“It’s a Show Where People Call In and Vote”
Or, The Moment I Became a Fan

Few people know of my interest in David’s music. For one thing, I usually anticipate their negative reaction to my interest in a singer who was twice a television reality show contestant.
The day after the Season 8 finale, friends with an interest in popular culture mentioned they had watched the episode. We talked about the show’s results. I questioned why Adam did not win even though the show itself and entertainment media promoted him so heavily. Did voters on the East Coast have an unfair advantage? Did Adam’s sexual orientation dissuade voters in more conservative parts of the country? Did some voters have an unfair advantage because their cell phone provider allowed them to vote multiple times at once?
I casually mentioned my disappointment about Cook’s win last year. I shared my belief that American Idol strategically positions their hoped-for winner through song choices, media coverage, and other tactics. I told one person that I no longer watch American Idol after realizing how heavily it is produced. He dismissed my conspiracy theories and asked why I even cared. “It’s a show where people call in and vote,” he said.
It is intriguing to see the different and often dismissive reactions to both American Idol and David among people I know. It’s sad to admit, but I even remind myself not to internalize these attitudes. Recently, I attended a dinner party and was pleasantly surprised to find that an acquaintance was a native of the Murray, Utah area. Without thinking, I mentioned that I followed a young singer from there. Naturally, he asked the singer’s name. I stammered out David’s name because I felt embarrassed that I had watched American Idol.
It’s certainly true that shows like American Idol are less scripted and cheaper to produce than a news program or made-for-TV movie with a famous guest star or two. The proliferation of reality shows in this current weak economy attests to their affordability and appeal to audiences already immersed in celebrity culture.
At the end of the day, most reality shows will not stand the test of time. These shows are examples of disposable consumer culture. For most contestants, American Idol and other programs are steps toward a larger goal of getting public exposure for singing, acting, or modeling careers. However, many American Idol contestants will probably never have a long-term career, or even a short public one. The entertainment business is a harsh animal that spits out the current Hot Thing for the Next Big One.
Although many reality show contestants will come and go, I believe that David will stand the test of time. I did not discover him until late in Season 7 because I stopped watching the show after Season 4. However, I was immediately intrigued by David’s demeanor and voice that communicates depths of emotion and past pain that we are now just beginning to understand.
Discovering David

The moment
I am sure that all of us can point to specific moments that clinched our desire to follow David’s burgeoning career. For me, that moment was the split-second look on David’s face after he finished singing, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” on Top Two Night on May 20, 2008.
His face bespoke emotional and physical exhaustion from complete submission to the music. I can honestly say that this moment was one of the most moving images I have ever seen on television. It was raw, passionate, and utterly real. I knew right then that this shy, diminutive boy was strong.
I found later that David had confessed to his vocal coach, Dean Kaelin, earlier that day that his gut instinct told him Cook would win. Still, David decided that no matter what, he would go out with self-respect and the knowledge that he truly tried his best.
In that fleeting moment, that look on David’s face and its projected vulnerability in front of millions clinched my position as a lifelong fan.
What was the moment for you?
–Freofan

FREO -- it is nice to go back to these moments. May be heartbreaking for some but I was most proudest of him that night. Win or lose, I knew then and there that I was a goner for this young artist. On top of being a remarkable talent and magnetic personality, he showed grit, courage and grace under immense pressure that night. For that he got my respect. He also showed that he was not going down w/o a fight. For that he got my heart.
But I became a fan much, much, much earlier… waaaaaaaaaay back Star Search days. At that time, Star Search was being shown in Manila because the young boy he was competing with and who became the Champions of champions eventually, was a Filipino (an MJ sound-alike).
The white soul from Utah had me at “Whoooo’s laav, lovvviiin’ you-ouuuu”
So it makes me smile no-end when I watch him now:
TOUR REHEARSALS WITH NEW BAND

or try from here:
Lord Have Mercy Freofan! My ODD buddy in Canada (hi OJS!)and I call that ‘moment’ FINALE FACE. There is nothing like it and no words to fully explain how it reached through the TV and strangled us. If you were not already a pile of goo from the performance, that face should have been enough to finish the job. That was a defining moment in Idol history. I have watched every season, except for season 8, and that was it for me. He is the best thing to ever grace that stage.
I think my moment was “When You Believe” even though after “Shop Around” I knew there was something unbelievable about him, and “Imagine” of course was beyond anything I expected. But something broke in my head and my heart during WYB and I don’t know why. It was my undoing, and I haven’t quite recovered yet! I knew then that there was no turning back, and I went into full-blown ODD panic mode. I had to hear him sing every week, he could not go home!
I have learned to compartmentalize this ODD now, to know when to share it and when to bury it. Life is good.

Oh FunnyGirl (waves) how I LOVE finale face !!!!!! There is no face like finale face.
Great article Freofan…..
Have a wonderful time in Del Mar all those attending.
Hi TOfan…. thanks for the congrats BTW !
Good morning on show day everyone…enjoyed your article Freofan…..
SF…if you are checking in here, “you’ve got mail”.
Freo -- I can relive those Idol moments over and over, and I often go back to one of the videos from the show. But my moment occurred when David sang “Shop Around.” I was just enthralled with him at that point, and whenever there was mention of the title “Ballad Boy” in the press or blogs, I wanted to shout, “But don’t you remember Shop Around?” LOL
That performance should have been an indication of what might happen later -- of his ability to take any song and make it something special, that he would dance and groove to the music on stage. We all know now what David will do in a live performance….we probably should have known after this one performance:
Marlie,
He told us and made us understand! The right hand is quite a storyteller.
Abrra
Great post, Freofan, thank you for sending me back to that moment. How could I ever forget it? Like everyone here, it changed my life.
I’ve told this story before, so forgive me, I’ll try to be quick.
My moment was also at Shop Around, marlie7. I hadn’t been watching A.I. at all. I’d just gotten home after the funeral of one of my closest and dearest friends. I had never felt so empty, so sad, so dead.
I was flipping channels just to zone out. There was David. I couldn’t stop watching and listening. At first, it was just an objective appreciation of his stunning musicality and vocal talent. I had no idea how old he was or anything about him.
Note by note my sadness lifted. I was stunned by how much better I felt. That I could feel at peace, even hopeful. How could that be? That’s impossible, I thought. It’s just a song. Just a good singer. What just happened?
TOfan, Those words, “What just happened?” You said it all, my friend. How many of us have said that more than just the first time we heard him. How about at the end of his Idol set, after the first solo concert, after watching him give a particularly good interview or say hilarious things to a DJ.
Yeah, “What Just Happened?”
Hi everyone…I don’t normally post here but the subject matter has always intrigued me because I don’t know how to adequately describe what happened when “the moment” arrived.
I had never watched Idol. Too many kid things to do in the evening and too many long work hours. One day my sister sent me a Youtube link (I didn’t even have an account at that point), which was entitled “This Kid is Amazing”. It was the Shop Around performance. And it was the full interview before, the judges comments, conversation with Ryan, etc. So of course the confident stage presence, the snapping of the fingers, the moving to the music on the stage and, of course, the last performance note was epic, but the fun and ease in which he delivered his performance made me really take notice. So much so, that I had it on repeat for about 45 minutes on YouTube. And his sweetness afterwards, thanking the crowd, his reaction to the adoption comment, his perma-smile. Everything made me think this young man is not just a performer…he has the IT factor. And he still does!
I watched faithfully after that and then the final “moment” occurred in the finale, with “In This Moment”. David says he is not competitive, but I am extremely doubtful of that given what I witnessed that night. He had come such a long way! The ease and fun was replaced by the raw emotion, which he left in puddles on the stage. He was still the total package, but different, and I knew I was a gonner. I had no idea how to do it, but I know I had to follow this young man in his career.
Thanks TDC for letting me express this again. This is a really good time for us to get back to David basics.
And hello to TOFan!!! See you in Chicago, Pittsburg or Atlantic City perhaps??
Wow, ojs & pastel, a virtual Cdn convention! lol *waves flag* See you in AC, Pastel! All this talk of finale “moments,” I think I need to revisit a few….
Good afternoon all -
Freo -- apologies…. I won’t get to read your post until tomorrow to give it my full attention because today I’m on my way to….
DEL MAR!!!!!
To hear the “VOICE”…so until tomorrow.
abrra and bebe, you have mail.
Have fun, djafan! Scream a couple of times for me
Guys it me again the little vee from Sydney. First of all I got an email from Mikesd so hopefully we can make some arrangement about LA tickets. Mikesd thanks in advance and of course enjoy the concert today with Liz. Shout some extras for me please.
Okay for the topic,Freo again thanks for this, it is reminiscing one of the times that it is too painful for me but at the same time making me realise that life is too short. That there are some chapters in our lives that has to end to be able to begin a new and a better life ( especially for my two children). First I heard of David’s voice, 25 January 2008 David’ audition , singing “Waiting on the World to Change”.
“Waiting on the World to Change”.
Then the hollywood week
heaven by Bryan Adams
I told myself here is this 16 year old boy and he is making me rethink of my life.
I am hooked for life then Shop around
then finally Imagine
Then even when I went to the Philippines for a vacation in April 2008, I still have to listen to the latest Idol shows so as not to missed David’s singing.
And now, 17 months since 25 January 2008 , I am still on high with my ODD. But wait, to top it all, I am going to see him LIVE , UP FRONT AND PERSONAL on 17 July. Yes from Sydney,Australia to LA,USA. Wish it was his solo concert but it is better than nothing. I know it will be one of the highlights of my David’s journey and it will be memorable because I will be sharing it with some good e-friends here in TDC. So Mikesd let’s work out those tickets please, I am in your debt for the rest of my life.
Better go now and cook some pancakes for my little boy’s breakfast. Hope I can join in the cellcast for the Del Mar concert. if not, youtube videos will be okay until July 17 ( am I crazy or not)
Sorry for this long comment as usual, apology for this crazy woman
Luv you all
#14 vee
Though I don’t know you, I’m extremely happy for you.
RE: “…apology for this crazy woman.” Vee, you’re not crazy, just excited.
In response to: “What was the moment for you?”
I never watched the Idol auditions. After watching bits and pieces of the first 2wks of the actual show, I was discussing Idol w/a coworker. I didn’t know the names of the contestants, but I told her that I REALLY liked 2 contestants -- the little guy who sang Shop Around and the young guy who sang Imagine. My coworker laughed so hard because I didn’t know David by name nor realize that the same person sang Imagine & Shop Around. Guess it was the difference in his hair style.
The moment for me was “Heaven.” Love at first sight, “Hello, gorgeous,” and all that. Haven’t turned back since.
SO, I just left the reception where I met rascal, dfLiz, vermeer, refnaf’s daugher and miked. I met refnaf a while back in Albany--shades of Northern Lights--ah, the memories!!!
Met rascal’s mom and her bf from California too. Reception was on the Pacific Ocean edge with the sun setting -- quite gorgeous and only David music playing courtesy of rascal--a beautiful and heart warming gathering. TDF!!!!
Load’s of fun. Meeting everyone face to face is always so much more than what one imagines. Life is grand!
Going to fairgrounds for show in a couple of minutes.
Hugs and Warm Wishes to all.
Kizzi -- I know you are gone, but thank you for sharing the pre-concert party with us. We’ll be looking forward to a full report
You always do those so well.
Thanks, Kizzi, for sharing. Sounds so cool!
It’s kind of quiet in here today. I had to come out of lurkdom to say that I really love this place and I hope that all the excitement from the last few days doesn’t tear this fanbase apart. You are all such great fans of David and I love coming here to read your intelligent posts. I have read both sides of this issue and I’m on David’s side. He will make his decision and I will abide by it.
Now, Freo, I love this post. I have gone back to all his idol performances often. They make me so happy to watch and bring so many emotions to surface. I was so taken by this young man when he sang Heaven and said he was going to make them understand. Wow, that made me pay attention. When I saw the backup singer wiping tears from her eyes, I realized I was doing the same thing. I was rooting for him to make it and when he sang Shop Around?…I had a smile on my face so big that my friend said, ‘You’ve got it bad!” Yup, I was a goner from then on. Couldn’t miss a week…on pins and needles for months.
David has my heart and I will always be there for him. I’m the only one in my family who “gets him”, but they will always get him every Christmas whether they like it or not. haha! I for one am looking forward to that Christmas album no matter who is producing it! It will be fabulous.
sweetonda: I think we will all come back together for the thing that brought us together in the first place -- our love of David. If there is one thing I am sure of, it is that no matter what anyone’s stance is on the issues that have plagued the fanbase these last few days, each person here (and at other sites across the net) loves David wholeheartedly. We differ on this issue in our approach, our perceptions, our hurts and how we deal with them. But David is the tie that binds.
Marlie, I’m praying that is true. Thanks!
While waiting for DelMar vids — isn’t it nice to watch David on MTV
KIZZI -- thanks for the pre-concert update. Great, great for you guys to meet face-to-face
have a blast guys!
While waiting for DelMar vids — isn’t it nice to watch David on MTV
TMH playing now -- woo-hoo!!!
KIZZI -- thanks for the pre-concert update. Great, great for you guys to meet face-to-face

MTV? Do tell.
Oh btw, happy father’s day to all the lovely gentlemen and single mothers here!
Going out now to treat my 79yo-dad for brunch. CYL
Sweetonda, David’s a sweetheart, and we, his fans, are deeply invested. We can’t help but express that investment in whatever form it takes. I do agree with Marlie here (the first time today? haha!) and think, once this all dies down, we’ll get back to David and his music.
Marlie!
We are fools for David, yes?
Haha! I grabbed the remote and put on MTV and no David. Then I realized JR is watching Sunday MTV on Sunday morning.
Cellcast soon hosted by FOD.

I have to say BIG Thank YOU to all for the wonderful articles, posts, comments and updates for the past one year or so.
I don’t post very often but will come here daily without fail.
I used to watch American Idol on and off when I have the time but there isn’t any singer that will captured my attention to follow through to the finale.
For AI7, David catpured my attention straight away because he can really SING and THE VOICE !! The MOMENT for me was when he sang Imagine. I just could not take my eyes off him and hold my breath the entire time. It was then that the ODD started big time. Because of the time difference, we could only get a delay telecast but I would search through the internet and read live blog to see how his performance was for that night ! During my lunch break, I would tried to watch the posted utube videos of this performance. Haha those were the days !
The connection to David’s voice and music is so powerful that it completely changed my taste in music. I grew up listening to Mandarin pop music, I dont listen to English music other than the very popular pop artists who had the top hit songs and I listen to them because they always play on the radio. I have never own any English pop album of any artist but I had my collections of Mandarin albums. With David, could you believe it that I had 3 copies of his album and one copy of the Japanese version which I got my friend to buy when she was there.
With David on the show last year, I listened only to him and nobody else. My friends were amazed and could not believe how obsessed I have become . Even I am amazed myself, I tried listening to other singers but its not the same any more, I just could not explain it myself too ! It’s now getting better, I am starting to listen to my Mandarin songs again.
David is such an amazing person and my wish for him is to be happy and hope that he will be very successful for all the hard work that he has put in. I was very fortunate to have seen him and hear him sing when he was here the last time and I believe that he will come back again ! If not, I promise myself I will go for his concert(s) next year !
HG: I love it when we are in agreement LOL
David is just hilarious on his tweets: About 2 hours ago:
“Wow! There are elephants just around the corner!”
HG, Heaven did it for me too. When I watch back even now I get a lump in my throat. What David did with that song was so incredible to me because he really did make me feel it. I’ve never looked back because he kept doing that to me for his entire season. He continues to do that, and that is why I keep coming back for more….
hello guys are people listening to cellast at FOD

The screams on the cellcast were deafening -- I think David got lots of love tonight.
David’s tweet . Sent out as soon as he finished his set
Woo what a great show tonight at Del Mar!! It felt so good! Thanks everyone for coming!! Such a great way to kick-off!
Back from the concert. My blackberry wasn’t able to send videos…still having issues.
Opened w/ALTNOY. Different mix of songs. Was expecting “Angels” and then, there was “Imagine” but not the whole song…beautiful…that was the first song I heard David sing and it was such an unexpected treat to hear it live tonight!!!
A wonderful Davidism—after David introduced the band he said “hello band!” LOL
Lots of people taking videos so I am sure they will be up soon.
We got one, Kizzi!

Update 31: “just spotted Lupe, amber, jazzy, and iCarly girls side stage jumping. its hard texting while jumping ahhhh.”
http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/music/general/view.bg?articleid=1180135
Excerpts:
Golden Archuleta
‘Idol’ star living the ‘American’ dream
By Lauren Carter
But Archuleta is still getting used to his celebrity. The Utah teen say it seems “really weird” to have his own music videos. He was sure only “30 people” would show up to see him on tour.
“There are definitely still some things that take some getting used to,” he said. “When I’m going to events where there are other people that are musicians and artists, I just feel so out of place. It’s like, ‘Why am I here with these people? I don’t belong here.’
“And the fans are always interesting because it’s like you never actually thought there’d be people who’d be having your face on their T-shirt and holding signs up for you and coming to all the shows and yelling, ‘David!’ That’s always weird. That part still seems unrealistic, because it’s like, why would people be doing that for me?”
When Archuleta isn’t busy being a pop star, he’s a surprisingly average teen. He spends time hanging out with friends and family, practicing piano, listening to music, even visiting old folks in his neighborhood. He’s never had a girlfriend, but feels the time will come when a relationship will enter the mix. And he’s a recovering Twitter addict.
“I felt like Twitter was taking over my life for a little bit,” he said, “but I’ve gotten better.”
In addition to his 45-city tour with Lovato, Archuleta’s hard at work on his second album, due out early next year, as well as a Christmas release slated for fall. And, like most teens, he’s still searching for his identity -- musically, anyway.
“I just want to really define my sound as an artist and as a writer,” he said, “because I still don’t have this absolute sound that I can say, ‘This is my sound and this is who I am.’ I want to figure out how to tie all the little things I like in music together so people can say, ‘That’s David Archuleta’s sound. That’s who he is.’ It seems like with ‘American Idol,’ the fans are so diverse and I don’t really want to exclude a certain age group. I don’t want to be teenybop David Archuleta forever, but I’d like to be able to relate to as many people as I can.”
“just spotted Lupe, amber, jazzy, and iCarly girls side stage jumping. its hard texting while jumping ahhhh.”
Love this! Jump ya’ll.
Imagine!!!

I simply love this young man! I do, I really, really do!
Hi everyone! David was wonderful! David was glorious! David was superb! The Voice was magnificent! He was happy, full of energy and gave us some surprises..Stand By Me and Imagine. I did miss SOT, though. Was it worth the trip? OMG! YES! Anyone who has the opportunity to see David live should most certainly make every effort to do so. I spoke to Mike K. after the concert and asked him how long David’s set would be for the Demi Tour. He said at least 45 minutes and about nine songs. Oh and the band was pretty good..but you know as much as I liked Eli & Alex, I don’t go to David’s concerts to see the band anyway. But I do like Mike and am very glad he is still with David, even with his nose ring! Honest! hahaha!
I wasn’t able to attend rascal’s pre-concert party and I was so bummed, but family obligations take precedent, however…I met the very handsome rascal, his very beautiful mom, and the famous, beautiful, & gracious Kizzy at the concert! And of course all the other TDC’ers, Liz, refnaf, vermeer, quiteblanc, djafan, gemzone, mikesd, and so many others from the other fansites, from all over the country and Canada! WOW! It was great! One other thing was that Lupe & David’s sisters were there supporting David and to see him off on another long & grueling tour schedule. It made me very happy for David just to know he had family there tonight
Now I have to suffer for another month before I see him in concert again. As I said, if I can see him sing live at least once a month for the rest of my life, oh what a great “rest of my life” it would be! I would want to live forever!
Good night all! I know it’s 3:30AM est, but it’s only 12:30 here. David may not even be in bed yet, so for David…
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Watch over him, protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his Archangels do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he’s weary. Give him the stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey. Keep David and and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born. And please Lord, give us, David’s forever fans, the wisdom to know when and how to do right by David. Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests. May his positive and good Karma continue to attract those with positive and good Karma! May he continue to encounter goodwill and happiness! May he continue to be healthy and strong wherever his journey leads him. Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray. Amen
David, hope you have a good night’s sleep & sweet dreams. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts! We will always love you madly! REMEMBER, if you are ever in need of help, tweet us an SOS and your Archangels will be there in a flash!
Contigo siempre con amor!

Freofan, thanks for the very nice article. What was the moment for me? It was when David sang Heaven during the hollywood week. I strongly believe that he would be the winner. And then there was Imagine…. I met some Archies here in Hong Kong and we can’t stop talking about him for 5 hours. They (2 of them) met David in USA and I wonder when I could have the chance of meeting him personally. I admire him and my 3 young kids love him very much. I am glad he is gaining success now. Hope for more success in the future. Every night I watch his vids from youtube (over and over again) and go to his sites (and fansites) to read articles about him to get my “Archie fix.” Am I crazy or not?

Jackryan, you da bomb!!! Thanks for finding and posting all these terrific videos. I got up early to wrap presents for hubby for Father’s Day, but I can’t tear myself away from these -- David was AWESOME!!!! To heck with all other matters this morning -- ODD must be satisfied!
SF -- thanks for reporting before turning in, and so glad you were able to meet up with so many TDCers. Bet you had a heck of a time falling asleep!!! I thought I caught David waving to you -- am I not right!?!?
I didn’t plan on seeing the summer show because David is playing in my neck of the woods a week before my son’s wedding and there’s so much going on, but after reading SF’s report and knowing that I’ll get to hear THE VOICE for 45 minutes, what the heck…I’ll get there somehow!
Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth to Freofan’s fun trip down memory lane. For me the defining moment of my surrender was Shop Around. I fell for that boy hook, line and sinker.
I often go back to watching that performance, seeing his reaction to the praise from the judges and the playful banter with Ryan. He seems soooo much younger in his demeanor…not so much on stage, but during the interview part. Almost like a different personality to me…can’t really explain it. Anyway, little did any of us know what was in store!!
Vee, thanks for the site for the article from the Boston Herald. You should all read the entire review… it was thoughtful, respectful and praiseworthy. Not at all like that inane interview from that idiotic DJ at the radio station….geesh, what a waste of David’s time that was.
Sooo happy to know that Lupe and the girls were able to attend the show! All their love and support to envelope him after a very difficult week. Also heard that David spent time at his aunt’s home in the area. Good stuff!
I saw these on IDF:

Great post Freo!
I’d lost my fascination with Idol after the second season and if it wasn’t for the writer’s strike that was going on at the time I’m not sure if I would have discovered David.
When I tuned in to the Top 24 show and saw clips of David’s auditions followed by Shop Around, I became helplessly addicted, so I guess you could say that was my “moment” but that moment has been followed by so many more and he continues to deliver the goods.
He’s so addicting I’m surprised he’s not illegal.
One thing I must say before heading out for Father’s Day. David is soooo giving of himself. No, his “Imagine” performance at Del Mar wasn’t perfection, but I absolutely love the gesture he made in offering us his Imagine performance on keyboard. He must have known how we’ve been hungering for this version, and he put it right in after the crowd-pleasing ATM. Always thinking of us and doing what he can to share of himself.
Love him, love him, LOVE HIM. As I said, he had me at “Heaven,” when I first ever saw or heard him, and I haven’t turned back since.
It will be interesting to see if David sends a Father’s Day shout out via twitter today, the way he did on Mother’s Day. Just saying, since he’s already tweeted this morning.
Signing off until next time! Have a great Sunday and holiday, everyone!
Love this post…and funny because it’s something I was always thinking about writing about myself, so I’m glad Freo did!
I recall it exactly, as I’m sure everyone does (solidifying David in some significant category along with some other historic moments, usually not happy ones…the “where were whens”…)
It was a progression leading up to “the moment” for me.
Audition-- Immediate reaction: “OK…THIS kid can sing…he’s the real deal, a singer’s singer”, and one to watch.” I also got another “vibe” I couldn’t explain that said…he’s different…his demeanor…hm..can’t wait to see more.
Hollywood…there he is again…wowwwww…what a voice!
Cute too. So genuinely likeable.
So by first night of show…I was waitin’(for the world to change
) Not only was I NOT disappointed…but jolted, (not that I could articulate it all then), “Whoa, this kid has more to him than a great voice, singing heartfelt songs…there is a real musicality” surprising us with this song choice. Great choice of song after WOTWTC & Heaven….comes out and not only shows us he can belt out an upbeat, soulful tune too…but the
cute, young, heartthrob to be…picks a sort of coming of age song he can charm us with.
And charm doesn’t quite explain it does it?! I honestly felt a collective “glom on” to him from the audience’s response that night. We were all “stuck like glue” after that.
But to back up….I was waiting to see “what that kid was gonna do”…and froze in front of my t.v. set with my mouth open. (Have not shut it since.)
The exact ‘moment’ for me…when he crouched down to reach for that “a-RRRRRRounnnnnnnnnnd!” That’s where I felt a jolt and moved in a way I couldn’t believe. And then he looked up with that kinda adorable expectant smile…which would become signature for him…and I said out loud to my tv, as I cheered …”This kid sings his guts out!!! “What a voiiiiiice!!”
And what became my mantra, my same spontaneous response after every performance and judging was “I just love this kid…I LOVE him!”….and it all hasn’t changed…still reacting that way…still amazed by it all!
And to Freo’s point….DLTSGDOM was a culmination of who he solidified himself to be to me throughout the season…and still he stunned me and literally took my breath away with that performance. I too cannot get enough of seeing that breath he expels at the end, and the sheer exhaustion from this young, talented guy …singing his heart and soul out.
He really looked like he could cry, but you are right…underneath is great emotional strength.
Music is clearly his passion, and to that end, he’s the most devoted, hard-working young singer in the business.
I’ve never seen anyone so connected to the music he sings…he goes to “a place” I’ve never seen anyone go to…and THAT is what people, I think, respond to.
I’m behind David and his dream, for life.
Tks for the article! Alas, again a too long post from me, but owell!!
oops that’s “Where were YOU whens!”
oh…and….did I mention…
utterly inappropriate 12 yr old fangirl moment from otherwise sane adult coming on…
I’M GOING TO SEE DAVID TONIGHT IN HARTFORRRRRRD!!
(heart pounds!)
…dragging best girlfriend who doesn’t quite get it …ok…not really at all(frustrating)…didn’t watch Season 7…but agreed to go when he peaked her curiosity on his return performance on AI this year..it’s a start.
My “got it” moment-the auditions were the hook, Shop Around the line, and Imagine the sinker. This crazy amazing wonderful ride we have all been on since defies my own personal logic. And after last night vids, oh my David. As JR said, “I simply love this young man! I do, I really, really do!” So redundant, but I don’t know how else to say it.
Zoe, go, go go! My son is getting married next weekend, yes, it is madness! But I so hope you can steal a few hours for yourself to see David!
amb4dja #86 -- you are the best. Have fun tonight! Give David extra love (and screams) for us here. And your best friend,…”it’s a start”, well, she doesn’t know it yet, but I suspect it will also be…”a finish.” She too will be a goner.
Thanks to all of you for the videos. He just blows me away time and time again.
And thank you TDC.
on seeing David last night… WOW! I don’t think it matters how many times you have seen David in person, in song…each time is like the first. From the minute he bounds out on the stage to that last thank you, he is amazing! Huge energy, huge vocals and his inimitable David “style”. I don’t care what the threads are, what the comments are, good or bad, it all comes back to this. David and his beautiful life altering music! Makes me want to try to figure out a way to get to a few more performances…
Great seeing everyone last night at the pre show cocktail party at L’Auberge! Rascal, you rascal! Thanks to both DavidfanLiz and Rascal for organizing. There is something about having a cocktail overlooking the ocean knowing that in a short time you will be seeing David! SF missed you there but great to see you at the show. Had a relaxing “debriefing” (Davidtalk) after the show back at L’Auberge with Rascal, DavidfanLiz, Vermeer and my real life David (my partner). It is pretty wild to attend a concert and see a good thirty or so people that you know or have seen before!
What a great night… THANK YOU DAVID ARCHULETA!!
amb4dja -- what a great read! Oh my heck, I totally agree — that moment “…when he crouched down to reach for that “a-RRRRRRounnnnnnnnnnd!” Man oh man, he took my breath away. I was gobsmacked. And I continue to be amazed with what he delivers, each and every time he steps out on that stage.
emmiegirl -- CONGRATS TO YOU, TOO! Such an exciting time for our families!! I’ve already given the DJ a copy of Zero Gravity to play at the reception. Gotta use every opportunity to expose David’s music whenever and wherever I can!
Oh thanks JR! So many wonderful videos to wake up to from last night! The videos have great qualities too. I love how close David seems to be!
And watching his eyes in the YEDL video, I died. He can really work his eyes.
freo, it was the same moment for me too. Going down the memory lane, first I read about David’s Imagine, saw it and was awed. Then I searched for David in You Tube, saw his Shop Around and was wowed. When I saw how he gave it his all during DLTSGDOM, I was so moved that my guts were wrenching. I was so happy for David and proud of him that I jumped up and down and screamed and earned a look from my teenage daughter. That moment sewed it up for me.
I seriously doubt that anybody’s final performance can ever top David’s. It was not about showmanship. It was about pure emotional power coming full force through the Voice.
amb4dja, WOW…from your words, to EXACTLY what happened to me when I was struck by The David Lightning!
Spot-on read…thanks!
P.S. David was certainly on a musical high last night. Maybe Lupe and the girls had something to do with that. Whatever the reason, I pray MANY fans were Archu-amazed enough to support his career.
JR -- thanks for turning my paltry text-only links into YT screens… remind me again please, about the “v” thingy?!
fandaforever…. #75, yes, a few more, here’s You Can:
Sorry it’s a bit shaky, it’s hard to hold my arms in the air that long!! (I better work out before the next concert!)
Good morning! I know I missed mentioning so many other great fans of David I met last night on my mini recap. I was still on a David-HIGH and so please forgive me OK? (highervibe and of course Lily & river and so many others).
Oh..count my brother & his lovely wife as new fans! They can’t understand why David didn’t win AI..My bro said you can feel how much David loves performing live for his fans. They thoroughly enjoyed the concert.
Off to do the tourist thing. Beautiful city, San Diego…but David is on the other side of the country now, so it’s not as beautiful today as if was when he was here! I am so pathetic!
Have a great day!
I’m loving hearing all about each of your experiences last night. Got to do the Father’s Day thing, so I’ll have to reread and relisten and rewatch the vids later tonight….while waiting for more from Connecticut!
New post! Yeah!
Marlie #77 You’re awesome! I was hoping for a matrix of the summer tours--thank you.
Abrra--I owe you soooo big time!!! {{:):)}} x1,000,000
I am literally light headed from these vids. Seriously. OH LORDY… SBM, Barriers, YEDL…Lord Have MERCY!
Rascal, I just gotta hear your take on up-close Barriers, YEDL, SBM… oh everything. But LORDY LORDY LORDY.. Oh, but he has hizzef some mad, MAD Make-Me-Weak-In-The-Knees SKILLS, BABAY! And I haven’t even watched alllll the vids yet!
Freo, I remember back at Rickey’s finally LEAPING out of the ODD closet and jumping in with both feet when I couldn’t STIFLE MYSELF a moment longer over “Shop Around!” It was long after the performance when I did, but a rousing discussion was underway about Shop Around and there was just no holding me back. lol
Even though I’d caught WOTWTC and Heaven, it was literally from another room while multi-tasking, with my back turned, and so over my shoulder, even (we have an open floor plan) and YES, boyhowdy I moz DEF noticed him, even in those compromised circumstances. And I DO remember thinking… “whoa, what a cutie pie” “whoa, he can SANG” “Whoa, Imma ENJOY watching AI THIS season…” Of couse, since then I’ve wached X-Factor’s SUBLIME vids of WOTWTC and Heaven a bazillion times…and am as blown away and in LOVE with them as everything else, but as it actually went down for me, those were not as prominent at the time … But HONEY, when he came boppin’ out on the stage and deliverd that Shop Around… Lord Have Moicy, that was my FIRST “WHAT JUST HAPPENED” moment! PHEW!!! That was my first taste of the Almighty Archuleta Hunkerdown and MANOMANOMANOMANNN that “Arrrrrrrrooooooouuuunnnnnnnnd!” nearly put me in the ICU! I could NOT believe my eyes and ears! I distinctly remember my jaw on the floor. I distinctly remember saying, “OH, MY GOD, HOW DID HE DO THAT???”
As I’ve said many times, it was after Shop Around that I ran to the internet like a freaking mad woman searcing for every little archu_scrap I could lay my mouse on … never to return. I must have watched the YouTube of Shop Around about 150 times when I first glomped onto it. I hyperventilate just thinking about it. lol
And “Imagine” after that. Well. So glad I do not have to explain to THIS group. I was destroyed for life.
And the rest, my friends, … is history. *THUD!*
{{{SF}}} Woot!
OH goodie… and rascal’s take is on the new thread! woot!
Whew! Check-out time rapidly approaching… last vid uploaded:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzeir92McAQ
OMG, so ***FANTASTIC*** to meet so many TDCers last night!! Love, love, LOVED it. Posts and comments later… gotta go now.
Hugs everybody!
Guys, I created a DelMar page to house all the videos in a more proper location. Also, have arranged the videos according to the order of the set list. Check the link below
http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/del-mar-june-20-2009/
MARLIE -- perhaps a link in the main page of the 09 Summer Tour would be needed?
Love this post Freo
amb4dja#84 -- so agree with all you said & especially this… “I’ve never seen anyone so connected to the music he sings…he goes to “a place” I’ve never seen anyone go to…and THAT is what people, I think, respond to.”
Also was lost on how to express the defining moment till you wrote this….. “It was a progression leading up to “the moment” for me.” EXACTLY!!! A progression that goes on and on.
angelofdja#91 -- whoa, I just posted exactly the same response to amb4dja, as you did 12 hrs prior. Kinda weird. Did not copy yours -- honestly!
peru#90 -- “I seriously doubt that anybody’s final performance can ever top David’s. It was not about showmanship. It was about pure emotional power coming full force through the Voice.” That’s what it is for me -- love the full force emo power. Been listening/watching vids then sighing all nite. Thanx to all who loaded their videos for our viewing pleasure.
Love the Barriers performance -- even with all his cute (somewhat juvie) gestures to “keep hitting this wall, it’s never gonna fall”, “getting stronger”, “if I don’t get into my car”; then comes the “full force emo power”. Just melts…….
oh & the abrupt, somewhat rude intro as he’s commenting on the first summer concert. His adorable expression like uhhhh, hah, then starts singing. Only he could ease the minds of the audience whose attention must be wrapped up into what he’s saying. And I too, repeat JR’s mantra -- “I simply love this young man! I do, I really, really do!”
Thanx JR for finding all the vids.
Vee -- so happy and excited for your venture to the US. Wish it would have been to Seattle. Would’ve been fun to meet yah!
that was somewhat rude band intro…… Not David, never!
Terrific post, Freofan, including all the twists and turns!
It looks like we’re just about finished with this post but I couldn’t let it go. There is something very satisfying about documenting ones ‘when did you become a fan?’ thoughts on paper.
I thought David was adorable the first time I saw him on “American Idol”! When he started to sing WFTWTC, there was an unidentifiable quality in his voice that captivated me immediately and it hasn’t stopped. My husband heard it too because he walked into the room, wanting to know who just sang because he said that person was the winner! I kid you not!
I couldn’t miss one episode of AI that season. Hearing David sing became an addiction for me from Day One. Then, when I heard him speak with so much compassion and humility about his family, and when he continued to sing songs that showed raw emotion, and when he refused to choose the side he felt he belonged on (safe or going home), I knew that I’d be on this delicious journey for the rest of my life!
It’s one of the best rides I’ve ever taken!
Great post, Freofan!
For me, unquestionably, he had me with “Imagine”. I was raised on the Beatles, heartbroken when they disbanded, thrilled when I heard new material from the former Beatles in the 70s, but done in by John’s ode to his idea of a better world. I’d heard countless covers of “Imagine” in the years since and didn’t like any of them. And when Ryan introduced David and said “the song is ‘Imagine’” I literally screamed “Noooooo!” at my TV. By the end of that abbreviated version, I was a mess. And I was a fan for life. Yes, I was impressed with “Shop Around” the previous week, but when he took ownership of a song that I thought no one but John Lennon should ever be heard singing, he had me.
Had to delurk for this one, just wish I’d seen it sooner!
I love reading the stories of people’s “big moments” of introduction to David. It’s one of those things I never tired of. Glad the sidebar shows when someone posts over here….lovely stories, heart-rending stories, epic stories.
fandaforeverti48 wish I can stay a bit longer in the US and visit a few more States and meet a few more of you guys. But don’t worry, I will be back. probably next time visit Seattle or even the States near it.
Marlie just like you I love to read all of these stories. If possible have this post put up permanently on the side bar so if we have new visitor we can ask them to sign up by writing his/her story if they want to. Only a suggestion.
like a bonding experience
Great idea, Vee! I’ll see what we can do to figure out how to make that work. thanks!
