Archie Art: ’80s Division

Andrew from FOD/IFC does some very cool work (he’s the one that did all of those wonderful idol face icons). Here’s his newest, which strikes me as very ’80s-retro and very cool. Click the image for a large non-cropped version, and check out Andrew’s art page here.
Snow Watch
Well folks, the Archuletor does not disappoint. Here it is barely five days into the new year and we already have a nominee for 2009′s “Best Video Moment, Non-Performance.” You can see the entire interview here, but I extracted a moment that completely broke me up (and if you had any idea of the financial news we got at my agency today, you’d know what a challenge getting a laugh out of me tonight was–and how much I needed it). The reaction to the weather news is priceless. Oh, David, you really are too, too much fun.
Thanks for sharing Andrew’s latest creation. He’s really a talented guy, and for the record, I think the way you’re always providing links to other people’s artistry makes you “very cool” as well.
Very cool indeed.
He did those really cute face icons! I never saw the other ones except Cook’s (and David’s of course) which I always liked because it’s actually really funny. They are very simple and yet really capture each person’s features. You are very talented Andrew! Yay!
Nice work by Andrew. I like how he captures David’s eyes and those wonderful LIPS!
I convinced KSL-TV to put all the video of David during the Inauguration onto their website. There is video of David coming down the steps and also him performing the National Anthem, and can you believe, there were 3 cameras at the event and all 3 were pointed somewhere else when David hit the glory notes at the end! There is also an interview that David did before the ceremony for the show Studio-5. I used the raw footage so that you can see the stuff that happened after he was through.(like the nose warmer lol) It’s not the main video. You can access it on the right under the “Main Story Video”
Studio 5 interview – Utahn of the Year – prior to the inauguration
Check out his reaction around 1:35 when he learns that the area is on “snow watch.”

Oops, sorry, I keep forgetting the link!
http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=5233726
Just watched David’s NA performance..he was freezing and still did an awesome job…Oh and what should we call him now…MR. UTAH? After all, he is the UTAHN of the year!! No coming in 2nd in THAT contest!! BTW…
I love David Archuleta!!
#7 cutter12 – thanks for the link. I enjoyed the different camera angles while he sang.
I loved the sentence in the write up: “…when it was all over, for some, the highlight was clear: David Archuleta….” They had a breakaway to the audience while David sang that showed the rapt attention of the listeners and their cameras recording his performance.
http://www.myfoxutah.com/myfox/MyFox/pages/sidebar_video.jsp?contentId=8195712&version=1&locale=EN-US – Another interview and the reporter says at the end that David’s celebrity status was “almost eclipsing the purpose of the ceremony here today.” –ahahaha.
He talks a little more about his tour and singing his own music.
Love the snow watch! We do love you David. Glad to hear that you were cheered up, rascal.
And the interviews make no mention of opening for someone, only a SOLO tour. Yay!
One more thing – why are they interviewing him outside in the frigging COLD?? I just don’t get that! It was 18 degrees for crying out loud!
Rascal: Nice art from Andrew. I wonder if he drew inspiration from the Elle picture shoot?
Cutter12: Thanks for the link showing David singing the National Anthem at the Utah Gov’s inauguration. He sang it so beautifully, and in 18 degree weather. Amazing! I loved the way the flag couldn’t resist caressing him! LOL!
I posted last on the previous thread, so i’m bringing it over here:
The Studio 5 interview is a must see!
I keep rewinding to the part where they discuss the snow forecast. His reaction is so adorable. His face is just pinchable – is that a word? How can he look so innocent and cute here and then sound so smexy on a radio interview in Toronto? The way he tells the lady dj ‘You have a cool look’ would’ve made me melt. Dang!
(((Cutter))))))) Thanks!!!! loved all that.
Thanks, Rascal! And the handwarmer on the nose??? omigosh, I’m investing all my savings in cloning!!!
Beautiful work once again, Andrew (from Newfoundland, right?). LOVE your designs!
Sorry, the adorkable bit I mentioned is at the very end of this one:
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=5233726
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=5233726
And click on “Archuleta on Studio 5″ to the left, sheesh, sorry, guys.
realmusiclover, “I loved the way the flag couldn’t resist caressing him! LOL!” That’s a good one! Hahaha!
rascal, just noticed the added clip above. He is the most adorable guy, isn’t he?!! He just warms my heart. And TOfan, “the handwarmer on the nose” is just too cute!
ON the Utahn of the Year interview:
IT IS??? (TheFACE! TheFACE!!!! That was precious
bwahahahahahahahaha. Love You David James Archuleta!
Can we clone him pleeaaaaaseeeeee?
I wonder why David didn’t keep the long coat and hand warmers on when he sang the NA! It’s not like he didn’t look good in the calf length coat..in fact he LOOKED GREAT!!
So David really doesn’t “care” for snow and the cold air is bad for his voice..ok, I know he loves Utah and the people there, and they want to “keep” him..but he should come live by me..uh, it’s just a thought.
ALTNOY..is released as David’s second single tomorrow !!
rascal’s beautiful SOT video has over 5800 views!!
Oh yeah, and I love David Archuleta!!
JR…
He makes for a very good argument for further research into cloning!!
I am going to change the subject a bit before I leave for awhile…
In David’s latest blog he mentions Charice on Oprah with David Foster on the piano…really nice to hear…
There is no one in this world anymore astounding then David…no one anymore charismatic…
Why or how can he be overlooked and not on Oprah actually long before this??
To be with David Foster is to have you in all the big places that is for sure and that makes the difference that Jive cannot give him…Everyone knows and respects David Foster so someone needs to get the lead out and give David the presentation he is deserving of…How much more noise can fans all over North America make to be heard?
There are a lot of people here who have the talents and abilities to find the way…possibly…someone give someone the nudge that they need…Actually, this is ridiculous I don’t want to see any more fantastic people before we see David on Oprah…
The Taurus,,,the bull..
I would like to officially nominate David’s reaction to the weather news in the clip above as the year’s first most Archu-adorkable moment caught on video.
Rascal, your video on you tube is getting some very well-deserved attention, as I’m sure you’re aware. I can’t seem to stop watching it, and break into sobs each time. Thank you again for repeatedly converting me into a blubbering mess.
Quote from Gov. Huntsman at today’s inauguration, “As you know Mary Kaye [his wife] and I have term limited ourselves, but I think everyone here would agree that David Archuleta should do no such thing.” tee hee . . Utah is very proud of David! As they should be!
sandybeaches..that is a very good question…why hasn’t the big O asked the big D to be a guest on her big show?
Who do we call to complain and demand he be a special guest to sing SOT with THE VIDEO showing on a big screen in the background!! Can you just picture it?? Then he can sing ALTNOY! Just a thought.
Anyway..I’m tired..so good night all..and David..thank you for today! You are my IDOL..I love you!!
Dear Lord, Though we are unworthy to ask,
Please take Care Of David. Watch over him, Protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his ARCHANGELS do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his wellbeing. Give him rest when he’s weary. Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms. Keep David healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
This, though we may be unworthy, humbly pray,
Amen.
Sweet dreams! Be safe & secure in our love always! Take care. You will always be numero uno in our eyes! Thank you for all you do and for just being you!
CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!
SF Sweet dreams, my friend.
…And give him warmth when he is cold.
I just went to Oprah’s website and submitted a letter with the link to Rascal’s video and a short note talking about how it highlights the sacrifices of our service people and their families and would make a nice addition to a show about that (hoping they like it enough to do something MORE with it).
I also mentioned how David Archuleta gives his name and his time and money to many charities, even as he is just beginning his own career, and that they should interview him and show that side of his character and, of course, have him sing on the show as well. Hey, you never know till you try!
Good night everyone! Classes start tomorrow and I am incredibly swamped. Of my two classes, two are going to be intense, but a lot of fun. The David stuff is a wonderful break!
Can’t wait to see his single rise up the ranks!
Archuleta rocks Governor’s inauguration
National anthem
“American Idol” runner-up wows crowd at his second Utah inaugural performance
By David Burger/ The Salt Lake Tribune/ Updated: 01/05/2009 08:30:19 PM MST
Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. might be considered a media-savvy, polished politician, but at his inauguration on Monday even he couldn’t compete with David Archuleta for the screams and shrieks of young audience members.
Archuleta, the Murray 18-year-old who finished second in the most recent season of FOX’s TV juggernaut “American Idol,” made a brief appearance on the south steps of the Utah State Capital for the governor’s swearing-in ceremony. The singer performed the national anthem, again, at the request of the governor, four years after the then-14-year-old sang at Huntsman’s first inaugural ceremony.
On Monday, Archuleta’s appearance drew many young teen and pre-teen girls to the brief outdoor ceremony. Clad in a
dark brown sweater, plaid scarf and black skinny jeans, the faux-hawked Archuleta looked much different than he did during his first inaugural performance. Then he wore a schoolboy’s busy tie, demin shirt and dark suit, his bowl-cut hair combed down onto his forehead.
Four years ago, Archuleta’s performance of the national anthem was strong yet slightly tentative, and the singer stumbled a bit on the phrase “broad stripes and bright stars.” Then he verged precariously close to being off-pitch, especially early in the song as he nervously licked his lips. At the conclusion, he received a smattering of polite applause.
On Monday, in contrast Archuleta was shaking, but only because of the cold temperatures, as he performed

without a hat, jacket or gloves. When the teen began the song, it was obvious that performing in front of millions of people in the last year, both on tour and in front of a national TV audience, had bolstered his confidence. The soulful tenor was dramatic, his phrasing marked with melismas — that is, singing single syllables while moving between several different notes — but not overly showy. The highlight came when his voice soared at the end of the song, on the lyrics “Oh, say does that star spangled banner yet wave,” hitting the high notes that have doomed many an anthem singer at baseball stadiums.
Unlike four years ago, he was rewarded with squeals from young fans, and as well as a pat on the back from Thomas Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
After his performance, Archuleta exited the ceremony by cutting through the Capitol, while scores of girls playing hooky from school followed him. The 18-year-oldmet fans in the State Reception Room, where Huntsman a half-hour later would greet well-wishers and the media. The singer cheerfully responded to fan requests, placing cell phone calls to friends, or hugging daughters and mothers while signing autographs of his self-titled CD.
He apologized for shaking during the ceremony. “I don’t handle cold very well,” he said.
Afterward, 15-year-old Megan Smith was grinning as she told her friend, “He touched my marker!”

Oh my honey, don’t you just love it? Cutting though the Capital with throngs of school- cutting girls close on his heels. Holding court in the State Reception Room where the Governor would soon be recieving guest. Looks like the Utahn of the Year overshadowed the governor at his own innaugaration!
Angelice – thanks for that story from the trib.I’m grinning from ear to ear! Loooooved it!
Angelica (sorry I misspelled your name)
Thanks for that article, Angelica. I’m seriously grinning and chuckling throughout the whole read! I am very, very HAPPY for him and his family! He has changed the way I view many aspects in life. All for the better, as my family has noticed. I’m just cruisin’ along, waiting for all the doubters to “get-on-board-the-Archuleta-ride”. The words “I told you so” will never be sweeter!
I actually wrote Oprah 2x last year… of course I did not share it with anyone as ODD was not yet in vogue at that time.
Aside from his immense talent, my 1st letter’s arc was the parallelism of Oprah’s Angel network and how David on his own way and by his inspiration has compelled people in all walks of life – his own network of Arch Angels – to do good deeds . I thought that was a good match to bring up.I even sent the link of the street team efforts of the angels… some funny stuff so that they can see how well rounded and organic is his impact on people.
The 2nd letter focuses again on his talent and his youth cos at that time they were talking about featuring young kids with talent. I also talked about how David has impacted me, half way around the globe + highlighting his universal appeal, how he conquered his vocal cord paralysis.. wait, I think this was my 1st letter… Have forgotten it now and sadly as my laptop crashed, I wasn’t able to keep copies of those letters – dang it!
Am sure there are many more who wrote to Oprah about him. But perhaps if more letters pour in, Oprah’s staff will take notice… Or if some of Rascal’s choice articles or videos could be sent… just sayin…
SF – I spent my HS years in a special science high school (yeah that’s the source of my nerdiness!) but there are things that I draw the line — cloning for example. Well… that is until TheVOICE came along!
And the coat – I found him dashing.. caught myself saying to myself, how debonair this young man is growing up to be… Good thing my kids were nowhere near me!
Sandy it won’t be far fetched to think that David F was interested in David.. am not sure but I think there was an article mentioning this last year… but at any rate, David F also knew that TPTB with E19 still has their claws on him so perhaps he is bidding his time.
One misgiving I have though if in the future the 2 new set of Davids do collaborate, is for our David to be typecasted as a young JoshG, which may limit his artistry. We all know he is more than that.
JR4DA: I suspected people here had written to Oprah, since there is a lot of talk about her not having David on her show. But, I thought Rascal’s video deserved some attention, too. It’s such an amazing video and music combo. And then I just added a little bit more and a little bit more
JR4DA I know for a fact that people on other fan sites have been writing to Oprah for months requesting David be put on her show. They have pointed out how his music and character have affected their lives in such positive ways. Don’t know what the deal is with that. I don’t watch her show but I know a lot of people do. I guess it’s just a matter of time. ??
AN ARCHULETA INAUGURAL
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/americanidoltracker/2009/01/an-archuleta-in.html
Mr. Rushfield sure loves our David
Thank you to everyone who has written to Oprah and I have as well…But now it is all up to the alignment of the earth, moon sun and stars…I guess it will surely just be a matter of time…When You Believe…
jackryan4DA…I don’t think that DF would change David in any way…I don’t know why I say that except that David is on the same wave length as DF… but maybe he would balance the ballad songs a bit more with all the others…I met DF once through Wayne Gretzky when we were in Edmonton watching the playoffs…a long, long time ago…
In regards to….OPRAH…I just sent along another request to have David on her show and referred the producers to this site etc…All for tonight…
Huntsman begins second term
Not only was Monday’s inauguration ceremony for Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and other state officials the first held on the steps of the Capitol, there’s little doubt it was also the first such ceremony to attract squealing teenage girls.
They were there to hear “American Idol” finalist David Archuleta, a Murray High School student, sing the national anthem. Some slipped away after the young star was escorted off the makeshift stage following his performance.

“It is?”
He cracks me up. LOL.
And squealing national anthem fans FTW!
our self confessed dork, our brand new young man, the world’s idol is a genuine clown! he is hilarious, harhar!
It is a new year…
American Idol was over many months ago…
David’s introduction is past the time of being labelled “finished second”…that’s history journalists, old history…old news, old hat…NEW INTRO PLEASE…
Why is it that watching that vid of David’s snow watch response and his nose warming just make me sooo happy?
Rascal I’m glad it cheered your day, it did the exact same for me….Is he real? How can he be real? I need to see him again soon, just to be reassured….
Andrew love your art work..
One more little ‘tidbit’ about the inauguration . . after David sang so beautifully, President Monson reached over and gave him a fatherly pat on the back.
Lucky David!
Oh . . and by-the-way . . the snow started about 20 minutes after the ceremony ended, and is still going.:(
SandyBeaches #45 – I agree with you 100% – it is time for a new intro – no more “runner up”, “finished second”, etc. etc. I wonder what it will take for the media to realize that AI7 is over???
refnaf #46…I think that we must belong to a healthy group of people, the description I cannot yet figure…I am stumped on that…But the people have to be special in some ways…but what ways? Perhaps we see, hear and understand at a greater level..like only some people can…I should get back to work…!!!
Oh, before I go…David is second to no one…never a runner up to anyone…his placement is his own…and it’s lonely at the top…that is why he has everyone here…
Just had to watch David sing the Anthem again this morning (okay, maybe twice…ish). And I was struck by how beautifully still and quiet the place was.
I know screaming audiences (me included, hopefully!) will be the order of the day in the foreseeable future, so it was lovely to hear David’s voice, and only his voice, soar to the mountains beyond.
SandyBeaches#49..for lack of a better explanation as to the whys..kinda like
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, except we
are in a group of..
Close Encounters of the Most Blissful Kind..haha!
Who knows why see & hear David with different eyes & ears..maybe it comes down to some of us needing someone like David and opening our hearts to him at a time we were ready for him. For some, it was instant, quick, like lightening, for others it’s been gradual, and for others, it hasn’t happened yet. Others still, sadly, will never have what we have with David and each other. It’s a mystery…
I am listening to THE ALBUM, just finishing the bonus tracks..Still get blown away by David’s vocals. He just doesn’t sing like the 17 YO he was when he recorded The Album. Every one of these bonus tracks are so good! Now listening to Desperate. Listening to David’s voice on stereo headsets is such a sublime experience..I could describe it, but I might offend…..
I was also thinking about Oprah..since it apprears her people have received letters about David, and surely, Oprah herself knows about David..it’s her thing, knowing who’s UP & Coming in the business..so if David has not been invited to guest & sing on her show, maybe there’s something else going on. Something about David that intimidates Oprah??? or he has been invited, and David’s management didn’t like the stipulations on the invite..I mean…what is the deal..something is really fishy there. It has to happen sooner or later..but I don’t think David is holding his breath..his fans want it more than he does..as for me, I don’t really care..appearing on her show isn’t going to make him bigger..he doesn’t “need” her endorsement.
Dang..now listening to Smokey Mountain Memories..
WHAT A VOICE!!
I have every single song ever sung by David on my mp3 player..and they aren’t in order..I shuffle the songs so I get different chills & thrills with each song!
Sublime!
silverfox…you are actually a riot!!
Besides the fact that David may fit our current needs…there is more and I bet rascal can find the words for it…RASCAL ?
For me it was the first singing of Imagine that really had my eyes open wide..and no turning back…He reaches deeper into the soul then any other artist can…but maybe it is into those with deep souls…
Gotta go our labs are coming home from the osteopath following their adjustments…the two lads play too hard and I need to be ready for them at the door…how do I tell them they can’t play for two days?!
SB… i agree that certain people are moved so deeply by David’s voice for a reason……That reason is probably unique to each of us…I am just thankful to be on the receiving end of this gift.
refnaf…I couldn’t think of a better gift…that keeps on giving…and I know that it would be a fun party to get together…someday
SandyBeaches..hope your labs are doing well. My labs are so old.( close to 18 yo ). They are such good dogs..they take care of me. Make sure I’m safe in my house..As old as they are, they will attack (or at least try ) anyone who comes in my house uninvited..
But after they are gone..no more dogs for me. It wouldn’t be fair….
oh-oh…Works for Me is playing now…Dang! I just love
David Archuleta!!
It wouldn’t be fair to get another dog if I expect to follow David from concert to concert! …hahaha!
I love how creative we are all inspired to be. I even broke out my old watercolors (threw out most of them – too old) and when my husband noticed that he bought me all new art supplies for christmas.
I can’t help but comment on the SOT video. It is real life. My son finally admitted to me today that he needs to see a doctor. He has an advocate (for vets) that believes he has a traumatic brain injury undiagnosed by the army.
He was in 2 IED’s. He calls it “being blown up twice”
It is so painful to think about my boy being hurt in any way.
This war is so on the backburner for most people – barely a blip on the screen.
Thanks for not forgetting about the real people who are over there. Believe me, they don’t want to be.
Betsy…My heart breaks for you! I wish I could just hug you!
There’s so much that the young men & women, who have been and are still in Iraq and other war torn countries, have been through that we will never know or begin to understand. To come back unscathed is unrealistic…just because there are no visible, or physical injuries..the injury to their heart & soul is immeasurable.
It is too bad that the war has been put on the backburner by the media due to the other so-called more pressing issues we have..most of which we wouldn’t have if not for the war in Iraq..so ironic!
Betsy, #58, thanks for your post, although it made me cry. Both sadness for your son and the poignancy of your husband getting you new art supplies.
betsy, I am so sorry to hear about your son. I hope that he can be treated very soon and heals in time.
You have a very thoughtful husband, I’m sure you already know that! Anybody who likes to paint is a kindredspirit of mine.
((((hugs))))) Betsy, my fellow taurus and water colour painter.
Betsy, the media may, but we won’t forget your son or the other sons and daughters over there. I hope and pray he makes a full recovery. David has inspired me to start painting again too. Painting and drawing was my major in college, and I especially loved watercolor. Isn’t it wonderful how he causes us to remember who we are, by so fully being who he is?
Angelica, painting and drawing was my major too in college. If I had been born a Capricorn, perhaps I could’ve had the “built-in self-discipline” that young David obviously possesses! Capricorn or not, I so admire that and his steadfast dedication to his art, along with the million other qualities he has! I’m a daydreaming Pisces but love drawing and painting with all my heart.
Vermeer, yes, if only we had the tenaciousness of the crab. I’m a Libra, the scales, always weighing and trying to find the perfect balance…not gonna happen. lol.
Whoops! I mean the stubborness of the goat. Cancer is the crab.
Cutter12, #5, in my haste to post earlier I forgot to say thanks for that raw footage!! And how come David looked absolutely freezing until he started singing? Wow, such focus….
betsy, your son is my prayers – and please thank him for me for his service – and thank you too – sending hugs to you.
You certainly do have a thoughtful and kind husband!
Betsy – I echo what the others have said. I can’t thank you or your son enough for the sacrafice you have made and are making. . . you and so many others. We are free because of all of you. The love and appreciation we feel is what makes us cry every time we watch Rascal’s SOT vid. {{{{hugs}}}}
I just had to watch the “snow watch” video again . . Gaaaah. He is so DANG cute!
I’m sure they’re a much more talented bunch than Miley Cyrus. This article about them is nice.
