The Sounds game (minor league baseball) was awesome!! There were around 60 missionaries singing the national anthem and the owner (or whatever of the team/field -- idk, some high up dude) told President Hutchings that the way we sang the anthem is how it should be sung every time. NEAT! Go Mormons!

While there I met David Archuleta. I went to go buy a Sounds baseball hat (which totally rocks btw) and I was like “wow that guys short… WOW thats David Archuleta!!” So I walked right up to him and was like “hey, can I get a pic with you?” He said sure, so we started talking and I got him laughing and we had a jolly good ol time of about 45 seconds

From idol to missionary

David Archuleta started his two-year mission in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Wednesday 28 March, this year, when he entered the Missionary Training Center (MTC for its acronym in English) in Provo, Utah.

Three months after announcing his decision to serve a full-time mission in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the pop singer has entered the MTC.

Archuleta made the announcement before a performance on December 19, 2011 in the Concert Hall Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Although the exact details of his mission are unknown, Archuleta released his supporters in a video on Youtube, on Wednesday, which was to serve somewhere in South America. A family friend said Archuleta family served a mission in Chile, but the family intends to keep the exact location of his mission as a private matter.

“It’s a decision everyone knows, but it is a very personal thing. I wanted to keep it that way, so I hope you can respect that decision,” said the Queen of pop cansión 21 years of age. “I have been able to share with you on this trip so far, but I hope you can understand and that this is a personal matter, I’m trying to concentrate on anything now, not in my career, nor will I make music.”

The last few weeks before his departure, he worked for his latest recording which will be released while he served as a missionary.

In a message he left on a seven-minute video and posted on Youtube, Archuleta says it’s not a goodbye but a see you later.

Also asked his followers to support his decision and promised that within two years will continue with his musical projects.

Archuleta was a young man who has stood by the love for your family and everyone who has the opportunity, your free time is dedicated to family fraternity.

That’s why the last week before his departure, his relatives in Florida, California and Georgia gathered in Utah, to share with him, special moments that will lead to great memories.

“More than sad, I’m proud of this step that David has. The last days were days filled with happiness, joy and great spiritual experiences. I am very excited to see who will be his first baptism,” says Martha Mayorga, aunt of the young .

Meanwhile her grandfather, Alfredo Mayorga said they have always respected the decisions of his grandson and who will accompany him in your prayers and thoughts.

“He has made a very noble and spiritual growth will help in your approach and the Savior Jesus Christ.”

Archuleta thanked her many fans for their support over the years, numerous times in the video, saying he appreciates everything he has done throughout his career as a singer.

In his video on Youtube, he reiterated his return, “Just a vlog more from my home at this time before I left for my mission. It was a week with many emotions and I just wanted to thank you all for the support I have occurred in the past four years. see you all when I return in two years. ”

hi! well this week was normal. everything has far extended its welcome at the MTC! i love the mtc but at times it can really just make you want to get into the field! i love being in the classroom studying spanish. i do not like the food. my companion does whatever he wants whenever he can and he tells everyone their problems. he sleeps all day in class and is hardley learning any spanish. o well! the only thing i can do is just love him and do what is right. anyway i love this gospel and i would do anything i am asked to make the work progress. i sang in the saturday afternoon seccion of conference! it was pretty cool! so i was sitting in the waiting area just waiting to go into the statium and some kid started to talk to me, i talked to him for about a half hour before i realized who he was. its strange to be talking to a celebrity and not even know it. ya david archuleta was talking to me, it was pretty cool. so we talked for a few more minutes. i am so excited to serve a mission and so ready to go into the field as soon as possible!!!! adios!!!

Yes Mom, haha Elder Archuletta is in the MTC. In fact, we were hosting when he came in and he showed up in a Mercedes at a different entrance so people wouldn’t rush him. It’s funny with the buzz going around about him. But we are all have the same purpose and are all called to do the same thing; preach the gospel

We took a break and while I was sitting eating the snacks they gave us, Elder Achuletta was there and I didn’t realize he was standing by my chair and didn’t get a chance to say “hi” because two other Elder approached him. So then, we filed out and went into the conference center. SOOO cool being up there. I remember Travis got a chance to sing in a priesthood session once… right? He actually stood where Elder A stood.

… So funny story of the week. Elder Andersen sang next to Elder Archuleta in conference, Google the picture-you’ll see his face. We were teaching our investigator and we asked if he watched conference, he pulled up his laptop and showed me a clip of me singing, we asked if he saw andersen, he slid a leather folder frame to him-a pic of him singing with archuleta hahaha, we have since gotten at least 6 pics of that with more on the way. but we are actually good friends with Elder Archuleta, we go jogging with him everyday and help him with his Spanish and how to approach teaching people. he is a great Elder and im so excited for him. No i cant tell you where he is going or get anything signed, but after the mission we’ll hangout again, we’re like some of his only friends.

There were a couple new missionaries in the room and they said the MTC announced that there was a celebrity coming to the MTC and to not become a distraction to anyone`s MTC study by asking for pictures and autographs. What is David Archuleta up to at Mormon Missionary Training Center? His elders & sisters tell all

Murray native and “American Idol” finalist David Archuleta began his journey to become a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by entering Missionary Training Center in late March.

It was thought that once he went inside the doors of the secretive Provo institution, the 21-year-old would be out of the public eye for about two years, spending about 10 weeks at MTC and then the rest of his time in his assigned mission, reportedly in Chile.

But this is an age where social media breaks down ramparts and bulwarks, no matter how much Elder Archuleta desires his pious privacy. As a consequence, the public and his fans have been able to read about his experiences through blog posts written by fellow elders and sisters at MTC.

“I’ve been officially star struck,” wrote Sister Emily Lewis. “I just drooled over him when he was on “‘American Idol.’”

“David Archuleta entered the MTC yesterday, and I’ll try to get a picture with him,” wrote Elder Abel Hemenway, assigned to Paraguay. “But it won’t be an easy task since all the sister missionaries are always around him and everywhere he goes … I can tell he doesn’t like the attention because he wanted to have a normal mission, but hey, what did he expect, I mean, he is famous.”

“Last week as Wednesday approached, the rumors started flying that the great DA would be entering the MTC,” wrote Sister Elise Marquitta Leavitt. “When Wednesday came, I was literally sick to my stomach thinking that the ONLY ‘celebrity’ I have ever loved or cared about would be here!”

Although the websites where these letters are posted seem to be a personal website — with sites usually associated with Blogspot and Missionsite.net — in reality the websites are usually set up by families to let others know about how their missionary sons and daughters are faring.

“Missionaries are encouraged to write weekly to family often through e-mail,” said Scott Trotter, spokesman for the Church. “Generally, blogs documenting the experiences of missionaries are maintained by family members or friends from home. Often these blogs draw upon letters or photos sent by the missionary. The Church has no policy related to these blogs beyond general guidelines provided in the Church Handbook.”

The Church Handbook states: “Members are encouraged to be examples of their faith at all times and in all places, including on the Internet. If they use blogs, social networks, and other Internet technologies, they are encouraged to strengthen others and help them become aware of that which is useful, good, and praiseworthy. When appropriate, members are encouraged to mention the Church and to link to and share approved Church materials. When members use the Internet for purposes other than Church callings, they should understand that the message they give is personal. They should not give the impression that they represent or are sponsored by the Church.”

Trotter had no comment on Archuleta or his experiences as a missionary, except to say that The Church would not confirm that Archuleta would be serving his mission in Chile, and Trotter spoke only of general guidelines given to all missionaries.

As expected, the weekly letters posted do focus primarily on the Church, since Archuleta is not more popular than Jesus. Elder Dayne Joyner, assigned to Mexico, wrote on April 2 that he “recently become very interest[ed] in the history of some of the hymns.” Elder Anthony Kai Buckwalter, assigned to Taiwan, writes about “going to the temple so early in the morning” is something he loves. And Sister Natalie Sargeant, assigned to Chile, writes about General Conference in that the “Spirit was strong, our songs turned out great, we were only like 50 yds from President Monson and the apostles … really, amazing.”

But when arguably the biggest celebrity to ever enter the MTC takes classes and meals with 19-year-olds and 20-year-olds, it is hard not to write home about Archuleta.

Elder Tanner Browning, assigned to Moscow, on April 4, wrote: “For all of my girl cousins back home I can say yeah, that I have briefly talked to him haha.”

“I feel bad for him sometimes because people come up and talk to him alot and one guy asked for his autograph,” Joyner wrote.

Most of those who encountered him said that he was shy and humble, as well as being much shorter than they expected him to be. Some take Advanced Spanish with him, and others jog with him. Sister Hermana Goimarac wrote that Archuleta “wears the tightest missionary pants, haha.”

However, no matter how hard the Church might try, it appears as if the presence of Archuleta has affected the MTC in small ways. Sister Skyler Elizabeth Dunford wrote that the missionaries “started getting all of those talks — “Please leave famous missionaries alone.” “It is not appropriate to ask other missionaries for autographs.”

And one persistent scuttlebutt is that Archuleta got special treatment for being allowed to in the MTC choir early for General Conference. “I said there is a choir of 364 people to Gen Conf,” wrote Elder Ian Derik Sanderson on March 31. “I am not, however, included in them. I haven’t had enough singing experience. The choir now includes 365 people, Can you guess who the last one is? Yep, Elder David Archuleta. My [companion] is super pissed!”

Elder Jordan Olsen, assigned to Nagoya, Japan, also addressed the rumors of special treatment, and seemed unimpressed: “To be honest, I was sorta hoping he wouldn’t be here while I was here … Also, HE got into the MTC choir on thursday. WHAT the what. … Oh, and rumor has it that his [companion] doubles as his bodyguard. What? haha.”

Sister Kelsey Whitaker, assigned to Nauvoo, even seemed a bit irritated. “I was so caught up with the spirit, I didn’t even notice Elder Archuleta,” she wrote. “He’s a pretty big deal amongst the mormons. No one wants to hear what WE’RE doing, they just want to tell us what the latest is with David. Its a little out of control how many people are talking about him.”

But once elders and sisters move past rumors, they seem to all agree that Elder Archuleta is genuine and goes out of his way to be normal. “Just yesterday, he was in the salad line with me and so I talked with him for about 5 minutes,” wrote Elder Ryan Moffet. “He’s pretty awesome, but he said he hates having everyone know who he is. I wasn’t like AWE-stricken when I saw him, but he is way cool. Usually he sits by us at lunch so it’s an interesting experience … He’s a great guy.”

Sister Leavitt calls him her “love, the great Elder Archuleta,” and adds that “he is THEE most humble, shy, wonderful thing ever and so delightful, and it was basically the most blissful minutes of my life [talking to him]. Heavenly Father truly does smile down on His missionaries. ”

Elder Joseph Gibbons, assigned to Bangkok, wrote that Archuleta is “very nice, respectful, and humble. Also very short.”

Starstruck

While there was much excitement going into this Conference weekend there was also a slight sadness having to work both Saturday and Sunday at the MTC and missing opportunities to go watch Conference with loved ones. With all the anticipation to see those Apostles, leaders, and most importantly, the Prophet, I forgot one other celebrity I would be seeing today. In case you have been living under a rock or do not follow exciting events in LDS culture, David Archuleta entered the MTC this last Wednesday. Preparing the line to serve the missionaries some extremely delicious (and not so healthy) biscuits and gravy, I laughed at the excitement of my co-worker as she spoke of how beautiful David’s voice was.

Now, you must have a mental picture of these sweet woman, Gladys. We all love her so much! Gladys stands just over four feet, is about 40-50 years old (so I’m a bad judge of age, deal with it!), and speaks Spanish even when she knows you can’t understand her. Luckily, between her broken English and my past knowledge of basic Spanish I was able to understand her excited ramblings and her plot to keep an eye out for him. Over the course of the shift she faithfully watched the door waiting to get a glimpse when a friend of mine, Elder Henrie, came over to tell me he had just seen him. I look across to Gladys and tell her, “He’s here!” Immediately she responded, “Where?!” After relaying his location to her from Elder Henrie, Gladys, very determinedly, set off to find him. Being the brave little lady she is she walked right up to his table, leaned over the Elder directly across from him, and waving said “Hi, Elder Archuleta!” Oh how I wish I could have seen this exchange! Gladys beamed for the rest of the shift and gave us an excited giggle when she told us, in Spanish, that she had watched him walk out.

In case, like me, you don’t know what he looks like, here he is. Subtract the red carpet, the faux hawk, and add a maroon tie and black suit and you are looking at the very young man I saw today.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy his music, but I had never given much thought to him. Though, I did take my turn during my shift, at my Supervisor’s urging no less, and went to take a peek at him. After asking someone to point him out ( I wasn’t sure what he looked like), I couldn’t find anything particularly remarkable about him. There was no excited waving, goofy smile, happy tears, nor any urge to run and hug this young man. Following this siting, while vacuuming up cereal in the back, I started to think about the people that give me this starstruck sensation, the “celebrities” that make me have the symptoms of a devoted fan. When it comes down to it, these are the people that hold celebrity status in my life. The ones that make me search for their face in a crowd and run at the very site of them. Seeing their smiling faces, knowing I am within reach of their warm embrace, is better to me than seeing any national celebrity. So sorry Elder Archuleta, for this girl you just don’t make the cut.

no he had his companion and several other missionaries were flying to..but they always have thier companion with them. Years ago the families could come and say goodbye, now the missionaries fly out with missionaries. I must admit I waved and he waved back, but you think he was happy before, you should see him now! He looked great!!!! and a huge smile from ear to ear… he is doing the right thing! so proud to be a fan!

SO happy for him!

HEIDI -- it is really bittersweet. I can’t think of any celebrity that has this much impact on me on an emotional level…

Basically, I cried a lot Sunday night! Elder Archuletta sang a rendition of, “The Spirit of God.” The Spirit was amazing! It was like a big huge blanket suddenly was wrapped around my whole body! I can’t describe how strong the Spirit was that night. I know how Lehi felt when he wanted his family to partake of the tree of life. I wish you were all there, just so you could feel the Spirit and know how true the Gospel is!

Week2 at MTC

…And yes, I did meet Elder Archuleta. He’s pretty chill. I guess he’s going to Argentina. I don’t remember with mission. he likes to sit in the vicinity of our district a mealtime so I bump into with some regularity. I actually didn’t realize it was him the first time I talked to him ^-^! How am I of all people supposed to know what he looks like!

People have been spreading that rumor every Wednesday for the past….1000 weeks I’ve been here, so I didn’t believe it at first. So yes, I have seen Elder Archuleta. No, I have not talked to him…I do not aspire to be one of his sister missionary fan club that pesters him. Poor guy. He’s apparently a really amazing person though, so I salute him for deciding to serve a mission.

so toph sounds awesome!! this week i got my travel plans for chile!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we are all freaking out haha i am ready to leave, my mission president emailed me and told us the run down, when we arive eat with him and interviews and stuff then that night sleep with our trainer and get at it! i am so excited! you have no idea!!!!!!!!!! but so we leave the MTC at 10am on the 16th of april, our flight leaves at 155pm from slc we fly to atlanta, a 6 hour flight and land there at 732pm were we have a 3 hour lay over so i will call you then!! i cant wait! so from ATL we fly to santiago and land at 910am in chile!!!!!! i am so excited, there are 8 of us total is the travle group, and yes…. david archuleta is in my group haha so that will be cool!

Last week David Archuleta, runner up on American Idol, reported to the MTC to begin his missionary training. It was exciting to think that Elder Farris and David could possibly meet!

Apparently Elder Farris met David Archuleta THAT VERY DAY!!!! He shook his hand and welcomed him to the MTC. they are in the same zone, so they eat every meal together. They also have church meetings together on Sundays! Elder Farris said he is trying not to act like an obsessed fan, because a lot of the other missionaries are giving David the celebrity treatment instead of treating him normally. Elder Farris is trying to act cool around David, but he said he almost fainted the first time.

Of course, he didn’t tell me (Jacie, his girlfriend) any of this in his Thursday P-day email. He just said to check the mail for his letter, because I’d “really like it.” Very cryptic. I had a feeling it would be about David, especially after seeing David sing at General Conference over the weekend. But then Monday finally rolled around and I got my letter, telling me all of the above information. Naturally, I freaked out!!

I texted his family, and I found out they knew the whole weekend! Elder Farris had emailed them about it on Thursday, but made them all promise not to tell me. They did a very good job! He planned for me to freak out and surprise me with a letter. Well, it worked.

Examples of Faith. Elder David Archuleta.

I wrote this post for my personal blog, but I felt it appropriate to publish here as well…

I am not a big teeny bopper music fan. Bieber throws me into involuntary convulsions and any of the Disney babies -- don’t get me started. But, to every rule, there is always an exception, and gradually David Archuleta has become that exception for me.

My teenage daughter has always liked his music, in fact for her 12th birthday she asked for his album ‘The Other Side of Down’. I listened to it with her, and even (secretly) ripped a copy of it to my own mp3 player to listen to -- in the car -- when nobody was listening with me. But the more I learned about this amazing young man, the more I liked him.

He has always stuck to his values.

He believes strongly in his faith.

He holds very high standards.

And most recently -- he’s been willing to give up his entire music career for two years to serve a mission for his church in a foreign country, likely void of the luxury comforts that he’s come accustomed to with his success.

He’s cut his hair. He’s traded in the schedule of the road for a 6 AM to 10 PM proselytizing schedule (which might actually be easier…). He’s traded in fame and adoring fans for door to door possible humiliation and being openly mocked by those who do not believe nor understand his faith (side note, I’ve had missionaries over to our home for dinner who have shared experiences such as having beverages hurled at them from passing cars while riding their bikes down the street.) And, he’s using his own money to do so.

This is Elder David Archuleta, who entered the Missionary Training Center this week just in time to sing in the choir during conference. Elder David Archuleta, the world famous teeny bopper rock star who is just one among many missionaries sharing the same gospel message, and is happily doing so.

If there was going to be someone that my daughter is going to crank up his music, dance around and be crazy, and swoon every time he comes on the radio or television etc…well, then I’m okay with it being this young man. (for the record, there is no swooning, not yet -- none that I know of…or that she’d admit to, come to think of it -- her friends read this blog, I’m not sure I should be posting that about her…oh well, to late now. I don’t have any white-out, after all.)

Anyway, my point is, he’s a great young man and I admire his faith and ability to follow and live it. I only hope that I too am able to live my faith as boldly as he has, and not be ashamed to do so. He’s made this very personal decision in a very public way, as his career dictates. I will never have to make such a personal choice so publicly, but I do hope that I can follow his example of living my faith in such a way that nobody doubts my beliefs.

Monday, April 16, 2012, Third Week…

This week has been crazy! Half of my zone is leaving either today, tomorrow or on wednesday. Things are going to be so different this coming week. There are going to be 20 elders joining Zone 45 this week. Jacob Lake apparently isn’t one of them. There are two portuguese zones here at the MTC and Jacob Lake will be joining the other one.

I’ve seen a lot of good friends here at the MTC, Elder Bailey, Elder McCombs, Elder Yost, and Elder Searle. It’s great to see that they’re here to serve a mission. Yesterday, for the Sunday Devotional Elder M. Russell Ballard came and spoke to us. It was so neat to see him, and I had a great seat that was very close. He taught about how important “Preach My Gospel” is in this great work, and if we study it we will have a greater power to teach. He also said that every word in that book was inspired by God and had been worked on by every member of the quorum of the twelve. First Letter from the MTC

Today is my last full day in the US for the next two years. I am surprisingly not very nervous about heading to Brasil, I am just excited to be immersed in the culture and Portuguese.

I saw Elder Archuleta this morning, when me and the companions I am on splits with got locked out of our room and had to go to the floor above us to get the master key. As we were standing around in our towels, he walked by us and into his room right next to us. I talked a little bit to him and one of his roomates and wished him good luck in the Chile, Rancagua mission because he’s leaving today. Aside from seeing him a couple times today last night, we had the most amazing fireside I had ever been to. Before it started all of us missionaries sang hymns and then we heard a musical number from the daughters of the 2nd counselor in MTC presidency, then we heard from our MTC president Elder Brown who spoke about the importance of being a good companion that is lead by the spirit. After his talk, Elder Archuleta sang the Spirit of God and it was amazing how he brought the spirit into the gym we were in. The final speaker was M Russell Ballard and he also spoke on the importance of teaching by the spirit and believing the doctrine with all our heart. I felt like he was looking directly at me a lot of his talk which was pretty cool. To cap it all off, all of us missionaries formed an Mtc choir and softly sang called to serve as if we were the stripling warriors coming over a hill so by the end we were standing up and singing at the top of our lungs. It was an amazing spiritual and uplifting fireside. The MTC is a remarkable place and I can’t wait to experience the one in Brasil.

Just have to say, we had the most wonderful day at the Provo Missionary Training Center! So amazing! Finished it off sitting at the feet of M. Russell Ballard, an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, Quorem of the Twelve. Wonderful sacrament meeting earlier; attended a Branch with all the missionaries preparing to serve in the Phillipines. I sang the hymns in tagalog with everyone. Beautiful Relief Society with all the sister missionaries this morning. Janis Lindley spoke powerfully about teaching everyone about Jesus Christ. So motivating! “Our very own” Elder David Archiletta sang “The Spirit of God Like a Fire is Burning”. He is ready to go serve the Lord!
All of the missionaries are amazing & such an inspiration to me! 56,000 can’t be wrong! How blessed we are! Love to all!

Leaving Tomorrow

Anyways, this week has been pretty great. The highlight was definitely last Sunday. For our fireside Elder M. Russell Ballard came to speak to us. It was the most wonderful suprise ever and on top of that he had Elder Archuleta sing. At first I was excited just to get to hear him but he ended up singing “The Spirit of God” and I can not even describe to you how strong the Spirit was especially when he sang the second verse in Spanish. We were told that he is going to be serving in Chile and that he would leave the next day for the MTC down there. Apparently Elder Ballard and him are quite close as he served as a sort of mentor/counselor for him.

Guess what??! Sunday for a fireside we had Elder M. Russell Ballard speak to us and give us the best kind of encouragement we needed as a final Sunday spiritual boom! We also had Elder David Archuleta sing The Spirit of God, oh and for all of these Archuleta fans that may be reading this email, I spoke with him and see him just about every day, he usually sits in one spot which is where my district sits. haha. I have spent more time with a celebrity in the MTC than I have ever done in my whole life. Crazy huh? Archuleta is someone we all can look up to. He is one of the most famous people in America, richer than rich, and he is out here serving the Lord. I had respect for him already for doing that, but after hearing him sing that song and watch him begin to cry because of how that song made him feel, he is an awesome person. Very awesome.

Last Sunday was another great one. We sat down at the fireside and in walks Elder Ballard. Sister Tivalu started having a nervous breakdown on the spot and kept elbowing me and grinning during the opening song. AND THEN…David Archuleta sang The Spirit of God. In English and Spanish. Like a pro. Oh, wait…that’s what he is. For good reason. He got kind of emotional at the end but finished it like a trooper. Sorry to be cliche, but you could have heard a pin drop. Elder Ballard stood up immediately after and said: “Elder Archuleta…you’re a hard act to follow…” Elder Ballard followed with an excellent talk about the importance of missionary work and having confidence in what we’re doing. Man. Everything here is excellent. As the Filipinos would say, mabuti!

Elder David Archuleta sang! I was hoping he would sing before he left. He sang the Spirit of God and it was so beautiful! He sang a verse in Spanish (he is going to the Chile Renagua Mission) and he totally teared up at the end of that verse, and even more so at the end of the song, but it was so beautiful and I’m grateful he shared his talents with us while he was here. He left yesterday (Monday) for his mission to Chile. For the closing song of the devotional we all sang a really neat version of Called to Serve. Oh boy was that powerful!

6TH P-day Letter Day

News of the week: David Archuleta came to the MTC! I sit right by the doors to the cafeteria and he walked in and I was like, “hey, that’s Elder Archuleta.” I was the first one to see him. He’s pretty short. Anyways, I feel really bad for him. I’m sure he just wants everyone to treat him like a normal missionary, but there were still a BUNCH of people who had to go introduce themselves to him. He sat at the table behind my district. Literally, everyone in the cafeteria stood up and started whispering and pointing. It’s too bad that even at the MTC of all places, people can’t just be themselves. I just hope the hype of him being here whithers down a bit because it would be really hard to focus on the work if I were him and everyone kept talking and pointing at me and trying to talk to me. I’m sure he’s nervous just like every other new missionary, but add his fame on top of all that and he is probably extremely overwhelmed. Other than that, Wednesday was pretty normal. Japanese has its ups and downs and it seems to be coming along very well. We get the new Japanese missionaries from Japan on Monday and we are all extremely excited!! That is WAY better news than David Archuleta coming here! Our excitement for their arrival is incomprehensible! I already love them so much!

“3rd day in the MTC”

My days in the MTC are growing more and more intense. The Russian language absolutely humbles me and makes me realize that the Lord is the only way that I can accomplish such a daunting feat. It was the third day of Russian language training, and we were already expected to teach a Russian investigator here at the MTC, completely in Russian! Everything is incredibly fast-paced here and there’s no stopping the hyperspeed that has been induced on our perceptions of time and space continums.

Anyways… David.. excuse me.. Elder Archuletta entered the MTC the same day as me. I’ve seen him a couple of times, just wandering around, looking for open mics.. naw, I’m kidding, he’s most likely more humble than me, and that’s saying a lot!

He’s shorter than me in case your wondering, and he his very tiny. I don’t know what I was expecting, but he really is a petite Elder. People keep saying I look like him (obviously that’s borderline blindness) And people are just funny in general of what they think. I guess I’ll have to try to get a picture with him so ya’ll can get an idea of the wrongness of some people’s accusations

But currently, I’m trying not to be angry with Elder Archuletta. By the time you will all read this, you might know why. And this is a completely true story by the way.. For General Conference Saturday afternoon session, the Provo Missionary Training Center gathered a choir together to sing at conference. They had already been practicing for 9 days before I entered the MTC, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to try my best to get in the choir anyways. I really did try to get in, trust me. I went directly to the “head honcho” a.k.a the President presiding over the MTC. And I asked him if there was ANY possiblity that I could get into the choir. His response was that all the seats were filled and that I couldn’t join. But regardless of my persistencies, the NEXT DAY, I found out that they asked Elder Archuletta to sing in the choir. It kind of frustrated me at first, but then it hit me! A brilliant plan was graciously bestowed to my knowledge!

I had often seen Elder Archuletta around the banana bins, collecting his favorite foods before he would sit down and eat his meal. I had noticed his schedule was closely in sync with mine, and without stalking him, I kinda knew where he was going to be at certain times. It was then that I realized that I could utilize those people’s blind perspectives, and unsctructred opinions to my advantage!

My plan was to station myself Saturday morning by the banana bins at the alotted time of Elder Archuletta’s arrival. It is there that I would have 3 cups of orange juice and a plate of ketchup-covered hash browns ready on my tray. On my companion’s que, I would hurriedly turn from my position as Elder Archuletta was positioned behind me, crashing my tray into him, and thus spilling/splashing everything all over his attire. His initial shock would be my winning card. I would apologize for my clumsiness, grab some nearby napkins and try to help him clean off some of the excess mess, but assuming he would detest after the first couple of seconds, I would use that moment as a red herring, in which I would insist on helping him clean off with napkins, brushing off the top right-hand side of his suit, quickly swiping his name tag off his jacket undetected, where I would smoothly place it secretly in my pocket.

After his shock would wear off, he would realize he would have to go back to his room and change, but by then I would have already slipped Elder Archuletta’s name tag on my jacket, and spiked my hair slightly to resemble Elder Archuletta’s, and would already be boarding the bus to General Conference with the missionary choir under the identity of Elder Archuletta.
The plan was perfect, and people are gullible. But I ultimately realized that that’s not what a good missionary would do

A Thought From David Archuleta Mormon Missionary

David Archuleta is a famous Mormon singer who has decided to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Before he left to serve as a Mormon missionary, he filmed a short video message for those wondering about what he will be doing while he serves a Mormon mission. [1] Missionaries are called by a modern prophet of God (Thomas S. Monson) to “invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end” (Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Missionary Service, 1). In other words, David has temporarily put his career on hold to preach the gospel to people in South America. David, like all other Mormon missionaries, had no choice as to where he was sent to serve. The Lord decides and reveals that information to His prophet and apostles.

I’m going to be trying my best to focus on the people over there and more one-on-one experience,” he said. “It’s going to be a big sacrifice, but I’m doing this to be able to have more of that one-on-one time with my Heavenly Father — with God. I hope that you guys will respect that it’s time for me to work on my relationship with him and the time that I need to give him. [5]

In another video message prior to leaving on his mission, David ensured his fans that this was not goodbye:

David was an American Idol contestant during the time that I was serving a Mormon mission. As a missionary, there are rules that most of the world doesn’t comprehend, such as only two phone calls home a year, emails to family only once a week, and no entertainment such as television, newspapers, or online media. These rules are to help missionaries focus on their work and not get easily distracted from serving others and preaching the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. On my mission, I didn’t use Facebook and didn’t know who David Archuleta was until I returned home from my Mormon mission. During the fall of 2008, I was walking around in a corn maze (depicted as a portrait of David Archuleta) when I asked someone else who he was. Of course they stared at me and said, “You don’t know who David Archuleta is?” I had been out of the country for a couple of years. Fortunately, I was quickly brought up to speed and informed that David Archuleta is a Mormon entertainer who had almost won American Idol. Shortly afterwards, I was also able to hear him singing at a local Christmas concert celebrating the birth of Christ. I know that the Lord Jesus Christ is important to him, since he’ll be wearing a nametag for two years that says “Elder Archuleta” next to the full name of Christ’s true church.

In David’s short video message, he said, “It’ll be interesting—being gone for 2 years,” and wondered about the type of people he will meet. [1] On my mission, I spoke with people from different nations, cultures, and religions. I spoke with atheists, Catholics, Jehovah Witnesses, and Muslims. I lived in the city and in small towns filled with families, young single adults, college students, and immigrants. I volunteered teaching English classes, genealogy, and performing other types of community service for people of all ages. I also really enjoyed being invited into homes to teach entire families. The message of the gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone, and it was a blessing to share my testimony with many of God’s children.

Mormon singer David Archuleta remarked that his family and friends “will grow on their own while I’m gone, away from them, not in touch with them”. [1]Even though he is able to email his parents every week, it is hard to reflect everything accurately through email, and he may come home to changes in his family and career. Fortunately, he is excited to have this experience independent of his family. He stated he would “never normally separate himself from what he’s comfortable with,” and being a missionary could put him out of his comfort zone. Some missionaries have a hard time learning a new language, adjusting to another culture, doing their own cooking/laundry, or even starting conversations with perfect strangers. Fortunately, David Archuleta, as a new Mormon missionary, has faith that he will grow from his challenges. He will have the opportunity to broaden his perspective and trust in God. As a young teenager, he overcame vocal cord paralysis and said:

Instead of acting like everything in life is so hard and confusing, look at it this way: the only way you can go from here is up… It’s our decisions and how we handle things, even when they get rough. If we keep holding on, looking at things positively and working hard, we can improve our lives, help ourselves, and even help the greater good. [3]

David Archuleta put a hold on live concerts, recording music, and more to serve his mission. He wondered about his fans, and I imagine was concerned to stop developing professionally for awhile. Fortunately, he prepared for his absence from the musical industry by pre-recording videos and a new CD for his fans. One of his fans remarked—

I am so happy that he carefully planned out his career while he was gone. It was a great gift and helps to keep him in the attention of the media while he is doing some serious good. I have no doubt that we can expect amazing music from it. It may even be even more passionate since he knew that he would be disconnected away from his fans for as long. I personally cannot wait to see what it will have and what his songs will be like off it. I think we can all agree that it will hold a lot of love that he has for his fan base. In a way, it was his going away gift to his fans and thus I am sure he treats it more special than his normal releases. [4]

At the end of his video, David said, “I can’t wait to bring back the person I’ve become while I have that time away”. [1] From my personal experience, I know that my mission changed my life and helped open my perspective to those around me. I became a happier person and more Christ-like because of my service. I learned more about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and witnessed the blessings it brought to those who were baptized members of the LDS Church. It brings me great peace and happiness to know that God loves and guides us today through living prophets and revelation.

talked to @DavidArchie’s mom and grandpa after church today and told them how much we love his new album(s) and how thankful we all are for his hard work and doing this for us…asked her how he was doing and she said “just so wonderful and happy”…should have gone to the missionaries house after the meeting to visit more with them…dang, buy I had to teach my 11 year old class:(

Looks like this computer is ***not working***, so no photos this week. Too bad, because I had some really good ones. Elder David Archuleta In Chile

Carissa, you´ll like this; this week I got to spend a little bit of time with Elder David Archuleta. He´s not in our mission, but he and some other elders in his mission (Rancagua) were in Santiago to see a doctor for an elder that needed medical work done at the same time as when my companion needed to see a doctor here (he´s fine now by the way). We got to chat with Elder Archuleta and other elders outside the main offices for a little. It was sweet just having a normal conversation with him and other people…nothing at all about him being famous or even directed at him at all. Also, Sammy, the first thing I asked him was if he knew you haha and that was funny. Ohh and what made me even more excited about talking with him and some of the other elders in the Rancagua mission was that they will most likely come to Santiago when Elder Bednar comes here to visit our mission (haven’t told you guys that yet). And so what that means is I’ll get to see Brett Baker! But the other elders weren’t for sure on if their whole mission was coming to Santiago then… so we´ll see.

Well th egood news is that Gladys has been confirmed to attend the October concert in Chile where Elder Archuleta is expected to sing some pop songs

“I’m going to stay at the top till I’m done with my work”

Forgive me if I say the same things a lot when I email, my memory isn’t so good. One that I think I forgot to mention was this elder I saw while walking the temple grounds I thought I recognized from somewhere. I started talking to him and it turns out he is the star of that Youtube video with the Mormon kid who just got his wisdom teeth out and was rambling about the church while on the surgery drugs. Also a little while before I got here my teachers taught someone you might know, an Elder David Archuleta heading to Chile, the teacher told us he was really humble and really kind and spoke really highly of him.

Gladys must be spazzing enroute to Chile as the concert in Chile is tomorrow, Saturday.

There is hope that this time around, pictures and video taping may be permitted as this sounding more and more like a less restrictive event. No DONT’S list issued this time… hmmmm

A Great Day

Yesterday I saw Elder Archuleta, He singing for 2 hours and was wonderful. I was only 5 meters from him. He looked so happy, I felt that for a moment he forgot that he is a missionary and was only able to feel the music. Being able to hear his testimony was powerful, he has a strong testimony of the gospel and said it was difficult for him to make the decision to serve a mission, but that certainly doesn’t regret having listened to the promptings of the spirit and is very happy serving and preaching the gospel in a country so “Bacán”.

Elder David Bednar visited Chile on Friday, and the four missions in the area (Santiago north, east, west, and our mission Rancagua) were invited to hear him speak. “Elder Archie” sang in the beginning. The Elders from the other missions were freaking out saying “Elder Archie’s here!” when we just rolled our eyes because he sings at just about all of our mission events. His talk was great. It didn’t have a specific topic, but he hit some very good points, and animated us to work harder and be more about Christ. The Spirit was very strong. I was glad to listen in English. Although I understand in Spanish, I still have to translate in my head for a 100th of a second longer, which makes it difficult to get the meaning as well as the words. The translator had fun translating some of the funny things Bednar said. One time during the talk, Bednar asked the translator how to say “freak out” in Spanish. The translator came up with the word “enterrorarse” which means “to terror yourself”.

I was able to see Hermana Carter and Hermana Iroz from the MTC! And wouldn’t you know it, we had a special musical number in the beginning from Elder Archuleta! He sang “I’m trying to be like Jesus” in Spanish. And of course, it was gorgeous. I was able to saludar him after the devotional and thank him for his musical number, but sorry, no pictures. That wouldn’t have been profesional.

… then friday was the great day of the week and one of the most memorable ones of the whole mission. we had to be in republica to listen to….wait for it…..elder david a bednar of the quorum of the 12. it was just an awesome devtional overall and i learned so much. i recorded it with a voice recorder and i wanted to send it to you all to listen to but the files are too big to go through. so we´ll just have to listen to it together when i get back from the mission….which by the way is now only 4 months away. but the devotional started out with a special musical number by someone pretty famous. i got to meet him as elder archuleta but most of you will know him as david archuleta. he is serving in the chile rancagua mission and they came with us to the devtional so he sang. he sang im trying to be like jesus but in spanish and it was really good. i thought he started out a little shaky but i mean who wouldnt having to sing in front of 350 missionaries…

Sunday was also an awesome day, like usual. We had the normal talks and movie type stuff going on but in what talk we watched it was a talk at the MTC on April 15th, 2012 and David Archuleta sang at the devotional. He sang the Spirt of God, Part of it was in Spanish as well. Man it hit me pretty dang hard, it was awesome. He sang with so much power I just cant ever forget it. Seriously I cried.

Cos I distinctly remember the 1st time he talked about that… about starting from scratch…

I’ve worked very hard for the last 4 years or so. To be able to come to where I am today… to be able to have the opportunities given — to record, to do shows, to provide for the fans — and it is also been my way of living, I mean it’s been my job, too.

So to have to decide and leave all that is very hard. But I think this is something when you trust God. I dunno what’s gonna happen in 2 years. I dunno if I’m gonna have to start from scratch again. But I trust God. I have trusted Him so far and He has never let me down. I don’t want to let Him down cos this decision is for Him. So I trust that He knows my intention and He will provide a way when I get back, like He always has.

He was just a few feet away from me with less than 20 people in the room. I am sure that meant a lot to him, reading Glady’s message.

“I was at the Christmas Devotional today, my best friends are in the chorus so i went early at the temple square, We were in the church singing and playing piano, then Seba said “oh Nina you’re a fan of Archuleta, you know all his songs” and I was like “hey … I only know one of his songs on piano”, so I started play the song on piano and guess what … yes, elder Archuleta came, laughed and said “hey … that’s my song.” We were amazed and I obviously got very shy, He talked to us for a while and then we could be in his essay before of the devotional. Aside from that, the other musical news of the week was that on Saturday, we went to the temple with Eduardo to see the choirs, and much to our surprise, the show was featuring special musical guest, Elder David Archuleta. So that was pretty stinkin cool. He´s a really good singer. He sang ´´The Prayer´´(more popularly done by Celine Dion and Josh Groban) with this one girl, and my heart melted…… sooooo dreamy. He’s no Josh Groban, but he did a really good job, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, Eduardo had a really really good time.

Then we heard this rumor going around that since Elder David Archuleta is serving in Rancagua Chile right now, he was going to sing in one of the concerts. And sure enough.. On saturday he got up and sang! It was awesome!! He has one amazing voice! And it was great to hear a song in English haha. He sang a duet with this other girl and that was great. They sang a Portugese/English song.. Then Elder Archuleta sang two or three more songs in Spanish. Did you guys know his family is from Puerto Rico and he knew Spanish before mission? I didnt know that haha. But its true. So after the concert we left and didnt get home til 11:30.. I was beat tired and went right to sleep!

Then Sunday i completed 7 months in the mission! I cant believe that at all! So we had church and that wasnt anything out of the ordinary.. But we had our baptisms later that day and that was just amazing!! I love baptisms! Then right after the baptism, we went with one of the ladies that were baptized and her family to the Christmas Concert again. That was really good again. But Elder Archuleta didnt sing this time..

Also, this past week we saw David Archuleta! haha I don’t know if you rmember him from American Idol. Elder Archuleta!

Last Sunday i went to see Elder Archuleta… again, i’m so happy to know how great he is there. It’s obvious that people form his church love him so much, it does surprised me how great he get on with all the people and how sociable he is. He talks with everybody and he’s always laughing. Everytime that I can see him it make feel happy to know he’s ok. The truth is that I wish he could never leave Chile because I really love him and I get used to it to be with him. He’s is such a great person and he loves what he’s doing. Teaching others people the gospel and he’s happy doing that! I’m so happy to see him!

First, I lost my wallet on Thursday. It only had my driver´s license, personal debit card, mission debit card, and money in it. So I´m a little broke right now until we get more funds on April 1st. For right now, I´m borrowing from my companion. Also, about an hour ago, I asked Elder Porkchop (Spanish for Elder (ar)Chuleta, once again) if he we were going to practice today. He looked at me confused, and asked ¨Why? Did they not tell you…?¨ and then he explained that some other missionary, several hours south of here, insisted on taking care of the Easter Program, so THEY GAVE IT TO HIM! 2 days ago, without telling me! And I didn´t hear anything until I asked Archie about it today. Needless to say, I´m not too happy about that since we’ve already been practicing. Apparently the other elder has taken care of all the piano playing in the mission so far, and I guess he plans on continuing to do so. As of right now, I am pretty sure I will be in this mission and that other elder will be in Santiago South once they split the mission. It´s guaranteed that porkchop will be in this mission, he´s never been and never will go up to the Santiago Areas. They keep him in the Rancagua area so he doesn´t have to travel too far to do performances here. Meanwhile, I´m going to have a little chat with the person in charge of the Easter program and change their mind back to having me play. Don´t Hassle the Hoff.

ERMAHGERSH I PERFORMED WITH PORKCHOP YESTERDAY
April 1, 2013:

According to the title, yep it´s true, I played in the devotional yesterday. I got things figured out. I played, and the other missionary is at home right now. Like home home, *with his parents* home. Right. So yeah, Tuesday was Zone Conference and the couple in charge of the Devotional was
in the room. I went up and asked ¨Hey, what´s the deal with Elder —--?¨ and they responded ¨Yeah, like isn´t it so sad he´s going home tomorrow?¨

So yeah, I ended up playing the devotional, but it was awkward. I wanted to play, but I´d rather that it worked out in a way that wasn´t because he freaking was going home. At that same zone conference, about halfway through they brought in a (Older) new sister fresh off the plane in Santiago. Anyways, they sat her down in front of me, where one of her trainers were sitting (she´s in a trio, hence 2 trainers). So she turns around to me, and like asks ¨Is there an Elder Hoff in this mission? Do you know where he is?¨ I start laughing, and she gets a confused look on her face, so I look down and realize my name tag somehow reversed itself on my suitcoat. I then say, ¨Why do you want him? The famous one is Elder Archuleta!¨ I said this right as I nudged him, he was sitting right next to me, occupied in a conversation with someone else. He looked over because he heard his name and I just brushed it off as ¨Oh, I was just explaining that you´re her district leader¨ (which is true).

He said ¨Oh, ok nice to meet you!¨ and went back to his conversation. Nice save, don´cha think?

The Aftermath of April Fool’s
April 8, 2013:

So yep, I did perform with Archuleta last Sunday on Easter day. He sang (the Spanish versions of) “His Hands” (Sus Manos) and “This is the Christ” (El Cristo Es). I also played while the choir and congregation sang. Annnnnd I also played my own solo piece, a version of “I Stand All Amazed”.

And here it is! Another feature on David this coming Sunday!

You’ll get a look at how acclaimed singer-turned-Mormon missionary David Archuleta still manages to release new music while serving a mission in Chile. And fans don’t have to worry — he’s not breaking any mission rules!

Hola Everyone

Well this week was the complete opposite of last week. We really had a rough time finding and teaching our investigators this week. And it was the last week of the change but Elder Salmon and I are staying together for another 6 weeks here in San Francisco de Mostazal. We are going to treat this change like a whitewash because we haven’t been able to find most of our investigators for like a week and a half, so we are going to start over and really focus on getting the members to help us. Elder Archuleta is really quiet and humble (for those of you who want to know) and really nice. He is my 2nd step cousin in the mission. His step dad and my step dad are brothers…so yeah a really weird relationship. When I told him that, he was so confused because he thought I was talking about real life. Kinda funny I guess. He is now a Zone Leader in a different zone so who knows if I’ll see him again. Well that is about all that happened this week. Know that I love and miss you and that you are continually in my prayers. Hope you have a great week!

Archuleta… he’s pretty reserved. Like, really reserved. He’s a Zone Leader in Baquedano right now I think… He is training an Elder, that is Latino. I think they only give him Latino comps so they don’t go all star struck on him, ask him to sign stuff, etc. He’s a cool guy, but I haven’t really talked to him all that much. He’s pretty intensely quiet.

Today for p-day I went with my zone to a really cool lake, Lake Rapel. We played futbol, ate food, and hung out. They are all so awesome! It kinda helped me get my head up and realize that I can have fun on my mission!

Hola familia!

Hey you splendid people! Alright buckle up for a classic in this email, but we`ll get to that in a sec. Dad, nice work on the YM Pres.! Seriously, that will be so fun and I think you are right about the testimonies of the YM. If they can grow in their testimonies, you will have done what was right and they will be grateful. My scripture this week comes from Ether 3:5. I know it`s part of what I sent last week, but you`ll see from the story that it had a different meaning for me. Elder Archuleta is in Rancagua, but he`s coming to sing at Zone Conf. so maybe I`ll get a pic or something. I am a little bummed about my MTC district, but really, it`s part of the mission and I`ve accepted it. I seem to have that calling in life to be a little bit alone. I have a ton of support, but a lot of times, I feel like the Lord has me in a spot that nobody else understands except him. I still have friend and support, but I feel a lot of times like it`s me and the Lord, which is fine. He is my strength and my support. Sometimes that support comes through other people, the scriptures, prayer, or other things and I am grateful for that. I can`t really explain that part of what I feel in an email, so don`t worry. I`m fine and happy and super excited to keep working hard.
