A Tale of Two Concerts
Salt Lake City

The moment the plane touched down in Salt Lake City I saw in the background the majestic, snow covered mountains. I was now filled with excitement for the grand occasions to unfold. Friends were making sure that I had arrived safely and that there were people close by to meet with in the morning.
The following afternoon, we entered Abravanel Hall and attended a most enjoyable VIP. We spent time with David at the sound check where he introduced for the first time the amazing songs “Fields of Gold” and “The Riddle”. Both songs were to be kept a surprise for the evening concert. Enormous Christmas balls hung from the rafters of the stage as the colorful spotlights shone out beyond them in all directions. Artistically designed snowy Christmas trees, completed the holiday background. The stage was set.
As the people slowly took to their seats, Benton Paul introduced himself. An accomplished singer with a charming personality, Benton Paul provided us with a set of songs that let us know that the concert tour was going to be a wonderful success.
In the shadows of the dimly lit stage, the band swiftly took their places. The houselights went up and the crowd erupted into cheers as David made his way to his rightful place at center stage. As he began to sing, cheers resonated throughout the hall and everyone rose applauding. The young fellow, a native Utahn, had come home again as an accomplished musician, known worldwide in the hearts of millions as a musical phenomena.
Following his pop selections, including the ever popular Zero Gravity, David left the stage with the band for a quick change. A curtain was raised and the stringed instruments, woodwinds and harp came into view. Once again the stage was set and we were about to hear the celebration of Christmas carols arranged especially for him. David’s drummer and guitarist now came under the leadership of the conductor. The complete transformation was genius and answered all of my questions on how he was going to make the transformation from pop music to classical Christmas music. This was my dream, to see David with orchestra and choir.
One by one, each carol took us to new heights of spirituality. The angelic presence of the children’s choir for Ave Maria, added one more touch of reverence and artistry. The swell of the orchestra accompanied by the passion in David’s voice left us in awe and wonderment. In What Child is This David sang quietly and gently as if he actually was seeing the baby in the manger with mother Mary and the protective shepherds watching from a distance. It was becoming truly a magnificent concert.
We applauded and we rose to our feet as David graciously bowed to the audience, shook hands with the conductor, acknowledged the orchestra and left the stage. Thunderous applause gathered momentum until we were confident that he would return for an encore. Smoke swirled up from the stage floor and surrounded the baby grand piano as David reappeared for O Holy Night. Every emotion on his face slowly seeped into our hearts and souls leaving us spellbound. Following the closing notes of the song, he bowed his head once again but this time for a few moments of personal acknowledgment.
As I walked back to my hotel, I felt an overwhelming feeling of serenity. Did this feeling come from the Salt Lake temple in the background, the waterfalls in the walkways, or maybe it was from simply finding myself in one of David’s favorite places. Whatever the reason, it was so wonderful to be there.
When I returned to my room that evening and without a pause, I turned on my computer and listened to him sing once again, as I tried to become settled with the wonders of his amazing voice.
I was delighted that I had made the decision to stay another day to take in the second concert. We were absolutely blessed to have two concerts back to back. Entering the hall for the second evening, I found my seat once again in row seven. I found myself sitting next to the Richard Parkinson and his wife. It was a fun filled evening talking before the concert about music and spotting the special guests as they took their seats.
I wondered if I would be as excited for the second concert, and being of sound musical mind, I enjoyed the second concert just as much as the first. To be able to hear David’s voice one more time before heading back to the east coast was glorious. One of David’s own favorite carols is Pat a Pan. At the beginning there was a technical glitch that would have seen me panic if I was singing, but David did not falter and kept on singing. Following the ending of the carol, appreciative fans rose to the occasion and applauded his expertise.
Kurt Bestor, who arranged David’s scores, was introduced and accompanied David on the piano once again for Ave Maria. Both Mr. Bestor and the orchestra’s conductor showed on their faces the great admiration they hold for David. The orchestra, choir and David were in perfect balance bringing chills to all who watched and tears to many. Concert number two brought us another chance to listen to David and his mother Lupe sing I’ll be Home For Christmas, which was without a doubt an audience favorite ending with another standing ovation. The opening concerts for David’s Christmas tour were over and I knew that I was going to be a little sad but joyful all at the same time.
Leaving Salt Lake City on the beautiful Thanksgiving morning, I wondered how I was going to be able to relate the tales of David’s first opening concerts. I knew that I wanted the readers to be able to visualize what we saw, understand what we had heard and to be able to feel the overwhelming emotions that we would be left with for a very long time.
The title “Christmas From the Heart” is a title perfectly chosen by an artist of great distinction.

What an amazing description SB. I am so glad you were there and painted such a vivid picture. When will you be at another concert? Hoping for one I’m attending.
bringing this request over from the previous post:
BTW if anyone has a single ticket for St Paul they would like to sell, I’d like to buy it as a gift for my sister. She’s never seen David in live concert. Im in CT but I would send it on to her. Please contact me privately at maricorgi@aol.com. thanks!
SB: “The houselights went up and the crowd erupted into cheers as David made his way to his rightful place at center stage.”
His rightful place – Amen! David is proving not just to us, his devoted fans, but to others who have not yet fallen under his spell, that he is the consummate musician, a young man with a Voice that will take you to Heaven and back again.
This must have been an amazing two days. I suspect the calm will last a while since you were able to get a double dose of David’s genius. Thanks for sharing your SLC experience with us.
SB – thanks so much for this. Your voice and the voices of all those who write for TDC add so much to our experience and enjoyment!
I am waaaay behind in my David news. Have only had time for a brief peek at the Salt Lake videos and haven’t even started on the Bakersfield videos. I’m trying to be like ronaldsf and keep some surprises for tonight!
To all those going to SR and SF – I look forward to saying hi. This is going to be fun!!!
Oh Sandy Beaches, I love your re-cap so much. It let me relive the experience all over again.
The first night was almost too much to bear, and there really were not words to describe the emotion and high that we felt that night. It was magical. David used similar words the next night in vip. He said he was having problems with his voice and then magic happened and it just flowed through him. I feel I know what he meant.
Everyone I met after the concert was experiencing the same emotions and lack of sufficient vocabulary. I heard over and over “there just are no words” to describe what we just heard and felt. We were literally blown away by what had just happened. I am so glad you were here to feel and hear that night . . . and then . . . we got to do it all over again!!! Incredible.
I really don’t think I will ever be quite the same again. His voice soared, filled the venue, filled my heart and soul, gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes. And between songs he was the same sweet, sincere, humble, unassuming, slightly awkward, but oh so charming young man he has always been. The whole audience was enamored. My 26 year old son (who is not a fan) said he got the chills a couple of times when David was singing.
I am so glad I got the chance to meet you, you are simply a lovely person. I wish we had had more time but I feel we are bonded by one of the most incredible experiences of my life. How wonderful that you will be at the first and the last concerts of this tour. I will have to live that last concert through you so be prepared for another re-cap. I hope we will meet again.
Oh, one more thing, after Oh Holy Night, the conductor turned to one of the musicians sitting to his left, and said, WOW!
Dear cb…I was trying to have my emotions in check for the article…but yes as you wrote and it helps to repeat:
“His voice soared, filled the venue, filled my heart and soul, gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes. And between songs he was the same sweet, sincere, humble, unassuming, slightly awkward, but oh so charming young man he has always been. The whole audience was enamored.”
I am still in an Archudaze amd probably needed a few friends to help capture the moments on paper.
This I did not hear before but am excited to hear now, “… after Oh Holy Night, the conductor turned to one of the musicians sitting to his left, and said, WOW!”
He has been one of the best kept secrets in the world of music, but now not so secret and remember, he is interested in going to Japan when he can. I had a wonderful time in Salt Lake City with so many of David’s admirers.
I also feel that I have had one of the most incredible experiences of my lifetime. The final moment of bonding came at the end of “O Holy Night” when peacefully we experienced time standing still just for awhile.
I will see you again and I will call you right after the finale. Thanks for the comments as they add so much to the article.
SB
kaycee #51 from previous article about SLC concert #2…
David truly looked beautiful and sounded amazing–almost other worldly, but there was something more–something that even the highest quality videos weren’t able communicate. There was this incredible emotional energy coming from him that just filled up the hall and just grabbed you and held you until you almost forgot to breathe. It was like he was so in the moment that you were pulled right into the moment with him…and for that moment, everything was perfect and beautiful and wonderful. It almost physically hurt when the moment ended–sort of like that expression on his face when he finishes a song that he is really feeling.
These comments are truly wonderful kaycee. I have mail for you later today.
SB
SB! A big THANK YOU to you for sharing with us your most amazing two days of experiencing David live! Thanksgiving (though I was thankful:)) had gotten in the way of my keeping up with all the exciting concert news and vids, so I am so happy to be home again, and come here and see your article. Will catch up with rest later.
I am now getting ready for my first show tonight, in Santa Rosa!!! Doing VIP with hubby. I can barely contain myself at the anticipation of hearing that transcendent voice filling the theater and going right into our hearts.
Tomorrow night, in SF, I’ll be joining again a bunch of us fans/TDCers, but also two of my best friends, one of which voted for David during AI but did not follow him post AI and the other, a non-fan (a Cook fan!). I can’t wait to find out how The Voice (and the most endearing person himself!) will affect them!
See you all later!
I meant “will catch up with THE rest later.” I did see a video here and there from the past three concerts but not all of them, and have not read all the comments yet.
I can not forget to say to emily_luvs_archie, you made me laugh out loud with the secret compartment in your purse, with the hole and all, black tape!! You are simply the best <3333
vermeer, have a wonderful time at the concert and enjoy seeing your friend’s faces light up when they listen to David sing…Tell us about it, there is always a story to tell…
SB
SandyBeaches:
Thank you for your beautiful recap! Your writing has a poetic quality that I find very captivating.
I think I was just transported to Abravanel Hall where I could see the glistening stage setup and hear the sound of the instruments in warmup. All this from your detailed descriptions and generosity with details.
From your recap and that of cb, I get the feeling that the two SLC shows were more like religious experiences than concerts. It’s evident that you had the time of your life and I know that you will treasure these memories forever.
SB, what a wonderful recap. The whole time I was listening to the cellcast on the first night, I was wishing I had made the trip to Utah for this concert, as I had for his first two at home shows. I chose the Anaheim venue instead…it’s just so much closer.
Even through the cellcast you could feel the energy!
“The title “Christmas From the Heart” is a title perfectly chosen by an artist of great distinction.” A
I’m so glad you had a great time and a memorable one too. I’m having trouble coming down to earth just from viewing the videos. I will be having my first VIP this Wednesday and can’t wait. All of your recaps about these have wet my appetite to experience first hand. I’m also looking forward to meeting djafan and others from TDC.
*AMEN*
Wonderful, detailed recap SB! Oh my you, and everyone was so smart to travel to Utah for these epic shows. We were even blown away listening to the craptistic cell cast and the videos on You tube. I cannot begin to imagine what it would have been like, but your description helps. This statment really took me there. “As I walked back to my hotel, I felt an overwhelming feeling of serenity. Did this feeling come from the Salt Lake temple in the background, the waterfalls in the walkways, or maybe it was from simply finding myself in one of David’s favorite places. Whatever the reason, it was so wonderful to be there.”
( ok too much confession from me, I am moving on)
Wish he could add on a concert in the south…after Christmas? no problem. I mean most people keep their trees up till New Years right? Hey! One year, I got mine up so late, we kept it thought Valentines day.
raelovingangels #13 I agree! I would go to a concert in the South and I don’t care if it’s after Christmas either!!!
Been waiting to hear from you SB. Worth the wait.
Thansk for sharing your SLC experience.
David: WOW indeed!
BAKERSFIELD TOUR PAGE is already up but not yet complete. Aside from RRC, PAP, Ave Maria & FOG from justmellowdee, we have HYAMLC (solo), POTC, The Riddle, PAP & FOG from np1107
http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/2009/10/bakersfield-ca-november-28-2009/
sandybeaches, thx for sharing your Utah experience! now i’m more determined than ever to make it to concert in Utah.
also, i love the moment captured in the picture of david w/his mom. she looks as if she’s trying so hard to hold back the tears, tears of joy and pride.
SB Thank you for a lovely description of this particular journey. A couple of threads back you said “My most anticipated concerts are the ones with the orchestras etc. but I must be here instead for some purpose.” regarding being in SLC. Purpose indeed! The great thing about going to a David Archuleta concert is that there is never a better one than the one you are at.
SB, wonderful recap. I am so happy for you that you were able to see both concerts in David’s home state. How special. Especially his duets with Lupe. I am in tears every time I watch the vid from the first show. No question about where David gets his talent. I loved the statement “Every emotion on his face slowly seeped into our hearts and souls leaving us spellbound.” He truly does. May the joy remain with you.
Bebereader #10…”From your recap and that of cb, I get the feeling that the two SLC shows were more like religious experiences than concerts.”
Bebe, that is a wonderful sentence and so true. The interesting thought is that those of all religions and all faiths had the same experience. After speaking with concert goers I found that there were several religions represented there.
When David has a concert in SLC, yes, that is a good place to be…
SB
SB, A beautiful, inspired, heartfelt, loving recap of your Utah experience. We never know why things turn out the way they do, do we? We just have to be thankful when things turn out well, and you were meant to be in Utah to be witness for us to what will go down as one of the most memorable and best vocal performances of David’s early career history. You can say you were there…The concert that will never & can’t ever be duplicated or surpassed in beauty and the magic of the magnificent David!
Good night, and for David…
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to always do right by David.
Help us support David so that it’s always in his best interest.
A SPECIAL REQUEST LORD…CLOAK DAVID IN YOUR PROTECTIVE ARMS THROUGHOUT HIS WINTER TOUR, KEEPING DAVID AND HIS VOICE HEALTHY AND STRONG as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, have a good & restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always.
SB…
I knew that I wanted the readers to be able to visualize what we saw, understand what we had heard and to be able to feel the overwhelming emotions that we would be left with for a very long time.
I love this statement…isn’t it unreal that these feelings and emotions don’t fade at all but intensify with every concert, with every opportunity we have to see and hear him. You have brought us David from SLC. Like I had told you before I admire the courage you have to follow your feelings, you would have missed these wonderful two days filled the David experience had you not.
BTW…I had the courage to write my first article ever over at The Voice…scary…lol….check it out.
CB…between you and SB I felt the spiritual experience…what a blessing.
Sweetonda…it’s almost Wednesday! So looking forward to meeting you also. What time will you be arriving at the venue?

STA ROSA’s THE RIDDLE
Eerr, don’t forget to breathe guys. Or close your mouth dearies -- tee-hee!
Have your breakfast with this wonderful review from thye PRESS DEMOCRAT:
An Archuleta concert is all about “the voice”
by pinella
Concerts have a certain sameness to them – merchandise table, slightly late start, opening act you wish would hurry up, grand entrance of the main act. You know the routine.
Then comes the star of the show and one of two things occur after the obligatory 90 minute performance – you soon forget the act on the way home or you don’t.
You don’t forget David Archuleta.
Why?
Pretty simple – his voice.
For the rest of the article:
http://idol.blogs.pressdemocrat.com/10612/an-archuleta-concert-is-all-about-the-voice/
That is the kind of review, it is a pleasure to see first thing in the AM….wow. As usual, JR, while we slept, you were busy. Thank you.
A special “thank you” to the FOD organizers of such a fine gathering in SLC.
On the morning between the two concerts, members of the fan site “Fans of David”, hosted a 10 o’clock brunch in a beautiful Temple Square restaurant. People from several fan sites attended and it was an amazing time to meet the people with the screen names that have become a part of our fan readings.
I was greeted at the sign in table with an exclamation that yes, we are all in rather a PTSS…post traumatic stress syndrome…following David’s opening concert and hopefully the fellowship of this gathering will ease the symptoms. There were over 60 people in attendance and a delicious breakfast was served followed by games (David related), an auction and raffles. One of the hosts Richard Parkinson, took his place at the piano and we gathered around for songs complete with stories. The brunch was a big part of the two day celebration of David’s music.
We took the opportunity to tour the Temple Square grounds, but as always when we meet other fans we talk and the hours went by until we were hungry again. On a personal note I met up with gengen (thank you for the wonderful videos) and we went for lunch telling stories that brought us to tears. I occasionally laughed so that others would know that we were actually quite happy.
Once again thank so much FODers and see you again in SLC.
SB
SB, I’ve been eagerly anticipating your recap of the SLC concerts…and you did not disappoint! When I saw you briefly following Tuesday night’s performance, I could tell by your reaction that I was in for a real treat on Wednesday–but I had no idea what an amazing night it would be! What a powerful experience–and you so beautfully captured the emotion and energy of the night! Now if only I could preserve that feeling and bring it out every now and again to remind me how wonderful life really is!
kaycee # 27…”Now if only I could preserve that feeling and bring it out every now and again to remind me how wonderful life really is!”
I sincerely appeciate having met you and your daughter in SLC. I love your amazing thoughts when you write because there is something in your replys that makes me stop to think. Please do not laugh people in the peanut gallery, becuse I do stop and think occasionally!!!
SB
Oh SB, what a beautifully written recap! I am so glad you went – you were brave to go so far alone. The thing is, once we get to the “David concerts” we are never alone.
betsy #29…Knowing that even though I may not see anyone that I had met before, it was not going to matter because everyone is so David friendly!
On the way home I was very tired and of course much alone for the long flights…but I had a big smile on my face only when someone with an ILoveAllAccess bag came onto the plane…funny how that is!!
SB
SB, wonderful writing, felt like I was there soaking it all in with you. Sounds like this trip will be one of those unforgettable ones.
Just had to post last nights HYAMLC. Beautiful. The last minute or so, amazing!
Emmiegirl: Holy Moly! 3:25 – 3:37 THUD
Emmiegirl…OH WOW…Who is this guy? He has something new and special for everyone. His…little more nerve wracking…concerts are over I am guessing, at least for now and he is having a wonderful time…party on David!

I just stopped by to comment on David’s HYAMLC from Santa Rosa but I can see you guys already beat me to it.
“Mr. Suave” was playing around with the ending of that song like it was a shiny new toy!
Move over Micheal Buble, there’s a new crooner in town!
joner…you have it. I have been wondering who he reminds me of but add a little Frank Sinatra. The difference is David’s vocal abilities…
SB
joner: Isn’t he just “Mr. Suave”? I was watching that video thinking how truly versatile he is, how even being an 18-year-old he can add such sophistication to his crooner songs. He feels the mood, lives and breathes the music, and goes where he wants to take us. I watched Zero Gravity, then HYAMLC, and the contrast in styles struck me, each done so perfectly, like that is where he lives – David can conquer any genre.
Hi everyone STA ROSA TOUR PAGE is almost complete – except for TFN (not sure if it is part of the setlist cos he sang both ALTNOY & MY HANDS)
Anw – lots of gorgeous wonderful vids, please go and visit!
http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/2009/10/santa-rosa-ca-november-29-2009/
Emjoy the rest of your Sunday. Me, am off to work!
djafan, we will be at the luncheon at Cheesecake Factory and then to the venue. Are you going to the luncheon? Can’t wait to see everyone!
I’m so living in these videos.
sweetonda…so I will I!
See you there.
HYAMLC is so-o-o-o smooth and sophisticated sounding. He has captured that knowledge of the sublime and has us taste it. Nobody else can do that the way he does. It’s still a mystery to me but oh boy I can certainly live with it.
What a great bunch of fans David has. The very best, dedicated, giving and sharing, and creative anybody could ever hope for. Thank you from this fan. Mil gracias.
Putting this out into the universe – “David please come south and grace us with the sweet sound of your voice.”
“I wondered how I was going to be able to relate the tales of David’s first opening concerts. I knew that I wanted the readers to be able to visualize what we saw, understand what we had heard and to be able to feel the overwhelming emotions that we would be left with for a very long time.”
SB – Wonder no more. You did it. You brought us with you to a very beautiful experience. I’m so glad you were able to have these precious days.
I remember a cold winter night many years ago, standing on the street in the shadow of the Salt Lake Temple. I had been in Utah for a year and was leaving the next day. I looked up into the blackness of the sky and huge snowflakes began to fall and so did my tears. There is a feeling of peace there that I never forgot. I knew that I was not alone.
Thank you for sharing your joy with all of us here.
STA ROSA TOUR PAGE is now complete
http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/2009/10/santa-rosa-ca-november-29-2009/
Enjoy!
I viewed some of the videos from Santa Rosa. He was fantastic, however he looked very tired. I’m surprised no one has mentioned it. I guess it’s because his fatigue has not affected his performances. In fact, he just looks kind of dreamy…Thank God he has a day off tomorrow and I sincerely hope he uses it for complete physical & vocal rest, but that’s just wishful thinking on my part…
Liz, ronald, and everyone else who’s in SF tonight with David, hope you have a great time, but can’t help being concerned for David. He’s young & strong, but he’s not a machine.
Good night, and for David…
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.

Gaaaahhh! Just got his tweet on my phone and I REALLY did not need to hear that from David…
“Bah, my voice is shot. Hoping I’ll get by tonight lol. I’m excited that the fam is here though!” 12 mins ago
Maybe the family will kidnap him after the show & keep him under wraps tomorrow for a good rest.
Very doubtful though.
Sorry..can’t help it…good night.
silverfox…I noticed that he is tired and I imagine that the first three shows in particular were tiring because of so many people involved with him….but he was fantastic!
Angelica, the Salt Lake Temple was impressive as temples and very large churches are. They always catch my eye and my interest. From a very young age on, my church was a strong foundation in my life and they touch ones spirit that is for sure.
SB
JR -- thaaanks again so much for all your hard work on the videos!
joner, marlie, SB, ram -- doesn’t he just kill you? He is such a throwback, yet at the same time so fresh and unique and totally incomparable. I really don’t think there is anyone out there who can touch him when you present the entire package.
The Riddle, love it, but especially love the beginning of this video because of the small talk. He is getting so darn comfortable up there.
I just got in from the Warfield show where I met Ronaldsf, DavidfanLIZ, and Vermeer. It is nice to have faces to go with names. Too bad I couldn’t stay for the after show get-to-gather.
I told my concert buddy as we were walking to the car that I was glad David gets the day off tomorrow because I could tell the difference in his voice and performance (energy level)from the Bakersfield show which was PHENOMENAL. It wasn’t until we were in the car that he read David’s tweet about his voice being shot. But David with a shot voice is still GREAT and I would still take him over ANY other artist out there.
There are two things I came away with from the two shows:
1. I was just in awe that someone could actually sing that good–live.
2. There were ALOT of guys at both shows. All ages.
Both shows seemed a little more than half filled.
At the Bakersfield show I sat in the third row and it was kind of profound to see the various expressions on David’s face as he sang FOG, AM, TFN, SN, & OHN (well all the songs really). So much depth for one so young. I am already looking forward to next years tours.
SAN FRANCISCO TOUR PAGE is up!
Not yet complete but we’re getting there
Check out vids AVE MARIA, POTC, FOG, OHN, THE RIDDLE, ZG and HYAMLC (Lupe’s back!),
http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/2009/10/san-francisco-ca-november-30-2009/
More to come!
A day of rest for David…let it be a great day.
SB
I’m pretty late watching the latest vids of David’s Christmas Tour, due to internet service glitches at home which we finally resolved just yesterday.
SB, thank you for your wonderfully written article on the SLC concerts. It is one of those enviable experiences you read about that makes a David concert in Utah a must-see in someone’s bucket list.
JR, thank you so much for all your hardwork and the sleepless nights just so TDCers and lurkers can get to view the wonderful vids at the different concert venues. I am currently blissfully listening to the mp3′s you have converted from the YT vids of emilyluvsarchie’s ninja recording at the Ann Arbor concert. There are so many vids to catch up on, especially the recent ones from Santa Rosa and San Francisco. Whew!
My latest favorites from David’s recent performances are (in order of preference) : 1. Fields of Gold (Ann Arbor), 2. Prayer of the Children (Bakersfield), 3. To Be With You (Ann Arbor), 4. The Riddle (Ann Arbor), 5. O Holy Night, Silent Night & What Child Is This (SLC 2)
May I just credit NP1107 for having the vids with the best combination of both video and audio quality from the Bakersfield concert. I wish she/he had more vids from this concert. And Genevievewang’s closeup vids at Santa Rosa are just, wow!
Fields of Gold. I may be late at this but allow me as well to shamelessly swoon over David’s Fields of Gold. No wonder it is worthy of an article all by itself. David is stunning in all his performances of this song, with Eva Cassidy’s version as his inspiration. How can you not shed even a single tear listening to him sing this? The stirring instrumental intro with his haunting “hoooohhhh…” is just a few seconds into the song, and yet a chill runs through your body by the sheer beauty of his emotive voice. And the rest of the song renders you vulnerable and weak to a myriad of emotions that go thru various phases of being in the state of love, the kind that starts with infatuation, to profound intimacy and knowledge of one’s life partner, to an unconditional love, then to a love that endures till old age and beyond one’s existence. I had never thought a song from Sting could be a romantic song of the highest order, and it’s real essence was revealed only thru David’s rendition.
The Ann Arbor performance with a backing live orchestra was mind and heart-boggling. Give me violins and the harp anytime, I turn to mush! It was the one that killed me to pieces and convinced me that David is an old soul who has lived a beautiful and fulfilled life before, somewhere in a place absolutely wonderful beyond anything I could ever imagine. He just came back to make us believe it is all possible, and he takes us there whenever he sings. And we who open our hearts to him are lucky enough to experience it if only for the length of a song or of a whole concert. No wonder we keep wanting to listen to him sing because we don’t ever want the euphoria to end.
I let my husband listen to NP1107′s Bakersfield FOG on my laptop. He chides me forever for being a diehard Archie, is puzzled by and yet accepting of my discreet fanaticism. But he is a long-time Sting fan. After listening to David’s FOG, he sheepishly agreed that it was beautiful. Several minutes later, I caught him humming FOG, so I offered to let him listen again, this time to the Ann Arbor performance, because it was the next one on my mp3 player (what great timing!). He remarked that he knew of Sting’s Fields of Gold, and that he had to be reminded of it’s tune. I shared my right earbud with him, and he listened quietly to it till it ended. Then I said, “Grabe, ang ganda di ba?” And he again agreed, “Oo nga, ang ganda ganda.” Translation = Me: It’s incredibly beautiful, isn’t it? Him: Yes, it’s really beautiful.
Prayer of The Children at Bakersfield. I’ve listened to Bestor’s a capella arrangement in a Gregorian chant version which I considered pale in comparison to David’s heart-rending, standing-ovation-worthy a capella performance months ago. But, OMG, NP1107′s vid of this at Bakersfield, with David’s pre-banter about the various charities supported by his fans, left me soulfully pensive. With just a piano backing him up, David gave the song a subtly mature power, slightly different in spirit from his a capella version which projected youthful awareness. The arrangement was more tender, a gentle but powerful nudge to the soul, a reminder that we and our children are more fortunate than those in troubled countries. If only the children who he sings this for could listen to the most amazing young human being speaking in their behalf thru music. I was tearful for the stretch of the song, and found myself in a prayerful stance by the end of it. David admitted he made a mistake in his a capella rendition which I hardly noticed until he mentioned it. In this piano-backed performance, he was flawless and exquisite. He had outdone himself again.
To Be With You at Ann Arbor. David’s solo performance of this song with the Ann Arbor orchestra trumps all his other performances in his duets with Kara and Kendra. Sorry girls, but David’s vocals alone are enough for me. His glory note in “…that waaaaaaaaayyyy!” was not as forceful as in the album or in his previous live performances. It had developed into a more tender and loving high note. Does that reveal something related to his consistent lyric change of “He would have answered…” to “He has answered..” I really do wonder. I also think that he was able to focus on giving it a more romantic feel because he did not accompany himself on the piano, from what I’ve gathered as info that at Ann Arbor he only accompanied himself on the piano in A Thousand Miles.
The Riddle at Ann Arbor. Now this is a song that I’ve never heard before, and it is so refreshing to hear David sing story-telling songs with heart-warming wit and feel-good wisdom. These are the types of songs that fit his personality perfectly. However, I noticed that accompanying himself on the piano makes him a bit distracted from singing it in the best way he can. There are times when he sings a few inches away from the mic because he needs to see his fingers on the piano, then his voice sounds drowned out by the drumbeat. But the times when his voice was clear, I was amazed by how crisply resonant his natural vibrato sounded during the whole song. I also loved his reaction during the pre-banter when someone shouted “You!” as he was talking about what the song was about, “why we are here…” When laughter erupted in the audience, he innocently asked , “what happened?” Then the same thing occurred in Bakersfield, but he just smiled , chuckled and said, “so here we go…” So darn charming.
O Holy Night, Silent Night & What Child Is This at SLC, 2nd Night. I consider these three songs as the most powerful traditional Christmas songs in the album, and David has made them come to even more brilliant life in his live performances, most notably in his homestate city. It must be his connection to family present during the concert and to the roots of his faith which contributed to the undeniable emotional energy that permeated the whole performance. It is clearly his pride and joy to showcase the Utah-based talents who worked with him on the Christmas album. And I applaud them for a job fantastically well done.
These five (with the 3-way tie at #5) performances do not in any way diminish David’s other song renditions. They just stood out to me as performances with a distinct clarity of purpose that was successfully conveyed. At a close sixth, David’s Ave Maria consistently moves me to tears. It is a difficult song to sing, but David delivers it with such passion and outpouring of emotion that you forget he hurried or struggled with some long notes. I loved how he hummed during the choir part at Ann Arbor because there was no children’s choir to back him. You can tell by his humming how immersed he is in song. David enjoying his live performance of his album favorite Pat-A-Pan, his restrained stomping to the beat with some intense belting in Riu Riu Chiu, the touching duet with his mom Lupe in HYAMLC on the first night in SLC, are little highlights in themselves.
I still dearly hope that someone thought of taping the Ann Arbor concert. Otherwise, why would Radio Disney do the tie-up? I’m doubtful if it is only for the song A Merry Christmas To Me, a very Disney-sounding track. The purely audio vids by emilyluvsarchie really tickle the imagination, with the rich sound of the orchestra against David’s magnificent vocals. Although I couldn’t identify the intro to Crush and felt the beginning of the song could have been better arranged, the latter part of the song picked up strength big time. David was equally strong in his vocals, and the orchestral arrangement reminded me of a time years ago when the Boston Symphony orchestra came out with an album called Boston Goes Pop. The orchestra played pop songs with a classical arrangement. They even had a rock album! I believe that given the right arrangement, Zero Gravity and Crush have the potential to sound great with an orchestra.
I also loved the story about how the Ann Arbor conductor was blown away by David’s OHN encore that he was distracted from conducting and felt compelled to watch David briefly. And for a classical conductor to acknowledge that the musical arrangements of David’s CFTH songs are amazing is very noteworthy and speaks well of the album’s superb quality.
I have another dream for David: On his Christmas tour next year, I wish he would perform with the symphonic orchestra of every key city in the US.
And then in Manila (wink). No pre-recorded instrumentals please.
I find this SOOOO amusing: MARK LOWRY – does the name ring any bell? Well, he wrote MARY DID YOU KNOW and here is his latest blog entry:
“I went searching on iTunes to see if anybody new had recorded Mary, Did You Know? Yes, I admit it: I’m just like you. You’d check had you written it. You know you would! I bet Buddy Greene has checked. No. Probably not. Not that he’s more spiritual, just computer illiterate.
While I was checking, I stumbled upon the most beautiful Christmas album I’ve heard in a long, long, long time. Here’s a link on Amazon.com but I downloaded it on iTunes. It’s by that kid who did real good on American Idol. His name is David Archuleta.”
Source: http://marklowry.tumblr.com/post/262572254/christmas-from-the-heart-david-archuleta
ASCPHIL – finally! Divine isn’t it? It’s like I could listen to David forever SIGH. Your hubby will have ODD in no time, you’ll see!
About the mp3s, I actually have been trying to upload the MP4s of the rest of the concert for days now and mediafire is not cooperating!
Hi, JR!
Wow, that is truly remarkable how Mark Lowry stumbled on David’s CFTH and describes it as the most beautiful Christmas album he has heard in a long, long, long time. It sure feels so good to know David is getting well-deserved recognition for a fabulously gorgeous sophomore album.
Is there a Grammy category for best holiday album? David’s CFTH should win it by a comf’table mile.
JR, is there a way to send Mark Lowry a link to the YT vid of David singing his Mary Did You Know? I wonder if he knows about it?
ascphil: Mark Lowry posted that video of David singing Mary Did You know on his blog!
Oooooh ABRRA… Here’s another candidate for an MGR -- David groovin’ to “Lovely day, lovely day…” and the audience laps it up! This happened during his inbetween-song banter
PAP & TFN cr daai08
Crowd: “We saw you in church today!”
”
David: “(LOL) Yeah it was a lovely… Hmmm (sings and does his little dance
Gosh, JR, that was soooo A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!
I had to repeat that banter several times. And every time I let out a hearty laugh! He is so darn —- gaaaaaahhh!!! I could just squeesh him ….!
marlie,
Really? Mark Lowry’s blog looks so simple. Does he allow comments? Where’d you see the YT of David posted in his blog? It would be nice to send him a compliment on his composition and on his glowing acknowlegement of David’s CFTH album.
marlie,
Okay, I found the YT vid when I clicked HOME on his blog page. How silly of me not to think of it.
I’ll stop spamming now. This is what happens when I don’t have wifi for days. Making up for lost time, hehe.
Gotta go to sleep and wake up early for work. Ciao for now!
Just checking in to say hi. I’ve been watching David’s performances and, like everyone, am overwhelmed (but not surprised) at the sheer magnificence of them. The warmth and beauty that pulsates from his perfect face and voice on that stage has never been seen before.
Unlike other artists, who may improve from tour to tour, David improves DURING a tour, so, by the time the tour ends, he has grown in leaps and bounds from the start of the tour. He is already utterly fantastic, but because David’s talent and artistry has no limits, I fully expect to be picking my jaw up from the floor on a daily basis in the coming weeks.
I can only imagine what it’s like to experience all of this live. I will patiently wait my turn, which will come in Montclair and Westbury.
Remember the role that Z100 played in helping make “Crush” a hit? They have CFTH available for streaming now!

Just my humble opinion – so don’t throw tomatoes. BUT, I wish who ever made out Davids concert schedule had to sing some of the very demanding songs that David does, many nights in a row. He sure isn’t getting much vocal rest. I mean four in a row, with interviews too. As much as we love to hear OHN and Ave Maria, they have a lot of demanding power and high notes that I’m sure are taxing on his voice. These two songs being performed, after he has already sung for an hour. I wish he would alternate songs and leave those two out of some shows–he has a lot of beautiful songs to chose from that would be easier on him.
Because his voice does get tired and strained, he can’t perform these songs to his capabilities or makes boo boos in them, he is leaving himself wide open to the critics , who so dearly love to find any little fault they can with David.
I so much dearly love this young man, I don’t want to see him hurt over something that could be rectified. I think there are several more times he has many shows in a row. Egad!!
We all know David likes perfection and doesn’t like it when he can’t deliver the same. (although he is perfect to me all the time)
dakgal…there are several of us who share your same concerns and can only hope for the best for him as the tour continues. Was it ever taken into consideration just how demanding several of these songs are vocally? They just don’t seem to know…
bliss…”The warmth and beauty that pulsates from his perfect face and voice on that stage has never been seen before.” I love that sentence…
SB
ascphil…I seriously believe that one needs to try to be in SLC when David performs. All of his concerts there have been monumental and memorable…
I enjoyed reading your reviews…

dak: “BUT, I wish who ever made out Davids concert schedule had to sing some of the very demanding songs that David does, many nights in a row.”
I’d bet money that the “whoever” is David. I think these songs mean so much to him that he wanted to sing them. Perhaps as the days go by he will alternate, peppering his show with a more balanced set of songs in terms of how hard they are to sing.
I do remember us all saying something similar at the beginning of his winter solo tour. And by the time the tour was over, David barely seemed bothered by the setlist. David will pace himself – he knows the rules for how to treat his voice.
goboywonder #48 – so nice to meet you briefly in SF. Always a pleasure to put screennames to faces.
Also, I’ll have some thoughts about the SR and SF shows up soon.
marlie #67…Thanks for the reminder. Worry sometimes replaces the facts!
SB
SB: I know! We are all a bunch of mother hens sometimes – myself included!
So nice to see David’s CD climbing on I-tunes. It’s currently #21. Too bad he didn’t have a couple more TV performances to promote it.
Dakgal, there’s an old saying “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it”. Yes,it’s a demanding schedule, but David’s playing with the big boys now, and, frankly, I think he’s holding his own quite well, thank you. The music business chews ‘em up and spits them out on a daily basis, and David knows that.
When David sang “You Gotta Be Strong” in that medley on his first tour, he was including himself. Along with being the sweetest person on the planet, he’s also tough as nails. The term “professional” is overused, but David is the best example of it you will ever see. Many of these songs are very demanding. That’s why his performances of them are so magnificent.
Hey, being the best singer in the world is a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it.
joner…I see that my avatar butterfly turns up often and here it is again, but I wish that someone would comment on your statement…Heaven knows you don’t want to hear just how much I would like him to be recognized more simply out of respect for one of the most amazing singers and on and on…!
Well, the TODAY show on the 21st will be a fine start! His performance is the last of the Christmas guests and he is on a very special list. I would like to go to the finale in Westbury on the 20th and go on down the road in the morning for the TODAY show!

(Blither Bomb Warning)
Hi everybody! *waves*
Sandy Beaches, what an absolutely BEAUTIFUL recap of your Salt Lake City Experience. Simply LOVELY. You REALLY DID take us there!
It’s not easy for me to articulate about seeing David (which is why I leave that to others who CAN.) And after Contigo En La Distancia I finally had to come to grips with the fact that there simply ARE NO MORE WORDS I can possibly utter that could add anything to any disucssion about David. I mean, sheesh, I was never even able to pull it together after my first live experience a whole YEAR AGO at the Sacramento Jingle Thingy. (This didn’t stop me, however, from publicly blithering on and on in unspecified ways. lol) If the JINGLE THINGY wiped me out, just try to imagine the state I’m in NOW — after a full David concert at Santa Rosa on Sunday night by a One-Year-Older-And-RADICALLY-More-Seasoned David! And in an intimate venue with full focus on THE PRIZE.
SO, in spite of my loss for words (pshh!)…I just had to pop in here at The David Chronicles for a good old fashioned *Thud!* or two and some nice, mindless, blog-hogging blither after my second David, Live Experience.
David was BRILLIANT at the Wells Fargo Sunday night. And this was SANS a live orchestra. He was positively sublime… AND, PEOPLE, IT’S ONLY GONNA GIT WORSE (er…BETTER) The first half pop song set was fabulous. I’ve never heard/seen a better performance of ALTNOY or Crush, for that matter, and My Hands was FABOO! (DANG I do love My Hands! And he BRUNG IT!) Zero Gravity and Waitinig For Yesterday were SOLID and masterful. NO, make that solid, masterful and SASSY. He seriously has the bull firmly by both horns and is in full command. It is SUCH a THRILL to behold. And OH, the NEW COVERS—Fields of Gold… oh heaven help me! GUH! (Eva MUST be smiling!) Somebody, PLEASE…PINCH ME!! There are NO WORDS. And Prayer of the Children *chillllls!* and The Riddle!! It was just too … too… TOO! (And he LOOKED MAHVELOUS!) (DUH!) AND then of course the indescribably beautiful Christmas repertoire (complete with wardrobe change. Gotta love it. A clever and effective transitional device…not to mention an archu_fashion_show bonus! :p) Hearing David perform these Christmas songs live is… unbelievable. And LORDY, HOW HE’S GROWN *shivers!* It HURTS. It actually HURTS. I am Toast. Crispy. Crumbly. Charred beyond recognition.
*ahem* Dang, I was gonna try to be borderline articulate. *composes self*
I’ve never been able (or motivated!) to choose favorites when it comes to David. From my vantage point there’s just too much to love— why would I or should I narrow things DOWN when I can (and DO) love it all? So I won’t pretend to have a favorite performance in the show. I will, however, say that I was really excited in anticipation of David singing HYSAMLC solo — and boyhowdy, did he evah DELIVAH! (Joner, YEAH! ” ‘Mr. Suave’ was playing around with the ending of that song like it was a shiny new toy!” LOL! That was priceless! You MOZ DEF got THAT right! ) It was like taking a long, luxurious swim in a vat of chcolate mousse with candy cane sprinkles. lol I’ve seen videos of his duet with Lupe and have been brought to both tears and laughter. Those vids are priceless beyond words and I am so happy and GRATEFUL that he and his mama have been able to perform together at some of the shows, and that they’ve been caputured on video — BUT… that solo rendition is…PHEW! *hair falls out*
The reverent carols were, for me, transcendent. How does he do it? Well, actually, we KNOW how he does it. He takes his fierce & formidable skills and intuition and chops and artistry and runs them straight through his mighty heart & soul — and THEN out of his mouth, THAT’S HOW. David’s performances are so unspeakably REAL. I’m not sure I know of any other live performer who can DO that THANG he DOES. I think I was actually getting dizzy (uh, I believe they call that *swooning* … lol) during Ave Maria. Seriously. When listening to the album I am always in danger of being sucked into the Ave Maria Vortex. Can’t even begin tell you how treacherous it was for me to hear him sing it live. (And speaking of treacherous, he was teetering on the precipice for that high note in Ave Maria and he almost FELL OFF! But he recovered! Phew!)
All of his other Christmas songs were equally captivating in their own ways, too. Pat A Pan and Riu Riu Chiu… just WONDERFUL. He brung it, baby. They were stunners! There is something just too cool about how he can really get his guh-roove on while singing traditional Christmas carols (in foreign languages, no less).
The First Noel, Silent Night, O Holy Night…Superb. Spine tingling. Exquisite. He literally crawls INTO those songs and LIVES THEM. Lordy LORDY! Rascal nailed it. For David, these are love songs.
OH…and during the VIP he sang a snippet of Mary Did You Know. It was nothing short of mind blowing to me — absolutely beautiful and haunting. To hear something like that, that he just pulls out of his hat in response to a random, unanticipated fan request — yet delivers so positively exquisitely… just a verse…just pulled out of thin air… and then *poof!* it’s over, and on to the next question—what an unreal experience that was for me as an observer. The What-Just-Happened Factor seems even more enlarged and ramped up in a situation like that. *whimper*
That there exist a number of EXCEPTIONAL vids of the Santa Rosa show to revisit … is just plain I.N.S.A.N.E. (helllllp meee! lol) I can’t fathom how those who are able to attend many, many concerts are able to survive. (HOW DO Y’ALL DO THAT?)
David, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are unbearably bedazzling! What a beautiful and generous gift to us all your Christmas Album and tour is.
OH! Can’t leave THIS out: I WON an autographed teenie tiny teenie-bopper-sized DAVID ARCHULETA tee-shirt at the VIP. *squee!* LOL. (Hm. Maybe I can hang it on my Christmas tree. Yeah. :p)
And ascphil, BEAUTIFUL commentary! (and I loved your “killed me to pieces” lol. I may have to borrow that — jez sayin’) You and SB have articulated in a way I’ll never be able to. I have not yet had the time to truly submerge myself in all of the Christmas Tour vids (and Emily’s Ann Arbor audio-vids! Emily, you RAWK!) By the time I’ve managed to wallow in it all… those already captured, and those to COME… i shall be officially *daid*.
Goboywonder, so glad you survived San Francisco. I haven’t even peeked at the San Francisco vids yet. (*quakes*) I read his tweet about his voice being shot, but he has said this before—he simply amazes me how he can pull it TOGETHER, pull it OUT, and MORE than pull it OFF. “Go Boy Wonder!”
I just know everybody had a blast at the San Fran Show. Tho’ I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, I am supremely happy with the Santa Rosa Experience!
Liz & Vermeer, it was so lovely to see you again! (Liz, can’t wait to read your thoughts!) And Bookaholic, if you’re lurking, a special howdy to you, too! *waves!* (And Bliss, I can’t wait to hear/read YOUR take on the Archuleta Christmas Experience, once you’ve HAD it!)
SF, wherever you are…{{{big hugg}}} Now, try not to worry too much, ok? *wags finger* I agree with Marlie that David knows what he’s doing. (Ok, I know not worrying is not an option for you. So I take it back. Go ahead and worry. lol)
OK, NUFF BLITHER! I b’lieve I’ll jez mosey on over to the Santa Rosa & San Francisco PITS that JackRyan hath prepared (JackRyan you are DA BOMB!) Wish me luck!
(PHEW! Quarterly Blither Quota Fulfilled ~ *check!* lol)
beebee – Bwhahahaha! So nice to see you here lol! No one, NO ONE, can gush like you, muh dear. It was great to see you and Mr. Beebee in Santa Rosa. A night to remember!
OK, here’s a closer and compact version of David lapsing into his song-mode with Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day” during his banter between PAP & TFN in Sta Rosa:
Thanks gengen!
beebee!!!!!!! {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}
I’ve MISSED you and your wonderfully entertaining posts sooooo much! I read all your tweets just to get little delicious morsels of The Beebee’s way with words! Did I say I’ve missed you?
So…did you speak to David in the same way you write?
LOL… SF… I stuttered out a howdy and and thank you (I THINK. David would have to confirm this. lol) and shook his hand and RAN AWAY! MAN, that archu_gaze is LETHAL… makes a stun gun look like a weenie little plastic water pistol. And after I darted away I stood there in the VIP room kinda lost and there were like birdies and stars dancing around mah haid. I don’t think i can evah do that again. WAY too dangerous! (Not to mention embarrassing!)
BeeBee!
Bless your blithering, breathless, BLISSFUL review of David’s Santa Rosa concert! I am exhausted but exhilarated from your generous and gushing recap
Especially loved this: “How does he do it? Well, actually, we KNOW how he does it. He takes his fierce & formidable skills and intuition and chops and artistry and runs them straight through his mighty heart & soul — and THEN out of his mouth, THAT’S HOW.”
Amen Sistah!
And don’t be such a stranger! You’ve been missed.
new post ->>>
Zoe! Thank you! I just had to drop a blither bomb…but when David goes around saying stuff like his voice is shot (yeah, right buddy!)… and then ups and does THIS: (san fran vid)
GUH! I kinda tend to lose my ability to blither. (Which is nice.) We have David to thank for this. lol
ME to a WAITER: Can I have what BEEBEE’s having?
BEEBEE — bahahahahahahaha! am reading your post while our canteen staff asked what I want for lunch. YOU are DA BOMB!
Please repost your recap in the SF tour page, ok?
JR – lol!!!
beebee – I love your joyful, expressive way with words…I could kiss you! You make me smile and giggle and cry and belly laugh!
(and gracias for that SF Ave Maria! I might have missed that.)
beebee…So pleased that you dropped by and brought so much laughter to the place once again…stay awhile.
Thank you to everyone who added commcents and bits of news as we continue on the journey with David and his Christmas melodies!!
