Retro Power Ballad Princess
10:1 This is Burning Up David's Earphones Right Now
If I were a betting man, I’d wager that this soon-to-be-released cut is already on repeat on David’s iPhone:
I couldn’t presume to write about Mariah when my ex is almost as obsessed with her as we are with David, so I’ll re-post here what he says on his blog about this one:
Better than methadone
Mariah’s new single is officially leaked, it is a remake of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is,” and it is the good stuff! It a hot-black-girl remake of a great classic song. This is what Mariah was meant to do, sing the hell out of a well-written song and over-saturate it with the magic of her vocal arrangements. It comes replete with a choir, key change, and plenty of dolphin notes. Pure magic.
My only issue is during the fade out when she says “let’s talk about love.” Not only is it the name of a Celine Dion song, it’s just one of those lines that is like, really? I know it’s in the original, but it’s hokey. All those other words available to use in the English language and she kept that one line. Still, 9.9/10!
“I’m still so inspired by that looney bitch,” he writes to me in his email about the song. Ha!
And I’m so inspired by the idea of David following in one of his own idol’s footsteps and creating hits with magnificent ArchuInterpretations of great pop ballads.
It’s a totally different style than Mariah’s retro power ballad, and David is a bit too young and inexperienced just now for this one, but, wow — I can’t wait to see him kickin’ this out at a grand piano someday…
Or to really get the chills going, imagine David taking on some of the Jimmy Webb catalog. Like this one, for instance:
– Rascal

Oh, oh, oh….David, Elton, David, Elton. Sigh.
Kill me now
David, the storyteller…OMG! My heart can’t take the thought of it! Help me…help me…
I’m with you on Amoreena. I can almost hear him now.
Galveston is a beautiful song, but I don’t know.
It is my fervant wish that he cover this Elton song:
(I don’t want to embed it. Slows down the whole thread.)

i love mariah’s version of this song; she adds a tinge of gospel to it. my church choir used to sing this back in the day.
Ooh! The Power Diva is back!! Loving that Mariah remake. Thanks for sharing, RAscal!
wow to hear David sing Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is” get the chills just thinking of it!
/SIGH
I have always liked the album “Tumbleweed Connection” Maybe someday ……

After listening to Mariah I can only imagine David’s reaction..”whoa”. If only he were working with material like this.
I love Amoreena! David needs a few years, as Rascal suggests, to mature into this one, but whoa nelly, I can totally picture it.
I too love the Amoreena but can I suggest the version from Elton’s 11-17-70 album for David. This was a live album but, with a twist. It was a live radio broadcast so it was recorded in an A&R studio. None of the usual sound problems associated with “live” albums. There was also an audience of about 125 in the studio. Finally there was just Elton and his piano, his drummer and bass player.
The results of this Stripped down performance are incredible, full and powerful. “60 Years On” and “Burn Down the Mission/My Baby Left Me/Get Back” are all the more amazing on this album.
I have thought about this album model for David for some time now. Rascal’s comments here as well as his statement from 10 Essentials “one of these days a producer will come along who knows how to get out of David in the studio what he is capable of in front of an audience” final insprired me to bring it up here.
rascal, you’ve exposed one of my biggest guilty musical pleasures -- love of jimmy webb’s songwriting genius, and glen campbell’s timeless interpretations of some of them…
”galveston” has always been a fave, and i think ”wichita lineman” is one of the best, most beautifully layered and constructed tunes written and recorded… this song just hits me where i live, every time…

Ahhh…. I finally took the time to listen to Galveston. Be still my heart! Drop dead gorgeous. This song sung in this laid-back way with the rich piano accompaniment just opens up a spaciousness in my heart. Add David’s voice and I would be gone lol!
Thanks Rascal!
