A Song is not a Business Plan

When I saw the name of this song on David’s blog, I just had to wonder what he’s thinking. I know what I’m thinking…
Hey, stop, do you hear an echo?
I do, but does anyone know?
Same old thing we heard an hour ago
Different band, the same radio
We broke down on the side of the road
East coast, we had to cancel the shows
I’m trying as hard as I can
But I’d rather write a song than a business plan
Because this is me saying words I actually mean
I won’t compromise this thing just to make it
I want to, that’s a given
But, I can’t imagine the same way as you, oh, you
No, I’ll never do the things they do just to make it
Ohh ohh
Ohh, woah
Ohh ohh
Ohh
Singing soul, you say you got it in you
Something to say, well, I don’t hear it in any one of your tunes
The words you heard you reused
You got a hook but it’s no book
Got no soul, just a look
And this is me saying words I actually mean
I won’t compromise this thing just to make it
I want to, that’s a given
But, I can’t imagine the same way as you
Oh, you
No, I’ll never do the things they do just to make it
Ohh, oh
[Spoken]
Honest and real
What happened to having something to say?
Where is the purpose?
What happened?
You made this all become about nothing
This song is not a business plan
We’re losing hope in the world
Create something you love
Follow the formulas
What does it take?
Say what you mean, and not because someone else said it, but because it’s what you feel
Do you even know what you’re even saying?
Or are you just saying it cause someone else said it?
Do you even know what you’re even saying?
Or are you just saying it cause someone else said it?
Do you even know what you’re even saying?
Or are you just saying it cause someone else said it?
Do you even know what you’re even saying?
Or are you just saying it?
I want to, that’s a given
But, I can’t imagine the same way as you
Oh, you
No, I’ll never do the things they do just to make it
I want to, that’s a given
But, I can’t imagine the same way as you
Oh, you
No, I’ll never do the things they do just to make it
Ohh, oh
Ohh, woah
Ohh, oh
Ohh, woah
Ohh oh
Ohh, woah
Ohh, ohh

here’s what i’m thinking…
of the seven men in that photo, only one knows and really cares about music.
Really interesting song choice for David – Cool lyrics. Reminds me of Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song.”
You know, the first time I saw that pic I was a little taken aback. All the different kinds of artists they have at Jive, and they couldn’t get a little more diversity on David’s team? Might have given them a little more perspective/creativity in his marketing if different types of peeps were represented on his team…just sayin’
David seems to suggest songs to us which “SAY SOMETHING” more than just about romantic or silly love. The songs he picks most always seem to have either an “in your face” or an underlying message. I don’t believe David has “writer’s block” but perhaps the songs he would like to write about may be about the state of world…hunger, hate, prejudice etc, and may come across too harsh & angry which is not “him” or what he’s about. But his blogs always have some kind of “advice” for living our lives in a better way. He should try putting some of those beautiful thoughts & advice to lyrics & melody. He should write about what bothers him deep in his heart, whatever it may be. I think THE VOICE was meant to sing “message” songs like for example, “Imagine”. Songs of inspiration but not necessarily religious or with religious undertones. Just my thought for the day and totally JMO.
Have a great day. Peace!
SF: I agree with you 100% and the qualities of lyric that you mention fit more with the ‘acousticy’ music David has mentioned as his direction.
Marlie, thanks for looking up and publishing those lyrics to the site. I hadn’t bothered, but they are thought provoking, for sure.
LittleM, I hear you on that one. I’m not ready to assume that no one on the team cares, or even that the photo shows his entire team — but diversity is always a great thing. David is truly an enigma — many of the things that make people stumble (religion, youth, reality show contestant, family factors, race) in their path to being his fan might also be aces up his sleeve. If there’s anything I have learned from being his fan for as long as I have, it’s that he should not be underestimated. He has greatness in him. I do my best to just relax and enjoy the experience.
