A Songbook Retrospective
Who Owns This Song Now?
When David sings a cover of a song, he invariably does it better than the original. It must be uncomfortable to have David take on one of your songs, to see the way he makes it his own, adding a run or a softening an edge to make it just right. That’s his gift.
So let’s take a musical journey, and look back at the songs David has performed that he has made more beautiful, or more fun, or more emotional – because that’s what he does. And we’ll move way past his American Idol days and begin with his Solo Career. These won’t be in order because I’m picking the video that you can hear over the screaming. So just jump along with me back and forth through time.
Apologize by One Republic – I really like this song, and Ryan Tedder’s voice has an interesting breathy quality. But I love it when David lets loose with this even more. Let’s view the version that David performed in his summer tour. There is a sadness in his eyes when he sings this song here, and many speculated that he had his own personal reasons for singing it. But you can see real emotion in David’s eyes when he sings any song. He has the ability to make us believe that he has lived the lyrics of the song, no matter what they are. If he sang about taking a trip to the moon, I’d believe him.
Angels by Robbie Williams – It is hard to separate this song from David at all – or to even remember that someone else wrote it. When David sang it on AI, it was the first opportunity for him to stay at the piano and sing the whole song while playing. Then during his AI tour, with his emotional and intense rendition, he made the song his own. Now, even when David plays his electronic piano and sings this song all by himself, it is full and rich and still can bring many of us to tears.
Stand By Me by Ben E. King – Of all the songs that David sings, I think this one shows off his swagger better than any. And we love a little ArchuSwagger with our music, don’t we?!? Manila loved it, too.
The Medley – One by U2, , Gotta Be by, Love Song by Sara Barielles, I’m Yours by Jason Mraz When David pulled this medley out of his hat in Virginia Beach at his first solo concert, the crowd went crazy. David’s voice combined with the song One, by U2 caused some of his ardent fans to start a campaign for him to sing the whole song. They even delivered the letters to him personally. I suspect we all still hope he’ll have a chance to perform the whole song in the future. In the meantime, we got to hear a little snippet at the start of this Medley .
Bubbly by Colbie Caillat This was a fabulous surprise for many of us when David sang this for the first time at the summer concert in Pittsburgh. And though the song as sung by Colbie Caillat has some interesting sexual undertones, David seems to be able to sing the whole thing with a kind of lightness and laughter and purity. Go figure.
Fields of Gold by Sting Is there anything that can be said about David’s performance of this song that hasn’t been said? No. So, just enjoy it once again.
The Riddle by Five for Fighting The first time David sang this song, I wasn’t sure he’d made a good choice. His performance, although never weak, was tentative. David seemed to hold back, to keep his powerful voice in check. Perhaps it was nerves, perhaps he wasn’t sure he’d remember the words. In any case, with a bit of practice he took this song and made it his own.
Prayer of the Children by Kurt Bestor This song was made for David. With his ability to use his voice to render both gentle tenderness and desperate anguish, David makes us feel the prayer of the children. Who can listen to this without knowing the deep conviction David has for those less fortunate than himself.

In a happy note: Someone confirmed that david has a solo part in the song
@DizzyLizzy88 @angelicavale ¿me puedes decir si David Archuleta tuvó una parte para el solo o fue parte del coro? Por fa
“Can you please tell me if David Archuleta had a solo part or was he just part of the chorus?”
and her response:
@angelicavale @DizzyLizzy88 El si Tuvo una parte solo…
“He did have a solo part”

And Ricardo Montaner Retweeted this , his blessing to David do a cover of his songs
ILYarchie21 @sandritangel @Maaaaaaaaaaar @juli_85 si las songs de @montanertwiter son inceible ojala @DavidArchie algun dia cante alguna cancion de el
yeah @MontanerTwiter songs are amazing I hope @DavidArchie does a cover of one of his songs someday
MARLIE -- going down memory lane again -- haaaaay. Thanks for putting this up.
David spins and caresses a melody with the intimate sound of his precious voice, wrapping itself around notes like they are gossamer… You can’t help but be drawn to that mouth which produces this rare, hair-raising quality that separates the gifted communicators from mere singers.
You can feel it in each lingering vocal caress -- its like being whispered a beautiful, ghostly secret. And it’s a secret you’ll want to share.
ps -- don’t mind me. It has been a loooooooong day full of math and logic. i needed this break

“To Be With You” A True Definition Of Love By David Archuleta
Recently as you might be aware, I conducted a phone interview with the ever talented David Archuleta. As a good journalist I did my background and my scrutinous study of my potential subject. I knew David was the runner up on American Idol, I knew he launched his career after his placement on American Idol. I also knew he sang the song ” A Thousand Miles” sung originally by Vanessa Carlton on a YouTube video. I love “A Thousand Miles.” In short, I didnt know much about David past the print and I cannot say the same after I got off the phone with him. What I did learn quickly during and after our phone call was how gifted and humble of an artist he is. To me it is rare to find such a talented young man who wants to touch the world with his passion of music. It reminds me of myself in my younger days. His love of music is pure, and to me this is the truest form of music. Most artists exist only because of the fame, what the labels dictate, and the false impression of the dreams in our mind. In these dreams they make us believe by being famous and rich they are the only attributes and goals to life--this sadly is not the truth, and its quite misleading. The shining stars up above are a mere elusion to the reality dreams are a far reaching, and work and passion are the spaceship to get us to our goals. Even sometimes when we arrive there it is nothing like we thought. This is why I have to say I love David. I think he grasps this concept and doesn’t allow their hypnotic false light to sway his course to pure music as I term it. Music ISN’T ABOUT MONEY, IT ISN’T ABOUT FAME, it’s about MOVING A SOUL! PURE music are the goosebumps you get when you hear a song which moves you. I call it an artist’s “moment of truth” when you can truly feel they believe what they are singing….

Thank you for the retrospective Marlie! It’s amazing how David makes any song so much more enjoyable. Even ‘Happy Birthday’ sounds new again.
My favorite cover is ‘Bubbly’. I don’t know why hearing his version of it moves me so much. I cried silently when I heard him sing it for the first time in Pittsburgh and it never fails to suspend time a little for me whenever I hear it now.
I’m looking forward to hearing his part in ‘We are the World’!
Wonderful post, Marlie. Everything you say here could also apply to the Christmas carols. David certainly made those songs his own as well. I’m still listening to the CD and watching the videos from the CFTH Tour. Yesterday, I came across this:
A rarely viewed, very close up of Riu Riu Chiu.
I’m mesmerized by his singing hand -- especially at 3:08 to the end. Not only are the songs in his heart, the notes are truly in his hands.

Can’t wait to see his solo shot. Heard that those with solo parts had their photo shoot already in the arena, like these ones --

bluebarsa: I forgot to say in the article that I wasn’t going to include the Christmas songs, dang it. LOL I agree with you wholeheartedly. When I was thinking about the cover songs, the whole Christmas CD came to mind. But I knew the post would be long as it is (still having trouble with the sizing of those videos).
Thanks for the video of RRC -- I don’t think I’ve seen that one before.
JR: David spins and caresses a melody with the intimate sound of his precious voice, wrapping itself around notes like they are gossamer… You can’t help but be drawn to that mouth which produces this rare, hair-raising quality that separates the gifted communicators from mere singers.
You said it so beautifully. Not only does his voice wrap itself around the notes, but around our hearts, too.
Just love it when other artists appreciate him:
Twit from Ricardo Montaner ( a famous latin singer):
@tellmebreen @AndreaArchie @tenick_jonas ,si tendra un gran futuro..y ayer canto muy bien su parte de “Somos el mundo”
Traslation:
@tellmebreen @AndreaArchie @tenick_jonas ,.Yes, he will have a great future and yesterday sang very well his part of the song “Somos el Mundo”
Another twit from him:
@montanertwiter http://bit.ly/9z3ZT4 @DavidArchie,este muchacho tiene gran talento…lo veo con una carrera muy larga y muy exitosa.
Translation:
This boy has a great talent, I see a long successful career ahead of him
I’m loving that David had a solo part -- no matter how small it might be. And that other artists tweeted about it -- well, that’s the icing.
bluebarsa #4 -- thanks for that. I had the great pleasure of being the first row for two of the Xmas shows. It was just by chance with VIP tickets, you don’t know where you are till you get there. I was close enough that I could really see everything, and I was mesmerized by his hands. They are delicate and expressive and are constantly in motion, dancing the music, adding to the emotion and depth of the song. Gengen took some beautiful hand pictures. I may need to write an article about his hands at some point lol!
Marlie -- I’m loving the retrospective, starting with that soulful top picture. My personal fave is FOG. I can’t get enough of the song. I had the privilege of telling David (while I gently held his hand) that his version was transcendent.
But my other fave is Bubbly. I still have it as my ringtone lol!
Ooh Eem Gee, That Apologized screen cap is toxic, lol.
I loveeee the Medley. Specially “One”. He should record songs like that.
I know this doesn´t exactly have anything to do with the topic at hand, but I just came across this video clip. Here´s the description:
daai08 — December 21, 2009 — After David belted out the most powerful version of What Child Is This the girl passed out on the floor behind me, and David gave her his water bottle. He said ” I dont know if that ever happened to me before”.
I just cannot believe this guy. I have yet to witness another human being with David´s star-factor be so “aware” of his audience. He never misses any little thing that goes on in the audience even when he´s really into a song.
How he can manage to deliver a song with all that emotion in it, and at the same time pay attention on a single fan in the middle of a MASS of people, is beyond me.
He sees all his fans as individuals. I mean, at meet & greets he takes the time to listen to you, to look you in the eye and makes you feel like you´re the center of his attention. God, I love him so much it makes me sick
Dang it! In my comment above the youtube-video should be embedded but it isn´t… and I don´t know why. So I´m going to have to ask you to copy and paste and remove the “v” after the “http”, however annoying it might be lol.
embe: You did it right, except that anything after the & in the youtube “related” items needs to be removed. I love watching that -- you are so right -- David is aware of the fans, each and every one.
Thank you for sharing that story, Embe #13. Though I must disagree with David (keeping the New Rules in mind
) that giving a girl your water bottle perhaps is not the best way to calm her down after she has passed out lol! What if she had passed out again?
Marlie, I love this retrospective. As for “Who Owns This Song Now?” I would have to say to the above: David, David, David, David/David/David/David (The Medley), David, David-tied-with-Eva-Cassidy, David, and David!
When it comes to covers, I have yet to use the word Archudisappoint. Keeping in theme with the Winter Olympics, I would have to say that if music were a sport David would be a gold medalist, as dominant as the Soviet Union before Glasnost.
The one exception for me where David did not match a previous artist was “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” But come on, JUDY?!? I rest my case.
ETA: I have to declare my love for David’s take on “Gotta Be.” His attack on those words is very, well, masculine
and is David at his uber-sexiest.
Ronald: I grant you the tie with Eva Cassidy on FOG and the “close” for Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, ONLY with Judy. Everyone else he and Judy are far above
Great post!

Jennifer: I love the calendar! I’ve had it open to the first month, March, since I got it. I love the sentiments at the top of each page. For March it says,

And, of course, (gah) David’s pictures
Congrats on the great response to your calendar, JenniferB! So much effort and creativity and talent in this fanbase.
Fellow TDC Comrades: can I have a favor, por favor? I know that there’s a CD floating around out there of best audio from the Christmas tour, but is there a listing of best videos?
(Btw, I’ve taken note of the videos above that are from the Christmas tour)
The reason I ask is that a very good friend of mine has NOT been following David for several months, even though his ODD is just as bad as many of ours, but it occurs in phases (they tend to coincide with the times when I push David on him lol). He’s somewhat of a recluse, has no internet, etc. I’ve burned him 4 DVDs already of video highlights from David’s career, going all the way up to June 2009 when David covered Bubbly.
He has not been following David since, and he has not yet heard Contigo!! And he hasn’t heard CFTH yet. You can imagine my Archuexcitement looking forward to watching the disc with him! And I know you’re all asking: what kind of fan is he? But he also obsesses about a lot of other artists, and classical music too.
VERMEER -- thanks for bringing the twitvid of David’s impromptu performance with Hodges etc, the CRUSH writers in the other thread. But am posting my comment here in keeping with the retro theme.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

You know, this is just a neat little pop song but in this version -- with him at helm -- gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. David managed to gobsmacked me again and again.
Here is a pic to go with it so you can appreciate why he said what he said during his spiel LOL!
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zmz2mgkgggz
He is just soooooooooooooooo good here. The ending … wow.
Listen.now. gooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Yes,my username is Bubbly because at that time I loved the song and I couldn’t log in with my old name, but everything change big time when he sang the Riddle,oh what a beautiful arrangement he did.
It is a different rhythm, a lot of falsettos, something that make me feel “good” like David would said.lol
Ricardo Montaner, the Spanish singer fell in love with David’s singing and gave him “his blessing to cover any of his songs”.
Anyway, thanks TDC adm.for keeping the site alive ,so the un-skilled writers(me) can continue enjoying everybody else comments.

Hi bubbly! I think I’ve seen your name before here, right? Welcome!
Thanks janey! I’ll go check those out…
Another example of TGFDA (Thank Goodness for David Archuleta). David’s been getting a lot of mention in the press lately, if only to contrast his version of “Apologize” to Idol hopeful Tim Urban’s.
I’m warning you, if you don’t like watching a train wreck, don’t watch it. Otherwise, if you’re like me then go right ahead.
I felt sorry for Tim while watching this on Idol. Of course, my ears were used to hearing David sing it, so there was no contest, and a train wreck describes it well. But the thing I noticed about Tim was that his phrasing made this song sound like a lounge version. Nothing smooth or heartfelt about it.
Ronald #26: Ouch!
Re. that #26 Apologize, train wreck indeed. I feel bad for admitting that I actually laughed during his performance. He does have that 1970′s, David Cassidy look going for him though.
desertrat -- I agree that he is sweet looking. But gah… then you have to listen to him sing. LOL!
davidfanLIZ #28, hehe!
