Images & Art: vermeer
The David fan community has created a wealth of artistic projects. Recently we shared Jennifer Barry’s photography and her calendars. Today we go within our community here at The David Chronicles to share some portraits sketched by vermeer. She created these portraits of David and of Lupe as gifts for them. The picture of David was given to him back in September with the proviso that if he found it a bit embarrassing to have a sketch of himself, he could give it to his mother. It turned out that Lupe was traveling on the bus with David at the time (during the AI tour) and she kept it in her bunk.
Vermeer met Lupe at the After-Party after the Idaho Falls solo tour show, and they talked about the David portrait and also about the portrait of Lupe, which was then unfinished. Lupe joked that vermeer shouldn’t draw her because David is better looking than she is! Vermeer was able to pass on the finished portrait to the Archuleta family through the kindness of Brett Hales. Hope that David liked it!

Vermeer, those drawings are wonderful. I really love the drawing of Lupe. I feel you captured her youthfulness and kind heart beautifully. And that is so cool, that Lupe liked David’s portrait so much that she had it hanging up in her bunk. Thanks for sharing.
Vermeer -- you are unbelievably talented! Though I lack a professional understanding or appreciation of art, your portrait sketches exhibit more life than mere photographs. I love them.
These are terrific! Just curious, how long does it take to make portraits like these? Also, were they done in pencil?
cutter12, thank you for saying that. I almost didn’t give it to him because I didn’t think I did Lupe justice. About David’s portrait, when I spoke to Lupe, she re-enacted David’s reaction which was so cool! She pretended to be David holding the sketch and looking surprised and said “he was shocked! he was shocked!” Of course, I was thinking hopefully shocked in a good way haha!
fandaforeverti48, I really appreciate your comment. Ideally one can do portraits from a live sitter and not from a photograph because you can capture hopefully some of the energy you feel from the person. Of course, that would only be in my dreams, David sitting for me!!! As you all have, I too have stared at countless David photos and videos that I feel I know his face more intimately than probably even family members!
desertrat, these are pencil sketches. For David, I intended to do it in color, though wasn’t sure what medium but started with pencil just to get the flow going but before I knew it, I had gone far so decided to make that my gift. That took maybe 1 1/2 hours or so. I struggled a great deal with Lupe’s portrait, doing and redoing over and over, over a few nights, because I didn’t have many decent photos of hers and while I can feel something about her I wanted to capture, I wasn’t capturing it so it was frustrating. That’s what I told her in Idaho Falls when I met her. I was touched that she asked for my name and said it was easy to remember.
Ohmygosh, these are awesome Jeanne/vermeer. You reached into yourself, and pulled David and Lupe out! Magic. Very, very beautifully done!
This totally fascinates me. “Ideally one can do portraits from a live sitter and not from a photograph because you can capture hopefully some of the energy you feel from the person.”
Been staring at these sketches trying to fiqure out what makes them feel so full of life & energy (very subtle). For David it seems to be his eyes (such gorgeous eyes). They seem very deep, like they hold all of his life experiences or something. How did you do that? Lupe’s seem to be partly the eyes but also the mouth or facial expression (??). She exudes warmth and understanding (???). Gads, I never do this but for some reason, I feel compelled to do so. Forgive me, if I offend your talent. I am an amateur -- honest.
vermeer -- These are beautiful! I’ve seen many drawings of David and these are the best by far…there is something you feel from these, maybe it’s in the eyes, you’ve captured something in the eyes. You are very gifted.
Vermeer..I know nothing about art, but I do know what I like..and I really like, no I love these drawings of David and his mom. So life-like, so real especially the eyes like everyone has commented. Shame on me, because I am green with envy. I wish I had your talent. I really do!
Hi vermeer!!! xoxox
VERMEEER -- These are lovely! And great you were able to give them to David & Lupe. Great! Great! Great!
gee you guys thanks so very much! fandaforeverti48 #6, you could never offend me or anything. Though I have no musical talent whatsoever, I relate to David via the visual art. I am just tickled to death that the viewer might be seeing what I see in the subject, like David says it makes it all worth it when people feel what he feels when he sings.
And beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so we all must have very similar eyes, and heart.
vermeer #4, thx for responding. You said you struggled w/Lupe’s portrait. I just want to say that I think you did a great job of capturing her grace as well as her strength.
Vermeer -- These are both exquisite! I love how you have captured their expressive eyes as well as the softness of their smiles. Too many portraits strike me as lifeless; yours are warm and beautiful. I am pea green with envy, by the way.
vermeer~ beautiful work~ you are very talented~thanks for sharing !
desertrat, it’s easy to be ultra picky with my own stuff. I felt I finally got it to where I captured something of Lupe’s persona but in the process of laboring, the drawing itself was on the verge of (or did a bit) getting stiff or stifled. But oh well…
xaris, djxox, thank you!
BTW, highervibe, dear fellow designer and artist, will we be fortunate to see your art shared with us some day soon??
vermeer, love both portraits so much. You are exceptionally talented and I’m so happy you were able to give your labours of love to David and Lupe.
I especially love the eyes in both — where sometimes that’s what I find missing in portraits, no spark from the eyes — you’ve captured David’s and Lupe’s spirit and the eyes sparkle with life.
Everybody sing with me, “their eyes don’t lie” LOL
Hi TOfan, thank you! The eyes are the windows to your soul!
Just survived a weekend of no David. Finally can stop by TDC and catch up with the new videos now.
Vermeer! Where have I been?! I just saw this! I adore these. I have always loved your pencil portrait of David, but had never seen the one of Lupe. WOW!
There is something just so indescribably sensual and arresting about a good pencil portrait. Add to that this parTICular subject matter and, WHOA! I’m so glad you did these, and REALLY GLAD thought to take pix of them before giving them to David.
Please be sure to show us anything else you do!
