You certainly are aptly named, Mr. Rascal. Seriously, the video was beautiful and, since I do have blood flowing through my veins, very, very moving. We get so caught up in the politics of war, we lose sight of the stark humanity of it. This should be required viewing for all people, of all ages, everywhere.

As for the song, all I have to say is “Oy, what a song”. If this were the 1970s, this song would have been released already and would have been #1 on every chart but Disco. Nothing ever released by Dan Fogleberg, Elton John, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Carole King (who I love), Carly Simon, Neil Sedaka, or any ot the other singer/songwriters of that era can compare with “Somebody Out There” It is a chill-fest from start to finish, and a musical work of breathtaking art of the first order. David’s voice takes you to the place he wants you to go, and when you get there, you never want to leave. I cannot imagine what will happen when he sings this song live in front of thousands of his adoring fans. This song not only moves you, it heals you.

I LOVE “Somebody Out There”, it’s one of my absolute favorties, and his album has other fantastic songs too.

I was talking to FREOFAN the other night and saying that I could really picture David singing “Falling” at a benefit concert for people suffering from depression.

Joner#43..Yes! David’s song FALLING which he wrote by himself, words & music..is another song that too little is made mention of. Granted, it’s a sad song. And I think maybe the reason it’s not “talked” about as much is due to why David wrote the song. But the song is another beautiful song sung beautifully with soaring vocals by David. Everyone who has ever had even a moment of depression, for whatever reason, can relate to this song.
Obviously, David is proud of his song and JIVE also must have seen something in this song to have agreed to include it as a bonus selection.
When I told David how much his song FALLING meant to me personally, and how much I loved it, he looked a little surprised for a split second, he thanked me in his modest, sweet way. He was truly touched. I’m glad I was able to let him know I understood the message of the song, that not all is lost, there’s always a new day, a reason to go on, hope and light at the end of the darkness. There’s always something more to keep going for.
David was 14 when he wrote this song..Amazing!

SF #55: I devoutly, staunchly, whole heartedly believe that “Falling” is a sleeper–it will get the attention it deserves at some point down the road. It may get its attention as a theme song for a big screen Movie or a smash Broadway play. It is so extremely evocatively powerful that when I listen to it I have to mentally prepare myself for the sadness, the gut wrenching despair that it creates for me–it is powerfully heavy. I believe this is the most potent SAD song that I have ever heard despite the upswing of hope at at the end. Ggggaaaaaaaahhhhh!

Shameless emotional manipulation always brings me out of lurk-dom.

This video is brilliant for the same reason we all (hardcore original fans of David) love SOT so much – David is singing a message song from his heart and soul that touches our heart and soul and HEALS. We all know this is the sole reason David sings. So the video fits. Most (not all) of the songs on the album take on a deeper meaning when you listen with an ear to eliminating the surface romantic overtones.

So thanks rascal, for matching images that sensitize and heal our hearts the same way David’s voice does.

Kizzi, Falling is so sad that some people can’t or won’t listen to it more than once. But when I think that DAVID as a 14 yo, could write such a song, it blows my mind. What a huge heart, what great compassion he has. That he could FEEL what it feels like to be falling into an abyss of despair is as they say..too much! I really hope you’re right. I think the only way the masses will hear it, REALLY hear the song & the message is if it’s used as a theme song..I can only hope, cuz I think it means a lot to David to have his fans appreciate it.

SF and Kizzi, I completely agree with you about Falling. The first time I heard it I was speechless and moved and absolutely WOWED…beyond description. I thought “grammy” right then and there. It wrings me out emotionally every time I listen. I think via a movie sound track would be a truly effective mode of “delivery” to the world, and fitting. (Now we just have to write the Movie. No prob. Hop on it, somebody!)

Whether one believes or not, IMHO we are all made up of more than what meets the human eye. We all have experiences that need to be healed and I believe THIS is what makes David so special and sets him apart from other artists.
His interpretative musical skills can make us squeel with delight, rock out with the best of them, or kicked in the gut with a wrenching message song.
I truly believe God has richly blessed and empowered him through the beauty of his miracle voice and innate musicality with the ability to smooth out the jagged edges of life for many of us – be it with laughter, joy or tears for cartharis.
Following the exploits of this young man has brought me such intense happiness especially at this time in the world at large. A new blog, TV/Radio appearance, scratchy audio cellcast, event vids or still photos, regardless the media, the JOY remains the same.
As the song title suggests – God must have spent a little more time – on David.

This is a lovely interpretation of a beautiful song. I have often thought that it could be offer comfort to a mother who is worrying about her children. Worries often control moms and they need someone to hold them–a son who recognizes this is unbelievably precious.

JR..HS Graduations here usually take place at the end of May, or early June.

That will be a BIG day for David..If it’s held indoors, at least they can control the paparazzi, but if it’s outdoors as many of them are..well look out!. I hope he has a chance to celebrate that day with his school friends and family without all the hoopla that’s bound to follow him and taking away from the other graduates’ accomplishments. I don’t think David would be happy about taking all the limelight.

More thoughts on the video.

When I first watched the SOT video I was loving all the warm family photos. Ah I thought, these are a wide variety of people, of family groups, of people who are those “somebody-out-theres” for each other. Diverse groups of truly loving, beautiful people.

Then….the soldiers. Oh my gawd, I really felt the loneliness, the pain, the boredom, the frustration, the terror.

And then, the reunions. Is there anything more pure and holy than the love of a child and father? Those hugs took me back to primal childhood memories of the warmth and protection of my father, the smell of his clothes and the large roughness of his hand as we walked together, my small footsteps trying to match his large ones. That feeling of protection, of warmth, of Love.

Thank you rascal. Thank you David.

Your initial post compelled me to send rascal’s beautiful video to a neighbor. I was hesitant at first because back when David’s CD first came out I had anonymously put his CD in this neighbor’s newspaper box. I thought the family might like it. Now I would have to fess up. Well, I sent the video last night and today I found out I have another Archuleta friend. She loves David’s music. Like you, my neighbor’s husband is in the armed serves and they are facing an extended TDY this year. She loved the video and couldn’t stop crying. I asked her to share it with her network of friends.

Has it been confirmed that David is indeed attending the inauguration as a guest? I can’t find a list of celebrities who have been invited and confirmed to attend.

If David was spotted at the game, I wonder if they are in LA now? Also, I’m surprised that he did not also take David’s younger brother, a big sports fan from what I hear.

I read that David has been invited, along with Lance Bass and other artists (there’s some very big names but can’t remember which ones), to attend at RIAA (I think that’s the correct abbreviation) party in D.C.

Freofan..about Daniel, that is a good question. And maybe I missed seeing him, but was Daniel at David’s NYE event? I couldn’t see him on any video.

Hi SF! I’m doing pretty well. Trying to get stoked for going back to work tomorrow after two weeks off. The biggest adjustment will be NO DAVID for 7 hours straight during the day. YIKES!!

The way that David handles words makes his songs so universal. I am currently teaching a music class for parents, new moms, with babies under 8 months old, so I read them phrases of the lyrics from You Can and asked them to think about their newborns… this is where it all begins…if anyone can make me fall in love, you can…save me from myself, you can…etc. Then we waltzed around the room with their babies to the song, You Can, from the CD. So lovely.
Actually… that scene would make a beautiful video.

I was waiting & hoping that HG would come in today. I wanted to tell her about the dream I had about David last night. Since she didn’t maybe she’ll see it tomorrow. I want to say first that this dream seemed so real that I can’t get it out of my mind, so please just bare with me..

Like one of my other dreams, I was apparently an employee of David’s, in what capacity, I don’t know. We were in some kind of office-like setting, David was sitting on a couch and wasn’t feeling well. I was at a computer doing who knows what. I asked David if I could get him anything before I left, and he asked if I could get him a bottle of water. When I came back, he was dozing and he had dropped an old looking binder on the floor. I picked it up and saw that it was filled with David’s writing. Page after page of words..lyrics. David woke up and as I handed it to him, I asked him about it. He said they were
songs he’s been writing since he was 11 yo. He showed me some of the songs and he even sang some of them for me. He said no one else knew about the binder, not even his mom & dad. He said there was only one song from the binder that his dad knew about. And that was only by mistake. He was singing it and his dad heard him and insisted he sing the whole thing for him..his dad name the song Falling. David said he’s saving the songs for the time he has full control of what he can record. I started arguing with him, telling him he needed to bring the songs out in the open, let everyone know about them..I was almost in tears cuz the lyrics were so beautiful..one of the titles I remember was..
The Sum Of My Life, another title was
Yesterday Today Tomorrow, and another was
Ties, Lies & Goodbyes ( or something like that).
The songs were so good..I can hear the way he sang them. I couldn’t believe he was keeping them secret. He made me promise I wouldn’t say anything. I just looked at him. He said look, I trust you. Don’t let me down. The songs in this book are the stories, the different chapters of my life..I’m not ready yet to tell my stories. I asked if I could see his last song, he said it wasn’t finished yet..he said I’m still living that song.

I don’t remember a lot of the rest of the dream..it kind of ended. But I remembered the titles of those three songs so clearly..I couldn’t forget them. It seems like it was a long dream but it wasn’t..I wished I could go back to sleep hoping I could continue the dream. It was so real to me. So now I’m thinking David wrote more songs throughout the years, not just FALLING..makes sense to me.

While I was in Trinidad for Christmas, the paper made a mention of her birthday – I think it is only a couple days apart from David – 20 something of December. Maybe that’s whay they really admire each other so much.

New Years Resolution?

I hope everyone’s having a great new year so far! I have an official resolution I have set which I’m going to try and keep up with this year, but I’m going to keep it to myself to see how well I do until the end haha… But if you guys don’t mind sharing your resolutions feel free to! I think it’s fun to know about those kinds of things. I performed at a thing in Orem, Utah called Newphoria which was great. My parents, little sisters, and a bunch of my friends were able to come and celebrate! I sang ALTNOY and Crush, and there were some other really neat acts there. My friends, The Osmonds 2nd Generation who were also performing earlier, got a hold of me and invited me to do it. I thought it was a really fun way to celebrate while at home, and I was sooo happy to have my friends and family there with me. We had a blast! Ashley Tisdale was also there hosting. We danced like idiots, and I got some good exercise out of it.
This weekend I went to San Diego to visit a girl for Make-A-Wish who was having a very difficult time battling cancer. It was probably one of the most special things I have ever experienced, and incredibly touching. It helped me even more to be motivated and act. We need to keep ..ing those who battle against such sicknesses. I want to thank those of you who are so strong in facing those kinds of obstacles, and are such an example of hope and strength. Something like that reminds me of what matters most in this life, and I hope to never forget that. I want to thank her and her family, and I want them to know I’m strongly keeping them in my prayers. I’m also so appreciative of Make-A-Wish for allowing incredible things to happen for kids and let their dreams come true. And THANK YOU!! to all of you guys for your donations that you’ve been sending for such great causes! A lot of you have made donations in my name, so thanks for doing that. I always think about how those donations will help out, even if it’s not a huge contribution. That small amount can help change someone’s life one way or another, and just thinking about it gives me the chills. But anyway, sorry for going off on that, I just felt like it was something important to let out.
While we were in San Diego, I got to meet up with one of my friends who was there on vacation. Their family was going to the Chargers vs. Colts game, so we decided to go too! It was such an exciting game, and I’m really glad I was able to see my friend haha. I think it’s cool to meet up with buddies somewhere different from where you live. It was my first NFL game, and the crowd was nuts. The really cool thing about it is the game was at Qualcomm Stadium, which is where I first auditioned for American Idol! It brought back a lot of memories of a lot of waiting lol. But it was cool, and neat to think about how it all started.
Today I’ll be singing at Utah’s Governor Huntsman’s inauguration, and even though it’s FREEZING… it should be a good time. I actually sang at the Governor Huntsman’s inauguration the first time lol. But yeah. It’s actually so hard to sing when it’s cold! I tend to lose my voice in cold weather, and I must be cold-blooded because I just don’t do well with low temperatures. I’ll let you know how it went in my next blog, but I better get going here. Unlike my last blog, this is pretty long haha. So I’ll talk to you guys later!

P.S. Before I go I wanted to mention one thing real quick. I was hanging out at my house when my parents called me in to watch a story on Oprah about this girl named Charice. I had seen her on youtube before and she was at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, but it was amazing to hear her story and her voice! She seriously has one of the best voices I’ve heard in a long time, and I had chills the entire time I was watching about her life. So instead of a song for the day I think you should check her out! It’s more like a person for the day haha. She was really inspiring and for those of you who haven’t heard her yet I think you’re in for a real treat! She sang My Heart Will Go On during her appearance on Oprah, and it’s amazing to see how much passion she has for what she does! I also loved how she talked about how important her mom was to her. I hope you guys enjoy!

For some reason, I LIKE that he’s inexperienced. Makes him soooo, I don’t know..PRISTINE, like a perfect, flawless, priceless diamond. Makes him “special”.
Ah, but it’s bound to happen someday, soon..only not yet, please! But you know what? We may never know when it happens cuz he will never tell..it’ll have to come from the “lucky one”…And I know he’s 18!!
I know..I’m acting like his mama or abuelita..which he already has, and I have to keep reminding myself.

I wonder if his resolution is to improve on his public speaking and performance skills or…

to make time to exercise more and eat healthier or…

spend more of his time on charities or…

be more assertive and decisive when making decisions…

Delurking even though I have about ten seconds (kids still home for winter break) to weigh in on David’s resolution.

Bet it is something ongoing because of the wording. The running, the writing, the schooling??? We may never know, but I wish him well in his efforts.

On that first kiss: I think that’ll happen when he’s ready and not one minute sooner or later. And I’m for it, whenever it happens. Kissing is FUN and IMO it can’t impact David negatively. He will remain who he is, but will enjoy an extra enjoyment in life. And since it’ll mean he’s developing a relationship with a girl he cares for — well, that’s a GREAT thing in my view.

David just performed. He was awesome as usual! Apparently flags are attracted to David too…the one the guy was holding next to him kept flapping around his cute little head. He handled the “intrusion” like a pro!

ROTFLMAO at all the speculation swirling around about David’s “mystery” resolution … and it’s probably something like “buy more cheese for my stalker mice”!!

Hi – Just wanted to check in after watching David sing at Governor Huntsman’s inauguration. I hope you all got to see it. David sang flawlessly! It was the most beautiful rendention of our national anthem I have ever heard. I must give my commentary now . . for my heart is bursting for David.

First of all, he seemed very “chattie” as he walked down the steps in the forman procession. I think he was nervous. (there were some very important people surrounding him)

When he sang, he had the Utah flag flapping around . . he didn’t even seem to notice it.

But the part that really touched my heart is a “Mormon” thing. Standing right next to David as he sang, with his hand on his heart, was the President and Prophet of the Mormon church, President Thomas S. Monson. That would be like a catholic (18 year old), to sing standing right next to the Pope. There are millions of mormons all over the world who would love to meet President Monson. In fact, I noticed, after he sang as they did the color guard presentation of the flags, etc., David was still standing right next to Pres. Monson, and he kept looking up at him instead of looking at the flags. Very cute!

Another poignant occurance happened after they posted the colors . . three jets or helicopters flew over with a moment of silence, to respect and represent the soldiers from Utah who are presently serving. I could just hear David singing Somebody Out There and remembering Rascals beautiful video. And yes, I cried. It was great! I am so happy for David and so proud of him. He may not talk about it much as he blogs to the world, but I am certain that today was a thoroughly spectacular day for him.

Oh, one more thing. President Monson LOVES music. He attends musicals all the time. His wife calls him a music-a-holic. Once, when he attended a musical my son was in he shook his hand, looked him straight in the eye, and said “You do more good than you know.” My son will never forget that moment with Pres. Monson.

I thought that last year would be hard to top for David, but I’m honestly getting the feeling that this year is going to be spectacular for him in so many ways! Can’t you just feel the momentum building??? The air seems positively electric around him!

Definitely! As soon as we get a whiff of dates to be announced, let’s set up an action plan so either one of us can do the STEA and then the companion plan, Operation Do-Over (ODO) also goes into effect.

Dollars to doughnuts it’s either not to eat dairy or to work out more. If pressed, I would bet on the former.

David won Utahn Of The Year, and was given the award before he sang for the governor.

I work for the Air Force Reserves and can total relate to what you have done here. Has this been submited to any military Public Affairs office, what a great video and inspiration for all troops that have been deployed or going to be deployed and their families.
