The rumors started late last year. Then sometime in December, David himself started mentioning about returning to Manila very soon. But who knew it would be this soon, for real, and for this extended period? After all, he was here for his 1st solo Manila concert at SMART Araneta just a little over five months ago. I mean, could we in Manila be THAT lucky? And on the cusp of his impending 2-year sabbatical for his mission? Factoring all of these into consideration, this return trip has become more significant. Uber valuable.

An artist of worth

Value is undeniably something that David consistently brings to the table. Whether it be a performance, a charity event, an interview, a basketball game or a simple session with fans, David brings some “thing” to his engagement that makes it magical, unforgettable – a heightened experience. That there is something intangibly special around David is an observation commonly shared by those who spend time with him.

The only explanation I could think of is because not only is he an artist of worth, he is a person of substance. And he brings all that into a committed point in time. End result: you feel you got more than you expect or at times, more than you deserve.

You can see it in the way he treats others. In the way he regards an experience. In the manner he marks his moments. In the care when he chooses his songs. He does not just mouth lyrics to get a hit or to sound hip. He makes sure that the message of the song is at par with his artistic and ethical standards.

For when he is engaged, you sense that he is in it, full time (of course, except when there is a squirrel or chicken running around him, LOL) . That’s why you can also feel that he does not dismiss any encounter. To paraphrase what he once said, whether good or bad, every thing can be an opportunity to learn. So possibly the most random star in the planet is also the most deliberate in his choices. Such an enigma.

His most recent two decisions – (1) to go on a mission full time and (2) accept the TV5 offer – are perfect examples of choices sitting at the opposite ends of a pendulum. And that description covers the reactions of fans worldwide, as you can imagine LOL.

The depth of the word “Kapatid”

“Kapatid” is Tagalog for brother or sister or sibling. It is also used in church circles for a localized concept of church family life. It’s even used to send out messages of political unity.

Why the term “kapatid”? It is actually composed of two words–“ka” and “patid.”

“Patid” refers to the umbilical cord that needs to be cut during birth. “Patid” means cut from. When another person used or uses that same umbilical cord as we did in birth, he or she has got to be your brother or sister. When you share the same cord and were severed from the same, that makes you “ka-patid.” It means you shared the same womb. It means you shared the same life and same sustenance.

According to Wikipedia, “TV5 is a major commercial television network in the Philippines solely owned by MediaQuest Holdings, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company headed by business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP). Its parent company, the Associated Broadcasting Company, also owns and operates other media properties, including the news channel AksyonTV, and news radio station DWFM in Quezon City.”

The surprise acquisition of David into TV5′s stable of talents is part of the network’s aggressive campaign to further boost its steady growth since MVP came on board in 2010. This was also the time TV5 adopted its new campaign, branding itself as the “Kapatid” (“sibling”) network.

David met with some of TV5’s top honchos in a contract signing held at EDSA Shangri-la to formalize his upcoming project with TV5. Present in the signing were TV5 President and CEO lawyer Ray C. Espinosa and Executive Vice President and COO Roberto V. Barreiro.

But as pointed out by Nestor Torre in his January 24 article in Inquirer, “Archuleta is only the latest in a long line of foreigners who have starred in local TV-film productions. Back in the ’50s, American Joan Page appeared in some local movies, as did Russian Nikki Ross … Beauty titlists from other countries who’ve top-billed Filipino productions include Johanna Raunio (who costarred with Chiquito in a mermaid movie), Amparo Muñoz, and most successfully, Dayanara Torres (once married to Marc Anthony), who not only acted with Aga Muhlach but also fell in love with him, and had her own local TV dance show, to boot.

So how will TV5 differentiate this project from previous foreign acts? Better yet, how will TV5 parlay the Archuleta brand to engage fans and spectators, thereby creating more value for its target audience and for its organization?

TV5 gets it

Since this is David’s 4th time to visit Manila, fans have extensive experience when it comes to dealing with the organizers that bring him in. And let me tell you, this has been the most welcoming, respectful and affirmative experience I have ever had with a David organizer. Sony Philippines, Ivory, Astroplus and Odyssey are of course notable for their inclusive approach when it comes to fans. Like them, TV5 simply gets it! Given our previous DALIM experiences, this is really a welcome change.

I am quite certain though that TV5′s treatment and reception of the fans’ involvement is in no small measure a direct reflection of Mr. Archuleta’s desires and wishes. And as such, the experience becomes uplifting and more meaningful. The Archuletor has spoken and TV5 is listening. Muchos gracias!

By their respectful and welcoming attitude towards fans, TV5 recognizes that Archie fans and spectators are a crucial support in producing their desired results. We play a meaningful role in value creation since fans are the “demand” and are able to drag or influence friends, colleagues, family, etc. to “Nandito Ako” events.

But not only are we the “demand”, Archie fans are the real activators of the potential demand of this project. We are the direct consumers of this type of service offered by TV5 and we assume an important economic value in achieving this project’s success.

This in part was one of the highlights of my talk with Sir Perci while at the airport waiting for David to arrive: why the TV5 organization, by word and deed, astutely puts a premium on fan involvement. A concert is a once-off event. You buy a ticket, attend the show and whether you are satisfied or not, you have contributed already in realizing the targets of the organizer.

That is not the case with “Nandito Ako”. As it is a tele-series, its triumph depends on a much broader and extended set of variables. Unlike a once-off concert, a tele-series requires a more enduring patronage for it to be considered a success.

Let’s face it, “Nandito Ako” is already a sensation as it is. No surprise in that. Fans here and abroad have consumed every morsel of news and rumors we can get our hands on. It has been covered by local and international media. #FollowArchuleta, #NanditoAko have trended worldwide.

The Archie fan community do not only support David by following his song releases or concerts. The support is well documented through the fan clubs and fan sites/blogs where we can speak our mind, our voices heard and contribute to promoting anything-David.

We interact with the the artist’s management or label and other stakeholders (publicists, official site representative, family members, coach, local distributors, DJs, site admins etc.), and somehow, we get involved indirectly in their strategic choices.

Hence, the fans play a leading role within the social network of an artist by helping to create value through commitment, collaboration and social participation. This makes us a key determinant for the value creation process within TV5′s and David’s social network.

I think TV5 sees this clearly. The challenge lies in sustaining these early wins.

#FollowArchuleta – not a sprint, it’s a marathon!

Which brings me to #FollowArchuleta. Huge kudos to TV5 for designing this campaign. It is informative. It is up-to-speed. It is quality news. It caters to the needs of media and other interested parties. It feeds the insatiable appetite of fans about anything David. Especially international fans who cannot participate in the local events. It is fast. It is furious. The updates at times leave me breathless like in a marathon #FollowArchuleta is of value.

Given that David Archuleta is an international star, there is high demand for the series’ DVD release, its subtitling or overseas showing. (Sir Perci and I also talked about this which I will discuss in the next thread.) A soap that has not even aired! If this is any indication that TV5 is on the right track in marketing this project, then its success looks extremely promising.

Hopefully, the excitement and goodwill generated by the current promotion will be sustained till the series’ conclusion. My fearless forecast of course is that the premiere will be a hit. Archie fan or not, people will be interested to see how David will come across in his biggest and highly unexpected career move.

The reluctant star, who once loath watching himself on-screen or even seeing his face on photos, plunges into his 1st ever dramatic acting project. And that’s after announcing his decision to go on a two-year full-time mission!

“Nandito Ako” – the glorious theme song

And there is the teleseries’ theme song! TV5 may be in for a loop when the “Nandito Ako” sound track is released. When David sings this live – and David should sing this live [ATTENTION TV5!!!] — it will be EPIC!.

The Kapatid network should leverage this competitive edge WHILE David is HERE in Manila. Aside from adding value to the project’s already impressive start, the live performance will deliver an emotional wallop that no promotional gimmick can ever match.

More importantly, it will be a big disservice to Archuleta himself if TV5 does not plan for him to perform “Nandito Ako” live before he goes back to the US. David is one of the few artists who actually sound a million times better live than a studio recording. And for him to sing this well-loved Tagalog song in the flesh, in front of Filipinos, is the best marketing tool for the teleseries.

Dear TV5, you have a goldmine that even non-Archies will be out to acquire. If there are any qualms about the song being downloaded if sung live prior to the official release in iTunes, you have another surprise coming re the Archie fan community. David is so much loved by his fans that a Gifting Program exists for fans who want a David song but cannot afford it or who are unable to purchase it from their own country. This is done to strike out illegal downloading that only reduces an artist’s potential earnings and ranking. And any self-respecting Archie or Arch Angel will not stand for that.

TV aficionados may regard this special project with David as another glimpse of greater things to come from TV5. It is not far-fetched to expect that in the grand scheme of things, TV5 is gunning for “Nandito Ako’s” inevitable success to translate to improved viewership and heavier patronage, not only for the tele-series but for other TV5 offerings.

If TV5 continues to apply the culture of “Kapatiran” and inclusiveness to their daily business dealings — other networks, be warned.

A side note: It had been discussed in these boards that something happens to David’s aura when he is in Manila. The light inside him seem to be magnified ten-fold whenever he is in the tropics. The guy literally sparkles!

According to InterAksyon:

American Idol star David Archuleta is scheduled to arrive in Manila on January 13 to do a primetime series for TV5.

In an official announcement posted on its website, the broadcasting network said Archuleta will “do a primetime series with homegrown Kapatid stars Jasmin Curtis Smith and Eula Caballero.”

Archuleta, who turned 21 just last December 28, has been one of the most exciting young singer-songwriters in America since placing second in the 2008 running of ‘American Idol’, the hugely popular singing competition in the United States.

The signing of Archuleta is seen to further boost the attempts of TV5, currently the third biggest broadcasting network in the Philippines, to climb up the rankings. (InterAksyon.com is the online news portal of TV5.)

The network has aggressively been signing Philippine superstars over the past two years, in 2011 drawing up contracts for the legendary Nora Aunor and “Megastar” Sharon Cuneta. TV5 also earlier signed deals with, among others, actresses Ruffa Gutierrez, Maricel Soriano, Lorna Tolentino, and Alice Dixon, and actors Aga Muhlach, Edu Manzano, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and legendary actor-comedian Dolphy for a variety of entertainment programs.

Archuleta’s joining TV5 comes from left field, however. The signing of an international star of Archuleta’s youth and talent, arguably in his prime, is bound to shake up the Philippine entertainment industry

It is interesting that the different definitions of “exponent” remind me of the things I find fascinating about David Archuleta — belief, truth, idea, power, representation, advocacy, raised symbol, standards, realization, abstraction…

And as he embarks on another media blitz to promote his Christmas tour, the GCT album & its PBS airings plus Wait’s music video, he literally multiplies himself and reaches out to his market on various media. As mentioned in a couple of threads ago, David will be onstage, on TV/cable, on the airwaves, on print, on billboards, posters, email blasts, online and on meet and greets.

Such multimedia blitzkrieg is shaping up to be a yearly tradition. No complaints from me I say: go forth and multiply the David brand! The world can sure use more joy, more sharing, more sense from a person with substance. The Season’s {multimedia} exponent, indeed.

You’ve seen the videos, watched the interviews or read the numerous articles. Once again, you witnessed Pinoy craziness over TheArchuletor. If anyone still doubts that this is Archuleta Country, better get your head examined and scoot to YT and fan sites to check-out the events as chronicled.

David’s 2nd visit in Manila was a whirlwind and exhausting adventure. He emerged from Immigration at way past 3pm, mobbed by media – not by fans, take note, as we promised NAIA Security and SonyMusicPhil that we will keep a respectful distance.

As you can see in the arrival video, we were barricaded by media so all along we thought David didn’t notice us or the banners. His Mabuhay vlog says otherwise.

If you are not an active member of Archuleta Philippines (AP) or any other fan site, you could have easily missed his arrival and be one of those who scrambled to get passes for his micro-mini concert. With a sudden red alert travel advisory raised (Goodness, last year it was NIHI!), Sony Music Philippines was constrained to promote the event merely 2 business days from David’s scheduled appearance.

That of course didn’t prevent Pinoy Archies from being prepared.

What I love most re DALIM 2.0 – The Arrival (Nov 16). Team NAIA. .. Team Pen… Team SkyDome… You’d think this was some military operation we were maneuvering, hehe! But that was exactly how we were organized and what I love most with DALIM 2.0.

Cos with very little time to prepare and plenty of unconfirmed info gathered, Pinoy Archies still clicked like clockwork. From the strategic gears (text/chat/promo brigades, welcoming squads, early-bird queuing, live streaming, media liaising) to the tactical tools (shuttle bus, shirts, banners, tags, leis, gifts, letters & baskets of mangoes), we aimed for David to feel the love from the time he stepped our shores.

The Archies’ presence – even before his mini-concert – was not lost on media and organizers. The evening news showed the fans in the airport with AP’s banners in full display

David’s Media Day (Nov 17 am/pm). For some members of the press, they shrugged off the craziness as standard fanaticism. But after they personally met our guy… well I think it is best to quote from the mouth of babes. Here are some choice entries from those who attended the presscon –

We see him as shy, easily embarrassed, even awkward sometimes, but when you meet him in person, you realize just how genuine this guy is. Cut from a very different cloth as most of the celebs we’ve met. There’s no disingenuous bone in his body. [Chico & DelMar of RX93.1]

E-v-e-r-y one who emerged from the Media Room had this “Archufied” smile – you know what I mean? A lot came off shaking their heads like in awe. Others couldn’t help themselves for a giggle or a small shriek to escape from their lips.

David’s Media Day started at 10:30am and wrapped up at around 4:00pm, just enough for him to freshen up and rush to his mini-concert at Sky Dome of SM North EDSA. For sure, on 17th Nov 2010, a good number of media people got that “What just happened?” experience.

The Micro-Mini Concert (Nov 17 eve). It was cra-zeh. His voice reverberated around the dome – full, clear & strong. He was in full command during Elevator, classic during Crush. He really gave his all during SBL that he was almost hoarse when he was saying “Mahal ko kayo (I love you all)” as he left he stage.

So where was I standing all this time? Right in front of the baby grand! Great view, right? Well, supposedly. Would you believe I wasn’t able to watch his performance? Yup, I got squashed in the mosh-like pit while supporting Naree who had to step-up in the railings to get pictures. When the crowd surged forward, I had to turn my head sideways, unable to watch his performance. I did see him though… through cameras of the other Archies around me.

Except for that ssmmaall mishap, the whole day was what dreams are made of. Consider these:

Due to high demand for passes, organizers decided to take out the chairs in the floor-seated area, initially intended for the 1st 400 fans who would buy TOSOD at the gate. This effectively brought up space accommodation up to 2,000 pax.

David’s departure (Nov 18 4am). Doc Naree and I rushed back to the hotel to drop off some more gifts & fan letters from the provinces that I got only that night. The letters were collected by Kricket, AP head – who was also unable to attend as she lives in Davao. By the time we left the hotel, it was almost time for David & company to leave for the airport.

A small group of fans waited overnight at the hotel hoping to bid him goodbye. Here is their account:

“When Melinda came down, they asked if they could have a pic with David. Melinda wasn’t sure because David had just woken up. David came down and talked to them for a bit, thanking them, etc. and then boarded the van. Fans were disappointed they didn’t ask him for a photo or even sign their COS copies. They didn’t want to be demanding. Van door closed, started moving, then stopped. Melinda and David were talking inside the bus. Then, David came out and asked the fans if they wanted a photo with them.”

Until the last moment, his heart went for those who matter.

When Prayers Get Answered
Part 2 to be continued…

The roller coaster ride that is TOSOD continues when you listen to the 7th cut of this album, “Parachutes & Airplanes”. I’d say it is well placed in the CD setlist, coming after “Falling Stars”.

Nicknamed “PANDA” by the arch angels, it is probably the 2nd track that the fan base is most familiar with (aside from the used-to-be-carrier single “Something ‘Bout Love”), given that David debuted this song during the BYU-ID Rexburg Concert sometime in June 2010 along with “If I Could Only Be” and “You’re Not a Very Good Liar”. PANDA received mixed reviews back then but it was my favourite among the three songs.

PANDA adheres to the feel-good theme of the album but veers away from the “soft-verse/full chorus” format found in most of the cuts in this album. The melody is bouncy from the get go and as the lyrics intimate, PANDA “never hits the ground”.

The lyrics are simple yet they are full of imagery. They reflect the always-curious David, not hesitant to ask whenever unsure.

Wise innocence shining through.

Interestingly, David seems to be taken with the idea of being in suspended animation. Just like in “Zero Gravity”, the sense of being high dominates PANDA.

And even if a parachute is a contraption that takes you down, it does so safely – no dropping like a hot potato for Mr. Archuleta, eh?

Meanwhile, PANDA shares a similar sentiment taken up by “Who I Am” — about the wish for a break, of getting away. Easy to imagine that the unexpected speed, at least to him, by which his career has taken leaves him with little room for a breather.

Melodically, PANDA is strong. The tune stays with you after the 1st listen. The light but brisk piano-vibe in the introduction is a nice contrast coming from “Falling Stars”. It however reminds me — and this may surprise you — of the introduction of The Who’s “Baba O-Riley”. Listen to this live performance years ago and tell me if it is just my imagination –

Of course, the tempo between the two songs is different but I think they share the same diatonic chords of D-A-G. Not 100% sure though if I got the chords down pat as I don’t have my guitar right now while writing this. I may have to get re-visit this some day

Then, the melody progresses into a robust chorus that is strikingly similar to “Come On Get Higher” chorus by Matt Nathanson, both in melodic and numerical progression. Check it out!

See what am referring to? That higher-note/lower note looping pattern in the two lines of the chorus. Is something wrong here? Certainly not.

A lot of songs share the same chord progression even if they don’t sound alike. Would it shock you to know that Green Day’s “Basketcase” bear the same progression of “Pachelbell’s Canon in D Major”? Or that there are about 36 popular songs with the same chords progression? This is just a small sampling of this occurrence.

So do not fret. This happens. We are not being hoodwinked. Songs may share the same progression but what would make each song stand out would be the lyrics, arrangement, styling and interpretation. The last two is where David shines the most. His musical styling is inimitable. His lyrical phrasing, impeccable.

This brings me to one of the most notable changes made on PANDA’s final arrangement. The album version carries a chorus that has been punctuated with strings similar to Beethoven’s Symphony Nr. 5 – have you noticed?

Now I have always regarded PANDA as the most fleshed out material, more radio-ready, among the three songs that David debuted three to four months prior to the album’s official release. But the addition of the string component to the album version was a very pleasant surprise. It upgraded PANDA’s production value, IMHO. At the very least, it made PANDA more appealing, more memorable to me.

And despite having a full-complement of instruments, PANDA doesn’t sound over produced. David’s voice is front and center. Here, David’s falsetto is rounded and full.

PANDA abounds with low registers that bring out the beautifully maturing voice of The Archuletor, the primary reason why we ain’t hitting ground.

Echoes of “Crush” introduce the song – those plaintive piano notes crescendoing into electric guitars and keyboard, with David’s soft Voice crooning, “I don’t know what I’m doing here/How I landed in this space/ But it’s a good place.”

Preach to the choir! Isn’t that every Arch Angel’s anthem? We don’t know how we made it to this journey on the Archubus, but it’s definitely a “good place.”

Thing is: there was a brief moment over the weekend, when I seriously wondered if we were still there, not always relying on the sweet spot that David’s Voice gives us.  No mention of his Other Side of Down album on his most recent vlog had some of us thinking (or over-thinking, as some accused us of doing) that he wasn’t in a “good place.”  So we congregated on Twitter on the eve of Halloween to reassure David that his and our journey was not complete, that we loved him and his album no matter what.  After all, it’s not how an album charts or sells that matters, it’s the sentiment and the production of seriously good music.

That, to me, is what places David and the rest of us in a “good place.”

The week that The Other Side of Down dropped, I ranked “Good Place” as the strongest track on the album, saying

From its “Crush”-like opening to its emo-tinged rock edge, replete with an intensified bridge (accompanied by military-style syncopated beats), we definitely get a glimpse of The Voice unleashed even as it is contained in the parameters of pop music.  It is by far the strongest track – vocally, lyrically, and production-wise.

It is such a mature sound coming from David, moving us from where we left “Crush” to explore existential longing and contentment.  It is vintage David, when you think about it, always appreciative that wherever he has landed – up or down – he’s where he is supposed to be.  At the same time, anxiety lurks just below the surface – “I don’t wanna waste another summer / I don’t wanna wait until I fall / I could be a memory tomorrow / I could be nothing at all” – and hammered home by that militaristic-drum-based rhythm.  The urgency is there, and the “good place” where David resides is as fleeting as our time on this Earth.

“These are words I wanna say / every hour of every day / These are words that say how good it feels to be here with you today / I hope it’s not too late / I hope it’s not too late”

A “Good Place” is but a glimpse of the depths that the vocal, musical, and lyrical artistry of David can reach.  In short, he can and will go deeper, but at this moment, at this time, he reminds us that we are where we need to be. How we move forward from here is anyone’s guess.

In the mean time, the Voice reproduces “echoes” in some charmingly and hauntingly vital ways – from the Crush-like motif to the repetitive “I hope it’s not too late” refrain – as if he needs to deliver an end-of-days message.  Can we hear it, and are we hearing it from a “good place”?

Keeping our eyes, ears, and hearts open, never losing sight of where we’re at. We’re here with David for the long haul!
