My Magic Moment
Atlantic City VIP
The Diamond Ballroom was flooded with people waiting in line to meet and greet David Archuleta on his last stop on the summer tour. Fortunately the line of 100+ fans moved quickly because David had to greet each of us and be onstage in less than an hour. It didn’t give me much time to gather my thoughts as I stood in line, but still the anticipation was unnerving.
After waiting for what seemed like forever, to finally see THE VOICE up close was exhilarating. We all know that David is a feast for the eyes, but it was very apparent that he’s so much more. Gracious, kind and respectful as he honored each fan who came to greet him and listened intently to what we had to say. Watching him stand patiently for photos with over 100 people, while interacting with us all was sheer bliss.
As some of you know, I had agonized over this day since way before the show was postponed from August until November. Imagining myself talking to David was rather difficult! What would I say? There’s so much to tell him! Should I tell him how passionately his fans love him? Should I tell him how beautiful his voice is? how inspiring he is? how he changes lives every day? Should I share with him the stories I’ve heard about how he has helped people get through personal crises and about the peace he has brought to so many? Do I remind him that he should have no doubts that he is currently serving his mission? How can you put all that into words in one short minute, while looking into those emerald green eyes that speak volumes of integrity and truth?
Well none of that happened. I had no control of what came out of my mouth. With only a minute to speak, this is the conversation that transpired:
David: Hiiiiiiii!
Me: Hi David….. Remember those letters for you to sing the song “One”?
David: Huh?
Me: Do you know the song “One”, by U2? Remember the letters you received from your fans, encouraging you to sing the full song?
David: OH YEAH!!!!
Me: Oh good. I started that campaign and collected the letters that were sent to you.
David: Ohhhh, thank you soooo much!
(At this point they got us in place for the pictures but we continued talking like ventriloquists, while posing for Kristin. I stopped to take a deep breath and he smelled so good, so fresh!)
Me: (through clenched teeth) So….do you think you’ll sing it?
David: I don’t know! (he giggled through his smile for the camera)
But I really like that song!
**Click**
Then “Stan the Man”, my husband spoke to him.
Stan the Man: David, I teach music. I wish I had 100 students like you!!!
David: Awww. (**BIG SMILE**) Thank you!!!!
As we were walking away….
David: Thanks, you guys, for coming!!!!
For me, time literally stood still and it was the energy in the room that brought me back. Oddly, it was “Stan the ODD-less Man” who got the million dollar smile and the handshake from David. But he did not get what I got. He did not feel the magic, or experience the natural high, nor the strong rush of emotion followed by a sense of peace and fulfillment that has not left me yet.
My magic moment, indeed. And I’ll take that any day.
~ Bebereader

Bebe: Your husband is a sweet man and it was a pleasure to meet him (I think I called him Steve in another post, so sorry!). I know how nervous you were for this meeting since we had talked about it for months. You actually had the grace and wits to speak to him about something beyond, yaba yaba yaba. LOL
Aaw, Bebe, I loved your story! You brought tears to my eyes. It is really amazing how David makes us feel, isn’t it? I had all sorts of things planned to say to David and didn’t say any of them either! What came out of my mouth was “I’m SO excited to be here”!!?? And that’s all I said!
Bebereader thank you so much for sharing Your Magic Moment! It truly sounds magical. That had to be one of the best minutes one can have in a lifetime!
Bebereader, your experience inspired me relive my first meeting with David. It was at the CD signing at Virgin Records in Times Square, last Nov 11th.
The joint was rockin’, and the anticipation of David coming down the escalator (you’ve all seen the You Tube video of that) permeated the air. It was, in every sense of the word, an “event”.
When David finally came into view, the room erupted. It made the Beatles at Shea Stadium seem like the NY Public Library. When the line to meet David started to move, and I got closer and closer, I had a flashback. I realized that I had not felt that nervous on a line since I was in the gym at P.S. 105, circa 1955, in the Bronx, awaiting my turn to get a polio shot. When I was “next” to meet David, I was no longer a grown man. I was, in every way, that nervous skinny little kid back in the Bronx.
Of course, once I got face to face with David, all anxiety disappeared, as he greated me with THE warmest smile I ever seen, and thanked me for coming.
When I watched American Idol, I noticed that Ryan Seacrest, David Cook, Natasha Bedingfield, etal, could not keep their hands off of David. Frankly, I’m now surprised that David survives these VIPs in one piece.
I promise to behave myself at Westbury. After all, I used to be a grown man.
Bebereader -- Thanks for sharing those few precious words with us. So glad that you had your moment.
Bebereader,
Thanks for sharing your special moment with David. So happy you were able to experience it!
I can honestly say, I’ve been there! Fort Wayne, IN. American Idols tour…I had SO much to say…I managed to get “your music means so much to me” out of my mouth. He says, “Aw, thanks”. Then me, “could you please sign my Archangels coffee mug?” and with that Archugaze that renders one weak-in-the-knees, he said, “Oh..yeah..sure”.(I managed to stay standing!) A nice David fan took a picture of David and I at that moment and I’ll treasure it always!
(I’ll never forget sensing his aura-of-goodness! It’s kept me grounded to this day!)
Bebereader--You’ve given me courage to face THE VOICE in 3 weeks. I wonder what I’ll have the presence of mind to verbalize. I’ll have my husband with me, also. Your recap is so warm and fuzzy.
Bliss--”I promise to behave myself at Westbury. After all, I used to be a grown man.” ROFL!!
Bebe…that was fun wasn’t it? Now that you are mesmerized, hypnotized and left with so much more, may the aura of the time spent with David last for a very long time…haha.
No Abrra, no translation of my rambling is readily available.
Bliss, Westbury will be memorable…see you there.
SB
Bebereader -- thanks for sharing your wonderful story. It reminds me of how I’m feeling anticipating my first upcoming VIP in Westbury. Whoo hoot!! Think I’ll need to practice YOGA or some MEDITATION before then. Looking forward to meeting all the TDCers there! Looks like they’ll be LOTS of THEM! haha
pabuckie…There will be TDCers there for sure. We will co-ordinate a gettogether when the time draws nearer…
SB
SB- wow it’s going to be a great group of TDC folks at Westbury. count DJxox and me in too. It will be so great to see you all again. Anyone going to Montclair? Foxwoods? If only I could catch a flight to Grand Junction and Beaver Creek’s concerts and get all my “real” family to experience David. Hmmm. I’m going to think on that. A Xmas gift that keeps on giving.
Bebe: Remembering your ” I’m so in the dark about what to say or do” nervousness about meeting David. I’m so happy that you are now feeling that “magic”. He’s something else, isn’t he.
You have now experienced -the eyes- the smile- the scent- the aura of David.
Maybe next time A HUG! You won’t be sorry!
Bebe!
So happy you had your moment of magic with David. You did great and I am proud of your composure under such an awesome event. Don’t worry about not getting the whole enchilada the first time. Or should I say, the whole enchuleta? You will get your million dollar smile next time.
bebe..I was so happy to meet you in AC! How lucky we are to have these memories of the time, however short, we have spent in David’s presence.
So, it seems David is still in LA and will be doing more writing this coming week with his Del Mar opener, Kina Grannis & the co-writer of his “Works For Me”, Daniel Bedingfield who also happens to be Natasha’s brother.
So many good song writers David is collaborating with is so exciting. If I were a song writer, having a voice like David’s sing and bring my songs alive would be a dream come true. I’m sure all these song writers are thinking the same thing.
Good night all, and for David…
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
GIVE US THE WISDOM TO ALWAYS DO RIGHT BY DAVID.
OPEN OUR EYES AND HELP US IN THE WAY WE SUPPORT DAVID SO THAT IT’S ALWAYS IN HIS BEST INTERESTS.
Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey.
Keep David and and his voice healthy and strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, have a good restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always.
Contigo siempre en la distancia!
{{{Twin}}}
I loved every word. Especially the “truth and integrity” part. I was as excited for you to meet him as I was for myself.
Let his aura surround you as long you can.
p.s. You said alot to him! Be proud!
SF -- I totally agree. If I were a songwriter, David would be a dream come true. Thank you Dee for your nightly prayer. May David always be surrounded by love.
bebe….
We’ve talked for so long about this and finally you met him.
I love this statement and I’m sorry to say, well actually not sorry, this “feeling” it doesn’t leave you, it becomes an intoxicating experience that only leaves you wanting more…lol
So we go to as many VIP’s as we possibly can…some lucky to get in quite a few.
bebe..
BTW….love the pictures.
David is an artist for the ages. Contigo is a masterpiece that demands repeating. Please excuse my over-the-top gushing this evening. His voice is molten amber, he connects us with the spiritual and sensual parts of our being, and takes us to a place of beauty and peace. Dang it, I truly love this kid.
For all the NINE freaking months of waking up every single day and thinking: what do I need to do today for the jD/TDC blog and for the David community, and for all the weirdness and snarkiness and splitting off into separate fansites -- dang it, this is what it is all about. This Voice, This Power, This Connection with all things holy. Thank you David, for all the light and beauty you bring into the world.
Hey Bebe…!Just read your “magic moment” story with David at the AC VIP…and I can feel your joy through every word. The anticipation can be overwhelming--what do you say to someone who has, through his exceptional gift of music, changed your life and touched your soul? So happy for you that you felt that wondrous connection! I thought you and your husband did great…not everyone can talk about the Campaign for One or your husband sharing his thoughts as a music teacher. Good for you!Like bliss, I also met David for the first time on Nov. 11…but not at Virgin Records. I was at the Today show barricade party on the plaza at Rockefeller Center. It was Veteran’s Day, school’s were closed and my daughter and I were going in. Unfortunately, she got terribly ill the night before, up all night… she asked me to go anyway and bring her lacrosse stick so David could sign it. So I did…left the house at 5am, got to the plaza and met some realy nice people! I had the time of my life, although I did feel so badly that my daughter could not share the day with me. The crowd went crazy when David appeared on the plaza. It was pretty cold that day, but of course David was all smiles and signed everything he was given. What a huge day for him and I was so glad I was there! And he signed the stick! Approaches me with the stick in my hand…”Hi David!”"Heyyyy!” with a megasmile and then eyeing the stick…”listen…my daughter was so sick today and couldn’t come. We heard that you liked to play lacrosse and she wanted to know if you would sign her stick?”"Oohhh…Surrreee…!” Takes the sharpie and tries to find a spot…cracking up beacuse it’s awkward to sign a stick! While he’s signing…”So David, what position do you like to play?”"Oh anything really…I just play for fun!”So I say something like “Good! It is fun…it’s a great game!”So we said good bye and he hoped my daughter was feeling better soon! GAH!! I was on cloud nine! And …I received a bunch of texts and phone calls about it…”Was that you at Rock Center…?” Sheesh! I didn’t tell anyone I was going…just in case it didn’t work out. But my daughter did finally get to meet David at the Rockford VIP last August….sublime with only 20 people!
And we will be at Westbury too! There are eight people in our group…myself, three friends and our daughters…early Christmas presents for everyone, including two December birthdays. Good times…and please no bad weather! December can be a little dicey…Bebe…thank you again so much for sharing your beautiful experience . Beleive me…you will visit your “happy place” many times to relive the memories!
Apologizing for the above text…my paragraphs did not seperate properly…gggrrr!
Anyway…davidfanLIZ…spot on about Contigo being a masterpiece. Everytime I watch it, it’s like I’m experiencing it for the first time. It just always knocks my socks off. I have sent this YT video to almost everyone I know…hoping they would “get it”. To me, this Contigo is perfect in everyway…the guitar as background, his voice center stage, the suit, (the hair!), the passion…how he starts off on the stool and then jumps off…the music is taking him to a different level. What a moment! Thank you!
Awe Bebe.. So cool! Loved that you had the play by play script for us to read. I don’t know how you remembered the conversation word for word, (unless your husband was taking short-hand in the background). I couldn’t remember what I said to him until about a week later, haha.
Bebereader, I enjoyed reading your “script” as well as all the other recent stories/recaps of fans meeting David (and fans meeting each other). I attended the 1st Idol Tour stop in 2008; all the idols seemed very nervous. David wouldn’t even walk all the way down the catwalk to touch fans hands during “Stand by Me”. Here he is a 1 ½ yrs later hosting meet & greets, captivating fans, and making them nervous.
Misc.--
A few weeks ago, the owner of a limo company tweeted that David would be in DC for one of the follow Christmas specials. To start rumors, fyi:
“Christmas in Washington”
Airs Sunday, December 20 at 8:00 PM ET/PT, 7:00 PM CT on TNT
Show is pretaped. David is off 12/14 & 12/16; he’s on the east coast.
December 3, 2009, the “National Christmas Tree Lighting“, Washington DC
David is off on 12/3.
LIZ: “For all the NINE freaking months of waking up every single day and thinking: what do I need to do today for the jD/TDC blog and for the David community, and for all the weirdness and snarkiness and splitting off into separate fansites — dang it, this is what it is all about. This Voice, This Power, This Connection with all things holy. Thank you David, for all the light and beauty you bring into the world.
And THANK YOU LIZ and all the adms for providing us with this welcoming and diversified forum. Please know your tireless efforts do not go unappreciated.
YJfanofdavid -- thanks for your appreciation, but to be clear, I wasn’t complaining. My thought in writing #19 was more a sense of awe at the depth and staying power of this passion for all of us -- the writers, the admins, the commenters on all the various sites. David provides a moment of pure beauty in an imperfect world.
FYI -- Don’t forget to watch the new fan Tribute created by Abrra on the Short Takes section.

BEBEREADER -- your post made me smile all the way. It helps in preparing fans like me who have not been privileged enough to be that close to David. Like there is ever a way to prepare, right? It was also sweet that your husband was actually with you in meeting him. Did he realize that you were doing a ventriloquist act with The Archuleta? Haha.
Anw, this is just a quick drop by. But can’t go w/o mentioning that:
1. Do you realize that the CRUSH video @ YT has almost 20M views! Yup! Wouldn’t it be nice if it actually does by the 11th?
2. Have you heard CRUSH in SPANISH? Ok, the audio isn’t David but am sure after CELD, we can imagine how this will turn out
Ciao!
dfLIZ #19, fans have all been moved by this almost too good to be true wonderful young man with The Voice. I have always marveled at the inspiration that he can instill in people to do all kind of good things. I bow to blog owners and admins who work tirelessly to keep up with a blog – a place for their fellow fans. And what a commitment!!! So for that, Thank You from me too, along with YJfanofdavid! Yes, David is simply amazing and I am in awe every single day, since Shop Around!
Thank you all for the generous comments!
Marlie #1 “You actually had the grace and wits to speak to him about something beyond, yaba yaba yaba. LOL”
The cha-ruth? I was too chicken for yaba yaba yaba (or is it “cluck cluck cluck”? LOL) Next time I’m going straight for the yabas!
Bliss #4 “Of course, once I got face to face with David, all anxiety disappeared…”
I noticed that, too. He has an aura of calmness about him! What is that all about!? Looking forward to meeting you and other TDCers at Westbury. Seems like we’re going to have quite a crowd!
Angelica #13 Thank you and **thank you**.
Spellbound #30 Loved the story of your first encounter with THE VOICE. That he agreed to sign your daughter’s lacrosse stick and then remembered to say that he hoped she felt better speaks volumes about his generosity of spirit, especially in light of all the festivities going on for him that day.
JesseQ #22 “Loved that you had the play by play script for us to read. I don’t know how you remembered the conversation word for word, (unless your husband was taking short-hand in the background). I couldn’t remember what I said to him until about a week later, haha.”
Haha I’ll tell you my secret. I was able to include ‘the script’ in my article because immediately after my encounter with David, I repeated it word for word to half a dozen TDCers at AC and on the phone to other friends on the way home. Then when I got home, I emailed the ‘script’ to another group of friends. It really helped to verbalize it and then write it; otherwise I don’t think I would have remembered a thing! (
For this recap, I copied and pasted from the emails).
JR #27 “It was also sweet that your husband was actually with you in meeting him. Did he realize that you were doing a ventriloquist act with The Archuleta? Haha.”
My husband has been a fan of David’s since the beginning of AI7. As the show date came near, I gave him every opportunity to bail out and transfer his VIP ticket. But he made it very clear that he wanted to meet David. haha I don’t think he was aware of the ventriloquist act going on! haha
davidfanLiz #19 I just now finished watching the Alma performance on my DVR for the umpteenth time and I check in here and there it is again. I’m with you. It is a vocal masterpiece .. It’s the validation of what we’ve all been possessed with for the last 2 yrs. Thanks for bringing it up again.

Great find!

So… I’m starting to get excited for the winter tour. The latest news is that Mike K. won’t be part of this tour. I’m trying to imagine what the band will look like and how he sing his hits as well as the Christmas songs accompanied by the band (whatever the band mix will be). Hmmm…
Heartbeatlove Radio [the Heartbeat Cafe] is hosting another ”David Archuleta Day” starting this morning at 11 a.m. ET… please tune in and listen! David’s music has been added to their station playlist, so we can request it there anytime…

David Archuleta delivers ‘Christmas from the Heart’
By Lisa Respers France, CNN
November 10, 2009 8:12 a.m. EST
(CNN) — Even though he has only one album under his belt, David Archuleta doesn’t think it is at all too soon to release a collection of Christmas music.
“I feel like you have to take advantage of the opportunities that you are given at the time,” said Archuleta, 18, the runner-up on season seven of “American Idol.”
“I don’t know how long I will be in the position with music that I am. … I just felt like while people are enjoying what I am doing and recognizing the work I am doing, it probably is a good time to do it.”
“Christmas from the Heart” features tunes that are near and dear to the teen, who said he loves the holidays because they allow him to get together with family and friends.
He recently spoke with CNN about his new album, branching out into songwriting and why he enjoys Christmas in Vegas.
CNN: This is only your second studio album, so why Christmas music?
David Archuleta: Christmas music is something I’ve always enjoyed. The holiday season is pretty much a favorite time of the year because of what it’s all about and what it gets people thinking about.
That music, for me, is timeless and something people can always enjoy. I always sing during Christmastime, so why not do a Christmas album? It was a really great project for me to do because it is such a special time and season for me.
CNN: What does Christmas mean to you?
Archuleta: For me, it’s about your memories with your family, that whole holiday season. It’s such a happy and memorable time, so for me, it was all about the memories and remembering. And that’s what I wanted to try and get across with the album.
It’s mostly traditional songs, but there is one original song that I helped to write, called “Melodies of Christmas.” It talks about how the melodies help to bring back the fun memories people have.
CNN: What sets your Christmas album apart from the multitudes that are already out there?
Archuleta: I tried to give the music a reverence. We could have gone more radio friendly because I am in the more pop vein of music, but I wanted to make sure when people listened to it I got them thinking about what the songs were talking about.
Whether it was through the vocals or the arrangement, I wanted people to connect with the songs emotionally.
CNN: Do you have a favorite Christmas song?
Archuleta: I don’t really have a favorite, but I have always loved “O Holy Night.” It’s such a powerful one. There is also one on the album called “Pat-a-Pan” that I really like that’s a more fun one that people aren’t as familiar with. I sing the beginning in French, and I have never sung in French before.
CNN: What are you hoping to get in your stocking this Christmas?
Archuleta: I don’t know. I have never been huge into presents. For me, the holiday has always been about spending time with my friends and family.
That quality time is so important to me, especially now, because I don’t get to do it as much as I used to and I took it for granted so much when I was always around them. Now, it’s such a special time when I am able to hang out with them and be around them.
Last year, we went to Las Vegas together [for Christmas] and we spent time together just watching movies and playing games and stuff. It was really nice.
CNN: Are you working on another album?
Archuleta: I am. It’s been really busy, but it’s been really great because I am happy to be able to do all of this. … Right now, I am writing for the next pop album, and it is so much fun being able to be involved in the writing.
Being able to tell my story, and be more expressive with the music this time, means more of my personality will be in the music, not just the lyrics, but also the melody. People will be able to get where I am coming from with these songs.

ggdoorsfan -- great article! Thanks!
Thank you, Bebereader, for the recap!
When I met David in Detroit, I only remember saying a couple things, like “Hi!”, “Wow, you must be real tired from the tour and after tonight…”, and “I really admire you as a musician and look forward to seeing what will come these next few years.”
His reply? Something like: “That’s if I can go beyond my first album.”
Oh David! He’s always thinking something bad might happen, he might get hit by a car, etc.! Call it worrying, or call it enjoying what you have -- either way, that’s David!
(By the way -- I find that, when David’s not tired, nearly everything he says can appropriately be followed by an exclamation point… or a question mark.
)
Desertrat #23, thank you for those rumors!
Oh my, it would be great to see David doing a Christmas special! I would love for him to sing JTTW, Silent Night, or O Holy Night!

You did great for a first timer! Next time in Westbury maybe things won’t be as rushed. You may get brave enough for a hug!

This response from the CNN interview warmed my heart:
I’m a new fan of David Archuleta. Did not watch him on American Idol.I work in a hospital and one night i heard music coming from one of the rooms. It stopped me in my tracks…..I connected immediately with his voice.Whaaat??Christmas songs already…didn’t matter…he brought a sense of peacefulness to my crazy unit and patients..

That’s music therapy at it’s finest!
David Archuleta — the healer!
Always nice to see some well written reviews especially if they are done by David’s contemporaries. Don’t know if Jillian of TEEN INK is as young as David but she did a beautiful job of describing how she experienced CFTH.

David said…
“Being able to tell my story, and be more expressive with the music this time, means more of my personality will be in the music, not just the lyrics, but also the melody. People will be able to get where I am coming from with these songs”.
This is exactly what we have been waiting for. I think we will be very pleased and pleasantly surprised.
Good night all, and for David…

Contigo siempre en la distancia!
Great recap Bebe! ( PS: Stan the Man you may be Bebe fooled but we know you are secretly going on the fansites at night while your wife sleeps- you closet ODDer you)
So, wow, interviews by CNN! E-mail promotions of David and the tour! cold hearted critics ( Sean Daly) being thawed by David… A world famous, author, following and openly appreciating him, David finally back on the Today show… ( I am still waiting, tap tap tap tap for David Letterman, tonight and Oprah) but Bliss, ou will be happy to know this (non-Jewish) mother is worried a tad less about David these days. ( just to name a few great things going on lately)
angelofdja 40: Thanks for the great comment, That is exactly what will happen if radio plays David at the holidays. I do wish Pat a Pan was one of the songs being pushed however- JMO it is stronger than MOC. If stations don’t play David now when they start rolling out holiday music, with such strong album sales and favorable reviews, I will be so XXXXX ( fill in blank) and will believe some type of bizarre conspiracy theaory against David.
SF: “This is exactly what we have been waiting for. I think we will be very pleased and pleasantly surprised. ”
Yes, yes, yes! I am so hoping for a really good set of songs for David on his next CD. Material makes a huge difference.
David: “Being able to tell my story, and be more expressive with the music this time, means more of my personality will be in the music, not just the lyrics, but also the melody.”
I can’t wait to hear a David melody. His musical taste is so diverse I don’t know what to expect. I’m hoping that he (i.e., Jive) will release a pre-album single early next year & that he’ll get to perform it on Idol. Similar to what they did for Jordin Spark’s “Battlefield” single.
