Montclair Moments
Connecting One to One
Where should I begin this review of the Montclair concert? At the beginning? I don’t think so. Perhaps the best way to begin is with David. He is, of course, the center of the event, the reason for my being in Montclair.
On the way to the venue, the weather was terrible, icy roads, pouring rain, dreary skies. But none of that quelled the anticipation I was feeling all day. Finally, sitting in orchestra row K, the lights blinked and Benton Paul came onstage with his band. I had never seen Benton perform, and I was completely surprised by his style. I think he’s found a new fan in both me and my sister. And then we had the 30 minute wait for David while Benton signed CD’s in the lobby.
I had talked to my sister enough over the last few days, so I turned around to see who was behind me. Four young teenagers sat together, talking, and I think I said something like, “Please don’t scream any louder than I do,” and there began a fun conversation.
Jackie, Chris, Robert, Sayuri (who is actually more of a Benton Paul fan, but that’s okay) and I talked ‘David talk’ for the full 30 minutes. We discussed vlogs, songs, videos on youtube and our fangirl/fanboy chat made the time sweep by. Jackie’s mother had given her a ticket to the concert for her birthday, and it was the first time any of them were able to go to see David live. I told them about TDC, and Chris was able to bring the site up on his cell phone.
This was a great bunch of kids. Smart, sassy (in a good way) and interesting, they represented to me one segment of David’s fandom that I don’t often get to spend time with. I’ve asked them to write a little something for us, so we’ll see if they have time between finals and Christmas to put their thoughts together on their first DAVID LIVE concert.
And then the lights flashed again and David’s band came out on stage. David appeared in his tux (gah!) and began the Christmas segment with Memories of Christmas. I wasn’t very fond of that song when I first heard it on the CD, but David, as usual, breathes even more life into his music in a live venue.
Every song he sang was filled with depth and emotion or movement and joy, reverence and solemnity. And then he sang Ave Maria. There was no sound around me but that of David’s voice. I have watched the videos, and I know there was some screaming, but that night, I didn’t hear any of it. David grabbed my heart and didn’t let go. Before the song was over the tears were slipping down my face in recognition of the beauty of that song as only David can do it.
A few more songs and it was over. How could it be over? It seemed to go by so fast. Streams of people headed for the exits and I noticed the remarkable diversity of the crowd. But most remarkable of all was that stepping outside, the clouds had cleared and the sky was full of stars and the 4 hour drive I was making to get home that night turned out to be swift and easy, clear roads and the ice storm was gone. (Twice when I’ve seen David, the weather was terrible before he came on stage, and cleared while he performed – Hershey had summer thunderstorms and Montclair had a wintery mix – that’s just a little woo woo for me!)
And speaking of storms, I cannot end without telling you about the dinner before the concert. Happy had organized a group to meet at an Italian restaurant across the street from the Wellmont Theater. I was a little nervous about meeting Bliss. Storms, Bliss – he and I had had a few awkward and nasty moments on TDC’s comments section.
But there was no need for trepidation. As soon as we met, and without a moment’s hesitation, we hugged and Bliss asked, “Are we speaking to each other?” with a gleam in his eye and the rest of the night we talked almost non-stop. There is no doubt that Bliss has a deep and respectful love of David and that is a connection between us that could not be denied. At the end of the dinner we both thought we’d check and see just how nasty we might have been to one another, each of us embarrassed that the other person was actually NICE! LOL So here’s a shout out to Bliss!
David somehow brings us to new connections and in some cases, old ones repaired. People who love David have something in their hearts that David ignites. Whether teens at their first concert or two older fans, we relate to one another through David, one to one to one…

Lovely, Marlie!! Isn’t it the best, connecting with David fans? I know I’ve had such wonderful times with those I’ve been fortunate to meet and spend time with. And I’m so very happy to hear that you and Bliss enjoyed some time together and patched things up! OK, I admit it--I’ve gotten a lot of chuckles out of your sparring--I swear, you two sounded like the Bickersons, sometimes!! And I could frequently see both of your points, but I’m really glad you let all that go and enjoyed the evening. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Marlie, Montclair was such a special evening, wasn’t it? I only wish we could have been identifiable to each other in a crowd!! I am a bit uncomfortable approaching strangers and asking them if they have a David fan site screen name!
Uh, ew, you are a weird, creepy woman, go away.
I was interested to see how my non fan sister in law would enjoy David’s show and of course was delighted when she did. Despite being carried away and caught up and beside myself I did try to sneak glances at her during the performance to gauge her reaction. She was wide eyed and smiling and immediately texted my brother after the show, “!!!!! OMG what an AMAZING voice!!”
The let down on Monday was severe and I was caught off guard with running eyes and nose and no kleenex left on a packed airplane back to NC! I was feeling so emotional that it hurt physically to even think about the experience. To be in the presence of such greatness and talent, to feel and see a pure expression of love and reverence… argh. It was DEEP!!!
Perhaps you noticed during the VIP Q&A the little lady who asked a question about a bird… she and her husband were leaning on the stage and she was staring up at David talking to him and the expression on her face… like she was dazzled. So sweet! Oh David what you do to us all.
Marlie
I always knew David’s aura was magical.
“David somehow brings us to new connections and in some cases, old ones repaired.”
I leave today for the last 4 shows on the tour. I am looking forward to seeing new friends at each one. As much as I love seeing David in concert, I enjoy the friendships that form a solid bond in his name.
Peace.

Great stories of connecting with people because of David. And gosh -- if you and bliss can hug and talk, what is the world coming to lol!!!!
Bliss -- hope I get to meet you someday. And I’ll be expecting a hug too!
Marlie: Spot on recap! If I don’t see any other Christmas show or attend any Christmas parties this season I will be satisfied because I already saw the best! Montclair was epic and I can barely put into words the amazing feeling of hope and strength and love for life that one comes away with from seeing David performing Christmas songs live!
The icing on the very delicious cake is that David has a new fan in my friend Ana, to whom I gifted a ticket for that night’s show. She remarked that he has come a long way since AI7, where she last saw him, that his voice has richened and that his stage presence is remarkable. She wiped tears away during “Ave Maria”, danced and sang during “Feliz Navidad” and swooned to “Fields of Gold”. She was very impressed with David’s intro to “Prayer Of The Children”, where he spoke about how children don’t care about who’s right and who’s wrong; they just want toys and friends and shelter. And then he tore our hearts out with a gut-wrenching performance of the song.
The weather was awful in my area that day causing us to miss the pre-show dinner. I was so looking forward to meeting up with you and your sister and my other David buds, and to meet Bliss and pabuckie and River but glad I spotted you and several others during the show and on the way out.
You can’t leave one of David’s live shows without a feeling of peace and love. And that’s just one of the many reasons that we keep going back for more.
Marlie, and a shout out to you too. To those who have not yet met Marlie, you’re in for a treat when you do. Pabuckie and I got to the restaurant a little early, and as soon as we walkied in and saw 2 women sitting at the first table, I ‘knew” that they were part of our pre-concert group. On the bus, there were 2 “kids”, a boy and a girl, and I sensed that they were going to the concert, which was true. David’s fans have a certain glow about them when they are in the “David Zone” (with apologies to Rod Serling), and these kids had it.
Marlie and I had an introduction that lasted about 2 seconds, and spent the next 1 1/2 hours connecting like 2 hometown buddies. Marlie totally “gets” all aspects of David’s enormous appeal, and her recap of the Montclair concert is spot on.
The pre-concert dinner was a great way to start the evening. The positive energy that David-inspired people exchange with each other is electric, and I left the restaurant even more psyched than when I arrived. Thanks to everyone at the dinner for making me feel so welcome and comfortable. Plus, the food was very good. As my grandmother would say, it was a “total pleasure”.
As for the concert itself, David is pure gold. Every song, every move, every word out of his mouth, warms your heart and soothes your soul. When I was able to take my eyes off of him, I would look around me at the faces of the people near me. Everybody, young and old, men and women, black, white and everything in between, glowed and smiled back at me if we made eye contact. This is what David inspires.
There are very few guarantees in life. Having a great time at a David Archuleta concert joins that very short list.
Sunday, is Westbury and my first VIP. I look forward to meeting everyone who’s going. To find me, look for the man “of a certain age” standing next to Pabuckie.
Liz, consider youself hugged.
oops, I believe the word is “yourself”
Bebereader: Thanks for your comments! I love the story of your friend, Ana, and her “conversion” to a David fan. My sister hasn’t quite reached that stage, but I think she is more a fan of David’s FANS! She always remarks how much she loves the people that meet up beforehand.
Bliss: Enjoy your first VIP. I know I had a hard time processing it until I shared it with others. Come and tell us about it. We would love your take on meeting David -- even for those all-too-quick few minutes they allow you to interact with him.
bliss -- however you spell it -- thanks!
Great write-up! I agree about Benton. I knew almost nothing about him before the concert in Waukegan and left a fan. I genuinely like his vibe and sound. I bought his EP and CD the next day on ITunes. Good stuff!

Help! Getting worried here. I clicked on Yes for Are you in?
There was no prompt to download anything. Also, I have not gotten any e-mails from them as reminders or updates. Oh my gosh, I feel like I am fighting traffic on the interstate to get to a David concert… thoughts?
#14 raelovingangels Same here although to be honest I just upgraded from dial-up to highspeed internet and I’m not sure I know what I’m doing. But I get to stumble around much faster now.
You may already have Silverlight installed. To check go to this Microsoft site -- if you already have Silverlight, it will tell you.

marlie -- thanks for the info on the broadcast tonight!
(In response to previous thread.)
Sorry Freofan for not reading your article until now! (I haven’t had much opportunity to log-in to TDC the past week… so much going on!) But I really appreciated your observations about this fanbase and how David has the ability to bring so many different people together. While on the marketing side of things this can be a problem, it also demonstrates how compelling a figure and artist David is that he can transcend traditional boundaries.
I feel ya on David needing to find the right producer. It sounds like David feels better about the songwriting this time around, but there are still a number of steps remaining in the album process!! I really am wondering how Jive will assess things and what styles of music they will feature on it (considering career path, how to market David, how to cater to his existing fans, etc., etc.). I’m thinking that David will lean on more of the soul and acoustic side, but we know that’s not all David can do, and management (which holds the strings) knows that. I can’t wait!!
marlie -- thanks for your concert writeup. Montclair had to be special, as the videos of his performance were sooo good. They were my favorites until I saw him on wednesday in Baltimore. Copied a couple (Ave Maria by songbird & the Riddle by 8throwcenter), put them on my zune player and took them in case I wanted to share them with a fan. Actually, I watched them on the hour ride to the venue. Must say they didn’t prepare me for what I was to experience live.
Sorry, am trying not to spam. This notebook wont let me compose more than one paragraph at a time and even that is difficult. Baltimore was an unbelievable experience for so many reasons. Met about 25 FOD’s, most being local but a few from out of state and country. They were very gracious and well organized group having attended several concerts prior to Baltimore. Being the odd woman (first CFTH, not FOD and from Washington the State) they helped acquaint me with what I was to experience. David in VIP is SO worth it. I’d do it again just for the added performance value. In addition to Touch My Hand (performing with so much confidence), he sang Mary Did You Know. Oh my goodness….. No one has ever REALLY sung that song before. I mean it was beautiful beyond words. Not sure I remembered to breathe as I was feeling light headed and
(cont.) must have been crying a bunch. At the photo op, I told him that his peformance of MDYK was unbelievably beautiful, to which he graciously thanked me. I think I said, No, (hand to chest) thank You. The rest of the concert was, I don’t know -- kind of like a dream. It’s hard to describe the wonderment I felt and obviously still do. Also, met some young adults -- grad students next to me; thirthysomething behind me; late teens with mom in front; a lot of guys; forty something couples; and then all of us more mature fans. Yes to whoever said this (ronaldsf?), David’s fan base appears very diverse. Oh if real life commitments (which I love as well) didn’t exist, I would be there with all the other fortunate multi concert goers. These cncerts are truly a pleasurable experience that will last forever in my memory.
fandaforeverti48 -- thanks so much for your stories. He does take our breath away, doesn’t he??
Hey dudes and dudettes!
I just got my state bar number! It’s 267038! It’s even searchable on their website! *tries to commit the number to memory*
That’s the last step folks! Now I have to celebrate LOL!
Woo hoo! Ronald! I am so proud of you, you’d think you were my son or brother.
Ronald -- wonderful news and congrats again (ps a balmy 23 degrees F here today)
ronald #23 -- Woot!!!
I just wanted to echo the sentiments of the others who were at the show at Foxwoods.
It was transcendental.
David’s performance of Ave Maria and O Holy Night during the sound check had me in tears from the front row, center. That’s something I have so rarely experienced…to be moved so deeply, shaken from the inside. What a truly glorious encounter.
Whoever it was that said, (paraphrasing here) “When David sings, he channels the divine and we witness the glory” said it best. I was physically weak after that experience.
It was great to share it all with so many of you. Meeting up with friends old & new always serves to amplify the energy and love in the air.
I also had the added pleasure of bringing a non-ODD friend with me to experience it all. It was great to have a friend and travel companion with whom to share all my David music and stories without judgment.
PS This first-timer was very impressed.
The best part of the whole event is that I get to do it again in Westbury.
Love to you all!
New VLOG: http://davidarchuletanetwork.ning.com/profiles/blogs/christmas-tour-is-almost-over
Is there any information out yet about Westbury? I am sitting in a ton of snow in CT and wondering how the day will play out and if the bus and precious cargo made it to NY yet. I also wondered if David would actually fly Boston to NY so that he’s there for build a bear. I don’t see any tweets or posts. Back to fretting.
hi tdc -- here’s a great stroudsburg concert review – he nailed it

David Archuleta’s Christmas show brings wonderment — holiday’s and his
Posted by John J. Moser
It was an astonishing sight: teen and ‘tween girls shrieking at and cheering someone singing traditional Christmas songs Friday at Stroudsburg’s Sherman Theater. But this was an astonishing concert. “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta sang so well in his holiday show – a little more than half of which was Christmas material – that he drew five standing ovations over his 17 songs in 90 minutes and often prompted spontaneous cheers and clapping mid-song.
Backed by a four-person band, he was by turn fun and great on pop material from his debut album; he was touching on covers such as Sting’s “Fields of Gold,” which he sang seated with just an acoustic guitarist backing him; and masterful on the classic yuletide songs. In fact, the Christmas material more fully showcased Archuleta’s wonderful voice, and the audience reacted more enthusiastically to them. The show started with Archuleta bounding around the stage for a pop set: a great “Waiting for Yesterday,” holding long, strong, high notes on “A Little Too Not Over You” and emoting with his hands.
He sat at a piano for Five For Fighting’s “The Riddle” – a version that, better than the original, prompted the crowd to break into clapping and shrieks. His big hit “Crush” was a bit rushed, but he nailed the high note, then ended the song with another. He closed the first part of the show with a chilling “Prayer of the Children,” his singing nearly a cappella amid the stark piano accompaniment. It brought the first standing ovation.
Archuleta’s still boyish (he turns 19 in a few days; the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to him), but he’s gained a world of stage confidence since his first tour brought him to Allentown’s Crocodile Rock Café in March. He smiled often, spoke to the crowd and moved about the stage. He was much looser on “Zero Gravity” – he gave the audience permission to dance, and they did – and on “Don’t Let Go,” he improvised a nice coda.
In fact, it was the more immediate approach to the holiday classics – the one thing his “Christmas From The Heart” album was missing, with its reverent adherence – that helped make the holiday part of the show so successful. After a brief break, he returned to the stage in black suit, singing his strong, poppy “Melodies of Christmas” on a stage bedecked with holiday lighting.
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” had as much swagger as Michael Buble. “Pat-a-pan,” which he sang in French, was kicked up a notch from the album. He was so emphatic on “Riu Riu Chiu,” which he sang in Spanish, that his face turned red.
But the amazing high notes of “Silent Night” brought spontaneous cheers, and a standing ovation. And the highlight was “Ave Maria,” a virtually perfect tenor voice singing his heart out in Latin. The high notes caused the audience to cheer and brought another standing ovation. The closing “Feliz Navidad” got the crowd up and dancing and turned into a sing-along, and the encore “O Holy Night” brought screams and cheers for its soaring vocals, and yet another standing ovation.
The level of Archuleta’s talent, the breadth of styles he can master, the warmth he brings to a concert. Those were Christmas gifts, indeed.

Hi all,
Still trying to process Friday night’s Stroudsburg concert…it will definitely be added to my list of most memorable life events. In short, the experience for me was sheer perfection.
I am often at a loss for words after attending a David concert. Certainly an overwhelming sense of joy…more like rapture. Like my heart is about to burst from the audio and visual assault to my senses. And I marvel at how much he brings to each and every song, performance after performance, adding nuances and surprises along the way. How he’s grown in confidence and stature and rapport with the audience. How at a startlingly young age, he exudes a sense of goodness, humility and compassion for others. I was deeply moved when he spoke about his charities and how everyone’s small contribution can make a difference to the greater good, and how it’s one of the best gifts you can give to yourself. So well said, David! I am utterly blown away by this young man.
A special thank you to my dear friend archiesfan4life with whom I shared the evening and for her lovely gifts. And it was a pleasure to finally meet Abrra (thank you for the CD – you’re an angel!), Dawn (am feasting on those pictures from all your concerts!), and of course to see TOfan and Refnaf again, albeit all too briefly. Nice to also see KT again and to meet Trish…wish I could have hung around for the afterparty with you guys, but glad to know you were able to get home safely.
Just wanted to mention a really powerful moment that came at the end of the concert…don’t know if this has been talked about or done before. As David was ending his finale song (OHN), a shower of spotlights that were poised just above him began to slowly descend, passing through him until they reached the floor, then slowly rising up again. As if the lights were bowing down to him in gratitude. It felt almost reverential, and I think Abrra or Dawn said it seemed like angels wings were enveloping David.
At that point my tears were overflowing.
It was a glorious ending to a most memorable night.
ZOE: Wish I could have been there with you -- it sounds absolutely perfect and glorious. Well, most of David’s concerts are
i’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s concert reviews. i hope someone captured on film the “shower of spotlights” beaming down on david.
re. build-a-bear, i read somewhere that over 200 tickets were sold. someone who works w/bab posted a cryptic tweet 20 minutes ago. maybe the show will go on afterall.
@DrewHollenbeck:
You know… Working… At Build-A-Bear… With David Archuleta.
Marlie,
One of these days I’ll remember to read the article before posting…seems I’m always coming back to comment on the column!
Loved to hear about your experience and the connections you made to the younguns. Hope they do get a chance to post because it would be a hoot to read their perspectives.
I’m with you on Benton Paul -- he was delightful and I totally enjoyed his performance. I think he will do quite nicely in his career.
Glad to hear that you and Bliss had a chance to make nice-nice, and, as you so aptly noted, “David somehow brings us to new connections and in some cases, old ones repaired. People who love David have something in their hearts that David ignites. Whether teens at their first concert or two older fans, we relate to one another through David, one to one to one…”
And Bliss…ain’t this the truth: “There are very few guarantees in life. Having a great time at a David Archuleta concert joins that very short list.”
Rocketdog: “Whoever it was that said, (paraphrasing here) “When David sings, he channels the divine and we witness the glory” said it best.” Thank you for finding that stunning quote…I hadn’t seen it before and it knocked my socks off!!
And to Ronaldsf -- Kudos on receiving your official state bar number! Guess we should now all address you as Counselor Ronaldsf??
Happy and healthy holidays to all my TDC friends! May we not have to wallow in David withdrawal for too long in 2010!
David sings to express what he finds difficult to say. Like David I find putting my true feelings into words challenging and since I most definitely cannot sing
, I look for other ways to make that heart connection. It is my fervent hope that I was able to convey to those I shared the concert with in Stroudsburg how much it means to me to be a part of this special community that David has brought together.
I am not a music aficionado – I just know that David brought music (and much more) back into my life and hearing him and seeing him in concert is an experience that leaves you conspiring with your friend Zoe (before the last song is sung) for yet another chance to do this again – the sooner the better.
Volumes are written by people who are qualified to describe every nuance relating to The Voice so I will leave them to their writing and say thank you for putting into words what I cannot.
The highlights of Friday evening, besides David of course!, were to see TOfan and Refnaf again and to be able to spend some time with them after the concert – I can’t wait to do that again! Trish0400, KT -- it was a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to seeing you again soon. I finally got to met Abrra – THANK YOU so much for the CD and the gift from your VIP goodie bag – I will treasure both forever! And Dawn -- {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}!!!
Of course, there’s my dear friend Zoe – our first concert together in Allentown seems like ages ago. Your friendship is a very special blessing and for that I thank David with all my heart – without him we never would have met.
I have started a journal to record all that has transpired in my life because of one David Archuleta and I pray that I will need more bookcases to hold all that I will fill over the years.
Love & Hugs to all!
Archiesfan4life -- what an eloquent posting!!
Your friendship is at the tippy top of my gratitude list when I count the many blessings I’ve received due to the incomparable David Archuleta!
{{{{HUGE HUGS}}}}
Thanks everyone!! I just wrote a demand letter today and ended it with my signature and bar number. Feels so goooood!
I’m here to report that the 2ND ANNUAL ARCHIE AWARDS schedule has been pushed back about a week, both because it involves a good amount of work to prepare all the categories and also this way we can organize the voting to happen after Xmas when people have more time on their hands. This is a very busy time of year and we hope to get maximum participation.
Sorry for the delay, but it will come straight away!
Congratulations Ronald, I dedicate David singing ‘Oh what a feelin’ to you.:)
Marlie, yes David is the tie that binds us all together.
{{goboywonder}}
archiesfan4life: You underestimate your writing skills. You description of meeting close friends and “new” ones is heartwarming and your friendship with Zoe shines out from your comment. Amazing the connections we make from our shared love of one David Archuleta.

Thanks again!
Woo hoo! This looks like a fun concert!

Oh my goodness…have NO biz bein’ here ODDn’ at the moment and have to focus elsewhere now…had just come online to say how great David did on Today, rockin’ the plaid n’ all…
he nailed it and looked adorably handsome.
Then…I see last night’s out of cont-a-rollll, Archu-antics in Westbury!! Show looked like an awesome, wild part-ay…happy for all those that got to experience it!!!
What a way to go out on his best tour ever..yet!
Oh mannn…cannot get “lost” now…but things to look forward to in Archuland later; hope I can keep up!
Have a good day~
One last note, I’d been thinking about throughout this tour and even before, knowing how his last solo tour was…but Westbury finale solidifies it more…
Though he likely wouldn’t see it this way and had fun on summer tour etc…
I’m SO glad David is back in ‘his element’ and not constricted by “someone else’s tour”….he was always ready and able to shine best as the star of his show. Go David.
It was a GREAT Christmas From The Heart tour, a real gift to his fans, and he’ll never know how many hearts he touched. Congratulations and Many Heartfelt Thanks, David.

Back to the holiday prep!
