David Archuleta in Malaysia!
When the Fan Factor Rules
When the 2011 Asian Tour was announced, Malaysia was not among the destinations mentioned. That prompted our Archie cousins in these parts to launch a major campaign with Sony Music Malaysia to make sure that KL is in David’s tour map.
Well, we all know that no one messes with an Archie – make that a throng of Archies – with a mission

NewsStraitTimes reports --
Malaysian girls really cool, says Archuleta
Female fans of silky tenor David Archuleta screamed his name and clapped delightedly when the American Idol 2008 runner-up appeared at the Kuala Lumpur Hilton Hotel yesterday.
Fresh from a showcase in Vietnam, the 20-year-old from Utah is to perform a full concert tonight at Stadium Negara, presented by his distribution label, Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia.
This is the first time Sony Music is arranging an artiste’s concert, “all because of Facebook requests from fans”, said the label’s managing director, Adrian Lim, at a press conference at KL Hilton.
Archuleta said he thought Malaysian girls “are really cool”, adding that he remembered the large crowd of fans the last time he gave a mini-concert at Sunway Lagoon in 2009.
He also announced the Asian Tour Edition of The Other Side of Down, which will have five new singles and karaoke versions of the original music videos of Crush, Touch My Hand, and Something ‘Bout Love, among other songs.
Archuleta also commented on the death of British singer Amy Winehouse on Saturday.
“I know she had gone through a difficult life. She made some great music which had a huge impact on the music industry. I encourage people to get out of any kind of addiction. You can do it if you are motivated.”
Winehouse shot to fame with Rehab, and won five Grammy Awards in 2008.
Archuleta has a combined album sales of 19,000 units locally, reaching the Platinum status.
Tickets for the 8pm concert range from RM90 for free seating to RM300 for VIP. Get them through Ticket Charge (www.ticketcharge.com.my) and AirAsia RedTix outlets (www.AirAsiaRedTix.com).

Galaxie Blog reports --
David Des not Do Drugs
Cutie pie David Archuleta arrived in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon and at a press conference several hours ago, he was presented with a plaque marking his six times platinum status by Sony Music Malaysia and a wau as a souvenir.
http://galaxieblog.com.my/blog/photos/2011/7/25/evelynt4641_1.jpg
David expressed sadness at the news of Amy Winehouse’s sudden passing: “I know she’d gone through a lot and she lived a very difficult life but she has made some great music which has made a huge impact on the music industry. It’s sad to see her go.”
When asked if he ever took drugs, David, although a little surprised by the question given his squeaky clean image, answered it like a pro.
http://galaxieblog.com.my/blog/photos/2011/7/25/evelynt4641_2.jpg
“I can say that that’s something I’m not involved in,” he said. “I try to encourage kids of all ages if there’s something that they’ve become quite addicted to… I do believe that if you’re motivated enough to get out of it, you can get out of it. I just hope that if anyone is struggling with that, I know that they can improve their lives by getting out of it.”
For the concert tomorrow night, David may perform Touch My Hand because he revealed that it was one of his favourite songs. “It’s a song that’s meant to be performed live,” he told the roomful of press and invited fans. “It’s meant to describe what it is like to be on stage and to see the crowd and what it feels like to share that moment with someone there at the show.”
http://galaxieblog.com.my/blog/photos/2011/7/25/evelynt4641_3.jpg
There’s no doubt after today that David loves his Malaysian fans because he distinctly remembers his last trip: “I do remember coming here last time when I did the showcase. I always remember that experience and I remember all the Malaysian fans that were there and were at the airport too. I’m really excited to come and do a full concert in Malaysia because the fans have been very supportive. I’m just preparing many of the popular songs from the albums that are released and a few covers that I like to sing. I just hope that the Malaysian fans enjoy it.”
We’re sure they will David!

I’ve been in a David mood this morning, looking at some old TDC articles and was so happy to see the brand spanking new update today! Thanks for the montage and updates, JR! You are amazing as always!
And of course it’s great to see David’s star so high among my Asian peeps. I suppose the music industry is not as image-focused and jaded as the American one is. But please David, I hope you find more success at home! All in due time. But at present of you remind me of another David from the 80s and 90s. (Though to this day I still don’t quite get David Hasselhoff’s appeal home or abroad lol.)

This guy wrote a review of the concert and ended it w/ pix & concert highlights set to Heaven
Here is his blog entry
i just got back from probably…one of the most powerful performances ever. His rise to fame was based on his vocal abilities and a humble background, David Archuleta performed in front of an Arch Angel crowd on the 26th of July at Stadium Negara. The opening act was….
i forgot his name, i know he introduced himself and the host also mentioned his name but i totally forgot. for a minute there i thought i came for a K-Pop concert. but this guy is good though, he can dance, look out for him! Shortly after, the strong crowd of at least 5,000 roared as the lights dimmed to start the show and out came Archie!
he sang all his popular tunes such as “something bout love”, “falling stars”, “elevator” and ending his 1 hour 30 minute set with “crush”. in between originals he also did covers from Gnarls Barkley (Crazy) and Bryan Adams (Heaven) which showcased this kid’s phenomenal voice which almost made him an American Idol winner (well he’s doin much better than David Cook)
i made a video of his performance here in Malaysia, and the background music is him playing a cover of Bryan Adam’s heaven, that was my fav performance of the night. enjoy! and share it!

Stupendous coverage of the entire Asian trip JR and Marlie, THANK YOU. Amazing fandom going on, great to see how David is treated and how he responds with his music.
Portia -- Thank you!
I’ve been so impressed with the Asian tour -- for several reasons. The fans -- showing the LOVE! David’s Band -- adding richness and interest to the shows -- a perfect group of talented young men to compliment each other and David.
And….David. Every concert, his voice has been magnificent, his energy off the charts, and his performances filled with new and exciting moments, dance moves, runs and wails.
Now, what is the schedule for the US Christmas Tour? LOL Gearing up to buy my tickets!

Thank You Marlee and Jr and all the fans who so generously filmed the soundchecks and concerts for us. What a tour! David just keeps getting better and I’m loving the band.
Any news on Naree’s interview?
No news yet. They are probably still reeling from the TheArchuletor, tee-hee
He really surprised a lot of the female celebrities and journos here. Cos most of them still remember him as the 16/17yo kid from AI.
He is now grown up. The David on TV is ATM away from David in person circa 2011.
Such a heartbreaker!
HOT MAGAZINE Post-Concert coverage
Did (you) touch Archie’s hand?
It was a fan-o-palooza at Stadium Negara yesterday! Why? David Archuleta was in town, and we were pretty worried we might be trampled in the stampede! David was down in Malaysia as part of the Asian leg of his The Other Side of Down tour, and we made sure that we did not miss it!
David’s fans were at the venue a good three hours before the concert started, just to take in the ambiance and hopefully get a sneak peek at the young star. As usual, our shutterbugs were out SPOTTING the flock of fans, and we were more than happy to snap the many smiling faces and adorable signs.
At the concert, we were treated to an upbeat Hao Ren, who opened for Archie for a second time! You guys might remember Hao Ren as one of the two opening acts during Archie’s last stint in Malaysia, at the Sunway Amphitheater.
A mere few minutes later, the crowd screamed their lungs out as their kind of perfect, David himself, stepped on stage and opened with ‘Stomping on Roses.’
With an awesome song set that included his hit songs and awesome covers (including Vanessa Carlton and Tears For Fears), Archie kept the fans entertained and on their feet the whole time. If you were there at the concert, you were either a fan and if you were not a fan before, we’re sure you are now.
And if you were at the concert, chances are we SPOTTED you! Let us know if we caught a shot of you in our comment box.
Also don’t forget to check out our video of fans talking about why they love David! There’s also a marriage proposal in there. Here’s hoping David will see it!

CONCERT REVIEW from THE MALAY MAIL (this review also appeared in YAHOO MALAYSIA NEWS!)
A happy concert
by Anu Venugopal
Thursday, July 28th, 2011 15:45:00
BABYFACE David Archuleta showed that he had the skills to thrill young fans on Tuesday evening at his first ever, full-blown concert in Malaysia.
On his second visit to our shores, the 20-year-old Utah native belted out his own popular tunes as well as giving a spin on some classic hits for thousands of fans at Stadium Negara for an hour and a half, as part of his ‘The Other Side of Down’ tour.
Scheduled to start at 8pm, concert goers began to fill up the stadium from 7.30pm onwards. Although the stadium was nowhere close to being packed, there was a whole lot of love for David within the stadium grounds, with clusters of fans singing out his hit Something ‘Bout Love before there were any signs of the concert starting.
Upcoming homegrown artiste Hao Ren, who is under the organiser Sony Music label, appeared on stage at 8.30pm, signalling the start of the concert and for fans, it was time to scream more so for David then Hao Ren. After singing only one song with the help of dancers, the winner of two awards at the 2011 MYAstro Music Awards, gave the audience a little introduction before leaving the stage for David.
After his band appeared, fans did not have to wait too long for their ‘Idol’ to come on stage. Showing off his Bahasa Malaysia skills with “Apa khabar Malaysia?”, he launched into his first song Stomping The Roses and moving along to the title of his tour The Other Side of Down.
The 2008 American Idol runner-up then got the crowd excited with his hit A Little Too Not Over You and gave a little advise about love before going on to Love Don’t Hate.
However, the youthful David got most attention when he went on to sing the upbeat number Something ‘Bout Love -- which got the fans both young and old singing along with him.
David also showed a more mature side of him when he sang a cover of Tears For Fears hit, Everybody Wants To Rule The World. The girls in the audience got a sneak peak to his own Miss Right, in his single My Kind of Perfect. Many were seen moving their colourful glow sticks in tune with the tender ballad.
Thanking his fans after every song, David shared his dreams through the catchy song Elevator, which was another hit among the audience. After introducing his band, he revealed that he misses his mother when he tours and sang Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles to remember her and touched many with his skills on the piano.
While fans went into a frenzy for the sweet-faced singer, he continued to entertain with Falling Stars before getting more approval from the crowd with his popular tune Touch My Hand. He gave the older audience , many consisting of parents of fans, something to enjoy with Stand By Me, a song made popular by Ben EKing.
Calling it a night with Zero Gravity, the singer was enthusiastically jumping around the stage, much to the delight of the fans. His short disappearance backstage also saw fans shrieking more for him, which is obliged with three more songs, including a slow and smooth version of Gnarles Barkley’s Crazy on piano. Ending it with another cover Heaven by Bryan Adams and his own hit Crush, the singer thanked his fans before making an exit.
David’s naturally friendly personality, strong voice, and joyful smiles made it a happy concert experience for all there.

David Archuleta Talks New Music And Getting Starstruck
Not everything we talked about with David Archuleta made it into the 17-31 July issue of Galaxie magazine. So as a bonus for you Archie fans, here’s the rest of the interview session…
Will you continue to write uplifting music or will it be something different for the new material?
I think it can be motivating by being able to relate to people. And it be as real as it can. Be as true to me as it can. That’s just another thing that I’m looking forward to. Being able to have the music not just with the words I’m saying but the way it sounds. Music says so much. Classical music doesn’t have any words but it still says so much. I’m hoping to be able to really take time to define my sound, my music.
What’s the inspiration behind your new music?
The inspiration, I guess the best way to describe it is what’s on my mind. What’s going on in my head, it’s hard for me to explain sometimes and I feel like for the first time, I am kinda able to bring it out. I guess that’s the way I would describe the direction I’m going in right now.
You’ll be 21 this year. Any big plans?
No, not really [laughs]. I always like to go out and eat and spend time with my family and friends. Nothing too crazy. I like to keep it pretty low-key.
With so much going on right now, do you still have plans to go back to school?
Yeah, I don’t think that there’s ever a time when it is too late to go back to school. I would love to take music classes. I love the heart of music and the emotion but I never really got to understand the musical theory and the more technical side of music. That’s something I’d love to learn more about. Performing and putting out music is my No. 1 priority right now so that’s what I’m focusing most on. I’m a very spontaneous person unfortunately. A lot of times that can be a bad thing but I try to be sensitive to whatever I feel and whatever changes in what I feel I should do. And keeping in tune with whatever your instincts kind of say.
Have there been any celebs that have left you starstruck?
I was starstruck by Ringo Starr. I was so starstruck that I couldn’t even go up to him. I was pretty starstruck with Bono too.
These Asia concerts have been so full of win! Especially the Vietnam portion of the tour. The video and photo the fans made for David were very clever and sweet. And there were so many treasured nuggets in the videos. Like when the fans serenaded David, presenting him flowers, and I especially liked the man who wiped David’s face and then wanted a picture, even as security guards were trying to usher him off the stage. David dancing! David letting loose and going crazy on the drums! HEAVEN! CRAZY! The airport scenes! See, this tour has just been so much fun! It has been quite exciting to read and view all the stories & videos.
I can still find a LOT of videos scattered across Vietnam & Malaysia sites about David’s recently concluded Asian Tour. And I haven;t finished the Manila videos -- whew!
LOL David really caused a stir in Asia, now that he is all grown up
Here is a set of pix featured by MSN Malaysia. I have set it to the MY concert’s MKOP, for obvious reasons
MARLIE -- would you like to load the whole Manila Concert up to our streaming video?
I just read that David is now headed to Japan. Woohoo! It’s great to see David performing all over the world. I wonder if Jazzy is going to get to go with him? I remember a blog or vlog where he mentions how his sister loves the Japanese culture and if he ever got to go there he should take her.
More concert reviews popping up,this one from The Sun Daily
A crush on Archuleta
Thrilling his fans to bits with his vocal prowess, Archuleta’s concert here was the last leg of his The Other Side of Down Asia Tour.
However, at a press conference held the day before the concert, he seemed nervous and tongue-tied. The humble 21-year-old’s hectic schedule may have had something to do with it as his press meet was held barely a couple of hours after he arrived in Kuala Lumpur. Furthermore, he had to rush off to Fahrenheit 88 for a meet-the-fans session.
Nonetheless, fresh from his performances in Vietnam and Indonesia, Archuleta was full of praise for his Asian fans. “I released an Asian tour edition of my last album, The Other Side of Down, which has five additional songs and I’m just really excited to share them with my fans in Asia. It’s kind of a way for me to say a big thank you to all of my fans here for supporting me all this while,” he said.
When Archuleta took to the stage to perform at Stadium Negara that night, he was extremely energetic and cheerful, proving that singing is truly his forte.
Local singer Choo Hao Ren and his dance crew, The Mustang Crew, opened the concert with a pulsating number, Wu Gong. It was enough to get the 3,500-strong crowd all hyped up and ready for Archuleta’s performance.
Fans screamed as loudly as they could when Archuleta jumped on stage with his band. The VVIP and VIP area in front of the stage became a rock zone as everyone abandoned their chairs, stood up and grooved to Archuleta’s opening track, Stomping the Roses.
Without pausing, he continued with two more fast tracks, The Other Side of Down and A Little Too Not Over You, and then slowed down with Love Don’t Hate and Something ’bout Love. Archuleta also showed off his piano skills as he performed two songs solo while playing on the piano.
He sang My Kind of Perfect, which he called his own love song, and Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Mile which, he said, reminded him of his mother each time he travels for his live tours. Fans delightfully sang along with him when he rendered A Thousand Mile.
Archuleta also covered Tears For Fears’ Everybody Wants to Rule the World and he mentioned that it was one of his favourite songs. “I take the message in this song to my heart. Sometimes, there are people who try to tell you what you can and cannot do. But I’m a big believer that if you have a dream, you should just go for it and believe in yourself!” he told his fans.
As if it was American Idol all over again, Archuleta also covered Ben E. King’s Stand By Me, Bryan Adam’s Heaven and Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy. Once again, he sang Crazy solo accompanied by the piano.
When he performed the cheeky and upbeat tune, Elevator, he orchestrated the audience to singalong with him and it was just really fun to see him running happily from one end of the stage to the other.
Archuleta also sang Falling Stars, Everything and More, Touch My Hand and Zero Gravity, before bidding goodbye to his fans with his biggest hit, Crush.
Archuleta’s interaction with his fans was very good. It was quite clear that he is very grateful to his fans. In fact throughout the concert, he thanked them profusely for coming to his show.
His vocal performance was extremely powerful and he was in top form the entire night. It was certainly one of the best vocal performances I had ever seen so far. Those who did not catch this concert had missed out on watching one of the best vocalists from American Idol in action. {highlighting mine]

American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta came, sang and conquered the hearts of his fans with ease, writes SUBHADRA DEVAN
DAVID Archuleta, at a mere 173cm (the same height as kungfu exponent Donnie Yen), is a powerhouse when it comes to music.
At his first full concert here last Tuesday, the American Idol Season 7 runner-up delivered song after song, to the screams of girls.
The venue, Stadium Negara, was three-quarters filled and it was obvious that the tweens, teens and everyone else seemed happy just to hear Archuleta sing “live”.
Despite the deafening screams and a sound system that left a boom in my ears, there was a convivial family-like atmosphere at the stadium.
In slacks and wearing a shirt over a T-shirt, the 20-year-old from Utah bounced around the stage without the need of a backup dance group, singing his heart out for his fans.
He sat down at the keyboard a few times, including for the ballad, A Thousand Miles, giving the Vanessa Carlton hit an R&B twist.
He also performed another keyboard solo, this time for Crazy (a hit for hip-hop artiste Gnarls Barkley), turning it into a ballad.
He told the crowd that he did Crazy for Idol 7’s Hollywood Week. I remember he was 16 then, but four years later, his performance “live” is even more moving.
Archuleta also gave a rendition of a few new songs found on the repackaged 2011 The Other Side Of Down: Asia Tour Edition.
This tour is in part to promote the album and, of course, a response to his fans who called for a concert on Facebook. That’s girl power on the Internet!
The new songs he sang included the pop Stomping The Roses and pop-ballad Everything & More.
Dripping with sweat three-quarters into the 90-minute show, he took a break before returning to the stage for his encore songs which included the Bryan Adams’ hit, Heaven.
Archuleta’s Kuala Lumpur concert was the last on his Asian Tour showcase. He had performed in Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam before he arrived here on Monday.
Before the concert, presented by his distribution label Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia, Archuleta also met fans who were winners of various contests.
He sang 17 songs. My favourites included the 1970s Elevator (despite the use of auto-tune) and Zero Gravity (for its pop-rock beat). Of course, there’s also his irresistible bouncing on stage.
The 1980s Tears For Fears hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World was a blast from my past! I enjoyed Archuleta’s impassioned rendition but I think the icing on the cake was the final encore, Crush. The band also had a good time, at times sounding like a metal group.
Yes, as Archuleta sang in another hit, Touch My Hand, “I can’t let the music stop, can’t let this feeling end”. We all felt it that Tuesday night, leaving the stadium — demurely — with smiles pasted on our faces.
His other side
AT the Monday Press conference, silky tenor David Archuleta whetted fans’ appetite for his concert when he sang a few bars of Stevie Wonder’s Lately.
It was in response to a query on who he’d like to collaborate with. His reply was: “Right now, at this moment, Stevie Wonder. It’s just him at the keyboard, and that’s just cool.”
He also thought Malaysian girls “are really cool”, adding that he remembered the large crowd of fans at his mini-concert in Sunway Lagoon back in 2009.
With oblique references to his own hit singles, Archuleta replied to queries about crushes with “I don’t have a crush lately” and that “I’m waiting for my kind of perfect”.
He also announced the Asian Tour Edition of The Other Side Of Down, which will have five new singles and karaoke versions of the original music videos of Crush, Touch My Hand and Something ‘Bout Love, among other songs.
Revealing another side to his character, Archuleta said he had visited leprosy camps in Chennai, as part of Rising Star Outreach, early this year. He told Life & Times: “It was a very humbling experience. It just makes you appreciate things more and gives you a different perspective.” — By SUBHADRA DEVAN

Tooling around youtube and I stumble upon this video I’ve never seen before:
Finally, after xxxx times trying to log in, Marlie answered my email -- thank you too Heidijoy for the tip.
Been a looong time lurker here -- I just want to let you guys know that I no longer feel ‘insane’ -- I hid my fangirling, admiration, etc..etc because my family and friends made fun of me, sometimes calling me ‘buang’ (crazy). You have been great in sharing everything about David -- you are all open and candid in your love for David -- I thank everyone for your kindness and acceptance.
I got the ATE cd today -- omg, David is sooo gorgeous there -- mama mia, the One above really poured out ALL His wondrous blessings on David and so much more! Thank you JR for sending it to me plus a surprise too -- a cd of his concert at the Araneta plus the M&G at SM Mega Mall.
I hope to see David one day, that is my dream.
I am already rambling -- so back once more to the shadows. Have a great weekend everyone!
mslv: So glad you got in! Yes, we are all a little “buang” about David.
I gave up trying to keep quiet about it. I tell people, if they don’t like it, then just keep quiet about it. My family doesn’t even blink when I say I’m saving up for a couple of David concerts in the fall (Christmas tour!). They just nod and say, “That will be fun.” hahaha.
Even at work people ask how David’s Asian tour went (becuase, of course, I had to tell them he was going!).
So, mslv, you are welcome here among the rest of us crazies!
MSLV / MLV / Marisol -- yes we are “buang” about David and proud of it, LOL
MSLV is the Cebu fan one who sent the huge box of goodies to David. Check her story again here -- http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/2011/07/when-an-autograph-means-everything-more/
MSLV VLM, So glad you were able to get into the site with Marlie’s help. JR So nice of you to make sure David got VLM’s gift and provided her with a tape and autograph etc.
Marlie I believe that tape of David singing Contago D was at the International Gala where David danced with his Mom and they were able to talk about their trip to Honduras and thank the group for their help. Taping was forbidden but a few snuck out without description. Thanks for the find. (I could be wrong but the outfit looks familiar)
heidijoy: Yes, I believe you are right about the Gala. The clothes are from there. I had seen a different video with snippets of the song, but this one was posted just the other day, and I hadn’t seen a full Contigo from that event. Love when he sings that ♥
I have several videos from the event. Posted them before to my JRforDA11 channel but it was suspended. No time yet to resurrect them, LOL
HEIDIJOY -- thanks for alerting us about VLM’s note in TheVoice.
VLM/MLSV -- am looking forward to hear what your husband after watching the concert
