It’s always a pleasure to see David recognized by the media, whether it is a magazine, a radio station or a TV interview or profile. For far too long it seemed David was overlooked, perhaps even dismissed by some who thought he was just “that kid on Idol.”
Lately, though, it seems the media is getting it. Little by little David is getting recognized and being invited to perform at events that have wide appeal and a broad audience. Could it be the new management? Or is it David’s winning ways (does anyone who meets him or interviews him ever say anything bad about him?)
Whatever is putting David in the central spotlight, it’s about dang time.
PS – Yeah, I know it was a fan poll, but it still is nice.
~ marlie

Huh. Cool. It may have been a fan poll, but they (someone at the mag) still had nice things to say about him. So, being the curious sort, I went and looked at the list… I guess David isn’t the only one with less PR than he deserves… who are all those other people, anyway? lol (OK, I’d heard of about half of them.)
“Senseless” — song leak (thanks to x0mGiLuVDaViDAx):
The Most Powerful Voices Under 30
01 Josh Groban (29)
After performing You´re Still You on the 2001 season finale of Ally McBeal, Josh Groban´s name, and voice, became widely recognized. Now, with four solo albums, nominations for American Music Awards, Academy Awards and Grammys, six appearances on Oprah, and a uniquely powerful voice, Josh Groban has solidified his spot as a young musical talent.
02 Charlotte Church (24)
When her first album, Voice of an Angel, made her the youngest artist (she was just 12 years old) with a Number 1 album on the British classical charts, it was clear Church had a bright career ahead of her. Now 24-years-old, Church has established herself as a classical singer with constantly evolving vocals.
03 Beyonce (29)
Getting her start in R&B girl group Destiny´s Child, Beyonce eventually decided going solo was the best option for her. She was right. Though the group was one of the best-selling of its kind, her numerous number one hits and success as a solo artist prove that she´s a self-made star. Her strong voice is showcased in songs like Dangerously in Love and Irreplaceable, proving that her vocal ability is the reason she´s reached the top.
04 Amy Winehouse (27)
Known for her deep and powerful vocals, Amy Winehouse has been nominated for six Grammy Awards and won five, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year, for her album Back to Black. While she deals with substance abuse and addiction issues, it´s obvious her talent still shines through.
05 Leona Lewis (25)
After competing in, and winning, British TV series, The X Factor, Lewis went on to release 2 albums and get nominated for 3 Grammy Awards. Her incredible vocal range and ability to hit both high and low notes has been compared to Mariah Carey.
06 Alicia Keys (29)
With her first album earning her 5 Grammy Awards and her second album another four, Alicia´s pure talent and vocal ability made her an instant success. Not only is her voice powerful and unique, she´s also an accomplished pianist, making her style distinctive.
07 David Archuleta (20)
One of the youngest contestants on the seventh season of American Idol, Archuleta went on to become the runner-up in a group of extremely talented individuals. Though not the winning contestant, he released an album the next year that instantly became a success and landed himself a spot on Forbes list of ‘Breakout Stars of 2008´.
08 Rihanna (22)
With 9 songs appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2005, numerous nominations and awards and millions of albums sold worldwide, Rihanna has quickly worked her way up to stardom. Her voice perfectly blends R&B and reggae, giving her a style all her own.
09 Jackie Evancho (10)
At just 10-years-old, Evancho has already come in 2nd place on the fifth season of America´s Got Talent, had her first album appear on the Billboard 200 and her latest release has made her the top-selling debut artist for 2010. There´s a lot to look forward to from this young musician, who also plays the violin and piano.
10 Win Butler (30)
The lead singer of indie rock back Arcade Fire, Butler´s vocals offer versatility and project a vulnerability that is the perfect pairing with the lyrics and topics in the band´s songs. The quiver in his voice provides a rawness that matches the themes being addressed in their music, making him one of the most powerful voices in rock.
olemr2001: I’m senseless listening to that song! THIS is what I love to hear from David. Heartfelt, tender, emotion-filled. GAH!
By the way, the song is written by James Fauntleroy, also the writer of My Hands, one of my all-time favorite DA songs. Apparently, this was recorded for the first album but not used. Um, why not!
I can understand why it wasn’t included. Aside from the fact that if it was for the 1st album, some parties feel David is too young for such songs (remember the comment on “Desperate”), the melody has that “it-has-super possibilities” groove. But no crescendo, no climax. It didn’t fulfill its promise.
Vocals is of course great. Except for a bit overproduced backtrack.
But that’s just me. Am not an expert
Did I mention the vocals is GAH-some?
BTW, I have completed our 2010 HOLIDAY SHOW DATES PAGE.

Senseless to discuss which version is better, right? Tee-hee
Am looking forward to the time when David will havea full blown love-song of an album. SIGH
DA Mention @ People’s Choice + SBL Download Promo
Anw, aside from the mention during the PCA awards, PCA further promoted Archuleta w/ a free download of “Something ‘Bout Love”

Plus PEOPLE’S CHOICE BUZZBLOG by Liz Warner
I love the end of American Idol. The end part that is, because then you’ve gotten past all the folks who didn’t fare too well in their efforts, and now you get to watch the trailblazing, tear-inducing, mascara-wearing, hometown-mobilizing, glassware-shattering voices who will hopefully land a place in history. Or at least in our collective hearts.
And today, I’d like to discuss one of the more appealing players on that stage. David Archuleta: American Idol runner-up, singer extraordinaire, bestselling author, tremendous go-to guy when it comes to bringing awareness to those in need, and all around whopping talent is now er, back. With a brand new album — this makes three records so far (nor is he yet twenty. Way to pave the way for the rest of us, Dave…)
Anyway – if you’re not yet a fan, you’re probably about to become one. For two reasons. First) you’re going to get a David Archuleta song download for free, right here and right now. And second) you’ll play the free song at which point it may very well dawn upon you that this kid has, in fact, one terrific set of pipes. This is exactly what happened to me. I walked right into it. Who am I to turn down free music? And the less I know the better. Turns out, honestly, that free download was actually worth every penny. It’s called Something ‘Bout Love from the album The Other Side of Down, and he’s kind of astonishing. And, from what I can tell unusually genuine and down-to-earth for someone so young. That One/Two process with the freebie worked for me because I was late to the Idol game and didn’t actually get caught up in the madness til Adam Lambert and Kris Allen battled it out the following year. I didn’t know from David Archuleta. So when I got the download I was happy to listen, had zero expectation, and was entirely unprepared for what this 19-year old would deliver. Now here’s the deal: if you’re among the first thousand (1000) PCA members – you can join on the spot too – you get to click and presto, you get the free song. If you’re already a fan, you needn’t have even read this far – just one click and David Archuleta’s latest download’s yours – just for the clicking. They say there’s no such thing as free lunch, but this comes rather close. …
Dear PCA, Next time, it would have been better if David Archuleta was actually a guest or presenter or the best scenario yet, a performer @ the awards show!
And though I can understand why Senseless didn’t make the cut, I cannot also deny that emo David, esp when wailing such lines as “My pain won’t let this heart beat in my chest…” makes my knees buckle and makes me want to give him a hug till the pain goes away.
Jennifer Lopez on David Archuleta
The new issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine isn’t out yet, but MJ from MJsBigBlog has the scoop!!! and look at what J-Lo said:
Jennifer Lopez namechecks David Archuleta. She says, “I think it’s about exciting performances. One of my favorite moments ever on Idol was not a big-voice moment but a beautiful-song moment, which was David Archuleta singing “Imagine.”That was something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life, that little kid at that little age taking that classic song and singing it in such a way that it changed my everything, like Steven loves to say all the time. That’s what we need to focus on getting: not big voices, not singer-songwriters, just what makes us feel something. I think that is gonna be what makes people come back every week.”
Ms. JLo definitely gets David
Thanks for that, JR.
JLo -- “it changed my everything.” She isn’t alone.
Wanna hear more of people saying nice things (what’s new!) about David? Check out this extended discussion on TheArchuletor after his interview w/ KHON2 Wake-Up 2Day re July 4th Promo Tour, Honolulu (1 Jul 2010)
I discovered the above segment in my vid collection. The interview clip was this in case you are wondering
Been waiting for MasterClassLady to be back and am glad she is!
I have been watching the successful journey of so many of my favorite artists, including Michael Buble, David Archuleta, The Canadian Tenors, David Cook, Jason Castro, Jaydee Bixby, Katharine McPhee and Adam Lambert. I do plan to devote more time to these artists in future blog topics but, for now, I would like to give them a standing “0″ for their enormous success during 2010.
I am also anticipating the premiere of Season 10 of American Idol, scheduled for Wednesday, January 19th. I plan to walk into this year’s show with my eyes wide open and give the new format of judges an opportunity to carve their niche during the course of the season. I am hoping and praying that the vocal talent is exceptional, mirroring the enormous success of Season 7.

Pabuckie put together a video of pics to the song Senseless. She captured some pictures of expressions on David’s face that are…to die for. But, of course, That Face! is always nice to look at:
I’m still loving “Senseless.” So David was 17 when he recorded this? Amazing!
MasterClassLady has a post concerning David on Star Search: http://masterclasslady.com/2011/01/08/david-archuleta-on-star-search/

David is taking over SWRV Wednesday -- watch out for it!
http://www.facebook.com/swrv.tv
While waiting for David’s SWRV TakeOver to be shown, check out his NAKED Q1-Q3 interviews
It’s wonderful to see David getting more exposure lately, and even better, more respect. After all of the appearances David has had lately, the little knot of fear is loosening in my chest and that makes me feel sooooo glad.
JR- You’re post about the 1st crush was really sweet. I just had to smile.
One question- Are we going to do The Archie Awards this year?
I already have nominations for best tweet, best TV appearance, best outfit, best quote and best song, to name a few.
cutter12: Hmmm, The Archie Awards. That might be a great way to pass the time (whistling, tapping foot) while we wait for new appearances and a TOUR! from David. Let me see what we can do about that.
CUTTER12 -- Oh, you gave quite an MARLIE an inspiration!
MARLIE -- you will have tons of categories. Can’t wait to see your final list
BTW, am on LSS mode w/ Senseless. That’s the kind of song Asia will go ga-ga over. A little tweaking w/ the production (just put David’s voice upfront please!), that song can be something else. Just sayin…
Here is the YT version of SWRV’s teaser for David’s TakeOver
Can a case be made for applying an idea from literary criticism to the leaked performance of “Senseless”? I believe so.
Many fans — and even David himself –- have at times gotten bogged down in the idea that his music must necessarily be a reflection of his experience, of his relationships, of his biography. Great art cannot and should not be limited in this way.
William Faulkner was certainly not an idiot, but he did a convincing job with his stream-of-consciousness presentation of the idiot Benji Compson’s thoughts in the opening section of “The Sound and the Fury.” Similarly, although David has told us many times that he has never been involved in a relationship, his delivery of “Senseless” transcends his biography.
I am reminded of an issue that some have called the “biographical fallacy” in modern literary/cultural criticism. That term critiques the view that works of creative art, literature, or music can or should be interpreted as reflections of the lives of their authors. Along with the intentional fallacy, that term was introduced by proponents of the New Criticism who wanted to emphasize that works of art “should be interpreted and assessed as constructed artifacts rather than expressions of the emotions of specific individuals” (see the Wikipedia entry for “biographical fallacy”).
For me, David’s performance of “Senseless” is a beautifully constructed artifact that stands very solidly on its own artistically, regardless of whether or not it is rooted in biography. I hope he will give us more.
Oct 2010 pix from SWRV, just posted
http://www.musicchoice.com/swrv/Stuff.aspx?Type=Photos&ID=201010263
Will include this in the RadioTour @ NYC, NY (SWRV) Page, including all vids I posted above
OLEM -- that is quite an incisive take re David’s inclination to stick to what is biographically real even on his craft. I agree with you that David needs to widen his perspective on such things.
Actors inhabit various personas to create their interpretation of movie characters without sacrificing their personal integrity. That should not be far from what a vocal musician may do.
He can also consider the endeavor as lending his voice and interpretation as a service to composers. Cos he is one of the few who could breathe life to a musical piece, make a random listener pay attention, like no other.
Just as you pointed out, what saves ‘Senseless’ from pop mediocrity is his rendition, giving over his musical sensibility to ‘Senseless”, thus elevating it from our regular pop-mush to a soul-tinged love song.
On the other had, look at what this reviewer has to say about Senseless
http://www.teenink.com/reviews/music_reviews/article/283052/Senseless-by-David-Archuleta/
OLEM -- perhaps you can share your opinion about the matter and drop a comment?
JR, thanks for your comments!
Related to my post above, I will add that there are, of course, millions of people with a wealth of experience, with packed biographies, that could not come anywhere near matching David’s delivery of “Senseless.”
In the language of a mathematician, which I am, experience is neither necessary nor sufficient to guarantee the production of a carefully crafted work of art. On the other hand, it seems that David’s “gift” is sufficient to guarantee that.
Marlie -- If you need any help thinking of categories, or coming up with submissions let me know. JR has done a wonderful job saving videos, so hopefully finding them won’t be a chore. (If only all my chores were as fun.)
And, you have to find a category for this clip. It just makes me smile-
Interesting take on the song Senseless, JR. I’m with the author on the fact that David can sing anything, but I disagree on her saying that its not David. That is one of David’s strengths as a performer is his ability to really get into the song and have you believe everything he is singing about. “And So It Goes” is a perfect example of this. No one questions David as he laments about all his previous loves and about his weary heart. Though I prefer the songs that did make it on the album over this one. So, good choice there.
)
(Still nice to hear another song by David.
