The Greatest of These is Charity
On Star Power and Charity Work
Among David Archuleta’s incredible qualities is his big ol’ heart and how quickly he is ready to use it to inspire and give back. It was very clear, not only how David chose to inspire with song but also how he literally put his money where his mouth is in encouraging his fans to donate to charities.
Since his time in the limelight, David has done what he could to promote charity work – Invisible Children, Rising Star Outreach, the Lisa Lopes Foundation, etc. – and his Arch Angels have matched him in kind – from donating the most funds for Stand Up 2 Cancer to building the Angels for a Cause network. David has given us so much, and we are so eager and willing to give because he urges us to.
That’s what is often called Star Power, and it’s a quality that many celebrities have adopted: Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, and the Star Power charity poster boy himself, Bono from U2. I am impressed most by David’s efforts, of course, not just because I’m a hardcore David fan but because he’s perhaps the one with the least money out of these celebs, and he’s already mobilizing on behalf of the less fortunate to bring attention to their needs. AI gave him a platform from which to launch himself, and already, charity work is at the core of what he wishes to do with his talents and career.
I think of David’s star power and charity work because we are in the midst of a terrible tragedy that unfolded in Haiti last week with a devastating earthquake. Tonight, a telethon, spearheaded by Clooney and Wyclef Jean, airs on all the major networks at 8 pm EST to request donations for this disaster. I’m so pleased that David will be apart of the musical spectacle, as he already has faith that we will adhere to his tweet last week imploring us to “not be afraid and give what we can.”
I think of David and his sincerity because this past week fellow music artist Wyclef came under scrutiny when his NGO, Yele Haiti, which managed to raise $2 million in donations, was accused of corruption and financial mismanagement. Considering that Wyclef immediately requested aid through his foundation the day that the disaster struck and that he immediately flew down to the island to do what he could to help, I find it suspect that certain journalists and gossip mongers took the time to dig up dirt and sling mud at his efforts. I do not doubt he has made mistakes, but I personally don’t see anything wrong if he was able to raise that many donations in such a short period of time (he accepted $5 text donations). I pay more to see a movie for crying out loud; you only hope that those who are raising funds for a disaster will put the money to good use.
A high profile celebrity spearheading his own organization hardly seems scandalous to me, and knowing that he was helping to bury his fellow Haitians last week, I’d rather hear about these efforts than to hear him defend Yele Haiti, which was an active NGO long before the Haiti earthquake. Still, if a spotlight has shown suddenly on his organization, at least he now knows he has to be above board with his financial dealings.
I raise the specter of Wyclef’s Yele Haiti because it’s indicative of Star Power and its ability to mobilize so quickly even as it is also subject to public scrutiny. What David is doing (and what others tend to do) makes the most sense: partnering up with existing charities and using one’s high profile status to bring attention to the work such organizations conduct and how our donations will be used to support such work.
I tend to have an ambivalent attitude towards charity organizations myself. I do not hesitate to donate in the wake of disasters, but in the long term, my philosophy tends to be:
Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat forever.
The charity I cherish is the one in which what we give lasts a lifetime. I only pray that this terrible disaster is an immense opportunity for nation-building and a stronger Haiti. To waste this opportunity with scandal, corruption, and failed humanity would be a sin and a crime.
I’m all about education, and someone like David can teach us so much: about faith, hope, and above all these, charity.
Hello Gorgeous

HG, thank you for highlighting David’s commitment to charity and shedding light on the ability (and some would say responsibility) of celebrities to lend their fame to good causes.
For David, it seems to go to the core of who he is. For instance, he is considering going on a formal mission—his life’s calling is first, and his career is in service to it.
David has tweeted that he will be handling phones tonight, and so I’m thinking he won’t perform, which is definitely a lost opportunity.
Just a couple minutes of him being on the air, with his genuineness, would be such a moving way to inspire people to give. Here’s hoping he will somehow be able to sing or get some camera time, and that tonight’s effort will be enormously successful.
Still, being the politico that I am, I am also frustrated that individual-giving efforts like these get highlighted in the media, but the conditions of global inequality that produce disasters like in Haiti are perpetuated every day. And celebrities feel confined as to what causes they can support, which go beyond charity and raise the specter of having people disagree with them and losing fans. The late archbishop Hélder Pessoa Câmara said, “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist.”
HG, you’re right in asking how one can help in a way that lasts a lifetime? Through my own work, I don’t meet with general praise, but encounter fierce opposition. That is the trade-off. But hopefully more celebrities will (or feel like they can) begin to speak out, not only to ameliorate the effects of injustice, but to prevent it as well.
HG: Thank you for writing this piece that not only highlights on of David’s deepest personal characteristics, but reminds us all that we can make a difference, too.
I have posted that video of David speaking before the Foxwoods Prayer of the Children in several places because there is something so simple and pure in his words. He has the ability to reduce all the complexity of political strife and war to a simple message. “Kids don’t care who is right or wrong…they just want their friends and toys to play with, to be with their family and to have a shelter over their heads.”
David is wise beyond his years and seems to go right to the heart of the matter, no rhetoric, no BS. Star Power.
Ronald, I know what you mean (and don’t even get me started on some of the news coverage that highlight demeaning imagery and descriptions like “looting” and “rioting” or folks being more concerned about “security” in Haiti than they are about saving lives).
I love David’s efforts to “give food to the poor,” but I especially admire those who are willing to ask, like the late archbishop, why the poor have no food.
Now, I’m really proud of our David for being so giving of himself to man the phone lines, but dammit! His management/label should have pushed for David to sing! We all know how David feels about lending his Voice for inspiration, especially for a cause like this.
If he is not performing, then I’d be beyond annoyed if, say, someone like Adam Lambert was. (No rivalry here, just comparing the differences in promo that some music artists get.)
HG: Your comment about security reminded me of the night this week that Sanjay Gupta was left alone -- the only doctor -- in a hospital tent full of patients, while the other doctors from the UN were bussed away for “security reasons.” He looked exhausted and confused and overwhelmed by the task at hand, but he stayed and took care of those patients. Doctor first, journalist second, was what he said.
As for David not performing -- some people have not realized or experienced what David can do when his Voice touches your soul.
As for David not performing – some people have not realized or experienced what David can do when his Voice touches your soul.
Tell me about it!
HG: If George Clooney saw David singing Prayer of the Children, he’d be on the top spot.
Well, Marlie, there is now a rumor going around (heard it first on MJ’s) that David will be singing Prayer of the Children.
(Keeping my fingers crossed.)
David has shown us from the very beginning what was in his heart. I feel that is a major reason so many people were drawn to him. He is always so willing to give of himself and to have people feel like they matter when he meets them. David was proactive about the telethon. According to a Jim Cantiello tweet, it was David’s team that got a hold of him asking how to help out. Unfortunately, David is still too far down on the “superstar list” to be considered for performing. As George Clooney said in a New York Times interview:
“Another problem, he said, is explaining to celebrities who are eager to help that only a few of the 130 who are expected will actually find room in a program that can accommodate 18 performances and 18 speakers. The rest will help staff a celebrity phone bank, through which thousands of lines are being channeled.”
I am just glad that David is a part of this and it makes me proud to be a fan of such a warm and giving human being.
I found the list of performers on IF
PERFORMANCES:
Christina Aguilera (New Song)
Justin feat. Matt Morris (Hallelujah)
U2 feat. Rihanna & Jay-Z (Stranded)
John Legend (Motherless Child)
Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys
Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, Keith Urban,Mary J. Blige
Beyonce, Taylor Swift,Shakira, Sting, Dave Matthews,
Wyclef Jean, Coldplay.
Now I’m wishing David would be singing Ave Maria. I bet there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the whole place.
“Among those manning the phone banks and taking donations during tonight’s telecast of Hope for Haiti Now will be (in alphabetical order): Ben Affleck, Tim Allen, Jennifer Aniston, David Archuleta, Alec Baldwin, Ellen Barkin, Drew Barrymore, Jack Black, Emily Blunt, Russell Brand, Benjamin Bratt, Pierce Brosnan, Gerard Butler, Chevy Chase, Kristin Chenoweth, Sacha Baron Cohen, Common, Cat Cora, Bradley Cooper, Daniel Craig, Cindy Crawford, Penelope Cruz, Billy Crystal, John Cusack, Eric Dane, Ellen DeGeneres, Fran Drescher, Michael Clarke Duncan, Zac Efron, Jenna Elfman, Colin Farrell, Andy Garcia, Mel Gibson, Tyrese Gibson, Selena Gomez, Neil Patrick Harris, Taraji P. cutter12: I am just glad that David is a part of this and it makes me proud to be a fan of such a warm and giving human being.
Amen!
I’m grinning from-ear-to-ear about the NAMES on the list David will be manning the phones with!
What a joy to burst with pride with each step he takes!
HG #7, would be great if that rumor is true. Can you imagine them showing a montage while David sings Prayer of the Children?
Cutter12 #10, this is an impressive list indeed! I don’t recognize all the names, but it seems like David’s among a very short list of musicians in that phone-manning list. The other musicians I recognize are Zac Efron, the Jonas Brothers, and Ringo Starr!
Lovely article HG. From the beginning we sensed David would use his power for the greater good. It did not take him long to sail that ship. I only see it growing exponentially from here. His fame, influence and how he takes control to make the most of what he has been given for positive things. It is heartbreaking that this tragic event is bringing these celebrities together, but David belongs there and I am glad he is. Whether it is doing a surprise visit to entertain a retirement community, or supporting causes around the world, or simply lifting our spirts in the many ways he does, he is a force to be reckonned (sp?) with, and it is a beautiful thing.
http://tweetphoto.com/9326006 -- photo of David and Alec Baldwin from the telethon.
I bet all the callers are saying -- I’ll hold for David Archuleta and that’s why no one else is on the phone.
This was just twitted:
jambajim: The show’s over but the work still continues. Clipping press i/vs all nite long. OMG @DavidArchie sang backstage for our producers. Dawwwww!
Now why would David sing for the producers @ a telethon?
JR: Now why would David sing for the producers @ a telethon?
Maybe they asked him to? Maybe they want him to do something else? Maybe one of them has ODD?
Well they are the producers, they should have asked him to sing upfront and not backstage! Now we have to wait for Monday to see the clip from Jim!!
Found this comment & wanted to share- The operators rang the calls through randomly to the celebs. Someone on LAF got Ray Romano the comedian. They asked for David. He told them David left early.
And some more good news on the charity front-
Invisible Children won the Chase Community challenge for $1 million. They received 123990 votes.
Here is the final tally if you’re interested.

Re. #4 and dr. sanjay gupta, i saw that and agree that he appeared exhausted and overwhelmed. some of his tweets convey the desperation that he’s witnessing.
a few minutes ago, fox news aired a commentary knocking the doctors serving as journalists in Haiti. i didn’t catch the entire segment but they flashed a clip of dr. gupta and mentioned how some doctors are making the story about themselves and not the victims. i’m very disappointed in fox. that is soooo not what gupta is about.
Good Afternoon,
I haven’t read above yet; I want to post this while it’s still on my clipboard.

Beautiful Article HG. And I love the title. David is nothing short of inspirational in his effort to bring awareness to the great needs on our planet.
Good Deeds
Haiti Telethon: What You Didn’t See on TV
Hollywood came together to support Haiti on Friday night – and reunited a few famous exes in the process.
…”The celebrities were so low-key. Everyone drove themselves, there were no handlers, no entourages,” adds the source. “Everyone was in a good mood. Most people showed up early and many celebrities, including Chevy Chase, Olivia Wilde and David Archuleta, stayed after the telethon was over so they could keep answering phone calls. …
Making Connections
“Celebs were catching up with each other and sitting down with staff and just chatting, talking about how sad the situation in Haiti was and how happy they were to help. The success of the night put a lot of people in a euphoric mood and a lot of people made plans to get together later,” the source adds.
… In the greenroom, Chris Rock noshed on a cupcake from Crumbs bakery while talking to Ben Stiller. Morgan Freeman and Halle Berry chatted about her daughter Nahla. And Leonardo DiCaprio drank white wine while Archuleta rejoiced when he found papaya on the fruit platter.

David’s Vlog:
Wow, watched that vlog from my Blackberry (technology is so cool!) and heard that “horrible clicking noise.” David put up an apology in his vlog description right away lol. People should check out the vlog -- I haven’t seen David this impassioned about a charity cause before. He is beautiful.
Marlie, luvin that article. I love how… distinctive David is. Cause if someone had covered up the name, and we got those 2 facts about some mystery person -- stayed late to take telephone calls and rejoiced at a papaya -- we’d all know exactly who it is! lol
I have never seen this video before…have you?
posted on youtube by snarkyways.
Speaking of Star Power -- Michael Jackson inspires this group again:
JR #23- Archuleta rejoiced when he found papaya on the fruit platter.
I loved how the author used the word “rejoice”. It’s a perfect description of how David sees many things in life. And how many of his fans see him.
Yup Marlie #26. And the bromance continues eh?
BTW, I dunno if you have logged on to the BillboardLive site, but David’s VOD has expired so the timer/sked at the top right now indicates TBA.
But don’t fret cos one fabulous and wonderful archie by the name of FLIPANGEL34 has uploaded her Live-streamed Director’s Cut Billboard videos to YT and they are now posted in our MASHANTUCKET TOUR PAGE -- finally completing the BillBoard set. Check ‘em out! [NOTE to BILLBOARD -- you better be working on that DVD you said you would release!]
Also, BALTIMORE, STROUDSBURG, BOSTON & WESTBURY TOUR PAGES have been updated with more unbelievably uberHD 1280x720 vids, thanks to kmancuso646, thelanavs, ktiitk, polkapinkdots & VTAMTAVGMN. In some vids, David’s face is even bigger than the monitor!
Soooo, you have been warned, OK?
ps: for this last update of the video vault, there are two venues that have missing performances: Rexburg (WFY, ZG, Crush & OHN) & Beaver Creek (WFY, ZG & Crush). So if any of you spot them posted somewhere, let me know -- thanks!
cutter12 -- you know if the author made a blind item out of it -- took away David’s name, I don’t think we will have any problem identifying who that celebrity was!
Hellooo TDC…just popped in to catch “the latest”, and my A.D.D. mixed with my O.D.D. (killer combo) got me distracted from the article to that DA/DC video…I’d never seen that!
Awwwww…nice. DA/DC <3 fest~ Tks for posting.
That should be where all the fans of both finally leave THAT "never-say-die" debate too…since that's where those guys have been for like…ever. I loved Season 7…of course it brought us (the)David…but I always thought the contestants that year, esp. final 10, had a good vibe all around.
But then, I'll forever be partial to Season 7.
Ok~back later to read article!
hm…just fyi…only 2nd time this happened, but just posted and I don’t see it.
I know sometimes it goes through screening, but the only other time this happened to me, it never showed up.
Just letting u know~Have a good day!
amb4dja: Yep, found it in the SPAM filter. I’m not sure what caused that -- perhaps the words Killer and die? Let’s see if this one goes there, too.
update: nope -- it went right through. I’ll have to see what makes the system think something is spam. (walks off scratching head)
Marlie7, never saw that Archucook video before!! So well done!
And I love how my incarcerated brethren are still rockin the Michael lol!
Is there any way to see David’s concert on BillboardLive? I hear it’s gonna come out on DVD? Because I failed to see it since it aired! *dodges tomatoes*
ronald: JR just posted that she has links to all the videos from the BillboardLive concert on the other thread. Go here:

The Video of David singing after the Haiti Concert:
http://newsroom.mtv.com/2010/01/26/david-archuleta-haiti/
@kbestor is cute with this twit:
“I finally made it to MTV! (After seeing Flavor Flav there, Is that a good thing?) Thanks anyway to David A! http://bit.ly/cxDh9p“
JR #30 -- That is the truth.
and it took me awhile to grasp what Kurt Bestor meant by that tweet. I guess I shouldn’t stay up all night surfin’ the net. lol
The David’s video is really great. I think that was what was so wonderful about that season was the true caring and respect we saw between the two men. It is a true delight to see it again.
I am impressed with David’s genuine caring about the unfortunates especially children. He will not be ruined by his fame and fortune because he is a wise young man and knows what is truly important. I am very proud to support him and continue being a loyal fan.
Speaking of “Star Power and Charity Work”…(and not to pop in to be negative, but have to vent my “protective of our guy” self somewhere” right now)…just where IS the “Voice of a new generation” on the We Are The World redo?!!!
He should have been invited. Period. S’up with that?! Hrrmpfff! mad.
I mean c’monnnn….Julienne Huff??? Jeff Bridges, Jo-(Schmo) Bros and Nicole (doesn’t even sing, oh yea …her dad.) Richie?! (…sorry David, not trying not to denigrate others to make my point on your behalf…but….not exactly musical icons?!!)
Arrrrggghh. I don’t get it. I can hear David’s soulful sliding riffs just thinking about it. Add that to his sweet, generous soul and
amb4dja: Was this something I missed on the Grammy’s?
MARLIE -- The 25th anniversary remake of “We are the World” happened on Feb 1 with about 81 musicians/celebrities (and still counting) participating. Procceds will go to Haiti.
AMB4DJA -- I think we have to factor in connections wrt to the invites to the WATW remake. A good number of the participants are rappers and I find this tidbit from one of them amusing and insightful -- Rapper Lil Wayne said he was blessed to record the tune but was surprised when told he would do Bob Dylan’s part from the original. “I don’t know how to sing,” he said with a smile.
I would have loved to see David included, too.
Apparently, Snarkies got hacked today and had to set up a temporary site:
The temporary URL is http://snarky-archies.blogspot.com
Sending up a little prayer that they are able to recover their history!
Short video of David at soundcheck tonight

And here’s the link for the live broadcast of the Jordin Spark’s event at 11:45 am EST:

can someone tell me why I can’t get on to Snarky Archies? It has a message that the blog is restricted??? LOVED NO AIR!
oops. had I looked up a ways I would have seen the answer about Snarkies… so sorry.
