Dark Chocolate
A Feast For the Soul

Christmas songs are like chocolate mousse, intense and rich. A little bit goes a long way. The tasty morsels in Christmas From the Heart are strong experiences, not music that you play in the background at a party. This is music that demands your whole, undivided attention.
It can be left to others to look at the big picture and to put this album into perspective in terms of David’s career. I’ve chosen to take the small view and to look at only two songs – those two songs that I was most excited to hear.
O HOLY NIGHT
Many of us have strong memories of O Holy Night from the Los Angeles Tree Lighting ceremony last December. This was the first time for many of us when that song came alive; it was the first time that those words and melodies seared our souls. Remember the chills at “Fall on your knees” (1:38)? Remember those extra few notes and the added passion on the word “night” (4:42)? Remember that high note on “Noel” – pure and clear and glorious (4:55)?
Burdened or blessed by those intense memories, any subsequent version is bound to be compared and contrasted. The Christmas album version, unfortunately, seems a bit overblown, and oddly, a bit flat. In Los Angeles there was a rawness, a passion and immediacy to David’s singing that isn’t quite there in the recorded version. This of course may simply be the difference between a live performance and a recording. The audience connection, that energy David seems to thrive on, is missing in the studio. But the main complaint is the overblown arrangement. This should be the mantra for anyone working with David: less is more, less is more, less is more. Come on guys, tone down the surging strings – this Voice doesn’t need it. Just let him sing with as little accompaniment as possible. The perfect example of this aesthetic is his recent masterpiece, Contigo en la Distancia. An elegant but understated guitar accompaniment left David room to fill the entire emotional space of the song with just his voice.

AVE MARIA
What can I say about Ave Maria? After I listened to it the first time I was completely spent, slayed, emotionally undone. Listening to that song took everything out of me. David took me up to the clouds and we floated together in pure bliss. And the children’s voices only added to the heavenly experience.
David apparently spent five hours recording Ave Maria. As he said in a recent article, it is not an easy song to sing. Those interval leaps and high notes would be challenging to any highly trained singer. David somehow manages to enter this classical music world with confidence and clarity of purpose. This song is far removed from the pop genre that has been his bread and butter for the past year, but he conquers all. His voice is pure and unearthly in its power and beauty. He opens up with full warmth on the high notes. His low notes caress and comfort. When he repeatedly sings the words “Sancta Maria” he conjures up all the motherly love from the universe, and surrounds you with the peace of residing within that love. And then there is the surprise of a little pop-style melisma, elegant and subtle. There’s a catch in his voice just before the second “Amen.” This is the David we know and love from Contigo, with just a dash of the pop David, combining to create something of exquisite and intimate beauty.

Thanks to Jennifer Barry for the photos & photo etchings. <3
When it’s all said and done, at the end of repeated listens of the cd, I got stuck on MOC. It’s such a feel good song. Somehow, it reminds me of Donny’s Hathaway’s “This Christmas”. IDK, I.LOVE.IT!
Hi, Liz!
I especially agree with this: “The tasty morsels in Christmas From the Heart are strong experiences, not music that you play in the background at a party. This is music that demands your whole, undivided attention.”
David didn’t go for any of the novelty songs and opted for a more reflective, spiritual Xmas album. I can’t imagine opening presents with the family while David belts out “Wooooonders of his love!!” without spazzing and flipping out, or hearing “Silent Night” without wanting everyone to shut up so I can hear every David vocal caress. Oh my goodness!
You’re also right about David taking on classical music – though he still does it his own way. He doesn’t “opera-fy” (is that a word? if not then I don’t care!) his voice and it stays bright and clear. It also gives Ave Maria more of an intimate quality, like you’re listening in on a prayer.
And as for “less is more, less is more, less is more”? Yes, yes, and yes!
GBW #1, “Somehow, it reminds me of Donny’s Hathaway’s “This Christmas”.”
Not that its sounds like Hathaway’s song, it just that “This Christmas” is one of my must hear songs during the Holiday seasons along with the Temptations’ “Silent Night”.
Pardon my little poop on the parade, but just wanted to say…
I was hoping for the Xmas cover to look more mature, and now I see why, as some reviewers can’t help making some silly comment about how young David looks or think he’s too young to take seriously. One even said that David releasing a Xmas album was “unnecessary” and said nothing more. What the heck does that mean lol?!
Not to state the obvious, but why are some people paid to listen to music, when their eyes make them go deaf?
I trust Joe Blow more than any of these blowhards. Can’t wait to hear David on the radio this December.
I give a fat rat’s sass about what the reviewers think about his album. Some people like David, some don’t and they probably never will. Unnecessary? CFTH is at #8 on itunes. A Christmas ablum towards the begining of October at #8? I think alot of people would beg to differ. I love him and after reading all the negative stuff at MJ’s and around, I’m trying to grow thicker skin, down feathers, or just say, “that their opinion are they are entitled to it”. They remind us, they remind us…join us and sing…carols of old…sing the melodies of Christmas.
I just googled the word carol and David’s CFTH was numero uno. That right. Unnecessary? Tell that to google. Nite.
Godd morning everyone!
Well, after a full day (on and off) of listening to CFTH, quite simply, I am in awe (again) of this genius of a young man.
davidfanLIZ…I appreciate your commments and I do agree with them. Although OHN will still give me chills every time anyway, Ave Maria is the “piece de resistance” and leaves me breathless. He caresses ach lyric, breathing life into it…not because he wants to…because he HAS to…he knows no other way. His spirit pierces through his music and has me soaring, not wanting to come back down…
My other favorites, surprisingly to me beacause I didn’t expect it, are Riu Riu Chiu and Pat a pan. His voice sounds simply gorgeous in Spanish and …French! Love it!
And I do feel that although this CD is produced beautifully for the most part, it truly cannot compare to David’s performance of thes songs in a live venue. What a gift he is giving us through these Christmas concerts…much different from the Jingle Ball shows of last year in those cavernous concert venues–with other artists. Now, in 2009, it’s –Just David–be still my soul! Earth-shattering…really!
Last night on the livestream chat, a few questions were raised as to what type of band David would need for this type of show, since he he combining his Christmas music with his pop music. Will it be his usual band for the pop music, with just a guitar and/or piano and synthesizer for the Christmas music? Or some type of local orchestra for back up at the various venues? Is that realistic? How can they rehearse? I say…give me David a capella anytime and he will blow the roof off! I guess we will know soon enough how all of this will play out…it’s challenging.
Anyway…just want to say…Thank you God for the gift of David J. Archuleta…thank you for bringing him into our lifetime. He is a beautiful soul.
It is going to take many, many listens to absorb the glory of this beautiful album.
I am stuck in the vortex of “What Child Is This” when it transitions from the swelling orchestration into David singing so softly, almost as if he’s singing a lullaby to a baby.
I think it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.
GAH!!
Spellbound – I too am wondering how he will perform these songs live. I’m hoping for more stripped down accompaniments, more in the aesthetic of Contigo.
Let’s vote for David as the Next Big Thing in this link:
http://www.singerstowatch.com/main/page_home.html
I agree, Joner, What Child is this is absolutely stunning. I can’t get enough of it!
Very uber-awesome to see CFTH in the Top 10 on iTunes! As goboywonder said, this is in October! It’s currently the top-selling holiday album on iTunes, too. (He’s not on Amazon, because his album has been on pre-order for so long and a lot of people, well, couldn’t wait to order
)
GAH!!!!! David answered my question in his Latinaroom interview!!! (My little Lechuga! LOL)
I know it sounds silly but I feel like he was talking to me!!
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
OK…I’ll be alright in about 24 hours!
Oh! Here’s the interview link:
http://latinaroom.com/news/520/David-Archuleta-I-Love-My-Fans-Interview-Part-2-Of-2
Seriously though, can you believe he actually thought he could have done better on his ALMA performance!!!!
If he raises his bar any higher he’ll be in another universe!
David still has a “cred” problem in the mainstream media. People who write reviews are not objective. They have careers that they are trying to solidify, and drooling over a Xmas CD from an 18 year old boy is a renegade position to take. The bottom line is, David’s voice on this CD is magnificent, and anyone with half a functioning ear drum and even the faintest pulse has to know this.
I guarantee you that as soon as David Archuleta is officially deemed “cool”, these same self serving lugnuts will be tripping over themselves to write how they always knew that David was “the bomb”.
I don’t think there are many “undecided voters” left. David’s legion of fans will never be influenced by reviews, especially these tone deaf, cynical types that have crawled out from under their rocks to misrepresent this current work of art.
Going to Santa Rosa baby!! Next up San Francisco and Anaheim… Sounds like the conductor on Amtrak!!
bliss: I absolutely agree. I also think there are some people who will never get David. He’s too nice, too moral, and doesn’t fit their criteria for an “autotuned, sex-slinging, partying-strung-out pop star”. Too bad for them.
Anyone going to Stroudsburg-I just saw that VIP’s go on sale today @ 4pm Just now found out
I don’t think I’ll do a VIP for the Christmas tour. I’ll likely take my husband and as such, should probably let him get used to the whole Archuleta fanbase with minimal fuss.
Hey Liz!
While I agree that David’s voice is perfection a capella or with a solo instrument, I also completely appreciate the backdrop a beautiful orchestra can give. I was thrilled to hear his voice with the big sound!! And while I agree that not everything is best overblown, with a song as dramatic as O Holy Night, I think the orchestra only adds to the feeling he and is able to invoke.
“Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother.
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!”
Those are big ideas and big words. They can handle a big sound!
One of the reasons What Child is This is my favorite, is that the orchestra brings a completely different vibe and helps transport you to wherever it is that mix of instrumentation and style takes you. It’s glorious and it stands by itself in the parts when David isn’t even singing. Then, we drop right back to David with the solo guitar singing the lullaby. The contrast is a killer and so effective.
But then, I love orchestras. The mix of arrangements on the album is really quite nice. I definitely have my favorites, but I’m glad they don’t all sound alike – all orchestra or all rhythmic piano and sleigh bells.
marlie7 have you taken leave of your senses????
I’m one of the hold outs (with Abrra and Dawn) until I have my CD from Amazon in my hot little hand. This is getting harder by the minute. I know, I know I can download it from i-tunes, but I’m stubborn, want to hear it on my Bose first. This is a totally pointless post–I just wanted to whine, now I feel better!!
Ah LIZ – your article is also like morsels of choco to relish
BLISS – #14 – dang right you are! Oh and your comments at the previous thread — love reading them too over and over again.
Just an update on what’s happening in Manila re CFTH:
Sony BMG pulled through and was able to deliver Wednesday afternoon. The album was supposed to drop Oct 12 but their warehouse got flooded with the recent typhoon, hence the delay).
1st batch of delivery was made in the Makati area — our business district. That’s about 7 stores, at least. And before 5pm, all stocks were sold out. In fact, the stocks of the better known branches — record bars of SM, Landmark, MOA and AstroVision/AstroPlus — wiped out under an hour! When I got my 4 copies, the attendant was still getting them from the box cos the ones in the rack went out in a jiffy
Thursday, deliveries will be done in the Ortigas area. Friday, Quezon City & the rest of the metropolis.
All stores will be re-stocked by Friday.
Now I know we are a small market. But would just like to share the frenzy we are experiencing here. Imagine that multiplying in other areas, in bigger markets! CFTH is hawt, hawt, hawt!!!
It was really funny that Sony was being deluged with calls from fans, from music stores and promo peeps, following-up the deliveries LOL. Did I mention that Christmas is big in our parts? Add DA in the recipe and you have bedlam!
Now, if only David could find time to swing by Asia to personally promote CFTH…
Bliss #14,I guarantee you that as soon as David Archuleta is officially deemed “cool”, these same self serving lugnuts will be tripping over themselves to write how they always knew that David was “the bomb”.
Self-serving Lugnuts = Silly Hobknockers, humph.
PS
Marlie– notice anything new?? THANKS
“Dark Chocolate, Food for the Soul” Thank you David for this gift. Others will not know the joy, the wonder and gratefulness that you incite. That is ok by me. Somebody out there who needed to hear CHRISTMAS FROM THE HEART is feeling what you wanted us to feel and it is making all the difference in the world to that person, one at a time.
Those reviewers may or may not ever understand, but to those who get David and get what he is communicating; it matters naught. I only hope that people Believe in what David is doing and continue to buy his music because only then will we continue to be fed this manna and it really feels like it comes straight from heaven.
It truely fills my soul. Oh for the glorious future still ahead!
dak: You got your avatar! Cool! Love the pic.
My apologies- FOOD for the soul (never); it is a veritable FEAST. Need to get back to that banquet laid out for us by David. What a sweetheart he is.
jackryan4da #22, To borrow a line from “Dirty Dancing”, “nobody puts David in a corner”. This kid gives everything he’s got to everything he does. His commitment to his fans and his music is unequalled in modern memory.
It makes my blood boil to read these moronic, dim witted, dismissive reviews when we all know that David dotted every “i” and crossed every “t” to give us a first rate collection of beautiful Christmas songs. The only thing more beautiful is David himself.
We all deal with this trivializing of David with people in our personal lives too. When I told a friend recently that I hope to go to at least 2 of David’s upcoming concerts, he responded with a quizzical look and asked,”Isn’t one enough?” Have you ever heard anything so rediculous in you life?
I brought my I-pod to work today so that I could share a couple of tracks from David’s Xmas CD with my friend. She really likes David, she’s just not NUTZO like I am about him, but she’s been a wonderful friend listening to me expound on the wonders of David and I’ve kept her very informed about his professional progress.
At any rate, I simply pointed out 3 tracks I wanted her to listen to and left her alone with my I-pod. When I checked back, she still had the buds in her ears, smiled, gave me a thumbs up, then shooshed me away (ya know, don’t bug me…I’m listening).
She returned to my office about a half hour later, eyes red from crying, and thanked me profusely for sharing the CD with her. After listening to the 3 songs I suggested, she HAD to listen to the whole thing. She told me that she had never actually LISTENED to music like that before. She wondered whether it was because she was listening to him singing on an I-pod (is the sound better on an I-pod????)…
Yeah, right.
She’s in denial. I know it, we ALL know it…it’s just a matter of time. Another one is about to bite the dust.
Ho-Ho-Ho
Joner- You move with Ninja stealth (I’ve never been able to get over your avi) AND I like your style!! Ha Ha Ha
Thank God for mp3 players and itty-bitty ear buds with great sound! I listened to CFTH almost non-stop today the entire time I was at work. It was heavenly!
David got lost this morning in Nashville, so I guess he’s driving a rental car?? I was wondering how he was getting around. But of course he would have a rental car. Makes sense. But I can’t picture David driving..isn’t that funny?
Good night, and for David,
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
GIVE US THE WISDOM TO ALWAYS DO RIGHT BY DAVID.
OPEN OUR EYES AND HELP US IN THE WAY WE SUPPORT DAVID SO THAT IT’S ALWAYS IN HIS BEST INTERESTS.
Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey.
Keep David and and his voice healthy and strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, have a good night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always.
Contigo siempre en la distancia, con amor!
SF – always a pleasure to hear your voice.
At the end of a stressful day, I knew just what I needed: Ave Maria with the headphones. Ahhhh….. peace restored. Thank you David.
David isn’t old enough to get his own rental car – either someone got it for him or he’s borrowed someone’s car. Seems funny doesn’t it? Gosh, sometimes I forget how young he really is.
“When I told a friend recently that I hope to go to at least 2 of David’s upcoming concerts, he responded with a quizzical look and asked,”Isn’t one enough?” Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous in you life?”
BLISS – then you should have said that you are even broken-hearted you could only go to two! Take that you “lugnuts” – as GOBOYWONDER calls them LOL!
MARLIE – not old enuff to get a rental car? Isn’t it customary in the US to expect kids to be on their own once they hit 18? And he is a celebrity already. Funny indeed.
I think you have to be 25 to sign a rental car agreement here in the US. Makes it difficult for young people in the workforce who need to travel for business.
On IDF, tibitibis mentioned that CFTH is being promoted on a rap/hip hop website. I checked out the link and it’s none other than Chris Brown’s website! BTW, Chris’ twitter name is mechanicalDummy and from twitter, he lists this site as his web address. I bet Jive believes this will help Chris’ image.
http://www.mechanicaldummy.com/exclusiives/229-david-archuleta-to-head-christmas-tour.html#comments
Joner #29, I LOVE your story!! Love to hear about new fan “conversions.” I’m curious: what were the 3 songs you had her listen to??
JR and Marlie7, people under 25 can rent a car with some rental places, but it costs extra. Not sure if the age minimum goes as low as 18, though…
Have people seen this poll about David’s and Bob Dylan’s Christmas albums?
http://www.examiner.com/x-13143-West-Palm-Beach-Television-Examiner~y2009m10d14-David-Archuleta-vs-Bod-Dylan-Christmas-and-hearts-in-two-new-albums-Poll
I saw the results and LOL’d. I dare say that the results are a bit skewed in favor of the internet savvy lol.
liz…. My favorite is dark chocolate…the darker the better. Christmas from the Heart is the darkest chocolate I’ve ever tasted. I love the first half…but I’m absolutely head over heels over the second half.
Melodies of Christmas needs radio play!
CFTH on a Chris Brown site? I’m not a CB fan but from the looks of this interesting comment it may be good for David…
written by archuleta has some serious pipes, October 14, 2009
i’m telling you – this archuleta dude can blow… i don’t usually care for christmas songs or albums, but i heard this one streaming on aol radio, and was blown away by this dude’s voice. dude has some serious pipes, and from what i gather, can sing anything… he’s got some soul flavor in his voice i especially like, so ima be keeping an eye and ear on this dude.
I’ve been savoring the rich, creamy sweetness of CFTH & I don’t think I need to worry about OD-ing on this chocolate feast. davidfanLIZ – you’re write up on Ave Maria made me want to cry almost as much as the song did.
My sister has been kind of turned off on David because of my incessant ODD. I take full blame, but I have been trying to gently re-introduce her to David’s music. I had her listen to Ave Maria and the only thing she said was “he didn’t make me cry”. Dejectedly, I said “okay, I guess I won’t get you a ticket to his Xmas concert.” Quickly, she replied “Oh No, that’s ok, I know how much you like him, so I’ll go with you.”
Now, isn’t that sweet how she’s thinking of me?
dakgal . October 14, 2009 at 5:59 pm .
dak!!!!! I am so proud of you! Now the trick will be when you decide to change that picture
Abrra
Regarding the topic of David not being able to rent a car without either a: Being 25 years old or b: paying additional money…
Doesn’t it seem ridiculous that he’s old enough to put his life on the line to defend this country but can’t rent a freaking car hassle-free?
*settling ruffled feathers*
OK, sorry for the outburst…carry on.
PEACE
David tweeted: Why am I so good at getting lost? I guess it makes for better adventures. 23 hours ago
I don’t get the connection to a rental car.
David could have just as easily been walking around a block in Nashville or wandering in a building…rather than actually driving.
Gotta love his outlook on things, though!
bluebarsa: I think we assumed he’d be driving. Nashville is a small city, but big enough to need to drive from place to place. I suppose he could have been looking for a bus stop, but…..
bluebarsa – We don’t know exactly what his situation was, we were just assuming he “may” have been driving a rental car which is how the topic came up.
And you’re right, he could have just gotten lost walking which would actually be better because the other scenario meant he was tweeting without his hands on the wheel! LOL
Joner: “the other scenario meant he was tweeting without his hands on the wheel!”
Joner and Marlie. I didn’t expect any quick replies from my comment #45. I thought I was being a tad snotty. Anyhow… you’re right. We don’t know the situation. There is any number of scenarios. Heck, David could have been in a hotel lobby and forgot his room #. Or perhaps staying at a friend’s house and couldn’t find his way to the bathroom! (I’m kidding about that one). But, we all know how randomly he tweets and seems to find amusement in the mundane. But, most of all he wants to share with us. It’s all in fun. That’s one of the many thrills of being an “Archie.”
So now, back to more serious business: Listening to “Christmas from the Heart!” I’m enchanted by his “Silent Night.” Yesterday, after hearing that song, I sat with a book of Christmas carols… and a church hymnal in my lap – following along. I was hearing and feeling the words as David was singing them, but for some reason, I just had to see those notes too! I hope David ends his shows with this one song.
Hmmmm, it’s snowing here. I was bantering with my friend and said, “See, David releases a Christmas CD and even arranges to supply the snowflakes.” Too weird.
David’s latest tweet…
DavidArchie Leaves all over the car. Welcome to fall.
Looks like he’s driving.
David is the most “un-celebrity” celebrity since JFK, Jr.. That’s because he does not see himself in those terms, and the notion of seeking or being entitled to deferential treatment never enters his mind. He just goes about his business, and if someone recognizes him who he doesn’t know, he’s still amazed.
I remember, many years ago, being on a NYC subway during the morning rush hour on a packed (what else?) train. I looked up and standing 6 inches from me, reading a newspaper was JFK, Jr. I looked around and no one looked as if they recognized him among the other passengers. Living in NYC, one bumps into “famous” people all the time. This time, however, I was close enough to identify the brand of mouthwash he used.(Scope, btw). JfK, Jr. just blended seamlessly into the crowd, and since there was no celebrity “vibe” in the air, no one took notice (except me). He got off at his stop and life went on.
David is the same kind of celebrity. When he says, “it’s just me”, he means it, acts it, and breathes it. That’s why he can take a walk, hop a bus, or go to a concert without an entourage or, heaven forbid, a posse, protecting him.
Let’s see how long he can do this, and for Pete’s sake, David, try not to smile too much when you’re out in public. It’ll blow your cover in a split second.
I think the key to David’s ability to remain stealth is that he keeps moving and walks very fast. By the time people figure out who he is, their opportunity to engage with him is gone.
He’s a smart little ninja!
my google alert just sent me the news that David’s parents are divorcing.(source Zap2it) was it mentioned here and I missed it? my sympathies to all concerned.
Marlie #50: I love that!! David’s Christmas CD brings snow!! Aaawwwwww!
River: You are the first to post it here. i just read that myself. A tough situation for any family.
River #54,
Oh my!
I wouldn’t wish divorce on my worst enemy…truly sucks.
Good morning everyone. Just take the new “news about the divorce” as even a bad publicity is still a publicity. Not a good way to start my breakfast but the one below is good enough to salvage my morning. By the way, love my dark chocolate . Have people taste it with a bit of chilli. Chilli flavoured dark chocolate. Yummmmmm . Now I am listening to MY FIRST NOEL…love the humming at the ending.
This is the PUBLICITY we want for our David, an excellent review of his Christmas album. Sorry admin, wanted to put excerpts but all are good. you can edit if you want.
David Archuleta – Christmas From the Heart
David Archuleta Is a Christmas Music Natural by By Bill Lamb, About.com
http://top40.about.com/od/holidaymusic/fr/…huletachristmas. htm
Christmas From the Heart is the second studio album from David Archuleta, and, although it is a holiday collection, it is quite possibly a stronger album achievement than his last. His voice is perfectly suited for this type of material. David Archuleta’s voice is full and tremendously appealing to a wide range of listeners. He can stand up easily to big productions, but he avoids over singing and ever sounding bombastic. Christmas From the Heart is a holiday album you will happily return to in years to come.
Mostly Traditional Arrangements
Most arrangements here are in the traditional vein for such favorite Christmas songs as “Joy to the World,” “The First Noel,” and “O Holy Night.” On most tracks he is backed by simple strings and piano. Multiple songs swell with appropriate crescendos, but the music always returns to a focus on David Archuleta’s solid, clear pipes. A duet with the Oprah discovered young singer Charice on “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” maintains the song’s natural balance between melancholic sadness and hope for the future.
A Few Christmas Surprises
The second half of Christmas From the Heart is significantly more interesting in arrangement and song choice than the first. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is given a slightly jazzy treatment that changes the feel of the album just when needed. The French carol “Pat-a-Pan” evolves from tradition into a new age edged pop arrangement. “What Child Is This” utilizes flamenco style guitar and an almost cinematic sweep of strings. David Archuleta’s Latin roots are acknowledged on the Spanish carol “Riu Riu Chiu.”

David Archuleta’s Solid, Beautiful Voice at Christmas
There are no real missteps here. Christmas From the Heart is simply a solid, pleasing holiday album that will be welcome throughout the season and in years to come. If there is a lesson to learn for David Archuleta, it may be simply that his voice sounds best in the context of simple, uncomplicated accompaniment. Auto-tune and drum machine effects are not needed and likely even detract from a voice like Archuleta’s. He is a very talented traditional singer in the best sense of the term.
angelofdja- you’re so right. went thru it many many years ago and it never ends (unless you don’t have kids.) there is no good time to do it. David is fortunate in that he’s got a separate life . .
I received my CFTH cd’s today and joyous sound fills the house.
I downloaded from itunes and waited until the next day to listen at work. Yes, call me crazy, but I was SO TIRED from the long hours I’ve been working! Anyway, it was so worth the extra few hours. The next morning that first song totally undid me. I could not stop my jaw from dropping, my hands from raising up towards the sky (or the ceiling, lol) out of sheer bliss, and truly nearly fell out of my chair all in one fell swoop. Joy to the World blew me away, REALLY REEEEEAAAALLLLYYYYYY blew me away. I had to stop listening part way thru because the tears were welling up and I can’t be at work at 6 a.m. with makeup running down my face. Now, mind you, everybody knows I am a David Archuleta diehard and would have understood, but still…..anyway, when I got my self under control, I continued and kept that song on repeat until I was ready to move on to the rest of the album. What a joy his singing continues to be for me (for all of us)….I really cannot express adequately what that voice does to me. I don’t think it’s necessary here, because we allllllll feel the same exact way. Oh….that cover…when I first saw it, I groaned. I WANT a mature David there, not the cutsie smiling almost silly look. C’mon….I had him pictured leaning against something, like an old antique-looking building or a barn or something, lol….and outdoor setting surrounded by a few friends. Well, anyway, I don’t care for the cover, but the picture inside is better! I can’t wait to see him on his Christmas tour. This time, I will get the VIP package…afterall, the concert I’m planning to go to is 4 days before my 50th birthday (good grief, I HATE that number), and there is nothing more that I would love to have is a VIP package to see David and finally meet him.
Today I played CFTH in my classroom. Try to imagine children break dancing to Pat-a-pan, they couldn’t keep still. Jive, it’s needs to be on the radio ASAP!
Divoice–UGH, no one involved comes out unscathed, especially the children, even adult children.
Divoice = Divorce = still UGH!
part 1 of nice interview done yesterday in Nashville.

Hello everyone!
Have you seen Jive’s thank you twit to Archies for making CFTH a trending topic?
http://archuletaphilippines.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/screen-shot-2009-10-14-at-124854-am.png
You were on step ahead of me River regarding the Idol chatter interview. Will just post some excerpts
1. There are a lot of strings on the tracks he arranged, because you used the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Will you take a string section out on your upcoming Christmas tour? ( which concert/s?)
It’s hard, with money and stuff, because it can get pretty expensive when you add more and more to it. It can affect other things on the tour, even just normal things. You have to be careful with the budget. But I think there are some dates where there will be an orchestra or strings, just to add to the performance.
I really feel like real instruments and the live feeling add so much to the music, and to those arrangements, especially. It gives something extra to the people who come out to the shows. While it won’t be the whole tour, I think at least sometimes there will be some live strings there for the performances.
2. Why did you pick Riu Riu Chiu? ( he did make this is own now)
Well, Riu Riu Chiu is in Spanish. I’m not going to do, like, Mi Burrito Sabanero, you know, or any of those kinds of songs, but I wanted to do something in Spanish. I wanted to do songs that people weren’t really familiar with and weren’t used to hearing. Riu Riu Chiu was in Spanish, so it was a way to give to the Latin side of me and the Latin audience. It was mainly to have a Spanish flair added to the album and to have something unique to add to the album, like Pat-A-Pan was.
We listened to a bunch of different versions and arrangements, just to see what people did to make them interesting. There were some that were really interesting, or really simple, like little kids singing them, or a guy on a guitar. It was like, ‘Okay, let’s see how I can make it my own version.’
3.You had a pronunciation assistant credited on your French song, Pat-A-Pan. Was she in the studio with you? ( His preparation for Pat-A-Pan)
No. We were just like, ‘These are French lyrics. I don’t speak them, and I don’t think I’m saying them right.’ My keyboardist’s friend spoke French, so the night before, we just called her and said, ‘Hey! Can you help me with these words?’ She just went over them on the phone with me, and I was, like, ‘Thank you, because I’m going to have to record them in the morning.’
It was pretty funny. It was someone I had known already, but I guess they were my coach for the day.
Late to the CFTH party, unforseen circumstances kept me away…and may I just say, he totally blows me away. By what he does, what he doesn’t do, I really do love every song! Some more than others, of course, but when I listen to it I find myself repeating, “oh David. oh David.” At this point, impossible for me to pick a favorite.
Not had a chance to listen on home stereo yet, but on my crappy little computer speakers love putting the equalizer on acoustic; and call me wacked, but in my car stereo, putting the equalizer on “”talk” is the perfect balance of vocal and instruments, for me! Am just absolutely loving this CD!!
Seems like he is loving his time spent in Nashville and is working with some incredibly talented people.
GOBOYWONDER – I dance to Pat-A-Pan too! Sometimes it is scary cos my car keeps swerving left and right w/o me knowing it. I haven’t been apprehended, YET, thank goodness! LOL
My heart goes out to David & his siblings. And that’s all I have to say about that.
JR, “Sometimes it is scary cos my car keeps swerving left and right w/o me knowing it.”
I know, that is really a groovin’ song. Actually there are a few that get this old girl to shoulder shimmying (tm David or at least trying) and snapping my fingers–HYAMLC, IBHFC, PAP, RCR, and MOC. Oh yeah, that’s what I’m talking about.
Ps: How are things going there in the aftermath of the Ondoy?
Would it be too weird if I say that a favorite of mine in CFTH is David’s set of hummings? DAYUM!
Or am I being sacrilege here given that these are mostly traditional holiday carols? Do I need intervention?
This album is driving me nuts! Help!
Some very touching CFTH reviews @ amazon:
A new Holiday classic!
by Scott
“I just purchased and listened to Christmas from the Heart by David Archuleta and I am overwhelmed with the emotion I feel. David brings out the true meaning of these classic Christmas Carols and makes you feel every note of every song. I had tears in my eyes listening. This is sure to be a classic Christmas album and a standard in my house for sure! From Joy to the world to I’ll be home for Christmas to Pat-a-Pan and the spanish Riu Riu Chiu to the beautiful Ave Maria and to the Original New classic Melodies of Christmas penned by David every single song on this album is pure joy to listen to. this is the perfect Christmas Eve album to share with family and friends, but do your self a favor and take time to just sit and listen alone with not TV ,no computer no distractons just you and David and the miracle of Christmas!”
From His Heart to Ours
By Susan
“Accomplished and Ambitious? You betcha! Songs in English, Latin, Spanish and French, no less. Fearless in depth and breadth of choices. Orchestras, choirs, slow rhythms, fast tempos and in-between. At the core of every song, arising with rich, gorgeous clarity and crisp, sharp definition out of the surrounding music is David Archuleta’s velvety, smoky tenor.
Every song speaks volumes. My top songs (and they change priority every time I listen):
What Child Is This – Pure genius. Genuine, flowing seemingly from the center of Mr. Archuleta’s heart and faith. “This, this, is Christ the King…Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.” Vulnerable. Authentic. Tender. STUNNING. And then there are the vocals, the voice, the talent — but those are secondary to the purity and beauty of the message he delivers.
Ave Maria – This prayer on the album is a rare and unexpected gift. The Infinite. God. Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God. Life. Love. To be among Angels. His vocalization of “Amen” is a tsunami of faith. A performance that levels mountains, makes angels faint and demons weep.
O Holy Night – Soaring into the heavens and beyond. Massive love. The Universal One. That last verse is simply gorgeous: “Noel, Noel…O night, O night divine. Noel, Noel, O night, O night divine.”
And, then, there is Pat-A-Pan. Mysterious. Edgy. A march. “Tu-re-lu-re-lu, pat-a-pat-a-pan.” David’s voice giving us the sound of the drum, pat-a-pan, and the fife (small flute), tu-re-lu-re-lu, that the shepherds played to celebrate the birth of Jesus. I suspect reams will be written about this song, especially the last sixty seconds.
The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel flashes through my mind when I hear the magnificent vocals and melodic interpretations with this collection of songs. From agnostic to devout, no matter our personal beliefs, it is a conduit for us if we so desire, to touch the finger of The Divine.”
David hits it out of the park!
By Maria R. Stanley
“This is an awesome album– traditional yet contemporary and with the David Archuleta spin that we came to know and love so well from his days on “American Idol.” It is awe-inspiring, bringing up emotions that you had forgotten were buried somewhere. He is amazing, his beautiful voice, beautiful tone and lyric quality, his voice is a gift which he shares with the world. Our gain. This is a keeper.”
Absolutely Incredible!!!!!

“Christmas From the Heart is breathtaking! You can definitely feel David’s heart with each note he sings. The soaring vocals are exhilarating, but it’s in those subtle nuances and quiet notes that will tug at your heart. David caresses each note and takes you on this spiritual journey with him. Even if David has never been your cup of tea, you should definitely give this album a listen. I’ll bet you come away with a new appreciation for David and his music.”
Like nothing I have EVER heard!!!
By Tom
“I am almost afraid to write this review for fear it will sound like the biggest hype of all hypes. But honestly I have never ever heard anything more gorgeous than David’s collection of Christmas songs here. I do not care what religion you are, don’t even think about not buying this album. Seriously, you do not have to be a Christian, to love this music. It is a true masterpiece. And I do not say that lightly. David has managed in the most uncanny way to get inside each and every song and bring out the real Love that underscores them. I have had tears and chills throughout listening to it. His voice is an exquisite instrument and that combined with his ability to give new meaning to these songs, making each one almost like you have never heard it before, is quite an achievement. This is a word of mouth album. As the word spreads, I think it is going to explode onto the charts as one of the greatest Christmas albums of all time. I think most of us love these songs, especially at this time of the year. But this album is something else. It truly took me by surprise. It’s almost like he showed me them as if I had never heard them before. David brings an energy here combined with his immense interpretive powers that transcends religions and genres. This music inspired me to write this review. It inspired me, also, to wish each and every one of you the merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years. Let’s put it this way, I am now centered in the Christmas spirit. And it’s not even Halloween yet. Given what is going on in our country, and all the hatred spewing and terrifying things we read about our economy and global warming and the terrible split between the right and the left, that is saying something. So again, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!!! With heartfelt gratitude to you, David Archuleta.”
THIS DESERVES ONE THOUSAND STARS–BRAVO, DAVID ARCHULETA !!!
By Matthew G. Sherwin
“There’s no doubt in my mind that David Archuleta has lots of professional talent and this album stuns me with its high quality control holiday music; David never misses a beat and that’s wonderful. David really poured his heart and soul into this holiday album and it’s very clear when I listen to this; his ability to sing and express the complete range of human emotions is outstanding. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and I like the artwork as well.
The album starts with “Joy to the World;” David sings this with panache and the arrangement plays with the tempo and the keys to let David put his own stamp on this classic ballad! He also really opens up and sings those lyrics with a voice that sounds like that of a much more seasoned entertainer; his talent is quite natural and he also has the ability to go much, much further in his chosen profession which is truly exciting. “Angels We Have Heard on High” has a lush musical arrangement and David makes this shine with his fantastic singing. “O Come All Ye Faithful” has always been a favorite holiday tune of mine; David Archuleta performs this with panache and he never lets go of a single superfluous note! I love it.
“Silent Night” gets a most sensitive treatment from David who delivers this to perfection–and beyond! “Silent Night” is definitely a highlight of this album; and listen for David to do a superb job on “The First Noel.” “The First Noel” charms me with its natural beauty and David’s voice sounds like a finely tuned instrument as he sings this faultlessly.
Charice Pempengco joins David for “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas;” this was first performed by Judy Garland in “Meet Me in Saint Louis.” David and Charice make this ballad an outstanding highlight of the album. The somewhat jazzy arrangement fits perfectly with their vocals and I really like their rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” It’s heaven.
“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” was my mother’s favorite holiday song; and David does this justice! He sings this passionately and you can tell he really means it from his heart when you hear him on this track. “Pat-A-Pan” is thrown in for a good effect; David performs this very well and it’s a good number. “What Child Is This” is another charmer that David aces as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing–but of course we know that it really wasn’t all that easy. David’s talent carries him through.
“Ave Maria” sounds just perfect; and the album ends so well with David Archuleta performing “Melodies of Christmas.” “Melodies of Christmas” is a strong ending number for the album and it certainly leaves me wanting more!
David Archuleta delivers on this holiday album and I’m fantastically impressed. This is a must-have for David’s fans and it makes a great CD to add to any holiday music collection.”
Masterful, compelling, genuinely emotional, sets a new standard
By Joel B. Levine
“When Crush was released, I wrote a review for this site that spoke of David’s vocal skills that required a slightly deeper listening amidst a teen market pop album. I read the early reviews for Christmas From The Heart and assumed that this new effort, done amidst a heavy tour schedule, would be a next step in his development and a nice example of a talented and seemingly very decent young man singing tradional Holiday music. I was simply unprepared for what I heard. First, the production values , as described in other reviews, are transformative for this ” well known” body of music. Many arrangements and orchestrations give a new feel to the music and a ” lush” and even moving sweep to a host of musical phrases. They are not cloying but in synch with something within David’s voice and capacity to capture the essential feeling within the songs.
I was driving to work and listening on less than perfect car audio. It is really worth the effort to listen with as a good a fidelity as you can find since the sounds of orchestra, chorus, and David’s voice are additive. They create musical spaces that are almost jarring in their ability to make the listener ” feel ” these songs. Whatever the qualities of voice and music that stir emotion, you will very likely find it here. Many of these songs, so well known, come at you with surprise as if you have not heard them before. That is what is so moving as if this is a discovery of a new body of work by a singer becoming a musical artist.
Everyone will have a favorite, whether song or phrase, because we each will bring a different emotional memory or expectation to the music. Although a Christmas album, the sum of the its impact is really non denominational and surprisingly affecting even for skeptical listeners waiting for mawkish and commercial pandering. This is a breakthrough album for it shows what soaring ablility , musical validity and professionalism, and guileless emotion can give us.”
David and The Carpenters
By HardyBoy64 “Hardy”
“When I was a kid, we listened to The Carpenters Christmas CDs every year and I was completely convinced that no one, EVER, would produce a music CD equal to their music. I could listen to Karen’s voice singing Christmas music all year long! I have many fine Christmas CDs, but I always return to the Carpenters. That may soon change.
David Archuleta has produced a Christmas CD that is, if not better, at least in the same league as the Carpenters Christmas music. His voice is mesmorizing and soul-piercing. What an amazing recording this is. I was very pleased with the innovative arrangements and although we’ve heard these songs many, many times sung by many different people, these beautiful arrangements combined with David’s amazing voice create a recording that is rarely equaled. Stunning would be an appropriate description of this CD. Highly recommended!”
The most soothing and calming voice I’ve ever heard
By David Pearl “David”
“You probably wouldn’t think a 30 year old Jewish male could get much out of this CD. Although I am strong to my faith, I was deeply touched and inspired by this Christmas album. To be honest, I can not believe I even feel that way. It is almost like his voice can cast a spell on you in the most soothing wonderful way. Even though I am not part of the Christian faith, I was still able to interpret the message in my own way. David would probably be very surprised to know the diversity of people he effects. I listen to a huge eclectic array of artists and no other has ever had this effect on me. Its really quite astounding.”
VEE/RONALD & others who understand Filipino — my previous comment on the album in the previous thread was also posted at AP but I gave it a title: CFTH – Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop na Christmas CD sa Balat ng Lupa! The not-so-young Pinoy Archies had fun with that! LOL
The very literal translation of that title is: CFTH: The Most Beautiful Animal of a Christmas CD on the Face of the Earth!
Contextually – it is a lame play on the the title of a movie, the former Ms Universe – Gloria Diaz, a Filipina – starred in. See what this CD is doing to me? gaaaaaaaaaah!
Where art thou RASCAL? Need the paddles?
JR, “Do I need intervention?” I think it is Marlie that facilitates the ODD intervention sessions, but I think there is a waiting list.
The album is exquisite. I’m at the point now where I’m able to pull myself away from David’s voice and focus on the music. MAN! Not sure I’ll survive this. That VOICE, the MUSIC. Oh Wheezy I think this is the big one.
JR, hope things are better for all of you! Thanks so much for those reviews! Looove reading them!
…and if your nuts I’m in the padded room next to you! I really am somewhat overwhelmed…the more I listen, the more in awe I am…then I ask myself, am I just biased, or is it as beautiful as I feel it is…I cannot stop listening.
So David Archuleta believes in Christmas.
Its not a shock that he would, at 18, want so much to do a Christmas album. We know him.
Let the haters go my friends. If the entertainment intelligencia had some problems with David, they will hate this. All we can do is hope that they can have a happy Christmas, this year, 2009.
Of course David would want to do this. And work so hard to make it right.
See David, I would bet my last dollar, watched A Charlie Brown Christmas.
And when Charlie Brown brought that sad, unloved Christmas tree to the gang and was laughed at and castigated and left.
And Linus was left to tell what Christmas really is, and everybody takes that tree out to find Charlie Brown.
“Its not a bad tree, it just needs a little love.”
So I listened to this 3 hours ago. Ron came to my apartment and laid down in my bed. And I’m sitting looking at the computer, listening and reading David’s notes.
David has always told us himself. This is me, and I hope and pray that you find that which is the best of you, those best memories and melodies and songs. He said this in the notes, so read it.
And listen with your heart to find it, that Christmas place in you.
David is not a stupid boy, he wanted to plant a seed and let it bloom.
And David will smile with you, I don’t think he can do anything else.
I love The First Noel because it was one of my fav songs to sing as a boy at Christmas. David owned that song. And I thought about Christmas 1970 in Memphis, me 10, with my Papa and Momma, my great-grand parents and my mother sick, another alcohol poisoning suicide failed.
So Ron gets up to leave and I tell him I have been depressed lately.
Mary Travers died, of Peter, Paul, and Mary.
Remembering A’ Soilin that i had also sang that Christmas 1970.
Scotty, David Tweeted about her, he loves her If I Had A Hammer Ron told me.
And my gut told me, of course David would.
scottnsanfran – The First Noel, one of my favs too; you are so right, he owns it!
love this….”David has always told us himself. This is me, and I hope and pray that you find that which is the best of you, those best memories and melodies and songs. “Ps: How are things going there in the aftermath of the Ondoy?”
GOBOYWONDER- thanks for asking. 7.5M families dislocated/homeless; at least 25Bpesos in damages and counting; about 800 pax perished and almost 5K injured. Some areas are expected to be underwater for 2-3 more months.
But we are resilient as a people. We will overcome.
As of this afternoon, another typhoon Typhoon Ramil/Lupit, has entered RP’s area of responsibility. Unless it changes speed and strength, it is being predicted to be worse than Typhoon Peping/Parma. Here we go again…
