Think of Me: Studio Version
From the NotingDavid Archives

[audio:http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/audio/Think_of_Me.mp3]
I haven’t written much about the studio recordings because for the most part I don’t really like them. They rotate the kids through the studio as quickly as they can and it always sounds it. The cuts from a technical standpoint are generally professional (although some of my audio engineering colleagues have even questioned that aspect), but they invariably feel rushed and incomplete from an artistic standpoint. You can’t really win with this Idol set up: The live performances are better but too brief, while the studio performances are longer but fall far short of their potential.
In David’s case, my feeling has always been that he just hasn’t had the benefit of the right studio producer, one who knows what he’s capable of and how to get it. The energy of a live audience is enough to drive the dynamics of his performance into a realm of intensity that he has yet to achieve in the studio. David’s current tendency seems to be to “lay back into the lovely,” with his instrument, and although possibly a wise tactic in the midst of a long competition where vocal stress is a constant risk, it nevertheless compromises his power in the studio; on the bigger songs especially.
What we hadn’t really had until Think if Me was a song of such intimacy that David’s current studio tendencies really pay off. It was difficult at first to get past the insanely sentimental arrangement–complete with overdone glissandos, sappy violins, and a freakin’ harp for God’s sakes (I think a hiring criterion for American Idol arrangers must be a predilection for extra cheese)–but gradually I was able to appreciate what David himself had accomplished with this one, and it is quite remarkable.
His voice has never sounded better. Clear, rich, resonant, and in a strange way both round and sharp. There isn’t a hint of labor in this performance. Like Fred Astaire, whose legendary commitment to practice and craft made his flawless performances seem so utterly effortless, David sings as though a pure conduit for the plaintive heart of the song. He channels the music more than he performs it.
Ironically, though perhaps not surprisingly, David’s musical crafting is much smarter than the arrangement. The sophistication of his musical intelligence might be most evident in the melodic variations from “imagine me, trying too hard…” (at 1:43) through to “…think of those things we’ll never do…” (2:01). With all the riffing and melisma going on in popular music today, it is extremely challenging to come up with unexpected choices, but David does it with an unerring ear for restraint.
I was gratified to learn in a recent interview with Dean Kaelin, David’s voice coach, that David and his team were not terribly thrilled with the arrangement, either. They had apparently been lobbying for a jazzier, more contemporary treatment. Doesn’t surprise me in the least, and gives me hope that when the industry gets a hold of him, that he won’t capitulate his instincts to their greed. David must have had at least some impact on the ultimate approach used for the live performance (which comes after the studio recording in the weekly production sequence), because Tuesday night’s arrangement was perceptibly less saccharine than the studio version (note the dissonance added to the guitar intro for starters).
It’s incredibly easy to go overboard with R&B-rooted genre stylings but David never does (even despite encouragements in that direction from notable producers like Randy Jackson). David has what so many gifted entertainers often lack: taste. I’m convinced this is the reason that his detractors find him “boring.” These are the same people who find boring the sumptuously subtle in any artistic form. These are the people, God bless them, who don’t even notice something unless it’s completely over-the-top. There is plenty of bombast in American popular entertainment today. I’ll take my David Archuleta without all the extras, thanks.

dafan4ever: I´m sure we´re not the only ones to love “Let me go”
But I really don´t get why it hasn´t gotten more attention. I do get, however, that it could´t be on David´s first album, since it would´ve stood out as “separate”, since the songs are meant to create a continuum and “Let me go” just doesn´t fit in there. But it totally should´ve been on the iTunes Fanpack
I kinda hope David´s upcoming album will have songs like that. In the recent interviews David has shown his feisty side, and I really think it will show through his new music as well.
For some reason I cannot fathom, I didn’t buy the studio version of this. I have wanted an MP3 of this song on my iPod for the longest time. Anyone know of a place where that might be found?
When You Believe and Smoky Mountain Memories are two other studio versions that I quite enjoy, still.
Hope you don’t mind if I re-post this from the previous thread. Didn’t realize a new one is incoming

During this drought, I go back to reviewing Archie vids I have not seen at least 2x LOL
Otherwise I rely on my chill-out piano or acoustic collection. I’d like to share one that has been on repeat:
FIELDS OF GOLD by KEVIN KERN on PIANO
http://www.mediafire.com/?qgmtejj3zwm
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Funny thing is, this is instrumental but for every tinkle & clink of the ivories, I feel David’s voice. My heart rides the waves of the melody leaving me smiling, relaxed and contended. Then, in the more emotional parts, I hear each note caressed by David’s voice. And that’s when I miss him the most…
Happy Easter everyone!
Thanks to ArchuletaFanScene for sharing this rare footage of David singing “IMAGINE at the Wellington, Florida Boys & Girls Club on May 17th, 2004. David was 13 years old. Sorry for the poor quality. The original is on VHS and I filmed it from my TV with a webcam so I could share it on YouTube”
I used to own an internet cafe cum video rental shop and I used to transfer from VHS to CD. Let me see if I can still remember how to do it …
I never had strong feelings for D’s “Think of Me” and “Another Day in Paradise” performances. Maybe it was the musical arrangements and not so much the vocals. Anyhoo, I love how David “channels music” and conveys a message without going over the top (e.g., his solos in “Somos El Mondo”.
Everyone, have a wonderful and peaceful Sunday!
Anyone from Utah or near Utah here? These were posted over at Snarkies:

Oh gosh oh gosh oh gosh!! Idolsnow tweeted this:
Which former finalist is returning to Idol Wednesday night to sing a Lennon-McCartney song? We´re sworn to secrecy at the moment.
*Caps-alert*
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND PURE (and that´s obviously David lol) LET IT BE DAVID!!!!!!
According to the comments at Snarkies, the definition of a finalist is “a contestant in the final session of a competition”, so it has to be someone from top 2 right? RIGHT??
EMBE, honey… breathe…
LOL! Embe, I’m with you. Wouldn’t that just be fabulous!!! I’m thinking, “Imagine.”
jackryan4da: Are you somehow implying that I might be a tad over excited? Shame on you. I was merely expressing my opinion on David Archuleta performing on American Idol. It´s all the same to me really. I just think some people might appreciate seeing him on live television after months of drought. Not me though.
*Did anyone buy that?*
Oh, why do I have this idea that it is David Cook appearing this week.
And no embe, no one bought that lol!!!!
“It’s all the same to me really.” LOLOLOL!
Has it really been almost 2 (TWO!!!) years since this performance? I must have watched this Today Show clip a kazillion times. This kid is soooo sweet! Watch for his smile at the end, and the effortless warmth of his voice. Sigh….
@IdolsNow started a Twitter frenzy tonight when they tweeted the following:
Which former finalist is returning to Idol Wednesday night to sing a Lennon-McCartney song? We’re sworn to secrecy at the moment.
We wish we could announce this Wednesday’s Idol guest but we were told in confidence. Til Fox makes the announcement, we have to refrain…
Followed by these hints:
IT’S SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN WATCHING “AMERICAN IDOL” SINCE SEASON 1.
It’s someone who has been interviewed by IdolsNow’s Fred Bronson.
It’s someone with at least two vowels in their last name (maybe more).
Not female
Not from Season 1 & 3
Errr, Daughtry? Aiken? Lambert?
Ok, ok, I’ll stop before EMBE gives me the ArchuGrowl
Hmmm, this could be good! Certainly David has been watching since Season 1 -- he even sang for the Season 1 contestants. And…wasn’t there another hint?
“This person has either a first or last name that has an “A” as the first or second letter.”
Marlie, unfortunately Adam Lambert also fits the bill. I just hope that nobody attempts to sing Imagine, if David ain’t guesting.
Cos that will make me scream Marlie, oh heck!
Oh shoot. Well, since no one believed me anyway, I´ll just let it all out.
OH MY GOD IT HAS TO BE DAVID BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN WATCHING IDOL SINCE SEASON ONE AND I JUST DID A GOOGLE SEARCH AND FRED BRONSON INTERVIEWED DAVID EARLIER THIS YEAR!!!! AND COOK HAS ALREADY PERFORMED THIS SEASON! I´M SO FRIGGIN EXCITED I HAVE TO GO DIVE IN THE SNOW IN MY BACKYARD!!
Oh, it seems I might have been a bit OTT, ´cause I didn´t mean Fred Bronson interviewed David this year
I meant David´s season of course.
Now many are starting to believe it´s Clay Aiken that´s gonna be performing
But I googled “Clay Aiken Fred Bronson interview” and it doesn´t seem as though they have done an interview… but maybe I was just careless with my searching since I SO WANT IT TO BE DAVID <3
As Rince25 over at idf states “19 is not David’s friend.” I’m not seeing AI doing David any favors.
19 has been promoting Adam like crazy, Fred Bronson has interviewed Adam and Adam is getting ready to release a new single. Unfortunately, my head says the special guest is Adam Lambert though my heart wishes for David.
Good news out of this though is hopefully David will appear on AI when he is ready to release his new single.
Sorry, should have added this on the previous post.
Out of Aiken and Lambert, I’ll take Aiken.
I think he’d make a much better mentor and he’s got a new album out & is getting ready to tour again.
Now I’m spamming.
Another possible hint is that the person is not from season 8, so it can’t be Adam. Ok, I’m now done with this game and I’m going to bed. Goodnight everyone.
That leaves Clay & David!
Be still my heart.
Oh lord. I just found this, and I cannot believe what I´m hearing at 1:34. I mean, David isn´t even aware that he´s being filmed and he does a run sooo amazing that my ears need a cigarette.
embe,
I wonder if “ear smoking” would qualify as a set-back for me…after 30+ years, and numerous attempts at quitting, I had my last smoke November 11, 2008! (just couldn’t have one and feel “right” when listening to Davids new CD!)
P.S. And who said ODD was a BAD thing? LOL!
JR4DA #22,
Well that got me out of lurkdom!
All the blogs and tweets aflutter about David POSSIBLY singing this week on AI has fueled my curiosity about the other candidates, and your zeroing in on Clay and David made me Google and Wikipedia Clay’s credentials. I had been curious about him since Fantasia’s season because of all the hype about him (runner-up doing better than the winner at the charts). Well, here are some random stuff I found out:
I’m with Embe: there is no article or reference that Fred Bronson interviewed Clay Aiken. (One point for David!)
MJsBigBlog hinted that the finalist will be coming out with an album soon. Clay’s 7th studio album “Tried and True” is dropping this June 1st, the same day David launches his book. But we all know David is working on his next album, but no official launch date yet. (A tie!)
A point going for Clay is that AI is promoting his tour with Ruben Studdard who guested last week. It is quite rational they would ask him to guest as well.
I was amazed that Clay also came out with his own memoir a year after his AI stint in 2003, and then had 2 hit Christmas albums as well. His string of chart-topping successes and the body of work he has done with the UN are pretty impressive. It’s the kind of career that I was envisioning for David before I even read about it. Moreover, my dream of David doing his Christmas concert tour with the local symphonic orchestra of every venue city has already been done by Clay!
I also tried to find out if Clay ever did a Beatles song for him to be considered for the Lennon-McCartney week. Well, he did “Here, There and Everywhere” in his season finale. (Another tie!)
Anyway, the only hint that doesn’t seem to be in Clay’s favor is that the A in his name isn’t the second letter. David’s name surely fits the bill! (Two points for David!)
Btw, MJ (of MJsBigBlog) also thinks it’s our David! She’s not in the know, but it just feels good she’s on our side, he he!
And then, another thing to think about is David’s silence despite all the inquiring tweets to him. He has no tweet for the day so far. Is he also being sworn to secrecy? Is he going to surprise us?
What are the odds? I’m getting tingly just thinking about it!
EMBE/ASCPHIL -- Bronson interviewed Clay once for “The Billboard Book of #1 Hits” See below:
Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0823076776, Paperback)
Before MTV and VH1, before books with “Stories Behind the Songs” of popular recording artists, there were Fred Bronson’s stories behind the top chart hits. Now in its 5th Edition, The Billboard Book of Number One Hits -- revised, expanded, and completely updated -- once again provides the inside scoop behind every song to reach the pinnacle of the best-known, most respected record chart in the world, Billboard’s Hot 100.
The ultimate music reference source for all pop music fans, the book offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of every song to reach the top of the chart since 1955. Entries include interesting anecdotes from the artists, songwriters, producers, and label executives responsible for creating the hit, as well as a brief history of the song in relation to the artist’s career, plus the record label and number, the songwriter and producer, and the chart entry date, chart entry position, date the song reached the number one position, and the number of weeks on the chart.
Also included with each entry is a listing of the top five hits the week that each song reached the top spot, as well as pop appendices such as “Debuts at Number One,” “The Biggest Jumps to Number One,” “The Biggest Falls from Number One,” “The Most Number Ones,” “The Most Weeks at Number One,” and “The Longest Chart Spans of Number One Songs.”
Among the artists interviewed in the new edition are Clay Aiken, Ashanti, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Nelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Beyonce Knowles, Enrique Iglesias, Ja Rule, Shaggy, Britney Spears, and Usher.
Incomparable and invaluable, the book the New York Times called a “treasure trove of pop lore” just got better.
“Bronson interviewed Clay once for `The Billboard Book of #1 Hits´”
OF COURSE HE DID. That bastard.
*sigh*
Well, I´m still choosing to believe it´s gonna be David.
ascphil: I think David hasn´t tweeted anything because it´s the Easter weekend, and he doesn´t tweet on Sundays either, so maybe it´s a religious thing
OR MAYBE HE IS JUST SO EXCITED TO PERFORM ON WEDNESDAY THAT HE DOESN´T DARE TO TWEET ANYTHING IN FEAR OF BLURTING OUT ANY SECRETS!!!
Sorry again about the caps -- I really need to calm down here.
I think Clay is still persona con grata at AI. Remember he sued successfully Fuller management to be released from his contract and I believe since then never invited to appear at AI. Jason Castro is being considered at FOD.
opss, persona non grata. This is what I get for trying to be sophisticated as you all are here.
rekrul: Well obviously your comment about sophistication wasn´t targeted towards me LOL
I won´t ever try to be sophisticated because I am not, and any effort to be like that will only result to me looking like a phony, which I am also not.
And I think even with that little typo your point came across very well
By the way, I sent an email to Dean Kaelin. I don´t know why -- all this text just started coming out of me and I typed and typed without even thinking (or re-reading) any of it. Here´s an excerpt of the email if anyone wants to read it.
“I had watched AI from season 5, but none of the contestants blew me away like David did. One of the reasons that he had such a strong impact on me was probably the fact that I lost my mom at the end of March, 2008. She battled colon-cancer for three years and all I could do was watch her slowly fade away in front of my eyes. I tried to be strong in her presence, because I didn´t want my last moments with her to be wasted on me crying. But something broke inside me. I´m traumatized for life by what I witnessed my strong, brave mom go through during those three years. I will never say she “lost” the battle against cancer -- if anything, SHE WON. The illness didn´t break her spirit, it didn´t affect her mind and the way she handled the limitations the illness brought on her path was truly incredible. I still cannot believe her courage and I will always continue to tell people what an amazing woman my mom was. She died at the age of 49, just 10 days after her birthday.
As the cancer started taking it’s toll on all of us -- mom, me, my big-brother, my dad, my mom’s mom, all of our relatives and friends -- I had to find a place in my mind where I could hide. A place where I didn´t have to remember my mom being sick, a place to pretend. I couldn´t hide my feelings in our family; we´re such a close bunch, it´s impossible to pretend without someone noticing it. So I wanted to find a way to escape the cruel reality. Often times it would be the gym, where I would train so hard my muscles we´re crying for help -- I channelled the pain in my heart towards my body.
But then I started watching season 7 of American Idol. At first there was nothing special about it, after all I had seen the goofy auditions and the African-American women with the big voices. Those were a given in every season. But then I saw this young man with black hair and a nice tan explaining something about paralyzed vocal chords. And he made me paralyze with amazement. Each week I was looking forward to seeing him and each week he helped me escape the pain that was haunting me where ever I went.
When David sang “Heaven”….. wow. I couldn´t believe how effortlesly he did all those runs, which I take pride in in my own singing. Finnish singers don´t do those. And I had always disliked Finnish music. I listened to groups like Sugababes, Backstreet Boys, Evanescence, Maroon 5 -- each very different from eachother, but all had one thing in common; unique voices. Voices that you recognise. Voices that are bendy; that can do runs. Finnish singers don´t take risks like that. And when they do, it sounds very stiff and rehearsed. So I loved singers who added a little somethin’ somethin’ to their vocals.
But none of my former favourite stars were like David. He was 16 and his voice was like water; it swirled around obstacles, flowing with ease and every sudden movement just melted together, the continuous flow never breaking. I will never forget it, and since then I have found comfort whenever I hear David’s voice, whether he´s singing or speaking, even. He glows purity.”
I´m sorry if that came off as boring -- in all honesty I think I wrote that to help myself, you know, to get my thoughts in order.
embe: I can’t tell you how many stories we hear of people in great sadness or going through something really hard, as you did, who say that they discovered David and he eased that pain for a while, and for some, he helped them turn their lives completely around. Your story brought tears to my eyes, as have so many here who have shared what David was able to do for their heart and soul. Thanks for posting part of your letter.
embe: So sorry for your loss. Hugs to you. I think many people who are going through hard times are comforted by David. He heals us with his voice.
Here’s some GOOD NEWS! : David is going to perform “Imagine” on AI on Wednesday. Just announced on Snarkys. YEA!!!!!!
Here’s a link: http://www.americanidol.com/news/view/pid/2888/?ref=socialmedia_2010_04_05_ThisWeekOnIdol
I sure hope they let him sing the whole song this time. I just can’t wait!!!
JR4DA #26,
That was like calling me and Embe back to earth from a momentary case of zero gravity. I should always remember to refer to you when looking for the right data on the internet.
Rekrul #28,
Ooh, I overlooked that fact, so thanks for the reminder. Clay used to be featured in almost every AI season, so I noticed that, too. But Jason Castro? Hmm.
Embe #31,
That was a beautiful email to Dean Kaelin. And that was just an excerpt? Wow, that wasn’t boring AT ALL. I especially loved this:
“But none of my former favourite stars were like David.
That is the first time I’ve read anyone describe David’s voice that way. It could be the reason why I never tire of listening to him. I’ve been trying to wean myself away from my ODD, hoping that it’s just a phase in my adult life. I even got interested in AI9 this time after being totally uninterested in AI8 last year, even if the talents are not as good as during David’s season. But all the references to David lately have ignited my fangirliness all over again. I’ve purposefully listened to previous favorites and then to new ones, but they don’t have the addictive quality of David’s voice. He has that comforting and cleansing purity in his singing and speaking voice that you just want to wrap yourself with in both your waking and sleeping hours. I keep coming back to him for that incomparable feeling of lightness.
Embe, I’ve been seeing your posts in various David sites and I really admire your open spirit. Writing about David has been very therapeutic for me, as well as reading about him from others who express themselves very well. You go, girl!
NEWS FLASH!!!
(Maybe I need to be more obvious!)
NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DAVID TO PERFORM ON AI WEDNESDAY: “IMAGINE” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HERE’S THE LINK!! http://www.americanidol.com/news/view/pid/2888/?ref=socialmedia_2010_04_05_ThisWeekOnIdol
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!
I’m flailing and spazzing and ggaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!
Oh what a beautiful morrrniiiinnng !!! Oh what a beautiful dayyyyy!!!! I’ll be watching David this week on tv, finally!!!
(Sorry for all the exclamation points. I can’t help myself. Eeek!)
Wooooot!!!!!
HopeUDance 2 -- thanks for bringing the good news over here!
So everyone here just fainted?
Am thinking AI is surely desperate for ratings for them to make a big hulabaloo about David’s guesting. They didn’t do that to other AI alums, right?
Either that or they studied ODD very well LOL.
Also, thank goodness they chucked the group singing. If they will only lipsync the performance in a singing competition, why even bother?
EMBE/ASCPHIL -- you both so beautifully express what you feel and what’s on your mind. Ever consider writing for a full length article here in TDC?
Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!
marlie7: Thank you so much for your kind words. You are a sweetheart, really. I´ve read your posts in many places and you come off as a genuine, good person. Your comment felt like a hug.
HopeUDance: Yes, I´ve always said that David should sit on a shelf at the pharmacy, because he is like medicine. And thanks for your virtual hug <3
ascphil: Wow, your post was so filled with kindess I don´t know what to say. Thank you. And yes, I am a very open person, with a sick sense of humour, which comes across the wrong way sometimes, especially in written form
But Finnish people have that kind of sense of humour, and it has surprised me how some have taken stuff I´ve said so seriously, because in real life me and my family/friends talk like that and nobody ever takes it seriously. Anyways, my point is that it is very nice to see that you have that opinion about me, though I don´t think there´s anything to admire in me
But thank you.
jackryan4da: Oh gosh, I´ve never thought about that, since all the articles on TDC just ooze intelligence and just pure brilliance, and I don´t think I fit in that well lol. But I like to write, yeah, and if someone wants to read something written by me, then I´d be honoured to do it.
And now for the compulsory spazzing.
HOLY LORDY ALLMIGHTY!!! I TOLD YOU, I TOOOLD YOU IT WAS OUR DAVID!! WHO´S THE SHERLOCK NOW!! GAH I CANNOT WAIT!! I´M SO EXCITED MY EYEBALL POPPED OUT!!
Goodness gracious!
Wednesday FTW!!!!!
JR4DA #39,
You’re so kind to ask and the flattery might get you somewhere.
Embe #40,
You’re welcome, my dear. You just don’t know how your ‘sick’ humor always manages to make me laugh out loud in the privacy of my room. On the other hand, your thoughtful posts conjure rich images in my mind. It is a joy to read them repeatedly.
And… I KNOW, I KNOW! WE KNEW, DIDN’T WE! (holds your hands jumping about in a happy dance!)
P.S. But why does it seem we’re the only ones gleefully spazzing after all this talk of an Archudrought? David is going on national (global) TV again after a long time. What’s up with the one-liners?
ascphil: One-liners? Do you mean one line comments here? I actually was speechless other than that scream I left. You know, screaming is equivalent to about a paragraph in writing.
I am actually jumping up and down and making myself a little crazy with anticipation. It does truly seem so long since we’ve seen a new video never mind a LIVE performance by David. I already told my husband -- don’t bug me tomorrow night for any reason. And I’m watching on the big-screen TV, so don’t think any basketball game will have any impact on who gets to hog the good TV. Done!
ascphil: “You’re welcome, my dear. You just don’t know how your ’sick’ humor always manages to make me laugh out loud in the privacy of my room. On the other hand, your thoughtful posts conjure rich images in my mind. It is a joy to read them repeatedly.”
You have no idea how wide my smile is right now, after reading that. That is a huge compliment. Thank you. By the way, may I inquire where you have read my posts? Other than TDC of course. I just post in so many places I tend to forget what I have written and where
And I´m sooooo jumping with you!! I don´t get the one-liners either -- I figured people are probably experiencing spasms, laying in a fetal position somewhere so they can´t type. I mean, it´s like when you haven´t eaten anything for days, and then you eat too much all of a sudden and your stomach hurts. Well, maybe after this Archu-silence David performing TOMORROW is just too much for our system to take.
Shame on you David. You should´ve eased yourself back into the spotlight little by little -- not attack us so suddenly! I, for one, had to schedule a fitting for a straitjacket after such overwhelming news. Turns out, I wear a ‘small’ by the way.
Ascphil, believe me, I am spazzing too! My one-liner is me wanting to be heard while not having a whole lot more to say lol. Admittedly, my ODD comes and goes in phases like the moon, but I assure you this Wednesday night after his performance I will be glued to the set!! (My eyes, that is. Oh, and I mean that metaphorically, too.)
Hi Embe,
Like everyone else here, I am amazed at your beautiful, beautiful description of David’s vocal quality -- his voice was like water; it swirled around obstacles, flowing with ease and every sudden movement just melted together, the continuous flow never breaking.
It is a huge reason we are addicted to his voice. Your words simply describe what we have been hearing all this time but could not put into words. I am glad it brought you comfort in your time of grief.

Oh, geez, I’m voting on this thing… what comes over me when David’s name is on a ballot?
