I attended the Anaheim show and it was spectacular! It was so nice to meet Mike and reconnect with others whom I’ve seen at other Southern California events.
During the concert, David was in great voice and high spirits – much of it fueled by the enthusiastic response from the crowd. There were several times after he completed a song when the ovation from the crowd went on for an extended period of time and he couldn’t move on to the next song because the crowd was still showing the love for the prior song! I am glad he has learned to wait a bit before he moves on. It gives us a chance to show our appreciation – and he seems to be allowing himself to drink it in (JMHO).
A few cute moments: As soon as David started Zero Gravity, he took off like a rocket. The guitarist, Steve, had the biggest smile on his face. David’s energy never let up and the crowd was on their feet. I think that’s what precipitated the triple spin at the end! During the next song, I think David had a tough time finding the one ear monitor that he had taken out since it had wrapped itself around his back and was resting on the other shoulder. Steve reached over at one point to help David.
After the break when David came out in his suit jacket, the back collar wasn’t down. He performed the first song with the collar up. During the break before the next song, Dave stepped behind David and straightened the collar – kinda like a big brother. The band really has David’s back – literally.
In addition to David’s fantastic performance, I gotta say that the band was stellar. The new drummer is great. During the slower songs when no drum was needed, he sat at the drums with head bowed during the entire number. Steve on the guitar is a master. Kendra – wow what a multi-tasker – keyboard, grand piano, violin. Also, sometimes when Kendra was at the grand piano, Dave was at the keyboard – I think coordinating the backing tracks for, for example, the children’s voices during Ave Maria.
The stage was decorated just enough to give a flavor of the holiday. When I realized they need to schlep the ‘trees’ and ‘Christmas Ornaments’ from venue to venue, I thought they did a nice job setting the mood. In addition, there was a lot done with lighting. Not distracting – but in service to setting a mood and enhancing the look and feel.
The show was well constructed and everyone involved contributed to making it very professional and polished. And David commanded that stage like I’ve never seen before. It seemed that the response from the audience egged him on. It was almost as if he was thinking ‘oh, you liked that? – well have a listen to this new run and vocal styling!’
I had the best time. It was a great way to anchor the spirit and joy of the season. Best wishes to those of you who have upcoming concerts.
Gotta-Glow -- what a fabulous recap! I love your notes on the production value cos that helps round up the whole feel of the concert. And the details you shared? Saweeeet
In case you are not aware, the new drummer used to play for Demi Lovato
Thanks once again.
You’re welcome. Since I was at a loss for words about THE VOICE, I figured I’d embellish with some on-site tidbits. It really was a great event! Thanks for posting all of the videos in one place so I can re-live it at will.
Oh, and the drummer also plays during Benton Paul’s set -- the only band member shared by both David and Benton.
