‘Idol’ alum kicks off Sun Fun festivities in the Myrtle Beach area -- Archuleta headlines star-studded bash
Three years have passed since David Archuleta finished runner-up on the seventh season of Fox’s “American Idol.”
Like Clay Aiken, Bucky Covington, Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee and Kellie Pickler, just contending for the “Idol” title has turned into longer term success for Archuleta.
“It’s definitely been a great opportunity for me,” the 20-year-old said earlier this month. “It’s allowed me to go to record a bunch of recordings, and I have done two pop albums and a Christmas album, and then leading to my having a book, which is neat, and also to touring: Traveling everywhere to different places and across the United States, and it’s just a whole bunch of experiences I never thought I would really have. It’s been really great.”
Archuleta will headline a list of performers Saturday on Ocean Boulevard for the daylong kickoff to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s 60th annual Sun Fun Festival. Events such as meet-and-greets with Disney Channel and Nickelodeon stars, and a pageant off site, begin after the city’s annual Memorial Day weekend parade, for which U.S. Sen. John McCain is the grand marshal, as part of Myrtle Beach’s annual Military Appreciation Days.
In a phone call from Los Angeles, Archuleta said he splits his time between his “work base” there and with family in his native Utah, his “home base.”
Growing up the son of a trumpeter father and bilingual singer mother bolstered Archuleta’s musical background and appreciation for the arts.
“It’s great to have a family who has a life in music,” he said, “and just growing up around it helped influence me and give me kind of a different perspective on music, and what it does for other people.”
Judging J.Lo
Archuleta said he has kept up pretty well with ensuing seasons of “Idol,” especially this year, with enthusiasm for one new official in particular.

David Archuleta headlines Memorial Day celebration
During a day that will begin with the pomp and circumstance of a John McCain-led parade and end with a bang of Memorial Day fireworks, the day’s real entertainment lies in between with a bevy of musical performances including former American Idol runner-up David Archuleta.
The festivities begin after the parade ends with celebirty meet and greets, food, and arts and crafts vendors and a ton of kid-friendly entertainment that continues until 9:30 p.m. In addition to Archuleta the performers will include Jennette McCurdy, best known for her current role as Sam Puckett on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly,” Noah and Ethan Munck, who play Gibby and Guppy Gibson on “iCarly”; Ariana Grande, best known for her role as Caterina ‘Cat’ Valentine on Nickelodeon’s “Victorious”; Jake T. Austin, who plays Max on Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place”; Doug Brochu, who stars as Grady Mitchell on Disney Channel’s “Sonny with a Chance”; and Zendaya Coleman, best known for her role as Rocky Blue on Disney Channel’s “Shake It Up!”
Since completing his run on season 7 of the hit show, Archuleta has hardly let finishing second slow him down, releasing two studio albums. His debut album “Crush” went platinum and the self-titled single peaked on Billboard’s Hot 100. Now he’s coming to the beach.
We got a chance to catch up with the headliner, 20, early one morning while he was in Los Angeles. Here’s what he had to say about his music and performing in Myrtle Beach.
Myrtle Beach Music: David Archuleta will perform Saturday in downtown Myrtle Beach.
How is your spring going?
It’s been good. I’ve been taking it easy. There have been a lot of changes so I’m just trying to set up the next few months. I’ve been rehearsing with a new band and working on new material. It’s a lot of planning. I’ll be going to Asia this summer and there are a few things I’m doing over there, it’s still being set up, but I’m doing Indonesia and Malaysia.
How long will you be staying in Myrtle Beach?
I’ll be there a couple days I think. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve heard that it is a really nice area, but I’ve never visited. I was in Columbia one time, but never really spent time in Myrtle Beach.
Is there anything you’d like to do while you’re here?
I’m big into eating, so that’s always kind of my thing. I’m always like “Where’s the good place to go eat.”
I’ve never really been golfing. I’ve been mini golfing, but golf is something I really want to get into. I think it would be a sport I’d enjoy.
Before I was like “Man, it doesn’t seem that exciting.” But now I think it would be cool to do. You’re competitive with yourself and not necessarily other people and that’s more my style.
What’s it mean to be a part of a citywide Memorial Day weekend celebration?
I’m excited for it. I think Memorial Day is one of the greatest holidays. I think one of the most important things is to remember those who help give us freedom and influence where we are now.
There are a lot of people who sacrifice for us, and I just like remembering and honoring them. I’ve been studying genealogy and acknowledging what kind of decisions those in the past made and how those decisions affected where you ended up. So I think that’s interesting.
I do always get kind of nervous and jittery, but I know it will be a nice event and I’m excited it’s a family event.
What kind of performance do you have in store for Saturday?
There’s a couple of different songs that I’ve liked and enjoyed listening to that I’ve never really performed before so I think I’ll try some different things at this show.
I’ll be singing songs that are familiar, but I’ll also be doing slight differences in those. I just wanted to try some different things. It will be fun.
just wanted to keep it fun with a few twists to it. I just like family events — they are fun crowds to perform for.

David Archuleta Ruled Myrtle Beach
by AALetta, Yahoo! Contributor Network
This past Saturday was the 60th Annual Sun Fun Festival at Myrtle Beach, SC with appearances by Disney and Nickelodeon stars such as Emily Osment, Jake T. Austin, Ariana Grande and Noah Munck. But after a fun day of
festivities, one special guest made it a night to remember.
David Archuleta headlined the concert for the night, performing for the first time with all his new band members. Always a favorite, a huge chunk of the crowd at Myrtle Beach were there just for him! Singing songs from both his debut and his latest album, The Other Side of Down, with new arrangements and excellence from his band that delighted.
Among his set list were also three covers, two of which he was performing live for the first time. The first cover of the night was “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears. A different sound for David, but he nailed it with the stunning flexibility of his voice as he got lost in the meaning of the song.
The next cover was one that was completely unexpected, but a perfect addition. “Blackbird” by Paul McCartney, also sung by Carly Smithson during David’s season of American Idol. David knocked it out of the park with his soft, tender voice and soulfulness.
Last of the covers was one David performed acoustically not too long ago with only half of his band, and was even better with the full band and larger crowd. “Gotta Get Thru This” by Daniel Bedingfield, once again a different sound for David, but he definitely pulls it off. Halfway through the song David stopped singing to introduce his new bands members. One by one he introduced them as they played their instrument exuberantly, showing off their skills.
It’s safe to say that David is going in a different, but better direction with his music as he takes a new step in his career. Songs like “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “Gotta Get Thru This” are a change for the usual balladeer, but fit his personality better and give him a different voice aside from ballads. And by the looks of the Myrtle Beach turnout, it’s no doubt that David’s fans will be with him every step of the way as he enters this new chapter.

MasterClass Video Of The Day:
David Archuleta Serenades Myrtle Beach
http://wp.me/pIgh-1Oj
First of all, a special thank you to the best fans in the world – the David Achuleta fans – for your tweets and emails re David’s recent performance in Myrtle Beach.
These performances of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird” were just exceptional.
As always, David brought his musically skilled and nuanced vocal energy to this Myrtle Beach engagement. This 20-year-old artist sings with such sophistication and poise, always showing enormous respect for the music and the lyrics.
I fell in love with David’s vision for “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. Sandwiching the main upbeat portion of this number between the slower beginning and end was truly inspired. The “welcome to your life” coming full circle was very well done.
Yet, at the center of both vocal performances, was a refined technical foundation that so many listeners may not truly understand or realize. The relaxation of the knees, the wonderfully sustained vowels, the light, British approach to the “r” consonant, the strong diaphragmatic breathing skills, all blended together to create a magical musical experience.
These videos also gave me an opportunity to hear David in the company of his new band.
And, they are truly excellent. I loved their gentle background vocals during the “Blackbird” number and the skillful musical energy they imparted during “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”.
Their musical talent was a perfect fit for David’s. It is very apparent that all the musicians share an identical musical compass and standard.
It is so comforting to know that some things do not – and should not – change. David, you are a reassuring and constant treasure in our lives, always embracing the highest of standards in your musical journey.
Have a listen and voice your comments. Honestly, both videos will bring a great big grin to your face.

DA @ TV33South Interview
JR, thanks so much for the explanation of your avatar! And what a wonderful story; I’m glad you were finally able to get the t-shirt signed. I had actually googled the words “ciudad” and “pig” to see what it would come up with. Also, I hope you get to interview David again in July.
Love the TV33 interview!
1:54-1:57 David asks: “When is the right time for everything.”
NOW, David, NOW!!
Loved the interview. That was one of the times he was most articulate. His comfort with expressing himself is improving by leaps and bounds. And yes, David, please work on that US tour opportunity
Desertrat -- The pig is David’s logo, right? cos that’s what his surname refers to (pork)? The bonus was the pig having wings so how could I resist it?! Ciudad is spanish for city, so I dunno what its relevance to the winged pig but since it is in spanish… The whole shirt speaks of David to me, LOL
David really liked it too so I had one made for him -- my daughter made it for me. And I was actually finding some ways to send it to him. Good thing he’s coming over this July. Let’s hope I can get it to him
Yea! I got signed in. Thank you JR and Marlie for keeping things going here. Jr,keeping all these videoes etc is so appreciated. Love the interview.
Love the story about the Pig with angel wings. David looked so fantastic there JR. I’m surprised you survived. July should be fantastic.
Loved Masterclasslady’s review.
It is only now that am thoroughly enjoying the vids from MB.
Am teary eyed.
He is no longer a boy.
The way he moves, commands his band, song choices, his vibrato (gah!) The simple tweaks he did to his “old” songs and the fresh take on the covers…
One thing’s certain, he belongs on stage.
Indeed, “welcome to your life…”
Hey HEIDIJOY! welcome to TDC!
Glad that you like what you are seeing here. Kinda quiet most of the time but for now the important thing is we continue with chronicling David’s journey -- what could be more enjoyable?
Don’t be shy to stick around and I do look forward to hearing from you, Portia & Cootiedoc about our favorite guy
@Freofan
Back home after a fabulous trip to MB. Loved the new band’s sound and David coming out afterward to greet fans was so kind!
MJ posted the 2 covers that David did last night and he is getting good reviews from MJ veterans.
But I find this comment quite interesting:
jonnyk says:
05/29/2011 at 10:00 pm
I agree with someone who said that his voice has depths and emotions along with multiple colors. When he sang Gotta Get Thru This for the first time, his fans asked one of band members who rearranged the song, and he said David did mostly. David recreated the song with a completely different vibe and it sounded more soulful and easier to ears.
His ability to change up songs is well known among fans, and he gets better and better as he matures. Blackbird, Fields of Gold, Bubbly showcase his beautiful soothing tone of voice.

RE the comment you posted from someone on MJ’s Blog -- As I was watching and listening to those three covers, along with A Thousand Miles and is AI Party version of Crazy, it struck me how David seems to change the melody, the runs, the pace and timing of a song to fit his personal interpretation of the song. To apply those techniques (and I think it is quite instinctive for him) to enhance the meaning of the lyrics.
Hence the explanation from him of “my own personal meaning” before the EWTRTW.
He’s growing and maturing in his ability -- learning to harness the musicality that pours out of him, and with a band that can collaborate and bring new life to the music, too, I think David is in for the ride of his life -- in a very good way.
Added the MB set of 8throwcenter, emily4archie & shelleyFOD -- so plenty of HD/HQ vids to choose from -- the fans really missed him performing

David Archuleta -- Myrtle Beach, May 2011
The Joy of Watching
David’s music in its constantly evolving urgency and complexity invites even the casual listener to become obsessive. To listen to his live performances is to give in to the urge to compare them and parse their difference. His superlative stage presence appeals to all listeners. His audience leans close to listen for each distinctive qualities of his performance which is a rewarding experience.
He gave a rousing performance at Myrtle Beach Saturday night, one which allowed him to assume complete control of the assembled crowd as he moved across the stage. There was a certain amount of professionalism to the way in which he carried himself and the energy he brought to the performance was remarkable. It’s refreshing to watch how he ultimately pulled everything together to increase the intensity of his set even further.
He seemed to find new methods of interpreting songs, altering either the pace or his phrasing which lace his songs with a raw emotional edge. Is he seeking to further his crossover potential and expand his audience? He delivers the goods every single performance with potent emotional expressions. And when David sings a line, for that moment anyway, you know that he means it with every ounce of sweat coming off his brow.
David is just one of the most fantastic, natural sounding singers. He doesn’t try to articulate like anybody else, he is himself. He can slowdown and elaborate a piece, morphing it to a dramatic performance, and then David can stomp on the accelerator and rip through it like a locomotive.
David is backed by a band that is as tight as a well oiled machine. These guys play it like they mean it.
It was a memorable night; it was just the joy of music, the joy of rhythm, the joy of energy. It was the joy of David Archuleta.

May be nice to drop her a line or two for the continued coverage she does on David
From the videos, it seems a good number of fans drove or flew to see this performance of David and his new band (I love them, by the way). I’m hoping for some more performance dates in the US -- and the scads of videos from the Asia trip. It is shaping up to be a good summer -- let’s hope that US tour David mentioned can get some traction. My frequent flyer miles are burning a hole in my pocket.
Wow JR -- I just got over to the Season 7 AI Tour page -- fantastic! We had the full AI Season, but no one had done a tour page that was comprehensive. I love it.
Be sure to check it out, all>

An interesting comment was posted a few minutes ago by TV33south, the YouTube user who posted the video above.
“Watched David during his time on American Idol but honestly was rooting for David Cook. After hearing David A. live and meeting him I have to say I am a very big fan now. He sounds fantastic in person. Watching him on TV does not do him justice. A US tour would go a long way to helping him really break out…”
olemr: And where have they been? Hahaha. They are right, though, seeing him live is like nothing else (although I sure love to see him on TV and events like ALMA awards!)
My feeling is that it will take David a little time to shed the tween idol image that some plastered him with, and for a new set of fans to “discover” him. He was never “just” a tween heartthrob, if anyone bothered to look and listen to him sing and to his interviews. Sure, he’s gorgeous and young, but that shouldn’t pigeonhole him into the tween magazine set.
David’s musical sensibility is much more sophisticated than that and now that he is a free agent, perhaps he can express that in his own way. I liked hearing him say he was working on writing “the right way” this time -- less rush, perhaps fewer divergent influences. Seems he worked with so many song-writers it must have been hard to find his own voice in the writing process.
And he’s young, got lots of time to find his way, really (although I’m as impatient as the next avid fan LOL).
Now David Archuleta is a case study! Watch this as teacher uses his experience with DA & his fans to highlight internet’s impact
MNL CONCERT BUZZ
David Archuleta strikes three in Manila; concert set in July
By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ
MANILA, Philippines – Less than a year since his last visit to Manila, singer-songwriter David Archuleta returns to the country on July 18 for a solo concert.
The announcement of the “American Idol” Season 7 runner-up’s Manila show, which will be held at the Araneta Coliseum at 8 p.m., came through the official website and Twitter account of the said venue on May 16. Record store Astroplus as well as Manila Concert Scene also relayed the news through their respective Twitter pages on Monday.
The announcement coincided with what Archuleta’s fans branded as the second “anniversary” of the 20-year-old baby-faced crooner’s first visit in the country in 2009 for his concert with “Idol” Season 7 champ David Cook.
Speculations that Archuleta will be in Manila for the third time have been flying around social networking sites for a few weeks now, following Archuleta’s surprising video blog on YouTube last May 5 announcing that he’s doing a concert in Indonesia on July 16. There, he also hinted about his upcoming treat for his other Asian fans.
Aside from his concert with Cook, Archuleta visited the Philippines last November to promote his latest album, “The Other Side Of Down.”
