According to InterAksyon:

American Idol star David Archuleta is scheduled to arrive in Manila on January 13 to do a primetime series for TV5.

In an official announcement posted on its website, the broadcasting network said Archuleta will “do a primetime series with homegrown Kapatid stars Jasmin Curtis Smith and Eula Caballero.”

Archuleta, who turned 21 just last December 28, has been one of the most exciting young singer-songwriters in America since placing second in the 2008 running of ‘American Idol’, the hugely popular singing competition in the United States.

The signing of Archuleta is seen to further boost the attempts of TV5, currently the third biggest broadcasting network in the Philippines, to climb up the rankings. (InterAksyon.com is the online news portal of TV5.)

The network has aggressively been signing Philippine superstars over the past two years, in 2011 drawing up contracts for the legendary Nora Aunor and “Megastar” Sharon Cuneta. TV5 also earlier signed deals with, among others, actresses Ruffa Gutierrez, Maricel Soriano, Lorna Tolentino, and Alice Dixon, and actors Aga Muhlach, Edu Manzano, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and legendary actor-comedian Dolphy for a variety of entertainment programs.

Archuleta’s joining TV5 comes from left field, however. The signing of an international star of Archuleta’s youth and talent, arguably in his prime, is bound to shake up the Philippine entertainment industry

A DAY FOR MAKING A D-IFFERENCE

I would like to share what we did here in Manila to celebrate David Archuleta’s birthday. Originally, the plan was to have the annual Christmas cum Archie birthday celebration. But recent events compelled us to re-channel our energies and make it a more productive day, inspired by our artist of choice.

Archuleta Philippines together with ARCH (Angels Reaching out with Caring Hearts) embarked on a ecological and compassionate-driven project for this day.

ECO TRAIL HIKING
This was a surprise! We didn’t realize that there will be hiking involved. But a good sweat is always good. Yes David, 21 archies walked 1.2km through a Guided Walking Tour that lasted about 30-45 mins and which involved an EcoPark Overview, History and Orientation PLUS Plant/Trees Identification.

Taking a page from the 7 Habits of Successful People, where it said “Begin with the end in mind”, we looked at COS where David concluded “Remember, even if you can’t sing you can always plant a tree”. so that’s exactly what we did!

A very informative Eco Awareness Lecture, then we were off to planting David trees!

21 trees in honor of David’s birthday, which will actually be named after him thru ARCH (Angels Reaching out w/ Caring Hearts)! Neat eh? I’ll be getting the Tree Adoption Certificates w/ the naming rights 1st week of 2012

LUNCH WITH MORE ARCHIES
We met with more Archies during lunch who bought more donations and were prepared to roll up their sleeves to pack our donation boxes

We transferred to One Gateway Place, where a function room has been arranged by Lorma (a resident of the condo) for our re-packing of grocery items such as canned goods, biscuits, soaps, laundry detergents, old clothes, shoes, slippers, blankets, etc..

But we started the packing with a little dessert — the David cake!

With donations and gifts from generous Archies – local and international – we started raffling off Archie goodies to inspire the packing. Congrats to all the winners! (Hah! I won a standee, weeeee!)

A SUCCESSFUL DONATION DRIVE
More Archies joined us during the packing and at the end of the day, we raised PHP27,000 that were converted to relief goods: 20 5-gallon jugs of water, groceries, etc PLUS donations in kind from our fellow Filipino Archies [clothes, blankets, bags, shoes, etc]. In total, we sent 7 big boxes that can make a D-ifference for 50 families.

It was a whole day affair. Fantastic time sharing with generous and loving archies made possible by Archuleta Philippines and ARCH.

The news is bittersweet, but truly should not be surprising to any of us. Rumors have circulated for months – perhaps longer – that David was planning to go on a mission.Now we have that confirmation.

It is a hard pill to swallow for the many fans who have followed David since he first sang Heaven on American Idol. And yet, who can begrudge him what his heart tells him to do? There will be much weeping, and as I sit here writing this, the tears will not stop. But certainly it is a selfishness that brings these tears. I will miss him. As will all of his fans.

But we have grown to love him for the very qualities that send him away from us for two years – his open heart, his deep faith, his need to give, his awareness and caring for those less fortunate. What else can he do but heed the call that sings so true in his heart? For someone so young, he has a courage and maturity that surprises me so often.

TDC will be here for the duration, we will add to the archives, listen for even a snippet of news of how David is doing, and hope that two years from now we can publish a post that says, “David Archuleta on Tour” and see the young man we have all come to love so much return renewed in mind, body and spirit.

Bittersweet.

I can’t tell you how special it’s been being able to come back here and do this Christmas tour and sing these songs that just mean a lot to me and to have all of you here tonight with us.  There’s no place like home.  I always say that.  Looking back through these last few years and all the support we’ve had and all the amazing experiences we’ve had and I’ve had, I feel very blessed in my life.  While I’m home in front of you guys here tonight, I would like to make a special announcement that I’ve chosen to serve a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  It’s not because someone told me that I was supposed to do it, not because that I no longer want to do music anymore, but it’s because it’s the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life.  It’s just the same feeling that I’ve always followed, tried to follow, in my life.  It’s the feeling that’s allowed me to have the opportunities I’ve had, the challenges I’ve had to overcome, and the blessings, too.  I’ve learned to trust that feeling and I’ve learned that I need to answer when it calls.  That is the reason why I know that I need to do this in my life.  I just wanted to thank you guys.  I’ll be going the first half of next year.  I just wanted announce that while I was home here in front of you guys because you have done so much for me.  Thank you so much.

Top LDS Events of 2011

I arrived at Irving Plaza around 6:45 to find a couple of lines formed outside. Standing by myself I was tapped on the shoulder and was greeted by “refnaf” who kindly told me I was in the wrong line. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t recognize her – she looked younger than the last time I saw her (how does she do that?) And I met sweet Audrey, who I instantly connected with as we discovered the “indigo” connection (she knows what I mean).

I moved to the line I was supposed to be in and met Tofan, Kizzi and … I’m so bad with names. Later we were joined by SandyBeaches and SilverFox. I had a few moments of discomfort as there were some significant breaks in relationships in the past, but when it’s all about David, it doesn’t matter. We all were there to show our love and support for the talented young man who was our common denominator, regardless.

The venue was a bit of a pit – so reminiscent of the Clarence/Williamsville venue during David’s first solo tour. A wide open room with a balcony around three sides and a bar at the back, it was standing only. The crowd was interesting, though – many more groups of twenties and thirties, a lot more men than usual and not too many tweens.

While waiting for the show to start I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to a young couple from NYC. The man was originally from the Murray area, the woman was a second-generation Filipino with family in Manila. And they were as taken with David as the rest of us. Talking to them about David, how they came to watch him (yes, Idol), the man’s experience on a mission and their young family made the time go by so quickly.

Jeff LeBlanc was the opening act, and he was really quite good. I was not restlessly waiting for him to finish and his style was much like Benton Paul – a good fit as an opener for David.

Then…then…David came out on stage singing Sleigh Ride. The first notes of the song made my heart skitter and there he was, looking fine in his black pants, vest, and white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

Skip forward to Turning Stone – I’ll get back to the performance(s) soon, I promise.

I had plans to meet Hello Gorgeous and Freo for early dinner. Arriving about 3:30, I found HG with Burkey, Burkey’s daughter and LuvDJA. It was as though I had known HG all my life. She is warm and easy-going and the conversation all around the table was interesting and David-filled. Freo joined us and I can’t tell you how nice it was to finally meet her in person. We have worked together here on TDC, had late-night skype calls to discuss all manner of David topics and other topics as well and yet we had never met. I only wish we had had more time to sit and talk – too much going on, too many people for both of us to catch up with. Shout out to KT, Bluesky, Betsey and a host of names that we all would recognize. I missed seeing Angelica, somehow, but I’m determined to change that outcome during the next DA tour!

Fast forward to the VIP – I wasn’t afraid this time, I didn’t act like a deer in headlights, I actually had a short conversation with David about the tour and the two venues, Irving Plaza and Turning Stone. I thanked him for doing this tour and for the hard work of preparing for it. We hugged, that is all that I needed. Later, when the pictures were over they allowed us to ask questions. I asked, “David, what are your plans for next year, or what would you like to have happen?”

“I’m going to be doing some more writing and recording and I may have some travel coming up in January. Not sure yet, but I’m waiting to hear about that.”  I’m sure this is somewhat paraphrased, but it is the essence of what he said. Writing and recording are exactly what I wanted to hear.

The Turning Stone venue – that is the kind of place that David belongs. The tables and booths, the excellent acoustics, a stage large enough for David to jump around during Zero Gravity, and the sound and lighting to highlight the bright, the loud, the soft, the gentle, the amazing voice of David Archuleta.

The performances: David always gives more than 100%, but this concert series can only be described by the term, Vocal Perfection!

Not a note was missed, every high and low were full and rich and powerful. We often tease about David being an angel, but his voice was truly heavenly. When David sings, his voice fills the venue, fills your soul, and there is no way to describe it. He evokes a physical reaction in the audience when he sings – you can hear the audience gasp and sigh and try to suppress little screams of delight. He takes you places, and you have no choice but to go.

We have always delighted in David’s voice, but something was different about these performances, and it was David, himself. Fully at ease and in command of the stage, the band and the audience, David owned every minute of the concert. His banter was free and easy, his voice in prime shape, and when he moved to the music, he was loose-limbed and revealed those Latin-inspired foot movements. He’s coming into his own in so many ways. It felt like being a proud parent, watching the boy you’ve adored grow into a man. Watching his confidence grow and his mannerisms mature. Even the timbre of his voice has changed so that you hear it in the depth of the tones, the fullness of every note.

We, as fans of David James Archuleta, are one lucky lot. We have been blessed and privileged to see the emergence of his enormous potential from the audition performance of Heaven to the breathtaking performance of that song in Asia, from his shy ways on the first solo tour to his humorous and warm conversation with his audiences now. We have witnessed the early days and the emergence of a man who will one day become a performance legend. Of that I have no doubt.

Today we built a new TDC Archive feature. Given JR’s amazing work in keeping up with posting new pages for all of David’s events, and the long history this site has of collecting all things Archuleta, we thought it might be helpful to be able to look for articles in several ways. Constitution Fair Information

Fresh from his successful, epic tour of Asia, David Archuleta is doing a full concert in Arizona for his fans on the American Continent! This event is attended by tens of thousands each year as a celebration of the US Constitution. There will be awesome exhibits, lots to do and most importantly, there will be Daaavvviiiid!!! So much love was shown to him by fans in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Let’s show him he is just as welcome by fans in his own country. Come join us and Celebrate him home! As the above post from the Constitution Week site states, the show starts at 6pm, gates will not open until 5pm. David will be on at 8pm followed by even MORE fireworks!

There was a post by SweetonDA, who is from Arizona, that triggered an email from Sandybeaches (making a serious offer, she can share that part if she’d like) that put me in contact with Barbara Stowell, a most amazing woman from Constitution Week. This put things in motion that have brought an exciting opportunity for all of David’s fans. Many David fans have contacted her regarding the Constitution event, including me, so because of this she came up with a great idea for us fans; I can’t thank her enough and team David for giving us the greenlight!

A donation of $25 will guarantee you entrance to the event and a seat in an area set up for fans close to the stage!  She asked if I thought the fans would be interested I said yes and volunteered to distribute wristbands and collect the donations 

The event starts at 6:00pm and they will have a designated area to line up.  Remember that it will still be very warm so be prepared.

Let us know if you are going, what your plans are, or any ideas you may have to give David a great welcome.  Seriously, let’s make it happen! Roses to stomp, balloons, posters, or whatever we can come up with.  Seeing a lot of folks wearing wristbands would be awesome as he would know they were fans.
