufactured doldrums.
To me, David escapes full or exact definition because as an artist, his truth eludes the conceptual structure of a thinker. He may be “unusually young in certain ways” owing perhaps to his upbringing and the community he has grown into but by the same token, it has afforded Davids time to develop into a genuine witness to experiences, as all true artists are, and we -- his audience -- are reaping the benefits.

Hey guys! Just another quick check in on my favorite blog.
Anybody else find it curious why so many reviewers keep commenting on his “aw shucks” innocent demeaner? You’d think, with all the teen stars out there, even those swearing their allegiance to “purity” and all, that they’d be used to teenagers like David. Could it be that, despite the Jonus Brothers’ purity-ring-wearing selves and self-proclaimed virgins (from teen Britney to Miley Cyrus), they recognize a genuine innocent when they see one? This isn’t just your typical mockery either. It’s like they’re really amazed that someone like David exists. I sense some genuine “shock and awe” going on.
OK, gotta run again!
Rascal, as usual, I’m going to need time to give your post the careful read it deserves. (And the other great comments here, too.)
Was just able to listen to HYAMLC now and had to pop in to say I’m toast… a puddle … a toasted puddle. Whatever. You guys get it. Especially noting how David changed “our troubles will be miles away” to “YOUR” troubles … it’s always about us, his audience.
Oh my … what planet does he come from?… and how can I move there?
Rascal,
If I may
I believe that here at ND we accept that David is human; we relish this in fact and it seems that this also instigates that special connection we feel with him.
Based on this, it is safe to say that in discussing certain subjects we would not deify him, rather to quote and agree with Bliss “It’s not about his personal life. It’s about the effect he is having on everyone else’s personal life (#378 post Who are You and What have you done with DA?)“. In remembering this premise, with the occasional necessary reminder, we would be able to delve into the “Look at what he made me do(think)!” quandary. This phrase has been a recurrent theme at this site. For me it has never been about what David “does FOR me” rather what he has ”GIVEN ME – the direction and motivation to accomplish for myself”.
David soars amongst the heavens in his abilities, yet keeps us grounded by being his – at times – adorkable human self accompanied by all those “limitations of being human”.
I am curious as to why you used this title?
T-shirt idea: Well, how about-
” !Hijole ! DJA is “caliente”!. You can’t argue the point that he is “hot” vocally and otherwise.
ronaldsf #17 Can I add a bonus track? Mary Did You Know
Lots of beautiful words from everyone, including about how David can help bring some life and “soul” back to a manufactured music industry.
Just wanna bring up a negative example, though, if only to prove what people have been saying about the music industry today. And when I saw this video I was so frustrated by it I wanted to see what other people thought.
I warn you, do not watch this video of Kanye West singing “Love Lockdown” (complete with auto-tuner) if cringing is not to your taste:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1U3Vepnzjtw
To be fair to Kanye, he is primarily a rapper and not a singer. And I’m sure there are songs of his that I like (and David himself would be the first to defend him). But my point is more general -- this just reminded me how low (or narrow) the general public’s expectations have become in regard to music. I love to dance and groove and I’ll be the first to boogie on the dance floor, but too many times, slick (albeit sometimes well-done) song production, or being experimental, or boldly redefining style, or visual presentation substitute for -- what can I call it -- soul?
This is MUSIC, yes? What about bringing out the whole range of emotions -- sorrow, anger, the giddiness of new love, joy -- that only music can bring? I’m happy that David finds inspiration and incorporates what he can from people around him. But his fans recognize something unique and “new” (i.e. “throwback”) in HIM. Hopefully this will have a ripple effect in the industry because oh is it needed.
TOfan #22 You are a mite incoherent at the moment. Do you need the paddles? The will surely toast you if you are a puddle
awestruck #25, *palm to forehead*
Doh! How I could forget that one?? Will revise over at IDF.
HG #21, what you said:
they recognize a genuine innocent when they see one?
I think you’re onto something! I was put off a bit because reviewers in general tend to put on an air of superiority, but I think you’re right in that they ARE genuinely “shocked and awed” by seeing someone as genuine as David. Still, their words need to catch up with what they’re actually feeling because they’re still using a little snark to distance themselves from him
ronaldsf #26 Cringe is right and yes I agree the industry needs to raise the bar.
ronaldsf @28 That distance they are trying to maintain will continue to be maintained until THE NEW COOL (who is DA) is more universally embraced.
awestruck #30, I agree. In time they’ll HAVE to embrace it. Who’da thunk that music “critics” are actually the lemmings of the music world? I’m shocked!
Oh and about my post #26, I didn’t include the link of David’s own 10 sec take of “Love Lockdown”. I just assumed you all had seen it already
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2wEbjUJOwK0
Ronaldsf -- #17 If I might, could I suggest two more bonus tracks for David’s Christmas CD -- “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” (big band-era version, a la Andy Williams) and “There’s a New Kid in Town” (with barely any accompaniment -- a la Billy Gilman).
TOfan -- #22 I just got back from running some morning errands (taking a vacation day from work today) and just watched HYAMLC again. And again, I’m a complete mess. Oh my heck!
Hg # 10 — Yes! I love you for unscrambling my thoughts and giving me more food for thought on a regular basis. Don’t ever settle for less (from yesterday’s thread) or I will have to come give you a piece of my mind!
River — “What amazes me is that he handles both of his lives, artist and kid, with such aplomb… and he’s totally true to both.” Yes.
I worry about him. I have a 21 year old daughter who nearly caved under the pressure she felt to live up to peoples expectations (which were so much lower than her own.) I don’t think he is unaware of the weight placed on his shoulders. It started to show after Imagine and continued through the rest of idol and the tour. I love seeing the lightness and excitement now. Those absolutely heart melting smiles as he sings ATM make me happy. He seems to be enjoying the moment as the love gets reflected back and forth.
SF’s nightly prayer says it all for me. My love is unconditional and forever, though for me it is more the very proud and fiercely protective mother kind. I am so grateful for the feast he delivers on a regular basis.
Hi my NDers….I wish someone was monitoring the comments on David’s myspace. There is one on there by the name of Surrender and it’s a bit weird…ummm…disturbing to me! I am not sure how to take it. Go check it out and let me know your thoughts on it please.
Guess I should “shake it off, let it go”….lol!
Awestruck, #27, just took another break for ATM and I don’t think even paddles will revive me. Every time he sings, “If I could FAAAAAALLLL” — I do. And his smile from, like, 3:03-3:06ish then again at 3:12, soooo gloriously happy, wow…………
(Ronaldsf, #26, can’t watch Kanye now but I did see him do Love Lockdown on SNL Sat. night and was gob-smacked (as they say in the U.K.) — nowhere near the soul or musicality of David’s little riff. Am I missing something?)
kurt1960, YES, isn’t HYAMLC SIMPLY GORGEOUS! I keep playing it, over and over. He sounds so confident. Pure, happy, awesome vocals! I can’t say the words as well as some, but, I know I FEEL what our eloquent writers say! Thanks JR4DA for the videos last night. Don’t you ever sleep?
Inspired by David #34 -- Just read the comments by “Surrender” on David’s Myspace. The poster is obviously deranged and a flaming hypocrite. Please heed the suggesting in post #35.
Archangel48 -- #37 As I stated previously, HYAMLC is one of my all time favorite Christmas songs. Not unlike Lennon’s “Imagine”, I’m quite protective of this song as I have always loved Judy Garland’s original rendition. But as always, David takes an established standard and magically infuses his beautiful soul upon it. I had to laugh at myself earlier, after the 5th or 6th viewing, I momentarily forgot Judy’s last name.
#34 Inspired -- I stopped reading his myspace comments long ago. Some are disturbing and some just garbage.
But I did go back and read “surrender’s* comment.
It is so off base and looney that I think if David saw it he would just shake it off. The thought that they judge him as amoral because of his “strutting” around is not worth my attention.
It’s their loss.
(they probably hate everyone)
So Christian of them.
Okay -- I guess it does get my attention and angers me.
Mini-Mick, scarf-strewn rocker boy.
How about ‘The Little Prince’ as in Saint Exupéry’s? In this photo he looks just like the one in the illustrations in my beloved teenage book. Not to mention the spirit within, which is a much more complicated comparison. Or maybe it’s just my ODD getting the best of me.
Rascal, this is just brilliant writing once again….I just love, “being in the world but not of it”….
I found that link for Kanye unavailable, however I did see him do it on SNL and it sure took him a while to hit his stride with it. I like Kanye but for now I’d say that of the two, David is far more confident. (mind-blowing).
A while ago it was mentioned that the Garden was his biggest audience but I keep replaying his remarkable God Bless America in Florida at the baseball game… in front of many more thousands plus the national TV. It was pitch perfect, heartfelt and totally relaxed. I always hark back to what he said in an interview during AI… “I’ve done this a lot.” He seems to revel in pressure and takes joy in assuming risk. His blog says ” I had a blast” at MSG and so he did.
Someone called David immoral because of his strutting on stage? Give me an f&*($*&$ break.
Also, Brooklyn’s comment:
I know that David is human, and I certainly steer away from those Angelic David discussions. I know that he will do something that may raise an eye at some point but I hope that those policing his behavior will cut him some slack and let him develop. I know I will.
…I agree, totally, Brooklyn! I see a parallel between the ridiculous MySpace comment and the sentiment that you are concerned about.
I am really hoping for okay driving weather tomorrow! Can’t wait to see David perform live again and to hear his voice fill the arena!!
my sister in Minneapolis says it’s -19 degrees today. he’s going to need all those scarves.
David as the authentic innocent- so true, I am sure people are truly at a loss as to how to understand him, and cannot help but try to put him in their own little box… I have given up on trying to define him and have accepted this life long ODD and for me David can take me anywhere he wants and I will accept his choices unconditionally.
Kizzi your comment “He seems so savvy about the vastly differing segments of his fan base; or maybe he is just being himself.” struck a cord with me. After my experience at the Albany Jingle jam I was awestruck at how he reaches out to all his fans… not just the young girls, His eyes locked with mine (I’m an “old girl”) and I knew that all he cares about is his music reaching out to all people and giving them a lift, a joy, a peace, and for that I adore him!
HG -- love this “David is a THROWBACK in every sense of the word. He’s like the one organic ingredient you find in a sea of genetically altered products. And when you come upon him, it’s like: “Woah, YOU still exist!” And you can’t help but feel jubilant that someone who is so natural can survive and thrive in the midst of superficialities.”… Elvis, Mick and Michael all rolled into one? too much.
Valbraz” The little prince”.. love it
TOfan… I am ready to move to David’s planet any time… let me know when you are packed.
#34 i think we need to “shake it off”… but it makes me very angry to read such nonsense…
Kurt1960 and Betsy -- I just found it strange that this person thinks David is immoral or trying to be sexy when he is strutting around. He is one the most religious people I have ever seen in the public eye. Along with admiring him for his musical abilities…his personality is another reason why I like and respect him so much. He even dresses far more respectable than most artists out there (Brittany). This goober is way off base LOL!!!
“Shaking it off and letting it gooo”…..:).
brooklyndawn #9~ ..ruler….what ruler?..it has been thrown overboard…….and…
TOfan #22~ we are all Toast..ArchuToast…..and its only just begun!…….
OK…I know this is out of context, but I just saw this article and have to say…how COOL is that headline, I mean just “David”….like he is so cool now, that when anybody mentions DAVID it will mean they are referring to the one and only David Archuleta. Awwww….he’s getting to be such a SUPERSTAR!
http://popsugar.com/2604285
Cool Joner!
We always associated *David* as our one and only David. Now the world has noticed.
“The vocal genius David.”
Hg -- loved your post, as always. Maybe in the future (when he’s older and has lived a bit) you could write a biography on David.
I would buy it!
Have you seen the backstage interview at the Candem jingle Ball yesterday? You’ll find it at Snarky’s. The young lady interviewing him is a fangirl.
At one point she says her sister has the cd and can’t get past track 4 because she keeps listening to it. Ha ha! There’s a lot of love for My Hands. She also calls him cute and a hearthrob. She says ‘I can’t take it!’ And he laughs and sings this line! Aw, David!
ALTNOY vid is up at snarkies!
The ALTNOY video is fantastic! I like it better than Crush. His facial expressions really reflect the emotions of the song. Another hit for David!
Here’s the ALTNOY link:
http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/--205781579
Almost didn’t recognize him, he looks so heartbroken and les misérables … LOVE it!!!!!
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the new video! I am totally spazzzing!!! The lead girl looks so believable with him! A heavenly duo!
Joner, I love it, too. Can’t stop watching — if you ask me, the video is REALLY going to help sell the song. I’m excited for David!
Maybe THAT’S what happened to his I-Phone! It made a “get-away” before he could delete all those beautiful pics of his “ex” girlfriend at the end of the video!!!
I’ve been lurking here today and LOVING it!
About THE VIDEO..is it THE VIDEO, or just screen caps? I just saw screen caps, no video..maybe it’s a good thing cuz I can’t access videos at work..yet, but I’m working on it!
Can we add ACTOR to David’s resume’ now, please!
Hijole! David! Have Mercy on us!
It’s the video and it is FANTASTIC! It made me cry… he totally communicates the sadness and angst he’s feeling. It’s better than Crush.
SF….It is THE video alright and I’ve gotta say, there were a couple of moments where he resembled Elvis in a freakishly crazy way! Priscilla…BACK AWAY!!!
SF, check direct link at #54 above, stat!
he scowwwwwls! ahhhhhh!
…and I get to see our little actor tomorrow in Chicago! ♫I’M ALL SHOOK UP♪
My goodness, that HYAMLC at Camden, NJ was so moving, so beautifully done! He’s a REAL VOICE. There’s a quality to his natural vibrato that I associate with born singers. David brings his own beautiful spirit to that instrument, and we are somehow changed by the experience. I hope that he will record that song someday with a full orchestra or ensemble of some kind. That song was made for singers like David.
Gotta get home…OHG! I’m spazzin’ & I haven’t even seen it YET!!
Later!
YEOWSER! I am LOVIN’ this video! He can definately add actor to the David Dreams to accomplish! I’m going to watch it again. Gosh, I remember thinking we were going to be bored during the Fall! Hah…was I wrong! I wonder what Rascal thinks?
Joner #62, I was going to Chicago…then emergency surgery for my beloved pet happened!$$$…I will be there in spirit! I shall look forward to his solo tour.
Wow, the video! What do you all think?!
I really like it, perhaps even better than the “Crush” video. I thought it was very artistic. Can’t wait to hear what Rascal thinks, too!
Those takes against the greyish wall where he’s wearing the light-grey sweater, OMG! Grey is my new favourite colour. And the rain is so sexy. And he looks so hurt! Aw, David! This video will be the end of all tweens and teens that watch it. I can think of a few very grown-up girls who won’t be able to play it cool, either.
OMGosh!! I love this video!! Wouldn’t it be great if they played it on the big screen during the rest of David’s Jingle ALTNOY performances??
archangel48 -- I’m sorry to hear you can’t go to the Chicago concert but I also know how much love you can have for pets, my two goldens are like family. I hope everything turned out OK!
Thanks Joner, so far so good. Surgery on a growth they removed. Isn’t it strange how scared I was for her? She’s 6 years old and beautiful. We do love our pets, yes, just like Family!
Good afternoon, All.
So I sneak a quick look on the web while I am supposed to be working just to read about our boy and how all of you are doing. (oh, Archangel 48…all the best with your babies, I REALLY understand about how much they mean to you and you mean to them…, God Bless you all).
And then you guys post the link to the new Video! I’m done for. Have to pull it up…and of course everyone is screaming about who’s tying up the web (of course I don’t admit to it) and now I’m space case and am watching the clock more than ever so that I can get home and watch it to my heart’s content. It is fantastic…and the dear boy never leaves character, not for a millisecond. And the ending….don’t you dare hit delete, I’ll never speak to you again young Mr. David.
Who would have thunk that the shy kid from my hometown would turn into this heartthrob. His eyes, oh my gosh, he sings through his eyes…shades of Bull Durham (watch the movie, you’ll get it).
Now the young kids at work will really think I’m crazy when I force them to download this to a CD that I can play on my big screen TV.
Luvs and thanks for the posting!
Just got done watching the video for ALTNOY. Gosh dang it, he did it again. I ‘matured’ during the mTV era -- it launched just a few weeks before my 21st birthday. This may very well be the best, most heartfelt, heart-wrenching, soulful, moving video I’ve ever seen. it isn’t just THE VOICE, but the eyes, the facial expressions -- the entire Archulator -- that makes one truly feel the emotions sung about here. The only video I can think of that even comes close would be Billy Gilman’s “Oklahoma”.
*thud*
Okay, since film studies was my co-major I thought I could maybe possibly perhaps watch this vid objectively … not a chance.
Despite all the music-video clichés (shots through the rain, cavorting on the beach), I can’t help but love it.
Although (and please don’t hate me for this, guys), I actually laughed out loud at that half-pout/scowl of David’s as he gives a sideways glance at the camera at 1:01. He’s totally sincere, it’s just … I don’t know why that made me laugh. Better watch again …..
TOfan
I love pouting David!
It’s just too cute to bear that’s why you had to laugh. I had the same reaction.
Ok. For lack of more conclusive evidence as to why the silly young lady left him it has been speculated that his misfortune must’ve been brought about by the indoor umbrella opening thing. You just don’t do that.
New thread!
