Loving San Francisco
Wish You Were Here!
First, I must apologize that this report was written a bit hastily. Still, I wanted to make sure you heard about my San Francisco experience sooner rather than later. (Also – I have not yet read Liz’s review, just so I could give you yet another fresh impression.)
I had seen none of the Christmas Tour videos, and though I had been at a Meet & Greet during the AI Tour, this was my first VIP experience. I was particularly excited to meet David, and, knowing I would only have a few seconds, couldn’t wait until I asked him whether he had read a certain couple of poems that, you know, a rhyme a lot…
One thing about David is that, when he gets the chance to be comfortable, he resorts to being quite unflappably himself. He stepped out onto the stage to the sound of screams, stepped up to the microphone, and simply said hi. Completely unplanned, unrehearsed, he looked around and waited for random comments from the audience and asked some questions himself. I can see why “Works for Me” could be a theme song for him – he is never that much concerned about trying to “act like a star,” or like anybody else for that matter. He said he was soooo excited to be in San Francisco – one could feel oodles of Archulove toward my (lovely) hometown.
He sang “Touch My Hand,” and then followed up with a beautiful rendition of “White Christmas.” This song already has a beautiful, jazz-tinged melody, and, though he couldn’t remember (most!) of the words, he added different colors to his voice and made some improvisations that were so brilliant that he had us cheering. What a privilege to hear!
Then it was on to the picture taking! I had actually made myself the very first person in line because I had this crazy circumstance in which I had to run to a meeting in the East Bay and return in the middle of the concert. (Don’t ask!
)
Well, I wasn’t exactly nervous walking up to him. My stress and sense of distraction actually had me focused on my singular concrete goal. I was going to ask him one question and see if he recognized Ronaldsf, that fan who has this weird rhyming obsession with David.
So as I’m walking up to David, he’s basically just looking around, smiling, singing very softly “Noel, Noel…”! So awesome that I caught him in a random singing moment! The he-always-sings legend is true! I then popped the question:
Me: “Have you ever heard of these two very long poems about you, that rhymed?”
David: “What?”
Security Guy: “Hurry! There’s a hundred people behind you!”
Camera Girl: “Come together!”
David smiles and sings “Come together!” (from the Beatles song), we turn to the camera.
And *Click*!
“Next!”
So yeah, I’m sorry to report: no Archugaze, no profound moment. More like confusion and a bright light. And he clearly hadn’t read the poems yet. Still, I learned from this bitter lesson that I’ll bring him the darn poems next time so he can see them for himself afterward. And it was also an unforgettable pleasure to have a moment with happy, spacey David.
Assault and battery
After running back from my meeting across the Bay, I walked into the theater while David was singing “Zero Gravity.” Having gotten my VIP ticket through Mikesd, I had to find him and Vermeer so I could sit next to them in the second row.
Well, once I eyed Mike I started to climb towards him. Yes – climbed. I was walking over the chairs because everybody was standing up bopping to David singing “Crush.” I realized I missed Mikesd and Vermeer by one row and had to climb over the chair in front of them to reach them.
In the meantime, this tall man sees me, and I apparently must be standing on his chair. How did I know? While I was gingerly trying to step over the chair to reach Vermeer, he was grabbing me with both hands and pushing me as hard as he could, trying to get me to trip and fall to the ground!
I thought I had met the worst David fans in Rockford, but no! He’s in San Francisco!
Battery (n): an intentional unpermitted act causing harmful or offensive contact with the “person” of another
Grimacing from the offensiveness of this lowly fan, I composed myself to enjoy the show. After all, “WWDD?” I told myself.
And then I beheld “Fields of Gold.” Something I noticed, now that I was up close, was how, while preparing for a slow song and the lights are down, he is closing his eyes, meditating, going to that “special place.” This is his process of transformation when he changes from Everyday David to being at one with the music. David has this way of being on his own wavelength, and it’s not just in music when he does this.
Well, I LOVED “Fields of Gold.” He was faithful to Eva’s interpretation (singing in almost the same high key!), and drew out those notes with all the intimacy and nuances he could bring with his voice. He has this ability to make his voice fragile and tender while at the same time full of power, and you feel it viscerally.
I gasped when David walked out for the second set in his suit, which I now see has been a staple at his Christmas shows. I assume you all have already had your spaz attacks? If I were him, I would wear a suit every day if he looks that good. Doing the laundry, jogging, you name it.
It was wonderful to have Lupe come onstage during “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” She is so proud of her son, and he is so proud of her – their love is palpable, and Lupe has a lovely voice. I loved her teasing way of making him dance with her, and she even asked someone in the audience if they wanted to join him.
It was clear that David was holding back on some of the most challenging notes, given that he was now performing a fourth night in a row. Still, he was able to bring the emotional connection and immediacy to his live performance that made this something quite different from the album. I enjoyed how, at the beginning of “Ave Maria”‘s beginning strains, many in the audience sat down as if in church to hear a hymn.
But not everybody was reverent. During “The First Noel,” for example, while David’s eyes were closed and he was clearly getting into singing about the birth of Christ, people were reaching out with their hands whenever he drew close to them. Um, helloo? He’s trying to picture to himself shepherds and fields, and here are several greedy hands reaching out to him from the black? I don’t think so.
Another (minor) complaint I had was something that probably can’t be solved – the audience cheering and loving his performances. No, no, no – I’m not saying that people should shut up. But so many of his songs were meant to end quietly and leave you with a lasting feeling of peace, but as soon as he started to enter the ending quiet passages, everyone erupted into cheers. I really wanted him to take me to that place, and then cheer afterwards.
Another stand out was “Riu Riu Chiu,” in which David slinked around the stage. I kept wondering what it was he reminded of, and then I realized he made me think of some graceful animal, like a tiger prowling across the savannah. Now, a certain American Idol judge thought David didn’t have tiger in him, but Simon clearly hadn’t seen David sing a Christmas song.
For me, my favorite of the concert was “Silent Night.” I sometimes find it difficult to get into a song at the moment – people may remember me not fully getting into the music until near the end of a recent concert – but with this I felt he brought me there even more than in his other performances. (It doesn’t hurt that it’s one of my very favorite tracks on the album, either.) I loved how he built up from the quiet, tender beginning to the heartfelt, pleading ending. That was the high point of the evening for me, and if I were to guess, for him to.
So that was the concert! And then I assume David spent the next day with family touring my (lovely) hometown of San Francisco. Perhaps here is a good place to post this mega-cute picture I found of David from when he previously visited Fisherman’s Wharf:
Loving San Francisco – Wish You Were Here!
Well, there’s my “quick” report! And I wanted to add finally that it was a real pleasure meeting everyone! I hadn’t seen anyone since last year’s Jingle Thingie in Sacramento, so it had been more than a year. Plus I met a lot of new people as well! I can’t wait to see you all again next time David comes around!
~ Ronaldsf

Well how fitting… I’ll bring this (below) over from the last post. Hi Ronaldsf!!! Loved your (lovely) hometown post. Hmm… wish I could include my pic of the Warfield marquis here. Oh well.
Warfields of Gold
Words.
What are they?
Gone.
Brain too.
Buh-bye!
No… try!
The clouds are pretty.
There’s David’s face!
Oh, now it’s raining…
down my face.
Concert over.
But memories linger
of that precious singer
and walking in
Warfields of gold.
Our very own
fields of gold.
- – -- – -- – -- – -
Thank you, all TDC friends, old and new…. as Mikesd says, “…and you know who you are!” It was dee-viiiiiiiine!
Ronaldsf, What a fun recap!
The Fisherman’s Wharf picture is so fitting. The seals in the background are WHAT WE LOOK LIKE after seeing the tiger prowling across the savannah singing Riu Riu Chiu.
Ronald…you did indeed have a time of your life…All of the pictures of this Christmas tour are beautiful..
Yes, we are the seals as highervibe said. Out cold after a David concert!
Ah ronald, now tell us with just a guess on, ‘how the months of January through to who knows how long’…are going to go?…But really, I must stay in the present, David always has a surprise in store…
SB
It was lovely to see you in SF, Ronald!
I have to echo what you said about two things--the inappropriate fans who were at the front of the stage were really annoying to me although David was very classy in ignoring them. I wish Security had take care of some of them.
And the endings ahhhh. Through the kindness of a friend, I had the privilege of sitting absolutely front and center at Santa Rosa (which was happily devoid of ankle-grabbers). Every time a song ended, I was frozen in a trance and could hardly believe that people had the energy to scream and applaud. The force of the voice was soul-stunning that night.
ronaldsf~ what a sincere article you’ve submitted. I’m so glad that your time with David and ‘The Voice’ was heartwarming and unforgettable (except for the mean man). That you were able to be a part of the brilliance and personal integrity that David brings to each concert is wonderful.
“Another (minor) complaint I had was something that probably can’t be solved – the audience cheering and loving his performances. No, no, no – I’m not saying that people should shut up. But so many of his songs were meant to end quietly and leave you with a lasting feeling of peace, but as soon as he started to enter the ending quiet passages, everyone erupted into cheers. I really wanted him to take me to that place, and then cheer afterwards.” <-- this is exactly how I felt at the SLC concerts. It was as though my chance to be with David 'in his channel' was abruptly interrupted before I was ready for it. I got over it and have forgiven others.
OMGosh! WHERE did you find that amazing pic of David in SF? It's adorable (of course it is--it's David). He still has that wonderful smile of a child that lights up the world and sets other hearts on fire with his eagerness to give of his energy and love. This is the kind of photo that should be put in the bathroom, so that the first thing you see in the morning is a smile that makes you remember that it's your choice whether or not you have a good day. And the last smile that you see at night as the day has ended. I love it! Thanks for posting it.
BTW--I love your photo with David at the VIP
New David blog:

Yay, another report from Ronald!!
Can’t wait to get home to read it, but am just dropping by to pass along this news alert. The following review can be found in the December 14th weekly edition of People Magazine:
David Archuleta, Christmas From the Heart:
“Last year’s American Idol runner-up delivers a winning set of yuletide faves such as “What Child Is This.” It’s all as impossible to resist as those dimples.”
Short but sweet. And 3-1/2 out of 4 stars…WAY TO GO, David!!
BTW, most of the other reviews of holiday albums did not do as well, and NONE did better!
YAY!!! The critics are showing David some love!!
(didn’t mean to hit the send button just now)
Re: his new blog. That little stinker (no not his eye!)… “***OH!***
… no, I’m not going to talk about that right now.”
What, what, what?! He’s such a tease.
Cool to see his view from the bus.
JR -- I know there are a lot of ‘em already, so no need to add it to the tour page, but here’s my vid of “Fields of Gold”, Warfield: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCj4hO4t1rM
sigh.
What the hey, I’ve been gone for a while, I’m entitled to the spam wand, right? lol
Ronald – great review. It was a blast having David in OUR very own city. So sorry about your “altercation” at the theater. You’ve had more than your share of obnoxious fans.
You and I both appear to have been slayed by Fields of Gold. That was a beautiful moment. And the suit -- I truly can’t believe that you were able to keep his tuxedo jacket and purple shirt a surprise. I can well believe that you gasped when you saw it. There is something about the purple and black that makes sets him off beautifully. I brought my grown son with me to the SF show, and even he admitted that David looked great.
I too was discombobulated by the hand grabs during the sacred songs. Sorry people – this is just WRONG haha! Ronald -- describing David as a tiger on the prowl in Riu Riu Chiu is perfect. This is a different stage movement from his full-out pop stomping. It’s slinkier and more graceful, as you said. And Riu Riu Chiu has been one of my favorites from the first. That 16th c. Spanish carol has fabulous rhythmic energy.
Thanks for your review and thanks also for the adorable picture of David in front of the seals. I hope his return visit isn’t so widely spaced lol!
{{ highervibe }}
Apologies to Tawna who had 2 posts stuck in SPAM Purgatory all day while I was in meetings.
Tawna, I can’t see any reason for them to be stuck there -- the only other one was a “10 Ways to get a good night’s sleep” post -- obviously SPAM. I released the one as you asked, and will see if I can figure out the magic combination of words (probably something like OR at the end of one word and AL at the beginning of the next!)
Okay -- mikesd -- what’s the story from Anaheim? Inquiring minds want to know lol!
Yeah, mikesd, inquiring minds do want to know, especially since in his new blog he said he had “sooooo much fun” at that one.
Anaheim… Ah yes, the Anaheim Chili was…HOT! I knew it was going to be a good evening when checking in at the VIP, Kristen said “Hi Michael, I don’t even need your ID, I know who you are” to the somewhat stunned faces around! After the obligatory sandwiches and cookies we were finally led into the venue and were treated to “Mary Did You Know” and …”The Christmas Song” aka Chestnuts! No discussion about what to sing (thank you!) but just went right into it. I think they were running short on time. David delivered in a big way with a version of TCSakaC that only David could deliver. Perfection. On to the photos…Ray asked to keep the talking to a minimum for David’s sake so I obliged and did most of the talking while the Archugaze honed in on me and practically seered through to the back of my skull. It does make it a bit challenging to focus on words while that is happening and he has a grip on your hand but that I did, telling David how his influence has allowed me to spend much more time on my piano and guitar. His response: “That is soo cool!” made me loose track of what else I wanted to say in my seemingly nanosecond. I know I said something about getting sheet music to his CD and I thanked him for all he has done and how honored I was to be able to be there to speak with him in person. Photo snap and off I went.
The show. He was in great voice from start to finish and the audience was the most enthusiastic of the three shows I went to . I discovered that very loud sustained clapping and yelling became infectious and as the people around me joined in with me it seemed to infiltrate the whole room much like a “wave” at a stadium. He was just in such great voice that all of the hoopla was necessary and it seemed to please him no end. My seat was in the fifth row center but elevated about a foot and a half above the first four rows so it was like having a front row seat with a better view. “The better to see you with, my dear”. I really lucked out seating- wise on all three shows. It was fun to meet a few new faces from this blog and others and see the old gang from SanDiego and SoCal in general. If only David could just keep circulating in SoCal for the rest of the tour to avoid that pesky cold weather and snow…(sorry rest of the world) and to give me more shows to go to.
Got a chance to meet Jared Paul, chatted a bit and put in my request to him for sheet music (can you tell I want to learn this stuff??). All of my other thoughts I think I will keep to myself! Just another great chapter in the Archubook of my life right now! Amazing…just amazing.
ronaldsf -- “One thing about David is that, when he gets the chance to be comfortable, he resorts to being quite unflappably himself.” So very, very true. No pretense what so ever.
highervibe -- you are TOO funny “Re: his new blog. That little stinker (no not his eye!)…”
(((Liz)))
mikesd -- I admire your ability to retain coherency when talking to David! re pesky cold weather -- it is minus 14 C here at home (that’s 7 F)
Oops Mike re the crowd at Anaheim -- they must have been really rockin’ since I thought San Fran was a wonderfully noisy crowd.
Ronald: I read your post this morning and then had to zip off to a client site, so it took me all day to be able to comment.
How did you not watch the videos from prior shows? You belong in the club with Abrra and Dawn who steadfastly avoided the Christmas CD until their drive to Providence (or was it Manchester?)
I can see why “Works for Me” could be a theme song for him – he is never that much concerned about trying to “act like a star,” or like anybody else for that matter.
This might be the most charming aspect of David for me. His open and completely unrehearsed chatter and connection with the audience as “just another guy” (heh, who can sing birds down from the trees and break your heart with a single note, then put it back together with the next one).
Someday we will both be at the same concert -- we’ll have that TDC get-together in 2010 (put it out there to the universe and see what happens!)
Liz, I just read your review and wanted to say that I too was pleasantly surprised by the size and makeup of the crowd. People of different backgrounds and ages, a good number of Latino and Filipino fans, gay and straight… David appeals to everybody and that’s part of why I find it so strange that he’s not played here, one of the most diverse areas in the country. Oh well.
Oh, and “velvet brown” voice? YES!
And please update me on your son’s ODD progress! He’s a cool cat and inquiring minds wanna know!
Thank you for sharing your poem, highervibe! And it was great meeting you in S.F.!
SandyBeaches #3, that’s right about not seeing David perform a while! We’re about to enter an Archudrought. I assume he’ll tour again after his next album drops?!
Tawna21 #5, yes that Fisherman’s Wharf pic is now a favorite of mine. I found it simply by doing a Google Images search for “David” and “San Francisco,” and it popped up! I don’t know where else it’s been posted!
Mikesd #16, I’m jealous that you heard him sing The Chestnut Song! As you may remember, that’s what I was yelling out during the VIP for him to sing, along with Imagine!
Awestruck and Marlie: Yeah, I had never seen David with his guard completely down like that, as when he’s doing a VIP. It was refreshing to see him 2-3 times as random and funny as he normally is! I loved his sudden looking around and spacing out, then exclaiming “Wut?” Love it!
Rereading my review, I realized in my haste that I forgot to mention how utterly SUBLIME it was to hear David live. I loved Liz’s analogy in her review of watching something in color instead of in black and white. For me, there’s just an all-enveloping POWER with his voice when you hear him live, and the emotions and sound just wash over you like a flood, and pretty soon you’re drowning.
As you may have guessed, I missed his performance of “The Riddle” because of my crazy schedule. I just watched it on YouTube and I loved it! I haven’t heard him take on this style of music before. Boy can sing anythang!!
Ronald, your concert experience was a hoot to read! Just imagining the look on David’s face when you asked him if he’d read the poems…I’m sure he has no idea to what lengths his ardent fans will go to express their Archulove!
Someday, someway, you simply MUST get those priceless literary gems to him!!
And I so admire your willpower to abstain from watching the earlier concert videos! Wow, if only I could practice that steely determination with my dieting attempts!! Still, I do believe you have now inspired me to do the same. I have decided that from now until David’s concert in Stroudsburg on the 18th, I will not watch any more performances. I will be coming out of my skin with anticipation, but it’s bound to heighten the experience for me.
Besides, I then will have hundreds of performances to watch during the dreaded drought of early 2010.
Loved this: “For me, there’s just an all-enveloping POWER with his voice when you hear him live, and the emotions and sound just wash over you like a flood, and pretty soon you’re drowning.”
Drowning in a sea of exquisite auditory AND visual pleasure!!
By the way, loved that pic of the two of you -- just adorable!
Nice recap Liz and Ronald! It was great meeting all the TDCers in SF. Pretty cool gang. I hope to see you all again soon.
Here’s my response:
A villanelle for David Archuleta
Like a cold clear stream in a desert east
An oasis in the humdrum of my daily plagues
The voice quenches this listless traveler’s thirst
Your demeanor is manna, your sun-kissed smile’s blest
You’re a dew in these barren lands of blight and bleak
Cold and crystal-clear like a stream in a desert east
In pitch-dark nights your hymns calm the seething savage beasts
In the wilderness, as famished lost pilgrims plead for the day to break
Your voice’s sweet wine quenches these travelers’ thirst
Your kindness is pure honey or first oil from olives pressed
Genuine gold or diamond set apart from wayward gypsies’ fakes
Crystal–clear like a cold stream in a desert east
As we see the city walls, safe haven, a wellspring at the gates
Sound the trumpets and tambourines, thanksgiving we take
To the Giver of the voice that quenched this traveler’s thirst
Amid the bonfires, as grateful pilgrims gather to celebrate and feast
And the next journey is plotted by the stars heaven make
I will tell generations of a cold clear stream in a desert east
The voice that quenches this listless traveler’s thirst.
cootiedoc: WOW! That was beautiful!
Sorry for the late posting -- caught in the vortex again… LOL

Enjoy! (catches up with reading 2 threads)
“He has this ability to make his voice fragile and tender while at the same time full of power, and you feel it viscerally.”
I love this line! Thank you Ronald.
Ronald-- I’m loving your recap of your SF concert. I can’t get enough of it.
“One thing about David is that, when he gets the chance to be comfortable, he resorts to being quite unflappably himself. He stepped out onto the stage to the sound of screams, stepped up to the microphone, and simply said hi.”
David had us all charmed and chuckling at the SLC VIP that I was at. Just chatting and singing like we were sitting in his family room at home. At one point he stopped and kind of focused at the back of the room and then said “well, I guess it’s time to go for pictures. I’ll see you all in a few minutes.” Then he stopped again, looked at us and said,(with his pointer finger pointing up in a ‘hold on’ position) “wait, am I the only one that can hear Ray talking? Oh well, (waves his hand around) I’m just talking to the voices in my head again” as he indicated the ear pieces in his ears. He had us ROFL at that one.
cootiedoc -- very descriptive poem, just lovely
Mikesd, my concert buddy! Thanks for the Anaheim recap. How can you return to normal life after 3 shows! It took me two days to recover from my two shows. You are excellent company, my friend.
{{awestruck}} Please give your sweet husband a hug for me!
David bought a warm coat at Wal-Mart! He brings smiles & a bit of sunshine to my otherwise long workday and dreary cold Kentucky skies when I get his tweets on my phone!
Good night, and for David…
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to always do right by David.
Help us support David so that it’s always in his best interest.
A SPECIAL REQUEST LORD…CLOAK DAVID IN YOUR PROTECTIVE ARMS THROUGHOUT HIS WINTER TOUR, KEEPING DAVID AND HIS VOICE HEALTHY AND STRONG as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, have a good & restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always.
SF -- nice to know that David is cozy warm and always nice to hear from you.
Amen!
RONALD -- I was smiling while I was reading your post. How on earth you were able to resist sampling his vids before your concert astounds me. YAY for self-control!
And am sorry to say, I so envy you all. You get to see David at this stage of his career, on this EPIC tour and you guys get to bond with TDCers & other archies. I know I should be thankful that technology and very generous folks make it possible to have access to David’s performances and that I am able to connect with kindred spirits across the seas but… Oh never mind. Snap out of it JR and do a David! Haha.
HIGHERVIBE -- your vid is already included in our tour page
Yes, we could always enjoy another FOG. Thanks!
COOTIEDOC -- what a beautiful poem. Hope to hear from you more often.
SF -- Your concern for David is touching. But try to relax my sweetie (although I know you wouldn’t LOL). David will be fine. He is having a time of his life -- living his dream while inspiring ours.
I always look forward to your prayer.
SO, 2 shows to look forward to after the tour: NBC’s Today Show (21st) and Larry King. yay!
Guys have not been here to say how much I love reading all your recaps. As JR said, wish we can do the same, attend even just one of these concerts. By the way Ronaldsf, congratulations, no longer attorney OUT law, now real lawyer , with a license. Also congratulation for being a tito ( Uncle). you are now tito Ronald.
Thanks everyone, keep writing those juicy bits, anything will be manna from heaven.

SB
SB -- TBWY with an orchestra -- the way it’s meant to be, gah
VEE -- thanks once again for finding those vids!
Those Ninja AA videos are going to be the end of me. So perfect, so amazing, such incredible audio, the glory of Riu Riu and TBWY… ahhh… Thank you for allowing me to squee in your presence. I couldn’t contain myself another minute. Peace out.
JR: You are amazing -- I have been immersed in videos half the morning. I find it pretty interesting in a strange kind of way, that I can watch 99 videos of the same song and never get tired of them.
And last night I popped into the chat for a minute and Barriers was playing -- oh, I’ve missed that song -- so now I’m on a Barriers quest, going through the Solo Tour pages looking at those!
I’m not getting work done… and I don’t seem to care! LOL!
Ronaldsf, it was fun reading your recap. I haven’t attended a VIP yet but now I know, the 1st person in the photo line gets to spend the least amount of time w/David.
I had the pleasure of attending the Anaheim concert on Wed; great show! It was nice meeting posters from TDC & the various other fan sites. Also, it was fun randomly spotting David’s friends, members of his extended family, and members of the tour crew at the venue. I ran into Ray (tour manager) several times; he was always smiling.
I attended the Anaheim show and it was spectacular! It was so nice to meet Mike and reconnect with others whom I’ve seen at other Southern California events.
During the concert, David was in great voice and high spirits – much of it fueled by the enthusiastic response from the crowd. There were several times after he completed a song when the ovation from the crowd went on for an extended period of time and he couldn’t move on to the next song because the crowd was still showing the love for the prior song! I am glad he has learned to wait a bit before he moves on. It gives us a chance to show our appreciation – and he seems to be allowing himself to drink it in (JMHO).
A few cute moments: As soon as David started Zero Gravity, he took off like a rocket. The guitarist, Steve, had the biggest smile on his face. David’s energy never let up and the crowd was on their feet. I think that’s what precipitated the triple spin at the end! During the next song, I think David had a tough time finding the one ear monitor that he had taken out since it had wrapped itself around his back and was resting on the other shoulder. Steve reached over at one point to help David.
After the break when David came out in his suit jacket, the back collar wasn’t down. He performed the first song with the collar up. During the break before the next song, Dave stepped behind David and straightened the collar – kinda like a big brother. The band really has David’s back – literally.
In addition to David’s fantastic performance, I gotta say that the band was stellar. The new drummer is great. During the slower songs when no drum was needed, he sat at the drums with head bowed during the entire number. Steve on the guitar is a master. Kendra – wow what a multi-tasker -- keyboard, grand piano, violin. Also, sometimes when Kendra was at the grand piano, Dave was at the keyboard – I think coordinating the backing tracks for, for example, the children’s voices during Ave Maria.
The stage was decorated just enough to give a flavor of the holiday. When I realized they need to schlep the ‘trees’ and ‘Christmas Ornaments’ from venue to venue, I thought they did a nice job setting the mood. In addition, there was a lot done with lighting. Not distracting – but in service to setting a mood and enhancing the look and feel.
The show was well constructed and everyone involved contributed to making it very professional and polished. And David commanded that stage like I’ve never seen before. It seemed that the response from the audience egged him on. It was almost as if he was thinking ‘oh, you liked that? – well have a listen to this new run and vocal styling!’
I had the best time. It was a great way to anchor the spirit and joy of the season. Best wished to those of you who have upcoming concerts.
JR…You are so right…TBWY is the way it should always be sung…love it!

Gotta_Glow -- thanks for your recap. I love to hear all the stories!
davidfanLIZ -- You’re welcome. I like to hear the stories, too, so thought I’d add mine to the mix. It really is amazing to witness his transformation from where he started during the American Idol tour and where he is now.
Gotta_Glow -- thanks for that recap, especially about the band member tidbits. I was at Santa Rosa and San Francisco, did notice the stage setting/lights before the concert and during breaks, but was so focused on David that I did not see anything else. That’s why I so wish to thank those that do take vid’s -- I get to capture all the details I missed.
(((JR -- Vee -- and all others who are not able to have seen David)))
Liz -- Thank you for everything while we were in SR/SF… one highlight was being able to have a great discussion with your very charming and intelligent and (I might add) handsome son.
My hubby is special: in SF he noticed a girl in a wheelchair there with her aunt. She was a HUGE David fan so hubby gave her goodies out of our VIP bag -- scarf, christmas decoration and even his lanyard? (that thing with David’s pic on it that you have to wear for the meet and greet). Blair came back so excited saying that the young girl was beyond happy. I went to meet her as well and she was just shaking she was so thrilled.
Gotta_Glow -- how right you are -- amazing growth… in confidence and self belief in David from AI to now. I just love being able to know that we have many more years to enjoy watching his career develop.
anybody notice at the top of the marquee (before you hit the comments button for this article) that says GOLDENVOICE Presents the Budlight Concert Series…
awestruck -- love that story about your husband. I had extra goodie bag stuff (it was my second VIP) and gave them to the two cute guys sitting next to me in SF. They were MAJOR David fans and were agog at the pleasure of having such treasures!
And yes, “Goldenvoice” is perfect!
I’m so enjoying every bodies re-caps. Because I one of those unlucky ones , who can’t see a Christmas concert, these re-caps and videos mean the world to me.
Gotta_Glow—-This in particular made me giggle:
“A few cute moments: As soon as David started Zero Gravity, he took off like a rocket. Steve reached over at one point to help David.”
In this Zero Gravity, David also created a new move --must be named the Triple Archulutz, I think he picked this up from Ashley Wagner, when she skated to Silent Night.
We all know he’s a virtual sponge!
David is have a grand time in Rexburg. Very special for David with many friends & family (not mom & little sis though) there. He always picks it up a notch or two when family members are in the audience.
There should be videos galore tomorrow!
Nite, SF!
I just remembered: RASCAL have always wanted to hear TBWY w/o the vocal back-up! And we have that now with Ann Arbor
Oh RASCAL…

Just had to pop in to say Ronald, love your recap! Can’t believe you had to zip out of the venue for a meeting and then zip back in! lol
This made me smile bigtime: “One thing about David is that, when he gets the chance to be comfortable, he resorts to being quite unflappably himself. He said he was soooo excited to be in San Francisco – one could feel oodles of Archulove toward my (lovely) hometown.”
I really think it’s a little bit of a catch 22 thing with the crowd cheering vs. silence during performances. By now David feeds off of that crowd energy so I get the impression he’s a little taken aback by silence. lol OH WELL!
Haven’t read this whole thread yet. I’m pooped, but hopefully tomorrow. But —speaking of what works for him…I wanted to share this set of tweets from earlier today…before the VIP in Rexburg, ID. Just about KILLED ME. What a guy. (get out your hankies)
These tweets are from @tammy_m
David Archuleta is about to sing at my grandma’s assisted living center, 15 feet from me!!!
I can’t wait to see how adorable he is in person. What a sweetheart for singing here, right? No TV cameras or press. Top secret.
Guys, I just shook David Archuleta’s hand!! I might never wash it again…
OK, here’s what he sang: The Christmas Song, Mary Did You Know?, then he had a sweet older guy come up and sing Silent Night with him.
Then a lady requested that he sing I’ll Be Home for Christmas. I honestly started to cry at the end, it was so beautiful and sweet of him.
I got several videos of him singing, I’m uploading them to vimeo now and I’ll post when they’re there.
I told him my grandma’s name was Elinor, and he was like, “Oh, like the song!” and sang a few lines of Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) to her.
He’s so genuinely nice: after shaking everyone’s hand on the 1st row, he brushed off security and went down the other rows.
And asked everyone’s name, told every old lady he liked their Christmas sweater! They didn’t know who he was before; now they love him.
http://twitpic.com/s5gew -- David Archuleta, close up!
http://twitpic.com/s5i9v -- Another closeup. I still can’t believe this happened! Btw, he said he didn’t want to take the coat off b/c it was it was cold and he didn’t want to get sick before his performance tonight.

No sign of the videos yet.
W.H.A.T..A..P.R.I.N.C.E.
Nitey Nite!
So great to read everyone’s recap and stories. Thank you EVERYBODY! Ronald, what a drag that was, the assault and battery by fans!?!? I was so focused on the stage that I only remember you saying something like “he pushed me…” I had no idea the guy was so deliberate in being mean and violent. I am so sorry to hear that. It’s weird that before you showed up, I was getting really odd vibes from a couple of guys in front, a bit to my left, no doubt the same dude(s). I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but something was not quite right somehow.
I wondered what you thought when David re-emerged in a gorgeous suit and purple shirt, hehe! Funny you say you gasped LOL!
It was so much fun seeing many many familiar faces and meeting new ones. It’s like one giant reunion/party.
I don’t think I can write anything with a beginning, middle and end. My memories of the two days, SR and SF, are in bits and pieces and I’ll recount some of them in a random fashion.
Like SF, I couldn’t help but worry for David. At the SR VIP, when David appeared on the stage to sing for us a couple of songs, he looked almost dazed like he just woke up, not the usual perky energetic David. So he was tired and/or sleepy, that’s fine, but poor baby. Then while waiting for the show to start in SF, it didn’t help that Mike shows me David’s tweet that his voice is shot. My heart sank so I was determined to show him my love by cheering him on to give him some extra energy. Good thing hubby wasn’t with me on this show as I didn’t have to concern myself with whether he thought I was being too crazy cheering loudly! I thought it was interesting that David tweeted after the SF show “Thanks for keeping me going San Francisco!” I think a lot of fans were thinking and feeling what I was thinking and feeling, IMHO and David knows his fans are always there for him, giving him support.
The HUGE surprise of the evening was of course Lupe doing the duet with David. That was unbelievably exciting. I had wondered whether she would be with him on any of the CA shows since they have family here, but I soon forgot about it so I was super shocked! One fan had reported on another site that “Ray said that David will not see his mom until the end of the tour, so it was only one chance.” So lucky for us SF fans!!
ronald, I so agree with you about his Riu Riu Chiu in SF being very powerful and sexy. It struck me too that night and wondered if it was really different from the night before. So I watched videos of the SR RRC and the SF one and there is a distinct difference. In SF, he barely switched hands holding the mic, something he does often, but instead he held the mic with his left hand pretty much the whole time and his right hand was just mesmerizing!! He had bigger movements with the right hand and towards the beginning there is a part of the song where he shakes his index finger but in SF he really shook it. He was just more expressive and passionate with his whole body. The rhythmic steps he took, the body swaying, most definitely “some graceful animal, like a tiger prowling across the savannah”!! I think I have to go watch it again…
Ok, I just went and checked and you must watch mareroxx’ video. Close up ones are great but thanks to crownjewel *waves*, you get to see the full body for the full effect! The finger waving is at 0:55.

Before my eyes shut completely… highervibe, THANKS for the Warfields of Gold haha!! awestruck, your sweet hubby told me that story right before the show started. He was so happy he made someone happy! I am glad you had a great rest of the time in beautiful SF (though I’m mad they don’t play David!! something I have a hard time getting over. sorry.) G’nite all…
Hi beebee!!! Thank you for bringing here all the tweets about David’s visit to the assisted living center and pictures. Tears…
It took me so long to write my post, I just saw yours. Thank you again. I don’t know how I can love him more than I already do… sigh…
BeeBee -- thanks so much for sharing Tammy’s story.
WHAT.A.GUY.
Here’s David singing IBHFC @ the Elderly Home, thanks to TAMMY

Thanks davidfanLiz, awestruck, JR for appreciating my poem.
Awestruck, I heard Blair recount his story with the fan in a wheelchair, at our SF post-concert “debriefing” in Hotel Parc 55.
Thanks to Vee and JR for bringing the Ann Arbor “ninja” videos here. I was lucky I was there, live! He was specially marvelous that night! My attempts at writing a review always fail dismally as I think my prose does not do any justice to the phenomenon I was so privileged to witness. I will keep trying.
Incidentally, was that Silverfox who had the bouquet of roses which was handed to David after the finale in Ann Arbor? If it was you, then I saw you earlier at the Panera place across the auditorium but was too shy to approach and ask. I just surmised this from your screen name and the color of your mane. I might have seen you also in Del Mar.
Tammy’s story and the video at the retirement home moved me more than anything else! This is a huge reason why, I love our guy. I have not seen anything like him, a young celebrity, who is so sincere, so modest and so selfless. No publicity. No gimmicks. Just a very caring, giving heart. We only discover these things because we are fans who follow his every move even those that he tries not to put a spotlight on. He is truly a league of his own.
Some of you may already know that I am a physician. I am an internist and and infectious disease/HIV specialist (hence, cootiedoc)in SF. I have cared for elderly patients in nursing homes. Like some of you who may have cared for ageing parents, I know how dreary their existence can be.
The motley group that Tammy captured in her video was typical of the elderly care homes I have worked in. Most of them probably have some form of dementia. When Tammy showed a couple of close-up shots of almost expressionless faces but clapping their arthritic hands, some of them gently bobbing their heads to the tune and singing along with David, that just got me. The connection was palpable. I’m almost certain that somewhere in the recesses of those ageing, failing brains, a circuit connection was somehow respliced and switched on: a remembrance of that song played many Christmases ago. And with it the memories of their loved ones and the happy holidays with them in their former own homes when they were more agile and younger. Whew! Poignant is the word.
Thank you David for who you are and for what you do.
Hello to vermeer, highervibe, mikesd, gengen, ronaldsf, quietblanc, and Nate!!
Thanks to all of you who keep this site going. I salute all of you for your effort. Special mention to marlie7, JR and davidfanLiz.
cootiedoc -- your paragraph with “The connection was palpable. Whew! Poignant is the word.”
Likely a very accurate description and so well stated. It was evident to me from watching the vid that David truly wanted to be there, to sing and to bring joy…
cootiedoc, your description of the “motley crew” at the assisted-living home where David sang gave me chills. Yes, I agree, it was quite poignant. He is a remarkable young man, with a huge caring heart and not a speck of artifice.
