Going the Distance with David Archuleta

A friend shared these lines because of some personal situation he is in. Funny enough, it resonated with my current Archie life. Doesn’t the above quotation work both ways? For us fans, and for David as well? Six months into his self-chosen 2-year hiatus, the separation has exacted a “distance” on his Archies worldwide that may be both liberating and restraining. As we can imagine, David must also be going through the same thing. That is bold and fearless. Not physical space. A virtual chasm that undoubtedly we are willing to bridge, intent on going that distance. Because we know a good thing when we see one… even if – FOR […]

I Hear America Singing

I Hear America Singing I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear, Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong, The carpenter singing as he measures his plank or beam, The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work, The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,   The showmaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands, The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown, The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing, Each singing […]

Journaling

As I was reading David’s recent blog entry, I stopped in the middle and thought to myself, this is so amazing – I’m reading a letter from this preposterously talented, successful guy who’s out on tour traveling thousands of miles, working on two albums and spending time with his cousins, and he’s writing a letter to me. Okay, you might have gotten a copy of it too, but really, how many years has it been since I wrote a letter even half that long to a family member or even a friend, much less someone I don’t even know? I think I need more fingers and toes to calculate […]

I Hate You, David Archuleta

I hate you, David Archuleta, For this affliction you’ve given me. I’d rather have swine flu or salmonella Than suffer from this ODD. I used to have a life, you see, But when I saw you on TV Flirting with some melody, I knew that was the end of me. I had no choice—your lack of guile, Your soulful voice and gleaming smile Had me transfixed. Who is this kid? And that’s when ODD done me did. What started off mild, grew into obsession. Stayed up late for vote-dialing sessions, Screamed at my friends whose taste I questioned, And after you lost, sank into depression. And no, I’m not just being dramatic, I was an honest-to-goodness fanatic. And I shall prove this with a story Of ODD in all […]

The Woof of Now

Golden Retrievals…………….Mark Doty Fetch? Balls and sticks capture my attention seconds at a time. Catch? I don’t think so. Bunny, tumbling leaf, a squirrel who’s — oh joy — actually scared. Sniff the wind, then I’m off again: muck, pond, ditch, residue of any thrillingly dead thing. And you? Either you’re sunk in the past, half our walk, thinking of what you never can bring back, or else you’re off in some fog concerning — tomorrow, is that what you call it? My work: to unsnare time’s warp (and woof!), retrieving, my haze-headed friend, you. This shining bark, a Zen master’s bronzy gong, calls you here, entirely, now: bow-wow, bow-wow, bow-wow. There is a Buddhist idea of being in the now, of being present. […]

It’s an Inside Job

It’s a marvel the world keeps spinning Sometimes I wonder how The angels must be winning In spite of what we humans still allow. What passes for a good idea Just amazes me And how it’s wrapped and sold to us Is simply trickery. And along comes David, So beautiful to see Captivating audiences from sea to shining sea! But look into those eyes, my friend And look into them deep You’ll see that it’s an inside job And he intends to keep…. Our souls together, whole Wrapped up in a fleecy All snuggly in his heart Wherein we share his peace. Yup, it’s an inside job Within that outer beauty Laughing ‘cross the stage he goes Shaking his little booty! And you can laugh at me, you see It really doesn’t matter If I’m the […]
