Where Thrilling Becomes Pleasant
I don’t really know how it’s possible to take the adoration, the frenzy, the sheer manic passion that accompanies a David Archuleta concert and turn it into a tepid and lifeless snooze of a video, but gosh dang-it if Jive didn’t figure out a way to do just that.
Look, I can process the idea that Jive won’t do anything imaginative or interesting for David, I’ve accepted the fact that they want their payday and they’re gonna get it in the most efficient and economical way possible, but do they have to work against him? I mean, you have to really try to make footage of an Archuleta concert seem as contrived and soporific as this video does (I almost used the word colorless, until I realized that they meant to do that… talk about an unfortunate metaphor).
When this was first leaked by an Asia-based blog site, I thought at first — hoped, in fact — that it was a fan video. And certainly not one of the better ones. But I had my doubts even then. No fan, no matter how technically challenged, could make David seem so… milquetoast. The irony, of course, is that David is anything but milquetoast in concert.
This video conveys nothing of the David Archuleta we’ve seen in concert over the course of this year, nothing of the diversity of his audience, and — inexplicably — nothing of the real and sometimes frightening delirium to which many of his young fans often succumb. No, this is Safety David. A nice boy, a lovely singer, and evidently a performer of no real consequence.
This is the danger when you give the responsibility of an artists’ image to production people who don’t understand the artist or their work. They bring their preconceptions, misapprehensions, and cynicism into the edit room and turn out a product that reflects precisely the narrow-minded assumptions they had going in.
But I remain content! This too shall pass. And one day, David will meet producers and production people who get him… Who will not only capture the magic he creates in a theater, but who are able to retain and even augment that magic with their own skills and creativity such that the music and video that emerge from David 2.5 or 3.1 will be so much more resonant of David himself. All artists are challenged in their ability to find production people who get it. That’s why when artists finally do, they cling to them for dear life.

Ouch, you’re right Rascal, this is milquetoast David. Everything seems cleaned up and a bit sanitized in this video. Where is the crazy, raw passion that David exhibits during his live performance?
And where the heck are the guy fans and those over the age of 25? The faces in this video don’t in any way reflect the faces I saw at the tour shows I attended. As I said earlier, I’m offended that David’s fans are portrayed so uniformly young and female. It just ain’t so!
But Rascal is content. What???? No gnashing of teeth, no bitter angst? Who are you, and what have you done with our Rascal? LOL! So, we have to put up with Safety David, but at least we can enjoy Mellow Rascal haha!

Thank you for expressing what my own concerns have been. “Safety David.” But safe for whom exactly since it’s obvious those of us who have been on the David Train know who he is and also know there’s nothing remotely “safe” about the guy when he digs deep and slays us?
That’s why I remain cautiously optimistic about tonight’s performance because, between Jive and AI, David must work with people who simply don’t get him. It might make for a rather reserved and “leashed” performance that will capture nothing of the magic he’s capable of displaying.
Rascal, you write what I have been thinking since I saw this video a couple of days ago, and like you I hoped it was created by a fan. I viewed it quite a few times because I was hoping I would see more of the phenomenal energy and developing artistry that I saw at HOB.
I mean, I was at the House of Blues! I have seen TMH at least 7 times live. It is one of my favorite youTube solo tour videos. The energy bouncing off the rafters and all around the HOB was like a barrage of high energy superballs, that ricocheted even faster and faster with every hit.
And some of the fan shots in that video with the somber faces are simply off putting. No one in that venue was somber during any of the songs, not even the bartenders--dazed, smiling, in a stupor, yes, absolutely, somber, no.
However, the ending where they revert to the live performance is stunning and David has a moment where he is suspended and it is obvious he has emptied all that he is into that performance; now, that was glorious.
Maybe the tweens/teens will love this synthesized version and I am just too old anymore to get what it is to be a teen/tween.
I can’t imagine the editing…they left most of the good stuff of the HOB performance on the floor.
And so, I do love the video because it is David’s and, as always, A++ for him, I’ll support it. And, I will also dance in the streets and shout to the heavens when David’s artistry is captured fully on video.
I was thinking it was released so that it could be viewed/purchased given David’s AI performance tonight…ah, marketing and business are frequently at cross-purposes with artistry.
I was surprised by the fact that the CD track was used as most of the audio. ronaldsf overlayed this with the AOL Sessions version and THAT was much better.
I’m okay with this video, even though I agree they didn’t capture the frenzy of the audience or even some of David’s best moments of rockin’ the House (or Blues). They don’t yet get “organic David”. But I think this is a step up from the ALTNOY video -- not in production quality, because that was a lovely video in that regard. But it does show us the “real” David, albeit toned down.
We see the hunkerdown and some jumping even if it is not enough to get the sense of energy that David releases on stage. I think it is a move in the right direction. They are beginning to see something, they just haven’t quite put their finger on it like his fans have.
Maybe there is a presentation concept of this video that we are missing…it is obvious that no matter how correct you are in the analysis of this…we could be missing something. It is apparent by the size of the audience and the looks on their faces that they are not there because of the milk and cookies presentation. I know that the zing is not showing and many of you will agree with rascal but maybe there is something more to realize…just a glimmer of hope for that. Please don’t throw tomatoes at me just yet…
SB: No tomatoes. As I said, I’m okay with this video. Only people who have been to his concerts will notice that it is toned down. The size of the audience is obvious and a good thing. The chanting of “David, David…” is a good thing. But all in all, it starts to show David as we know him, not as the boy on the beach with a girl in a situation that is purely fictional.
SB: I think we are all saying the same thing, that we all are “ok” with the video; we are just looking at it from different perspectives. A 360 degree perspective gives us the reassurance, overall, that everything is good, going in the right direction, even with the “warts.”
Marlie -- I like the points you make regarding the beginning of “organic.” I must ponder that some more! Thanks.
Rascal- “pleasant.” Sort of like Ohio. Thank you for writing what I was thinking. I will add that I am not content with this video. If a rascal can be mellow, then happy can be cranky…David will grow in popularity in large part because of his live performance charisma and ability. His people are supposed to be promoting his strengths and creating an image, not going through the motions. Of course, to them they are creating an image…reminds me of the BAB song, which I know…many people liked, so for many, that is a good thing… but not to me. (happy you are such a snob.)
Another lost opportunity. There is no sense of David the passionate artist in this video, except as Kizzi pointed out, at the very end where we see “live David.” You Tube for sure…the You Tube videos are terrific because they are filmed by people in love with David. The camera never leaves him, and it certainly does not cut away as he is beginning to soar.
The editing in this video is inexplicable. Every time there is a familiar glimpse of him moving on stage with his natural emotion they cut away, the longer images are obviously contrived. His signature moves, the ones that certain fans spend hours replaying, are edited to 1-2 seconds…. but they were sure to include plenty of goofy smiles and friendly fans. Oh well, off to play kickball and cuddle my bear…
(I do like the shirt, loosened tie, and rolled up sleeves though.)
The video begins “David David” and nary an earth-shattering scream (which we only get a glimpse of or a soundbite of at the end). The failure to even capture, not just the diversity, but the pathos of his fans, is what eventually makes this video so… hate to say the word… GENERIC.
Our David deserves better and has gotten better treatment from those who love him (this certainly doesn’t include his label).

Are they trying to tone it down for their tweens and early teens? I think it is safe to assume that the majority of these young fans will never get a chance to see him live in concert, but they will go to his official website and youtube channel and see “safe David.” What they see is cute and adorable, and safe, and go buy albums, itunes, posters, t-shirts etc.
The ALTNOY video never caught on as much as the Crush, and I know a big part of that is the song hasn’t been nearly as successful, but have wondered if the, what David refers to as “performance parts” of that video are too much, too intense for the young ones. (My favorite parts, personally)
I don’t know, just thinking out loud here. They are going where no one has ever gone before when it comes to marketing him.

I know that there are better videos of David out there. The newest outstanding movie “Twilight” has the best trailer videos done by fans and they are commended for them.
I have a huge curiosity most of the time (about things worthwhile of course and of things not understood) so I am trying to figure out in my mind just what the concept is in doing the video as they did.
Before I am completely annoyed at Jive myself, I will give it a few more seconds of thought…

I must be the only one here who actually liked it. I really do. I think it’s the natural progression from fake relationship videos, where we see beach and guitar hero shots, to David on stage. Where he belongs.
The less generic, more intense videos will come.
I did read a comment on snarky’s from a younger girl that was pretty telling. She loved this video because it showed *sweet* David. She was a bit scared of *Hot* David. I think she was around sixteen.

I can say, from the vantage point of being in that Chicago audience, that there were TONS of guys (both single straight and gay couples and women/guy couples) of ALL ages there. In fact, from where Joner and I were sitting, most people around us were our age and slightly younger. And the production (sound) of that concert was incredible. They should have just played the live performance itself.
Rascal, I agree with every word you said about this video. But do we really expect more from Jive at this point? Its targeted audience is clearly the tween/teen set, and therefore it had to be sanitized and stripped of any passion and pathos that could frighten his young fans. The video’s portrayal of David and his fans is pretty much in line with Jive’s understanding of David’s appeal. Last year, they put him on American Music Award Leno, Ellen, etc, presumably to test his appeal in a grown-up market. Since then, there was a change of strategy, and he is now strictly being marketed to the tween/teen set (I-Carly, HM, Kids’ Choice Award, BAB, Demi etc.) It looks like at one point Jive decided it was not able to successfully market him to the over-15 set at this juncture in his career. I found it incredible that hundreds of thousands of us “get” him – the media people in Asia included – yet there is not one in his Jive team that “gets” him the way we do? And these people are the professionals? I guess it’s the profession of money they are in. (The only ray of hope is this tour with McFly – it’s a happy anomaly of Jive’s current marketing strategy)
Having said that, I still love the video. I am over-delighted with the 10 percent of the magic of David that is captured in the video! I patiently wait for the other 90 percent.

It just didn’t capture the HOB experience, the live experience very well. It was synthesized into something different.

If I can find happiness watching a new video of him, I think I’ll just grab onto it and keep it! He is kind of keeping me sane lately.
p.s. I may have a different take on this as I haven’t had the experience of seeing him live.
I like it too, anything David is beautiful. It just is.
I think I’m in the minority again because I mostly like the video. I agree they should’ve given us more of David’s moves and less ‘waving to fans’ -- I think I’m mean but I want to cry when he waves in the middle of a song, so corny!
Apart from that I love the song, the black and white treatment, the fan takes and I even like that they used the cd track -- sorry, don’t like how David goes for the falsetto in the AOL sessions. The sound in the cd is more rounded and full although the sessions version really is edgier and rockier. They should probably remix the song before releasing it to iTunes. All things considered, it definitely gives me hope for the next video. They’re learning. Producers will always lag behind hardcore fans like us when it comes to getting the artist.
Sorry to go off topic but I was watching a video at FOD for an Earth Day project by an Archie with ‘Save the Day’. Does anyone else think David should sing it in the Uk? Sounds so British and ColdPlayish!
Why would they have David lip sing to a studio recording during a video of a live performance? To get a version where you could hear him better over the screams? Because when he first comes out to do TMH, the screams are massive and deafening, and continue through the entire song. But isn’t that the whole point of a live performance recording, to capture the feel of the performance and the crowd reaction? I think the motivation was to get a clear recording of the tune, and, yes, make it palatable to many youngsters and oldsters who only like to see David smiling sweetly.
David and his intensity during a live performance is an unstoppable force and the day will come when it will have to be reckoned with.
I’m no expert..but this is what I posted on the previous thread…

The Solo Tour was, IMO, geared to David’s older..18 & over fans. He was able to LET GO as the tour progressed. If younger fans found it too intense, then IMO, David did his job.
This next tour, IMO and everyone else’s, is geared to the tweens/teens..so releasing this video as is, is a very good marketing strategy for this Demi/David tour. There has been some discussion about why release the video now…well the tickets go on sale this week, so why not now. It does show a “safer David”. Kids who want to see David in concert can show their parents the video, parents will allow their young kids to go to the concert, just based on what they see on the video. I may be way off base here and it’s JMO.
I love the scenes of David on stage. He’s beautiful! But I thought there were too many scenes of the fans..well edited scenes of fans, I might add. All in all, it’s a very good “advertisement” for David and the upcoming summer tour with Demi..Also, David had to have approved of the video before it was leaked and released.
We older fans have to be realistic..JIVE simply does not care what we, his older fans think or want. All we can do is wait.
Now I’ll shut up and keep on waiting.
Rascal, I so agreed with you. I was also hoping that it was a fan video. To me, this is more like a documentary than a music video showcasing the artist’s beauty: be it the voice, or the look, or the moves

Other than the lack of creativity and thought put into it, there was just NOT enough David in this video. I have not timed it, but I bet you it is probably less than 50% on David, and to me, it is like, what dah? Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing the fans’ reactions, but not at the expense of seeing less of David!
Well, if this video is going to sell well, gain him fans, I guess it is ok. But again, why not MORE David there? Maybe he would even sell more downloads, and gain more fans?

so, we are in LA today and playing American Idol tonight……it’s very exciting.
The weather is perfect….
Kind of a nice start to our UK tour, that we leave for tomorrow.
Didn’t have much of a break in between tours, as I went right back to work on some records, but it was great to be home to play with my family for a bit…..it’s really tough,being away from them.
The whole band is very much looking forward to Rawking out with McFly in the UK, then with David Cooke in Manila.
David and I were able to start writing stuff for the new record this week, and I have to say….it’s nice to get back at that again.

I think I already said I had a petpeeve with the video a few threads ago.. and in particular, I didn’t voice anything, but it was about the 12-14 age range of all the fans they pictured.
no matter what.. we are going to have to bite the bullet on this one.
they are hellbent on shoving this down our throat..and repeatedly pushing that demographic.
Excited that Mike and David have started working on some new material.. they make an unbeatable team.

There are many facets to a diamond.
I like all of David’s videos, as they complement the tone and texture of the particular song.
The TMH video is no exception, as the song is all about David’s connecting to the fans and in essence his reason for being -- it’s a tribute song that’s both incorporate and incarnate. Incorporate in the sense that David invites the audience to be an essential part of the music -- a shared experience. Incarnate in the sense that the shared experience is ultimately one of friends, not fans, and that intimacy invariably creates an energy that merges and propels both performer and listener into a spiritual realm. The embodiment of hope and love.
The nitpicking and Jive-talking seems to be wasted energy…I prefer to use my energy to turn the David diamond and experience as many facets as possible -- life is short. David will be independent soon enough…in the meantime he’s schooling all of us -- including Jive (they, like us, will be better for having known him).

Bigsky #38 Absolutely no criticism of David from me, either. Everything you say about his performances is true….but isn’t quite shown in the video. David’s connection with the audience isn’t “sweet”. I’ve been there. It is strong and joyful and jumping and intensity and holy moly jump out of your skin exciting. It’s Don’t-Let-Go-David and Works-For-Me David and Zero-Gravity David.

Sorry for the confusion.
When I wrote, “nitpicking and Jive-talking seems to be wasted energy”, I am referring to the criticisms directed to Jive with respect to marketing/image-making of David. I suppose for some it makes for the equivalent of a fun parlor game.
Speaking only for myself, I prefer to expend some portion of my limited free time on David’s artistic progression. I am grateful for all the links and stories that you and many other TDC family-members provide, since they save people, such as myself, a tremendous amount of time and effort -- thank you for that.
I could not care less about Jive/marketing or video production twists and turns -- all outside of the “spiritual realm” where David resides artistically and, from my limited observations, personally as well.
When all is said and done, David in his unique and endearing way always rises above the fray. All that is important to me is that David has a consuming desire to appeal to all who love music, genuinely appreciates his fanfriends, has already established a sufficient fanfriend base that virtually assures a lifelong pursuit of his passion for music, albeit independent of a record label, and our devotion to be alongside him in his pursuit -- however we choose to express ourselves (all good).
Jive can only hurt themselves…in fact, I sense that their days of affiliation are numbered.

For what it’s worth, I went on record that TMH video was “unprofessional” in it’s look and style. Grainy, out of focus—you get the point.

Tonight when you return to AI, I hope you will reflect on how far you have come and how much you have grown since leaving that stage. You were amazing then, but now…you are a breath-taking, chill-inducing phenomenon. I hope you walk out on that stage believing this. I hope that with each step you take, that belief grows into a perfect knowledge. I hope when you perform, you remember all the fans who love you unconditionally, there, and in homes all over the world. So don’t sweat it, don’t think about it, just lay it all down on that stage and walk away. There is nothing to win and nothing to lose anymore. I hope you know how proud we are of you.
And David…I hope you dance.

oh SF .. I didn’t go to the Ohio M&G because of the drive. This could be 5 minutes from me. My chances of meeting him are getting slimmer and slimmer by the moment.

This time I do so strongly agree and more -- I think there are better photos of him, his fans, his moves -- posted all over the internet. I am flabbergasted how “on the cheap” this video is done and perplexed by the commotion surrounding the scheduling and date changes of this song/video release.

On a personal level.. meaning MY opportunity to meet David?
Thrilled to death, prepared to sell organs if need be.
On a marketing level?
Hmmm…. I guess it’s all relative. We knew David would in time become more and more removed from the crowds, he has to compromise somewhere. It’s the price of fame…and let’s face it.. his fame is growing at an alarming rate.
On David’s level? I don’t know if he’d approve of interacting with fans because of money/marketing, and I’m sure he’d much rather do that sort of thing for charity.
This is complex. And my mind is stumbling for anything reasonably coherent today.. but it IS a good thing to discuss..and think about.
Thank you for making me try to THINK.. but I’m looking forward to some of the responses.
(that is of course if it’s okay with our leader .. hahahahaha)

I am so glad for this post. I was very disappointed with the video and I am still hoping that its a rough draft and not the final product. The pace is slow & plodding, the edits do not flow with the music. I’m sorry, but it is sloppy.

I watched the video because I’d watch anthing with David in it, but it never occurred to me that it might be “professional”. the chopiness drove me nuts and having been at 2 concerts I knew they missed the big picture totally. I’d rather watch the Columbus Zero G video a thousand times before this hackneyed effort. Moving on.. I’ve been on pins and needles for 2 days waiting for AI tonite. I’m hoping he’s going on live and not for the dress rehearsal audience. I’m SO excited for the band because this is likely the largest audience they will ever play for. Dance Alex dance! Get David going and let him show America what he’s becoming. Geez I cannot wait.
rascal -But I remain content! This too shall pass. And one day, David will meet producers and production people who get him… Who will not only capture the magic he creates in a theater, but who are able to retain and even augment that magic with their own skills and creativity such that the music and video that emerge from David 2.5 or 3.1 will be so much more resonant of David himself. All artists are challenged in their ability to find production people who get it. That’s why when artists finally do, they cling to them for dear life.

Boy, the whole VIP concept is something new isn’t it? or have I been living under a rock?
I’ve heard that some of the big name concerts (i.e. Kelly Clarkson/Jay Z) have had trouble selling out, more than likely because of the economy.
I think this explains the gravatation towards state fairs and smaller, less expensive venues that are more affordable.
I’m wondering if this whole VIP thing isn’t a way to recoup the revenue that is being lost by not doing the larger venues.

Anyway, I enjoyed the video not because it was done well, but because any chance to see David on stage is a pleasure. I didn’t like the gaggle of screaming prepubescent girls, as it seemed that they left out the 20, 30, and aboves. That is the puzzling thing, why not show his widespread appeal? Well I have an answer for that, but I will save it for when I have time to elaborate.
I didn’t like that they seem to not play up David’s strengths. But I am not hatin’ on it. Videos are so much crap these days anyway. This isn’t not where near as good, or as bad as it could be.

irrespective of one’s thoughts about the quality of the tmh video, i am moved to express what lies in my heart of hearts for and about david, before he comes full circle on the idol stage this evening….
i’m just a big old soggy mess of goo…. and trust me -- i have a rep in real life and in my professional life as being cool as a cucumber, and tough as nails, hahahahah….
i am so, so proud and happy to be ”in this moment” with the rest of the david loving fans, all over the world…. i was one of those cold, cynical hearts that this young man has changed, and this heart has been reawakened to see things in a new and brighter light, and i am forever grateful for the night divine providence stepped in and led me to top 24 night on idol…. my life hasn’t been the same since, and i wouldn’t have it any other way..
david has helped me rediscover and has helped me find my way back to the carefree, idealistic, hopeful and fun loving person i was, before life and the world began chipping away at all the simple, idealistic joys, hopes and dreams that once ruled and fueled my life… i’ve rediscovered a lot of the simple pleasures and joys in life again, through the power of david’s music, and the tearing down of a lot of barriers i had imposed to keep that cold, cruel, cynical world at bay…..
i can’t say thank you to him enough for being the conduit, and the channel that helped bring a lot of the sunlight and just pure, unadulterated joy back into my life. thank you david.

As bigsky already said upthread, I hope David can now officially sever his ties with that show. Considering he already bent over backwards to cancel shows and do all this tonight when he has to fly out tomorrow AND perform the same day he arrives in the UK, I think they could have shown more pride in his accomplishments.

Watching it live I thought he sounded nervous but watching it back again I think it was a doubling effect of my nervousness and his. I was ALWAYS so nervous for him on that g-d show. I think he did great. I don’t love that song, but he absolutely owned that stage — I was thrilled that some of the live cutting caught a couple of fierce Archumoves--that’s certainly something the general AI audience will have been surprised by. And let’s also just mention this: Who would have ever predicted that after doing a Ryan Seacrest onstage chat, that the rejoinder to David would be, “well said” --? I mean come on! There are a lot of people out there that are still gonna be surprised that David can form complete sentences!

funny how relaxed he was doing the SLC tour but this had him nervous. there’s a first time for everything. I bet anyone it won’t happen again. I’ll take the nerves just to see that amazing joy on his face when he came downstage. What a killer schedule he’s facing now.. all the more to worry about. It’s our job. This will have to hold me til Del Mar. Oh and Kizzi’s expected report from the UK. Go on David.. go conquor another continent.
I loved him then, loved him yesterday, today and will love him tomorrow and the rest of my life..this life that HE brought back to life doing what he did tonight as I watched him on this same TV last year and again tonight…I’m sorry! It just brought back so many memories..the anticipation, the pain and tears I shed when Simon gave harsh criticism and the look on David’s face of, I don’t know…sadness cuz he wanted so badly to please.

I just wish we could have seen a tiny bit of the judges’ reactions. When I rewatched it it didn’t seem like he was that nervous, either. Maybe it was ME being nervous!
The only artist I can think of offhand that might be considered ‘perfect’ when performing live is “The Eagles”. Of course, they’ve been around for a few years. Um, I mean a few decades. Still, I think my idea of a truly live performance isn’t necessarily to see ‘perfection’ but to see ‘performance’. And in that respect, our David delivered -- BIG time! Yeah, he seemed a bit nervous, but who wouldn’t be? But he hit the big notes right on cue. Oh, and I did notice that even Simon was applauding David’s performance. And the words of encouragement he gave to the Alison and Anoop just goes to prove (as if we needed any further proof) what a truly class act David is.

Very cute and exciting to see him give career advice. You could tell that he was delighted to be giving advice to them. He knows exactly how they feel.

David accomplished what he was there to do, namely, premier his new single in front of 30 million viewers. There is always an awkwardness whenever any AI alum comes back to the show because they all want to distance themselves from it. David seemed so “over” American Idol and there was a very rushed feel to his appearance.
David gave the show a much needed sense of grace and humanity last year, which is glaringly absent this year. Hopefully, he will never have to be subjected to the tackiness and idiocy of American Idol again. I hope TMH is a huge hit because it’s a great song, but I think it will be Zero Gravity that will skyrocket David to the stratosphere, where he will stay for the rest of his career.
Tonight was a case of “mission accomplished”. Now it’s off to the the UK where he will, once again, get into the bloodstream of the natives, and change them for the better, forever.
Oh, and another thing! I’m now remembering how early in the show, they spent all this time showing us the rehearsals of Paula choreographing the contestants with their group sing, and the group song and dance itself was especially long, AND they took all this time to present Paula with flowers and praise her for her “amazing” body of choreographed work with some “amazing” artists in the industry….
And David doesn’t even get a shout out for not even his first single?
I know, I know, I need to let it go, but still! I want my boy (correction: our boy, right SF?) to get all the respect and recognition he deserves.

A couple of weeks ago when AI ran horribly over it’s time limit, I faulted Ryan’s insipid blubbering for causing the show to run over. And last week’s debacle with the ‘teams’ of two judges for each performance was, as Simon might say, a trainwreck. I noticed he spoke much less last night, and all four judges got to critique each contestant, while still finishing up on time. You’re right, he is just a DJ, and he needs to stick to that during the performance nights -- introduce each contestant, smile, and keep his mouth shut.

off the AI tour.. David lauches a gold album, steps off into a headlining solo tour that sold out nearly every show. Runs off to Asia to MILLIONS of adoring screaming fans. Pop up on AI for a quick run through his 3rd single, flies across the country to do ANOTHER tour with one of the most popular bands in the UK, while simultaneously writing songs for his SECOND album and has yet ANOTHER 47 stop tour over the SUMMER….WHEW.
Oh yeah.. and David Cook is touring colleges and universities through August.
It was great to see David on Idol again. Don’t throw tomatoes, well if you want I will just make a salad….I hope he never becomes too big for idol. I hope he comes back every year until it’s off the air. If the show is big enough for Prince and Smokey Robinson, I hope that he will never deem it too big for him. Anyway, that is our anger talking, not David. He knows the power of this show, for good, and evil, lol.
He wasn’t in the best voice, but considering this lackluster season this was one of the best vocals this show has seen all year. He is all grown up. More confident, more assured, totally evolved. I am proud. He done good.
As for the non delivery of gold records and such. I never expected it as I’ve never seen it done for a non-winner. Maybe Clay, but I am not sure. Anyway, this show, since they decided to pimp Cook has never been about the elevation or promotion of David. It is what it is. I do guarantee two things. Bigger ratings for tonight, and that David will sell more cds in the next two weeks than he did the last month. That is why he was there tonight, and not in the UK. He isn’t a silly young man.

I am very late in posting regarding Rascal’s review of the video. I haven’t had a chance to read all the posts so I apologize if this repetitive to what others have already said. I agree 100% with Rascal (I was convinced that a fan made it) however I think that the fault starts with the recording of TMH. Just recently in the RazarTV interview David said that he basically learned the song while he was recording it. When he sang it for the AOL Sessions we were all shocked because the song came alive there. Live in concert TMH was almost a completely different song than what is on the album. It is my hope that since he will have more time to develop the material for his 2nd album that more of the magic he creates with his music will be recorded.
As for tonight…my response was the same as many of you here -- my nerves contributed to his nerves and his cold in my first listen but I enjoyed it much better the 2nd time around. The fact is, everyone who watches AI already has an opininon about him and one performance was not going to change that. The appearence it was a hit on so many levels, all already mentioned here.
I hate saying it because it sounds so patronizing, but I was proud of him. I pray that he gets some sleep on the way to the UK!
So many positive reviews about his performance tonight, already! They all seem to be positive!

If David had felt half as nervous as I was he’d have passed out on stage, lol! I couldn’t bear to watch the live streaming. Just couldn’t. And he must be exhausted, poor thing. But the good vibe was definitely there. Those who didn’t know him will never understand what a great vocalist he is from this performance, but as Bliss puts it, the immediate goal has been achieved.
Channeling fangirl has exhausted me. I’ve gone through multiple personality changes today and I’m absolutely WIPED out.

I don’t think Jive has had the album and the single certified yet, so I wasn’t expecting them to present him with anything. I have read that Jive is slow/frugal and since the album is nearing platinum and the single 2x platinum, maybe they are waiting to let this happen and certify them then.

I feel so connected with David and when I first was watching his performance I could feel his nerves. I figured it might have something to do with the Judges too and his vlog said it. But, he did great and for many people who haven’t seen him since last year…I think he did AWESOME…especially people getting to see him move more for the first time.

Everyday our David has 3 or 4 mentions for some event. Concert, auction of the bag or Demi tour upcoming. Cook’s alerts have been nonexistent but for 1 where he is in a charity run for cancer. He has not had a professional alert in quite a few days.
In light of the downplay on AI about David’s “achievements”, when you hold both careers up to the light, it makes no sense that TBTB wouldn’t gain by presenting the Gold and Platinum awards tonight.
I mean no ill will towards Cook. I like him. It’s painfully obvious who needed to win last year and who did not. Winning wasn’t everything. It would appear.

I just need to share this with you.
Tonight, after David sang in AI, I received this text from my 23 yr old daughter ——-
“OMG david archuleta is 100 per cent better than any of the current contestants!!!!”.
This seems like a statement coming from an ODD fan but my daughter was far from it. You see…because of school she was not into AI last year at all so she never got the chance to follow David’s progress. She hears David when she is in my car. She thinks he has a good voice but his songs were not exactly her type. This weekend, while in my car, she heard Zero Gravity and asked who the artist was and was surprised that it was David. You could tell that she was impressed with that song.
She is out of school now and have been following this season’s AI and has her favorites(Matt, Adam, and Kris). Considering that this was not David’s better performance…she will probably be blown away if she sees him live in a concert. I think she will now consider joining me for a concert this summer.
I sure wish …David impresssed a lot of non-fans tonight.
It almost doesn’t matter who did or did not appreciate David’s performance (of course, WE all did!) Because it was a watershed moment for David, a rite of passage, and he passed with flying colors. He did his own thing on that stage, faced down those scary=faced judges and let the voice and love take over. Organic David. Spot on.
SB -- I used to have a pretty consistent bedtime, but David has kinda blown that out of the water, like alot of other routines and behaviors. I have relinquished some because of him and adopted new ones because of him. But every bit of it has enhanced my life in so many ways, thus enhancing the lives of those around me. It spreads, like some weird fungus. And is their anything more contagious than his warmth and that smile?
marlie7…I enjoy this time of the day especially after seeing David perform and I will suffer for it tomorrow when energy runs out. My final thoughts, then I will check out the kitchen because I am hungry…
He was gorgeous, when he walked out on the stage he was on a mission. No one is caring or cares as much as he does about anything and that would be why he may have been a bit nervous. But, that’s just fantastic, he’s fantastic.

David is pure love and pure joy. Those that can see the obvious will “get” him, and those that can’t, won’t. It doesn’t matter that he wasn’t at his absolute best tonight. What matters is that he was there. That’s always more than enough when it comes to David. Personally, I loved spending a little time tonight with my dear friend David.

I came back…marlie7…so sorry about the oral surgery, I have had that before…try a spoonful of sour cream on your tomato soup if you are still eating tomato…there are ways to make it better but it is difficult when you are the patient…grated cheese on any soup will make it much more substantial…almost like a casserole…I am trying! Make some jello and put ice cream or whipped cream on top. Applesauce with the same toppings…When my daughter had major oral surgery, she once had a whole sub blended and she said it was great…Any food can be put into the blender…brown beans, chili, mashed vegetables with butter! Give it a go! I had to cook like that for her for three or four months…Ah yes, milkshakes, orange juice and ice (possibly with ice cream as well)in the blender (nice drink)…

I just want to say that tonight DID NOT bring back good memories of how tied in knots my stomach would get whenever David was going to perform on AI. I was and still am so emotionally invested on so many levels I can hardly explain it and it DRIVES ME CRAZY! I really wish I could have enjoyed listening to him for just the pure joy of it, like I did when I saw him on tour, but I just could not seem to find that calm inside. Instead I just could not handle my nerves and his and so instead of waiting until I calmed down, I did something really stupid and deleted my recording of David. Rascal your comments helped me alot because you helped me much quicker put into perspective what I was feeling. I am calmer know and am really ticked I deleted my recording. This is so not how I deal with things in my life. Why David effects me this way, I cannot explain it. All I can do is acknowledge it and embrace
it.

I must be the last one here to have seen our sweet boy perform. Just finished watching in real time on the west coast. Yes, maybe he was a bit nervous at first, but it was a strong performance, full of energy and sass. It was cool to watch the video in the background. And vermeer, you’re right, I’m not a big fan of the hoodie, but I loved the tie. And I thought he was so self-assured and generous with his comments to the bottom two. He definitely showed a new David to those who only knew him from AI. Go Big D!

I feel the same way about AI and as far as I’m concerned this show should self-destruct after this season so David never has to oblige and set foot there again. He looked still terrified in the vlog and that breaks my heart. He was brave, though and delivered a good performance against all odds. Can’t stand those soul vampires!

Why can’t I be more like David?
Agghhh…It was lovely seeing David on tv again. He looked great (although the hoodie made him look a bit younger than just the shirt and tie combo.)
After the performance my father-in-law, who has not seen him perform since last year on AI, said “Wow, that’s a pretty good song, kind of U2-ish.”
It was interesting to see him perform in front of the judges again. With David it was always about connecting with people through music, not trying to play the AI-game for the judges to win a title. It must be wierd being thown back into that situation after the solo tour and asia where he was shown so much love. Especially the tour which felt so organic and relaxed.
Onward to the UK…They’re going to love him there, I just know it!

Me thinks he is wearing the “saving it for something special” hoodie he bought in KL that he wouldn’t show the lady interviewer in Malaysia until later.
The “special hoodie” has got some cool leather (or something) inserts down the front and the entire hood portion that doesn’t show up on TV but shows up fantastic on X-Factor’s vid. I think it is one of those “looks cooler in person than it does on TV” type of clothing choice.

Totally loved his performance. It was much better than the youTube vid above -- HD & stereo surround here. Unfortunately, the DVD player does not record & the VCR is broken, so nothing to savor since…. My computer/HD tv does not receive the fox channel -- too close or something like that. He looked gorgeous and seemed at ease on stage -- didn’t run into any mic stands or anything…… His voice did sound like their was a residual affect from the cold, though. Still loved it. Was iTunes supposed to have a download of this performance? Oh, I so wanted that.

I feel much better after reading about ten different reviews of today’s performance. WOW! Mostly positive! All of them comment on how much his performance skills have improved and on his joy on stage! Thank you, Lord! His difficulties didn’t go unnoticed, of course. Anyone who watched season 7 was familiar with David’s impeccable vocals. But I’m content! I might get to sleep eventually!

About FOD, I don’t know what the problem is: envy or narrow-mindedness. Do they really believe they have the right to preside over David’s fandom and pass on judgement? Newsflash: David’s fandom is multiplying as we speak. No one will be able to control how fans decide to express their love for him. Of course there are great people there, but to me, the moderators have been laxing about this attitude issue. They should nip it in the bud, unless they want to allienate new fans.

I haven’t read everyone’s comments yet so my comment may be out of sync but just wanted to say before going to bed that I think David did great tonight (watched it several more times) even if he seemed a bit nervous. I love reading a lot of reviews that were very complimentary. People have noticed the difference in his stage presence. In less than a year, David progressed so much in his live performance. I am so very proud of him as we all are.
I want to comment on rascal’s article too but will have to wait til I have a bit more time. My eyes are about to shut! For now, I’ll just say I really appreciate the honest remarks, it is not a “fun parlor game” as bigsky (?) said unless I misunderstood.
As for the comments on FOD, I know there are some, maybe just a few posters/regulars who make negative comments about TDC so I would not want to lump everyone together and say broadly “they” or just “FOD”. I love FOD too, what Jenny, Becky, Richard do for David. It is unfortunate that some (JB being one, might as well name him/her) would feel necessary to keep making unkind remarks. What annoys me is not so much the negativity itself, everyone is entitled to disagree but it is when it is inaccurate. Accuracy is not in such person’s interest but rather a need to be mean. Very very UN-David like. But I’m judging too so I’ll stop. Off to dreamland…

One of the things that I loved, ( among many) about this fantastic new site, is: the news feeds, the week in review and the Snarkies and FOD feeds. Both FOD and Snarkies put so much time, effort and creativity into their sites. I appreciate all they do and love that DC embraces their efforts, by providing live feeds. There are many other sites that support David that are also excellent. There will always be negative outlyers ( bell curve) and I think everyone has to find their little niche. I felt so blessed and welcomed when I came here. I love the wonderful writing and creative thinkers here, but that does not take away from what the other sites bring to the table.
Ok, off to work thinking positive thoughts for David who is off to Europe.

Having been awake all night for some ungodly reason, I’ve had time to reflect on David’s performance last night and watch it several times over. First with no sound, then with the sound turned way up, next in slow motion, then normal--pausing in places. I’m so glad for DVR because it enables me to see it, truly, without nervous eyes and ears. He did a fantastic job and I am sooo proud of him. He also, I’m sure made many new fans, because of his singing and his nice remarks to Allison and Anoop. He owned that stage didn’t he!!! Too bad the cameras weren’t on the judges faces so we could see their jaws drop.
For almost a year now he has been performing for thousands of adoring, screaming fans, which I’m sure made him nervous at first, but a nice kind of nervous. But he has learned to feed off of it and be comfortable. I can see where he was nervous and reticent about this appearance. Like all of us in certain situations, that dredge up unpleasant memories, he was faced with those feelings again--ie--” their faces scare me, I don’t know what they’re thinking--I don’t know what they’re going to say”. And there they sat last night like a tribunal and I’m sure he couldn’t help but have those feelings come flooding back- he even hinted to that in his video.
Several of the past Idols have appeared to be nervous and subdued in their guest appearances, I wish they would remove the judges and place them somewhere else during those performances, just so they aren’t sitting there right in front of them staring with those judgmental faces, it’s enough to intimidate anybody.
There were several times when the audience was scweeeing and fangirling and I thought he received a very good reception from the crowd afterwards.
I guess when you don’t sleep -you get long winded, sorry.
From the sound of the tweets, and the writing style, I like others am pretty convinced that it’s in fact David Tweeting.
He IS too hard on himself.. and Gosh darn it.. I hope he leaves that here. I’m so nervous that HE’S nervous going into tonight. Well just a few hours now right? I think I calculated last night that they are like 4 or 5 hours AHEAD of us.. so it’s 4 PM UK time. They must be doing set up and sound check pretty soon.

You need never be embarrassed about a performance. You are gold, you are intensity, you are love and you are loved. Hold your head up and be proud of what you have accomplished in one short year. We were all with you on that stage last night, all just as nervous as you must have been. And we loved every minute of it. Now, let go of that AI performance and go fly with McFly!

Forgive me, I have not read through everyone’s post yet -- as I stated in the past, I always start with the last post and read backward!
I just want to say that I really have no love at all for the AI machine. They did nothing for promo for David. There are so many statements they could have made last night such as:
1. Mentioned his gold album
2. Mentioned his platinum single
3. Mentioned that he just finished up his solo tour (sold out!)
4. Mentioned his Asia trip….
5. Could have said ANYTHING…instead of nothingness….
This was probably all covered last night on here but I was at work and am just finally catching up just now! I just really wanted to express my big disappointment re: last night. David is such a wonderful person and I want him to be loved by EVERYONE in the entire world. I do not mean to be negative….sorry. He looked great and I just feel so protective of him.

Dawn -- It’s tomorrow night in Edinburgh I believe. It’s a Friday night (April 24) performance, which would be about mid-day for us (the UK is 6 hours ahead for me -- so a 7 p.m. show would be 1 p.m. for me). He leaves LA today (don’t know at what time though). I think someone said it was a 15 hour flight. And that he’d have just enough time to arrive, get to the venue, set up, and then perform. If he leaves LA sometime early afternoon today, that would be just about right.
I can’t figure out time/zone changes. It’s confusing to me. Thanks juliebug !!!

It’s so nice to hear David Archuleta sing something with a backbeat on this show. Touch My Hand is prime teen-pop fodder, giving David an excuse to reach into his tender falsetto range and also to lean over the edge of the stage and brush his hands with the clapping girls standing there.
Just watching Xfactor’s video…as soon as I see his smiling face, I started to smile…..He was glowing ….He looked so happy….So I am happy too…:):) I think I am weird…

The historic American Idol save was cashed in last week and all of America waited to see if Matt Giraud’s luck had run out during tonight’s results show. But before all the drama unfolded, last season’s second place finisher David Archuleta hit the stage.
David performed his third single, the infectious Touch My Hand and sent the audience into a swooning frenzy. Archie stepped up his stage presence x50! No surprise with the vocals, darn near perfect as always.
Archuperfect also gave the bottom two contestants some great advice and briefly talked about his tour with our other favorite youngster Demi Lovato before leaving the Idol stage.

I have to say that I absolutely loved his performance. It concerned me at first when I heard his voice sounding so husky like a cold but he was wonderful and I can’t imagine anyone else sounding so good with or without a cold. His energy was infective and you couldn’t help but feel his joy when he smiled (did he ever stop smiling?). For those of us who watch everything he does this was not his best performance. Still he outshown anyone else especially those disco singers. I had to watch with nonfans as I am not at home. Thanks so much for the megaupload so I can now enjoy him on my own and with my little grands who also adore him. Have a great time in the UK, David. Just wondering..am I the only one who DIDN”T think David sounded “sick” last night? David has allergies and may have been a little stuffy when he talked. He was nervous at first, but warmed up pretty quickly. It just seems to me that when anyone thinks his singing is not up to par, that he’s sick. Makes David sound like he’s a sickly person, and he is NOT. There are not many who can function at the pace he’d been doing. Not to mention the stress he puts on himself due to his own perfectionism. He did have a little cold in Cleveland and he admitted he was sick..but who wouldn’t be after being in a warm, humid climate, then coming to the Utah chill. But that was LAST week. He did not sound sick to me last night, nervous at first, yes. Sick, NO. Not last night…unless he himself said he was sick. All he said was he was embarrassed? And for the life of me..I can’t understand why?? That’s just cra-zeh!
(BTW..even when David is sick, he still sounds awesome, ie..his Happy B-day Acapella in Cleveland!). I rest my case!

SF: I did not think he sounded “sick” but it did kind of surprise me how “gaspy” (I hate that word) he sounded during his dialogue w/Seafoam. And I truly do believe that was due to nerves…could be wrong….

During the course of re-watching the video of last night, when I would pause the DVR--there is one picture that blew me away. When he is walking out from the doors with a mega smile on his face--with the bright light shining behind him- awesome-if I knew how to get a picture off a video I’d do it in a heartbeat. But I’m not that bright . Does any one know how to do this -I’d kill for that picture. Anybody that has a DVR try it and you’ll see what I mean.
Did I mention that I dearly love every pore on his body and every hair on his head?

Try playing a GOOD youtube of the performance. When you see the shot you want PAUSE it, then hit the PRINT SCREEN key (above backspace). Now go open MSPaint (if you have PC) and look at the top menu EDIT/PASTE. Save the image and you are done!
