Reposting what RALPH’s comment in the previous thread —

After taking a walk outside in the cool air of the evening, the cry of David’s voice is still haunts me. A masterclass of perfectly centered vocals flavored with such strong, yet, sensitive emotions. In the video David sits and from the very first amazing delivery I’m hooked. Then the images and direction of Jed Wells…now I’m crying, too! “Look what you made me do!”

American Idol‘s David Archuleta may be away on a mission trip, but that hasn’t stopped him from releasing music to his fans. On August 7, he dropped his highly anticipated BEGIN album, and now he has released the official music video for his cover of “Everybody Hurts” by REM. (OMG)

We get to see clips of him in the studio recording intermingled with several stories: A man deals with his daughter getting married, a soldier longs for home, and more! (TEARS.)

I’m in tears watching David’s new music video the first time, and in tears again watching it on repeat. Gosh, david, you hit me big time on this video. I’m not really “into” on this song, don’t get me wrong, I do love “Everybody Hurts” but not the same as how I appreciate “DGU”, “BROKEN”, “SOWK”, “BOTW” & “BSMS”. But when I saw Everybody Hurts’ music video, I literary stopped breathing for 4 minutes & 53 seconds and can’t pull back my tears from falling (Watched it the 1st time during lunch break today and good thing most of my officemates were in the canteen having their lunch, so nobody sees me crying. LOL).

My favorite part in the video is the father-daughter scene. It reminds me of my dad, he was tearing while he leads me to the altar on my wedding day and took him a while before he gave my hand to my hubby. O David, I really love your video. Hope the BEGIN. CD I ordered for my mom and dad will arrive soon so that they will hear David’s moving and powerful voice on his most inspirational album ever. And I can’t wait what my dad will say/comment when he hears “DGU” --> one of his all time favorite song.

This video was beautifully made. The message is so real and touches the heart. It’s about hope, faith and holding on. Something we can relate to. Every time David appeared in the video, I love it, you can see that he gave all his emotions as he sang the song, which we the viewers felt it. Plus the clips they add, I like it, showing different kind of relationships and situations. Ahhh, so heartmelting and touching. David’s team did a great job. I love it so, sooooo much.
I think this will be my new favorite song in the album, BEGIN. 😉

David Archuleta Makes His Last Studio Session in ‘Everybody Hurts’ Music Video

Filmed a day before his two-year LDS mission trip, the Jed Wells-directed clip sees Archuleta singing in a studio with an orchestra that features producer Kurt Bestor.

David Archuleta sings his heart out in his new music video for “Everybody Hurts”. Covering R.E.M.’s 1992 hit song, the “American Idol” alum can be seen singing in a recording studio along with an orchestra, which includes producer Kurt Bestor. The studio scene was apparently taken the day before the crooner left for his LDS mission.

Also featured in the Jed Wells-directed clip is a touching scene of a father who looks miserable since his only daughter is about to get married and leave him. A female soldier who misses her young son at the battlefield and a young couple who must be separated since one of them has to move out of town are additionally seen in it.

Upon releasing his video on his official YouTube channel, Archuleta posted a note for his fans, making sure that he will make more music after he comes back from his two-year mission. “I hope you know that I never wanted to leave you guys without music, and will continue when I get back,” so he stated.

“Everybody Hurts” is included in the 21-year-old singer’s latest album “BEGIN.” which has been released in the U.S. since August 7.

David Archuleta covers REM song “Everybody Hurts”

David Archuleta has released the music video for his version of “Everybody Hurts.” The song comes from his fifth studio album BEGIN.

“Everybody Hurts” was originally released as a 1993 single from American rock band R.E.M. In the liner notes of the band’s album In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988–2003, the R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck wrote that “the reason the lyrics are so atypically straightforward is because it was aimed at teenagers.”

According to the description of the Youtube video, David performed the R.E.M. classic with an orchestra which includes producer Kurt Bestor. The shots of David were recorded in a studio the day before he left on his mission.

I have to wonder what kind of pain AND inspiration David Archuleta was feeling when he chose to record this song

Album Review -- David Archuleta’s Begin

On August 7, 2012 David Archuleta released his new album, Begin. First thoughts concerning the release are very good. The album consists of one original song written by David, ‘Broken’ and the other tracks are cover songs. However, David says all of the selections were made by him because of the special meaning and emotion he felt to each. Archuleta recorded these songs for his fans before leaving on a two-year Mormon missionary, which is a requirement for males in the religion.
On Begin the listener will hear song after song that is inspirational and the last song being a hymn, ‘Be Still, My Soul. Making a cover album has a 50/50 chance of being successful and certainly many artists in the past have failed to pull it off. However, David’s vocals on these songs are exceptional and filled with emotion, which is probably something fans are going to love. In the past, David’s vocals have always been near perfect, but emotionally connecting to the songs was something that was pointed out by the judges during his time on American Idol.

All of the song have a soft tempo and and yet give a feeling of being very modern and pop-like. The album had 10 tracks ranging from Bridge Over Troubled Water, Beautiful, True Colors, Everybody Hurts, and Angel. His voice on each song is soulful and has the potential to touch the listener because of the emotion he puts into each. Begin could prove in time to be the best album the artist has recorded to date. One aspect about David that makes him a bit different than other artists is he is just himself and making decisions that are right for him.

David has shown integrity by going on the two-year required missionary work while placing his career aside, this is another risk for any artist to take. However, with his new album and honesty with his fans, it could prove to jump start a bigger career upon his return. The new album Begin has his fans so far loving it. Overall, it is a solid album from David that shows a more emotional and spiritual side than anyone has yet to see from this young artist.

    FROM CBS Tampa

COVERED: David Archuleta Does R.E.M.’s ‘Everybody Hurts’

Before David Archuleta headed out on his two-year mission with The Church of Latter Day Saints, he recorded a cover of REM’s “Everybody Hurts,” complete with an orchestra.

“I hope you know that I never wanted to leave you guys without music, and will continue when I get back,” Archuleta said on his website about the cover, which appears on his recently released album, BEGIN.

The video, which features the American Idol runner-up recording in the studio, focuses on those going on their own missions from a young couple separating for college to an armed servicewoman serving in the Middle East to a father whose daughter is getting married.

The original by REM off of their 1992 album, Automatic For the People, was also meant to be optimistic and written for those contemplating suicide, telling those struggling to never give up.

Though Michael Stipe has always been evasive about the song’s meaning and known to change the lyrics of his songs on a regular basis, in 2001 the Nevada Assembly praised the band for “encouraging the prevention of teen suicides,” specifically mentioning “Everybody Hurts.”

Tuned In: David Archuleta’s ‘Begin’ & Charlie Mars’ ‘Blackberry Light’
By CHUCK CAMPBELL / Scripps Howard News Service
    Aug 27, 2012

    “BEGIN,” David Archuleta (Highway)

Just before he went on a two-year mission, Mormon singer David Archuleta knocked out his new “Begin” — a collection of songs that are spiritual in nature, though not generally religious.

It’s a nice gesture, though it’s still a cover album. And, at 21, Archuleta isn’t quite the veteran at life who can muster the emotional depth dictated by some of these songs.

But the “American Idol” runner-up from 2008 makes a noble go of it. “Begin” is tasteful, dignified and understated, and Archuleta pulls off some surprises with his silky, sweet vocals.

He casts an aural glow of sincerity on Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” a graciously not-overdone version that resonates when he sings, “You are beautiful, no matter what they say.” He also delivers a deft take on Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” a smart, mid-tempo song choice that steers “Begin” away from a ballad badlands of monotony.

By contrast, the polished veneer gets in the way of his take on R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” (which works best in the softer, simpler parts), and Archuleta and guest vocalist Libby Linton are in over their heads trying to tackle the Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush classic “Don’t Give Up.”

However, Archuleta compensates for his lack of soul with a beautiful voice and a lot of heart.

    Rating (five possible): 3-1/2

Mixed review of BEGIN. album from INQUIRER.NET

    Bursts of inspiration
    By Rito P. Asilo

Listening to David Archuleta’s fifth album, “Begin,” his followup to the OPM-fueled “Forevermore,” is an uneven experience. True, it’s hard to find fault with the “American Idol” alumnus’ voice, which only gets better with age and experience. But, singing isn’t just about hitting the notes correctly—it behooves every performer to “relay” the message of his song well.

Take “True Colors.” The voice of Cyndi Lauper, who first sang the No. 1 hit tune in 1986, is nowhere as strong as Archuleta’s, but the songstress’ version manages to go beyond scratching the surface of its pretty lyrics.

To be sure, David’s revival isn’t bad—but, while it’s seamlessly and sincerely rendered, it lacks the soul that Lauper’s original has in heaps! This becomes even more obvious in Archuleta’s perfunctory cover of Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

The young singer is at his most powerful when the complex portions of a song take him out of his comfort zone, as is apparent in his impeccable remakes of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” and REM’s provocative “Everybody Hurts,” in which his malleable pipes twist and stretch to accommodate the tricky notes that make them tick.
