The Gift That Keeps on Giving
David’s first solo tour has visited many a seedy venue, with unswept floors and outdated decor. Many fans, myself included, scorned this tactic. We all know David deserves much better. We know he must start somewhere, but we long for the day he takes on stages the likes of Madison Square Garden…for his OWN sold out event.
What I didn’t see at first was what a “sweet and precious gift” this really would turn out to be. When again, in my lifetime, would I ever have an opportunity to be so up close and personal to David? justDavid, the single individual who time and time again unknowingly leaves me breathless. It is a “wonderful gift” to be a part of this time in David’s life.
As with any other fan, I have my prized collection of David media ~ those early videos from American Idol. We remember holding our breath, knowing those first few seconds of every performance were terrifying for David. He was never sure what was going to come out…. and neither were we. But in a flash, the magic took over, and “the gift appeared”…David… confident, strong, smooth, lyrical, ethereal…. and we exhaled. The “gift of live television”, uploaded and downloaded to YouTube thousands of times, by thousands of fans, sharing the moments they captured, their act of generosity, their act of sharing, “their gift to us that keeps on giving.”
Here we are, a year out, and those American Idol moments, still come bearing gifts. “Imagine” … the gift that keeps on giving, or “Angels” …the gift that keeps on giving.
David doesn’t plan too far ahead, as he’s just David, and willingly admits to changing his mind frequently. He is spontaneous, full of energy, loaded with surprises and eager to please, because that TOO, is part of “his gift…that keeps on giving.”
Thank God in heaven for portable media. All my favorite David moments, my concert memories, are permanently captured in my small hand held device, ever ready and waiting. No matter where I am, no matter what I’m doing, no matter how high or how low my day is, there it is. I reach out, and with a flick of a switch, David arrives to “Save The Day”, reaching out with his heart through his voice, giving me a simple lift… David’s gift… that keeps on giving.

dawn! I know what you mean about David keeping on giving. I recorded last year’s AI shows, on my DVR and used to play them at least once a day (just David. Especially Shop Around & With You). Every time was a little thrill. Now with youtube so full with David’s tour, it’s hard to pick & choose. But so much fun!

What I posted was not from nD. We did have a brief discussion on spiritual aspects of David and Crystal(the aura they emit is like white light)children came up. I looked around and found a few attributes which seemed to apply regarding David. Crystals are messengers of healing. Although David seems a bit older than most (most are born post 9/11/01) much applies to his gift of peace and love.
Out for a dog walk and to ponder David’s many gifts he shares with the world.

dawn65, the ability David has to make one “feel” better is amazing. I was having the post partum blues after Chicago last Sunday.
Classes this week have been tough on this “old bird”! I was feeling pretty down with a grade I received on an English analysis I had done. I really thought I had nailed it, when in all actuality, the grade was a real let down. Between that and the post-partum, I had feelings of wanting to give up. OK…I’ll get to the point. Ha! Ha!
The timing of Silverfoxes letters to David couldn’t have been better for me. I decided to write to David. When I finished, I realized exactly what this young man has done for me and my life, and how much good he has brought to me. That was incentive. How could I even complain when all he has accomplished at 18 years old is mind-blowing! And here I was pouting…

It’s the stage.. something happens to david, physically, mentally and emotionally when he’s on stage..and I don’t recall ever seeing such a transformation in my entire life.

Omigosh! I am just catching up… so much to read and to watch. Dawn, your post last night had me feeling as though I was there with you. I am so glad you had that experience with David..such a treasure. HG your video is amazing and I have to go watch it again. This will be the 4th time for me this morning. It is definitely a work of love and I hope David has an opportunity to see it.

angel .. it’s just so amazing to watch his growth.. the courage to continue to put more and more himself out there. He doesn’t have a clue how much his “whole being” impacts people. That’s what makes him so endearing.
It’s a relationship that never grows old, David is always finding new ways to make us fall in love with him all over again.

the part that always particularly is a pet peeve of mine…is during his quieter moments.. when some hormonally challenged teenager is completely convinced that screaming I love you David.. is more important than what David’s trying to do.

Dawn, I’m still thinking about your experience with David this morning, A story like yours doesn’t leave one’s mind or heart.
Wonder if there’s still a chance of David recording “In This Moment” and releasing it now? Your idea of a full orchestra is even better. Like many of his songs, this one is so uplifting, and perhaps his winning moment. Would love to read your “own little review of the Sayerville Barriers.. “, that is, only if you want to share.

My avi is from David’s visit with a man back stage at Northampton. I don’t recall who took the picture, as I have read 2 accounts of the meeting. The man is sick and it was his last chance to meet David. It struck me how gentle and kind David looked bending to shake his hand and speak with him.

dawn65 That is my favorite performance of his on the AI stage. I remember jumping up and down and screaming after he finished till I was hoarse. Just glorious! I doubt he will record it though. I think I heard him say in an interview that he gave everything he had to those performances, DLTSGDOM, and ITM, and could not improve on or duplicate what took place there. (paraphrasing big time, but that was the gist of what he said) So he would leave those two performances on that stage.
Angelica.. David needs to reexamine that.. he gave all he had.. at THAT moment..his journey has changed…his moments…are bigger..his heart..is bigger…his presence… is ENORMOUS… not even DAVID…knows his potential.

This is probably way off topic, but I was watching the Biography Channel the other night, and it was about David Cassidy from Partridge Family—remember him? He was a hot item when I was in my late teens. He was recalling his “superstardom”, and how it got to the point that nice hotels didn’t even want him around, because it always brought a frenzy of crazed fans that were uncontrollable. After one huge concert, he was literally dumped at some sleezy hotel all by himself to avoid pandemonium from fans. He then wondered, “Wow, is this what being a star is all about?” He said he was so lonely.
I felt an ache for our David when I saw this. I know he has such a huge support network with family and friends, and his nature is way different than the David of my young years, but I just hope he never has to go through that feeling of being “dumped and lonely”. I love that he performs in small venues. I know it’s selfish of me, but in some ways I hope he is famous and happy without being that hugely “superfamous” individual. Our David is all about connecting with our inner souls, and I hope he never changes in that way. Well, enough rambling!
OH-one more thing. ALTNOY plays quite often on our local radio--small town, northern CA. I hear it almost as much as CRUSH.

At the airport in Phoenix, awaiting my flight to Alb, NM, where I will meet SF,Liz and Rae for the first time -- I am sooo excited. Already spoke to Dee by phone and she will pick up the others soon enough. I have never seen this part of the US before and I am admiring the panoramic mountain vire from the windows.

I have not been able to sleep! For days! I’ve had to take something after several days of sleeplessness because I can’t concentrate at work. I’ve even had acupuncture treatments. I’m function on instinct at this point.
It’s a little embarrassing this ODD of mine. My son-in-law quizzed me on David and I discovered I know way to much about him, I didn’t tell him this, but he has a beautiful beauty mark on his finger to match the one behind his ear (left). Am I crazy? I didn’t even get into what his voice does for me…to me. I think I’ve mentioned I was considering therapy. So when you mention gushing, I gush right along. Ok… I think I’ll shut up now.
I may need you guys after Tuesday.

Dawn65, all I want is to hear a medley of either all his AI songs or Star search songs. Of course we want him to be out of AI shadow but I think with his confidence now possibly even higher than when he sang Shop around a medley of Stand by me/we can work it out/with you/shop around would be SOMETHING. Another one is an a cappella of longer ( wasn’t there an arrangement of this before but was rejected). Another medley in my wish list , is him in the piano would be crazy/another day in paradise/angels. Another wish list of mine is a beatles medley of imagine/long and winding road/yesterday/hey jude/here there and everywhere (my favourite).
HG watched your video a dozen time already. Now you inspired me to do one too. I can start with my kids videos and pictures and then David. Any suggestion on how to do it. Another thing I can learn to do.

My youngest son, still slow to come around, my son in law, STILL teases me.. nightly, but when I played him Como La Flor.. well then he changed his tune.. he admitted that David can really sing. (finally).
After my “experience” .. I was so uncomfortable, I tried to shut David out of my life. I was miserable.

By the way Imagine (1 and 2), DLTSGDOM, ITM,WYB,LMT and TOM are my favourites . David’s performance on that day for each of this song was perfect for me. Of course it would be lovely to hear them in their full version either live or studio (like Imagine in Ford and Jingle jam) but the experience/feeling was different not like the first time…. I cannot explain…
However, Angels is different. Every time he sings it, a cappela version or full concert version (AI or his present tour) each performance gave me a different feeling, a different response possible because his interpretation is also different depending on his audience reaction…..

Desperate and Your Eyes Don’t Lie are my top favorites from David’s CD! And, I’m so glad he is including YEDL once more on his tour. To me, it certainly has an Otis Redding feel.

emmiegirl -- I LOVE that song! Interesting controversy over at FOD today that I stumbled upon…the girl who requested YEDL in San Antonio posted her story there. She was so excited David and the band agreed to take the request and perform the song, David said it was “kind of a Texas song”. Anyway this part of her story caught my attention:

Someone in the comments over there brought this up and it was so weird, the conversation was stopped by those who feared someone might be “lurking” and told people to be “careful of what they said”. What the heck? I remember in a chat once Jeff had said YEDL “wasn’t one of his picks” for the album. No surprise then if he was behind it being taken off the set list, and wouldn’t want it performed. I do think David has performed more spontaneously (YEDL, Selena) since Jeff has been on break.
DAWN, I loved your post. David’s gifts DO just keep on giving, and in the most mysterious and exponentially multi-layered ways. I mean, it’s like, fractal, man. About the small venue tour, I’ve been thrilled at the notion of a mid-small venue tour because this sort of intimacy is what reveals/builds legends. I just can’t help feeling, and very, very strongly, that it was all supposed to be this way.

The thing is, David shines in spontaneous moments, part of what makes him so electric! He can pull off literally anything. And even if it wouldn’t be perfect, it is still better than what 99% of the entertainers out there could do.

Vee60 (and others here), thanks for driving up the number of views on my video! I use Windows Media Maker, which is pretty easy to learn (as is imovie). It just requires importing pictures, audio, and video files, and arranging them in a timeline and storyboard. It takes a while to get the hang of it. Would love to see what video you come up with!

Did you all see this video? I did not see comments on this, thus asking. This video is precious. It tells you when the request for something Spanish came about. David was Sooo adorable and good sport. Good quality too. Marlie, I think it will be great to include this in the tour reflection with the other 2 Selena videos.

haha… somebody (who was that… shroom? dawn?) was saying they were hearing a little of the otis reddiing in yedl (finally realized the whistle and the tempo point straight to “Dock of the Bay”)… and it made me also realize that the “…I needed help…” part (LOVE that little knee-buckling yedl moment) vaguely reminds me (you’ll prolly think I’m crazy here) of the part in Love Potion No. 9 “… I held my nose, I closed my eye, I took a drink.”
Would Love Potion No. 9 not be unbelievably fun and amazing if David took it on and had his way with it? lol (I’m making myself dizzy and sick thinking about that… lol) Unfortunately there’s not much chance he’ll choose to cover that one, I don’t believe.
I think that it is time to pull yourselves together and pre-pare…because you porbably will need your strength after we hear from SF…I am not sure what will happen but you may need both feet on the ground, something to tranquil yourself and something to keep you from pacing and wanting to be there at the rest of the concerts with the jDers…But you must get a good night’s sleep to deal with the excitement and the rest of life that hangs on needing your constant attention…

By the way have you met David’s girlfriend?? He meets up with her on stage on concert night and the romance is growing stronger…and we were there from the very first date…You can’t have a girlfriend for real when you have such a deep devotion to the people you hang out with and loving every minute of it……
Sandy, these tour vids…guh… I have moments when I literally do feel I’m witessing very intimate, passionate scenes. It’s so PERSONAL, isn’t it? Blows me away. These small venues are… really serious archu_alchemy. Powerful stuff.

Observe if you dare the hand on the hip and the salsa hip action when the very thought of singing Spanish enters his head. And don’t tell me that’s a feminine move. He is too masculine for his own good, I swear, if he keeps this up he will push us all into the fires of hades. Oh my gosh. The thought of him performing Spanish songs to some Latin dance moves is forbidden territory. David is the sexiest man alive in progress.

Hey all you lovely jD’ers!
So I’ve been watching the a capella parts of the My Hands tour videos. It’s kind of amazing to watch. You see how his artistry is evolving with each performance. He’s testing out different variations, seeing how if they work and how they work together. Like what he did with Imagine. How he changed up the finale Imagine and how that affected his Ford performance with the line “the only one.” It’s really amazing to see this documented on tour. It shows not only his natural talent but the fearlessness he has in his craft.
It’s like his original AI Imagine performance. It did not come by change but through years of work and craft. I think his vocal coach said somewhere that David had “lived” with Imagine for a long time and that’s how that version came to be. Just random thoughts…
Oh and by the way when he sings “como me duele” (how it hurts me) in the Selena song and kind of pumps his hand to express the emotion of pain….aghhh it kills me!!!!

I haven’t read any posts yet so I don’t know if SF called from Sunshine Theater or not, but davidfanLIZ called me twice tonight since I’ve been home, and thought I’d share with you guys. The first time she called, the line went dead within seconds but I heard loud screeeeeaaammmms!!! I tried calling her back but she didn’t pick up. Then 5 minutes later, the phone rings again and this time I heard David sing Barriers!!! It sounded underwatery here and there but it was great!!! It was sooo exciting! More screams and when the song was over, the phone died again or maybe she hung up. Now I’m left hungering for more! Goshhhh! No one is doing cellcast tonight. I hope she calls again.

Djafan, they’re all great, but I would recommend “Barriers” and “Zero Gravity.” from Duluth. I know we can talk endlessly about David’s “inner” beauty, but for one night, a least, David’s physical appearance was simply too magnificent to ignore. He always looks great, but I had to harken back to Elvis’ TV special in ’68 to remember a performer who had that much sex appeal on stage. For a shy, modest guy from Utah, David let it all hang out that night. Ok. I’ll shut up now.

During the song HALO I was brought to TEARS by the song and the visuals of David thinking about how much he brings LIGHT TO EVERYONE. I wish I knew. The David off stage is no problem for me. But the person he becomes on stage is another matter entirely. He becomes so much older and mature and yes, sexy. I may be old, but I’m not dead. I think that just as David appeals to all ages, he also touches all the ages within me. My middle age self loves him like a mother, my inner child loves him as a brother, my 18 year old, well, she needs her butt kicked. The thing is, all these people still exist in me and there is no part of me he does not touch. He made a connection with my soul in a powerful way. So in a way, my love for him touches on the sacred, but when you love someone that much, the profane tends to want to get involved too. I’m working on that, BUT LATELY HE IS NOT HELPING. I hope this answers your question to me, but really, when it comes right down to it, I am at a loss to explain his effect on me. After a year, I am still trying to process it.

That is so true. I worry for his health (mom), I admire his inner strength (little sister), I think he is about as sexy a young man as has come along in ages (my 18-year-old self). That last one is going to get herself in trouble watching those Duluth videos. See, I’m serious one moment, and falling into sin and hilarity the next. He makes me giddy with emotion.

I have another question:
Does anyone know the set ORDER for the shows. I went to Sayreville, but can’t piece together the order entirely. Is he singing the same order at all the shows? I found the set from Virginia, but I thought I heard that he switched it up pretty early in the tour.
I just like to watch the videos sort of in order of how the night went. I feel like it flows better, if that makes any sense!

Bluebarsa, The song is tailor made for David, and the audience would need time to collect themselves if David ever sang it in concert.
I was always surprised that Lenny Welch was pretty much a “one hit wonder” with this song. It was a huge hit, and he was a great singer. One thing for sure, David will not be a “one hit wonder”. He could release a box set of his “classics” already.

When I talk to others about David, I try to not so much anymore because of the look on their faces, I get way to animated when I talk about him. I don’t understand how they don’t see or hear what I do… like David says, I’m not making any sense.

I’m off to Boise next weekend & I can hardly think of anything else. I’m arriving Friday night (late) for Saturday’s show. I’ll have all morning and afternoon on Saturday to just be by myself with NO DISTRACTIONS! I am so looking forward to that time before the show.
I’ll bring my laptop. Just have to figure out how to connect to the hotel internet. They say they have “free internet” but I’ve never done that before.
Anyone know how to connect to the internet from another location? I have wireless internet in my house, so my laptop has a wireless adapter card that sticks out of the side. (I’m so technical here, I know!)
I would sure appreciate the help if anyone knows. I’m hoping the hotel will be able to help me out, but I’d feel better if I knew ahead of time. Perhaps I need to bring some type of wire with me in case they don’t have “wireless”?

Rapture -- a lot of hotels have a connection in the rooms. You plug it in like you would to a phone line. So I’d take my cord that came with the laptop. The one you would plug into a phone jack for dialup connections. Usually located near the desk or table in the room. Some hotels have a business center area also for traveling businessmen. Usually off the lobby. That is more likely to have wireless. I’d email the hotel and find out for sure.

I think David’s stage presence and comfort level may appear to be growing faster than his off-stage self—but I don’t think they’re actually all that far apart and I think they will merge relatively quickly if they haven’t already and will continue to move forward… quite nicely.
I doubt he’ll ever overtly or deliberately try to be sexy. And, hey, why WOULD he? ABSOLUTELY NO NEED. lol. (Trying would mess everything up anyway.) That’s one of the sexiest things about him. His beauty, his beautiful spirit and personality, and the sheer force of his passionate, knee-buckling musical know-how and delivery are all the sexy he will evah need. Far, FAAAAAAR more powerful than anything contrived or conscious. Will he ever actually realize how smexy he IS without trying, and how powerful that is? I find it hard to imagine he’d ever own up to that, or deliberately identify with it, but I think he’s starting to get a clue about his, um, natural power. lol. Poor baby. Oh the stuff he has to put up with. Has to live wif hiz own impossibly smexy self. Good thing he’s grounded. Phew!

I was wandering around the mall today and stopped into FYE, the local store that sells CDs, etc. I bought two more copies of David’s CD because my original copy is all played out! It no longer plays on my stereo nor in my car! Anyway, two more to add towards going platinum.

I think that David has spent much of his life up to this point developing the musical side of himself and in that area, he is advanced beyond his years and those of his peers. Other areas of development have been allowed to unfold at a slower pace. The hard-working David, the artistic genius, has benefited from retaining his playful child persona. I believe in time the off stage David will become one with the on stage David. He is already making great strides in that direction as witnessed in his comfort in interviews. He himself has said that he is still immature in some ways, and that awareness will impel him toward growth. Still, I doubt that David will ever lose all of the best parts of his child-like sweetness and trusting nature. He is a complex man and will always be something of an enigma.

First time I just sat back and listened to this very young David singing “Contigo En La Distancia” I really DID have to peel myself off the floor. GUH! Unbelievable delivery. Rapture: The cord you need is NOT the same as the one for dial-up. You need an ethernet connector for your laptop, which looks like a phone jack, but has a slightly larger connector. MOST hotels have one at the front desk you can use. It will be easier for you if you plug in because your laptop will automatically hook to that internet connection. If you use the wireless, you can get the connection (if the signal is strong enough), but it may ask you a few questions like, “Do you want to connect to this network all the time” or “Give this network a location, home, work, public”.

Okay.. Several months ago I bought David a gift. Even before the tour was announced.
Initially I thought I’d send it to Azoff. But held off.. tour announced.. tickets scored.
Still …how in heck was I gonna get it to him ?
He had a meet and greet (yes..the one happy went to) … but prior to that I had contacted the station manager at WPST to let him know my plite.
The promotions director contacted me at work, and told me he’d be glad to bring it to David at the meet and greet.
I had to drive 2 hours to drop it off..
I don’t know if he EVER got it.

Don’t even get me started on David singing Contiga En La Distancia. For months I had to play that every single day to keep breathing. The passion, the loving way he caresses each soft consonant and delivers those gorgeous runs that last forever…guhhhh. And the kid was only like 10 or so? If he EVER produces a Spanish album, I will go insane. The fact that I can not understand a word of Spanish only makes it more powerful. It’s like appreciating a work of abstract art; the lyrics don’t distract from the incredible artistry of his vocals. It’s like listening to a beautifully played instrument. If Contiga En La Distancia from David, the child, kept me breathing for awhile every day, a whole album from the grown, smexy David will surely take my breath away.
dawn65 -- just saw it! Wow,I love how even during a performance he focuses on someone and has a dialogue with them. He touches people on so many levels in so many ways. Truly amazing! You is a very lucky girl!

I’ve thought about this many times too. I don’t think it is a stage persona, but a very real, very strong part of who he is. I think he needs the other for balance; it’s kind of imperative. To quote beebee, “Has to live wif hiz own impossibly smexy self.”
That can’t be easy. Even as a boy and young teen he had the looks and incredible charisma. Can you imagine the reactions he would get now if he carried even a small portion of that “sexy” with him off stage? That would be a challenge for anyone, let alone someone with the humility of David, and at his age.
I do think as he gets older they will meld to some degree, mostly because of
maturation and the progression into full manhood; but I do agree with Angelica about believing he will retain his light and the parts about him that make him so very special.
Well since I’m sharing moments.. this is barriers..when I get in my car and drive off… and Mike thought it was pretty funny. A little embarrassing NOW..but not THEN.. I didn’t care.. I was having SO much fun. Probably the most fun I’ve had in over 20 years. Sayerville I was screaming fan girl.. Clarence.. I was rockin groupie
If you watch Mike at 1:43 and at 1:47 he bring me to the attention of Alex.
We have “several” pictures of Mike looking directly into my camera.. I don’t know if it’s because we met him before the show and he remembered us…or just liked the energy.
Keeley had LOTS of moments that night. TOO many to recall. But it started in line, went from Lesley Roy… David …straight through to Alex, Mike…even Kendra.

Dawn 65 ~ I was so surprised & disappointed when I found out the venue David is going to play at here in Cali but, like you said it is more than likely the last time I will ever see him in a small setting. So, now I’m really glad he’s at the Glass House & so excited I can hardly sleep.
Since I’m not an 18 year old in real time, the mosh pit seems like a pretty brutal choice but to see him up close like that would be too much, just too much! I’m gonna see how it goes.

It would make so much more sense if it is The Alchemist. Here is what Wikipedia says about the book — I am not surprised the book inspired David.
