A Night at the ALMA’s
Contigo en la Distancia
Just when you thought it was safe… just when you thought it could not get any better… just when you thought that this amazing voice could not stun you any more than it already has… and WHAM! you are hit upside the head with what occurred last night.
Before I get to the VOICE, I must say that being a seat filler has its ups and downs (pun intended!). After moving around a couple of times I eventually settled into a seventh row center aisle seat, about twenty feet from the stage with a magnificent view. The announcer said at the commercial break “When we return you are going to hear a very special performance by David Archuleta, just amazing”… or words very similar to that. As we went back to taping, the presenters came out and announced the music category pointing out the various artists. Unlike many other award shows since this was already announced they didnʼt pan the audience for other nominees, some of whom were not there.
As they were introducing David they brought just two stools out on stage. My first thought?? OK, this is going to be major. An acoustic guitarist and the most handsome human being in my world right now… Contigo en la Distancia. Perfect. Emotional. Perfect. Emotional. I honestly donʼt know that I can find the words to describe what a moment it was. The audience spontaneously erupted in applause and cheers a few times during the number. At the end of the song, in the front row, Selma Hayek bolted out of her chair to her feet in wild applause. She was the first one in the theater ON HER FEET, followed by most everyone else. David smiled, took his bow and graciously left the stage.
What a moment. To have heard a full and beautiful rendition of this song in Spanish from David Archuleta is something that will never leave my mind. I have to also add this. David sometimes mentions that he doesnʼt speak Spanish or maybe isnʼt fluent. Others have said how can he say that when he sings in Spanish so perfectly? I believe that as foreign languages go, pronunciation in particular, you either have it or you donʼt. In other words, you can pick up the CORRECT pronunciation of almost any language because you have an ear for it. Doesnʼt mean you have to know the language. David clearly has that ability, especially with his musical talent and how he performs his songs. I am always aware of that when I listen to music in other languages. I think you all know how this one went last night…perfecto.

David Archuleta and Eva Longoria at the 2009 ALMA's
I waited for David to emerge from the venue but finally gave up when we were told that he had left the stage area and would not be leaving through the same exit as some of the other celebs. The rest of the evening was great and there were stars to be seen. Selma Hayek, Rita Moreno, Oscar de la Hoya, Antonio Banderas, George Lopez (and no Mario wasnʼt there…darn!) Eva Longoria-Parker, Christian del la Fuente (muy caliente), Wilson Cruz (across the aisle from me), Wizards of Waverly Place cast (some in front of me), Ricardo Chavira from Desperate Housewives (thanks for leaving early in the show ʻcuz I sat in his seat for 90% of the show!), Jimmy Smits, John Leguizamo and more! Nelly Furtado was great, Pitbull was awesome and Sean Kingston rocked it!
It is amazing how a two hour drive at 11:30 at night can sometimes seem like it took 10 minutes. Muchas gracias, mi David Archuleta… Contigo en la Distancia…
~mikesd

Thank you Mikesd! You just raised my excitement up another notch!!! Can’t wait to see this tonight and I’m glad you had such a wonderful experience.

Mikesd, What a wonderful review and just another morsel to get my anticipation hiked up another notch. So glad you were able to attend and see David first hand. What a joy he is!
Love him in the suit. He looked so handsome and grown up.
Betsy, I’ll be having my own ALMA party too, but not big screen to watch him on.
I’ll bring treats if I can come watch it at your house.
awestruck must have rubbed off on me. It should be no, not NOT. I’m just too excited to proof read dang it.
Awww sweetonda! I don’t have a big screen either! Just a “bigger screen” than the one I normally take over!
Come by the chat/video channel while you are waiting for David’s appearance o ALMA tonight. There is NO streaming of the show. You watch your TV and chat with us between times. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Does anybody know if there is a place to watch a live streaming of this? I don’t want to wait until 8 PM pacific time lol1

Yeah Mikesd!!! Thanks! I have butterflies I am so excited. I know that no one here will think that’s wierd! Right???
Mike -- I’ll be looking for you in the audience tee hee!
I’m uber excited about this! I’m gonna wait until 8PM though so I can see the broadcast on live TV, and I’m gonna gather a couple of ODD friends and we’re gonna bring out the popcorn lol.
Mikesd, I love how you mentioned that people spontaneously applauded during the performance. And someone mentioned hearing “ahhs” in the audience. I can’t wait!
I just wanna say I’m loving the front page right now: David on top, sitting, contemplative, ready to perform, demonstrating a quiet power.
And the picture below of him beaming, holding a golden trophy in his hand!
A new era of Archudomination.
OMG!
I didn’t breathe through the whole song!
Been busy, but am joining everyone one else for 2 hours tonight, glass of wine in one hand and complete control of remote in the other…going to savor every second.
Mike, perfect account of a perfect evening. Thank you.
Uncle Ronald, congratulations!
and Mr. Archuleta, looking might fine!
ronald -- I watched it streaming, and I’m going to watch on bay area time too tee hee!
Oh, my. That was absolutely divine, amazing, gorgeous, and PERFECT!
That was BEAUTIFUL! Now, I can’t wait to see it again on the West Coast. Stunning performance.
WOW!!!
Imagine Mike in row 7, center aisle, completely mesmerized!!!
Dear Lord, how did you create such perfection in a person? I cannot believe how amazingly perfect that performance was. Wow, wow, wow!!
That was so hot, so gorgeous, so sensuous, sooooo…GAH!
David, I’m so proud of you!
Mike, I haven’t read your recap, but will do so momentarily.
We already knew David Archuleta is easily one of the best singers around today. Now, he will also become known as one of the best latin singers currently.
What an absolutely breathtaking performance. It is one of his best TV performances ever…
He definitely needs to record a spanish album like yesterday already.
Mike, thanks for that review. That must have been awesome to hear live! I’m really glad to hear Salma Hayek gave David a much deserved standing O.
Joymus, totally co-signing on hearing a Spanish album. His accent is so on point, even when he was just speaking on the red carpet.
Please bring shovels ~ I need to be buried ~ I am officially dead now ~
Hi Dawn!
At least it will be with a smile on your face.
Yeah HG,
David is a master at speaking Spanish more beautifully than native language speakers. I heard every single syllable of every word as it floated past his lips. Is pop really the way for him to go?
I am STILL overcome at his performance.
Over on my blog, Peter shared this video link, which I’ve added:
For those who have yet to see (and those who want to see it over and over).
Sorry to Salma and Cristian for spelling your names wrong!! I must still be crazed! Can you believe that performance?? I’m waiting for Pacific time to watch since I just got home.
I’m still trying to wrap my mind around that sweet innocent looking David with his ALMA trophy in the earlier pics. Is that the same guy who just gave us this hot Latin performance? I mean, these two figures are sooooo diametrically opposed. It just boggles the mind (again and again).
I’ve got to accept the boy with the man, it seems.
GAWDDD, I feel so guilty thinking that that was so hot, but it was. Did you hear those oh-so-low romantic parts he sang??? He’s not playing fair, what’s an mature fan to do?
Mikesd, thanks for your recap. David sounded so good through the livestreaming it seems it would be worth selling a body part or three to hear him sing this live.
So happy I get to hear it again Cali time. Our little guy looked as growed up. *sniff*.
GAWDDD, I feel so guilty thinking that that was so hot, but it was.
Goboywonder, how could anyone think this performance was anything but hot?
“There ain’t no reins on this one.”
HG, I’m still fanning.
I am still in disbelief at the perfection of this performance. I’ve rewatched it now about 5 times and there are no adequate words to describe it. I am honored to listen to him and to be his forever fan. I did note that faraway look in his eyes as he got further into the song and at the very end he was somewhere very far far away. I will never forget this and I don’t understand a word of it.
I feel like David has jumped up to another level tonight. OMG -- that song was perfection from start to finish. His voice was rich and full and what…? What are the words that can describe that quality of voice? Come on, Rascal, I need help here lol!
I can’t stop watching it.
It is absolutely, completely, utterly, phenomenally riveting.
If I haven’t mentioned this lately — I think we’re onto something here.
Okay, back for more.
DavidfanLIZ: His voice was rich and full and what…? SEXY she says as she whimpers.
GAWDDD! THUD! DAID!
If I haven’t mentioned this lately — I think we’re onto something here.
Co-signing!
Good to hear from you, Rascal.
We all need help here. I intend to forward this youtube to everyone who wonders why I worship this young singer. guess that’s a pretty strong word, but hey, I’m in awe, I’m dumbfounded, I’m gobsmacked, I’m freakin amazed and all that other good stuff. Yes Rascal, speak.. soon.
ah, riveting… yes that’s it. thanks.
Did you catch the snippet of a smile from the guitarist at the very end? That smile says: OMG, something beautiful, something fabulous is happening.
What about that snippet of the legendary Rita Moreno in the audience looking like she’s saying “wow” to the person next to her?
yes davidfanLiZ there were several smiles from the guitarist near the end. he just couldn’t contain himself, but who could. It must have been a joy to perform that in front of a national TV audience. I would expect that video is rocketing around the world to Archufans everywhere. There will be immense pride and pleasure because of it tonite.
And Lupe was there. Oh my, can you imagine!
Do you know what finally did me in?
The combination of the sexy look (btw didn’t he just rock that shiny suit?) and the reprise of the AI Finale Apologize strut.
He simply glided across that stage and took us on a 4-minute journey into a new realm of possibility for his career.
Magical and sexy! He definitely strutted across that stage.
Rascal, will you make us a good quality video? Please?
The combination of the sexy look (btw didn’t he just rock that shiny suit?) and the reprise of the AI Finale Apologize strut.
That’s it! I knew there was an explanation for that deja vu feeling. Thanks, Joymus.
The Archustrut is back! He just killed it tonight!
“Boy Wonder” becomes “Man Of Wonders”
HG -- Thanks! Glad I could help with the addiction to this performance.
GBW -- do you have to change your name now to MOW?
MP3 HQ of Contigo from the Alma’s:

OH MY! They showed David at the end, sitting in a front row in the audience, when everyone was dancing. He was clapping, laughing and having a blast. So lovely.
I don’t think I can take any more tonite. Well maybe just one more time. just WOW!
Well actually he was standing. Those of you on the West coast can catch it,
Just watched 4 times and I still cannot catch my breath! Holy smokes David, that was breathtakingly stunning. And oh yes, hot, hot, hot!
Agree joymus, that stage presence and the strut or sexxy stroll or whatever you call it!
That voice, OMG! And he look everybit a gorgeous latino man tonight.
It looks like Moreno is saying, “amazing.”
Couple of random thoughts (I can’t do a full Rascal cause I’ve only got the iPhone here). First, this may very well be the most influential industry audience David has performed for since AI. This is no cheesy teen pop hootinanny, this is an audience of heavy hitters. The Latinos love their crooners, chrish them, idolize them. This performance — this stunning, sublime, perfection of a performance — will undoubtedly be the talk of the post-event parties. I’m very I interested to see what the Latin press has to say.
Clearly, my Top Ten list just got rewritten.
Just wow, David. Just… wow.
U.N.B.E.L.I.E.V.A.B.L.E.
I have no idea what the words were, but I understood everything he meant.
mikesd!!!!! wow, thanks for being coherent enough after such an experience to share with us, lol.
I stayed away all day because I didn’t want to know what song David was going to sing ahead of time. Not easy, let me tell you, but that made it all the more INCREDIBLE, wowza.
What a smart, smart, smart choice of song he made. One he knows intimately, and the perfect showcase for his blossoming maturity as an artist and a young man, a Latino. It. Was. Perfect.
I can’t stop watching it. It’s is so compelling. Every phrase, every pause, every sustained note was PERFECT!
mikesd…thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us!
I have now watched about 20 times and I’m just getting started.
This is epic, he sang so perfect, his spanish was no ordinary spanish, perfectly pronounced with David infused consonants that are to die for, his understanding of spanish creates for just the right sound of emotion…I’m on the ledge here…I knew he would be amazing but this is far more than I imagined. And yes we are on to something here… The latino community is going to join in and catapult him into superstardom. I am so freakin excited and overwhelmed by this.
Sorry…I’m a little OT right now…lol
joner -- y.e.s.! I still can’t seem to wrap my mind around it!
He is a whole lot of somethin’, isn’t he? When does it end, this procession of incredible mind-blowing performances? I haven’t been able to quit playing American The Beautiful since last weekend and now this.
And what a gutsy choice of song, too. All the other musical acts performed something they had recorded, “shameless self-promotion.”
David chose a song in keeping with the spirit of the event, and took a huge risk singing on TV in Spanish for the first time to honour that spirit. Remarkable.
I remember posting on Noting David that David’s audience reminded me of a roomfull of “kvelling relatives”. I have never felt more like one of those relatives than I did tonight. In a packed hall of established stars, David was their absolute equal in every way. It felt like the award for Up and Coming Star seemed inappropriate for David. He isn’t emerging, he’s already here!
As a singer of songs, David must now be included in any discussion of who is the greatest of all time. When the Xmas CD drops, the discussion may very well become a meaningless exercise. Tonight, David was no longer “the kid from American Idol” That was a man on that stage tonight, and the look on the faces of Rita Moreno and the rest of the hypnotized and mesmerized audience proved it.
Mazel Tov, mi amigo.
Oooookay.
DA I am blown away by your Sinatra, Martin, Bennet impersonation.
Wo.
Rascal . September 18, 2009 at 10:05 pm .
*cough* See my post #110 last thread by happy?
Abrra
I can’t seem to put into any coherent terms how he has rendered my knees weak! I loved every note…I loved every piece of clothing…I loved his hair…His face…and at the end, the ever smilin’ happy David enjoying the moment!
djafan, lol, it’s okay. I think we are all running in overdrive tonight! And i looove his consonants too!!! It gives this kind of texture to his singing, and then in Spanish…aaaaahhh!
Bliss, yes, yes and yes. oh yes!
bluesky, mmmm hmmmm. I wonder the same thing the Disney dj was wondering, “does he even know how good he really is?”
Twitterville is having a spaz attack over his performance!
Trust me, he has a ton of new admirers after tonight.
I took the time to check many of the twitter accounts of those posting compliments and I am happy to report that many of them were in the demographic that David has been lean in….people in their twenties.
This was a big night for him, really, really BIG!
He was in complete control tonight…of his voice, of the stage and every heart in the audience!
Bliss: Everything you said…..he will be thought of in much different terms after tonight.
Oh, Joner -- post some good twitters for us.
I’m overwhelmed with emotion here, and you know what? I haven’t even watched the performance yet! I was so nervous for David that I wanted to see what everyone’s reaction was so I could be prepared.
Thanks Mike for your glorious post and I’m so happy that you got to be there to experience it live. I can completely feel the excitement, awe and rapture in everyone’s words.
I will now don the headphones with tissues at my side and prepare to be stunned.
Joymus #55, Yeah, David has surpassed ‘crushing’ the competition/his peers, he is now MOW-ing them down.
Oh, did anyone else notice how he positioned his foot after his Archustrut. It reminded me of the pix of him in the recording studio. AWWWW, the guy is sooooo smooth.
goboywonder, yeah, i noticed.
If you are a person who loves beautiful music and/or uplifting, kind and genuine people, you must love David Archuleta. Who else would you want to love? I mean, really! Who else?
AAAAaaaaahhhhh!
Estoy satisfecha.
If I remember correctly, this was the song he sang while he went to Honduras with Lupe. Half way through the song he lost his voice and Lupe had to go up to the stage to finish the song for him. Tonight Lupe watched his son perform the very song so beautifully among his Latino peers in front of millions. How amazing is that!
Ok, Ronald, are you still coherent? I just watched it on TV on Pacific time and my feeling is that THIS is the real David. This is who he is.
bliss #81: I totally agree!
absolutamente perfecto! I was at my mom’s tonight watching this. We were both mesmerized by David’s performance. I knew all along this young man was special and this performance simply confirmed it once again. I can’t stop watching it!
Am sure tons of vids are already up in YT -- go watch them all LOL!
Due to numerous requests: I posted MP4 and MP3 links in the YT vid I uploaded earlier
MP3: http://www.mediafire.com/?tqymuionjzz
MP4: http://www.mediafire.com/?qzqgzjzzuzm
sigh… sigh… sigh…
Is this possible? For anyone to sing so perfectly magnificent?
I’m writing this and hardly being able to read the thread thru tear-filled eyes as this performance is on continuous play on my laptop. I don’t know how many times it’s been on repeat, but my eyes could never find a second to dry up. I might get dehydrated from watching, but I don’t have the heart to stop it… aaarggghhhh….
Liz, I’ve simply been reading through everybody’s comments! May I take the liberty to re-print what I wrote yesterday?
—
I’m going to stick my neck out and predict that this ALMA performance is going to be a breakthrough for him, in terms of standing out as his own artist and gaining respect as a young man. The precise magnitude of this breakthrough, and how widely it will be felt, is what I’m not sure of. There’s a number of factors at play favoring this, besides the most obvious. The end result may very well be that he changes his “image” with the public. Many of us knew he was a musical chameleon during AI, but this is on a different scale, and may be his revealing to the world his growth in presence and self-assurance that we as fans have witnessed over the past 16 months. He’s going to elicit a whole new set of reactions from many different kinds of people, all of whom will be very, very surprised.
—
I loved the backdrop of stars -- so fitting for the song. And perfect for the contemplative, blissful, romantic mood David gives it.
Bluesky #69, I LOVE your mention of Sinatra, Martin, and Bennett. David is so amazing that he can sit among the pantheons of so many kingdoms of music, and he is only 18!!
I understand now why he limited himself to a few Spanish phrases on his solo tour -- he was saving it for a Big One, and this was a Big One. David chooses his moments, just as he judiciously lays out and plans how he will sing a song.
One could have thought he would be nervous leading up to tonight -- such a big night, with a lot at stake. Not only for his career, but he also must have known he was representing his Latino heritage, and he needed to “do them proud.” But he actually seemed more at peace in a song than I have seen him on TV before. I think he was thinking of Lupe and his abuelita. Love moved him tonight.
mikesd -- honestly, I don’t know how you survived it. They would have had to get a crane and pull the chair right up out of the floor with me in it, to get me out of the theater. My jaw is still hanging open… with the popcorn still in it (not a pretty picture, sorry—but true!!!) What a gloriously perfect performance. What elegance, man he “cleans up nice”!! There aren’t enough superlatives in either language to cover this brilliant performance of an exquisite song by the world’s best best best--and handsomest!--vocalist. Wow. Did he ever represent. Guh.
I love his interpretation of this song. He can bring out the soul of a Latin ballad, just as he can with any genre. The intimacy, the sensuality. I love the bright, sweet tone of his voice. I love it when he brings his voice down to a whisper (“consuela”). The interesting rhythms when he pronounces some words (“mas alla de tus labios”). Everything is there.
People have said it already, but let me join the chorus -- PERFECTION.
So well stated Ronald, thanks! And I agree, he was not nervous, but COMPLETELY at home, with this language, with this genre, with this audience, with his own skin. He was at ease. He was himself. It was a beautiful thing to witness.
“Intimate sensuality… love moved him tonight.” -- nicely put Ronald.
At the end of a completely stressed-out day for me (details will NOT be forthcoming LOL), what a blessing to hear this gorgeous young man share his gift.
rascal -- “I think we’re onto something here.” hahahahaha
You silly. {{{hugs}}}
RONALD -- David was at home. Unlike in other settings, there was no need for him “to make sure that they understand it”. There was intuitive connection between him and his audience that night.
He knows that they know what he was all about, when it comes to music. As most Latinos would say, “Está en nuestras venas.” And just like Utah, it was a homecoming too, wasn’t it?
Great job David! I cannot find enough words to express my admiration & pride for your person and talent. GAH.
Haha.. I wonder what JLo thought of his “other man” that night
Tee-hee
ronaldsf 88 ^_^
I am bowled over by his accessibility to “the presence” that one feels from these other singers.
Then there is the voice. The delivery. Etc.
When I listen to these others I expect to be taken away in surrender (willing or not), to be renewed, refurbished, packaged and delivered to a new place: Destination, ‘wonder’.
DA is teaching us to expect this kind of experience and he is just beginning.
I repeat: Wo.
(kinda glad he’s short. I can pretend there are limits.)
We can all get into a bit of bickering about a lot of tangential stuff about David on this site. However, on a night like this, when David reminds us that it is ALL about the music, the moment, and the human connection, everything else is rendered dust in the wind.
Jive needs to update the picture of David on the Xmas CD cover.
This is no boy singer, This is a man and THE man. There was no cuteness to David tonight. He was a handsome young man in total command of a studio audience of A-list celebrities, many of whom I am sure are jaded from their many years in the Biz. I dare anyone to try to pinch David’s cheek after tonight.
I hear ya, Bliss. That was definitely THE MAN!
I’ve been listening to the MP3 on my ipod on repeat. I’m equally loving the spontaneous applause at certain points in the song. Much deserved of course.
What a moment!
On that note, g’nite all!
Take a gander at this leaked x-mas pic from the photo shoot. Prepare yourselves.
Is all I’m saying.
http://www.snarkyarchies.com/
Front page
I’ve watched the video from tonight about 30 times now. It could be a record. help me!!!
He will be crooning me to sleep.
Looking at the tribute for Oscar de la Hoya reminded me of the love and support the Latino community can give to its heroes sometimes. Then I recall Selena.
After tonight, I can see David being the pride of many Latinos, not only within the U.S. entertainment industry who were nearly all there tonight, but also around the world.
Bliss, what you said plus Bluesky’s mention of Bennett, Martin, and Sinatra are right on. During the song I’m holding my breath for every word and syllable: what will he do next? Where he will take that voice? How will he move me? I confess I have not listened much to the aforementioned artists, but a few songs I have heard from Tony Bennett have got me feeling that way.
There is a genre called Latin jazz, isn’t there? Because if there is I think this was it.
I didn’t comment all night because I was out seeing Aretha at Radio City. Of course when I arrived home I needed to check out David at the ALMAs….. now I can’t comment because I am dead….it was nice knowin’ you. *thud*
David needs to do a Spanish album and tour all of Latin America already. I’ll be a roadie.
Ronaldsf, PLEZZZZ don’t leave out North America on this tour. I will be picking my Spanish lessons back up pronto.
HG on #35 -- Oh you just have no idea how thankful I am for his dorky poses in that dashing ensemble. I mean after watching that divine performance of Contigo and ArchuletaGurl’s DLG in Milwaukee
I need to see his dorky poses like this one — http://cache1.asset-cache.net/xc/90900002.jpg?v=1&c=NewsMaker&k=2&d=77BFBA49EF878921CC759DF4EBAC47D0FD8B112913C5ED3586F547B210468CAA86D5C53CAF12456D
Otherwise, heaven help me! I may forget reality at some point. DAWN05 -- care to have a roomie in that dugout?
Here’s a higher quality version:
bliss #96: I hear ya on the Xmas CD cover. It’s not doing it for me. There’s something weird about the mouth and the eyes. And I agree, it’s too young.
Can we just wrap ourselves in it and drift off to sleep tonight?
Goboywonder, join me on the road haha! Best way to learn.
They definitely CAN do better on the cover. It won’t kill the album to have the current cover, but come ON. Can we honestly call David just a teen star anymore?
Liz -- did you see the one that they must’ve passed on?
Here it is again.
http://bit.ly/6WiRK
And now Jive is tweeting about David. What took them so long?
@jivemusic #DavidArchuleta just left a new voice msg update for his fans! Call David now at (801) 386-8196 to hear what’s new!
betsy -- that’s a nice one!
Ahhh… bless you ronald! Muchas mas bueno! (heh heh, I don’t speak Spanish, hope that’s close.)
bliss, dfLIZ -- agreed, that Christmas cover is weak. Looks like his left eye was photoshopped to look x’d. Well, Oct. 13 is coming very soon, wouldn’t it have to be printed by now? Maybe the downloadables will look different. Here’s hoping.
emmiegirl -- good idea… “wrap ourselves in it and drift off to sleep.” Sigh. Yes, ending off on a very very high note. g’nite!
davidfanLIZ,
I agree with you and Bliss. Just didn’t and still don’t get why the album covers don’t bring out the David we know. His nose is more chiselled and less buttony than what is on the cover. I think the photoshop work was a tad overdone, when David doesn’t need to be photoshopped. He’s perfect just the way he is. Matt Clayton captured his spirit so much better, and even some fan photos are better than the album cover. Can’t say I’m ecstatic about the cover graphics either. There are better fonts out there. JMHO.
Even then, I’m buying several of David’s Christmas CD to gift others. I just wished it had a better cd cover design because I have some pretty opinionated creative friends and family members who will surely give it a piece of their mind. But then again, as the saying goes, don’t judge a book -- or cd -- by its cover, lol! We’ll surely be blown away and forget the non-essentials. Huh, what cd cover?
RonaldSF #88 -- I totally agree with your reprint of yesterday. You could not have said that any better I believe every word of it.
David was absolutely stunning tonight, his phrasing, his VOICE, his command of the stage…I don’t speak Spanish but I FELT every nuance of that song….I think David could teach me Spanish!
As for the Christmas album cover…well, when I first saw it my gut reaction was he looks 12…then as I kept looking at it..he grew to about 16 maybe 17. There’s just something about it..not sure..maybe it’s the expression I’m not crazy about..I just feel that there are 1000′s of pictures that could be better…but I suppose they want to keep the younger fan base for as long as they can (well after tonight’s performance not too long!) Now, the leaked pic well that’s better!! It’s what’s inside the album that matters to me and I know that will be wonderful!
I just can’t get enough of David’s performance tonight..brought me to tears…so proud of him and the way he stands up and takes command of a song and pours his heart out..he DID sing out of LOVE tonight!!! Back to watch it one more time.
nite highervibe, I started for bed an hour ago and cannot pull myself away from that intoxicating performance.
betsy, yea, that pic is a keeper!
Can’t go to bed, either. Just keep listening to that song, over and over. It is enthralling.
The frosting on the cake… seeing the close ups on tv. While I was only about 20 feet away from the stage and couldn’t take my eyes off of David, there were no monitors showing the close ups. So seeing those and combining it with the real thing…aye aye aye! I said to my partner, please play this at my funeral if I go before you! He said, “I’ll put it on a loop and put it in the urn!”
BTW did you see Salma on her feet just as they cut to commercial??
Mikesd: “I’ll put it on a loop and put it in the urn” When I saw that I almost spit my drink out on my laptop.
There are no words..well, actually there are, but they’ve all been said. David was superb at the ALMA Awards. I’ve watched the show (his performance anyway) over & over. It reminded me of his “Imagine” on AI when I watched it over & over, totally & unbelievably spellbound. I couldn’t stop watching that performance. And now it’s like deja vu. And he looked just beautiful!
As for the Christmas Album cover photo…David, I believe had a say in the cover, per a tweet he sent out. He may have wanted a photo totally opposite from the first album cover which depicted a sensuous, kinda brooding pose. He may have wanted a photo that “looked” more like the “real” him..at least the way HE sees himself.
Personally, I think there are hundreds of photos taken by fans which I think would have been better, but the photo chosen is nice too.
Sorry this is so late. I lost my internet connection for a while. David is probably still awake though…
Good night all & for David,
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to know when and how to do right by David.
Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests.
Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey.
Keep David and and his voice healthy and strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, You did good, so good, and we are so proud of you! Especially “la Raza”. Hope you have a good night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts!
Contigo siempre “la distancia”, con amor!
MIke -- I love watching this (over and over lol!), knowing that you were in row 7. I kept looking for your face during the broadcast, but they only showed celebrities. What’s with that lol!
Before I say goodnight and after having AGAIN watched David’s performance tonight…now to get real…that was HOT, HOT HOT! lol
No one tells a story like David through his singing. And that Archustrut…just how he stands and moves on stage is incredible…what a MAN!! Spanish cd….I’d say so (the latinos will definitely want more now!)
David felt that song and sang that song like no other…I’m sure that he was thinking of his Mom and family and feeling the love and feeling really proud. He should be.
Those notes he sang were incredible and, did anyone get enraptured in those very deep, looow notes especially at .56 (they are to die for!!)
Ok gotta go before I pass out from all this. Then I look at tbat Jackryan4da #104 video of DLG from Milwaukee and all I can say is David is one HOT TAMALE!!
Haha
Ronaldsf #105, I know. I have been trying for the last 5 years to spend a summer in either Mexico or Belize but I always end up teaching summer school. Maybe this summer.
Oh sorry, ronaldsf #108. Still on my Aruchhigh, lol.
Archuhigh! I guess I better say goodnite. I just know I will be dreaming in Spanish tonight.
Perhaps the best recording of CELD? (I used the acronym here first, folks!
)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZN7hBq7bBo
In that vid I just posted I’m obsessing over 2:32-2:35, those jazzy, chromatic, syncopated(?, or off-beat) notes are so dang brilliant and sexy. Mm-mm.
Third comment in a row? Why not!
I studied the English translation again and went back to the performance, and let me just say that my years of learning Spanish paid off in those 4 minutes! Already you get a sense of the song without knowing the words, but knowing the words David is singing while he is singing them is a different experience! If you have any basic Spanish I strongly recommend it. I cannot imagine a single Latina teen in the world watching this without falling in love -- que linda fue esta cancion. Sigh…
I’m still not over this even by an inch. I watched again — and again — this morning, and thought perhaps I might be able to deconstruct it, to explain it, to Rascalize it, but I’m not even close. About the only thing I can think of at this point to say is Thank you, David, for being in the world and bestowing your gift upon it. It is a better place with you in it.
Aarrrgh! YT and mediafire are not cooperating. Been hours trying to upload HD versions of ALMA vids…
Ras-remember the early days when I’d “need” you to help me understand what just happened when David would sing? Well, even though I could use a little assistance right now, it’s O.K. that you can’t find the rascalization…that means (to me anyway) that he reached right into your soul and is holding on to it. And that’s a good thing…a very good thing.
Enjoy it, stay riveted and oh btw-have a great day! ♥ ♥
Miked, wonderful write up; your experience swirled off the page and I was transported there with you; I thank you!
Mr K. has heard Sinatra, Bennett and Crosby (not Martin though) live. So he sat motionless last night through David’s ALMA performance and at the end I glanced at him because his whole body shivered. You know the kind of shiver that is the result of chills running up your spine and he had a single tear running slowly down his cheek. He turned to me and said in a hushed emotion laced whisper as if he had just experienced something sacred, “that was the most beautiful song I have ever heard. David is simply love.” What a sweet, wonderful man!
And for me, this was Power Music from the 1st note to the last. This is the latest performance that has PERFECT stamped all over it. I think in the continuum of human experience when one describes a voice that can give one instant access to that place in one’s consciousness, one’s soul, that is connected to the universe, to the infinite, that the word perfect still just does not describe it.
You know that place I am talking about where you are in the zone, super aware, all senses are functioning at maximum power…and… everything is crystal clear, sharply defined, colors are vivid and crisp…and….time seems to stand still and at the same time seems endless…..and…..you know that you are experiencing something extraordinary.
This performance gives me immediate access to that place. Thank you David.
Oh, and SF, I couldn’t help but think about our conversation of living to a ripe old age so we could enjoy more of David’s music. I guess if something happened to me now that did not allow that “ripe old age” to happen, I could go happily to the beyond with this performance deeply embedded in my list of treasured memories.
And, happy, welcome to my strain of ODD. THUDDING, you will find, is good exercise.
Kizzi #133 -- loved what you said and couldn’t have said it any better!! This performance I can’t get enough of -- it is POWER MUSIC that’s for sure. It gives me chills every time I listen to it….it’s filled with emotion and passion and it IS BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT! I am still “Archustupified!!” We need to come up with a word just for David to describe his AMAZINGNESS.
Beautiful performance by David! Great to see him getting national TV exposure.
Ronald & Rascal -- amen, amen

Abrra
ABRRA -oh I can imagine that this performance would inspire you and ANGELICA to do more fabulous tribute vids!
Kizzi,
Oh yes, Mr. K is wonderful, sweet man! You’re lucky to have a husband who ‘gets’ David! The shivers that he felt, I felt it, too. And I believe David did during the latter part of the song. Check how his hand holding the mic trembled on the last ‘contigo’ at the end of the song (3:20 to 3:22). Powerful ending.
This morning when I was glued to my laptop with earbuds listening to CELD on repeat, my husband bade me goodbye to bring the kids to their Saturday activities and caught me with a tear streaming down my cheek. He chided me for it but kissed me warmly with a smile. I think he knows why and has accepted my ODD.
This place that you talk about, when one is taken over by power music such as this from start to finish, I wish I could just stay there. This song has been on my ear for the whole day and I like how it makes me feel. I had a really bad day yesterday, and this just made me forget how terrible I felt. If it is at all possible, may I just live in this song, in this comforting voice of love for the rest of my life?
jackryan4da . September 19, 2009 at 8:59 am .
I am considering……I need a few days of deep thought and consideration. I shall consult with Angelica to avoid duplication.
This performance requires such careful handling. It may be out of my realm, and more in hers.
Abrra
Good morning all! Interesting the nuances you pick up upon a fresh listen on a brand new day.
David is brilliant! Calling him a “Vocal Masterclass” is an understatement.
ascphil . September 19, 2009 at 9:04 am .
“I had a really bad day yesterday, and this just made me forget how terrible I felt.”
I can’t count the times I have heard this exact phrase in the last 24 hours. And here it is again, in print. Look up ^^^^^^ this thread and a few have said it. Seems like David came to save the day as usual.
I had an “unusually” strange day myself on Friday.
Got into it over the phone with a company charging me 3 times for items I did not order. Come to find out, trial offers are a trap. Don’t ever sign up for any trial offers?
Next I decided to go out for a walk with my beloved Border Collie, Karina. We arrived at the park 15 min from my house only to be turned away by the police blocking all access. Hmm I say, what goes on here? I got back home to the news from family that there had been a home invasion nearby ( !!!!!) and the guy was chased and cornered in the park. That explains the police being there.
OK! So I take my walk close by down an access road alongside a golf course. I walk near the 2nd Tee where 2 fellows are teeing off. I stopped and turned my back to them and waited for the ball to fly safely away. First one went sailing forward along the green. The next golfer whacked the ball with a mighty force. Did they watch the ball go flying towards the green? No. Instead I see them looking my way just as the CLUB landed in front of my feet in the bushes!! It had slipped out of his hand and flung 25 yards at ME! Not being a golf fan, I turned and walked away as the men ran for the club shouting “SORRY!” at me profusely.
OK so the UNIVERSE wasn’t just mad at me, something wanted me maimed! I guess many of us had a tough time yesterday for many reasons. But in the end, David made it all go away!
Abrra
Beautiful doesn’t quite describe that performance, does it? My emotions upon listening are so intense — last night I curled up in a little ball when I listened the first time, because of all the butterflies. And I’ve been listening and fluttering almost nonstop, since.
This one the best High Quality heart-stopping, thud-worthy, What Just Happened!? CELD video courtesy of Thop1984…
BTW..tickets at Ticketmaster for the rescheduled concerts are going, going, almost gone after last night…guess why?? heh-heh!
Good Morning to TDC peeps..
I’m have to run out shortly but just couldn’t let that stop me
from stopping in here, without catching up first (impossible!), without seeing all that’s been said (scanned quickly)…without waiting to articulate and edit this well…
didn’t want to let any of this stop me from jumping in, cuz after just watching and rewatching my recording of the performance I knew it was only here I could rush to gush!!
Was actually out at a dockside bar last night (recording at home) while this was on, and my none ODD boyfriend actually asked the bartender (we were the only ones left at the little bar on the docks..happy hour crowd had moved inside) if we could switch to the awards…just in time to see David…moonlight, dockside, stars…and a Spanish serenade. THUD. THUD..AND DOUBLE DAVID THUD.
My mouth was frozen open (as I shooed the bartender away in a raspy whisper…”…i’ll order after the song…” he quickly “got it” and went and hid)…with mouth frozen (as it was (way back) in Shop Around moments)…I hung on the perfection of every nuance and note. Gobsmacked again by the Archulator!! I already knew David singing Spanish is a match made in heaven, as we’ve all seen in the rare concert snippets…but this was full-circle realization of that fact.
I’ve said it before…Lookout Marc Anthony, Enrique etc.
David OWNS this.
A few notes…I thought of you guys…and the lovable worriers here (and you know who you are…the ones that really DO trust the Archulator, but out of sheere passion and love for David, can’t help but worry about the “kiddy” and sometimes sloppy seeming marketing)…
What went through my mind (after, “He looks so handsome!” and “OMG…SOUNDS PERFECCCT!!!”…each note, perfect combination of passion and pullback…push and withdrawal…sensitivity…)
was…He certainly filled his “big boy shoes” tonight…the Care Bears won’t even recognize him.
As usual, that was a double edged sword for me…in part, like the parent who doesn’t want to see him “leave home for college”, at the same time coupled with the satisfaction of my ulitimate Trust in the Archulator…to be able to do it all. Charity songs for little kids, ballads for adults, ZG exuberance for rockin’ the stage etc etc…transforming depending on the venue…the Voice cannot be repressed…he’ll be fine, he’ll be recognized by the legit crowd etc. All in due time.
On that last note I’m happy to see Rascal’s reaction, as I thought he’d be the true guage here…THIS type of performance with this type of crowd is what he’s been wanting for David.
And it’s what I thought last night too…different kind of crowd “waking up to the Voice” tonight….BIG. But we KNEW this would happen…how could it not?!
Last…After that bombshell, Latino wowza performance, with this killer, handsome, serious young man delivering…I was so happy to see the glimpse at the end…of just David…still there. The humble, happy smile…the hitting the hand to the thigh, bow, the “Thank You”..the little wave!! phew. I can’t help it…I honor every evolution of David as he grows both professionally and personally..but a part of me will always look for those little waves…some things I hope never change.
Viva la Archuleta!!!
oops “sheer” passion. I really can spell, my hands are cold this morning! (I so need an edit link!)
pps…Forgot to say..TKS MIKESD for the firsthand review…wow..I didn’t know someone could actually get into the show. GReat for you!! Tks to your review I see he got a standing O, which I didn’t know!!
Liz, I only caught a couple of glimpses of myself towards the last segment when Eva and George were in the aisle and she was wearing a pinkish gown. The camera hovered around up to about the fourth row so I was slightly out of range. Had I passed out in the aisle I would have been on for sure!!
SF, thought of you a few times Thurs. night… Maybe you should think about a small place in SoCal so you can be closer to the West Coast action! You know this is going to generate more and more TV appearances, guest spots, etc. It’ll save some airfare?? I’ll hook you up…??!!
Rascal… oh do I understand. There really does come a time when words cannot even come close to the feeling that overcomes you when you see this caliber of performance. It is more enhanced by what we know of David the person. If this had been a newcomer we had never heard before, yes, we would have been rightfully impressed, but KNOWING David makes it so much more profound…
JR -- sorry for the frustration, please hang in there! We need you!
Kizzi -- if anything does happen to you, can I have Mr Kizzi?
HG -- Would love to know what masterclass lady thinks of his last 2 performances.
Rascal & ronald -- you always say it best.
SF -- hope David’s co-headliner is prepared.
…Is this the request hotline? I would like to dedicate Contigo en la Distancia to the DJ’s who have dismissed David Archuleta as another teen idol or just another AI celebrity instead of the incomparable, transcendent artist that he is.
One more thing…does anyone know…
Did I just miss this on my recording while ffwdg thru others….why did he not get his award on tv?? or did I somehow miss this?!
(my morning plans just got pushed back…So I’ll keep TDC up and be back & forth, while doing other stuff for a while…….)
amb4dja . September 19, 2009 at 10:25 am .
They announced his award in the introduction to his performance.
I KNOW. Time constraints and all that.
Abrra
I’m giddy with the reviews David is getting. NeonLimelight says:
There’s a reason David Archuleta was honored for his acheivements in music at the 2009 ALMA Awards — he’s freakin’ incredible.
The 18-year-old with a voice that could take down artists twice his age performed on the awards show, which celebrates the best in entertainment by Hispanic artists, singing in complete Spanish. His ballad of choice was “Contigo en la Distancia,” a song made famous in recent years by Christina Aguilera.
If Christina has the ultimate female version, it’s safe to say David owns this song for the guys. His voice was flawless, chill-inducing — nothing short of amazing.
Abrra, tks for confirming. Yes, I heard the announcement too, and figured he got his award off stage?!!
“I KNOW!” (s’up w’that?!)
..but nothing takes away his moment last nite.
Oh emmiegirl, he is such a sweetie. And if you can bear another story, here goes:
Mr. K has done a little research on the lyrics he didn’t understand last night -- No habla español. He presented me with some of the lyrics (below) just a little while ago which he said “”if I could sing, I would sing them to you.”
There’s no beautiful song
In which you don’t appear
No hay bella melodia
En que no surjas tu
You have become
A part of my heart
Es que te has convertido
En parte de mi alma
With you, I am
Contigo, estoy
What a deliciously intimate & romantic song, and, I didn’t fully appreciate that aspect of it until Mr. K gave me his version.
And, yes, Emmiegirl, I’ll put in my will your contact info in the event of an untimely demise.
However, I’ll also leave you some fine print to consider.
and from Bring Da Beat Back:
The 2009 ALMA Awards were on tonight & David Archuleta owned the night.
Ooo -- thanks for that translation, kizzi. Could one of the Spanish speakers here do that kind of translation for the whole song? 2 lines in Spanish, 2 lines in English. I would love that.
Ronalsf #129…funny you mention this..
I watched 5 times in a row this a.m. and thought to go Google the translation…but…part of me wanted to savor the mystery (while stuggling with my rusty college Spanish…) “feeling the song” first through David’s interpretation without knowing the literal meaning.
…eventually I’ll go to the next level….
I thought it was odd that they didn’t give David his ALMA on camera. It wasn’t even a segment that was cut. They must have just handed it to him backstage. Could it be that they didn’t know how powerful a performance he would deliver??
sorrry, “Ronald”..I better cut and paste from now on today.
no more corrections, i know u guys get it..
lol..I wrote #158, without seeing Kizzi’s #155 translation first…not in reaction to it!
You know as soon as SF mentioned David’s rescheduled shows I thought to myself -- How can David go back to singing his “beloved pop drivel” after such a scintillating performance last night? How can he go back home again when the foundation has shifted into a new maturity with his absence?
I listened again this morning, David Love-me-tendered each syllable with a pure silkly tone. His voice flowed so effortlessly from one phrase to another. David actually benefitted with the forced break from the tour. His voice is fully rested and the richness has returned. While the US Open performance was mostly good, truthfully speaking the beginning was a bit rough. This performance however, was pure perfection and definitely David’s personal best of all time.
What remains to be seen is if Jive will recalculate their notions of the type of music David needs to sing to showcase his voice to its best advantage. Will they wake up and smell the coffee?
How can we possibly wrap our minds around this!! I drove home like a mad woman last night and got on a minute before he came on. Have been in dreamstate since and forget about coming out of it. Why? I’ll be hanging out with David in this song in each single note and breath he takes.
DO NOT SEND MEDICS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Gotta say that even with lots of not so wonderful stuff going on in life, because of David and his voice, life really is sweeter. And because of David, I have wonderful friends to connect with. And because of David, I feel like I always have good things to look forward to. NO matter how bad the day, or how unpleasant the stuff in that day is, THE VOICE uplifts my soul and I am happy.
Just sayin’…. ♥
kizzi -- lol!! Much appreciated, and I’ll have to get out my reading glasses for the fine print!
Been thinking the same thing joymus, where does Jive go from here?
Josie -- Amen!!! His voice is our refuge among the trials and confusions of our day. He pulls us into a place of pure beauty where we can rest for a while.
Oh and my sweet 79 year old mom, Noni, called me immediately after he sang and of course was twitterpated by it all and then added, “and who was the hottie playing guitar for him?” Haha Noni -- keeping it real huh?
Love that young man. He elicits joy and peace every time he opens his mouth and sings.
After repeated watchings of David’s performance at the ALMA awards, I am still trying to take it all in. This morning he’s on Twitter talking about fish brains. Honestly, this kid is a perpetual joyride. Love him!
Ah Liz: love this:
“He pulls us into a place of pure beauty where we can rest for a while.”
So true and with that, aren’t we the lucky ones?
Mike -- I’m just realizing that you were privileged to be there in person for one of the groundbreaking performances. I really do need to move into your livingroom so you can take me with you wherever you go! Hope you’re okay with that lol!
And the day after arguably his best televised performance, everyone going absolutely craaazy, he tweets this:
“So I was talking about my fish’s brain, and my mom said “they have brains?” Haha. I had to think a little on that one.”
i just listened again…and again (I swear, I’m gonna get busy with other stuff now!)…
couple more observations..
i can almost hear the hushed whispers to the still unenlightened few in the crowd..”who IS that?!”
and…to David Peeps in Charge…pls honor that Golden Voice.
for..when The Voice is well-rested…Magic happens.
is that really still one vocal chord?!!!
It was flawless. the clarity, ring, openess on notes.
“wow…just, wow.” is really all one can say.
ok…i’m shutting tv. onward.
#161 Joymus -- What coffee would be the best to go with “Contigo en la distancia?”
Costa Rican Organic Lomas al Rio?
Colombian La Rochela, Valle de Cauca Organic?
Brazil Fair Trade Organic Fazenda Poco Fundo?
Bolivian Cenaproc Fair Trade?
My favorite would be “Cloud Forest Organic Estate” coffee but it is grown in Kona, Hawaii (not a latin coffee though) laced with Mozart Black Chocolate Liqueur and a dash of Chambord. Yes, now that would be the coffee drink to sip to this performance.
emmiegirl#170…ahhh, exactly..
so glad some things still remain.
We oughta take roll call to see who is alive and who is not.
I personally am typing from the dead.
Go on with your coffee self Kizzi -- lol! You sound like a real expert in this area. I on the other hand,am a tea person
And yes, to reference your previous quote above, this version of CELD is definitely Power Music. It is simply masterful in every imaginable way. It runs infinite circles around one’s heart and mind.
Joymus #161
“How can David go back to singing his “beloved pop drivel” after such a scintillating performance last night?”
I will tell you HOW in my opinion.
He is the most multifaceted singer alive. He gives us JUST what we need, when we need it. When I go to MY shows in October, I want the POP, the SOUL, the HUNKERDOWN David. When I go to the Christmas shows, I want TRADITIONAL songs by David as well as the songs written for and by him. He never disappoints me.
“How can he go back home again when the foundation has shifted into a new maturity with his absence?”
Simple. HOME is where the heart is. David lives in his songs no matter what the style or the location on planet earth. His foundation is portable.
Abrra
LOL Josie. We have had a “divine” experience…kinda like walking into a “light” that I’ve never encountered before.
You type verrrrry well from the “dead.”
Josie: Label me DEAD.
And your Noni!! How great is that?? Somehow I have a feeling THAT is the male I should be noticing as well….
NOT!!
It appears your mother is young-at-heart! Good for her!!
I agree with other posters, after last night, “pop” music seems somewhat beneath David and his artistry. I hope this is a huge wake up call for Jive. David clearly knows the direction he needs to go and they should simply follow his lead.
David is brilliant and you always catch a glimpse of that fact in the faces of musicians that accompany him. There is inevitably a moment when an appreciative and knowing smile lights up their faces. Those expressions speak a 1000 words. They know they are in the presence of something very, very special.
Good morning everyone.
I’m googling “fish” and “brains” to see if there is any connection….
Just one more observation from the TV version of David’s performance… They did edit out some of the applause during the song. There were a couple of “segments” of fairly loud applause and cheering during the song that sounded more subdued on the show than they actually were. None of the screaming and shout outs were are all too familiar with but genuine appreciation of his ability. So please know that the audience was even more enthusiastic than it appeared on camera…
jello-well if there is, then that’s how I feel today…like fish brains. And Noni is pretty speshul -- the other thing she commented on was that FINALLY someone dressed him appropriately! The suit fit, the shoes worked, his hair was nice and neat…hahaha -- she went ballistic more than a few times with his AI outfits, so this one made her very, very happy. Phew
Kizzi- apparently since I can type in my sleep, I can also type in my dead.
For many, “IT” all started with…
Then, “IT” escalated tenfold after…
Then, we knew we were in “IT” for life after…
And now…”IT” is imbedded deep in our hearts with this performance…”IT” being our deep & lasting Love affair with David Archuleta, The Voice…
Honestly, has there ever, is there, WILL there ever be any other like The Voice?
I have to weigh in with Abrra on the POP vs NOT debate
David can sing whatever the heck he wants and I’ll be there (heh heh). In the future, I suspect that David’s Pop music choices (or songs he writes himself) will be able to support that rare quality that he has when he sings a ballad. And I think David has fun doing Zero Gravity and others and he should.
Do you really want him to stop doing intense songs like Don’t Let Go?
David may be one of the few singers alive today that could do what Abrra suggests -- perform a pop concert and then turn around and give us a musical feast of Christmas songs in, oh, perhaps Carnegie Hall?
jello180 -- lol, keep us posted.
I might be wrong, but I think David wants to do pop, especially at his age. I just hope they can incorporate some of this along with the, as Abrra said, soul and hunkerdowns and moves of his pop side…and with songs that are in collaboration with the best in the biz, bar none.
By the way, I tried to pre-order a second copy of David’s Christmas album (yes, I only ordered one cause I want to see if digital versions will be available) and Amazon would only allow me 2. It said, limited quantities are now available. Maybe they can do another run and fix that cover art
Abrra,
The joke is on myself -- no hard feelings -- please
Note the key word -- beloved. After all I am the same person who watched 100% of all the videos from each of his summer tour shows, attended a VIP and two live concerts.
I was simply asking these rhetorical questions more to myself after last night’s performances. Something changed for me personally in the way I perceive David’s versatility and talent, to the point that it is difficult to explain with cleverly phrased words. Sorry they came out klutzy-sounding they way they did.
My comparison was simply a reflection between the quality of most of the material he sings now, versus his potential with well-written material in the future. He is getting more rave reviews from non-fans with one latin jazz classic than an entire cd of pop music.
May I make a prediction here…for everyone who is just barely regaining some composure after last night…be afraid,
BE VERY AFRAID!!
David’s rendition of “Ave Maria” on his Christmas CD will be the final nail in our proverbial coffins..So enjoy these last few weeks…David is really gonna kill us with “Ave Maria”!
Don’t say I didn’t WARN you!!
Have a great day everyone!
SF: I AM very afraid. I’m sitting here replaying that video again and again and saying to myself, “Hmm, is there something I should be doing right now? Laundry, gardening, work? I have no idea. Is there life outside of Contigo en la Distancia?”
And now you make me think about Ave Maria? I need to win the lottery so I can hire people to do all my work and I can just sit here and revel in THE VOICE.
Kizzi you have a great one in MR. K
Abrra #176 I second all you said
Joner #179 Pop music is beneath him??? He’s 18 years old and likes that kind of music, so why shouldn’t he do it? No question that his voice transcends with songs such as CELD (thanks ronald), and I think David should do it all if he so desires. The amazing thing is, that he can.
Josie gotta love your Noni…
mike #181 I love to hear that the audience’s response was more intense than what we saw on TV… makes me even more proud
Jelll/Josie fish brains are what David has reduced me too, especially if fish have no brains!
Abrra I am a spammer “in training”
joymus . September 19, 2009 at 11:58 am .
NO certainly no hard feelings. Please know I am a tad snarky and can’t resist sometimes to express my opinion in that style.

SF -- Thanks for the links -- great choices. And, SF, it was you who coined the phrase “The Voice.” (Can’t find it in nD files though it is in there.) Hopefully, in David’s biography in, oh, say 30-40 years, you will be credited with the origin of that label. Actually, I’ve seen 2 light biographies on Amazon (for tweens/teens) but SF, seriously, you should consider writing one complete with pictures & links and title it “The Voice.”
Ballads vs. Pop/Soul/R&B -- same dilemma -- He does both well, imo, but I am pretttty sure that he prefers Pop/Top 40--what he & friends listen to according to what he has said in interviews.
IDK, he can sing anything. One thing for sure, he has plenty of time to figure it out and perhaps cross many genres of music with hits as time passes.
Anyway, I am here, on the sidelines at the 50 yard line, cheering at the top of my lungs, dressed in fan garb with all the attendant paraphernalia and as close to the action as I can get. I plan on keeping these seats, hopefully handing them down to my children and grandchildren, and enjoy every play, whether it be a TD or a fumble and all the in between, experiencing the amazing ArchuAdrenalin Highs and understand the periodic Lows that are always part of the game.
SF -- I am making out a new will…today…this minute…from the “dead”
I couldn’t agree with you more on Ave Maria…really.
awestruck-so true about my Noni! She’s a hoot lemme tellya…she cannot wait for 10/29 in Manchester -- and of course, neither can I!
I wanna know how Mike can still form words and thoughts after what he witnessed on Thursday night. Just watching it on TV did me in.
Anybody know what happened to http://www.snarkyarchies.com?
Here’s the song with translations under each line…I hope it’s right! haha..
“Contigo en la distancia”
“With you at distance”
No existe un momento del dia
There’s no such moment of the day
En que pueda apartarte de mi
That could drift you apart from me
El mundo parece distinto
The world seems different
Cuando no estas junto a mi
When you’re not by my side.
No hay bella melodia
There’s no beautiful song
En que no surjas tu
In which you don’t appear
Ni yo quiero escucharla
I don’t want to listen it
Si no la escuchas tu
If you don’t.
Es que te has convertido
You have become
En parte de mi alma
Part of my heart
Ya nada me consuela
Nothing comforts me anymore
Si no estas tu tambien
If you’re not by my side.
Mas alla de tus labios
Far beyond your lips
Del sol y las estrellas
Of the sun and of the stars
Contigo en la distancia
With you at distance
Amado mio estoy
My beloved one, I am.
Contigo en la distancia
With you at distance
Amado mio estoy, oh
My beloved one, I am, oh
Contigo
With you
I just emailed Janey of snarkies. Something weird is going on there!
The snarkies domain expired. They are working on it.
Thank you Kizzi..thinking, thinking, thinking…could be dangerous..all that thinking! haha!
Going out to lunch with my daughter & grandaughter. See you all later!
WOW! David is absolutely breathtakingly stunning in this performance. I started viewing it an hour ago and am still viewing it, and don’t know when I would stop! That voice and that strut! Going back to view it again!

Welcome! New name here
We love it!

Last night was, IMO, another moment like “Imagine” and the AI7 finale where David just took over time/space and nothing else mattered. I have had a near death experience where everything stops and you are aware of everything, at peace and blissful. David’s performance last night is as close as one can get to reconnection with source.
Amazing!
Hi Rascal and Josie.
I watched David’s performance on TV last night, then watched the video played on a continuous loop on the TDC chat site. I have watched and listened more times than I can count this morning. Trying to find the words but they just won’t come. Everything falls so short of his reach. I will say this. In Christina Aguilera’s and the earlier version he did as a child, several long runs scamper playfully throughout. This is a man’s version of Contigo en la Distancia. Tender, sensual, romantic, but he is in complete control. No playing around. He refrains and holds back and within that control is a contained passion that is almost overpowering in it’s strength.
To quote NeonLimelight again from Marlie’s post #152
If Christina has the ultimate female version, it’s safe to say David owns this song for the guys. His voice was flawless, chill-inducing — nothing short of amazing.
TIMBOT!!!!! Xoxoxo
Angelicaaaaa, your last post, yeeeessssssssssss!!
(would someone pleeease come destroy my computer so I can get something done today!!)
emmiegirl . September 19, 2009 at 2:01 pm .
In chat I am known to have a large HAMMER.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Now that should do the trick on your PC
Abrra
Today, as the Jewish people celebrates the beginning of a new year, David ushers in a new era in his musical journey. He sang it last night like he owned IT — his voice, the song, the Spanish language, the stage, the guitar guy, the audience, his Latino roots, and US! Just Wow!!
Happy Rosh Hashanah to all the Jewish TDCers!
If I had a hammer…I’
d hammer in the mororning…I’d hammer in the evening….all over this laaand……
Awestruck 197, About the Snarky site. It seems like their domain has expired and they are working on it. Try this for now:

Jello LOL
thanks Abrra, your always there!! I almost didn’t hear you, have CEDL blasting as loud as I can get it!
gads, I mean CELD! You all understand!
YJfanofdavid thankd!
Awestruck #190 -- I said…. ““pop” music seems somewhat beneath David and his artistry” , the operative word here being “somewhat”.
I personally feel that pop music is a bit limiting in allowing David to display all of his vocal prowess but, hey, if pop is the direction he wants to go right now that’s fine with me, and you’re right, he can do it all! My wish for him is that he has every opportunity to do so.
Even Perez Hilton is stuck on replay:
“Wow. Wow. Wow.
American Idol alum David Archuleta took home an award at the Latino-centric ALMA Awards in Los Angeles and (more importantly) he performed a beautiful, stripped down version of Contigo En La Distancia, a song most closely associated with Luis Miguel.
Archie did amazing amazing job with the song!
Check it out (above).
We’ve honestly watched this four times in a row now!”
No one is getting anything done today
I created this in honor of David’s Alma Award:
His performance was simply breathtaking and unbelievable!!

Here is the best video yet:
I’m seriously beginning to think I need an intervention from watching the video from last night!
It invades my senses.
Rascal, are you still alive?
Joner #216 I hear ya. Though, I do think that David has upped the level of modern pop music and it fulfills his need to connect with this age group.
After watching his performance for the ?th time I really am getting a sense of his comfort with the whole thing. I have not detected any nerves, even at the start of the song. I mean really to sing the song in Spanish at the ALMA’s, you might have thought he would let his nerves get to him. Totally into it, perhaps knowing that he can pull it off. Whereas with the songs off his debut album and when he first started performing them there were obvious nerves… going outside of his comfort zone, singing pop music -- he was not so sure of himself.
I hope David continues to challenge himself doing as many different kinds of music that moves him. We as fans can revel in listening to his many different musical sides and always be amazed.
marlie7 . September 19, 2009 at 3:07 pm .
HAHHA!
I counted 5 posts with that same video. You think maybe the Archu-stupor might be in full effect today? It’s the drug of choice here for sure.
Abrra
Abrra, LOL -- really, with that intro? I didn’t see any of them. Ha-he-ha Archustupor for sure.
Joner -- Can I get that intervention with you? I’m in need.
Rascal must be dead. Probably passed out with an Archuoverdose.
Abrra -- nope -- you didn’t WATCH it. Talk about an Archustupor.
marlie7 . September 19, 2009 at 3:22 pm .
GUILTY!
I saw the ABC logo and JUMPED to an assumption. LOL
The good news is. I am stealing it for the video channel.
Thanks Marlie
Abrra in archu-stupor
LMAO!! I love this place.
I learned a new word on twitter yesterday (Rascal would be soooooo proud of me)
It’s NEOLOGISM
One definition is: new word that is understood only by the speaker occurring most often in the speech of schizophrenics.
Archu-stupor…Archuoverdose…???
Does that mean I’m crazy???? ♫Probably♫
Check me in.
Abrra -- I knew you would steal it.
And it’s okay about your ArchuStupor -- you can come to the intervention with Joner and me. Where is happy -- she needs to pull us out of this vortex of musical addiction.
Who is this person? He sings like that and then tweets about trains and fish brains? I will never understand. I guess that’s where the genius comes from.
David in his comfort zone. That’s all I want forever.
How did we get to be so lucky?
BUZZZZZZ…..
La Opinion is the largest Spanish language daily newspaper in the U.S. Founded in 1926 it covers local, regional and national news for the Latino community in Los Angeles and southern California. In their review of the ALMA Awards they singled out 2 surprises of the evening:
The surprise of the evening was the video message from First Lady Michelle Obama to the Latino community, congratulations on the Hispanic Heritage Month and thanking this segment of the population for their contributions to the country. Also surprised by the Spanish live performance of David Archuleta, former American Idol contestant and winner for New Artist of the year, he perfomed Contigo en La Distancia.
The world is your oyster David.
World, say hello to David Archuleta.
Angelica -- #205 -- “This is a man’s version of Contigo en la Distancia. Tender, sensual, romantic, but he is in complete control. No playing around. He refrains and holds back and within that control is a contained passion that is almost overpowering in it’s strength.”
Yes, there it is. You nailed it. The refrain in places where he could have run circles around certain notes… gives his performance that much more breathtaking power. Every choice, at every point in the song, reflects both born-in-the-blood *and* conscious awareness of just how to reach into our very marrow.
He is one heat-seeking missile with that voice. Guh. Still can’t get anything else done.
And while we all sink into the VOICE, David is eating and twittering about roasted corn and cherry limeade. Bwahahahahha. Does he know he just made musical history?!!!!!
How bad is your ODD today?
I am spending the afternoon looking thru his official site photo section. It’s like mining for gold. Seeking that one or two golden nuggets of happiness. My new/latest obsession is image hunting.
Abrra
My ODD just took a turn for the worse -- or the better, depending on your point of view. I’m now reestablishing my Twitter presence, following new ODD people I’ve met or emailed with, while running that video in one tab so the music is constantly playing. Checking out every review, every comment, just… because.
I just read through everyone’s comments! Wow. Rascal, speechless? Is that a first?
Timbot! Blast from the past!
David and pop music: I remember thinking after David sang Bubbly for the first time in Pittsburgh, that, amazing and fun as it was for the fans, the song itself is so beneath the brilliance of his voice. He added to it of course and tried to elevate it, but still, most of pop music doesn’t require the intensity of feeling that he brings to every song. I really don’t care what he sings as long as he’s singing it.
Kizzi: Tell you husband I love him. If we ever meet, he can expect a hug.
I feel like a witnessed a shooting star last night. Somewhere out in the stratosphere he is eating roasted corn and cherry limeade.
momjulee, marlie -- I know, fascinating. Probably too early in the day for nonsensical phsycho babble, but to me it’s like he always keep things in check; and his absolute humility will not allow the stage alter ego to dominate.
…as we continue to be happily caught in the tween.
Okay, I’m really, really going to move slowly away from this computer. (Slowly, lest I have some kind of tremors or something). I am supposed to go out to dinner tonight and I’m still sitting in my jammies at 4:30. Sigh.
But I did watch that video well over 50 times since last night, and that’s a lot of work to get done
And I reconnected with Joner and Abbra on Twitter, although that’s not quite what I meant by an intervention (happy -- where arrrrreeeee you?). And at least the bed is made and the dishes are in the dishwasher. That is all I managed to fit in today cause I was so busy here with all of you.
And finer company I could not find anywhere.
marlie- I am still dead.
happy! I was just (slowly) moving away from the computer and there you are. Dead.
Cover her up Marlie! Don’t just stand there staring!
/steps over happy
Abrra
WOW!! I’m late to this archulove party!! It’s the Jewish New Year and I’ve been busy with family, food, temple, etc….
I taped the show and wasn’t able to watch his performance until now, and of course, I can’t stop…..I am not an accomplished enough writer to express the way I feel. There isn’t an adjective around that could do that performance justice!! From the looks of things, it seems that anyone who tuned in and watched yesterday, finally understands what David Archuleta is truly about. Performances like that can be life-changing and I believe this one will put David in his rightful place -- amongst the true musical geniuses of all time.
David -- continue to do your soulful pop/r&b -- I love it all -- and I know that ever so often, I will get your true masterpieces!!
Silverfox #198, thank you for the line-by-line translation! Again, for those who have the inclination, I recommend getting some grasp of the words. For me it made the song more intense -- not only do you hear what he’s saying, but you’re also like “He said THAT in THAT way??” Mm-hmm.
Joymus #161, I feel you on the pop music thing. While I think that David wants to sing pop, I have never thought he mainly wants to sing pop. And I think this performance might lead to some changing of the rules for thinking about his career. It makes it undeniable to everyone (including those who make decisions on his career) that there’s something about his musicality that is also very commercial. If Marc Anthony and Enrique Iglesias can enrapture and sell millions through passionate love ballads, why can’t David?
Add those names to Jesse McCartney and Josh Groban when it comes to tried-and-tested commercial formulas. Even from the standpoint of those who think in those terms, there is room for change now.
I am wondering if David’s fans will be clamoring at his concerts now for him to sing CEDL. And for it to appear on his 2nd album. His younger fan base wants David to take them to different places -- think of all the enthusiasm for this song and for Zero Gravity.
Mikesd #158, apparently the producers had no idea what kind of impact David would make, given that they did not even present him with an award during the show. But by the end of the night I am sure he was the one thing everyone in that audience had talked about. They just might change their plans next time.
John from ArchuletaAvenue Malaysia has a great write-up on this performance, too. John, are you a member of TDC? Because if you’re not, would love to have you here.
http://archuletavenue.wordpress.com/2009/09/19/contigo-en-la-distancia/#comment-34946
Julee: Yes, I ponder that question daily: “How’d we get to be so lucky?” Just grateful I am part of the “we.”
Ronaldsf: Thanks so much for that link. What an insighful writeup by John. I especially appreciated John’s description:
“This is the David that has yet to be fully captured by the producers and sound engineers in the recording studio. Then again maybe they never will. For ‘how do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?’ ”
A moonbeam indeed.
The new Canadian fan site did a great recap of David’s performance: http://snowangelz.wordpress.com/.
Good Afternoon,
I have decided to relocate to the State Of CELD. *makes note to self to put in a change of address at local Post Office*
Here is an example of Fan Power. When I read this article last night, David was NOT listed on this poll. But because many of his fans left comments about his performance at the ALMA Awards, he was added by popular demand:
http://www.celestrellas.com/2009/09/18/ganadores-mejores-momentos-alma-awards-video/
Goboywonder, that is amazing! And David’s performance has already surpassed everything else and stands at 35% for people’s favorite part of the ALMA Awards! And he was added late into the poll, too!
And EVERY SINGLE COMMENT is praise for David Archuleta!
Thanks for the translation, SF#198!
Wow, sounds like Contigo en la Distancia should become the Arch Angels’ Anthem!
If there’s one part of the translation I really hope folks will “get,” it’s:
Contigo en la distancia, amada mia, estoy.
“Amada mia,” word for word, is “beloved mine” (Spanish has adjectives after the noun).
“Contigo” means “with you.” And so after that “estoy,” in one word, simply means “I am there.”
Now listen to the last few of times he sings it, and you’ll see what I’ve been talking about! David knows what he is doing with every word. And he is a master.
goboy #244 -- went there… voted… at 36% now, he’s twice as popular as the next down on the list!
Thank you so much for this. Wonderful!
I lurk here all the time, but I feel compelled to comment on David’s ALMA performance. Thank you MikeSD for your post! It must have been an amazing experience to witness David singing at the ALMA’s live.
I find it interesting that what we, David’s adoring fans, have always known about David being a huge star who will be a legend for generations with a voice that touches you to the core, other people are finding out even without the level of publicity we would like him to receive. No matter where or what he sings, new fans will flock to him. It’s like an angel taps you on the head and hands you your heart and says follow this one…..he knows the way. His singing can lift you up and guide you to do the right things and you just can’t get enough.
Even though I don’t understand the Spanish words, you can’t miss the feeling he conveys so well. This performance was huge for him. I’m so happy and honored to be his fan.
I just got finished listening to the MP3 of “Contigo” for the first time. No visual of David mind you cause I just wanted to pay attention and listen to it without distraction (if you know what I mean--his handsome self). As I was listening to it -- I thought to myself this is a record right here! This is absolutely stunning, beautiful and PERFECT. And then I thought to myself -- GOSH, this is DAVID singing LIVE -- this should be on an album just as it is. It just made me think to myself how no one sings better LIVE -- NO ONE, and so perfectly. This IS a record as it is, no touch ups, no backup vocals or percussions, they don’t have to rehearse it in a studio, tweak it or touch it up….they could just release this AS IS. I don’t know, it just made me crazy thinking how David can sing this performance LIVE and it’s so PERFECT every note of it that no one has to do a thing to it but to just put it on a future album just the way it is.
Oh my goodness, ronald, thank you for that. Just listened and applied your translation, oh my, oh my.
David’s having a good time at the fair!! The Utah State Fair, that is!
Paula Abdul sure got it right about David. He is “destined” for superstardom.
Emmiegirl, I know, right? I cry every time I listen to this song now. Every single time.
Twilarchight made a great comment on YouTube:
he has a voice that can resonate across an entire concert venue without a microphone ~ yet has the a gift of caressing every syllable like it’s fragile crystal that will shatter upon contact ~ he kills me he does ~ I can’t stand it
Isn’t that a beautiful way to describe David’s voice!?
Another thing about this performance is the quality of his voice. He has done this for me only a few times since Imagine, when his voice is relaxed and can be so soft and rich and lovely, and yet at the same time can be so piercing and ringing. If it’s true that having some time to rest his voice is behind this, then rest on, David Archuleta!
Also, it helps to have professional production values -- a direct line from the microphone, some mixing to make sure his voice stands out like we got with “Imagine” (that was pre-taped as well). YouTube videos of his live performances are marred because we get all the atmospherics and it’s hard to get the nuances of his voice. But no -- THIS is how you “present” The Voice!
pabuckie..uh-huh, David is fast becoming what I call a
“LIVE PERFORMANCE ARTIST”.
We all know most singers don’t or can’t do justice to their recorded songs. Granted, there are some singers who do have great voices, but still can’t duplicate the recorded versions of their songs. David is one of the VERY few who can make not only his own songs, but ANY song better live.
No doubt David will have many hit songs in the future, but his International fame will come from his LIVE interpretations of his songs, whether his own compositions or others..IMO. And it’s already coming to pass. Whatever he records in the future we will buy, of course. But what we will really want to do is hear the LIVE version, so David will ALWAYS be in demand as a “Live Performance Artist”. IMO, of course.
Which is why he will also be known as “THE VOICE”.
Goboywonder #103, if there ever were an argument for bilingual education, it would be a clip of David’s ALMA Performance. Most nations of the world require multilingualism, and it is only to our detriment that we don’t in the U.S.
I am ready to make my Powerpoint presentation in the halls of Congress! LOL!
Pabuckie -- I have thought the same that they could easily release this to iTunes. It is done and ready. How is it possible to get something so perfect in one take? I’ve read that Pitbull had two takes on his song.
Ronald -- as I mentioned earlier, David applied the same ‘Love me Tender” qualities to this song. Every word and syllable was caressed and shaded with rich warm tones. The natural huskiness of his voice in the lower register worked extremely well with this song. I particularly loved his intonation on certain words -”estrellas”, “consuela”,”labios”, “tambien” and finally the extended “estoys”.
Please, Ronald or Rascal seriously need to deconstruct this performance.
Joymus, your comparison to “Love Me Tender” is apt.
I, for one, would actually love to hear Chenson examine the musicality of this piece. His analysis of LMT was brilliant.
Leaving on vacation, and it is killing me! I kept telling myself to go buy a stupid ipod, didn’t do it, no time now, leaving in the morning. And now I don’t know how I am going to go 8 days without listening this. I don’t know why, but the thought is almost unbearable.
Joymus, Pitbull did have two takes of his number but they said it was due to audio issues. Both were high energy and very well received. Most noticeable to me in watching on TV was that even though I have surround sound it couldn’t come close to the depth of sound in the theater. A great performance. Very few minor second takes throughout the night. David? Perfection from the very first second he opened his mouth. What even added to his overwhelming performance was the courtesy the audience showed in staying quiet to HEAR this masterful voice, except of course for the spontaneous applause and outbursts throughout. Very different from the screaming at so many of the live shows. The spontaneity was simply due to the magnitude of the performance! The Richter scale would have been off the charts!
Sorry I am rambling…when I start to think about the show my brain won’t stop!
Ronald 247
That is what I meant when I mentioned “Sinatra, Martin and Bennet”.
I know just enough Spanish that his interpretation of the lyrics, his delivery,
his PRESENCE …..
Yeah, like I said: wo.
Love all your comments, guys.
Did DA give us enough to comment on until Oct. 13th?
He is SO thoughtful!!
(He gets any more thoughtful and I might implode.)
Mike, #148, you said..
“SF, thought of you a few times Thurs. night… Maybe you should think about a small place in SoCal so you can be closer to the West Coast action! You know this is going to generate more and more TV appearances, guest spots, etc. It’ll save some airfare?? I’ll hook you up…??!!”
REALLY?????
I do think about that very thing often!
I thought of you MANY times Thur. night…about you experiencing live what we could only imagine or dream about. I was so happy for you…what a rush it must have been for you to be there witnessing yet another stellar, mind-blowing, master-class performance by David.
SF, the ironic thing is that I would have gone to the ALMAs even if David wasn’t there as it was on the list of shows through the company I do seat filling for. The BONUS was that HE WAS GOING TO BE THERE!! A short two hour drive to LA is so worth it for many of these shows. It is also how I got to see Reba and Andrea B. earlier this week. And to think I have lived in SoCal for over thirty years and am now just taking advantage of the opportunities. Never too late… maybe a little pied a terre in Santa Monica? or a place in West Hollywood?? Would be lots of fun…
SF: Thanks for the translation. Rondalsf: Thanks for futher helping me understand that beautiful phrase. There is not much I can add to the wonderful remarks that everyone has said except to repeat one of my comments on you tube, after learning this song was written in 1922~
This passionate, amazing love song has been waiting 85 years to fully come to life. We hear you now.
We’ve had some requests for these so here they are
Contigo en la Distancia -- 256 KPBS MP3 (audio)
Contigo en la Distancia -- 44MB HQ MP4 (video)
Hey all
Ronald and Joymus thanks for your kind words on my review of David’s Archuspectacular performance at the ALMAs.
I do visit TDC on occasion but I feel kinda intimidated by the very expressive and articulate members here so I mostly lurk.
I’m still watching the video and trying to take in every moment in detail. And every time I listen, I find something new to admire of that performance. The lump in my throat is here to stay I think!
I think most of us have always known that David had this in him all the time. And for him to pull it out on such an important stage is great for his career and standing in the music industry. At least it gives us fans lots to talk about no?
Thanks for dropping by at Archuleta Avenue Malaysia guys
David tweeting that his is at the symphony tonight and it’s so cool. What a lovely way to end a spectacular week in his young life.
Johnchang: So glad you stopped in and decided to delurk! We have a wide variety of commenters here and welcome all. I think, having read your article on your blog, that you would be among the most articulate.
NancyL..#249…”It’s like an angel taps you on the head and hands you your heart and says follow this one…..he knows the way.”
Yes, that really does happen daily I am certain and now David has a great following of admirers.
ronaldsf…I enjoy your educational take on David especially with this song…keep it coming. Sometimes we can only imagine what it all means and it is wonderful to know translations and all that you place within it…
SB
So, I had this BIG idea to make an audio mix of 13yr old David and 18 yr old David. Never used a mixer before. What the heck, I gave it a shot. Young David was not working out. Caused too many time issues. So, Instead I made an mp3 of David’s performance last night and double tracked it. It’s got a cool echo effect and sometimes they even sing together. I have it looped now. It’s not bad.
Anyone interested can download it here:

Wow! Don’t know why but I am really exhausted today! Can’t keep my eyes open so wishing you all a very good night & for David, who I am so happy to know is having the time of his life tonight….
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Amen
David, hope you have a good night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts!
Contigo siempre en la distancia, con amor!
As I watched “Contigo” for the 100th time today I actually thought of something NEW to add to this post. Just when I thought everyone has said everything that could possibly be said I thought of this:
You know how on David’s tours whenever he sang a slow song like TBWY or SOT or Angels we would hear screams or talking?
Well, another reason why I think this performance was so magnificent is because we finally get to SEE and HEAR him without interruption!!! Except for the applause that could not possibly be contained, we got a glimpse of how we would one day like to hear him in a concert hall singing where everyone is respectful and quiet so that we can actually hear THE VOICE!!
Abrra, David is ‘killing me softly with his song’ and your double track audio only speeds up the process. It takes everything in me to hang on to what little breath I got listening to one David and you create Davidx2, Oy!
goboywonder . September 19, 2009 at 11:51 pm .
Did you think it was ok? I wasn’t sure, but I was determined to come out with something special.
Abrra
Abrra, I loved it. I especially like the parts when the two are singing together and then seems extended as the second one finishes. Yeah, it’s interestinly cool.
LOL if you read my post:
“and sometimes they even sing together”
and goboywonder’s:
“the two are singing together and then seems extended as the second one finishes”
We are taking like lunatics! LOL As if David has a twin LOLOL

Abrra, “We are taking like lunatics! LOL As if David has a twin LOLOL.”
Sorry, that’s the best my fish brains could come up with. I leave the fancy talking to Kizzi and Angelica.
I started it. That says I am right there with you in the fish brain dept.

You know, I was just listening to CELD again and it occurred me that this performance has a really intimate feel to it. It’s like I am at Kimbal’s East a small used-to-be-very-classy venue (haven’t been in a few years) in Emeryville, CA front and center with friends, sipping wine and enjoying this seasoned vocalist. Maybe in 2-3 years this will be the case? He’s already tested the waters (Lousiville).
Was David’s twin brother there too?

BAHAHAHAH!!!! I think so, too much wine.
This performance has left me at a loss for words.
So many beautiful things have been said about this beautiful performance.
Ronald, Angelica (and so many others) thank you for expressing exactly what I’m feeling!
I was at a meditation class with my mother this week and when I watched this performance I thought, wow that’s what it’s like to be completely present, in the moment.
David is completely in the moment and his soul touches all those around him. He goes to that place, like he does when he sings certain songs, and it’s almost like a meditation. It’s so rare that one becomes present in his art like that. Only the greats.
In the same way when I listen to him sing and watch him perform certain songs, imagine, lmt, tbwy, sot, angels, celd, and he goes to that place, I feel like it almost becomes a meditation for me as well. The world and my mind stops and I feel present in the moment, just taking in every word, note and gesture. Maybe that’s why my soul always feels renewed when I listen to him.
He never ceases to amaze me.
josie#163 -- “Gotta say that even with lots of not so wonderful stuff going on in life, because of David and his voice, life really is sweeter. And because of David, I have wonderful friends to connect with. And because of David, I feel like I always have good things to look forward to. NO matter how bad the day, or how unpleasant the stuff in that day is, THE VOICE uplifts my soul and I am happy.”
No one would ever know that life was less than perfect. Your posts are always so wonderful -- you know, like a ray of sunlight. No matter how dark and dim it gets, you’re always so full of joy and life. Just seeing you post, perks me up.
SF -- you’re the best! Was wishing for the translation, as I’m spanish-illiterate. Tried being like ronaldsf and just feel the words being sung but only learned the spanish words (that happens after 50+ listens). Knew there was soooo much more………….
abrra & marlie -- agree totally with you on “pop or not”. I LOVE his voice. It soothes and comforts me; brings me joy and bliss; renews and energizes my soul. Couldn’t ask for more -- well, maybe the opportunity to see a solo show or be mikesd & attend the ALMA’s. Anyway, this performance is the best gift, yet. The way he caresses the words just make me die….. and this following his performance at the US Open. Maybe my hearing is off or something but that was just beautiful. Never REALLY listened to that song before but couldn’t stop listening to it until I heard CELD. Now, that’s been on repeat all day (except to attend to necessities -- sorry, too much information).
SB, I was lurking in the chat room when you said something about finding a translation for CELD lyrics. So, for you and fandaforeverti48, this is what I hear:
No existe un momento del dia
en que pueda apartarme de ti.
There is no moment of the day
that I can bear to be separated from you.
El mundo parece distinto
cuando no estas junto a mi.
The world seems so lonely
when you’re not by my side.
No hay bella melodias
en que no surjas tu.
There are no beautiful melodies
in which you don’t emerge.
Ni yo quiero escucharla
si no la escuchas tu.
I don’t even want to listen
if you’re not listening too.
//Es que te has convertido
en parte de mi alma.
It’s just that you’ve become
part of my soul.
Ya nada me consuela
si no estas tu tambien.
Nothing reassures me anymore
if you’re not here with me too.
Mas alla de tus labios,
del sol y las estrellas,
Way beyond your lips,
the sun and the stars,
contigo en la distancia,
amada mia, estoy.
together with you across the distance
my beloved, I am.//
Contigo en la distancia,
amada mia, estoy.
Together with you across the distance
my beloved, I am.
Contigo estoy.
Together with you, I am.
Hope the italics worked.

Thank you, Mollie, for your translation. Such a beautiful song in every way.
I’ve returned to the days of Idol — listen to YouTube if I’m on the computer and have my iPod earbuds in if I’m not. Last night I listened before going to sleep and kept NEEDING to hear the song just one more time.
Probably took at least thirty (?)(!) listens before I really did finally stop.
Here’s a version of the video where some lovely person has included the English subtitles.
My favorite part of the song
//Es que te has convertido
en parte de mi alma.
It’s just that you’ve become
part of my soul.
Ya nada me consuela
si no estas tu tambien.
Nothing reassures me anymore
if you’re not here with me too.
I love this part because it describes how I feel about David:
He has become part of MY HEART and nothing reassures me if he’s not here with me too. Sometimes we have hard days and I have to listen to David at least once or I feel like my day is not complete. He makes it easier to get through life!!
I don’t think David should sing in English anymore….. me likey the Espanol.

Thank you! I have added that to the library at the chat/video site.

mollie -- thanks! That translation conveys so much feeling into the song. Whoah, who composed this timeless treasure? Combine the video and I’m now in a hopeless state of gone……..
abrra -- download of video lotus_b posted? Listening with the words in front of you is killer.
Abrra, your two Davids audio is on SnarkyArchies. COOL.
