The Ambassador of Pop
A Purely David World Album Concept
A curious thing about 2008: This was the year that I discovered the music of both David Archuleta and MIA (née Maya Arulpragasam). Yeah, my music collection is eclectic like that, and although MIA and David are completely different from each other, they have two things in common.
1. They have a “Third World” connection (MIA, who was born in London, has parental roots in Sri Lanka. David, who was born in Miami, has parental roots in Honduras).
2. They both want to use pop music to send a global message.
In short, both are committed to using music as “inspiration” for action. But that’s where the similarities end. MIA is hardcore in her message: Coming from a war-torn country, surviving as a political refugee, and living in poverty (both in South Asia and in the UK) her message is one of political agitation, which addresses everything from terrorism to refugee status to immigrant rights to globalization. Her popular, Grammy-nominated Paper Planes is a prime example.
David, coming from a much more sheltered life and growing up in a religious faith that still preaches missionary work and charity, has a message that is equally global and politically urgent. In contrast to MIA’s dystopic worldview of warfare and global poverty, David’s is the more optimistic and hopeful message of love, joy, peace, and charity.
Despite these differences, I was intrigued by what these two artists had to offer in their respective genres. MIA, who is every bit a lover of world pop as David, uses hip-hop, ragga, dance, and bhangra to rap about Third World realities in a way that the First World would care. David’s divine and soulful voice elevated John Lennon’s “Imagine” in a way that made a soldier cry in a war-torn country. MIA agitates, David soothes. MIA raps about the destruction of our world; David sings about its eventual rejuvenation.
I get excited about what these two distinct artists could do to the current music scene. MIA’s critically-acclaimed sophomore album, Kala, was produced around the world (so the lore goes) when she was denied a visa in the U.S. to work with Timbaland. The visa denial was presumably because her seemingly pro-PLO and Tamil Tigers lyrics (See, for example, her video Sunshowers) from her debut album made her questionable in the eyes of our Homeland Security office. Her music gives us insight into what world pop music could sound like. Producing different tracks in countries like Trinidad, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Australia, MIA showcased the ultimate remix possibilities of hip hop and made the genre exciting again (at least for me).
What MIA does to hip hop, I would love for David to do with pop. His international tour this year inspired in me a vision for David to do something similar: To produce different world tracks that capture the spirit of some of his favorite countries: the Philippines, the UK, Honduras, perhaps even Uganda (in homage to his Invisible Children charity). If anyone can rejuvenate a “world” sound infused with his commitment to pop and soul, David is the one.
More than a potential “king” or “prince” of pop, perhaps he’s destined to become the Ambassador of Pop.

HG,
I love your vision for David: rejuvenating a “world” sound infused with his commitment to pop and soul,” and I love how you are able to see the commonality of these two seemingly disparate artists. Great insight!
Thanks for introducing me to M.I.A.; I’m not familiar with her work. I like your ideas as they relate to new directions for David take his music. He definitely has the potential to redefine “pop” music. Eventually, he may have to part ways w/Jive to realize his full potential. Great post HG!
HG, as Desertrat wrote, thanks for telling us about MIA. I do think as you wrote that he is destined to become the Ambassador of Pop. Let us wait for the 2nd album.
From previous post, thanks Fandaforeverti48 and Kizzi. Just surviving, one day at a time.

Review of last night
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705309066/RSL-climbing-a-mountain-with-no-end.html?pg=1
some excerpts: ( with reference to DA)
It was a polished, composed, finished performance, drawing a roar of approval from the crowd at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday night. Pop star David Archuleta was everything the people wanted, both before and after Real Salt Lake’s 1-1 draw with Colorado.
….
This season, RSL has mostly followed the lyrics of Archuleta’s song called “Barriers”:
This mountain we’ve been trying to climb
It’s never ending
Just can’t do nothing, gotta do something. .
….
A star-studded night?
Sure, if you count Archuleta.
You have to hand it to Real. It’s doing what it can to attract an audience – and it did. A crowd of nearly 20,000 showed up. In the midst of its struggles, the club still managed to bring in teen heartthrob and Murray native Archuleta — which accounted for an inordinate number of star-struck teenage girls, who wouldn’t know a header from head lice.
An hour before the game – and long before Archuleta appeared — you could hear girls squealing and calling “David!”
Come for the “Idol” worship, stay for the soccer.
Archuleta started things off with a nice, clean version of the national anthem, wearing a personalized RSL jersey. Then the game began. Nothing much changed there. Pretty much standard stuff for this year’s club. It couldn’t hold off Colorado after taking the lead. After the game, Archuleta sang several songs, including “A Thousand Miles” — which happens to be how far RSL is from where it wants to be.
…
So it was against a backdrop of glamor (Archuleta) and desperation (RSL) that Real took the pitch on Saturday.
Club officials had been saying all week they weren’t looking to make changes, but if things got to a certain point, they would.
Seems they’ve reached that point. RSL is winless on the road this year and now has two road games ahead before returning to Sandy.
“I fully expect it to turn around,” said Checketts.
Maybe things will indeed change. The season stretches into late October.
But more and more, it looks like they might have to get by on the entertainment.
For those who missed the SSB, here are few videos , in different angles ( I posted them also in the previous post)

Wow, Vee! Thanks so much for these videos! You’ve been missed!
And thanks to those of you who’ve commented on my post. Part of my writing this piece was to reconcile how I could listen, admire, and be a fan of two very different artists. I mean, apart from their music being different, their tweets are sooooo not even in the same category. While David makes us smile and gives us so much joy with his twitter, M.I.A. is making all kinds of new enemies since she’s very vocal about the deterioration of what’s going on in Sri Lanka right now.
Oh well. That’s what makes music so awesome -- it really is a medium to connect an artist’s vision of the world with others. And, for me, I can accept these different visions, as long as the music moves me. I realize I don’t have to even share the same views of an artist, but if the art speaks on a different level, I can totally respect and even revere the expression. That’s why it irks me to no end when I see a pop music industry that’s invested in squeezing out individuality for some formula of what sells. Over the weekend, I had a chance to see a special program on PBS on the Freedom Songs of the Civil Rights Movement. The music back then kicks serious, serious butt out of the current music scene. It’s like, wow! There were songs I knew (Marvin Gaye’s What’s Goin On, or Nina Simone’s Mississippi, God Damn) but other songs I didn’t, and it just blew me away. The creative flow of the tunes, the vocal skill, combined with reflective lyrics of the time period… that’s the kind of music that will last and last forever because they’re so timeless and because they’re so inspired.
David is an inspired artist, so I do look forward to what flows out of his soul, but for real genius to shine, he’s going to have to get great material. See, I take my music seriously. I take my vocalists seriously. Sometimes, I wish the music industry took their product seriously too.
Can I just say again how stunningly gorgeous David looks in his jersey? GAH! Need new pics now! He’s got so much sex appeal, seriously, how could anyone think all that beauty should be packaged for children who’ve yet to hit puberty?
Not to drag us back into a certain argument (you know me -- just expressing myself! Ahem).
HG: Thank you for introducing me to yet another interesting musical artist. I, too, hope that David can fulfill what I think he is capable of -- King of Pop, Ambassador of Pop, and probably much more. Perhaps pop isn’t even the right genre for David. Certainly not in the current vein of pop for me.
I was listening to XM 20/20 the other day by accident -- I’m usually plugged into an iPod and listening to a book on tape or something from my own musical collection. But, I was lazy about plugging in. And what the heck -- did they keep playing the same song over and over? Nope -- just that they all sounded the same -- the only difference being, oh, a woman is singing, oh, a man is singing. Is this David Cook, no, it’s Nickelback. Hmm. Boring! And there are some songs playing on that station that I swear have been on there for over a year. I just can’t put David on that station singing that kind of ….crap. It really is, and I’m sorry if others really like it. I just can’t be moved by it.
Perhaps some of us are just spoiled having grown up on The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, CSN&Y, and others from that era. And you interested me in seeing that PBS show -- the music of the Civil Rights movement -- I barely remember some of those times, but I do remember some of the music was deep and heartfelt. So much different from today’s “I kissed a girl”.
Vee! Thank you -- I get up in the morning, pop on here and you have ALL the cool videos right there waiting for us. You rock!
My problem with the current pop music scene, Marlie, is that it’s corrupt. Radio stations and record labels are now driven by the same few corporately controlled media companies that, again, pushes formula over art. Which isn’t to say that formulaic music hasn’t co-existed with substantive music throughout the ages. But I think a key difference is that formulaic music now far outweighs substantive music. You really have to work hard to find music of substance because it’s just not going to find its way on a Clear Channel radio station. And, Marlie, if you’ve noticed, it’s not just that the songs sound the same, but they do play the same number of songs over and over again.
So, I do find myself asking, “Do I really like Lady Gaga’s Poker Face song, or is it that it got played so many times, it’s grown on you? Do I really like Soulja Boy’s Swag On, or is it that I hear it everywhere so I’m bopping my head to it?” Keep in mind, no matter how many times I hear Black Eyed Peas’ Boom Boom Pow, it doesn’t get stuck in my head. Probably because I reach to change the channel. Some songs are just crap, and I’m not going to give them chance to “grow on me.”
In light of the current music scene, I do have to think of what you’re saying, Marlie, about how David might not be in the “right genre.” Except that David does want to make pop music. Well, he loves music, so he finds the gem in all kinds of music out there.
It was Desertrat who suggested David might have to part ways with Jive to make the music he wants, and I’m wondering about that. I know I’ve expressed my many frustrations, but so much of this has to do with the musical environment, which I find pretty toxic right now. When one sees an obvious precious flower like David, you do get a little concerned about whether or not he can grow and flourish if the soil around him is polluted, to use that kind of metaphor. David’s art needs the right kind of water and sunlight, not some genetically engineered planting that has replaced the organic garden. JMHO.
HG -- thanks for your post and the introduction to a new artist.
“MIA agitates, David soothes,” but both use music for something beyond the small world of celebrity. Interesting! I love your idea of David using the world music of countries that he loves to create some hybrid pop. I don’t know if you are thinking of something like Paul Simon’s collaboration with Ladysmith Black Mambazo but I would love to hear David’s voice over some soulful world music.
HG: Yes, Boom Boom Pow -- WTF? I find myself turning to XM 56 -- classic rock when I have finished the latest book on tape. And when I’m not listening to David, I seem to be listening to my old favorites (give me Renaissance or Supertramp or Peter Frampton on the wa-wa pedal -- that was enhanced, but it was enhanced for a reason!)
Are there still college radio stations out there? Those promoted the best of the current music back when I was in school (oh, so very long ago).
Watch for it………….. it is coming soon!
Abrra
Okay, I’m going to admit publicly that I also love some good smooth jazz -- Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau and will venture into country if it’s Bonnie Raitt, into New Age with Enigma and Secret Garden. So, perhaps I’m just a little too used to hearing something different….I should give this stuff the benefit of the doubt….NAH! NOPE! NOT! LOL
When David rocks the house LIVE, he has all the makings of a musical genius -- he IS a musical genius. I just hope he gets to put it out there as he grows and matures. I also think he’ll have to leave Jive at some point. And because he is such a positive person, David will never say anything about it, or complain, he will just move on when the time is right.
Liz, I think David could do something very similar to Paul Simon (whatever happened to him, btw?).
And, yes, Marlie, there are still college stations out there (one of my students is a DJ who introduced me to all kinds of new music). But, again, they are marginalized by the more corporate radio stations out there.
Thank God for the Internet (and even then, I’m seeing signs of how corporate media is slowly creeping into popular sites like You Tube, which pretty much admitted they had to “sell out” because they can no longer afford to maintain the site without ad space).
Its here! Go Now before it disappears!
Tio Tinto Merry Go Round
Hello Gorgeous- Great article!
I’ve been a big fan of MIA since her first album. I think she is one of the most original voices in hip hop/popular music today.
What is interesting about her is that prior to the Pinapple Express soundtrack she wasn’t really known in the mainstream music world.
I think it’s because her music is original and she’s hard to define. Like her song Jimmy. When I heard that I thought, there is no one out there in pop music like her.
I think David is also an original voice and he is hard to define. When you listen to songs like Somebody out there and Zero Gravity you can see he’s hard to put into the generic pop music box.
I think he’ll have a breakout hit similar to MIA with Paper Planes.
I just hope he is given enough artistic freedom on upcoming albums. My concern is that TPTB want to mold his sound into what’s popular and what they need to see is that he is an original voice that should be let free. It worked for MIA.

Abrra, that Merry go round is too funny. Is there any other artist out there who has inspired such obsessive disorders amongst their fans?
Mbmonchi, I would love for David to have a runaway hit like MIA did with Paper Planes. (You could say he already did with Crush. Let’s hope he can do a repeat with Zero Gravity.) I always thought it was a fluke the way that Paper Planes became so popular, thanks to the Pineapple Express soundtrack. Then, once people heard it, she gets a Grammy nomination AND an Oscar nomination working with Slumdog Millionaire and having that song featured in that movie.
I say “fluke” because, as much as I like Paper Planes, no way did that song deserve a Grammy nomination over a number of other (IMO) more superior songs from her Kala album (I think Bamboo Banga, Bird Flu, and $20 are much better). But, when a song is out there, that’s what gets the recognition, I guess.
So cool to find another MIA fan here!
HG
I have only just begun! I changed the music again on youtube LOL Hopefully it will last as long as the video.

Hi all!

and now I am going to check out MIA….
Abrra, loved the merry-go-round. David can even make nervousness look good. I enjoyed the lively debate yesterday. David evokes great passion in his adoring fans, me included. That soccer game proves how popular David is . This was essentially a David Archuleta concert rudely interrupted by a boring soccer game. He looked great, sounded great, and remains pop music’s most beloved figure.
Nice analogy, HG, to draw a parallel from two opposites. And, I vote for KING of POP; the KING has the broader power of change over a longer period of time.
Just a sidebar (Warning: extreme emotional content): Most of you know that my now 10 yo grand daughter has a rare genetic disorder with a life expectancy of 22. She is also the one who wallpapered a wall in her room with David photos, posters, magazine articles. Well, her birthday was two weeks ago and I gave her VIP tickets to her hometown David/Demi concert. She is over the moon, telling everyone--even strangers--of the concert; she is so focused on the July concert date with a myriad of dreams and plans, designing a tee shirt just for the event and rehearsing what she is going to say in her 10 seconds of meeting David (for the first time). The happiness and excitement is simply heart warming and and feels like we are all enveloped in one big warm, happy hug with her. So, in my small, little world, the Demi/David concert seems divinely designed for my grand daughter to fly high, soar happily even if for a short time and I will always be exceedingly grateful for this event.

“she is so focused on the July concert date with a myriad of dreams and plans, designing a tee shirt just for the event and rehearsing what she is going to say in her 10 seconds of meeting David (for the first time)”
That is so touching. I am also thrilled that she will live her dream to meet David.
Abrra
kizzi -- yes, divinely designed for your sweet granddaughter. What a moment that will be! Thanks for sharing that.
HG, what a wonderful post! And I think David would love nothing more than to be helping and inspiring as many people as he could from all corners of the world.
kizzi, your David/Demi concert with you granddaughter sounds like the absolute perfect evening. I will be thinking of you both on this day. She is very fortunate to have such a loving grandmother, as you are blessed to have received her as your grandchild. I think I now understand a little bit about where some of your amazing life affirming perspective comes from.
Kizzi, your post exemplifies how David brings joy before, during, and after any appearance and/or performance he gives. The very thought of seeing David begins the joyful experience, and it stays with you forever. Each ensuing experience acts as a “booster shot” to enhance the previous encounter. May your grand daughter enjoy these experiences over the course of many many years.
HG- Top 40 introduced a song this ;morning that’s climbing the charts called “Birthday Sex”.. now I’m as liberal as they come but this one’s really over the top. and musically it ain’t much. heard it again this afternoon and turned it off.
Thank goodness for my supply of David cd’s.
HG
Wonderful post on the current pop music scene and the potential for David to influence it. Lord knows it needs an infusion of something to give it life again. I have for years been saying to myself, (after I switch the radio off in disgust,) “I need a new music,” with no idea what it was I wanted it to be, and no reason to believe it would come to pass. Then David came along, and music means something again and has the power to move me again. I am constantly amazed by your knowledge and insight into the music world, and by your website, and always give a lot of credence to your take on these matters. So it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to know that you think David could influence music and become the “Ambassador of Pop.” It is a genre of music that we all grew up loving and has inspired so much bona fide talent and produced so many classics. It was legitimate pop. Now it is just canned tripe; take the labels off the cans and open them up and it all sounds the same. I think David can help make it legitimate again, and pave the way for more real talent out there to follow his lead.
kizzi
Your story of your granddaughter makes the Demi/David concert worthwhile, if only for the happiness in the life of one child.
Kizzi, it was heartwarming to read about your darling granddaughter and the beautiful day you have planned for her. Sweet memories for the both of you to share…to last a lifetime. After the big day, once you’ve had a chance to collect your thoughts, I’m sure all of us would love to hear the details.
Kizzi, that’s a really touching story about your granddaughter. Thanks for sharing it here, as I’m sure she will have a fabulous time at the David/Demi concert.
I also get where you’re coming from in wanting to vote for David as KING of pop. He’s not there yet, so I’m not ready to name him as such. This of course does not diminish my love David or even my vision for where he will eventually go with music.
Thanks, Angelica, for your kind and encouraging words in response to my post.
River, unfortunately I’ve already heard that “Birthday Sex” song -- SMH. Ugh! Horrible that, not only will young girls here such unimaginative lyrics and think this is supposed to be “seductive,” but there are whole groups of boys who will foolishly think that such trite, in-your-face proposition expressions are how they should be “romantic” with women. Pitiful!
Give me old-school R&B ANY DAY over this godawful noise pollution calling itself a “slow jam.” *Rolling my eyes.*
HG, thanks for such a thought-provoking post! I’ve been MIA myself lately, lol, so it was a timely one for me to come back to. Great discussion too, about the current state of music.
I read recently that Lady Gaga had to pound the pavement for months trying to get her first single to be played on Top 40 radio (hard to believe now, though, isn’t it?), because her club sound didn’t “fit in” on mainstream radio. Of course, now it’s set the new “standard” (for better or for worse) for dance-oriented playlists.
Mbmonbichi, I too can so hear one of David’s singles becoming a breakout hit like that (also as a result of his hard work) and setting a new — much higher, of course
— standard for Top 40.
{{{kizzi}}} Thanks so much for sharing your granddaughter’s story — that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? (Didn’t get a chance to mention how much I loved your Contact post … I’m sure I’ll appreciate it even more when I read the book & see the movie!)
HG -- Although I have heard Paper Planes, I knew nothing about MIA. Thanks for bringing this unique artist and her compelling personal story to our attention.
David, the Ambassador of Pop… what an intriguing idea! “If anyone can rejuvenate a “world” sound infused with his commitment to pop and soul, David is the one.”
You better believe it!!
Saw this at SA. David and his gaggle of girls.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Uw_M6ZbloQw/SixCm44v01I/AAAAAAAANro/uvYnVd30l8g/s1600-h/mg7.JPG
Where is he?
Hidden in the gaggle. That’s apparently how he goes around and does things with his friends. They all have their backs to him hiding him from view.
Gee, I’ve missed a lot. Just got caught up reading the last thread. Wow. More action than on the Real soccer field!
{{{ojs}}} congrats!!! Great timing, we need more Cdn David fans!!
And just now saw the news about Alex not going on the summer tour. A reminder of how hard life on the road can be. Sad about it, though, he added so much fun and warmth to each show.
Re. the Children Uniting Nations event where David will sing on Tue, 6/9:
“The entire event will also be streamed live on Swaggmedia.com, the leading web portal and social networking site with over 14 million viewers.”

Abrra,
Thanks for the merry-go-round;
The second song is perfect.
HG,
I like Ambassador better and love the idea of a multicultural musical mix. Third ou fourth CD maybe? With David getting increaginly involved in international charities he might get there naturally. How awesome that would be!
hello to everyone-- I just got caught up on the last two posts and must say that I agree with TOfan--”More action than on the Real soccer field!” and I was there last night!!
I’ll just say this about last night--David was superb!! I just can’t get enough of his renditions of the SSB. He loves this country and his heart is on his sleeve when he sings our national anthem. Then, his song set after was worth sitting thru the soccer game for(and I looovvveee soccer games--this one just didn’t go well). David’s voice, combined with the fireworks and sound system in that stadium, created a heart stopping 30 minutes.
When I sat in seat #19, I noticed the girl next to me had an orange CRUSH MS bracelet on, so I showed her mine and our conversation began. I almost dropped over when I found out she was Annalisa from DavidArchuletaItalia! She is without a doubt, a sweetheart! Lot’s of fun to talk to. Jenny from FOD was down the row a little ways, but I never went over to talk to her. I did point out to my husband what she was doing as she was cellcasting (he’s wondered in the past how they do it, so there he was seeing it in real-time).
Abrra--the merry-go-round works for me!! He was probably as frustrated as the rest of us that were waiting for the SSB--cutting thru all the dignitary, pre-game stuff was a little boring (except for the AirForce fly-by that nearly took our heads off--I thought Annalisa and I were going to hit heads as we nearly hit the deck). That could be part of the hopping he was doing--a little nerves and a lot of “could we get this thing moving(?), I’ve got a song to sing.”
Anyway, just thought I’d give a little summary of my thoughts on last night. I had an awesome date with my husband at the Daaavid Ar-chew-lett-ah mini concert/SLC Real soccer game.
tawna21, nice date night! And you met Annalisa! She is truly one of David’s biggest fans and seems like such a nice girl.
desertrat -- oh gosh, thanks for the info. I was so hoping for a youtube of this, but live, OMG! Am a little surprised there hasn’t been more buzz about this event on this and other sites. Isn’t this more the kind of prestigious events some have been hoping for him? I would imagine he is quite honored and excited to be doing this; and to hear him sing “Prayer of the Children,” I just think it will be incredible.
HG--although I have never listened to any MIA songs, I can, and do, appreciate the thoughts that you have posted. Your comparasions are enough to make me want to check her out some, but more importantly, it reminds me that not everything can be looked at thru Pollyanna eyes. The world is a hard place, and we are all here on this planet together. It’s different types of people, from different places on this planet earth, doing different types of “ambassador” work that will make a difference. That’s where David has been such an inspiration to me. He’s a ‘things need to be done--let’s get it done’ type of person. That is the example I need--’get a move on, girl, let’s get going, the clock is ticking!’
Thanks, HG.
We all need to start wishing on a star that there will be videos, of the Children Uniting Nations event on Tues. I just can’t even begin to fathom what David’s voice can/will do to Prayer of the Children. I heard Kurt Bestor sing this live, and I’ve never gotten over it. It’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I used to have the cd, but my daughter made off with it when she got married (guess she figured she liked it more than me--gotta love it).
I made a my first video tribute to David. Hope you enjoy. heh.
Kizzi- You’re post had me in tears. I hope your granddaughter has a wonderful time at the concert. ((Hugs))
Angelica- Your video is a whole lotta fun! I especially loved how you started it. It was really clever. Quoting HelloGorgeous- “Is there any other artist out there who has inspired such obsessive disorders amongst their fans?” lol
Tawna21- I went to the game too! And yes, the beginning was Boring! It was like: sorry, we don’t want to here YOU- we want to hear ARCHULETA! Though that big honking plane buzzing the stadium was something else.
HG- thanks for introducing me to M.I.A. I really enjoyed “Sunshowers”.
And, I’m in the camp of Ambassador Archuleta, but, I think he should be called Ambassador of Music. I know currently David wants to do pop, but, he is familiar with all types of music, save Beatles lol, and I believe in time, may dabble in several genres.
One more thing, as Rae has been keeping us informed, I’d like to share a few twitters that have popped up in a friendly rivalry that has developed between Mcfly fans and Archies.
“Why does David Archuleta have so many fans ugh. He was already famous on American Idol they should let Tom be famous on twitter”
“I think Archuleta’s fans are vampires. They never sleep. That must be it. We’re up against vampires.”
And this one is from Tom from Mcfly- “Well I went to bed as the leading Mr twitter universe and woke up a sloppy second! That darn Mr Achuleta.”
HG#9 -- “….my many frustrations, but so much of this has to do with the musical environment, which I find pretty toxic right now. When one sees an obvious precious flower like David, you do get a little concerned about whether or not he can grow and flourish if the soil around him is polluted, to use that kind of metaphor”
Interesting metaphor and really like this thread. Prime example of the creativity of TDC writers -- so “outside of the box”. Kind of a rarity in the so called media/press. Probably one of the reasons the newspaper industry is dying, as well.
“…. it really is a medium to connect an artist’s vision of the world with others. And, for me, I can accept these different visions, as long as the music moves me. I realize I don’t have to even share the same views of an artist, but if the art speaks on a different level, I can totally respect and even revere the expression.”
Just made me realize why I haven’t been able to listen to the radio, lately. Something’s been getting under my skin and this is it -- the “…pop music industry is squeezimg out individuality for some formula of what sells.” Thought maybe there was some hidden message (& I don’t mean in the lyrics) in the songs being played. Like Marlie said “…did they keep playing the same song over and over? Nope -- just that they all sounded the same….”
Also have MIA on my Zune player. Heard it (Paper Planes) last fall while on a roadtrip across Wyoming/Utah/Arizona. Can’t remember which state, probably Utah. Kind of surprised my family (sons & their wives) recently when we were watching Slumdog & I knew the song & artist. They thought I only listened to David -- hahaha!
For me music must be an emotional connection. It (the song/music) always calls out to me -- DLG (lyrics honestly; although that KLDLG is video heaven), Barriers, Save the Day, Somebody Out There. I get the same feeling inside as I do from watching a moving scene (movie, news, real life).
tawna#42 -- that song is so hauntingly moving & evocative. Would love to hear David sing it. Was thinking that Somebody Out There would deliver the message from the mentors to the children or is it too personal? The “….tenderness you need. Somebody to hold you, when worries control you.” Might not be appropriate, Iguess. Oh, but the rest of the song so expresses the void that needs to be filled. For some reason, I’m enthused about this event. Just not sure how available the footage of the event will be. Wish, wish, wish……

WOWZA! You did an awesome job on your tribute. It’s quite stylishness. Swanky song and an absolutely beautiful subject. Superior job on your first video!
Abrra
Not sure if this will work, but I’ll try it. At the end of the video, look at the age of the fans. Interesting how on the way in (see news clip on this site) all the fans are 12, but panning the crowd, they are not 12!

Angelica -- NICE NICE NICE NICE video! Why does he have to be soooooo pretty???
Good morning! Angelica, love the editing of your video! Good stuff!
Tawna21, thanks for the David Archuleta concert-disguised-as-soccer-game recap! Really enjoyed reading!
So glad to know I’ve got both a fan pack to purchase and an event to tune into tomorrow.
Kizzi -- I was going to say I hope your granddaughter has a great time at the concert, but I know she will! It’s the whole thing -- planning what to say, making t-shirts, just the anticipation in general that will make this so memorable. What a wonderful thing.
Angelica -- I can’t believe that this is your first video. It is very stylish -- love the perfect collection of images; both still and video. You caught many moods there. Chief among them is his passion. He’s got it.
It almost has a twenties vibe with the black and white at the end. Great song choice as well.
I am loving it!
“…4th Annual “Keeping the Promise to our Children” conference in Washington DC. Set for June 9th. Celebrities including Terrance Howard, David Archuleta, Gabrielle Union, Shawn King, Kristen Bell, Vivica Fox, Mos Def, Catherine Dent and many more, will join key legislators in a morning press conference held at the House Capitol Building with panel discussions following in the famous Woodrow Wilson Plaza located in the Ronald Reagan Building and an evening gala at the State Department.

#43 angelica -- nice job!
You have great taste, Angelica!
I love Terrence Howard and am thrilled he’ll be in the event with David. Hope they meet!
Angelica, you have found your element,(well, besides writing!) Great pics, love the song, and looove the b&w reel to reel look!
Hello gorgeous #18- I agree that some of the other songs on Kala are superior to Paper Planes. I think the album itself didn’t get the recognition it deserved.
Also I have to mention that I loved the metaphor that you used of David being a precious flower in polluted soil. I worry about that too but I think that he is like a beautiful lotus flower that can grow in the mud. He will flourish in the current pop world that is filled with mostly uninspired mediocrity.
Hey everyone! Does anyone know if the event in D.C. will be televised?
I can’t believe that I missed him in D.C. by one day! I totally would have stalked the area, as must as I legally could have!
just popping in and..OH MY!
Angelica #43~
WTH!! Are you trying to weed out the weak with that video!! Holy Moly..or as Dawn would say, “ok,that was too much”..LOL
Thank You~ SUPER job!
Abrra~
you crack me up..who else could inspire a one hop merry-go-round..but David Archuleta…in a uniform..too cute..LOVE it!
off to find more…ice..
Hi all -- loving catching up here, even tho’ it’s taking for-eh-vuh. I’ve been “unplugged” and on vaca, so I have a ways to go with all the posts and comments, but while I was away I heard this amazing song that is sooooo David! Just had to share--now HERE’s a tribute vid sound track if ever there was one!!!!! I wish there was a YT, but instead, it can be heard on Gorka’s site, here (scroll down to it):
http://www.rhapsody.com/john-gorka/tracks.html?pagestart=100
(you don’t have to join, just double click on the title and listen)
WHEN YOU SING
by John Gorka
(he wrote it by/for Mavis Staples, one of his “all-time favorite singers”)
When you sing
You make the world a better place
When you sing
You bring us closer to a state of grace
When you sing, when you sing
Do you know the joy you bring
When you sing?
- -- - -- - -- - -
[it's also exhorting everyone else to sing:
"Don't worry you can't make a sound
To please a stranger's ear
Do for others
And you sing sweet, loud and clear,
Sweet, loud and clear
You can sing with your hands
You can sing with your words
Sing with that still small voice
And still be heard...." ]
(on the CD “Writing in the Margins”)
Hmm, I think I’ll toss this one into the hat of “Songs in the key of David”!!
{{{{waves}}}} I’ve missed you all!!!
omg, GUH!!! Angelica #43 -- hawt hawt hawt!!!!!!!! [I retract my previous comment, now ***THAT's*** a tribute vid sound track!!]
Back to viewing… will try not to spam, although it’s so fun to be back here!
in real life, i’m the furthest thing from being the “warm & fuzzy” type.
however, i am stepping out of character to say that i know last saturday was a tough day; I really miss seeing all the familiar names and avis and hearing your opinions. if i might selfishly ask, please consider visiting again soon.
desertrat: my sentiments exactly! I suspect a lot are catching up with other parts of their lives in between the Rio Tinto event and the DC charity event. I hope!
Super high quality close up video of ATM at Rio Tinto Stadium. The sound echoes, but it is definitely worth seeing.
HG -- David sings about its eventual rejuvenation.
I listened to MIA, ok, but then you can blame David for ruining me. Everything else I hear is either horrible or ok in comparison to David’s music. I’m so ready for radio to get rid of all that crap they’re playing and calling it music and so ready to hear David on the radio.
desertrat/tawna -“…4th Annual “Keeping the Promise to our Children” conference in Washington DC. Set for June 9th.
I listened to the youtube performance, what a beautiful song… I get chills just imagining David singing this. I hope somehow this shows up on youtube. I wish it was getting more publicity. I think this appearance is deserving of that.
Angelica -- A first timer? What a outstanding job you did with this tribute. Little Archie? I don’t think so. You have captured what the majority see, a young man so talented that sings every song with such emotion and takes you on a marvelous ride with each and every song. And like you’ve shown, a natural sensuality that can’t be faked, the real thing. No one out there that comes close to David….IMO.
desertrat -- I really miss seeing all the familiar names and avis and hearing your opinions. if i might selfishly ask, please consider visiting again soon.
You’re not being selfish…and I don’t know if I’m included in the familiar group you mention, but I have been MIA. This is a special and unique fansite dedicated to all things David.
I’ll join desertrat, please consider visiting again soon!
dja -- May I attach myself to your last post, you covered everything beautifully.
Abrra -- is the Somebody Out There on the solo tour CD from SLC?
I am so happy this one was put on the CD because it is absolutely incredible. Have been playing it over and over!
Hey Guys! What a day this has been! There was a vandalism that occurred at my workplace, with various racial, homophobic, and woman-hating slurs -- with some swastikas thrown in -- scrawled on our office doors and throughout the bulletin boards in the hallway. Just terrible! We’re all pretty shaken up about it.
I guess that’s why I love David and enjoy M.I.A. tossed in on the side. I need the love, the joy, the calm, the peace, while the political agitator reminds me that the dark side is still there, with the light (if David represents that) always there to guide us out of the darkness.
Sigh. It’s been a long day.
Wow! I’m so sorry to hear that HG! What an ugly thing to have experienced.
emmiegirl -- Thank you very much.
I found this information regarding the Keeping the Promise to Our Children event.
http://www.cun2009.org/Packet.PDF
Thanks, Liz. It’s a “Be Still My Soul”/”Angels”/”Somebody Out There” kind of evening for me.
Can’t wait for the itunes version of “A Thousand Miles” to add to the mix.
So sorry to hear about this, HG! That is so awful. Does your institution have a hate speech policy? I hope the people (students?) can be found and appropriately disciplined.
Freo, I was wondering if it were students -- somebody who found access since the building is inaccessible on the weekends except through card-swipe for those of us with offices in there. And yes, we do have a hate speech policy. The police are already investigating the incident as a hate crime.
HG #68 -- Some of my favorites for comfort. Thank you David!
HG: I’m so sorry that you had to go through that. Yes, a little David music to cleanse the soul. {{{{{{HG}}}}}}
knotliser #62 GORGEOUS video of David -- wow, it’s like you could touch him it’s so close. Thanks!
Djafan, someone by the name of lulu posted a comment on my Soul Blog (the one that features David’s “Be Still My Soul” video). She left her email for you to contact her: wendyluhardy@yahoo.com.
She also says she’s having trouble logging in to TDC?
Just passing on information here.
{{{Marlie}}} thanks for the hugs.
If anyone has trouble logging in, they should just send me a note in the contact page (at the very top of any TDC page) and I will help them get logged in.
hg, so sorry to hear about the events today at your workplace. This kind of ugliness can be so disheartening and unsettling.
Gift yourself a completely relaxed and peaceful evening.
HG -- thanks….
She’s got the wrong djafan… but I did give her some suggestions on how to sign in to TDC.
knotliser -- great video… hoping they have the rest of the performances.
HG..No one should have to go through what you described. It’s a violation of the soul, just to see that kind of hatred & destruction, and I’m sorry you had to see it up close.
Here’s a video of the song written by David, Fighting For You.
Why he hasn’t recorded it is beyond me…
Hi everybody,
Just poking my nose in here after being away pretty much since the move from NotingDavid. Glad to see a lot of the old familiar names. My real-life Idol blog commitments made it tough for me to post comments much, but I’m in the off-season now so it’s all good.
I mentioned to a colleague at work that it’s been a year after Season 7 of Idol ended and yet the the intensity of the fanbase for Archie is still going pretty strong. So many of us are just as impressed and devoted now — if not more so — than a year ago (actually 16 months ago).
I know it makes the only-good-news fans nervous, but I’m concerned about two things this summer:
- The concert pairing with Demi was not my favorite when it was announced and now that ticket sales are poor in some places, I’m even more convinced it was a mistake. I got 10th-row seats on the first morning they went on sale (Seattle) and if I go to ticketmaster now, you can get 19th row. Um, that means not many tickets have sold, and at $62 a pop with all fees, I can totally understand that.
I’m a firm believer that you can’t go back and change history so no sense griping about it now, but what CAN we do to spin this the right way and make the most of it? Maybe more of the tour stops will offer cheaper tickets?
- Then there’s “Zero Gravity,” which should be available on iTunes within a few hours. I hope it captures the bounciness of the live versions. But as I understand it, this won’t be pushed to radio stations like “Crush” was. So tell me: How is this going to be the big hit that a lot of fans think it has the potential to be? Simply via iTunes? I don’t get it.
What do you guys think? Am I worrying too much?
~ CD
Oh, CaseyDog, you are just fanning the fire LOL. You might want to go read the last thread -- whew! I think there are a lot of people here who can say they feel the same way that you do about the David/Demi pairing.
And yeah, what’s up with Jive and the iTunes only release of ZG -- inquiring minds want to know
Tidbit of news -- Kris Allen signed with Jive today.
HG,
I’m sad about what happened to you. I pray God may keep you and your colleagues safe under his wings. I can’t begin to understand so much hatred.
Last Saturday I tried to watch a film entitled “Funny Games” but it disgusted me. It’s about two spoilt rich young men who have fun torturing families in a resort town. About two hours later I ended up on HBO again as I zapped through channels , unable to find anything worth my time. I happened to see the ending of the film and was even more horrified by the sheer evil exuding from it. What’s the point of portraying such violence? Have you guys seen it? What’s this world coming to? I wish there was something one could do about this type of ‘entertainment’ as it desensitises youngsters and cheapens human lives. Freedom of expression they say. Yeah, right!
Can’t wait for my ray of sunshine tomorrow. Go David and spread the love! Sorry for the negativity.
Hi Casey! Are we worried? Well some of us are, yes. Speaking of poor ticket sales, in some of the venues, like AC for example, go to Ticketmaster now and you can get tickets on the floor, 8th row. Or in my city..gosh I don’t even want to say…And we have three BIGGIES coming here..Miley, the JB’s and Taylor Swift. Pretty stiff competition. David’s solo venues are doing pretty well though! Imagine THAT! I don’t want to come across as a negative fan, but if some fans don’t get WHY I’m not thinking “rainbows & unicorns”, they must have blinders on. And it’s not about David, since it’s not “his concert”, but it will affect David in the long run. God, I hope I am sooooo wrong and I have to eat my words after it’s all said & done. Either way, I will see David several times this summer…so before I get bashed, I’ll say..
Good night all, and for David..
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Watch over him, protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his Archangels do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he’s weary. Give him the stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey. Keep David and and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born. And please Lord, give us, David’s forever fans, the wisdom to know when and how to do right by David. Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests. May his positive and good Karma continue to attract those with positive and good Karma! May he continue to encounter goodwill and happiness! May he continue to be healthy and strong wherever his journey leads him. Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray. Amen
David, hope you have a good night & sweet dreams. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts! We will always love you madly!
Contigo siempre con amor!
Hello everyone, dropping in to post a link to vote for David on the Twitterwall. He is listed under each country, but please especially vote for him in the US, thanks.
http://tweeterwall.mallplace.com/
I hope to get caught up on the threads of the past few days soon.
Hey Guys,
Caseydog, I never understood the Demi tour setup. First, it really should be at 4-6K seat venues -- she is not on the level of JB or Miley. Second, it should have been a double bill with David. A couple weeks ago I noticed David isn’t even included at all on the online ads they were running. Why not??? His fanbase is certainly a bit different than hers, although she is so Disney that I doubt even a double bill would pull some of David’s Latino, young adult, or older fans. The one thing to remember is this is DEMI’s tour. Half the time people don’t even know who an opening act is when they go to a concert. He should not be to blame for poor sales, just as it was not because of him that the McFly gigs sold out (even though he sure won those crowds over, hehe).
The thing that irks me more than this though is I have this nagging feeling that David may start to be put on the back burner for the new Idols JIVE has signed (Kris and reportedly Allison Iraheta). Last night I noticed Jeff tweeted David Hodges (one of the writers of “Crush”) to see if he had any songs for David. Hodges didn’t respond to Jeff, but he did tweet yesterday that he had been working on a song with Kris Allen. I still don’t get why Jeff would be tweeting what is basically David’s business dealings, but that’s a whole other can of worms!!!
LittleM, I imagine that’s why David’s second album is due out next year since this coming fall, I’m sure will all be about Kris and Allison getting their albums out. Remember when David’s album came out, Jordin, who was signed the year before, had her second album coming out this year. So, I don’t know if it’s so much about being put on the backburner, as it is scheduling all these Idol artists.
What WILL be interesting to observe is if Allison, who is 17, follows the same trajectory that they have laid out for David. Allison may be younger than David, but there is absolutely nothing about her style or her voice that suggests TWEEN marketing.
I too will leave that Jeff twitter thing alone. Why would he make such a request so publicly anyway?
HG Thanks for introducing us to MIA, another example of music with a message. And I share your vision of David being an ambassador of Pop to all countries of the world. So sorry for the bad day you had; what a horrible thing to have experienced.
You asked about Paul Simon. He’s still giving concerts. A friend of mine saw him a year ago at The Brooklyn Academy of Music which sponsored his show “Paul Simon: American Tunes.” Here’s a link if you wish to read more about the show.
http://dithob.blogspot.com/2008/04/paul-simon-american-tunes-at-bam.html
Angelica: Wonderful job on your video! David is a fan of Christine Aguilerra’s so I’m sure he’s well familiar with that song. Beautiful shots of David. I love your eye! Your vision of David is as beautiful as your writing.
knotliser: ATM never looked so good to me! The echo is forgotten because the video is crystal clear. Thanks!
Angelica-- I love your video. It creates a lot of beautiful thoughts. Are you sure this is your first? It’s really good!!
Thanks, Bebereader! Caseydog, you may be pleased, or not, that you are not alone in your worries.
SF, thanks so much for that Fighting for You song.
It’s now time for me to call it a night. G’nite all!
HG -- I heard through the rumor mill that Allison is working with Pink’s A&R team -- I think her marketing will be much more mass than to just the tween set (like Pink or Kelly Clarkson). She does have a edgy persona that seems to fit in with this genre…Nite!
Bebereader -- Paul Simon was on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show the other night. He played a little with Steve Martin. You know I had a crush on him when I was little…just thought he was such a cute little guy with a sweet voice and disposition -- guess I have a type?
He’s older now but still cut.
oops…I meant he’s older now but still cute
Everybody, Zero Gravity and A Thousand Miles are now available on iTunes!
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=318396619&s=143441
Just listened to ATM… very bare -- just David and the piano in one take I think. Poi-fect. ^_^ Very nice touches as well =D
I’m LOVING ATM! Now to Zero Gravity!
goboywonder #83--whatever happened with Mr. Universe Twitter? I never could get in to vote after their website had issues.
knotliser--I think the echo, that you mention in the video, could have to do with the fact that the speakers were HUGE!! and it was in the stadium. It sounded so awesome live. I’ll bet the police officers that were directing stadium traffic could hear it over the cars. In fact, I could actually feel it as I took lame pix with my lame camera. Note to self: it’s time for a better one.
HG--I am sooo sorry for your horrible experience. It makes my heart hurt to be reminded that that kind of stuff really does happen. I hope your evening has been kind to you.
ronaldsf91/92- perhaps a review post from you is in order…
HG- {{hugs}}
Check out goodsearch.com-- if you purchase the bundle thru there (itunes is listed as one of the stores) then part of the proceeds goes to David’s charity. I saw this on FOD this morning.
Wooooooooo, ZG is the stage version -- but in the studio. It’s great!
tawna21, last time we checked David was ahead by 1500 votes as the clock ticked down! It’s so great that it looks like he won, and he never sent out a single tweet about it, while his opponents tweeted and tweeted and tweeted…
Okay, my review?
ZERO GRAVITY -- I can’t judge it fully right now because I’m on my laptop, and so I can’t hear the full power of the song. The mix definitely ups the drama over the demo and is VERY danceable
I especially love the pick-up into the 2nd chorus, and the bridge is very suspenseful/exciting. I’m wondering though whether they let David lay down another vocal, because this might be the one he recorded last fall. Not sure… (if so, it would probably would’ve made more sense to have him re-record it after firing up the song this spring.)
One of the posters at IDF said that he’s listening to it with his subwoofer and it sounds amazing! A good dance beat really needs strong bass and so I’m looking forward to that chance!
A THOUSAND MILES… Ahh, I’m definitely loving this. This is David’s simplest recording ever (and I’m including his childhood days) -- it sounds like it was simply him and the piano, done in one uninterrupted take. And so the interplay between piano and voice is natural and organic. David adds those subtleties to his vocal, softens and sweetens, pleads and yearns, at different moments. He does things toward the end that we haven’t heard before, once again showing us he is always experimenting trying to surprise and deliver for his fans. =D
This bare approach is perfect for the song. Its simplicity makes it feel very intimate… like he’s singing privately to you in a room.
I listened to Vanessa Carlton’s version just now and I must say I’m sorry -- David stole another one! =D
I’m very happy that Jive released these two songs together -- they really showcase David’s diverse talents: songwriter, pianist, vocalist, song interpreter, balladeer, and club king =D What a great showcase, and I’m going to send this to a bunch of people who need to get with the program. =D
HG
How ghastly for you and your friends. So sorry you were a victim of that kind of senseless hatred.
Thanks to all for the positive feedback on my video tribute. I started out doing something sweet, but after looking at so many pics of him, I kinda lost that vision. Hah.
To tell the truth, I have gradually come to see a pattern in my writing and now too, with this video. We all have been given this blessing of “getting” David, and I have always been a believer that with great blessings come great responsibilty. For each of us, it is different, but all contribute something. For my own part, I want him to be taken seriously. Yes, he is adorkable, but there is a danger in that view that will not do. He is so much more…more, I think, than even he knows. He is a sensitive, sensual being who has an incredible facility for producing intense feelings in those who experience his art, which encompasses much more than his unparalleled voice.
I feel at times compelled to take up arms against the forces that would diminish that, and in consequence diminish him. If I venture too far in the other direction, away from the sweet, cutsie pie I see being served up for consumption, I do so with the best of intentions. Time, at least, is on my side.
marlie7, you think it was the stage version? I didn’t, but I could be wrong (it’s just that the first part sounded very similar)
ronaldsf: By that I meant that it included the full bridge that was left out of the demo. It seems like the “whole song”. I have a couple of versions -- one is 1:47 long, one is 3:15 and this new one is 3:27. Only this one has the bridge.
ronaldsf: It might even be just a tiny bit faster beat than the other two.
Just purchased the fan bundle….it’s downloading!
marlie, betsy, abrra, bebe, betsy and I were thinking that we should gift these to all our local radio stations….
Angelica -- love your post and you video.
desertrat -- what happened Saturday? I’ve been away for days--just back this morning--still can’t catch up, quite. Apologies for being MIA, but life does get in the way sometimes! (Mostly fun stuff tho’!)
About that Jeff tweet (littleM, #84) -- didn’t someone purloin Jeff’s account? Are we sure that it’s really Jeff now?
HG -- so sorry to hear that -- hugs to you. Hope the offending graffiti is removed soon, and your spirit is soothed sooner.
ronaldsf -- thanks for the heads up and the reviews… I’m off to buy! (will try that goodsearch.com)
Ronald, I agree with you, I’m loving ATM too. It’s so refreshing to be able to really hear his voice, nothing but his voice and the piano, and ah, yes “he does things toward the end that we haven’t heard before, once again showing us he is always experimenting trying to surprise and deliver for his fans.”
I always seem to have something to say or share when it’s right at that moment a new feature article or editorial is going up and I can’t quite know where’s the best place to post. I started to write here but went to the new editorial post but then came back here, so here it goes and if no one is here tomorrow, then I’ll repost there(!) I wanted to share the following:
I didn’t see this info posted at the Making “Contact” thread when anxiety was running high regarding David’s management decisions in general and the Archuvato tour in particular. I want to share parts of a very long but informative post by Lisa (I am guessing soundscene at IDF but I could be wrong) that I read on the comments board at that Rodney Ho (Atlanta(?) Idol blogger) site. Btw, Dawn65, you were very funny there!
“… David Archuleta played a solo tour in venues from 1000-2200 (with 2 shows in Utah seating 4000-6000) seats earlier this year. All but one show sold out–and the one that didn’t sell out was a last minute added show in Utah that still sold 4000 seats. This is the type of venue that these artists can sell. Not just David A., but David C., Jennifer Hudson, Kellie Pickler, Kelly Clarkson (who, herself, has had bad press over past failure to sell arenas well), etc. In this economy, unless you’ve got a big machine to finance an arena (or half-arena) tour, you don’t do them. Idol has a big machine to finance it, and it has the hype surrounding the #1 TV show in the US.
Disney also has a big machine. Disney-owned Hollywood Records is pretty much the only label that sends its young artists out on arena tours. They do this because their backed by Disney, which has the money to do it. Sony Records, owners of Jive Records, David A.’s label, does not have that kind of money. They would not send any of their newer artists on tour like that. And if they did, the artist would have to pay back a lot of the cost of the tour. David A., David C., Kelly C., Daughtry, etc.–they all PAY for their own tours. Daughtry made the comment after touring for a year and a half after his season ended that he barely broke even. But he did it to get himself out there.
So here’s the choice for David A.–tour more on his own dime, or make a profit off of a Disney-funded arena tour that will get him in front of an audience that, if you can grab them, will buy a lot of albums. That’s why he’s opening for Demi Lovato (you don’t need to know who she is–your kids already do). It’s not because he’s less successful (he’s not), but because her label has the money to fund a tour like this, and his doesn’t. That’s why Jordin Sparks is opening for the Jonas Brothers. The options for David A. as an opener were limited. There were less summer tours this year due to the economy, and then you have to match him with an artist that makes sense. Miley Cyrus, although she sells more tickets, isn’t touring until the fall. The Jonas Brothers only have female openers. Demi Lovato, who is clean-cut, who plays guitar and piano, who writes her own songs, was touring. Her TV show is just becoming really popular right now. John Mayer loves her and collaborated with her on 2 songs on her forthcoming album. Jon McLaughlin collaborated on another one. She’s a musician and she’s a teenager–it was a perfect fit. And David A. would stand to actually make money touring. For the record, this tour is selling well in other areas. It’s a 43-city tour. It’ll sell better in some areas than others–just as the AI8 tour will sell better in some areas than in others…”
I certainly don’t know how big of an industry expert she is but she sounds more knowledgeable about the music business than any of David’s fans around, including myself. I too was not thrilled when I first heard about the pairing with Demi L. but I feel better about it now. Even though David is not about making gobs of money, he does need to make some, and I am very happy for him that he “would stand to actually make money touring” and very likely sell more albums as a result.
She also said “Fairs are different than arena tours–far less pressure. Usually, the artist gets paid a flat fee regardless of ticket sales, and fairs get a lot of same-day walk-ins.”
The entire post is really worth reading but this touches on some of the whys of the management decisions. What do you think? I know some may argue that there is no rush to make money touring, just take the time to make a great second album (and parts of me don’t disagree) but I think the music business is so fickle and unpredictable that we as bystanders can not possibly know what is indeed the best thing to do at any one point or what is so wrong to do for his career.
HG, I am really sorry to hear about the horrible things that happened at your university today, I mean yesterday. That is truly disturbing. I hope you are getting a good night’s rest and wake up to a better day tomorrow, I mean today. G’nite all.
Good morning!
Just got my gift from TeamArchie!
Yay! That’s a bit more like it.
I’ll be all fangirly today.
YAY Daaaaaviiiiid!
Ok. ATM is precious,ZG much better than the demo version, though I miss certain touches from the live version, like the more powerful ending, for instance, and TMH is love!
Have agreat day, everybody
* TMH # 5 on music videos*
Vermeer, I’ve always understood the financial incentive in setting up David with Demi. Our arguments are more idealistic -- the artistic integrity of David -- but that’s neither here nor there.
Labels/management will do what they will do what they must.
Not at all surprising that this is a money-saver for David (has Jive ever gone into anything willingly shelling out the cash -- even on itunes, not a single ad about David’s fan pack. If the fans didn’t clue me in, I wouldn’t even know.)
Good morning, everyone!
Vermeer, thx for the post. If accurate, it clears up some issues for me. I’ve read that labels act somewhat like banks. They will assist artists w/some upfront costs but ultimately, the artists must pay them back the loan plus interests. Artists make most of their money via tours and merchandise sells, not record sales.
I learned this on the show Behind the Music when the female group, TLC, explained their bankruptcy. In brief, the lead singer became ill during tours, so many of their shows were canceled. TLC rec’vd practically nothing from their millions of album sales. They didn’t tour long enough to recover the costs associated w/setting up the tour (eg, promotions, travel, venue rental fees, etc.)
Valbraz, glad the fan pack reached you in Brazil!
Hello Highervibe!
REMINDER
Children Uniting Nations streamed live beginning 8am EST
I Hopes it incl. David’s performance.

#63 djafan, glad to see u back. I was just a little concerned because yesterday, no one had posted on this blog for ~6 hrs.
HG, sorry to hear about the incident on your campus yesterday and I hope they make a break thru in the case.
vermeer: Thanks for the reference to that post. Early on when we first learned of David’s tour with Demi, I read that she was trying to change her image with this next album, produce a more mature sound. And, come on, if she collaborated with John Mayer, I feel like I have to give her a chance to release the album and see what she makes of it.
In this tight economy and with the fickle nature of the music business, I think it would be deadly to David’s career if he stayed home for the summer and wrote and worked on the CD.
Hey Caseydog! Nice to see you here! Come back and visit often.
Yes, agree with your thoughts about the tour this summer. Others here have voiced my same concerns so well so I won’t rehash.
Nice to see you caseydog, don’t be a stranger.
vermeer -- really appreciate the post! The music biz is one tough cookie! Seems patience and diligence is key.
Loving my fan bundle! Mild surprise I like ZG so well, especially after hearing the live version so many times. And what can you say about ATM…
(it was suggested on SA to go to your equalizer on itunes and change ZG to dance and ATM to acoustic, awesome results. Haven’t yet, but will give it a go tonight. So anxious for his performance tonight. Hope we somehow get to see it, seems there are problems accessing the site, drat!)
I am so proud of David. I could just burst. The Children Uniting Nations Project is so HUGE!
And dinner with Russell Simmons and Terrance Howard last night?
EEk! I am terribly excited.
He sure is an ambassador of something, all right.
Ambassador of Hope.
- I love you David.
Completely random post to follow, please bear with me:
Okay, this is going to sound really strange and out-of-left-field but I’ve actually been thinking about this for a while now.
I think we need more YouTube videos WITHOUT DAVID IN THEM.
Not completely David-less, mind you. The new ZG or ATM should be playing in the background. But something else, anything else, in the foreground. (Think Rascal’s beautiful SOT vid.)
Not that I don’t enjoy all the amazing fan tribute vids (Angelica, LOVED your last one!) but you can’t exactly send them to your boss, if you know what I’m saying.
If I knew how to create one I would, so this is a plea to those of you brilliant, creative techno-wizards out there to create some non-David David vids that can be passed around the Internet like virtual TicTacs.
And then, next thing you know, everyone’s asking, “Who IS that amazing new Voice in the background?”
(Or, if there’s a nincompoop-proof program I could actually figure out myself, please let me know.) Sorry, guys, I’m done now.
Cool idea, Tofan!
105/ hi vermeer…. you can take soundscene, or lisa’s word to the bank… she is extremely knowledgable about many aspects of the industry -- both front and back end operations, and is a great source of information about how the radio industry works… i think she is an attorney by trade, and i can say she’s been the one person who has educated me the most in understanding and grasping most of the wonky and mind numbing data pertaining to record charting, strategy, etc. she’s a dedicated david fan, and i’m glad she is on our team -- her knowledge is formidable, and relayed in a way easily understood…
You want the new ZG and ATM Tofan? Hmmmmm….sans David, huh? I’ll let you know if I can come up with something.
TOfan -- #114 Excellent idea. I am doing an experiment on Saturday. I am going to play ZG before my presentation in Chicago and ATM after. Rev ‘em up w/ZG and then cool ‘em down w/ATM. No pix or vids of him. Just music. I plan to take video clips of the audiences’ reaction and we will see how the music impacts the audience. I’ll let you know the results of the experiment.
Oh, and tx everyone for the kind words about about my g-daughter
Emmiegirl -- I believe you and I have similar perspectives in life. {{{{HUGS}}}}

David’s new vlog is just making me laugh! “Who is the fairest of them all?” That’s one tired guy!
Fellow Canucks… anyone! Does anyone know when the fanpack will be available on Canadian iTunes???
“If I knew how to create one I would, so this is a plea to those of you brilliant, creative techno-wizards out there to create some non-David David vids that can be passed around the Internet like virtual TicTacs.”
Thanks for the challenge, TOfan. I’m certainly up for it. Give me some time!
Is it just me, or is David really really into the fan pack? ha ha! He rarely promotes anything that’s coming out by him, so this multiple messages to go buy his fan pack, plus his sustained conversation with various fans about their reactions to it -- not to mention how much he’s so excited by the whole thing, he’s ready to sleep on it, Hmmmm.
Something tells me proceeds are going to a big big cause with this one. Or, is it that he’s anxious for the label to promote Zero Gravity?
Either way, I’m so glad I was able to buy it immediately -- loving the two songs!
Still need to see his performance at Children Uniting Nations.
Kizzi #118 I can hardly wait to see those fan reaction videos!
Prayers for your granddaughter.
HG am waiting longinly for Prayer of the Children, and am sure this Angels will be even more heartfelt.
#125 Marlie -- Thanks for cleaning up my mess! LOL I was just excited to share that adorable vlog with everyone. He’s so stinking cute sometimes, he just slays me!
*Scratches head.*
Now, David lets us know his TMH music video is #1 on iTunes. So happy for him!
HOWEVER!!
This is so unlike him to be caught up in:
1. Promoting his fan pack.
2. Creating a vlog specifically to promote his fan pack.
3. Focusing almost exclusively on this fan pack while hardly mentioning the event he’s doing for Children Uniting Nations.
*Scratches head some more.*
I sincerely hope he’s not feeling the pressure from his label/management. If they’re smart, they’ll realize David could sell big time if they, you know, invested more in his promotion.
Then again, this really IS all about the fans, so in that case, it’s still vintage David thinking about everyone else but himself.
So, the Mirror told him he’s “the fairest of them all,” huh?
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
He’s preciously funny…
Where is everybody anyway?
*waves*
Is anybody else here?
You guys are the best!!! {{{hugs}}} Can’t wait to see the vids you come up with!
HG, I too sense ZG is special to David … like he’s sending it off for its first day at kindergarten! lol
Awestruck, I’m biting my nails too waiting for word on Canadian iTunes. If I hear anything I’ll let you know. Where’s that Free Trade Agreement when you need it?
(Nice to see you back, caseydog! *waves*)
TOfan…If you see anything before any of the other canucks do in regards to the Fan Pack for Canada…then please give a little announcement here…
The vlog was…PRICELESS…He has an imagination that works overtime and he is so much fun…Maybe someday there will be a Disney movie about David’s journey…
SB

djafan…Hi! Thanks for the Fan Pack info. and I will go there tonight…
I have been closely watching and enjoying Twilight and now New Moon movie and vids.
So we have David Archuleta, fantastic singer…with Zero Gravity…and Edward & Bella.
This is for you djafan…
djafan…the video misses out on the actual Edward and Bella flying scenes…but I like it…
SB
Thank you SandyBeaches!
I loved it….loved it.
hmmmmmm……lol
See you later.
Bye for now dja…I am going to comment to the person who did the video and mention about the scenes where he taught her to fly…it is so fitting for Zero Gravity…maybe she can edit it in…
SB
Hold it dja…can you make a video and add the flying scenes that would coordinate with Zero Gravity and make it a wonderful video?…If not then Abrra could or Angelica could or happy could…you guys are all so talented…
Taking dogs for a walk…later then…
It’s on…hoping we get to see David sing.
http://www.onenetplace.net/silverlight.aspx
SandyBeaches…Angelica seems to be the pro…I’m at pictures only sofar….lol
djafan Thanks for the info. I would hate to take away a gifted fan pack from someone who cannot purchase it. I will wait til Canadian iTunes has it… waiting ever so patiently -- NOT!
emmiegirl . June 8, 2009 at 8:10 pm .

New note on the Children’s Streaming site -- Not streaming the Gala
That sucks…..praying for video!
You’d think they’d what some publicity for their event….
What a wasted opportunity for them…
Maybe--just maybe--Jeff will be able to video the gala and then post it
Once again, I’m wishing on a star for it to happen
I can’t stop chuckling over David’s vlog--he is soooo tired! Hopefully, he’ll be able to sleep better tonight.
tawna21 are you from Wallsburg? Just curious… I think that a few people twittered Jeff yesterday and asked him to film it for us so hopefully he will.
I loved the fairest one of them all… If only he knew that is what we think about him!
gemzone01--Springville--are you from Wallsburg?
It’s so hard to realize David is performing now and we can’t see or hear it—HELP!
Love David’s last tweet:
“Wow, in the State Department Building for the event tonight. It’s like a museum! So many cool antiques.”
Cool antiques? The furniture or the guest list?
Funny Tofan! That got a pretty good laugh out loud out of me!
Tofan#156 ROTFLMAO!
I am really loving the Touch My Hand video. The song and video just gets better and better. I love how David smiles through the video!
awestruck #149…I am going to wait as well for the Canadian iTunes to come through with the Fan Pack…but, I wonder how long will it take dang it…?…Patience…just haven’t quite got that virtue..
Good evening all! I’ve been hovering around for a while, catching up on all things David
QUESTION: I know this is late, but I’ve been wondering for a while…Why is David referred to as bb? I first saw it at Snarky’s and don’t know what it stands for.
Loving the fanpack. Planning to fall asleep tonight (shortly!) to A Thousand Miles!
Rapture: I have wondered that myself, but thought of two things it might stand for…ballad boy, or baby. Don’t know which, but with Snarky’s it could be either one. LOL
rapture 161- i asked that very same question of the snarky’s girls at tribeca…
they told me “baby boy”
SB #160 Patience is not my virtue either. I’ve been out tonight, got back and checked Canadian iTunes… still not there. I’ll check again in the am.
jeffarchuleta just got back from event at the State Dept. in DC. David closed the show, sang Imagine on piano and a capella “Prayer of the children”
“Imagine” on piano and acapella “prayer of the children”?
Are you kidding me? There better be video/audio!
I tweeted jeff and begged him for video!
I have no shame!!
jeffarchuletaAnyone interested in seeing the video???
Thanks for your reply girls!
happy I didn’t realize the Snarky girls were at the TriBeCa event. Somehow I thought they were mid-country somewhere. I would like to have met them!
Goodnight, heading off to bed with 1,000 miles of smiles!
betsy Did Jeff ask: Anyone interested in seeing the video??? or are YOU asking?
Thanks for the update.
jeffarchuletaSorry, I know that was a pretty obvious question…. I’ll see what I can do….
Betsy
who has taken up Abrra’s postion as spammer
There is video!!!!!!
rapture- not THE snarky’s girls…just snarkys girls… lol
tawna21 no I am from Orem but I drove Annalisa to the soccor game and then took her home. I know she was sitting next to itto and walls so I thought you might be walls. Anyway nice to meet another Utah County Archie.
Excited that Jeff did video might just have to stay up until it is uploaded.
Hope I’m in the right place! I have been reading the posts on the pros and cons of David graduating high school. I ran across this post on another site and it rang true to me, so I thought I’d put it out there because it reflects my thoughts on the subject.
“I think that David should not worry about high school. One of the main purposes of education is to find your talents and develop them. I think he has that going on!
Another main purpose of education is is to learn to earn, certainly not the most important thing in life but it is in the top three and education gets blamed for anyone who fails to learn to earn!
I think David has this going on too, and if his singing doesn’t last the music industry would love to have him in other capacities.
It is time for everyone to face the facts that David has outdistanced anything that education can offer him. He should get on with life.
Consider this: Some students attend a christian school that is not accredited. they work hard and get a good education and when they apply for college the admissions office (pay attention now and read to the end) the admissions office says we can’t recognize your high school diploma … so take the GED test, which they pass with ease, and then take the college admission test and get in BECAUSE THEY WORKED HARD and learned.
So an unaccredited diploma does not stop the successful, and David’s lack of a diploma should not stop him. He can probably PASS THE GED TEST RIGHT NOW, and then get on with life.
He’ll be fine.” (Written by Golferguy )
David, could no doubt have passed an equivalency test with the help of a little refresher course via tutor. He probably has almost enough credits to graduate (which makes me wonder how many he needs to graduate.) My granddaughter graduated high school 6 mos early, because she had accumulated enough credits to do so. With his grades up til now, I’m sure with a little elbow grease put towards education (and a little help from school administration) this could be this could be accomplished in short order.
I am probably very late posting on this subject, sorry, as I haven’t been able to read TDC for several days.
So is there video?
djafan Jeff twittered that he has video.
OMG…. Please post tonight so I can sleep…
Thanks gemzone01!
Okay, TOfan and others, here’s my David without David ZG video (yes, I spent all evening and night putting it together -- quite therapeutic, actually, since it kept my mind off of more troubling things). Enjoy!
HG: WOW -- fabulous!
Thanks, Marlie.
Now I’m good and tired. It’s time to call it a night.
G’nite all!
Had to come out of lurkdom and compliment hellogorgeous. BRAVO!!! I hope your video gets TONS of hits on youtube!
P.S. Being creative is something David brings out in people. I hope you received your “therapy” while creating it.
HG —- Great job…. I love the views of approaching earth from space.
HG -- WOW! Now that was a visual experience -- a MUST view for full screen. Loved the psychedelic & outer space parts. This song really has tons of potential in various media -- IMAX?
You know, I heard the demo of ZG by Lim (of Jackie Boyz) last year (after the interview with Mike K). I didn’t really care for it. But once David sung it…. That’s a whole different song. I luv it!
