“My Hands” – Fairfax, VA, a cappella ending.

So, what exactly is this thing we call Music…this unseen energy, this enigmatic force that can entertain, energize, soothe, heal and even awaken the soul?

Music is art– a performing art, a fine art and an auditory art.

Music is one of our most experienced disciplines of art. Music plays a large part in making our lives infinitely rich.

Music is subjective, and means something different to every single person on earth.

Music stimulates different parts of our brains and can make us chortle in glee or inflame us to rebellion, with the potential to experience the total array of human emotions.

Music is part of our everyday lives. In lobbies, elevators, cars, restaurants, our homes, our workplaces, stores, sporting events, meetings, places of worship, websites and the list goes on and on, we have music. Music is fundamental to the overall message where ever we hear it—music underscores and brings home the emotion of the moment.

Music is broken down into elements. Wait, this isn’t boring, really it isn’t – it is the combination of these elements that makes David’s sound his SOUND. There is pitch–which manages melody and harmony, rhythm with its sibling concepts of tempo, meter, and articulation, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. (I never realized before the complexity of what goes into music.)

Timbre (and David’s is unique) to highlight, is the quality of the tone or the color of the music. It is the resonance by which the ear recognizes and identifies a sound. Timbre is how we identify the source of a note, the singer, when it is at the same pitch and loudness. (Smoky, husky, velvety, wailing tenor – what are other adjectives you’ve heard?)

The timbre of a sound, in scientific lingo, depends on its wave form. The timbre of a singing voice is modified by constricting or opening various parts of the vocal tract, such as the lips, tongue, vocal chords, or throat. This makes each singing voice unique. (hmmm…ever wonder about the impact of that paralyzed vocal chord?)

Performance is the physical expression of music. A musical work will be performed once its structure and instrumentation are pleasing to it’s author. As it gets performed, however, it can be altered and totally transform the musical experience.

A performance can either be rehearsed or improvised. Improvisation is a musical idea created without contemplation, while rehearsal is dynamic repetition of the work until it has obtained a state of routine consistency. Some musicians will improvise a well-rehearsed song on the fly there by creating an unparalleled performance. (Live David concerts are the best–full of improvisations!)

And, so, let’s take these two concepts above and apply them to what our senses absorb when actively listening and/or observing David Archuleta’s music:

Timbre

The timbre of David’s voice is unique. The sound waves his voice creates periodically is best described as Power Music. Power Music is a term that refers to music that stands apart, evokes a significant experience, that transforms, that humanizes, that enables us to feel more alive.

When David sings, his voice resonates or “speaks” to us with its unique tonal sound or color, and harmoniously relates to our own personal frequencies (what we hear) attuned to that unique timbre. In effect, he is “singing our song” or “striking the right chord” when we hear him sing.

There have been whole songs that David has sung that are Power Music. One song that was Power Music from start to last for me was the AI performance of “Love Me Tender.”

There are always pieces and parts of each performance of David’s freshman album songs and live performances that contain the Power Music element.

Performance

David’s performance skills are evolving right before our eyes. It is a unique privilege to see this part of his musical artistry unfold and grow. Through his vocal performance he interprets each song a little differently, and improvises with what appears to be minimal effort.

However, he makes this appear effortless because he is able to master the music by repeated rehearsal and total focus on relentless execution in addition to his prodigious musical talent. His current feelings and mood, his now–if you will–as he is gestalt, are also translated into his music adding a distinctively unique dimension to each performance creating moments in the song of Power Music.

Adding the physical moves, the improvisation of melody, harmonies and textures, and, the ever evolving command of the stage, his art is constantly renewed and refreshed, creating deeper meanings with each performance.

See the Power of Performance in “Zero Gravity” at Fairfax, VA:

Final Thoughts ~

We are just beginning to comprehend the artistry, the gift of the music of David Archuleta. And, we are just beginning to grasp the dedication, commitment, risk taking and long hours of work a musical artist of David’s caliber puts in to create the qualities of song and performance that is Power Music.

David’s music does resonate deeply with some already. He has had multiple full performances that are Power Music, from the first note to the last. As he develops his music, his own lyrics and use of the supporting instruments to his voice, he pierces the layers of the human experience with every song, deep into the human soul as no singer has done in the past.

What is your Power Music?

I recently saw for the fourth or fifth time the movie Contact based on Carl Sagan’s 1985 novel of the same name. I remember reading the book when it came out, as astronomy and the mysteries of the universe have been a lifelong interest of mine.

For those not familiar, Carl Sagan was an American astronomer, astrophysicist and author who passed away in 1996. He was a Pulitzer Prize winner and author of many bestsellers, including Cosmos, which became the bestselling science book ever published in English. The accompanying Emmy and Peabody award-winning PBS television series has been seen by a billion people in sixty countries. His ability to capture the imagination of billions and to explain difficult concepts in understandable terms was and continues to be a magnificent achievement.

So, I was watching Contact and it was near the end that I was jolted into one of those super aware moments .… you know the kind where time stands still and your senses are on high alert, where you say “A-Ha” because you have just had a blinding flash of clarity. What jolted me was the point in the movie when an explanation of an experience that had no concrete evidence that it occurred was made by the protagonist, Eleanor (Ellie) Arroway. She says at a Congressional hearing:

I was given something wonderful, something that changed me forever. A vision of the universe that tells us undeniably…how rare and precious we are. A vision that tells us we belong to something that is greater than ourselves, that we are not, that none of us are alone.

I had an experience. I can’t prove it. I can’t even explain it. But everything I know as a human being, that I am, tells me that it was real.

I wish I could share that. I wish that everyone, if even for one moment, could feel that awe…and hope. That continues to be my wish.

Rascal wrote last year at notingDavid that Mr. David Archuleta’s artistry opens a “portal” to the universe. His post rang true, but I just had difficulty getting my mind completely around its meaning. Now, yes, the A-Ha has happened. For in Contact, Ellie’s explanation of her non-empirical experience fleshes out metaphorically in a relatively few sentences, what I have experienced on this David fan journey. (So, too Happy’s exquisite description of her experience at TriBeCa’s PC Richard and Sons Theater last week gives tremendous insight.)

And, as Ellie leaves the Congressional hearing she sees supporters with handmade signs. Signs that say: “Open Our Minds, Open Our Universe.” A-Ha…Open Our Minds, Open Our Universe—simple truth.

So, too, when I listen to the pure and beautiful voice of David Archuleta. David the-master-artist. That voice brimming with the subtleties of what it is to be alive. That voice that catapults one instantaneously to plumb the depths of so many emotions, so many vistas and landscapes that one didn’t expect to experience in a song. That voice that relentlessly draws one’s aesthetic sensibilities to the sublime.

I experience something that I can’t prove empirically, that I struggle to explain.

Happy wrote in a recent comment that artists give and the art appreciator takes. So, I take, I take. I take away an awe, a heightened awareness of connection and of the joy of the human experience and of the universe, of being a part of something rare and precious. I think that is what Rascal meant about being a “portal” to the universe, at least for me.

And to meet each of you in that universe that we cannot prove empirically, that universe of connection, is an unexpected joy. The conduit is, of course, the music and the voice of David Archuleta.

P.S. – Visit www.carlsagan.com. It is mind expanding. One sentence there above all others caught my attention:

Most of all, we hope to touch you with the soaring spiritual high that comes from grasping science’s central revelation – our oneness with the cosmos.

The first time one truly “gets” a David Archuleta performance, there is an immediate recognition of original, authentic artistry from the raw to the refined, and, the in between– the developing elements–of a rare talent. Recognition of the potential of such a talent — the yet to be finished canvas of a new artist–also gifts one with a crystal clear glimpse, in their mind’s eye, into the future.

This is a most powerful moment. It seizes and holds one in rapt attention as they are able to visualize with perfect clarity those raw elements and rare talent, in its final rendition.

We certainly do not experience that many moments of blinding clarity and certainty of the future in this information-overload, infinite-options, all-too-human life of ours. Those that “get” David’s artistry are, in general, perplexed as to why everyone cannot see what is as obvious as the sun, mountains, wind, stars, and seas. That David Archuleta is the voice of a generation.

And our reasons for admiring and supporting him as an artist continue to be varied and multi-layered.

First and foremost, David’s artistry is not only brilliant but also a work in progress. We are privileged to experience his developing artistic journey from its early days. Our time spent delving into David’s work is painted with a fresh and ever increasing level of awareness of the joy of music, expanding our minds and emotions to new vistas. For some, he also represents a catalyst that has recalibrated their outlook on life, inspiring personal transformation–a champion of how to be true to one’s self, make things happen, deal with adversity, and move forward in life with confidence.

Malaysia

David journeyed through AI as one of the youngest contestants to make it to the final, who wanted to simply sing, and had the vocal skills and musical potential the likes of which we, collectively, had not encountered. Comparisons were made with the greats in the music industry, from Frank Sinatra to Elvis to Michael Jackson, among others. On AI he was painted as the “ballad boy.” David, himself, appears to be experimenting with the music genre(s) on which he wishes to hang his artistic destiny.

Yes, quite amazingly, his artistic canvas is being painted right before our very eyes as we support, watch, listen, and enjoy his evolving body of work.

On his first virtually sold out U.S. solo tour, David in 32 days turned the stage into his playground. His Asia promotional tour was highlighted by screaming fans meeting him in the wee hours of the morning at the airport, packed to the rafters’ venues, a performance of Don’t Let Go that was powerful and passionate, in-depth media interviews, and warmth and appreciation by the fans for not only David’s artistry but also as an individual.

UK

The purposeful and intense UK tour was where we heard descriptions of a magical voice, of gutted & gobsmacked fans, and of audiences singing in force to Angels.

And, now the Philippines–the news, videos, pictures are pouring in, and updates are literally moment to moment from the fans.

Yes, we have seen radiant colors infused into his singing and performing resulting in the addition of bold and defining brush strokes to his artistic canvas.

… the bold, bright or soft, delicate pigments and innovative, authentic brush strokes of his song…

…the striking tints and sweeps and swirls of his performances where art and magic are pleated with vulnerability and strength…

…the radiant hues and whirls and twirls of his ever evolving melodic choices…

…that have and will continue to add the gorgeous colors and textures of art, the deeper dimensions of living, and the celebration of the human experience to our own life’s unfinished canvas.

A Glasgow Fan:

Mr. Kizzi and I met this young lady (around 16,) her dad and her brother outside of David’s hotel, The City Inn, where we were waiting for a taxi after the concert. Until then, we didn’t know it was David’s hotel.

They didn’t have tickets to the concert but she met David at the hotel near the Scottish Exhibition Center venue that afternoon and she had a picture taken with him. She showed us this picture that she had developed that day.

David’s Grandfather?

A group of girls, 14-18 years old, with such a beautiful Scottish brogue, came up to Mr. Kizzi after David’s set in Glasgow. They asked him where he is from; he said Florida. Then they asked if he was David’s grandfather. He said no. He said no three times. They didn’t hear him because they didn’t listen to anything he said after he said he lived in Florida.

They told Mr. Kizzi they watched David’s American Idol performances on YouTube and knew his grandparents lived in Florida. They were so excited as they were on their way to the outside door to back stage to get an autograph from David. They told Mr. Kizzi that David was amazing and that he (Mr. K) must be so proud of his grandson. By this time Mr. Kizzi was resigned to the fact that they had decided he WAS David’s grandfather and denial was futile; so he said, “Any grandfather would be proud to have David as a grandson.”

Wearing David’s Tee:

Mr. K bought us David tees when we got to the Glasgow venue and he put on his tee right away. The tee is black with David’s picture on the front and a list of the U.K. tour stops on the back (even the canceled ones.) So, McFly fans begin to stop us and discuss David with us before and after the show. Glasgow natives are some of the friendliest people I have ever met.

One group of girls (ages 14-18) stop us and launch into how much they love Crush, how they saw his AI performances on YouTube, and on how hot David is. They can’t wait until his CD is released next week so they can buy it.

The ushers were so friendly. They noted the T-shirt and asked us where we came from and was it just to hear David. We say proudly us we came just to hear David open for McFly. They tell us about who they are, their families (Scots are proud of their ancestry) and where they live. One usher invited us to have dinner with their family — we couldn’t though because of our tour. Another usher knew we weren’t sitting together and, after seating us, found me and said she had tickets for two seats together.

After David’s set we were in the Lounge area talking and the announcer overhead was saying McFly would be on in five minutes. We stood up to return to our seats and four astonishingly beautiful 16-20 year old girls approach us (Mr. K. hasn’t’ yet recovered from how gorgeous these girls are) and asked us if we were David fans. We said yes. They began to show us the items they got David to sign at the backstage door, and told us how sweet he was, how great his music was and how much they loved him.

I had three groups of girls and friends who obviously came together sitting around me.

The ones to my right, older teens, knew the words to Touch My Hand. They cheered and applauded and stood and waved throughout David’s set. They told me at intermission that they knew David from YouTube and American Idol.

The ones to my left were also older teens and were quiet at the start of David’s set, didn’t know anything about David and by the time he was singing his final song, Crush, were standing and cheering as exuberantly as the girls on my right. At intermission I spoke briefly to them and they said they were definitely buying his CD.

In front to my left were a group of girls in their early teens who were applauding, cheering, shrieking and dancing throughout all six songs

And, amazingly, as fans we have so much more to anticipate, to enjoy, as David grows as an artist and becomes known around the world. His artistry has universal appeal across cultures. We are experiencing something extremely rare…to see David’s artistic journey unfold around our planet, experience each step of growth as a fan, feel the joy and celebrate one of the unanticipated splendors of this shared human existence, the music and artistry of David Archuleta.

The Edinburgh Corn Exchange was rustic and agricultural. It was originally a building where farmers and merchants traded cereal grains. Such trade was common in towns and cities of Great Britain until the late 19th century. As trade became centralized in the 20th century many such buildings began to be used for other purposes such as meetings, banquets, and concerts.

We arrived by train at the Slateford stop on the Scots Rail line between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverly stations. It was a two-minute walk to the venue and people were streaming in by foot from five different directions.

In line waiting to pick up our tickets, we talked to people around us. Most didn’t know who David was. One girl said she learned a little about David, that he was on AI, after she found out he was opening for McFly. Some concert goers had been waiting in line at the venue since 7:00 a.m. that day. The venue was standing-room only. We were moshed with mostly 15-20-year-old women, a sprinkling of males (probably 1:10 ratio male to female) and a few concert goers over 30.

Next to me were three girls (15-20 age range) who came together, who cheered at every song, who jumped enthusiastically to Zero Gravity and who sang Crush. During My Hands, the audience was clapping overhead and cheering unreservedly at David’s a cappella vocals. Some of his best a cappella work.

After the show, I asked the girls next to me how they knew Crush. They said from YouTube surfing and they loved his Crush video. I asked them if they had seen the ALTNOY video and they said yes, it was “brilliant.”

Also, I saw McFly fans that were, obviously, waiting through David’s set for McFly. Several groups of girls near us who came together, at first were talking a little to each other but eventually became engaged in listening and watching David through Touch My Hand. By My Hands, they were clapping overhead and cheering. Zero Gravity had them jumping up and down and cheering even louder.

Of interest, next to us was a couple in their late 20s. The guy was behind the girl with his arms around her waist and his head above her head and he occasionally rested his cheek against her temple. They were obviously “in love” and their affection was quite lovely. I glanced occasionally at them. During Touch My Hand, they seemed more engrossed with each other. As David’s songs progressed, their eyes were on the stage and they swayed with his arms around her in rhythm to the music. By Zero Gravity, they were bopping up and down with the laddie’s hands on the lassie’s waist. At the end, they had separated and were applauding.

David’s reception at Edinburgh exceeded our wildest wishes. As always, it is difficult to visualize David’s final show in the U.K. He builds energy and ups his performance at every venue. And, the best is yet to come.

All learning experiences have two phases: taking in and taking hold. The easy part is to absorb and assimilate information; the tricky part, the dividing line between those who observe and those who do, is taking hold of all that has been learned and creating maximum results.

David has now entered the second phase of his learning journey; he is taking hold of his destiny made evident by his performances the past two days in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland.

He has wrapped his arms around the opportunities of his journey and he is making his first solo flights. Oh, yes, he still has his ground crew and he will vacillate somewhat during these early days of taking hold. For learning is about moving forward, backing up, regrouping and moving ahead with greater speed and confidence. Make no mistake, however, he is now emerging as an artist who knows what he is about.

Where the Salt Lake City concert last month conveyed power and joy, Edinburgh and Glasgow transmitted power, purpose and intensity.

In these first U.K. shows, David stepped up his game yet again and he radiated a high level of energy that emanated from him with every note, every move.

At both venues there were a few pockets of fans chanting “David! David! David!” before the shows began. And at both shows, the fans knew Crush, ALTNOY and surprisingly (at least to me) Touch My Hand and Zero Gravity.

The audience was vocal, receptive and highly appreciative of David’s set. There were the applauding, screaming, waving, on-their-feet segment and also the quieter, but no less attentive, attendees. Although the fans, obviously, were not there for David, his reception was outstanding and they cheered for his glory notes, his dancing, his energy — literally, they cheered for all the high points of his songs and performances as did the Stateside concertgoers.

At both shows, the audience was mostly under 20 (approximately 75%). Around 10% of the concertgoers were male. Not many were over 30. In Glasgow, where seats were available, there were probably 250 young girls and boys under 12. The young boys had McFly tees and other paraphernalia and their excitement was palpable and a joy to see.

David displayed a new sense of purpose and every ounce of song and performance at both shows was dedicated to that purpose. Power and purpose stood arm and arm with David.

Coincidentally, Scotland is a place known, historically, for its warriors and, for the past two evenings, David was a true warrior of song — his performances were fierce.

David is ready. He knows it. The journey continues. And, quite incredibly for us, his fans, the best is yet to come! How’d we get to be so lucky?!!!

On April 21st, 2009, David will open for the McFly band as their “Special Guest” in the “Up Close…And This Time It’s Personal Tour” at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England, kicking off a 20-day tour at 14 venues in England and Scotland. Well accustomed to huge audiences in arenas around the world, McFly is touring this time in smaller venues to thank the band’s most loyal fans. Ticket price is about US$33.

They describe who they are and a little about their pop-rock, pop-punk band (named after Marty McFly from the Back to the Future movie trilogy in the 1980s) on their MySpace page:

Hi and welcome to our MySpace. For all you newcomers, we are Danny, Dougie, Tom & Harry and together we are the band MCFLY.

We’re from the U.K. and have been together for over five years, released three studio albums on Universal Records and are about to release our fourth and best album, Radio:ACTIVE. So far we’ve had seven number ones, broke a few records, attempted to act and had some pretty awesome experiences, but now are the most excited we have ever been as we enter the next chapter in our career.

At the start of 2008 we set up our own record label called Super Records, giving ourselves complete creative control over our band. So from now on, everything you see and hear comes straight from our brains to yours.

Anyways, thanks for checking us out. Please feel free to message us and post comments. We run this ourselves and we’ll try to respond to as many messages as we can.

Cheers, MCFLY

As of December 2008, McFly has had 16 consecutive top-20 singles, seven of which reached #1 on the U.K. Singles Chart and 15 of which were consecutive top-10 singles.

McFly’s debut album, Room on the 3rd Floor, debuted at #1 on the U.K. album chart and is certified as double platinum. With this auspicious debut, McFly supplanted The Beatles as the youngest band ever to have an album debut at #1.

This is a great pairing for David. McFly has awards, credibility and a broad reaching fan base. David’s music is sweeter pop, albeit more R&B and youthful. His vocal prowess will shine through at every venue.

What a fabulous adventure for David at this point in his budding career. As he is developing his stage performance skills, and since he appears to be a sponge when around other creative performing artists, it will be interesting to see what he absorbs from this 20-day tour and reinterprets for future tours.

And, it will also be fascinating to see how the U.K. crowds respond to David’s music, the international media reviews, and the overall impact David will have on those around him.

The world is becoming his playground! Rock on David….

….where do we go from here, which is the way that’s clear…

Rock On,

Hey, hey,

Rock and roll,

Rock On………..

(lyrics from “Rock On” by David Essex 1973 – a stroll down memory lane from my college days)

Tonight was exquisite after a year of listening and heart and soul and highs and lows with David. Tonight was zero gravity.

Nothing held David down or back. He threw everything he was into every song. I cannot imagine what the last concert of this tour will be like. David is a perpetual motion machine when on stage and energy emanates from him whether he is Archustomping or perfectly still on his stool, and, it is just you and The Voice…and that momentum will grow with every concert. I sat and thought, now I know why I am on this journey…for this…for this…for the magic and music and art of David as it evolves… to live, if just for a moment, in zero gravity.

He took several pictures of the audience at the start; he said, with a grin, we were his “first.” Our stomachs plummeted in a free fall. He started us clapping; he worked the stage; he pumped his fist; he moved unreservedly punctuating his songs with spontaneous gestures. He owned us!

He sang “Somebody Out There” and it was the most delicate, poignant performance. We soared, and then floated, zero gravity.

“To Be With You.” David played keyboard and Kendra violin; her vocals were soft and complemented David perfectly, not overpowering. This piece will be played at weddings, will be a movie soundtrack. I have chills running up and down my legs and spine and to the top of my head as I recall this performance.

He loves to sing “Don’t Let Go,” he says he can really get in the song; and, when he got into that song, zero gravity.

The medley was unexpected and “I’m Yours” live, was joy, bliss, pure, lighthearted.

The band was young and a great match for David…he no longer seems so young…the drummer, Eli, has an aura that is hip, cool, Mike is in charge and fun, Alex was rawkin’ on the stage, and Kendra played flawlessly.

The set included flashing lights (changing colors) on platforms beneath the drummer and the speakers. Colors also changed behind them on a blank screen. The band’s intro to songs was fresh, fun, and unique—you can tell they have played around with the songs and changed things up.

The canned music played just before David came on stage (and before certain songs) was…someone will have the right name but I’ll describe it…new age in some ways, fertile, creative, mind expanding, relaxing yet energizing, it made you curious and excited yet calm and built to a crescendo and, then, David enters….that is the way David should be introduced—and I am in zero gravity.

And then, he sings a song that he and Mike wrote, that he has never performed or released anywhere….we are his first he says…there was total silence…the music, The Voice, the young, hip vibe, the connection, everyone in the audience knew something unique, special was happening….everyone was in “Zero Gravity.”

Since no one really knows what David’s future looks like, and yet we all are so highly invested, it is important to understand the reason behind individual responses to “WHAT-IF?”

At the heart of this is a shared commonality — we, every one of us, are deeply invested in David’s success. We love him.

At the same time, we see the path to David’s success and the milestones to indicate progress through the varying lenses of personal perspective. Thus, we have diverging opinions when faced with uncertainty about the direction of David’s career.

We also have varying emotional responses to the uncertainty. This is particularly disconcerting when we perceive that an event is potentially career ending. We want to help, we need to fix it!

Some of us have reacted to emerging events by worrying and wringing our hands over every “what-if.”

Some feel the overwhelming need to jump into the fray of widely diverse commentary and defend or attack.

Others go into hibernation, staying away from the moment-to-moment commentary waiting for solid evidence to surface or we decide to completely insulate ourselves from the wonder world of a David fan.

In the middle, some have vacillated between hope and despair and all points in between.

“What-ifs” can be fear-inducing or not depending on our viewpoint. “What if” this means something really bad for David? … really good for David?

When we read others’ opinions, they are just that, opinions. Opinions are not truth, opinions are not facts. Opinions laced with strong emotion are powerful and persuasive. Fear is a powerful inducement to believe that an opinion is a fact.

Optimistic, gentle, and watchful waiting opinions are softer strategies in a debate and often get overlooked in an emotionally charged discussion.

Of comfort, facts are results. Truth will always be revealed over time. Results tell it all. Results take time. David will give us the results.

David’s future will unfold as David directs it. David, even in his young years, is a very balanced and potent human being … thus the magnetism of his artistry … thus, why we are here! It is, after all … just David!
