The Power of Music
Striking the Right Chord
“My Hands” – Fairfax, VA, a cappella ending.
So, what exactly is this thing we call Music…this unseen energy, this enigmatic force that can entertain, energize, soothe, heal and even awaken the soul?
Music is art– a performing art, a fine art and an auditory art.
Music is one of our most experienced disciplines of art. Music plays a large part in making our lives infinitely rich.
Music is subjective, and means something different to every single person on earth.
Music stimulates different parts of our brains and can make us chortle in glee or inflame us to rebellion, with the potential to experience the total array of human emotions.
Music is part of our everyday lives. In lobbies, elevators, cars, restaurants, our homes, our workplaces, stores, sporting events, meetings, places of worship, websites and the list goes on and on, we have music. Music is fundamental to the overall message where ever we hear it—music underscores and brings home the emotion of the moment.
Music is broken down into elements. Wait, this isn’t boring, really it isn’t – it is the combination of these elements that makes David’s sound his SOUND. There is pitch–which manages melody and harmony, rhythm with its sibling concepts of tempo, meter, and articulation, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. (I never realized before the complexity of what goes into music.)
Timbre (and David’s is unique) to highlight, is the quality of the tone or
the color of the music. It is the resonance by which the ear recognizes and identifies a sound. Timbre is how we identify the source of a note, the singer, when it is at the same pitch and loudness. (Smoky, husky, velvety, wailing tenor – what are other adjectives you’ve heard?)
The timbre of a sound, in scientific lingo, depends on its wave form. The timbre of a singing voice is modified by constricting or opening various parts of the vocal tract, such as the lips, tongue, vocal chords, or throat. This makes each singing voice unique. (hmmm…ever wonder about the impact of that paralyzed vocal chord?)
Performance is the physical expression of music. A musical work will be performed once its structure and instrumentation are pleasing to it’s author. As it gets performed, however, it can be altered and totally transform the musical experience.
A performance can either be rehearsed or improvised. Improvisation is a musical idea created without contemplation, while rehearsal is dynamic repetition of the work until it has obtained a state of routine consistency. Some musicians will improvise a well-rehearsed song on the fly there by creating an unparalleled performance. (Live David concerts are the best–full of improvisations!)
And, so, let’s take these two concepts above and apply them to what our senses absorb when actively listening and/or observing David Archuleta’s music:
Timbre
The timbre of David’s voice is unique. The sound waves his voice creates periodically is best described as Power Music. Power Music is a term that refers to music that stands apart, evokes a significant experience, that transforms, that humanizes, that enables us to feel more alive.
When David sings, his voice resonates or “speaks” to us with its unique tonal sound or color, and harmoniously relates to our own personal frequencies (what we hear) attuned to that unique timbre. In effect, he is “singing our song” or “striking the right chord” when we hear him sing.
There have been whole songs that David has sung that are Power Music. One song that was Power Music from start to last for me was the AI performance of “Love Me Tender.”
There are always pieces and parts of each performance of David’s freshman album songs and live performances that contain the Power Music element.
Performance
David’s performance skills are evolving right before our eyes. It is a unique privilege to see this part of his musical artistry unfold and grow. Through his vocal performance he interprets each song a little differently, and improvises with what appears to be minimal effort.
However, he makes this appear effortless because he is able to master the music by repeated rehearsal and total focus on relentless execution in addition to his prodigious musical talent. His current feelings and mood, his now–if you will–as he is gestalt, are also translated into his music adding a distinctively unique dimension to each performance creating moments in the song of Power Music.
Adding the physical moves, the improvisation of melody, harmonies and textures, and, the ever evolving command of the stage, his art is constantly renewed and refreshed, creating deeper meanings with each performance.

Final Thoughts ~
We are just beginning to comprehend the artistry, the gift of the music of David Archuleta. And, we are just beginning to grasp the dedication, commitment, risk taking and long hours of work a musical artist of David’s caliber puts in to create the qualities of song and performance that is Power Music.
David’s music does resonate deeply with some already. He has had multiple full performances that are Power Music, from the first note to the last. As he develops his music, his own lyrics and use of the supporting instruments to his voice, he pierces the layers of the human experience with every song, deep into the human soul as no singer has done in the past.
What is your Power Music?
~ kizzi

Thanks Kizzi for a wonderfully written artical adressing a fascinating subject. It’s hard to top LMT in the power music catagory. I love this performance and Ihave a slide show of the end of the song when the close-up remains, lights start to dim. Only an almost imperceptable “thank you” passes through the genuine but, uniquely tight-lipped smile he wears on his face after this performance. It’s as if David allowed himself to judge his own performance before the panal got its chance…and he liked it. “Long and Winding Road and Smokey Mountain Memories may also stand out as “Power Music”
“Adding the physical moves, the improvisation of melody, harmonies and textures, and, the ever evolving command of the stage, his art is constantly renewed and refreshed, creating deeper meanings with each performance.”
Loved this description Kizzi. Isn’t that why we’re here? Not just for the David that is the Voice but for the David that will be. Watching as David continues to learn, to grow, to pay his dues is part of the facination that “keeps me coming back for more” .
Note to self….go back to writing post on “Word” with spell/grammer check on….then copy & paste. Sorry everyone, too many goofs to mention.
wow, great piece kizzi! The timbre of David’s voice is so soothing, yet piercing at the same time. Combine that with his understanding of what he is singing and the ability to transfer that meaning to the listener…pretty powerful stuff.
Sometimes his talent is beyond comprehension, and we are seeing just the tip of the iceberg…
“As he develops his music, his own lyrics and use of the supporting instruments to his voice, he pierces the layers of the human experience with every song, deep into the human soul as no singer has done in the past.” … amen.
Kizzi- ♥♥♥♥.
I think for many people music is like wallpaper or Styrofoam peanuts- just filler in their lives. The reasons for this are many and probably can be explained by anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists ~ the role of music in a society. The interesting thing for me is the extent to which music goes largely unnoticed today. Real music that is. The background Muzak (pop/hip hop included) that fills every public place and interrupts our silence, our focus, and our ability to interact with the real live people in front of us ~ that music deserves to be ignored. (Have you been in Hollister lately?) But part of the price that comes with the need to tune out the ever-present presence of background distractions has perhaps been the drive to experience real live musical art. I am amazed at the number of people that do not experience real live musicians and real music ~ what you have referred to as power music. It is sad in a way to me. One of the many things that I enjoy about David Archuleta is the number of people that have been awakened or reawakened to the life changing impact of real music, and not just his music, through his art.
Hi, Kizzi.
Oh my, what a lesson in music appreciation! But with all these technical definitions, only David was able to make me really comprehend what music is all about, at his tender age of 17 (now 18).
I felt the real power of music only when David came along. In my teenage and college years I had been involved in musical activities extra curricularly, as in glee clubs, church choir and musical plays. At home, my father exposed the family to classical symphonies, opera and broadway musicals. My sisters played the piano and some guitar, while I had learned to play chords on the piano later on in college from the influence of my musical batchmates who would jam and sing in between class periods. Music was basically a hobby to me, nothing else. I lost my connection to music when my work and married life demanded too much of my attention. Where did two decades go?
Then American Idol came along to revive whatever interest I had in singing. The reality show was amusing and entertaining after a long day at work. It was also a great topic of discussion and debate in the office. Fantasia Barrino was the very first idol who made me cry with her winning song, I Believe. After her, my benchmark for an idol winner is if their finale song made an emotional connection or made me cry. Carrie Underwood nailed it the next season. Taylor Hicks brought some of it on. Jordin’s winning song was better than Blake Lewis’s. Then in AI7, all of David Archuleta’s three finale songs were power music all the way: Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, In This Moment, and Imagine. Hands down, he was the winner that night. Even Simon called it a knockout, and David Cook conceded defeat before the final result show. It was the only season when my benchmark for the winner was defied. The succeeding season held no interest to me after the dubious votecount of the AI7 finale result.
David is the only singer I have experienced who has several renditions which are power music to me. It might be a surprise to some of you, but two of his pre-Idol songs during the Star Search days have and continue to tug at my heartstrings whenever I listen to them : O Holy Night and Dream Sky High which I wish he would re-record as it has a powerful message. His runs and elongated high, glory notes (noeeeel in OHN and the 2nd refrain in DSH) in his pre-teen voice cause tremors to my heart and sends neural messages to my eyes to activate the tear glands. This also holds true for the singular glory note in To Be With You (this waaaaay) and the bridge in ALTNOY (I’ll never understaaaand, yeeaaah). In acoustic Angels, it is when he makes a run during the supposedly instrumental bridge (oh woooaaahhhh). He had an especially powerful and emphatic performance of Apologize in Hartford CT, which I recall some of you called it his ‘wailing’. And it is memorable because of the emotional crisis in his personal life at that time which he was able to articulate through song.
David’s a capella performances are the most representative of power music to me, as I can savor each note produced by his vocal instrument, without the distraction of other backing instruments. Angels. The Prayer of The Children. Be Still My Soul. The Star Spangled Banner. God Bless America.
They all speak volumes and all we have to do is listen.
I was asked once by my daughter why I cry when I listen to some of David’s songs and she does not. I answered her, “Listen with an open heart.” Perhaps she is still too young to appreciate my answer, as I have concluded that those of us who have been affected most by David’s singing -- at least those I have read about and who have shared their stories -- are people who have gone through a personal crisis which needed some healing. Age and experience are pretty much a great factor here, which is why we, the mature fans, all feel David is a special soul with a very rare gift of being able to go deep into the dark of our melancholic past and bring us out into the light. Any of David’s songs can do this to us, i.e. Heaven, Crazy, Imagine, When You Believe, And So It Goes, Love Me Tender, When You Say You Love Me, Desperate, Somebody Out There, Save The Day, etcetera. The list is long and it will grow even longer as David’s career flourishes, a prodigious and prolific example of power music at its best.
ascphil -- your post has sent a neural message to my eyes.
David’s latest Vlog!!
Skiffrower: Great name BTW. I saw that “thank you” too at end of LMT. What a great song. Masterclass Lady did a great write up on it in terms of his vocals and said that writers would be writing songs for him just from that performance alone because of his vocals.
Emmiegirl: {{HUGS}} Isn’t it wonderful to know that we are in at the beginning of his career. Can’t think of any other artist I have really followed from the beginning. When I look at his performances since AI, I am just hit with a sense of all the hard work and the level of commitment necessary to run this musical career marathon.
Dear Happy: I was one of those people for whom music was in the background. Had my favorites, mostly classical for the last couple of decades. And you are right that “real” music isn’t listened to or sought actively by many. I am just grateful I did “hear” the music and it has expanded my appreciation of music and singing.
ascphil: Wonderful comment. Does what I wrote sound like a primer
didn’t mean for it too. I am exploring sound and music as it relates to healing and learning much along the way. And, it fits with my David fan intersts too.
My friend is researching sound and what parts of the brain are activated and the physiological responses to certain sounds. Not much intense research on that but more is being done in recent years. I wish he could use David’s music but it doesn’t fit with his current hypothesis.
And, I so agree with those power notes you spoke of. TOfan said it best in the previous article about climbing into the note.
Kizzi..I’ve been out all day. Just finished watching David’s vlog, now going to read your article…
Beautiful, powerful post, Kizzi. (Opening with my favourite part of my beloved MH def. got my attention! lol)
The concept of “power music” is new to me but a fascinating one. To me, the music that flows organically and authentically from the artist’s heart and soul — no matter the genre, language or instrument — is powerful. And it’s true, that’s something you feel rather than hear.
Beyond David, here’s my Power Music pick:
…and the Italian comment is right, “…all minuto 3.28 dice tutto…” — translation: 3.28 FTW!!!
Kizzi -- Great article and an interesting perspective on the science, if you will, of David’s gift. I think it’s so interesting the he has inspired us to contemplate many different aspects of music.
I think one of the greatest gifts that David possesses as a singer, is his exceptional ability when it comes to “phrasing” a song. I think this is where the “timbre” come in. He has the uncanny ability to somehow emphasize key words or lyrics that guide the listener to a new understanding of the story being told by the song. Frank Sinatra was also praised for this capability. It is a very special gift. You either have it or you don’t.
I would bet that when David sings “America the Beautiful” tonight, there will be people in the audience that will feel like they are hearing that song for the very first time. I will probably be one of them.
“I’m just gonna get into that song. I’m gonna tell it to the judges. I’m gonna make sure they understand it.”…..David Archuleta before performing “Heaven” on American Idol.
I think they “understand it” now David….and a whole lot more.
Wow Kizzi! So much to take in. I had to read it twice.
I have always thought of music as therapy. For myself. I used music to get through some very dark times. I Listened to different genres, different artists. Trying to find who would capture and heal my heart & soul. Finally, along comes David. He showed me the immense power one voice can have. You asked “What is your Power Music?” My power music is anything David sings. He has the power to HEAL through his music and his Voice. Whatever he sings, ballads or up tempo, doesn’t matter. It’s all “Power Music” to me. And thinking that he is only 18 years old and still has not yet reached his peak, gives me warm chills all through my body.
For you ascphil..
And for me..
What a voice David had at 12 years old! What a voice he has now! He is THE VOICE, no doubt about it!
Beautiful article, Kizzi. I’ve refrained from commenting because I feel that I have little to add — only that, yes, I understand what you are saying. I hear that rare tonal quality and I respond to the emotional connection David makes with the lyrics. Can’t wait for more …
Wow, the glimpses I caught of David (I was flipping back and forth since I was watching the MJ tribute on the VMAs) he looked and sounded amazing! Must get complete video pronto!
oh my gosh, talk about striking the right chord.
David was stunning. Beautiful, heartfelt, amazing, soaring America the Beautiful by beautiful David,
Hi all! I have not yet read Kizzi’s article, but just watched David’s performance at the U.S. Open. OMG, OMG, OMG……. I am shaking like a leaf and covered in goosebumps!!! IT WAS EXTRAORDINARY!!!!!!!!!!
If you have not yet heard it, you are in for a thrilling treat! Our beloved David’s performance was OFF THE CHARTS BRILLIANT!! Be prepared to shed a few tears.
Thank goodness for TIVO! I’ll be replaying this nonstop for at least the rest of my life
Can’t quit replaying! That was perfect! Stunning, beautiful, respectful, brilliant! How does he do it…make you listen to the words and understand their meaning! He blows me away.
Here’s the video!
I haven’t had time to digest Kizzi’s article, will have to think more.
I was a busy bee today making this:
Had the song in my hear for a year. It so fits David’s style.
Enjoy!
And please come by :

Watch and chat with all the TDC family!
Abrra
Thanks for the video HG. Where is everyone, chat?
gah LOL hear=head
Abrra
kizzi,
I love how you are speaking my language lol! As a music teacher I deal with the sub-categories of music daily. And I have to agree with you that timbre and performance are the two most important elements of music for the David Experience.
How we each respond to a singer is highly individual. All of here, by definition, are mesmerized by the timbre of David’s voice, that special quality of sound that is so uniquely him. And anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing David live knows that watching him work the stage, and seeing his face change from serious to goofy to intense, and listening to his change-ups is a totally different experience from listening to his CDs.
Yeah -- timbre and performance. Great article kizzi!
Bless you HG. I was waiting and waiting for the performance but managed to get side-tracked and missed it. Mere minutes after he performs, the video appears on TDC. Gotta love technology. Gotta love fanatic fans!
Liz, I immediately hunted down the video as I only caught glimpses of it since I was going back and forth between David and the MJ Tribute at the VMAs. Glad to be of service!
David was stunning tonight! Was worth the anticipation and worry about whether he would be shown on the air. He Never disappoints, always amazes. He looked great too!
I’m glad Lupe (& Kendra?) accompanied him to NY. She will be with him at the ALMA Awards as well and I’m really glad about that too. She will fit right in and David will feel more at ease I’m sure. I wonder if Kendra will be with him at the ALMA’s too?
Good night all & for David,
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to know when and how to do right by David.
Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests.
Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey.
Keep David and and his voice healthy and strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, hope you have a good night’s sleep & sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts!
Contigo siempre con amor!
HG #18 -- thank you soooooo much! I was away for only a day and a half and I missed so much!
Kizzi -- Great article on the power of music to enrich our lives and how gifted David is.
“Power Music is a term that refers to music that stands apart, evokes a significant experience, that transforms, that humanizes, that enables us to feel more alive.”
Just watched the video of David singing America the Beautiful.
I don’t believe I’ve ever heard that song before.
Absolute brilliance.
One more thing..I do wish David could have gone to the MTV Video Music Awards. Oh well…
HELLOOOOO!!!
David was AMAZING tonigh…AMAZING!!! please leave a comment here http://www.usopen.org/en_US/community/index.html
And send a twitter (if you want)#DavidArchie, #Americanthebeautiful and #USOpen this is an special moment to celebrate in Twitter and David deserve the Buzz.
Bye:)
Silverfox , i was thinking the same , but i think now he got more exposure in the USOpen toning(he’s the performer for the nightand the broadcasting go to the world), than in the MTV show (Where he’s not even nominee), and tonigh show is CRAZY, I mean really Crazy…all the attention go to some CRAZY and Rude performers.
Well I am sitting here listening this again and again and bawling… insane, moving, every note perfect. I sure see more events like these in David’s future. EVery time I see David on TV, can’t get over how handsome he is. The outfit was also nice I think for the occasion. Loved the shirt at least, not 100% on the sweater, but what do I know about style, I wear the same clothes for years.
Great article Kizzi- I still am pondering it- lots of meat.
raelovingangels -- I am with you…I really can’t quit watching! I think it was perfect. It was such a respectful, heartfelt, restrained yet powerful rendition.
(the sweater was a US Open sweater, you could see the emblem on the sleeve. He was looking very handsome tonight.)
Angelica -- couldn’t agree more, he makes me feel like I am hearing it for the first time!
HG: Thank you for the video -- I’ve been distracted all day and then David tweeted that he was done with his song -- WHAT? Dang. So I missed it and then I come here and there you have it. He was glorious, spectacular, controlled and just gorgeous.
Kizzi -- Thank you for the wonderful info -- Timbre -- that is the thing that makes me cry, huh?
For years I was a music fanatic -- listening to stuff from every genre and category. All through high school and college I sought out different kinds of music. Then along came the kids and music took a back seat to everything else. I began to rediscover it when my kids started listening -- but it was David that brought me back to a place I had abandoned. He is my Power Music right now. But there are others -- here is one I think you all might like.
Oh thanks Emmie- yep duh- I saw the emblem & was not sure. n Looked like he was wearing jeans. Yes this was great exposure. I loved the guy at the beginning in the audience who looked down at his (ate?daughter? hard to tell the age) and fort of made a little nod as if to say- wow, this guy is good! I bet lots of other there also thinking that.
Thank you for the amazing post Kizzi! I learn so much here!
David’s US Open performance was stunning. His lower register in the opening verses was silky smooth.
And in other news, this should make SF and a few others happy…David won the Mens Fashion Deal poll! And there will be more on David in the upcoming weeks. I love the part about us fans. Yes, David and we are a force to be reckoned with!
Link here: http://www.mensfashiondeals.com/2009/09/david-archuleta-fashion.html
From Mens Fashion Deal:
“It’s official! David Archuleta was voted the most fashionable American Idol after an intense round of voting. His fans definitely should not be underestimated! He has a loyal following. David Archuleta stood out from the rest because of his simple, understated style.
The key to David Archuleta’s style is simplicity. He usually rocks a simple combo of jeans and a t-shirt with usually just one extra item to complement the look. Simple, understated, but flattering. He may add a blazer or jacket. A very all-American, guy next door kind of look. But it works. Over the next few weeks we’ll take a look at a what makes his style unique and how you can recreate it yourself for cheap.
Hi everyone! David was indeed amazing
Slight but very minor issues with his breathing but still major CHILLS! This is the 1st time I heard every word of this song enunciated so clearly
This video is from soundscene -- not HD but not stretched:
And this one, an HQ version from r2rod2
HD version from suttygal -- great audio, upclose shots
MP3 & MP4 versions thanks to Snarkies
Goodness, am not even an american but am so proud when I hear him sing this song! KIZZI -- I think you could consider that striking the right chord and the impact of the power of David’s music?
have the videos been taken down? I’m not seeing any links, and I missed the event (been on a road trip since Thurs.)
raelovingangels and emmiegirl -- I read somewhere, when David was just starting, that one of their dreams was for him to sing in the Olympics -- now wouldn’t that be grand?! This kind of exposure plus the one with the Prayer for the Children -- these could help him get there.
marlie -- thanks for the Hallelujah vid. It is my all time favorite song and Jeff Buckley’s version is of course the one for me. I just have to wait for David’s take on this song and see if he can sway me from Jeff
Am afraid he just might… someday…
I got my friend excited when I was asking him earlier about the exact sked of the tennis match. For years he has been unsuccessfully coaxing me to get on with the game. Of course he was bummed out when what actually pulled me was David LOL
Lyrics from Wikipedia: So David did the first & third first- not the second or last that many of us are more familiar with. The verse about heros, and sacrifices,so fitting on this weekend.
O beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.
O beautiful, for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!
O beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness, and ev’ry gain divine!
O beautiful, for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!
tiny change to the lyrics- but since it is not a verse that is often sung, or well knows, I doubt anyone will notice
Yes- JR- the Olympics should hopefully be on the list. YES!!
TAWNA #36 -- don’t you see the links in my #37 post?

Thank you! I had the song “Sing” in my head for months. Lovely lyrics !
Abrra
Abrra, I just got a chance to watch your video -- oh, those images are so perfect. Thank you for the time and effort -- I, of course, have to download that and add it to my fan tribute collection.
When Abrra mentioned in chat that she was making a David video using “Sing”, I was so anxious to see how it would turn out. Well, the result is more than beautiful and so stirring. How nice that she used a song by our Canadian Idol — it fit perfectly. Fine job, Abrra.
marlie #33 Thank you for the kdlang video. Beautiful.
Thanks for the thoughtful comments everyone.
The lyrics to “America the Beautiful” are always stirring and David’s rendition and phasing makes the song all the more heartfelt and beautiful. I remembering singing it with fervor and pride as a child (during the Cold War--anyone else have those memories?)and feeling the words deeply.
Thanks for the vids JR -- great selection to choose from.
#10 TOfan -- I know what you are saying about feeling the music versus hearing the sound. I agree how we respond to the music is key for us, the listener. Being the consummate analyzer wanting to know the building blocks to answer the “why and how” of anything, my tendency & driving interest is to break things down to digestible pieces in my quest to understand.
Music is a “metaphysical” experience for sure. As cyberspace & blogging uber fans we do spend a lot on the “meta” part. It is pure bliss to validate our shared experience with those who “get” it. So, I was looking at the “physical” part as a way to support the non-empirical aspect of experiencing David’s music.
Music therapy doesn’t have much empirical evidence but it is growing. There is a growing field of “meta” and “physical” information, both researched based and experienced based as it relates to music.
I think Music is a separate language that speaks most eloquently of the human experience and that there just isn’t enough vocabulary or vetted information to define the experience.
So I am seeking to find that information, that vocabulary, so I can explain more easily to others the “why & the how” of the “meta” experience with David’s music (and other music too!)
#12 SF -- The Rockford “Desperate” is incredible. I like the “wail” in his voice. More like this from David, I hope is in the future.
Abrra -- Thanks for the great video.
Oh, and TOfan, those notes Pavarotti sings at 3.28-3.38 are sheer bliss and give me goosebumps -- ah, the “goosebump effect” is part of Power Music….hmmmm….let me see, maybe that is empirical evidence of the “meta” part -- LOL --
Speaking of “goosebumps” I watched a youtube vid a friend sent me a link to of a contestant, Barbara Padilla, who sings opera on America’s Got Talent -- while I can appreciate opera, it isn’t my music of choice; after the performance, Sharon Osborne said (I’m paraphrasing) that no matter what music genre people listen to, her performance cut through them all and anyone would recognize her performance for its beauty; the video has all her performances and the one I am talking about starts at 13.41 -- she performs “Ava Maria”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwURDmIR6rE
Can’t embed this so will need to go to YouTube to watch.
Kizzi, “So I am seeking to find that information, that vocabulary, so I can explain more easily to others the “why & the how” of the “meta” experience with David’s music (and other music too!)” Good luck with that! Just kidding, of course, your post goes a long way toward explaining the inexplicable.
But I suspect there will always be that mysterious X-factor to music — most definitely David’s — that defies all logic and reason and speaks directly to that secret language of the soul.
Abrra, I’m with stenocruiser, love your vid & choice of song!
marlie7, k.d.’s version of Hallelujah (after Leonard’s own) is my all-time favourite, thank you!! Her CD with Tony Bennett is a classic.
Abrra (((Love))) your new video so much and the song choice is beautiful.
*ahem* Did you see lotus’ post? David won best dressed on the Men’s Fashion site. I know you didn’t think it was important, but don’t you see? We have more material coming our way to work with. And he won with people only able to vote once. That’s a lot of people.
From Mens Fashion Deal: (lotus_b post #35)
“It’s official! David Archuleta was voted the most fashionable American Idol after an intense round of voting. His fans definitely should not be underestimated! He has a loyal following. David Archuleta stood out from the rest because of his simple, understated style.”
We are fierce.
Angelica -- I saw that; one vote per person and that he won is fantastic. David fan’s are a fierce voting block. Hmmmmmm….maybe one day he will be President of America the Beautiful and not just a cornfield work of art. I mean Ronald Reagan became President so that isn’t sooo far fetched. And, ahem, David already has his “voting machine” in place and well oiled.
TOfan -- I am a PIA in wanting to know the why -- always makes me the “odd man” out
However, I do have one or two redeeming qualities…I make a mean apple pie and my seven layer dip is to die for
Wow…David…you’re killin’ us here! Anyone watching that who could not see major star quality, major vocal talent, MAJOR style…is, well not on this planet.
That was a great beginning to what will be a great music week. Tonight I have the honor of attending a TV taping for David Foster’s Christmas special for PBS starring Andrea Bocelli with special guest star Reba McEntire. Tonight’s taping will be Reba’s segment and then we will be able to stay for Andrea’s rehearsal. The main portion of the show will be taped tomorrow night. All of this at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. Not sure about an air date yet. Oh, to be able to catch David Foster’s ear and put in a plug for our David! Should be a fun night…
And Thursday…back to LA for the ALMA’s…seeing David live, performing and receiving his award and who knows where he’ll be in the audience!
Yikes!
wow mikesd, you man-about-town! What a week you’re having!
(I will be clipping my dogs toenails this week.)
…”Anyone watching that who could not see major star quality, major vocal talent, MAJOR style…is, well not on this planet.”
…you said it all.
David’s voice is recently the only voice I can “feel”.And I need to feel it, a true addiction, so much so that the words are secondary. The verse of “Bubbly” that is wordless spearks to me just as much as the heartffelt words of “Desparate” or “Angels” or ‘ATB” or “Aploogize”. The list is pretty long, actually, of songs that he has made into my power music. His phrasing is also what makes so many songs that he has covered so much more meaningful to me than the original. Even DLTSGDOM took on so much more meaning after David’s rendition on AI. And just the way he sings “snowflake” in SMM is killer… It baffles me to think what is in store for us as every song he sings becames a treasure for me….
Kizzi, you are a wonder, thanks for this artilcle, peeps like you make this such a amazing journey of fandom..
((((abrra))) nice vid!
KIZZI ♥ ♥ This was a wonderful article. David’s voice touches my heart and soul to depths I never knew imaginable. Like refnaf said, “And I need to feel it, a true addiction”…yes, I need to hear his voice every day just to be “O.K.”.
I’d like to just say ditto to practically everyone’s comments here. Phew -- I kept saying to myself, “Yes, that is exactly how I feel”…thanks everyone
Makes my job easy here!
Abrra -- oh abrra! huge hugs & ♥…so beautiful.
Happy, but teary today reading everyone’s comments, watching that video, listening to David’s stunning America the Beautiful -- which is one of my favorite hymns!
Peace to all ♥
Kizzi {hugs} thank you for your words. I’m like Josie--ditto to all that has been said. I can’t get enough of yesterday’s rendition of America, the Beautiful. It makes my heart swell with pride to hear a beautiful piece of music done in such a moving way--only David could do it.
Abrra--I finally got the links to show up, but I cannot get the mp3 from snarkies to download (mp4 did). Firefox keeps saying it can’t make the connection. Maybe by the time I get home from work this evening it will be different.
thanks again for all the comments
Just want to say :
KIZZI: Thank you for a super article! And yes, that is exactly how I feel!!! (quoting Josie above^^^)!
Love,love,lovin’ the lastest vid ABRRA!!!
Burstin’ with pride over our dear David’s performance last night!! Tears of pride and joy here….
Also wish to convey to all here that I love TDC very much and all the inhabitants (well…all but one, whom shall remain nameless)!!! Although I AM trying to feel the love for **cough**him…….lol(joke, people)
Wow!! Amazing to read this…thank you.
Speaking of David singing, I created a 9/11 Tribute Video in which I used David singing America, The Beautiful…which now simply gives me chills and goosebumps to hear David sing this song in the manner he did yesterday and when the Marines unravelled the flag and David’s voice soared…simply wow! Unmatched.
I hope you like it:

*Commmercial Break*
There are some TDC peeps that are aware of the fact that I recently lost my beloved Golden Retriever (Hannah “Banana”) suddenly on Labor Day. She was only 8 years old.
Although I have received condolences from friends and family, it didn’t prepare me for the sympathy card I received in the mail today from my “TDC Chat Family”.
I know that ABRRA was leading the charge {{{hugs}}} but can I just tell you that my husband was with me when I opened the card and he was like…..”Wow”.
He knows that I’m up on my computer every night with these “people” but I think this is the first indication of what “these people” are like.
I’m saying this with tears rolling down my cheeks.
Thank you.
Joner, I’m sorry about Hannah. Being a dog lover myself, I know how hard it is to lose a member of your family, expectedly or unexpectedly. May your sweet memories of Hannah bring you joy and peace.
(((joner)))
Joner -- so sorry about Hannah. Having been through that with a sweet dog of our own about 2 years ago, I know it is a very sad time. {{{Joner}}}
joner -- these past few days my time on TDC has been so limited so I just read about the loss of Hannah -- {{{{{{hugs}}}. I know how difficult it is to lose a precious pet -- my heart goes out to you.
Kizzi: I believe that music is healing and can be therapeutic for a variety of ailments. There is an element in David’s voice that heals me; it gives me peace and serenity and brings me joy and warmth.
I recently had some dental work done and imagining David singing “Save The Day” is the one thing that got me through it. I’m analytical by nature and drive myself crazy sometimes when I try to figure out why he does this to me. However, after reading your article, I’m getting closer to just accepting it as his gift, a gift that he was born with because that healing element was in his voice from the beginning. It’s there in his early rendition of Oh Holy Night and also in Dream Sky High.
Thanks for another thought-provoking post.
joner -- so sorry to hear about the loss of your Hannah “Banana”…pets are really so much more than that. I honestly am never quite prepared for the sense of loss I feel when we lose one of these precious family members.
Thank you all for your kind words!
Bebereader, I’ve often wondered if that “airy” quality David has in his voice has magic powers or something. It’s almost like a soft whisper that makes you want to lean in closer so you can really listen to what he’s singing to you. There is an intimacy to that quality in his voice, even when he speaks.
joner {hugs}--we have buried several dogs over the years, and it never gets any easier. They truly have been family members, and so losing them was very hard. My heart goes out to you on your loss of Hannah. <3
So sorry for your loss, Joner. I know it can be like losing your best friend. {{{hugs}}}
Rest in Peace, Mr. Patrick Swayze. Praying that all terminal diseases like cancer are eradicated in my lifetime.
Joner, I’m so sorry for the loss of your beloved Hannah. I’m also sorry to say I know how you feel. It’s hard to come home & not see them greet us with tails wagging and with a big smile (yes they do smile!), showing us unconditional love.
I know it’s still very early in LA…assuming David is already there, but it’s time for me to say…
Abrra--your video is so special. I’ve never heard that song before now, but I really like it and especially with David as the featured star. I really like how you allowed us to hear his laugh at about :44. I love hearing him laugh!
Hugs to you {{{ JONER }}}. Never had a pet but my late husband was totally devoted to his Jingle -- I dunno what kind of dog she was but she was big, with luscious brown hair and very loving. I saw the great love they have for each other and how heartbroken he was when she passed away. Your husband may now remember your TDC family as more than cra-zeh peeps eh?
ABRRA & JENNY -- bravo on your respective vids.
ODD ALERT -- untagged, huge and upclose photos of David at the US Open. Just scroll at the bottom of the page. I gave sufficient warning, ok?

I sure do see the value of more pictures and clips of our Man. Its the constant voting for things that have little impact on his career I disagree with. This one is a PLUS!
fandaforeverti48 . STILL no email for you. Did you send through contact yet?

Thanks! I sent you mp3 tonight.

Its what family does. We may not share the same DNA, but we are family. /hugs and /pat on the head to dog who ramins
Thanks to all who viewed my Sing Video and commented here and on YT. My dry spell may be over………….I have about 3 more ideas rolling around in my head . The Christmas Cd may sidetrack em though LOL. I do best where there is a David drought.

Abrra--I got it--thanks

I totally agree Joner. We can speculate all we want but I doubt we will ever find out because I think the mystery is part of his gift.
My heart goes out to you, Joner, on the loss of your your dog. Only a mutual animal lover knows how deep the pain is of losing one’s pet, a companion who gives unconditional love. {{{Hugs}}}
Abrra: Thank you for the A++ video! What other amazing skills are you hiding? haha
Joner! Sorry about your beloved friend.
PS: Re our David, the thinker.

OK night all! I was up last night with America the Beautiful on repeat for hours. Another song bites the David dust.
Sorry I meant to say Joner: sorry about your loss.
Joner {{{HUGS}}} So sorry to hear about your Hannah.
Abrra -- I love the new video and I’m sorry I didn’t see it until now. It’s beautiful.
America the Beautiful should be heard by everyone. I don’t think I ever really HEARD it before, if you know what I mean. Just like I had never really heard Oh Holy Night. He made me listen to it differently and really hear it. It took on a new meaning. I love that he really reflected on it and was feeling patriotic.
Sidenote: David in the Ralph Lauren shirt. He should be the new face of American Sportswear. I’ve never seen anything half so beautiful. Ralph Lauren, are you listening?
JR, Abrra -- thanks for the mp4′s, I was in panic mode; Abrra, would love the download to your video, too. It is beautifully done.
re: the outfit -- my daughter in law (east coast) said the Ralph Lauren polo (with large horse) is very stylin, as is the sweater. The shirt supposedly sells for $150. Regardless, looks really good to me.
Love his rendition of America the Beautiful. His voice sounds so rich and full; been on repeat (thanks to JR/snarkys).
In a world of shallow, mean-spirited celebs, David quietly quotes Ghandi.
I know why I love him.
Joner,
Bless you and your family…from a fellow animal lover who has felt your pain…I send you many {{{{{hugs}}}}}!
What a thoughtful and compelling article, kizzi. I especially like this part:
“His voice… harmoniously relates to our own personal frequencies (what we hear) attuned to that unique timbre. In effect, he is ‘singing our song’ or ‘striking the right chord’ when we hear him sing.”
That’s one of the greatest mysteries of music to me -- how, as an external source, music manages to evoke something very individual and intimate from us. We feel it as individuals, but at the same time someone is connecting to us from outside, yes? And others are feeling something as well? Music becomes both very intimate and universal.
Oh, and P.S. -- Wasn’t that an amazing rendition of America the Beautiful? And a bold and daring one as well?
Abrra -- sorry I missed you. I’m sure you won’t see my email til the morning. Am on the late nite (west coast) squad. Never get on the computer till 9pm (midnite east coast). Husband’s feeling neglected lately -- said he wished he was David.
As Josie said “David’s voice touches my heart and soul to depths I never knew imaginable. Like refnaf said, “And I need to feel it, a true addiction”…yes, I need to hear his voice every day just to be “O.K.”.”
This is the basis of my addiction. Can survive w/o the computer, youtube vids, tv appearances but not the music. Have not gone a day w/o the music for over a year. Scary, I know. The rest is a treat or desert/frosting on the cake. Am not totally clear about the “power music”. Just know I love listening to his voice singing.
Love these words -- they enrapture my soul. “David’s music does resonate deeply with some already. He has had multiple full performances that are Power Music, from the first note to the last. As he develops his music, his own lyrics and use of the supporting instruments to his voice, he pierces the layers of the human experience with every song, deep into the human soul as no singer has done in the past.”
Kizzi -- thanks for this awesome article. I need to read it again.
Joner -- hugs to you!
Abrra -- nice video!
I am over the moon that he quoted Ghandi. He is so brilliant.
Joner -- having 2 goldens myself, my heart goes out to you. Regardless of the breed -- dogs -- animals -- provide unconditional love every day -- hope you get to feel that love again very soon.
hey joner, hugs from another dog owner/lover. They can be such characters, and the unconditional love they offer is very special. “He hath a share of mans’s intelligence, but no share of man’s falsehood” Sir Walter Scott.
Thank you everyone for your kind & thoughtful comments. I appreciate the time all of you took to read my thoughts and comment.
Josie & Refnaf -- good to see you both (((Hugs)))
Joner -- I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your pet.
ronaldsf -- I agree with you about the power of David’s performance of “America the Beautiful.” And, I agree with the “bold & daring” description. Different in so many ways with many David flourishes -- we can see his genius at work on this song; and bold due to its difference and at a highly televised event around the world and he sings it for the first time in that highly visible venue. Brave!
Mr. Kizzi wasn’t able to watch the Women’s Single Final Sunday night. Early yesterday I was playing a YouTube recording through computer speakers of David’s performance and Mr. K stopped in his tracks, put his hand over his heart (he’s a Navy man -- “Guam is Good”--Navy people get this) and had tears in his eyes. He had me play that last “A -- MERRR -- IC -- K-A-A-A” over and over again. Yes, oh yes, ronaldsf, that was Power Music on so many levels--it ticked ALL THE BOXES.
I do believe that a few more people in this world just got a taste of the magic of David’s music. And, although addictive, it is fat free, full of natural endorphins and leads to a myriad of great human experiences, one of which is realizing enriching friendships with people all over the world.
How’d we get to be so lucky?
OK kids, I’ve got to give you a little recap of last night..I know it wasn’t David but I can always find a tie in.. but first things first… Joner, my sincere condolences to you. Having lost several pets over the years (mostly cats) I can understand the profound sense of loss you are going through. All I can say is grieve, grieve but also remember all of the wonderful moments you have had. Somehow they balance each other and make it just a touch easier. Also remember that you brought shelter, care and love to that special animal…
Last night’s experience was a bit mind blowing. There were only 70 of us in the audience in the first three rows of the Kodak. Lots of stage people and then sauntering in…David Foster sitting at his piano. Next Reba kind of sauntered in and took her place near the piano. We were there as a “casted audience” to record her performance with Andrea Bocelli because she wasn’t available tonight for the real taping. The set was Christmas…tree, fireplace, lighting, etc. and all I could see was David standing there doing a Christmas number or two. It was like being in a recording studio-some banter back and forth with us and then hearing Reba and Andrea sing together. At only 12 feet away it was just amazing… Then after a run through several times and a tape down we were dismissed. I swear if David Foster wasn’t engaged in conversation with Andrea I could have asked him about David A. The timing just wasn’t appropriate. So close yet so far…
I really think we need to lobby David Foster somehow through his label, studio, whatever… It would be life changing if he could get his grip and influence on David Archuleta.
After I left the theater I walked back over to the plaza where David did the Christmas Tree lighting and who was just taking the stage for a free concert?? Kelly Clarkson! So I got to watch her for about an hour before heading to the car and sailing home to San Diego. What a fun night!
Kizzi….
Count me in as some of the already…Most of David’s music is power music to me but one that he has never performed and I hope and pray that he does one day, that hits me in the gut and which reduces me to tears with such a feeling of hope every time I listen to Save the Day….
Joner….(((hugs)))
SF…Once again thank you for the nightly prayer.
Mike…one more day! I’m conflicted..Do I want to know? Yes I do! lol

“I really think we need to lobby David Foster somehow through his label, studio, whatever… It would be life changing if he could get his grip and influence on David Archuleta.”
I couldn’t agree more. I’m a big fan of David Foster myself but I think you and I are in the minority. Most of the folks here seem to think he’s a bit moldy for David. But, hey, some of the best cheeses have mold on them, am I right???
Marlie #33:
“Hallelujah” is a favorite of mine, too. In fact I almost submitted it for TDC’s “Song in the Series” as a suggestion for David to sing but got caught up wondering how David would handle his name in the first line…. heh!
Hallelujah lyrics (first line):
Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has been covered by so many artists….including:
Rufus Wainwright
and
Jeff Buckley
but my personal favorite is the stripped version by:
Jon Bon Jovi
Mikesd -- too much fun! Wish I could have been sitting next to you!

Abrra
joner… David Foster has helped so many incredible performers skyrocket their careers! If you look at his tour this winter it includes Michael Johns, Charice, Peter Cetera, Ruben Studdards and several more. David would hugely benefit from his influence. He is working on Andrea Bocelli’s Christmas CD… that’s credential enough for me!!
Thanks for posting the ALMA Awards promo!! So excited!
mike and joner…
Is David Foster interested in David? If not, why not? I just don’t understand, Michael Johns over David…pleeeeeease!
Ok…done.
Kizzi, excellent article. I’m always amazed at the talented writers here.
Joner, I’m so very sorry for your loss. I have almost always had dogs, and pets are always family.
bebe, thanks for the links to the renditions of “Hallelujah”
Mike!!!! what fun! I can’t wait for your recap of the ALMA taping!!! I have a feeling it is going to be another one of those special David moments…
Kizzi,
Thanks for your informative lesson on the Power of Music. I so enjoy being a student of all things David -- so much to learn, explore, contemplate and savor about this fascinating young man. Amazing articles still being written after all these months…David inspires a wellspring of inspiration to TDCers on a daily basis
I surely felt the power of his music with those soaring vocals in his soulful rendition of America the Beautiful. David should be commissioned to sing every patriotic song out there…who else can compare?!
And TOfan, I’m late to the party regarding your last article. You are a frickin riot!! I laughed myself till I practically peed. I will add that whenever I tank up at the mega pump gas stations, I blast Zero Gravity for all to hear. Gotten some weird looks…who cares…but every now and then someone will ask who’s singing, and I’m only too happy to identify the owner of THE VOICE!
So sad for your loss, Joner. Know what that feels like… {{{HUGS}}}
This looks so purty!!!!!

NEWS RELEASE
QUILT TO BENEFIT RISING STAR OUTREACH
INSPIRED BY DAVID ARCHULETA
During the seventh season of American Idol, people across the world came to know and love the beautiful voice and talent of 18 year old vocal artist David Archuleta. For the past year, Archuleta has traveled across the United States, into Canada, and overseas to Malaysia, Singapore, the UK, and the Philippines sharing his voice and music with his rapidly growing fan base.
When not performing on stage, David uses his voice and spirit for another purpose. He works diligently to raise awareness and encourage participation in charities to benefit others. David’s inspirational message and giving spirit, have propelled many into positive action in support of his targeted charities. The organization “Angels For A Cause,” composed of David Archuleta fans works cooperatively or in teams to achieve designated goals.
One of David’s identified charities, RISING STAR OUTREACH (RSO), works to improve the lives of individuals affected with leprosy in India. Funding is currently being sought to build and furnish a new school for the children in the leprosy colony. Fueled by desire for RSO to reach its goal, a team of “Angels For A Cause” members called “Hearts & Hands” have worked to create something very unique and special.
With contributions of supplies, embroidery, and construction efforts from team members nationwide, a “David inspired” quilted throw and pillow have been lovingly created. The two pieces include hand embroidered “fan chosen David Archuleta phrases” and were both autographed by David himself on August 8th, 2009. At this time, he expressed great appreciation for the efforts being made to benefit RSO. Both items titled “Gifts From The Heart,” will be auctioned and will also include the (soon to be released) David Archuleta Christmas album “CHRISTMAS FROM THE HEART”(currently available by preorder on Amazon.com).
Bids for the items can be placed separately on e-bay.com from October 1st at 12midnight ET through October 10th with the auction ending on October 10th, 2009 at 12 midnight ET.
ALL proceeds to benefit RSO.
TESTIMONIAL: IT ALL STARTED WITH DAVID
I’ve been involved in charity work for various family members. So I often wonder what propels me to want to help David Archuleta and honor him! Of course there is his music and talent, but more than that, it is his genuine, character and humble spirit that has been an inspiration, in spite of knowing that some folks may wonder why I want to be involved. It’s a priviledge to give back a little to help others, and in the same time to honor David, for he gives so much of his time and of himself.
I’m attending the US Olympic Trials for the speedskating athletes, who are competing to qualify for the US team to go to the Winter Games in 2010. I have spoken to several fans and also the parents of the athletes. There are many fans here who also support David and other fans who were very interested in our charity project. That fact alone was very heart-warming to me!
Lastly, upon hearing of this current project, I was able to reconnect with an online fan-friend whom I thought I had lost contact.
Shosh: Thank you so much for sharing this….please do add as you go along. You did good with the video embedding
BEBEREADER, MARLIE, REFNAF -- you may want to check out this live version of Buckley’s Hallelujah. Watch out for counter 5:55 for that extended breathless note -- whew!
The genius of this performance for me is its utter simplicity. It is an outpouring of naked emotion made more pronounced by the plaintive strains of the guitar. Raw to the core, this Hallelujah is like an earnest, whispered prayer.
Such power in music is inescapable. Hence, ODD perhaps?
DJAFAN -- thanks for posting the ALMA link. Am giddy like a loco here in the office seeing David’s name front and center in the billing. His name even looks larger than the rest. Yay!
Joner, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. My heart goes out to you. I still well up with sadness when I think about our little pet that we lost a few months ago. To echo mikesd’s sentiments, I am so grateful to have found her in the first place and will cherish the time I had with her.
Now..onto happier thoughts. David and the ALMAs! I loved seeing him on on a major network. Thank you for the link djafan/#98!
As per David’s latest tweet, the man is focusing on his push-up technique. That should get a few posters around here going!
Long day today so it was really nice to come in here to the videos posted, “Save The Day” by David and “Hallelujah” by various artists. Very nice!
This is going to sound very weird. Don’t know why, but I had a dream last night that David was collaborating with…you’ll never guess??…BABYFACE! I have no idea where that dream came from! I hadn’t heard music by Babyface in a very long time, so I was surprised when I woke up and thought about the dream which was VERY VIVID. I thought WTH?? Babyface?? hahaha.
A dream about David & David Foster would have been more realistic!
Then I googled Babyface (Kenneth Edmonds) to see what he’s been up to since “The Cool In You” & “Whip Appeal”, and turns out he has collaborated with some BIG names including David Foster! How about that! And Babyface is no longer a “babyface”. He’s 50 years old! My, my! Where have the years gone?
Good night all & for David,
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.

David, hope you have a good night’s sleep & sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts!
Contigo siempre con amor!
Saw this posted at Snarkies:
COLE was listening to Radio Disney and the DJ said this:
“David Archuleta. Man, that kid is popping up everywhere. Did you see him at the U.S. Open? He was AMAZING. Like I was like ‘woah.’ *silence* I was just blown away. I mean, I wonder if he even knows how good he is. He is just -- that kid has some pipes! Every time he comes into the studio I tell tell him how good good he is. He can SING. I mean wow! PIPES.”
Tee-hee
Kizzi! Thank you for a great article. I too love the analyzing, the quest for understanding. As more research is done in the field of music, maybe we’ll finally find out that we are not crazy after all!
Off the top of my head, my power music would have to be David’s How Great Thou Art. There are many more, but that one has me choked up at the end every single time. It just grabs my heart and I feel I get everything he is telling us through the song, the notes, the lyrics. It is truly powerful.
Like others, I feel Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley sung live is another power song for me and also Gravity by Sara Bareilles sung at The Fillmore in SF.
Joner, I too want to send you ((((hugs)))). Refnaf said it best with the quote “He hath a share of mans’s intelligence, but no share of man’s falsehood”. I so agree.
Gosh, I didn’t check TDC for just a day and the comments have gone past the hundred mark!
Joner, I’m sorry about your beloved pet. They do feel like family when they’ve lived with you for years. I recall my assistant cried at work when she found out her 11-year old chinchilla cat died. She asked me to take the rest of the day off, and I allowed her because she couldn’t get any work done and because our co-workers might think I scolded her for something.
emmiegirl#6: Aww, I didn’t mean to. (But then, I was wondering if the neural message my post sent to your eyes was because it was too lengthy, lol!)
SF#12, thanks for embedding the Dream Sky High vid for me. I was thinking of embedding another which had varied images of the firmament but forgot to do so because my post got too long. David’s runs in that song is so unbelievable for a pre-teener!
Bebereader#70, I agree with you that David was born with such a rare gift, and that the after effect of the vocal paralysis just made it more precious.
Betsy#83, I was like you about the song O Holy Night. For me it was just one of those traditional Christmas songs. But David’s pre-teen rendition of it made me see it in a whole new other meaningful light. He amazingly transforms a seemingly ordinary song into a masterful work of art! Just like he did with so many other songs, and just recently with America the Beautiful.
mikesd#93, I do hope Charice’s duet with David will pave the way for him to be introduced to and do collaborative work with David Foster. I recall that before the AI7 finale results show Foster was interviewed on who he thinks should win the Idol crown and he gave our David his vote over Cook. I believe he advised then that David shouldn’t go the pop route ‘coz he will “die a thousand deaths”. He even placed his hands on his face when he said it. I wonder how he will re-invent David if they do get to collaborate. Hmmm.
vermeer#115, I’m so glad you mentioned Sara Bareilles. I didn’t know about her till David mentioned her early on as one of the artists who he looks up to. Now I see her influence in his acoustic keyboard performances. Absolutely beautiful. Her live performance of City is power music to me as well, just like Gravity:
The YT vid info read: Los Angeles based artist for Epic Records, Sara Bareilles, performing live at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica, CA. 12/04.
The bar was completely packed, hundreds of people. Nobody made a sound as Sara performed her encore. She has an amazing ability to silence a room with her incredible talent.
Gravity. Just the sound of her emotive voice. Stunning.
And may I add another one. My recent favorite for power music that makes me choke up and stream with tears: Steve Balsamo’s heartrending performance of Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar:
