I just love the way the Asian fans adore David. Thanks for so many good videos!
David now has over 1,000,000 Facebook Fans. Hello? Are they buying the freakin’ album? He should be at the top of the charts with that size fanbase. But, perhaps many are not US fans, and so their purchases don’t count here.
Yup, working on it, while uploading the vids… LOL

David Archuleta likes the ladies
by Amy Mosura
MANILA, Philippines—It’s been two and a half years since cherubic 16-year-old David Archuleta won hearts and votes to place second in “American Idol,” possibly the biggest talent contest on television.
There’s been no rest for the adorable, as Archuleta has since released a pop album and a Christmas album, and toured the world. He even made a Manila pit stop in 2009 for a back-to-back concert with “Idol” 2008 first-placer David Cook, yielding the hilarious event poster that read, “Cook David Archuleta.”
He’s back on a promo tour for his third album “The Other Side of Down,” which promises a sound that’s “older, wiser, with faith still on his side, and an eternally optimistic, wide-eyed outlook.” A very young-looking 20, Archuleta is the very definition of wholesome. Asked at a press con on Wednesday about his favorite memory of the Philippines from the first time around, he claimed that mangoes, not girls, stole his heart. “I ate so many! The mangoes we get in the [United] States are really stringy. Here, they’re so fresh!”
It’s not that girls aren’t on his horizon, ladies. But David Archuleta is one of the few people in show business past puberty who can get away with blinking innocently when people ask about “a special someone.” It actually seems refreshing, and he can go on and on in admiration of his favorite female peers—like Charice Pempengco, with whom he has a duet on his holiday album, “Christmas from the Heart.”
“I keep in touch with her,” Archuleta says of Charice. “I’ll see her on Sunday; we’ll be performing in an event. When I heard she’d be there, I was like, great, that’ll be really fun.”
But is he following her into acting? “It’s not something I initially felt I’d be very good at. But when I took roles in “iCarly” and “Hannah Montana,” I had a really great time. I really enjoyed it. So… who knows?”
Fellow tween stars
Fellow tween starlets are also treated with much respect by the “Idol” star. “‘iCarly’s’ Miranda Cosgrove was really nice and sweet, and more quiet than I thought she’d be.” He glosses over the troubles of Disney starlet Demi Lovato, who recently went into rehab for emotional issues, and with whom Archuleta toured in 2009. “At 18, Demi is so talented. She acts, she sings, she plays instruments and writes songs. It was a real treat watching her perform. And she’s really smart.”
He credits this respect for women to being surrounded by women. He has three sisters of whom he feels protective. “They taught me how to care and look after someone. At home, I’m like, ‘Who’s that boy?’ It’s important to have a lot of respect for girls and to value them.” And when he does pursue a girl romantically, Archuleta says, laughing, “I probably wouldn’t wanna tell people.”
Watching ‘Idol’
Now, another thing he’ll be doing when he gets home is watch the new and—maybe-or-maybe-not—improved new season of “American Idol.” For those who just got out of a Chilean mine, the show recently underwent a major revamp with the departure of the show’s best-known judge, Simon Cowell, who is launching the US version of his very own UK franchise, “The X-Factor.” (It should be pointed out that this killed the original “Idol” franchise, “Pop Idol.”) With the axing of Kara DioGuardi and the resignation of Ellen DeGeneres, last judge standing Randy Jackson will be joined by Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler at the judges’ table.
Says Archuleta, “People have gotten used to seeing Simon and hearing his opinions, but Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, being artists and performers, would give an additional element to the judging. [There are now two artists who] have gone through the whole process… fame and performing and making albums and… doing what they want to do to music
. I think they’ll be giving good advice.”
He himself is getting used to the demands of his career. “I trip all the time, but it’s not embarrassing anymore—the first few times, it was like ‘Oh, no, I’ve shown people I’m imperfect!’ After the thirtieth time, I figured people know I fall down a lot. And that’s okay.”
From Philippine Star
So what’s the other side of David A.?
Before he sat down for this one-on-one yesterday in a suite at the Manila Peninsula, American Idol runner-up David Archuleta was casually singing a song from his new album titled The Other Side of Down (released locally by Sony Music Entertainment, Inc.). He was in a buoyant mood, hardly showing any signs of wear and tear even if he had just flown in the day before from Singapore for the album promo, which is also what brought him here for the second time. Last year, David A. co-starred in a concert at the MOA Concert Grounds with his namesake, David Cook, who was, in contrast to David A., very serious and very morose probably because he was grieving since his brother had died (of cancer) three weeks before he came to Manila.
David A. did a showcase yesterday afternoon at the Skydome of SM North EDSA. “It would be fun to see my Filipino fans again and sing for them,” he said, apologizing every now and then when he had to clear his throat.
Let’s go straight to what David A. has to say about his album and other topics.
Why did you call your album The Other Side of Down?
“Because I want people to look at things in a different way. I wanted to be very positive with the album and I was able to help in writing the songs. I guess the main message is that life can be difficult and challenging but life is good even if sometimes it can be confusing.”
Confusing?
“Yeah. Life can be confusing especially among teenagers. You know, they keep asking, ‘Where do I take my life? What am I supposed to do?’ It’s a confusing time for so many people but at the same time there are so many opportunities, and so I wanted to remind people to just have a good attitude.”
How does it feel to be at the other side of down…to be up?
“Life is always like a roller-coaster, there are ups and there are downs. They never go away; they will always be there. But the downs make you appreciate the ups a lot more. Face the downs and be grateful for the ups.”
Do the songs on the album reflect the present state of your life and career?
“Yeah. The album is very David Archuleta. I just got to show the goopy-dorky side of me. It was fun doing that. The album is very personal for me. It will make my fans see where I am coming from as a person and where he’s hoping to go.”
Of course, you know Charice.
“Yes, of course!”
Any project with her?
“I did a Christmas album last year and I sang a duet with Charice on Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. I have always so much respect for Charice as a person and now I have so much respect for her as a person, too. She’s really great.”
You sound like you know Charice very well.
“Yeah, I do. I keep in touch with her. In fact, I’m seeing her on Sunday for a show.”
You have one thing in common with Charice. You sang the same song, And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going (from Dreamgirls, sung by Jennifer Hudson, another American Idol graduate), that sort of got you noticed.
“I sang it in American Idol before I became a contestant on it. Charice sang it on the YouTube (Uploaded by Charice’s fan from a talent-search show in Korea and that’s where Charice was discovered by Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. — RFL). That’s where I saw it.”
You seem to have the same taste in music.
“Yeah. It’s amazing how she sang that song. It’s cool.”
Are you a fan of Glee?
“Yeah. It’s really a fun show. It was cool seeing someone you know on that show. It’s a funny, hilarious show.”
Any chance of you guesting in Glee (like everybody else, including Britney Spears and Gwyneth Paltrow)?
“Ahhhh, I don’t know. You never know what can happen. I think it will be fun to be on that show. The characters are outcasts, they are kind of like the geeks. They love music. That’s me!”
You are also a boxing fan, aren’t you?
“Yes, I am. I met Manny Pacquiao at a party last year (Hosted by Ronald Singson who produced the two Davids’ show. — RFL). I saw his fight (versus Antonio Margarito) in Texas. I watched it on TV. I’m a Pacquiao fan.”
So far, what would you consider the biggest challenge in your life?
“The biggest challenge? Hmmmm, just like anyone, how I can be useful in my life and what is it that I can do that will be beneficial not just for myself but for other people. I think that’s how you can leave a lasting impression. If you can serve other people, they can take that with them if you’re not around anymore.”
I think you’re doing exactly that with your music.
“Oh, thank you, thank you!”
From Manila Bulletin
David Archuleta stays positive amid criticisms, challenges
MANILA, Philippines -- In a time when songs about sex dominate the charts, and even regular folks criticize public figures, well, regularly if not unwarrantedly, singer-songwriter David Archuleta stays positive with goals intact.
“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It’s a matter of me making a mark. What I’m trying to do is make a mark and leave an impression to the people who want to listen and willing to take time to understand what I’m trying to accomplish,” the baby-faced “American Idol” runner-up told Bulletin Entertainment and other members of the media in a roundtable interview last Nov. 17.
His third album, “The Other Side Of Down (TOSOD),” received mixed reviews from various critics upon release last October. Some praised its commercial appeal and deeper content, while others claimed the young idol seemed to have nestled in the safe zone and put in the shade his solid yet sweet, soulful voice to make way for the use of vocal effects.
David acknowledges that “there’s always been mixed reviews.”
“I’ve had plenty of mixed reviews in the first CD, and with the Christmas album, and with each song that gets released,” he added.
Although “TOSOD” did not debut as high as his first album, and that his new single “Something ‘Bout Love” hasn’t charted in the Billboard Hot 100 (as compared to “Crush” which zoomed all the way to number two in its first week), David maintained that his main aim for the new record is to express his real voice.
“I think people get so caught up in the form and the formula of how to write a hit song, and that the lyrics should be more relationship-y. You can get very technical with the music…
“But especially with this album, my focus wasn’t to be technical. It was very personality-focused. And so many people could say, ‘oh you did this wrong,’ or ‘you did this right.’ But one of the goals was to be experimental and try things, because how am I gonna know if I didn’t try?” he said.
Collaborating with Nashville, Tennessee songwriters like Joy Williams not only contributed to the maturity in David’s music, but also to his overall perspective.
“Instead of them telling me this is who you are and this is who you’re gonna be, they waited enough and were patient enough for me to figure out myself so that I could tell them who I was. And I think that is so amazing. It completely changed my life, and totally changed my perspective about things and what I wanted to share with people,” he enthused.
Before he had those writing sessions in Nashville, David recalled to have simply gone with the flow, because he thought “it was just the way it is.”
“All the writing sessions I’ve had before Nashville were about ‘oh, what’s the biggest hit we can write?’ ‘It’s not catchy enough, we can’t do that,’ or ‘that lyric is not hooky enough.’
“And oh, when I would come up with ideas and song lyrics before, they’d be like, ‘Oh you can’t do that. You have to turn it into a relationship song.’ And I believed them [then],” he related.
The 19-year old idol co-wrote 10 of the 12 tracks in “TOSOD,” which, underneath its bouncy melodies, mostly represents one’s journey towards self-discovery and acceptance.
David also related having learned to be more forward and expressive in his views, as proven by the inclusion of “Good Place” in “TOSOD,” a song which he said almost didn’t make it on the album.
Starting out young in the industry, David finds it challenging to grow as an artist “when everyone’s watching you.”
Even so, he deems it “an interesting challenge.”
“It helps you grow as an artist in a way that you might not have known before. It’s still kind of weird how people are watching you trying to figure it out yourself, but I think it’s good at the same time,” he said.
David was in Manila recently to promote his “TOSOD.” After his press interviews at The Peninsula Manila, the crooner serenaded his fans at the SM Skydome in a three-song set. An autograph session came afterward wherein he reportedly signed all of the CDs that the fans bought (and not just the first 400 who did as per promo mechanics).
CANDYMAG
The Cutest Boy in the World
At about 2:30 pm yesterday, Marla, Macy and I had the privilege to meet one of the sweetest, cutest American Idol alumni—David Archuleta!
Marla and I followed AI Season 7 religiously and rooted for Archie during the exciting finale. When he came to Manila with Idol champ David Cook, Marla, Mimi, and I belted our hearts out to their songs. So it was such a thrill when a year after that fateful concert (where we only got to gaze at him from afar), we finally met him up close and personal!
I won’t tell you what we talked about during the interview (you’ll have to wait for Candy‘s March issue for that!), but here are a few snaps for your viewing pleasure.
http://www.candymag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_0365.jpg
http://www.candymag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_0365.jpg
And because we are huge fans and know how much he loves mangoes in the Philippines, we decided to get him a pack of Mangorind—sweet, tangy mango-flavored candies which he can take with him back to the US! (I hope you think of us when you eat these, Archie!)
If you can’t get enough of Archie, be sure to grab a copy of his newest album, The Other Side of Down. (It’s currently on repeat in my iPod! I’m loving the tracks “Parachutes and Airplanes” and “Complain.”) David, who graciously signed our copies, says, “My sophomore album is about moving forward and making progress. I’m heading towards ‘the other side of down,’ which is up.”
Here’s proof of our brief but memorable encounter—the ladies of Summit Media with David Archuleta

Wishing I could give the cutest boy in the world a hug,
Angel O:)
P.S. Did any of you catch his performance at SM North Edsa last night? Tell us about it!
This is my favorite write-up so far
“He’s a Rare Kid” – @RX931′s Chico
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc11/chicogarcia_bucket/Strange%20Fruit%202/Archuleta-101604.jpg
We were thrilled when we were told that we were interviewing David Archuleta in his hotel suite! He’s here for a showcase this afternoon and he had time to met some of the press people and we were fortunate to be part of the lucky ones who got up close to the unassuming young lad from Utah. We’re big American Idol fans, so it was quite a treat to meet one of the more successful alumni of the ubiquitous franchise.
First thing he noticed was my Thailand t-shirt, and he remarked how much he loves Thai food. We were surprised at just how gentle and humble this kid is! We all know the David Archuleta image we see on TV, right? We see him as shy, easily embarrassed, even awkward sometimes, but when you meet him in person, you realize just how genuine this guy is. Cut from a very different cloth as most of the celebs we’ve met. There’s no disingenuous bone in his body. The reluctant star shtick…isn’t a shtick. From the first time he opened his mouth, to the last thing he said to us, you can see that he means it, no matter how sanitized his image may seem to you. He’s a rare kid, who still accentuates the positive, who actually thinks he’s gotten out of his comfort zone by fighting for positive messages in his music that most people find ironically off-putting.
We did a Top Ten on him, giving him the Top Ten questions fans want David Archuleta to answer. We gave him your questions, ranging from questions involving American Idol to questions involving Justin Bieber. He was very game to answer the questions, so game in fact, that we went way over our 10 minute limit. We really tried to keep it under 10 minutes, but David seemed like he was really enjoying answering the questions. His handler would make signs to wrap up the interview at least 3 times, but he kept on going. He was really light to talk to, like it was the most stress-free conversation you’ve ever had. Now I understand it when people say someone is “maagan kasama“. David Archuleta was exactly that.
I don’t want to give away details of the interview, because we’ll be airing the full interview on RX. We’ll make sure to announce when. Delle and I still couldn’t believe that we met David Archuleta, such a wonderful person, practically beaming with light (you won’t understand it unless you meet the guy) and we wish him all the best in his career.
He’s passionate about his music, but at the same time acknowledging that sometimes he can be too cheesy for his own good; he’s self-aware but not neurotic. We know that when it comes to success, deserving has little to do with it. But you root for David because he’s really one of the good guys. And it’s nice to see that every now and then, some good guys finish first.

Heck, I really tried hard not to highlight the whole dang thing! LOL
This is a recap of Dom, an Archie from Team Pen (yeah, we have Team NAIA, Team Pen & Team SkyDome, bahahahaha)
I got stunned by David Archuleta (David Archuleta at Manila Peninsula Hotel)
by Dominick Discarga on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 12:22pm
This absolutely late. It was November 16th, consistent na yung invitation ng mga archies na mag join ng team na mag-welcome kay David either sa hotel or airport. I already made my mind, I said…alam ko namang di ko sya makikita ng malapitan eh, mas maganda pa siguro kung sa TV kasi for sure kitang kita ko. [translation: AP had been persistent w/ the invites to join the teams to welcome David. I was convinced that I won't be able to see him so I thought i would be better to just watch him on TV]
My communication to faye is constant. I dunno kung ilang beses ko nang sinabing di ako sasama. [I don't remember anymore how many times I said I won't go] But in the end nag punta rin ako. I wish to join the Airport team…apparently late na ako naka-pagdecide kaya join na lang ako sa team hotel. Ang siste eh, I’ve never been to Manila Peninsula and I never had any experience going inside a huge hotel para lang makit ang isang idol…so I really don’t know what to do. Question like “what the security asks me kung anu gagawin ko sa loob?”, “what if malaman nilang David Archuleta fan ako…papalabasin kaya ako?” [translation: what if they find out am a DA fan, would they shoo me away?]
Well, the hell I care. I can pretend. haha. I was at the front of the hotel at di ko alam kung saan ang entrance nya. [translation: I dunno where the entrance is]. Good thing Alec is helping out, hanggang sa makita ko ang Escolta entrance. [transation: until I saw the Escolta Entrance] I asked the guard “Manong, how can I get inside the main lobby?” in a konyo way of saying it. And the guard respectfully showed me the way how to get in there.
To cut it short, I was able to get inside the Hotel. I met Ate Naree, Ate Lorma at ilan pang Archies. Time is coming so fast. Team airport is texting ate naree that David’s plane just landed…so freak out na kami kasi we dont have the permission from Pen yet. Ate Lorma’s attempt to get permitted was declined. I said “No way”….not Manila Pen…hindi sila ang pipigil sa akin na makita si David. [translatoon: MlaPen won't stop me from seeing David] So I think of ways how to make this happen.
FIRST: I talked to the guard at the main entrance. Konting usap, konting kwento. And then I asked “Kuya, naging fan ka na po ba?” Kasi po darating si David ngayon and I am a super fan…gusto ko lang sana humingi ng favor kung pede kaming tumayo sa gilid…i-welcome sana namin sya.” [translation: "Have u been a fan? You see David is coming today and I am a super fan... I'd like to ask a favor if we could stand by the side so that we could welcome him]
Kuya said na we have to talked to the head of their security kasi nga di naman sila pwedeng mag decide. [translation: We have to talk to their superiors cos they can't decide at their level] Which I totally understand.
SECOND: I talked to the head security, na naka-amerikana and asked the same thing. Tapos sabi nya okay lang sa kanila, basta pumayag ang GM ng Pen. So ngayon General Manager ng Peninisula naman.[ translation: Head of Security says if the Pen GM approves, then no problem w/ us. So now I have to talk to GM of The Pen]
THIRD: Nilabas kami ng General Manger ng Pen, Mr, Guevarra is the name. He is accomodating and he explained to me everything about security at marami pang iba…wala akong naintindihan. [translation: He explained everything & more... I didn;t understand a thing!] Maybe because, I know that this guys will not allow more than 20 peeps gathered outside Pen.
But, just like what I’ve told you…hindi ako papayag na di ko makita si David that day…hinding hindi. [Said to myself, "No way!" that I won't see David]
Ate Naree said na nakaalis na ang van…konti na lang ang panahonI need the permit now na! I asked for another GM at this time out na si Mr. Guevarra, kaya babae naman. Ay bongga, ang bait nya nung una ayaw nya pumayag…parehong dahilan security and Sony directions daw. So I said, I’m a huge fan…bigger than what she can imagine…and the people that I have with me were big fans too…I asked her “do you know what a huge fan can do? if they will not be allowed to see their I dol?” I saw that she kinda think and I added “what we want to accomplish today is a win win outcome for both us, fans and Manila Peninsula…If we will not be allowed to see David…we will definitely do everything that we can to see him and it may result to something undesirable….but allowing us to stay at a corner we wil commit to a peaceful well ordered welcoming”
Ilang minuto kami naghintay…kahit di pa sya pumapayag kasi sabi nya “I’ll get back to you on that” umayos na kami. It was so funny kasi we have a motto at the hotel we said “We will not approach David…let him approach us”.
So pinayagan na kami at nag set up na kami ng banners. Mamaya…a Hi Ace van came in…kala namin bisita lang kaya sa amin wala lang…maya maya…bumaba na si David may moment of silence…pero after he waved his hands at us…ayan na…people said “Daaaavvviiiddd” sabay takbo sa loob ng hotel.
We thought, alright tapos na. We committed to Manila Peninsula for a peaceful welcoming and it happened. We looked at David as he went inside the lobby. I saw him talking to Melinda and the African American guy who I think is his security. Maya maya…he is running na towards us carrying his adorable smile and asked if we want a signature, and who we are to decline that request. The joy that we had that time is something you can’t imagine. He signed our archu stuff and ensure that we were able to get a picture of him. Melinda’s ides of group picture was just amazing. I remembered his big security guy said “No Photos” David immediately replied “ohh…why not?” tameme si kuya. hahaha
As I write this blog I can’t help but to get teary. Pathetic and funny as it may seems, but yeah…I got teary. I never thought that a David Archuleta will even care about our feelings and please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he never cared for us fans, he is a nice guy and that is indisputable. it is just that, him running outside the hotel asking if we want a picture taken and a signature is waaayy waaayy unbelievable. I never thought that he is, this so personal in terms of making concrete connection with his fans. He charmed us and and up to this day I can’t believe I met and shook hands with him.

Fans Flock NAIA for David Archuleta’s Arrival
A number of fans flocked the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) November 16 to witness David Archuleta’s arrival in the Philippines.
David Archuleta is now in the Philippines for the second time. The American Idol season 7 runner up first came here last year for a one night concert with David Cook. The concert drew a crowd of around 70,000 to 100,000 at the SM Mall of Asia that time.
Now, he is in Manila once again to promote his second album called “The Other Side of Down.” He will grace his Manila fans day this afternoon, November 17, at the Sky Dome of SM North Edsa.
David has a strong Filipino fan base that is why he is excited to come back to the Philippines. He was welcomed by a number of fans at the airport.
The carrier single from David Archuleta‘s sophomore album titled “There’s Something ‘Bout Love” topped various radio charts accross the country. His new single “Elevator” is now no. 1 on Magic 30 Countdown.

I LOVE MAKE UP
Recap of a Make-Up Artist
David Archuleta in Manila
When I got a call to do his grooming 2 weeks ago I nearly dropped the phone. I was like…is this for real? hehhe. I refuse to believe it until yesterday when it actually happened. Let me recount everything for everyone on how everything went.
1. I was at the Pen exactly 930 AM
2. We went up to the room wherein the interviews/presscon is going to be held.
3. I met David’s handlers and we were given instructions.
4. Myx crew arrived and did their set up.
5. Kris and I also prepared our things and took a reallllly deeeeep breath.
6. At exactly 10:15 I met David and we proceeded to do the grooming.
7. He was really charming and everything and we got to talk and all.
8. He said he wanted very minimal makeup. His skin is very smooth and so I just did a quick airbrush makeup for him. He was saying “Oh this is so cool, it feels cold” while smiling.
9. He asked me what music I was listening to and I answered Bruno Mars. He said that he also love love Bruno Mars’ music.
10. He asked me if I know Adele’s music. I said yes and told him I love “Chasing Pavements”. He said he loves Adele also and i should check out Adele’s new song which was already uploaded in youtube.
11. He complimented my necklace..”That’s a nice owl”…hehhe
12. After that muntik na ako himatayin..jusko…heh
13. Then it’s a long slew of interviews for him.
14. Myx was first, then Ricky Lo, Raymond Gutierrez, Tim Yap, ruffa gutierrez, grace lee, chico, then publications and print, then some lucky fans.
15. In between we did touch ups and he was really having a good time all throughout.
16. After wrapping up the interviews he shook my hand and said thank you and see you later.
17. We then proceeded to Sm North and secured our spots and watched the show.
18. We dropped by one last time to see David and we had our picture taken and he kept saying thanks and we kept saying thanks and we just all laughed at the end.
It was really nice meeting you David and thank you for being such a nice person in spite of being a really big celebrity.

Interesting: Any chance of you guesting in Glee (like everybody else, including Britney Spears and Gwyneth Paltrow)?
“Ahhhh, I don’t know. You never know what can happen. I think it will be fun to be on that show. The characters are outcasts, they are kind of like the geeks. They love music. That’s me!”

Enjoy!
From a fan report on David A’s departure from the Philippine:
“Little background about the photo above from the blog of the guy fan… Those fans waited overnight at the hotel to say goodbye to David (from showcase to 5am). When Melinda came down, they asked if they could have a pic with David. Melinda wasn’t sure because David had just woken up. David came down and talked to them for a bit, thanking them, etc. and then boarded the van. Fans were disappointed they didn’t ask him for a photo or even sign their COS copies. They didn’t want to be demanding. Van door closed, started moving, then stopped. Melinda and David were talking inside the bus. Then, David came out and asked the fans if they wanted a photo with them.”
His fans are used to hearing stories like this, but still in awe when realizing how he’s been that way since day one.
JR: David’s accessibility and willingness to take those extra five or ten minutes with his fans is one of the qualities that make him “David.” It’s so nice to hear his Asian fans also noticing this and being just as enthralled with that part of his personality. This trip has been fun to watch!
Yes. I was also thrilled to see him getting his way. It wasn’t just once when his handlers said “no” and he overturned it.
Another article published by Manila Bulletin, but this time written by Ms. Grace Lee of Magic 89.9FM. She was one of the celebrities who had a 1-on-1 interview w/ David. Read on what she had to say:
Another side of David Archuleta
November 19, 2010, 11:41am
It’s been a year since David Archuleta last visited the Philippines. I have been interviewing many celebrities, local and international, for the past four years, and I must say that my interview with David Archuleta last year was my favorite.
This year, as I interview him for the second time, I realize it just keeps getting better with our baby faced Idol. I was thrilled to be seeing him again, hoping that the glitz and glamour of Hollywood has not dulled the natural sunshine that he is.
There is a sigh of relief when I enter the room, as I see the same exact David I remember: With the biggest grin ever and smiling adorable eyes. He is the epitome of “childlike” person, a rare gem of positive and grateful character.
When asked about what he missed about the Philippines, he excitedly pointed out the sincere, enthusiastic Filipino fans. “I am really looking forward to perform for the fans, that’s exciting because the fans here, they are not like anywhere else… They have a lot of energy, it’s a different kind of interaction with them!”
“The Other Side of Down” isn’t quite the title you expect from David Archuleta, until you understand what he meant by it exactly.
“I wanted people to look twice and think… the other side of down is up! I wanted people to think and look at things from a different perspective. It symbolizes the album moving forward and looking ahead, but differently, in a positive way too. It’s about moving towards the other side of down… Sometimes life can get frustrating but there is still so much good. So I try to be positive with this album, and that’s how look at life. It can be very confusing at times but there are so many opportunities and have realized how life kind of works in a very unpredictable way. You keep on going anyway and amazing things happen. Life is full of surprises. Never underestimate the future and I want people to feel all these things through the album.”
The positivity he talks about exudes from his entire being. There is not one moment that will give you doubt about his sincerity and passion for singing and life in general. Just being around him is such a joy, because happiness is contagious.
He is an endearing personality in the entertainment industry because he is atypical in Hollywood. As a singer, he is one of the very few talents nowadays who draws our interest and admiration with purely his talent guiding his career.
He does not have the Justin Bieber hair, catchy outfits or gossip-worthy relationships. He is turning 20 next month, admittedly yet to date anyone and is just getting around organizing his thoughts better.
“Before I never quite knew what to think… everything is confusing, it goes over my head. I have been able to understand what it is that I want to do, what direction I’m going to take. What is the basic kind of impact I want to make while I am here, while I’m doing music. Through music, I feel like I was really able to introduce people to real David. What goes on in David’s mind or why does David look at things the way he does. I wanted people to understand that.”
As he preps himself to enter the 20s, of course I had to touch on the subject of his love life, as I owe it to many young, curious girls out there.
“I have enjoyed being a teenager. I have never been in a relationship, but I’m more ready than I was before at least. But there are things I’m still figuring out and learning. I feel like when you meet the right person I think you will be able to tell. There is a song actually in the album, which is like my love song – my kind of perfect. She is anything but typical, a sweet surprise, no matter what she is looking at the bright side.”
David Archuleta is the only person I have ever met who constantly expresses his feelings or describes a situation by breaking into a song. When random thoughts enter his mind he sings the word or a short phrase to describe it.
It is amazing to see a person just translate himself constantly with his love – music. That’s where I know he’s a true artist. He does not make an effort to carry a tune. He is music. And his second album is unique, as it will be his last album as a teenager. It reflects his confusions, struggles, lessons learned and hopes.
(“Korean by birth and Filipino at heart” is the best and the common description Grace Lee has received from people she loves. After living in the Philippines for 18 years, she has come to consider the Philippines her home, calling it definitely a privilege. Ms. Lee co-hosts “Good Times with Mo” over Magic 89.9).
