EXTRA: David rambles about D/D concert – “Am not making sense here”

While we wait for SF to recover from her post-VIP-and-solo-concert-speechlessness, I will share a few things from the Pittsburgh concert last night. (I have now officially ODed on my ODD—back to back concerts!).
Kathy, thank you so much for organizing the pre-concert- luncheon-turning-into-mini-fanconference. SF and momjulie (and Sandybeach and so many other die-hard fans) — to spend the afternoon with you guys talking about our favorite subject matter nonstop for 5 hours adds so much pleasure to my concert experience!
Bubbly is the first of the encore songs. Sounds like he just learned it not a while ago and he asked the audience to help out if he forgot the lyrics. He sang it sitting in a stool and was accompanied by Kendra in a key board. He thanked her afterwards and they hugged. I personally did not care for the song whatsoever when I hear Colbie sing it in the radio – it did nothing for me. But I died a little bit last night to hear the song coming from David’s mouth. It’s actually the highlight of the evening for me.
Having attended the D/D concert and the solo show back to back, I can’t help but noticing how different the audience make-ups are . As Marlie already reported, the Cleveland D/D concert primarily consists of 10-12 Demi fans and their parents ,which does not surprise me, because there is NO promotion whatsoever for his participation in it in the Cleveland area, radio, print media, or on internet. There is a sprinkling of older (primarily female) fans. Not surprisingly, there are not many teens around, as they are not Demi’s target audience. In contrast, the Pittsburgh show consists primarily of teenage girls and older female fans – I would say about half and half. Conspicuously absent are males in their teens, 20’s or 30’s. I have to agree that this reflects David’s current lack of mainstream appeal (hence the lack of radio play). Will he ever achieve that kind of appeal? I think there is enough of us fanatical fans to make it financially viable for him to have a musical career, which he apparently realizes – he doesn’t talk about having a backup plan anymore. Does he have the aspiration to be a superstar a la Elvis, MJ, etc as we do have him? Judging from the last two nights, I have the feeling he sings with more joy in a smaller arena singing to his truly devoted fans. I noticed after he sang the last encore song (Angel), he lingered for extra 3 seconds before he got up to leave, as if he wanted to savor something. He said “I love you guys” and bowed to the audience several times before he bounced off the stage. There was none of this in the D/D show – there it seemed more like a “job” to him – he did what he had to do. I am now in peace with the fact that he does not now and may never have the mass appeal that we so crave for him. No more bitterness, frustration or disappointment about how his career is going now from this fan.
Oh, and while listening to him sing Crazy, the question I have been asking myself this last year why I have this obsession got answered. When he sings, he is telling us the story of why we are alive. He sings with such abandon as if he is naked emotionally, but he doesn’t feel venerable because he knows we are just as exposed as he is when we listen to him. To listen to him sing is to feel alive. I will not question my ODD again.
(Yes, Angelica, the whole night I was extremely distracted by the unbuttoned shirt since I sat pretty close to the stage. Was it accidental? Was it on purpose? I have so many questions about that!)
Thanks again SB for the recap.
