Are We There Yet?
The Run-up to Satisfaction
Some Archuleta fans are a thousand-percent supportive of anything and everything David does, and cheer just as loudly for an adorable tweet as for a stunning performance. It’s all good to them, and that’s a beautiful thing. Then, there are those of us who hang on, rather more enduring the random tweets and the cheap, horrible album covers (don’t get me started) in order to get to the moments of sublime transcendence such as occurred last week when David sang Contigo en la Distancia at the ALMA awards. For those of us who see this young man as having the potential to stand in history alongside the true greats of the world’s vocalists, it is performances like these that not only validate our obsession, but remind our hearts why it matters.
The broadcast recording of the performance has already become so addictive to the fan community that ABC Television ought to be brought up on drug distribution charges. Families are going unfed, lawns un-mowed, workout regimens discarded (raises hand), all because people can’t seem to tear themselves away from just one more play. But it’s not just the fan base this time. The whispers and gasps and spontaneous cheers you hear in the audience at Royce Hall were matched by the sound of jaws dropping all over the world. Rapturous reviews are peppering the web, and even the one-time anti-Archies at places like MJ’s have not only acknowledged the sheer magnificence of the performance, but have suddenly undertaken the debate familiar to any hard-core fan of just what it is Jive is doing with him and why.
If experiencing this performance were merely an academic exercise of artistic appreciation for remarkable craftsmanship, extraordinary musical sophistication, and a rare combination of delicacy and power in vocal production, there would be little inclination toward such compulsive repetition. Although technique is certainly part of it. The diminishment of the notes at the ends of the phrases, for example, particularly in the first part of the song, are nothing short of miraculous. I just don’t know of any singers other than possibly Streisand who are able to diminish a note with what seem to be nearly infinite increments of denouement before it ends, and without losing any breath support along the way. As a one-time fairly legitimate singer myself, I know how difficult it is to do this, and I shake my head in amazement every time. But let’s be clear: David doesn’t work his Basque butt off to accomplish that because it’s a challenge or because it’s uncommon. He does it because it’s beautiful.
But technique alone cannot account for what happens when certain people sing. The Norman Maine character in the Garland version of A Star is Born tries to explain a certain something, a star quality, by likening it to that “jolt of pleasure” one feels when, say, hooking a big fish or watching a prize fighter go in for the kill. It’s a rush, a thrill, a surge of visceral energy that great performers have the ability to share with an audience. They couldn’t say it outright in 1954 but what James Mason’s character was saying is that the feeling is a run-up to the promise of satisfaction like the anticipation of an orgasm during sex. Yes, friends, there is a very simple and human reason why we keep repeating the experience: It is so gosh-dang satisfying.
This level of thrill and deep satisfaction is only possible for a performer when technique doesn’t get in the way. And that’s a critical factor. Most contemporary singers use far too much technique. At worst, it’s showboating, mere pyrotechnics, and not only is it a poor substitute for true expression and connection, it is often the thing that obfuscates the possibility of connection in the first place. I’ve said from the beginning that beyond his gorgeous instrument and god-given talent, David’s genius is his unerring sense of taste. One of the things that makes this performance of Contigo en la Distancia so riveting is not what David does, but what he doesn’t do. One of the comments on Mike’s wonderful article pointed out how the younger David’s version of this song was populated with considerably more vocal runs and experimentation. Taste is often a matter of maturity, and it is revealing to observe the evolution of David’s choices.
Which brings us to the question: Is it possible that after only a year of being on his own, David has already matured to the point of being able to deliver a performance of such intensity and maturity that the possibility of further evolution is moot? Are we there yet? I think the answer is yes and no. I submit that by all rights it doesn’t get better than this. It just doesn’t. But just because David is able to attain this height of achievement at this nascent point in his career does not in any sense suggest that we are “here to stay.” Material is a big part of the equation, of course, in addition to the fact that any career is by nature dynamic. This is further complicated by the fact of David’s versatility. He is terrifically accomplished in a broader scope of genres than perhaps any other singer of his generation, but not equally so.
We have a long way to go. What a blessing.
– Rascal

Good morning, Rascal! Great reflective piece, as always. I think, when it comes to David, I agree. We are already there, but the best is yet to come. Not only was there so much maturity in how David stripped down the song, but there is the internalization he does. It was actually in those extended licks of his that had me swooning and testifying and whooping and hollering.
What is amazing to me is how musically intelligent he is in all this.
We are already there, Rascal, but considering he is not yet 19, think of how much further he’s got to go. Are you kidding me?
The Internet is abuzz in the positive response to David’s Contigo en la Distancia. Just wait until he unleashes his special “sound” in a larger venue.
Here is one Arch Angel putting the world on notice: David is here, folks, and he’s taking us all to the next level.
Rascal: “The diminishment of the notes at the ends of the phrases, for example, particularly in the first part of the song, are nothing short of miraculous. I just don’t know of any singers other than possibly Streisand who are able to diminish a note with what seem to be nearly infinite increments of denouement before it ends, and without losing any breath support along the way.”
THIS! While listening to David sing this over and over, that is one of the things that pulls you back for more. The subtle changes in intensity of tone, from the feeling of intense longing to gentle and tender remembering in one note. CHILLS!
“Material is a big part of the equation, of course, in addition to the fact that any career is by nature dynamic.”
Ah, and there is the real question, isn’t it? Will David be given, or write for himself, material that will show this enormous talent in any other form than a love ballad? Can he transcend the current propensity in pop music to diminish vocal skill in favor of flash and perform in this genre he seems to want to be in, and still give us a peek at the transcendent Archuleta on occasion?
As I was watching the ALMA’s the other night, Shakira was the first musical performance and perform she did – you could forget about anyone noticing her voice, or the lip-synching, because all eyes were on her belly-button and her butt.
I didn’t watch anything after David, though. Who could possible hold their own after that?
Oh, and as for “workout regimens discarded (raises hand),” do what I do – take that baby with you while you work out (if you’ve got the mp3 download, that is).
Bravo Rascal, excellent article!
I think we all come to this song from where we are and there are a variety of ways to connect with it. For me, it is partly the unfettered sensuality, the caressing of his voice as he sings, but the overwhelming experience for me is one of comfort, of the exquisite pleasure of disappearing into the endless warmth of that voice. There is a feeling of coming home, of being at peace. Maybe this is the girl version of the guy experience lol!
And perhaps the beauty of Contigo is that all of these things, physical, emotional, spiritual, are happening at the same time.
I too was simply astonished at his technical control of the dynamics. Of course, the pop songs that he usually sings don’t demand such subtlety. I remember back to the a cappella Angels, the one where he made a brief prayer gesture with his hands. The tone of his voice then was lovely, the communication and emotion were there, but frankly, he leaped clumsily from soft to loud without any finesse. CELD reveals a new mastery of nuance.
“diminish a note with what seem to be nearly infinite increments of denouement before it ends, and without losing any breath support along the way” YESSSSSS! THIS! And how’s about that CATCH/sound (I dunno what to call it) before the C in the last Contigo…somebody tell me what that is? It is also heard before his “I”‘s in the studio version of Longer “I’ll bring fire in the winters” and in the “I”‘s in the the finale In This Moment and also between the be and alone in “you don’t have to be alone” in SOT. Help me Jesus.
“It’s a rush, a thrill, a surge of visceral energy that great performers have the ability to share with an audience” The run-up to satisfaction eh? I’m pitchin’ a tent Rascal, and I’m a GIRL – LOLOL!
I can’t stop commenting lol!
Rascal says that David “does it because it is beautiful,” that
“David’s genius is his unerring sense of taste.”
This is the deep mystery, the unanswerable question for me: Where does this come from? This is not something you can learn. You just have it.
davdifanLiz – what you said earlier about the nuances – it was that very thing that stops you, makes you have to watch again -you miss things the first several times!
and this: “And perhaps the beauty of the experience is that all of these things, physical, emotional, spiritual, are happening at the same time.” YES!! This is why he is so special. He hits you on all levels at once. He is an overwhelming multi-sensory experience. And he’s only 18….
Funnygirl: “And he’s only 18….”
Lord have mercy!
“Yes, friends, there is a very simple and human reason why we keep repeating the experience: It is so gosh-dang satisfying.”
I can attest to this! I nearly took up smoking after a few replays.
Abrra
LOL Marlie and Abrra! You know, having some hot chocolate while watching is highly recommended.
I had a crazy thought last night…I can’t ever die cuz I might miss something…but then I remembered that heaven is whatever you want it to be – so there will be internet LOL!
FunnyGirl: I told my kids, if they ever put me in a nursing home without my laptop and a high speed connection, I’ll haunt them when I’m gone.
What a blessing indeed!
I have been going “back in time” to the ND archives. Back to the beginning of the AI Tour, the release of “Crush”, the release of his album, etc, etc. I was reading all the great articles by you Rascal, and some, not all of the comments by some of the posters who are still here and some who have gone to other sites, because it’s interesting to see David’s progression and how some of our hopes, dreams, and predictions have come to pass sooner rather than later. As I read, I think to myself, wow, the expectations for David were high but we were thinking it would be YEARS before he would be compared to “The Greats”. I don’t think any of us really thought David would reach the level of excellence he’s exhibited less than a year later! We knew it was just a matter of time, perhaps a few years for David to reach his true potential. We knew then that David is a genius. We knew then that David is an enigma. We knew then that David is an old soul. What we didn’t know then is that what would normally take years for any other singer to accomplish, would take David only months.
David keeps setting the bar higher for himself. Just when we think he can’t get any better, he comes back at us with another knock-out! He’s done it over & over this past year. He keeps growing & learning and is evolving into what we knew he would be..one of the greatest true, pure, vocal artists of our time. He is THE VOICE. He proves it again & again!
And, yes we do have a long way to go…Thank God! And which is why David can afford to do what he wants at this point in time….pop, r&b/soul, ballads, in English & Spanish. Whatever he wants. Not many singers can say that. Where is it written that a singer should be accomplished in one genre of music? David can do it ALL..so why not do it all? I, for one, don’t want to hear THE VOICE sing only ballads, or only pop, or only soul/r&b. I want to savor THE VOICE in every which way, in every genre for whatever mood I happen to be in. Now THAT is what I call SATISFACTION!
After the ALMA Awards and that exquisite performance that has the world of entertainment & cyberspace buzzing, how in heck was David able to go to the Utah State Fair AND the Utah Symphony and not be “sighted” with photos posted everywhere on the net??? Was he incognito? Was he in disguise?
Great post Rascal.
He was magnificent, no doubt. Extraordinary. To all those out there that hate any analysis, let me say this: The only analysis that NEEDS to be done has been done~ he was extraordinary. Remarkable. Fantastic. Beyond words…..
But we like words. And we like to talk about David. So here we go.
“Which brings us to the question: Is it possible that after only a year of being on his own, David has already matured to the point of being able to deliver a performance of such intensity and maturity that the possibility of further evolution is moot? Are we there yet? I think the answer is yes and no. I submit that by all rights it doesn’t get better than this. It just doesn’t. But just because David is able to attain this height of achievement at this nascent point in his career does not in any sense suggest that we are “here to stay.”
I think he is going to get better than that. Better indeed. Right now, his confidence still needs to grow. I add a quick observation. After the show in an interview, he said he was nervous. His nerves were evident to me in that the mic was quivering and he made no attempt to placate Sir Andrew and open his eyes. His eyes were closed the majority of the song. At one point, during the latter half of the song he opened them and looked out and quickly closed them again. He seemed less interested in connecting with the audience with the famed Archugaze and more interested in connecting to the audience by telling the story of the song- which was a smart choice because he “nailed it.” When he is more sure of himself….. as we always say ~ “be very afraid.”
Brilliant article, Rascal. Don’t know how you managed to finally rascalize (rascalinize?) the thing, but you did and I thank you.
FunnyGirl, I notice that breath-catch on the last contigo, too. I am not musically inclined and couldn’t begin to explain any single thing about why this has me captivated, but I’ve got that refresh button going because, as rascal says, it pleases me to hear and see.
David has a way of getting to that place — you know? The place beyond technique and skill … a trusting of musical instincts and a deep inner knowledge of what a song needs in order for its message to be conveyed.
So glad he has that.
So glad I’m here to enjoy it.
oh, and rascal, I love “it’s a rush, a thrill, a surge of visceral energy that great performers have the ability to share with an audience. They couldn’t say it outright in 1954 but what James Mason’s character was saying is that the feeling is a run-up to the promise of satisfaction like the anticipation of an orgasm during sex. Yes, friends, there is a very simple and human reason why we keep repeating the experience: It is so gosh-dang satisfying.” ….. perfectly said. Reminds me of that Pete Townshend quote about Hendrix that might as well have been written about David, especially when he sings love songs in Spanish, in the dark, with glimmers of moonlight on his black hair, all dressed up:
“When he would walk toward the stage, nobody would really take much notice of him. But when he walked off, I saw him walk up to some of the most covetable women in the world. (He) would snap his fingers, and they followed him. Onstage, he was very erotic. To a man watching, he was erotic like Mick Jagger is erotic. Not like you wanted to have sex with him (paraphrasing.) It was a high form of eroticism, almost spiritual in quality. There was a sense of wanting to possess him and wanting to be a part of him, to know how he did what he did because he was so powerfully affecting….. As a man, you wanted to be a part of (his) gang….”
Welcome back, Rascal, glad you survived! LOL Love it when you deconstruct the technique for us. I don’t think he does it because it’s beautiful though. I think it’s artistry in its purest form … expressing truth from a place so deep, he trusts it implicitly, as do we.
Was just catching up on the last thread and I loved this from ronaldsf: “I’m going to stick my neck out and predict that this ALMA performance is going to be a breakthrough for him, in terms of standing out as his own artist and gaining respect as a young man. … He’s going to elicit a whole new set of reactions from many different kinds of people, all of whom will be very, very surprised.”
So true. If Perez Hilton has this vid on repeat, watch out for another “Imagine” level of new fans to “catch” ODD … a true pandemic could be around the corner.
marlie7: “I told my kids, if they ever put me in a nursing home without my laptop and a high speed connection, I’ll haunt them when I’m gone” ROTFLMAO
happy – “It was a high form of eroticism, almost spiritual in quality.”
I’m going to be crude for a moment here lol! Think of Shakira humping the sound monitor at the beginning of the ALMA awards. Then… take a breath and pause. Now think of David, with a catch in his voice, singing a phrase of Contigo.
There’s the difference between contrived eroticism and an eroticism that is “spiritual in quality.” It’s like the difference between sex you pay for and sex with a life partner. One is crude and ultimately unsatisfying, the other is a union of physical, emotional and spiritual that blessedly releases you for a moment from the small self.
Dang it, Rascal. You’ve got me talking about sex lol!
Thank you Rascal. ‘One of the things that makes this performance of Contigo en la Distancia so riveting is not what David does, but what he doesn’t do’
As a side note I was so pleased to see Spanish comments on the You Tube posting, and so many names beyond the usual suspects. Also, to correct something said, David fully breathed life into this 60 year old sensual love ballad (not 85), that has been covered by so many wonderful artists.
I must confess that loved how he shut his ees and was lost in the song, as if he was making love to it. The whole sensory experience is not only beautiful, but feels very intimate.
oops correct something “I” said…..about the age of the song.
Re posting from last thread since I put it up late and some may have missed it.
So, I had this BIG idea to make an audio mix of 13yr old David and 18 yr old David. Never used a mixer before. What the heck, I gave it a shot. Young David was not working out. Caused too many time issues. So, Instead I made an mp3 of David’s performance at ALMA Awards and double tracked it. It’s got a cool echo effect and sometimes the tracks blend beautifully.

“I think it’s artistry in its purest form … expressing truth from a place so deep, he trusts it implicitly, as do we.” — thanks for saying this, TOFan — that’s what I was TRYING to say. And that ability (to get to truth) is rare, IMO.
Happy, love the quote from Townshend about Hendrix.
Rae, I get the same feeling from the closed eyes — that he’s lost in emotion and truth.
Rascal! *lets out a long sigh*
That was the worth the wait! I knew all those hours and hours of not commenting was simply you building up toward this article!
I especially love this part:
“One of the things that makes this performance of Contigo en la Distancia so riveting is not what David does, but what he doesn’t do. One of the comments on Mike’s wonderful article pointed out how the younger David’s version of this song was populated with considerably more vocal runs and experimentation. Taste is often a matter of maturity, and it is revealing to observe the evolution of David’s choices.”
There are so many moments in the song (the bright tone in his voice when he sings “estrellas” (stars)) when you’re sitting there and thinking that was perfect, it was just right. I especially love the high point in the song, when he sings “estoy,” and he sustains that long, powerful note, softens, and then pushes forward again with some of that same intensity. There are so many moments in the song where he uses both diminuendo and crescendo. (Listen to his second “Mas alla de tus labios” – there’s so much there!) This is David being completely committed to doing everything he can to serve the song’s message and make us feel the song. He is not a singer who relies on vocal pyrotechnics to showcase himself and treats us like we’re oh-so-privileged to hear him. David is not a selfish lover.
I’m not sure I’m prepared to agree that David has no more evolution to make in terms of commanding power and intensity and emotion in his performances. There are so many occasions when I have been surprised yet again by this young man’s talent that I no longer think about limitations for him anymore, and I just wait for every exciting moment of new discovery to come. He keeps surprising and surprising. However, even if it were true that David has fully realized his power, then I am completely content: so long as he continues to sing again and again! With different songs, and with material that suits his talent. (Christmas album anyone?)
Oh, and Rascal, I let out a huge LOL when I read your reference to Basque. Amen!
BIG SIGH Ronaldsf… you sure have a way with words.
I am not sure who/m within the National Council of La Raza decided to consider David for this award, or how that came about but they not only did the right thing in recognizing David, but his performance more than proved their confidence in his future was well founded. Thank you to NCLR!!
Raelovingangels, yes I totally forgot that none of this wouldn’t have been possible without NCLR recognizing David’s talent and giving him this honor. If there were a way we fans could express our appreciation, perhaps we should do it.
Rascal, thank you for pointing out the thread at MJ’s. I found this comment from houstonrufus:
One of my good friends from Mexico, where the song is a standard, knows the song by heart. She said David’s is now her favorite version. She said his pronunciation is perfect and he sings it with great passion. She can detect a slight accent when he speaks in Spanish but none when he sings in Spanish.
I don’t speak Spanish but I know a great vocal and this was one.
I just checked out Luis Miguel’s version of CELD, and just want to say that this is a real compliment. So it sounds like our David’s ability to conquer previous artists is not confined to this country or to the English language. ¡Que viva la Archudominación!
Funnygirl…this is how messed up my mind is from all of this…I had to read your “pitching a tent” comment twice before I got it!!
The best is yet to come for me because when David delivers a song “en francais”in the same manner as Contigo, I will have considered my life event complete. Without exception.
There are youtube videos now with subtitles!
dafan4ever – I fixed your 2 videos above. I added a v after the http, and I deleted the & and everything following it. Voilà!
Dang it, no time to hang around today! Boo… But quickly, thank you rascal for the post. Love many parts. Need to read it again. Meanwhile, also want to say I agree with happy. I had/have similar observations but hesitate to bring them up because we want to think he’s arrived. Yes he’s arrived to the next level, he leaped to the next level!! dfLIZ’s comparison to his acoustic Angels is also what I was thinking about. So as happy noted, the next level is doing this with more confidence. This is the gorgeous glorious beginning of his arrival so to speak IMO. I will be very afraid. I am not advocating that he opens his eyes. He should do whatever that he feels comfortable doing. But I noticed the prolonged closing of his eyes and I do feel that’s how he needed to perform this time around. His performance always evolves. We’ve seen this time and time again. From the first ZG to the 3rd or 4th of his solo tour, standing at the mic to leaving the mic, and eventual energetic jumping.
Before I forget again, from previous threads, Kizzi your stories of your dear Mr. K had me in tears – his reaction to America the Beautiful and Contigo en la Distancia. I am such a faucet lol!
sorry if the videos has already been posted! I just lurvvvvv this guy!
OK I LIED! Gee how do you embed the actual video?

davidfanLIZ ha ha thanks! I love this site but that is why I never comment..uhh think I’m internet challenged LOL!
dafan4ever: Please keep commenting. All of us were confused by that dang v thing at first. No problem!!!
#26 Mike – LOL
I am a bit ‘concerned for my health and safety’ with the French. I know Spanish so my brain was overprocessing Contigo, whereas with the French, I will be able to just listen. And once there is video, perhaps from the Christmas tour, and I see his mouth forming French words if he sings it, there will indeed be enough tents to form an archucamp!
You know what really makes me mad? The fact that one stupid act, like Kanye’s stunt at the MTV awards, can get all the media attention, and David can put on a masterclass performance and nothing has been said on tv about it. Ugghhh…what is up with the media? It seems the more trashy you act, the more attention you get. What does David have to do…dance around a pole or in a thong to to get some attention! Geee…lol!
DavidfanLIZ I use to comment back on ND all the time lol! Had a different name then.
Don’t know if others feel the same, but I am so tired of so called artists putting on shows like Shakira did at the ALMAS. I think some have to compensate for lack of vocal talent by dressing like a prostitute or whatever to put on what they think is a good show. Ummm…David blowed that theory to pieces the other night. Yes, she is beautiful and does not have to act like that.
*crickets*….going to sulk in the corner now lol.
FunnyGirl-French is pretty close to being my second language so my anticipation is to hear him masterfully produce a number that will sound like he grew up right under La Tour Eiffel!

“What does David have to do…dance around a pole or in a thong to to get some attention! Geee…lol!”
As long as he sings in Spanish, I am there!
Abrra
Abrra
ummm…think I would be there too! I hate to admit that though…
Abrra, I have no shame…
better would be dancing around a pole WEARING a thong LOL!
Mike – I hope it is all you dream of and more! Seems to me that his mouth can do anything skillfully, gently and perfectly. His phrasing and intonation in English and Spanish are so deadly, methinks the French shall be just as sweet. I truly am afraid of the guy. I wish I could say he is my guilty pleasure, but I don’t feel any guilt. He is simply my pleasure.
Abbra -lol
dafan4ever – hi and I agree about Shakira.
davidfanLIZ – agreed with everything you said. Spritual eroticsm FTW! I said a while back that David is the intersection of the spiritual and the primal.
Rascal – I went back and was reading some of your earlier posts. In response to Being Balladeer, the next to last paragraph at the end, “In a phrase, David needs to make us cry”…he did it with “Contigo En La Distancia”!

You’re teetering on the brink, FG — don’t make us have to get fascist on your ass
dafan4ever #42, I agree with you that stupidity often trumps artistry when it comes to creating spectacle, but that wasn’t the only factor: one thing not going for David Friday night was that it wasn’t a major (as in MAJOR) awards show. It was a charity event to highlight the contributions of Latinos in entertainment and other fields, and Friday nights are not big ratings nights. If I recall, Ricky Martin’s big breakthrough was his 1999 “La Copa de la Vida” performance during the Grammy Awards.
News likes “news.” If something occurs on a major show, then websites know they can get more hits if they feature it, and TV shows know they’ll have a guaranteed audience of people who are interested. Everybody reports on who gets eliminated on American Idol, because it’s frikkin American Idol, even if what’s actually reported was not a very big deal at all.
Friday night was a breakthrough, but it was a breakthrough largely among David’s fans, those who follow AI and its alums, and the show’s target audience of Latinos. There’s a qualitative difference between this and making a breakthrough in the general, mainstream news/entertainment world. That time will come, though, and it will come sooner than I’m thinking also. Just as this one did.
FG #41, David singing French just might be the end of me. However, it will be a Christmas song so perhaps it won’t be quite as deadly as Friday night’s slayfest.
Still, given how skillfully David handled those soft Spanish consonants, I’m sure he’ll be a pro at purring those violent French vowels. Oh mon dieu.
WHO ME??? I am simply teetering on the brink that Rascal built. LOL I’d say the teeter-totter is pretty full today…but ok I hear ya!
Looks to me like the teeter-totter is even

Wow, I’m finding all kinds of positive reviews of David’s performance at the ALMAs. Two nights later, and people are still talking about it. Bravo, David!
kizzi. September 19, 2009 at 8:17 am #133: “You know that place I am talking about where you are in the zone, super aware, all senses are functioning at maximum power…and… everything is crystal clear, sharply defined, colors are vivid and crisp…and….time seems to stand still and at the same time seems endless…..and…..you know that you are experiencing something extraordinary.
“This performance gives me immediate access to that place. Thank you”
Rascal, “They couldn’t say it outright in 1954 but what James Mason’s character was saying is that the feeling is a run-up to the promise of satisfaction like the anticipation of an orgasm during sex. Yes, friends, there is a very simple and human reason why we keep repeating the experience: It is so gosh-dang satisfying.”
I sooo wanted to respond to Kizzi’s post that it was like a having an orgasmim but I thought it would be over the line. Rascal that was G-spot on (can I say that in 2009?).
SF #13, “David can do it ALL..so why not do it all? I, for one, don’t want to hear THE VOICE sing only ballads, or only pop, or only soul/r&b. I want to savor THE VOICE in every which way, in every genre for whatever mood I happen to be in. Now THAT is what I call SATISFACTION!”
Hear, Hear!
David sings the line in TMH, “I never knew what the song was about, but suddenly now I do.” I’m sure he has knowledge of these things. No doubt he has heard a lot of stuff from friends. But I don’t think he’s there yet and won’t be until he has experienced more life including the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of love. Like the line from I’ll BE, “I’ll be better when I’m older”, and believe you me, he will.
Oops, spelled the O word wrong and I see warnings of tipping the teetter-totter.

David was on singing “You Can” with Mike on guitar. It’s a local Utah Fox station.

rascal – thanks again for helping the fan with less knowledge and understanding of the vocal profession in music. Unfortunately, it doesn’t change my position on my love of the VOICE and (almost) anything he sings – I can’t help it. Just know that I HAVE to listen to him everyday/night for the past year (and then some). Of course, I have my favorites. Don’t really understand why and most times I don’t care. My life is better because of the VOICE, for whatever reason.
Now, you would think, with all the buzz that has followed David’s ALMA performance, that his “Official Site” (cough cough) would actually feature the video AND some choice reviews. SMH.
Sorry to rant, but this is a huge, HUGE deal! This is, without a doubt, David’s best performance thus far. I don’t think we’ve had quite this amount of buzz since he unleashed “Imagine” on us.
Oh well. Back to my 100th listen.
Abrra, what audio software program are you using? These are some fascinating mixes.
hell0g0rge0us . September 20, 2009 at 6:58 pm .
Trying it out.Didn’t buy yet.

I seem to be in some kind of zone. I was listening to my Imagine3 mix and watching the CELD (muted) and discovered it sorta matches. I made a video mix in about 5 min and it will be up there for viewing. Just stop in and ask. I don’t think I will YT it. Imagine plays twice as it is shorter than the video. I managed to get it to line up in an interesting way.

Hi everyone,
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there an Emmy for Best Live Performance? SYTYCD always seem to have Emmy-nominated dance performances. David should be nominated for such an award.
Abrra, thanks for the info! Joymus, loving the idea of an Emmy nom for this. But who knows the politics of this and if the right folks were watching at the right time.
Here’s a worthwhile quote I got from IDF:
I feel like my fandom was renewed or something.
In reference to FG#46 – can David do a “GOT MILK” commercial. LOL
Hope I’m not tipping the teeter-totter too much.
And this is why I’ve never commented until now. Marvelous article rascal! It reminds me of why I became a fan of your writings starting from the ND days. And the comments so far….what else can you add?
I’m still obsessively watching the video and still marveling at it. Each time around is like the first time and the rush and lump in the throat happens spontaneously. The pride in my chest for this young man is swelled anew.
I’m not an expert on singing techniques but knowing David’s background in vocal training, I’m sure he employed many of those skills that he has learned from his teacher but the greatest mystery is to how to parlay those skills so adroitly and seamlessly that the performance is truly greater than the sum of it’s parts. David does this so easily and smoothly, my jaw is left permanently open when ever he produces a performance such as this.
I have also listened to Christina Aguilera’s over sung, bombastic version filled with vocal pyrotechnics so much so that the message of the song gets completely lost. Compare hers to David’s and there’s just no comparison! That’s the high point of David’s version for me – it’s controlled emotion. Never over the top and yet powerfully evocative in just the right moments and amounts. It’s simply sublime.
Have we seen the best of him? I think not for there’s much more boiling under that munchkin exterior. I don’t want to ever “be there”. I think the journey’s just starting.
Sorry for the overly long comment. You can’t stop me when I get on the topic of David Archuleta!
Can you spot the five differences in the two Davids?
http://www.portraitmagazine.net/index.html
Within my circle of folks who are not David fans, but who have tolerated my emailing of lots of his youtubes, I have found many who tuned in to the ALMA’s and now wax poetic about this performance. It is soo exciting to hear and see breakthroughs and know that it’s probably happening world wide. Archulove will take over the world, one song at a time. And BTW I just love those versions showing both the spanish and english translations as he sings. It brings the message of the song through so intensely. Just pure vocal genius.
I feel like I’m some sort of “watchdog” or something, but the shameless double standard of “the line” on TDC is bordering on scandalous. Rascal’s beautifully written article compares the feeling of anticipated satisfaction in listening to David with that of the anticipation of an orgasm. When did it become Ok to use blatant sexual terminology with anything to do with David. I realize that Rascal is the “founding father” of this site, but does his “favored nation” status exempt him from the “stink test” that the rest of us peons have to pass.
When FG (#46) made a tasteful (no pun intended) reference to David’s potential “skills”, she was admonished and threatened with the wrath of the Admin. meanies before she could clear her head of the fantasy more than she alone is obviously having.
I have no problem with Rascal’s reference or FGs fantasy. I realize that Rascal is the “great kahuna” of this site, but I would like to apply for the same “Carte Blanche” exemption he has been given by TPTB on this site.
Other than being anxious for news about a Winter/Christmas tour soon, today was a good day for listening/viewing videos of David from this last year. So relaxing on this gloomy, rainy day in KY. Hoping David also had a good day with family and friends…Good night & for David,
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to know when and how to do right by David.
Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests.
Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey.
Keep David and and his voice healthy and strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, hope you have a good night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts!
Contigo siempre en la distancia, con amor!
When did it become Ok to use blatant sexual terminology with anything to do with David.
OK, Bliss, I get that you’re annoyed by some kind of double standard you perceive as being practiced on TDC, but I got to respond to this.
No, you did not just ask how anyone could use “blatant sexual terminology” to describe David after just witnessing Contigo en la Distancia. Are you kidding me?
“Are we there yet? I hope not. I’m still waiting for David’s gospel collaboration, possibly w/Kirk Franklin.
For those not too happy w/the Christmas album cover, I saw this on the Amazon.com site. Perhaps the gift box will help.
“…The album features … a brand new track Melodies of Christmas, written by David … along with … other writers. The Christmas From The Heart album comes in a limited edition Christmas gift box for the initial order.”
Bliss: I have no problem with Rascal’s reference or FGs fantasy. I realize that Rascal is the “great kahuna” of this site, but I would like to apply for the same “Carte Blanche” exemption he has been given by TPTB on this site.
Well, I think you missed a couple of the references of which the TDC Admin spoke. Go back and read the comments again.
And, when you do as much work around here as Rascal, perhaps you too can get some kind of exemption
Well said Johnchang. “I have also listened to Christina Aguilera’s over sung, bombastic version filled with vocal pyrotechnics so much so that the message of the song gets completely lost. Compare hers to David’s and there’s just no comparison! That’s the high point of David’s version for me – it’s controlled emotion. Never over the top and yet powerfully evocative in just the right moments and amounts. It’s simply sublime”
When I heard that David was going to sing that song, I listened to Christina’s version. It was pretty and, I recognized it as a classic Spanish song I had heard through the years, but she did NOTHING to move me and I had no desire to listen again. Hearing David sing CELD I not only heard the song, but I understood it and I craved it. Same thing when I read he was going to sing WYSYLM on the AI tour. I listened to Groban’s version and I thought, hmmm…. nice but a bit boring. When David sang it, well the rest is history for us all.
Actually Rascal would probably tell you himself that he is one of five lovely kahunas here that run this site. We’re all about the same size, last I checked lol!
Bliss – I just gotta say, buddy, that I’m getting a bit tired of having the same conversation over and over and over. The admins at TDC make judgment calls, and there’s always room for reasonable disagreement. There are no kahunas and peons here, but someone does need to mind the store.
Here’s the deal: if you don’t like the conversation, then start a new idea. Change the topic, write an article, start your own blog. Whatever! Do something positive rather than just complain.
Rascal, I love this post. Thank you.
Bliss, I also love your ideas and you always present in a thoughtful way.
This is for everyone who doesn’t quite get the subtleties of the Terms & Conditions.
Many times we have mature discussions here, and there is an analogy in Rascal’s post that fits that description. But here’s the thing….it does not violate the Terms & Conditions item #3
“David’s private life is off-limits, unless it is a topic that he has discussed publicly.”
When we suggest a change in topic it is most often because the topic, or often, sexual innuendo is about David or his private life. That is the litmus test. Making comments about yourself – hey – I don’t really care, although you might want to keep the next situation in mind when you do so.
Terms & Conditions item #5
“Don’t swear, use hate-speech or make obscene or vulgar comments.”
And yes, it is our subjective opinion that holds sway over this one and whether it passes the vulgar test. We do the best we can.
River #72 – so nice to hear about new fans falling under his spell!
(This is an example of changing the subject lol!)
Where’s happy when we need her!
Liz, I’m not complaining. I love Rascal’s article and his orgasmic reference. It’s refreshing that we can now reference “that term” as well as other tasteful adult terms in describing the effect that David has on us. It”s good to know that David is not the only one growing up around here.
Catching my breath, catching up on comments, and I must say that there are so many expressions I can relate to.
happy- “But we like words. And we like to talk about David. So here we go.” Thank you everyone for your words, this thread of David lovin has been…another piece of perfection.
The latest vids with the english subtitles… ahhhh so, so divine (at a loss for more adjectives).
Pabukie, I’m with you in appreciation of the screamless performance. I would give any thing for a concert with that kind of atmosphere.
refnaf: “Pabukie, I’m with you in appreciation of the screamless performance. I would give any thing for a concert with that kind of atmosphere.”
So would I! I’ve been wondering if his Christmas tour will garner that kind of feeling. I’d LOVE to hear a Christmas concert where everyone listens (and then screams in between songs)
yes marlie… I will scream my throat raw in between songs… but pluheeese…. not while the Voice is singing!
A couple of news articles on CELD:
From Examiner.com:
“David Archuleta wins ALMA Award and sings in Spanish”
In response to the poll question “Do you think David Archuleta did a good job singing in Spanish?”, the results so far 642 yes, and 4 no.
Who the heck are those 4 people???! LOL
And this is a great one on About.com:
“David Archuleta’s Stunning ALMA Awards Performance“:
“He won the award for Male Music Rising Star. When David Archuleta started to sing it quickly became obvious why he was deserving of such an accolade…. Now 18, David Archuleta sings with impressive maturity in voice and demeanor. This is one of the best performances of his career to this point.”
Here’s a great comment in the comments thread, from GMAX4:
I have been around for 62 years now, and must say, without a doubt, that David Archuleta, his music and his persona, have topped anyone I have witnessed in the music industry …ever… in all my years!!! What you witnessed in this performance is only the beginning of what this wonderful young man has to share with us!! He has been wooing crowds, and gaining fans wherever he goes. He has been busy non stop touring the USA , Asia, and England since he finished the American Idol Tour! He honored his latin heritage by singing the most beautiful rendition of “Contigo en la Distancia” that I have ever heard!! David was in his element, and all I can say is…there is not stopping him now! I have been stunned that he can keep improving on perfection!!! He is one class act!
Hello TDC. I enjoy reading everyone’s comments and Rascal’s article.
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching David’s CELD performance over and over just like everyone here. The performance just blows my mind.
Ronaldsf’s post #50 is spot on, I believe, regarding major recognition for David. Unfortunately.
Off Topic: To the few of u here (u know who u are) that I have had the pleasure of chatting w/in the “chatroom” just want to say I really enjoy that place and am saddened greatly that my presence there is not always appreciated even tho I DO have the best intentions and NEVER mean ANY harm. NOT EVER.
I shall miss going there so very much, but am taking a short hiatus to give all you a break from my unwelcome and misundertood humor/sarcasm. I need help. lol
Thanks.
Ronald…bwahaha!…thank you for a good chuckle…
“In response to the poll question “Do you think David Archuleta did a good job singing in Spanish?”, the results so far 642 yes, and 4 no.
“Who the heck are those 4 people???! LOL”
I believe they are some truly miserable folks who must have horrendous tv reception and/or low speed internet with cheap speakers.
If you guys are dumbfounded about the less than enthusiastic take up of media re David’s stunning performance, you have to take into consideration that the ALMA Awards ran smack into (1) VH1′s Diva show and (2) The Emmys. The Kanye incident is dying down actually and is now being used as feed for scripts and jokes.
Emmy was broadcasted simultaneously across the globe. VH! has its own TV channel and media stream. ALMA was basically broadcasted in the US and over the internet only. ET gave it a spot in its evening slot.
Considering all of the above, am thankful for the buzz that David’s performance is getting. If his own official website does not even see it fit to have it highlighted…. see what I mean?
Should it get more attention. Of course. And it will. Eventually.
Thanks for another inspired article Rascal. Are we there yet? Not by a long shot. This is not a sprint. It is a marathon. So everyone, better be healthy for the long haul.
Couldn’t sleep, so I came here and read Rascals’ latest article. I enjoyed it and all of the comments. Thanks.
David, is still, first and foremost, a beautiful, stunning, enigma. He is not at the point in his life that he should be able to do what he does. He should not be able to sing with all that passion, and love, and feeling. He should not be able to make me feel what I feel when he sings. I am fully aware of his age and life experiences, and yet I can listen to him sing Imagine or CELD, or SOT or DLTSGDOM, and his soul touches my soul somehow, while my mind my thinks, “How is this possible?” His voice is undeniably beautiful, but as much as I love his voice, it is more than that. As Michael Ormond said, he is a musical genius, but even that does not explain it for me. There is that intangible element that I cannot explain in any reasonable, logical way.
I agree with happy that he will become more confident, and I too think that is why we noticed his eyes were closed more than usual. He needed to get into that safe place he goes to where it is just David and the music. Could David make this song better if he sang it at twenty concerts? It does not seem possible, but as we have seen on his tours, it may actually be a possibility. Can you imagine him singing CELD with the Archugaze in full force?
I also agree with Silver Fox. I want to hear David sing everything! I am always hearing songs and imagining how amazing this song, or that song, would be with David’s voice. So yes, I want everything, ballads, and Pop, and Christmas, and soul and R&B, and maybe some gospel, and an album of covers would be just fine and dandy too. I am greedy.
Regarding my post #46, I was actually thinking about his singing when I spoke of his mouth – LOL! Clearly, this topic is frought with too many interpretations and nuances, much like David himself. It is never my intent to be crude or vulgar, and I don’t believe that I was. If the Admins feel the need to warn me, that’s fine, I realize I have a history of dramatic fangirling! In this thread though I would say “but Officer, I simply keeping up with traffic…”
This is such a delightful place. Seriously! We have the archu-kahunas, the archuwatch dog, (committee of Bliss), a bunch of people on teter-toters, some of whom better be careful up so high, because they are snarkey- AARPies, one drama member who always inexplicable runs and hides, alot of people who should be writing novels, short stories, or at least comics, and everyone LOVING David Archuleta and struggling how written language can communincate it. That is at least what I see from Sunny Florida! Have a great Monday all!
oops and someone who cannot spell ( me), wonderful international members and the heart of the cast who every night reminds us why we are here. PS: After about 100 or so plays, I am close to having CELD in my head and heart so I can remember it always. Maybe just 100 or more to seal the deal.
Rascal, as always your insights are exceptional.
I’d like to elaborate on another perspective regarding the thrill of anticipation that “Contigo en la Distancia” conveys to the listener. I experienced the thrill of song as a universal expression of love and of connection.
I think the performance of this song was the penultimate in terms of being romantic, as in the expression of love with words and music.
The word Romance refers to a feeling of excitement associated with love and not particularly to physical love. And, there are many types of love. To experience love, in any of its various forms, that connection, gives one a natural high that is both visceral and emotional.
I spoke in the last thread about being in “the zone.” The zone I speak of can be achieved by many means: meditation, prayer, hard work, any exercise that releases endorphins and the giving and receiving of love in any of its forms, and this list is by no means exhaustive.
For example, nurturing a child to adulthood and experiencing the highs and lows of that love is a relationship and connection filled with expressions of love; and, that is an experience that gives one a surfeit of occasions for extraordinary fulfillment. Excitement in anticipation, oh yes, both visceral and emotional over and over and over again. It is romantic in a platonic sense.
People in the helping professions or who volunteer are frequently in this zone.
As a young RN working in the Emergency Department I saw and experienced this thrill, this excitement over and over again in helping, in giving—pure adrenalin highs as we worked to save lives and comfort our patients’ loved ones. Emergency Rooms are romantic in a platonic sense.
I’ve seen volunteers who teach children or adults to read, experience this thrill, this excitement and an emotional and visceral satisfaction. And it is the volunteers love for what they do and the people they help that creates a sense of excitement, a thrill, in anticipation of the ultimate results. Volunteering is romantic in a platonic sense.
I did a Police ride along about 10 years ago in my community. I spent 10 hours (8pm – 6am) with several Police men as they patrolled and responded to calls. Talk about adrenalin highs—whew! And they loved what they did (what a profession of great ethical and moral contrasts!) As I worked with them through the night, they told me their individual stories and at the heart of it was their desire to help their fellow man, their communities. Law enforcement is romantic in a platonic sense.
There are many romantic experiences in life that create the ”thrill in anticipation of.” Certainly aspects of those experiences can be physical but that is just one of many facets of experiencing the delights of life and love.
For me, David’s performance at the ALMA’s was purely romantic and all about the beauty of connecting to another through love. As music is a individualized and subjective experience, what that love relationship means obviously rests in the mind of the listener.
Beautifully said, Kizzi.
Kizzi –
Thank you for adding further dimension to my comments. I had actually planned to refer to the endorphin rush as part of the explanation of satisfaction. The “run-up to satisfaction” is not exclusively sexual by any means, it was only the most accessible and obvious analogy. There are, as you point out, many other examples and sources of this experience.
To parse out even further, I personally don’t find this performance to be particularly erotic at all. It is tender and passionate. The sexual reference was used not to characterize this specific performance, but to offer a general analogy for the combination of anticipation and satisfaction one experiences when engaged with great work, great performance, great experience of any kind. It’s also the “zen place,” to use one currently common spiritual analogy. Great singers make love to a song, make love to an audience. Perhaps the useful thing about that phrase is that it implies spirituality as much as sexuality.
Just to add one thought to kizzi’s and Rascal’s lovely remarks. To me, that “zen place,” that “romantic” experience, that “run-up to satisfaction” is largely about connection, about releasing the ego, the small self, if only for a moment, and connecting with the larger Self. This is an experience that engages every part of our being – sensual, emotional, spiritual, nothing is left out.
How delightful it is to try to understand and express an experience that is, at its essence, beyond words. We will always fall short at describing what it is. That doesn’t keep us from trying though lol!
“Perhaps the useful thing about that phrase is that it implies spirituality as much as sexuality.”
Funny, Rascal, but when David sings, I always confuse the spiritual with the sexual and vice versa.
Not that these elements have to be mutually exclusive. If we weren’t coming from a cultural tradition that has done everything in its power to separate the two, this wouldn’t even be an issue for discussion.
FG, Trying to keep up with the traffic? Did the “Sherriff” stop you for speeding? lol
Love the article, Rascal, as well as Kizzi’s comments and your further elaboration. Thank you for pointing out nuances such as the diminishment of the notes at the end of the phrases– perhaps that’s why it sounds Streisandesque to some of us but couldn’t put our finger on it.
Rae 93, It is a delightful community indeed! Glad you include those of us who struggle with words when it comes to communicating about things David Archuleta.
Just when we thought everything that could be said about CELD has been said, here comes Rascal and shows us why he is Rascal.
I just have one thing to add. A while ago after Angelica mentioned how she longed to listen to David sing CELD, I went to I-tune and got Luis Miguel. I listened to it and, not knowing a word of Spanish, thought it is a nice song nut sounds like a very typical Spanish ballad to me. So I didn’t quite know what the fuss is about. Listening to David perform it at ALMA, although I still do not know a word of Spanish, I understand completely what he is singing about. He conveys so many different emotions just by the timbre and tone in his voice alone. The words are almost redundant.
I went back to Luis Miguel and tried to figure out why David’s rendition touched me so much. I realized while Luis Miguel is old-school macho, David sings fearlessly with a sense of vulnerability. His tenderness and gentleness, moreover, is overlaid with assertiveness and determination at different points in the song. The fact that David’s personality represents a new kind of male is something we often discuss here (notably by HG and Bliss), but now we see David’s brand of “maleness” so touchingly and skillfully delivered in a song – something I didn’t hear in the love songs in his pop album. Now, how could this come from a young man who has repeatedly professed to not having any experience in the area of love and who appears to be primarily interested in food and roller coaster rides when he is not performing as a master musician? I guess it is futile to want to solve the human cubic puzzle that is David Archuleta and we should just enjoy the thrilling ride he has given and will continue to give us.
Regarding sexuality and America, two of the businesses for which I had oversight for 8½ years were Clinical Site Research (we were involved in early FDA studies of Viagra and Cialis among other drugs) and a Sexual Dysfunction Clinic.
The most compelling thing I learned from that experience was that a high degree of sensitivity and regard for others sensibilities and comfort levels was of paramount importance if intervention (based on trust) was to be effective—as in people changing their beliefs and behaviors. Teaching and training staff to deal with the individuals seeking these services was as eye opening and incredibly educational as working with the individuals who sought our services.
In the right forum, knowing all the group members and with a high regard for the sensibilities of the individuals involved, I’ll discuss sexuality.
In my humble opinion, I solidly believe that this forum is not the place to deal with America’s mores and folkways on sexuality. But then everyone here knows I am pretty intense and serious and I usually have the less popular perspective.
Yjfanfordavid, I absolutely LOVE this line:
I went back to Luis Miguel and tried to figure out why David’s rendition touched me so much. I realized while Luis Miguel is old-school macho, David sings fearlessly with a sense of vulnerability.
That dovetails with some thoughts I’ve been having, that I’d like to write more on soon.
Rascal, I agree with you. I didn’t find David’s performance Friday night to be sexual in the DLG Milwaukee sense, but rather very tender and romantic. What makes me go weak in the knees is David’s sincerity and vulnerability. I had a similar reaction to “Love Me Tender” on AI, but David’s vulnerability seemed more childlike then. On Friday, he showed the world how appealing and, yes, masculine, vulnerability and tenderness can be. As a said back in March, “Vive La Revolution”.
oops, should read “as I said back in March”.
This morning I emailed my co-worker, who is from Venezuela, a link to the CELD performance, and she called me right away.
She was a casual watcher of AI and thought during the season that David was very talented but needed to grow in his performace abilities.
Well let me tell you she was BLOWN AWAY! She said it was the BEST version of the song she has ever heard. She is a fan of Luis Miguel and owns many of his cds, but she said this version was far superior. She said the beauty of his tone and performance brought her tears.
She also said that this is really a beloved song to the Latin American community and he really conveyed it’s passion and yearning. She said that if he chooses to release a Spanish cd he would become a HUGE star. She actually said that she wishes that from now on he would only sing in Spanish.
Just had to come here and gush!!!
Hey guys,
I wanna start this by saying ive been rather busy with my life which is why ive been pretty absent from all sites and forums of late. Ive just started music college and im doing my best to make the most of it as I possibly can while im here.
But anyways, Rascal, fantastic article and you are absolutely spot on about everything both musically and about David generally here. For me this performance once again encapsulates why I know him to be the prodigious talent that he is. This performance really is a solid epitome of that musical X factor you simply cannot teach, an element that is so hard to describe and discern but yet is the difference between the good and the truly great. It is evident across all reaches of music. David has it as much as any other person I have seen.
Its this ability to transform something from the technical regurgitation of notes into something communicative, emotional and alive. Rascal, you talk about Davids impeccable taste of melodic choice but I think goes beyond that. The most astounding thing for me is not necessarily what notes he hits, but how he hits them. The way he alters his vibrato or fattens or thins out his tonal quality to achieve true harmony with the song. Subtleties like this are so hard to pull off in any situation, let alone a high profile live performance. I dont believe you can ever really learn to do it either, you can hone it and improve it but its very basic, either you can do it or you cant. Its the same across all music entities. To use it in a guitar context, its about the way you approach the string, how you hit it to create a certain tonal release, the way you bend and control your vibrato. Every guitarists strives to be able to do that but only very few who really can.
This performance is one Davids all time best, without a shadow of a doubt. Its just so tender and romantic. I could feel every single emotion without understanding a single word of it. Its a pleasure to be around to hear stuff like this and all of it at 18 years old? Sure there have been singers of that age who are technically highly skilled but any that pack that emotional punch? I cant think of any.
TOfan you’ve got mail
Chenson love “The way he alters his vibrato or fattens or thins out his tonal quality to achieve true harmony with the song” One of the many nuances David uses.
Chenson, thank you for stopping by! I always love your contributions and insights.
I love how you put David’s artistry into words, and what you wrote on Love Me Tender once before, which was brilliant imo. Would love to hear even more of your take on CELD, but I understand that there is a concern that some of the magic and the emotion that is at the core of beautiful music might be lost when you analyze it into its component parts.
Some folks may remember the Geeky Me over at the Artist thread on IDF when I loved to go into those details. I am actually inclined to give an attempt at this myself with CELD – a paragraph could seriously be written about every single line LOL! We used to do that all the time at the Artist thread over at IDF, and I feel David hit another level of artistry with this one. But I too have the concern above. At the same time, I love thinking about these things because at one level it makes me comprehend David’s magnitude as an artist.
In the meantime, Chenson, I totally agree with this:
“This performance really is a solid epitome of that musical X factor you simply cannot teach, an element that is so hard to describe and discern but yet is the difference between the good and the truly great. It is evident across all reaches of music.”
There was something ungraspable and beautiful and special about David’s affinity with music that we witnessed on Friday night.
Thanks Ronald!
Ill talk about 1 part in particular which I think links to part of my first post about his vibrato and tone. It occurs at 1:20 through to about 1:24. David uses a technique that alot of singers, especially classical singers, try to do. Its a gentle and gradual implementation of vibrato into the singing line and David absolutely get this perfect. Pavarotti was a big user of this technique. But the thing I love about Davids take on this is not the technique itself but the tonal voicing of the note. He is sorta like 75% belting it, but not quite all the way. So what you get is this slightly hollowed sound, best way I can think of describing it sounds like hes singing in a tunnel. You still maintain the resonance of the note but you manage to feel this sense of yearning, as if hes calling out to someone. Its such a subtle difference but it has so much effect.
Ronaldsf, Please deconstruct away!
Being a music newbie and not knowing Spanish, I only “hear” the raw emotion conveyed at the primal level when I first listen to it, which is stunning all by itself. The analysis made by many musically inclined writers here regarding the nuances and the artistry crafted into the performance really help people like me to appreciate it at all different levels that the performance so deserves. It only enhances the emotions and captures even more of the magic! So looking forward to more analysis from you guys.
Thank you Chenson!
Chenson, Ronalfsd, and anyone else – ditto what YJfanofdavid said. I love reading your analysis and then going back and watching the video with a new appreciation.
New Blog from David!

Chenson, Ronald and all……
Yes,Yes, Yes!!! Please analyze all you want!
I loved hanging out in the artistry thread at IDF and have been looking for you both to post on CELD!!!!!
In fact…Chris…did you post yesterday on IDF…I thought you had but didn’t have time to read it and then when I went back this morning to find it I couldn’t. Maybe it was just my wishful thinking!!! I even went to Planet Hollywood to try to hunt you down and get your input.
And Rascal…I have loved every word you have said about David since Rickey days! Especially when talking about his musicality! Thank you for a fabulous article and a great discussion opener! Here’s to many more:):)
After reading David’s blog there is only one word to describe David.
David is LOVE. David is the most beautiful human being I have ever seen and the greatest singer I have ever heard.
And….David is very smart.
Why am I not surprised that David connected with classical music? This guy just soaks it all up, and loves it all – from “I Had a Hammer” to Ray Charles to the Utah Symphony.
I don’t know how he knows this, but hope he’s right:
“Look for a Spanish language track on David Archuleta’s upcoming Christmas collection Christmas From the Heart.”
(from Bill’s Top 40 / Pop Blog)
Apologies if I’ve missed comments on this possibility of a spanish song on the Christmas CD, my anticipation just ratcheted up *another* notch!
And on the “new converts” topic… one of my friends who bemusedly tolerates my ODD said this about the Contigo performance: “Well – I’m on my third “repeat” performance… it feels like a blood transfusion. SWEET.”
heh heh
HI, I haven’t posted for quite a while. But I love this site and read the comments every day! I just thought you might like to know that Jive finally tweeted about David’s performance and put the video on their site. Miracles never cease! I hope they are beginning to realize the gifted musician that David is! Wake up Jive! Love you guys!
The video is up on David’s official sites too!
highervibe – I believe Riu Riu Chiu is the Spanish song on the album.
Can’t find Jive Records (is it me?). Does someone have the link. I keep going to the parent site.
Sweet endorphins from Contigo En La Distancia. Can’t get enough of it!
I do not see the video up on “Davidarchuletanetworkning” – his official site?
If by saying “pyrotechnics” one really means “melisma,” well, one ought to tread carefully there.
melisma = several notes sung on one syllable. I fail to see the problem here lol!
Hi Marlie,
Jive tweeted about David’s ALMA performance:
http://twitter.com/JiveMusic
Chenson and ronaldsf, LOVE your insights. “I could feel every single emotion without understanding a single word of it.” I know!!
A perfect example of David’s ability to connect with a song on a deeply melodic level, and then communicate that to us through his vocals alone, the way the best instrumentalists do. So many singers call their voice their “instrument,” but in David’s case, it’s just a fact.
In his blog, when he talks about going to the symphony, and says “I really haven’t listened to a whole lot of that kind of music, but I was just so drawn into it … the emotion in the music is so moving,” I wasn’t surprised. I somehow picture whole notes and treble clefs flowing through his veins among the red cells.
Oops, meant to also say, we can’t give all the credit to David, though. Contigo is one heck of a song. When I was looking up its background for SnowAngelz, I came across this tidbit: When first released in the 1950s, it was considered “so novel and overpoweringly romantic … the song was accused of influencing the birth rate.”
Thank you, quiteblanc!
quiteblanc . September 21, 2009 at 4:59 pm .
Curiously, Jive’s Twitter page is more interesting than David’s official web site. I wonder which page would generate more $$ for the company if they pulled their head from their posteriors and gave his as much attention as Jive’s Twitter page.
Abrra
Abrra, I also noticed that the link they send you to on YouTube is for thop1984 – they don’t even have a copy on an official Archuleta channel or on the Jive channel – um, duh?
Found this comment by la over at Idolstalker.com:
He was breathtakingly handsome, classy and stunning. I will add COURAGEOUS. Here we have an 18 year old who is performing in front of millions of native speaking Latinos/Latinas (?) in Spanish when he’s never performed a song in Spanish before. His pronounciations would surely be scrutinized, and he was flawless. Secondly, here we have an 18 year old who is performing live in an acoustical arrangement before an entire audience of gifted and seasoned performers. That would be somewhat intimidating for anyone! He was confident, passionate, pure, powerful, and professional. I hope that we will be treated to many performances like this in the future.
I see your requests, y’all, for me to point out some of my favorite parts of CELD. I confess though that I’m so behind in everything listening to it that I don’t know when I can sit down and give it a serious treatment! That’s ODD for ya: can’t service my ODD, because of my ODD. Oy gevay.
So I’ve been on a mini Outdoor Bound-ish trip the past two weeks, kayaking the many lakes and streams and other aqueous natural wonders in Northern WI, MI, and MN. All that is beautiful and all that, but nothing I saw on my trip was nearly half as breathtaking as looking up what I missed in Archu-world-news, and seeing that M-effing performance. I’m pretty sure at some point I lost consciousness while it was repeatedly playing on my PC. It was a good unconsciousness though (unlike that from dehydration, or swine flu for example). There’s nothing like 2 weeks without internet or TV, and only 5 days of i pod batteries to make you realize what a multi-mass-com-need-it-right-now-youtube-junkie-cybercrazed-archu-holic you are (I am). Totally worth it when you see performances like that.
This was written by tinuviel over at Snarkys. Thought I’d bring it over, because it is well worth reading. One of those things that makes you say—–RIGHT ON!!
“The vocal things that David does, the fading of notes, the vibrato, the attention to detail (that’s what it really is), all these things are not unusual in some artists. You hear that quality in artists who are steered toward opera and stage performing. The reason, is because, vocally, that genre demands more skill and technical proficiency. Artists who have “what cannot be taught” are recognized and moved into the musical performance style that makes the most of their vocal skill. David defies conventions because he has chosen to bring that vocal skill to the masses in the form of pop music. This is the reason there are no popular artists to whom we can compare his vocal skill; there are none because they are in highly skilled and demanding vocal genres that are not favored by the masses. David bridges a huge gap, thereby changing the face of music irrevocably. He brings a high quality of vocal skill and emotional connection to the form of storytelling that is mass consumed. It’s like a famed gourmet chef’s version of a Big Mac and french fries at every local McDonald’s, and at a value price. He brings to our everyday lives what we thought we could not get anywhere but in an exclusive upper echelon gourmet restaurant that we had to fly to Paris to enjoy – a once in a lifetime type experience. He not only prepares it, but serves it to us with an impeccable quality and attention to every detail. He spreads white linen on our table, lights our candles, and places before us an unforgettable meal……..and we’re in a McDonald’s surrounded by people consuming the ho-hum regular menu Big Macs and Quarterpounders. Finally, after what seems like a long time for us, but really hasn’t been all that long, those around us are starting to notice the difference in the meal they are partaking of, and the one we are.”
dakgal…That is a most enjoyable and informative reading. Thanks for bringing it over…

TOfan #130 – …”the song was accused of influencing the birth rate.”
That is hysterical, and it fits in nicely with Rascal’s “promise of satisfaction” lol! Yup, that song is pretty darn romantic.
JesseQ -#136 – always nice to hear from you. You are a hoot! Hope you’ve recovered from your ContigoStupor! LOL!
There are two soothing voices that are outstanding to me, and the other one besides David is Harry Belafonte…it is out of sync but lovely…
SB
Chenson: Wow, thanks for your insights.
Looking through the tweets to Jive, they were receiving many inquiries days before they tweeted about
David’s remarkable performance. One example below:
DizzyLizzy88: Hey @JiveMusic its ok if u forgot to tweet about David Archuleta’s epic song @ ALMA’s @PerezHilton has about a million more followers than u
1 day ago from web
DizzyLizzy, politely thanked them after their tweet
Yes, interesting that Jive is linking Thop1984′s Contigo vid–thank goodness they aren’t pulling it instead!! Got curious about Thop, clicked on his name… looks like he went to Wilkes-Barre… had a pretty good seat, too! He also has a high quality capture of America the Beautiful.
IT STARTED WITH DAVID’S INSPIRATION
Many of David’s fans from across
The country put their time and
Devotion together to design and
create this quilted throw and pillow.
Our hope is it will encourage others
To use David’s inspiration to reach
Out and help others as David is doing.
The squares are symbolic of hearts
And hands working together.
The cuddly throw and pillow are
Symbolic of the warmth and love
David is spreading to people
Throughout the world.
David’s last tweet…HILARIOUS!! BEST ONE YET! BAHAHAHAHA!
“Are you who I think you are?” I say maybe…”Ricky Archuleta. You’re Ricky Archuleta, right?” I say no sorry. She walks off lol.
SO FUNNY!
Some people just can’t believe that are meeting someone famous. Little did she know it was him, she just had the name wrong!
Maybe she was thinking Ricky – Desi Arnaz lol.
After a very stressful & long day at work today, reading David’s blog, then his last tweet…well, what can I say? He just lights up my world! Love him more today than yesterday. David is a gem!
Good night all, & for David who makes the bumps in the road of my life a little smoother…
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
TOfan, regarding “Contigo” and it’s effect on the birthrate, David’s performance may have the opposite effect. I mean, what would you rather do, watch David sing “Contigo” or make a baby. It’s a no brainer, really.
Bliss #149
I thinking that these two don’t have to be mutually exclusive!!!
I mean…really what could be better:):):)
I haven’t posted in a long, long while, but I just thought I’d drop in to share something.
This is a “duet” of Smoky Mountain Memories. It’s David’s live and studio versions fused together. I’ve had it a long time, and just recently discovered it was gone from my itunes. I learned how to recover it from my ipod and upload it to mediafire! I had inquired about it and no one seemed to have ever heard of it.
Anyway, I don’t know who created it, or I’d give them credit – It’s really beautiful. It was recorded with each track in a different “speaker” (or earbud) so be sure they’re both on (in) to get the stereo effect!
http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=8100dfe919f28f960c814df2efeadc50e04e75f6e8ebb871
Hope that link takes. I tried it myself and it seemed to work!
Enjoy!
Bliss #149 – you’re a rip!
rocketdog – lovely! SMM is one of my favorite David songs. Thanks for that! Hope all is well with you and your daughter.
Rascal, bravo for another brilliant article. I love this,
“If experiencing this performance were merely an academic exercise of artistic appreciation for remarkable craftsmanship, extraordinary musical sophistication, and a rare combination of delicacy and power in vocal production, there would be little inclination toward such compulsive repetition.
Thank you for saying that. He does it because it’s beautiful. His ability, from a myriad of choices, to choose what beauty demands, is breath-taking in one so young.
So many wonderful insights from all of you. Especially appreciate the analysis from those who, like Rascal, have a background in music.
I made a video from David’s Contigo en la Distancia performance, a tribute video of sorts. I was acutely aware going in that any tampering with this performance is dang near an act of sacrilege. I have tried to handle it with as light a touch as possible. It is not better than the original performance…nothing, indeed, ever could be.
Great job Grasshopper!
I consider what you have done as art. Art is personal to the artist who creates the piece. Expression from the heart. Very nice.
Abrra
I had quite a run this past week with creativity myself.
An epiphany of sorts. Such a moment of revelation and insight came while I was making an audio remix of Imagine, while I watched CELD with the sound off.
Epiphany came when I saw that Imagine “worked” when tracked over CELD. Naturally I had to try and make a video to test this out. It is to me an homage to the 2 most outstanding performances ever done by David Archuleta.
Angelica said:
“I was acutely aware going in that any tampering with this performance is dang near an act of sacrilege.”
I do not see making a tribute video as tampering. Its a labor of love and admiration to me.
Here is my video:

chenson#106 – “The most astounding thing for me is not necessarily what notes he hits, but how he hits them. The way he alters his vibrato or fattens or thins out his tonal quality to achieve true harmony with the song.”
Would this be like “caressing” the notes (as many have said)? That’s what it feels like to me when I listen to him sing CELD. And it is a good “listen”. Don’t dare listen to this while driving, as it definitely is not background music……
SF, Angelica…I knew all that voting would pay off. David is featured as the celebrity look in Men’s Fashion News for his gorgeousness at the Almas.

Men’s Fashion: David Archuleta
at Monday, September 21, 2009
A few weeks ago David Archuleta was voted the most fashionable male American Idol by readers of Men’s Fashion Deals (and some very loyal fans). Today we are featuring David in a celebrity look feature. His look at the recent ALMA awards was spot on. Archuleta pulled of a great slim fitting suit with a bit of shine, layered it with a grey v-neck sweater, and a super skinny black tie. This is a great look. Men’s skinny ties are all the rage right now as they should be. David pulls it off nicely. The hint of shine in the suit is great as well. It takes the classic slim-fitting suit and adds a little pop and edge to the look. Want this look for less than he probably spent on it? Here are some ideas of quality pieces to help you created David Archuleta’s fashionable look without spending designer prices
#157
Absolutely.
Its hard to really pick out the perfect adjectives to describe something that is essentially, indescribable.
BETSY – PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL!!!!
chenson – it is great to see you!
Did anyone notice that when he sings ‘consuela’ it actually sounds comforting??? how is this possible???
marlie7 #137 “Chenson, Ronalfsf, and anyone else – ditto what YJfanofdavid said. I love reading your analysis and then going back and watching the video with a new appreciation.”
You peeps with musical brains make it so much easier to understand why what we are hearing is such perfection, Thank you, This thread is a educational ride!!
Angelica #154 — That is my favorite part of the article, too. The last two sentences of that paragraph were an afterthought, added in editing. Then when I re-read “he does it because it’s beautiful” I nearly wept. (Is it narcissistic to be moved by one’s own writing?!?).
What I realized in that moment is that beauty is a lot about what David does, and indeed what a lot of people don’t get or don’t appreciate about him. Even going back to AI, David was always more about beauty than about bombast, which, considering what is generally valued on that show, makes it all the more surprising that he went as far as he did, competition-wise.
Just yesterday I had an illuminating discussion with my boss, that I now see is related to this very issue. I had sent him the link to the performance of Contigo because I thought that this, finally, would easily help him understand my obsession. As someone of Mediterranean descent, someone with a great interest in music (although almost exclusively classic rock), and even a band member and singer, I thought he would be able to appreciate this remarkable performance. He didn’t get it. And when he told me that he watched it by “skipping around” the video, I understood that he would indeed never get it. “Skipping around” — or in other words assessing the discrete, component parts of a work, to try and get a flavor or two and maybe find a glory note here or there — is an all-too-common modern (and might I add: distinctly American) way of short-cutting experience in favor of efficiency and instant gratification. There are segments of our culture who are simply inured to beauty of a certain kind, the beauty that resides in the true fullness of experience; more like the rare and melodic perfection of an orchid, say, than the explosive symphonic power of a sunrise (it don’t take a whiz, as the saying goes, to see the beauty in a sunrise). For those who need to be hit over the head in order to command attention, or who can assess beauty using only the bluntest of measurements, David’s appeal will forever remain a mystery.
BTW, Rascal, loved the graphic for your article as well as the content. Main-lining David’s voice, my drug of choice, haha. I
“There are segments of our culture who are simply inured to beauty of a certain kind, the beauty that resides in the true fullness of experience; more like the rare and melodic perfection of an orchid, say, than the explosive symphonic power of a sunrise”.
I have seen this often in my kids. The subtle beauty in nature, music and art is lost on them….Appreciating the ‘everyday” beauty around us take a dicerning eye, and an openess to what is around us. I have shown the CELD vid to several people who don’t get it cause they can’t take the time to really listen. Sad.
“…more like the rare and melodic perfection of an orchid…”
Lovely! R – your words sing in my head and make me smile.
And Rascal, with all this delicate talk of beauty, I just have to laugh at your choice of the top photo. It’s as if he is saying, “Hey, guys, this is awesome!” and he’s an 18 year old kid again.
I’d like to echo DavidfanLIZ’s sentiment
– so long as music brings him joy, I don’t think we’ll ever lose that side of him.
If you want to check out some terrific comments on the performance from non-core fans, go to this post on one of my favorite blogs (also, incidentally, a rather influential one — consistently awarded as the top LGBT news blog; Neil Patrick Harris has mentioned it as one of his daily must-reads).
One warning: if you are offended by a smattering of explicitly bawdy remarks (some of the gays do so want to pounce on the little chuleta), then don’t go. But a vast majority of the commentary is rapturous. About the performance. Heh.
Rascal#162
“For the human mind is capable of being excited without the application of gross and violent stimulants; and he must have a very faint perception of its beauty and dignity who does not know this, and who does not further know, that one being is elevated above another, in proportion as he possesses this capability. It has therefore appeared to me, that to endeavour to produce or enlarge this capability is one of the best services in which, at any period, a Writer can be engaged; but this service, excellent at all times, is especially so at the present day. For a multitude of causes, unknown to former times, are now acting with a combined force to blunt the discriminating powers of the mind, and, unfitting it for all voluntary exertion, to reduce it to a state of almost savage torpor.”

Bliss, #149, LOLOLOL
Angelica, #169, ahhh Wordsworth, thanks for that!
I’m reminded of the link Happy posted a while back – the documentary “experiment” whereby a virtuoso violinist played at the entrance of a busy train station and only a handful of people stopped to listen. When I watched it, I asked myself, “Would I have stopped?” And, to be honest, I have no idea.
I feel blessed to “get” David’s music and appreciate the beauty/truth, truth/beauty in it, and have tried not to judge those who don’t too harshly (not easy) … it’s their loss, and a big one.
I send an e-mail to the latin grammy suggestion David like presenter in the Latin Grammys ( i posted the e-mail yesterday), and i just receive an answer from them…(translation thanks to FSteven)

You know, I thought you were Marlie7 for a minute there. Do you realize that your avatar is EXACTLY the same? Oops!
David’s fans are truly awesome. I mentioned Happy’s link above (but didn’t have it), so a very thoughtful person just sent it to me. Wow, thank you:

If David read all of this, he would ask…”Who is everyone talking about?”
Could he believe that there are so many descriptions of his personal self and his singing over this length of time?
Somehow we have never said it all about David…and it will continue…I believe that it has only just begun…

I see that David Foster and Andrea Bocelli are in Utah, recording with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I wish David had been invited.

Just keep in mind this is very good exposure and another door open for David, obviously he will continue sing in english , but he can flirt with the spanish market too. I want to be clear in this point because i read some comment in youtube video of ”Contigo en la distancia”. He can do good in both markets!!! Thank you.
A little bit off-topic, but just wanted to say thanks to Rascal. I’ve been sending Contigo to a bunch of people (as I’m sure many of you are) and if the recipient is a new fan, the next question is – what should I show them next? Rascal to the rescue, with his Top 10 Essential Archuleta.

FG #160 – re: “consuela”/comforting… I don’t know how it is possible, either, but I think it is his intention to do so, and he accomplishes it in spades. Ironically, I just jotted down a note from Van Gogh’s “Letters of…” which beautifully encapsulates the artist’s own intention:
“And in a picture I wish to say something that would console me as music does.”
Yup. David and Van Gogh… two of my most favorite and most accomplished–and comforting–artists.
Rascal #162 – no hay problema, you are not the only one who has been moved to tears by your writing! And not just “almost”! [Why do I keep trying to speak spanish now?!?!!
] Your poor boss–or anyone–who doesn’t see and hear the beauty in this performance, that is very sad. It does deepen my gratitude that I can… and do… over and over again!!! I am oh soooo very grateful.
davidfanLiz #172 Oh, dear. I had to do a little backroom work to get Tibi’s comment to post – must have left my fingerprints on the comment
Rascal #162 I had a similar experience to you with your boss when I planned to show it to my sister. She watched and said, “That was nice”. Then she gave me that look reserved for those of us with ODD (you all know the one on the faces of friends and relatives when you talk about David).
I was a tad disappointed. And then I thought, “Aren’t I lucky to be able to see and hear David and appreciate (okay, absolutely swoon over) his VOICE and his skill?” And I realized, too, that I have never seen her fall into a piece of music like I do. She likes a good foot-tapper, or a song she can sing along to (albeit completely out of tune). So, don’t tell her this,
but I guess she falls into that group of people who don’t respond viscerally to music – not David’s and, perhaps, not any at all.
Talking about people who dont get David and our constant attempts to make them get him, well I think I made a tiny bit of progress today.
I have been trying to get my Dad to understand David since Hollywood week and the most he ever says about him is ‘Oh yeah hes good, should be in Disney though’ and it frustrates me so much. My Dad is as passionate about music as I am and just completely gets it, but David, I dunno, it just doesnt register for him. I have tried everything. Imagine, DLTSGDOM, Love Me Tender, O Holy Night, you name it, ive tried it. It just gets a ‘yeah thats pretty good’ every single time. He always finds it funny how my jaw drops in amazement as to how he can call them only ‘pretty good’. The only thing I can put it down to is Davids age. I just dont think my dad wants to like anyone that young.
But yeah, I rang my dad up yesterday and told him to check his inbox as I had emailed him a David performance thats slightly difference and he said he would take a look at it (he always says that with a slight feeling of duty rather than want). He rang me earlier to tell me that he thought the performance was excellent! The only downside is he talked more about the guitar playing being superb (which I cant disagree with, whoever that guitarist is did a fantastic job). Progress made I think lol
Chenson #184 – your post hit me spot on! I’ve been trying to convert my sister but to no avail. Your line “he always says that with a slight feeling of duty rather than want” is EXACTLY what I get too. But, I sent her “Contigo” and there was a slight breakthrough this time. She actually said “she really liked it!” and thought this was his best. She liked the way he looked and the way he sang. (I was quite taken aback). Then, she said he should sing this genre. I like this better than his POP stuff! (I’m not sure how to take this? Is this a compliment? ha-ha) I guess I can’t have it all but I do think it was progress.
Abrra#156 – I experienced something of an epiphany too when comparing our two videos. It would seem that we both felt the need to keep much of the performance untouched. You changed the audio, but left the visual for the most part alone. I manipulated it visually, but did very little to alter the audio. So you were every bit as reluctant as I too tamper too much, no?
The grasshopper and the master clasp hands on this plateau and turning, resume the climb.
#170/173 TOfan
Thank you so much for sharing that…..both sad and fascinating. I know that I would, in fact, have stopped to listen as long as that musician would have cared to share his gift with me. In addition, I would have peeled off the largest bill contained in my wallet and placed it in his case. Between pieces, I would have been yelling at the top of my lungs, “Does nobody hear the brilliance of this artist?!?”
….but, then again, I’m just that way. Life is just far too short to not smell the roses and eek out every bit of joy and beauty this life has to offer.
Marlie #183 “That was nice.” Ouch! This is what they say as they change the subject, or find an excuse to walk away. (Translation – please get me away from these crazies lol!)
No one in my circle of family or friends (except for my new David friends) gets it. I’ve given up.
Abrra #179 – yes indeed, the video channel is way cool!
At work, reading everyone’s stories of frustration. One of my good friends said that she liked David better when he was a kid. Ya know, the growly, hand to the side David. I told her that he is a more subtle artist now. She went back to doing her nails.
She saw CELD and when he ended that intro (“junto a miiii-iii-iiiiiiii…”) she said “Nice!” And then at the end she said, “That was nice!” (Perhaps not yelled out, but definitely more than the period (“.”) nice that Marlie #183 got LOL.) She’s also a very proud person and is not likely to admit that I am right.
So we’ll see.
Chenson #184, I am really confounded by your dad. Musicians I’ve heard of (at least here on the net) seem to “get” David. You say that perhaps your father cannot make himself like someone young.
Well, just makes me think David’s youth is both his curse and blessing. Some people just can’t get past that fact. (It’s interesting – some older folks would blame youth for putting image over substance – well young people don’t hold the monopoly on superficiality I’m afraid.) But a lot of people open themselves to listening to him precisely because he is young. Yo-Yo Ma may be a great musician, but how many kiddos listen to him? David’s youth puts him on the cutting edge of pop culture and positions him to “take” his fans with him and possibly have an effect on the industry. Whether we like it or not, the tastes of youth guide the future.
In the 1960s, many older people covered their ears at the Beatles. The Beatles!!
Like most , if not all, of the folks here, I have people in my personal life that just do not seem to “get” David, either as an artist or as a person. What is so obvious to all of us is just completely lost on them. Some of them even watched AI7, thought David was “good” but, once the show ended, David, like most AI contestants, he fell off the screen into oblivion. Pretty crazy stuff, I must say.
At some point, one must accept the fact that people who seem to completely understand every subtlety of who WE are, do not and will not ever connect with David in that special and unique way that we do. If ever the term “it’s their loss” applied, it’s in this case.
People do not appreciate being “sold” on something that they have already dismissed. It makes them feel manipulated, and they do not want the other person to “win” by coming around. It’s petty and stupid, but it’s also human nature.
I believe that David won back many of the “fence sitters” last Friday night. Had the performance been on the Grammy’s, it would have had the “moonwalk” effect a la MJ, and David would probably have booked a year in his own arena in Vegas by now.
I’ve decided to love and enjoy David with my heart wide open and my mouth shut. Who cares if Aunt Tilly doesn’t like him.
About our efforts to convert: I agree with what all of you have said, yet I’ve decided that a part of the problem, also, may be that we are TRYING. There’s so much joy in discovery. I’ve decided that I’m going to make an effort to be more covert. I may play David’s music when people are around, but act as if I’m just enjoying the heck out of the songs for myself. No, “come listen to THIS.” You know, sort of like serving a great vegetable dish and telling the kids you think it’s probably too sophisticated for them at their age.
And then again, every musician can’t appeal to every person. I do count myself as very lucky to have been smitten with that voice early. My life is much richer for it.
Bliss, I definitely feel ya on folks not wanting something shoved down their throats. (As a partisan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I can attest.)
The only reason my friend said anything positive was because she walked in on me when the TV was on lol. I didn’t say a word (hee hee!).
Marlie 183: “And I realized, too, that I have never seen her fall into a piece of music like I do. *** I guess she falls into that group of people who don’t respond viscerally to music”.
That just about described ME, Marlie. I have NEVER responded to music much before in my life. I just don’t hear what people hear. The only music that has touched me is Pink Floyd and I have not listened to or cared to listen to music since. That is, until I heard that first fatal note of WFTWTC coming out of a 16-year-old. All of a sudden I hear music! I hear joy, sadness, yearning, passion, longing, deperation, hope, and more. I swear I can even smell the chestnut in that chestnut song. Somehow David’s voice found a direct link to some neural pathways in my brain. I have been so puzzled by how or why. Is it because the tonal quality in his voice triggers some brain activity in some people but not others? Are we the chosen ones? How lucky we are!
We should remember that Elvis was seen in many quarters as the devil incarnate, the Beatles were invaders and weird looking, Sam Cooke was booed at the Copa in NYC, The Doors were kicked off of Ed Sullivan, etc, etc.
David is doing great so far. He’s a patient guy, and is not lusting after success and wealth. He will prevail because he is not in a hurry and is so talented it ain’t even funny.
Love me Tender and CELD… aren’t they romantic?

As for others not “getting” it, It just makes me sad that some of the people I am closest to can’t hear the magic.

I saw that the CELD video needed no editing for my project. I never gave a thought to changing it. It was all about the juxtaposition of the performance visually and the audio track I made of Imagine. When they are combined, you can easily forget he isn’t really singing Imagine. His two most defining performances end up being one truly magical presentation.
I never had a feeling I was tampering. I was realigning the universe as we know it

Interesting that we’re all comparing notes after Mr. Archuleta’s ubber-outstanding ALMA performance. I have two new casualties to report:
1. My boss (male) who is non-judgementally aware of my ODD, listened to Contigo today and now totally “gets it”! He was blown away by David’s performance. (I got the nod of “recognition”…you guys know the one!!!) He was like, “WOW, that was beautiful”! He was especially impressed with David’s enuciation of the Spanish lyrics noting that it’s not an easy language to speak much less sing. And he was like, “He’s like what, only eighteen?”! He was VERY, VERY IMPRESSED!
2. My friend e-mailed in Spanish after David’s performance. I never knew she could speak Spanish. SHE never knew she could speak Spanish, but she can apparently suddenly speak Spanish. I have no idea what she said, but there were a lot of “excelente” and “increíble” in there so I think it’s all good! She talked about “hair” and “shiny suits” and then she mentioned something about moving to Honduras, AFTER she buys David’s Christmas CD.
All in all, I think today was a winner.
I gave up trying to share David with anyone long ago. The only thing I will do is post videos sparingly on my facebook page. I posted Contigo a few days ago. The only one who commented is Marlie.
thanks marlie!
They don’t hear what I hear. My husband agrees he is a great vocalist and says that when David is older, has more life experience, he will listen.
I just wish that I still didn’t secretly pine for them to love him like I do. Or just go gaga for his voice.
joner #199, LOVED both of your stories. I’ve been thinking about what I could write to take a closer look at CELD, say yadda yadda yadda about David’s artistry. But the clincher is always what your boss said: “He’s like what, only eighteen?”
The amount of talent David has would be formidable in someone twice his age, but the fact that David is this GREAT while only 18 (what we were WE doing at 18!?) is downright freakish.
Refnaf,” Love Me Tender” sealed the deal for me. I was so moved, I couldn’t move. I watching AI that night with my good friend Don who is one of the great authorities on pop music of the past 50 years. Don always sat and watched all AI performances and then did what everyone else does, rendered an opinion.
When David started singing LMT, I noticed that Don, as macho as they come, started squirming in his chair and looked visibly uncomfortable. Halfway through, Don picked himself up and decided that at that moment, it was time to do the dishes. By the end, I was trying to catch my breath and Don was wondering out loud how the Mets were doing that night. It was obvious to me that David had “hit a nerve” with Don and it, ironically, totally unnerved him He was so moved by David’s tenderness and sincerity that he could not remain in the room to watch the last 45 seconds of the performance. What I never told Don that what had happened is what has happened time and time again. He had fallen in love with David. To this day, any mention of David makes Don uncomfortable, although, he loves “Touch My Hand”, as long as it’s only the CD version. If I ever get drunk enough, I’ll blindside him the video of DLG MIlwaukee. It’ll be all over (LOL)
Hello, someone poste this in IDF if you want send the feedback to the ALMA Awards…just complete the survey

Great story Bliss. Yes, for those of you who commented on the “age/youth” thing. I have felt for some time now that for some people and some radio stations who refuse to play David, that has been an issue that they refuse to admit. To be open to David, you have to be open to the the unexpected. (That someone that young, could be so good, with such brillant musical insights) It is hard for some people and institutions to set aside pre-conceived ideas. It is a pity really, because I have to think those same people are missing other things that do not fit into their neatly conceived expectations. Only the truly cold blooded could not be moved by CELD. However, for some, no matter how moved, they still will not want to admit they were wrong.
The ALMA Awards Show was a grand showcase for David, but alas only a certain segment of the population as well as David’s die-hard fans tuned in. What David still needs is guest appearances in some shows that are known to catapult performers to another level in their career and sometimes to instant super-stardom. Why David is NOT being invited as a guest in some of these shows, considering his immense talent, not to mention his likability and charisma is a puzzle to me. Here’s hoping David’s Christmas From The Heart CD will open some of these doors for David, IF the ALMA appearance didn’t.
Good night, and David..take care when you go out running!
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Silverfox, I really love the prayer for David you leave every night! I just had to say that!
bliss#191 – “People do not appreciate being “sold” on something that they have already dismissed. It makes them feel manipulated, and they do not want the other person to “win” by coming around. It’s petty and stupid, but it’s also human nature.”
thank you. That totally rang a bell for me. Now it all makes sense – esp. in regards to my husband, sister & middle son. They will not be maniputlated, only like to manipulate. Sad but sometimes life is very competitive.
marlie#183, yjfan#194 – regarding “people who don’t respond viscerally to music”. Am sure there have been studies done in this area – right? While listening to some of the other artists perform when I attended the David/Demi concert in Seattle, this thought entered my mind. Just wondered if what I was hearing was the same as the fans of these other artists. Unfortunately for me most of it was barely tolerable – felt like white noise. Sorry, if that offends anyone.
Found this great write-up on CELD over at davidbeyondborders.com (Is the blogger a commenter here at TDC already? I extended them an invitation!
)
Check it out:
Boy oh boy. The magic of a Spanish love ballad at its best – just his beautiful voice acoustic-style, no need for back-up singers, band or fancy background arrangements. His pipes are so powerful and rich to represent the heavy gravity of raw, heart-wrenching emotions yet paradoxically, exude the tenderness of love and the fragility of a cherished relationship with a loved one in the distance. It makes you feel like you are falling in love all over again, with the floating light-headed giddiness thrown in, even if you don’t understand much Spanish – like me. In my case, it reminds me of distant, long-lost childhood dreams of finding one’s true love and (silly girly fantasies) of being serenaded by a handsome prince. And at 4:16, when his voice cracks to an almost rough, urgent whisper in “Contigo… Estoy” – as if he could barely restrain the outpouring of his love that is tormenting him – he has caressed the song to its fullest. At this point, I can hear the crunch of my own heart breaking, yet I still remain enraptured, with every cell within me soaking up every bit of this flawless moment.
According to digital spy, the ALMA Awards attracted a viewership of 2.21 million on ABC. I wonder how many hearts were stolen by David, along with mine.
Maybe I’m biased, but my #1 has some pretty cool things to say about David’s CELD, and this coming from an objective guy, says so much about David’s accomplishments -
“He oozes sexiness in this performance … look at his suit and swagger! I love David’s version much more than Luis’. Why? Because Luis’ version is like French fine dining, but David’s version is like home-cooked food that is simple but fully satiates your hunger. The beauty is in its simplicity, it’s not over-processed.”
RASCAL on #168 -- haha, saw that in my inbox (have an email alert to anything that mentions DA) the other day but was reluctant to post the link here, esp when CRISPY started trolling… but yeah am having a blast reading the great feedback from non-core admirers.
About others not getting him or not getting us/our ODD
-- ah! I have never bothered to directly “recruit” anyone cos I know how frustrating that could be. I guess it is just like the X-factor -- either you have it or you don’t. In our case, its either we get it or we don’t.
It is the same with others liking Luis Miguel’s version of CELD. Didn’t do it for me but I would not fault others for singing hallelujah over it. In case you have not seen it:
Am just thankful that I do get David and have you guys to share it with. Life has become immeasureably richer for it.
JR, thanks for posting the video of Luis Miguel’s CELD now I have heard the three everyone seems to be comparing. Although Miguel and Aguilera have powerful voices, I perfer David’s smooth, sauve, romantic, laid-back, jazzy, simple but swoonworthy, accoustic renditon.
jr – thanks for the video above. All the talk about Luis Miguel’s version, piqued my curiosity. He’s very talented, as well. However (and maybe it’s just me) David’s version was so beautiful & romantic – even before the english translations (yes!). Have an ache in my heart that won’t go away……………
though his eyes are strikingly fixating – they were more in sync with the lyrics of the song, closed. For me, it makes the lyrics more meaningful as they were being sung to a love who is at a distance. I didn’t see it as a flaw in his performance. IMHO.
Oh my goodness, no. I had not seen L.M.’s performance of CELD until tonight. But upon first listen, I find it borderline manic. Overly theatrical. Awkward. Almost like a male singer doing an impersonation of a particularly flamboyant female singer’s version of the song. No thanks, amigo.
comment#213 in reference to David not LM. Doubt anyone will see this, anyway.
Yes!This is it..
“This level of thrill and deep satisfaction is only possible for a performer when technique doesn’t get in the way. One of the things that makes this performance of Contigo en la Distancia so riveting is not what David does, but what he doesn’t do.”
I also noticed a Tony Bennett~like swagger during this performance, his stage presence was stunning! I don’t usually post here..just thought I’d share! Oh~Oh~Oh! David’s tweeting…later
