Shop Around David is back. The pressures and gravitas, the need to accomplish something: gone. Pure fun, the sheer joy in performing, that’s what is front-and-center at this performance in Sacramento — even the hand flourishes have returned, and that works for me.
The success of Crush and the decent showing so far of his album have certainly contributed to a well-deserved comfort level with his abilities and potential, but it is undoubtedly the simple fact of getting back where he belongs in front of an audience that has given David the energy that so vividly jumps through the by-now familiar fan-cam.
There is also a terrific moment during “You Can” at the end of the bridge, where he powers out the long note and veritably stuns the crowd into enormous cheers and literally stops the show (these kids are just not accustomed to hearing major vocal talent, especially live, and Jive would be well-advised to acknowledge that age is immaterial in the appreciation of it). He cracks a huge smile, and although he should resist that, it is nevertheless a delightful indulgence in shared pride for his über-fans.
Despite what I still consider to be second-rate material, David is having (apropos to the setting) a ball, and that counts for a lot. I’ve rarely seen his rapport with the audience at a higher pitch, and he looks rockin’ in a t-shirt and vest. If this is what we can expect on his tour, it should be a blast.

Wow! David looks older and visibly more confident on the stage. I am so excited and happy for him. He is having a blast and he loves the audience feedback.
Woohoo… David has morphed into what?? Superstar David? Who is this guy strutting the stage, dancing about? It really is amazing the way David has the ability to make such huge leaps. I would hardly have believed this of him if I hadn’t seen it myself. Wasn’t he shy and really inhibited about 10 minutes ago?
Loved all the songs and the cheeky bravado. Again, David who??! I particularly loved ‘You Can’ and the glimmer of smiles near the end when he’s waiting for the screams to abate so he can finish the song. Hey, also, someone at the Sac Jingle Jam said that David did a really quick hand to heart sign as he came on stage. Quick enough that if you blink, you’ll miss it. Ahhh… He’s thinking of us, guys!
What hit me in February? An Archuleta truck, I guess. My life went off the rails right about then, and nothing has been the same since. This kid just plain owns me lock, stock and barrel…..and I love it. What can I say?

Oh, the emotions. I watch “Works For Me” and I can’t stop laughing — the fun! I watch “You Can” and I can’t stop swooning — the tenderness. And I watch “Crush” — hear the audience reaction, and I cry from sheer happiness for a kid I’ve come to care for so deeply. He was brilliant last night. He puts it all out there. I’d ask where he found the energy, but I suspect we all know where he finds it: he loves his audience. His audience loves him.
Again, I count myself as unbelievably lucky to be among those who ‘get’ David Archuleta. My life is so much richer.

I must say, though, when I was there I didn’t quite “catch” it -- I sat in row 17 and I think you really need to see him close up to get a sense of the joy he’s feeling.

Seriously guys. These perfornances so exceeded my expectations. Vocally he was incredible. Nobody can touch that voice. Stellar.
His connection with the audience was immediate and palpable. He grabbed them and never let go.
He looked beautiful, (swanky as the snarkies say) he behaved like a self assured veteran instead of a shy self-effacing 17 year old.
He worked it OUT!

#19 -- Yes, Ronald is our hero! At its peak last night, around 405 people were listening live to David via Ronald’s cell phone. It was a blast!
It was funny too because people were coming into the snarkies blogTV room thinking Amy must be a star or something because she had so many viewers! They were like: “Who is this girl and why so many viewers?” LOL
Wow David! This whole past year from the beginning of David trying out on Idol has been just amazing. To see him mature and start to really own the stage is so exciting. This has all been in God’s hands. God gave him the stage with Idol, for everyone to fall in love with him. He didn’t need to win, because it would have taken away from his true mission (to reach others through his voice). And now, he’s been truly taking all of his blessings and using them all in the right way. Watch out world…much more than a bigger boat!
josie…as not to worry over our precious beebers…After David’s set last night I asked the very soft spoken, man of few words, Mr. Beebee what he thought of David’s performance. His reply…
“I’m quitting my job, packing up and following David around the country.”
David exceeded all of my expectations last night. I have to admit I was a little nervous about this first concert. I was actually a little restless last night and concerned about how it was going for him so I’m thrilled to see how well he did on EVERY level!
I know, I know “Trust the Archuleta”. I guess it’s the “Mom” in me that makes me worry and I don’t even have any children (I raise golden retrievers) so all this concern for him is new, and strange and surprising to me. He’s kinda like having a new puppy
A really, really cute puppy that’s always wagging its tail! LOL
and somehow all of his successes feel so “personal” to me.

And maybe if we get ALL the fans from all the sites together we can find a way to get a special visit from you-know-who. Here’s hoping! Once a date is set we should start making arrangements.
Janey, no unfortunetly I’m not going to any JBs. His performance level on these were amazing! He changed it up a little on each song, which I just love about David. He’s able to make it fresh and new each time he sings the songs. He was having so much fun too. He’s really matured and he’s getting really comfortable in his own skin (beautiful skin I must add). This is all part of the development of a star. He already is one.

So here’s my take on David’s Mariah hand. Way back when -- when Mariah first sprung onto the scene with Vision of Love, I remember watching her emote through her hand and thought I need to find out why she does that -- I researched and sure enough I found (do not ask me where -- this is like a zillion years ago and I’m old as dirt as you all lovingly know) that people who live, breathe, think about music most of their day and night, tend to subconsciously flail (for lack of a better word) their hands around especially when performing runs….(Christina does it a lot too) as if the music is erupting from their fingertips. That was the description and I have watched some of my favorites do it forevah…so it’s no wonder that David does this -- wonder what his toes look like when he’s doing some hunkerdown runs?

Brilliant idea, Ronaldsf, and I’m in for the Archufanvention if at all possible. Like others, I can’t get to a JB/JJ but I’ve already mentioned ‘solo tour’ to the husband. I’d be willing to let that trip be my every present for the next two years (or until the next Archuleta tour — whichever comes first.)

I’m taking a quick break to catch up right now. I was so uplifted this morning and these past few days, but now I’m feeling really down and out.
There’s so much I have to preside over today, and I’m starting to feel overwhelmed. The freezing rain that we’re having doesn’t help matters. Sigh.
I’m kind of blaming myself here, because had I not had that sudden creative burst yesterday to create yet another fan video, I wouldn’t be so far behind and feeling this way. At the same time, I really don’t want to blame my ODD because 1)David is a good force in my life, and that can only be a positive thing and 2)when the creative bug strikes, you just go with the flow and let that spirit take over.
I’m now trying to find that burst of energetic inspiration to keep me going now…at least until the weekend.
I’m so out of sorts today, and I don’t know why. Sigh.
Anyway, back to work!

Anyway..as soon as we know the tour schedule for sure, we need to make definite plans! I don’t know how anyone else feels, but I think the best time to have the ARCHUFANVENTION is at the final solo concert if it’s held in the USA, only to show our love & appreciation to David…however I would most likely go to more than one, and the also final one for sure on his solo tour wherever it may be…but that’s just me. This is only a suggestion. It would also give all the fans in ARCHUWORLD time to plan…maybe even the over-seas fans could attend. And we could make it a YEARLY EVENT too! Exciting!!

OBSERVATION: David brings in his best performances whenever Lupe is around -- have you noticed that?
Silverfox! Well, we can’t plan anything until we know the dates. The dates will probably be released before tickets go on sale, so we can start planning then. We probably need to do it in concert with FOD, and because it’s under Richard they have the legitimacy to organize something like this (ahem). So not much we can do about it now but wait for the schedule and then bringing it up at FOD.

I think that moment for David ranks as one of the greatest moments in concert performances of all time!!!!!!!!!! and you know I go WAY back to the Judy Garland days. David must now realize, by being overcome with the applause from his audience, that David we DO love and adore you. That was a moment in time, right there. Rascal, I’m so glad you could catch David’s joy through the video because that was among my strongest impressions--he’s never ever been happier. I have sworn to do everything I can for David as long as he’s happy doing what he’s doing. What a reward that felt like last night. There is no word for the kind of joy he was showing…I’m working on it. * Digs out the thesaurus *
Watch video versions of this performance that show David in a full body shot. (riski’s vids are a good bet). His energy expresses itself through his moves more freely and more successfully than I think I’ve ever seen before.
In what is an unusual twist for a live Archie performance, it is almost more rewarding to see this one in wider shots instead of close-ups. I guess it’s pretty ironic that I only just got finished lamenting the presence of the lid, because even though I’m not quite ready to proclaim its being blown to smithereens quite yet, it certainly is popping up rather frequently here.
And I would even add that I very much consider certain decisions, certain… shall we say, presentational decisions, to be very much part of the exit strategy for that lid. How else to explain the loss of inhibition that has finally flaunted certain of David’s lights that have been mostly hidden under a bushel? Hey man, this is show business. You need all the ammunition you can bring. Bring it!

rascal #72 If I am reading you correctly? Do you really think David has planned and is conciously making “presentational decisions”? It sure looks to me like it is more spontaneous to me; simply enjoying himself to the nth degree letting loose because of it.

Rascal, thanks for the tip to look at riski’s videos! I love them! Seeing the full body shot really shows a new freedom in his performance.
Most important is that the energy of the full-body performance itself is what is lid-lifting. But this other decision (and I understand from other threads today that this was very likely a David decision and not a stylist decision) also contributes to the lifting of the lid. Look, there are certain things about David that to anyone with two eyes are pretty obvious. My personal opinion is that he has been rather self-conscious about this. I don’t really care about the visibility itself, I care about the releasing of inhibitions that went into the decision.

OH Hello HAPPY~ I am here with my ruler just in time,,,,
I’m still having trouble articlulating my response to David’s performance last night. In a way I think it’s obvious that words cannot do justice. Certainly not my words, anyway. I can’t wrap my observational and writinig skills around it. I do want to say, however, that if the “moves police” have any nitpicking to do regarding his Sacto Jingle performances, well… don’t quit your day jobs. Every single itty bitty archu_move and vibe associated with them were, imo, beyond electrifying. He knows precisely what he’s doing. And it’s informed from the inside out. It’s as much instinctual as planned. He’s establishing (er, make that established) new comfort zone territory in his own skin…on the stage. Have I ever mentioned that David Archuleta is the frickn’ REAL DEAL? No doubt about it, folks. GUH. My jaw is still on the floor. (It works for him. It works for me.) (thud)

Works For Me! (And My non-Eyewitness Account)
last night, as I shut down the house and headed to bed, I figured “let me stop in one last time” and what a treat…. there I was, a grown woman with plenty to do but needing to go to bed, sitting in front of a computer listening to the cell phone of another adult 3000 miles away. And I know my grown-up friends are doing the same,…. we are listening to a “soon-to-be-no-longer-a-kid” sing over a very garbled (but very acceptable) cellcast…..and you know what? he sounded joyous! As is always evident- his voice really transcends all the noise….. you could feel the energy….his energy, his emotion, his joy….. and that pause at the last verse of YC- you could feel his satisfaction…now as for his look….can’t say as we were expecting quite that mu….. never mind….

rascal..David is an “old soul”..and as I’ve said so many times, he is fulfilling his destiny. He was born to do exactly what he is doing. He is strong willed and he knows what he wants & will do what it takes. When I say THE PRAYER each night, I add my own personal wishes for him, and that is for David to always be happy. I must admit that I worry for his safety, I worry that his star will get so bright, that he will have to isolate himself. I worry that he will be so loved but still be very lonely..I pray that it won’t be too long before he allows himself to have a special someone to share this extraordinary life. I pray that he follows his heart when appropriate, and his head when needed without interferance from outside sources. I strongly believe David is in control more than we think. We will see more & more shades of David come to light..I think he is one of the most creative people we will ever have the priviledge to witness. His faith, I hope will be his anchor as long as it doesn’t weigh him down. I would hate it if David would ever have to make a choice between his religion & his career, and i don’t mean his faith..he will always have that. Faith is not a religion. Please don’t anyone throw anytthing at me..these are my thoughts and I’m just being honest.
Having said all that..I also think that David knows he has
certain attributes which he has at times, allowed us just a glimpse now & then.. he really doesn’t have to do much, he just is an extremely sensual guy when he wants to be..he’s kind of like a Male Marilyn Monroe..Sexy & Vulnerable..

silverfox -- #108 -- people have commented over the course of my blogging that I can have, on occasion, an insight into David that makes them feel incredibly connected; that even at times makes them weep. I have to say that when you post comments like this you do the same to me. Your comments are processed not in my mind but in my heart. You are very, very connected to him.
I am grateful that you made a distinction between his faith and his religion. There may not be anything I hope for more than his ability to make that same distinction. I confess that I worry about this. That’s why when I see him making overtures in directions that are plainly in opposition to doctrine I rejoice — yes, I do — because trusting the god in your heart more than the one on the page or in the pulpit is not a rejection of scripture but an embrace of a personal relationship between you and the source of all things.
David has many champions and many protectors. But some of them champion doctrinal agendas rather than David’s true heart. I pray that we can always stay with David, and not with what we are inclined to believe David should be.
SF #108, after so many smiles today, your post moved me to tears, big ones. I share the same worries but, as you do, I try to remember David’s tender heart is forged with steel. Thanks for your wonderful prayers and, well, just everything else.

SF! You really hit the nail on the head with the at once sexy and vulnerable aspect of David. He’s coming into his own power— and exquisitely, I might (unnecessarily) add. (Coals…Newcastle…lol) It’s so… mmm. Delicious. Trusting the Archuleta, it seems, never disappoints. At least not me. I feel some of the same worries you do sometimes, but then he snaps me back every time with what appears to be his ever-present common sense and even pragmatism. He’s really so much more self-posessed than he sometimes appears. He’ll surely have personal challenges as he grows up in this world he’s in. At least I HOPE he does…I mean it’s all part of being human. (We’re all bozos on this bus!) But I can’t help but believe he’ll never really be “lost.” Ever. just wanted to comment on that… I was thinking of that today after the pleasantries of last night.. your phrase “trust the Archulator.” First of all, faith of any kind is a gift. It is a belief in the wisdom of the universe, a realization that we are not the arbiters nor the controllers of the universe, somehow knowing all that is right from all that is wrong.
I don’t NEED David to be anything in particular. I already have Dylan and Beethoven, Pavorotti and Van Morrison, Waits and Piaf, and Stevie Ray and Ray Charles, and Springsteen, and Aretha and .. you get the point. My prayer is that David will reveal David to me and that I will continue to hear it, not that I will somehow communicate my expectations to him…..better to let the universe REVEAL itself…..
And I have to say, that with the lack of sleep last night, the twists and turns in the comments are making my head spin a bit.

It’s clear to me that David is a naturally sensual person. It’s clear in his music and the place where he apparently goes with his music, and last night it became more clear through his physical performance along with the music. Hey ronaldsf! What a great, detailed account of what sounded like a great concert. Well, David’s part sounded great; the other parts sounded rather forgettable! I SOOOOOOOOOO wanted to be there, but I appreciate all the work you put into your post. It almost made me feel like I was there! I watched all of the videos of the concert on youtube, and I must say that our David is growing up and coming into his own!!! He has always had the extraordinary talent to pull off live performances, but now he is turning into a consummate professional on stage. I am so proud to be an ardent fan of the most phenomenally gifted singer on the planet!!!
Juliebug, thanks for that radio interview link. I got distracted watching David twirl the microphone wiring around his fingers (he’s ridiculously adorable!). And what’s with his self-deprecating FALSITY that he’s a horrible dancer? Last time I checked (all those 50+ fan videos of him rocking out to Stand by Me), and from what his cousin Vanessa said about him doing the Harlem Shake, I do not recognize this two-left-feet-guy he’s describing as himself.
Methinks there is more work to do with regards to overcoming the humility thing.

oooh you know what I love the most about that little interview? I love when the interviewer asked “what are you doing for your 18th birthday?” David’s been asked this question many times, and every other time he’s said something like “oh I don’t know, I don’t really have plans, maybe be at home or something.” This time his answer was SO different..he said “I want to do something BIG! It’s a big one -- 18 is a big change”. WOW a change indeed! He really is growing in confidence and growing up…I love it!
I don’t deserve any sympathy here, but I’m asking for it anyway. I am suffering from post-David show letdown haha! I was in Archuheaven yesterday and today….., well today I’m just here, doing my usual stuff. Sigh……

HG -- I love ggdoors’ posts. She also posts at FOD. I remember her a couple of months ago defending David against a few posters over there who don’t get David and don’t think he’s urban enough to last. Have you seen those posts?

I don’t get why some think David comes across as “vanilla”, “Donny Osmond -ish” and is lacking in “edginess” or the urban vibe a la Chris Brown etc….. There is a depth to David’s vocal delivery and abilities that connect with his diverse fanbase in different ways. One segment of his diverse fanbase I’ve seen next to no discourse about IS the mad love and respect for this young man’s talent in the African American community.
It’s flown under the radar so much throughout Idol and the tour, but in my household, and throughout my community, on blogs and in many conversations, to a person he is viewed, in the same vernacular Paula once used to describe Elliott Yamin, as “one funky white boy”…. one of the highest terms of appreciation and respect my community gives to those so called “blue eyed soul singers” who have the vocal chops to “bring it”, and connect emotionally to us on that deep soulful level we’ve become accustomed to hearing from the great R&B singers of the past…. like Daryl Hall and John Oates of the past, and Robin Thicke in present day….
It was his Top 24 performance of SHOP AROUND that set the AA community on fire for him -- go back and re-watch it… it’s all there -- the swing, the soul, the gospel tinged swoop in his runs that cannot be taught… nothing boring or vanilla in that performance… yes, he may have some work to do in some stage presence, but we don’t expect him to be as smooth as a Jackie Wilson, or to dazzle us with slick moves and choreography a la James Brown -- or Chris Brown… The organic soul and R&B underpinnings in his vocal delivery pays homage to those greats who paved the way, and for that he has our admiration and respect… and we have Crush on our ipods and will be buying his album to see what he has in store for us… for many years to come…

I’m aware of David’s Latin roots, but the term “funky white boy” is a catch all term used affectionately
(and respectfully) for those singers… let’s say “other than AA”, who just organically “get” and tap into the soul, the groove, and sell the emotion of a song… many try but few really do a CONVINCING job of it -- Hall and Oates is one good example, Elton John in some of his early work (mad love for him), Elliott Yamin most definitely, Robin Thicke gives me hope….. David is so effortlessly soulful in his phrasing, his emphasis on hitting the notes… That’s a facet of his talent we picked up on early, and lamented not seeing more of this in his Idol tenure… but it’s there, bubbling right below the surface, and I personally cannot wait to see him unleash the “soul man” that is lurking underneath the pop stylings and material he will most likely be doing in the early albums… it’ll be worth it.
Liz..Ah well, you knew it would happen..the coming down from the HIGH after seeing David. And I have warned others what happens…it’s like..”oh no, when will I see him again, how long before I see him in person again”..It’s like all the excitement and anticipation of seeing David finally came and then it’s over way too soon and then you crash land back in your life.
I feel for you..just keep telling yourself..SOLO CONCERTS NEXT YEAR!!

Juliebug, I thought that name sounded familiar! I remember when she wrote those posts and set a few anti-Davids straight (those particular posters who couldn’t see past his Utah-raised, so-called “white wonderbread” upbringing and, therefore, dismissed the soul that is so clearly running in his veins and coloring the contours of his one vocal chord). The best part of ggdoor’s posts is those naysayers never said another word disputing this aspect of David’s performance and characterization after that. Heh.
HG -- thanks for that quote, “the old debate of…style over substance, talent verses flash.” I sat through Shontelle and Boys Like Girls (I actually sat and did meditative breathing through Boys Like Girls to make it through) and it was all flash and style, and if I can say this without sounding like a prude, it was vulgar. A false, forced sexiness, an in-your-face vulgarity. I was actually wondering how David was going to fit into this scene as the third performer, especially with such a young audience.
And then David came out, and completely stole the show. He was authentic, intense, sensual and downright sexy. Oh my…
Nothing beats substance, nothing beats the Voice.

Liz..remember what I said to you about David and his music versus today’s pop trash..that maybe David can bring about change, an appreciation for music and vocals the “teens” have been missing. I don’t know. It’s frustrating for us because we see David as the future of the music business as it should be, not as it has been for the last decade or so. We can only hope..

LM, to me, TWOP is a cut above VFTW in that they’re more cynical than mean-spirited, even though they do get mean on many occasions. They see conspiracy theories everywhere, which is why it was easy for many of the posters there to assume TPTB were “ramming David down our throats” (yes, that was the prevailing opionion on those forums) while Cook had an uphill battle, so they all thought.
Finale night, those people had a full on meltdown when they thought Simon had thrown Cookie under a bus in favor of David (and it was also at those forums that I learned that many a Cook fan -- read: anti-David Archuleta fanatic -- were coming up with various schemes to jam David’s phone lines. Just ridiculous!)
Nevertheless, I find the forums very interesting reading, just because of all the “grassy knoll” theories they come up with.

Happy, it’s pretty easy to sign up. But they have a gazillion little rules for you to follow, even it’s pretty arbitrary how they issue their ban (and like Juliebug said, you probably have to be a relative or a friend or something). It’s easy to sign up, but don’t praise David Archuleta. And, even if you had fun posting comments to get folks riled up, the mods WILL DELETE whatever posts they found “offensive” and then tell you that you’ve been banned for whatever reason (the reason I was given was for “lecturing” others -- hee hee).
HG -- interesting. I really never spent too much time on TWOP but the one time I did check it out it just turned me off. People just seem to get so nasty and not in a sarcastic/ironic way, which I can appreciate. But maybe I should give it another shot?
Its funny though, if those people love a good conspiracy theory, they should realize they were ultimately they were the ones that were duped. The other night I went back and watched some of Cook’s performances and the judges comments. After re-watching in light of the whole season, I actually think Simon was acting the whole time. Cook’s performance style really didn’t change/improve that much, although he did get a makeover. I think the whole thing was pretty much staged to seem like Simon hated Cook, wasn’t going to vote him through, thought he was smug, then somehow Cook made a believer out of him. They just wanted to build a dramatic arc, and for the rocker to win, although I never really thought (and still don’t) that Cook is on par with someone like Daughtry. Or maybe I just like Daughtry’s personality and music more..
Now that the “competition” is over, these TWOP and MJ people are stuck trying to justify thinking David Cook is God’s gift to music. The guy is fine musically, but unique he is not. He does fit the mold of today’s Nickelback/Lifehouse/Hinder, so he will do just fine. The thing that surprises me though is that despite the huge promotion he has had, he is not bigger than he is. Though David’s promotion has been smaller scale, I think he’s catching up.

To be fair…MJ is pretty fair in keeping the peace. She doesn’t let either side bash the other. And she likes David the person, a lot…she’s just not a big fan of his music. She’s allowed that. But she did buy his album and liked Crush and a couple of others. And she took back what she said about him not having a viable career. LOL! She even went to his breakfast at one of the radio interviews in Boston, talked with David and Jeff and David was so comfortable with her that he did the same thing he did with Lupe backstage at the Tulsa show…he turned to MJ and smiled really big and asked her if he had something in his teeth. haha!
LM, I completely agree with your assessment. I’ve always believed the “love” for Cook was based on the “hate” for David. It’s kind of hard to build a solid fanbase on that, but there you go.

Okay. People are gonna start hating on me, but so be it.

I must say I’m not getting it. Clueless over here. Personally, I didn’t see David do anything but dance around some on stage. He did show a little attitude, a bit of bravado, but so what? It’s is typical for lots of concerts and mild compared to most. (Witness Boys Like Girls.)
FYI, Mormons dance. Have always danced. We’re good with dancing. Established a concert hall for plays and dances in Salt Lake City in the late 1840s or so. First playhouse west of the Mississippi, if I remember correctly. David wasn’t explicit or nasty. He’s just a knock-out in the looks department, and we go gaga when he struts his stuff.
There’s no doctrinal clash that I’m aware of, and I’ve been a member for 37 years this month. David has yet to kiss a girl so I guess we can pretty conclusively say he’s not in dangerous territory behavior-wise. David will make his own choices in his personal life, as I am convinced he has and will in his music career.
I do think David would be very uncomfortable the way he is sometimes treated like a piece of meat here. Lovingly, in some ways maybe, but like meat nevertheless. I don’t think it’s cool when women are objectified and am not comfortable when I see David being treated that way, either. He deserves our respect. Who has earned it more than this young guy? No one I’m aware of. He’s a 100% class act whether he dances on stage or not.
What I wonder is…will Rascal or others throw him under the bus if he doesn’t break out and go walking on the wild side as anticipated? If David stays David as we’ve come to know him, will you be okay with it?

Feeling all this love and joy for David and for the like-minded (sometimes) but definitely kindred souls of a community he himself inspired, is quite fascinating.

That at some point, we or our thoughts are nothing but that unity? All else retreating in the background -- that at some point, we are enlivened and we wake up to what is real, pure and true?

Bookaholic — #282 -- I’m not talking about anything radical. I would never want David to abandon his principles. I am talking about some rather extreme limitations that certain factions (including some doctrine) would seek to impose. There are people out there, for example, David fans, who would prevent the distribution of certain photographs because his eyes are too sexy (I’m not kidding). This kind of attitude presupposes that people have no self control of their own, and that the aesthetic and sensual appeal of the human form is something to be avoided and restricted. It’s moral fascism. It’s silly. And when David, even in the smallest ways, decides to reject this, I observe a thinker with a streak of independence that is essential for a true artist.
(and what the heckfire is that flower thing? I love that he’s so game, but this is why he needs a good manager and why he needs to know when to say “no”….)

Bookaholic #282 -- Thank you for your post. You said what I’ve been feeling and thinking. I love coming to Rascal’s house, and I enjoy laughing at all the wonderful loving posts . . but I actually think David would be embarassed at some of the posts on this thread. (And yes, if you want to see mormons dance, just watch So You Think You Can Dance or Dancing With The Stars. . lots of Mormons on those shows.) I think many of us love David because of his personality, his innocence, his “Dorkiness” and purity. I don’t really want him to change a whole lot. That’s not to say I think his “church” and core beliefs should dictate how he should “run his business”,(nor would his church want to), but I believe his “religion” and “faith” are what formed him into the beautiful, “glowing”, and genuine person that he is and that if we want to embrace him as a person, we need to accept that his religion and faith are a huge part of what we are embracing. The whole “preventing certain pictures” because his eyes are too “sexy” . . well, that’s just silly. People will see what they want to see in the pictures. I truely don’t think those particular people -- who are trying to prevent those pictures from being shown -- are speaking for his church or even for most of the members of it. There are radicals in every religion. The general membership of the Mormon church are pretty much like David -- just trying to stick with what they believe to be right, and trying to love and accept others along the way. Most just want David to be David and not (as Rascal #291 said) “abandon his principles”. Bottom line for me is simply -- I don’t think David would be comfortable being called “sexy” a whole bunch. Maybe a “hunk” would be ok. . JMHO . . .

I don’t think that anyone here wants to embarass David, and I can only speak for myself but I do not want David to change his beliefs or his purity. We all have different feelings and opinions and that’s what makes life interesting. But I do not want to be misunderstood. David is a beautiful person inside and out, whether he likes it or owns it or not, I see it and celebrate it. I don’t seek to objectify him at all, I deeply respect him. I don’t feel that admiring his physical form is wrong, but that’s just my opinion. PEACE.

I’ve always said David doesn’t need anything but THE VOICE, a piano and a mic and we would come..in droves to see him.
The reason we celebrate the dancing is not just how he looks & moves, but the fact that he’s aware and IS comfortable with the affect he has on his audience. I share wth everyone here the joy of seeing David in all his glory up on that stage and it has nothing to do with disrespecting David at all. This is what I fear most..not that we here at rascal’s house, will ever turn our backs on him, cuz we all love and support David unconditonally and will forever, no matter what he does, but that if David ever does, to use your words, “breaks out & walks on the wild side” or even makes a “not like David” decision. there will be many who will not hesitate to throw him under the bus, and we all know who “they” are.
Please do not misunderstand me..I know David has a deep and abiding faith and that may just be the reason he had the fortitude to keep striving and working for what I believe he was born to do, and what he may have given up if not for his deep faith that this is God’s plan for him. What I want more than anything is for David to BE HAPPY doing what makes him happy..and that’s singing. I don’t care what, where or how he sings, as long as he continues to sing. That’s all. And if he chooses to add other dimensions to his singing, like strutting his stuff on stage to the delight of his fans, well that’s a bonus, but make no mistake..he knows what he’s doing, and more importantly he knows why he MUST at this juncture of his career. And I have to disagree about whether he would really be uncomfortable being called “sexy”. If you’re described that way over & over by many, many different people, you kinda have to start finally believing it, and I think, if his stage presence in Sac is any indication, David may have started buh-lieving..on my heck! It must be true! hahaha!

That is why all the talk about David being so innocent and an angel and not-of-this-world on other sites concerns me. He is incredibly talented and attractive, and from what I can see, a naturally sensual person, which is not uncommon for people in the arts. He is almost 18, not 5, and he won’t be even 18 forever. If (and I’m saying “if”) he ever makes decisions in certain areas that negate what a segment of his fanbase wants, it concerns me that they give him a backlash and abandon him, which would be incredibly sad. I hope that if that happens, by then David will have a strong circle of certain people very close to him (family, friends, and even possibly romantic) and fans, and including his own will and faith, that give him the strength to follow what he believes is right for him and HIS path.
Freofan and SF . . I agree with you, thank you for your thoughtful posts. I suppose the “sexy” part wasn’t the part I was mostly concerned about, however, if he read this whole thread, I wonder if he would ever want to “move” on stage again -- a little concerned about what some people are “looking” at. He has said time and time again . . he just wants to SING. And I hope all of us will always support his singing so that we can continue to hear THE VOICE until we die!
bookaholic #282, I totally agree with you! It bothers me when people start objectifying David as a gorgeous hunk and start losing sight of the fact that he is genuinely gifted from God. His expression of that gift needs to be our focus. I’m not saying that objectifying David is what’s going on at this site, but I think we get dangerously close to it. David is a very handsome young man and his natural charm and sweetness make him rather irresistible and I have often fallen under his “spell” as it were. But I reject the idea that David must have lots of worldly experiences in order to make his music more credible. David must remain true to himself and not listen to those who wish to change him into something he’s not. Many of us find his innocence refreshing. I’m not a prude or anything, and I am really enjoying watching David having fun on stage. I just want us to remember what drew us to David in the first place--his undeniable talent, his connection to his music, and his sweet humility.
