Something ‘Bout David
The Archuletor Goes Meta

The only adviser David will ever need is his own ear.
I don’t know whether this song will hit or not, no one does; it doesn’t matter. It very well could, and it should, but it doesn’t matter. With this frothy, jumpy, deceptively edgy single, David proves his seriousness as a pop craftsman, in range of best-of-breed targets from Abba to Michael Jackson. And I’m not even talking about the performance. David has gone meta.
Despite the overly glossy producer polish, inevitably aggravating those of us who hunger for The Voice (autotune? really?), this feels like more of a David Archuleta production than we’ve had so far in this category. It is interesting that a faction of the fan base are claiming that it “doesn’t sound like a David song,” because I would argue that it actually sounds more like how a pure-pop David Archuleta song should probably sound than any previous production has. No, this is not Salt Lake City soul, or boy balladeer, but it is more successful on its own terms than anything he has previously offered in this genre. David is letting us see just how clever he can be in this game, and he’s not even using his most obvious talents to do it. Oh David, you phenom, you.
Certainly the skills of co-producers Sam Hollander and Dave Katz, with their slick interpretations of emo declarations, offer a uniquely appropriate fit with David’s own sensibilities, and David himself may have capitulated to his more commercial inclinations (nothing wrong with that), but I detect more of David in the mix this time, and not just from the standpoint of singer. You can feel a deeper comfort level, a stronger confidence in the material. Indeed, careful observation of David’s notoriously inscrutable tweets suggest important advances in his role as leader, not just collaborator. This is terribly exciting, especially when the results are so on-the-mark without being completely on-the-nose.
And therein lies the Archuleta genius that is beginning to emerge in his pure-pop confections. There is that strange but unmistakable coolness, something not quite sunny, even in the midst of all the celebration. David knows that emphasizing the brightwork requires shadows. This underlying sense of gravity is becoming an Archuleta trademark; that hint of pathos that David has always had in his favor, and which keeps him from becoming too diaphanous. For as fey as his style may sometimes seem (and for which which many of us treasure him), he is no lightweight. Even in the creamiest of commercial fare David never loses touch with the ground, with the source of the soul. I think that’s where the jumping thing comes from; the Zero Gravity experience is clearly baked into this piece.
The difference here, the evolution of The Archuletor in this instance, is that he is now experimenting with this rich juxtaposition in aspects of music-making other than his voice. The dimensions of David’s own musical intelligence are quite evident in Something ‘Bout Love, from pop prince to soul diva to Texas two-step, all wrapped up neatly and smart in one summery bubble that should bounce awfully easily out of cars and convenience stores all summer long. This is one impressive piece of commercial cargo, and I strongly suspect it is so not because David has succumbed to the likes of Sam and Sluggo, but because he has expanded his role as helmsman of his own work.

Love this post!! Thanks Rascal
Oh and I agree David is the helmsman of his life and his work.
Love this song!
Thank you Rascal for a wonderful review! “There is that strange but unmistakable coolness, something not quite sunny, even in the midst of all the celebration. David knows that emphasizing the brightwork requires shadows. This underlying sense of gravity is becoming an Archuleta trademark; that hint of pathos that David has always had in his favor”
Thanks for your review, Rascal! Lots to think about here. I cannot wait to see where this song goes.
Yup. Spot on. Exactly what I thought albeit far better expressed than I might be able to muster. There are so many layers to this clever kid/guy/artist/genius that it’s a full time job just to appreciate him. And I do. thanks rascal.
Rascal Absolutely love your post!
Haven’t posted a comment here in such a long while but felt I just had to because I feel so strong about what you have written! Thank you and agree with all of it (ok I don’t understand some of it but it sounds good) and glad to see the same basic feel around in many other places too!
David is growing up in so many ways… wonderfully so and can’t wait to hear the rest of what he has in store for us!
That being said….. I LOVE ‘SOMETHING ‘BOUT LOVE’! Oh… and right from the start!
So much to be said about David -- and you say it best, Rascal. This:
You can feel a deeper comfort level, a stronger confidence in the material. Indeed, careful observation of David’s notoriously inscrutable reports suggest important advances in his role as leader, not just collaborator.
“the hint of pathos“
You took the words out of my mouth. The phrase perfectly describes that thing I keep feeling every time I listen to his voice, even with, or perhaps I should say, most esp with such pieces as SBL.
There is that unmistakable tug in David’s voice that glues a listener to his calling; an inescapable, undeniable siren that commands one’s attention -- both mind and heart.
NEONLIGHT’s latest article on David and on SBL points to a commonly shared observation among those who sampled SBL in the last 2 days:
“David Archuleta wants to tell you a little something about love.
In his new single, titled Something ‘Bout Love, the American Idol standout uses a pulsating beat, radio ready synths and his amazingly sweet voice to break down the joys and sometimes troubles of the big L word.
The tune is a step into a more commercial arena for Archie but don’t let that deter you from listening. Although the beat of the song will have you moving, the lyrics give the song substance–substance that is sorely missing from most songs in heavy rotation on the radio currently.
Something ‘Bout Love is the lead single from David’s as-yet-untitled new album, set for a September release.”
At this time when a hit can subsist on 1 or 2 lines repeated throughout the 2-3 minute run of a song, I applaud David’s persistence in keeping his love affair with lyrics. This, while making an effort to be relevant in today’s maddening pop scene.
Now I wonder how many minutes/seconds did it take for you Rascal to start moving & grooving to SBL
These are great observations, contained in a beautiful piece of writing. I’m headed out the door and need to reread and fully digest this later, but I just wanted to thank you Rascal for this great article!
Just played it again cranked up to the heavens (hope the neighbors enjoyed it!) and if anyone can do that and not dance on the spot they need their pulse taken. It truly “sets you free”.
Even in the creamiest of commercial fare David never loses touch with the ground, with the source of the soul. I think that’s where the jumping thing comes from; the Zero Gravity experience is clearly baked into this piece.
And this, Rascal, is what makes your voice on The VOICE such a treasure in Archuworld. You just know how to sum up our boy/man in the most delicious words imaginable.
I definitely detect ZG in the song (especially in the intro), and I fully agree that, even amidst the bubble-gum pop, there is something far more nutritious being offered in the taste.
Great single review!
Here’s a review from Blogcritics.org:
Starting this week the new single from David Archuleta’s highly anticipated sophomore album is streaming exclusively on his website.
“Something ‘Bout Love” is very different from any of the music on Archuleta’s 2008 self-titled debut album. The song itself is still very much a pop song, but it also have a dance vibe, which definitely is a nice surprise.
Archuleta’s first album was very much made up of straight-up pop, mid-tempo songs and ballads. Both of these types of songs suit his voice very well. “Something ‘Bout Love” is definitely a departure from that. It is refreshing to hear that he is taking the pop sounds that works for him and is kicking it up a notch.
This new single shows that Archuleta has done a lot of growing up since being the runner-up to David Cook during the seventh season of American Idol. If this first single is any indication of what is to come on Archuleta’s upcoming album, I think his fans are probably in for a real treat.
What I appreciate about the song and about Archuleta’s music in general, is that it is very much age appropriate. Here is a 19-year-old guy singing about love, but at a level where the lyrics are not overtly sexual, like a lot of the pop music on the radio today.
“Something ‘Bout Love” should do well on the music charts. Archuleta’s 2008 debut single, “Crush” was an instant smash hitting #1 on the Digital Charts and #2 on the Hot 100. His album debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts.
Archuleta’s “Something ‘Bout Love” will be available to download July 20 on iTunes. For more information on David Archuleta and to listen to his newest single, please visit his website.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article. A big fat thank you to you rascal! I am not articulate enough to even say what was so good to read and why. It just was. Not even gonna try. Loved the content and the delivery.
I am enjoying SBL so much too! Woot!
Great review! Ah so delectable. There is a lot to savor and digest. I am going to have to reread this many times. See I am not even sure what “meta” means. But it sounds right because anything meta has to be “more” of whatever and if its about David then it’s ALL GOOD.
Something ‘Bout Love has taken hold of me. Gonna blast it all weekend.
Hope everyone has a wonderful 4th of July!
This song is really growing on me! I listened to it on repeat today as I worked. It is fun, but has substance, too.
I wonder what news Jive(?) has in store for us, as the write-up mentioned on his site?
Speaking of which, nice to see his site updated. Things so far are being done very professionally.

I hope he gets to sing this during TCA.
I hope he makes the TV rounds
JIVE -- ball is in your court and you better not drop it!
Am betting that here in Manila, Sony BMG will hold a song and dance contest to promote SBL. Definitely cheeeeeeeeeeesy but heck, it works! RONALD -- you remember these types of promo -- bahahahahahaha
Wonderful article, thanks Rascal.
When I first heard SBL it hit me as pure bubblegum. (Don’t hurt me, remember, I’m not the learned music connoisseur here)
After repeated hearings of the song, I have been able to notice more substance to the song. The use of his lower registry, and lyrics are two of the examples. Don’t have the words to describe all the meaty juiciness this song has, but people here (Ron & Rascal to name a couple) help it make sense.
Great review Rascal. Who does not love a surprise. David continues to be full of them. Something bout love is modern and a throwback at the same time. I simply adore it. It feels like Christmas AM when you were expecting a laptop and an adorable puppy was waiting for you instead. (Fun and out of left field)
Love this line: “The dimensions of David’s own musical intelligence are quite evident in Something ‘Bout Love, from pop prince to soul diva to Texas two-step, all wrapped up neatly and smart in one summery bubble that should bounce awfully easily out of cars and convenience stores all summer long”
Thanks for all the kind comments, folks. HG, you flatter me (keep it up). I guess all I have to do is avoid management, marketing, PR, stuffed animals, and club attendance, and win smiles all around! (Ha ha, good luck.)
Something else that occurs to me is the rather astonishing fact that only two years ago, the skepticism ran deep regarding David’s ability to do pop music at all. Think about that! Now, here we are wondering if this type of material – so successful on its own terms – is too pop! Ha! The simple fact is that David is a musical genius and can succeed at whatever he sets his mind to. In your face, skeptics!
I also have to observe that my own personal hopes and interests regarding David’s musical direction run along different tracks entirely. I know he’ll get there, it’s just not time yet. But considering that bias, the fact that this material is so obviously, unavoidably accomplished is proof indeed of what a pro this kid is.
HG, you flatter me (keep it up).
Keep writing articles like this, and I most certainly will!
I like your mischief-making articles too, so I hope all the “kind comments” won’t force a change in a new direction.

…and Rascal -- did you happen to notice the build on David in that picture you selected? (Of course you did!)
Good god, is he trying to kill us with that exercise routine?
rascal, “In your face skeptics” is right! I still see some fans bring up David Foster on occasion and how he would know what to do with David, and I have to go major UGH as he said closer to the end of the AI Season that if David tried to sing pop, and I quote: “He would die a thousand death!” I’ll never forget that statement. I knew he was dead wrong then and of course now, thank you David for proving once and for all how utterly and miserably wrong some of these pros were.
Vermeer, when did David Foster say that?!
HG, during the idol season, DF was giving these short interviews assessing some of the contestants’ performances for the week, and in one of them, he said exactly that. I thought to myself how this guy completely does not get David.
I can try and see if I can track that down but unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the whatever it was; I saw it online but it must have been on TV.
Rascal, thanks for writing this article. It is clear that a lot of thought went into it, and it is a pleasure to read.
Regarding some of the more recent comments, I will say this: Perhaps I am taking a little TOO MUCH PLEASURE in seeing our David succeed WITHOUT help from David Foster, Oprah, and others! David doesn’t really need them.
HG, found it! To be fair, DF was right about David in other ways, but I don’t think he got him exactly, not the way fans do anyway
http://www.videosurf.com/video/%27idol%27-analysis-duel-of-the-davids-may-15-2008-30056339
DF first said “he will fail miserably”, but keep listening, he says what I quoted verbatim. Foolish!
David singing at the rehearsal, thanks to emilyluvsarchie:
olemr2001 — ah! chills! great recording
olemr2001: Thank you for that! Wow. He just …. THUD.
Vermeer: I just watched that interview with David Foster -- OMG. Even back then I think we all knew David A. had more in him for pop than THAT! Now, look at him go, go, go!
OLEM -- thank you for posting the rehearsa;l vid.
David’s voice is reaching that luscious deep tone. That low note on “say” used to be troublesome for him.
Goodness, can you imagime how sexier his voice will be 3 to 5 trs from now?
d.a.i.d.
Vermeer, thanks for sharing that video. Just…WOW!
But to be fair, after that performance of Chris Brown, very few people thought David could do “pop.” Just goes to show the format of American Idol doesn’t show off the genuine talents of their contestants.
I also think DF is a little disappointed he didn’t get his hands on him back then, so what do I know.

Okay, this thrills me:
David Archuleta and his co-stars for “A Capitol Fourth” — tomorrow’s July 4 celebration in D.C. — apparently spent part of today rehearsing near the nation’s capitol.

David’s new vlog! 4TH OF JULY!
He had a lot to say about the message of SBL, his tour of the museums, and his reflections on the signficance of the 4th of July. I must say he had some serious moments in this vlog. He wasn’t able to complete his ending of the vlog though.
Did David get a haircut?

JR: “Goodness, can you imagine how much sexier his voice will be 3 to 5 trs from now?”
But David can’t be sexy -- he’s a cherub, a pure, innocent fairy, a glowing halo above his head shining a golden light.

His little red, white & blue ensembles -- hee. Yes, by god, he sounds amazing.
PBS is great exposure for him.
PBS is excellent exposure for him, and A Capitol Fourth program is a very big deal!
I’ve seen some people on other blogs wondering why he doesn’t plug his new single at this event.
This of course is missing the point. With David singing the NA and a classic song like “Stand By Me,” David is marketing something much bigger than a single.
He’s marketing THE VOICE!
Can’t wait for the world to sit back in wonder… just like the rest of us!
HG: I’ve seen some people on other blogs wondering why he doesn’t plug his new single at this event.
This of course is missing the point.
YES! And how classy is it that he doesn’t plug his single?!! It just reeks of professionalism that he is focused on the day, the event, and the deeper meaning of why he is there. THE VOICE and the name will be remembered for this without the plugs.
HG — some people expect him to plug? LOL
2 words — priorities & decency
Both which David have tons of.
HG — some people expect him to plug? LOL
JR, I’ve seen this specifically at MJ’s Big Blog. The narrow-mindedness of some people, who can only think of music and such performances in the crassest of terms -- $$ promotion & profits -- knows no bounds.
What can I say? Some people, who’ve been watching Idol for too long, have learned the basest lessons from American culture rather than its highest ideals, like “priorities and decency”.
Happy July 4th everyone!
Oooh, I see a new feature, let me see how this works
Didn’t work Marlie. Am trying the insert the image thingy
JR -- yeah, we were trying to make it work this morning and Rascal is working on it. I’ll turn it off until it does work.
Hi Rascal, just gave the article a re-read.
A while back I wrote a feature about “She’s Not You” and suggested that he should venture into some deeper fare, and deliver those kinds of songs that can wow us, give us a soulquake, the kind of songs that he speaks of in his book that are transcendent and take you to another place.
And so when I heard SBL for the first time on David’s hotline, perhaps it was surprising that my immediate reaction was “OMG! This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for!”
Ha! Although it isn’t exactly what I had been writing about, this song screamed dance pop success to me. I can see this being a turning point of sorts for David’s career and the public’s recognition of him as a bona fide pop artist. But more than his popular success: upon listening to it more, I got more of the unmistakable sense that you write about here, Rascal, that there is more of David in this song.
I just listened to Crush again, and for some reason that’s hard to describe, that song, while a great pop song, felt more like David following a script. Most obviously, the lyrics of SBL are not of the simple boy-girl-I-think-I’m-in-love-with-you variety. But the sheer ENERGY, the jumpiness, David’s commanding and controlled delivery of the verses, that last chorus where David is belting it out (listen to those “background Davids!”
)… these suggest to me more of David’s pop sensibility… something unique, a new voice on the pop horizon.
And there’s a lot of creativity to be explored in that department which this song only begins to suggest. I’m excited by your reference to the “best of breeds” such as ABBA and Michael Jackson. Squee!
When one hears Edith Piaf sing, one can’t help but think: “Now that’s French. That’s the language as it should be spoken! She can sing about anger, love, about anything and equally move me.” We all know that David is crazy talented, but it never ceases to astonish me to see David’s facility to “speak the language” of music, whether the given subset of music be ballad, country, rock, or pop.
And I like where you start, Rascal -- this might be a hit, this might not be, “but it doesn’t matter.” Everything about this song tells me that the album is going to be vibrant and alive and brimming with the output of David’s musical brain.
Someone posted this on IDF – what a lovely recap by one of David’s background singers.
http://vanessa-ideasandimages.blogspot.com/2010/07/capitol-fourth-four-rehearsals.html
You should read this: VANESSA, one of the background singers from Capitol 4th blogged about David!
“I’m so impressed with the level of excellence I’ve experienced since being asked to participate in “A Capitol Fourth”. I’m especially impressed with the very polite, well-mannered, and delightful David Archuleta. No arrogance or swelled head with this young man. I’m also happy I had a chance to meet his mom, Lupe. It’s funny. All three of us background singers are old enough to be his mom! My own daughter is 10 years older than David. As old school as I am, it is SO refreshing that, in spite of his notoriety, he demonstrates such respect for his mom. That respect, then, carries over to everyone else he meets. He has been so gracious to all of us. God knows I can’t stand, and don’t have patience for bratty, smart-mouthed, disrespectful, kids who have been informed of their rights but not the responsibilities that go along with them. David is a breath of fresh air, and I pray that he doesn’t allow the trappings of fame to chip away at the standards that Lupe has clearly set. I can’t say it enough. Good home training goes a long way.
There have been four rehearsals. The first was on Thursday afternoon with Jerry Grossman on piano, and Jack Everly, conductor of the NSO. Lori, Vickie and I met David for the first time. We were given sheet music, and from the moment we all sang together, it was as if we were a musical family. We got suggestions from Mr. Everly concerning the end of the song, and he told David to take all the time he wanted.
…”
For the rest

I just LOVE it when people get David
Might be good to leave a comment on her blog
Ronald -- Very well said and I agree completely. You nailed it with your description of the difference between SBL and Crush. Crush is a terrific tune, and David was a great fit for it, but compared to SBL it sounds like something that was selected from a shelf labeled “premium pop for young singers.” The fact that SBL sounds so much more… authentic for David, and yet that it’s not necessarily the style we might expect from him (although I don’t necessarily know why not -- poppy euro dance with a hint of Mika and a dash of soul… need I say more?) proves that it is not, in fact, the style of the music that makes the difference regarding what is truly David, but whether David himself is really inside of it and in control of it.
I think we are really getting to a point, now, where David is starting to trust what he hears in is his head, and is working to get that into the recordings. And I suspect people in the industry are starting to trust him on that, too. Even to the point of encouraging him in it. (And, I think it must be said, that the elimination of one of his team who reportedly had a lot to say about such matters probably also contributed to the freedom necessary for David to shine in this direction). What we are seeing here is not just the evolution of a singer, or a performer, but of a full-on pop impresario. As always, David’s progress is incremental but unmistakable; I imagine he probably wasn’t even entirely certain of his own credentials as a pop craftsman until he went out and stomped on stages all over the world whipping crowds into a frenzy with things like Zero Gravity. “Dang,” I imagine him saying to himself, “I can do this!”
JR, I loved what Vanessa, the background singer wrote of her impressions of David as a person and an artist. I couldn’t however post a comment. Tried. Google hates me.
Happy Fourth to all!!
Hey Marlie, what happened to the hour markings/info? I noticed yesterday that it was gone, or is it me, on my end only kind of thing?
Ronald, what I feel from SBL is David’s “sheer ENERGY” too, his usual desire for that hopefulness in life! His message so to speak is so passionate. Most interesting to me is when he talked about SBL in his vlog yesterday, he brings up love as love in family relationships as an example, not the obvious boy-girl variety, though of course it covers that too. This is what I absolutely love about David, always something universal and deeper than just your most typical concept. But he does it in a relatable way and not cheesy preachy way.
Vermeer -- We made a bunch of long-overdue updates to the site software (I hope everyone has noticed how much faster the site is loading and behaving), and some of the comment elements we had originally added (time stamp and comment numbers) need to be re-added. Some of that, at least, will hopefully be done by the end of the weekend.
Ronald, your comments and Rascal’s responses make great reading!
Vermeer and Ronald, I certainly feel and love that “sheer ENERGY” of SBL, too. Perhaps what strikes me most about the song though is what a wonderful job it does of capturing David’s hopefulness.
Bravo, rascal! Great to see David’s not the only one in rare form and exceeding all expectations!
I’ve been listening to the song for a few days--wanted to let it work its way into my consciousness before reading too many comments. I must admit, I wasn’t too crazy about it at first (yeah, same ‘ol thoughts… what are they doing? I mean really… synthesizing that Voice?!)
But I realized the very next day that it was playing itself back to me in my head with no external prompting. How the heck does he create these ear worms?!!
Finally it’s hit me, what I’m so impressed with in this production… he actually used his distinctive breathy/raspy vocal chord characteristic and emphasized that in a way that melds perfectly with the synthesizing!! (I’m talking about after the intro, when he starts to sing the first verse.) One smart cookie that David Archuleta!
Now to catch up on comments…
Happy Independence Day, everyone!
Rascal, thank you for the update, and all the work! I do notice the faster loading
I did experience a few times in the past problems logging in but not lately.
olemr, I agree 1000%! It is sheer HOPEFULNESS!!
Quick drive-by:
Love the updates to the TDC site! (Merci à R and M!)
Love the new song!
Love the Rascal ruminations on the new song!
Love the red/white and blue/white ensembles! Super cute!
From DC on wheels, an interview with David backstage
This one, hot from the screen, David on Fox News thanks to OMgoshashley:
And again from Fox News an interview straight from the screen thanks to nareejo:
I’ve been trying to upload these vids but YT has been wonky for me the past 3 hours
Let’s hope I complete the vids soon -- it’s a pity cos they are HQ/HD
It’s been great to read other artists’ impressions of David’s rehearsals yesterday. From what little I know about the industry, if someone is a professional, nice person, and very talented, word gets around and people want to work with you. This program will be great exposure for him. Do you think that it’s about the largest audience he’s had yet?
Enjoying this thread!
Marlie & JR -- a couple of those vids posted above pop up with “private video” msg. and that I need to accept the sender’s friend request. Is it possible to see them anyway? I don’t see a way to “friend” the person. (Sorry I can’t give you comment #s of embedded vids.) One is “with full orchestra!” (Marlie) and the other is “Anthem” (JR msg., after embe’s photo link list.)

I discovered that SBL is prominently displayed in a French music blog.
“Ecoutez “Something ‘Bout Love” de David Archuleta

C’est un artiste que je connaissais pas du tout.”

Rascal, this review is awesome. I very much enjoyed reading what everyone has to say. SBL is the perfect “feel good” summer song, great hook terrific vibe…kinda like the BEP’s ‘I Gotta Feeling’ last summer.
Thanks olemr2001! I translated the brief text from the French music blog.

Ecoutez “Something ‘Bout Love” de David Archuleta. C’est mon coup de coeur du week-end.
Listen to SBL by David Archuleta. It’s my pick of the weekend.
C’est un artiste que je connaissais pas du tout. Il s’appelle David Archuleta, il était finaliste de la 7e édition d’American Idol.Sa chanson s’appelle “Something ‘Bout Love”.
This is an artist I don’t know anything about. His name is David Archuleta, he was a finalist on the 7th season of AI. His song is called SBL.

To listen, it’s super-simple, click “play.” Tell me what you think of this song.
Hello and Happy 4th David peeps!
Love this review. No more to say, cuz it said it all.
Totally in LOVE with SBL…since note 1.
This is random…but for me, first impression…it’s a combo of “My Hands” (which was my fav from day one on last cd and still…tho’ “favorite” is a word I don’t like to use) and Zero Gravity… on steroids. Sweeping, infectious, emotional melody and vocals, pulsating build and releases and then everything else that makes it pop perfection. It IS perfect.
It IS David.
and tonight.
Red, White, and Blue (“ensemb’es”) neva’ looked so good.
My heart overfloweth…he shined. (shown?) ..was awesome.
ps. glad u brought up the autotune question…I really wondered about that, but just figured…sign of the times.
Still. None needed…eva’, here.
amb4dja -- re the autotune, I even like the spoken line in the preview version over the one in his OS which sounded more robotic.
His spoken voice in the the preview version was deeper, probably why I like it more.
You are right highervibe, it sounds like David’s breathing sound is used at times as part of the syncopation (off beat) portions of the synthesized underlying track…genius!
Happy 4th!
Just an update on the CAPITOL FOURTH BLITZKRIEG am making, it is now up to 14 vids, plus 3 more uploading -- a short NBC clip, then SSB & SBM . Am sure cyberspace is awash with the last two already LOL
In case anyone is interested, here is the playlist:

But at the rate Twitter and the Capitol 4th is being covered, I think David is in for a whole lot of interviews yet!
It is interesting that the excitement generated by SBL comes at this auspicious time of commemorating independence. I suspect, David’s chosen direction based on the “entree” that he has offered for his sophomore pop album is largely due to a freer state of mind and body. He is more confident, less awkward (at times, LOL) but is more definitive & expressive in where he is at and where he wants to be. A little freedom indeed goes a long way.
The beauty of it all, David remains in essence, the David we have fallen in love with 2 years ago.
Exciting times ahead. Happy independence day indeed!
ps: My daughter who never cared for David and who kept on rolling her eyes with just a hint of approaching my favorite subject has some good words to say about SBL. She is a rocker and plays the drum. But since am her mom, she grew up in a rather eclectic musical environ. Yet she never warmed up to David, until SBL. Touch down!
JR -- “It is interesting that the excitement generated by SBL comes at this auspicious time of commemorating independence.”
Nice!! David’s own independence is decidedly evident in SBL, and even though he claims that the rest of the album is quite different, one can’t help but anticipate independence being a potential thread…
Here’s a nice video of both of David’s performances last night:
Thanks, JR!
Oh Marlie… oh my. That twin performance vid is… is… GAH! (I was out, and didn’t get to see the show last night, so thanks!
Here are some broadcast captures from the ever awesome thop1984:
Jimmy Smits and David Archuleta tour DC together:
“Of course they had more serious business to attend to in Washington during the weekend, but actor Jimmy Smits and singer David Archuleta were spotted at a lot of the typical touristy places, too — often checking out the town together.

While watching the concert, can’t help but notice the pride in Jimmy of The Archuletor. Another brother figure for David I suppose

He really looks good in red.
And in green.
In black, too!
White also.
But any shade of blue gives him that gah-some glow
Heck, i better stop.
Oh-Oh, me thinks Ms. Vanessa (DC back-up singer) caught ODD. She has another blog and David is in there, too!
“David’s a delightful young man, and I pray, one of the ones who won’t be negatively impacted by notoriety. We made it all the way through dinner before a young girl rushed up to him and asked, “Are you American Idol?” That was followed by lots of cell phone photos and a father who said, “I don’t know who you are, but my son says you’re famous”. Another excited girl seemed to be trying to see how many different poses she could make. We all stood around like mother hens with Lupe laughing at it all, and at the same time, making sure things didn’t get out of hand.”
For the rest

Vanessa’s got it bad! And I can completely understand it LOL
Next!
JR, thanks for more of Vanessa’s blog. And that led me to the latest one in which she said “I want to grow up and be an old, old, old, old, woman and turn on whatever technology will serve as television in the future and applaud an older, wiser, prosperous, even more vocally satisfying David Archuleta.” Awww! She sounds very protective of David too. He has left quite a deep impression on her. Here’s the link to “A Capital Fourth: Thoughts on the 5th”: http://vanessa-ideasandimages.blogspot.com/2010/07/capitol-fourth-thoughts-on-5th.html
OK, before the TEJANO EVENT, may I add my last video to the CAPITOL 4TH EXTRAVAGANZA, just to complete my playlist
lol
18-14 David Archuleta @ Capitol 4th Concert (HD) -- INTRO, ANTHEM & STAND BY ME
I edited and switched some footage of the concert to give additional context (e.g. shots of the venue, size of crowd, introduction of performers, etc…), especially for those who were unable to watch the event. Enjoy!
I think this completes my chronicling David’s Happy Fourth
RE the whole concert — I must say I enjoyed the performances of Darius and Gladys. David could learn a lot from these two. The energy level of their voices carried their songs, even those with more upbeat tempo. And w/o them having to run across the stage. Esp Gladys. Senior citizens FTW!
I hope David gets to work with Gladys someday.
VERMEER -- LOL, Vanessa thinking about future David. Yup, she has ODD alright!
8throwcenter just posted David’s performances and so far they are the best audio:
As always, thanks 8throwcenter!

Bring Da Beat Back: David Archuleta Performs At A Capitol Fourth “Outstanding rendition of the national anthem..” http://bit.ly/aSnOQi
“David Archuleta spent the Fourth of July this year performing on PBS’ special A Capitol Fourth. He sang an outstanding rendition of the national anthem at the top of the show before returning to perform “Stand By Me” impressively as always. What a production that performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was! And if this pair of performances isn’t enough of an Archie fix for ya, never fear because his sophomore album is on the way! Listen to his first single, which will be available on iTunes on July 20th & his official site a week earlier, below (again, I’m sure… I’m not under the impression that any of David’s fans HAVEN’T heard it yet lol)”
David Archuleta: A Capital Fourth Performance (video)
David Archuleta opened the PBS holiday special, A Capitol Fourth, yesterday with a stunning performance of the Star Spangled Banner and later in the show he sang “Stand By Me.”
Hosted by Jimmy Smits, the tv special was celebrating its 30th anniversary, and also featured performances by Gladys Knight, Reba MacIntyre and Darius Rucker.

Okay… I woke up this morning with SBL in my head. I love that combination of light-hearted fluff with the hint of darkness that he does so well. As Rascal said so eloquently in his review, this is becoming his trademark.
Hi, just logging-in to say hi. Liz, great to see you’re now a fan of the song!
Rascal, I love your phrase to describe David, “full-on pop impresario.” Very exciting!
Vermeer, out of curiosity I checked out blogs from around the time of the AI7 finale, and found the near-universal criticism that Cook’s fans had of David was that he could “only sing ballads” and wasn’t current. Crush dispelled that myth somewhat, but I think SBL will blow it out of the water!
Watched David’s 2 performances Sunday night. Good performance of the National Anthem, but they completely drowned him with the choir toward the end. Dangit! Stand By Me was great, though.
ronaldsf: Regarding SBM, it seems like I can stop worrying about whether David will hit those high notes, now, don’t you think?
Ronald -- David isn’t just current, he’s timeless!
Marlie -- yeah, I think so lol!
Marlie, ain’t that the ta-ruth! He nailed that entire ending, and not just the high note!
JR, thanks for those videos with the better audio. It seems like the broadcast mixed the audio in a way so as to deemphasize the singers’ voices some. I’m having deja vu back to AI7 finale night lol.
Ronald, those who said David wasn’t current (and who called him the ballad boy), were lazy people who just like to repeat whatever others say instead of paying attention. I remember Chris Sligh (from season whatever!) also expressed his doubt about David’s ability to sell records because he is not current or some such nonsense. But at some point he did revise his own POV. Ha! I also found it really strange that during season 7 how Randy and/or Simon can write off his possibility of doing songs like the Stevie Wonder’s version of WCWIO just because of forgotten lyrics and a couple of bum notes (loud band, screaming girls, no in-ear monitor! hello!!) Do they not hear the rest of the performance?? Ok end of rant. You are right, Crush did dispel some of the myth, but SBL will blow it out of the water!! Yay!
Liz, current AND timeless! Love that! <3
A couple more pre-dress rehearsal videos captured by emilyluvsarchie:
SSB
SBM
RONALD -- those who pegged him in the balladeer square bugged me only if the comments came from people in the industry. I mean, this is their job. They are supposed to ID talent. See them for what they can be, not just for what they are -- esp if the talent is in a highly orchestrated show such as Idol.
JR, EXACTLY!! Just like my beef with David Foster in this thread, guys like Randy and Simon are in the biz! Their lack of perception and vision of what’s possible always baffle me. Ironically it was Paula who could see the great natural potential in David.
OK, before the Tejano Event, let’s not forget about another book signing in Henderson, NV.
Here is his interview with KVVU of Fox 5 More Studios
David Archuleta To Shoot ‘Something ‘Bout Love’ Video July 16
David Archuleta is getting ready to shoot the video for his new single “Something “Bout Love”
Details from a casting call reveal that David will be reunited with “Crush” director, Declan White Bloom and will be shot on July 16 in Los Angeles.
The video concept is described as “Young live and good times style concept.”
The production is looking for a lead girl:
Lead / Female / Caucasian, Ethnically Ambiguous / 18-24 yrs old. Cute charming beautiful young lady with a little bit of edge. Think an American Apparel model look. Need an actress for this role as opposed to a model.
They are also looking for skateboarders:
Featured / Male or Female / All Ethnicities / 18-24 yrs old
Highly experienced skater. If you can’t pull off a 360 kick flip clean,
bonless, or ollie a 6 step with a mute grab you’re not what were looking for.
I’ll assume the lead male will be David. Heh.
“Something ‘Bout Love” will be available for download from David’s online store July 13, then on iTunes July 20. Listen to a stream of the new single HERE.

A CALIFORNIA LITERARY REVIEW ON COS:
by Ryan Van Cleave
The Unshakable Faith of Archuleta
“I guess life gradually teaches us the lessons that we’re meant to learn, and in time, we figure out what we need in order to live happier.”
–David Archuleta
While this book is about the life and music of David Archuleta, you’d better have at least a passing interest in “American Idol” because as David himself puts it, “I wouldn’t be in the position to write this book had it not been for ‘American Idol.’” And that theme of thanks to one of America’s top TV shows of the past decade carries throughout much of this book. If you’re not somewhat familiar with the many names he constantly refers to (Tamyra Gray, AJ Gil, Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Justin Guarini, Nikki, RJ Helton, Ejay Day, and Ryan Starr to name just a few), this will be a tough read. That’s perhaps a problem with a nineteen-year-old boy writing a memoir–there’s not a whole lot of material to work with, and “American Idol” and its lasting effect dominated the last few years of his life.

Okay, you’ve seen my picture, right? I am female, caucasian, 24 years old, charming (:D) AND edgy! http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs151.snc4/36920_407381554234_704724234_4111921_3530425_n.jpg

See that pose? I can totally do that. After a bit of surgery, but still.
EMBE -- go for it!
Book Tour Page has been updated. Henderson Page is now added. Quick check out David singing ANGELS during the book signing — it is a performance am sure archies will have a lot to say!

JR: That video of David singing Angels -- well, geez, can it get any better than that? The whole song A Capella. And some heavenly diva moves and notes.
Daid.
JR, THANK YOU for assembling these pages from his book-signing tour and keeping us updated!
Although we’ve heard David sing Angels many times before, he never ceases to take us aback with this song. His voice is rich and strong in this performance. And the song continues to live and evolve under his influence.
Although I enjoy hearing David acappella so we can hear The Voice, the way he has developed the song I kinda want to hear the full orchestra/band behind him, Tulsa-style! Of course it was still amazing.
Embe, no way to catch a flight to LA to audition for the SBL video, eh?
Dangit! But anywayz I don’t think you’d have time to recover from the surgery haha.
If I were to guess, I think that the lead girl is not a romantic interest for David in the video -- they emphasized “actress” in the casting call and so I’m guessing the video’s going to focus on a teen who’s going through dramas in her life -- boyfriends, family, etc. That’s just my theory -- I could be wrong! (But come on, “acting” like you’re in love with David doesn’t require much skill, does it?
)
But heck I don’t blame you for wanting to “act” with David, mm-hmm! Heck, if only I were “ethnically ambiguous” I would try out too!
Ronald: I’d have to act like I WASN’T in love with David… and I don’t think I’m competent to do that.
Gah. I’m gonna have to remind myself again that I’m engaged and David is hideous and unattractive to get through the day.
My hunch is that the video will focus on a story, with shots of David singing from time to time, but David not necessarily in the center of the story.
