Love and Learn
That Playful Prodigy Named David Archuleta

There are some things one cannot teach. In David Archuleta’s case, not even the best teacher could have imparted what nature bestowed upon him: his rich voice, his perfect pitch, his natural and deep musical sensibility. From early on in David’s life, it was clear that he was a prodigy. Still, even the most brilliant talent needs the benefit of instruction, which his parents and others provided him in both formal and informal ways.
But there is more than what David has learned from instruction and training, and even more than what his tremendous gifts have brought him: what has set David apart from so many other artists (including prodigies) has been his love for his work. It seems as though David simply loves to discover more and more about music, to the point that he approaches it like a child at play.
David has an enthusiasm for music that is genuine and pure. (See video at 2:25) As listeners, we feel it whenever he performs, or whenever he rambles on about his favorite artists. It seems that he looks at music like a playground he cannot wait to run into, a colorful theme park that has so many exciting places to explore. Part of what draws us to him is how he brings out child-like qualities in ourselves. With each bright-eyed grin, David reminds us that there is much more to discover that is beautiful in the world.
Always with an iPod at the ready, David is listening to other artists and learning as much as he can: new influences, new styles, new ways of connecting to an audience. He seems never quite satisfied with his own musical production and is always trying new things. He sings a song we have heard dozens of times but puts a new twist on the melody, and the entire experience again becomes fresh and new. It seems that David’s joy of playing and learning allows him to continue his growth in musicality, voice, and stage presence. Just when we think nothing can surpass David’s latest accomplishment, he outdoes himself and we are awed all over again.
This joy of play—this is what makes David Archuleta a musical tour de force. This is what explains his rapid and wide-ranging development as a musician since early childhood.

As with most children, much of David’s early musical education was under the guidance of his parents. With his father’s connection to jazz and his mother’s involvement in salsa dancing, he was exposed to a variety of musical influences. David emerged in his earliest years as a great imitator. At the age of six, his talent was discovered when he memorized and sang much of Les Misérables with a convincing Cockney accent and perfect pitch. If one listens to some of David’s early performances and compares them to previous versions by other artists, one discovers that he uncannily and precisely replicates the exact vocal stylings of other singers: when he is singing “I’ll Always Love You” in the style of Whitney Houston to a group of New York firefighters; when he is growling through Jennifer Holliday’s “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” when he is singing “Joyful, Joyful” exactly in the manner of Lauryn Hill in “Sister Act 2″; and when he is following every one of Christina Aguilera’s runs in “Contigo en la Distancia.”
David was a prodigy with enormous potential. But he had yet to make the songs “his own,” both in a musical sense and in an emotional sense. David himself says that until he was around 12 or 13 that he did not pay attention to the lyrics of the songs.
The turning point for David came in the summer of 2002, when he listened to Tamyra Gray singing “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” during the first season of American Idol. David described feeling chills while hearing her sing the song, and has talked about how he felt the emotions in the song. Perhaps David learned from this performance how music can be a language—a way to express passion and rage and sadness and joy and elicit these feelings in others. Music now opened up to him like a wide, exciting world waiting to be explored. What more thrilling secrets were there to discover?

After this key realization, David began to pursue his musical education on his own. He obsessed about finding new artists to listen to and to discover how they were using music. His prodigious mind grabbed at new musical information to absorb, whether it was through listening or reading Billboard charts. He built up his own list of favorite artists, people he loved and therefore wanted to learn from the most. He was no longer simply mimicking what he was hearing. He was approaching every song he heard, not from the standpoint of a listener, but of a creator. From David’s list of favorite artists growing up, we can speculate on his learning process and how he developed the musicianship he has today.
It could be that from Mariah Carey, David learned how to stylize melody using melisma. From Stevie Wonder, he absorbed syncopation and soul. From Eva Cassidy, he developed a sense of phrasing, dynamics, and emotion. Jazz, once “his dad making loud noise on his trumpet,” now was a shiny new textbook about spontaneity and being “in the moment” that now shows itself in his vocal improvisations. Combined with the technical foundations and natural familiarity with musical styles he developed during childhood, David was now increasingly able to merge these influences and use them to express himself. Now, before each performance, it seemed as if David committed himself first to “go deep” into each song, “get” its message, infuse it into his own being until he indeed embodied it, and share this with his audience. Before singing “Heaven” to Randy, Paula, and Simon, he gleefully said that he would “make them understand it.”
And this is how David ceased being simply an imitator and became an innovator. Musical ideas now struck him and reacted with all the influences and knowledge he had absorbed before and, as if having struck a tuning fork, resonated from him with a purity and simplicity that was both nuanced, natural, and new.
In David’s first performance of “Imagine” on American Idol, we hear David bringing both melisma and soul to Eva Cassidy’s interpretation of the same song.
In “O Holy Night,” we hear David sing the first verse in the traditional manner, while making the second verse his own variation and adding his own dynamics.
In “Love Me Tender,” we hear David bring R&B touches to what was an originally a 1950′s pop ballad, and create a unique flavor of stylized balladeering.
In “Falling,” we hear David abandoning the traditional pop song structure (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus) in favor of a more free-flowing structure. This is similar to the structure of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir,” which David includes in his Amazon “List of Music You Should Hear” and explains: “This song showed me how much you could do with a song, and that you didn’t have to follow the typical route for creating music.”

And now David exclaims his love for John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Sara Bareilles. From now on, perhaps it is safe to say this: whichever artist David declares his love for is someone David seeks most to emulate and learn from at any one moment. These artists now seem to be the guideposts for David’s process of self-education. And lo and behold: David’s New Year’s Resolution for 2009 is to write more music. “Works for Me” already has that witty, laid-back Jason Mraz vibe…
David has the beginnings of a bright future in the songwriting department. In the songs that David has co-penned, we see David display a strong pop sensibility in a wide variety of musical styles, while remaining true to each genre. We are treated to a combination of R&B and boy-band pop in “A Little Too Not Over You,” a piano epic in “Falling,” bluesy soulful pop in “Works for Me,” pulse-driven techno in “Zero Gravity,” and a guitar ballad in “Somebody Out There.” Most songwriters, in trying to capture particular emotions, tend to fall within the same mode. Elton John, a masterful songwriter, tends to stay within the realm of pop rock. Other great songwriters also tend to settle within a particular niche. But David has the facility to jump entire genres.
David has already amazed us with his musical variety and virtuosity, and his ability to bring out the meaning of other people’s songs. But oh what new places will he take us, once he is able to lay down entire songs that bear the stamp of his soul?
Perhaps David does not view his rapid, astronomical, and continuous growth as a musician as “work.” Perhaps he is simply happy to bits that he can share what he learns with us. It seems that music is something that has brought him so much joy that nothing would make him happier than if we were able to hear what he hears, see what he sees. David, like a child who has just received the world’s coolest toy, knows it’s no fun to play alone.
Which brings me to the video that inspired this entire essay. In this interview taken last summer, David beams about his love for music and eagerly shares the process by which he came to music. Then, in the final two minutes, David shares a story…
Thanks for the great post! David’s gift is so unique and sets him apart from other artists. I get overjoyed watching him be overjoyed with music. It is truly a gift to be able to do what he does so naturally…….I love how he has so much fun with music and always trying new things ….. Random songs stuck in his head, blurting them out at any given moment. And yes, he brings new meaning to other artists songs. He truly makes them his own.
ronald, what a wonderul post! It is very, very clear that a lot of thought went into it. Thank you!
Great post! David is love, David is music. I really like that, on David’s twitter, his bio consists of “I’m David. I love music.” ha ha!
Say no more!
Great post Ronald. So many delicious morsels here. I’ll start with this one:
“It seems that he looks at music like a playground he cannot wait to run into, a colorful theme park that has so many exciting places to explore. Part of what draws us to him is how he brings out child-like qualities in ourselves.”
There’s something akin here to spending time with a three-year-old. Simply walking down the street and seeing a construction site through the eyes of a very young child can be a rapturous experience. You are drawn into their sense of wonder, of everything being new. With David, we can feel that same excitement. Looking through his eyes, we can share the thrill of each new experience, each new artist that he discovers.
ronaldsf,
Thank you for all the time and thought put into developing this absolute joy of a post describing David’s own joy and love of music. So well thought out and beautifully put together! I love the way you take us from his earliest experience at six, memorizing with cockney accent Les Miserables to the present `artist as a young adult.` We all know of that story, but it’s good to be reminded of just what a prodigy we are dealing with to be able to accomplish such a feat at that age! It is wonderful to follow him in your post from mimicking others like the sponge he is to the innovative stylist he is today.
“David emerged in his earliest years as a great imitator.”
“Combined with the technical foundations and natural familiarity with musical styles he developed during childhood, David was now increasingly able to merge these influences and use them to express himself.”
“And this is how David ceased being simply an imitator and became an innovator. Musical ideas now struck him and reacted with all the influences and knowledge he had absorbed before and, as if having struck a tuning fork, resonated from him with a purity and simplicity that was both nuanced, natural, and new.”
“He was no longer simply mimicking what he was hearing. He was approaching every song he heard, not from the standpoint of a listener, but of a creator.”
Bravo! And thank you too for including that interview video at the end of your post. It has always been a favorite of mine. Just watching his warm, expressive, features and the intelligence that sparkles from his eyes is enough to convince me that this is no ordinary singer/performer we are witnessing emerge onto the world stage.
Sorry to get off topic, but on another board, I saw someone describe AI8′s coronation song as “No Boundaries to Suckitude.”
Bwahahaha!!!!!!!!
If AI had any respect for David’s talents, they might have enlisted his help with songwriting for an inspirational song. I’m sure he of the “Somebody Out There” vision could have come up with something far worthier.
Ronald, you chronicle so well the journey from imitator to creator. I actually have a hard time watching the Star Search videos, because all I see is imitation – a young child mimicking what he has seen. But of course, this is a crucial part of mastery, taking in the wisdom of others. You have so beautifully described those influences – Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Eva Cassidy, the jazz influence. Certainly all of these have been critical to the process of finding his own means of expression, as you put it, “to express himself.”
And that top photo is the very definition of boyish charm. Sweet!
Ronald, I always love your articles and knew this one, with David’s adorable, playful grin popping off the page, was gonna resonate with me and put a smile on my face for the rest of the day! Beautifully said!
A quote that also comes to mind and underscores your topic is from one of David’s English teachers (or maybe from Richard or Dean?)
“David is a follow your bliss kind of guy.”
I just love that quote. The sheer joy David gets from discovering, learning, loving and sharing his music is intoxicating and contagious.
Lucky, lucky us to be the recipients of David’s bliss!
And by the way, KUDOS FOR COMPLETING LAW SCHOOL! I’m sure you will make a rockin great attorney! Considering entertainment law?? Ahem…a particular potential client comes to mind!!
Thank you for your post!
Ronald – You did a fantastic and in-depth job of connecting the dots on David musical development thus far.
“David, like a child who has just received the world’s coolest toy, knows it’s no fun to play alone.”
I absolutely adore that line.
Ronald, delurking to congratulate you on your own recent accomplishments, and to thank you for a wonderful post!
That joy in the moment is what struck me when I saw David (from up close!) on his recent solo tour. He’s doing what he loves and loving what he’s doing. So much fun to travel the road with him.
Make that a double, joner #10.
“David, like a child who has just received the world’s coolest toy, knows it’s no fun to play alone.”
Brilliant metaphor, Ronald!
Man o’ man…thank you very much RONALDSF for taking the time and effort to craft your captivating feature article that masterfully illustrates David’s progression to date.
The line pointed out by joner, above at #10, is genius – superb writing skills on your part.
Ronaldsf, great post! Love your look at David’s development as a musician. Greedy me, wanted even more! lol
“Perhaps David does not view his rapid, astronomical, and continuous growth as a musician as ‘work.’” I know what you’re saying but I find it interesting that David refers to the non-singing elements of his career as his “job.”
In fact, watching him in the autograph lines during the Idol tour, each time he’d give someone a hug, he’d say “There you go,” as if he were just another summer student scooping ice cream at Baskin-Robbins.
(HG #6, Bwahahahahahaha right with you!)
I want to see Davids new hair cut!! I bet Brooke gave him the famous trim he is Twitting about!
I missed AI last night. Did they show him? is he going back tonite?
Come play in David’s sandbox and nourish your souls with this magnificent treat, posted at snarkys this morning:

ronaldsf…I learned something new about David today from your article.,something that I saw but didn’t know the importance of. David takes the passions and musical artistry that he sees and most admires in other musicians and replicates them into his own musical creations and that has become one of his building blocks. I have heard David use Fray’s line of “how to save a life” and realize that everything he sings he has passion for in one way or the other. An interesting piece of history about a prodigy.
Thanks, everyone, for the positive feedback!
And I should mention that this post benefited from some judicious editing by our very own TOfan and DavidfanLIZ
I just love the story David tells in the video. All the joy and love that he feels about music — it’s all showing right there in his eyes! It makes him so happy, that he is about to cry.
Joner #10, that actually was also my favorite line as well.
And THANK YOU Zoe! (And everyone else who has congratulated me for finishing law school!) My graduation was a blast and a whole bunch of people joined for lunch. Starting next Tuesday I’ll begin studying for the California Bar Exam, and I’ll be taking my classes in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Although the daily workload is intensive, I actually won’t be as busy and stressed-out as I’ve been the past four months.
Anywayz, here’s a pic from my graduation day:

Yay!!!
HG #6,
I was in a bar in SF watching the AI finale. When Adam Lambert sang that “coronation” song, I was like “What the crap is that? Adam’s a talented guy, but that song was loads of wrong.”
Then when Kris sang the same song, I realized what had happened. Oh, AI, you’ve got millions and millions of dollars, but that song was all kinds of suck.
Congratulations ronaldsf, on qraduating from law school. Quite an accomplishment!
If you guys want a laugh, go watch the gif of David grasping in thin air for the mic stand during a performance and it’s even captured on the big screen behind him. Muwahahahahah!
He is just too dang cute and sexy for his shirt. Even if he does appreciate it by lovingly hand washing it.
Just an aside. Z100 NYC is heavily promoting their DA concert next week. They were talking about past Idols and their 2008 incomes listing:
T Hicks 300K
DJA 1.3 Mil
DC 2 Mil
Jordin 4 Mil
Kelly 5 Mil
Jennifer 9 Mil and
Carrie U 14 Mil
interesting. But none of them probably had as much fun or cared less than our David.
Ronald – you look as bright and shiny in your graduation picture as David often does – ready to go! And your writing is superb – I enjoyed the whole article. I had never thought about how David has built his capability through imitation and now has developed the ability to use those styles as building blocks for his own unique way of singing and writing. I learned a lot!
Angelica #20 – You can’t tell us to go look at something and then give us no reference to get there! WAH!
marlie7, oops,
LOL! It’s at Snarkys.
Marlie – it’s at snarkies.
Ronald,
What beautiful writing. A lawyer with writing skills. I love it!
The aformentioned line is also my favorite!
BTW, If you haven’t been to A2, you will love it there. My daughter graduated from the University of Michigan and went to law school elsewhere. But the U of M is where she wanted to go.
Congratulations and good luck with the bar exam.
You are studying for the Cali bar in Michigan?
Yeah Betsy, I am – the California bar is so popular(!) that there are study courses for it all across the country.
I’ve been to A2 a number of times before – I actually go to the Detroit-Ann Arbor area twice a year to do political work. The town is laid back and gorgeous!
Ronald,
What a beautiful post! The thing I love about David is that he is very in touch with his emotions and wants to share them with us. He loves FEELING the music and words to a song, and doesn’t mind letting go, with abandon so that we may FEEL the music too! He is not afraid to show his emotions on stage. Just like he shared his tender emotion with “LOVE ME TENDER”, he was not afraid to show us that emotion and that is how he connects with his audience. This is why I feel he is such a UNIQUE artist. I love that interview video too. I love the fact that he has that soulful part to him which connects him emotionally to the song. He just has such great taste in music, singers and I love how he really wants to do more mature, indepth songs and not just bubblegum pop. Love him, love his choice of music, and love his artistry.
Ronald,
I’m coming out of the shadows to say congratulations on your accomplishment – how wonderful! And your article is awesome – a great writer too!
I wish you much happiness and best of luck!
Ronald: Congratulations on finishing Law School! You’re an inspiration to us all! My daughter will be graduating from high school next month with aspirations of going to Law School after college. With this in mind, I’ve been wondering how you’ve been and closely waiting for a post from you, hoping you mention your studies.
Brilliant post! It was interesting to read about David’s progression into the world of music and thus into our hearts. You, so diligently, traced the steps David needed to take to come to this point in time.
The two videos you used in connection with your post were perfect accompaniments. I particlarly enjoyed the end of the second one, where David spoke about an eleven year old boy who won a song competition after singing David’s version of “Stand By Me”. David said that it was like seeing himself in the past. Then he said “It was like ‘Who knows what this kid can do?!’”
That’s exatly what we said about David, during AI7.
And now he’s showing us!
Congratulations on finishing law school, Ronald! I forgot to mention that earlier.
Also, I’ve been following some interesting discussions about AI, and already Adam’s fans are preparing for Adam losing due to homophobia (wow, they’re spinning already – I guess Kris really has a shot at winning!). But those who are not giving up on an Adam win keep referencing last season in which being non-threatening (as Kris is viewed) doesn’t always guarantee a win since David didn’t win and he’s as “non-threatening” as they come.
I find it fascinating that, among non-David fans, he’s considered “non-threatening” when I believe so many people were hating on him precisely because they found him threatening.
Granted, I believe both David and Adam are threatening to conventional ideas about masculinity, but in very different ways obviously.
Just thought to share what’s being discussed at the moment.
Last night a few of us were discussing Adam vs Kris. Although Adam is undoubtedly a dynamite singer with amazing stage presence, he lacks something for me. I’ve been searching for what it is that he’s lacking…..truth?….humility?…honesty?…realism?
And then I came across this article which reflects my feelings better than I ever could.
Adam Lambert Belongs on Broadway, Not American Idol
May 19, 2009 by Colt Kingston, Associated Content
“Adam Lambert is one of the most interesting American Idol contestants ever to be on the show. There is no denying that he is talented and has an it factor. But going into the final show of the season, I am still not convinced that
Adam Lambert should be the winner. I think Adam Lambert belongs on Broadway, not American Idol.
If this was a competition to pick the next star of a Broadway musical, I would dial in votes for Adam Lambert all night long. I might even buy tickets to see Adam Lambert on Broadway if I had nothing better to do. But this is American Idol, not Broadway Idol.
In previous seasons of American Idol, contestants who performed or sang as if they were trying out for Broadway were often criticized and booted from the show. Being “broadway” on American Idol has been a negative up until Glambert screeched his first high note and rocked it like he was the love child of Elvis Presley and Steven Tyler, assuming they both were gay and men suddenly could give birth.
The reason Adam Lambert can get away with performing as if he is on Broadway is because he is that good of a performer. It’s not even as if he is auditioning for Broadway; it’s as if he’s already gotten the part.
The problem with being that good of a performer is that everything he does feels like a performance. When Adam Lambert performs as a rock star, I don’t see a rock star. I don’t see a singer. I don’t see the next American Idol. I see an actor. I see someone pretending to be a rock star.
I would prefer my American Idol to be the real thing.”

Bebereader #30, thanks for that! “I see someone pretending to be a rock star.” That’s exactly how I felt watching Cook last year… but look what happened.
Great grad pic, rsf! Hope you heard all of us cheering you on!
Angelica, #21 “He is just too dang cute and sexy for his shirt. Even if he does appreciate it by lovingly hand washing it.” ROTFLMAO
Ronald, what a thoughtful and smart and insightful piece. And cheerful
There is that pure love of his art that does communicate and does connect him with the material as well as the audience. It’s magic. There is a difference between being impressive (e.g. Lambert) and being a true heart connection (e.g. you know who).
More on this later — just wanted to post my congrats for a terrific article, and for your graduation!
Oh, and — perfect pic for the feature spot. That moment was most definitely David at one of his most playful.
Once again David is inspiring me to write about him. I just watched the second video from this wonderful article by Ronaldsf. Who else in this world speaks with more genuineness and focus than David. It is such sheer joy to watch and listen to him speak. It is so organic and real. Every word is like nectar of the Gods. It has such a soothing and healing quality, especially when he is speaking about what he loves, namely, music. His face, which is so beautiful and warm to begin with, literally lights up and draws me into his pristine soul. By the end of the video, I feel lighter and less burdened by whatever it is that is seeking to sabotage my current happiness.
Tonight is the first anniversary of David being denied his rightful title. For the first time I am getting the message that it did not matter then or now. When you are a beacon of light and hope, and can sing and perform the way David can, everything else seems very mundane in comparison.
Ronald – love the graduation picture! Thanks for sharing that joyful moment with us!
“The problem with being that good of a performer is that everything he does feels like a performance. When Adam Lambert performs as a rock star, I don’t see a rock star. I don’t see a singer. I don’t see the next American Idol. I see an actor. I see someone pretending to be a rock star.
I would prefer my American Idol to be the real thing.”
See now, what does that even mean? Last year, Cook won because he showed what a performer he was, while David lost for being too real.
Now, all of a sudden, we’ve decided we want our American Idol to be the “real thing”? At least Adam put on a damn good show while he was on TV. Whatever!
The moment David lost American Idol, I’m just not feeling anybody carrying on about how American Idol needs to be “the real thing.” They had the real thing last year, and blew it.
Is my bitterness showing?
OMGosh Ronaldsf! I am not even done reading (have to get back to work, ugh) and have not read any comments yet but I just have to take a minute to say wow, what an article covering David’s beloved art, his music. I can not wait to resume later this evening. Thank you!
“See now, what does that even mean? Last year, Cook won because he showed what a performer he was, while David lost for being too real.
“The moment David lost American Idol, I’m just not feeling anybody carrying on about how American Idol needs to be “the real thing.” They had the real thing last year, and blew it.”
That’s exactly my point. David is as real as it gets and should have won; we all know that! But David didn’t lose AI because he was ‘too real’. And Cook didn’t win because he ‘showed what a performer he was.’ David lost for a variety of reasons, poor song choice being the one that’s most often referred to, when we all know it was behind the scenes sabatoge. Cook won because David lost. Simple.
Ronaldsf – Congrats! Thanks for sharing the journey with us this last year.
Loved the post. That’s all. Loved it.
Hellogorgeous 35-
American Idol is not ‘the real thing’. And even if it were…
David is the Uncola.
Love and Learn.
Bebereader, I guess I was just bristling from that whole “Adam Belongs on Broadway” thing. On American Idol, the term “Broadway” has always been used as a pejorative, which was supposed to mean (thanks to Simon’s dismissive “you belong on Broadway” bit) that a singer is not meant for pop superstardom, that somehow to be on Broadway is to be of a “lesser talent.”
A lot of nonsense, of course. The thing is, I loved, loved, LOVED David (do I need to convince anyone here? ha ha!) when he was on the show and of course afterwards. And while I don’t love Adam, I did find him exciting and he (and Allison) kept me awake for most of this AI season. He was very rock glamour, flaming diva, and I was enjoying his schtick. His was a performance that livened up the competition. I was not expecting anyone this season to be able to match David’s genuine talent, grace, and beauty, and it’s because Adam is a complete 180 why I can appreciate him on a different level and accept him as a winner.
Again, for me, just as my view of last year’s finale is that America chose the ordinary (Cook) over the extraordinary (David), this year is also a choice of the ordinary (Kris) vs. the extraordinary (Adam). A very different kind of ordinary vs. extraordinary competition, but let’s just say, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kris eventually beat out Adam. On the other hand, Adam’s OTT performances could pull him through. Who knows how all this will go down until later tonight.
Either way, that was my basic criticism of that “real thing” review.
David was in the studio today!
And now he’s going to eat some Thai food! I do hope we get to see him tonight. Maybe I’ll look at E! or something, if AI won’t give him some airtime.
Ronald, I’ve read your article a kagillion times, but a new phrase jumps out at me each time.
“And this is how David ceased being simply an imitator and became an innovator. Musical ideas now struck him and reacted with all the influences and knowledge he had absorbed before and, as if having struck a tuning fork, resonated from him with a purity and simplicity that was both nuanced, natural, and new.”
Beautifully stated. Lovely image.
The music teacher in me appreciates how you give specific examples of his mastery, of how his Imagine was informed by, but different from Eva Cassidy’s, how in O Holy Night and Love Me Tender, he brought his own taste and musical style to these well-known songs. In David’s hands, all is fresh and new.
Bebereader #30 Yes, yes, and yes. There is no doubt that Adam is a fantastic performer with a versatile voice. But I have never been able to get past his mask, his stage-persona du jour that keeps me at arms length from him. I would buy tickets to see him on stage, but it’s unlikely I’d buy an album because he doesn’t move me with his voice. And the screaming really turns me off. I loved this description: “like he was the love child of Elvis Presley and Steven Tyler”.
Kris is an okay singer. I’m not sure he should really win, either. He’s had some wonderful moments, and some so-so moments as well.
HG: “Being Broadway” never seemed like a lesser place to me, when described by the judges, but it did imply that the person had a different set of skills and talents than what the pop/country/rock singer needed today. And I thought it meant that the person was too dramatic, too masked to make a true connection with the audience. Well, it still does mean that, and that is why I have such a hard time putting Adam in the winner’s place. He is everything that past season’s performers were told was “bad”. The rules of the game this season changed.
Love and Learn is beautifully written and so comprehensive regarding David’s evolution as a musician and performer so far.
Great job, Ronaldsf!
And, the video interview you post at the end shows David at his sweetest. What an otherwordly creature our David is! I know he’s not a saint or divine, but at times he makes it hard for us to keep that in mind. Thank the Lord for those thighs! They keep our cult tendencies at bay.
Okay, y’all. Off-topic. There is a crossword puzzle challenge in the Editorial section on the front page. Let us know if you are the first one to complete it haha!
You could see David here!
http://media.myfoxla.com/live/2/
Trust me, Marlie, I believe Broadway stars have tons more talent than our regular pop acts out there now. I guess for me, I don’t mind the “masking” and dramatics because, if that were a problem in pop music, Elton John or Mick Jagger or Freddie Mercury or Prince would all have been told in a derisive tone delivered by none other than Simon Cowell that they “belonged on Broadway.”
I don’t mind over-the-top performances; they’ve got a place in music too. But I also like my low-key performers. Fortunately, David doesn’t fit either category easily since he’s in his own Archuworld of intimacy.
AI is a competition first and foremost, and if we’re going by who’s the best, then, I would have to give it to Adam. I thought Kris held his own against him, but Adam had more of an edge.
Just like last year, I won’t take anything away from Cook’s own talent and performances, but I really believed that David knocked him out – and far more astutely than Adam knocked Kris out.
I don’t know. I guess the criticism that he’s “more Broadway” (and I don’t agree – he’s 1970s/1980s rock music throwback) doesn’t feel legitimate to me as a reason for Adam to not be the eventual winner. You could say Kris is “too coffeehouse” to be an AI winner. There’s only two of them, and one has to be the winner. I would pick the better performer, IMO.
Anyway, the cool thing about debating this is I have zero emotional investment. And that feels so good!
Last year, right about now, I was laid out on my sofa feeling nauseous, that’s how anxious I was about David losing (because I had already seen the Dial Idol numbers showing Cook way ahead).
Tonight, I get to watch with detached interest.
he’s on deck!
you could here him and see his arm!
hear…
HG: I’m with you on not being emotionally invested!
Valbraz – my cult tendencies actually worsen at the sight of them. LOL
The kool-aid and chucks sneakers line forms to the left of the right thigh.
Ronald – I have to read your article again – WOW!
Ronald
Delicious article! What you wrote describes the genesis of David’s artistry to perfection.
“as if having struck a tuning fork, resonated from him with a purity and simplicity that was both nuanced, natural, and new.”
This may explain why I have multiple copies of Zero Gravity, My Hands, Angels, Don’t Let Go, etc on my mp3 player. The changes he infuses EVERY time he performs on stage has become a signature.
Bravo David!

Thanks for the link, I caught the David show just in time.

screaming for David!
The sound is not working for me!
Squeee! Just saw David on the TV Guide Channel!
They’re of course doing the Idol special tonight He’s on now!
Not really noticing any hair cut. He looks lovely and his 1000-watt smile is beaming to the max as always.
Not good quality….but it’s David.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98-Nt0mm2z0&eurl
David actually tried to sing something – it was really quick! ha ha! That song association thing again. Don’t remember what the interviewer said to get him going.
Oh, did I mention he’s gorgeous in royal blue? Or does that go without saying? ha ha!
Funnygirl #51
Well, there are all kinds of cults out there!
Anyway, I like to be reminded of his humanity. I don’t need Jesus 2.0.
Gavin DeGraw is wearing a scarf a la David Archuleta (don’t you just love how bb is setting the trend? ha ha!).
dja Thanks for the video of David on the red carpet! Hope there’s a better one coming. However, it was kinda cool to hear his voice almost one octave lower when he was speaking! He looks ravishing in royal blue, HG, ITA!!
hg – don’t remember if you mentioned…. but gorgeous indeed!

#61 Valbraz – I was just kidding. I agree. I only need David 1.0 LOL
I love you David!
Have to admit how much easier on the nerves it is to watch the AI finale without being emotionally invested in either of the two contestants.
More David

Hey Everyone!
Ronaldsf – I always look forward to reading with glee when I see your name as author of a post. Your article is well-written and addresses David’s artistry with superb technical precision. I have always had a deep interest in what makes David tick musically and long for the day when someone in the media can do a biotype documentary on his early musical influences to his current muses.
Thanks Again for a fabulous topic of discussion!

I’m kidding too! Lol!
Oh, my! Joking on a post is complex.
I’ll leave this to you and Tofan!
You’re the masters!
Thighs and archuthrusts FTW!
BWAHAHA! That was sick!!!
Cook was very touching, though.
Maaan – Jason should have just called David up from the audience – Would have made his AI finale misgivings all worth it.
I was about to say what is Jason Mraz doing singing “I’m Your’s”? That’s David’s song! Duh! haha
joymus: I was thinking the same thing!
Marlie – great minds…
Something is up with AI. Kris sure is getting a lot of love from all the red carpet interviews and how the show has been structured so far. It’s almost as if they’re now giving him a chance to shine all of a sudden. Learnt my lesson well from last year when Cook started more of the spotlight than David before the results were read. But then again it could just be my conspiracy radar going bonkers again – LOL!
I was thinking that too! Okay, I cannot believe that they let that frog-in-her-throat Megan have a solo while Allison is reduced to introducing Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas. What??!!
Um…did the just censure those fools?
God, I loathe that “Boom Boom Pow” song. Just blech!!!
Joymus…hmmm…very interesting!
I saw Kris with Keith Urban but was Adam onstage even once tonight to perform?
Joymus, I called it for Kris since the Today Show when both Meredith and Matt called t for him, and neither were paying attention to the season. They just tuned in for the finale and preferred Kris. I have a feeling casual votes were made that way.
I too noticed Kris is getting a lot of love, and where’s Adam? It’s almost an hour and he hasn’t been sighted since the beginning.
Hu all! Just came on AI to hear DC sing Permanent. Wow great job- My favorite of his- talk about sad. I adore Urban- Kris did amazing with Keith. I am lookng forward to Ronalds article & ths posts…but DID they show David in he audience yet??? Hope I did not miss that.
ronaldsf… very insightful post, a joy to read, thanks.
“David has an enthusiasm for music that is genuine and pure.”
That is what keeps me hungering for more…. the real deal that David is. In this world of “fake” everything, David hits the bullseye, the heart of the song ….everytime.
The interview at the end- had not seen that in a while, David at his candid, pure, joyful, self!
Congrats on your graduation Ronald! Well done and nice pic!
Watched AI last night for the second time this season (first time the SLC auditions) and was rather bored, too bored to watch this evening. The judges comments, yawn. Same old crap, different wrap…. yawn.
Forgive the typos and spelling!
That stupid bikini girl came back. Ugh!
David, please cover your eyes!
omigosh I hope David has his sharpie…
So, they show Cook’s reaction to Kara’s striptease but not David’s huh?
Gee, I see I’m spamming. Oops!
David MUST be wanting a bajillion sharpie markies to draw clothes on BGirl and Kara of all people? OMG this show is becoming too scandulous for words!
There are no words…
*Grabs* the SPAMMER It’s mine ya know?
I can’t even type what I think of this show so far. Oh wait, it’s horrible.
Abrra
I just spotted David in the audience, did you???
I just saw DAVID! Sitting in a harem of lovelies all around him.
Abrra
When? I missed him!!
When Ryan was in the isle introducing Cyndi Lauper and Allison. Roll back the DVR
Abrra the TRUE spammer
Ah!! David next to a lovely blond on his left & ?? did not see who on right.
HG The camera scanned the audience applauding for Allison and Cyndi Lauper and David was sitting one seat off the aisle. I saw a blonde woman occupying the aisle seat. Didn’t see the harem Abrra saw. Abrra, you’re quick!
hmmm…ok hate to seem petty BUT he is pretty far back in the audience. I mean really if the want to keep the audience engaged he should be front & center and the camera should be flashing on his reactions…
I saw him before they sang. After they were done they showed him again? I missed it!!!
Imagine that.
Abrra
Ronald: Such a great article. Your discussions and analysis are so vivid. With the video and pictures, I felt like I was watching a movie about David from 6 years old on! So enjoyable and fun. Thanks, and oh, congrats to graduating from law school!
Well, I still see tons of similarities between David’s and Adam’s idol journey. Their artistic presentations are very different, partly because of their different experience in the last 8 years, and partly because they are both true to themselves. Some people love Adam’s sophistication, some people find David 1.0 endearing. I watched the video of David missing the mic umteen times and would watch umteen times again. Um, if it were Adam, I do not think I would go for it twice. And the picture on top! It made me smile with him.
So looks like Adam might end up being a runner up, after all. I think being a front runner is really a drag. I am not emotionally invested in Adam but I respect his courage, his fearlessness and his talent. I think I will be a little sad. I hope he will genuinely be fine with it, like David. Hopefully that was what he learned from talking to David backstage last night!
rae
True dat! Look how he dominated the red carpet. Grown men were tripping over themselves to get to him.
Abrra
Abrra- I am with you= those silly awards just a waste of time.
Adam with wings? Heh. David needs to wear that suit!
Why am I so MAD! I hate this show more and more. All I feel like doing is cursing!! BAH! DAVID SHOULD BE SINGING SOMEWHERE UP THERE TONIGHT! He should have been singing with his IDOL Jason Mraz for “I’M YOURS”.
Wow – Kris got a guitar solo with Keith Urban
Adam gets a band descending from the roof, smoke, lights and KISS. Hmmmm – the plot thickens.
David in full leathers…………./faint
Abrra
P.S. BUT he would have sounded BETTER THAN ALL OF THEM UP THERE!!
Joymus, as it Adam receiving this treatment or KISS?
Carlos Santana, everybody!
Where’s Lupe when you need her?
Hey guys spamming together (sorry Abrra lol!) sure is great. Haven’t had this much fun in a while!
With all these musical guests it really is an enjoyable finale – this time around.
I agree this is a fun show, esp. since I’m not invested in who wins this time around.
The performances have been really good. I really liked Allison and Cyndi Lauper.
Ugh! That Megan chick is horrendous! Is that deliberate since she’s performing with Steve Martin?
*Grabs* SPAMMER from Joymus! MINE!
Abrra
Steve Martin wrote that song?! No words!
Abrra – I swear I was just borrowing it for a bit. I don;t know about HG though – she might have made a carbon copy when you wern’t looking – LOL!
Are you kidding me? I just read that David’s seat is 10, that’s TEN rows back????
He was last year’s AI runner-up..and he didn’t deserve a seat in the first row, or at least in the second?? What’s wrong with that picture?
Hers is a knock off. I have the one true SPAMMER!
Abrra
SF
If you recall, he wasn’t even going until Cook urged him to go. I am surprised he got a seat.

good Lord Did Rod Stewart get into Paula’s medication?
Just saw Bo Bice! He’s season 4 runner-up! Can we at least get a camera to linger on David’s face like that?
Rae – tooo funny. I’m just in one long laughing fit from all the comments.
Tatiana REALLY is nUTS!
I just saw the red carpet pics at FOD..TO DIE FOR!!
HG- I am with you= they have also showed Justin G. twice…
David is too far back & not on an end seat- so unless the go to him in the crowd or bring him up….grrrr.
OMG!!!!!!!!! I seriously was spazzing!! I was so sure that, while Tatiana was singing “Saving All My Love,” Whitney was going to come down the stairs! I thought that was going to be the big surprise!!!
*Breathes deep.*
Damn you, American Idol! What the heck was all that if there was no payoff?
Ugh!
HG..maybe Bo had a seat closer to the front and the cameras.

QUEEN:)
Abrra
wow- that song perfect for adam…(hope he wins) but i did not vote…
American Idol. Where more is more.
Crazy duet! Crazy!
Now, that’s how close out a finale!
I now hope Adam wins (no, I didn’t vote). But, I also think it would be awesome to see Kris’s stunned face if he does.
Good luck to both!
Not enough David spotting tonight!
David gets no recognition as far as I’m concerned. Sorry, I’m just MAD.
FLASHBACKS! argh!
Abrra
Kris Did IT – OMG!
YES!!!!
Abrra
For once they got it right. Kris needed the win, Adam didn’t.
Abrra
i felt all along Kris was gonna win because I thought Paul blew it last night when she said to ADAM “No Matter What Happens on this AI journey…blah, blah, blah”..>Randy said the same thing to DAVID last year “NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS….”
I knew it. Oh, and that video of David missing the mic – I saw that like weeks ago when it first happened …I should post these things when I notice them …that’s OLD NEWS to me! I laughed when I saw that on Snarkies today.
I knew it! I KNEW when it came down to it, America would choose the ordinary singer.
I knew Kris would have been stunned.
Can’t wait for the media meltdown.
Got to go check the Adam Lambert fansite meltdown (and offer them my sympathies – I know how they’re feeling right now).
Poor Paula – faking that smile. Karma is a heck of a payback!
Paula looked like she was STUNNED!
Abrra
Last year – except for Randy, Paula and Simon were congratulating each other. I don’t think they even stood up for the coronation song.
What this means though si they may attampt to now position Adam as the most successful runner-up. Adam is a good performer but he leaves me cold as a singer. David will still hold his own.
wow shocker- guess i should have voted= but honestly i did not care that much. interesting..hm…….
Joymus, I think they’ll be treating Adam like a co-winner. Neither he nor Kris grabbed me emotionally the way David did.
If there’s one thing I will say about Season 8: it proved that there will never be another Idol like our David Archuleta (who they couldn’t even bother to give him some screen time tonight – run, David, run!)
The idol insider for our station – Louis Aguirre said that the quiet word about Kris is that he used to help all the other idols pick and arrange songs.
Simon coudn’t even stand during the coronation song……He has no respect! Poor Kris was in shock I think! I am thrilled for him!!
I really think David should have performed tonight. That aside, I’m glad Kris won this thing. Don’t get me wrong, I liked them both, but I think Kris needs the AI machine behind him to make it. Adam just needs a microphone, a stage, and a crowd and he’ll do just fine. I see big things for both of them.
I’ve often wondered, assuming American Idol lasts long enough, what would it be like to have David return as a mentor – a decade or so from now – and wonder what he’d be like then. I imagine he’d still be Archdorkable, but in a more mature sense, and he’d probably wind up singing whatever song the contestants chose for their performance.
THANK GOODNESS that’s OVER!
So Kris won? How did Simon take it? He’ll probably quit the show in protest now.
How many times did they show David, last year’s best singer? I know David is happy with the direction he’s going in so now I hope at last AI can be a distant memory. The AI runner-up title belongs to Adam now. David can finally be rid of that albatross!
Congratulations & Good luck to Kris! I think David liked him.
SF – well said. Being the front-runner and now runner-up is one heck of an albatross.
I don’t know about you, but I am so ready to put this all behind and look to the future with David. Yes, that is easy for me to say because I just was not attached to either finalist this year.
I really like the advise David gave to both Kris and Adam. He basically said that no matter what happens just keeping pressing on and making the most of the doors that open up because they will open up. I really wish them both the best of luck.
That’s true, SF. David gets to pass that baton to Adam now (they were seen taking backstage last night – funny, but when I heard that story, I had already predicted Adam would be the runner-up).
I believe David liked both of them. Can’t wait to read his twitter!
It works best for A.I. if they can say there are two “winners” — especially if one is the supposed underdog who snatches victory from the jaws of defeat — double the publicity, duelling fanbases, the works. That’s what it’s really about, the show making as much $$$$ as possible. The singers are merely the MacGuffin.
Run, David, run.
Is it over? Great! I haven’t watched it and don’t intend to.
Is David done with AI now? Oh, I hope so.
I enjoy your comments, though.
What’s the next stop for David?
And don’t forget all the “America wasn’t ready for a Gay Idol” media buzz that comes out of this.
Awwwww, the Adam Lambert fans are completely in shock and heartbroken. I think I ought to offer them some comforting words.
This was fun watching the show with you guys tonight (those of you who tuned in).
G’nite all!
I think that once again they have two for the price of one…Kris like Cook probably would not make it without the title and Adam will make it without the title…A repeat of last year and I don’t think for a minute that they did not know who was going to win…They play act very well once again…or if they did not know then they are mixed up judges…
No mention of David just after coming off of his huge tour and not having him to meet his well known hero Mraz on stage, was rather sinful.
Sure Kris won but is now sandbagged with a terrible coronation song. Hope it does well despite the arrangement.
ToFan – good point. I hope they don’t make him the next Taylor Hicks as payback.
Anyway – I had sooo much fun tonight with everyone. Till tomorrow. Good Night.
Ronaldsf..your post was stellar! And the DC FOX interview is my all time favorite interview during the AI tour. Talk about an adrenaline high! It was the first time he was allowed to just talk, and TALK he did! Loved it!
Now it’s time to look to the future with David. I feel a very big collective ***SIGH*** all over Archuworld! Free at last! And it feels so GOOD! And maybe now the continuing competition between the David’s which the media and even some their own fans just can’t seem to let go of, will finally begin to subside and finally put to rest.
And finally, I hope David goes to some after parties, mingles and has a great time! He looked gorgeous in the pics tonight and as happy as ever. He exudes joy!
Good night all! For David…
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Watch over him, protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his Archangels do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he’s weary. Give him the stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey. Keep David and and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born. And please Lord, give us, David’s forever fans, the wisdom to know when and how to do right by David. Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests. May his positive and good Karma continue to attract those with positive and good Karma! May he continue to encounter goodwill and happiness! May he continue to be healthy and strong wherever his journey leads him. Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray. Amen
David, keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts! Take care and keep your cell phone with you at all times! Remember to tweet an SOS if you ever find yourself in need of help from your Archangels! We will be there for you in a flash! We missed you badly, and will always love you madly!
Contigo siempre con amor!
I did not watch the show or finale this year, but I am surprised at the outcome! I really thought that Kris had it locked in with the show promoting Adam so heavily.
Am I correct that David’s Idol contract is over after tonight? That it is a year-long contract? Having that said, is Jive connected to Simon’s 19 Entertainment at all?
Congratulations Ronald and wonderful article! I had not watched the DC Fox video in months. I still recall that Syesha, Ramielle and Jason were also interviewed that day. However, David’s interview was so different. You could tell he lived and breathed music.
From what I saw of the Idol performances this yr, I was pulling for Adam and I felt he earned the win. Not a big fan of his voice but I’m entertained by his overall performances. His performance style reminds me of Fantasia’s. I agree w/Kurt1960 #143; Kris needed the win. I believe Adam will overshadow Kris during the tour.
freo, the way I understand it is 19 Recordings/Jive Records is part of the Zomba Label Group, a division of Sony BMG. 19 Recordings is part of 19 Entertainment, the company founded by Idol creator Simon Fuller.
Ronald, your post is just amazing. Loved every word. You are so very talented, smart and warm (sounds like someone else we know) and no doubt you too will fulfill your dreams. Congrats!
pabuckie #102 I totally agree with you. Your posts are consistently on point and you are obviously one of David’s most ardent supporters.
As for the results, once again the obvious winner is taken to the finals where he is denied the rightful title. Last year I was sickened by the result. This year I was shocked. Whenever a guy wins, he is not the best of that year (Studdard, Hicks, Cook, and now Allen).
Hopefully, David no longer will be introduced as the “AI runner up” now that we have Adam as the heir apparent to that ignominious title. David’s post AI career officially begins tomorrow. I’d say that the next level is international superstardom, but he’s already there.
Well, innocence and humility, that narrows the field down to a…one!
Boy, did he look gorgeous tonight.
Angelica: Here is another:
MALE POP ARTISTS a la the full range of David Archuleta, Jason Mraz, etc. are wanted by an A&R Executive at a Major label. He is looking for the “real deal’ – your vocals must be stellar and your image needs to be star quality. He is not looking for talent in the developmental stages. Please submit two to three songs online or per CD, you must include lyrics, photo and bio. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Friday, May 22, 2009.
TAXI # S090522PO
marlie,
I bet that one would thrill David to be placed on the same level as Jason Mraz as an example of someone with “stellar vocals,”" star quality,” and talent that is not in the “developmental stages.”
Angelica, I know I thought that, too and it made ME happy

“i felt all along Kris was gonna win because I thought Paul blew it last night when she said to ADAM “No Matter What Happens on this AI journey…blah, blah, blah”..>Randy said the same thing to DAVID last year “NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS….””
Yup, I remember Randy’s words vividly. So year and year again, same thing happens. The results were rigged. Sigh.

“As for the results, once again the obvious winner is taken to the finals where he is denied the rightful title. Last year I was sickened by the result. This year I was shocked.”
I felt doubly sick because last year’s feeling of betrayal also came back. Now I know why some wise people would not watch this show again. Sigh.
Got to watch the David red carpet stuff to lift my spirit up. I can use some 1000 watts smiles for sure!

Good morning everyone! Ha ha! Desertrat, I’m getting a huge kick out of David being described as one of the “bigger celebrities.”
Now that I’ve slept on it, I suddenly have a new spin on the Idol finale. It’s very clear from last night that TPTB are still propping up Cook as an idol winner. I was really surprised that he was the only previous idol winner to perform in the finale. Did you notice how he 1)opened the show and 2)was featured in the Ford commercial, acting as if he was handing over the crown to his successor (I remember Kris was the first to shake his hand)?
My theory is: having Adam follow Cook as the newest Idol winner would have created serious competition with their other “rocker” winner. Adam would definitely show up Cook on the rocker end. Kris in no way threatens Cook. And as a laid back singer-songwriter, he gets to be marketed in a very different niche.
I’m now inclined to believe this season was rigged all along. They pretended that Adam brought something new and different and flashier to the show, and the over-pimping seem designed to create a backlash. I knew Adam was in trouble the moment he appeared on the cover of EW.
Kris, the “underdog,” the ignored contestant, ended up appealing to more voters because he felt more “organic” and less like a “star” that the show and media already anointed Adam as. I really feel this was all engineered to prevent Adam from winning and, thus, outshining Cook. I really believe, with two male winners back to back, they didn’t want competition in the same pop-rock genre.
Anyway, glad the season is over. Glad there’s a new runner-up so David himself can move on from the show and stop being “that kid from American Idol.” Only a matter of time, bb, and sooner than you know it!
Seriously, it’s amazing the “Adam got robbed” backlash has started so quickly. This new “shocker” situation will now wipe from the public memory the dismal and devastating end that was last year. That burden has been lifted from my heart, and I feel so good to move forward along with David.
Interesting interview with Carrie Underwood. She was so nervous about performing there, she was pacing. Her quote – “Everything about the show is designed to strike fear into the contestants.”
Abrra – I do believe I will burn a new cd today. Thanks for sharing the mediafire files.
Angelica#159, I’m confused, and finding it hard to believe David or his mgmt would put an ad out there for songs. It just doesn not ring true..not when David has been collaborating with some big name songwriters and he’s doing his own writing as well. The ad makes it seem as if there’s some desperation for songs for the new album and that’s BS. It just does not make sense to me. Excuse me if I’m wrong, but it just does not sound right and could be a scam.
For Abrra #168, the Manila setlist:
TMH
Barriers
ALTNOY
You Can
My Hands
Your Eyes Don’t Lie
To Be With You
Don’t Let Go
Waiting for Yesterday
Stand By Me
1000 Miles

Teamarchie reports on impending ZERO GRAVITY release…LIVE VERSON??
http://archuletafanscene.com/2009/05/21/team-archie-reports-on-impending-zero-gravity-release/
Silverfox – I was thinking the same thing that it could not be for DAVID.
SF, I was thinking the same thing too. This just doesn’t sound like the kind of gimmick David would go along with. I don’t know.
It sounds to me like the A&R person is looking for music for someone similar to David??
The release of the LIVE version of ZG would be awesome..BUT only if it’s released for radio play and not just on iTunes. David is not played here in my city and as far as I know, not anywhere near here in any of the big markets. Last time I heard CRUSH was several months ago and I have never heard ALTNOY played on the local stations. I don’t think Demi is played here either, so I just want to know how the promoters of the summer tour expect tickets to be sold here if their music is not heard on the radio?? We need some BIG TIME promotions and a good start would be the release of ZERO GRAVITY live version, and CRUSH, ALTNOY, DLG live versions played on the radio would be a great promotion. What is it about some areas radio stations who refuse to plays David’s music..what does he have to do?? Get arrested for DUI? Beat somebody up? What??
SF, It could very well be a scam. I found the link last night in the comments section on Snarkys and noticed they have the ads displayed on their site today too. When I clicked on the link at work just now, I got a warning that that site is accessing information that could be a security risk, so I got off quickly.
I would recommend no one else go to that site and if one of the admins could delete the link,# 159, I would appreciate it.
It had me questioning it too, after I posted. Seems like David would be more likely to have trouble wading through all the possible songs writers have submitted than be advertising for help from amateurs.
I read a rumor on Fan Scene that ZG may be released to iTunes only. That would be a crime. The song needs radio release and huge promotion to be a summer hit, and it definitely can be with the right promo.
Angelica, per your request, your earlier comment has been deleted.
SF, pabuckie, HG – I don’t know, I actually think the ad placement (if it is in fact for David) is a good sign and David may be very supportive of this strategy. We all know how particular he is about the material he sings and perhaps he’s not completely satisfied with the quality of the songs he’s written or has to choose from and wants to broaden his options. What would he have to lose? I could also see David embracing the concept of giving opportunities to new or unknown songwriters and I would imagine the royalties associated with the songs would be less expensive. Either way I hope Jive is allowing more time for song selections to guarantee his sophmore album will be a huge success.
freofan..this describes David to a T..
RHYTHMIC POP SONGS a la Jesse McCartney’s “Leavin’”, David Archuleta’s “Crush”, etc. are needed by the manager of a young, well-known male artist who was a recent runner-up in the finals on American Idol. This artist has what is described as a “pure” pop voice that is not only reflected in his vocals, but also in his lyrical themes. They don’t want to hear anything too edgy; lyrics should emulate his sense of innocence and humility.
Using David’s name for gain…for shame! Could be for Blake or Justin??? hahahahahaha!
SF, #176, I was thinking the same thing. David’s songs need to be on the radio, like now!
My local station played the heck out of Crush, then Altnoy once or twice, then nothing. When a friend emailed to ask why they took David off their playlist, they said “He’s too young for our demographic.” Meanwhile, they play all of Jordin Sparks’ songs. And *gasp* Miley’s single. Bunch of bozos out there in radioland. sheesh
TOfan…
“When a friend emailed to ask why they took David off their playlist, they said “He’s too young for our demographic.”
What they mean is, he’s too nice & clean.
Jordin’s ok..after all she had a duet with a badboy girlfriend beater, and Miley..we all know about Miley’s antics!
But in reality..this is where AI is an albatross for David. They still view him as “the little kid from AI”. And I’m wondering if DJ’s ever watch YouTube?
Hi everyone!
If ZG is only released on itunes, does that mean that radio stations will not get it? What is a radio release anyway? Can’t we gift it to them on itunes? We shouldn’t have to – but that song needs to be on the radio. It is an outright injustice that he isn’t played on the radio.
I have spoken to some DJs here in Michigan and gotten excuse after excuse. Finally one admitted to me that they just don’t like the kid. I told him he must have an evil heart. Others claim not to play teenagers and then I point out the other teens they just played and they have nothing to say. Others claim to follow the Billboard AC chart so then I tell them the songs they just played that are not on that chart. They have no reply. Then they claim that they HAVE TO play the top 10 AC chart songs, but don’t seem to know that Crush was in fact there for many weeks. Those that do play Crush have no good answer as to why they won’t play ALTNOY. I have been told “we don’t play newer music” and then I advise them that they just played Miley’s new song and Pink’s new song, and Kelly Clarkston’s new song and David Cook’s new song. Her reply was “I don’t know what to say.”
I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but c’mon, could this be any more obvious?
Thanks Liz.
TOfan, what do they mean too young “for our demographic?” How is it OK to be young and female, for that same demographic and not young and male? A friend of mine who lives near me called to request David’s music be played and was told by the local DJ, “He needs all the help he can get.”
These bozos are beginning to p** me off.
Maybe David should move to the U.K., or Singapore, or Malaysia, they seem to like him better and treat him better over there!
joner..still don’t buy it. And they just mention David’s name, don’t say it’s FOR David. Smells fishy to me. (but I have been known to be wrong on occasion).
FG..Like I asked..what does David have to do? I have these nightmare thoughts that David will never be given a chance at some of the big radio markets except for Disney and NY’s Z100, and he will decide to leave the US for a country where he is embraced and appreciated not only for his music, but for who he is. We witnessed this to be true not too long ago.
What is wrong with the radio stations in this country??
I want ALL GOOD THINGS to come David – HE SO DESERVES IT!
And, I have news for you Z100 even though they’re promoting his concerts, they don’t play his music much either…I’ve requested ALTNOY and called and spoken to DJs and they have an attitude and respond with “WE’LL SEE WHAT WE CAN DO” – but with a very negative attitude.
ZERO GRAVITY would be the biggest hit of the summer as far as I’m concerned and it just doesn’t make sense to to play it ON THE RADIO!
TYPO – it just doesn’t make sense to “not” play it on the radio.
FOD has something about Songs for David..and if FOD has it, it must be legit. AND I stll cannot believe it. It’s beyond my comprehension! Someone wake me up, please!
SF: There are lots of songwriters out there who would love a chance to send material to any number of artists. These companies like TAXI act as a filter. They screen out the fluff and inappropriate genre material for music companies, etc. I have a friend who writes country music and he goes to these “filter” events in Nashville every year. It’s similar to sending a query letter to an agent and that agent determining which publishing house and editor might be interested in your particular book. And why wouldn’t David and other singers want to look for other material, a new co-writer, and perhaps give some other newbie a chance?

Bless you :0)
Abrra
marlie, I understand all that…NOW. But why not just say DAVID ARCHULETA is looking for songs? I was under the impression David’s next album was going to be a “more
mature sound” per David himself..this ad does not seem like that’s what they are looking for, IMO.
this from Jenny at FOD..
So it would seem that David’s second album may potentially include some radio-friendly rhythmic pop tunes. (And hopefully some deeper, soulful organic material, right? Right, David?)
Confession. I would rather David be a poprock star rather than a rhythmicpop star. One Republic, The Fray, Coldplay as opposed to Jesse McCartney. Not too edgy?
I agree with Jenny..I would prefer a One Republic, The Fray, Coldplay as opposed to Mccartney.
And the wording on the ad..”They don’t want to hear anything too edgy, lyrics should emulate his sense of innocence & humility”.
David already does “edgy” with his LIVE performances, which look anything but innocent!
OMG! Ma-nee-la LIVE is 10x better than US tour Live! Go get the files! He has it going on and communicates so well.
Abrra
Well, whose definition of edgy? We all know David would sound ridiculous singing “Girl shake that bootymeat…”
David said this in an interview that’s up @ MSN:
“I definitely experimented with things on the first album and there are things I never plan on doing again but it was a great learning experience for me.”
…”never plans on doing again” I’ve often wondered why he hasn’t performed Desperate in concert. Maybe he feels that song is too edgy for him.
I was hoping for good news today of some sort but I had a feeling that it would not be. David needs to be on tv…
DAVID NEEDS A VIDEO TO BE ON TV…Everyone who is anyone has videos on the music networks…Concerts are not enough they only reach a few thousand not millions…
Why is it all so slow here? He needs a new producer to begin with, they have proven to be on the wrong track. I had hopes that they would realize what they have but they don’t…
How in this world can David not be on Oprah by now when she has other young stars from around the world before him?…Pack up David, you may have to go to the UK for awhile…
We are happy when little things go well because we are looking for his big break…It has been a year and their is no doubt that something is very wrong.
I know that our Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain and others leave here for the US for more coverage but for the US to have eyes wide shut is perplexing…maybe ‘rasacal’ has some insight for us…
I’m chuckling at how fickle we are – we are whining (me, too) about David not getting radio play. Then when we see an ad for him to have radio-play type songs, we are worried that his next CD will not be “organic” enough. LOL
marlie7 – so true!! Is there any pleasing us?
joner..IMHO..Desperate is EXACTLY the kind of song I think WOULD be played on the radio..but then I LOVE that song, so I’m biased.
David, David…what can WE, your fans who love you so much and WANT so much to hear your beautiful voice on the airwaves over & over again, do to help you? I just don’t know? I think we have alienated the DJ’s with our requests..so now what?
Now we can sit back and let Adam’s and Kris’ fans alienate the DJ’s
MALE POP ARTISTS a la the full range of David Archuleta, Jason Mraz, etc. are wanted by an A&R Executive at a Major label. He is looking for the “real deal’ – your vocals must be stellar and your image needs to be star quality. He is not looking for talent in the developmental stages. Please submit two to three songs online or per CD, you must include lyrics, photo and bio. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Friday, May 22, 2009.
TAXI # S090522PO
So here we have David right along side Mraz…have fun finding anyone else with the full range like David…
SB..I have often wondered why Oprah has not had David on as a guest. She’s always been so supportive of up & coming artists, especially the nice, innocent & humble artists with fantastic voices. Could there be an underlying factor we don’t know about? What is the deal there? Has Oprah ever had an AI alum as a guest? If not, it could be she just doesn’t care for AI.
I think David should guest on SNL…doesn’t have to be risque’.
He doesn’t have to be a host..just a musical guest doing DLG like he did in concert! Yeah!
Oh, SF: If David did DLG on TV, he’d be hurtled into SuperStardom overnight – YOU should be his publicity person.
silverfox – I’ve always loved Desperate too. It was the one song that jumped out at me on his album because it was so totally different from anything he had previously performed and showed he was not just “ballad boy”. There has to be “something” about that song that David does not like. It’s the only explanation for him not performing it in concerts. Hasn’t he performed every other song from his CD except Desperate? I think it’s too “dark” for him or something…I don’t know.
SF…I think that David should guest on…let me see…Oprah, Regis, SNL, Jay Leno, anyone would have a great show with plenty of cheering if they had him…or were so lucky to!
Marlie..just one guest appearance on a late night talk show doing a live performance of DLG would definitely do it! So what’s wrong with his mgmt and why have they not signed David to do just that?
joner, it’s not David who doesn’t like the song, it’s his father who didn’t want the song on the album in the first place. He thinks David is too young for the song..uh, EXCUSE ME??? He said “it’s David in a few years”! Can you believe that? It’s a perfect song for David to sing as there is so much uncertainty for so many young people at this point in time. Young people need songs they can relate to..that mirror what they are feeling, but with a sense of hope and that is what Desperate is about.
Abrra #195 – I really want those Manila LIVE versions but I don’t know how to do all that – I am NOT technically savy. I clicked the box to select the audio but then I don’t know what to do?
The more I think about it..and I may get in trouble here with certain people, but maybe, just maybe David liked what he created with the writers he has collaborated with so far, but because David’s “manager” who has made sure David has and continues to have a certain image, may not have agreed with what they came up with so they have put out a call for songs without an edge, etc. etc.
David doesn’t have to cultivate an “image”. He is who he is and we found out he may record songs a certain way, but his actual interpretation of the same songs is so different from the recordings, it’s scary! Example…DLG, TMH, Hands, WFY. I don’t know about you all, but I got a totally different impression of the songs after seeing David’s LIVE interpretations. Sorry, “manager”, but David may an innocent in the biblical sense but he exudes a very sensual “image” we can’t get out of our heads. And there’s not much you can do about it. Trying to change the image that’s in our heads at this point would, IMO, be a big mistake.
SF – LOL!
OK..I’ve kinda taken over the thread as I tend to do sometimes, so I will give my soapbox a rest for a bit. Going to use my lunch time to take a long walk to cool off, even though it’s 85 degrees outside.
BBL!
I find the calls for songs without an “edge” to be interesting. I will probably get nasty e-mails for this, but we can’t forget the church that David is connected to. I have gotten nasty e-mails for saying this, but I do not underestimate the church’s power re: PR and image. As to how that is carried out, I don’t know, but it would not surprise me.
Rascal, any thoughts on this? Do you think this “non-edgy” thing is what could happen if certain things are left unexamined?
pabuckie . May 21, 2009 at 2:06 pm .
I will email you.
Abrra
I don’t get the edge difference in Save the Day and Desperate. Save the Day is about lying on the bathroom floor, hanging from a ledge, being tied to the tracks. Lyrically, they are both songs about desperation and loss of hope and looking for someone to save them. Both songs extend that hope at the end. Is it the rock ballad edge to Desperate that is the objection? Maybe some people, including David, don’t feel that is a genre he can compete in. But seriously, I don’t know anyone who could bring the passion, smexy edge and powerful vocal chops to a rock ballad and make you believe it like he could.
If it’s a question of retaining an image of innocence, as SF said:
“David doesn’t have to cultivate an “image”. He is who he is and we found out he may record songs a certain way, but his actual interpretation of the same songs is so different from the recordings, it’s scary! Example…DLG, TMH, Hands, WFY. Sorry, “manager”, but David may an innocent in the biblical sense but he exudes a very sensual “image” we can’t get out of our heads. And there’s not much you can do about it.”
David can no more keep from bringing an edgy sensuality to a live performance than he can stop himself from breathing. That is just David and you can’t wish it away or say it needs to go back in the bottle till he’s ready. He blew the cap off that bottle a long time ago.
Angelica, I agree 100 percent.
Angelica: No truer words than these:
“David can no more keep from bringing an edgy sensuality to a live performance than he can stop himself from breathing. That is just David and you can’t wish it away or say it needs to go back in the bottle till he’s ready. He blew the cap off that bottle a long time ago.”
David’s thoughts on his “image”… (from MSN interview)
Do you feel pressured that you’re part of the new generation of clean-cut musicians like the Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift that are role models to so many fans?
I think that’s so cool. How cool is it that Taylor Swift is not only such an amazing artiste and songwriter but she makes music that everyone can enjoy. I’m not really under a lot of pressure. I’m just who I am and people say, ‘You’re clean-cut,’ and I go, ‘Thank you!’
So you take it as a compliment?
Yes, I think it is a compliment because I know that parents don’t have to worry about my being a bad influence. I feel so bad if parents were to say, ‘I don’t want my kids listening to him because he’s inappropriate.’ I’d hate that because for my kids, I’d want them to listen to good stuff that has a good influence on them. The emotions in music are so contagious.
“THE EMOTIONS IN MUSIC ARE SO CONTAGIOUS”
Oh David, if you only knew how you’ve infected us!
The source: http://entertainment.my.msn.com/features/article.aspx?cp-documentid=3325482&wa=wsignin1.0
joner..how do we spell..E N I G M A ???
Not only is he a puzzle we have not yet been able toput together simply because he has perhaps “hidden” those puzzle pieces and doesn’t even know it?
Even if his live performances stayed at the “heat” level of…say the Richmond solo concert, what about some of the VERY sensual poses in some of the most gorgeous photos I’ve ever seen. Come on, David has several female relatives, and surely they are not blind to what is obvious to us…or are we just perverted? He is a professional photographer’s dream and our’s as well.
SF – He’s such a tease….er…
…a brain teaser, yeah, that’s it
In those pictures from last night – one word comes to mind.
Breathtaking.
He is so beautiful.
Radiant.
Glowy.
Okay, that was more than one word. Once I start I can’t stop. I have to go look again.
He is mentioned everywhere today.
As far as Taylor Swift, she is an amazing songwriter…all about cheating boyfriends, broken hearts, getting even and anger. She admits they are all about HER life experiences, starting at age 14 or so and if a guy becomes her boyfriend, she will write a song about their relatioship, good or bad. Gee, I had to to through more than half my life before I experienced some of the emotional lyrics of her songs! What a boring love-life I’ve had
#222 Betsy – If you enlarge those pics you can really see his beard coming in. He’ll have to be shaving every day if he isn’t already.
It’s actually kind of unsettling seeing that!
joner
Betsy..that’s because he is a photog’s dream..they love how photogenic he is. Clean-cut & smiley, or sweaty & sexy..no one else makes love to a camera the way David does. Is he aware? I hope he never will be…otherwise he may start saying “No pictures, please!”
Would it be too much to hope for an interview such as on Entertainment Tonight or Et (Canada), Extra or Excess Hollywood or any of the others? These interviews for the internet are fine but not enough. Maybe I am missing them and should look for him on tv tonight right along with JBros and Taylor Swift…haha
…make that Access Hollywood…even if it is sometimes in excess..
SB – If you go to snarkies, you will see that he was indeed interviewed by ET, The Insider, mentioned in Prime Time in No Time, and a ton of articles today. (the interviews are good)
The gorgeous photo is the second one up of maybe 16 photos of American Idols, including past winners. (yahoo TV) He is second to only a pic of Kris and Adam.
p.s. I had the day off today and did nothing but surf the net and read my book!
And VH1.com!

I can not for the life of me figure out who wrote this post on FOD, but it is under the ad from Taxi requesting songs for David and pertains to that subject. Anyway, I love this quote. My sentiments exactly and my apologies for not giving credit to who wrote this and the rest of the insightful post.
“Edgy and mature and current do not have to be incompatible with innocence and humility.”
Nuf said.
Angelica..that quote is from Jenny who also said..
“My views do not necessarily reflect those of other FOD staff.”

David met up with “friends” after the Idol parties..I only know Carly & Jason,
hope the link works. It’s from idf..

betsy…thanks for the interview info. You lived up to your day off searching as requested..!! I owe you one…
Kendall Beard – season 8 (blonde)
Norman Gentle – season 8
Casey Carlson – season 8 (next to David)
I gave up looking after that. But I love that he went to an after party with 6 girls and 2 guys.
(I went to the idol site and looked them up)
RonaldSF: Your article is simply brillant and beautiful. Wow.
OK, I know I’m addicted to this song (but so is everyone else, right?) Here’s another DLG from Manila (this one is more FULL BODY and better audio. Although I still love the other one I posted the other day better (because of the close-up view! ha-ha) this one is really good too! P.S. comments reaching 300 soon so I may not be able to load this page much longer.
I’m getting such a kick outa 6 girls and 3 guys!
pabuckie #240 – Yep! We are all addicted to DLG – you are not alone
Looks like David may still be in LA taking care of business, but he may be going home for the Memorial Day Holiday weekend. I wonder if he’s contemplated moving to LA? I think it’s a real possibility, especially after the summer tour. I see him expanding his horizons and he needs to be where the action is. This is all just me thinking out loud. I really have no idea what David is thinking right now other than working on his next album. I do hope he continues to show his independence and maturity in being “on his own”. There’s something very appealing about how he can show child-like exuberance at times like last night, and at the same time, he’s taking care of his business affairs. Jeff may be there with him, but if he is, I’m glad he’s not “with” him…if you know what I mean.
Amen
David, Good night & sweet dreams. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts! Take care and keep your cell phone with you at all times! Remember to tweet an SOS if you ever find yourself in need of help from your Archangels! We will be there for you in a flash! We will always love you madly!
Contigo siempre con amor!
Geeezzz, I have been having serious computer problems since late afteroon yesterday. I think it had four viruses. I ended up going to bed early.
Ronaldsf, Thank you so much for the video of young David from Star Search. Upon all of my ODD, I had never seen that one before, thanks. Also, the background in your picture reminds me of my Alma Mater, USF.
David looks like enjoyed himself at the finale and it seems he is somewhat of a media darling. I was reading on another site where people were speculating that Kris’s fame will be similar to Daughtry and David’s–low key but popular.
Hi Jello & Dawn & Vee & Beebee & JR & Juliebug & Errbody (((HUGS))
I went back and looked on FOD Website where they showed the ad placement which we are assuming is about David. Written under the heading it clearly states the following:
“Disclaimer: I know nothing from our source about this advertisement. Nothing at all. I know what you know.”
First let me say that even if it is about David it does not mean that is all he is going to do on his album. He seems to me to have some pretty strongs feelings about what HE wants and what HE does not want to have on a new album.
Are we EVER truly going to give Davids Dad a break and stop assuming it is him controlling David whenever we hear something we don’t like. Is it really that hard to believe that David really feels the way he feels without assuming his Dad must be “holding him back” when the opposite is true. David’s Dad and Mom more then anyone else in this world love David, know him and what his hopes and dreams are. They don’t hold him back, they “have his back”.
Truly I do appreciate your posts although tonight was a little frustrating reading for me, but that’s just me. I need to go calm down. Give me a minute and then I’ll be fine!
Just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the encouragement and comments! I have read every single one and really appreciate it!
I haven’t been able to post in a while because I had to leave the Bay Area much sooner than I planned to, and I had to pack and do all these errands! Currently in LA… near David! LOL
SF#176 – Been waiting for someone with credibility to breach the subject of song promotion, lately. Crush was well promoted when released and was and still is played here. However, I have yet to hear ALTNOY (which I love). Not sure but I thought maybe the Seattle area was more rocker territory. You know home of Curt Cobain and grunge rock – YUK. The concert seems to be doing fine, however. VIP packages sold out quickly.
My daughter in law in DC/Maryland area said she (actually my 3 1/2 yo grandaughter recognized it first and brought it to her attention) heard all three songs (Crush, ALTNOY & TMH) played in an asian grocery store she frequents – thought it was some local radio station. Anyway, it makes me wanna cry everytime I think about how ALTNOY seemed to never launch. I’ve quit listening to the local pop stations as they have not even played Crush since Feb/March. Hopefully, ZG will be better received.
Crazy story wanted to share. I was having my eyes checked recently and during the consultation with the doc, Crush came on & I totally lost concentration on what he was saying or where I was. Almost like an out of body experience or something. Weird?!? After the song finished, I found myself at the front desk trying to make an appointment. Never happened before, hopefully never happens again.
ronaldsf – love your aticle – so insightful and beautifully written. Like a song that flows from your mind to your heart, taking in all the senses. Such a wonderful treat. Thanx for that.
Congrats on graduating from law school. Such a huge accomplishment and so much to look forward to. Being selfish here but glad you’ll be having more time to spend with us at TDC. Love this place……..
abrra #167 – thanx for the mediafire download. Really good quality mp3′s. Made up a Manilla CD with the set list. Put 2 Barriers because of the combo (& only) TMH & Barriers – never too many Barriers for me, anyway. Really enjoyed the rehersal audios – his voice sounds so rich and full without all the clutter of live recordings (talking, screaming, shoutouts, too much band noise, etc.)
HAPPY FRIDAY!
Here’s a BEAUTIFUL montage of David from a woman in the U.K.
I still am amazed at how the U.K., Malaysia and Singapore all treat DAVID with so much love and respect and GET HIM better than the U.S. does.
What a great start to my day. Checking out the new pics of David on the AI red capet over at Snarkys…David, you sure know how to work those blue and black checks!
Dayum, he is a photographer’s dream. He sure brought all his smexiness to the show!!!
One thing I’m sure David will change, if he can, for the 2nd album, is to spend more time with each song before recording it. He’s mentioned a few times in interviews how he recorded ZG and other songs practically the day after learning them.
He, even more than we do, appreciates what he brings to a song once he “lives” with it and in it for a while. They merge and fuse and nitro meets glycerin, man.
Last night, I was back at the venue where I first saw David sing live (A.I. tour). I felt kinda melancholy, even though it was a benefit concert featuring Sheryl Crow and Sting, for Pete’s sake. I still would have preferred you know who on the bill, lol.
They were great, of course, but as performers (rock royalty and all) they seemed detached, removed. It made me appreciate even more how fortunate we are to “get” David now, when we can have a front-row seat for this stage of his career — everything’s new and exhilarating for him … and for us.
Thank you, fandaforeverti48! I should be able to spend some more time around here in TDC now.
Actually, I most definitely WILL — I’ll be needing breaks from bar review!
By the way, David made me laugh with his latest tweets about being called by 24 Hour Fitness. Those folks were barraging me with calls every day once trying to get me to sign up for a membership!
And David was called 3 times a day? He probably had a hard time saying “please don’t call anymore.” Someone at IDF mentioned he probably ended each call by saying “Thanks!”
Zoe #252 – totally agree – he sure stands out in a crowd, doesn’t he? And, that blue check shirt – he looks good in dark colors…blues/purples…and the smexiness – always!
WAITING FOR YESTERDAY -- at 3:28 (CLOSE-UP VIEW) of David “missing the mic”
And another lovely tribute video. There’s even a profile picture at 1:32 where you can see that David has some five o’clock shadow below his sideburns and down to his jaw.

I am on the same page as you. The hang wringing is a real turn off.David is happy and is doing just as he wants and needs for HIS career.

Love that video Marlie.
Love me Tender.
pabuckie #257…that made me laugh and people asked “what is funny?” How do you say “I laughed because David missed the mic with his hand?”…We see humor in strange places…or maybe it is justus…
I’ve been rather fixated on the photo of David sitting with the bunch of people at the diner. For some reason it brings back memories of when I was young and of “dating age” and out socializing with a group of people where there was that one really attractive and extremely charismatic guy in the group (you know the one….we’ve all been there) who is super nice, polite and unassuming, kind of mysterious and intriguing because he doesn’t say a whole lot (and doesn’t need to), and although you can tell that he’s not interested in you “that way” you feel really drawn to him and comfortable with him (and you wish he would be interested in you “that way”), yet he gives off the vibe that he’s already “taken” or “spoken for” and already in love.
David’s in love alright, and her name is music.
From Snarkies – Dean Kaelin said this
David is already working on songs for his second album and I am anxious to hear what this album will sound like. When he recently had a week off after his solo tour, we got to write a bit and David got to experiment with some of the ideas he has in his head and some of the sounds and beats he thinks would be good. There is a bit of a discussion going on however about the direction of this album. I think David would like to do something more acoustic, with some of the beats and sounds that he has heard in some other artists and things that he really likes, but the label seems to want him to do a more “dance groove” kind of cd. David can see the good of both approaches since at a concert the fast stuff goes over very well, but he still likes other sounds as well.
Info from Dean on the direction of the new album:

sorry – you can go ahead and delete mine! Pabuckie got here first!
Squeee!!! Just got a notification that Dean Kaelin has updated his ebook and it’s ready to download! If you haven’t yet purchased his original journal it is MUST reading for all Davidophiles. The original cost was minimal, and all updates are free.
Looks like the updates are substantial…it’s been months since I’ve read anything from Dean, so this is exciting stuff!!
Here’s the info:
As an eBook owner, you’re entitled to FREE UPDATES FOR LIFE. We’ve just added a major update, 9 new chapters in all, with all the inside information on David’s career from May 2008 to May 2009. Also included is the December 2008 update which included two studio recordings of David when he was age 12. You can’t get these recordings anywhere else!
Simply go to http://www.davidarchuletastory.com/update.htm and download the eBook. Save it to the same location on your computer that you saved the original file. When your computer asks you if you want to “overwrite” or “replace” this file, click “OK” or “Yes”. Then open the eBook and enjoy.
Boy, we’re all so on the ball I sometimes wonder how we get anything else done! ha-ha
I am a FAIL at twitter. Tried to change the picture to a more current one, and now it will not update the new one. There is a good side……..
I found a new place to SPAM!
Abrra
Abrra – twitter? forget it, I can’t even figure out burning cds or changing my gravitar!! ha-ha
Twitter is “working” on the bug since April. Wish I had read that before deleting my picture.
Abrra
Abrra here’s something I learned from twitter.
If your account is “protected” David can’t tweet you back, so you have to unprotect it. Then, you can protect it again when you want to get off twitter. Is that right?
Hey everyone! Sorry I’ve been MIA, but that’s how preoccupied I’ve been. Anyway, heading out for the lovely day, but did want to share what some anonymous person wrote on my blog (my original Anxious Black Woman, not Soul David):
“thank you for the archuleta love… i think this guy was robbed, plain and simple… he has some seriously mad pipes, is naturally soulful and is ready to just blow up… saw him in concert in richmond on his recent solo tour – dude sangggg his face off, and has gotten kinda sexy in the bargain… i want more brothers and sisters to check him out.. he has the potential to move robin thicke aside as the top ”blue eyed soul singer”… mark these words… this guy is the real deal.”
So much word!
I’m comforted to know we’ll be getting a mix of acoustic and “dance tracks” on the new album. Still wish Jive would just hook him up with a solid producer and just let him loose.
Until next time!

Mine is set to unprotected. No point in privacy if you want to be out there. If I was concerned about anyone reading mine, I delete the account.
Abrra
pabuckie~ thanks for that info on twitter! I had my account on protected and I’m just sure that’s why bb’s many replies to my tweets have not been recieved. haha! Well. It
could be the reason he’s never tweeted me.
Zoe~ thanks for the link for Dean update! Got mine stashed away for some enjoyable reading later this evening.
Gotta run. Just found out late last night I will be having a houseful of guests for the holiday weekend to entertain. Man! Don’t these people realize I have extremely important research to do!
HG,
AMEN!
Angelica – ROTFLMAO!! Entertain them folks with music from THE VOICE!!
Thanks for the Dean’s book info! It’s hard to believe, but I never read the original book yet. I will definitely get it this time around. The lifetime free updates is a very good deal.
Abbra I don’t care who reads my tweets but I didn’t want a lot of followers – it’s amazing how people follow you just because you’re following David.
Zoe–is it still possible to get Dean’s original book? I never did get around to signing up for it. Do you have the link for it?

Great news about Dean’s updates! I guess the downside of having a record deal at such a young age is that you don’t really have the time (or freedom) to really, truly experiment — to write and perform and try out different sounds anonymously in some low-rent coffee house.
But whether he takes the organic/acoustic or dance/pop route, I’m sure David will find a way to make the music he wants to make, even if it is with the whole world watching.
Wheee!!! A new text and phone message from David!
What a sweetheart he is to always be thinking of his fan family!!
pabuckie @251: The video’s still pictures are hers and in black and white. Nice! The song is Kris Allen’s version of “To Make You Feel My Love” from AI. She seems to be a big McFly fan from Sweden. Thanks.
Can someone plese tell me David’s vocal range? Thank you…
So fun to read David’s tweets today. He is sure sounding like ONE HAPPY GUY! He’s like my Pied Piper, tweeting (tweetering??) away, and I skip along behind him, happy to be privy to his playful chatter.
Amazing how he can bring a smile to my face and warmth to my heart, no matter what challenges the day brings.
pabuckie and marlie – thanks for those beautiful tribute videos! Must have missed Kris Allen’s performance of “To Make You Feel My Love” this season – he brought that baby home.
Why do I find myself wishing to hear David sing that song? Haha, because I ALWAYS want to hear David’s interpretation of every beautiful love song I hear!
And Love Me Tender…always been one of my most favs. Thanks, marlie!
Can someone pretty please direct me to the instruction site for uploading an avitar? I’ve gotta get me an AI red carpet pic for my postings.
David Interview in Wisconsin…aired on AI finale night.
Zoe – try here.

SB, I remember reading somewhere that David’s vocal range was 3 octaves. Dean was interviewed and mentioned details at some point. David also has “relative pitch.” I am not sure that means.
Just a “fly-by” here to say HELLO to everyone @ TDC.
How the heck are you all?
Thanks djafan…much obliged!
Hey jello and everyone! Just doing a “fly-by” myself! I’ve been spending most of my spare time desperately trying to win tickets to that “intimate” performance in TriBeCa!
I actually got my younger daughter to team up with me as my contest buddy! I took her and her friend (who is a David fan) away last weekend. We listened to my ipod for the entire 5 hour trip there and back. Every third song was David! I was in heaven!
Anyway, when the talk turned to David, my daughter said, “I wouldn’t mind meeting him.” THAT WAS ALL SHE HAD TO SAY! I told her, as a matter of fact, David was coming to the city and she jumped in with both feet playing games on the website to earn points towards the raffle! We’ll see…
Oh rondaldsf almost forgot! Love that photo at the top of your article. Thanks for a great retelling of “The Book of David”! It was so nice to read all you had to say and be brought back to re-live so much of the past year. Thanks again!
pabuckie #264, maybe David can have two parts of his album: one that is more acoustic, and one that is full of dance stuff!
Beyonce just a released a double album, with the ballads one one CD and the club hits on the other. She had two personas: BEYONCE and SASHA FIERCE!! Yes!!
#292 Freofan – Eli (or Alex, can’t remember) talked about this in a vidchat with FOD prior to going to the UK. This is what I remember him saying. If I remembered wrong, sorry.
“Relative pitch” is a note relating to the note before/after it. So great relative pitch would mean David knows how to string random notes together that would be cohesive and in pitch with each other; regardless of the steps between them.
“Perfect pitch” means that if a note is played that you can identify what the note is (its a high C over middle whatever and vice-versa). Eli (or Alex) said that David didn’t have perfect pitch because he can’t identify the name of a note.
Needless to say it also means you can sing on key and not sharp/flat.
did you guys see his new blog?
Checking in from LA
Hey guys! It’s me again. I’m reporting from LA, and have been here for a bunch of meetings. It’s nice to actually be here this week because, as you probably know, the Finale for American Idol was on Tuesday and Wednesday! I got to go both nights, and had a really fun time. Congratulations to Kris! He was really impressive throughout the whole season, and I think he really deserves his success. It’s always good to see good things happen to good people, you know? Adam did exceptionally well too, and I’m sure he has a lot of great things ahead of him with is amaaazing voice and talent that he has. So props to both of them. I’m glad that they both sang the songs they sang for the 1st round, because those were my favorite performances they had performed during the season.
After the Tuesday show, I went backstage and got to see all the AI production crew again! Which is always great haha. I was able to go into the production room, which I was excited about because during the show we were never allowed in there haha. It was good to mingle with all of them.
All right, so Wednesday now: We started with the red carpet, which was crazy enough with all the interviews and seeing everyone around me that was there. It was an exciting show too. They had a lot of great performers like Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz, Kiss, and you probably already know who was there haha. But I really enjoyed it. Oh, and Brooke White sat next to me! It’s always good to see her haha. I actually got to hang out with her on Monday, and we got something to eat and just got to catch up. it was a really good time. After the show, I went to all the after party stuff and it was great getting to talk to a whole bunch of people. I hadn’t talked to a lot of them for a long time, and it was also neat getting to meet and talk to new people too. Someone I got to talk to was Tamyra from the first season! I was really surprised she was there, and didn’t recognize her at first because I wasn’t expecting to see her lol. It was good to talk to her and let her know I appreciated what she did for me. For those of you who don’t know, Tamyra’s performance during the 1st season top 30 was one of the most influential performances for me. I had never really WATCHED or studied people perform before, and to see her put so much soul into it was amazing to me. I’m glad I was able to thank her again. But yeah, got to talk to a lot of people haha. I got to talk to Kris Allen’s family and they were all just really really nice people. It made me even happier for Kris, because you could tell he has some great people around him. I hung out with Carly Smithson and Jason Castro afterwards, and I also hung out with Castro after my meetings last night haha. So it’s been great just catching up with everyone! I haven’t been able to talk to all of them for a while, so I was really glad to spend time with all of them. It’s definitely been an American Idol week haha.
Tonight I have a writing session after some more meetings, so hope things go well! I’m still not that great of a writer or anything, but man do I love it. Even if we don’t write a smash hit, it’s great to be able to get the experience, and feel more comfortable writing. You always learn something new with each song you do. So I’m really looking forward to it. WIsh me luck! Well I have to head out now. But I will talk to you guys later. I have some things coming up this next week and I’ll let you know about them in the next blog. If you want to keep up with me in a way that’s updated more often, you can follow me on twitter haha. I need to not spend so much time on there, but my username’s DavidArchie. Well I’m off. Goodbye!
Song for the day: Every Moment – Joy William
Just listened to the Contigo and Imagine downloads that came with the EBook update. Tears listening to 12 yr old David.
He is something else.
It’s pretty quiet here…I have a feeling we’re all devouring Dean’s latest ebook entries.
What a feast of information!! Dean gets major props for his contributions in documenting the course of David’s career!
Oh my heck!! It’s not quiet here at all!! Now that David’s latest blog is posted – thanks, Betsy!
Talk about a chatterbox…David, keep those awesome, rambling thoughts comin’ our way. Your considerable communication skills onstage are undeniable… now you becoming quite the communicator offstage as well!
Both David and Clay Aiken posted blogs today. David’s is so positive and full of win. In it, he praises his idol colleagues past and present incl. the AI production crew.
If you get the chance, you may want to read Clay’s; it’s the complete opposite. While I agree w/some of what Clay says, his blog gives a lot of insight into the type of person that he is. Can we say … bitter?
Aiken wrote. “This year, I happened to turn it during the minute that Adam Lambert was singing ‘Ring of Fire’ and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening!”
David would never publicly speak of a fellow entertainer like that.
“now you ARE becoming quite the communicator…” grrr
Good morning everyone from the land of platypus and koalas and kangaroos. Goboywonder and Angelica, Vee, the little momma from Down Under is still alive and kicking.
Haven’t forgotten you guys. I am still here, haven’t missed any of your comments and TDC articles. Just trying to rearrange my life, in the middle of separation/divorce. Just having counseling. But you know what with all news about our boy/man, life is great. His music and voice do make my day.
Now Ronaldsf congratulations. Wow pare ang galing, atty at law ka na ( Wow, my man, you are now a lawyer). Also love your article about our Idol.
Will try to comments on some of the side topics.
Sorry if these videos have been posted earlier. Just excite to share them with you. But before anything else if people have not seen these videos from Annie from Germany(AnniefromtheEU) they are to die for. She also had download of the whole concerts ( three concerts, Croydon,Leicester and Oxford).
Her request for the Croydon concerts:Make sure to watch in HD!!! Watch the volume; the audio is loud and unfortunately overmodulated. Don’t want you to ruin your ears. haha
First of all: That’s NOT me screaming but the girl who sat next to me! I shall not reveal her name, but let’s just say, she was screaming for the both of us because I couldn’t since I was filming! LOL
Sorry for the first few mins being black, I was still trying to find a better seat when David came on! LOL
This is the videos I took of David Archuleta’s performances in Croydon as opening act for McFly. Sorry the picture is black at first and shaky at other times, I had to hide the camera from security sometimes, hahaha.

sorry! Sorry for shakiness and blank black screens here and there -- we had to move seats at times. The screaming again is NOT me, but my lovely friend whose name shall remain unmentioned! LOL

sorry! Sorry for shakiness, the entire venue shook from the beat and the bassdrum LOL. This is from Leicester, where David opened for McFly on May 9th, 2009. To me this was David’s best show in the UK. We met him afterwards and he said he had so much fun, he just wanted to enjoy himself on stage and not worry about singing in key and stuff, and it showed! He was sooo on fire!! Love him!! Comments are love!

Vee, thanks so much for these videos, they are a treat for the eyes and ears! I never tire of watching David’s performances.
Sorry to hear about the challenges you’re going through right now. Hang tough, sweetie…ride out the storm and you’ll be better when the rough waters recede.
And keep listening to the healer of all wounds.
Thanks for the vids vee. Wow, annie got some good ones!
Zoe, your encouraging words to vee are so sweet.
ronaldsf- so happyyyyyy to have you back. I have missed you. I have been really good in your absence… no trouble at all. Congratulations on your graduation! Thanks for a wonderful post.
Vee, hang in there! You’ve been missed. Thanks for the U.K. vids from Annie’s site. Great to watch them again. I was up till 1 a.m. yesterday watching her Leicester vids… amaaaazing. And she’s filmed in four parts, including the intros, so you really feel like you’re there. I was only going to watch Part 1 and then … well, you know….
ronaldsf, love your idea for the double CD (acoustic & dance/pop) … David & DaveFierce FTW!
Betsy, #233, that was such a strange interview with Carly wasn’t it? Before she even came on, the DJ kept her on hold to stretch out a segment on dating tips ??… classy. Then Carly (now with an L.A. Valley Girl accent) seemed to only want to talk about David (then Adam). It was like a sneak peek into the cold, harsh world that awaits most A.I. alum, yikes.
Would someone please tell me if David is a baritone, I was not sure…thanks.
David is a tenor, I believe.
I pretty sure I read he is a tenor.
There is a new post up! Archuworld on main page, left side.
Post there so this thing won’t have to keep loading
Abrra
SB, I’ve heard him described as a tenor.
Just felt like lurking today, and enjoyed all the videos posted by vee for downloading. Thank you vee. BTW vee, I’ve been there…what you are going through. Just remember the sayings, “This too shall pass” or “That which does not kill you, makes you stronger”. Hang in there!
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David.
SB, definitely a tenor (possibly a lyric tenor).
SB–I’ve been told, by a musically inclined person, that David was tenor but has moved into the baritone range. Yes, no, maybe so, is all I can say, because it is beyond me.
Ronaldsf–your words about our favorite man are beautiful–and very insightful, I might add. And, my heartiest congrats on your gradation!! Sorry I’ve been so long getting to you on it–life keeps moving and I’m not always keeping up. Good luck with your bar studies.
zoe & abrra–thanks for the links on the book–I’m now the proud e-owner of THE BOOK.
gotta go–getting ready for a Boy Scout merit badge pow-wow tomorrow morning and I still have lots to do.
one more thing–thanks for all the links–I’m going to try the megauploads (ummm–maybe a UK and Phillipines cd or dvd will happen?–hint, hint)
okay tofan–what is a lyric tenor?
Ronald – Congratulations! What an accomplishment.
Great post….a David bio… I love that last link to that interview. I’ve watched at least 5 times now.
He works so hard and we worry about his lack of sleep, is he eating right…. yet you’ve made an excellent observation. He’s always happy and ready to share his joy with us and we’re eager to take in all he gives us.
Bebe – The problem with being that good of a performer is that everything he does feels like a performance. When Adam Lambert performs as a rock star, I don’t see a rock star. I don’t see a singer. I don’t see the next American Idol. I see an actor. I see someone pretending to be a rock star.
This is a perfect description of my impression. I stopped watching AI this season. I watched Idol Wrap and saw the weekly high lights. And week after week I saw nothing in his eyes, they looked blank to me.
Maybe David has ruined me or better yet raised the bar to my expectations in a singer and performer. I now take notice in the eyes more than anything. David doesn’t need to be singing to communicate… you just look into his eyes and you not only see but feel an indescribable connection.
So far IMO no one has what David has….
Ronald -Loved,loved, loved your post. I keep reading it over and over. Also, congrats on your law school graduation – it is a huge accomplishment. Now that you are finished with school, I expect to see you on the site a lot more, (she says slightly pleading…LOL).
I just got the update of Dean’s E-book. I really enjoyed the 1st section about his AI journey, when I read it about a year ago. This update didn’t really bring anything new to the table – I felt that everything I read could be acquired from the usual lurking that I do anyway. However, the recordings were well worth the money. I never enjoyed David’s voice as a youth as much as I do now, but these are exceptional. Does anyone know how to change the recordings into MP3′s so I can download them on my I-pod?
Followup on a comment from waaay back…
Bebereader #30, I really like that quote: “The problem with being that good of a performer is that everything he does feels like a performance. When Adam Lambert performs as a rock star, I don’t see a rock star. I don’t see a singer. I don’t see the next American Idol. I see an actor. I see someone pretending to be a rock star.”
I have only tuned in on YouTube a few times this season, and I think Adam is a brilliant singer and performer, but yeah I also feel a little cold watching him compared to watching David. I’m not sure if this is the right word, but I feel that Adam’s facial expressions are “affected,” or pre-thought-through. Not my cuppa tea. Also, while I’m not anti-scream (like some of his detractors are), I am not PRO-scream. In the context of AI, his vocal pyrotechnics in one of those songs on finale night screamed of (pun intended) “Hey, look what I can do! Aaah! Aaah!”
Again, I like Adam, great guy… and he should have won AI. Best voice this season imo, and I’m going to buy whatever he puts out. But he’s not a musician the way David is. (And yes, very few are…)
I hope Adam gets the benefit of a good songwriting and production team for his
