Life Before Autotune
More About the Ballad
Rascal’s “Being Balladeer” post got me thinking about a lot of things, such as: What is a ballad? Who are today’s male balladeers? Has the definition of the ballad changed over time? Will the ballad ever make a return to popular culture? I set out to do some research and found lots of information about classic ballads. Then I tried searching “male balladeers 2009″ and, guess what? Almost nothing.
Only this from 2006: http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/entertainment/2006/05/23/2006-05-23_the_crying_game__the_fray_jo.html
“Who says real men don’t whimper? Right now, wounded males rule America’s radio waves. Four of the biggest breakout songs of the season are big, weepy ballads crooned by mewling men. The trend began with James Blunt’s blubbery ‘Beautiful’ (which hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 song list in March), followed by Daniel Powter’s bruising ‘Bad Day’ (which got to No. 1 in April), Nick Lachey’s ‘What’s Left of Me’ (which last week peaked at No. 6) and, now, The Fray’s ‘Over My Head’ (which this week cracked the Top 10).”
These are considered ballads. Interesting. Do we agree?
And how would you define a ballad and a balladeer? The subject also got me wondering about what do listeners value more, lyrics or vocals, and whether a ballad prompts consumers to open their wallets to buy a CD or concert ticket more than an up-tempo song?
Here is Wikipedia’s definition of a ballad:
“Pop and rock ballads
Main article: Ballad (music)
In the second half of the twentieth century the term ballad took on the meaning of a popular or jazz song especially of a romantic or sentimental nature, and was often contrasted with up-tempo pop songs.[32] From the 1970s the power ballad was developed by rock bands as an emotional song, generally focused on love, delivered with powerful vocals and using rock instruments, particularly electric guitars and drums. Examples include Heart’s ‘What about love’ (1985).[33]”

Notice the age of these songs. This was back in the day, folks. Back when singing talent actually mattered, when there was no autotune. I am no musical historian, and I am not equipped to write a full-blown essay on how and when the music industry changed but it’s clear that something has changed.
Although I give props to The Fray for being listed in that article above, I’m having trouble separating lyrics from vocal talent. And “Beautiful,” though the song is very nice, for me, the vocals are weak – sorry James. I’m happy that that type of song was popular and received airplay. And the lyrics are clever, mature, the music catchy, even edgy, and yet it still did not move me. I won’t change the channel if it’s on the radio, but I didn’t buy it. Same with “Bad Day” – clever, smart, bouncy. Daniel’s voice is nice.
I think that what bothers me about the attention these songs got is that it could be anyone singing them. The vocals are average and sound similar to many other artists. There is nothing wrong with that, and clearly these people are talented.
The Fray, on the other hand, sounds different. At least to my ears. I know it’s The Fray. Does that mean all their songs sound the same? Some people would say yes. Kinda like Colbie Caillat – many of her songs sound very much alike, but when she sings, I feel something. Why do I feel something? I cannot explain that. Some people are moved the same way by James or Daniel.
When the old balladeers were on the scene, you knew who was singing from note one. I’d love to see a return to the value of real talent.. George Michael, for example, and how many of his hits were ballads? A lot. Would David not SLAY, FRY, STIR-FRY, then KILL “Careless Whisper” or “Praying for Time” or “Jesus to a Child”??? What I would give to hear this on the radio again instead of talk of someone’s disco stick…..
So it is with David. Does he soar vocally and emotionally when singing a ballad? Absolutely. Is David so much better than the material that his label has promoted? Yes. “Somebody Out There” is a prime example. It is a missed opportunity. It is just as clever, smart, edgy and vocally brilliant as 10 “Bad Days” or “Beautifuls,” in my opinion.
I have no music industry experience, and I know very little about what people want anymore (well maybe some Birthday Sex??) but it seems to me that David knows what he does best, he just needs the time, money, and trust of his label/management in order to make that happen. Guess what Davey Gravy? I’m not going anywhere…
Thanks

Funnygirl, thanks for this article! It’s really got me thinking. Is this your first? If so, great job!
So, in thinking about this topic, I’m going to blame two music genres: Emo and Hip Hop.
Both genres, IMO, are the most self-absorbed expressions of male angst and desire, completely devoid of any interest in their significant other, who is often reduced to some convenient object.
I really think these two genres are responsible for killing the ballad. Just take, for example, David’s season on American Idol. Here, we had the most moving, soulful, awesome male crooner we’ve had in a long time on that show with David. Here he came and just blew the roof off the arena twice his season -- first with “Imagine,” then during the finale with “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” and America voted for the guy who transformed the ballad into some kind of rock emo concoction. Basically, David Cook -- through his emo-rockified rearrangements -- turned traditional love ballads into creepy stalker songs. Think “Hello” -- “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?” Creeepy!!!!!! (when sung the way Cook did it).
Think “Always Be My Baby”: “Don’t you know that you can’t escape me / You know that you’ll always be my baby.” Creepy!!!!
And yet, Cook’s style was considered “more cool” than David, who by virtue of crooning so sincerely and wearing his heart on his sleeve, was considered “boring.”
Even one of the reviews of his Hartford performance called his singing of “You Can” as “overdone” with no mention of his soul-piercing “Apologize.” Meanwhile, Apologize -- the original version -- is viewed as a ballad but it’s not really played out like a ballad. It’s got a hip-hop beat driving it so that it became cool and popular on the airwaves.
And don’t even get me started on how hip hop has decimated the R&B ballad, thus transforming what used to be romantic, deeply moving, baby-conceiving love songs (think Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Freddie Jackson, Luther Vandross) into the most banal “bump-n-grind” songs ever produced (think R. Kelly and the latest of his ilk singing “ballads” like “Birthday Sex” or “Put You to Bed” or “I’m in Love with a Stripper”).
And people wonder what’s wrong with the relationships between men and women, why are divorce rates so high. Dude! Listen to the Music!
Enter David Archuleta singing like there’s no tomorrow, except we want there to be a tomorrow for him because he really can reinvent the ballad genre.
The challenge is: can he do it without his label insisting on a hip-hop beat or an emo-style intervention?
FunnyGirl, terrific article and HelloGorgeous, terrific response. My 16 year old daughter and I were just having this conversation on a road trip a few days ago — that so much current music is about sex. Not relationships. Not relationship sex. Just sex or certain sex acts. She’s as disappointed with this trend as I am and she was pointing out that the pregnancy rate at her rural Midwestern high school was very high last year. She’s given up on radio. She finds new music through her friends online and takes her iPod everywhere.
I listen to radio when I drive, sometimes, and my ratio of “changing the channel” to “finding a good song” must be about 20 to 1.
I’m with you, FunnyGirl. Standing firm in my support of David and hoping he gets his way musically sooner rather than later.
Wow! Funnygirl you’ve gotten right to the point--music with quality has been lost to technology. Can we bring it back? I certainly hope so. With artists like David, I would say it’s possible.
HG--”Enter David Archuleta singing like there’s no tomorrow, except we want there to be a tomorrow for him because he really can reinvent the ballad genre.
The challenge is: can he do it without his label insisting on a hip-hop beat or an emo-style intervention?”
I totally agree. Patience is going to have to become a virtue for all of us as we wait for David to make this happen--patience,patience,patience my dears.
Within everything in life there are seasons…living in a northern province we are reminded of this every day as days draw nearer to the changing of another season all over again…One season with its subtle changes is unlike any other but still wonderful in its’ own way.
Now that I have confused even myself a little I will tell you what I mean about all of that. Music changes in type, popularity and excellence. I can’t blame any singer for changing the makeup of ballads as we once knew them. It is not for us to criticize them but appreciate that we have music from them and that their music has been enjoyed and appreciated until a new season arrives, however slow and subtle the changes have been.
Then there is David and there is nothing slow and subtle about him and the changes he has brought to music. Every few decades there is someone that comes to us in music taking our very breath away. I must applaud and give appreciation to James Blunt, Daniel Powter, The Fray and all others for the wonderful songs that they consistently give to us and I take without criticism.
SB
My view is David needs time to find his element. He’s done exceedingly well for year one. He’s had a big hit pop single, a fairly successful debut album, and some successful tours. He’s also solidified his popularity abroad. His non-domestic album sales exceed a million. Not bad--better than Cook’s record.
Our impatience is understandable--but he’s only just getting started. His first effort out of the gate was to prove he was not “just” a ballad singer. Plenty of time yet for him to take a new direction next time around. Jive knows it’s got a winner.
I agree with you SandyBeaches. And this brings to mind something else about David when he performs uptempo music. It’s not just that he’s young. It’s that every movement bespeaks his youth and athleticism--and that is a part of his uniqueness as a singer as well. He may be a peerless balladeer--but he’s got physical grace and boundless energy as well. That deserves to be showcased too.
Yesterday I was skeptical…
Today Praepos, you have given me a change of thought. Thank you. “He may be a peerless balladeer-but he’s got physical grace and boundless energy as well. That deserves to be showcased too.” I get it. Let him be young and lively. (Oh, if I could only bottle that energy and make it legal!)
SandyBeaches, I agree that music always changes, but I’m not above criticizing it if it’s not to my liking -- even if I come off like an old fogey at times.
I tell my students all the time that I just don’t know HOW they find any of their current music romantic. That if they really want to be “put to bed” to a song, the ballad shouldn’t really be saying that up front. Subtlety in seduction is always nice, no matter what the generation. I think that’s what I really like about David and why I’m so excited about music again.
I’m coming out of lurkdom to comment on this article and post. I’ve been missing this place but I’m in the midst of my twins graduating from H.S., at two different schools no less!!
Funny Girl -- that was a great article, I hope you continue to write here!
It’s interesting to me, even though I love anything David sings, because just the sound and tone of his voice moves me, nothing gets to me more then his ballads. His voice, when singing those slow soulful songs, just puts me in a different place, clears out all the cobwebs in my brain and fills my heart with pure love and emotion.
I often wonder why people don’t enjoy ballads the way that they do more faster, uptempo songs. My husband is one of those people -- and while he adores all the R&B artists that HG mentioned, (Steve Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc.), the only songs he truly loved of David’s was Shop Around and Stand By Me. He feels a lot of the ballads that are written today have boring melodies and inane lyrics (his words, not mine).
Thanks again FG, interesting, thought-provoking article.:)
Hey Nina! Good to hear from you!
And congratulations to your twins graduating from high school.
Your husband has a point, which is why -- when I think of David singing ballads -- I would love for him to do an album full of cover ballads: those that can really show off his vocal skills. Some of us have had this conversation before.
Oh FunnyGirl, wonderful post! {{hug}}
And HG, LOVE your response.
I am completely confused as to what is considered a ballad in today’s world. (I always thought it was pretty clear, but apparently not given that reviewer who characterized David’s W-B concert as “ballad after ballad” …. what the…?)
David, imo, has re-captured (RESCUED?) the ballad (as I understand ballads) and nobody does it bedda. NOBODY.
I can’t imagine him ever leaving the ballad behind. As he develops his own niche, that incomparable facility with passionate delivery will never leave him. That is not only one of his trademarks, it is a living, breathing hunk of his soul. Lordy.
I have lately wondered if the reviewers have actually gone to the concerts.
Marlie, me, too.
Yup Marlie7, #12…my thoughts as well. They seem to not have a clue!
Looking forward to reading your article tonight, Funnygirl.
Just wanted to give a quick shoutout and double congrats to Nina! My third and youngest just graduated too, so we’re about to become empty nesters…I’m not quite ready for the quiet
Plus our son is getting married next week so my life is CRAZY at the moment.
Still, it’s good to be able to check in now and then to see what’s happening with our golden boy, to listen to the latest performances and to read all the postings. This site is my respite from daily stresses and I am so grateful to all you TDCers
Really lovely story about the meeting David had with the young Alicia at Del Mar. God bless this kid…he has an unbelievable heart of gold.
I enjoyed your article FunnyGirl. Ironically, after Rascal’s post I did the exact same thing you did trying to get the definition of a “ballad”.
I have a 19 year old niece and after talking with her at length about the music she likes, it became blatantly apparent that a huge factor in the appeal of artists to today’s youth is their “appearance”.
When I asked her what she liked about specific songs, she never once commented on the vocal talents of the singer or the meaningful lyrics in a song. She could, however, give me exacting details of his persona.
Apparently it doesn’t matter if they are permanently damaging their eardrums as long as the guy on stage with the “guy liner” is “hot”.
It seems that so many of the popular concerts nowadays are visually driven with all the pyrotechnics and lights, etc. It seems to be what today’s youth needs to be entertained. It’s such a shame.
I’ll take a well sung ballad any day of the week especially if David is the one singing it and as far as being visually entertained, well…we’re gettin’ that too!
Thanks for everyone’s well wishes and Zoe, once my twins leave in the fall for college, my husband and I will also be empty nesters. It’s very bittersweet and I’ve been an emotional mess lately. However, today I’m very excited because I will be seeing David at Nassau Coliseum this evening!! Yay!!
Have a blast, Nina! I’ll be seeing David Saturday in Philly! Love the venue where he’ll be performing…well known for its beautiful setting and fine acoustics. Can’t wait!!
Joner, I was into music from age… oh… 10…8??? on … was never much of a “he’s so cute” kinda fan type music lover (tho John and Paul were my fave Beatles…lol) — it was so much more about the radio back then… so it was all EARS first. And dancing. A whoooole lotta DANCING.
Anyhoo, EAR-WISE (hence,radio-wise and DANCIN’-wise), David’s album gives us everything anybody could ever want. He just needs to get more of that dang gold album ON THE RADIO. Oddly, I think the radio still plays a huge role, in spite of ‘Pods and internet. I mean David himself seems as enamored today with pop radio as I was as a kid. I think kids still are in love with the radio. (Have Car, Will listen to Radio) It’s part of the American fabric. Especially in the good ole summertime.
Does anyone know if David is still scheduled for the Ohio State Fair in Columbus on August 6th? Their web site has Demi Lovato with someone else as a guest and ticketmaster doesn’t show it at all…
Thanks!
Silverfox: You saw this coming: Louisville is canceled…
And Portland….
The Portland show is cancelled also.
Well, it will open up more quality time in the recording studio for him.
Mike, no David is not appearing at the Ohio State Fair. Instead he is appearing SOLO in Rockford IL at the Coronado Theater. Smaller venue. VIP tickets available, no upgrades. I think ticket sales are doing well for the four solo concerts. I don’t know about Alaska though. Wish I could go to Alaska. I have always wanted to go to Alaska…not really, but now I do!!
I knew Louisville would be cancelled. Not surprised, but deeply disappointed. Others will follow. How can you book a huge arena and sell 2000-3000 tickets, and most of the tickets for the “opener”..tsk-tsk! Not a smart move by Disney..should have booked smaller venues with David a headliner & Demi as the guest…IMO.
Silver Fox, so true. I still am in amazement that someone actually thought this concert was going to be able to fill arenas. They billed David as an opener for this Disney actress, and in some cases, even fail to mention he was performing. I would expect more cancellations too.
Thanks so much for all the comments!
Off topic: Further proof that I was born in the wrong year:

Reason given for Portland cancellation..
*************************************************************
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED due to scheduling conflicts of the tour.
Tickets purchased via credit card by phone, internet or box office will be refunded automatically.Tickets purchased at outlets or cash purchases at the box office will be refunded at point of purchase.
*************************************************************
No reason given for Louisville, but I’ve been following up and it’s obviously due to poor ticket sales. I have to STRESS that there has been virtually NO promotion here for the concert and NO mention at all about David.
But, having said that, competition this summer for teen concerts is fierce here, JB’s, Taylor Swift, Miley in the fall but tickets on sale NOW..so which concerts are teens lining up for and parents willing to pay for??
Has nothing to do with David..he’s not even listed on Ticketmaster for the cancelled venues. His fans most likely bought the majority of tickets that WERE sold. I know I bought mine for Louisville a long time ago. **sigh**
Well, it makes me sad because I was gonna try and meet my cross-town friend Silverfox!
This failure is on Team Lovato. It is quite probable that the lack of promotion, by not using David’s name, is not by accident and is something the headliner’s management is dictating.
Nina and Zoe:
Wishing you both a great time at your respective shows this week. I have tickets for tomorrow’s show in Newark, NJ! I’m bouncing off the walls right now, matter of fact, just thinking about it. But no VIP at least, until Atlantic City so I have all summer to muster up enough courage to go through with it. Heh
Anyone else going to shows this week?
Bebereader: So happy you will hear the Voice live tomorrow. Please spare no detail in your report and be sure to let us know what your tough-to-convert daughter thinks (she is going too, right?).
FunnyGirl, I apologize! I just read your post. I have never thought too much about the meaning or definition of a “ballad”. I just always thought in the contemporary genre, a slow song, usually about love, is a ballad, and in the rock genre, a ballad could be about almost anything…love, loss, dying, stalking, leaving, anguish, pain, depression, and on & on. David can sing about any all these emotions and make it REAL. Listening to TBWY, SOT, YC, Desperate, Falling..they are all “ballads” to me.
Like many of David’s fans, I think his next monster hit may just be a power rock ballad…like Desperate. IMO, of course.
Silverfox, I like your thinking. Desperate with some tweeks in production could really be something special, and I think David could really, really put something behind it now, a bit more than before.
Silverfox, may I ask how you knew that the shows might cancel? I’m a tad worried about the Kansas City show because KC radio was awful to David last year (and his appearance here is definitely hidden in the fine print) and I didn’t know how this one would sell. I called the venue and the person said she hadn’t heard any rumors of cancellations and wouldn’t say anything about sales. Stuck. Wondering whether or not to book hotel rooms and make concrete plans.
Silverfox we cross posted. I also have tix (and VIPs) to Omaha. I don’t want to even think about that one cancelling, dang it.
Unsettling to hear about cancellations. How has attendance been at the first two? If Providence should get cancelled I’ll be headed for another venue! Maybe promoters will have to get David out on those promo/phone ins etc again. I’m anxious to hear about other concert dates and how probable they are. Lucky folks who have the stand alone concerts. We all know how fabulous those are.
FunnyGirl #27, every video of David doing DLG since Sayreville is to die for! On this particular one, the only “complaint” I have is the guitar is almost overpowering David’s vocals. Or is it just me??
I do love the emotion David puts into DLG. He puts his whole body into it..speaking of body-language! HOT!
NO, no…I don’t mean to worry everyone..Dang! me & my big mouth. My comment is all JUST MY OPINION based on tickets still available for those venues..THAT IS ALL. And it’s still early for those venues! Just pay no attention to me. PLEASE!
Marlie, Liz, happy, someone! Delete my post #35 please. I don’t want to cause a panic…thanks.
Silverfox #35, I have not seen any promotions for the Cleveland concert either, while there are a ton of promotions for other concerts. I received so many emails telling me about concerts in the area this summer, but none of the concert schedules show Demi/David’s concert. I am worried.
SF #40 Done!
I’m fine, silverfox. Calming myself. The two cancellations in one day sort of got the whole fanbase talking, and since I’m from the KC area there was a concern, anyhow.
I’m just going to proceed as planned and hope for the best.
Disney has always been good with the classics…Snow White, Pinnochio, Bambi…their forte…
This is just not good business, perhaps destructive although David will make the best of it like no one can. But, that’s not good enough and looking at the economy they just did not put together this tour with a responsible and productive business plan…They put the fantastic cart on before the horse…
I wonder if The Kizzis are going on a cruise to Alaska? They go to the most unique locations to hear David and would bring back to us an amazing article for the month of September.
Thanks Marlie! Didn’t mean to alarm anyone. Anyway, here’s the rest of that post…cuz I do mean this..
prd9601..nice to know I wasn’t the only one looking forward to the concert here in Louisville.
Now I have a suggestion for David’s mgmt..who made the initial colossal mistake signing David on with Demi in the huge venues in certain parts of the country…why not schedule David to do a SOLO concert in a smaller venue on the cancelled dates. Let the fans who purchased VIP’s use them at the solo concerts, so no no refunds have to be given for the VIP’s which were s/o in Portland, for example. JMO..which doesn’t count for much. I just want David to know we are behind him through thick & thin, and WANT to see him. The cancellations have NOTHING to do with him and the way we can show it, is if they schedule a solo venue.
My daughters and I have tickets for Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mi on Aug. 17th. I bought them the day they began selling them. My hope is we will still be enjoying David and his music on that day. If not, I’m with Silverfox, have David do solo concerts in the same area. Great thinking! I also believe the cancellations have nothing to do with David. Management of both teams seem to have “missed the boat”!
I thought someone above asked how the past shows sold. I heard the Wilkes Barre stadium could hold 10,000 and attendance was 3,700.
I worry about Glendale since those tickets are down to 10 dollars per ticket and at least 6 other venues have tickets priced in the 12 to 15 dollar range.
Does anyone know how artists get paid on tour? Is it based on ticket sales? or is it a minimum guarantee and/or plus profit? How do the band members get paid? does it come out of the artists take or is theirs a separate deal? If there is a loss, is it absorbed by the promoter or the artists?
FunnyGirl,
Thanks for an extremely well-written post. It is news to me that a ballad is something different than it once was. I guess what people mean when they label David as “Ballad Boy” is, they think his choice of ballads on AI was not contemporary? Not emo enough or rock enough or edgy? I don’t know.
Nina#9,
WB and congrats to the twins! There is also what your husband said to be considered…that modern ballads have lame melodies and inane lyrics.
I don’t think we need worry about David falling into either of those traps. He is free from AI now and the musicians he admires the most, like Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz, Matt Duke, write and perform songs that have extremely clever lyrics.
I think David is going to be very influential in ushering in a new kind of ballad, melding the old with the new, and raising it to a higher power. The thing that his detractors don’t realize about David is that he has an ace up his sleeve…
He’s a genius.
SF#38,
“FunnyGirl #27, every video of David doing DLG since Sayreville is to die for! On this particular one, the only “complaint” I have is the guitar is almost overpowering David’s vocals. Or is it just me??”
SF, no it’s not just you. I would love to snatch that guitar out of that guys hands and smash it on the stage! ;x
SF -- there was a guitar in that DLG video? LOL
FYI -- If my concert gets cancelled I shall be checking myself into some looney bin.
Who was it here that said “If he threw a stick right now, I’d fetch it?” Best thing ever said in the history of ODD.
HG -- what you said before about the real R & B ballads and the gettin’ it on songs from back in the day, affectionately known as “undie-dropping” songs….heck, in WFY when David says he’s the one for me tonight (complete with that breathy exhale) -- that right there is Undie Disintegration. Ain’t no droppin’ needed they just went POOOOOOF! Ain’t he ain’t even TRYING (yet…) tee-hee
That doodle at the end of my post was supposed to be a scowling emoticon. Didn’t work. hmmmmm….that’s strange. Can’t imagine what went wrong.
I shall now enter emoticon test mode.
All systems at the ready.
Engage.
Success!!
I guess everyone has heard Jesse McCartney was approached by David’s peeps to write some songs for David??
Hmmmm. Bleeding Love was good, but he was a co-writer on that. And is he going to collaborate WITH David? Is David going to have input?
David seems to be very upbeat if the pic posted at FOD with Lesley Roy is any indication!
Good job Angelica! LOL
Funnygirl -- What concert in Michigan are you going to?
Angelofdja -- Freo and I have VIP tickets to Grand Rapids!
We would LOVE to meet up with you and your daughters at the concert!! We need to talk!!!
LOL, FG. You so baaaaaaad. {{hug}}
Angelica, and now get ready to test your smileyface. I do hope you have seen the new, improved, *Ultra Deluxe* version of the Barriers “Heyyyeee, munamup boomboom!” Merry Go Round. (The way it OUGHTA been done in the first place. To die for!)
courtesy of mrsxamontreal
Beebee -- I’m not really bad, I’m just drawn that way!
Joner -- I’m going to DTE Clarkston. It is a small venue so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. GAH!
Silverfox -- OK. I’m going to be the b*tch here. I’m not crazy about the Jesse-David pairing simply from the vibes I picked up from Jesse during the Jingle Jam concerts.
Quite frankly in all of the videos that I saw of Jesse around David he appeared to be very condescending towards David. He also seems to be very self-absorbed and self-promoting, not at all like David.
If he writes David a chart topping tune I may forgive him, other than that, I’m not impressed, he seems kind of full of himself. Sorry.
FG --> GOODBad…
lol
Beebee -- oh I’m bad like that LOL yeah!
Joner -- Jesse is an a** but so is Ryan Tedder, and lots of others but if he can write a great song for David, he could be a puppy-kicking, groupie-lovin’ spazz and I’d thank him. LOL Good luck trying to find anyone good enough to breathe the same air as our sweetie pie of love!
ballad alert -- so this could work for David!
ballad alert:
Funny Girl, as far as WFY is concerned, my undies already dropped at the falsetto -- long before the “I’m the one for you tonight” line.
Someone on my blog -- Burkey, I think? -- said that when she went to the Wilkes Barre concert, there was zero promotion of David in the lobby. Every poster and every ad was about Demi Lovato, so if this was done by design (to create a Demi Lovato show, while downplaying David’s part in the tour -- WHY???), then we really can’t fault David for show cancellations and poor ticket sales, can we?
Funnygirl -- BTW I’ll be at the concert the day before yours in Clarkston. I’m hoping to leave with my undies intact but I’m not making any promises.
By the way I am just posting songs that I think are great “ballads”……
HG you mean the never let gooooooooo! LOL
Joner -- ROTFL!
Another mega-talent that doesn’t get enough credit:
httpv://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6drsq_alicia-keys-if-i-aint-got-you-live_music
ooops
try this:
Is this a “ballad”?
It is the girl from ALTNOY video! Poppy R&B ballad I know but Elliot can saaang!
whattttt? the embedding isn’t working LOL!!!
Awwwww….they brought out his gold record tonight at the concert!!!
This from twitter…
They brought the gold record out & he held it and talked about how weird it was to see his face on it
Awwwwww….*sniff*
Aw..david is wearing the Invisible Children Tee dawn65 gave him at Tribeca..She’s ecstatic!
http://twitpic.com/8bijr
Awwww, Joner, so proud of him!
Yes, FunnyGirl, that’s the part:
Never let gooooooo
Gets me every time!
This also from twitter…
Buuahahaha……..apparently David is causing some hearing loss at the show tonight with all the screams!
I’m sorry, but David is not the reason that concerts HAVE been cancelled. He may be one of the reasons the concerts HAVE NOT been cancelled.
David is wearing a white shirt (no plaid tonight! haha), jeans & a black & yellow scarf. (is it cold in NY?).
According to the tweets from people there, David is on fire as usual!
#45 Silvefox that is what I would like!
I think David knows the success of this tour is not completely dependent on him. I think he’s not feeling pressured and is just having fun and is more rested since it’s a shorter set.
I still think they should book a smaller venue for a SOLO appearance on the cancelled dates and for any subsequent cancellations. Especially if David’s contract does not guarantee a set fee for the tour, which I doubt.
These cancellations were predictable. Demi’s not a big star and a lot of David’s fans are staying away. It was hubris on Disney’s part to think she could carry it off-- and stupidity on Jive’s part for involving David.
Funnygirl,
WFY is part of my daily diet. When he signs ‘I’m not gonna treat you like he did’, my heart hurts, so heartfelt he sounds. And ‘I’m the one for you tonight’ is cruelty.
It’s great to read your first article here!
Any chance of your ‘fiction writing’ showing up here, maybe in a more private room of the house? No? Ok. I didn’t think so.
*blushes and goes hide*
Just because..Ryan Tedder went to Nashville. They did not like him. He tried Christian music, didn’t like him. Pop music, they love him! Lot’s of good music in him
I think David Archuleta and Ryan Tedder would make your ears …..what ,,,,,,,
#79 praepos AMEN.
Co-signing on Praepos #79.
Jive can make up for it by booking some David solos in more intimate venues like Rockford IL and Pittsburgh.
Great idea, SF! Jive, are you listening?
Check out this Solo Venue promo..
http://www.therave.com/concert_details.asp?id=3936
SF: Wow -- now that is a nice promotion!
SF -- Now that’s how to promote a concert! I wonder if the venue was completely responsible for that or if David’s people had a hand in it.
While we’re on the subject of David’s solo concerts, have I told all of you that I have FRONT ROW SEATS to the Rockford, Illinois concert! The ticket Gods were very, very good to me!
And can I just say that those “kids” are pikers when it comes to screaming, they haven’t met me yet.
You may be reading about me in the Rockford papers…
Older fan spazes out at David Archuleta concert and pulls him off stage during his performance of “Touch My Hand”. Witnesses say fan would not let go of his hand and pulled him into crowd. When questioned about the incident, David Archuleta said, “She seemed harmless and looked like she was having alot of fun.”
Oh.my.heck.
Where else is David doing Solo concerts? Is there a list somewhere?
Joner #53,
Getting together with you and Freo to talk sounds like fun!
I thought about being selfish and trading the 3 tickets I bought into 1 VIP. Then on further thought, decided that would be so un-David like. I’m also thinkin’ 3 bodies in the crowd is better than 1 to support David!
Praepos, #79 I was one who was concerned about the “Demi” hook-up. I’ve decided David knows how to make the best of a bad situation and I honestly believe he’ll gain more fans when all is said and done. Especially if he can get some solo concerts in between. (jeesh, not that I’m wishin’ any more work on the young man!)
SF, #73 Have you “talked” to Dawn65? I’m glad David was wearing the shirt she bought him. That’s got to feel awesome! She is missed.
Joner..I think it’s Rave’s promo…are you kidding? If it was Jive, we would be seeing the same type of promo for the other solos.
Marlie..the solos are
July 28, Pittsburgh
Aug 6, Rockford IL
Aug 9, Sioux Falls SD
Aug 10, Milwaukee WI
All are offering VIPs.
SF: Thank you!
And here it is…

Another thing to consider is just the general state of the economy. The Jonas Bros are coming to the 4th of July Stadium of Fire here in Utah which is always HUGE and always sold out, and they are practically giving tickets away this year. I like to think it’s in protest that it’s not DAVID singing there, but I think it’s just the economy.
I am confident someday I will see the gigantic sign with his face on it hanging on the side of the stadium for months. Maybe next year. . .
That was soooo awesome! I am just so sorry a loved one, like his mom or sibling or yes even dad, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY who David is close to, was not there to share in another milestone for David..his first gold record plaque. Or maybe there was? I really hope so. He should have been able to celebrate. It just hurts me so much to think of David not having a family member with him tonight.
Good night all. And for David..
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Watch over him, protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his Archangels do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he’s weary. Give him the stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey. Keep David and and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born. And please Lord, give us, David’s forever fans, the wisdom to know when and how to do right by David. Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests. May his positive and good Karma continue to attract those with positive and good Karma! May he continue to encounter goodwill and happiness! May he continue to be healthy and strong wherever his journey leads him. Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray. Amen
David, hope you have a good night’s sleep & sweet dreams. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts! We will always love you madly! REMEMBER, if you are ever in need of help, tweet us an SOS and your Archangels will be there in a flash!
Contigo siempre con amor!
Sorry I’m so late getting here, so I’m kind of behind in reading the comments.
joner #56--I’m with you all the way on this one. JM seems very ‘into’ himself. JMHO
SF #38--I hope David’s mngmt. heard the ‘guitar solo’ and get it under control. That was ugly.
momjulee #98--let’s hope next year for the 4th of July!!!
I have been without internet access since Friday the 21st. Am just now trying to catch up. It sounds like DelMar was really wonderful. I am watching the vids and David as always is amazing but I have to say I am not loving the band. Back to catching up.
Pls don’t hate the messenger but someone just tweeted that Grand Rapids was also canceled. Proof?
http://www.tigerbeatmag.com/celebs/contests/win-tickets-to-see-demi-live-in-concert/
Oh nooooooo! Portland is cancelled? OK, I’m confused… you can still buy tickets on the venue’s site. A site—I might add—that doesn’t even show David on the bill (grrr… I used to love Portland!)
OK, I’m doubly glad I was able to go to Del Mar—am just back from there now, have been internet-challenged for days, it’s so so great to be back home here at TDC! Trying to catch up… where are the “(four?) added solo concerts” ?
SF -- genius! Yes, yes… solo concerts in the cancelled venues. How do we connect you with David’s mgmt? They need you!!!!
FunnyGirl #49--{{{giggling}}} that was me… ruff! ruh--ruh-r-r-RUFF!!!
desertrat..I called that one too, so I am not surprised.
David Solo venues are the solution..I’m tellin’ you!!
Ok so that teenie tiny snippet of the start of WFM (at the end of the gold plaque) kinda made me crazy. I am puh-RAYing for upclose vids of ALL of tonite’s songs.
SF, I still think you’re b.r.i.l.l.i.a.n.t suggesting plugging in solo concerts in the cancelled spots, but I will say, examining that schedule, MAN, the guy does deserve a lil break, so if your brilliant idea doesn’t pan out… I’ll at least know (HOPE) he’s getting r&r … or writing or something. (Which is nice.)
awww… a late tweet from David with just a teentsie pinch’o'snark lol (love HIM)
“I now have my very own personalized autographed Michael Johns CD. I think my life is one step closer to being complete. Haha”
I am so upset right now. Very disappointed and somewhat angry and hurt. I got an e-mail today from ILAA and ticketmaster that the Portland show was cancelled. That was the only thing I had to look forward to this summer. I was disappointed when David toured solo before and didn’t make it my way. I was so looking forward to seeing him July 13th, and I had splurged for the VIP ticket. Am I the only Portland fan out there? Did David even know these shows were cancelled today? He didn’t mention it in his blog or tweets. I know this had nothing to do with him and everything to do with what’s-her-name, but I am SO sad.
It also makes no sense because the show was scheduled at the Theater of the Clouds which only has a 6,500 seating capacity. It’s hard to believe it didn’t sell out from David alone. Also, there are no other events scheduled there that night. I considered taking the train up to the Seattle show, but their VIP package was sold out, and I’d have to spend the night somewhere. I’m not sure I can justify the extra expense.
Oh well, I know David has a long career in front of him, hopefully I’ll live long enough to see him in concert someday when he’ll be the headliner.
The way I see it is even though this is Demi’s tour and should not reflect on David, we all know that it will in some music business circles. If David’s mgmt is smart, they will book a solo venue for David to replace any and all cancelled venues. Let the VIP’s transfer to the solo venues to eliminate having to refund the money..that’s money meant for David! We are talking $195.00 per VIP ticket. I do not want to take money away from David. Especially NOT NOW. He gives so much of himself to his fans. The solution is more solo venues so David’s fans can have the option to use the VIP’s at the solo concert. When Jive sees the solo venues S/O, it will be a huge wake up call for Jive. If the solo venues already booked have not S/O yet, it could be due to fans have already bought tickets to the Demi tour close to the solo venues and due to economics, just can’t do both.
Bottom line, David should never have been signed to be an opener for Demi. Not saying some of the venues will be a bust. Some are selling well, however I believe it’s due in large part to David. If the tour had been booked in smaller venues, with David & Demi as co-headliners, they would have S/O when taking both fanbases into consideration. Too late now.
David must be made aware the cancellations are not his fault or responsibilty. I pray he knows that.
Good nite everyone.
SF -- 92 -- you’d already answered my question. Thx!
ajna #108,
I feel your pain. My daughters and I were all set with hand made t-shirts and giddy anticipation of August 17th. Dang-it if that concert wasn’t cancelled too! And to top it off, I was going to have the pleasure of meeting at least 2 other TDCers. Joner and Freo!
Guys, this seriously sucks.
I will anxiously await for a solo David concert in my area. I’m willing to travel, just need to know where?
SF, one can only hope the music beasts keep it toned down regarding these cancellations. I’ll pray for that.
Funnygirl, grew up with the beatle songs. But I love their ballad songs like yesterday and here there and everywhere.
HI guys another show is cancelled according to IDF. They said Grand Rapids. I am not sure if that is true. If true, there are now three cancelled shows: Portland, Kentucky and now Grand rapids.
angelofdja #46 , are you attending this GR concert? Please find out from ticketmaster if the concert is cancelled.
SF, I agree on your suggestion regarding those cancelled shows. David can do small venue concerts in the same area for those disappointed fans who can’t travel to nearby venues.
Dang! I woke up to find that my only VIP concert in Grand Rapids got cancelled. Bummer for everyone that was looking forward to going.
As far as replacing cancelled concerts with solos by David, my vote goes to House of Blues in Chicago. He sold out there within minutes and he’d be in the general area anyway.
HOB FTW!!!!
Are you with me Freo?
(((HUGS))) to those who have had their concerts canceled. That stinks. I would be heartbroken if Lafayette was canceled next week….I am suprised with Grand Rapids being canceled….are these conflicts or low sales? I am not a concert goer..(until David)…but is it a common thing to cancel concerts,,,,,”poof, poof, poof?”
Morning chuckle: Looks like Mike borrowed a plaid shirt from David to wear last night -- gotta have that plaid.
{{Hugs}} also to anyone whose concert got cancelled. But, SF, I’m wondering about your comment:
“When Jive sees the solo venues S/O, it will be a huge wake up call for Jive.”
I’m sorry, but didn’t David’s solo tour already serve as a wake up call to Jive? Are they not paying attention? Oh, we’ve had this conversation before: they haven’t!
From the deliberate editing out of older fans, male fans, etc. who appeared at David’s tour in his HOB Touch My Hand video to the deliberate marketing in the Disney direction, they are pushing a certain kind of Disneyfied version of David that most of his fans are saying: WE’RE NOT BUYING IT!
Seriously, Jive needs to take an account of what they think they’re doing. If David were fresh off the street, someone who had never appeared on American Idol, and they took one look at him and said “Radio Disney!” this marketing strategy would have worked out just fine. But, that’s not how it works.
Anyone who has paid attention to Idol contestants’ post-show career knows that those Idols whose careers follow the kinds of performances they showcased on the show are the ones with the most success (excluding Kelly Clarkson who transformed into a 21st-century version of Alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne, think Carrie Underwood, who recreated her country girl persona; Chris Daughtry and David Cook, who recreated their rocker personas; and Jennifer Hudson, whose shock boot history on the show strikingly mirrors the rejection her character Effie White received in the movie Dreamgirls, for which she received her Oscar). What this means is that David Archuleta, who never did Radio Disney on the show, in fact, reclaimed and triumphed in his mad interpretation skills on inspirational ballads and love songs, should have been marketed in this genre, give and take a few uptempo songs a la Crush and Zero Gravity.
His label and management totally threw out his ballad persona to pursue a misguided image of Disney David that appeals to the tweenie boppers, and it’s not working -- IMO -- because by the time David got a year older, so did the tween girls who voted maniacally for David when he was on AI, and those tweens are listening to what the regular teens are listening to. They too are beyond Disney, and if they are fans of David, it isn’t because he was “Disneyfied.”
If there is any “wake up call” Jive and Azoff need with this Demi/David tour not selling out in large arenas, it should be that they need to give up Radio Disney because it’s just not David, and nobody -- not even the tweens -- are buying it.
The glimmer of hope I have is that David himself has hinted that his second album is going to have a mature sound, and now that “Daddygate” has in effect taken a bit of the shine off of David’s “squeaky clean” image, it makes no sense to even go down that route. David has matured, and so has a certain segment of the audience who discovered him on AI.
We, his mature fans, ain’t going nowhere, so it’s time for them to take us into their marketing considerations too.
Good morning everyone!
Hi All I haven’t posted in a really long time. I just lurk, but I have to put my 2 cents in. I went to the Long Island concert last night, it was packed. David was fantastic, the crowd was crazy for him and loud!
With that being said I wish David had added in a different mix of songs ie. Del Mar. For me I have watched countless concerts with David singing his album songs and am longing to hear something else, somethin new. I think throwing in a few more covers would be great for summer, in anticipation of his next album with fresh material. Maybe it’s just me but it is time for a song change-up.
I have two extra tickets to Hershey, August 21, if anyone needs some. Contact me through the contact page.
#116, HG
You brought me out of lurkdom this morning. I had to say, “Great post!”
Good morning everyone!
Hey Olemr! Nice hearing from you!
HG #116
AMEN!
HG --
I don’t believe David is Disneyfied in the least. I think the exposure to the market that buys singles is a great strategy. Fans in my demographic aren’t big spenders on music.
I think the contrast of David and Demi is obvious; and the dollars Hollywood Records has for this tour is a plus.
As David progresses in identifing his musical genre since he, himself, says he is still experimenting, then, we will know what he wants to do. There isn’t one of us in fandom that KNOWS what direction he is going to go in.
So I don’t believe he is at the mercy of Jive. I don’t see him as helpless or without a voice. I don’t believe he wants to be a ballad singer. He has repeatedly said he wants to sing pop, what people his age listen to.
I believe he is fully engaged in learning who he is and the sound he wants to create and be known for. I believe he sees the summer tour as an opportunity and will land solidly on his feet, more experienced and stronger on the other side of the summer tour.
David is a Winner. He manifests all the qualities and outcomes of what goes into being a real Winner.
Winners deal with adversity quite adroitly and invented the phrase “make lemonade out of lemons.” Well, I am at the David Archuleta Lemonade Stand during the summer tour enjoying all the refreshing twists and turns of his tour. Will he evolve to who he is meant to be, absolutely. And, it will happen on his time line and no one else’s.
Good morning, HG and everyone!
Yeah, there’s no disneyfying David. He’s too real and unique for that.
(((kizzi))) I cannot hug you enough.
Kizze #122
You make good points. I love this site. Even when posters have differing opinions (and they do!), you guys make beautiful arguments for your point of view.
I still feel David has been failed by TPTB. Forget about pop v. ballad, David deserves the marquee creds of opening for someone like Jordin did for Alicia Keys. Demi Lovato?! She’s not even ‘first string’ Disney.
I remain disappointed, but confident in David. No one will ever be able to say he got anything for which he didn’t work his ‘little ol vocal cord’ off.
Does he have that thing insured BTW?
Kizzi, I didn’t say David was “Disneyfied.” I said there was an attempt to “Disneyfy” him, and it ain’t working.
I agree David is very good at making lemonade out of lemons, but what else is there to do? To some extent, one is often at the “mercy” of one’s label when one signs a contract, so I’m not blaming David for lackluster sales (if we want to interpret three show cancellations as such) or even for agreeing to this summer tour. The business is what it is, and I will again say: if there is a wake-up call for the label, it’s to realize that, if there were some kind of attempt to present a Disneyesque David -- and say what you will, Kizzi: putting David to “open” for Demi Lovato (who is not even on the level of a Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers) on a summer tour is about Disneyfying David -- it’s not working because David doesn’t “translate” in that way.
As Valbraz said, he’s too real (both musically and in his persona) for that.
“Forget about pop v. ballad, David deserves the marquee creds of opening for someone like Jordin did for Alicia Keys. Demi Lovato?! She’s not even ‘first string’ Disney.”
This! Thanks for mentioning this other issue, WhatJustHappened. Demi Lovato is beneath David. (Sorry, Demi fans.)
Jordin not only opened for Alicia Keys, she’s also opening for the Jonas Brothers. Please! I would not even be going back and forth on whether I should attend this tour if David were opening for the Jo-Bros and I don’t even like them. But I’d respect that they are the “It” stars right now, and THAT is how you get exposed to the market.
So far, the fan reviews have been: David’s solo concert at Del Mar was out-of-this-world awesome, while the Demi/David show reviews have been that David is just out of place in his musical superiority on this tour.
Anyway, have to head out to work. Signing off until next time!
Just read in my local newspaper, one of our 5 star hotel resorts are discounting rates 40% through Sept 30, along with a package
of discounted or free specialty services and attractions; plus a discount “coupon” for your next stay. It is tough sledding this year, regardless.
HG and Kizzi,
I agree with you guys.
LuvieD#114,
Don’t think about it! Don’t think about it!
Good morning!
thought you all would like to see a pic of David and his family and a few friends at Del Mar, posted at Fanscene…
*************************************************************
http://archuletafanscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/david-archuleta-family-del-mar-11.jpg
Aunt Martha says:
“We had a great time at the Del Mar State Fair Show. Lupe, Claudia, Amber, Jazzy, Little Will, Vicky, Jennette McCurdy from the iCarly show and her mom were also there with other family members. Jennette admires David very much and she is so much like Vanessa!”
**************************************************************
I was so glad he had family there to see him off for the tour.
Quickly checking back in before my lunch break. Thanks for that pic, SF. Is it just me, or has David gotten taller?
Feels good to be off work this week!
HG, the “wake up call” I was referring to is that they can cancel the Demi venues, but if they book a venue in the same area for David solo to replace the cancelled concert, it will s/o and Jive/Azoff will see the error in the pairing of David with Demi. My concern about the cancellations is the refunding of the VIP tickets is taking money away from David. I will keep harping on this. And I agree with much of what you said.
Kizzi, agree with much of what you said as well, especially..
“I don’t see him as helpless or without a voice. I don’t believe he wants to be a ballad singer. He has repeatedly said he wants to sing pop, what people his age listen to.”
Seeing him on stage in the videos of the tour so far, David looks happy, confident, & professional. If he has concerns, worries, or any other negative thoughts (DUH!), he leaves it all behind when he goes to work. That is the epitome of professionalism. We will have to wait til he writes his memoirs far in the future to find out what was going through inside during this tour…or maybe he will write some great music for a future album.
There was no acoustic set for the VIP’s last night, but they got to see his soundcheck..
Hope everyone who is going to the concert tonight have a great time!
HG -- I not engaging in debate; I don’t love debating. It has all the qualities of a diamond blade.
However, continuing to to paint scenario’s of victimization is what has prompted me out of my reticence.
David is a person of power; he is the master of his own destiny. As he grows he walks the paths that lead to doors that once he opens, he can step into that power.
Jive is cheap; Jive is slow and patient. These are things known about Jive. The marketing plan is UNKNOWN to us. I haven’t seen any full fledged attempt to “Disneyfy.” Appearances to gain recognition with the music buying demographic, yes.
Teens and tweens do like Lovoto and they buy music. We, the older, mature fan do not. And, we aren’t teens/tweens or the fan base that should be marketed to. And, if we liked Lovoto, Cyrus, Jonas bros, etc. then we would be the minority in our demographic.
HG, yes. David has grown in EVERY way.
He’s grown about 2 inches since the end of AI..shoulders are a little broader too. Legs are more muscular, arms are…oh never mind…you get my drift!
Praeposs #5
I was wondering if you mean that David’s album sold over a million not counting any sales in the US. I have tried to find such figures for songs and the album with no luck. If it is a reliable source than that is so cool.
Also,
does anyone know what happened to the spanish version of Crush that David said he recorded?
Victimization?
Don’t know how I left the impression that I was making David out to be some kind of “victim,” but I too will leave it alone since I don’t want to engage in debate either (especially on this subject, which has been beaten into the ground and for which we will just respectfully agree to disagree on the management issue).
SF, yes, I’ve noticed too (did a whole blog post on how much David has grown).
There was plenty of upset when this tour was first announced. That alone should have given Jive pause--as well as those fans who thought the tour was a great idea. It wasn’t. It’s never good when the opening act is better known and more talented than the headliner--especially when the headliner is a sixteen year old wannabe. It was a disaster waiting to happen--and it’s happening. The tour has only just started. There will be other cancellations. Demi’s already claiming she’s experiencing “vocal strain.” In the end it’ll be a wake up call for Jive. David’s never been just for the kiddies.
Yes--that’s beyond the 700,000 domestic sales. That’s 1,000,000 plus world-wide, not counting the U.S.--mostly in Asia (Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc.) but also Canada, Australia and Brazil
Btw, Cook’s sales world-wide are only about 30,000+. So David’s doing terrifically on the international scene--more on a par with Jordin who’s big in Europe (where David’s only beginning to be known).
Note: My numbers on Cook may be off a bit. He’s just released his album in Japan--and he’s #5 in the Philippines. (David A. is #2 there.)
No. 114, I am also going to Lafayette show next week and have been so scared that they would cancel that show because this is the first David show that I am going to and I can’t wait!!!!! It was my birthday yesterday so I bought these tickets for my birthday present to myself!

My ‘tough-to-covert daughter’ is not going with me tonight. And by the way, she’s still not a convert. But I no longer take it personally. She’s not a typical teenager except for one thing; she thinks it’s not cool to like her mom’s music so it wouldn’t matter whose music I played, she’s just not having it.
However, David was singing “Apologize” from last night’s show in Nassau (Have you heard it? It’s the best one so far!) as she walked in the door today after H.S. graduation practice. She relayed to me that at practice, three classmates were wearing David Archuleta tshirts! I could tell she was impressed by Apologize because A) She sang along and B) She didn’t ask me to lower the volume. For me, that’s progress. There’s no denying THE VOICE; I’m thinking I have closet fan on my hands. haha
Going to get ready for tonight’s show.
Looking forward to meeting Dawn, happy and djxox!
thanks everyone.hope you enjoy them ..more to come..gotta go now ..I have a “date” in Newark !!!!!
DJ, have a ball! (with magic camera in hand.
)
bebe have blast… can’t wait to hear all about it!
djxox…. you totally rock…. have a great time tonight.

Fan Scene did a little investigating into the Demi Lovato / David Archuleta show cancellations and came up with some encouraging news!
We found out that David’s management is working to find alternate locations for David to HEADLINE ON HIS OWN to replace the shows that were canceled.
So we just have to be patientThere is no guarantee they will find new locations, but rest assured, Team David is trying their best to not disappoint!
Joner, #164 Patience will be my middle name until further notice…
Joner #164..UH, ya think TPTB read TDC???
See #45,78,85,105,109,132.
And I emailed Jive with the same suggestion! YES I DID, even though they probably didn’t read it!!
As fans of David, we gotta show our power! POWER to the Forever Fans of David!
“And I emailed Jive with the same suggestion! YES I DID, even though they probably didn’t read it!!
As fans of David, we gotta show our power! POWER to the Forever Fans of David!”
Good for you, SF! Fan Power FTW!!
Now this is funny (or sad…I dunno)..
Some fans are HOPING more venues get cancelled if it means there could be a SOLO concert instead!!
Not sure what to think about that except…DO YOU BLAME THEM!!
Demi/David or solo David…YOU pick??
Bebereader, dawn65, djxox, happy and anyone else going tonight have a great time and take notes we’ll be waiting!
Funnygirl….very interesting post.
I’m in total agreement… Somebody Out There which he hasn’t been singing on tour is a missed opportunity. It was released to itunes without any promotion, it just became available. But what do I know…
That picture up there is epic…that and the heartbeat sure gets everyone worked up with anticipation…. I’m loving every single youtube of his performances, he’s brilliant!
There letting cameras in VIP….may get some video.
Oh dear. Just saw on the news that Michael Jackson was taken to the hospital due to a cardiac arrest.
Whatever you think of him, please keep him in your prayers.
Already saddened with news of Farah Fawcett’s death.
djafan…Cameras allowed for the VIP’s? Good, I’m glad to hear that. Hope all the TDC’s are having a great time..and are still standing after meeting David and getting a hug. Hope they have a defib..just in case
I’ve never been a fan of anyone but David….Michael Jackson was the only one that ever came close…
Praying…

Interesting comment from a reader on a pop teen site:
“OMG! I Just got front row tics to jo bros world tour on 24th nov in dublin,Ireland and I just found out demi is replacing jordan in the european tour dates! I LOVE DEMI”
So, Demi is being replaced by Jordin for the JBros European tour? Very interesting.
The reports coming in regarding Michael Jacson is that he has passed away..
Don’t mean to digress, but perhaps his wardrobe selection needs to be properly discussed?
David is wearing a scarf in the summer and he started to sweat profusely by the second song. We know the scarf is not for climate control because he could have easily taken off the scarf when he started to sweat. But he did not. It is a fascinating visual contrast. This particular scarf is given by a fan (in UK) and, from all indications, most of his scarves he wears on stage are given to him by his fans. I feel the wearing of a scarf (especially in the summer) is a statement, not so much as a fashion statement, but a telepathic statement to his fans – that he feels cloaked in their love.
As to the sweating, he could have wiped off the sweat with towels, which, incidentally and conspicuously, have never been in sight on stage, even though they could have been easily provided upon his request. He knows he sweats easily but apparently never asked for towels to be available. Me thinks he is fully aware what he is doing to us…
Michael Jackson reportedly has passed away of a heart attack.
If true, David will be greatly affected. Michael is one of David’s idols.
HG, I think I’m falling in love with you. Do you happen to have that e-mail address or any address for David’s people? Because I’d love to let them know how I feel right now. As far as making up for cancelled shows, shouldn’t they take place in the cities that were cancelled? It doesn’t help me in Portland if they re-schedule our show in Chicago, as someone suggested. That would REALLY piss me off.
To be honest, I’m almost not upset about the cancellation any more. When I splurged on the VIP ticket, it was with the understanding we would get an acoustic set with David and a meet and greet opportunity. That’s what ILAA advertised. It doesn’t sound like people are getting what they paid for so far. I would never have paid $200 to sit through a sound check and get a bag with a t-shirt and key chain.
To say that David is being mismanaged on this tour is an understatement. They’re giving a 16 year old brat the power to cancel shows because her ego can’t handle half the audience walking out before she comes out on stage. I can’t say I blame her, really. The venue here in Portland holds less than 7,000 people, so if half the audience or more left after David (as I was planning to), that would hurt. They should never have been on tour together, at least not with her headlining. Demi has her own VIP package, I’m sure they aren’t selling as well as David’s are. Does anyone remember if David’s VIP tickets were sold out in Portland?
I’ve learned patience in my advanced age, so I don’t mind waiting for David to outgrow this stage, where they’re obviously marketing him for teenyboppers. It won’t last forever. As he grows and matures so will his sound and I can wait. I’m looking forward to the day when I can see him in concert and actually hear his voice not being drowned out in a sea of little girls screaming. I will ALWAYS love David, until the day I die, I’m a fan for life.
Holy moly! As I was typing that I just heard Michael Jackson died. His poor kids! He was their only parent. Very sad. May he rest in peace. So much talent gone.
I just broke down into tears when I heard the news of Michael Jackson passing away. Seriously! My heart is broken.
I’m in denial over this MJ news; unbelievable.
#175 Jordin, JoBros, and Demi are all managed by The Jonas Group. The Jonas Group is led by Kevin Jonas Sr (dad), and Phillip McIntyre.
I am heartbroken. The King of Pop is dead. I’m sure David would agree. So sad.
Confirmed..Michael Jackson has passed away. This will break David’s heart.
Why does it feel like Elvis just died…again.
All this dismay about 3 concerts being cancelled has just been put into proper prospective for me by Michael Jackson and Farrah’s news.
Go David and stay healthy.
“perspective” oooops -- too many of those lately
YJfanofdavid….
I think you may be on to something….hehe
Michael Jackson passing is very sad news… I hope no one tells David until after the concert.
Djafan, just saw his twitter -- he knows.
To late…. David just tweeted…
Oh my heck…. Really really sad to hear about Michael
13 minutes ago from web
My 15-year-son called me just now from an amusement park he was at this afternoon to tell me people were crying on the news of Michael Jackson’s death. It’s heartening to know the younger generation loved him too …
Following the sad news about the death of Michael Jackson, I am certain that we at TDC, will soon be commemorating his life and untimely passing.
One of David’s favorite Michael’s songs..
And one of my favs..
RIP Michael..
OMG..scanning YouTube for videos of Michael..there are so many. Michael electrified the stage. It’s been a long time since I watched any vids of Michael. He was the consummate entertainer. Exactly what David is fast becoming. Only three in my lifetime, Elvis, Michael, and David.
Gosh, in the wake of this news, I really had to step away from the messages in my inbox. Can I just say to folks here that if you have issues with anything I say on TDC, just confront me about it here, please? I have profound issues with people who take on a passive-aggressive stance and think they can email me privately on stuff and then try and interrogate me in some kind of attempt to discredit my knowledge base. Sheesh!
Okay, let me take a deep breath. I’m obviously still rattled by the Michael Jackson news.
Silverfox, thank you so much for these videos. Really appreciated!
HG, This is for you. It is what came to my mind when you referred to David as the world ambassador of pop. When I traveled to Europe 25 years ago, I heard We Are the World played everywhere, even in the most obscure corners.
Trying one more time:
It sunk in and I can’t stop crying. All the pictures they’re showing on CNN of MJ as a little boy and young man are killing me. He was so beautiful, before he started changing his face.
I grew up with him….we’re the same age, I loved him as a little girl. I think for a long time now Michael has been a tortured soul and was in so much pain emotionally. Whatever he may or may not have done to children, I can’t help but feel so hurt for him. I don’t believe in hell the way most people do. Sometimes I think hell is right here on earth for some of us.
The things I’m hearing now are further breaking my heart, that he may have been enabled by those around him to over-medicate. People who didn’t have his best interests in mind, who were just using him. Why, why, tell ‘em that is human nature. I’m crying again now, just thinking of that beautiful song, my favorite of his. I so hope he is at peace now.
{{{YJfanofdavid}} Thank you!!
I’ve always loved his “Man in the Mirror” too!
David is at his concert right now paying tribute to Michael Jackson saying what an inspiration he was to him and everyone and asks to keep his family in our prayers. Awwwww….
{{Ajna}} I hear you! I’m still weeping salt tears.
Anybody think David might sing a Michael Jackson song at tonight’s concert? It would be very touching if he did.
This video won’t embed, but I gotta tell ya! I remember it like yesterday!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=En-cHBv7UpA
It was my first ever MTV music video! Fell in love just like that! Kinda reminds me of David, the only other person on TV who I fell in love with instantly. (I actually hurt my back imitating that tippy-toe move at the end -- haha!)
RIP, Michael! King of Pop Forever!
What’s incredible to me is the number of views these videos have had on YouTube.
This one has had 5,539,585 views……yes, over 5 million. And the one HG posted up above had over TWELVE MILLION VIEWS.
THE.KING.OF.POP.
Now I can’t stop crying….. Bebe called me from the venue and I heard David sing My Hands and Works For Me, then his statement about Michael being his idol and inspiration….tears
Thank you Bebe…((((hugs))))!
David’s Crush video has over 17 million views on just his official site.
Rena, seriously??? I never paid attention. I’m speechless, that’s unbelievable! YAY David!
My favorite Michael Jackson video -- it’s long but worth it. Such sad news. I grew up with MJ also. Such a loss.
Heard David asked that acoustic session not be downloaded to youtube. Reasonable request. Fans paid good money for the PRIVATE session.
MTV is currently playing Michael Jackson videos. (And so they should since Michael Jackson was responsible for their huge success).
Check this out. That voice, the dancing, what a master showman he was:
I’m really choked up here. Michael was about two years older than I. I literally grew up with him. The last time I felt like this was when I heard John Lennon was shot. I remember the story -- it was either after the Motown 25 Billie Jean performance, or after the premiere of Black or White (which had that rather controversial dance sequence after the song)- and reportedly Fred Astaire himself called Michael and congratulated him and told him “You’re a great dancer, a helluva mover.” I know that had to mean the world to Michael. Not only was he a musical genius, but the consummate entertainer.
The news of Michael’s passing hit Brazil’s biggest tv network as I was getting home from work. I gasped in shock. That’s awfully sad. He was my first pop idol and never lost this status with me. RIP Michael!
I still have not really *realized* the news. Too stunned.
Kurt, yes, I was thinking about how Fred Astaire called him after the moonwalk. (Kinda reminds me of how Yoko Ono called Foster after David’s “Imagine” just to basically *thud!*)
I remember the moments when JFK, Lennon, and Princess Di died.
Phew. Just hard to believe.
{{Ajna}} Love your #201, especially this: “I don’t believe in hell the way most people do. Sometimes I think hell is right here on earth for some of us.”
Over 37 Mil views:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtyJbIOZjS8
sheesh, I completely forgot that Lisa Marie Presley was briefly married to MJ.
sorry, that was random.
hm…what does it mean when “Salt Lake City Blog” chooses to follow me on twitter. :/ to block, or not to block… *ponders*
Good News amidst all the sadness. Has this been posted?
David Archuleta Show Cancellations: Some Encouraging News!
Posted: 25 Jun 2009 09:31 AM PDT
Fan Scene did a little investigating into the Demi Lovato / David Archuleta show cancellations and came up with some encouraging news!
We found out that David’s management is working to find alternate locations for David to HEADLINE ON HIS OWN to replace the shows that were canceled. So we just have to be patient.
There is no guarantee they will find new locations, but rest assured, Team David is trying their best to not disappoint!
Maybe it’s old news! If it is ~ sorry! I have not read all the posts yet!
Folks, Uniondale page is already up, just forgot to post this note yesterday
http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/2009/05/uniondale-ny-june-24-2009/
DJXOX -- thanks for your vids esp WFM. So far you are the only one with the complete footage of that performance
What a morning to wake up to. Another great artist, gone too soon…
David will be heartbroken… Rest in peace, MJ
In the midst of sadness today, here is something nice:

marlie…you have MAIL..
SB
JR, thanks for posting that clip of “Gone Too Soon”. I can’t believe I nearly forgot that performance. And so appropriate… I’m a mess tonight.
In the Philippines, when asked what singer had most inspired him, David cited Michael Jackson--to the audience’s obvious approval. Tonight’s comments by David reminded me of that.
Hi Guys -- just got back from Newark. I was with my two “hard tp convert” daughters. They came find our for themselves what my obsession with David was. Well I can tell you..’mission accomplished’ for me. They were videoing David on their cell phone and sending it therer friends…they were very much impressed. we stayed for Demi but after two songs…they asjkd me to leave. that was fine for me.
Here is DLG for the ladies:
“Syesha wowed us during American Idol season 7, and made it to the #3 spot in the competition behind David Archuleta and Dane Cook.”
I know it’s a minor detail, but I get a kick out of David’s name being listed before Cook’s (whose first name isn’t even correct -- heh).
Is David destined to be a legend, like the one he paid tribute to tonight?
Thanks for the article, Marlie, and thanks for one of our first vids from Newark, Esperda.
Ok here we go~
You Can… Newark was awesome~
Am watching CNN’s coverage on MJackson and in one interview, it was said that he had no real friends; that he led a sad life. Everyone needed something from him.
So my wish for now is for David to never to lose contact with his childhood friends. Am also glad that he seem to have a strong familial bond. That should keep him grounded even when he reaches super stardom.
Barriers -
I’m in shock about Michael Jackson. I grew up on his music, tried to copy his dance moves. Truly the end of an era.
Thanks to everyone who uploaded videos, a great tribute to a great artist. So very sad.
Apologize --
esperda, did many others leave with you? Is it true Demi loses half her audience?
Zero Gravity --
I have always been a defender of Michael anytime anyone started to attack him and his life. We grew up together. Me and my Tiger Beat magazines with Michaels cute self all over my bedroom walls!
I believe fame and money effects different people, different ways. Not unlike Elvis, some of Michaels “people” were untrustworthy. What a screwed-up industry. Or is it us(fans)?
Jeesh, I just read that back and sorry for the rambling…I guess I’m just blown-away. I feel like I did the day John Lennon was killed. Shocked…
I’m thinking about David, too. I hope he is always surrounded by those that truly care about him.
R.I.P. Michael. You will be missed.
#234 praepos -- there was a 20 minute intermission but it looks liked many people left after David. There were rows of seats that were emptied out after David.
David’s latest tweet…
Ah, I can’t get over MJ. I know everyone’s talking about it but he deserves the respect. I hope people will appreciate what he’s done.

HG -- 116 -- I have to admit, I am one of those fans saying “WE’RE NOT BUYING IT!” I am disappointed that Portland was canceled, only because after Del Mar I decided to ride the tail end of the DL hayride, after all, just to get my David fix. I mean really, all summer now with no live David? EEK! Got ready to hunt down tix when I heard the news--but I’m not in the least surprised that it’s canceled, David has still never been played on the radio here, perhaps because he’s not pierced and ear-plugged? (Sorry for the snark, am just GRUMPY about the whole David sitch here.)
joner -- 164 -- Aiyeeeeeee, YES!! Happy dance!!!!! There’s hope…
Ajna -- have you posted here before, you’re the only PDX David fan I’ve ever heard of in this town!! ***WELCOME!!!!***
And re: your #108, I’m guessing it wouldn’t sell out for David alone, here, because of that what’s-her-name connection, I can’t imagine this market would go for her, much. Kinda dumb, but my initial decision to boycott the hometown gig was my own personal statement that, as previously mentioned, WE’RE NOT BUYING IT!!
JR #230, you said..
“So my wish for now is for David to never to lose contact with his childhood friends. Am also glad that he seem to have a strong familial bond. That should keep him grounded even when he reaches super stardom.”
Very true, but unfortunately, even friends sometimes turn into “yes” friends, instead of “real” friends who will always be there with no agendas. David has fans who will never be afraid to speak up when we feel something is not quite right. We will always have his back. Forever! For as long as I am alive anyway. I do hope at some point he will have either close friends or relatives his own age accompanying him so he is not ever alone or lonely.

What David has been doing with YOU CAN on this summer tour is just wrong! He can hurt someone with that smile, and the eyes, and, oh, there’s the smoky, slightly breathy, awesome voice too!
I had the pleasure of seeing David perform tonight in Newark. It was great to bump into Happy and DJxox, and share some time with them before the concert. The night had a surreal quality with the news of Michael Jackson’s death having just been announced and playing on the TV in the bar at the Prudential Center.
Having been spoiled by being thisclose to David at the PC Richard event, our seats tonight were towards the back. Tonight was dedicated to listening to David sing HIS songs at this huge arena and in front of a packed house. David was, I think, clearly upset by the news that one of his mentors had died right before his set was to begin, and he made a brief statement to that effect. However, David’s performance tonight was truly magnificent, and you can add “trooper” to the laundry list of wonderful qualities that David embodies. He sang his heart out, and every song just filled this huge arena with his delicious voice. At his inaugural , John Kennedy said that “the torch has been passed to a new generation.” I could not help but get the feeling that a similar torch had been passed on this night. I left with a feeling that we now have a new “king of pop”, one which the previous one would have been most proud.

Ajna -- hugs to you on all counts (cancelled show, MJ death, etc.), and totally agreed on your #201 re: ““I don’t believe in hell the way most people do. Sometimes I think hell is right here on earth for some of us.” Indeed.
beebee#19 -- sorry this is probably passe’ but I agree with this totally! “Anyhoo, EAR-WISE (hence,radio-wise and DANCIN’-wise), David’s album gives us everything anybody could ever want. He just needs to get more of that dang gold album ON THE RADIO.”
I still listen to his album 24/7, well maybe more like 18/7. Gave up on radio & VH1, as they’ve gone back to that boring stuff that was playing BF David’s Gold album & Crush release. My radio surfing really bugs my hubby, anyway. So thankful for earplugs & ipod/zune Might be in the minority here but I love his first album. Of course, I also love SBM Manilla, Imagine LATL & summer tour, WYSYLM LA idol tour, ZG (all of them), ATM fanpack -- pretty much anything he sings…. Yeah, pretty much anything he choses to sing…….
Newark Tour Page now up & complete

Thanks for all your work, JR! Much appreciated!
HG#131 -- “Is it just me, or has David gotten taller?” …and definitely looks older than 6 mo’s ago. Or is it more confident? Wow! Looks good, whatever…..Love that pic with his family. Boy Amber (youngest sis?) is gorgeous…. like someone else we are so ODD over.
MARLIE @ #210 -- can you download that MJ vid for me? I cannot access it. Thanks.
HG @#247 -- You’re welcome
In another note, aside from MJ, Farah Fawcett lost her battle to cancer today.
blisskasdan . June 25, 2009 at 11:39 pm .
Channeling my thoughts again dear one! I have not read anything here for a day and I come to see you have written what I had thought about this morning. On my walk I was thinking about Mj and how David grew up under his musical influence. Then I had a “vision” of angel MJ descending down to David’s heart to soothe his sorrow. I am sure that the torch has been passed. I shall keep an eye out for some subtle moves and stepped up vocal runs!
